Characters / CMC+ - Touhou Project

Go To

Due to Touhou Project having the most fighters of any one franchise in CMC+, a page specific to this franchise was made.

    open/close all folders
    In General
  • Badass Adorable: They're cute anime-styled girls of varying strengths and special powers.
  • Mana Meter: For about half of the roster of Touhou characters, they have their own hexagonal meter ripped from Hisoutensoku as part of some gimmick related to them. Sometimes its strictly for flight/hovering, other cases it's to fuel their special attacks, or possibly both. Aside from those that lack the meter completely, these characters are categorized as the following:
    • Flight: MC Marisa, Remilia, Flandre and Komachi.
    • Special attacks: Sakuya, Youmu, Parsee, Nue, Clownpiece and Akyuu.
    • Both of the above: Reimu, Cirno, Shinki and Mokou.
  • Video Game Flight: The ability of flight is Zig-Zagged across the cast: certain fighters either completely lack the ability of dedicated flight, while others have gimmicks/moves that allow for it.

Highly Responsive to Prayers

    Reimu Hakurei

Reimu Hakurei

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sato_reimu.png

Hakurei Shrine Maiden and the resolver of incidents in Gensokyo.

  • Barrier Warrior: Summons a temporary barrier with her side special, which damages foes and reflects projectiles (including her own, but they don't damage her).
  • Energy Ball: For the down special, Reimu casts an orb of magic that travels slow, but is dangerous to be hit by. The Final Smash is the same attack, but much more powerful and with a bigger hitbox than how it appears.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: She may be magically oriented when considering just her specials, but she doesn't skimp out on physical combat; fighting via various martial art moves.
  • Orbiting Particle Shield: For the down smash, Reimu conjures eight Yin-Yang orbs to completely encompass her.
  • Paper Talisman: Reimu casts several of her spells via her ofudas; using them to summon barriers for side special, orbs for down special, and a particularly powerful magic orb for her Final Smash.
  • Pinball Projectile: Her Neutral Special summons a yin-yang orb that can be launched around with attacks, with it bouncing around borders of the screen until it hits an opponent.
  • Weapon Twirling: A variant where she doesn't have to hold it to make the gohei spin, with Reimu doing so for her down tilt and up smash.

The Story of Eastern Wonderland

    Marisa Kirisame

Marisa Kirisame

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marisa_mash.png
Crusade Mod Character: MashMan

Self-proclaimed "Ordinary Magician" and kleptomaniac friend of Reimu.

  • Ass Kicks You: Propels herself rear first for the forward smash. Like how the attack works in its origin, it has the property of negating projectiles.
  • Attack Drone: Her Down Special summons a pair of orbs that orbit herself, which can be commanded to fire lasers forwards up to three times with additional use of Down Special.
  • Broomstick Quarterstaff: Weaponizes their broomstick to whack foes. Even the Flying Broomstick recovery moves are offensively orientated; either as a Dash Attack side special, or the equivalent of a Shoryuken up special.
  • Charged Attack: Neutral special, depending on how long the move is charged, has Marisa fire some magic spells of several stages:
  • Flying Broomstick: Naturally for a witch, Marisa flies via the classic associated trope. Though here, its limited in that aspect, her associated specials largely being offense oriented.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: Naturally for Marisa, her Final Smash is the Master Spark: a large, encompassing and powerful rainbow colored beam summoned from her mini-hakkeri.

Mystic Chain Marisa:

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marisa_7.png
  • Broomstick Quarterstaff: Moreso than her normal counterpart: Marisa jabs with the handle end of her broom like a staff, swings the bristle end for a variety of attacks, and spins the whole thing overhead for an aerial.
  • Flying Broomstick: Unlike her normal counterpart, Marisa flies/floats more freely on her broom, only limited by a meter.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: MC Marisa's alternate moveset is more than just different from normal Marisa, its also weird:
    • Her broom swing forward tilt strictly launches foes behind Marisa, making for an odd follow up tool.
    • Forward smash is a Meteor Move — Marisa slamming the broom forward to spike foes. This makes it the one forward smash unable to launch directly into the blastzone on the sides, with it having completely different utility.
  • Meteor Move: Her broom swing forward smash can spike foes, typically bouncing them off the stage itself in most scenarios. This consequently makes the move less effective at launching directly off the stage, but it can be used to potentially finish off those trying to reach the ledge.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: The second stage of the Charged Attack neutral special, but its unable to launch foes — strictly being a damage-dealer.
  • Weapon Twirling: Flips her broom like a helicopter for the up air, with it propelling them upward/slowing their descent.

Lotus Land Story

    Yuuka Kazami
Character Mod Creator: Mokou & Okou

A youkai dedicated to protecting her flowers.

  • Dash Attack: Her Side-B is a slow, short-ranged dash with her parasol, but landing the attack has her unleash a series of powerful flower blasts.
  • Grapple Move: Her neutral-B is more-or-less an alternate grab input for her, featuring different throws but no pummel.
  • Parasol of Pain: Wields her parasol as a melee weapon.
  • Parasol Parachute: She can float downwards slowly with her parasol using her up-air; oddly, the float cannot be cancelled in anyway.
  • Petal Power: Befitting her status as a flower youkai, landing her side-B has her send out a powerful, gigantic spread of flowers in all directions. Her Up-B also has her swing her parasol around in a spray of petals.
  • Wipe the Floor with You: Does this for the side throw from her neutral-B grab.

Mystic Square

    Shinki

Shinki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sato_shinki.png

The Touhou equivalent of Satan; ruler of Makai.

  • Assist Character: For all of Shinki's throws, she summons her servants to deal with the fighter caught in her grasp.
    • For the forward throw, Yumenko rushes into the foe to slash at them with a knife/sword.
    • For the back throw, Alice (PC-98, not the modern Alice) appears behind Shinki to call fourth a fairy/doll behind the caught foe; with the doll rushing past the foe towards Alice.
    • For the up throw, Sara dive kicks through the opponent.
    • For the Down throw, Luize fires an Energy Ball.
  • Death from Above: Her attack in her winged state up special; firing a Spread Shot of Energy Balls below.
  • Final Boss: Fought at the end of various Touhou character's Arcade mode routes.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: After using their Final Smash, the background becomes overwritten with destroyed buildings up in flames, complete with suitably dark atmosphere.
  • Prehensile Hair: Weaponizes her hair for a handful of attacks, including forming a drill around her hand and stabbing/whipping with her ponytail.
  • Secret Character: Complete certain Arcade Modes of the Touhou characters which share the same plot-line; featuring her as the Final Boss.
  • Super-Deformed: For the down input variation of her taunt, Shinki inexplicibly turns into a much smaller version of herself, based on her puppet depiction in Gensou Ningyou Enbu.

    Alice Margatroid

Alice Margatroid

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sato_alice.png
Character Mod Creator: Jio Inzagi, Prohawk

The Marionette Master.

  • Action Bomb: One of her puppets is rigged with gunpowder to explode on contact, which is summoned by Alice/Shanghai for their down special.
  • Bow and Sword in Accord: An indirect example, as while Alice herself doesn't specialize in either weapons, her dolls/Shanghai does, wielding a lance for most of the attacks and shooting a bow and arrow for the back air.
  • Marionette Master: Alice's specialty, which is reflected by how most of her attacks are done by various dolls.
  • Mighty Glacier: Aside from slow movement speed, her gimmick of utilizing dolls for her attacks give her both downsides and upsides. On one hand, the act of conjuring dolls for most attacks often result in them being dragged out for some bad frame data, with some particularly strong attacks having double-digit start-up. On the other, the range of said attacks makes her hard to approach, helped by her damage output.
  • Secret Character: Defeat her Goliath Doll in Challenge mode.
  • Slasher Smile: In contrast to her normally stoic appearance, Alice's taunt has her sporting a rather crazed open smile, wide eyed type of look as part of her pose.
  • Trap Master: Like in her fighting game appearances, some of her attacks leave dolls on the field, which she can activate manually to attack nearby foes with a spinning sword, in this case Side Special.

Exclusive to Shanghai Doll:

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sato_alice_shanghai.png
  • Assist Character: They serve as one of Alice's assists (alongside a bunch of other dolls) for Alice's moveset. Shanghai themselves even shares Alice's down special to call upon the aid of an explosive doll.
  • Blade Spam: Repeatedly jabs their lance as their neutral attack for as long as the player/AI wishes.
  • Discard and Draw: Playing as Shanghai instead of Alice means giving up the Marionette Master gimmick in favor of comparatively simpler moveset. On the plus side, they're smaller and harder to hit and have better frame data.
  • Double Jump: Five jumps in total; six if you count their up special, which is just a weak leap with no hitbox.
  • Invisibility Cloak: Pressing and holding the taunt button has Shanghai encase themself in a cloak that makes them disappear from the battlefield.
  • Moveset Clone: Subverted. Shanghai's attacks are the same as Alice's doll based attacks, just with them doing it solo. But because of how its executed, Shanghai has a vastly different playstyle that doesn't involve setting up dolls, or out-ranging the foes.
  • Practical Taunt: Vanishes from sight via Invisibility Cloak, messing with the other fighters perception of them. Downplayed, as this move is less useful in one-on-one fights, especially considering the AI can still technically see them, just unable to register attacking directly.

The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil

    Cirno

Cirno

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cirno_78.png
Crusade Mod Creator: Jio Inzagi

Ice fairy of the lake near SDM and the strongest of all the fairies... according to her, anyways.

  • An Ice Person: Cirno, being an ice fairy, has almost all of her moves consisting of utilizing ice for her attacks. From icicle spikes, to chunks of ice, to just freezing the foe solid.
  • Fragile Speedster: Small, lightweight, yet speedy and hard to hit, with their air game aided by two of her specials to keep the momentum going.
  • Harmless Freezing: The result of using her Final Smash. Its functionally different from the standard Smash Bros freeze status, lasting for a set amount of time, in addition to knockback not being affected.
  • Mythology Gag: The infamous Easy difficulty Icicle Fall is featured as one of her A+B specials, complete with glaringly obvious blind spot in front of her.
  • Scratch Damage: Their neutral special fires a constant stream of icicles, but each individual projectile only deals 1% of damage.
  • Spontaneous Weapon Creation: Courtesy of her ice powers, she can conjure short-lived weaponry for specific attacks. Including: a large sword that's swung in a front-flipping motion, and a hammer that she slams into the ground in front.
  • Stronger Than They Look: While a lot of her strengths tie into regular use of her ice attacks, there's an implication that the fairy is more physically strong than she appears at a glance. Successfully landing down tilt, a simple short-ranged kick that looks rather piddly, results in surprising damage and knockback.
  • Use Your Head: Extends her head slightly upward to knock foes with her cranium for the up air and up throw.

    Hong Meiling

Hong Meiling

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/meiling_cogu.png
Crusade Mod Creator: Manndarin

Gatekeeper of the Scarlet Devil.

  • Close-Range Combatant: Meiling is prominently a close-ranged fighter in a franchise of largely Long Range Fighters. While she has some ranged attacks, they're either weak or limited to use.
  • Everything's Better with Rainbows: Fights via rainbow-themed attacks like in both the Bullet Hell and Fighting Game appearances. Its to be expected from the martial artist with the title of "Colorful Rainbow Gatekeeper."
  • Ki Manipulation: Of the largely rainbow-colored variety. Two of her attacks are close-ranged blasts from her hand; neutral special is a one handed Charged Attack, while forward smash is a two handed variant with longer start-up.
  • Limit Break: Her Final Smash is her Spell Card "Rainbow Brilliance Palm" note  from Hisoutensoku. Meiling quickly dashing forward with an outstreched hand to trap a foe into a Delayed Explosion; a slowly growing orb of rainbow-colored energy that explodes at its max radius.
  • Secret Character: Beat the "Luna Nights" challenge in under 10 minutes.

    Koakuma

Koakuma

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ciel_koa.png
Crusade Mod Creator: Cielbami
Character Mod Origin: Midori Margatroid, RicePigeon (M.U.G.E.N)

Patchouli's familiar/assistant.

  • Gemstone Assault: Summons a giant emerald pillar below the foe for the up throw.
  • Life Drain: Her forward throw, Devil's Kiss, has Koakuma recover her percent by draining the foe's life force.
  • Making a Splash: Uses Noachian Deluge for her back throw, firing multiple bubbles of water into the back of her foe.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Technically, her name "Koakuma" is just a Fan Nickname; she was never given an official name in canon, though she's generally accepted by the fandom at large to have that as her name.
  • The Silent Bob: Her dialogue in Sakuya's Arcade route consists of gestures and charades to convey her messages, with at most responding to Sakuya's acceptance of her battle with "Koe!". She still regularly speaks in battle with the occasional banter.
  • Real-Time Weapon Change: She has four different Neutral Specials, each color-coded by four different books, that can be swapped between each other using the Taunt button.
    • Black book is Scarlet Bats; She shoots a red bat projectile that homes in on foes at a set turning rate and a gradual build-up of speed.
    • Blue book is Lightning Ball; She shoots a blue Danmaku orb that inflicts a momentary stun effect upon hitting a foe, while being relatively slow to compensate.
    • Brown book is Autumn Edge; She summons four metal blades that stay in place until either the Neutral Special is used again or another book is swapped in, at that point the blades will home in on the opponents current location.
    • Red book is Crimson Laser; She charges up a laser by holding down the special button until released or fully charged, the laser fired after-ward having its distance and damage determined by its charge, with the full charge making the range dramatically higher and inflicting multi-hit damage on foes far away enough.
  • Secret Character: Complete Patchouli's Arcade Mode to challenge and unlock her assistant.
  • Throw the Book at Them: Swings one of the books she has on hand for her forward smash.

    Patchouli Knowledge

Patchouli Knowledge

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/patchouli_mp3.png
Crusade Mod Creator: Mp3 Toaster

The Scarlet Devil Mansion's resident Hikikomori. Mastery of the seven elements associated with the days of the Japanese week, earning her the title "The One-Week Wizard."

  • Blow You Away: Weaponizes the air element for a few attacks, creating tornadoes for her forward aerial and up smash, and using gusts of air to ascend for her recovery.
  • Elemental Powers: Being a master of elemental magic, with her title of "The One-Week Wizard" earned by her creation of spells associated with the days of the Japanese week, she naturally has a fairly large repitrior of spells at her disposal, with magic including fire, electricity, water, and even gems.
  • Mighty Glacier: One of the slowest of the Touhou cast — having the lowest running speed that can aptly be described as "sluggish", with her air speed being not much better. Meanwhile, she has a variety of oppressive attacks, courtesy of her repertoire of spells, to rack up damage and overwhelm foes.
  • Secret Character: Unlocked by finding her in the "Luna Nights" challenge.
  • Throw the Book at Them: While she primarily uses her spell book to cast her spells, she does resort to swinging it for a few close-ranged attacks.

    Sakuya Izayoi

Sakuya Izayoi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sakuya_cogu.png
Crusade Mod Creator: Manndarin

The maid servant to the Scarlet Devil.

  • Adaptational Modesty: In V7 onward, unlike her appearance in the fighting games (where her sprite originates from), which depicts her wearing short socks with her legs bare, Sakuya's depicted wearing tights underneath her maid dress, like her appearance in Double Dealing Character.
  • Chainsaw Good: One option in her Neutral Special, which is thrown in an arc.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: Unlike the other characters in the roster with taunts that let them switch around their attacks, Sakuya specifically has to Down Taunt in order to swap out her subweapons.
  • Flechette Storm: A few of her attacks have her use multiple knives as projectile attacks. Particularly, down smash, side special and several variations of the neutral special embody this trope the most — Thousand Dagger in particular being a Spam Attack.
  • Mana Meter: Two sets of meters: a purple 'Time meter' that allows for Sakuya's World to happen until it drains completely, and a pink 'special meter' that fuels the other two special moves, both of which are charged overtime and through physical attacks respectively.
  • Real-Time Weapon Change: With the use of the Taunt button while crouching, Sakuya will cycle through half a dozen options for her Neutral special:
    • Stun Knife: A single fast knife that inflicts stun on an opponent.
    • Chainsaw: A large chainsaw is thrown in an arc that'll trap foes hit into a heavy multi-hit attack.
    • Thousand Dagger: Sakuya enters a Flechette Storm frenzy, rapidly throwing multiple knives forward.
    • Auto-Aim: Passively throw multiple knives at the nearest opponent — independent of Sakuya's other actions — for several seconds, at the cost of not causing any flinching.
    • Shield Dagger: Spawns a rotating shield that does constant non-flinching damage to foes near Sakuya.
  • Shout-Out: While most of her moveset is based on their Hisoutensoku appearance, her Neutral Special gives her the different subweapons from Touhou Luna Nights.
  • Teleportation: Vanishing Everything is a standard teleporting up special for Sakuya; warping her into a chosen direction.
  • Time Stands Still: Sakuya's World, her down special, where she freezes everybody in place to leave them at her mercy.note

    Remilia Scarlet

Remilia Scarlet

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/remilia_5.png

The Scarlet Devil herself.

  • Air-Dashing: In addition to the normal air dodge that's universal in Crusade, Remilia has her own variant activated via grab input, with her capable of doing so as long as enough bars in the Mana Meter is available; five in total at most without hovering or flying.
  • Close-Range Combatant: Remilia prioritizes fighting by closing the gap and overwhelm foes with her aggressive attacks, with two of her specials being oriented to both closing the gap and rushing enemies. The only ranged options she has is the fairly weak neutral special, a short ranged projectile up smash, and a Homing Projectile that only spawns when she lands close range with her Status Buff active, which just serves to complement her playstyle. This all to contrast with Flandre, who specializes in projectile attacks and trap-based neutral special.
  • Dash Attack:
    • Rapidly pounces in a zig-zag motion for the dash attack. Because of Remilia leaping into the air midway through the attack, this move can be cancelled out of with an aerial attack.
    • Side special; racing forward like a blur.
  • Homing Projectile: Upon having the Status Buff down special active, most of her normal attacks will follow up with a sigil that spawns several danmaku bullets which target the foe.
  • Secret Character: Complete the "Luna Nights" challenge as Sakuya.

    Flandre Scarlet

Flandre Scarlet

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flandre.png
Crusade Mod Creator: sk00ps
Character Mod Origin: Kurogane (M.U.G.E.N)

The sister of the Scarlet Devil who spends much of her long life confined to the basement of the mansion.

  • Air-Dashing: Like her sister above, she has her own variant of the air dash that's activated via grab input. In contrast to Remilia, Flandre's dash covers a shorter distance.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Three of her attacks, two in Gratuitous English, including "Cranberry Trap," "Lævateinn," and "Four Of A Kind."
  • Doppelgänger Attack: Her "Four of a Kind" ability, where Flandre spawns three other clones of herself to attack; manifests in the moveset as her surrounding the foe to fire point-blank danmaku, and firing large lasers together to encompass a large area for the Final Smash.
  • Gratuitous English: While primarily a Japanese speaker, most of her attack calls are in English.
  • Laser Blade: Flandre's side special, "Lævateinn", has her conjure a large fiery blade that visually appears like a lightsaber.
  • Multi-Directional Barrage: Flandre's up air, with her down special active, results in the danmaku firing out in a circular formation, covering all around her.
  • Secret Character: Complete Sakuya's Arcade Mode or defeat Marx.
  • Spread Shot: Her danmaku bullets for her normals upgrade into these with the use of the down special, as long as its sufficiently charged to last.
  • Wolfpack Boss: The final fight in Patchouli's Arcade Mode is a fight against four of herself, with two lives each.

Perfect Cherry Blossom

    Konpaku Youmu

Konpaku Youmu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sato_youmu.png

Swordswoman and servant to Yuyuko.

  • Assist Character: For a given definition, considering her ghost half is part of her. Youmu's ghost half floats alongside her for the whole battle, and — with the use of neutral special — can either charge forward at the foe or fire energy blasts at the cost of the Mana Meter.
  • Counter-Attack: Youmu down special; if a foe gets hit by Youmu's responding sword strike, they'll get hit with a dizzy status.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Youmu's choice of weaponry is the Ancestral Weapon Hakurouken, a wakizashi as large as herself.
  • Meteor Move: Her descending sword swing as part of her down air is a multi-hitting variant, dragging the foe down into the ground/blast-zone.
  • One-Hit Kill: Her Final Smash deals 100% with strong launch power; in most circumstances, the foe is launched into the blast zone without issue.

    Yuyuko Saigyouji

Yuyuko Saigyouji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuyuko_0.png

The Ghost Princess of Hakugyokurou, who brought her own life to an end due to fear of her power over death.

  • Butterfly of Death and Rebirth: She's a ghost who's strongly associated with death, and a few of her attacks (particularly neutral special) feature multi-colored butterfly danmaku.
  • Combat Hand Fan: While primarily attacks with Soul Power for this moveset, she also uses a paper fan to conjure a wave of magic — even using a pair of them to spin forward in a helicopter motion.
  • Grapple Move: Up special; if the foe gets caught in the Will-o'-the-Wisp in front of Yuyuko while she's rising, she'll carry the foe higher up while burning them until they're released. It's not a launching move, but it does result in the foe getting closer to the top blast zone, which may lead to a strong follow-up.
  • Secret Character: In reference to her Big Eater status, eat a food item during any mode (including in standard Free-For-All and Challenge mode stages) to fight her in a one-on-one standard battle.
  • Soul Power: A large majority of her attacks have her use her power over the spirits, including multiple Will-o'-the-Wisp and Hitodama Lights.
  • Squishy Wizard: The amount of physical moves she's got can be counted on one hand; Yuyuko's not a standard close-ranged combatant, for she fights strictly with her spirit-based attacks. Not only is she also incredibly floaty, her weight class is in the lower end of the spectrum.

Immaterial and Missing Power

    Suika Ibuki

Suika Ibuki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suika_0.png

Drunken Oni with the power of density manipulation.

  • Drunken Master: She's teetering all over the place in both her idle and running animation, yet she can still throw hands against various opponents who're more stable than her.
  • Fire-Breathing Diner: Takes a swig from her gourd to breath a sudden stream of fire for her forward smash.
  • Grievous Bottley Harm: Swings her gourd like a tethered weapon, one aerial using this even causing an explosion.
  • Ground Punch: Slams both of her fists into the ground to spawn two exploding fireballs from the ground that land on both sides.
  • Me's a Crowd: For the side special, she summons multiple mini-Suikas that run/fly after enemies.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: The shortest Touhou character in the roster, yet even amongst her kind is physically strong.
  • Sizeshifter: Increases her size threefold for her Final Smash; functionally like a beefed up Super Shroom Power-Up.
  • Spread Shot: Throws an Exploding Shot for the neutral special; a fast moving projectile that explodes into slower projectiles upon hitting anything.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: Perhaps as a by product of her density manipulation powers, several of Suika's physical attacks are punctuated by explosions.
  • Super Smoke: As part of her density manipulation ability, Suika turns into mist to ascend for the up special.
  • Unrealistic Black Hole: Throws a projectile that spawns a black hole for the down special. The black hole functions as a typical harmless variant; pulling foes into the center of the hole.

Imperishable Night

    Tewi Inaba
A playful youkai rabbit capable of granting luck to herself and others who catch sight of her.

    Reisen Undongein Inaba
A Moon Rabbit with the ability to manipulate light and sound into madness-inducing illusions.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: Normally, her down-throw has her summon an illusory double to stomp the opponent while her Up-B has her leap upwards while leaving behind a double that shoots bullets. If her "insanity meter" is full however, all of her attacks are enhanced by her double.
  • Eye Beams: She can shoot lasers out of her eyes, contributing to her "insanity" meter.
  • Finger Gun: Shoots some bullets by doing this for her Side-B. The bullets themselves can be stalled in midair on another side-B input, then released on yet another input.
  • Limit Break: Normally her down-B is very weak, but should her insanity meter be full, both her and her double unleash a powerful damaging blast. However, it depletes the insanity meter either way.
  • Master of Illusion: She has full control over light waves that allow her to create illusions. Not unlike Infinite from Sonic, landing her energy attacks fills up a meter which measures how insane an opponent is. Should the meter be filled, her attacks are powered up with an illusory double.
  • Promoted to Playable: In previous builds an old iteration was an AI-exclusive fighter, but a revamped version makes it into V8 with a more elaborate moveset.

    Fujiwara No Mokou

Fujiwara No Mokou

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mokou_solo.png

The Hourai Incarnate, the immortal who swore vengeance against Kaguya.

  • Cast from Hit Points: All of Mokou's moves inflict damage on her. Upon using her "Spontaneous Human Combustion" move, this happens passively until Mokou is KO-ed.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Mokou's A+B special move, aptly titled "Spontaneous Human Combustion", acts as a risky buff: damage output gets buffed based on the Life Meter upon activation, with said meter no longer being a factor for the stock; attacks become Armor Piercing; neutral special gets buffed to become a deadly move, at the cost of no healing; and for the biggest caveat, she's passively Cast from Hit Points.
  • Diving Kick: Her down special, Mt. Fuji Volcano, has Mokou propel herself at a downward angle with her foot ablaze.
  • Explosion Propulsion: Creates an explosion below herself for her up special. The non-projectile variant of her back air has her kick result in an blast that knocks her forward.
  • Hot Wings: Flies in the second half of her up special via the fiery wings of a pheonix.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter:
    • For a handful of moves, she has two sets of attacks: side tilt, up tilt, up smash, and side aerials have projectile-based attacks that she uses by default, at the cost of the Mana Meter, which results in her using a non-projectile based attack for the afformentioned moves if the meter is sufficiently empty.
    • She has a Life Meter, which goes up every time she takes damage. This meter is either used to restore her health upon successfully using Resurrection, or to buff her damage as part of her "Spontaneous Human Combustion" state.
    • She demonstrates a more extensive case of the Mana Meter than the other Touhou characters in the roster, used for her flight up special and her projectile normals. If its depleted too much, she'll no longer have access to her projectile normals or flight, visually indicated by her flashing red.
  • Playing with Fire: As befitting the immortal with a pheonix motif, she utilizes fire in a large variety of ways.
  • Secret Character: Beat Reisen in the "Bamboo Forest of the Lost" challenge to fight Mokou in a standard match.
  • Suicide Attack: Played With. her neutral special, Resurrection, is effectively this in concept: upon landing the small hitbox, Mokou suddenly encases herself in a pillar of flames to damage the foe and "revive" herself via healing. Though, whiffing the attack results in nothing happening, leaving her at the foes mercy.
  • Technicolor Fire: Her flames are normally depicted as red/orange, but they become blue upon using her Dangerous Forbidden Technique; a result of the sudden power boost.

Phantasmagoria of Flower View

    Aya Shameimaru

Aya Shameimaru

Crusade Mod Character: Jio_Inzagi, Manndarin

The crow tengu reporter of Bunbunmaru.

Mountain of Faith

    Sanae Kochiya

Sanae Kochiya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sanae_mash.png
Crusade Mod Creator: MashMan

Maiden of the Moriya Shrine and the bringer of miracles.

  • Assist Character: The two goddesses of the Moriya Shrine assists Sanae for two of her throws.
    • Kanako rushes into the foe to send them forward.
    • Suwako conjures two large hands made of rock to crush the foe between them, causing an explosion.
  • Blow You Away: In addition to some of her usual wind attacks, she can manipulate the wind to blow her projectiles around, changing their direction.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: She has the ability to hover like a few of the other Touhou girls, but it works a little differently. Whereas those who share Peach's ability just have it activated by holding the jump button, Sanae players have to use the grab input, in addition to the ability unable to have utility such as attacking during the float. Furthermore, it only lasts a set amount of time individually, but can be activated several times per airtime.
  • Goomba Springboard: For Sanae's down air, she kicks off any opponent she comes into contact with to propel herself upward and them downward; functionally a Grapple Move.
  • Limit Break: With three Spell Cards to choose from via the grab button, Sanae has three variants to her Final Smash:
    • Esoterica "Grey Thaumaturgy": spawns five magic sparks that form the ends of a star, which each split apart as their own star-shaped formation.
    • Sea Opening "The Day The Sea Split": Spawns rows of water spouts on both sides of Sanae across the ground.
    • Esoterica "9 Character Pierce": spawns multiple electric beams of various colors across the stage.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: She keeps her wind mechanic from the fighting games, mapped to the grab button; with it, she can manipulate her projectiles to fly in different directions. She can also perform a short hover in the air with the use of the same input, but don't expect it to work exactly like the hover ability of other characters.
  • Paper Talisman:
    • Wields her haraegushi as a melee weapon, with it creating Razor Winds for most of its attacks.
    • For the neutral special, Sanae spawns multiple ofuda danmaku that flies forward after a delay.
  • Razor Wind: The gust of wind spawned from up special, which is normally harmless by default, is weaponized as a projectile attack with the use of the Sanae's wind mechanic.
  • Tornado Move: With her control over the wind, Sanae conjures a tornado where she stands for the up smash.

    Nitori Kawashiro

Nitori Kawashiro

Crusade Mod Creator: Agent_5

The "Handyman of the River"; a kappa with a propensity for engineering.

  • Extendable Arms: Mechanical ones per se. Nitori extends these type of arms for her up special, either to pull herself in a chosen direction or to grapple onto a foe.
  • Extendo Boxing Glove: A large red boxing glove that pops out the side of Nitori's backpack. While it obviously serves as an attack in several instances, namely the up input for several moves, it also functions as a grab.
  • Helicopter Blender: Only in one instance are the helcopter blades used for offense: traveling forward with the forward air.
  • Helicopter Pack: Like in Hopeless Masquerade, she perpetually flies via large propeller from her backpack.
  • Secret Character: Defeat "toehoe" in the Challenge Fumo Madness.
  • This Is a Drill: For several attacks (up smash, down smash, and side special), Nitori uses a large mechanical drill from her backpack, the latter two held by her hand.
  • Wrench Whack: Twirls her wrench outward for the neutral air.

    Suwako Moriya
Character Mod Creator: Mokou & Okuu

The original, frog-loving god of the Moriya shrine, having power over earthliness itself.

  • Dishing Out Dirt: She attacks using stone sculptures pulled from the ground for her side-tilt, side-Smash, down-tilt, and down-Smash. These sculptures can take the form of hands or frogs.
  • Green Thumb: Summons trees from the ground for her up-tilt and up-Smash.
  • In a Single Bound: Her jump goes very high. Combine this with her floatiness, and this gives her a lot of aerial mobility.
  • Making a Splash: Spits a stream of water for her neutral-B and creates a geyser to recover for her up-B.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter:
    • Her walk consists of her continuously hopping around like a frog, making it hard to use her tilts.
    • Her crouch actually raises her upwards on a lily pad in contrast to most other crouches with lower the fighter's hitbox.
    • Her run puts her in a unique state inside her hat where the only attacks that can be done out of it are her dash attack, her up-tilt (on a jump input), or her neutral-B (on a B input).
  • Rings of Death: Creates razor-sharp iron rings as a melee weapon in some normals, throwing one as a projectile for her Side-B.

Scarlet Weather Rhapsody

    Iku Nagae

Iku Nagae

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/iku_mash.png

Oarfish youkai and messenger of the Dragon God.

  • Blow You Away: Downplayed. Her wind powers are largely used to aid some of her scarf attacks.
  • Clothing Combat: Whips the elongated cloth of her scarf and shawl for most of her normals.
  • Secret Character: Beat Classic Mode with Lucemon.
  • Shock and Awe: Borrowing from the power of the Dragon God, she can create and manipulate lightning for some attacks. Here, she mostly conjures it as orbs of electricity, though in one instance, down throw, she summons a bolt from the heavens to smite her foe.
  • Shoryuken: Rises high into the air via rising uppercut for the up special. But instead of a fist, its an arm drill made of her shawl.
  • Spread Shot: Two variants for the neutral and side special, both electric.
    • Neutral special is the Initial Burst; firing three orbs of electricity — five if charged.
    • Side special is the Exploding Shot; firing a large electric orb, which stops after a certain distance to soon after split into four smaller orbs. Unlike the normal execution of this trope variant, the stationary behaviour of both projectiles make it effective stage control.
  • This Is a Drill: Made of her cloth no less. Iku conjures an arm drill around her arm as a means of offense, including her Shoryuken up special.

Subterranean Animism

Crusade Mod Creator: Jio_Inzagi

The embodiment and manipulator of jealousy.

  • Color-Coded Wizardry: She's the embodiment of Green-Eyed Monster, and her energy-based attacks/Eye Beams are naturally green colored.
  • Doppleganger Attack: Summons a clone that jumps forwards and throws a spread shot downwards in her up special. If the special button is merely tapped, she summons a clone where she started and she actually jumps, but if the button is held down, it will turn out to be the clone that jumps forwards.
  • Eye Beams: A few of her attacks have her cast her "Green-Eyed Monster" stare in this manner.
  • Orbiting Particle Shield: Her neutral air, spawning star danmaku all around her.
  • Spread Shot: Her Side Special and Up Special both have her fire one, either forward or downwards.

    Utsuho Reiuji

Utsuho Reiuji

Crusade Mod Creator: Manndarin

The hell raven with the power of nuclear fusion.

  • Air-Dashing: Both her forward and back air propells Okuu forward, the latter aided by Explosion Propulsion, while the former can have its momentum reversed with an extra attack input.
  • Arm Cannon: While it doesn't look it at first glance, her right arm's control rod functions as one; capable of firing atomic Energy Balls and solar lasers.
  • Atomic Superpower: Okuu controls nuclear fission, courtesy of The Power of the Sun. In particular, two of her specials symbolize this power: a glowing orb with a nuclear atom center.
  • Charged Attack:
    • Her smash attacks have two variations to them, the fully charged smash attacks spawning multiple/larger solar bursts; her forward smash in particular spawning rows of beams that covers thrice the normal distance.
    • Two out of three of her neutral special options can be charged by holding the input down. The default's charged attack only adds more lasers, while the other neutral special is effectively two different moves: a slow-moving Energy Ball that strictly does damage upon exploding at its peak rang, and a Wave-Motion Gun.
  • The Ditz: She's a bit of a bird brain, putting it lightly. The story of her Arcade Mode has her hunt for Cirno, another character notorious for being a Baka, and demonstrating herself as the bigger idiot of the two by somehow coming to the conclusion that the ice fairy is a brainwashing force of evil.
  • Fireball: Okuu's Final Smash has her conjure a large Spirit Bomb-like solar mass that's dropped onto the foe.
  • Explosion Propulsion: By creating an explosion behind or below them, Okuu propells herself for the back air and up special respectively.
  • Ground Punch: she can slam the ground with either her control rod arm or her stone foot to cause it to erupt with beams of light.
  • The Power of the Sun: Creates solar pillars whenever she slams the ground, and she effectively recreates the sun for the Final Smash.
  • Secret Character: Find Utsuho in the "Bamboo Forest of the Lost" challenge and beat her in a back-to-back stamina and regular match.
  • Spread Shot: Fires multiple Slow Lasers in a Spray Burst formation for one of her neutral specials. Said lasers fire at an upward angle, serving as an Anti-Air.

    Koishi

Koishi Komeiji

Crusade Mod Creator: Amiine

The satori who closed her Third Eye to become an Empty Shell.

  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: After several seconds of dashing, Koishi will end the dash of her own volition with a lunging knee jab — effectively a second dash attack different from her standard.
  • Moonwalk Dance: Koishi's alternate walking animation, which occurs while playing Koishi with certain alts (namely, one of the Trope Namer himself, Michael Jackson), "walking" backwards while pulling the brim of her hat down.
  • Perception Filter: Whenever Koishi becomes transparent when out of the radius of certain characters or during half of her dash, she effectively becomes intangible to attacks (usually projectiles) from enemies, due to her enemies being unable to perceive her. This passive ability can be disabled by setting her to "Non-Passive" on the character select screen, though it's still available for her limited dash.
  • Secret Character: Find her in the "Luna Nights" challenge and beat her in a back-to-back stamina and regular match.
  • Skip of Innocence: Skips forward in a child-like manner for her dash animation. Played With in Koishi's case, as the "innocence" portrayed is the result of her being an Empty Shell.
  • Super Cute Superpowers: Koishi fights via various heart formations and roses. The "cute" part is subverted if you know of her psychological theme and her state.
  • Third Eye: Attached to Koishi via a purple tendril is this and her heart: a perpetually closed third eye that left her an Empty Shell, making it dead weight. Nonetheless, she still makes use of it in a non-standard fashion - as a bludgeoning whip for her grab and throws.

    Nue Houjuu

Nue Houjuu

Crusade Mod Creator: Jio_Inzagi

The Youkai with a hidden true form.

  • Devil's Pitchfork: She's the Token Evil Teammate of Byakuren's group, and she wields a three-pronged pitchfork for her normal attacks.
  • Diving Kick: Her down air is a diving dropkick which can spike foes.
  • Flying Saucer: For her A+B inputs, Nue summons a color-coded saucer.
    • Neutral input is red; floating left and right firing a weak, non-flinching laser at the nearest opponent to rack up damage.
    • Side input is blue; same as above, but fires larger, slower, more powerful laser beams.
    • Down input is green; hovers over the nearest foe, firing a strong beam from above after a set amount of time.
  • Gemstone Assault: Her side special, spawning a cluster of crystal shards of varying intensity based on charge.
  • Secret Character:
    • Complete Murasa's Arcade Mode.
    • Find her secret encounter in "Cut Man Challenge" and beat her in a back-to-back stamina and regular match.

Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom

    Clownpiece

Clownpiece

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sato_clownpiece.png
Crusade Mod Creator: Jio_Inzagi
Character Mod Origin: Hisoutensoku 2

The fairy from Hell who wears the American flag for her attire.

  • Air-Dashing: Two of her aerials, up and down, are more offense-oriented variants unlike the universal Crusade air-dash, propelling themself in the respective direction. The former can only do so once per airtime, while the latter can allow for as many attacks as the frame data can allow.
  • Breath Weapon: She can't technically breath fire, rather she blows into her torch to invoke this trope, creating a stream of flames for the down smash.
  • Building Swing: Via a conjured light beam connected by two stars, she swings forward then upward for the up special.
  • Casting a Shadow: For her up smash, she casts an Inversion of the Pillar of Light: a dark-colored beam strikes from the heavens in front of Clownpiece.
  • Colony Drop: Clownpiece grabs a (comparatively small) moon to slam into the ground for the Final Smash.
  • Playing with Fire: A majority of her attacks makes use of the Hellfire from her torch, whether as a melee attack or as a ground hazard.
  • Lunacy: Courtesy of Clownpiece being a subordinate of Hecatia that took influence from the moon, she weaponizes the very satellite for her forward smash and Final Smash, the latter being a miniature Colony Drop.
  • Secret Character: Beat the "Luna Nights" challenge as Cirno.
  • Shout-Out: Taunting or using down special on the ground has Clownpiece do the classic Jonathan Joestar hand-over-face pose.
  • Star Power: Taking influence from the American flag, she fires magic-conjured stars for her neutral special.
  • Unmoving Plaid: The stripes and star patterns on her red, white and blue outfit is strictly depicted flat against her sprite.
  • Vocal Dissonance: What few vocals she has give her an oddly deep and quiet voice, which is dissonant with the fact that she's a small fairy.

Perfect Memento in Strict Sense

    Hieda No Akyuu

Hieda No Akyuu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akyuu.png
Crusade Mod Creator: MashMan
Character Mod Origin: Nep Heart (M.U.G.E.N)

Author of the Gensokyo Chronicle and the ninth child of Miare, reincarnation of Hieda no Are who retained memories of her past lives.

  • Adaptational Badass: Akyuu was not a combatant in her home series, even debuting in a less action focused spinoff. Here she can duke it out to the rest of the cast.
  • Art Attacker: Among the improbable weapons she brings to the table, one of them is brushes, which she uses to weaponize ink in a wand and/or sword-like motion.
  • Ass Kicks You: Hip checks for the back air, aided by a sudden boost in momentum backwards.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Her unlock requirements involve finding and deleting a text file made by her from within the game's files.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Uses brushes, plushies of herself, scrolls, books, and her scarf as weapons in her moveset.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: While she does appear to have a Mana Meter at first glance, it's actually a charge indicator for her hidden special moves; the extra special A+B moves are only availiable after a certain level, but they aren't limited by a cost.
  • Secret Character: Go into the game files, find the text file written by her that tells you not to deleted it, do so, and then fight her in a standard match the moment you boot up the game.
  • Status Buff: Her neutral A+B input move; by default, it only serves to multiply the charge of the meter for her attacks, but at level 4, it grants Akyuu an attack buff that also makes her take more damage.
  • Trap Master: Akyuu can set down books (red-colored on the ground or black-colored in the air) that'll react to the presence of foes by unleashing a sudden elemental attack — grounded books creating a pillar of stone, and aerial books spawning ice.
  • Use Your Head: For the forward throw, after reeling back a bit, Akyuu slams her head against the fighter in her grasp.
