    Animal Crossing Spirits
  • Celeste is represented as Jigglypuff who heavily favors using Rest, referencing how Celeste, as an owl, can be found sleeping during the daytime when you visit the museum. This Jigglypuff also wears a bow just like Celeste does.
  • Tom Nook is represented by an Incineroar who gets healed from attacks and has the ability to perform random Final Smashes — a reference to how unfair Tom Nook's debts can be. In addition, the spirit can be enhanced, after which it depicts Tom Nook in his Nookington's outfit. Nookington is usually the final upgrade Tom Nook's store can go through in the Animal Crossing games. The spirit allows you to attract nearby items towards you, similar to how Tom Nook sells furniture and tools.
  • Tom Nook's nephews, Timmy and Tommy, are 2 Villagers with raccoon tails and favor going after items, since they need stock for their shop. They also own one of the five shops available and sell spirits that are related to items, as is their usual role in the Animal Crossing games
  • Sable, Label, and Mabel, the Able Sisters, are represented by three Sonics, who start with the Drill Arm. Obviously, the Able sisters are all hedgehogs, like Sonic, and the Drill Arm is arguably the closest thing to a sewing machine in the game. They also increase the durability of the player's shield, as if they were buying brand new clothing from their shop.
  • Digby is represented by Isabelle (wearing his clothes even); makes sense since they're siblings.
  • Serena is a Palutena due to both being goddesses. She's fought in the Fountain of Dreams as she's the goddess of a fountain, and hammers appear, being the closest thing in Smash to the axes she can grant.
  • Katrina the fortune teller is another Palutena fight, but with both fighters taking max damage after a few seconds. Perhaps she saw some bad luck in your future. Her spirit also prevents your controls from being reversed. Looks like luck is on your side.
  • Joan is a blue Peach who favors her down special (pulling up vegetables from the ground, as Joan is a turnip trader), and is accompanied by a dark-skinned female Villager ally who uses her up and down aerials (both of which utilize the turnips she sells). The "stats up after eating" ability Joan provides is a reference to how eating Joan's turnips (or any other edible item for that matter) increases the player's stamina.
  • Lloid is represented by a team of two Villagers who favor their side specials (Lloid Rocket), and two Isabelles who favor their down special (Lloid Trap). The fight takes place in Mushroomy Kingdom, which is implied to be the ruins of the original Mushroom Kingdom, referencing the fact that the gyroids in Animal Crossing are based on Haniwa figures, ancient Japanese artifacts used as funerary objects.
  • Copper & Booker are two Duck Hunts who like to shield, and gain a bonus to their defense after taking a certain amount of damage. (They're guard dogs.) Since they tend to be found on the outskirts of town in the games they appear in, their battle takes place on the Bridge of Eldin. They are a Master Spirit who can teach you a style that dramatically boosts your defense but also dramatically reduces your offense; again, they're guard dogs.
  • Brewster is a battle against Falco on Luigi's Mansion, representing his café. Food items will periodically spawn during the battle, summoning either Isabelle or a Villager as backup, representing both Brewster's incredibly good coffee and the various villagers that drop by The Roost for a freshly made cup. His spirit grants immunity to Sleep-inducing floors, as if he's serving you a nice, warm cup of coffee.
  • Summoning K.K. Slider (as DJ K.K.) requires the cores of a Labrador Retriever (a breed of dog) and 9-Volt and 18-Volt, who, like K.K., moonlight as disc jockeys. After enhancement, he turns into his normal guitar-playing incarnation. His battle has him as Duck Hunt on Fourside to represent his DJing. After awhile, three villagers will show up, representing audiences for his show and then later on, the Squid Sisters will appear, representing K.K.'s concert.
  • Summoning Sonny Resetti requires cores of Mettaur, Dugtrio and Muddy Mole, the three of whom are moles just like Resetti, and two additional attack type cores, which is a nod to how Resetti gets more and more angrier the more the player quits without saving in the Animal Crossing games prior to New Horizons (which causes him to give them a long lecture). When equipped, the spirit decreases the user's jump power, as Resetti is a mole who burrows underground and thus is never seen jumping.
  • Summoning Pete requires cores of a Cucco (an avian animal) and the Postman from Majora's Mask (who is a postman, just like Pete). Equipping Pete's spirit grants the user immunity against strong winds, referencing how Pete, being a pelican, is able to fly without a problem.
  • Summoning Phyllis & Pelly requires cores of Mio & Mayu Amakura (who are twin sisters) and Pitch (an avian character). Their battle pits you against Pit and Dark Pit, who share similar traits to Pelly and Phyllis respectively (Pit and Pelly are happy-go-lucky characters, while Dark Pit and Phyllis are more on the cynical side of things), and has everyone move way too fast and makes crates filled with all sorts of items spawn from time to time, representing the sisters working part-time at the post office. When equipped, their spirit grants the user a Back Shield, which is a nod to how Pelly works the day shift at the post office and Phyllis works the night shift.
  • Summoning Blathers requires the cores of a T-Rex, a Beetle (the car from Excitebots: Trick Racing, not the bug), and a Fishman. Blathers is a museum curator, and he collects all kinds of weird fish, bug, and fossil samples. Like Celeste, his battle (as the Villager) is fought with an involvement of sleeping, this time with a sleep-induced floor and items will be pulled towards him since he's accepting donations.
  • Summoning Tortimer requires the cores of Old Man Lobber, a fellow elderly anthropomorphic animal, and a Koopa Troopa, a fellow turtle.
  • Dr. Shrunk is represented by a pink Luigi who taunts a lot, as his job in the games is to tell "jokes" that teach players how to emote.
  • Redd, the shady furniture-selling kitsune, is represented by a Fox who gets items drawn to him. Equipping his support spirit makes you start the battle with 30% of damage, but your defense will be increased in return, referencing how Redd sells art (which can potentially be counterfeit art) and rare furniture for high prices.
  • Rover as Sheik represents the fact that in the Japanese version, he is literally called "Unknown Cat" as well as sharing a color scheme. He is accompanied by two Villagers since he's usually the one who ask your name and where you're moving to. The battle takes place in the Spirit Train, where you meet him in a train in both the original game and New Leaf.
  • Gulliver is a Falco with the effect being heavy wind, one common reason he is often marooned at shore is because of a storm.
  • Don is a Luigi, who share similar personalities, who starts with a hammer as a substitute for a pickaxe and can use it longer than usual. Earthquakes periodically appear since he usually digs underground.
  • Harriet is an Isabelle with swords appearing throughout the battle with increased power. Since Harriet is a hair stylist, it makes sense for sharp items like swords to appear since it's the closest thing to scissors. Equipping her spirit also increases the attack power of melee weapons, showing how Harriet is a very skilled hairdresser.
  • Lyle is a King Dedede, both being very slippery individuals, who has increased attack and defense when at high damage since he is showing off the insurance he offers.
  • Kaitlin & Katie's battle has you fight two Isabelles in a fog covered Smashville since when they usually enter your town, both of them are separated from each other and you must reunite the two. Equipping their spirit also makes any fog present at a stage disappear completely, as if mother and daughter had been reunited once again.
  • Cyrus & Reese is represented by the Ice Climbers with items appearing after awhile. As they are shopkeepers, this makes perfect sense.
  • Gracie is a yellow Yoshi with transformation items appearing, since Gracie is giving fashion advice. The floor being sleep inducing could represent the Dream Suite which is next to Gracie's shop in New Leaf.
  • Kicks is a Lucario with the fighters having increased speed and the floor is slippery. Kicks will shine shoes for the playable character but looks like in this case, he did too good of a job. His spirit does a much better job showcasing his ability to shine shoes by making the user immune to sticky floors.
  • Leif is Diddy Kong in the Brawl version of Yoshi Island since it represents his occupation as a gardener. The timers appearing makes the opponent of whoever grabs it slow as a sloth, which is what Leif is.
  • The home designer Lottie is a Jigglypuff who is holding a drill and hammers appearing, items that can be useful for redesigning a home.
  • Orville & Wilbur are two Falcos with increased attack who are distracted by items, the only ones appearing being Cuccos which are fellow birds. The battle takes place on Pilotwings since they are both in charge of the airports. Their spirit gives increased attack and speed when undamaged, a joke over the fact that both of them are dodos, an extinct animal.
  • C.J. is represented by Isabelle who uses her side special attack as it is a fishing rod, is accompanied by two Inklings who spam their up special in reference to the fact that you can fish for squids, and is fought on the boat section of Wuhu Island. His spirit grants item gravitation. In other words, he's fishing for items.
  • Flick is a red Yoshi who is easily distracted by items. The only items that appear during his fight are the Bee Nest and the Beetle, which makes Flick's attraction to items a clear reference to his love of bugs. He also has increased attack and speed after a while, possibly referencing the fact that he goes crazy with joy if you sell an insect to him. Equipping his spirit also increases the power of your throws, as if Flick had swung his net in order to catch a bug.
  • Daisy Mae's spirit battle is somewhat a reverse of her grandmother Joan's spirit battle above; her spirit is represented by a striped-shirt female Villager with an invisible Peach ally, but both maintain their presence of using turnip-based moves as Daisy Mae takes on Joan's role in New Horizons.

    ARMS Spirits
  • Spring Man is a Mii Brawler in the costume based on him that has attack enhanced on his limbs.
  • Ribbon Girl is summoned through the spirits of ChuChu (who has a prominent hair ribbon) and the Elite Beat Divas (who are also dancers and cheerleaders). Her battle has a Mii Brawler in her costume who has an extra midair jump in reference to her special abilities in her home game.
  • Ninjara can be summoned using the cores of Shinobu and Shadow Man, who are both fellow ninjas. If you downloaded his Mii costume, his battle will have a Mii Brawler wearing his costume, otherwise fellow ninja Greninja represents him. The fight has him with increased move speed with a boomerang in Suzaku Castle, a Japanese-like stage similar to Ninja College.
  • Master Mummy is a white Donkey Kong who has super armor and favors grabs but is slow. The battle takes place in Dracula's Castle, to represent the similar crumbling Mausoleum.
  • Mechanica is a stamina battle against a giant Wendy, who rides in the Koopa Clown Car like Mechanica's Mini-Mecha and has super slow armor to represent her resistance to light attacks.
  • Twintelle is represented by a Bayonetta who favors using Smash attacks, since both she and Twintelle have Prehensile Hair and have the ability to slow down the time of things around them.
  • Byte & Barq are represented by Mega Man as Byte and a metal Duck Hunt as Barq. You must defeat Mega Man to count as a victory since Byte is the main fighter in his game. Mega Man likes to repeatedly use his Rush Coil Up Special to bounce off of Rush; Barq is similarly installed with a spring that allows Byte to bounce off of him. The Spirit itself is weak to water, referencing their ironic rusting tendency despite them being put on beach patrol.
  • Kid Cobra is a purple Min Min who carries a Drill and will have increased speed at high damage. The only items that will spawn are bumpers which are similar to his recommended ARMS; The Clapper. The fight takes place in a Battlefield Fourside.
  • Helix is a Dark Samus who can both grow big and shrink at any given moment, much like Helix's shapeshifting abilities. At the start of the battle, Dark Samus has a Pokéball that will release Ditto, a fellow Blob Monster.
  • Max Brass is a King K. Rool in a Stamina battle who will grow big and gain increased attack power when low in damage, referencing his Critical Status Buff which the player can also use as a Support Spirit Ability. The battle takes place in an Omega Norfair.
  • Min Min is a female Corrin who abuses her Dragon Fang Shoot, being an attack that involves her arm. In her own game, Min Min can turn one of her own arms into a dragon for attacks.

    Banjo-Kazooie Spirits
  • The Buzzbomb is represented by three gold-colored Ridleys who try to stay in the air as much as possible and ram at you with Wing Blitz, much how the enemy itself fights.
  • Tooty is Diddy Kong wearing pink and often shielding, alluding to her Damsel in Distress tendencies. Midway through the fight, Banjo will show up to try and save her from you; his being late to the fight references how he slept in during Tooty's kidnapping at the hands of Gruntilda.
  • Bottles is represented by a gray-furred Donkey Kong that turns invisible, referencing the character burrowing underground and out of sight. He often uses his side special to try and drive you into the ground, which is one of the many moves Bottles taught to Banjo; Sakurai has even noted that the two moves are extremely similar.
  • Mumbo Jumbo is a golden Mii Fighter dressed up as Skull Kid, playing into his feathery savage appearance with Majora's Mask resembling Mumbo's skull-shaped head. He is then joined by a giant gold metal R.O.B., standing in for the Golden Goliath he can Summon in Banjo-Tooie's Mayahem Temple.
  • Jiggies are played by five yellow Kirbies hopping in place to emulate the collectibles' movements, scattered around Great Cave Offensive in a timed stamina match. Jiggies are often involved in puzzles of this nature, the player needing to accomplish a test of dexterity in order to acquire one.
  • Jinjos are played by four Mr. Game & Watches that constantly rush into you to deal damage as well as use their down-air, as if they're pecking you with their beaks like they did to Gruntilda. The final Mr. Game & Watch is a Giant blue variant as a stand-in for the Mighty Jinjonator, which this Spirit can be enhanced into.
  • Gruntilda is a giant green King Dedede fought in a stamina battle in a poison-floored version of Find Mii's Omega form. The stage looks similar to the top of Gruntilda's Lair where the witch was fought in Banjo-Kazooie, and the poison acts as somewhat of a reference to the toxic fumes the Hag 1 expelled in Tooie. Another reference to the gas comes in Grunty's ability, which greatly increases your stats in a poisonous environment. Dedede also comes with a Star Rod to simulate Grunty's magic blasts. Green Dr. Marios throwing pills will occasionally spawn as stand-ins for Klungo, her Beleaguered Assistant, throwing his vials, and three of them appear in succession as a nod to Tooie giving him three boss fights. Sometime during the battle, a Smash Ball will appear. If you're playing as Banjo and Kazooie and Dedede's health is low enough, you can potentially recreate the first half of the first game's ending by summoning the Mighty Jinjonator as their Final Smash and finish off Dedede just like Gruntilda.

    Bayonetta Spirits
  • Loki is represented by an orange Sheik, the latter's speed and Needles representing the former's nimbleness and throwing cards. The Sheik will occasionally turn invisible during the fight, reflecting how when he was first encountered in Bayonetta 2, he was stuck in Purgatorio, which made him Invisible to Normals (which he commented on when Bayonetta talked to him). The fight takes place on the Umbra Clock Tower, much like the battle against Loki's Evil Twin/Enemy Without, Loptr. Furthermore, the Sheik will constantly try to use the Stopwatches that spawn during the fight, referencing Loki's power over "the Remembrance of Time". Lastly, his Spirit blesses the owner with a Black Hole item, alluding to his "Power Over Nothingness" that he uses towards the end of Bayonetta 2.
  • Speaking of Loptr, he appears as a Spirit in his "Prophet" form, represented by a Bayonetta in a similarly white costume with increased punching power, representing the phantasmal fists that he creates to attack during all his boss fights. In World of Light, he appears in the Mysterious Dimension as a fake answer to the trivia question that asks "Who created the Subspace Army and waged war?". While he didn't create the Subspace Army, he did help escalate the war between the Lumen Sages and Umbra Witches by murdering Rosa and driving Balder to madness.
  • Jeanne is simply a battle against Bayonetta in the red alternate costume based on her (with her boss theme, "Red and Black", playing to boot); unsurprising, since they share most of their abilities. She's also strengthened in her ranged attacks, nodding to how her bullets are powered up in comparison to Bayonetta's during her boss fights. The stage is Umbra Clock Tower, since Jeanne first appears as an NPC ally to Bayonetta during the opening stage of the first Bayonetta, which the stage is based on. She can also be enhanced into Cutie J, an alternate costume that she can wear as a playable character, which is in itself a modified version of the outfit she wears when she stops fooling around during her last battle. Furthermore, Cutie J's Easier Dodging ability is based on how Jeanne, as a playable character, can dodge endlessly without cooldown.
  • Cereza is a tiny-sized Isabelle that represents her innocence and being unable to defend herself. She's accompanied by Bayonetta, who assumed a motherly role to her as well as being her future self. You only need to defeat Isabelle herself in order to win the fight, referencing the Escort Missions in the first Bayonetta, which give the player a Non-Standard Game Over should Cereza's regenerating health bar be fully depleted. The stage of her battle, Luigi's Mansion, is a nod to the similarly mysterious citadels of Vigrid where she is found.
  • Rodin, the bartender who forges weapons with the souls of demons, is summoned with café owner Brewster and ghostly sentient sword Aegislash. He can also be enhanced into his Superboss form, titled "The Infinite One", turning him into a Legend rank Spirit due to him being considered a Physical God. His Critical Health Attack ability is based on how he transforms into his Infinite One form after taking enough damage during his battle in Bayonetta 2 and how his attacks become much faster when on really low health.
  • Balder is fought on the Umbra Clock Tower as a male Robin in a white costume. Robin isn't quite giant (though he's called giant by the game), but he is taller than his default, to reference Balder's notable height. He can be enhanced into Father Balder, the form he takes as a boss after absorbing Cereza in the original Bayonetta, and comes with the Franklin Badge Equipped effect, referencing the Deflector Shields that he uses to block Bayonetta's bullets during his boss fight.
  • The Masked Lumen is represented by Meta Knight, a similarly masked man with a penchant for golden blades, with a matching white and yellow color scheme.
  • Fortitudo is represented by fellow fire-breathing dragon Charizard, with Low Gravity in effect to reference the gravity-defying climax of his boss fight.
  • The Affinities are represented by several copies of Pit, a fellow angel. They are fought on the Umbra Clock Tower with "One of a Kind" as the theme music, recreating the opening of the first Bayonetta. Their Novice rank is no doubt a reference to how, in their home game, they're the most basic of enemy types, and they have a tendency to suffer physical abuse at the hands of Bayonetta.
  • The serpentine Inspired angels are represented by a horde of Mewtwo, whose tail gives it a serpentine appearance, with Rocket Belts to replicate their Flight. Like with the Affinities, the battle takes place on the Umbra Clock Tower with "One of a Kind" as the theme music to replicate the opening of the first Bayonetta. In reference to the Inspired that attacks Bayonetta on a spiraling bridge in the first Bayonetta, the Inspired Spirit is found on a bridge within Dracula's Castle in Adventure Mode.
  • Gomorrah, the Devourer of the Divine, is represented by a Bayonetta who gets a sudden Final Smash, which involves summoning Gomorrah himself, with the player taking sudden damage in order to make the Final Smash's instant-kill condition easier to meet. Fittingly, "Let's Hit The Climax" plays during this fight, as the song plays in the original Bayonetta whenever Bayonetta summons a demon like Gomorrah to finish off a boss fight.
  • Madama Butterfly is represented by a Bayonetta who loves to use Smash Attacks, which summon the demoness's limbs through Wicked Weaves. Her Spirit Battle's Poison Fog hazard and her Spirit's unique Poison Heal ability is a nod to how, in Anarchy Reigns, Bayonetta's Wicked Weaves can inflict Poison. As a being of darkness from Inferno, she is enslaved alongside Bayonetta herself on Dharkon's side in The Last Battle. Summoning Madama Butterfly requires Shanoa (A witch), an Aparoid (which resembles a monstrous butterfly), a Neutral-type core (as she doesn't have any particular ambition outside of her pact), and a Support-type core (as her pact empowers Bayonetta)
  • The flowery demoness Alraune is a Bayonetta with a strengthened Lip's Stick, and gives a Fire Flower when equipped. The stage the battle takes place in, the Garden of Hope, stands in for Alraune's thorn-hedge palace, which is located in the depths of Inferno's Johnson Forest.
  • Intrepid Reporter Luka is represented by a black Greninja. Aside from the Greninja's black body color and Overly-Long Tongue-scarf matching Luka's black leather clothes and knitted scarf respectively, Luka is well known for showing up at odd and inopportune times, and is considered so unpredictable that "not even a god (with the ability to see into the future) can see him coming". Fitting for the similarly unpredictable Greninja. His Sudden Invincibility when he takes enough damage references his penchant for surviving life threatening situations by the skin of his teeth, such as when he survived being supposedly killed by both Jeanne and Father Balder during the last few Chapters of the first Bayonetta. The battle takes place in New Donk City, referencing both the metropolis of Isla Del Sol and the prologue city area from the first and second games respectively.

    Castlevania Spirits

General

  • Dracula is an enhanceable spirit; however, you get a support spirit of his monster form at the same time, so who or what could he possibly enhance into if not that? Soma Cruz, his reincarnation.
  • The Mummy is two Sheiks with super armor who prefer throwing you, a nod to how you fight the Mummy in the original Castlevania. Fittingly enough, he's also found in the same place he is fought in Dracula's Castle in World of Light.
  • With the Creature and Flea Man, you fight a giant Mii Brawler wearing a hockey mask, who represents the Creature, and Diddy Kong, who represents Flea Man, with an electrified floor, referencing their original boss fight. Much like with the Mummy, he is also found in the same place he is fought in Dracula's Castle in World of Light.
  • Death is represented by Robin with Death's Scythe, while you are hard to launch, but periodically take sudden damage, allowing him opportunities to instantly kill you with the scythe. This is, once again, recreating the original boss fight with himnote , and like the other 2 bosses, he is also found in the same place he is fought in Dracula's Castle in World of Light.
  • A Medusa Head is represented by a floaty Meta Knight, with five small Mewtwos representing Medusa's snake hair (Alternatively, Meta Knight is the actual Medusa and the Mewtwo are regular Medusa Heads). Mewtwo’s Shadow Ball follows a wavy flight path when its charge is low, similar to Medusa Heads. The Medusa Heads are infamously hard to deal with without timing your jumps carefully, so this fight enforces this by occasionally slowing you down. (The slowdown may also reference how some Medusa Heads can turn the player character to stone (therefore stifling their movement) in Castlevania games that include Status Effects). The Medusa Head also provides increased aerial defense, which makes sense given that Medusa Heads usually fly around the area.

Dracula's Curse

  • Alucard is fought alongside Simon, meant to be Trevor Belmont, with Alucard appearing as an assist trophy. He also guards Richter and Dracula in World of Light, both of which he has had to fight in Symphony of the Night. "Dracula's Castle" is the theme for this fight, much like how it served as Alucard's in Castlevania: Judgment.
  • And speaking of Trevor, the fight against him has him as Simon with Palutena and Sheik as stand-ins for Sypha and Grant, with Alucard also appearing.

Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night

  • Shaft is represented as Robin who favors using Nosferatu, a reference to Shaft being a sorcerer specializing in dark magic. Additionally, his occasionally turning invisible references either the Teleport Spam he uses in the fight, or his status in Symphony as a ghost who can't be seen without special equipment. He's assisted by Richter, who he mind-controlled to fight against Alucard. Equipping the spirit increases the user's magic attacks, not surprising given that Shaft is an evil sorcerer.
  • Maria, as Zelda, is fought alongside a tiny Falco, Incineroar, and Charizard as her Familiarsnote  in battle. She also starts the battle with a Cucco, as her regular attacks were birds. She is also a Spirit who can be enhanced upon hitting Level 99; in this case, she transforms into her older form from SOTN. Adult Maria grants an extra midair jump when equipped; this references Maria's ability to Double Jump in all of her playable appearances (most notably Rondo of Blood, where the other playable character, Richter, lacked this ability).

Curse of Darkness

  • Hector being represented by Robin doesn't make much sense, but the other conditions fit well — lots of battering items appear, reflecting Hector's skill as a blacksmith, and Ridley backs him up, representing a Devil-type Innocent Devil.

Portrait of Ruin

  • Charlotte Aulin is represented as Zelda who favors using Din's Fire, a reference to her use of fire tomes. She is then joined by Richter, referencing Portrait of Ruin's whip-wielding co-star Jonathan Morris and possibly referencing the Whip's Memory fight and the unlockable Richter Mode after beating the game on normal. When equipped by the player, her trait is to improve the power of magic attacks, a nod to Charlotte's status as a Child Prodigy in the study of magic.

Order of Ecclesia

  • Shanoa is represented by Bayonetta in her "witch with no memories" look. This is because they've both got outfits that expose the back and they've both lost their memories. Heavy wind is in effect because the cover of Order of Ecclesia has Shanoa's hair blowing in the wind to expose her back. Bayonetta will also sometimes get access to her final smash suddenly, to summon Gomorrah. This could be another reference to Shanoa lifting up her hair to absorb glyphs, as Bayonetta uses her hair as a medium to summon. It could also be a reference to the three Custos glyphs which allow Shanoa to control the power and jaws of the demon hound Cerberus, Gomorrah being primarily used for his terrifyingly powerful jaws. Finally, it could be a reference to Shanoa's ability to use the Dominus glyphs which contain the power of Dracula, as Bayonetta's summons have her contain and use the power of demons.

Lords of Shadow

  • Gabriel is represented by Simon as protagonists of their games. In an ironic flip, Gabriel in the Lords of Shadow-verse becomes his series' version of Dracula.

    Donkey Kong Spirits

Donkey Kong

  • Donkey Kong & Lady is a bright giant Donkey Kong in a timed stamina battle with a red Peach representing Pauline as an ally, seemingly trying to prevent kidnapping from happening, as implied by the limited time and how the battle is lost if the ally is KO'd.
  • Donkey Kong Jr. is a yellow-haired DK whose throws are more effective, as he moves around mainly by grabbing and swinging on vines. After a little while, a similarly-colored giant DK (his father, a.k.a. the one from the original Donkey Kong) will appear to back him up, but you only need to defeat Junior to win the battle.
  • Stanley (Donkey Kong 3) is a blue Villager with a Gust Bellows representing his bug sprayer.

Donkey Kong Country series

  • A good chunk of the Donkey Kong Spirits in the World of Light are located in the DK Island sub-map, which recreates the whole Kongo Jungle map from the original DKC and has Spirit fights representing its levels (with Diddy taking the place of Very Gnawty's Lair). Cranky, Funky, and Candy are all fought in their respective buildings, the "Reptile Rumble" cave level is represented through a Zinger-possessed Pikachu (they share a yellow-black color scheme, and the Pikachu is holding an Unira, a spiky enemy) in the Great Cave Offensive, and the spot where "Coral Capers" took place is guarded by Enguarde the Swordfish in The Great Bay.
  • Swanky Kong is represented as Donkey Kong, obviously, but his fixation on items references Swanky's love for fancy things. The items in question are Poké Balls, a nod to the circus game that he hosted in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!.
  • Kaptain K. Rool is obviously represented as King K. Rool, who uses his dark red color scheme to simulate his coat. In this stamina battle, his "Blunderbuss" special move — already a reference to Kaptain K. Rool — is more powerful, he turns invisible after a while (much like he does in the source game), and he is fought on Battleship Halberd, which represents the Flying Krock.
  • Baron K. Roolenstein can be summoned with the cores of Dr. Crygor (a fellow scientist), Kritter (a fellow Kremling), and The Creature & Flea Man (The Creature sharing Baron K.'s stitched-up appearance).
  • Klaptrap is represented as a small blue King K. Rool in Kongo Jungle. As the fight progresses, multiple Klaptrap Assist Trophies come into the battle to attack the player.
  • Squawks is represented by the Duck Hunt Duo set in the Great Cave Offensive, the closest thing to a cave in the game. The stage will also be covered in fog at some point to reference his flashlight (which you needed to use) in his intro game.
  • Cranky gets to enjoy a white Donkey Kong body while music from the original Donkey Kong plays, referencing his backstory as the original DK who kidnapped Pauline and fought with Mario all these decades ago and coincidentally resembles the "Grandpa Kong" seen in Rare's original "Donkey Kong and the Golden Bananas" pitch book. Though he still dozes off due to his age, which causes the floor to make you fall asleep if you stay on it for too long. The Sleep Floor could also refer to Donkey falling asleep while Cranky rants at him.
  • Enguarde is a blue Corrin who prefers to use his Dash Attack, being the closest to an attack a swordfish like him can do. You also drown near-instantly in the fight; as a fish, he swims far better than you could ever hope to.
  • Funky Kong is a battle against Captain Falcon on a battlefield filled with Bullet Bills serving as Jumbo Barrel planes for him and the Donkey and Diddy fighters assisting him. When he's unlocked as one of the shops, he'll mainly sell vehicle-related Spirits.
  • Professor Chops is represented by a stronger Donkey Kong in his white colors, referencing the Super Kong feature in both games.
  • Rambi is a white Donkey Kong who has a damaging dash, since whenever he is playable, he always charges through the stage and barrels through enemies, being a strong rhinoceros. When equipped by the player, his trait is to improve your speed.
  • Expresso is a Falco with increased speed and slow falling on a slippery stage. This sums up Expresso perfectly, as he is fast, but hard to stop (and, y'know, a bird).
  • Winky is a green Greninja, as both are frogs, and he only attacks by jumping and falling on you, much like in his home game.
  • Ellie is a team of Squirtle who attack with water, similarly to how she gathers water in her trunk to attack enemies. Ellie is also fought in Jungle Japes, a stage reminiscent of Lakeside Limbo from her debut game, where you encounter her for the first time, due to its wooden structures over a river.
  • Dixie Kong is summoned by the cores of Tiny Kong (her sister) and Candy Kong. On the spirit board, she is represented by Isabelle, having a similar ponytail, and Diddy Kong (her boyfriend) in his Dixie Kong color palette. When enhanced, she becomes Dixie and Kiddy Kong, the playable characters from Kiddy's debut. This also increases the power of thrown items, one of the main means of attack in the DKC games.

Donkey Kong 64

  • Tiny Kong is a Diddy Kong that occasionally turns tiny, with strong winds and low gravity. The winds and gravity reference her status as the best platformer of the Kongs, and turning tiny is what Tiny Kong is known for.
  • Chunky Kong is DK with increased power with his punches and kicks, which reference Chunky's significant strength.

    Dragon Quest Spirits

The series in general

  • Slime is represented by a group of blue Kirbys, who emphasize neutral air attacks as the attack that involves the least amount of limb. Most of them are small, but the last one is a lot bigger to represent the King Slime, which is what the Slime can become if enough are present (and if the basic Slime spirit is enhanced).
  • Liquid Metal Slime is represented by a blue Kirby who has been turned metallic and given high speed, defense, super armor that prevents flinching, evasive AI, a Franklin Badge to reflect all projectiles, low HP, and a short time limit. All of this works to capture its role as the original difficult-to-injure Metal Slime that would frequently escape battle before being defeated.
  • The Golem is represented by a giant yellow R.O.B. that has increased punch and kick power with super armor. Most of these traits help represent the raw power and fighting style that the Golem has, and it also randomly goes to sleep as a callback to the original Dragon Warrior.
  • Dracky is represented by a black Meta Knight due to his bat-like appearance and comes along with a red and green Meta Knight as well to represent other members of Dracky's family. You get occasional reduced defenses since the Dracky is known for casting the Sap spell, which reduces defense.
  • The Great Sabrecub is represented by a Pichu that likes to run away and shield a lot, and has a giant Pikachu (a Great Sabrecat, which this spirit can be enhanced into) protect it with dash attacks. Soccer balls also appear on the stage since they commonly are treated like pets (most notably Saber in Dragon Quest V).

Dragon Quest XI

  • Cetacea is a giant K. Rool that only does short-hops and neutral air attacks, with the Hero protecting him, since Cetacea defends herself rarely. The stage is also Yggdrasil's Altar, which also has Cetacea appear herself.
  • Hero's Comrades is a series of seven opponents who serve as representations of the seven other party members who accompany the Luminary, fought in the order in which they are recruited. In order of appearance, they are as follows.
    • Erik is Link in his Hero of the Wild costume, which has a similar style and color to Erik's own default costume. He likes to use Smash attacks with his sword and Side Specials with his Boomerang, as two of the three weapons Erik could use were one-handed swords and boomerangs.
    • Veronica and Serena are a small red Robin and a green Zelda, respectively. Being the first mages that the Luminary has in his team, they primarily use their Specials. The Robin has a particular preference for Arcfire since Veronica starts with Frizz magic, and the Zelda uses the Attack Reflector Nayru's Love and heals herself when at high damage, since Serena is primarily a supporter and healer. Veronica also has lower HP than Serena, since the latter outlives the former after the Time Skip.
    • Next is Sylvando, who is played by a red Sheik with a Beam Sword and a love for Needle Storm. Sheik is a girl dressed as a man, while Sylvando is infamously effeminate, flirtatious, and campy. The Beam Sword references Sylvando's initial preference for one-handed swords, and Needle Storm stands in for his potential to wield knives.
    • Being recruited at the same time, Jade and Rab fight you as a pair. Jade is played by Zero Suit Samus, another Ms. Fanservice Kick Chick with a ponytail, while Rab is King Dedede, both of whom are royalty of some sort who wear robes and a hat. The Zero Suit Samus almost exclusively uses her kicking moves, and the Dedede comes with a Staff, referencing Rab's usage of heavy magic wands as his primary weapons.
    • Finally is Hendrick, played by Ike in his Black Knight garb, since Hendrick wore similar black armor when he first appears as an antagonist. Additionally, both could wield two-handed swords and axes in their home games, and both are Mighty Glaciers.
  • Tockles is represented by a group of colorful Mr. Game & Watches who wield different items that turn invisible briefly during the battle, a reference towards them initially only being seen by the Luminary.

    Duck Hunt Spirits
  • The Wild Gunman naturally has your opponent be Duck Hunt constantly using his down-B special. What completes the motif, though, is that you're both set at 300% damage as well as guns constantly spawning on the stage, allowing you to try and replicate the "Showdown at High Noon" aspect of the original game if you so choose.
  • The Gangster, Lady, and Policeman are represented by Wolf (the Gangster), Peach (the Lady), and Ike (the Policeman). Wolf attempts to fight you, while Peach and Ike spam their counters, since you're not supposed to attack the Lady and Policeman. The battle is set on Battlefield-form Tomodachi Life, referencing the urban setting of Hogan's Alley.

    EarthBound/Mother Spirits
MOTHER/EarthBound Beginnings
  • Ninten is four Nesses whose PSI attacks are boosted, and whose Final Smashes build up quickly. Since Ness is Ninten's successor, it would make sense that he would possess him, and the battle is set in Magicant, which is the main hub for the game.
  • Lloyd is represented by Villager (who will rely on Lloid), and assisted by a red R.O.B. This references EVE, an extremely powerful red robot that acts as a Guest-Star Party Member for most of the final area of MOTHER/EarthBound Beginnings, Mt. Itoi. Explosives appear commonly in this battle, as Lloyd doesn't have PSI and relies on weapons, firearms, and explosives.
  • As for EVE herself, she's represented by a Giant Red R.O.B. at Frigate Orpheon, the Parasite Queen's glass prison mirroring Giegue's capsule.
  • Ana's battle takes place in Magicant with Ness standing in as Ninten, fitting as he's a Ninten Expy. Ana herself is the pink version of the Villager. The battle is a Stamina battle, as all battles in the Mother series are.
  • Teddy is a Little Mac that comes equipped with a Killing Edge. Both characters have a similar muscle build, and the Killing Edge is a nod to the fact that he is the only party member to use a proper weapon in his home game.

EarthBound (1994)

  • Buzz Buzz is represented as a very tiny Mr. Game and Watch with 300% damage, essentially letting you kill him with a single swat like Lardna Minch did. When you equip him, you end up starting with 30% damage, making you die more easily.
  • Ness's father is represented by an invisible Snake, referencing his status as The Voice.
  • Paula's spirit is a Villager with Ness accompanying her. Villager gets healed periodically, referencing Ness's Lifeup PSI and how Ness often has to heal Paula thanks to her low health. Ness even starts off with a Final Smash, which has her as part of it.
  • Jeff's spirit is against two teal Inklings who prefer using projectile items, while Jeff himself periodically shows up via Assist Trophy. Inklings mostly use firearms, much like Jeff, and the preference for these items is because of his tinkering knowledge. The ink-based weaponry of the Inklings also recalls Jeff's Slime Generator weapon. They are even using the one inkling skin that wears glasses, just like Jeff does.
  • Poo is a Ryu with powered up physical attacks and movement speed, referencing his status as the prince of his home, and physical strength in battle. The stage is also set in Skyworld to represent his home.
  • Flying Man's spirit is a stamina battle in Magicant against Ness and a Flying Man-styled Mii Brawler with 5 stocks. This is to replicate how Ness can team up with a Flying Man while in Magicant with the caveats of there only being five of them and all of them being capable of suffering permadeath.
  • Master Belch is a battle with Wario, while the floor is sticky and you get low defense. The sticky floor is a reference to the swamp that he was once fought in, and the defense lowering is a reference to one of his attacks.

Mother 3

  • Salsa the monkey is represented by Diddy Kong and is accompanied by Wario as a stand-in for the just-as-greedy Fassad. Banana peels also appear everywhere, a reference to Fassad's tendency to pull out a banana, eat it, and carelessly toss away the peel. The stage is Gerudo Valley, representing Death Desert, which Chapter 3 of Mother 3 began in.
  • Duster's spirit is in the form of a pink Luigi that prefers to kick (as Duster does) while the stage is covered in fog (a reference to the abandoned and ghost-infested Osohe Castle). Both characters also have pretty bad luck, including incidents where they briefly turned into completely different people (Duster via amnesia in chapter 4 of Mother 3, Luigi via brainwashing in Super Paper Mario). Duster mainly attacks enemies by kicking, so it makes sense that his spirit increases the user's foot attacks.
  • Kumatora's Spirit is represented by a Lucas in his Duster alt equipped with a Fire Flower while the floor is frozen on New Pork City Battlefield version. The Fire Flower and frozen floor represent her PK Fire and PK Freeze, the two PSI moves she starts with respectively. Kumatora is one of the two playable PSI users in Mother 3, so it makes sense that she increases the power of Ness and Lucas' PSI attacks.
  • Hinawa is represented by Zelda, and accompanied by two Lucases using both the regular and Claus palettes, with the fight being on Yoshi's Island and every fighter being easy to launch. The whole thing references the entirety of Chapter 6. On a more morbid note, the fact that it's Yoshi's Island that serves as the battlefield and that her spirit grants the user invincibility during a short period of time if they have suffered too much damage may be a subtle nod to Hinawa's death at the hands of the dinosaur-like Mecha Drago, which was a Heroic Sacrifice done in order to save Lucas and Claus.
  • Claus is Lucas in Claus's colors, but when you beat him, a Metal Lucas with a beam sword appears, representing the recurring antagonist, the Masked Man. This is because Claus was turned into Masked Man after being seemingly killed. On top of that, there's also the placement of Claus' spirit relative to the entire Adventure Mode. Just like how Masked Man was the last obstacle before pulling the final needle, so too is Claus the last obstacle before the final battle.
  • Masked Man's spirit is obtained by clearing Adventure Mode. If the player opts to go for the True Final Boss on their first playthrough, this means the player has had to defeat Claus, Masked Man's true identity. Furthermore, if one considers Porky to be the final challenge of MOTHER 3 and Masked Man to be the Post-Final Boss, it makes sense that Masked Man is found after a final challenge.
    • The Spirit Battle itself, if you challenge it on the spirit board after you get the spirit the first time, is represented by Lucas in the Masked Man Alt with increased power and a fast-charging Final Smash meter fought on New Pork City Omega. All of his attacks in Mother 3 are very powerful and hurt a lot in all of the fights with him alongside the background used for Lucas' Final Smash is the same as the one for the Masked Man and the Final Destination format of stages is used for most of the final battles in Smash, which Masked Man/Claus is in Mother 3.
  • Boney (who is a dog) is represented by Duck Hunt, with Lucas, his owner, assisting him in battle.
  • Much like Ness's dad, Lucas's father, Flint, is represented by Snake. He fights with one of his sons, Claus, and fights with a lava floor, likely as a call-back to how the first part of the chapter he's playable in takes place in a forest fire.
  • The Absolutely Safe Capsule's spirit must be summoned using the core of a Mr. Saturn spirit, and a whopping six shield-type cores. This is because the Absolutely Safe Capsule was developed by Dr. Andonuts and the Mr. Saturns, and it's the ultimate defense, keeping whatever is inside absolutely safe from whatever's outside. And it keeps whatever is outside absolutely safe from whatever's inside. Forever. It provides absolutely no offensive bonus whatsoever — even Joke Character spirits typically provide a slight boost — in exchange for the absolute maximum possible 10,000-point defense boost.
  • Summoning the Ultimate Chimera requires cores from Blargg (a dinosaur-like monster) and Pyoro (a bird), making Blargg the Ultimate Chimera and Pyoro the bird that stands atop of its head and has the duty of reactivating the Ultimate Chimera should the power-off button on its back be pressed. Equipping this spirit increases your chances of landing critical hits on other characters, which is similar to how merely coming into contact with the Ultimate Chimera results in an instant Game Over.

    F-Zero Spirits
  • Dr. Stewart, a surgeon, is represented by none other than Dr. Mario, who in this case is capable of replenishing his health over time. He's fought in Mute City SNES, which is both his home planet and references how he's been around since the original game.
  • Pico is a Bowser with an enhanced ray gun; Pico's special cutscene in GX showed that he was quite proficient with firearms, and his backstory in F-Zero X's manual is that he's a soldier and a hitman. Also, he's a turtle, and the song that plays is Death Wind, which is his home planet.
  • Jody Summer, a member of the Galactic Federation and known Expy of Samus Aran, is naturally represented by the bounty hunter in her red Zero Suit, who is also faster and lighter in order to reflect the White Cat's stats. She is accompanied by a white and pink Captain Falcon as well, with this particular color scheme being based on hers to begin with; his presence may reference chapter 5 of F-Zero GX's story mode, where he has to rescue Jody from an exploding power plant.
  • Mighty Gazelle is represented by a gray Mega Man (another robot) on the Mute City SNES stage with an electrified floor. His attacks are more powerful than normal, but he starts the fight at 30% damage, a reference to how his Red Gazelle sacrifices body strength for speed.
  • Mr. EAD is represented by a red biker Wario, as both characters were designed as caricatures of Mario. The blue R.O.B. that fights alongside him represents his vehicle, the Great Star, and how his android brother was recycled to make it.
  • Bio Rex, represented by a blue Wolf, has steaks appear in large numbers, what with him being a major carnivore who talks about wanting to obtain rare meat and all.
  • Blood Falcon is, of course, Captain Falcon using his color scheme, but the presence of two puppet fighters alludes to how there are multiple Blood Falcons, as hinted in an interview in F-Zero GX and shown in the anime.
  • Jack Levin's fight amusingly has you face a small army of Wii Fit Trainers alongside the stand-in for Jack (that being Ken, who is not very different personality-wise) to represent his rabid, angry fangirls due to his status as a pop idol.
  • Black Shadow is represented by a giant Ganondorf, presumably referencing the popular fan idea of having Black Shadow take Ganondorf's current Falcon-inspired moveset under the idea that it would fit him better due to actually being from the same series as Falcon. Protecting him is a Captain Falcon with Blood Falcon's colours, referencing how Black Shadow was the one who created him.
  • The Skull is a white Robin who focuses on using his down special, Nosferatu — referencing how he used dark magic, along with science, to bring himself back to life.

    Fatal Fury and SNK Spirits
General
  • With the exception of Haohmaru and Nakoruru, all spirits that originally debuted in a fighting game all have reduced jump power to reflect how SNK fighting games were done.

Fatal Fury

  • Andy Bogard is a Fox in a Stamina battle taking place in Delfino Plaza, which looks like his Italy stage in Fatal Fury 2. His spirit has the lightweight ability since Andy was trained in ninjitsu.
  • Joe Higashi is an Incineroar wielding an Ore Club in a Stamina battle, referencing Joe's tiger Animal Motif and the Ore Club reflects Joe's aerokinesis. The stage, Omega Kongo Falls, references the fact that he trains in the Thailand jungle.
  • Kim Kaphwan is a Ken in a white gi that has increased kicking power since Kim is a Taekwondo practitioner. He is accompanied by a giant King Dedede and a small Ridley, representing Chang Koehan and Choi Bounge respectively with the former being a large-bodied blunt weapon user and the latter as a small claw-using fighter.
  • Geese Howard is a Mii Brawler wearing a Zelda wig and a suit, reflecting his Art of Fighting 2 appearance. He is fought in a Stamina match in Omega Fourside as a reference to Geese Tower, and has increased throw power and counters a lot, since he's a practitioner of Aikijutsu and his counter move is memetic.

Art of Fighting

  • Ryo Sakazaki is a Mii Brawler, the fight is a Stamina battle taking place in Suzaku Castle since Ryo is the current heir to his family dojo — not to mention that Ryo himself has taken his fair share of inspiration from Ryu. The fact that the Mii Brawler can charge up his Final Smash meter quickly brings to mind his ability to gather ki from the earth and his Final Smash is a series of rapid punches, just like what Ryo can do.note

The King of Fighters

  • Kyo Kusanagi is a Captain Falcon with increased fire and explosion attacks as Kyo himself has the ability to infuse his punches with fire like the Captain himself in this game. He is accompanied by Donkey Kong and Pikachu, representing his original teammates in his debut game, Goro Daimon and Benimaru Nikaido respectively as a large grappler and agile lightning wielder.
  • Iori Yagami is Wolf as they fight using clawing effects. He is fought in a Stamina battle in the final part of the Reset Bomb Forest, resembling the corrupted appearance stages take on when fighting Orochi Iori/Leona in The King of Fighters '97. Once he is defeated, he returns with a noticeable increase in power, reflecting Iori's Riot of the Blood state.

Samurai Shodown

  • Both spirits have increased attack power when they are in high damage, since Samurai Shodown focus more on raw power than combos unlike a lot of other fighting games as well as the series' rage mechanic. Also, the only items available are swords.
  • Haohmaru is a Mii Swordfighter wearing a Takamaru costume taking place in Gerudo Valley. Like Haohmaru, the Swordfighter can use his neutral special to create a hurricane, and his tendency to use his side tilt attack references the series' noted hard slash attack.
  • Nakoruru is a Zelda accompanied by a tiny Falco, representing her hawk companion Mamahaha, with the battle taking place on Yoshi's Island.

Other SNK games

  • Athena Asamiya is a Palutena who favors special moves, with a green Richter arriving later, representing Sie Kensou. The stage used is Mushroomy Kingdom, resembling Psycho Soldier 's gameplay. As Sakurai himself points out, Athena and Palutena are both based on the same mythological figure as a base and both Kid Icarus and Psycho Soldier have a lot of similarities.
  • Ralf & Clark are a red and a blue Snake with Super Scopes that also have increased shooting power and favor their side special. The battle takes place in Gaur Plain, fitting since the Ikari Warriors games are very Rambo-like. All the items during the battle are explosives.

    Final Fantasy Spirits
General
  • Chocobo and Moogle features a Mii wearing said hat as the Chocobo if downloaded (otherwise he's wearing Isaac's wig to simulate the Chocobo's feathers), and a grey Kirby as the similarly round and adorable Moogle. The battle has no special conditions, as the duo are among the first and simplest summons you get in Final Fantasy VII. The stage, Garden of Hope, does bring to mind the forest areas where Chocobos and Moogles like to live in, as shown in things such as the Mog House minigame at the Gold Saucer. The Kirby is equipped with a Bob-omb; the Choco/Mog summon in Final Fantasy VII has the duo inexplicably cause an explosion when they run into the target.
  • Ifrit, the famous Fire-element summon, is represented by Bowser, another horned being who is known for his fire on the lava filled Norfair. In fact, the floor is lava and Bowser periodically has increased speed and attack power.
  • Shiva, the famous Ice-element summon, is played by the similarly slender and beautiful Zero Suit Samus in a dark blue costume, on the snowscape Summit stage. Naturally, Freezies spawn often during the fight. Krystal spawns in as a hostile assist trophy; her ice attacks references Shiva's Diamond Dust attack.
  • Bahamut ZERO is a giant Meta Ridley who can perform his Final Smash when at high damage. Ridley's Final Smash is very similar to Bahamut ZERO's Tera Flare. Bahamut's flare breath is described as being based on nuclear fusion, which means it is plasma; Ridley's breath is also described as plasma, and his Final Smash is named "Plasma Scream". As Bahamut ZERO is the strongest of the three Bahamut you can get in the game, it is only natural that his spirit grants your Final Smashes more power.

Final Fantasy VII

  • Tifa is played by a Mii Brawler in her costume, naturally, if downloaded or a Protective Gear otherwise. She has increased attack power and move speed after a little while, reflecting the effect of her Infinity +1 Sword, the Premium Heart gauntlets, which increases her stats proportionally to the amount of Limit Break energy she accumulates during a battle. She is fought on Omega Reset Bomb Forest; the background may reference Mount Nibel, near her home town.
  • Barret is a Mii Gunner in his costume if downloaded or a Wild West outfit otherwise, with the fight taking place in Midgar. Backing him up are several other Miis that stand in for the other founding members of AVALANCHE: Jesse, Biggs, and Wedge. Bomb-type items spawn continuously, reflecting the bombing mission from the start of Final Fantasy VII. Jesse even carries a Bob-omb to start, as she created the bomb used in the mission.
  • Aerith is a Zelda or, if her costume is downloaded, a Mii Swordfighter in said costume. The stage is the Fountain of Dreams, reflecting the flooded City of the Ancients where she dies at Sephiroth's hands. Cloud is there to protect her from you, and they're both healed after a little while, befitting Aerith's prowess as a White Mage. The Aerith fighter favors side specials. As Zelda, this is Din's Fire, which is similar to Fire magic. As for why Zelda is the normal stand-in? She's stood in for Aerith several times already!
  • Duck Hunt plays the dog-like Red XIII, and has Uncontrollable Speed, reduced weight, and a dashing tackle effect, fitting for Red XIII's Fragile Speedster stats. The dashing tackle effect may also reference his Sled Fang attack specifically. The battle takes place in Gerudo Valley, which features a canyon below the bridge in the middle, standing in for his home of Cosmo Canyon.
  • Cait Sith is a Koopaling Roy who is accompanied by 3 Mr. Game and Watches who love to use Judgement on the player as Cait Sith was the gambler of the party. Roy represents the cat, and Roy's white-colored Clown Car represents the mechanical moogle doll Cait Sith rides.
    • The music that plays, PictoChat is a jazzy upbeat tune much like Cait Sith's leitmotif. The song also features many references to the Nintendo DS/Wii menus. Much like the Gold Saucer, they act as a hub to a variety of games.
  • Cid is Link, a fellow user of many different gadgets. He has increased jump power as Cid was the Dragoon archetype in his game. He favors using Link's down-thrust, which is similar to a Dragoon's Jump attack. Jeff spawns in after a while and will shoot rockets at you. This references Cid's background in rocketry. The battle takes place in the Halberd, an airship/space ship.
  • Vincent is Wolf. He favors using Wolf's Blaster to attack, as his weapon type is guns. Once he receives enough damage, he grows giant and has increased defense; this references his Limit Breaks, which cause him to transform into a large monster. Wolf most resembles his Gallian Beast form, with a purple body and long claws. The battle takes place in Luigi's Mansion, a stand in for the abandoned mansion where you can recruit him.
  • Yuffie is fellow ninja Sheik who is distracted by items, a reference to her notorious obsession with Materia. All the items that spawn during her battle are spheres (Black Holes, X Bombs, Smoke Balls, etc), all of which look a bit like Materia. Gaur Plain, where the battle takes place, could be in reference to where she can be recruited after encountering her in the overworld. The use of "Cosmo Canyon" during her fight is in reference to how she and Red XIII take a part in each other's installments of On the Way to a Smile.
  • Rufus Shinra and the Turks are played by a white-coated Robin and several tuxedo-clad Miis, respectively. The Robin starts with a Steel Diver, like how Rufus wields a shotgun, and the battle takes place on Fourside, representing the Shinra Tower that lies above Midgar. Bomb-type items spawn repeatedly, referencing their sabotage of the Sector Seven Plate.

    Fire Emblem Spirits
Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light
  • The battle against Nyna puts you against Palutena and Ganondorf, who are constantly regenerating damage. This references Nyna's Bishop class, and Ganondorf's inclusion references Dark Emperor Hardin, who is her husband.
  • Barst & Bord & Cord are represented by a trio of Simons who prefer to throw their axes, referencing all of them being axe users. They also have the ability to repair broken bridges in World of Light, a nod to how all of them are or become woodcutters.
  • Camus is a fight against Marth in his black colors, which were always meant to resemble Camus. Marth has the ability to land critical hits, referencing Camus's high critical rate due to his Gradivus lance, and heals himself when at high damage, reflecting how he survived his "death" in Shadow Dragon and went on to appear in Gaiden and Mystery of the Emblem. His enhanced form is Sirius, his masked alter ego from Mystery of the Emblem.
  • The Whitewings, here called the Pegasus Sisters, are a trio of Lucinas with colors that represent each; red for Est, purple for Catria (who still has blue hair), and green for Palla. They are fought in Skyworld, being flying units in their games. Their fighting style favors aerial attacks, and will occasionally deal critical hits to simulate their Triangle Attack. They can also be summoned with the use of cores of their leader and fellow flying unit Minerva and the Able Sisters (also a trio of sisters).
  • Minerva, a red Lucina, is also fought in Skyworld to represent being a flying unit, with a green Charizard as a stand-in for her wyvern.
  • Caeda is represented by Lucina, her distant descendant, while being accompanied by her husband Marth. Strong Winds are in effect, fitting for a flying Pegasus Knight. Her spirit also allows the user to perform higher jumps, which is the closest thing Super Smash Bros has to flying on a pegasus.
  • Tiki is tag team battle against Marth (one of Tiki's best friends, wearing his darker blue Mystery of the Emblem color) and the Assist Trophy of Tiki herself. The fight takes place on Spear Pillar, meant to resemble the Ice Dragon Temple where Tiki was sealed away, as well as the Fane of Raman where Tiki rampaged while she was Brainwashed and Crazy by Gharnef. Tiki is also an enhanceable Spirit that goes from her young Shadow Dragon self to her adult Awakening self, earning the epithet "Naga's Voice", the same title her adult self was given in Heroes. Her Fire/Explosion Resistance trait notably coincides with her ability to slay dragons with her Divinestone (in Shadow Dragon and Mystery of the Emblem) and Wyrmslayer skill (in Awakening); most of the "dragon" fighters (and even bosses like Rathalos) in Smash have some sort of Fire attack in their moveset, especially those of the Breath Weapon variety. Her trait essentially lets you fight these dragon characters with an advantage, namely resisting their fire breath.
  • Linde is a female Robin, a fellow magic user, with an electrified floor, to represent her Aura tome being a light spell.
  • Jagen is represented by a Ganondorf who starts out with 60% damagenote , but has increased attack and defense power to make up for it, as he's a member of the Paladin Prestige Class. His fight in the throne room references his saving of Marth in the DS version of Shadow Dragon.
  • Medeus uses a purple Ridley that turns Giant after a while, which somewhat resembles his Shadow Dragon form in Mystery of the Emblem and its remake.
  • Gharnef is a Robin who spams Nosferatu, a dark magic spell that fittingly coincides with Gharnef's mastery of darkness magic, such as with his signature Imhullu spell. Of particular note is the stage, the Unova Pokémon League, that resembles the Dragon's Table where he wishes to revive Medeus, and the Slumber Floor, which references how he brainwashed Tiki while she was sleeping, inflicting her with an endless nightmare that made her become violent towards anyone who entered the Fane of Raman where she was stationed.
  • Draug is a blue King K. Rool with super armor and increased defense, but moves very slowly, as is expected for characters of his archetype. In addition, equipping his spirit also makes the player move slower, as if they were wearing heavy armor.

Gaiden/Shadows of Valentia

  • Young Alm and Celica are a male and female Villager, respectively. They avoid fighting because they haven't learned how to fight yet. They're also an enhanceable Spirit who turn into their adult selves, who are capable of fighting and become Back-to-Back Badasses, giving you a Back Shield as a result.

Genealogy of the Holy War & Thracia 776

  • Seliph is Marth who is accompanied by Ike. Both are using matching alts, making it clear that Ike is meant to represent his father Sigurd. The fight occurs on Castle Siege, standing in for Chalphy Castle, and "Edge of Adversity" plays, referencing Seliph's fight against Arvis.
  • The fight against Sigurd is against a white Ike with increased defense at high damage, referencing how his legendary sword, Tyrfing, increases his defense against magic drastically, and grants him the Miracle skill, which increases his evasiveness at high damage. He's fought at Arena Ferox, standing in for the castle arenas of Genealogy of the Holy War. "Edge of Adversity" plays, a nod to his last stand at the Battle of Belhalla.
  • Julius is Robin in a stamina fight with the floor being lava. Given both of them have the blood of a dark god in them, it seems like the best fit for Julius, and the lava floor is a reference to his Fjalar blood inherited from his father Arvis, who has an affinity for fire magic with his Valflame tome. He's fought on the Battlefield version of Castle Siege, representing Belhalla Castle.
  • Deirdre is Palutena, and your attack power is reduced during the fight. Both characters are related to gods, with Palutena being a goddess herself and Deirdre having the blood of the Divine Dragon Naga, and the attack reduction is a reference to the Silence Staff that she comes with. She's fought at Temple as a stand in for Belhalla Castle, and "Edge of Adversity" plays; the Battle of Belhalla would be the last time she would ever see Sigurd alive.
  • Leif is represented by Roy (which is odd, considering Marth is the one who has an alt based off of Leif), and his attacks have a chance of landing a critical hit, referencing the Critical skill he possesses in Genealogy. He also heals over time during battle, referencing the Light Brand's ability to heal its user in his game.

The Binding Blade & The Blazing Blade

  • Lilina is a battle against Palutena that constantly spams Explosive Flame, referencing the tome Elfire and Lilina's common association with fire magic. After a short while, Roy will come in to assist her, referencing their close friendship (and possible marriage if they reach A-support) in The Binding Blade. They are fought in Gaur Plains (Battlefield), representing the outskirts of Pherae where she is introduced, and "Beyond the Skies - Roy's Departure" plays as it does in Chapter 8, where Lilina is recruited. She also increases your fire attacks when equipping her spirit, which is yet another reference to her magic.
  • Ninian is a battle against Palutena, another long haired female dressed in an elegant gown. Palutena's divinity is also related, as dragons are commonly seen as a divine-like entity across the series, and Ninian herself is half-Ice Dragon. She is joined by Roy in his cyan colors, as her relationship with Eliwood (whom the costume is based on) is a vital piece to the plot of The Blazing Blade, on top of Ninian being the Developers' Desired Date for Eliwood. Palutena's Final Smash meter charges quickly and she can use her Final Smash twice in a row, as a nod to Ninian's Dance ability granting her easy experience points and giving her allies an Extra Turn.
  • Nino is represented by a female Robin whose magic attacks are powered up, no doubt a nod to Nino's prowess as a mage. The female Robin prefers to use Elwind, referencing Nino's classification as a Wind Mage in Fire Emblem Heroes.
  • Eliwood is, of course, represented by none other than his own son Roy, on the Battlefield form of Castle Siege (standing in for Pherae Castle) covered in lava, referencing the fire motif of his signature weapon, Durandal.
  • Lyn is represented by Zero Suit Samus (who has a pony tail and speed just like Lyn) with a Killing Edge, representing her Sol Katti, set in the Gaur Plains, akin to her homeland of the Sacae plains, with her Assist Trophy appearing. She's also an enhanceable spirit that turns into her appearance as an Einherjar in Awakening's DLC, here referred to as her exclusive Blade Lord promotion class, gaining the Critical Hit trait to reflect her high Skill and Critical rates.
  • Hector is summonable using the core of his daughter Lilina. Hector's battle is a fight against Simon, who has an Axe as a weapon just like Hector, with extremely high HP and super armor that befits an armored lord like Hector. It should be noted that the puppet Simon likes to use his regular chain whip attacks just as much as his Axe, which reflects how the animations of Generals in the GBA Fire Emblem games (which Hector is classed as in The Binding Blade) have their axe and lance weapons attached to chains.
  • Karel is represented by Chrom, a fellow swordfighter who prefers to fight first, but share a close relationship with his sister (Karla and both Lissa and Emmeryn, respectively). He has increased attack power, referencing the Wo Dao's high Critical Hit rate; at high damage, his attack power increases further, a nod to him being of the Swordmaster class.

The Sacred Stones

  • Lyon is represented by Robin, being the magic using representative of Ultimate. Furthermore, upon defeating Robin, Ridley appears to represent Fomortiis, which works with Fomortiis being both The Man Behind the Man and the Final Boss.
  • Eirika is a Lucina in red with increased attack, move and jump stats, referencing how The Sacred Stones is considered to be among the easiest of the Fire Emblem games, along with Eirika herself being commonly described as a nimble Fragile Speedster. She's also paired with an Ike dressed in white, who is most likely meant to be Ephraim, as the two have the same English voice actor.
  • L'Arachel is Robin, another mage, who heals herself when at high damage, since she's a White Mage and all. She is accompanied by Wario and Sheik, representing her companions Dozla (a short, stout man with a mustache and more muscles than brains) and Rennac (a speedy and cool-headed thief), respectively.

Path of Radiance & Radiant Dawn

  • Titania is a red-and-white Lucina who has increased stats while the player's own is decreased; fitting, as Titania is the Crutch Character archetype of the Tellius games.
  • Mist is a Zelda who gets increased defense and recovers health if not defeated quickly enough, as she is a White Mage. She is joined by her brother Ike in his yellow costume, based on their father Greil.
  • Soren, being a mage, gets represented by a green Robin who favors his special moves, and his magic attacks are stronger than normal. Ike assists him, as they share a very close relationship. When equipped, the Spirit raises magic and PSI attacks, further alluding to Soren's mastery of magic.
  • Elincia is fellow green haired magic user Palutena, who has increased movement speed, and she gets healed and a power boost when sufficiently damaged, as a nod to her being a pegasus unit and her ability to use staves. Further referencing her status as a pegasus unit is the Skyword stage.
  • Ashnard is represented by the similarly tyrannical king Ganondorf, and his black dragon Rajaion is represented by a purple Charizard.
  • Micaiah has to be summoned using the cores of Sothe, the person most dear to her, and Pitch, a small bird just like Yune.
  • Sothe himself is a green Sheik that prefers using dash attacks, which is a fitting fighting style for a thief like Sothe.
  • Zelgius (a.k.a. the Black Knight, whose Spirit he assumes once enhanced) is represented by a Mii Swordfighter wearing Zelgius' Black Knight outfit with Super Armor and improved smash attacks. The Mii Swordfighter likes to use Gale Strike, much like how the Alondite can create shockwaves to strike foes further away.

Awakening

  • Owain's cockiness and theatrical tendencies come forth in a battle against Chrom who won't stop taunting, Killing Edge in hand. The fact that Chrom is Owain's uncle makes it more fitting. When equipped, he gives you a boost to your electric attacks, since his alter ego, Odin, starts with a Thunder tome in Fates, and is classed as a Thunder mage in Heroes.
  • Lissa is an Isabelle with Chrom and Robin accompanying her, referencing the start of Awakening. They all regenerate health as a nod to her role as a cleric.
  • Lon'qu is a Chrom who wields a Killing Edge that also has increased power to sword attacks, referencing his status as a Master Swordsman. He's fought at Arena Ferox, as he is under the employ of Basilio, West-Khan of Regna Ferox, and he is recruited after the match held there. His Spirit also gives an equipped Killing Edge, as it's his weapon.
  • Tharja is Lucina using her specific Palette Swap while the stage is poisoned and she has increased power to her specials, representing Tharja's mastery of dark magic and preference for sickness-inducing hexes.
  • Walhart is a stamina battle with a red Ganondorf with super armor, which fits nicely with Walhart's image as a mighty conqueror who values strength. The super armor is also a reference to his personal skill, Conquest, which protects him from armor- and beast-slaying weapons that he would otherwise be susceptible to.
  • Anna is represented by a red Lucina who attracts items to her, since Anna is a merchant and all. As her first playable appearance in Awakening made her part of the sword-wielding Trickster class, only the Beam Sword and Killing Edge appear as items here. Anna also runs a shop that specializes in equipment, alluding to her role as a merchant in most Fire Emblem games. Her fight in a throne room references a predecessor from Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, where a secret shop is hidden the the Altean Throne Room.
  • Severa is Lucina using her mother Cordelia's Palette Swap (which has been revamped to also be close to Severa herself) who has the ability to gain random critical hits, referencing her Mercenary class. Severa herself is key to summoning Cordelia, as befitting of their mother-and-daughter relationship.
  • The savage, long-nailed Gangrel, who sees people as merely beasts, is represented by a Wolf with raised attack power. Helping him out is Bayonetta, standing in for Aversa, another sexy lady with dark magic powers. You only need to defeat Wolf to win, since Aversa ditches Gangrel and goes on to serve Validar later in the story. The battle is at the wastelands-like Find Mii, standing in for the Border Wastes, where Chrom defeats Gangrel in the story. When equipped, Gangrel gives you a boost to your electric attacks, reflecting his weapon, the electrical Levin Sword.

Fates

  • The battle against Sakura is represented by Isabelle and a female Corrin who periodically regenerate health, a reference to Sakura's status as a White Mage.
  • Elise, being Sakura's Nohrian counterpart, is also represented by Isabelle with regenerating health and is distracted by items, a possible nod to her childlike innocence.
  • Takumi is represented by two Pits, who only use arrows to reference him being an archer; they also both wield Energy Bows. In addition, the heavy winds blowing during his fight is a reference to the fact that his Fujin Yumi can control the wind. There being two of him is also a nod to the final battle in Conquest. In World of Light, he shows up at Galeem's side, representing how Anankos turned Takumi into a Fallen Hero and possessed him on the Conquest route, in contrast with Garon.
  • Camilla is a black Female Corrin in a poisonous fog accompanied by a Charizard that represents her Wyvern, with the fog referencing her wyvern's dark and poisoned breath. Being in Corrin is also likely a nod to her attachment to them. The only items are X Bombs, which unleash an explosive blast in a cross shape. This references an ability Camilla has in Birthright in which she can send blasts of flame down corridors when fought as a boss toward the end of the game.
  • Ryoma is a red Chrom, in what could be a potential Casting Gagnote , with an electrified floor as a nod to the electric properties of his blade, the Raijinto.
  • Of course, Garon would be possessing the also tyrannical and conquering Ganondorf. The floor being poisoned is a nod to his true nature as a slime possessing the corpse of the real Garon, and Final Destination stands in for the astral void that the final battle against Anankos in Revelation takes place in. Ganondorf's Final Smash could also represent Garon's dragon form from Birthright. Additionally, in World of Light, he appears in Dharkon's side, across from Takumi, as Garon (or rather, his artificial imposter) has been a puppet of Anankos for far longer.
  • Azura is represented by a female default Corrin in the Fountain of Dreams, a nod to her connection to water. The original Japanese version of "Lost in Thoughts All Alone" plays and she gains access to two Final Smashes at once, being both a nod to her Songstress class ability to give units an Extra Turn, as well as making it seem Corrin is in a battle being helped by her from a distance. What's more, in World of Light, she is the spirit that guards the captured Corrin.
  • Jakob is a Sheik with a stat boost in throwing weapons and mostly uses his knives, due to being a dagger unit himself.
  • Leo is represented as Robin, a fellow Fire Emblem tome wielder serving as The Strategist of his army, who regenerates health, has a Black Hole item, and a high gravity hazard effect, which references his Brynhildr tome and affinity for darkness.
  • Xander is, of course, summoned with the cores of his younger Nohrian siblings: Elise, Camilla, and Leo.
  • Like other flying units, Hinoka is a red Lucina and has high winds during her fight along with enhanced aerial abilities, and is fought at Suzaku Castle, what with Hoshido being very heavily based on Japan.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE

  • Tsubasa Oribe is represented by a purple female Inkling, as both are wearing school uniforms. The fight takes place in the Boxing Ring with the Callie and Marie assist trophy taking center stage to simulate TMS#FE's concert-style battle scenes and circles back around to how Tsubasa has a duo special move with Ellie that is a Shout-Out to the Squid Sisters in her home game. As an equippable Spirit, Tsubasa is one of the weakest spirits in the game because she's not a trained soldier like most other Fire Emblem spirits. This changes when she enhances and gets her Carnage Form, which gives her a massive power boost and the Jump Up ability, which she shares with Caeda (the Fire Emblem character her Mirage is based on).

Three Houses

  • Dorothea is represented by female Robin, a fellow Fire Emblem character who specializes in both magic and swords. The Robin has increased electric attack power, alluding to how Dorothea innately knows Thunder, can learn Thoron early in her Reason spell list, and is a good candidate for the Levin Sword due to her Sword proficiency and high Magic stat, all of which Robin has access to in Smash. She has backup in the form of Singing Jigglypuffs, as Dorothea was a star actor and songstress for the Mittelfrank Opera Company in Enbarr before she enrolled in the Officer's Academy.
  • Ingrid is played by fellow Tomboy Fire Emblem character Lucina in her Lissa costume, which gives her blonde hair to match Ingrid's. Food items spawn frequently, as Ingrid easily loses her usually cool composure when in the presence of good food. Her spirit grants the "Landing Lag Down" effect, a reference to her preferred class of Pegasus Knight.
  • Hilda's spirit battle is against a pink-haired Villager, assisted by a male Byleth wearing Claude's colors (and who only uses his Failnaught specials). Her stats are boosted when she takes lots of damage, befitting of Hilda's unwillingness to take things seriously unless it's a dire situation. In a similar manner, her spirit grants Critical-Health Attack Up. The background music for this battle is "Paths That Will Never Cross", as Hilda is always fought as an enemy on the Crimson Flower route and adamantly refuses to side with the Empire.
  • Seteth's timed spirit battle starts out with you fighting a green female Villager, representing Flayn. Once she's defeated, Seteth himself (represented by an aggressive Dr. Mario) shows up with enhanced stats for the first part of their battle, as Seteth is very protective of Flayn and will not hesitate to deal out harsh punishment to anyone who harms her. His spirit grants Air Attack Up, as Seteth favors the Wyvern Rider/Wyvern Lord class line, which also fights in the air. The music that plays during this battle is "Chasing Daybreak", which is the map music that plays when he joins you in battle in the first battle of the Silver Snow route in the second half of the game.
  • Rhea uses Palutena as her puppet fighter. Rhea and Palutena both have green hair and Gold and White Are Divine attire, as well as connections to gods, with Rhea being the archbishop of the Church of Seiros and the daughter of a dragon goddess, and Palutena being a Physical God herself. Once the Palutena is defeated, however, a Giant white Charizard takes her place, representing her true Scaled Up form as The Immaculate One. The Bridge of Eldin that the battle takes place on bears resemblance to both the sunrise battlefield that Saint Seiros and King Nemesis dueled each other on in the intro of Three Houses, as well as the sunset outskirts of Garreg Mach that the end of Part 1 of Three Houses takes place in, where Rhea transforms into The Immaculate One to fend off the invading Adrestian army. "The Apex of the World" plays during this battle, just like it does when she is battled as the Final Boss of the Crimson Flower route. Her Neutral typing, and thus grey color, reflects her story route, named Silver Snow.
  • The leaders of the titular Three Houses can all be enhanced into their post-Time Skip selves. Each of them are played by Byleth in their respective colors, spamming moves with their corresponding weapons (Aymr for Edelgard, Failnaught for Claude, and Areadbhar for Dimitri).
    • Edelgard's Attack typing comes from the fact that she becomes the instigator of the five-year war after she is crowned as Adrestia's Emperor, and the subsequently red coloring reflects her story route, named Crimson Flower. When enhanced, she gains the Armor Knight ability and has a great Defense stat, since her post-Time Skip self is an armored unit with high Strength and Defense but middling Movement and Speed. Furthermore, she only has one Support slot, since she insists on doing things alone of her own accord, only truly trusting certain individuals such as Hubert and Byleth. Her Spirit battle takes place on a Battlefield-shaped Castle Siege stage with lava floors, referencing her alter-ego as the Flame Emperor. "The Apex of the World" plays during the battle, as it does when you fight her as the Final Boss of the Azure Moon route. The lava floor and "Apex of the World" playing is also a reference to the Final Boss of her own route (Crimson Flower) where "Apex of the World" is also played, and the majority of the final map being a Battle Amongst the Flames.
    • Dimitri's Shield typing gives him a blue color, reflecting the name of his story route, Azure Moon. Once enhanced, he gains Hyper Smash Attacks and has Glass Cannon stats. In his home game, he has a ludicrous Strength stat, but he becomes a Death Seeker post-Time Skip who fights with relentless force and reckless abandon. His Shield typing beats out Edelgard's Attack typing, as Dimitri grows to hate Edelgard so much that he'll do anything to get revenge on her, and he has two Support slots since, despite being initially distant and rude when he's first reunited with his friends during the Azure Moon campaign, he will eventually undergo Character Development and learn to let go of his anger. He is fought alongside a blue-caped Ganondorf, representing his loyal retainer, Dedue. "Between Heaven and Earth" plays during the battle, as it does during the Battle of Gronder Field where he says his signature "Kill every last one of them!" line.
    • Claude's Grab typing gives him a green color, reflecting the name of his story route, Verdant Wind. Once enhanced, he gains Weapon Attack & Move Speed Up and evened out stats, reflecting his extremely high Dexterity, Movement, and Speed stats in his home game. He has three Support slots, since he tries to stay out of the war and is the least antagonistic of the three lords after the Time Skip, and thus the friendliest to Byleth during non-Crimson Flower campaigns. His battle is on Omega Gaur Plains, representing Gronder Field, the site of the Battle of the Eagle and Lion (which also has "Blue Skies and a Battle" as its background music). As he is known for his devious schemes, the floor is coated with poison, and your controls will occasionally be reversed. Both afflictions require two support slots to counter, but you can only have three slots at maximum, since Claude usually has a backup plan to use if his first one fails. The reversed controls might also be a reference to the image of Claude appearing upside-down on the official cover art. The floor being coated with poison is also a reference to how the map for the Final Boss of his route is a swamp filled with poisonous waters.
  • Sothis is a Legend-class Spirit represented by a female Byleth wearing her colors. She gets a Sudden Final Smash (which, of course, involves summoning Sothis herself) and will fully recover her health when she takes enough damage. Sothis's Divine Pulse allows Byleth to turn back time in order to undo mistakes or change the future, and the healing during the battle reflects this by essentially "turning back" your progress on damaging her. When equipped, Sothis will grant you this very same Critical Health Healing effect, essentially giving you the Divine Pulse for your own usage.

    Game & Watch Spirits
  • All of the Game & Watch Spirits have Mr. Game & Watch, who usually favors the move the Spirit is based on (throw move for Ball, up tilt for Flag, side special for Judge, side smash for Fire Attack, etc.) with some variations based on the game being represented.
  • Ball is accompanied by a trio of spherical fighters: Pac-Man, Jigglypuff, and Kirby. In addition, soccer balls and Poké Balls will spawn frequently.
  • Flag has a group in a timed battle, and all of the items that spawn are Special Flags.
  • Fire is a group whose Up Special has increased power. The battle is a timed battle, much like how you have a limited time to rescue the people who fall in the original game.
  • Manhole has items that will gravitate towards him, which will be nothing but Pitfalls, items that create a hole for the fighter to fall into.
  • Lion is accompanied by an Incineroar, the closest there is to having a lion in the game.
  • Turtle Bridge is joined by three turtle-like allies: Morton, Bowser, and Squirtle.
  • Oil Panic has you battle a group in a slippery stage, since oil is very slippery.
  • Chef can be summoned by Huey, who is a paint can who absorbs black paint, and another Chef, specifically the one from Personal Trainer: Cooking.
  • Naturally, Octopus can be summoned by using fellow Octopi Octoman and Octorok as well as Oil Panic. Its status as a Legend-class Spirit is likely due to it being Mr. Game and Watch's Final Smash, or possibly since it's one of the largest sprites in the series.

    Ice Climber Spirits
  • The Condor is a one-minute stamina match against a red Ridley and the Ice Climbers on a Battlefield version of the Summit. The Ridley will try to stay out of combat and move toward the top of the field whenever possible, so you have to try to catch him, as the Climbers do, before time runs out.
  • The Polar Bear is a duel with a big white Donkey Kong that jumps up and comes crashing back down to attack, just like it did back in the original game.
  • The Eggplant spirit provides the user with more stamina, since in the original game, it gave bonus points when collected, and is a healing item in the Summit stage.

    Kid Icarus Spirits
  • Pandora's fight pits you in a team with Dark Pit against Wendy while Bob-ombs rain in from above — a reference to the encounter with Pandora in Uprising that resulted in Dark Pit being created. She's also an enhanceable Spirit that becomes Amazon Pandora and grants an easier dodging effect, referencing her preference for constantly moving around and teleporting.
  • Viridi is a Mii Swordfighter in a Viridi costume set in the Reset Bomb Forest with a giant grey Kirby who spams his down special, Stone, as Cragalanche. The fight is on a time limit to represent when the Reset Bomb will hit the forest; if you run out of time, the timer will expire just as the Reset Bomb hits the ground to start the stage transition. In addition, her Spirit effect gives you extra damage against Metal characters, as a reference to how she's the goddess of nature and despises the works of humans (such as wrought metals); her Reset Bombs in particular are designed to destroy anything made by humans and spare natural structures. She's also using the 6th voice type for the Mii Fighters, as it's provided by her own Japanese voice actress.
  • There's an actual Chest Monster in the Temple of Light area, where opening a chest gets you into a fight with a Mimicutie spirit instead of loot. Said Mimicutie is played by Zero Suit Samus, because they are both known for kicking with their slender legs.
  • Being Palutena's soldiers, of course the Centurions would be represented by smaller Pits. To reference that they can fly (unlike him), they prefer to attack in midair.
  • Twinbellows is a giant Duck Hunt that has the ability to breathe fire, which accurately describes Twinbellows' nature as a fire-breathing giant dog (albeit with two heads). It can also be summoned with the spirits of Inuji Darumeshi, Rusty Slugger (who are both technically the same character in different versions), and Hothead.
  • Hewdraw is represented by three Ridleys that are purple, blue, and red respectively that favor using his neutral special, that being Plasma Breath, all referencing Hewdraw's status as a three-headed fire-breathing dragon. Summoning Hewdraw requires Arbok, Inspired, and Valoo; a different serpent for each head.
  • Pseudo-Palutena is represented by the goddess herself starting the battle alongside a Ditto, referencing her true appearance, almost like if she had a second stock to represent both of her original battle phases.
  • Medusa is a large Palutena as a reference to her battles in which she has always been terrifyingly massive, also having super armor to reference how she hardly flinches during them. She's also an enhanceable Spirit that goes from her appearance in the original Kid Icarus to her look in Uprising while also giving the ability to grow giant at the start of the match, once again tying into how she's always appeared as a giant.
  • Dyntos is represented by a grey King Dedede who's easily distracted by items, which references how Dyntos is a hammer-wielding blacksmith who cares more about making things than fighting.
  • Hades is a giant Ganondorf, another Nintendo villain, on Final Destination, which is the closest Smash can offer to look like the Underworld's void-like entranceway. To simulate his strength as a Physical God, he has various different types of attack buffs (including his size) that all stack on top of each other for one big boost in power. He can also be enhanced into the "devastation ensemble" form that he took for the final boss battle in his game.
  • The Three Sacred Treasures are represented by, who else, Pit with both increased special move power (for the Arrows of Light) and the ability to reflect projectiles (the Mirror Shield).
  • Phosphora is a summonable spirit that requires the cores of Rotom and Elec Man, two characters with electric powers just like her.
  • Magnus is represented by Ike, whose Ragnell sword looks a lot like Magnus' club, and both are exceptionally strong fighters. As the World's Strongest Man, Ike also gains super armor and stronger smash attacks, but moves more slowly.
  • Pit's original form from the original Kid Icarus can be summoned using the cores of two random Grab Types (which Original Pit is), as well as Centurion and Cupid, who are both angels like Pit (and the former of whom Pit commands).
  • The Reaper (a giant Ganondorf) and Reapette (a bunch of smaller Ganondorfs) are all equipped with Death's Scythes, and the larger one can cause damage by ramming into you. In the Kid Icarus games, the Reaper will freak out and ram into Pit if it sees him, summoning a bunch of smaller Reapettes.
  • The Specknose is a battle against multiple Warios. Wario's nose is cartoonishly big and pink, just like those of Specknoses, and the player has to fight several of them because in the original game, they appear in swarms to attack the player.
  • The Lurchthorn fight is against six Pac-Men, representing the various sections the enemy is made of, and Super Scopes spawn to represent its ability to shoot beams from its multiple segments. It is also set in Reset Bomb Forest, which is not only where the enemy is first encountered in Uprising, but where one actually appears as a stage hazard.

    Kingdom Hearts Spirits
  • All Kingdom Hearts spirits are Stamina battles except for Kairi, since she is the only Spirit to have not been a boss in her home series. This allows those playing as Sora for these battles to get the Hit Stop effect from the main series if dealing the final blow.
  • Kairi has you fighting Daisy, a redheaded princess (honorary in Kairi's case) who is also feminine while having a spunky attitude, on Tortimer Island as a stand in for Destiny Islands. The Daisy puppet fighter wields a Lip's Stick as a stand in for the Destiny's Embrace, Kairi's personal Keyblade. She fights alongside Sora, the most important person to her, though you only need to defeat Kairi to win. She is a support spirit, as she wasn't a fighter before gaining the Keyblade, and has Critical-Health Defense ↑ as her ability, which alludes to her Empty Shell state during the majority of the first game.
  • Ventus is Sora, as it's because of Ventus (albeit accidentally) that Sora was able to use a Keyblade. Accompanying him is Dark Samus as Vanitas, who was created by Xehanort extracting the darkness in Ventus' heart, much like how Dark Samus was created by Metroid Prime taking Samus' Phazon suit. Dark Samus also wields a Killing Edge, which alludes to Vanitas' Void Gear Keyblade. As the most agile of the Wayfinder Trio, his spirit grants increased speed. Lastly, he’s fought in Gerudo Valley, which resembles the rocky canyons of the Keyblade Graveyard.
  • Aqua is the default Lucina, another blue haired Lady of War swordfighter who led a daunting life (Aqua due to her being stuck in the Realm of Darkness for eleven years, Lucina due to Grima's destruction of the world in her Bad Future). The battle starts with four Mr. Game & Watch minions, representing the Heartless that Aqua has to fight during her imprisonment, with her appearing accompanied by the Krystal Assist Trophy since Aqua is the most skilled with magic out of the Wayfinder Trio; this is also shown in her spirit granting her increased magic attack strength. The Mr. Game & Watches like to dash, as dashing attacks are common among the Heartless. They are fought on Find Mii, standing in for the Realm of Darkness and the worlds sent there by the Heartless. Lastly, unlike the other members of the Wayfinder Trio who are Advanced spirits, she is an Ace class spirit as she is the only one of the three who became a Keyblade Master.
  • Terra is Chrom, a fellow physically oriented swordfighter wearing a single pauldron on his left shoulder, who is assisted by an Ashley Assist Trophy when low on health, the dark magic-using witch referencing how Terra was manipulated into using darkness by Master Xehanort and further tricked by Maleficent, known for boasting about having "all the powers of hell", a place Ashley has granted kids to. In addition, Ashley's hair turns white when using dark magic, alluding to Xehanort's possession of Terra's body at the climax of Birth by Sleep. His spirit grants increased attack, as he is the most powerful physically of the Wayfinder Trio.
  • Riku is the similarly white-haired Corrin who starts the battle with a Black Hole to represent Riku's darkness powers. As he is both fast and powerful, he has increased speed during the battle and his spirit grants increased sword power. The stage being Hollow Bastion references the battle between him and Sora there while he was possessed by Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, and the blue colors of Corrin's costume harkens to his signature Dark Mode.
  • Xion is a female Robin accompanied by two male Robins. The smaller male Robin represents Roxas, and the taller one represents Axel. Robin’s dark coat resembles the Organization’s black coats, and all 3 combatants are skilled with magic. The Robin representing Roxas wields a Killing Edge, alluding to his dual-wielding abilities, while the Robin representing Axel loves to spam Arcfire, alluding to his fire powers. The battle takes place in Delfino Plaza as a stand in for Twilight Town, the Shine Gate prominently in the background acting as the Clock Tower allegory, which is where you fought her in 358/2 Days. The choice of music track, "Shrouding Dark Cloud", plays during the first phase of her Climax Boss fight in Days.
  • Axel is fellow (literal) Fiery Redheadnote  Roy, wearing his black colors to reflect Axel’s Black Cloak. Since Axel is immune to Fire attacks during his boss fights (especially in Chain of Memories, where hitting him with Fire will heal him instead of hurting him), the Roy has a resistance to Fire and Explosion attacks. The battle takes place in Kalos Pokémon League, which starts in the blue central chamber before changing to the Blazing Chamber, as a stand in for the computer room that he sets on fire where he is fought in Kingdom Hearts II. He also begins the fight with a Hot Head, which similarly allows him to turn the floor into a fire hazard while referencing his chakram weapons. While the music track, "Destiny's Force", isn't normally associated with Axel, it appears as a boss theme in 358/2 Days, including the Mission Mode where Axel himself is Promoted to Playable.
  • Roxas, Sora's Nobody, is Sora himself in his Ultimate Form outfit (standing in for the similarly colored Final Form from Kingdom Hearts II, which can only be obtained after encountering Roxas in The World That Never Was) wielding a Killing Edge. He gets increased speed and power and periodically recovers his health since a duel-wielding Roxas is one of the most powerful characters that have ever been playable in a Kingdom Hearts game. The choice of a Killing Edge katana in particular may reference Roxas’s command of the Samurai Nobodies. The fight takes place in his version of Dive to the Heart, to represent his boss fight in Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, and "Fragments of Sorrow" plays during the fight, with it being the version from Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX that would play during his own Dive to the Heart sequence.

    Kirby Spirits
General
  • Waddle Dees are a team of four Kirbys who just walk back and forth and don't attack. The battle is fought on Dream Land (GB), their debut game.
  • The battle with Gordo has you fighting a bunch of invisible King Dededes who favor their (more powerful) side special, creating the illusion of a volley of Gordos coming out of nowhere.
  • Poppy Bros. Jr. is represented by Young Links who jump around a lot and favor their Down Specials, just like Poppy Bros. jumps around a lot and loves to throw bombs.
  • Whispy Woods has you fighting several red Kirbys on Melee's Green Greens (which has Whispy himself in the background) to represent Whispy's apples, with a heavy wind blowing everything to the side similar to the tree's own weaponized gusts of air.
  • Scarfy is a yellow Kirby at 300% damage, but soon after, 3 red Kirbys spawn, a reference to how it looks peaceful but can get really dangerous when provoked, which is shown when enhanced to its angry form.
  • Rocky is a Metal Kirby that favors the Stone down special. The metal is because his body is made out of rock, and Stone is the ability Rocky gives Kirby.
  • Waddle Doos are a team of red Kirbys holding Super Scopes, fought on Melee's Green Greens with an electrified floor, referencing the Beam ability that Waddle Doos normally give to Kirby.
  • In its home game, Bronto Burt attacks Kirby by flying into him. In its spirit battle, this is represented by several Pits who do nothing but flying and spamming their side special in the air, simulating a bunch of Brontos attacking you.
  • The Dragoon is represented by a red Kirby on Pilotwings with increased move speed and item gravitation, making it easier for him to grab the Dragoon pieces when they spawn. The spirit's Giant Killer skill may be a reference to Kirby using it to One-Hit Kill the Subspace Gunship in The Subspace Emissary.

Kirby's Dream Land trilogy

  • Chu Chu has you battle against Jigglypuff on the Battlefield form of Dreamland 64. However, the floor is sticky and limits movement, referencing Chu Chu's sticky abilities.
  • Dark Matter is represented as a two-phase stamina fight where you battle King Dedede (representing how often he gets possessed by him) before battling Meta Knight to represent Dark Matter Blade. It represents the final battle of 2 using a monochrome Dedede to represent his fight on the black and white Game Boy and uses the Halberd stage to represent most of that battle taking place in the sky. Occasionally, the Nightmare Assist Trophy plunges the battlefield into darkness. Finally, the fight uses the Zero-Two remix from Brawl for the music, as Zero-Two itself is the source and controller of all Dark Matter.
  • Kine is a Squirtle equipped with a Freezie and accompanied by a blue Kirby, on Wuhu Island, referring to him being a fish and the Ice ability.
  • Coo appears as a purple Falco with a partner Kirby on Dreamland where strong winds blow the stage, referring to his flight capabilities as an owl.
  • Pitch is a green Jigglypuff who jumps a lot, due to him being a flying bird. The only Poké Balls in the fight release Fletchling, small birds like him.
  • Gooey is a black Kirby who favors his neutral special, referencing the fact that Gooey is a Moveset Clone of Kirby in their home series, including the ability to use Kirby's copy abilities.
  • Bonkers is a purple Donkey Kong who starts the battle with a Hammer and can use it for much longer than normal.
  • Nago is represented by Isabelle, who gains Nago's ability to triple jump. The battlefield also spawns lots of soccer balls, as Nago always rolls Kirby around like a ball when they team up.
  • Rick is a Pikachu that starts with a Fire Flower and a Kirby ally with the floor being covered in ice. Kirby is there because him and Rick are partners, the Fire Flower is supposed to be Rick's fire ability, and Pikachu doesn't slip on the ice because Rick can walk normally on any terrain.

Kirby's Adventure

  • Nightmare is a giant dark blue Kirby to resemble his orb form in the Fountain of Dreams, the place where he was sealed, using a Star Rod. Nightmare himself periodically pops up as an Assist Trophy.
  • The Star Rod is represented by various yellow Kirbys, who, of course, wield the item in the Fountain of Dreams.
  • The Meta-Knights are a team of four Meta Knights (of course). The first one (possibly Axe Knight, the most common of the group) starts the battle with a Killing Edge. After taking some damage, he is joined by Meta Knights representing Javelin Knight, Mace Knight (who carries an Ore Club), and Trident Knight.

Kirby Super Star (Ultra)

  • TAC is a team of Villagers who deal damage by ramming into you, and the Great Cave Offensive stage they're fought in is from their debut game, Kirby Super Star. The battle is also timed, since you have to move quickly to recover your ability if TAC steals it before he disappears.
  • Masked Dedede is summoned with a Hammer Bro and the Reporter & Wrestler. The Hammer Bro reference is obvious because of Dedede's giant hammer, but the Reporter/Wrestle team is a double-reference: they both wear masks, and King Dedede's boss arena often resembles a wrestling ring.
  • It takes the cores of three other knights, those being Shovel Knight, the Meta-Knights, and Knight Man, to summon Galacta Knight. The need for the Meta-Knights in particular is a double reference because in Galacta Knight's boss fight in Kirby Super Star Ultra, he summons his own Meta-Knights from time to time.
  • To summon Dyna Blade, you need a a Super Star (as a pun on her origin game), Beat (a bird), a Cucco (another bird), and a shield-type core, possibly to represent her status as a Mama Bear.

Kirby & the Amazing Mirror

  • Moley is a giant Pikachu in the Great Cave Offensive, being a fellow rodent and the stage referencing him being a mole. And speaking of the latter, only Pitfalls appear as items and the opponent starts with a Drill.
  • Dark Mind is a Ganondorf with a permanent Franklin Badge to represent his mirror powers and occasionally gets curry with increased power since his core is a ball of fire. Zero-Two's theme also plays, since it is an alternate universe version of Zero.

Kirby's Epic Yarn

  • Prince Fluff is represented by Kirby himself in his light blue color, and tends to favor throws, which references the main form of attacking in his game. He's also fought on the Super Happy Tree stage from Yoshi's Story to represent Patch Land.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land

  • Magolor is fought on the Halberd (referencing the Lor Starcutter), and is represented by a blue Robin whose magic is powered up, referencing how Magolor is a wizard. Occasionally, the screen will flip, referencing Magolor's final form's attack where he flips the screen.
  • Landia is a Charizard in a stamina fight, but when you beat him, 4 Tiny Charizard show up, a reference to how Landia can be either 1 big dragon or 4 small dragons.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse

  • Elline is a tiny Palutena on the Rainbow Cruise. Lots of ball weapons spawn here, because Kirby was (once again) in Ball form throughout most of Rainbow Curse.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe

  • Summoning Queen Sectonia requires a Zinger (since she looks like a bee) and Princess Shroob (because she's a tyrannical ruler).

Kirby: Planet Robobot

  • Susie's Spirit has her (Isabelle's pink colors) fighting alongside a Metal Meta Knight, who represents Mecha Knight, the mechanized version of Meta Knight that Susie herself created. Possessing Isabelle also makes sense since both characters are secretaries. She can even hack doors due to her technical knowledge. The fight itself takes place on the Halberd, which is likely a reference to Kirby using the Robobot Armor to scan the Halberd and using the new form to chase after Star Dream.
  • The Robobot Armor is a bunch of Kirbies on the Halberd with the only items spawning being drills, referencing the screwdriver heads on its shoulders which are used to interact with certain parts of the environment, how the armor scanned the Halberd, and its final attack against Star Dream being a giant drill. The music playing during the stage is also the theme that plays whenever the armor is put on in Patched Plains Stage 2.

Kirby Star Allies

  • The Three Mage-Sisters are a red, blue, and yellow female Robin that have an increase in their magic power and favor specials. And in a similar way to the Paz spirit below, their spirit ability Crosses the Line Twice as they give you a bonus with battering items, recalling how Lord Hyness uses them in his boss battle.note

    The Legend of Zelda Spirits
General
  • Octorok is a fight with four green Diddy Kongs that love to spam their neutral special in the same way Octoroks spit their rocks. Despite the artwork using the Skyward Sword design, they're fought on the Great Bay stage as Octoroks have been more known for dwelling in bodies of water in the 3D titles.
  • Moblin consists of four white King Dededes that favors down specials and have reduced movement speed. Moblins are known for being stronger enemies that consistently wield heavy weapons, and are typically not very fast. Coincidentally, Dedede's down special resembles a Moblin's spear swipe attack in Wind Waker.
  • Tektite is an Ivysaur that likes to jump a lot. Both are quadrupeds and jumping is how Tektites like to move around.
  • Like Like is a yellow Yoshi that favors throwing, similar to a Like Like's battle strategy of eating Link when he gets too close. It also constantly moves at a slow pace like Like Likes are known to do as a result of the sticky floor in its fight.
  • Darknut is a Dark Link with increased attack power, referencing its heavy sword, that becomes faster and stronger when weakened as a nod to most incarnations of the Darknut losing their armor as their fights go on. The battle is based on the Twilight Princess incarnation of the enemy, as alluded to by the fight taking place on the Bridge of Eldin's Battlefield stage.
  • Cuccos are represented by tiny Falcos on Skyloft. The first Falco starts with 100% damage, and after you knock it out, four more Falcos appear, just like Cuccos will summon a large flock to attack you when provoked. The Cucco item appears in this stage and can be thrown at the Falcos.
  • Bokoblins are represented by four dark brown King K. Rools, with the first one carrying an Ore Club (or Boko Club), and the other three as its henchmen.

The Legend of Zelda (original)

  • The original Link is represented by Young Link, referencing how Young Link is technically Link's original portrayal. Moreover, his spirit battle is a representation of Link in an endgame state, as Young Link wears his red tunic in reference to the Red Ring, he has increased damage on his melee weapons referencing the Magical Sword, and he is fought in Find Mii representing Death Mountain.

Link's Awakening

  • Marin is represented by Zelda with a sleep-inducing floor, the former being a nod to Marin's uncanny resemblance to Zelda and the latter representing how the world she is in is just a dream. She is also assisted by Link, which is fitting given that Link and Marin develop a strong bond throughout his adventure on Koholint Island. It is also a timed battle to represent how her home will eventually disappear once the Wind Fish wakes up.
  • The Wind Fish is represented by a large Jigglypuff wearing a nightcap with a sleep-inducing floor, as Link's Awakening takes place in its dreams.
  • The Awakening incarnation of Link is represented by Toon Link, due to him using the remake's chibi art style, on Tortimer Island, to obviously reference Koholint. A Chain Chomp assist appears during the fight, due to them being in said game.
  • The Owl is a Falco, another bird, fought at the bridge section of Wuhu Island, starting with a Poké Ball that contains Kyogre, standing in for the Wind Fish.

Ocarina of Time

  • Kaepora Gaebora's fight flips the screen upside-down every few seconds, as a nod to his habit of just spinning his head around mid-dialogue.
  • ReDeads are four black Mewtwos who love to spam their down special (Disable) to stun their opponents. Their battle takes place in Hyrule Castle 64, which fits not just because it represents their home game, but also because ReDeads can be found in the Market in the future.
  • Darunia is a yellow Donkey Kong in a lava floor, due to living in a volcano, accompanied by various Jigglypuffs spamming Rollout, referencing the Gorons' ability to roll themselves.
  • Saria is a fight with Isabelle and a Young Link ally covered in fog, and charges Final Smashes quickly. The Fog is a reference to the Lost Woods, while the final smashes reference her powers as a sage. Young Link also accompanies her since they are friends, and in World of Light, she is also the key to finding Young Link.
  • Impa is a Sheik that eventually gets increased defense in the Great Temple. Being a Sheikah, it would make sense to be Sheik, and she is Zelda's retainer, so the Temple would represent Hyrule Castle, with her defense buffs showing her powers as a sage. Deku nuts also spawn to represent flash bombs. Finally, in World of Light, getting her is what allows you to find Zelda, the person she serves under.
  • Malon is a Zelda that likes to drink milk and throws Cuccos at you. Since she is a farmhand, she can use her Cuccos to attack, and the cows' milk is healthy enough to give her a power boost. Her spirit increases the power of shooting weapons, which is most likely a reference to her bow-wielding Termina counterpart, Romani. She is also one of the ingredients for summoning the spirit of her horse, Epona (the other being a Rapidash).
  • Koume & Kotake are a pair of Bayonettas, a witch like them, carrying a Freezie and a Fire Flower to reference their elemental powers. They are fought in Gerudo Valley, where they appear as stage hazards. Alternatively, they can be summoned with the cores of Charlotte Aulin (who specializes in magic attacks), a Fire Flower, and a Freezie (a nod to Koume and Kotake's fire and ice based attacks respectively). They're also an enhanceable spirit that can become Twinrova, the form they take during their boss fight in Ocarina of Time. Equipping Twinrova's spirit increases the user's magic attacks, for obvious reasons.
  • A Fairy Bottle is represented by a Young Link and fought in the Fountain of Dreams, as fairies in the Zelda universe are commonly found in fountains and springs. Both fighters also take critical damage as soon as the battle starts, as Fairy Bottles can only be used by characters who are low on health, both in Zelda and in the Smash Bros. games.
  • Young Zelda is a slightly shrunken Zelda accompanied by Young Link. The duo is fought on Hyrule Castle, where the two first met in Ocarina of Time. She can then be enhanced into her adult self.

Majora's Mask

  • Skull Kid is a Mii Brawler wearing his costume with 2 Meta Knights being stand-ins for Tatl and Tael, his fairy helpers. The area is also covered in fog as a nod to his illusion magic. Plus, being an Assist Trophy himself, Skull Kid will come in to mess with the player's controls. He is also fought in the Garden of Hope to represent the forest he shows up in. He can also be enhanced to his version that wears the Majora's Mask.
  • Fierce Deity Link is, of course, Link in his Fierce Deity outfit. To simulate his sheer power, he gets extra attack power while your fighter gets less defense and becomes easier to launch. Additionally, he's available as a summon that requires the Happy Mask Salesman (the Moon Child who gives you the mask resembles him), Deku Link (Link's first transformation mask), and Ultra Sword Kirby (a powerful sword like his). Also, as a nod to the Dark powers of the mask, this spirit is with Dharkon in The Final Battle, and also guards Bayonetta.
  • The Happy Mask Salesman is represented by a dark Young Link, mirroring the Salesman's surprisingly creepy demeanor if Link angers him by not paying him. The battle takes place on the Umbra Clock Tower (representing the clock tower in Clock Town), and the battle is timed, possibly to reflect his reappearance in Majora's Mask and the strict time limit you find yourself under before The End of the World as We Know It.
  • The Moon can be summoned by Majora's Mask, since the mask's power was responsible for the moon to fall to Termina.

Oracle Games

  • The battles against both main Oracles seem to rather reference the Goddesses they're named after, which is perhaps a nod to the fandom's theory they are avatars of the Goddesses themselves:
    • Nayru is 2 blue Zeldas that like to use Nayru's Love and get temporary invincibility, which not only references the character, but also references her spell in Ocarina of Time. In World of Light, she's also found in the Temple of Light sub-area, furthering the connection to the goddess.
    • Din is 2 red Zeldas that opt to almost solely use Din's Fire and the fight is on a lava floor, referencing how in Ocarina of Time, the tale of Hyrule's creation mentioned that Din shaped the land with her fiery arms.
  • Ricky is a Little Mac who likes to jump a lot, referencing his jumping abilities and use of his fists with boxing gloves to attack. note
  • Dimitri is represented by a Yoshi that constantly uses its neutral special, which is how Dimitri normally attacks. He is also assisted by Young Link with the stage being Great Bay to represent the island he is found on during Ages.
  • Moosh is a Blue Bowser who uses his Bowser Bomb constantly, which represents the blue bear's main form of attack, a ground pound. His spirit also grants the ability to Instadrop.

Four Swords duology

  • Vaati is a Ridley with an Ore Club with constant wind going on. The Ore Club making its wind gusts and the strong wind reference how Vaati is a Wind Mage, and Ridley is the best person to reference how he is an Eldritch Abomination.

Wind Waker

  • Tetra is a blue Toon Link who is fought on Pirate Ship, all of which reference both Tetra and Toon Link's debuts in Wind Waker. The only items that appear during the battle are Bullet Bills, which is not so different to how Tetra and her crew had to launch Link in a barrel from a catapult into the Forsaken Fortress. The heavy winds hazard references how the direction from which the wind blows is an important gameplay mechanic in Wind Waker. Additionally, Tetra's spirit can be enhanced into Zelda's Wind Waker form (or Toon Zelda if you prefer), which is Tetra's true identity as revealed by the King of Hyrule. When equipped, the spirit has a chance of allowing the user to use their Final Smash twice in a row, similar to how Zelda aids in Link in the final battle against Ganondorf by firing light arrows at him, is knocked unconscious by Ganondorf, but gets up and continues to help Link shortly afterwards.
  • Beedle in Wind Waker wears only a pair of swim trunks, so he gets to be represented by an armorless Shulk who is assisted by Toon Link, his customer. His condition is that every item that spawns will be pulled towards him (in this case, the Beetle item from Skyward Sword), referencing his name, merchant occupation, and love for beetles.
  • Medli is a red Isabelle who is assisted by a red Charizard standing-in for Valoo, the dragon patron deity of Dragon Roost Island whom Medli is the apprentice attendant of, similar to how Isabelle's job in the Animal Crossing series consists of attending others. Both Isabelle and Charizard have increased jump power, not so different to how both the Rito and Valoo have the ability to fly. When equipped as a spirit, Medli grants the user immunity against strong winds, which is yet another nod to her flying abilities.
  • Valoo, being a giant dragon, is of course represented by a giant Charizard, and he is also fought on the Volcano of the Wii Sports Resort since he makes his home on top of Dragon Roost Island's volcano.
  • The Fishman is a battle with Squirtle on the pirate ship with reduced buoyancy and reversible controls, respectively nodding to Wind Waker's limited swimming time, and the fact that he charts out the map of the Great Sea for you to keep you from getting lost.

Twilight Princess

  • Midna is a green-clad Bayonetta, which fits them both being sarcastic dark-magic wielders with Prehensile Hair, fought on the Bridge of Eldin to reference one of the more iconic areas of her game. Midna herself also appears as an Assist Trophy. She's also an enhanceable Spirit that becomes her riding Wolf Link, which improves your dash attack.
  • Ganondorf is, well, Ganondorf himself. The fight is a stamina battle to represent the no-holds-barred sword duel at the end of Twilight Princess, and he gets increased attack power at half health to represent his "second phase". This version of Ganondorf is enhanceable, and he becomes the version of Dark Beast Ganon from the same game. Beast Ganon confers Impact Run, which references said incarnation's penchant for charging around in his fight.

Minish Cap

  • Ezlo is a Toon Link that shifts sizes, referencing how in that game, he allowed him to change in size.

Phantom Hourglass

Spirit Tracks

  • The Phantom is a Zelda who favors her down special, which of course summons a Phantom. It's also an enhanceable Spirit that becomes the Zelda of said game, referencing how she aids Link by possessing Phantoms with her ghost.
  • Byrne is represented by Sheik, another ninja-like fighter, who also has increased power in her punches and grabs to simulate the mechanical hand he has.

Skyward Sword

  • The battle with The Imprisoned has you fighting a giant King K. Rool, who has super armor, but moves much slower. Meanwhile, the Assist Trophy of Ghirahim defends him, referencing his role in the source game. Of course, it's a stamina battle, so the image of a traditional Zelda boss fight comes to mind here... and the battle's also timed, just like all of the fights against The Imprisoned.
  • To summon The Imprisoned's true form, Demise, you need both his core as well as his servant Ghirahim's (to perform the ritual to unseal him and become his sword).
  • Speaking of Skyward Sword, the fight with Loftwing pits you against Falco in Skyloft (the hub world of the aforementioned game) while strong wind periodically blows in. Additionally, he's fought as a giant, since Loftwings are large birds.
  • Fi is a battle against Link in Skyworld using the Wild Tunic, likely meaning to be the Link from said game in an advanced state of his adventure. Fi can also be summoned with Serena (a fountain goddess) and Aegislash (a ghost sword Pokémon)
  • Groose is a fight against Wario (another "loser" who is uncomfortable to be around), and the stage is filled with various explosives — a reference to his famous "Groosenator" weapon used to fight the Imprisoned.

Link Between Worlds

  • Yuga is a giant Inkling with increased special power, and you have to beat him twice. Being with Inkling makes sense since he has a fondness for paintings, and him appearing twice is a reference to him turning into "Ganon".
  • The Wall-Merged Link spirit battle takes place in the Flat Zone, with Mr. Game and Watch being your first opponent. After defeating him, you have to defeat Young Link immediately afterward. Wall-Merged Link can be enhanced into Link in his standard Link Between Worlds appearance.
  • Ravio is a Young Link with a permanent Bunny Hood that also starts the battle with a boomerang, has a fixation for items, and only uses his specials, all of which reference the fact that he sells Link all the equipment that he needs for his journey, with the Bunny Hood referencing his own hood. Also, Ravio is Link's Lorulean counterpart.
  • Hilda is a purple Zelda with a blue Young Link as her ally, as a stand-in for Ravio. The battle starts out with a Nightmare Assist Trophy plunging the entire arena in darkness, since Lorule is the Dark World counterpart to Hyrule.

Triforce Heroes

  • Madame Couture is a Rosalina with a green, red, and purple Toon Link joining her over time, a reference to how Link constantly goes back to her to get new outfits.
  • The Link Tower/Totem Link is a red, purple, and green Toon Link team that favors using smash attacks. Hammers, Bob-ombs, and Boomerangs spawn during this fight to represent the Hammer, Bomb, and Boomerang items from Triforce Heroes.

Breath of the Wild

  • The fight against Urbosa gives Zero Suit Samus a Killing Edge, meant to reference the Scimitar of the Seven. The stage is the Battlefield form of Gerudo Valley and the main platform is electrified, evoking Vah Naboris, the Humongous Mecha under her command.
  • Mipha is a purple Inkling girl, who is similarly a humanoid take on an aquatic creature, who constantly regenerates as a nod to her healing magic.
  • Revali's battle is similar to the Loftwing's, being a battle with Falco (appropriately, since Revali is an obvious Expy of Falco) with strong wind in Skyloft, referencing both his Revali's Gale technique and his Humongous Mecha, Vah Medoh, and Skyloft being the closest thing to Rito Village. Additionally, he tends to spam his Blaster to reference him being an archer.
  • Daruk is a yellow Donkey Kong who is wielding an Ore Club, representing his Boulder Breaker. In Adventure, he's found in a volcanic area, referencing his home of Death Mountain. Additionally, his shield has increased durability, which references his ability to generate a shield to protect himself.
  • And then you get to the fight against Breath of the Wild Zelda, which pits you against all of the Champions at once (including Link) before you can even get to her. Fortunately, their health is rather low to compensate.
  • A Guardian is represented as a giant R.O.B. that only uses its neutral special, which is a laser. The battle is also set in the Great Plateau and is a stamina fight to reference how tough they are to beat.
  • Calamity Ganon is a giant Ganondorf on the Great Plateau. The player has a Zelda ally, since she is the one keeping him under control, and if Ganon knocks her out, the battle is over, as she isn't keeping him under control anymore. The sudden damage you take slowly throughout the fight is a reference to Malice, a damaging Made of Evil substance that Calamity Ganon produces and spreads across Hyrule. Even in World of Light, he is what guards the boss fight against his Ocarina of Time incarnation which references Dark Beast Ganon being after the Calamity Ganon fight. His Easy Level Trick (goading him into a Taking You with Me attack in which he dies slightly before you, giving you the win) may also be an unintentional mythology gag about his mental state in Breath of the Wild.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

  • The Diminutive Guardian is a tiny R.O.B. with a bigger brown R.O.B. defending it using its neutral special. While the bigger one is the more dangerous of the two, only the smaller one needs to be defeated. This could be a reference to the fact the Little One has the ability to activate Guardians and other Shekiah technology. Alternatively, the giant R.O.B. could be a reference to Harbinger Ganon, a calamity corrupted version of Terrako (the Diminutive Guardian's real name) from another timeline. The Diminutive Guardian's spirit gives Improved Escape, as it escaped from the Bad Future of Breath of the Wild through a Time Portal. It may also reference the fact that Terrako's influence helped the Champions and Hyrule as a whole escape from Calamity Ganon's century of destruction.
  • Impa has you fighting Sheik while Bob-ombs fall down periodically, referencing the Bomb Barrels used in her special attack. To represent her in-game ninjitsu ability, two more Sheiks appear as illusions, where you must find and defeat the real one. Her spirit buffs the damage dealt by thrown items, potentially a allusion to her Hat-Throwing dash attack in Age of Calamity.
  • Master Kohga is King K. Rool who loves to spam his Blunderbuss, referencing Kohga's affinity for using iron balls. After a while, he will be accompanied by a Giant Mii Swordfighter wearing the Yiga outfit and wielding a Killing Edge, a shoo-in for his right-hand man Sooga. Since the Yiga clan loves bananas, banana peels will appear during the fight. In addition, the battle is fought on Suzaku Castle, fitting in with the Japanese-esque Clan. His spirt increases the fighter's weight, in order to match Kohga's Acrofatic status.

Tears of the Kingdom

  • Rauru is represented by a black Mewtwo who spams Shadow Ball, referencing his light magic attack. The battle first requires defeating six opponents referencing the sages Link must awakenen throughout the game. Starting off with a red female Robin, a cyan male Inkling, a yellow Charizard, and a Pit representing Riju, Sidon, Yunobo, and Teba, respectively. Each focuses on attacks representing their element (or simply arrows in Pit's case). They will then be followed by a giant brown R.O.B. representing Mineru and Princess Zelda herself. The battle takes place on the Battlefield Temple, referencing the sky Islands and the Temple of Time.
