Mirai Asahina (Cure Miracle)

A young girl who's just about to enter middle school, Mirai is lively, friendly, and gets easily excited over anything she finds interesting—which, considering her overall enthusiasm for life, is a lot of things. After a chance meeting with Riko, she discovers a whole world where magic exists and teams up with Riko to become Cure Miracle.
- Anti-Gravity Clothing: In Cure Miracle's Diamond form, she has a ring of light-green orbs around her ponytail that aren't held in place by anything.
- Badass Adorable: She is very cute and she's very good at both magic and fighting.
- Book Dumb: Actually averted. In contrast to several of her predecessors, Mirai has decent grades in school, with the only subject she has trouble with being math, and that's only because she finds it boring.
- Break the Cutie: Mirai was really heartbroken when her childhood friend Mofurun was abducted by Dark Matter…
- Character Catchphrase: "Wakuwaku monda!" (This is so exciting!) and "~tte iimashita?!" (Did you just say ~?!).
- Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Mirai is very different to her predecessors Nagisa Misumi and Saki Hyuuga. All three of them are the lead members of their duo Cure team, are Genki Girls and are the Foils to the other Cure. While both Saki and Nagisa do not like studying and are very sporty, athletic girls, Mirai is the reverse to both of them, where she is an academic with very decent grades (except she hates math when she flunked it at one point) but is not an athletic. In contrast to Nagisa and Saki's Cure forms, Cure Black and Cure Bloom/Cure Bright, where they are virtually the same in their human form, Mirai's Cure Miracle form is an Older Alter Ego who looks slightly much older than her human form.
- Cute Witch: Though she is not from Magic World, she still fits this trope, especially when she became Cure Miracle.
- Everybody Hates Mathematics: She says that it doesn't excite her and was absolutely embarrassed that she got only 26%. This is another point of contrast towards Riko.
- Genki Girl: As per Pretty Cure tradition. Her ecstatic reaction to seeing a magic user for the first time, namely rush up to her and barrage her with questions, followed by her upbeat and friendly personality should be enough evidence.
- Girls Love Stuffed Animals: She has had Mofurun since she was a baby, and Mirai adores her.
- Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Blonde and a total sweetheart.
- Lost Food Grievance: Episode 36 shows that you do not steal Mirai's food. Just ask Chikurun, the fairy who tried and found himself wrapped in a pair of window curtains.
- Magical Accessory: Mahou Tsukai Precure use different gems to transform and to perform attacks.
- Meaningful Name: She had an interesting example of this trope in the last All Stars. When the four pink leaders from previous seasons tried to combine their attacks that have a different source of energy to cope with the villains, they failed. Cure Miracle made, well, a miracle and combined their attacks properly.
- Mood Whiplash: Her mood was unstable during the loss of Mofurun in the film.
- New Transfer Student: A vice versa example with Riko. She begins to attend Riko's school in the Magic World in the beginning of series.
- No Indoor Voice: Expect plenty of shouting whenever she finds something exciting. A prime example being when she meets Riko for the first time, completely surprising the latter with her shout and almost making her fall off her broom.
- Official Couple: With Riko in the manga.
- Older Alter Ego: She looks older as Cure Miracle.
- Pink Heroine: Her Cure outfit is pink and she's the main Precure heroine of the series.
- Power Dyes Your Hair: Her orange hair turns a bright blonde as Cure Miracle. Notably, like Flora, Heart, Peach, and Bloom, she's a pink Cure without pink hair in Cure form.
- Solar and Lunar: In contrast to Riko, Mirai's surname contains the kanji for day, while Riko’s assumed name contains the kanji for night. Continuing the theme, she is blonde with a lively, sunny personality, and wears bright colours.
- Sweet Tooth: She likes pancakes very much (and sweets in general).
- Technician Versus Performer: The Performer to Riko's Technician when it comes to magic. Mirai is a newcomer to using magic, but she has a natural talent for it thanks to her determination and reliance on her gut feelings.
- Technicolor Eyes: Has purple eyes as opposed to the more common Innocent Blue Eyes or Curtains Match the Window to go with her blonde hair, possibly indicating her stronger connection with the magical world compared to her other friends in the No Magic World.
Riko Izayoi (Cure Magical)

"Our Magic! Cure Magical!"
A girl from the Magic World who attends a magic school. Despite being smart and studious, she isn't very good at magic and it tends to backfire on her. She meets Mirai when travelling to the "No-Magic World" to search for the Linkle Stone Emerald, and when they're attacked by one of the Big Bad's minions, she teams up with Mirai to become Cure Magical.
- All According to Plan: Riko's catchphrase, "all according to my calculations". It's more for self-reassurance though, as she messes up her magic frequently. In practice, she usually just means “I Meant to Do That.”
- Ash Face: In Episode 6, as a result of a failed spell.
- Big Sister Worship: Riko thinks the world of Liz. Unfortunately, this admiration is deconstructed in episode 6; Ever since she was little, Riko wanted to be a great magician like Liz, to the point of mimicking her magic techniques instead of creating her own, one of the reasons she is an Inept Mage.
- Birthday Hater: She comes off as this in episode 40, because her parents throw extravagant parties, her mother thinks reading a children's story is a present, and her father gives her rocks as gifts. She gets over it by the end of the episode.
- Character Catchphrase: “All according to my calculations.” To a lesser extent, there’s “ I didn’t fall!”Explanation
- Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Honoka Yukishiro and Mai Mishou are both academically smart, are talented in academics and also hailed from Earth, but they cannot use their powers outside of their Cure form. Riko is the opposite to both of them, who is not academically talented and hails from another world; and being a witch she is able to use actual magic without transforming into her Cure form.
- Cute Witch: She's a witch in training, but she already manages to nail the cute part.
- Deadpan Snarker: Has her moments when Ha-chan keeps using magic to help and do things which the former reminds her not to do it.
- Fish out of Water: To a minor extent. She gets the names of stars wrong since they had different names in the Magic World. When she's invited volleyball, she sneaks out just to research it.
- Good with Numbers: Despite being the New Transfer Student from the Magical Land, she's the only one who got a perfect score on a math test. This is another contrast between her and Mirai.
- Graceful Ladies Like Purple: She's a dignified girl whose Cure outfit is purple.
- Heroic Ambidexterity: Downplayed. Riko is right-handed like Mirai, but as Cure Magical she often holds her wand in her left hand for special attacks and finishers to contrast Cure Miracle, who always uses her right hand.
- I Meant to Do That: This is Riko's go-to excuse whenever her magic goes haywire or doesn't work as intended, and what she usually means when she says her catchphrase.
- Inept Mage: Despite having studied magical theory all her life, she isn't very skilled in magic and she took the longest to fully master a spell that the others had already passed. Doesn't stop her from trying, though.
- Instant Fan Club: In episode 13 it's suggested that Riko is getting many admirers.

- Only One Name: Only has a first name. She later comes up with the last name "Izayoi" (referring to the moon on the night Mirai saw her) when she attends Mirai's school.

- Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She acts distant but is nicer than she looks. Taken to almost Tsundere-like lengths when Mirai is involved.
- Technician Versus Performer: The Technician to Mirai's Performer when it comes to magic. Riko has been studying magic all her life and knows the theory well enough, but isn't very good at the more practical aspects.
- Tsundere: While she is a Nice Girl at heart, she has a tendency to be standoffish and puts up a front.
Haa-chan/Kotoha Hanami (Cure Felice)

"Spreading blessings to lives far and wide! Cure Felice!"
(Formerly) a fairy Mirai and Riko find in a book and take care of. As the PreCures find more Linkle Stones, Haa-chan grows older and more intelligent, but never loses her whimsical curiosity of the world. She briefly disappears after the appearance of the Linkle Stone Emerald and the defeat of Dokurokushe before reappearing in the No Magic world as a human. She then uses the Emerald's power to become Cure Felice and subsequently takes the name "Kotoha Hanami" as her human identity.
- Baby Talk: Her name comes from her baby speak.
- Cassandra Truth: In episode 27, she goes to the students of the Magic World and introduces herself as the little fairy they knew… but they don't believe her.
- Cheerful Child: Even as a teenager, she still comes across as this.
- Children Are Innocent: As sweet and kind as she is, her childlike enthusiasm, playful energy, and simple curiosity have caused trouble for Mirai and Riko more than once.
- Damn You, Muscle Memory!: In Episode 23, she instinctively jumps to chase a cat only to fall back down again, forgetting that since she has no wings anymore, she can't fly.
- Disappears into Light: At the end of episode 21, though she reappears in the Non-Magic world the next episode.
- Exotic Eye Designs: As a fairy, her eyes contained pink flowers. They disappear when she turns into a human but reappear when she transforms into Cure Felice.
- Fairy Companion: The second fairy in the franchise to actually look like what most people think of as fairies (that is, a small humanoid with insect wings) instead of a small animal. However, she grows out of this when she becomes human and loses her wings.
- Flowers of Nature: Her fairy and Cure forms have flowers on her hair and clothes as a reference to her flower powers.
- Forgot I Could Fly: Inverted. She loses her wings after becoming a human, but there are times where she will jump into air, hoping to fly, only to fall back down after realizing she can't fly anymore.
- Green Thumb: Most of her powers as Cure Felice are flower based.
- Happily Adopted: Episode 15, the Cures mention that they (and Mofurun) are like her surrogate parents. This is brought up again in episodes 23 and 24… which is awkward, because Haa-chan is now Mirai and Riko's age. Kotoha runs away from home in episode 26, and thinks of Mirai and Riko when she sees children with their parents. This probably says something. In episode 32 she even states they’re like her moms when introducing herself to their class. To which the teacher can only comment that they are some young moms.
- Incredibly Lame Pun: As Haa-chan lives in the Linkle "Sumahon". "Sumaho" is a Japanese slang word meaning "smartphone", and "hon" is Japanese for "book". Thus, Haa-chan lives in the Smartome or Phone Book.
- Instant Expert: Zig-zagged. She can create a broom out of thin air, a feat that according to Riko even the Headmaster can't perform. However, when she tries to ride said broom, she loses control, spins around in the air several times, and eventually lands in a tree.
- Involuntary Shapeshifting: In Episode 15 she can turn into her alternate forms seen in the title sequence (including a space alien). This is caused by her eating too much.
- Is It Something You Eat?: Episode 12: "Is Know-How a food?"
- Magical Accessory: Mahou Tsukai Precure use different gems to transform and to perform attacks.
- Meaningful Name: Her human name comes from "Kotoba", a word which means word and contains the character for leaf. (Keep in mind Haa-chan came from a book). Her last name is written with the characters for "flower" and "sea" - in other words, sea of flowers. In-Universe, she even points out why she picked her name, as she used her words to convince her superior to stay in the Non-Magical World, as well as her having a recurring vision of a sea of flowers.
- Nice Girl: Sweet, cheerful, and kind, albeit not without a penchant for mischief.
- Odd Name Out: Only girl whose Cure name doesn’t start with M.
- Older Alter Ego: As Cure Felice, she is much older not only physically, but mentally too.
- Plot-Relevant Age-Up: She grows up over the course of the series when Mirai and Riko find a Linkle Stone. In Episode 5, she grows from being a newborn to a toddler. In Episode 11, she gets another age up and begins to speak full sentences. In Episode 21, when all of the Linkle Stones are present, she grows yet again, becoming a fairy girl around Mirai and Riko's age. In Episode 22, she appears without the wings.
- Power of Creation: She can create things by drawing them with her wand — something Riko says should be impossible with standard magic.
- Redhead In Green: She's a pink-haired girl who always wears a mainly green dress.
- Rose-Haired Sweetie: Has beautiful light pink hair and literally sweet.
- Sixth Ranger: Third Pretty Cure, but similar principle. She becomes a Cure and joins the team in Episode 22.
- Speaks Fluent Animal: Or at least Pegasus, in episode 28. She is fully capable of understanding what the pegasi are saying.
- Unexplained Recovery: Episode 22 she comes back after vanishing in the previous episode. She doesn't quite remember how she came back, though she remembers wishing on the Linkle Emerald and Sumahon to be a Pretty Cure.
- Verbal Tic: Even as Kotoha, she still is prone to go "Haa" in a high-pitched voice.
- The Worf Effect: Benefits from this. The other Cures suffer from So Last Season against the Yokubals made from Dokurokushe's remains. Cure Felice wipes the floor with them.
- Wrong Context Magic: The Power of Creation that Haa-chan uses marks her powers as being of a distinctly different nature than what the other magicians in the series have.
- You Shall Not Pass!: She attempts to keep Gamettsu from finishing off the Cures by flying into his path. She keeps intercepting him despite his attempts to get her out of his way.
Allies
Mofurun

- Action Girl: Only in The Movie, when she temporarily becomes a Pretty Cure herself.
- Ambiguous Gender Identity: It's never explicitly stated in the show itself what Mofurun's gender is, if Mofurun even has one, but the fact that they become a Pretty Cure in The Movie points to them being a girl.
Word of God from different sources has had contradictory answers on the matter:- Some of the TV staff initially thought of Mofurun as genderless
, but later changed their minds over the course of the show's development. The film staff opted to give Cure Mofurun an androgynous design because of this. - The official Pretty Cure Pretty Store includes Mofurun in the lineup of female mascots, but clarified on Twitter that Mofurun’s gender is simply Mofurun, and he can be a boy, she can be a girl, or they can be neither.
- According to◊ head writer Isao Murayama, Mirai initially imagined Mofurun to be a boy, but Mofurun came to identify herself as a girl upon developing sapience. However, a scene directly addressing this never made it into the anime for time constraints.
- Some of the TV staff initially thought of Mofurun as genderless
- Big Eater: She could give the Cookie Monster a run for his money.
- Breakout Character: Mofurun is extremely popular, with merchandise of her selling extraordinarily well and a 2019 poll even voting her the best side character in the entire franchise. This is further evidenced by the fact that The Movie is about her becoming a Pretty Cure, and she and the Cures continue to make appearances in movies after their season.
- Can't Catch Up: Feels this way after Haa-chan becomes a Cure, feeling she can't do much. A quick pep talk from Mirai fixes it.
- Character Catchphrase: "I smell a sweet scent, mofu!" Said whenever she senses a Linkle Stone.
- The Chosen One: In the movie, the Magic World hosts a once-a-century festival to celebrate the awakening of the Wishing Stone and send their wishes to it, with the most pure-hearted wish being the one that the stone resonates with the most. Mofurun, who only wished for Mirai, Riko, and Haa-chan’s wishes to be granted, had the most pure wish, making her the chosen one and the only person that the stone would work for.
- Cool Big Sis: To Haa-chan when she was growing up.
- Declaration of Protection: In the movie; "I WANT TO SAVE MIRAI-MOFUUUUUUUU!"
- Disney Death: In The Movie, at the hands of the Big Bad.
- Exotic Eye Designs: When she comes to life, her eyes turn bright blue with stars as the irises. As Cure Mofurun, this eye pattern is retained, but with human sclera.
- Humanity Ensues: Briefly becomes a human Cure in The Movie as part of her wish.
- Identical Stranger: When she becomes a Pretty Cure in The Movie, her human appearance is remarkably similar to Mirai's civilian appearance, but with bigger hair and Mofurun's teddy bear eyes as irises.
- Living Toys: In a stark contrast to previous mascots who were fairies, Mofurun was just a stuffed animal before she was given sentience and speech.
- Supplementary material indicates that even when she’s in her human form during the movie, she’s still a living toy stuffed with fluff.
- The Magic Goes Away: Her ability to become a Pretty Cure in the movie came from the Wishing Stone responding to her Declaration of Protection. Once her wish was fulfilled, it went away.
- Morality Pet: In The Movie, she becomes this to Kumata, who has a My God, What Have I Done? moment after seemingly killing her as Dark Matter.
- Nice Girl: Mofurun’s heart is as sweet as her Sweet Tooth.
- Only the Pure of Heart: The reason that the Wishing Stone chooses her is because her wish—for Mirai, Riko, and Haa-chan’s wishes to be granted— was the most pure of them all.
- Spell My Name With An S: Mofurun or Mofulun?
- Sweet Tooth: Mofurun has quite the appetite for sweets, especially cookies.
- Third-Person Person: Refers to herself in the third person.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Cookies. It's the first thing she says when Kei asks her what food she likes while writing a book about Mofurun. In the All Stars movie, she ends up exposing the existence of magic to the Go! Princess Pretty Cure girls after tackling Haruka's face for some cookies she smelled, and earlier in the movie when Mirai was pointing out various foods served at the festival, Mofurun's response to every single one was "I wanna put it on a cookie and eat it, mofu!" She even said this about the ramen.
- Transformation Trinket: Mofurun herself is one for Mirai and Riko to transform into Pretty Cures, and this somehow gave her the ability to speak and move.
- Verbal Tic: Ends her sentences with "-mofu".
- Wrong Context Magic: An odd example of A Wizard Did It in a setting where magicians are plentiful, and discussed in fact. Mofurun gained the ability to speak upon becoming the Transformation Trinket for Miracle and Magical, but the exact nature of the magic that made this possible is a mystery to everyone. Furthermore, her words imply that she was somehow sentient for quite a long time even before that, and that becoming their Transformation Trinket merely granted her speech and free movement to express her existing sapience.
Kochou
Kochou/Principal/Headmaster

- Actually, I Am Him: In episode 2, Mirai meets him while looking for the Magic School's headmaster. Of course, Mirai has no idea who the headmaster is.
- Big Good: Kind, laid back and supportive of his students, especially Mirai and Riko.
- Big "WHAT?!": His reaction whenever something happens...
- Bizarre Taste in Food: The Magic World has a fruit that's encased in ice. Most magicians cast a spell to thaw the ice. Kochou eats it while it's still in the ice. He also likes bitter tea.
- Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": His name hasn't been revealed and everyone calls him by his title. But see below.
- Henshin Hero: In Episode 20 he uses the "Cure Up Rapapa" spell to transform into a battle mode, with Anti-Gravity Clothing appearing on him one by one. However he doesn't get a dedicated stock footage and isn't considered to be a Cure.
- His Name Really Is "Barkeep": Episode 45 suggests Kochou is his actual name.
- Light 'em Up: His attack magic seems to be this way.
- Nice Guy: A very friendly, polite and calm young man who's a headmaster of the Magic School who's happy enough to have Mirai enrolled even though she's from Earth.
- Older Than They Look: He met Mirai's grandmother when she was a middle schooler and looked exactly the same age as he does now. Episode 20 reveals that he was maintaining his youth and his true appearance seems to be only a bit older than Mirai's grandmother. He returns to his previous appearance in episode 22.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: In contrast to the vice-principal, he is welcoming of Mirai and recognizes her importance.
- Secret-Keeper: He learns the girls' secret in episode 2 and supports them, allowing Mirai to enroll in the school.
- The Seven Mysteries: All Seven Mysteries of the magic school are about him.
- Vague Age: In universe, his age is one of The Seven Mysteries of the Magic School. He is generally believed to be Older Than They Look. In Episode 20, he reverts to his true age, which is old.
- Willfully Weak: He has actually been saving magic in preparation for the great calamity that will befall the magic world.
- Wizard Classic: His formal look, complete with a huge, levitating hat. He prefers his casual clothes though.

Kanoko Yuki

- Cool Old Lady: She lets Mirai attend the Magic School, purely on the basis of trusting her decisions, though she had no reason to really believe her claim.
Kyoto
Kyoto/Vice-Principal/Vice-Headmaster
Voiced by: Yoshino Ohtori
The vice-principal of Magic School.
- Everyone Calls Her "Barkeep": As with Kochou, her given name hasn't been revealed.
- Stern Teacher: She gets mad at Riko in episode 2, because Riko skipped her remedial courses and brought a Muggle to the Magic World. Kyoko also doesn't buy Riko's Precure excuse, which makes sense since "We're actually the magicians from legend" is a hard story to swallow. Then in episode 3 she disapproves of Mirai being enrolled in the Magic School. But by episode 9 she acknowledges Mirai as a student.
Cassie the Magic Crystal
Voiced by: Satomi Arai
A Crystal Ball owned by the headmaster of Magic School.
- Animate Inanimate Object: She takes the form of a crystal ball while still being fully sapient. However, dust makes her sneeze. Also when Kouchou-sensei turns old in episode 20, her voice changes too into the one of an old lady.
- Sassy Secretary: She dutifully assists Kochou, but then gets into a fight with Kyoto when she starts questioning the headmaster. She also frequently complains that from making divinations "her shoulders get stiff".
- Spell My Name With An S: In Episode 11, she reveals her name to be Cassie. Or is it Kathy? Made worse when the Japanese pronunciation for both names can be the same.
- Surveillance as the Plot Demands: One of her functions is to watch things.
- Vagueness Is Coming: In episode 3 she's heard discussing about a confrontation between darkness and light. She does it again in episode 22.
Liz
Voiced by: Kaori Nazuka
Riko's older sister who is a teacher at Magic School.
- The Ace: She's the magician that her younger sister Riko wants to be.
- Always Someone Better: To Riko. Liz outclasses her in magic in nearly every conceivable way... at first.
Lian
Voiced by: Masato Obara
Liz and Riko's father who is a famous archaeologist in Magic World.
- Chekhov's Gunman: Makes several short appearances before his proper introduction in episode 33.
- High-Class Glass: He wears a snazzy monocle.
Jun
Voiced by: Aki Kanada
A sporty student in Magic School who dreams of becoming a fashion designer.
- Brilliant, but Lazy: The reason she has to take supplementary classes is because she has a low attendance.
- Fantastic Anthropologist: She's is utterly fascinated by the No-Magic World and hopes to move there after completing her studies.
- The Slacker: She apparently skips classes just to sneak into the No-Magic World. She eventually overcomes this.
- Terrible Artist: Played with. In episode 30, her painting of Mirai and Riko appears to be abstract art...but then she turns it into a (not abstract) sculpture!
- Tomboy with a Girly Streak: While she does sport the stereotypical look and personality of a Tomboy, she has an interest in fashion, as shown in episode 6 when she materializes fashionable boots she wants from water. Her dream, revealed in Episode 30, is to become a fashion and culture expert in the No-Magic World.
Emily

An introverted student in Magic School who dreams of becoming a hairdresser and stylist.
- Acrophobic Bird: The reason she has to take supplementary classes is because she was too scared to fly on her broom. Later episodes show her gradually gain her confidence in the air. By episode 30, she has gained a magic carpet license.
- Bespectacled Cutie: She's a cute, shy girl with round glasses.
- One-Steve Limit: By technicality. She is the first official Emily in the Pretty Cure franchise, however if you count the dubs, she's preceded by Emily Anderson (a.k.a Miyuki Hoshizora).
- Shrinking Violet: Emily is shy, introverted and easily flustered. She slowly grows out of this as she becomes more confident in her abilities as a magician.
Kei

A forgetful student in Magic School with a dream to become a journalist.
- Forgetful Jones: Has a bad habit of forgetting things, and forgetting to bring materials to an exam is the main reason she has to take supplementary classes over spring break. Mirai helps fix this by making a poster that helps Kei to remember to bring everything with her in the morning.
- Nightmare Fetishist: Has a bit too much fun telling a scary story in Episode 8.

- Day in the Limelight: Souta in Episode 32, Mayumi in Episode 34, and Yuto in Episode 35.

- One-Steve Limit: While "Kana", "Nagase", and "Yuto" stand apart from "Mana", "Nanase", and "Yuko", "Souta" is recycled from Suite Pretty Cure ♪.
- Secret Chaser: Played with with Kana. It's not a matter of her chasing the secret; it's just that she's the only one of the group to notice that something is up whenever something magical happens and tries to get to the bottom of it.
- Student Council President: Yuto is voted this in Episode 35.
- Throw the Dog a Bone: In the Christmas Episode, Kana finally gets conclusive proof that magicians are real, with Mayumi witnessing to boot. She then promises not to tell anyone, since she's just satisfied knowing that she was right.
Villains
The Dark Magicians
The main antagonists in the first half of the series. In General
- Artificial Human: More like "Artifical Magical Being", but similar principle. It's stated that Dokurokushe created his followers. They are transformed animals: A gecko, a bat, a spider, and a turtle.
- The Bus Came Back: Twice:
- Despite being dead, they all reappear and have roles in the Fractured Fairy Tale of episode 29. Batty and Gamettsu are in a Cross-Cast Role.
- Episode 42 showed Batty and Gamettsu being brought back by Orba after Sparda brings them in. Yamoh, or rather his lizard form, appears in episode 45.
Dokurokushe/Kushi
Dokurokushe/Kushi
Voiced by: Yosuke Akimoto / Yūichi Nakamura
- Big Bad: He's the one giving out the orders and calling the shots. But he's the main antagonist of Maho's first half, where Deusmast is instead the antagonist of the latter half.
- Childhood Friends: Kochou and Kushi first met each other when they were students at the magic school in their childhood and immediately became best friends which extended into their adulthood. Their friendship ended on bad terms when Kushi resorted to Dark Magic to find the Linkle Emerald and save the two worlds which Kochou disagrees because he held concerns for Kushi's wellbeing that Kushi arrogantly brushed it off, costing the latter's life after casting dark magic in the process but not before he wrote the letter to Kochou about his regrets if his research is in vain and for nothing proving their friendship still remain intact even if they have their differences a long time ago.
- Clipped-Wing Angel: Even after the Cures defeat him, the ghost of his greed comes back as a giant shadow. It is purified by the appearence of Haa-chan.
- Dem Bones: Based on his hands, he appears to be a skeleton. Turned into one because he overused dark magic.
- Devour the Dragon: He devours Yamoh to feed his power. Surprisingly, it's because Yamoh begged him to.
- Disc-One Final Boss: He appears to be Killed Off for Real in episode 21.
- Empty Shell: According to Yamoh, Kushi is basically gone; all that's left is a power-hungry shell housing dark magic.
- Energy Absorption: In One-Winged Angel form, he starts absorbing Life Energy from both the Magic and Nonmagic Worlds.
- Evil Former Friend: Was a childhood best friend of Kochou's until his obsession with the Linkle Stone went too far.
- Face Framed in Shadow: His face is hidden by the hood of his costume.
- Meaningful Name: Dokuro is Japanese for skull, and he appears to be a skeleton.
- Pride: His Fatal Flaw; As a human wizard and school professor, Kushi was determined to get the Linkle Stone Emerald by other means by researching the dangerous Dark Magic which Kochou disagrees out of concern for the former's wellbeing and tried to stop him which he arrogantly and coldly brushed off and performed it anyway without hesitation which resulted in him losing his life in the process.
- One-Winged Angel: After absorbing the Emerald, he turns into a giant skeleton monster.
- Orcus on His Throne: Reaching the upper limit of this trope, almost to the point of ridiculousness. In the entire first quarter of the series, he hasn't moved from his throne, spoken a word, or done anything other than glare at his underlings, pound the armrest, and cause tremors with rocks falling from the ceiling. Finally averted as of episode 19, where he at least starts talking. He finally starts fighting in Episode 20. Justified as Kushi overused dark magic to the point he was turned into a skeleton, and his skeleton body was on the verge of breaking down into pieces.
- Self-Fulfilling Prophecy:
- Kushi wanted to save the Magical World from a disaster by finding the Linkle Emerald with the use of dark magic, but his desire for power turned out to be the very catastrophe he tried to prevent.
- This trope is then double subverted in the second half. It's revealed that the calamity is separate from Dokurokushe, but then it turns out that the dark magic he used freed the actual instigators.
- The Silent Bob: Even though he doesn't speak, he is still more than capable of getting his point across via gestures. Like the Trope Namer, he does end up speaking after eighteen episodes of voicelessness.
- Unwitting Pawn: He found and gathered various pieces of text that held the secret to dark magic. It was all a ploy by Orba, who scattered it before being sealed away in the hopes that someone would gather it together and awaken it, thereby allowing him and his fellows to free themselves from their cans and free Deusmast.
- The Voiceless: Didn't make a sound for eighteen episodes.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: Kushi wanted the Emerald to stop a foretold catastrophe befalling the magical world. When he couldn't find the Emerald, he studied Dark Magic. Kochou began to worry about him doing something dangerous because he's only his best friend and tried to stop him. Kushi coldly brushed him off saying he doesn't care about his own life but decided to write a letter to the latter if in case, he already perished studying Dark Magic stating that he's still his best friend forever.
- With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: His interest in dark magic didn't go well for him. Instead of granting him the power he needed to stop the foreseen catastrophe, it reduced him to little more than a skeleton.
Yamoh
Voiced by: Yasuhiro Takato
- Back from the Dead: He is resurrected by Labut when the latter finds his detached tail and senses dark magic lingering within it.
- Chekhov's Gun: His tail, removed in episode 21, is the catalyst for his resurrection.
- Consulting Mister Puppet: After his revival, he makes and talks to a Dokurokushe scarecrow. Much later, in episode 45, it's implied the scarecrow may have something to do with Dokurokushe, as it disappears at the end of the episode.
- Devour the Dragon: A rare voluntary version, to the point that he's actually upset when he gets brought back to life. He offers himself up to be consumed by Dokurokushe to help boost his powers.
- Dragon Their Feet: He is revived by Labut after Dokurokushe's death. He is still devoted to Dokurokushe, but now he's the one who's doing all the work.
- Expository Hairstyle Change: After being revived, his curly hair style is replaced by a straightened low ponytail.
- Meaningful Name: Yamori is the Japanese word for gecko. Fitting, seeing as he seems to be a lizard.
- Mouth of Sauron: To an extent; Dokurokushe doesn't seem to talk, so Yamoh relays the commands to the minions. He also seems to have some sort of nonverbal communication with Dokurokushe, as seen in episode 4.
- Non-Action Guy: He was this in the first half, but when everyone else dies he starts making the monsters himself.
- Number Two: To Dokurokushe. He is the one who always gives the orders at the behest of the Big Bad.
- One-Winged Angel: He Yokubarls himself in episode 26.
- Undying Loyalty. Even though he is doing all of the work against the Pretty Cure, he continues doing so in the name of Dokurokushe.
Batty
Voiced by: Koji Yusa
A humanoid bat working for the Dark Magicians and the first general to confront the Pretty Cure.
- Actually Not a Vampire: He looks like one, but he's really more of a bat monster.
- Bat Out of Hell: His appearance is a humanoid bat monster.
- Eyes Always Shut: He is introduced with his eyes completely closed. This disappears when he is outed as a villain.
- Fusion Dance:
- In episode 19, he merges with Sparda and Gamettsu's powers and takes on aspects of both; Sparda's extra limbs and Gamettsu's shell are seen on him when he does this.
- In episode 45, he uses Sparda, Gamettsu, Yamoh, and the Dokurokusche scarecrow to make a Yokubal.
- Genre Savvy: In episode 9, he figures that the Linkle Stones will appear where the Pretty Cure are and goes after them directly.
- Meaningful Name: His name is based off his true nature as a bat.
- Rasputinian Death: Survived the Cures' finishing move and the Cures' fight with Dokurokushe, but dies by simply getting too close to the active Linkle Stones.
- The Remnant: In episode 45 he flies off with the animal forms of his fellow Dark Magicians, the last one to still be himself.
- Too Dumb to Live: Reaching out for the Linkle Stones when they were obviously emitting power probably wasn't a good idea...
- Undying Loyalty: To Dokurokushe, to the point where he sacrifices his wand to block an attack directed at his master.
- Villainous BSoD: After his revival by Orba, he is shown as being depressed now that Dokurokusche is gone for good.
Sparda
Voiced by: Yuu Kobayashi
A humanoid spider and the Dark Magician's second general to fight the Cures.
- Back for the Dead: Subverted. She is turned back into a spider in the same episode she's brought back. She doesn't stay down, however...
- Back from the Dead: In episode 43, she is resurrected by Orba to help fight the Pretty Cure. She is resurrected AGAIN the same episode.
- Death of Personality: Being defeated turns her into a normal, presumably non-sentient spider. This turns out not to be the case. When she is resurrected by Orba, she reveals she still has a grudge against the Pretty Cure. Even after being defeated again and turned back into a spider, she retains her personality, which Orba takes note of and makes her humanoid again.
- Fusion Dance: She fuses with a Yokubaal in Episode 16.
- Meaningful Name: It's a corruption of "Spider".
- Smurfette Principle: The only female general working under Dokurokushe.
- Spiders Are Scary: Her general motif is to take all of the most intimidating aspects of spiders.
- Villain Forgot to Level Grind: In episode 43, she is revived and attacks the Precure with a Yokubaal...unaware since her defeat, the girls have gotten far more powerful and are used to fighting much stronger enemies. Cue Curb-Stomp Battle.
- We Hardly Knew Ye: Combines herself into a Yokubaal in episode 16, but is promptly killed off without much of a fight thanks to interference from Haa-chan.
Gamettsu
Voiced by: Joji Nakata
A humanoid turtle of the Dark Magicians and the third general to face the Pretty Cure.
- Blood Knight:
- He likes fighting up close and personal and considers the Pretty Cure to be Worthy Opponents, even going so far as to criticize them when they fail to meet his expectations. This comes to a head in episode 18, when he personally fights the Precure at his best and specifically challenges their Ruby form. Then, when they defeat him at his full power, he truly acknowledges their own strength and notes that he has no regrets losing to them a final time.
- Sparda exploits this facet of his personality after his revival. She notes that there is a third Pretty Cure, and points out that her power is greater than Miracle's and Magical's. This gets him fired up for another great battle and he eagerly goes after Felice.
- Bring It: Does the "hand flip" gesture in Episode 15.
- Brought Down to Badass: Even as a turtle, he still wails on sharks many times his size!
- Go Out with a Smile: His last gesture before being purified was to smile and acknowledge Miracle and Magical's power to feel for others.
- Honor Before Reason: After he swipes the Garnet Linkle Stone, he offers to give it back to him as long as they can defeat him in battle.
- I Fight for the Strongest Side!: Gamettsu believes Dokurokushe's black magic is the greatest power in the universe, and therefore is the wizard most deserving of his allegiance.
- Meaningful Name: His name contains a corruption of "kame", meaning turtle.
- Power Limiter: His shell turns out to be one.
- Reptiles Are Abhorrent: He is based off of turtles, and he is in league with the villains.
- This Was His True Form: After he is defeated by the Precure, he reverts back to being a harmless turtle.
- Villainous Valor: Even as the Precure gain a Heroic Second Wind, turn the battle around, and put him on the receiving end of their finisher, he continues fighting until the very end.
- Villain Respect: Downplayed regarding Haa-chan. Gamettsu sees her as weak and insignificant, but is still impressed by how she stands up to him for the Cures' sake. He later upgrades it into a much greater form when he learns that she is the third and stronger Pretty Cure.
- Would Hurt a Child: He has no problems fighting the Precure (who are only about 14 years of age). He kicks it up a notch by threatening to attack Haa-chan when she tries to stop him from finishing off the Precure, first by powering through her, then by breathing on her, and finally by trying to punch her with his fist.
Never Ending Chaos
The main antagonists in the second-half of the series. In General
Tropes applying to the other villains:
- Evil Counterpart: To the Linkle Stones. Like the Emerald, Deusmast is at the center. Surrounding him are his servants, the inner circle consisting of the four most powerful and the outer consisting of the lesser ones. This is much like how the primary Linkle Stones surround the Emerald while the support stones in turn surround them.
- Kick the Dog: All four of them are guilty of insulting or otherwise putting down the Pretty Cure in some way. Labut dismisses their magic as inferior to his mugic, Shakince throws Chikurun to the ground when he believes the fairy is becoming emotionally attached to the girls, Benigyo talks down about the holidays, and Orba dismisses the dark magicians as being mere pawns in his plan.
- Sealed Evil in a Can: All of them were sealed away in the backstory by Mother Rapapa. Their cans vary from being to being: Labut was sealed within a lamp, Shakince was sealed in a stone, and Benigyo was sealed in a Dogu statue. Various other kinds of cans were featured for the others.
- Underestimating Badassery: Only Orba seems to take the Cures seriously at first. The others are too confident in their powers to think the Cures are a threat. Orba ultimately gets in on the underestimating when he dismisses the dark magicians and witnesses the So Last Season Yokubarl defeat his Donyokubarl.
- Wrong Context Magic: They don't use magic, instead claiming to use an alternate power that is rendered in Japanese as muho (with maho being the Japanese word for regular magic). Fansubs have rendered this a "mugic".
Deusmast
Voiced by: Naoki Tatsuta (blue orb), Sho Hayami (green orb), Kikuko Inoue (orange orb) and Noriaki Sugiyama (pink orb)
- Big Bad: Of Maho's second half, Deusmast plans to drive both worlds into never-ending chaos.
- Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: After Kushi's death from the first half of Maho, Deusmast takes his Big Bad spot, albeit he is far different to him in some ways. Unlike Kushi who is a former human turned skeleton after overusing dark magic, Deusmast is a God Is Evil Eldritch Abomination whose form is literally made out of darkness with its "eyes" comprised of four colour-coded magic circles that were the forms of the four beings who serve him. Whereas Kushi is an Orcus on His Throne who spent most of his time being a Non-Action Big Bad before Episodes 20 and 21, Deusmast actively is the threat throughout the rest of the series.
- Eye Scream: His last form has a case of pupula duplex.
- Eldritch Abomination: His appearance takes the form of a giant black and white thing in a humanoid shape covered in red lines. Flashbacks show him as being made completely out of cloudy darkness.
- Eye Motifs: Very prominent motif, with it being on several magic circles and the heads of the Donyokubaaru, as examples.
- Fusion Dance: In the end, Deusmast is this, one of the the members of Never Ending Chaos, who in turn are physical manifestations of his physical power.
- God Is Evil: He's a borderline divine entity with deus in his name.
- Sinister Silhouettes: Before being shown in full, he's usually represented as an immense shadow.
Labut
Voiced by: Naoki Tatsuta
- Affably Evil: He is polite even when dealing with the Pretty Cure, and talks in a down-to-earth manner.
- Blow You Away: To an extent; he flies on a cloud, some of his attacks appear to be wind gusts, and when he gets big, his fists blow people away through air displacement.
- The Dragon: He has confirmed himself to be the servant to a powerful evil being called Deusmast, and he is quite powerful, able to bring back Yamoh from just his tail to creating nigh-impenetrable barriers out of darkness with next to no effort.
- Fat Bastard: A genie with the physique and moves of a sumo wrestler.
- Genie in a Bottle: Invoked with his appearance and being sealed in a lamp.
- Killed Off for Real: He is taken out of the picture by the Pretty Cure in episode 31. Benigyo herself points out that she could no longer sense him. This is subverted when, in episode 47, Deusmast brings him back with Shakince and Orba.
- Lazy Bum: To an extent, he really would rather lie about all day.
- Meaningful Name: His name comes from the word "labradorite" (ラブラドライト raburadoraito)
- Other meanings inclube "taboo" and "arab" (where the genie originates from)
- No-Sell: He shrugs a Ruby Passionale from Cures Miracle and Magical with little effort, and, in his One-Winged Angel form, he negates everything the girls throw at him, including Cure Felice's own powerful attacks.
- One-Winged Angel: Downplayed in that he really doesn't change his form other than greatly increasing his size during episode 31. It does make it easier for him to fight the Pretty Cure, and he initially curbstomps them in this form.
- Punch-Clock Villain: He has stated that it is his job to get rid of those who would conceivably get in the way of his master, Deusmast. He doesn't seem to have anything against the Cures personally, even when they drive him off.
- Reality Warper: He can do almost anything, from bringing back the dead to traversing spaces that are normally impassable.
- Unskilled, but Strong: Brings up this argument when comparing the magic the Pretty Cure use to the "mugic" he uses. He comments that mugic can bend reality without a shred of study, unlike magic which requires extensive training to use effectively.
Shakince
Voiced by: Sho Hayami
- Blow You Away: Shows off quite a bit of wind powers.
- Jerkass Has a Point: In episode 38, he assumes the reason to pumpkin bird is fleeing from the girls is because it actually despises being chased. An earlier reaction that looked like horror from it supported this claim. He was incorrect in that the bird actually enjoys its role, but he gets points for having a technically valid point when he calls the girls out.
- Killed Off for Real: He is eliminated by the Pretty Cure in episode 41. As with Labut, Benigyo becomes unable to sense him after his death. This is subverted in episode 47 when Deusmast brings him back with Labut and Orba.
- Make My Monster Grow: He uses his power to greatly increase his own size in his final battle with the Cures.
- Meaningful Name: His name comes from the word for sandstone (砂金石 sakin'ishi)
- Tengu: His design is based on one, though he lacks bird features or a long nose. He does have a leaf fan in his first appearence.
- Swallow the Key: A variation. In his giant form, he swallows the Cures' Linkle Stones, keeping them from transforming. Chikurun gets them back.
- Verbal Tic: He ends his sentences with "Teki."
Benigyo
Voiced by: Kikuko Inoue
- Big Red Devil: Her design is meant to evoke this trope.
- Gyaru Girl: She at least has the speech patterns.
- Holy Halo: It's not holy, but she does have a halo behind her head all the time.
- Horned Humanoid: She has a pair of red horns sticking out of her pink hair, which fits with her devil motif.
- Like Is, Like, a Comma: She has a tendency to say "like" when sticking to a comma would be sufficient.
- Meaningful Name: Benigyo's name comes from the word for carnelian (紅玉髄 benigyokuzui).
- Stripperiffic: All she really wears is a red bikini with gauntlets, boots, jewelry, and a red ring floating behind her.
- Youkai: Word of God says that the raijin is her motif.
Orba
Voiced by: Noriaki Sugiyama
Another servant of Deusmast. His polite demeanor hides a cunning and cruel mind.
- Affably Evil: He is genuinely polite and speaks in a well-mannered way. This is despite him trying to eliminate the Pretty Cure and usher in an age of chaos.
- Fashionable Asymmetry: His One-Winged Angel form has white angelic wings on one side, and black crow wings on the other.
- Four Eyes, Zero Soul: He wears glasses, but he is in league with Benigyo, Shakince, and Labut, and he serves under the second Big Bad, Deusmast. He also casually blackmails Chikurun into working for him.
- The Glasses Come Off: When he enters his One Winged Angel form, he discards his glasses.
- Knight of Cerebus: Downplayed example. He takes the Cures far more seriously than the other villains, and is consequently more threatening. Ironically, he is the third of Deusmast's followers to die.
- The Man Behind the Man: Everything in the story was because of his planning. Just before he was sealed in the backstory, he took a secret to dark magic and scattered it across the world. It was then just a matter of time before someone went looking for those pieces and put them back together. Their use would allow him and his fellows to break free from their prisons.
- Meaningful Name: His name comes from the word "opal" (オパール opāru)
- One-Winged Angel: He takes on a half-angelic and half-demonic form in episode 45.
- Power Gives You Wings: When he goes One-Winged Angel, his new form grows a pair of wings from the power he's channeling.
- Villainous Breakdown: He completely flips out when Batty's Fusion Danced Yokubarl beats his Donyokubarl in episode 45.
- Villain Takes an Interest: He's the only one to take the Cures seriously, he dispatches a spy to learn more about them, and even tries to abduct Mofurun just to see what she is.
- Xanatos Speed Chess: Whenever a gambit goes awry, he always launched another move that would take him to a win. He didn't take into account that Chikurun would turn on him, but it didn't matter anyway since he already had what he wanted. He didn't take into account Batty pulling a heel-face turn and summoning a Yokubal that defeated his Donyokubal and hen being forced to take an Extreme Rainbow to the face, but he got the last laugh anyway since he channeled the last of his power into the tome and scattered it as a wave that would free his remaining fellows even as he dies.
Yokubaaru/Super Yokubaaru/Donyokubaaru
Yokubaaru/Super Yokubaaru/Donyokubaaru
Voiced by: Takahiro Shimada (Yokubaaru/Super Yokubaaru), Shōta Yamamoto (Donyokubaaru)
The monsters the villains summon when they fuse with two or more objects. The Dark Magicians later develop a stronger variant called the Super Yokubaaru, which are stronger than their regular counterparts. The generals of Never Ending Chaos later make an even more powerful variant called Donyokubaaru.- Forced Transformation: Living creatures are not immune to being turned into one of these things, but doing so does not completely overwrite their mind, allowing them to try and keep themselves from hurting others.
- Monster of the Week: Of the series. They appear Once an Episode and are made from various things.
- Meaningful Name: Their names are taken from the Japanese verb "yokubaru", meaning to covet or lust. Interesting, the baaru (バール) part can be translates to Baal, a Christian demon who has been depicted as a cat, man, and toad's head on a set of spider legs. While probably coincidental, some of these parts do coincide with the villains, eg. Sparda with the spider legs, Yamoh/Gamettsu as the toad, Batty/Dokurokushe's more human appearances representing the man. The cat seems to be represented by the Magic School, which has a subtle but still very present black cat motif.
- Pokémon Speak: They say "YOKUBAARUUUU!" more often than not, but this is downplayed since they mix in words of acknowledgment, such as "Aye!" and "Roger!" when given specific orders from whoever summoned them.
