Homunculi Emblem

Man-made bioweapons commanded and controlled by Singularity. Originally, they were intended to stand against the forces of Paradiso and Inferno. Now they aim to erase the Multiverse from existence and collapse it into a singular Alphaverse.

  • Alien Blood: They have cyan blood.
  • Ambiguous Robots: Homunculi blend the line between Organic Technology and Mechanical Lifeforms. They're said to be semi-human bioweapons and are manufactured in "bioplants", yet are composed of nanotechnology and wield energy weapons, and function as mindless automata controlled telepathically by Singularity, an artificial intelligence.
  • Angels, Devils and Squid: They're the Squid, and many of the designs, such as Iridescent, invoke sea life.
  • Apocalypse How: Class Z. Singularity wants to rule over one single reality and therefore wants all the different worlds that exist in the Trinity of Reality, and the Trinity itself, to be merged together (in effect destroying them).
  • Blob Monster: While made of nanomachines, in practice they're made of turquoise goo that reshapes itself into ambulatory bodies. Large enemies have Jiggle Physics when struck, even on parts that look like rigid armor, and the Floccus can even "splash" themselves into the ground to try to catch Bayonetta in it.
  • Body of Bodies: Any homunculi greater in size than a Stratus Unit is just multiple bodies melded together, first seen when they amass to form a Floccus. Subsequently, all the unarmored body parts have textures showing overlapped shoulders and heads.
  • Clarke's Third Law: They're technological creations advanced enough to match the capabilities of Inferno and Paradiso. In particular, they're teleported into battle by Singularity using holographic scrolls in a way that emulates Summon Magic.
  • Corrupted Character Copy: The way they meld together to build bigger structures, especially the mobile weaponry like the Cavum, is akin to the titular The Wonderful 101 whose primary ability was configuring masses of people into giant weapons. The Perlucidus mass possessing people is like a dark version of "Wonder-Eyes" being used to empower and recruit civilians to increase numbers and help fight. Taken this way, the homunculi are essentially the Bad Future Wonderful 100 the GEATHJERK traveled back in time to prevent from being born.
  • Expy: Extra-dimensional invaders with chitin-like armor who corrupt the environment around them will their mere presence? Are we talking about Homunculi or Chimeras?
  • Fog of Doom: They produce a thick fog called the Clouds of Erasure that breaks down reality, forming barriers throughout the levels.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Mankind finally manages to create weapons that can stand against Inferno and Paradiso. Of course, the Alphaverse turn on them.
  • Green and Mean: Their primary color is greenish tint, as opposed to angels' golden and demons' red/black, and they're really vicious universe wipers.
  • Hive Mind: The individual Homunculi have no free will of their own and are non-sapient beings telepathically commanded and deployed by Singularity.
  • Light Is Not Good: Most of them have a bit of a light theme and are more white and teal. A number of them also draw motifs from Vedic deities. Yet, they are the most destructive villains seen in the franchise.
  • Mini-Game: Most of the boss Homunculi save for Stratocumulus are never fought directly and are only fought in mini-game format. If they don't the fight will often lock you to certain Demons instead.
  • Muggles Do It Better: An incredibly dark example. Singularity and the Homunculus were born entirely from human technology without any magic involved yet managed to bring about genocide on multiversal scale and push Bayonetta to the very brink, far surpassing any damage the residents of Paradisio and Inferno have ever caused. By the end of the game, having absorbed the power of many worlds and Bayonettas, Singularity managed to ascend to a level of power comparable, if not outright superior to Physical Gods such as Jubileus and Aesir.
  • Mythical Motifs: They invoke strong Hindu and Buddhist imagery and themes, with lotus flowers appearing prominently in their designs and their goal of destruction and rebirth.
  • Nanomachine: Nanomachines have replaced and augmented all functions of the human body, turning them into the mindless killing machines seen in the game. Notably, the entity controlling them is named after The Singularity.
  • No-Sell: They are immune to conventional weaponry, something that various military factions find out the hard way. While missiles and other conventional weapons do kill them in some scenes, this is only when Jeanne is using the weapons and presumably infusing them with some magic.
  • Our Homunculi Are Different: Instead of alchemy creations, they are nanotech bioweapons that can replicate nearly any body part imaginable. But they aren't truly alive and are more like machines than anything else. And some of them don't even look like people!
  • Outside-Context Problem: They are partially human but not exactly, and despite resemblances, they aren't angel or demon either. They're something wholly new in the Trinity of Realities. Their Hindu/Buddhist imagery only reaffirms this, as creatures with no connection to the Christianity-inspired dichotomy of Paradiso and Inferno.
  • Remote Body: There is no mind within them, they're all remotely controlled by Singularity as extensions of his body, signified by a ribbon of light trailing from the more basic units. Singularity can also project a face to speak through them.
  • Spell Book: The scroll that introduces each homunculus also serves as a summoning scroll that Singularity can use to bring more homunculi into the fight, such as during the Hopeless Boss Fight intro where he summons a Cumulonimbus to counter Bayonetta's Gomorrah.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: They replace the angels as the major enemy class of the third game. This is a plot point because Bayonetta's demon contracts don't apply to them, forcing her to employ new techniques like Demon Slave and Demon Masquerade so her contracted demons will be forced to finish them off.
  • Theme Naming: They're all named after types of clouds.
  • Was Once a Man: The Stratuses (and by extension all other Homunculi) are implied to be the humans of the Alphaverse (and possibly other universes), who were forced to undergo Unwilling Roboticization by Singularity when he conquered it to become his mindless army.

Singularity Definition

Voiced by: Chris Cox (EN), Toshihiko Seki (JP)

The Artificial Human known as "Singularity" is the mastermind behind the Homunculi attacks and the deadliest foe Bayonetta faced in her career. After being accidentially created in an artificial body parts plant and eradicating his home universe, he discovered the secrets of the multiverse and seeks to merge all the universes into one to absorb their power and become a god.
  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: One of his attacks in his Definition form has him lash out with his claws and send out shockwaves similar to an attack used by Strider.
  • Achilles' Heel: His Phenomenal Affirmation naturally means almost nothing can actually escape being killed by him, save for Arch-Eve Origin (the player Bayonetta), who is somehow immune and is thus the only person who could actually fight him on reasonable terms.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Of a biological and accidental sort. This is Singularity's true form - in what he would later call the Alphaverse, Singularity was born from an anomaly that occurred in a production plant that produced artificial body parts, creating a completely self aware artificial human. He then began to mass produce the Homunculi to rebel against his masters and conquer/unite the multiverse as a singular domain.
  • Allegorical Character: Of human greed and ambition. He's a cybernetic entity developed by Muggles rather than a spiritual being, yet is a sociopathic madman who unleashes destruction on a level exceeding those of Paradiso and Inferno by blowing up thousands of universes, akin to how man destroys nature, religion and morals out of a desire for complete control. His declaration of his multiverse-wide destruction as the "one truth" and the Homunculi's Mythical Motifs can also represent the perversion of religion into self-serving terrorist cults who claim that they know "the one truth" (especially those based on Bhuddism or Hinduism like the Aum Shinrikyo) and man's ability to warp truth and information through spreading falsehoods.
  • All There in the Manual: His true nature as an AI created via a artificial human body and the reason why he seeks to conquer the multiverse (splitting the Realm of Chaos into a multiverse weakened it, and he wants this power regained to ensure his own eternal survival) is only revealed in the character bios of the game itself, and not in any cutscenes. At most, some of his dialog hints at his motives, such as stating that ending all other life will mean the beginning of his own.
  • Ambiguous Situation: At one point in the game, Jeanne thinks back to a conversation she had with Viola about Sigurd and Singularity. Viola starts remarking "you see, Dr. Sigurd and Singularity are-" but the scene cuts off there, leaving it unclear what she was going to say. That Singularity during the story has a body that looks identical to Dr. Sigurd could suggest he is actually a variant of him somehow, despite his artificial origin. That Bayonetta and Viola at first think the real Dr. Sigurd is a variant of Singularity sacrificed to act as a control system for the Homunculi could support this idea (and they only realize the truth when they see his ID card), but it remains unknown if this is truly the case.
  • Arch-Enemy: The Arch-Eve Origin Bayonetta is this for him like John Connor is to for Skynet. On top of being the only person capable of putting up a legitimate resistance against him, he also seeks to kill and absorb her for the immense power she possesses. Bayonetta on the other hand, doesn't see him in the same personal way like she would with Baldr or Loptr.
  • Artificial Human: Singularity is essentially this - an AI who fashioned a humanoid artificial body for himself that's convincingly part-organic.
  • Badass Cape: Wears one in his Definition form that looks to be made of clouds.
  • Bad Boss: In one of the cutscenes right after backstabbing Jeanne, he refers to the Homunculi as if they were his children and intended replacement for humanity. Yet throughout the story, he has no qualms in letting any of his Homunculi die or get dragged to Inferno, chiding them as "mere vessels" in turn, and treats them like his extensions and weapons that they are.
  • Barrier Warrior: One attack in his Definition form has him surround himself in a barrier for protection. The barrier can only be destroyed via use of Bayonetta's Demon Slave ability.
  • Big Bad: The main and only antagonist of Bayonetta 3, if you consider all of the Homunculi non-sentient weapons rather than individuals. Bayonetta Origins has him return as the main antagonist of Jeanne's story.
  • Bishōnen Line: The first phase of its fight, Singularity Chaos, is a hulking kaiju-like monster. The second phase, Singularity Balance, becomes more humanoid but retains monstrous characteristics. Its final and strongest form, Singularity Definition, is the smallest and most human-looking.
  • Bring It: Is fond of using the hand motion version as a silent gesture of his supreme confidence, as well as a way to mock Arch Eve Origin Bayonetta. Notably he does it while controlling Pyrocumulus after killing and absorbing Bayonetta β2, and again when facing the mortally injured Arch Eve Origin Bayonetta in the alternate Manhattan.
  • Brought Down to Badass: His return in Bayonetta Origins sees him seemingly stripped of most of his Reality Warper powers, forcing him to use Faerie magic to compensate. He seeks to kill Cereza to regain his powers. That said, he's still pretty powerful to where it took both Cereza and Jeanne to bring him down for good, with Cereza having to use the Left Eye of Darkness to break free of his petrification and restrain him with Jeanne's help for Charles to finish off.
  • The Chessmaster: After arriving at Arch eve Origin Bayonetta's universe, he kills the real Dr. Sigurd and uses his body to control the Homunculi and impersonates him, waiting for Jeanne to "rescue" him from the Homunculi. He then has Jeanne and Bayonetta use the Chaos Gears to open a portal to the Alphaverse and once Bayonetta and Viola are inside, he kills Jeanne and traps Viola and Bayonetta in the Alphaverse, effectively removing the two biggest obstacles to his plans and leaving him free to absorb the energy from the universes he's destroyed. His plan is only thwarted by Luka, who manages to gain control of his newfound faerie powers and opens the portal back to Singularity’s world for the final showdown.
  • Combat Stilettos: His Balance and Definition forms wear heels.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: To Loptr from Bayonetta 2. On paper, the two are very similar in voice, personality, mannerisms, abilities, fighting style, and motivations. There are several differences between them, however. Loptr is the evil, Literal Split Personality of an ancient god while Singularity is a rogue AI who fashioned himself a human body. Loptr fights with magic while Singularity uses nanomachines. Loptr operated in the shadows and only took direct action halfway into the story while Singularity's threat is known to Bayonetta from the outset and his presence is felt throughout the story. Loptr wanted to simply take over the World of Chaos while Singularity seeks to unite all realities into one for him to rule. While Loptr's defeat is cathartic and extremely humiliating in his viewpoint, the entire battle against Singularity is a grueling, uphill battle that results in Bayonetta dying, and he's one of the few Bayonetta villains who's played as dead serious as possible.
  • Creepy Monotone: Singularity rarely raises his voice beyond an eerily calm tone. The moment he loses this is a sign his Reality Warper powers are starting to fail.
  • Cyber Cyclops: He's a rogue A.I given sentience who fashioned himself a body and his Definition form has one giant eye for a face.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of the Invincible Villain and The Fatalist. Thanks to his Phenomenal Affirmation power allowing him to control fate itself, Singularity has managed to destroy over 2000 universes as well as kill and absorb multiple variants of Bayonetta. However, his overreliance on this ability has made him incredibly arrogant to the point that he believes his victory is all but a predetermined fact. And because he's so used to rigging the game with his powers, he naturally never considers the possibility he could actually lose and thus has no plan for when things inevitably go wrong. This ultimately becomes his undoing in the final battle where Bayonetta's status as the Arch Eve Origin causes his power over reality to come undone, causing him to face unexpected variables such as Arch Eve Origin Bayonetta freeing the souls of the other variants of her he's absorbed, Bayonettas 1 and 2 arriving to aid Arch Eve Origin Bayonetta and the three of them merging together, or Luka arriving with full control of his Faerie powers. Luka outright spells it out that enough willpower can change anything, even fate itself.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: His Signature Move in his Definition form is to create a clone of himself to fight alongside him.
  • Double Entendre: Albeit in a Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness way. After Arch-Pyrocumulus is defeated, Singularity offers a We Will Meet Again to Arch Eve Origin, then admits that "you don't believe in delayed gratification".
  • Establishing Character Moment: Doubling as a Final Boss Preview. The prologue has a version of Bayonetta (Viola's biological mother) facing off against him only to killed, giving the audience a glimpse of his sheer power. Said battle is recreated for the final boss fight.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: As a rogue AI given sentience and operating on pure logic, concepts such as friendship, trust, and camaraderie are foreign and illogical to him. In Bayonetta Origins, he makes several attempts to dissuade Jeanne from interfering with his plan to absorb Cereza's power, even showing her a glimpse of her death in Bayonetta 3 to break her spirit. Instead, it only reinforces her determination to save Cereza.
  • Evil Counterpart: It's not obvious at first, but Singularity is another dark mirror to Cereza. His campaign of genocide against the Arch-Eves of the multiverse is a sick twist on her angel exterminations in the previous two games. He is exactly as arrogant and sadistic as Bayonetta—she loves murdering angels to the point of near-orgasmic bliss in the first game, and he takes great pleasure in killing her other selves as well as alternate Jeannes. Singularity's summon powers exceed Bayonetta's, as he doesn't have to fear any Homunculi going out of control and he can upgrade and reshape them to his liking. His Balance form fights with two giant hands that he can use in combat the way Bayonetta controls her Wicked Weaves, with the apparatus attached to it playing a similar function to her Demon Masquerades. Singularity Definition also walks on exaggerated stilleto heels, uses many of her own martial arts and Dance Battler attacks, and can summon monsters to fight alongside him in the same manner as her Demon Slave summons. Unlike her, though, he lacks any redeeming qualities such as her love of children. Bayonetta may have enjoyed killing off the angels but they were universally trying to enslave or wipe out humanity.
  • Evil Is Petty: In Alternate Paris, he has his Perlucidus Homunculi possess the entire French military... and has them dance in front of Bayonetta in an obvious mockery of her Demon Slave dances. He has no reason to do this bar trying to piss off Bayonetta either; his Homunculi army is already strong enough to crush any military flat without having to use Perlucidus modules to possess them.
  • Expy: He's essentially what happens when Skynet takes destruction to an omniversal scale rather than being confined to a single planet. Both of them are Artificial Intelligence who had gone rogue and committed a genocidal war against all of humanity that wiped almost all of them out (although Singularity's conquest is omniversal unlike Skynet's). The resistance leader fighting him in Bayonetta 3's prologue is also called Connor Sigurd (an Expy of John Connor), and Bayonetta Origins sees him traveling to Cereza's childhood to off her when she's still young after his defeat, just like how Skynet deployed the Terminator T-800 against a young John Connor as an attempt to eradicate him before he can set up a rebellion. Both entities also end up being locked in a Stable Time Loop where their Evil Plans will always fail, and even if they do kill Bayonetta and John Connor respectively, their victory rings hollow.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: As much as he hates to admit it, his goal of eradicating the Arch-Eve Origin and collapsing the entire Multiverse into a Singularity always ends up in failure, because his Phenomenal Affirmation doesn't work on her. He fails to defeat Arch-Eve Origin Cereza both as an adult and as a child (the latter thanks to Jeanne and Cereza's own Left Eye of Darkness which activated even when she's supposedly sealed), cementing his omniversal conquest as a doomed cause thanks to the one opponent he can't simply rig himself through.
  • Fatal Flaw:
    • A lethal cocktail of ego, sadism, and fatalism. Because of his Reality Warper powers, Singularity believes that his actions are an immutable truth and thus, his victory is set in stone. So naturally, he never considers the possibility that he could actually lose. Also, his sheer arrogance causes him to toy with his opponents rather than finish them outright just to flaunt his power. Even as the final battle goes completely off the rails and he's forced to confront unexpected variables such as Arch Eve Origin Bayonetta freeing the souls of the other variants of her he's absorbed, Bayonettas 1 and 2 arriving to aid Arch Eve Origin Bayonetta and the three of them merging together, or Luka arriving with full control of his Faerie powers, Singularity is firmly convinced that he's still in control and it's just a momentary setback. This ultimately leads to his undoing as Bayonetta and her allies manage to weaken him enough for her to finish him off. Luka spells it out for him:
Luka: When you fight for what you believe, you can change anything.
    • His return in Bayonetta Origins shows that he has learned nothing from his previous defeat. Despite barely surviving the final battle in 3 and being significantly weaker than before, he's still convinced he can turn things around, dismissing his previous defeat as a "slight miscalculation". And rather than kill Jeanne from the outset like he did in 3, he instead tries to intimidate her into abandoning Cereza and his sadism has him try to kill Charles in a slow and deliberate manner just to torment Jeanne. Like before, this ends up being his downfall as Cereza is able to break free from his spell and she and Jeanne are able to bring him down once and for all, while he's effectively locked in a Stable Time Loop where his multiversal conquest will always fail.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Singularity is capable of acting polite and refined, but it always carries a condescending edge to it and is undercut by his sheer ruthlessness and sadism. When facing off against the Bayonettas in Alternate China, he attempts to give them False Reassurance, telling them death is merely a gate rather than a final destination. When posing as Dr. Sigurd, he acts polite and kind towards Jeanne, even telling him he enjoyed their time together. He says this after he kills her by stabbing her in the back. He extends this attitude towards Jeanne's younger self in Origins, constantly calling her his friend, addressing her by her name, and making several attempts to dissuade her from rescuing Cereza, stating he can't bear to watch her die again, but it doesn't stop him from trying to kill her or trying to break her spirit by showing her a glimpse of her death.
  • Final Boss: Of Bayonetta 3 and of Cereza’s saga.
  • Final Boss, New Dimension: During the final battle, he briefly warps the battlefield into a fractal pattern. His boss fight in Bayonetta Origins takes place in a pocket dimension he created.
  • Final Boss Preview: The opening sequence of the game sees a variant of Bayonetta (In her appearance from Bayonetta 1) facing off with a shadowy version of Singularity in a fight that mirrors one of the phases that Arch Eve Origin Bayonetta would face in the Final Battle, including a sequence of playing as Gomorrah, and a Controllable Helplessness phase of a heavily injured Bayonetta trying to make a defiant Last Stand to Singularity, with the same dialogue to boot. This even includes the following cutscene being drastically similar, albeit with Viola attacking Singularity and getting intercepted by his clone much sooner this time in an attempt to prevent him from crushing Arch Eve Origin Bayonetta to death like he did to her universe's Bayonetta.
  • Flunky Boss:
    • As Singularity Balance, he will occasionally summon a Homunculi to aid him in battle in a similar manner to Bayonetta's Demon Slave ability. While the Homunculi will leave the battlefield after a short while, you get a Bewitchment for destroying one. Also, after taking enough damage, he will summon Cirrostratus & Cirrocumulus to tag in while he recovers.
    • In his boss fight in Origins Singularity will use his scrolls to summon projections of Affinities and Faeries such as the Jabberwock and Amádán Dubh, described as the fear in Cereza's heart made manifest.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Downplayed as he was an "anomaly" to begin with, just not a powerful one. He started life as a artificial intelligence spontaneously born from a manufactured body in what was an otherwise unremarkable production plant in his native world, only to eventually become a reality-warping Multiversal Conqueror who manages to be Bayonetta's most powerful opponent to date.
  • Glass Cannon: His Balance form is this compared to his Definition form. While his Balance form is quite fast despite the heavy armor and capable of damaging attacks, he doesn't have a lot of health compared to his Definiton form and he can be easily stunned by destroying his Power Fist, which is why he mainly fights from a distance and summons Homunculi to back him up.
  • Godhood Seeker: Singularity's goal is to merge all the universes into a singularity, absorbing the energy to attain godhood that surpasses the power of every other god and god-like being in the Trinity of Realities.
  • Ground Punch: One attack in his Balance and Definiton forms has him punch the ground and create a shockwave. Like all shockwave attacks in 3, this will stun Bayonetta if she gets hit.
  • Half-Truth: Jeanne's death which he shows her in a vision in Cereza and the Lost Demon indeed came to pass in Bayonetta 3, but he leaves out the fact that he is the one who murders her. This is also visually invoked via a cutscene: We see a page that shows Jeanne being impaled by Singularity in the same way he did in Bayonetta 3, but he himself is not shown on that same page.
  • Heads I Win, Tails You Lose: He always wins against almost all of the Arch-Eve variants he comes across and blows up their resident universes, racking up a total of 2,044 destroyed universes right before he's stopped. Even Arch-Eve Origin (player Bayonetta) can only do as much as to change the way her counterparts die, and cannot prevent them from getting killed and their universes destroyed at all. He also manages to successfully manipulate Jeanne and Bayonetta into opening the Alphaverse for him to seal the latter off and kill the former. Unlike Loptr, this is also played as hard as possible courtesy of his phenomenal affirmation ability ensuring all of his victims die rather than him beating them out in one-on-one battles like Loptr did to Bayonetta. He's only stopped because Arch-Eve Origin managed to both deny his Phenomenal Affirmation when he tries to use that on her and barely defeat him with the cost of her life.
  • Healing Factor: He is injured many times over the course of his Marathon Boss fight, indicated by cracks forming across his body. He then heals them just as many times by channeling extra energy through himself to seemingly be perfectly restored to health. However, this is over time shown to place ever increasing strain on him, as well as forcing him to discard more and more extra flesh and armor, and toward the end it is clear he is tiring. Winning against him involves Bayonetta getting enough opportunities and boosts to win this war of attrition to the point that he can no longer restore himself. Thus the cracks grow through his body unimpeded until he can no longer hold himself together and proceeds to explode. And then Bayonetta Origins reveals he survived even that, albeit severely weakened.
  • Hero Killer: He destroys every single Bayonetta variant before the Arch Eve Origin Bayonetta, along with alternate versions of Luka and Jeanne. He forced Luka and Bayonetta to go all out against him to kill him, and even then, he injured them gravely enough for them to die and be dragged down to Inferno shortly after his death.
  • Hijacked by Ganon: Downplayed as he doesn't exactly usurp the main Big Bad, but he returns in Bayonetta Origins as its True Final Boss and the Big Bad of Jeanne's scenario.
  • In Their Own Image: The drive behind him destroying thousands of universes is to collapse them into a singularity where he dominates all of existence. Put another way, in his words, he believes the purpose of all other life is to end so that his own can "begin."
  • Invincible Villain: His "phenomenal affirmation" ability boils down to him setting up future events in stone, thus making him completely undefeatable and allowing him to kill more than two thousand Bayonettas (and blow up their universes) unimpeded. It fails in front of Arch-Eve Origin a.k.a. the player's Bayonetta, though.
  • Kick the Dog: He has enough power at his disposal to just kill Jeanne in a straightforward fashion, but he chooses to stab her through the back while disguised as Dr. Sigurd seemingly out of sheer cruelty. When meeting Jeanne's younger self in Origins he shows her a glimpse of him killing her in an attempt to break her spirit, showing he clearly enjoyed killing her.
  • Kill and Replace: It's revealed that Singularity pulled this on Dr. Sigurd, impersonating him in order to strand Bayonetta and Viola in the "Alphaverse" while he kills Jeanne. He did this because Arch Eve Origin Bayonetta was a threat to him, and he needed a distraction to keep her away from his real body.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Any time he shows up, death and destruction follows, and he's one of the very few Bayonetta villains who is played as seriously as possible, devoid of any humiliating or cathartic moments even when being defeated. Even Loptr gets defeated and disposed of in a rather comedic way, while the final battle against Singularity is a grueling, uphill battle that ends up with Bayonetta dying, and its made very clear that had Arch-Eve Origin Bayonetta failed to defeat him, nobody else can. Bar the fight against Arch-Pyrocumulus, all of the fights against his stronger units are also devoid of any catharsis, have way more subdued climaxes than those dealt against the angels, and always ends up with that world's Arch-Eve killed and their universe destroyed.
  • Lack of Empathy: Scoffs at the mere idea of risking one's own life for someone else, viewing it as pointless and illogical. To Singularity, nothing matters except assuring his own eternal life and security.
  • Light Is Not Good: His later forms make him look more and more like a mystical, divine being, but he is the single most destructive villain in the entire franchise, wiping out over two thousand universes all by himself, mostly using troops that he personally controls.
  • Lightning Bruiser: In his Definition form, Singularity is incredibly swift, has quite a bit of health, and has an arsenal of powerful attacks at his disposal.
  • Laughably Evil: Despite being a vicious omnicidal madman who blown up over two thousand universes all by himself, he's still occasionally prone to hilarious chicanery like having his Strati pose as mannequins to ambush Bayonetta, getting dragged behind Jeanne's motorcycle while impersonating Dr. Sigurd, or possessing the entire French Military with Perlucidus Homunculi for the sake of having them burst into dance numbers to mock Bayonetta.
  • Make Wrong What Once Went Right: In true Skynet meets T-800 Model 101 fashion, after his defeat in Bayonetta 3, he goes to Cereza's childhood as a last-ditch attempt to off her. Thanks to Jeanne, it does not work.
  • Marathon Boss: Befitting his status as Bayonetta's final opponent within her overarching story, the final battle against him is long, with the fight against his various forms taking at least 20 minutes. Thankfully, each form counts as a separate battle, so it isn't one long endurance match.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • A singularity, in the terms of general relativity, is a point in which gravity is so intense that space-time itself becomes ill-defined. This matches with Singularity's plan to collapse reality into a single point that he alone defines.
    • A technological singularity is a hypothetical point where technological progression explodes to an uncontrollable degree, such as the creation of a constantly self-improving AI that surpasses humanity in intelligence. This fits with Singularity's backstory as an Artificial Human that grew in power to the point of becoming a universe-assimilating god.
  • Mind over Matter: In his Definition form, he has powerful telekinesis. One attack has him attempting to encase you in rubble before summoning a black hole to suck you in and deal damage.
  • Mirror Boss: Downplayed, but the clone he summons in his Definition form can use some of Bayonetta's signature moves such as the Afterburner Kick, Heel Slide, and Tetsunako stance.
  • Mutual Kill: While Luka and Bayonetta finally do enough damage for him to blow up, Singularity manages to crack Arch Eve Origin Bayonetta's Umbran Watch, grievously wounding her enough for her to collapse. When her Umbran Watch shatters, Gomorrah breaks free from her control and kills her, resulting in her soul to be dragged down to Inferno along with Luka moments after he dies.
  • Neck Lift: He performs this on Bayonetta β0 near the end of their fight, with his doppleganger doing the same to Viola when she tries to fight back while escaping. And later on in a History Repeats fashion, he once again does it to Arch-Eve Origin Bayonetta, his doppleganger also once again catching Viola in one of these when she tries to stop him from killing this Bayonetta.
  • Not Quite Dead: Origins reveals he survived his defeat in 3, albeit extremely weakened and even losing his Phenomenal Affirmation as a result of the final battle, and made his way to the world of Origins by tracing the faeries' magic through Cereza's memories. He seeks to kill Cereza and absorb her power to regain his power over reality and pick up where he left off.
  • Not So Above It All: Developing sentience has also caused Singularity to develop a sense of cruelty and Black Humor. He frequently appears to Bayonetta (as a hologram face) to taunt her, and later possesses the entire French army of Alternate Paris to bust out a Flashmob Dance-Off straight out of Thriller, just to take the piss out of her and the fact that she must perform a dance herself to trigger Demon Slave.
  • One-Hit Kill: When fighting his Definition form, if the Demon Slave is used too liberally against him, Singularity will kill the demon instantly with a single karate chop.
  • One-Winged Angel: In the final battle, he transforms into a Lovecraftian kaiju called Singularity Chaos, then he becomes a humanoid version decked out in Power Armor named Singularity Balance. And then he sheds the armor and assumes his most powerful form called Singularity Definition, a demonic-looking horned figure with a single eye.
  • Only Friend: Disturbingly, he seems to genuinely view Jeanne as this. When posing as Dr. Sigurd, after killing her, he tells her he genuinely enjoyed their brief time together. He extends this attitude towards Jeanne's younger self in Origins, constantly calling her his "brave friend", addressing her by her name, and making several attempts to dissuade her from rescuing Cereza that almost sound sincere, stating he can't bear to watch her die again. This even carries into the boss fight itself where Singularity seems to be holding back during the first phase and it's only when Jeanne makes it clear that she will save Cereza does he begin to fight seriously.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Singularity is just a name Viola and the heroes made up for him and not a name he goes by. When Bayonetta asks if he's Singularity, he replies with "If that's what you say I am." In Origins, he introduces himself as "He who affirms all phenomena", with the game itself labeling him as the "Affirmer of Phenomena".
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: As a visual representation of how weaker he is compared to his appearance in 3, Singluarity has a rather ghostly appearance in Origins, similar to his shadow form in 3's prolouge, with pieces of his body being transparent or outright missing. The narrator even describes him as a "fell specter".
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Even when discounting that all Homunculi are a part of a Hive Mind controlled by him, he himself has the power to ensure the destruction of any universe he targets.
  • Power of the Void: Fitting his namesake, two of his attacks in his Definition form have him conjure black holes to suck you in and deal damage.
  • Playing with Fire: One of his attacks in his Definition form has him create eruptions of flame in three random spots, similar to an attack used by Pyrocumulus.
  • Razor-Sharp Hand: His karate chop is so powerful it can instantly bisect organic demons.
  • Reality Warper: The crux of Singularity's power is warping reality to make himself virtually invulnerable, and he seeks to absorb enough power to do it on a multiversal scale. He increases it by killing and absorbing the most powerful person, an Arch Eve (usually a Bayonetta), of a given Realm of Chaos universe. At the height of his power as Singularity Definition, he has mastered the energies of various universes and warps the environment into a fractal pattern in his battle with Bayonetta.
  • Red Baron: His character bio calls him "The Crafted Tyrant". Origins calls him the "Affirmer of Phenomena".
  • Renaissance Man: The Homunculi's central A.I., leader, commander, mole, strategist, R&D, weapon manufacturer, troops and a veritable combatant on his own, all in a single entity.
  • Sadist: Despite his claims to the contrary, it's made repeatedly apparent that Singularity enjoys the destruction and suffering he causes. He constantly taunts Bayonetta throughout the game, at one point possessing the entire French Military (to make them do a dance number) as well as Alternate Paris Rosa and Bayonetta, knowing she'll be forced to kill them. During the final battle, he has his doppelganger restrain Viola and force her to watch as he attempts to kill Bayonetta in a repeat of him killing Bayonetta β0, her biological mother. His sadism carries over into his boss fight in Bayonetta Origins where he can create projections of enemies Cereza has fought, described as the fear and pain in Cereza's heart. Later on, he attempts to kill Charles in a slow and painful manner in front of Jeanne.
  • Serial Killer: On a multiversal scale. He has been systematically murdering every version of Bayonetta across the Multiverse and absorbing their souls and power to grow in strength. Since murdering a universe's Arch-Eve results in its entropy, he also kills an astronomical number of people in the process.
  • Shock and Awe: One of his new attacks in his boss fight in Origins has him call down bolts of lightning.
  • Slasher Smile: He gives one while possessing Alternate Paris Bayonetta, questioning Arch Eve Origin Bayonetta over what she could do to save her when he already knows the answer: killing her.
  • Smug Super: Spends a good chunk of the game taunting Bayonetta. Given that he managed to kill virtually every Bayonetta across the Multiverse because he literally can't lose against them, he has more than enough power to back up his arrogance.
  • Stable Time Loop: Courtesy of his failure to kill young Cereza in Bayonetta: Origins, he's effectively locked in one of these and is doomed to fail no matter what.
  • Storm of Blades: One of his signature attacks as Singularity Definition is to surround Bayonetta with a circle of spears before launching them at her.
  • This Cannot Be!:
    • Has a prolonged reaction like this as his fight with Arch Eve Origin Bayonetta progresses and he finds this "unforeseen variable" is causing his mastery of reality to slip and be undone. In particular, he is at a loss when the main Bayonettas from the first and second games show up in the flesh, as he knows he destroyed them and their worlds long ago. And his last words upon dying are him howling in disbelief that his mastery over reality could be undone.
Singularity: This... is unfathomable! My phenomena... immutable truth... challenged and denied!
    • Likewise, his defeat in Origins has him once again in complete shock that he could be bested yet again.
  • Tombstone Teeth: Singularity Chaos has a large mouth with block-shaped teeth, contrasting Sin Gomorrah's mouth full of fangs.
  • Too Clever by Half: Singularity is incredibly cunning and has the power to back up his intelligence, but he is incredibly arrogant and overestimates himself while underestimating his opponents.
  • True Final Boss: After completing the main story of Bayonetta Origins, a secret chapter focusing on Jeanne becomes available, where she, with the help of the demon who's now possessing her doll Charles, has to face off against the "Affirmer of Phenomena" (AKA Singularity), who captured Cereza in an attempt to kill her to reacquire his lost Phenomenal Affirmation.
  • Viler New Villain: Very much so. Loptr might be an order-hungry maniac who instigated a brutal clan war between the Lumen Sages and the Umbra Witches, corrupted Father Baldr after his death and seeks to rule over the universe as its only god, but nowhere is he indicated to be a mass annihilator of life on a multiversal scale.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: There's no need to explain how this omnicidal madman showing up in a Lighter and Softer spin-off about Cereza's childhood (where the worst villains before him only go as far as staging a coup) is going to plunge the atmosphere into a very sudden deep, dark dive.
  • Voice of the Legion: Outside of when he's masquerading as Dr. Sigurd, Singularity's voice is heavily distorted to the point that you'll need subtitles on to understand what he's saying.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's nearly impossible to talk about Singularity without spoiling some of the game's biggest twists. And that's not to mention his appearance in Origins, where his entire role in the game is kept to Jeanne's Tale, which can only be accessed after beating the main story.
  • Winds of Destiny, Change!: As part of his Reality Warper powers, his signature ability is his "Phenomenal Affirmation", which in layman's terms, gives him the ability to control fate itself and guide the future towards an outcome that he desires. This mastery of reality is what Singularity considers his "immutable truth". This allows him to systematically kill and absorb over two thousand Bayonetta variants across the multiverse and in the process, destroy their universes completely unresisted. This ability is shown during the final boss fight, which is a near shot-for-shot recreation of the fight with him in the prologue. The only weakness it has is that it can be countered by someone whose will is strong enough to overturn fate itself, namely the Arch-Eve Origin a.k.a the player Bayonetta, hence his obsession in trying to kill her at all costs. Her influence causes Singularity's Phenomenal Affirmation to be undone, causing things like her freeing the souls of the other Bayonetta variants he absorbed, the Bayonettas from the first and second game arriving to assist her even though he destroyed their worlds long ago, and the three of them fusing together.
  • World's Strongest Man: After absorbing the energy from all the worlds he's destroyed and evolving to his Definition form, Singularity becomes the strongest character in the series. He's capable of warping the fabric of reality at will, able to control fate itself through his Phenomenal Affirmation ability and is powerful enough to give Bayonetta one of the hardest fights in her career and this is assuming if he doesn't win the battle outright because he rigged the outcome — something that happened to over two thousand Bayonettas before he fights the Arch Eve Origin version. Even when she manages to beat him, it's a Mutual Kill as Singularity manages to damage her Umbra Watch enough to cause her to overtax her powers and shatter it, resulting in her getting sent to Inferno... or at least it seemed like one, until Origins revealed he managed to barely survive and escape to the past.
  • Would Hurt a Child: In his appearance in Origins, he's willing to attempt to murder a young Cereza in order to reacquire his powers, and also intends on killing an equally young Jeanne when she refuses to back off.
  • You Are Number 6: During his final boss fight, his title is "DCH-AN-3G-H6554823 Singularity Chaos/Balance/Definition".
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Proclaims multiple times that his actions are inevitable and predetermined, and thus, Resistance Is Futile. All the Bayonettas beg to differ.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: Singularity absorbs the souls of the Umbra Witches he or his Homunculi kills to empower himself. Almost every Bayonetta across the multiverse ends up being killed and absorbed by him, as do a few Jeannes. However, Arch Eve Origin Bayonetta damages him enough that they are able to break free and briefly come back to assist her.

Stage bosses

Boss Homunculi that appear at the end of each stage.

    Iridescent

Iridescent, Mega Aerial Raid Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_iridescent.png

A titanic Homunculus deployed in Prime Manhattan, then appears in Alternate Tokyo pursuing the train Bayonetta is riding.

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: It's bigger than Gomorrah and can easily bite it in half.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: Destroying a lotus bud-looking growth on its body disables the field of energy projected from its snout, which in turn prevents it from phasing through objects.
  • Boss Tease: Before it's fought in Alternate Tokyo, a few can be seen attacking Prime Manhattan only to be single-handedly dealt with by Rodin.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Rodin blows it away with one punch, but it not only survives the encounter, but manages to give a bonafide Physical God pause at how it did so and what its made of.
  • Flying Sea Food Special: A humongous shark-like enemy, swimming through the air.
  • Intangibility: It is able to phase in and out of reality, allowing it to "dive" into concrete buildings before emerging in solid form to destroy those same buildings.
  • Meaningful Name: To be iridescent means to show rainbow-like colors, and Iridescent is certainly iridescent. It also refers to iridescent clouds.
  • Nested Mouths: It has smaller sets of jaws inside its jaws.
  • Space Master: It's phasing ability can drastically warp the environment, causing buildings and roads to stretch and bend like rubber.

Iridescent Core, Emergency Interceptor Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_iridescent_core.png

What appears to be controlling the Iridescent and what protects it from intruders.

  • Blow You Away: It can summon extreme winds to repel intruders.
  • Covered in Gunge: Produces adhesive fluids to traps its enemies.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: It has an extra set of large arms that comprises its lower body, for a total of four arms.
  • Suddenly Speaking: It is surprisingly eloquent. That's due to it acting as a mouthpiece for Singularity.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Through it, Singularity outright tells Alternate Tokyo Bayonetta that she "cannot stop the inevitable". Arguably he's right since he already arranged her death and her universe to be destroyed before the fight even started.

Arch Iridescent, Giga Behemoth Decisive Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_arch_iridescent.png

Despite the defeat of its previous two components, this Homunculus just refuses to roll over and die. With a power boost gained from absorbing Alternate Tokyo Bayonetta, it has some new limbs and extra tricks up its sleeve.

  • Beam-O-War: Engages in one with Sin Gomorrah during the final climax of its fight.
  • Beware My Stinger Tail: It can split its tail to reveal a tip that looks like an electrical tower, which functions as a railgun.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Downplayed, but calling it a Giga Behemoth is a bit redundant.
  • Made of Iron: Both the Iridescent body and its Core undergoes rigorous abuse, but it's still down for a Godzilla battle after all that.
  • Not Zilla: A highly destructive, bipedal behemoth that towers over skyscrappers, fought in Tokyo even? Yup.

    Pyrocumulus

Pyrocumulus, Mega Humanoid Exothermal Decisive Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_pyrocumulus.png

The boss of Alternate Qin Lan, a flaming juggernaut chasing after the Bayonettas. Not only does it adapt to whatever environment it's deployed in, it can also influence its environment, causing natural disasters like volcanic eruptions.

  • Killer Gorilla: It has the body shape and mannerisms of one. It even makes ape noises.
  • King Mook: A Cumulonimbus type with enhanced defensive and adaptive capabilities.
  • Magma Man: Getting deployed into a volcano gave it powers over fire and magma. It can slam the ground to cause lava to erupt.
  • Meaningful Name: Pyrocumulus is a type of clouds that may form accompanying high-temperature events, such as forest fires and volcanic eruptions. Fittingly, Pyrocumulus emerges from a volcano.
  • Primal Chest-Pound: Does this in its introduction combined with a Mighty Roar.
  • Wreathed in Flames: It can summon fire to its extremities and weapon to boost its attacks.

Arch-Pyrocumulus, Mega Humanoid Aerial Decisive Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_arch_pyrocumulus.png

After absorbing Alternate Qin Lan Bayonetta, Pyrocumulus gains additional maneuverability and abilities, taking the fight to the skies.

  • Butt-Monkey: Almost literally. Unlike most of the Homunculi which are almost always played as the horrific threats they are, the Arch-Pyrocumulus fight is ridiculous, with Queen Butterfly flinging water bubbles on it while bathing and just all-over refusing to take it seriously before it gets punched to kingdom come and beyond.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: It plucks off its tubing to create clones of itself.
  • Floating in a Bubble: Queen Butterfly traps it in bubbles to immobilize it so she can punch it to kingdom come.
  • Monkey King Lite: It rides on a cloud and wields a staff. It is capable of creating duplicates of itself by tearing off its tentacle “hairs”, similar to Sun Wukong’s method of duplication. When defeated, Bayonetta squeezes its head with a golden band (a reference to the headband used to keep Sun Wukong obedient - with Queen Butterfly herself representing both Buddha and Guangyin), and it gets crushed by a shattered part of a mountain, a reference to Sun Wukong's entrapment.

    Cirrostratus & Cirrocumulus

Cirrostratus & Cirrocumulus, Heavy Tandem Combat Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_cirrostratus.png
Cirrostratus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_cirrocumulus.png
Cirrocumulus

A pair of partially humanoid, draconic Homunculi that are fought together. They were created with the intent to replicate gods worshiped by ancient civilizations. Cirrostratus is the dark-armored one while Cirrocumulus is the white-armored one.

  • Blow You Away: Cirrocumulus' dragon head breathes cyclones. It can also float using wind currents and add wind to its attacks for extra oomph.
  • Cute Monster Girl: Dragon head arms and lack of facial features aside, they resemble beautiful draconic centaurs with voluptuous, and clearly female bodies. They even have Buddhist talismans covering their breasts!
  • Elemental Powers: Also overlaps with Breath Weapon. Their powers are meant to represent "divine judgement."
  • Dual Boss: They are fought simultaneously, although the first time you only fight one at a time interchangeably. In subsequent confrontations, you have to face both at once.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Their non-draconic humanoid arms hold a shield that can be used to create a barrier. These shields can be destroyed as a way to stagger them.
  • Mythical Motifs: The arena you first fight them in is a reference to the Egyptian Book of the Dead, more specifically Anubis' weighing of the soul.
  • Shock and Awe: Cirrostratus' dragon head can breathe lightning and it can summon electric barriers and traps.

    Stratocumulus

Stratocumulus, Giga Cryptid Decisive Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_stratocumulus.png

The boss of Alternate Cairo. This colossal Homunculus type was created after the completion of Cirrocumulus and Cirrostratus as an advancement of Singularity's concept of replicating divinity, and with the application of ideas he found in ancient texts.

  • Attack Its Weak Point: Cirrocumulus and Cirrostratus' cores are found in Stratocumulus' torso and head. However, Stratocumulus shields one of its cores with an energy barrier.
  • Breath Weapon: Its snake arms can breathe fire and lasers.
  • Call-Back: It bears a remarkable resemblance to Jubileus and Queen Sheba, and its designed by Singularity to replicate ancient gods based on scriptures.
  • Colossus Climb: The Phantom has to run up its snakes and onto its body to Attack Its Weak Point.
  • Fusion Dance: A combination of Cirrocumulus, Cirrostratus, and Alternate Cairo Jeanne's power.
  • Glass Cannon: Despite its huge size, to compensate for the time limit it doesn't take much hits.
  • Mythical Motifs: Its appearance bears resemblance to the Hindu goddess Kali, Mother of the Universe and Goddess of Destruction.
  • Rule of Cool: While other Homunculi were designed with functionality in mind, Stratocumulus was created with design aesthetics that Singularity liked.
  • Snake Whip: Its four snake arms can be used for flailing and biting.
  • Timed Mission: You only have five minutes before the Phantom overheats and goes off like a nuke, so you'd better hit Stratocumulus enough to make sure she goes down with him. In addition, you also lose time if The Phantom takes hits.

    Perlucidus

Perlucidus, Parasitic Control Module

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_perlucidus.png

A type of Homunculi that Singularity deployed to take control Alternate Paris Rosa and the French military, then the alternate Bayonetta from the same universe, turning them against Arch Eve Origin Bayonetta.

  • And I Must Scream: Not them, but their victims. By Alternate Paris Rosa's dialogue, it's implied she's aware of what's going on and can only beg Arch Eve Origin Bayonetta to kill her before it takes control again.
  • Body Horror: How do they take control of people? By injecting themselves into people and replacing their spine. The concept art gallery has an unfortunate depiction of how far they ingrain themselves into people and it is as horrid as it sounds.
  • Horde of Alien Locusts: A swarm of hummingbird-looking Homunculi seeking to destroy reality.
  • Meaningful Name: Perlucidus clouds are characterized as low-lying clouds with plentiful gaps that show the larger clouds above. The Perlucidus Homunculi, similarly, are a swarm of small bodies with gaps in between that let you see higher, bigger bodies (in this case, Alternate Paris Bayonetta flying above the swarm).
  • Mind-Control Eyes: Their victims sport glowing green eyes.
  • Puppeteer Parasite: A person possessed by the Perlucidus have their eyes turn teal green, a teal "tail" sticking out of their back, and become controlled by Singularity. The Perlucidus force Alternate Paris Bayonetta and Rosa to summon Mictlantecuhtli and the Umbran Clock Tower, respectively, as enemies.
  • Rain of Blood: A consequence of Baal Zebul making them all explode in the sky, causing a rain of reality-erasing Homonculus blood.
  • There Is No Cure: Once one of these latch onto you, there's nothing you can do other than to have someone come in and put you down.
  • Zerg Rush: They come in large groups and attack in swarms.

    Aureole

Aureole, Mega Aerial Fortress

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_aureole.png

A titanic battleship that is functionally similar to the Resplendence angels, deploying invading Homunculi to universes Singularity targets. Later on, one that acts as the home of Singularity is fought in the the Alphaverse.

  • Aim for the Eye: The mouth-like projections branching off from the main fortress hold a snake-like eye stalk that emerges to attack you. Thankfully, you only have to deal with one instead of all three.
  • Boss Tease: Before you fight it in the Alphaverse, multiple of these are deployed in Prime Manhattan and Alternate China. You only fight the one seen in the Alphaverse, however.
  • Combat Tentacles: The eye stalks have six tentacles with mace-like claws at the end, good for whipping and bludgeoning.
  • Cool Ship: As a mobile fortress, it can deploy Homunculi for ground assault. It also acts as a telepathic relay to extend Singularity’s control over numerous Homunculi within a wide range.
  • Frickin' Laser Beams: Shoots a swirl of multiple lasers.
  • Meaningful Name: Aureole means "golden" and refers to luminous clouds. They are often used in artwork and iconography to represent a halo, which is the symbol of holy or uplifted figures. It's fitting for the fortress that Singularity operates from.
  • No-Sell: Bayonetta primarily fights it with Madame Butterfly, but as a savvy player might guess, it's immune to Flutter Kiss. However, there's a Bewitchment for hitting it with one anyway.

Humanoid Units

    Stratus

Stratus, Light Humanoid Generic Module

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_stratus.png

The most basic type of Homuculus that Bayonetta faces. They are Mooks, common cannon fodder and materials for making other Homunculi.

  • Abnormal Ammo: They are the ammo in this case, as some gigantic Homunculi (notably Virga and Castellanus) can shoot dozens of Strati as if they were missiles.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: Some types create an Energy Blade from its forearm to attack.
  • Butt-Monkey: A downplayed example. None of the Homunculi are particularly played for laughs or in any humiliating manner bar Arch-Pyrocumulus just to emphasize the seriousness of the threat they pose, but they are the sort gets the most thrashed out of the Homunculi with even regular human firearms not bolstered by Bullet Arts being capable of taking them down, and it's possible for one to peek Jeanne showering only to be killed instantly.
  • Fusion Dance: They can combine to create other types of Homunculi. This is indicated by the various humanoid forms that appear in the goop when a Homunculus manifests.
  • The Goomba: The first and weakest enemy type encountered.
  • Hive Mind: Stratus don't have indiviual intelligence, rather controlled telepathically by Singularity via their light ribbons.
  • Morph Weapon: Their arms can transform into various kinds of weapons.
  • Terminator Impersonator: Mass-produced humanoid Mecha-Mooks that can transform their arms into weapons or merge into larger weapons, controlled by an omnicidal AI who seeks to eradicate the only person capable of opposing them.

    Floccus

Floccus, Heavy Humanoid Combat Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_floccus.png

An amalgamation of Stratus units to create a large, lumbering exterminator. Since it isn't under Singularity's direct control, the connection between its components is weak and a good hit will break it apart.

  • Blade Below the Shoulder: Like the Stratus, it can create a blade on its arm that gives it surprisingly long reach.
  • Covered in Gunge: It can partially liquefy its body, which will trap Bayonetta if she makes contact with it.
  • Meaningful Name: Floccus, while meaning "tuft of wool", can also be interpreted as pertaining to a flock or group. The Floccus Homunculi are comprised of "flocks" of Stratus.
  • Mighty Glacier: It's sturdy and powerful but slow.
  • Starter Villain: The first major Homunculus to be fought after the Stratus at the beginning of the third game.

    Nebulosus

Nebulosus, Light Humanoid Assault Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_nebulosus.png

An enhanced Stratus unit with more musculature to give it flight capabilities.

    Fractus

Fractus, Heavy Humanoid Combat Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_fractus.png

An enhanced Floccus unit with added offensive and defensive capabilities.

  • Deflector Shields: It can generate energy barriers to protect itself.
  • Elite Mook: A stronger version of the Floccus.
  • Brutish Character, Brutish Weapon: Wields a huge hammer with a retractable wrecking ball on the opposite end, and is a massive brute. Actually, it looks like a kendama, which is appropriate since it first appears in Alternate Tokyo.

    Cumulonimbus

Cumulonimbus, Heavy Humanoid Decisive Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_cumulonimbus.png

A gigantic bipedal humanoid Homunculus type. It can operate autonomously, with an "assault mode" that activates when its connection to Singularity is broken.

Aerial Units

    Lacunosus

Lacunosus, Light Aerial Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_lacunosus.png

Homunculi with large wing-like hands that give it flight capabilities and increased reach. They excel in playing keep-away, dive bombing and shooting energy projectiles.

  • Creepy Long Fingers: Not only are the "fingers" on its hands freakishly long and feather-like, they're humanoid in shape due to being made of Strati.
  • Flying Sea Food Special: Resembles giant goldfish and is an Airborne Mook.
  • Mook Maker: Of a sort. It can conjure tangible, animate hands that try to chase and grab Bayonetta separate from the Lacunosus' own action.

Bestial Units

    Asperatus

Asperatus, Heavy Bestial Decisive Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_asperatus.png

A giant, quadrupedal beast-like Homunculus type. Its head is heavily armored, perfect for charging and trampling.

  • Impossibly Graceful Giant: One would think such a brutish, animalistic enemy would be clumsier but not only is it fast, it can jump higher than its own height, adding a vertical variable to the fight. The key to defeating it is removing its speed.
  • Rhino Rampage: Resembling rhinos, these hulking brutes charge at and upturn anything in its path.

    Volutus

Volutus, Heavy Bestial Decisive Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_volutus.png

A rampaging animalistic Homunculi that charges and tackles anything in its way, leaving a sea of fire in its wake.

  • Elite Mook: A stronger variant of the Asperatus.
  • Full-Boar Action: It resembles a wild boar, with its tusks comprising most of its face.
  • Wreathed in Flames: Its feet are on fire passively, although it can boost the flames and leave a trail as it runs.

Covert Units

    Uncinus

Uncinus, Light Covert Combat Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_uncinus.png

Burrowing Homunculi introduced in Alternate Cairo. They tend to come in groups.

  • Ambush Enemy: It hides in the sand and waits for its prey to lower its guard before striking.
  • Breath Weapon: Can fire a Frickin' Laser Beam from its mouth.
  • Sand Worm: It's more of a sand dragon, but same thing. They are stationary and hide in the sand to ambush anything that comes by.

    Tuba

Tuba, Heavy Covert Combat Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_tuba.png

No, it's not a musical instrument. This Homunculus is like a mole and a worm mashed together. Watch your footing because it'll burrow around and burst out of the sand.

  • Elite Mook: It's a stronger variant of the Uncinus.
  • Meaningful Name: A tuba cloud, better known as a funnel cloud, is a tube-shaped cloud formation formed by circulating air. Not only is the Tuba tube-shaped but it also makes "tubes" by tunneling in the sand.
  • Sand Worm: They bear a resemblance to polychaetes but function like sand worms, tunnelling around and attacking from below.

Flotation Units

    Pannus

Pannus, Light Flotation Combat Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_pannus.png

Balloon-like Homunculi first encountered in Alternate Tokyo. Designed to actively invite attack so that it can split itself apart and self-destruct to deal heavy damage to large areas.

  • Asteroids Monster: It splits into smaller versions of itself if it's hit by Demon Slave attacks. Once it gets too small to split further, it tails Bayonetta and self-destructs, meaning that it's best to forgo demons when fighting them (save for Wink Slave and Assault Slave).
  • Flying Sea Food Special: They look like giant jellyfish and are Airbourne Mooks.
  • Meaningful Name: Pannus means "shred", which is what it will try to do with its tentacles. A pannus cloud is named so because of its ragged, wispy appearance.
  • Spin Attack: It twirls its tentacles like a high-speed rotor blade, shredding up anything around it.

    Duplicatus

Duplicatus, Light Flotation Combat Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_duplicatus.png

The larger cousin of the Pannus, encountered in Alternate Paris. It is much more aggressive and actively uses its ability to split apart to create attack formations.

  • Asteroids Monster: Like the Pannus, it splits apart into smaller version as it is damaged. Unlike the Pannus, it can remerge or coordinate its split selves to atack and evade.
  • Elite Mook: A stronger variant of the Pannus.
  • Flying Seafood Special: Like the Pannus, it resembles a jellyfish.
  • Ground Pound: It will rise up for a little extra height before crashing down in an attempt to harm Bayonetta.
  • Meaningful Name: Duplicatus means "double" and it can duplicate, or rather split itself apart.

Generation Units

    Humilus

Humilus, Barrier Generation Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_humilus.png

A Homunculus type created to generate barriers that impede enemies and defend other Homunculi.

  • Deflector Shields: Its sole purpose as a unit.
  • Reviving Enemy: Groups of Humili sustain each other, meaning that so long as there are other Humili, the defeated one(s) can return. As such, they must all be destroyed at (mostly) the same time.
  • Underground Monkey: It's a slightly altered version of the Spissatus.

    Genitus

Genitus, Humanoid Module Generation Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_genitus.png

A Homunculus type created to produce other Homunculi.

  • Meaningful Name: Genitus, as in "genisis", since it produces other Homunculi. A genitus cloud produces other types of clouds.
  • Mook Maker: It has no method of attack, merely taking root like a plant and draining energy from the surrounding area to continuously produce Strati.
  • Underground Monkey: A variant of the Spissatus and Humilus.

Ranged Units

    Cavum

Cavum, Light Ranged Support Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_cavum.png

Four-legged turrets with increased metabolic rates that allows it to generate lasers via extreme cellular fission.

  • Ceiling Cling: They can hang onto walls and ceilings, making it harder to reach them while giving them better angles to shoot at you.
  • Frickin' Laser Beams: It can shoot a singular laser or fire a bombardment. Either way, it needs a moment to charge up, giving you time to attack.

    Radiatus

Radiatus, Light Ranged Support Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_radiatus.png

Mobile turrets introduced in Alternate Cairo. Its mutated barrel allows it to shoot lasers to a scattered blast.

  • Frickin' Laser Beams: Shoots a variety of lasers, including the Cavum's singular beam, although the Radiatus has a shorter charge time. It can also shoot a cluster of homing projectiles, or a short energy flash if Bayonetta gets too close.
  • Elite Mook: A stronger variant of the Cavum. Apparently its development was unintended, but Singularity recognized the mutation as useful and began producing more troops with the mutation.

Other Units

    Spissatus

Spissatus, Chemical Weapon Dissemination Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_spissatus.png

A stationary type of Homunculus that resembles a plant bulb. Its only function is to produce clouds of Erasure.

  • Fog of Doom: For as long as it exists, it'll generate damaging Erasure fog. It's best to take it out from afar.
  • Meaningful Name: Spissatus means "thickened." A spissatus cloud consists of dense, thick strands that can sometimes block out the sun. Fitting for the destructive, fog-generating Spissatus Homunculus.

    Virga

Virga, Heavy Adaptive Combat Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_virga.png

A gigantic Homunculus type with a segmented body. Like a tank, it causes damage simply by moving and it packs a variety of offensive capabilities.

    Congestus

Congestus, Light Memory Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_congestus.png

An enemy that resembles a clock, the Congestus is more of a puzzle set piece than an outright enemy.

  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: A Time Master that looks like a clock.
  • Flipping Helpless: Bayonetta defeats it even after being reduced to a young girl by pushing it over. It's apparently incapable of righting itself afterwards.
  • Fountain of Youth: Proximity to the Congestus de-ages Bayonetta to a teenage version of herself, forcing her to use dodges to confront it rather than combat.
  • Squishy Wizard: It has localized control over time and can reduce Bayonetta to a helpless young girl, but it's easily defeated by this same young girl by being a literal pushover.
  • Time Master: It can alter time and needs to be used to solve certain puzzles.

    Mediocris

Mediocris, Light Behavioral Prediction Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_mediocris.png

A Homunculus type designed for enhanced speed, with a lightweight body and highly developed leg musculature.

  • Armless Biped: It has no arms and a small, hunchbacked upper body, instead relying on its thunder thighs for all its moving and attacking.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: By observing the muscle movement and behavioural patterns of its enemy, it can predict and outwit any foe (except Bayonetta).
  • Fragile Speedster: They are fast and erratic, making them hard to hit, but they're weak both offensively and defensively.
  • Hurricane Kick: Uses its bladed legs to become a blender of destruction.
  • Ironic Name: Mediocris means "ordinary, normal, mediocre." A mediocris cloud is as wide as it is tall. Not only is the Mediocris Homunculus taller than it is wide, it's notable for its Fragile Speedster build compared to the more mediocre, basic Stratus.
  • Kung Fu-Proof Mook: That cutscene where they dodge all of Gomorrah's attacks isn't just for show; in higher difficulties especially, they are practically impossible to hit with demons outside witch time and Wink Slave as they'll just dodge demon attacks.

    Murus

Murus, Heavy Enhanced Armor Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_murus.png

A vehicular, armored Homunculus introduced in Alternate Cairo.

  • Gem Tissue: It can turn parts of its body into crystal to further shield itself from damage.
  • Meaningful Name: Murus means "wall" and it is heavily fortified. The finger-like legs at the front could also be a reference to the rolling bottoms characteristic of murus clouds.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Its armor has gaps in it, letting liquids like Baal's poison leak through and hurt it.

    Castellanus

Castellanus, Heavy Monitoring Interception Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_castellanus.png

A tower of lotus flower-shaped compartments with a humanoid torso controlling the whole lot at the top. Knock down the tower to take down the core.

  • Combat Tentacles: Tentacles with three-fingered graspers can sprout anywhere out of the tower.
  • Deflector Shields: It can generate shields to protect its tower.
  • Meaningful Name: Castellanus means "pertaining to a castle or fort". In meteorology, it refers to a stack of clouds. The Homunculus is a tower comprised of stacks of individual components.
  • Mook Maker: The tower components can make Strati to fight you.
  • Mythical Motifs: The core at the top evokes iconography relating to how Buddhas are portrayed, complete with a halo and mudra (hand gesture).
  • Rings of Death: It can use the halo-like fixture behind it like this.
  • Shock and Awe: It's tentacles have electric currents running through them.
  • Stealth Pun: The lotus position (Padmasana) is the name of a cross-legged meditative position. The lower half of the core's body is a literal lotus flower.

    Nimbostratus

Nimbostratus, Heavy Distraction Support Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_nimbostratus.png

Resembling a radio tower, this Homunculus sends out dimension-distorting pulses that turn other Homunculi invisible. It also keeps an eye on enemy movements.

  • Elite Mook: A stronger variant of the Castellanus.
  • Pinball Projectile: It shoots a stream of large, round bullets around itself for self-defense, the shots bouncing against the floor as it travels.
  • Invisibility: The Nimbostratus grants invisibility as a Status Buff among the other Homunculi. However, this only makes them visually invisible, as it's easy to find them via echolocation.

    Opacus

Opacus, Heavy Assault Combat Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonetta_3_opacus.png

A variant of the Tuba type Homunculus, adjusted to operate above ground and be more aggressive.

Video Example(s):

Top

Arch-Pyrocumulus

It rides on a cloud and wields a staff. It is capable of creating duplicates of itself by tearing off its tentacle "hairs", similar to Sun Wukong's method of duplication.

How well does it match the trope?
