Tekken 7
Classic Outfit (T3)

俺はもう迷わない。(Ore wa mou mayowanai.)note

Origin: Japan
Fighting Style: Mishima-style Fighting Karate and Kazama-style Traditional Martial Arts (Tekken 3 and Tag Tournament only; Easter egg in Tekken 6-Tag 2), Traditional Okinawan Karate (Tekken 4 onwards)
Appears in: 3 and all subsequent mainline games, Tag, Tag 2

Voiced by: Isshin Chiba (since debut), Patrick Seitz (EN, Blood Vengeance; credited as Darren Daniels), Brad Swaile (EN, Street Fighter x Tekken), Kaiji Tang (EN, Bloodline)

Jin is Jun's son from Kazuya, inheriting his Devil Gene. When Jun was attacked and seemingly killed by Ogre, Jin swore revenge and as instructed, studies Mishima Karate through his grandpa Heihachi (and also enrolls in school)... only to be betrayed once Jin defeats Ogre. This awakens his Devil Gene, transforming him into Devil Jin, after which he thrashes Heihachi before fleeing. Driven by utter spite for his family, he unlearns the Mishima Karate and learns traditional Karate, then enters the 4th King of Iron Fist Tournament, also hearing that his father Kazuya (that he equally hates for his Devil Gene that he inherited from Kazuya) is Back from the Dead. But, he ends up captured and awakened in a temple, where he proceeds to beat the crap out of Heihachi and Kazuya, only sparing them due to his mother's spirit's interference.

After his retreat, Jin starts getting overwhelmed by his Devil Gene, which leads to him deciding to end his own bloodline. He enters the 5th tournament, but is unable to concentrate and got his ass kicked by his rival Hwoarang, which causes his Superpowered Evil Side to take over him and curb-stomp Hwoarang back. Then he goes to beat Jinpachi, claiming the ownership of the Zaibatsu and uses it to... Take Over the World. In a stunning move, Jin handles the Zaibatsu in an even worse way than his father did, using the Tekken Force as his own private army and using it to wage war against the entire world. His actions put the entire world into a state of chaos, and damage the lives of many people, such as Miguel. When he learns that once again his father and grandpa are against that, he announces the 6th tournament.

In Scenario Campaign, he is finally confronted by Lars, the leader of the splinter resistance group within the Tekken Force. After defeating Lars, Jin reveals that Alisa was created to serve as a weapon for him, and activates her true programming. After Alisa is put out of commission due to sustaining critical damage from protecting Jin from Lars, the two clash one last time, and Jin is defeated . He reveals to Lars the true purpose for his actions - to summon Azazel and destroy him, believing that he is the "source" of the Devil Gene. Once Azazel appears again, Jin summons forth all of his power and destroys Azazel, sacrificing himself in the process.

...or so it was believed. The ending of Scenario Campaign reveals that Jin is indeed alive, but unfortunately is still cursed with the Devil Gene. As revealed in 7, it is not Azazel, but Kazumi Mishima who is the true source of the Gene. Wandering in the Middle East with limited strength, Jin eventually collapses and about to be apprehended by the G Corporation. However, he is saved by Lars who wants his help to fix the damage he has done to the world. Jin remains unconscious throughout the final clash of his grandfather and father (which results the former's death) but receives treatment from the Violet Corporation ran by his half-uncle Lee Chaolan.

Jin wakes up in time to fulfill his mission: Undo the damage he has done to the world and eliminate Kazuya Mishima, realizing that Devil Gene bearers like them has no right to exist in this world. He has learned from his stint as a tyrant that power isn't everything and worked in tandem with Lars and Alisa to make a stand against Kazuya's assault against the whole world, once again trying to utilize the teachings that his mother taught him. But the one thing he did not expect is that his mother Jun Kazama reveals herself to be alive...

Jin's gameplay was radically changed in Tekken 4, though later installments would introduce his "Devil Jin" form that plays like his pre-Tekken 4 self. Jin is a versatile character who can do pretty much anything. He's excellent on both offense and defense, but isn't amazing at either. He has strong pokes and several great strings, while also having the deadliest parry in the game and a strong suite of counter hit tools, but he has pretty mediocre okizeme and has difficulties with being outranged.

    Tropes A-H
  • Accidental Pervert: In Asuka's 5 ending, he somehow ends up landing his hand on her boob. Yes, he does that (accidentally) towards his own cousin, although neither are aware of how they're related to each other until 6.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: He's a lot less aloof in general in Bloodline. His rivalry with Hwoarang in particular has much less actual bad blood between the two.
  • Advertised Extra: In 8 his updated moveset where he combines his usual moveset with Devil powered moves is this. Despite trailers showing him using it during the final battle against Kazuya, Jin only uses it during the first chapter, afterwards he can't use his Devil Gene anymore so he can't use his updated moveset, and spends the rest of the game with a moveset that is more or less from Tekken 7. Even during the final battle he doesn't get it back; when he's fighting Kazuya as Devil and Angel Jin, he's using a stronger version of Devil Jin's moveset, and after both him and Kazuya lose the Devil Gene, Jin naturally can't use his updated moveset as he no longer has the Devil Gene to do his new or upgraded moves.
  • Aesop Amnesia: In 4 he wants to kill Heihachi and Kazuya, but a vision of Jun reminds him of her teachings and he spares them. In the very next game he kills Jinpachi, with 6's story of Mishimas making it clear he didn't care and only thought of Jinpachi as a weak opponent. And then he starts a war. It seems to finally stick in 8, where he decides he doesn't need to kill Kazuya after both of them are freed from the Devil Gene, leaving him unconscious after their final battle for Jun to find.
  • All for Nothing:
    • Started a war to lure out Azazel, the originator of the Devil Gene. assuming that he's the Keystone Army for Devil Gene. He's wrong, meaning that he started the war for no reason and now a lot of people want him dead, which might have been part of his motive anyway since he pretty much feels that having the Devil Gene makes him too dangerous to live. Zafina's eventual introduction in 7's season 3 only makes this worse, as it reveals Jin also failed in killing Azazel. 8 clarifies that Azazel is the progenitor of the Devil Gene, bestowing it to his loyal servants and followers, which is how Kazumi's branch of the family acquired the gene. However, even when Azazel is Deader than Dead when Jin purifies the Gene from both himself and Kazuya, No Ontological Inertia still does not apply, as it is revealed that Reina can use the power of the Devil Gene herself.
    • The Despair Ending of 8. Jin goes on a personal journey where he learns the true nature of the Devil Gene, forgives himself for starting World War III and resolves to protect his loved ones, unlocks a new fighting style that combines elements of Mishima style, Kazama style and traditional karate and is even able to completely destroy the Devil Gene in himself and Kazuya... and it still isn't enough to beat him. Kazuya still wins and defeats Jin for good, throwing him off a cliff before returning to conquering the world.
  • All Your Powers Combined: In the final fight with Kazuya in 8 he starts cycling through his fighting styles, from his current style to his original Mishima fighting style from 3 and then to his mother's Kazama style martial arts, eventually ending up with a combination of all them for final phase of the fight.
  • Anime Hair:
    • A combination of Kazuya's Anime Hair with bangs inherited from Jun.
    • In Dark Resurrection, one of his custom items is a new hairstyle that looks identical to Super Saiyan Goku's hair. It also glows blue.
  • The Antagonist: In Tekken 6 after his Face–Heel Turn. Later more of a Disc-One Final Boss before Azazel.
  • Antagonistic Offspring: To say that he detests his evil father, Kazuya Mishima, would be putting it mildly.
  • Anti-Anti-Christ: He bears the Devil Gene, and transforms into his own Devil form. Tekken 8 finally drives home that he embraces this. Not only he manages to thwart his father's tyranny, but also expunge the actual progenitor of the Devil Gene that is Azazel for good.
  • The Anti-Nihilist: Type 2 of this trope is what ultimately makes him distinct from Kazuya, and Heihachi by extension. In 8 it's revealed his nihilistic tendencies were more of a result of the severe traumas of betrayal and pain he's suffered throughout his life, and the depression that followed which led to him becoming a Death Seeker. The key factor that separates him from Kazuya is that unlike his father, Jin grew up for most of his life with a loving mother in Jun and despite everything he's suffered, he still genuinely does have people who care about him and his well-being, eventually realizing what a fool he'd been for trying to reject and throw them away and coming to the decision that even if the world may be cruel, it's one that's worth living in and fighting for if it means his friends and loved ones will be by his side until the end.
  • Anti-Hero: The Unscrupulous Hero variant. He fights for a good cause but he's extremely cold even to his allies and usually shows no mercy to his enemies.
  • Anti-Villain: A Well-Intentioned one. He doesn't mind declaring war on the entire world if it's for the greater good.
  • Apologetic Attacker: In 4 and 5, as long as you're not on his hitlist (i.e. Kazuya and Heihachi), he'll ask you to forgive him for beating you into a bloody pulp.
  • Arc Symbol: His introduction in 3 has him wearing Kazuya's trademark gloves. After going his own way, his personal trademark is now his Power Tattoo, as well as the three-armed spiral on his own gloves. Notably, in his Devil form, as well as his human form from 6 onward, he's wearing Kazuya's gloves again. As of 7, he and his Devil form are the only ones wearing these gloves, as Kazuya doesn't wear them anymore (at least in his default outfit).
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Not as brazen about it as his rival Hwoarang, but Jin is very confident in his abilities and justifiably so. He has, after all, won the most King of Iron Fist tournaments of any character and has defeated several inhuman monsters without even resorting to his latent Devil power. After 6, he openly revels in his superiority over his opponents and expresses vicious contempt for those weaker than him, not unlike his father.
  • The Atoner: He's set to kill Kazuya during the epilogue of 7, to put an end to the very war that he himself started. This is continued in 8 where Kazuya tells him off for being the one to start the war, Jin doesn't deny his actions and is seeking to atone for it. At the end, he lets go of his hatred for Kazuya, sparing him so that Jun can finish what she started. Although he did end the War and most importantly, the Mishima feud cycle, his atonement is far from over; he still has to face charges for the damages of that said war since he started it, and Reina is not only revealed to be Heihachi's illegitimate daughter, she also has the Devil Gene.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Starting in 4, Jin was given an additional stance named Omen. Up until 5, this merely buffed a couple of his moves and gave him some extended combo strings, similar to Bryan's Taunt move. Starting in 6, however, this allowed him to access his old Tekken 3 movelist for a few moves, primarily those similar to Kazuya or Devil Jin. There's also a visual indicator of him assuming this stance, as his fighting pose will resemble Heihachi's. And in Tag 2, Jin's special combo with Devil Jin starts from him in this stance. The impractical part of this is that it takes some precise inputs to even assume the stance, making this more of an Easter Egg than anything else. It's ultimately gone by 7, but makes a return in 8 as a Heat-exclusive ability that allows him to do one Mishima-style move while expending some of his Heat Gauge.
  • Back from the Dead: His (canonical) ending in 3, thanks to the Devil Gene.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: At the end of 8, by facing his devil self and coming to terms with his past and sins, Jin has finally begun to embrace his Devil powers, accepting it as a part of himself, and as a means to protect others.
  • Badass Army: His army of Tekken Force in 6, though he loses them after the Zaibatsu is retaken by Heihachi in 7.
  • Badass Biker: Several cutscenes feature him riding around on a motorcycle. It's yet another thing that Hwoarang competes with him over.
  • Badass Crew:
    • In 6, he formed one with Eddy Gordo and Nina Williams. It got disbanded after Jin's disappearance, with Eddy cutting ties with the Zaibatsu after his master died and Nina has no loyalty to anyone.
    • By the end of 7 he becomes a part of another one with Lars, Alisa and Lee. This time, to stop the war the Jin himself started by stopping Kazuya's tyranny.
  • Badass Family: Regardless of his hatred towards them, he's still a Mishima by blood. The Kazama side of his bloodline isn't half bad either, as his mother Jun fought off Ogre to keep him safe.
  • Badass Longcoat: Wears one in his fifth game epilogue, and gains it as his second costume in Tekken 6. It returns in Tekken Revolution as a DLC costume, and is available in Tekken 7 as a customization item.
  • Balance Between Good and Evil: Perhaps the most important motif in Jin's character is his struggle to reconcile his nature as a child of good and evil, with his mother's pure Kazama blood and his father's demonic Mishima genes constantly warring for control over his destiny. Some of his outfits have a black-and-white aesthetic to complement this. While his 4 ending sees him embrace his mother's teachings by sparing Kazuya and Heihachi, every subsequent game shows him giving into his hatred, allowing the Devil Gene to corrupt him further.
    • Probably most emphasized in his 8 fighting style and appearance. His fighting style is now more a mix of his Devil abilities and his regular style rather than one or the other. His default costume is now a unique balance of both his parents' default outfits in the game as he wears a jacket and gauntlets like his father, but his monochromatic color scheme for his clothes is the same as his Mother's. Tying both together is his own unique fashion sense which is far more modern and practical than his parents. His new Angel form has him willingly harness the Devil Gene passed on to him from Kazuya, but now fused with the purification powers Jun wields. When he and Kazuya clash after losing their Devil forms, Jin finally lifts the self-imposed restrictions on the Mishima-style karate Heihachi taught him and proceeds to use it and Jun's Kazama-style martial arts extensively alongside his traditional karate from 4, fusing together his original and newer fighting styles in order to finally best his father.
  • Being Good Sucks: Cursed with the Devil Gene that is slowly corrupting him and wants to get rid of it as soon as possible? Check. Member of the Mishima Clan which includes his father who is also a Devil Gene holder and his grandfather who betrayed him after trusting him? Double check. Having to push Xiaoyu and Hwoarang away so that they won’t be involved in his endeavors? Triple check.
  • Berserk Button: His own father and grandfather piss him off due to their immoral and twisted actions that causes Jin to really hate them.
    • To a lesser extent, he will also transform unconsciously if his life or at least his physical integrity are threatened. Heihachi's attempt on his life at the end of the third tournament, Hwoarang defeating his human form during the fifth tournament and UN soldier forces capturing him in between the sixth and seventh tournaments, are all events known to have triggered his transformation into Devil form.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: In 6, he shares the Big Bad spot with both Kazuya and Azazel. He and Kazuya are the two "evil stars" that collide and awaken Azazel, the Greater-Scope Villain and true final boss of the game.
  • Big Eater: His character episode ending in 8 has him eating several large spoonfuls of peas in his mouth made by his mother.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: The fourth generation of a family that just doesn't quite see eye-to-eye... to say the least.
  • Blessed with Suck: A "child of destiny"? A more accurate descriptor would be a "child of suck". He seems to have inherited no spiritual powers from Jun, instead being plagued with the cursed blood of the Mishimas. At the very least, Jun's influence tempers his demonic tendencies to a certain degree.
  • Book Ends: In his debut appearance, he uses a combination of Mishima-style karate and Kazama-style martial arts before unlearning them in favor of a traditional karate based on the Kyokushin style due to Heihachi's betrayal. In his final battle with Kazuya in 8, he re-learns the Mishima and Kazama styles, and combines them altogether with his current stylenote .
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Jin is the Brooding Boy to Xiaoyu's Gentle Girl.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Using the purification powers from his Kazama heritage, Jin is able to purge his father and himself of the Devil gene entirely. Despite the two now being like any other human, both Jin and Kazuya are still some of the most renowned martial artists in the world. Jin proves himself to be on par with his father and even surpass him in their last fight in 8.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Lampshaded by Miguel in the latter's Tekken 7 Character Episode, where Jin does not recognize him at all, and Miguel figured he wouldn't. He's just understandably pissed that his sister was killed in one of the Zaibatsu's bombings with this kind of attitude.
  • Byronic Hero: Jin is a very quiet, standoffish individual who has severe trauma brought upon by his mother's apparent death, his grandfather shooting him in the head, and his father being absent from his life and being a horrendous criminal. It doesn't help he was constantly denying the devil inside himself, believing he nor anyone else with the Devil gene should exist. That said, he's comparatively much kinder than both Heihachi and Kazuya and being raised by Jun helped him grow up as a relatively normal boy. And for all his crimes later on, it was all well-intended as he wanted to save the world from his paternal family and the Devil gene even if his actions were a bit extreme.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: In Tekken 8, he confronted Kazuya about how his existence is bringing turmoil to the world. But Kazuya calls out on Jin for starting the war and sacrificing the lives that he had done. Jin knows Kazuya is right, but unlike him, Jin was not seeking world domination, he is trying to put an end to the Mishima Bloodline and eliminating the Devil Gene in his blood.
  • Celibate Hero:
    • Whereas Jin does show affection for Xiaoyu (addressing her by the pet name of "Xiao" and presumably warning her of Heihachi before 4) and is (hopefully) aware of her affections, he can't return them simply because he refuses to let his lineage screw with the lives of anyone else.
    • Subverted come 8 after reuniting with Xiaoyu. At the end of the game he has all but rekindled his relationship with her.
  • Character Catchphrase: Since he debuted in Tekken 5, Devil Jin has only said one phrase: "Kyoufu wo oshiete yarou" (translation found further down; see "Power Echoes"). Human Jin started saying it during one of his pre-fight intros in Tekken 6 as well (pointing out that he's no longer as goody-goody as he used to be).
  • Character Development: Even in the pre-release trailers of 8, a lot of his spoken lines show an entirely different attitude compared to his villainous persona since 6. He is more polite in his intro quotes, and also he now declares that "Strength isn't everything!" in one of his win poses as opposed to his old belief that "Power is everything."
  • Characterization Marches On: In 3, Jin is pretty cocky and confident, and while he mourns the loss of his mother, he was pretty content living with his grandfather. Of note, 3 is the only game in which Jin smiled. However, starting with his ending in 3, where Heihachi betrayed him, he is much more brooding, distrustful, and reserved.
  • Clashing Cousins: An one-sided version with Asuka. Since 6 she has been very dedicated to fighting Jin and ending all the damage and misery he is causing to the world with the Mishima Zaibatsu. Jin, however, doesn't care for her and treats her with the same indifference he displays toward his recurring rival, Hwoarang. Though in 8, when he tells Kazuya that he has allies with him, Asuka is shown in the flashbacks, a stark contrast to her intentions in 6.
  • The Comically Serious: Mostly no, but a few goofy endings make him suffer indignities which clashes hard with his usual serious behavior, such as Lee's 6 ending and, most infamously, Asuka's 5 ending, where he accidentally shoves his head between her breasts, gets up while wondering what's going on, gets punched by Asuka and is just left confused over what just happened.
  • Composite Character: In a sense.
    • In his debut, Jin drew heavily from the playstyles of both his parents before settling into a style unique to him. This is even reflected in his hairstyle, a mixture of Kazuya's back hair spike with front bangs similar to Jun's. Although since 4 Jin has now abandoned his initial fighting style, which he borrowed from both of his parents, Devil Jin has retained it, however, with the addition of some moves from Tag 1 Devil.
    • Come 8 where Jin has accepted his Devil Gene, he reclaims several of Devil Jin's moves back into his own moveset, coming full circle.
  • The Corruption: The Devil Gene is slowly eating away at Jin. His first scene in 7 has him unwillingly transforming amidst a crowd of people.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Heihachi's betrayal leaves him so bitter and mistrustful of others, choosing to be distant and indifferent to others, due to how much he trusted his grandfather at that point. He also becomes someone who sees the world as twisted and beyond saving.
  • Death Seeker: It's very clear that he intends to extinguish himself after getting rid of Heihachi and Kazuya in 4—it's the only way he can think of to obliterate the Devil Gene. In 6, getting himself and Azazel killed simultaneously is the ultimate step in this plan. It doesn't work, as he's still alive in 7, which also shows that he's not selective regarding who kills him, as shown in Miguel's ending. Come Tekken 8, this becomes subverted after he comes to terms with his Devil Gene and one of his dialogues during his last fight against Kazuya specified that he wants to live now.
  • Demoted to Extra: Tekken 7 drastically reduces Jin's relevance, being unconscious throughout the story. It's not until the end of it where he reappears, getting set up to be the protagonist of 8.
  • Determinator: Willing to do whatever it takes to eradicate the Devil Gene, the entire world be damned. And not even his returning mother, who came to stop him, would deter him. Despite that, this is a trait Alisa praised him for in 8.
  • Divergent Character Evolution: When Jin first appeared in 3, he mechanically evoked his parents' movelists, mainly pulling from Kazuya's overall. Come 4, and with Kazuya returning to the mainline series, Jin gained a distinctly new fighting style that was more original to him than either Kazuya or Jun. From 5 onwards, he became playable as both his human and Devil selves: regular Jin continued to build upon his moveset from 4 whereas Devil Jin was meant to tap more into his Mishima roots and harken back to his time in 3 and Tag. However, both forms share some overlap and are meant to be well-rounded characters that can excel in any situation.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After enduring loss, betrayal, rage, pain, and a series of seemingly endless battles, it's safe to say that Jin really earned this trope. He manages to make peace with his literal inner devil, who revealed itself to only wanting to help Jin accomplish his goals. He decides to let go of his hatred towards his father, spares him, and is able to erase the Devil gene within him and Kazuya. And, while he's still not done undoing the damage he brought onto the world, he has no qualms doing so. With his new allies supporting him and his mother confirmed to be alive and well, Jin is in a lot better headspace than ever before.
  • Easily Forgiven:
    • Downplayed. The end of the Mishima Saga of 7 sees that Jin will be the one to end Kazuya, even though the war was his fault. Lars seems somewhat accepting that working with Jin is the best chance of putting things to rest. Played straight in 8 where Lars not only becomes his Cool Uncle alongside Lee, but serves as The Lancer during the story, even calling Jin his "Trump Card". By the finale, his forgiveness ends up earned for the most part, as even though Jin did start the war, he took responsibility and saw things through until the war's end, where circumstances had ultimately resulted in Kazuya and G Corporation turning out to be much eviler than he ever was as head of the Zaibatsu.
    • On Eddy's part, he doesn't bear any ill will towards Jin when the latter failed to keep his promise to save Eddy's master.
Jin: I'm sorry about your Master.
Eddy: There's nothing for you to be sorry about.
  • The Eeyore: Throughout the series, Jin becomes increasingly dour and brooding, culminating in his ambition to finish off the entire Mishima line, including himself, to prevent the Devil Gene from spreading any further.
  • Enemy Within: Constantly has to fight off the influence of his Devil Gene as he tries to rid himself of it and the world of it in general.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas:
    • Even after his Face–Heel Turn, he still holds his mother in high regard if Tag 2 is anything to go by. This is also one of the few things he inherits from Kazuya, as Kazumi's death was the event that kickstarted the feud between Kazuya and Heihachi.
    • Note that a vision of her is enough to stop him (while he's transforming into his Devil form, no less) from killing his grandfather back in his 4 ending. As he lets go of Heihachi, before flying away, he even says, "Thank my mother, Jun Kazama."
  • Even Evil Can Be Loved:
    • Xiaoyu has romantic feelings for him even after Jin became a war criminal.
    • Jun in 8 is forgiving towards him as well, but considering she still loves Kazuya, any other reaction from her would be weird.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Despite his intentions in causing destruction to awaken Azazel in 6 (even to the point he turns Alisa's safe mode to stop Lars from following him), he wouldn't directly kill anyone (expect Azazel) in cold-blooded fashion. The worst thing he did was banish Kuma in the wilderness via a Helicopter drop, and even after Kuma survived, Jin never went after him again.
  • Fallen Hero: Like his father before him, Jin has gone from primary good guy of the series to the Big Bad of 6. While he turns out to be more of a Well-Intentioned Extremist compared to Heihachi and Kazuya, he ironically ends up becoming more of a menace than either of them ever were, with his plan to plunge the world into chaos to awaken Azazel resulting in the deaths of millions of innocents. He also becomes increasingly cold and ruthless in his goals, a far cry from the noble hero he once was.
  • Fatal Flaw:
    • Come 8, it turns out to be his suicidal self-loathing. After the awakening of his Devil Gene, he's spent his life seeking to sacrifice himself alongside whichever evil is currently threatening the world because he believes himself to be a monster and thinks he's too dangerous to stay alive. This culminates in him plunging the world into a world war in 6 in order to awaken Azazel, sacrificing countless people because he believed he deserved to die a villain even if he was actually seeking to extinguish the Devil Gene. 8's story has him coming to the realization that he has a reason to live in the form of the friends who refused to leave his life, which allows him to finally control his Devil half and ironically gives him the means to finally purge the Devil Gene from himself and Kazuya for good.
    • Another major flaw of Jin's, as revealed in 8, is arrogance. Part of the reason he made the decisions he did over the years, outside of the trauma of being betrayed by his family, was the belief that he was the only one who could put a stop to the Devil Gene and the curse of the Mishima bloodline. This led him to become cold and hostile to everyone around him, rejecting their attempts at reaching out to him. Without anyone to keep his arrogance in check, he gave into the worst parts of his trauma and depression, becoming a nihilist who started World War III. And his arrogant decision to sacrifice himself ended up making things even worse, because he not only failed to kill Azazel, but he ended up comatose for several months, all the while Kazuya managed to kill Heihachi and claim the Zaibatsu for himself, putting him in prime position to dominate the world.
  • Final Boss: In 6. He's also the penultimate opponent who fought in that game's arcade mode.
  • Flunky Boss: When Jin is fought at the end of Tekken 6's Scenario Campaign, Lars and Raven must get past a few Zaibatsu soldiers standing in front of Jin.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration:
    • 4 sees Jin undergo Divergent Character Evolution and develop a unique, traditional Karate-based fighting style, in contrast to him borrowing much from Kazuya's playstyle in 3. While this happily coincides with Kazuya's return to the series, there is also a narrative reason for it: Jin has come to hate the Mishima bloodline and everything associated with it following the events of 3 enough that he has actively unlearned the Mishima style Karate Heihachi taught him.
    • Throughout 8's story mode, he begins to actively resist the Devil Gene's influence, which modifies his normal 8 moveset to exclude effects that involve his devil abilities. Even his Heat Smash and Rage Art have slightly altered animations and properties with these changes in mind.
    • The final battle of 8 turns this back; Jin choosing to accept the parts of himself he long hated has him return back to using the Mishima style, which he uses to combat Kazuya.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation:
    • In Tag 2 Jun is on the list of characters he dislikes, and that makes little sense when their special win pose has Jin smiling at her. His own ending also shows him getting so angry he turns into Devil Jin when she seemingly dies.
    • He is playable in 7 but in the canon of the story mode he spent the entire duration unconscious as a result of Scenario Campaign's ending in the previous game, only reawakening in the very last scene. This means his playable appearance is similar to Heihachi's in Tekken 5.
  • Gratuitous English: Thanks to Isshin Chiba, he speaks heavily-accented English to Hwoarang before he is fought as the latter's Final Boss in his story mode from 4. This was before he got English voice actors in other appearances.
    • One of his battle grunts is "chesuto", which's him saying "chest" with a Japanese accent. He uses it in his Corpse Thrust/d1 and his rage art, which the english subs erroneously translates as "Feel the fury". The Japanese subs show his line as "チェスト", which is Katakana for "chest".
  • Greater Need Than Mine: In Bloodline, he lets King have the prize money for winning the tournament after hearing King's reasons of joining the tournament from Julia.
  • Hated by All: He becomes this in 6 when he declares war through the Mishima Zaibatsu and is utterly reviled by many of the game's characters for this, which he was planning on. His true purpose of declaring war downplays this a bit against some who know the reasons, but even then we have characters like Lars who know the reason but still hate him, at least in 7.
Lars: I want to kill Jin too, but he's the key to ending this war.
    • In Tag 2 he's the second most hated character in the netsu system, with four characters who dislike him (Raven, Bruce, Anna, Baek), and fifteen characters who hate him (Mokujin, Jack-6, Steve, Miguel, Wang, Asuka, Lili, Kazuya, Lars, Ogre, Heihachi, Zafina, Christie, Dragunov, Kuma). Granted, it's still nowhere near Ogre's level, as Jin does have seven characters who like him (Bob, Nina, Xiaoyu, Jun, Alisa, Hwoarang, Eddy), while Ogre's most positive Netsu are only from DLC characters, who have neutral netsu with everyone.
    • This becomes subverted in 8. While a few members of the long-running cast do still hate him for what he did, the world at large has for the most part ceased focusing on that fact and is now pointed directly at Kazuya, who they saw as their savior against the Zaibatsu only to find out too late how the story with him goes. This goes in line with what the Journalist from the story in 7 mentions regarding the populace immediately forgetting that Kazuya was a Devil in favor of believing the Zaibatsu were insane after Kazuya framed them for downing one of their own satellites and destroying one of their own buildings.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Started out as good in 3, but turned evil in 6 after taking over the Mishima Zaibatsu. He's back to good at the end of 7. Devil Jin's Character Episode in 8 had him turning bad again after Lars, Alisa, and Lee are killed by the UN.
  • He's Back!: By Tekken 8, Character Development has set in for Jin and he's squarely back to being the confident Anti-Hero he was in 3. His new intro quote reflects this.
    "Power isn't everything."
  • The Hero: Zigzagged. Jin has gone through quite a journey throughout the franchise, being labeled as an Anti-Hero, Villain Protagonist, and even a Nominal Hero. But by the time he's in Tekken 8, he's decided to take accountability for his crimes, made peace with some of his former enemies, and has even lost his Death Seeker attitude as well as his desire to kill his father. Instead, he chooses to break his paternal family's cycle of violence and live for a better future for himself and his loved ones.
  • The Hero Dies: The Despair ending of 8 results in Kazuya killing him at the end of the last battle, and throwing his corpse off a cliff to Make Sure He's Dead.
  • Hero Protagonist: He's the main character for the majority of the series (specifically in 3, 4, 5, and 8), and constantly opposes both his father and grandfather in an effort to save the world from the Mishima bloodline.
  • Heroic Bastard: Kazuya and Jun never married, and considering how twisted the Mishima family is, it's probably for the best.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: His crusade against the Mishima Bloodline and the Devil Gene, has eventually turned him into as much of a monster as them (despite his good intentions) by also taking control of the Mishima Zaibatsu and plunging the world to chaos through his control. Even quotes the last part of Nietzsche's passage ("And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.") after the final battle with him in Scenario Campaign, understanding what his desperate gambit to erase Azazel had made him into.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: His outfit 7 is an all-leather ensemble with spikes.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: What he ultimately hopes to accomplish with the war he started in Tekken 6. His final act in Scenario Mode is the logical finalization of this. However, his survival in Tekken 7 affirms that it did not take.
  • Hijacked by Ganon: A rare heroic example. 4 heavily focuses on Kazuya's unexpected return from the dead and his quest to restore himself to his former glory. Kazuya is playable in the base roster to accentuate this, while Jin has to be unlocked. In canon, while Kazuya technically wins the match with Jin being kidnapped by Heihachi midway through it, Jin ultimately breaks free. He defeats both his father and grandfather, stopping their evil plans.
  • Home Stage:
    • Tiger Dojo, Tokyo is his personal arena in 3, a spacious training ground that serves his potential well. It returns in Tag with a day and night variant, and is alluded to in Tag 2 with Heihachi and Jinpachi’s boss stage.
    • Gargoyle’s Perch in 6 is his boss arena, and is reminiscent to the church that Devil Jin had as a home stage in Tekken 5. His throne room is high atop a tower that gazes upon all of the mass destruction that he has wrought. It returns in 8 as a part of Descent into Subconscious, which could also be considered his stage.
  • Hunk: Jin had been ripped and handsome since 4. It's also a case of He Is All Grown Up, as he was still a teenager in 3.
  • Hunter of Monsters: Jin has hunted down and killed several monsters, including Ogre, Jinpachi and Azazel.

    Tropes I-Z
  • Iconic Sequel Character: He's so integral to the franchise that it's easy to forget he wasn't in the first two games.
  • I Hate You, Vampire Dad: Has an intense hatred towards Kazuya, from whom he inherited the Devil Gene he so desperately fights to get rid of. The only reason why Jin doesn't finish off Kazuya's face is that that would go against what Jun taught him. This is no longer the case as for 8 due to his Character Development.
  • Image Song: "My Last Stand", the theme of Tekken 8, is essentially one for him to represent his Heel–Face Turn and unwavering resolve in not just atoning for his sins but also learning to make peace with his nature. An extended version of this plays during the final phase of Chapter 15 against Kazuya, coinciding with Jin now freely utilizing all of his fighting styles to finally defeat his father.
  • In the Hood: Wears a hoodie in Tekken 4 and Tekken 5 as his alternate outfit. Nearly at the level of Clothes Make the Legend. Tekken 7 shows him wearing a different, darker hoodie. His Tekken 4 hoodie makes a comeback in 7 as a bonus for the PS4 version of the game.
  • Invincible Hero: He's won more Iron Fist tournaments than any other character.
    • In 3 (his debut), Paul defeated regular Ogre but Ogre's transformation into True Ogre meant the tournament could continue (and Paul did not wait to fight True Ogre). Jin's arrival meant he could defeat True Ogre and be recognized as the official winner.
    • He did not technically win the fourth tournament. Heihachi defeated Kazuya in the finals but this was because Kazuya and Jin were scheduled to fight in the seventh stage of the tournament. However, Jin was kidnapped before the battle, automatically advancing Kazuya to the finals to face his father. Jin later defeats both of them at the Hon-Maru compound but this was after the tournament had concluded.
    • He advanced through the fifth tournament without using the Devil Gene, but ends up transforming into Devil Jin after being nearly beaten by Hwoarang. As Devil Jin, he defeats Jinpachi to become the official winner of the fifth tournament.
    • He hosts the sixth tournament as Zaibatsu CEO, but it's unclear when the tournament takes place since Scenario Campaign does not document the tournament, and Jin's actions in Scenario Campaign appear to replace the tournament canonically. The ending of Scenario Campaign appears to be canon, in which he battles Azazel to hopefully accomplish a Mutual Kill. Azazel is defeated, but Jin remains alive and still possesses the curse of the Devil Gene by the end. This ends up keeping him out of the events of 7 (although he is still playable, similar to Heihachi's status in 5) and he canonically returns as a participant in the events of 8.
    • This even crosses to other media. He is the protagonist of the live-action film, so naturally, he wins the tournament. But in Tekken: Blood Vengeance, he is merely a supporting character (the protagonist is Xiaoyu), yet is ultimately the one who saves the day again.
  • Involuntary Shapeshifting:
    • He has much less control over the Devil Gene than his father, causing him to transform into Devil Jin unwillingly. His first transformation was a Death-Activated Superpower as a reaction to Heihachi shooting him. In 4, he's forced by Kazuya to transform and seems to be in great pain throughout it, although remembering Jun snaps him back to reality. Finally, at the end of 5, he transforms in self-defense upon being defeated by Hwoarang and, unable to control it, curbstomps and hospitalized him.
    • It seems that sometime between 5 and 6, he has mastered the Gene. Devil Jin's iconic quote now creeps to his human form, possibly signifying that Jin is aware of the bloodlust inside him. In Tekken Tag Tournament 2, pairing Jin and his Devil form together enables a special tag command (u/b+TAG) that allows him to transform in or out of his devil form willingly (and winning as either will give a special victory animation where he changes form, depending on who won). Blood Vengeance, despite being non-canon, explicitly shows him in full control of his power (hence his blue/gold metallic form). Finally, The Stinger of 7's Story mode shows that he has finally, canonically, controlled it.
  • Irony:
    • Jin, a Devil Gene bearer, starts a war to "expunge the Devil's Blood".
    • He is considered the "Star of Hope" in Tekken 8. While Kazuya is still continuing World War III after the events of 6, that title is being given to the one that started it. Jin himself lampshades this.
    • Jin's hatred for his Devil Gene caused more harm to the world, without him using said power to cause untold damage, but accepting the Devil Gene actually brought back most of the peace to the world.
  • It's Not You, It's My Enemies: His relationship with Xiaoyu in a nutshell. Believe it or not, this is also the same reason why Hwoarang can never get that one good rematch out of him. 8 rectifies both of these over the course of the story, as Jin gives Hwoarang his rematch (in turn, being one of the catalysts for him coming to accept the Devil Gene which Hwoarang picks up a bit on) and eventually rekindles his relationship with Xiaoyu after defeating Kazuya.
  • Jack of All Stats:
    • Jin was somewhat of a starter Mishima in his debut, but ever since Tekken 4 and other games onwards, he became more focused on very-safe-zoning pokes for a solid counter-hit game, very good mixups, and having a decent-to-great stance system with one of the best personal parries in the series. However, this costs him a decent combo game (from both juggles and wall-carries), safe launchers (until Tekken 7) and a decent mixup game from his wavedash save for his other tools; Jin himself even lacks a standard 10-hit combo.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Perhaps his view on governments and religion is justified, as shown in Straw Nihilist below, they can't accomplish anything. It becomes a lot more apparent in 8 after Kazuya take over a lot of nations after his defeat of Heihachi, and even the UN is powerless to stop it.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: At best, he acts pretty aloof towards practically everyone around him, for all his noble intentions. Only his mother truly saw his softer side. In all seriousness, while Jin may be stoic and indifferent towards his friends, he does care about them, and he does not want them to get involved in his issues in relation with the Mishima bloodline and the Devil's curse in his veins. In 8, Jin had started to become less aloof and indifferent as the game goes on by getting over his issues, in which he had finally realized how much of a fool he had become over the course of the series. By the end after defeating Kazuya in their final battle, his heart of gold traits became a lot more prominent.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: Averted. You wouldn't blame anyone for thinking that Jin has gone insane, causing a war that killed many people unless you find out that it's not because he wants to take over the world, but rather awaken a demon that is the source of the Devil Gene. Sadly his sacrifice failed, but by 8 he strives to end the war he once started.
  • Last of His Kind: According to a Kazama family tree Lili finds in 8, Jin and Jun are the last living members of the Kazama's main branch. As Jun is effectively dead between 2 and 8 (she is put into a spiritual coma after Ogre's attack, only waking up after Jin has completely defeated Kazuya), this makes Jin the last living member for most of the series.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Unless we're supposed to believe he's a ghost, Tekken 7 confirms he survived his ordeal in Scenario Campaign.
  • Legacy Character: His moveset in 3 and Tag is Kazuya's moves with a bit of Jun's since they were not in 3. After that game's events and Kazuya's resurrection, Jin took on a different style of karate to forget the Mishima Style.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: 6 cements that he's no different to the other Mishimas, similarly taking control of the Mishima Zaibatsu to achieve his goals at the expense of others. However, he genuinely has noble intentions compared to his power-hungry paternal figures, actually starting out heroic despite being troubled before resorting to extreme means to achieve his goals, and he's ultimately the one to break the Mishima curse as for 8, accepting the Devil Gene as a part of himself and a power to protect, as well as getting over his intense hatred for them.
  • Like Parent, Like Spouse: His mother was a loving woman, who loved animals, could kick tons of ass and was determined to drag her dark and brooding love interest into the light, come hell or high water. Xiaoyu is friendly to pretty much everybody, is shown to be good to animals like Panda and Sugar, and is determined to drag Jin's dark and brooding self into the light, whether he likes it or not. Coincidence? Yeah right.
  • Manipulative Bastard:
    • Sparks global conflict and earns much of the cast's ire, including people he met in the previous tournaments, so he can destroy the Devil Gene once and for all.
    • Most notably, he manipulates Eddy, one of his contemporaries from the third tournament, into his service by promising to cure Christie's grandfather. Of course, Jin had no intention of keeping that promise since creating hatred and negativity was the whole point of starting World War III in the first place.
  • Man of Wealth and Taste: He wears a longcoat in his ending in 5 and throughout 6.
  • Master of All: When he utilizes all 3 of the fighting styles he's learned over the years at the same time against Kazuya in the final battle of 8, Jin effectively becomes this, gaining all the best possible aspects of all 3 styles. He gains the power and versatility of the Mishima style, the agility and defensive capabilities of the Kazama style, and the straightforwardness of traditional Okinawan karate to tie the two styles together even further.
  • Meaningless Villain Victory: As well-intentioned as his motivations were, his desperate gambit to end the Devil Gene in 6 failed miserably. He plunged the world into a pointless, devastating war that destroyed millions of lives to awaken Azazel, the supposed originator of the Devil Gene, with an enormous amount of negative energy, but killing Azazel ultimately did nothing to eliminate the Devil Gene. Not only that, Jin's Heroic Sacrifice to defeat Azazel didn't stick, so he's forced to live with the consequences of his actions. Worse still, a piece of Azazel survives through Zafina's arm and is slowly taking over her mind.
  • Meet the New Boss: His ending in 5 sees him take over the Mishima Zaibatsu from Jinpachi. For his own reasons, he ends up sparking global conflict in 6.
  • Momma's Boy: While Jin acts cold and distant to most people, even those close to him, his mother, Jun Kazama, is the exception. Jin loved and was close to his mother, being raised by her in the wilderness for 15 years. Her supposed death at the hands of Ogre was the main reason Jin entered the third tournament.
  • Morality Chain: By 8, Lars and Lee, his half and adoptive uncles become this. They seem to be the only members of the Mishima Family Jin doesn't actively hate (except for 6 where Lars rebelled against Jin due to starting the War and Jin initially mocks Lars for being a Robo Sexual). Best shown in Devil Jin's ending where the UN refuses to team up with Yggdrasil and fire lasers at all their bases, killing Lars, Lee and Alisa, causing Jin to fully succumb to his Devil form to seek vengeance for killing the former three.
  • Morality Chain Beyond the Grave: His mother, Jun, acts as this due to her teachings, while he thinks she's dead as per 3, although her influence varies at different points. At its strongest it kept him from killing Kazuya and Heihachi but it seems to have ebbed during 6 as he's more interested in killing Azazel to allay the world of the Devil Gene and will stop at nothing to bring it about. He also holds no compunctions against killing Heihachi and Kazuya, deciding that his mission to end the Mishima bloodline cannot be stayed because of Jun's teachings. By 8 he seems to have cooled down considerably — although his special intro and victory scene against his mother does have him say that he won't set aside his ambitions merely because she stands in his way, suggesting his experience during 6 and 7 has given him a personal sense of moral growth that goes beyond his mother's influence.
  • Morality Pet:
    • Ling Xiaoyu, a former classmate in the Mishima Polytechnical school and a close friend of his. Outside of his mother, Xiaoyu is the only other person he even has fondness for as his cynicism progressively got worse every game that passes. He also has an Affectionate Nickname for her, calling her "Xiao" on occasion. She tries to follow him everywhere he goes, up to the point she wants to stop him from committing evil in 6, similar to Jun's mission to redeem Kazuya. Each time Jin rejects her offers for help, and it's not even because he doesn't want it, he just wants her to be safe. When battling him as Devil Jin in Scenario Campaign as Xiaoyu, he experiences a noticeable discomfort as his connection with her is influencing it.
    • To a lesser degree, Hwoarang is this. Hwoarang my be his main rival in the saga, but Jin shows a degree of respect for him. Being tied in the tournament in 3, Hwoarang has been determined to defeat Jin in every subsequent game. He may have been defeated in 5 but he holds no hard feelings for Hwoarang, unfortunately he lost control of his Devil form and hospitalized Hwoarang as a result. Come 8 however, Jin is now more willing to spar with his rival, a sentiment the latter returns. Like Xiaoyu, Devil Jin feels discomfort in the Scenario Campaign battle while Hwoarang is the player character.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Has the perfect combination of Hunk and Pretty Boy and a smooth, deep voice. No wonder Xiaoyu is so smitten.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: Of the remaining members of the Mishima family, he is the In-Between to Lars' Nice and Kazuya's mean. Jin is not overly idealistic like Lars but he is less of a Jerkass compared to Kazuya.
  • Nightmare Sequence: Suffers from one in 4 after being sedated by the Tekken Force and imprisoned at Hon-Maru. Specifically, he's tormented by visions of Kazuya telling him to give in to his hatred of him.
  • Not Quite Dead: He is shown to have survived his supposed Heroic Sacrifice against Azazel. However, this didn't rid him of the Devil gene. 7 reveals that it originated from Kazumi, and that part of Azazel remained. 8 would then confirm that Azazel had imbued Kazumi and her clan with it for generations.
  • Only I Can Kill Him: 8's story mode presents Jin as the only one who stands a chance at defeating Kazuya, even after his initial attempt to do so fails. Other characters such as Lars, Claudio and Reina are teased as being able to match him but they are all unsuccessful, especially after he absorbs Azazel, leaving Jin as the last hope.
  • Optional Boss: Can replace Heihachi as the mid-boss of 7 (but not Fated Retribution) if certain conditions are met. It is possible to meet a more powerful version of Jin in the Treasure Battle as well.
  • Perpetual Frowner: You can count how many times Jin smiles with one hand. Two CGI artworks in 3 and 6 depict him smiling (though the latter is more of a Psychotic Smirk). There's also his ending in 4, where he flashes a smile of relief after managing to refrain from killing Heihachi, and Hwoarang's ending in from the same game, where he openly smiles at Hwoarang's jokes and might laugh if the two of them aren't being targeted at by the Korean military.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • He’s usually aloof to most people but Xiaoyu is the one of the few he consistently shows his softer side to. The most notable instance is in 4 where he anonymously warned her of Heihachi's intentions and advised Xiaoyu that if she wants to make her dreams come true then she should make it happen herself.
    • Despite his coldness to Alisa, he still ordered her to live her own life after he and Azazel were gone.
Jin: After that monster and I are gone, do as you wish.
  • Power Incontinence: Initially, Jin cannot control his actions while in Devil form, becoming a superpowered rabid beast lashing out furious blows and Eye Beams at everyone and everything around him, until he passes out. The fact that he transforms unwillingly, by extreme anger or when he sees himself threatened, and that both Kazuya and Heihachi are seeking him out and deliberately pressing his Berserk Buttons, doesn't help things either. In 8, however, he has obtained enough control to harness the Devil's power but not succumb to it, drawing it out just enough to spawn one wing but closing it off when he no longer needs to tap into it.
  • Power of Trust: In 3, but it doesn't end well. While Jun is the one to suggest that Jin find Heihachi if anything were to happen to her, Heihachi only uses Jin as bait for Ogre to further his ambitions. When Jin wins the tournament? Tekken Force members unceremoniously gun down Jin, Heihachi himself dealing the final headshot. Had it not been for Devil Jin's awakening, Jin would have died. Hence, his hatred for his paternal side of the family; Jin's profile states that he specifically hates deception.
  • Power Tattoo: The opening of 3 shows the part of his arm that it's on glowing and him reacting seemingly in pain, implying that it's physical evidence of the power inside him. Despite the tattoo's design remaining an iconic part of his character (with the design featuring on flags when he takes control of the Mishima Zaibatsu in Tekken 6), its actual presence on his body is never actually elaborated upon throughout the series.
  • Power Trio: Forms this dynamic with Hwoarang and Xiaoyu in Bloodline, down to them helping him in the final battle against Ogre.
  • Properly Paranoid: In regards to Reina. He allows her to join Yggdrasil, though not without suspicion since she utilizes the Mishima Fighting style. At the end, these suspicions were not unwarranted, as she turns out to be Heihachi's illegitimate daughter, as well as having the Devil Gene.
  • Protagonist Journey to Villain: Regardless of his reasons for doing it, he plunged the entire world into war based on selfishness and a theory and commits many villainous actions unrelated to his goal including trying to execute his own uncle, who is the Token Good Teammate of the family, and cruelly forcing him to fight and kill his Love Interest (it's not like he wasn't enjoying it). Jin himself recognizes what his actions have turned him into, even though he's the only one who could have done what he did, and the entirety of the eighth game follows him taking responsibility for and trying to make up for them.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Disturbingly, he imitates his father's iconic smile when he ascends to the Mishima Zaibatsu throne in 5, hinting at his dark plans that would come to fruition in the sequel. It's one of the only times Jin smiles, period.
  • Punny Name: In Japanese, Jin is pronounced exactly as the English word "gene" (jeen). With that in mind, say "Devil Jin" out loud...
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: Jin's Rage Art in Tekken 7 (which is actually a repurposing of an item move animation from Tekken Tag Tournament 2). He used the same attack against Heihachi in the Blood Vengeance animated movie.
  • Redemption Demotion: He fully cements his role as hero in 8, which incidentally coincides with him losing the Devil Gene alongside Kazuya by the end. However, it's ultimately zig-zagged in that, while Jin has lost the powers of a demi-god, as a human combatant, he's arguably now the strongest, thanks to a mix of combining every technique he's learned over the years into the ultimate fighting style and possessing the raw determination to never yield no matter how much he gets beaten.
  • Redemption Earns Life: After 7 years of enduring the apparent death of his mother, betrayal by his grandfather, discovering his father is alive and is the reason he's saddled with the Devil Gene, defeating and sending his great-grandfather back to the afterlife, and then plunging the whole world into chaos just so he can try to sacrifice himself to destroy the progenitor of the Devil Gene, Jin finally achieves his redemption in 8. He finally comes to terms with who he is as a person and accepts every aspect of his heritage as a part of who he is, no longer afraid of using the Mishima or Kazama styles and utilizing both the Devil Gene and the Kazama clan's spiritual powers in order to purify both himself and his father, defeating the latter without killing him and staying true to his mother Jun's teachings. For this, he's rewarded with the will to live the rest of his life in peace with the people he cares about, instead of trying to get himself killed for the good of the world beforehand.
  • Relationship Upgrade: At the end of 8's story, after Jin finally regains the will to live and in peace with himself, it is implied that he reciprocates Xiaoyu's feelings for him.
  • Rival Turned Evil: In a technical sense, he is this to Hwoarang.
  • Rogue Protagonist: In 6, when he plunges the world into a war between the Zaibatsu and the G Corporation, becoming a much more morally ambiguous character and facilitating the introduction of a new Hero Protagonist, Lars.
  • Secret A.I. Moves:
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Jin invokes this by purposefully trying to fulfill the ancient prophecy of Azazel's awakening, which states that two evil stars will collide and throw the world into darkness. Ironically, in his quest to destroy the Devil Gene, Jin may have only furthered the Devil's interests by letting the prophecy come true. Since Jin survived his attack on Azazel, he has become just as reviled as his father and appears to have less control over the Devil Gene than ever. To make matters worse, Zafina's profile from 7 reveals that Azazel is still alive. In 8 he learned how to control the devil gene after coming to terms with his sins and past, accepting it as a part of himself.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Invoked. He wants to kill Kazuya to eradicate the Devil Gene. He even plans on killing himself afterwards if he has to.
  • Shadow Archetype: To Miguel come 7. Both went after the killer of the loved one they were very close with (Jin went after Ogre for Jun's supposed death and Miguel went after Jin for the death of his sister). Jin succeeded in killing Ogre which resulted in him becoming a Hunter of Monsters but Miguel relented when he saw Jin in a lifeless state. Basically, Jin is the type of person Miguel could be if he succeeded in his quest for vengeance. Devil Jin's Character Episode also had Jin seeking vengeance after Lars, Alisa, and Lee are killed by the UN, which leads to Devil Jin taking control and blowing up a good chunk of the Earth.
    • Miguel's ending in Tag 2 demonstrates it as well. He threatens to kill a gang member until he was stopped by that said member's supposed girlfriend or sister. Then he realized he would be no better than Jin if he continued.
  • Shipper on Deck: An extremely cruel one near the end of Scenario Campaign for Lars and Alisa. After Alisa gets shut down during her battle with Lars, Jin watches it all unfold and mocks Lars' feelings for a "useless piece of junk". This enrages Lars, and cue The Final Battle.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: During his final battle with Kazuya in 8, he used this trope twice. Such as telling Kazuya that power isn't everything, what a fight is truly about, and his true purpose in living his life.
  • Slouch of Villainy: At the end of his Tekken 5 ending, Jin plops himself down on the Zaibatsu throne in the traditional pose. Likewise, when you arrive to fight him in Tekken 6's Arcade mode, he's also sitting the same way.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Not that he'll admit it, but Jin is this with Xiaoyu. He's been laser-focused on trying to get rid of the Devil Gene that he's not been able to keep in contact with the people that care for him. Though it's not like Jin lost his fondness for them, Xiaoyu especially, he just wants them to be out of harm's way and there are subtle hints that he returns the feelings Xiaoyu has for him, it's just that he's unwilling to let her join cause he puts her well-being first. Finally averted in 8 when they reunite for the first time in years.
  • Start of Darkness: Though not immediate unlike Kazuya, he too is a victim of Heihachi's horrible parenting, and his betrayal turns him hateful towards anything related to the Mishimas and Devil Gene, being hellbent to purge the world of them (including himself) by any means, eventually resorting into plunging the world into chaos, while becoming cold and distant towards other people in general by pushing them away.
  • The Stoic: His emotions are rarely displayed. In some instances, his intense stoicism is exaggerated into The Comically Serious.
  • Straw Nihilist: He reveals to Lars in 6 that he views the world as twisted and beyond saving, where governments, religions, and people of this world can't accomplish anything, because people are ruled under an iron fist, living in fear of those with power. He seems to think only getting rid of those Too Powerful to Live (such as himself and Azazel) can save it.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Only a handful of characters like Xiaoyu see Jin's deredere side, and even then it's fairly subdued.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: 6'0"/183cm and easy on the eyes.
  • This Is Reality: One of his win quotes in 6 & 7. He stops saying it in 8 as a result of becoming The Atoner.
  • Took a Level in Cynic: Jin was already cynical due to his mother's disappearance, but after Jin gets betrayed by Heihachi during the events of 3, Jin became even more distrustful. As a result, he strived to unlearn EVERYTHING about the Mishima Style martial arts and stuck with his iconic Kyokushin Karate moveset from here on out, and became very distant and aloof on others.
  • Took a Level in Idealism: After going on a journey into his Subconsciousness, Jin finally accepts the Devil Gene as a part of himself after spending the last four games outright HATING it. Not only that, during his final battle with Kazuya, he utilizes the Mishima Fighting style, the very style he rejected due to Heihachi's betrayal.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: After two games as a troubled-but-ultimately-heroic protagonist in Tekken 6 Jin turns the corner, begins embracing the evil legacy in his genes, and becomes cold and merciless. He becomes laser-focused on his goal of destroying Azazel and disregards life and peace as long as it gets him there, quotes Devil Jin's infamous "I will show you the meaning of fear!", celebrates his victories by disrespectfully dismissing his opponent as "a joke" without even a glance as he walks away, treats his subordinates like crap and openly taunts Lars's heroic objectives and feelings for Alisa. Whether it is a Heel act to get everyone's ire is debatable at best. However...
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After a few games of being a brooding, extremely ruthless Villain Protagonist, Jin not only turns a new leaf in 8, but also much more amicable and peaceful than even his earlier self, being willing to open up more to others, like enthusiastically sparring with his rival Hwoarang or uncle Lars, as well as respectfully sparring Xiaoyu.
  • Tragic Hero: At first. 6 has him be a villain with hidden motivations, though.
  • Turn Out Like His Father: And grandfather as well. For his hatred towards Heihachi and Kazuya due to their cruelty, he becomes just as much of a monster as them, by taking over the Mishima Zaibatsu and using it to cause untold harm to others like they once did to achieve his goals. As shown in A Lighter Shade of Black above, Jin is more of a Well-Intentioned Extremist than the former two.
  • Unwitting Pawn: In 3, Jin is used by Heihachi for the latter's own plans to lure in and capture Ogre. He didn't expect Jin to kill Ogre, though.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Jin was a kind, sweet boy who lived a rather happy life with his mother Jun until she was seemingly killed by Ogre. After getting revenge and killing Ogre he was betrayed by Heihachi and gunned down by him and his soldiers, which caused his Devil Gene to awaken. Since then, he has nothing but hatred for his paternal side of the family and will do anything to be rid of them and his curse, even if it means putting the world in danger.
  • Villain Protagonist: In the original release of 6... sort of. However, he is upstaged in the Bloodline Rebellion update by Lars, an all-around Hero Protagonist.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: The karate gi by default. Tekken 4 slightly compounds this with an open jacket, which exposes his torso. By extension, Devil Jin, too, until Tekken 7: FR.
  • Was It Really Worth It?: His character arc is driven by his increasingly extreme measures to ensure the termination of the Devil Gene, culminating in him practically destroying the world just for a slim chance to kill the originator of the cursed bloodline. Nina ultimately says that it's not for anyone else to judge whether Jin was wrong to take the risk. However, the sequel reveals that the plan failed, leaving Jin to live with the consequences of his decisions. Not that he was planning to avoid any if he succeeded. Lars also lampshades this in the Tekken 6 recap of Tekken 8.
Lars: Waging war by his own hand, he filled the world with negative emotions and resurrected Azazel... He would save the world through his and Azazel's mutual destruction. That was Jin's true aim. But was that really the right course of action?
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Getting rid of the Devil Gene is a pretty heroic goal considering how destructive and dangerous it's proven to be, and to his credit, he designed his plan to get rid of Azazel with the intention of there being some form of consequence in it for all the chaos and destruction he needed to achieve it, even if he did end up surviving it. Of course, that chaos and destruction are what contribute to the "Extremist" portion of this trope.
  • What If the Baby Is Like Me: Another reason why he couldn't form a true relationship with Xiaoyu for fear of their possible children inheriting the Devil Gene, if not the cruelty, callousness, sociopathy, and miserly behavior from Jin's forefathers. And what we've seen from Kazumi and Reina, the womenfolk aren't that much better either.
  • When He Smiles: After 3, Jin became incredibly brooding and had found no reason to smile. Tag 2 gives a special win pose with his mother, Jun. Though their backs turned against each other, they still turned their heads, giving each other a faint smile. After his reunion with Xiaoyu come 8, he gives a big one when hearing Xiaoyu's dream to make everyone in the world happy with amusement parks. This makes it the first time since his debut that he gives out a genuine smile, as he has been progressively more cynical beforehand.
  • White Sheep: he's generally the Token Good Teammate as far as the Mishima clan goes as he was raised pacifistic, and while struggling with his inner demons, he has others' best interests in mind. Until 6, though while he does have blood on his own hands, it was for the greater good, and 8 has him fall right back into his gentler ways. He's only really outdone in this regard by Jinpachi, Lars, and Lee.
  • Wrong Assumption:
    • Jin's journey started when he thought that Jun had been slain by Ogre since he couldn't find her body. Jun turns out to be alive; she just lured Ogre to a hidden place within Yakushima and drove him away, but she fell into a coma for years. During that fated encounter, Jin had no idea about that place's existence.
    • In 6 he believes that killing Azazel will get rid of the Devil Gene, and he tries to kill him to do so, but the ending of the game the Devil Gene is still around, and in 7 Zafina's return also makes it clear Azazel isn't dead too.
    • In 8 after purifying himself and Kazuya from the Devil Gene, he believes the Devil Gene is no longer in this world, but not only Reina has the Devil Gene, logically Hachijos who are around, and whoever else Azazel granted his powers to who still have descendants, all should have the Devil Gene too.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Walks down this path in 6 by sparking a global conflict. However, this is all a part of his real plan to destroy the supposed "progenitor" of the Devil Gene so that he can be rid of his family's curse (and probably himself for everything he had to do in the process, along with what he could still do if he isn't stopped). He indirecty also becomes this in Devil Jin's Character Episode in 8, after Lars, Alisa, and Lee are killed by the UN.
  • The Worf Effect: In 8, Jin faces Kazuya for the first time since 4 on a one on one battle. He initially could put Kazuya on the ropes when they fought man-to-man, showing that his combat skills are still a match for Kazuya's, and had the upper hand against an untransformed Kazuya. However, as soon as Kazuya unleashed his Devil Form, Kazuya quickly overwhelms him, demonstrating that while Jin might have gained better control of his Devil powers now, he is still outmatched by his father when it comes to using his Devil powers.
  • Worth Living For: The climax of his character arc in 8 sees Jin finally regain the will to live after reconciling the aspects of himself he feared and despised for so long, finally understanding his mother's teachings and embracing his desire to survive for the sake of the people he cares about, and who care about him in return,
  • You Killed My Mother: Against Ogre. However, he didn't know that Jun actually survived until her return in 8.

Devil Jin

Black Wings of Ruin
Classic Outfit

恐怖を教えてやろう! Kyōfu wo oshiete yarō. note
Fighting Style: Mishima-style Fighting Karate and Kazama-style Traditional Martial Arts
Appears in: 5-8, Tag, Tag 2

Jin's evil alter ego, Devil Jin utilizes the original Mishima style moveset Jin originally had in 3. Compared to Kazuya and Heihachi, Devil Jin is more well-rounded but also more punishable. Devil Jin is also capable of flight and firing lasers, though both options are incredibly risky to pull off in a match.

Devil Jin isn't normally a separate persona, but rather Jin going berserk from his Devil Gene, and his playable appearances a "what-if" scenario of how Jin views his Devil form in his mind. 8, however, reveals his true nature.

    Tropes
  • Ascended Demon: In two stages in 8. First, he develops a single white wing as Jin stops using rage when letting it out. For the second stage see Angel Jin below.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: His canonical appearance seems to be the physical manifestation of Jin's inner self and desire. Jin being consumed by anger and hatred made Devil Jin an aggressive, destructive, and homicidal being. Jin being in denial about his self and past puts him at odds with his devil self in controlling his body, and his devil self calls Jin out of his rejection, and Jin's change and growth seem to affect him as well, with him becoming more noble after Jin lets go of his vengeance and desires to protect, as well as being able to fully control his devil form.
  • Ax-Crazy: Devil Jin lacks the restraint or scruples of his normal self, becoming erratic and violent, and relishing in the violence he causes.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: How his Battle Intro against Jin in 8 is probably supposed to be interpreted, with Devil Jin attempting to consume Jin's mind and Jin rejecting it to fight for control of his psyche.
  • Battle Strip: His 5 ending has him breaking off his gauntlets after his further transformation.
  • Beating A Dead Player: One of Devil Jin's outros sees him telekinetically strangling his opponent to death.
  • Bootstrapped Leitmotif: As the sub-boss of 5, he's fought in the Cathedral (the Snow Castle variant in Dark Resurrection applies as well); to this effect, both of the stages' themes ("Antares" and "Snow Castle") are commonly associated with him in this respect. "Antares" is recycled wholesale for those who use Devil Jin's fighting style in Soulcalibur V, while both are sampled in the Descent Into Subconscious stage in 8. In the story mode, both themes play when Jin battles Devil Jin; "Snow Castle" in particular plays when the player switches to Devil Jin to coincide with the persona's Heel–Face Turn.
  • Cast from Hit Points: In 5's Devil Within, if you transform into DJ, any of his attacks will do this, but they hit a lot harder and he can spam lasers for an easy win against groups of enemies and even bosses.
  • Chained by Fashion: He has chains wrapped around various parts of his body, including his waist and left ankle. In 8, he appears to use them in combat as well.
  • Criss-Cross Attack: Devil Jin's 7 Rage Art involves him flying through his enemy before finish them off with a laser.
  • Dark Is Evil: Devil Jin is psychotic and Ax-Crazy, with demonic and menacing appearence.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: However, in 8, it's revealed that the Devil Gene gives power to fulfill a desire, but that desire does not have to be evil. Jin letting go of his hatred and changing his desire to protect what's precious to him made him work towards achieving that, becoming good as well, while retraining one demonic wing and menacing looks.
  • Defence Mechanism Superpower: What Devil Jin's canonical appearances have been up until 8. He becomes active whenever Jin is either stressed or unconscious, and acts on his own accord, lashing out at anything that could be perceived as a threat to Jin. It's confirmed as for 8, where Jin realizes that his Devil self has always actively been trying to protect him, even if it went a bit too far at times.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Devil Jin seems to get this in 6 when playing as the main character in Scenario Campaign. Most people think he's in costume (King II and Marduk think he's a new pro wrestler.), while others recognize him as Jin Kazama and want to beat the crap out of him. Only the Mishimas and Nina know what's going on with him.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: This version of Jin appeared in 3 in Jin's ending, but wasn't playable until 5.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Jin was already a prodigious combatant, but with the Devil Gene unleashed, he's much more dangerous. In the Story Modes prior to 8 his only loss is to Hwoarang, and even then the fight was interrupted before it could be definitively ended. The only opponent to consistently give him trouble is his even-eviler counterpart Devil Kazuya.
  • Enemy Within: In 8, Devil Jin is the manifestation Jin's own fears about being consumed by the power of the Devil Gene, and how he wants total control over Jin's body. Coming to terms with it as part of himself and changing his desire to a more noble one consciously causes them to no longer be enemies. Best highlighted by Devil Jin's persona throughout this process, as he slowly drops the manic evil front to achieve Jin's renewed sense of purpose.
  • Evil Laugh: In one of his win poses. He's a lot more prone to this in 8, letting one out during his selection screen pose and during his Rage Art.
  • Fallen Angel: Unlike Devil Kazuya's purple demon appearance, Devil Jin resembles a fallen angel. His appearance in 8 takes this to its logical conclusion, with him wearing a modified priest's robe that is designed to resemble Kazuya's outfit that is completely black. That same game has him go fully in the other direction, becoming Angel Jin to fight True Devil Kazuya.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Devil Jin wears a red shoe on his right foot and a black shoe on his left foot.
  • Good Eyes, Evil Eyes: As Devil Jin, his eyes are blank and with white-gold irises. He also sprouts a third eye on his forehead that can fire lasers.
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings:
    • He sprouts feathery black wings. However, in his ending in 4, a single white feather is seen fluttering down amidst his black ones, symbolizing the good within him.
    • His wings are feathered, raven black, but in all games from 5 to 6, his 2P outfit colors them white, making them look pretty much like Angel's wings. 7 has the white wings as a unique custom item.
    • In 8, it starts as black wings, then becomes one white and one black wing after coming to terms with the power and learning to control it, then finally fully white wings as Angel Jin after a talk with Jun.
  • Heel–Face Turn: As an extension for Jin, Jin's change in perspective affects him as well. He's portrayed as a Superpowered Evil Side for most of the franchise, with every what-if scenario starring him presenting him as a pure villain, and in 8, it's revealed that the evil he seems to represent is a symptom of Jin's anger and hatred and continued rejection of the Devil Gene. When Jin lets go of his hatred and comes to terms with the fact that the Devil Gene is just an extension of himself, Devil Jin also gradually loses his psychotic traits.
  • Home Stage:
    • Cathedral/Winter Palace is his boss stage in 5. It’s a creepy church with blood-red/pure white lighting that adds to the fear factor of Devil Jin.
    • He shares Descent into Subconscious with regular Jin in 8.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: A few lines from Scenario Campaign make it clear he wants to eat human flesh.
Devil Jin: Now this is some tasty prey.
Alisa: The target is to be protected, not to be eaten.
Devil Jin: Tch, and he's right within my sight.
  • Jack of All Stats: Like his regular self, but with both some decent pressure and 50/50's from his father and grandfather. However, he lacks a solid crouch dash game, making his EWGF the least optimal of the Mishimas. Despite this one flaw, many pro players consider Devil Jin to be the optimal Mishima-style character, having almost all of the usual strengths you'd expect with few of the same weaknesses. His jab is better, his pokes are safer, and fewer risks are necessary to achieve the same good results as Kazuya or Heihachi.
  • Laughably Evil: Mostly no, but there is one interaction in Scenario Campaign that plays his evilness for humor.
Devil Jin: So you're the target bear.
Kuma: (That's right. Who are you?)
Devil Jin: So you do understand. Let's see if you know my favorite word: terror! Gwah hah hah!
Kuma: (You're not right in the head.)
  • Laughing Mad: One of his recurring win poses has him cackling psychotically to himself upon winning, breaking out into a nightmarish Slasher Smile when he's finished.
  • Light Is Good: Jin overcoming his past and wanting to protect partly purifies Devil Jin to manifest light in his attacks as well as gaining a single white wing.
  • Literal Split Personality: In 8 he manifests separately from Jin, even saving him from being killed by Kazuya during their battle.
  • Meteor Move: Since 6, a Devil Jin player can do SS+2~U (sidestep right punch, hold up as the opponent is launched). Devil Jin unleashes a massive uppercut on his opponent, launching him/her very high into the air, followed by a Flash Step upwards teleporting on top of him/her, then he slams the opponent hard into the ground and finishes the sequence with an airborne laser attack at the fallen foe.
  • Mind over Matter: In his first fight against Kazuya in 8, Jin is able to lift nearby objects with his aura and turn them into projectiles.
  • Multi-Slot Character: He's always considered a separate character from Jin, unlike Devil Kazuya who started as a separate entity (in 2 and Tag 1) before being folded into Kazuya's moveset as a transformation starting with Tag 2. However, while Tag 2 doesn't change this, Jin and Devil Jin have unique features when paired. Jin/Devil Jin stand alone during their Battle Intro and winning will always grant a special win pose where they transform into the opposite form of the winning character. They also have a "GREAT!" combo (a special tag team string that certain pairings are allowed to perform) and a special alternative tag (done by pressing u/b+TAG) where the characters will switch by transforming instead of tagging out.
  • The Nose Knows: Devil Jin repeatedly says he "smells prey" in Tekken 6's campaign dialogue.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: In 8, he points out that Jin's path of obsessive anger and hatred makes him no different to Kazuya, particularly as he ends up engulfing the world in World War III.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: In his Character Episode in 8, he burns a good part of the world with just his Devil Beam.
  • One-Winged Angel: A stronger demonic transformation for Jin. His 5 ending goes further with this as he gains Jinpachi's power, his body becomes covered with fur, his horns become longer, and his eyes glow white.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: When enhanced by Jinpachi's power, he's able to nuke off the entire stage he's in.
  • Power Echoes:
"I will teach you the meaning of fear!" note
  • Power Glows: In Devil Within, his body and eyes glow red.
  • Practically Joker: A variant. While he lacks the Monster Clown aspect, but he makes up with a very recognizable Evil Laugh. One of Devil Jin's victory animations has him laughing maniacally evocative of The Joker's. He is also an agent of death and destruction who indiscriminately relishes in the pain and misery of others.
  • Progressively Prettier: Devil Jin looks pretty nightmarish in his earlier appearances, but by Tekken 7, he looks more like his regular human self except with tattoos and horns. Inverted in 8, where Devil Jin's appearance and mannerisms are much more menacing than they have ever been in past games.
  • Promoted to Playable: Devil Jin debuted in Jin's Tekken 3 ending, but didn't become playable until Tekken 5.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Delivers a brutal one to Jin throughout Chapter 12, calling him out for his arrogance and walking on the path of anger and hatred, to the point of starting World War 3 in 6, making him no different from Kazuya, while being in denial of his self and sins.
"You must live with your sins. You will only find atonement through solitude."
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Jin's classic red and black palette is accentuated in his Devil form, making him look much darker and demonic in nature.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eye sclera is shown to have turned glowing red in 8.
  • Shadow Archetype: By 8, Devil Jin is revealed to be this. He's the physical manifestation of Jin's darker traits, complete with the aesthetics of Jin's fake "emperor" persona 6, representing if Jin embraces his darker traits rather than being in denial about it. Deconstructed as Devil Jin calls Jin out for this, rejecting the part of Jin that he doesn't like to the point of starting a war. Jin manages to overcome this and come to terms with his devil self and sins, however.
  • Slasher Smile: Flashes a vicious one in his reveal trailer for 8.
  • Superpowered Evil Side:
    • Unlike Kazuya, Jin has no control of himself while in Devil mode and acts like a crazed, psychotic beast in this state.
    • In Blood Vengeance his Devil Jin form is further expanded by giving Jin two transformations, the first being more monstrous, hulking and brutish in appearance, and with him out of his mind and acting like a rabid beast in this state before triggering a second transformation, which is much sleeker and more humanoid and with him being in full control of himself.
    • In 8, turns out Devil Jin can be turned into a superpowered good side when Jin lets go of his hatred and embraces his desire to save the world and his loved ones from Kazuya. His Character Episode still had him fit this trope due to Jin giving in to vengeance after Lars, Alisa, and Lee's death however.
  • Too Many Belts: Devil Jin in 7 wears belts over almost his entire outfit. The Story mode explains that this was an attempt to restrain him while he was being transported out of the desert ruins of Azazel's temple. He escaped and found his way back to civilization with the belts still clinging to his body.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: In 8, Jin learns to come to terms with his past sins, as well as with his Devil Jin persona, giving himself a renewed sense of purpose, to live on in order to protect the world, his friends and beloved ones. This causes his Devil mode to lose his chaotic, Ax-Crazy tendencies, and for the first time he transforms into Devil Jin while still retaining control of himself, and Xiaoyu notices he's still Jin when she approaches him, while remarking she's not afraid of his Devil mode anymore.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Whenever he transforms into Devil Jin, he flies into a homicidal rage.
    • When he is seemingly killed by his grandfather Heihachi, Devil Jin awakens, angered by his grandfather's treachery, kills his gunmen, grabs Heihachi by his face, and throws him through a wall to the outside, then slams him into the floor several stories down. Being Made of Iron, however, Heihachi survives the ordeal.
    • While captured and held hostage by Heihachi and Kazuya, Jin beats them very easily to the point of almost brutally massacring the two. He only escaped his rage after seeing a vision of his mother, Jun, which convinced him to spare them both.
  • Up, Up and Away!: Devil Jin soars off into the night sky to vent his rage whenever he transforms in his endings.
  • What If?: Essentially what his story mode from 5 is, as it's presented like DJ completely took over, unlike canon where Jin only occasionally transforms into him, mostly unwillingly.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: He even goes Laughing Mad in one of his win poses.
  • You Don't Look Like You: In Blood Vengeance, Jin has two distinct Devil forms, but neither looks like the black-winged Fallen Angel form from the games. The first transformation is a hulking, inhuman beast. The second is more humanoid but has a pristinely regal design with navy-blue skin and large angelic wings, seemingly contrasting Devil Kazuya.

WARNING: UNMARKED SPOILERS FOR TEKKEN 8

Angel Jin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/angeljint8render.jpg
Red Dark Star
Appears in: 8

In 8, it is revealed that what truly fuels the Devil Gene is the user's desire. While Kazuya's desire was to destroy his father and dominate the world, Jin's desire is to protect those he cares for. Finally coming to terms with who he is as a person allows Jin to at last gain full control of Devil Jin, who becomes purified and gains a white angel wing. Jin then takes this even further by combining his Devil Gene with the Kazama clan's spiritual powers of purification, allowing him to achieve an entirely new form altogether: Angel Jin.

  • 11th-Hour Superpower: After accepting the Devil within him and embracing his Kazama heritage, Jin acquires this form by combining those powers to fight True Devil Kazuya at the end of 8's story mode, and eventually purged himself and his father of their Devil Genes.
  • Bishōnen Line: Heroic version; Jin finally accepting his responsibility causes Devil Jin to develop some angelic traits, and after full purification becomes the Light Is Good angel with devil horns Angel Jin, who is an SNK Boss.
  • Call-Back: To Angel from 2, who is a representation of all the good left in Kazuya's soul.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Angel Jin was foreshadowed as far back as Jin's ending in 4 where a single white feather appeared among the black.
    • Angel's Japanese profile from 2 and Tag 2 note her and Devil are two sides of the same coin, noting a connection between the Devil Gene and angelic powers.
    • In 5, Jin could be customized to look like an angel.
  • Gold-Colored Superiority: Is clad in golden armor, and is stronger than almost anybody in the series thus far.
  • Good Counterpart: Styled as such to True Devil Kazuya, being his opposite number in terms of sheer power.
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: Has white wings, in deliberate contrast to the more common black ones of Devils.
  • Instant Armor: Turning to this form transforms Jin into wearing a set of golden armor akin to a knight.
  • Our Angels Are Different: Angel Jin is a fully Ascended Demon form of Devil Jin, with white wings and golden armor. This form is fully under Jin's control, and has the added power of not only being as strong as True Devil Kazuya, but also of purifying, and thus seemingly erasing, itself and another Devil as strong as the one in Kazuya.
  • Purposefully Overpowered: You get to play Angel Jin yourself near the end of story mode, and if you're even modestly skilled at Tekken you'll be more than capable of mopping the floor with the comparably-but-not-quite-as-powerful True Devil Kazuya.
  • Redemption Promotion: Jin's willingness to take responsibility for his role in World War III and coming to terms with his Devil Gene is what led to him being able to partake this form in his final battle against Kazuya.
  • SNK Boss: He has several powerful unblockables, a teleport that heals him, and a command grab that restores about a quarter of his max health while dealing even more of the same to the enemy in damage. Notably, this is regardless of rather that health was normally recoverable grey health or not.
  • True Final Boss: If you manage to get 3 perfects in Arcade Battle, Angel Jin will replace Devil Kazuya as the regular final boss.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: Angel Jin is what happens when Jin combines the power of his Devil Gene with his mother's power of purification.

"No longer will I deny my past... No longer will I deny my comrades and our bonds... I will not deny my existence... I... I want to live!"
