Debut: Chapter 1 (Manga), Episode 1 (Anime)

Magic Attribute: Wind + Star

"I'm not stopping. I'm not moving. I'm not giving up!!"

Yuno is Asta's childhood friend and main rival, hailing from the same village of Hage. Although he can be condescending, he is nevertheless kindhearted and also seeks to become the Wizard King. Unlike Asta, Yuno is immensely talented, despite the fact that he is also a country bumpkin. His talent is so great that many believe that he has the best shot out of all the rookies to reach that lofty position.

Yuno has been blessed with a four-leaf clover grimoire, a sign of his unnaturally large reserves of mana, his natural talent for magic, and (supposedly) endowing him with good luck. As a Wind Magic practitioner, Yuno favors ranged combat, buffeting his opponents with magical gusts and blades made of wind. The fateful discovery of an ancient scroll allowed him to free Sylph, the fae-like spirit of wind, and gain her good graces.

  • Ability Mixing: Yuno's spell Spirit Assimilation: Spirit Dive is this. It involves the combination of Mana Zone, in assimilating Sylph, and Mana Skin, releasing his magic at a perfectly constant rate to wear a protective layer of mana. By refining them, he's able to hold Sylph's power in his body, vastly increasing his magic power.
  • The Ace: Yuno is good looking, admired by pretty much everyone, born with immense amounts of magical potential, and joins the most prestigious squad of Magic Knights without even trying. He's even the top Magic Knight rookie for acquiring the most stars not only out of every new Magic Knight but his entire squad.
  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • The anime gives him more screentime and character moments than the manga. This is justified, since the anime's slower pace makes his absences more pronounced than the manga.
    • Episode 160 shows more of his time as a baby in the Spade Kingdom before the Dark Triad killed his parents and Yuno was left at the church by Ralph's father.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Despite knowing it's insolent of him to ask, Yuno begs Nacht to let him join the elite force built around Asta that will assault the Spade Kingdom to save Vangeance. Nacht is impressed by Yuno's resolve and power, and lets him join.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Even though Yuno's been bestowed with the coveted four-leaf clover grimoire, he still receives little to no respect from the other knights in the Golden Dawn because of his peasant background. Since the only person's opinion who he truly cares about is Asta's, he doesn't particularly care what they think. After the six month timeskip it's no longer the case, with his squadmates respecting him for being a brilliant Magic Knight.
  • Animal Motifs: He can create a hawk from his Wind Magic to attack or carry him around. He has a cool, dignified demeanor and is somewhat proud that he has powerful magic.
  • Anti-Hero: Subverted. Yuno's first appearance paints him as your typical morally grey Jerkass Stock Shōnen Rival. However, not only does he care deeply for Asta but he has firmly been established as an unambiguously heroic character.
  • Aside Glance: Does this in the anime several times, most of which involve Klaus asking if Yuno takes him for a fool or something else along the lines.
  • Aura Vision: When his vision is taken by Catherine's Ash Curse Magic, he hones his magic sensing, allowing Yuno to see mana in the form of a flock of winged beings.
  • Badass Boast: He makes one after snapping out of his possession when Asta proclaims that he'll be the Wizard King, saving him and Mimosa from two elves' attacks in the process.
"What are you talking about Asta? I'm the one who's going to be the Wizard King."
  • Badass Cape: His complete Spirit Dive forms a regal-looking cape.
  • Balance, Speed, Strength Trio: Yuno is the Speed to Noelle's Balance and Asta's Strength with Wind Magic that lets him move fast with quick spells.
  • Bash Brothers: Him and Asta, who are childhood friends and rivals, are this whenever they fight together. Best showcased when they face off against Mars, Licht, and Zagred.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: He's considered by many people to be very handsome, and is firmly on the side of good.
  • Beneath the Mask: Intentionally became a calmer, more composed person with quite a bit of pride in his magical gifts since his promise with Asta to grow out of his crybaby self as a child who constantly relied on his childhood friend. It's later shown that Yuno carried a lot of burden of expectations for his talents by the people who acknowledged him and deemed him a genius, as well as those who envied and hated him for it because of his peasant status. Being left at the brink of defeat by Zenon and the possibility of not avenging his comrades causes Yuno to cry for the first time since the promise and question his worth up to then.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Yuno is generally cool and taciturn, speaking little. In spite of this, he's a powerful wind mage who can effortlessly defeat most mages.
  • BFS: Yuno's Spirit of Zephyr spell forms a two-handed longsword that's almost as tall as he is to wield.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Despite being rivals and the same age, Yuno is Asta's more mature foster brother and gets angry when people insult and disrespect him. This is best seen when he calmly yet angrily stops Sekke from harming Asta after the Magic Knights Entrance Exam. This also extends to his younger foster siblings as well, fighting alongside Asta to save them from an elf.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • He saves Asta and Mimosa just as they're about to be attacked by the elves possessing Klaus and Hamon.
    • Alongside Asta, they save their foster family from a reincarnated elf.
  • Big Ego, Hidden Depths: Yuno's calm, confident demeanor is revealed to have been to distance himself from his crybaby self in childhood who relied on Asta for help and assurance. As a result, he began honing his magic and tried to become more composed. Later on, it's shown that Yuno isn't cold so much as he is quiet and socially awkward around anyone who isn't Asta.
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: Yuno and Asta are this to each other, respectively, although they were the same height when they were younger, and Yuno is much more intelligent than Asta.
  • Bishie Sparkle: He sometimes has these from the perspective of Charmy, who's completely smitten with Yuno.
  • Blatant Lies:
    • When Asta saves him from Mars's giant crystal sword that would have killed him, Yuno tells him that he almost had him, annoying Asta. He then argues with Yuno, calling him out for his complete lie.
    • He says that he's completely fine as Leopold heats up the hot springs with his magic, with Yuno profusely sweating. Asta points it out, stating that Yuno just hates losing.
    • When Noelle asks him why he has elf ears and a facial marking, Yuno tells her that he's just brimming with power, with Noelle silent until he actually tells her why.
  • Blood Knight: Downplayed. While fighting against Rill, it was said that he never imagined being so happy while going all out. And there's also his Sore Loser tendencies.
  • Blow You Away: He has a Wind Magic, often manifesting in the form of whirlwinds or blades. It's an extremely powerful magic, able to one-shot noble trainees who had trained every day to become Magic Knights. Unfortunately, it's of little use against someone who can protect himself with armor made of diamond until he gains Sylph.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Parodied in that Asta (the Boke) is the one technically in the right, while Yuno (the Straight Man) repeatedly denies the facts (Yuno was about to be killed by Mars and would have died if Asta hadn't jumped in).
Yuno: [straight-faced with a sigh] Why did you do that? I almost had him…
Asta: [worked up] Say what?! You liar! You're all beat up! You looked like you were gonna die!
Yuno: [unchanged expression] I was just about to unleash a furious counterattack.
Asta: [even more worked up] You're so completely lying! You always do that, you know!
  • Born Lucky: Yuno is a mage blessed with a four-leaf clover grimoire, which is said to have good luck. He was born with an incredible amount of magical power as well as talent for magic, learning advanced techniques not long after he joins the Golden Dawn. He luckily finds a scroll containing the power of Sylph, allowing him to finally defeat Mars. His team later goes on to place first in the Magic Knights Examination by the luck of Rill accidentally destroying his team's crystal. When the elves are reincarnated, the soul reincarnated into his body is an unborn's child, allowing him to regain control of his body. He's so used to things going right that he hates losing, and when he's easily defeated by Zenon and half his squad is killed, he blames it on himself and is emotionally devastated.
  • Born Winner: The quality of your magic along with your magical capacity is determined at birth. Yuno was not only born with incredible magic potential, but he also receives the legendary four-leaf clover grimoire, which the first Wizard King also wielded, as his own.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: He yells out Asta's "Not yet!" as he fights Licht alongside him, refusing to give up.
  • Brainy Brunette: Yuno has messy black hair and a great instinct for mana, allowing him to grasp techniques such as mana sensing and Mana Skin in short time. When fighting Zagred, he incorporates the dregs of mana from Lumiere and Licht to make his Spirit of Zephyr effective against the devil, which earns him praise from the two.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: He does this as the story goes on. For example, he refuses to peep on the women's bath because he isn't "that type of character".
  • Break the Haughty: Yuno is a prodigious mage who has great pride in his magical power, not caring about the opinion of others who disparage him for being a peasant and confident that his magic will let him become the Wizard King. Then, after the time skip, Zenon easily defeats Yuno and leaves him for dead, with Zenon and his Dark Disciples having killed half of Golden Dawn and captured Vangeance. He's devastated at his failure to save his comrades and is in an angered, depressed state at the captains' meeting. Getting knocked unconscious by Zenon and left at the verge of defeat leaves Yuno crying, questioning if this is all he's worth.
  • Broken Ace: He's handsome, a powerful mage at a young age, was bestowed a four-leaf clover grimoire, and becomes the vice captain of the highest-ranked Magic Knights squad. Then Zenon easily defeats and nearly kills him, half his squad is killed, and his captain is captured. He's angry at himself for not being strong enough and, at the captains' meeting, is enraged and devastated.
  • Broken Tears: Yuno cries for the first time in so long after he's left on the verge of defeat by Zenon, thinking that he's unable to avenge the Golden Dawn even after training hard and insisting that he join the Spade assault unit, wondering if it's the end and if he, who was praised as a genius, acknowledged and envied by others, was worth only this as he lays on the ground, struggling to get back up with Zenon about to kill Finral and Langris.
  • Brutal Honesty: Yuno doesn't mince his words towards anyone. Even to his childhood friend, Asta. Here's one gem from early on in Chapter 1:
Asta: [after getting insulted by the other orphanage children] Shut up, brats! And you! Yunoooo! Why are you getting in the way?!
Yuno: [to Asta] Why? Because you're noisy, short, restless, and immature. Basically, you have no qualities that would appeal to women.
  • The Cavalry: When the Black Bulls and other Magic Knights are on the ropes against the elves, Yuno brings all the Magic Knights who had been scattered throughout the kingdom, who he all gathered in a short amount of time, for some much needed help.
  • Celibate Hero: Flat-out not interested, period. Fanservicey sights have no effect on him, he is either oblivious or uncomfortable when flirted with, and doesn't care about peeping on women in the bath.
  • Character Catchphrase: "There's no way."note
  • Character Development:
    • He begins the story indifferent to his squadmates, not caring that they look down on him for being a peasant. Over time, he begins to care for Klaus and Mimosa, and after the six month Time Skip he considers his fellow Golden Dawn members as his comrades and also becomes more expressive.
    • Yuno is a proud, gifted mage who doesn't like asking others for help. After his loss against Zenon and the massacre of half his squad, Yuno has become less prideful to get revenge against the Dark Triad member, begging Nacht to let him join the elite force that will assault the Spade Kingdom and pleading with Langris to train him.
  • Chaste Hero: Yuno genuinely has no interest in anyone and dedicates himself solely to his training. He ignores Sylph's affections, doesn't seem to notice or care that Charmy is infatuated with him, and is indifferent to his fangirls.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • His pendant. It's part of a group of stones that can power up elves and, apparently, open magic seals. It is used specifically to open the seal of Zagred.
    • Yuno's pendant is later revealed to be an heirloom of his biological family the House of Grinberryall, the former rulers of the Spade Kingdom.
  • Chick Magnet: Charmy falls for him after he saves her food, and Sylph becomes smitten with him. Girls at the Star Festival also swoon over him when goes onto the stage, and after the time skip, he has tons of fan clubs in the kingdom.
  • Childhood Friend: Of Asta. He hates it when people try to sabotage or discourage Asta's efforts and foils those plots in return. He also has complete faith in Asta's ability to become Wizard King:
Yuno: [in response to an insult to Asta] Asta is no loser. Asta is my rival.
  • Child of Two Worlds: Grew up as an orphan peasant in the Clover Kingdom, but was born the son of the House of Grinberryall, the Spade Kingdom's royal family and the country's crown prince. After learning this, Yuno still proclaims himself to be "Yuno of the Clover Kingdom" — this is Justified since he's too young to remember the Dark Triad massacre. Taken further with The Reveal that Yuno's wind magic is actually Licht and Tetia's son's, whose soul tells him that he has his own strength. After learning this, Yuno receives his Spade grimoire and gains his true magic unique to the royal family — star magic — with the chapter ending with its title — Yuno Grinberryall.
  • Child Prodigy: Yuno was capable of using strong Wind Magic at a young age, with many noticing his potential since then.
  • Combat Clairvoyance: While in Spirit Dive and using Mana Zone, he can predict and avoid attacks, even ones as fast as Light Magic.
  • Combo Platter Powers: Gains Star Magic on top of his Wind Magic after obtaining his true Spade grimoire and learning that his Wind Magic was actually Licht and Tetia's son's, who's been in Yuno all this time. Yuno notes to Bell that they can't defeat Zenon with his Star Magic alone, telling her to charge up power inside him, and using both his magics against him.
  • The Comically Serious: With the exception of conversations with Asta, everything about Yuno is deadpan. Everything. Even Sylph tugging on his cheeks. The effect is frequently hilarious.
  • Conveniently an Orphan: Yuno's one of the main characters and, along with Asta, he was left at the church as a baby.
  • Cool Big Bro: Yuno shows a much softer side around his younger foster siblings. This even applies to him and Asta, as Yuno is the more mature one. He encourages Asta to become stronger, looks out for his well-being, and defends him against others' insulting remarks.
  • Cool Crown: He gains a half crown of crosses made of green mana on the left side of his head when using Spirit Dive.
  • Cool Kid-and-Loser Friendship: The talented, handsome, popular Cool Kid to Asta's hot-headed, unskilled Loser. After Asta gets his grimoire, it's actually the other way around, but Asta is the only one oblivious to being more popular in the Magic Knights.
  • Cool Sword: His spell Spirit of Zephyr forms a green longsword with a hilt that juts out crosses and wings.
  • Cosmic Motifs: Stars. He is a member of the Golden Dawn whose symbol is the sun (a star), is associated with one half of a bright star on the Chapter 326 color spread (the other half associated with Asta), has star symbols on his magic stone necklace, is revealed to actually have star magic as his true magic, and when saving Asta from Lucifero the editor's note calls him the "star of hope".
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: Yuno has these after he's angry and emotionally devastated by Zenon and his Dark Disciples' attack on Golden Dawn.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Usually the one who delivers them. The reader knows that things are serious when he's on the receiving end such as in his battle with Mars. At least until he manages to accidentally summon Sylph who curb-stomps Mars back.
    • Him and Asta are subjected to one by the real Licht. Although they enter their Black form and Spirit Dive, Licht easily overwhelms and defeats them.
    • He's on the receiving end during his fight with Zenon, who mocks him for being defeated at only 55% of his devil's power.

    D — L
  • A Day in the Limelight: He is the protagonist of the third light novel of the series. The novel has him investigate a matchmaking party, take care of a dangerous pet in a mission, and find the "Original Sin" grimoire.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Yuno's usually brutally snarky to others' insult. In the very first chapter, he bluntly points out to Asta that he's unappealing to women. When he's in a team with Noelle at the Royal Knights Exam and she's being snobby, he asks if she can even fight and tells her that Asta's rubbing off on her, to Noelle's flustered denial.
  • Death Glare:
    • He gives one to Zenon after he impales Klaus and Letoile during his attack on the Golden Dawn.
    • Yuno is already visibly depressed at the captains' meeting after he was unable to stop Zenon and his Dark Disciples from capturing Vangeance and killing half of the Golden Dawn. He then furiously glares at Jack after he suggests that Yuno is overestimating Zenon because he was nearly killed by him.
    • He does this again at Nacht when he brings up that Ralph came to the Clover Kingdom a few days ago and asks Yuno if he's protecting him and what his true identity is.
  • Defrosting Ice King: Although he was never mean to them, Yuno is indifferent to everyone in his squad at first, not caring that they shun him for being a peasant and focused mostly on his rivalry with Asta. After the Dungeon Exploration Arc, he befriends Klaus and Mimosa, and eventually as his squad's opinion of him changes he's on better terms with them after the six month time skip, even calling them his comrades.
  • Demoted to Extra: While hardly an extra, his role becomes much less prominent shortly after the beginning arcs. Yuno has a habit of vanishing from the story for extended periods of time because of his membership in the Golden Dawn. He's promoted back to being a main character following the Forest of Witches Arc, with him regaining focus and taking part in many important battles.
  • Determinator: It's only natural that he's this after growing up with Asta. He refuses to give up against Mars even though his magic is unable to do anything against his diamond creations. And like his rival, he trains very hard to become stronger and achieve his goal of being the Wizard King. He nearly despairs after easily getting knocked out by Zenon during their rematch and questioning his worth as he contemplates on his life up to then, crying for the first time since his promise. But remembering his vow with Asta and the realization that he's worth more than that motivates Yuno to struggle to get back up, yelling and coughing out blood.
"I made... a vow with him... And this is not... all I am!!"
  • Deuteragonist: Zig-Zagged. Yuno is the foil and rival to Asta but his role in the story is less significant after the beginning arcs due to being a member of the Golden Dawn. However, he begins to regain screentime and importance during the Royal Knights Arc.
  • Domain Holder: Yuno becomes able to use Mana Zone, controlling the mana in the area around him. He uses it to generate a spell inside another spell, increase his spells' power and range, and attack enemies from behind.
  • Doorstop Baby: He and Asta were abandoned at the Church's doorstep on the same day.
  • Duality Motif: When using Spirit Dive, Yuno covers the left side of his body in green mana, gaining a left half-crown, bracelet, and fairy-like wing. This mirrors Asta's Black form, which covers the right side of his body in anti-magic. When fighting Zenon, after having Bell save up mana for their rematch, he shows a more complete form.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Yuno has these after Zenon and his Dark Disciples attack Golden Dawn, leaving half his squad dead, with Zenon easily defeating Yuno and capturing Vangeance.
  • Elemental Eye Colors: His golden eyes fit a lot more when it's revealed that his real magic attribute is star, not wind which would better fit green.
  • Elemental Motifs:
    • Wind, befitting someone with Wind Magic. He typically uses it for tightly controlled tornadoes, reflecting how despite his relentless attacks, Yuno himself is the eye of the storm, remaining composed even in the midst of combat.
    • Light, being a member of the Golden Dawn (whose symbol is a sun) and being a compassionate young man underneath his stoic exterior. Becomes more prominent in the Spade Kingdom Raid arc when he gains his grimoire as the prince of the Spade Kingdom, Star Magic, granting him light speed and reinforcing his status as a Hope Bringer to his birth country and adopted one.
  • Elemental Speed: Wind is a magic attribute focused on speed, and Yuno uses his magic to cast fast spells and fly through the air at great speeds.
  • Elemental Weapon: He's fond of making these as projectiles with his Wind Magic, able to form a bow and arrows, countless blades, and a spear out of wind. His Spirit of Zephyr spell creates a large sword out of wind mana for him to wield while in Spirit Dive that he can unleash gales of wind from. Spirit of Boreas forms a powerful halberd that unleashes powerful wind gales. Spirit of Euros creates a wind bow and arrow that pierces through Zenon's absolute armor instantaneously, though it ends up being for nought.
  • Embodiment of Virtue: Of the three main characters, Yuno embodies "faith" of the three values represented by the clover of the kingdom. Although a gifted prodigy blessed with incredible magical potential, since a child he has always had the utmost faith in Asta for his determination despite him being a magic-less dunce. Yuno's faith in Asta and acknowledgement of him as his rival prevents him from falling into despair in the first chapter, and their respective trust in one another motivates each other throughout their rivalry. After proving himself as a Magic Knight despite his peasant status, the Golden Dawn members come to see him as an admirable Vice Captain. So much so that Langris, who had hated Yuno at first for their similarities, acknowledges him and the two have confidence in one another as they fight together against Zenon.
  • Emerald Power: His wind magic manifests with a green colour, as does his grimoire, and his magic is very clearly above most of his colleagues.
  • Ensign Newbie: At the beginning of the story, Yuno is one of the newest recruits of Golden Dawn. He soon becomes one of the squad's strongest members, eventually becoming Vice Captain after the six month time skip.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: Yuno has these after being nearly killed by Zenon, who captures Vangeance, and half his squad is killed.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: In Episode 160, a man is seen as a member of one of Yuno's fan clubs.
  • Eye Colour Change: Using Spirit Dive turns Yuno's left eye green (both eyes in the complete form), to go with the rest of the transformed left side of his body.
  • Fan of Underdog: He'd never admit it out loud, but he does look up to Asta for constantly protecting him when they were little and trying his hardest despite his lack of magic and feels like he needs to repay him. He defends his friend against Klaus, telling him not to underestimate Asta.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Klaus initially disliked Yuno for being a peasant, with Yuno indifferent to both him and Mimosa. After the Dungeon Exploration Arc, in which they fight against Mars with the Black Bulls, the three are much more friendly with each other and seen together often. He helps Klaus against Foyal and is enraged at the sight of Klaus being impaled by Zenon.
  • Flash Step: Combining his Spirit Dive with Mana Zone, he can avoid attacks fast enough to make it look like this, with the appearance of him dancing along a stream of wind.
  • Foil:
    • To Asta in almost every possible way. Yuno is talented, while Asta is the dunce without a shred of magical potential. Yuno is admired by all, while Asta is the laughingstock. Yuno is calm and level headed, while Asta is hyperactive and rarely thinks before he speaks. They're best friends.
    • To Noelle. Both have immense magic power, have an outwardly frosty yet ultimately friendly relationship with Asta, and wield a classical elemental magic eventually gaining a Super Mode from the corresponding Spirit Dance. However Yuno was raised in an Orphanage of Love, has always had excellent control over his magic (making him popular amongst his Family of Choice) and has a profound sense of friendship and respect for his Childhood Friend that he doesn't hesitate to express. By contrast, Noelle was raised by her abusive family, constantly bullied her for struggling to control her immense magic power, and quickly develops romantic feelings for Asta that she refuses to acknowledge, even to herself. In another contrast, Noelle was all but disowned by her family when assigned to the Black Bulls while Yuno learns the Spade Kingdom has long been awaiting the return of him as their prince.
    • To Lucius Zogratis. Both were born as singularities. Yuno hosts another soul in his body, the unborn son of the elf tribe chief Licht who sees himself as Yuno, and as a result has two grimoires. Lucius was born the greatest devil host in the history of the Zogratis Family with two souls in one body — Lucius and Julius who oppose each other. Yuno is the rightful heir to the Spade Kingdom as the prince of the House of Grinberryall. Lucius is the eldest sibling of the Dark Triad who overthrew the Grinberryall family to become Spade's rulers. Yuno as the host of Sylph is a Saint Stage able to purify devil power and destroy devils. Lucius developed his Soul Magic to purify devil power into sacred power that he can grant to humans. Yuno is Asta's closest friend and rival. Lucius sees Asta as the world's flaw that he must eliminate for his ideal world. With Asta gone Yuno vows to surpass him and defeat Lucius in his stead, while Lucius intends on crushing Yuno after seemingly eliminating Asta.
  • Force and Finesse: Asta, a magic-less, muscled fighter who wields large anti-magic swords to cut through magic, is the Force to Yuno's Finesse, a gifted mage who uses his finely trained magic to condense wind into weapons that he can fire with great precision.
  • Freudian Trio: Yuno is the Superego to Asta's Id and Noelle's Ego, acting cool, calm, and quiet most of the time.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Seems to be the opposite at first given Yuno's somewhat condescending nature, but it's quickly made clear that it's this by the end of the first chapter. Despite their opposite personalities and innate talent, Yuno respects Asta greatly for his determination and has seen him as his savior since they were kids. Through their rivalry, the two push each other to become stronger. So much so that when asked if he'll rule the Spade Kingdom after the Dark Triad and Lucifero are defeated, Yuno states that he needs to uphold his vow with Asta, his good friend and rival.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: The other knights in the Golden Dawn have expressed dismay that he's a peasant, since the entire rest of the squad is comprised of nobility. This is no longer the case after the six month time skip, with Yuno becoming Vice Captain and gaining his squad's respect.
  • Fusion Dance: He becomes able to fuse with Sylph to enter his Spirit Dive form, giving him a dramatic increase in magic power and a fairy-like appearance.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Like Asta, Yuno is a female name, specifically based on Juno, the spiteful and jealous wife of Jupiter in Roman Mythology.
  • Genre Savvy: In chapter 108, he acknowledges that he isn't supposed to be the type of character to get swept up in funny shenanigans, unluckily for him, it's a breather arc, meaning he actually is in this instance.
  • The Gift: Yuno has had incredible magical potential since he was young. When the time came to receive a grimoire, he is chosen by a four-leaf clover grimoire, the highest level grimoire of them all.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Despite his quiet demeanor, Yuno is still a powerful Magic Knight and very much willing to use lethal attacks, piercing Lagus through with a giant wind trident and slicing through Gaderois' body. He becomes vengeful against Zenon after his massacre of the Golden Dawn, telling him that he'll die regretting having touched the squad after blowing a hole in his chest.
  • Gratuitous Latin: His Star Magic spells have Latin words such as "Hasta", "Scutum", and "Flagellum", meaning "spear", "shield", and "whip" respectively.
  • Grew a Spine: As a child, Yuno was a timid crybaby who couldn't stand up for himself. After a thug tried to take his necklace and Asta stopped him, Yuno became inspired by Asta's courage and determination. Since that day, Yuno has shared Asta's dream of becoming the Wizard King, training his magic, and not cried since then, becoming much more calm and stoic while having a strong desire to protect those he cares for.
  • Hair-Contrast Duo: The quiet, composed Yuno has messy black hair while the loud, excitable Asta, his best friend and rival, has spiky ash blonde hair.
  • Has a Type: According to the Volume 31 Questions Brigade, he likes someone he feels comfortable with.
  • Heritage Disconnect: Even after seeing the memories of himself in infancy before he was left at the church and finding out that he's the prince of the Spade Kingdom, he still states that he's "Yuno of the Clover Kingdom".
  • Heroic Second Wind: As he lays on the ground, struggling to get back up after being left unconscious by a now devil Zenon, a crying Yuno questions his worth as he thinks of how he's unable to avenge half the Golden Dawn despite his efforts and about to be defeated. His reaffirmation that this isn't all he is has the soul of Licht's son within him agree and tell him about his own strength, letting Yuno gain his true spade grimoire and get back up to fight against Zenon now with two grimoire open, proclaiming that he'll save his captain and the others, become the Wizard King, and defeat him.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Yuno questions his self-worth after being knocked unconscious by Zenon during their rematch, wondering if he, a genius and Hero To His Hometown who was acknowledged, envied, and hated, made the right choice after he insisted on coming to avenge his squad and training hard, so much so that he starts crying for the first time in a decade as he wonders if this is the end and Zenon is about to kill Langris and Finral. Later becomes Subverted when Yuno, remembering his vow with Asta, asserts that this is not all he is. The soul of Licht's son within concurs with Yuno, acknowledging that he has his own strength as well, letting Yuno obtain his true spade grimoire.
  • Heroic Willpower: Although it helps that the elf soul in his body is an unborn child's, Yuno's strong willpower is what stops him from being taken over, breaking free when Asta states that he'll become the Wizard King.
  • Hero of Another Story: Because we only see him when he crosses paths with Asta, a lot of his accomplishments happen offscreen, such as being named rookie of the year at the Star Festival for his contributions to Golden Dawn's ranking.
  • A Hero to His Hometown: As a prodigy with his magic, Yuno was called a genius and the hope of Hage village growing up.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • In spite of his reserved personality, Yuno is a huge Sore Loser and gets very frustrated when losing a battle or even a competition, childishly cheating in standing Leopold's heat at the hot springs by using his magic to cool himself off. He also takes his rivalry with Asta even more seriously than him at times.
    • Yuno has also shown a cheeky side to his stoic personality, which especially shows around Asta and Klaus. He points out to Noelle that Asta is rubbing off on here after her lame comeback to him pointing out her bad magic control. And when Zenon tells him that he'll die without making him take a single step, Yuno repeats his words back to him after blowing a hole in his chest with his Spirit of Boreas.
  • Holy Halo: Attaining Saint Stage with his resonance with Bell increasing to near 100% through fighting in the brink of death gives Yuno the power to destroy a devil and creates a halo around his now Saint Spirit of Zephyr, using it to slice through a devil Zenon's heart.
  • Howl of Sorrow: He screams in the aftermath of Zenon's attack on Golden Dawn that leaves half the squad dead, chastising himself for being too weak and wondering if he was stronger.
  • I Owe You My Life: Several times to Asta:
    • When they were little, Asta fought off a thug who wanted to steal Yuno's necklace. This event led Yuno to feel indebted to Asta and vow to become more courageous.
    • After Asta manifests his five-leaf grimoire, he saves Yuno from Revchi, with Yuno promising to repay him someday.
    • In the dungeon, Yuno saves Asta saves from a magic trap, telling him that he repaid the favor. Soon after, Asta saves Yuno from Mars's giant mineral sword, with Yuno slightly irritated that he owes Asta his life again.
  • Ignore the Fanservice: More often in the anime:
    • Yuno gets visibly uncomfortable when Asta points out Noelle's Clothing Damage after the fight with Mars.
    • He doesn't react to a naked Noelle when they run into her and Vanessa at a swimwear shop, in contrast to Klaus who gets a large nosebleed.
    • When asked by Yami if he wants to peep on the girls at the hot springs, Yuno casually refuses to Yami's irritation.
  • Immune to Mind Control: Played With. Yuno is initially taken over by an elf but snaps out of it when Asta states that he'll become the Wizard King. You can't easily be possessed by a baby that never developed his own thoughts and feelings, even if the elves were sure that Licht's kid could control him.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice:
    • He's impaled by Zenon's bone sword and left to bleed out. Thankfully, he's saved by Vangeance's Budding of Yggdrasil spell which heals him.
    • Yuno gets stabbed throughout by Zenon using his bones through spatial portals. He uses his Conjunction to free himself from it to slice Zenon's heart from behind.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: His name can be spelled as "Juno", which is the Roman goddess's name that "Yuno" is derived from.
  • Instant Expert:
    • Averted. Despite his talent, he's seen working extremely hard in flashbacks to try and match the expectations placed upon him. He also has problems controlling Sylph's power until he proves his worth to her.
    • Played straight with Mana Skin. Yuno grasps it in short time and combines it with his magic to easily fly up to the hot spring. Not long after he's mastered it to the point he can use Spirit Dive.
    • Zig-Zagged when obtaining his Star Magic. Yuno is able to teleport between stars, form barriers, and converge the starlight into a beam right after gaining his grimoire. However, he has difficulty aiming at Zenon's heart using his magic, missing twice, and is still using his Wind Magic, noting that he can't beat him with Star Magic alone.
  • Ironic Name: Yuno is named after the goddess Juno, the wife of Jupiter in Roman Mythology infamous for her jealousy over her husband's many affairs. Instead, Yuno is anything but jealous of his rival Asta, encouraging him to become stronger with the two maintaining a close bond.
  • It's All About Me: Downplayed. Yuno is a cold young man who doesn't care about others' opinions of him, only concerned about Asta's, and is unbothered by his squad's contempt for him because he's a peasant. He nonchalantly disregards Alecdora's anger at him for not bothering to use his Spirit Magic against him in the Royal Knights Exam as well as his proclamation that he'll make Vangeance's dream come true:
Yuno: I don't know anything about other people's dreams. The only dreams I see are my own.
  • It's Personal: Yuno has a personal grudge to settle with Zenon after he nearly kills him, kills half his squad, and abducts Vangeance. So much so that Yuno begs Nacht to let him be part of the elite force that will attack the Spade Kingdom to stop the Dark Triad, with it revealed that Sylph has been storing mana to take him down. Nacht is impressed by Yuno's resolve and lets him join.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Downplayed. Yuno isn't exactly a jerk, but he can be somewhat cold and condescending, talking down on Asta and making sarcastic remarks at times. Still, he's really a good person at heart, and despite this, he deeply cares about his childhood friend, praising him to others, and he's a selfless and unambiguously heroic individual who takes his Magic Knight duty seriously, courageously fighting enemies to save innocent civilians in the Clover Kingdom.
  • Kid Hero: He's a main character and one of the youngest members of his squad due to recently receiving a grimoire at the age of 15 in the beginning of the story. And as a Magic Knight, he has the duty of protecting the Clover Kingdom.
  • The Lancer: To Asta, his best friend with whom they fight many enemies together. While Asta is hot-blooded, outspoken, has no magic, and uses anti-magic swords to fight, Yuno is calm, quiet, was born with incredibly strong magic, and fights with ranged Wind Magic. Even their transformations contrast each other — Yuno's Spirit Dive transforms the left side of his body in relation to the transformed right side of Asta's Black form.
  • Land, Sea, Sky: Yuno is the Sky to Asta's Land and Noelle's Sea, using Wind Magic empowered by the wind spirit Sylph.
  • Last of His Kind: Yuno is the last living member of the House of Grinberryall, the royal family of the Spade Kingdom, after the Dark Triad killed his parents. Subverted when it turns out Ciel, his mother, is revealed to still be alive.
  • Leitmotif:
  • Light/Darkness Juxtaposition:
    • With Asta, despite neither having powers directly relating to the above. Asta is a member of the Black Bulls (with the appropriately coloured uniform]], has a black grimoire and wields demonic looking Anti-Magic in contrast to Yuno's white Golden Dawn uniform, bright grimoire and his more ethereal Wind Magic, especially once he gets Sylph. The contrast becomes greater with their respective Super Modes, as well as Yuno Gaining Star Magic at the climax of the Spade Kingdom arc.
    • His opponent for the Spade Kingdom Raid Arc is the Devil Host Zenon. This is made all the more prominent when the latter becomes a full devil while Yuno gains access to his Spade Grimoire, and with it Star Magic.
  • Light 'em Up: His true magic, Star Magic, from his Spade Kingdom heritage, which manifests as light whips, barriers and blasts.
  • Light Is Good: Some time after joining Golden Dawn, Yuno begins wearing the squad's uniform, which is mostly white with gold accents. His Spirit Dive form also covers him in light green mana that forms a half-crown and bracelet of crosses along with a fairy-like wing. He's a courageous Magic Knight who's protective of those he cares for. Even moreso after it's revealed that his true magic is his Star Magic, letting Yuno unleash beams of starlight using glowing star bodies.
  • Lightning Bruiser: A magical one. Thanks to his magic, Yuno can move very fast and hit very hard with powerful gusts and wind blades. Even moreso while in Spirit Dive, giving Yuno a boost in Magic power which lets him briefly keep up with Licht.
  • Like Father, Like Son: According to Ralph, Yuno has his father Loyce's strong heart.
  • Loner-Turned-Friend: While his squad outright detests him at first for being a peasant, Yuno himself doesn't care about their opinion of him and dedicates himself to attaining the merit needed to become the Wizard King. After their mission to the dungeon, he befriends Mimosa and Klaus, and eventually comes to consider the rest of the Golden Dawn his comrades when they respect Yuno more for his abilities, with the squad growing closer with him. It's all the more tragic when half the squad is killed by Zenon and his Dark Disciples, with Yuno heartbroken and angry at himself.
  • Looks Like Cesare: After half the Golden Dawn is killed and he's defeated by Zenon, he has Creepy Shadowed Undereyes combined with his pale skin and messy black hair.
  • Lost Orphaned Royalty: In Chapter 233, it's revealed that he's a member of the Spade Kingdom's royal family. Yuno himself is shocked by the reveal and doesn't want to accept it, declaring himself Yuno of the Clover Kingdom.

    M — R
  • Mage Marksman: He can use his Wind Magic to cast the spell Swift White Bow, forming a large wind bow and six arrows to fire at enemies. The arrows can even block enemy attacks and then split apart to continue targeting the foe. His Spirit of Euros spell forms a bow and arrow.
  • Magical Gesture: With his Star Magic: Conjunction, pointing his middle and finger out towards one of his stars to teleport between them, letting him escape from Zenon's subspace during their rematch.
  • Magic Knight: Yuno becomes this while using Spirit Dive, using his spell Spirit of Zephyr to form a two-handed sword out of wind.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • His family surname, Grinberryall, is a play on the saying "grin and bear it all" which means to suffer stoically — perfectly fitting with how Yuno became this way to shed his crybaby past and how he composedly puts up with the envy and hate of others for his giftedness despite being a peasant.
    • Yuno is derived from the name of the Roman goddess "Juno", which is an asteroid in the eastern end of the constellation Virgo. It's later revealed that Yuno's true magic is actually star magic.
  • Messy Hair: His black hair is pretty untidy, with strands jutting out in different directions. Flashbacks show that he's had it since he was young.
  • Mirror Character: Zenon and Yuno are both cold, speak little, and have confidence in their power, preferring to settle things fast with their magics. While Yuno is selfless and cares for his squad, Zenon is merciless and derides his Dark Disciples for being weak. He physically resembles Yuno and his backstory shows that he is a dark counterpart to him, beginning as a quiet young boy who befriended and became rivals with Allen, who is almost identical to Asta, in becoming commander in chief of the Mage Defense Force. In contrast to Yuno, who's always had the utmost faith in Asta, Zenon killed Allen by using him as a decoy to kill a devil. This led him to become The Social Darwinist, believing that the weak like Allen should be discarded, and a devil host to gain more power. Zenon even points out that if Yuno sacrificed Langris to pierce his heart, like how Zenon had sacrificed Allen, instead of diverting it slightly to avoid hitting him he would have won. Their battle becomes a clash of ideologies, each wanting to prove that the choices they made were right.
Yuno and Zenon: I'm the one who's right. I'm the one who will win!!
  • Mistaken for Gay: When asked by Yami why he won't peep on the girls, Asta states that he isn't interested because he's only bathed with guys, to Yuno's irritation.
"Hey, Asta. Quit saying things people are going to misinterpret."
  • Mr. Fanservice: Downplayed in comparison to Asta, but Yuno is considered handsome by many people and gets a Shirtless Scene in the anime.
  • Multi-Melee Master: Many of Yuno's spells forms weaponry out of his Wind Magic that he can launch at enemies. Combining it with his Spirit Magic forms his Spirit of Zephyr longsword to wield. He later gains Spirit of Boreas, a halberd, and Spirit of Euros, a bow and arrow to shoot. He can use his true magic, Star Magic, to form a whip out of starlight.
  • Mundane Utility: He can use his Wind Magic to cool himself, as seen in the hot springs when Leopold heats up the water to "melt the cool" off of him.
  • Mythical Motifs:
    • Sylphs, owing to his powerful wind magic and the appearance of his Spirit Drive. Bonus points for having an actual Wind Spirit named Sylph as a companion.
    • Later on, becomes associated with Angels as well, gaining wings and a halo in his Super Mode. Becomes even more prominent when he unlocks his Star Magic.
    • Elves, befitting his Pretty Boy appearance and immense mana, i.e., magical power. Not to mention the reveal that he is the reincarnation of Licht's unborn child, which is the true source of his Wind Magic.
  • Next Tier Power-Up: Yuno gains quite a few power-ups throughout the story that parallel Asta's:
    • In the Dungeon he finds a scroll that gives him the power of Sylph, with her power boosting his Wind Magic by using Spirit Magic.
    • After training his Mana Skin and magic sensing, he gains the power to enter Spirit Dive by the time of the Royal Knights Examination, merging with Sylph to enter a form that greatly enhances his magical power.
    • While fighting Zagred with Asta, he shows off the new spell Spirit of Zephyr, forming a sword out of his Wind Magic that can incorporate surrounding dregs of mana that lets him harm the devil.
    • In his rematch against Zenon, Yuno shows off a more complete, powerful Spirit Dive after having had Bell save up her mana in preparation and training up to the raid. He later gains his true magic Star Magic and attains Saint Stage from increasing his resonance with Bell through fighting on the brink of death against Zenon.
  • No Last Name Given: This is justified again, as he was also left at the orphanage with clothing bearing only his first name and no knowledge of his family. Yuno doesn't know what his last name or family would be. In the one-shot, his last name was Crossley. Later on, it's revealed that his birth name is Yuno Grinberryall.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: After joining Golden Dawn, he wears the squad's mantle but eschews wearing its signature red and white uniform, representing his status as a peasant outcast among the otherwise noble and royal squad. Beginning with the Forest of Witches Arc, he wears the squad's uniform regularly.
  • No Social Skills: Although Yuno seems cold and aloof, he's actually just quiet and has problems communicating with most people except Asta, his best friend and foster brother who he grew up with. He doesn't care about befriending any of his squadmates at first and his Brutal Honesty causes him to provoke some people. He does improve over time, becoming closer to his fellow Golden Dawn members like Klaus and Mimosa.
  • Not Quite Flight:
    • He rides a tornado through the air with his Celestial Wind Ark spell.
    • He can use a combination of Mana Skin and his Wind Magic to glide through the air.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite his air of indifference and maturity, Yuno can be quite childish, sulking when he doesn't want to answer a question and being more passionate about their rivalry than Asta himself at times. When Asta tells him not to get overconfident, he unleashes a powerful wind spell that could have killed him and Noelle just so Asta could dispel it and receive Yuno's message:
    "Later Shortsta."
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Langris admits that he had hated Yuno because of their similarities in insolence and presumptuousness due to their skills. Not wanting to lose, he didn't want Yuno to surpass him. But after Character Development and recognizing Yuno's inspirational strength, he acknowledges him as Vice Captain of the Golden Dawn during their fight against Zenon.
  • Not So Stoic:
    • He can't do anything against Mars's Mineral Magic and is told by him to stop. He gets riled up and shouts that he's not giving up.
    • Yuno gets nervous when Mereoleona forcibly drags him to the Yultim Volcano for training. At the hot springs, he gets visibly angry when Asta tells Yami that he isn't interested in peeping on the girls because he's only bathed with guys.
    • He's unnerved when he encounters Licht, intimidated by the fantastic density of his mana, and later becomes overwhelmed by his power when he and Asta fight Licht.
    • When Zenon and his Dark Disciple attack the Golden Dawn, Yuno is enraged at Gaderois for killing his comrades. He becomes very nervous when he meets Zenon, remembering him his face from Ralph's memories which showed him overthrowing the Spade Kingdom. In the aftermath of the Golden Dawn's massacre, he screams in frustration.
    • After being knocked out by Zenon during their rematch, unable to get up and awakening to see Finral and Langris about to be killed, Yuno thinks about how half his comrades were killed, he had himself get put in the special Spade assault unit, and trained but still can't do anything and cries, wondering if it's the end. Notable as Yuno had never cried since the day he made The Promise with Asta to become the Wizard King as kids and took up a stoic demeanor to grow out from being a crybaby.
  • Number Two: After the six month time skip, Yuno's become the Vice Captain of Golden Dawn and is now respected by his squadmates.
  • Oblivious to Love: He doesn't seem to notice Charmy's blatant crush on him or probably doesn't care.
  • Odd Friendship: With Asta, who is the complete opposite of Yuno in terms of temperament and magical ability. They're best friends who grew up together in the same church and friendly rivals.
  • One-Man Army: After the Dark Triad’s defeat, he becomes this during the one year timeskip, being able to defeat an army of Devils in with seemingly little effort.
  • Only One Name: Due to being left at a church as an infant, Yuno has no surname, unlike most of the rest of the cast. It's later revealed that his family name is Grinberryall.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Was a timid crybaby as a kid who relied on Asta, and stopped crying and took up a more composed demeanor after he made the promise with Asta to become the Wizard King. After a decade, Yuno cries after getting knocked unconscious by Zenon despite his training and insistence to fight him again, remembering how Zenon killed half his squad and he's now about to kill Langris and Finral, wondering if it's the end and if this was all he was worth.
  • Orphan's Plot Trinket: He was left at the orphanage with his magic stone necklace. It's a sign that he is the son of the Grinberryall family, the previous royalty of the Spade Kingdom.
  • Out of Focus: Despite being one of the main characters, Yuno is noticeably absent in many of the early arcs due to being in a different squad from Asta. This is rectified following the Forest of Witches Arc, with Yuno taking part in many important battles and showcasing his new powers.
  • The Paragon: Langris internally admits Yuno to be this, using his strength selflessly in inspiring the other members of the Golden Dawn through his competitive nature, motivating them to become stronger. It's for this reason that Langris finally acknowledges Yuno as the Golden Dawn's vice captain.
Langris: But your strength was different. It was as if you were spurring us on with that wind. As if we were flying with you. Your strength wasn't self-centered. The way you hated losing inspired everyone, and made us stronger.
  • Parental Abandonment: He was left at the orphanage's doorstep. Yuno shares this aspect with Asta, who was left there along with him. They grew up together and became each others' rivals, and thus the two are like blood brothers in the absence of actual blood relatives/family. His family's servant left him there after the Dark Triad killed his parents.
  • Penny Among Diamonds: He joins the Golden Dawn, which is mostly comprised of nobles who look down on him due to his peasant background. He doesn't seem to mind their opinions much, and usually spends time with the kind Mimosa and Klaus, who warm up to him eventually. Then it's subverted when it's revealed that Yuno is of higher standing than any of them as the crown prince of the Spade Kingdom.
  • Perpetual Frowner: The pictures above don't lie - that icy glare is his normal expression. There's no actual malice behind it, though - he's just serious, composed, and more than a little socially awkward.
  • Personality Powers:
    • Although Yuno isn't free-spirited and energetic befitting his attribute, his Wind Magic does incorporate a lot of Razor Wind, and he can be very cutting with his honest, snarky remarks. Langris compares Yuno to a spurring wind, flying with the other Golden Dawn through inspiring others with his competitive spirit and strength.
    • His actual, original, magic being Star magic also fits him a lot more, since stars are objects that can provide a guiding light in the darkness, much like Yuno himself gradually starts adopting traits of The Leader as he progresses through the series, inspiring his fellow Golden Dawn members with his hard-working example, as well as fitting his seemingly-distant personality and general stoicism. Stars also shine brightest when placed in the dark, fitting Yuno as somebody who improves rapidly through his rivalry with Asta, as well as having near-flawless teamwork with him despite the many differences between their characters.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: He becomes this after the defeat of the Dark Triad and Lucifero, as he was able to defeat high ranking devils without breaking a sweat.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: When he uses Spirit Dive, Yuno has part of his body covered in green mana, giving his black hair a green tint. After hosting the soul of Licht's child, using the form turns the left half of Yuno's hair a bright light green.
  • Power Floats: Yuno floats in the air after gaining his Spade grimoire and true star magic, with his stars surrounding him and Zenon realizing that he's the son of the royal family.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Gains a single greenish wing over his left arm upon absorbing the mana from his spirit Sylph. After having Bell save up her mana to prepare for his rematch against Zenon, Yuno manifests a more complete Spirit Dive with two wings.
  • Power Glows:
    • Spirit Dive gives Yuno a tremendous boost in magic power, and covers the left side of his body in glowing green mana.
    • He glows with light after gaining his true Star Magic and Spade grimoire.
  • Power Incontinence: He suffers from this after gaining Sylph. He can't summon her on command and the magic seems to have a mind of its own much to his frustration. It's resolved when he proves himself worthy by using mana sensing to defeat Catherine.
  • Power Misidentification: Chapter 308 reveals that Yuno's wind magic and four-leaf grimoire isn't actually his own but Licht and Tetia's son, whose soul has remained in Yuno. Learning that he has his own strength, he obtains his true spade grimoire within the Spade Castle and gains his true magic, star magic.
  • Power Stereotype Flip: Wind users are usually portrayed as cheerful and free-spirited. Instead, Yuno's very calm and serious, usually acting unflappable. This is made especially apparent with his interactions with Sylph, the energetic, playful wind spirit. Which makes sense when it's revealed that his true magic isn't actually wind magic, but star magic.
  • Pretty Boy: Yuno is a handsome young man who has slender facial features and a slim body, with many characters noting his good looks. Yami even calls him a "breezy little pretty boy".
  • The Pretty Guys Are Stronger: Yuno is widely acknowledged as good-looking In-Universe, and is an incredibly powerful, gifted mage. Stated as such when he easily destroys Alecdora's spell by activating his own spell inside his:
Finral: He can even do that? That's what separates us from hot guys, dang it!
  • Primary-Color Champion: Later on, Yuno begins wearing the standard Golden Dawn uniform, consisting of a red and white jacket trimmed with gold and blue and a blue cape. He's also one of the main characters.
  • Princely Young Man: Yuno is regarded as handsome by many people, being referred to as her "meal-saving prince" by Charmy, is emotionally distant, and a talented mage who joins the most prestigious Magic Knights squad. He's later revealed to be a member of the House of Grinberryall and the prince of the Spade Kingdom.
  • Privileged Rival: In contrast to his rival Asta, who was born with no magic at all and joins the worst Magic Knights squad, Yuno was born blessed with great magical power and joins the best squad. Although they both grew up in the same church as orphaned peasants, it's later revealed that Yuno is the son of the Spade Kingdom's former royal family, which explains why he's such an innately powerful mage.
  • The Quiet One: Yuno is one of the quietest characters, speaking only when he needs to express his thoughts and usually silent unless the situation is dire. Flashbacks show that even when he was young Yuno was shy and quiet, in contrast to the more loud, talkative Asta.
  • Rank Up: After the six-month timeskip he's become the Vice Captain of Golden Dawn.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: He has black hair and pale skin, and is noted to be handsome by many people. The Volume 12 Questions Brigade states that he's the most beautiful man among the characters.
  • Razor Wind: Several of his attacks are this, such as Crescent Moon Sickle. As he develops his magic, Yuno favors forming blades out of wind.
  • Really Royalty Reveal: Turns out he's a blue blood from the pre-Dark Triad Spade Kingdom all along.
  • Red/Green Contrast: Childhood friends and rivals Asta and Yuno contrast with each other in various ways. One of these contrasts in the anime portray Yuno's four-leaf clover grimoire glowing bright green when in use, while Asta's five-leaf clover grimoire glows an ominous red.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: He is the Blue Oni to Asta's Red Oni, with the latter having a very excitable personality when compared to Yuno's straight laced one. This contrast was in effect even when they were babies, with Asta loudly crying, while Yuno was sleeping peacefully.
  • Reincarnation: Although all of the humans who hosted elf souls were this, Yuno deserves special mention for being Licht and Tetia's son's reincarnation as his soul is the true wielder of Yuno's wind magic and grimoire, remained within Yuno even after the reincarnation magic was dispelled, and sees himself as Yuno, having been reincarnated into him after dying as a fetus. Therefore, unlike the other victims of elf possession, Yuno still retains sanity and a hold of himself.
  • Relative Button: One of the fastest ways to anger the usually composed Yuno is to harm Asta, his best friend and foster brother. When Sekke attempts to after the Magic Knights Entrance Exam, Yuno stops him with a Tranquil Fury that makes Sekke shiver in fear.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: The weapons he forms while using Spirit Dive are named after the Anemoi, the Greek wind gods of the cardinal directions. Spirit of Zephyr comes from Zephyrus, the Greek god of the west wind. Boreas is named after the Greek god of the cold north wind. Euros is named after the Greek god of the storm east wind.
  • Requisite Royal Regalia: He's actually the crown prince of the Spade Kingdom and was born into the House of Grinberryall, and his complete Spirit Dive forms a complete crown of crosses and regal cape with a fluffed collar.
  • The Rival: He may be The Stoic Blue Oni to Asta's Red Oni, but he takes their rivalry even more seriously than Asta does.
  • Romantic Fusion: Yuno and his spirit companion Sylph fuse together to enter the "Spirit Dive" state. While Yuno sees his relationship with Sylph as purely platonic. Sylph is clearly infatuated with him, asking him to take her out on dates and becoming jealously protective whenever another woman is nearby.
  • Rotating Protagonist: The main trio (Asta, Yuno, and Noelle) are spread out throughout the continent and facing a different member of the Dark Triad shortly after Asta separates from Noelle following their completion of a mission against the Spade Kingdom. Yuno fights Zenon when he and his Dark Disciples attack the Golden Dawn HQ to kidnap Vangeance.
  • Royalty Superpower: The Spade Kingdom royal family has a unique magic passed down throughout generations. With his father Loyce having had Sun Magic and his mother Ciel Moon Magic, Yuno inherited Star Magic, which he gains after obtaining his true Spade grimoire.

    S — Z
  • Satellite Character: He suffers from this in the beginning despite being a main character due to being in a different squad, only interacting with and thinking of Asta. As time passes, his relationships with other characters such as his squadmates is seen more and his origins become important.
  • Say My Name: To Asta as Yuno desperately tries to save him from being killed by Mars.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: In their early childhood, Yuno was the timid, crybaby Sensitive Guy to Asta's determined, brave Manly Man. After Asta stopped a thug from stealing Yuno's necklace, Yuno became more calm and stoic to distance himself from his crybaby past and deeply admires Asta's resolve, sharing his dream of becoming the Wizard King since that day.
  • Sensor Character: As a wind mage, Yuno is particularly good at detecting mana. When his senses are deprived by Catherine, he shows astonishing ability with mana detection, using it to locate her presence and defeat her with Sylph's power.
  • Sharing a Body: It turns out that he shares his body with the soul of Licht's unborn child, but unlike the others whose bodies are used to reincarnate the elves, Yuno is unaffected by the possession; he helps save Asta and Mimosa from Licht and the other elves. It's later revealed that the soul of Licht and Tetia's son never left Yuno after the reincarnation magic was dispelled, and is actually the true wielder of his wind magic and four-leaf grimoire, having been inside Yuno all this time and seeing himself as Yuno.
  • Shout-Out: To Serpico, as Tabata has stated that he is inspired by Berserk. Like Serpico, Yuno is a pretty boy with the power of the wind spirit who serves as a rival to a more physically strong, large sword-wielder.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: After befriending Mimosa and Klaus, having been friendless among his squad because of his peasant background, Yuno switches from wearing his outfit from the clothes he wore when living in Hage to the Golden Dawn uniform.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Even as a child, Yuno was very shy and timid. Although he intentionally became more aloof and composed to never cry again, he's still very reserved, unable to converse with anyone who isn't Asta until he becomes closer to his squadmates, and at times moping whenever he doesn't want to answer something.
  • So Proud of You: Yuno tends to shed his aloofness whenever Asta shows his strength, showing genuine pride towards his best friend for his growth.
  • Sore Loser: He hates losing and describes himself as a really bad loser, so much that he gains some control of Sylph's power out of frustration for being on the losing side. Yuno says that he's completely fine as he sweats excessively when Leopold heats the hot springs to melt his cool off, then cheating by cooling himself off with wind.
  • Spontaneous Weapon Creation: He usually does this with his Wind Creation Magic, forming arrows and blades out of compressed wind to use as projectiles. As he becomes more proficient in his Wind Spirit Magic, he forms weapons named after the four cardinal Greek wind gods. Yuno learns to form the BFS Spirit of Zephyr out of wind to wield while in Spirit Dive during the fight against Zagred. He later gains a spell that forms the halberd Spirit of Boreas, and the bow and arrow Spirit of Euros after storing up his mana for 3 minutes during the rematch against Zenon.
  • Star Power: Yuno's true magical attribute, which he obtains when getting his Spade grimoire after learning that his wind magic is actually Licht and Tetia's son's during his rematch with Zenon. Four spiky stars appear about him, and let him teleport between them and form barriers and blasts of starlight.
  • Stock Shōnen Rival: Subverted. He's introduced as this type of character (tall, handsome, cool-headed, aloof, smart, very talented) but it quickly turns out that he just became very reserved and stoic in an attempt to leave behind his weak crybaby past, and not only does he care deeply (and, by genre standards, pretty openly) about his rival and childhood friend Asta, he's also one of the few people who actually believe in his ability to make it big and views him as his main motivation.
  • The Stoic: His expression rarely changes, even in the direst of situations.
  • Storm of Blades:
    • His spell Wind Blade Shower conjures countless wind blades to launch at an enemy.
    • When using Mana Zone, he can form many wind blades that can cut through spells.
  • Strong and Skilled: Through his heightened mana sensing after temporarily losing his five senses, increased mana control, and training to use Mana Skin at all times, Yuno learns to controls his excessive mana. This leads him to gain the technique of Spirit Assimilation: Spirit Dive, allowing Yuno to hold Sylph's power within him to gain a tremendous boost in mana. He supplements this incredible power boost with fine control, being able to condense wind into bows, swords and other weapons that he can launch with great precision.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: According to Ralph, he's the spitting image of his mother Ciel Grinberryall.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Yuno is usually very calm and emotionless, speaking only when he needs to and is often brutally honest in the process. However, he's much kinder around his foster siblings and Asta, even attacking him with his magic to make him look good at the Star Festival, and eventually some of his comrades in Golden Dawn. He shows himself to be very protective of those he cares for, fiercely fighting to save his foster family from a reincarnated elf.
  • Summon Magic: He learns from a scroll he found in the Treasure Trove, summoning a small pixie that one-shots Mars just by blowing a puff of air at him. This is right after Mars one-shotted Asta. It turns out that the pixie is Sylph, one of the four elemental avatars with her element being wind.
  • Super Mode:
    • His Spirit Dive form by assimilating Sylph. His left arm turns green, a green circle of crosses surrounds his wrist, and he gains a green wing and half-crown of crosses.
    • After some time training and storing mana, he can access a new form called Spirit Dive: Spirit of Boreas, which completes the look of the original Spirit Dive form and arms Yuno with a halberd. With this power-up, he was able to shatter Zenon's extremely durable Bone Magic in one blow.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: Yuno has amber eyes and was born blessed with tremendous amounts of mana and powerful magic.
  • Superpower Lottery: Yuno was born with immense magical power and is a brilliant prodigy at using it. And his Wind Magic is soon enhanced by Sylph, the elemental spirit of wind, choosing him as her partner. This is downplayed because, while he is incredibly gifted, his power isn't a story-breaker. Furthermore, even he isn't strong enough to defeat powerful enemies like Licht, Zagred, and Zenon by himself. He later learns that his Wind Magic is actually Licht and Tetia's son's, finding out he has his own strength and receiving his Spade grimoire and real magic, Star Magic which is unique to the House of Grinberryall. Using his new Star Magic with his Wind Magic lets Yuno even the odds against a now devil Zenon during their rematch.
  • Sword and Sorcerer: Asta is the Sword to Yuno's Sorcerer whenever the two team up together. Asta is the only person in the setting who cannot use magic, and wields giant anti-magic swords to fight up close and cancel enemies' magic. Yuno is a gifted mage blessed with a four-leaf clover grimoire, and casts ranged spells such as gales and blades of wind from afar.
  • Sworn Brothers: Due to growing up in the church together, Asta and Yuno consider each other as family and more connected than people who're related by blood.
  • Talented, but Trained: Yuno was born with immense magical potential and even as a child he had a talent for magic. Despite this, as shown in flashbacks, he trained very hard to meet others' expectations for him, and like Asta he trains rigorously for six months to prepare for the Magic Knights Exam.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: A full head taller than Asta and taller than most of the teen characters, black-haired, noted by many people to be handsome, and a cool, calm demeanor.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: Black-haired, handsome, 172 cmnote  at the age of 15, and can be sharply critical with his honesty at times, especially around Asta and Klaus.
  • Time Stands Still: Neverland stops time but allows everyone in it to keep moving, a counter to Lucius' time magic.
  • Theme Naming: His Star Magic spells' names, "Quartile Hasta" and "Quartile Scutum", and "Quartile Flaegllum", come from real-life constellations and Latin words.
  • Tornado Move:
    • Yuno's spell Towering Tornado forms a large one that can send an enemy flying. After learning Mana Zone, he can form it inside an enemy's spell to destroy it from the inside.
    • His Tornado Fang creates a large drilling tornado strong enough to blow away many enemies as well as shatter rock.
  • Training from Hell:
    • He's subjected to this by Mereoleona at the Yultim Volcano, where he practices Mana Skin.
    • Yuno puts himself through this in the days leading up to the assault against the Spade Kingdom to defeat Zenon. He encounters Langris and asks him to train him, with the former Vice Captain agreeing to it.
  • Tranquil Fury: How his anger is unless he really gets enraged. He stops Sekke from harming Asta with a cold look on his face that makes the latter shiver.
  • Trash Talk: Says this to Zenon after telling Yuno and Langris that they'll die without even having made him take a single step. Yuno uses his complete Spirit Dive and Spirit of Boreas to overpower his Absolute Space and pierce Zenon's defense to blow a hole into his chest.
"You were talking to the wrong guy."
  • True Companions: With Asta. They were left at the church's doorstep on the same day and have been together since then before becoming Magic Knights. He later proclaims that Mimosa and Klaus are this to him as well.
  • Tsundere: Platonic example, but yes, really. The third novel that has Yuno as the central character gives him quite a bit of monologue about his relationship with Asta:
The Yuno that exists today is here because of that day when they decided to share the same dream, because of that moment when they decided to compete over who would become the Wizard King. Instead of following behind him, he wanted to see the same scenery as Asta. In other words, the reason he has been able to do his best all this time is all because of Asta. Of course, he had no intention to ever say all that. It would be too embarrassing. He was sure that, even in the future, he’ll continue to dodge the issue by joking around like this [...] Besides, he can inspire Asta more by making jabs at him rather than by giving him a simple "thank you".
  • Two Guys and a Girl: The core trio of the series consists of Asta and Yuno as the Two Guys and Noelle as the Girl.
    • Also, his usual companions within his own Golden Dawn squad are a guy (Klaus) and a girl (Mimosa).
  • Undying Loyalty:
    • Different from many other shonen rivals, Yuno has a deep friendship with Asta and both of them try to encourage each other. At first, he was the only one that fully believed that Asta was able of getting a grimoire and, even with the risk of dying against Mars, he kept being inspired by Asta's motto of never giving up.
    • He's loyal to Vangeance, who took him into the Golden Dawn and treated him kindly despite Yuno being a peasant. He saves Patry from Zagred to protect Vangeance's body, and defends him to the captains at the meeting, describing him as reliable and kind regardless of whether he betrayed the kingdom once. He desperately tries to convince them to let him join the elite force that will attack the Spade Kingdom to save him.
  • Unknown Rival: He's the target of Alecdora's intense envy for being favored by Vangeance in spite of being a peasant. Yuno, on the other hand, doesn't care about Alecdora's dislike of him. When they fight at the Royal Knights Examination and Alecdora proclaims that he'll be the one to fulfill Vangeance's dreams, Yuno easily destroys his spell from within and dismisses him, telling Alecdora the only dreams he cares about are his own.
  • Unwanted Harem: Charmy and Sylph both fall for him, and after the timeskip he has many fan clubs in the kingdom, all of whom he's completely indifferent to.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Non-villainous example. His personality was much more sweet in his childhood than in the present. He used to cry a lot and was much more shy, and was always looking up to Asta instead of teasing him. The change was most likely due to the promise he made to himself of never crying again, after Asta protected him against a robber.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: In Spirit Dive, he can use the spell Spirit Storm, unleashing a giant beam of green mana. It's stronger when Yuno casts it while using Mana Zone, allowing him to fire it from behind Licht.
  • Weapon-Based Characterisation: Forms weapons using his Wind Magic and later Star Magic that reflect his personaliy.
    • His Sword of Zephyr manifests in correspondence with the boost he got from the elf reincarnation, acting as a reflection of Asta's own BFS and Yuno's determination to outpace his friend.
    • His Swift White Bow reflects his aloof nature and tactical approach to combat.
    • His Spirit of Boreas is a halberd, the melee weapon manifesting during his rematch with Zenon after the latter brutally injured and/or killed most of the Golden Dawn.
  • Weirdness Censor: He doesn't care that he suddenly has elf ears, and when people point it out, he either pretends it's normal or gives far too short and completely false answers as to why they're like that:
  • When He Smiles: Yuno usually has a calm, stoic face but when he does genuinely smile it's this. When he smiles at seeing Asta at Kiten, Sylph gets jealous and Charmy calls it a refreshing breeze. One of his squad members notes it's a better look for him.
  • Wind Is Green: He's a powerful wind mage, and his grimoire and mana are green, with some of his spells having a significant green tint to them.
  • The Worf Effect:
    • Him, Klaus, and Mimosa suffer this at the hands of Mars, despite being from the best squad and Yuno's ace tendencies. This serves the purpose of demonstrating how freakishly powerful Mars is, and Asta would need more than standard determination and anti-magic to defeat him.
    • Asta and Yuno are easily defeated by a reincarnated Licht, who did not even have his grimoire, despite using their transformations. This is to show that defeating the newly reincarnated elves won't be easy.
    • Yuno's defeat by Zenon, who only uses 55% of his devil's power despite Yuno being ranked a Zero Stage at this point, establishes the Dark Triad as an extremely powerful group of mages. He later gets easily overwhelmed by Zenon after he makes a deal with Beelzebub to become a devil, after nearly killing him in his 100% devil power form.
  • World's Most Beautiful Woman: A Rare Male Example. According to the Volume 12 Questions Brigade, Yuno is the most beautiful man among the characters.
  • Wrecked Weapon:
    • His Spirit of Zephyr is cut through by Zenon's bone sword shortly after he releases 55% of his devil's power, with a defeated and impaled Yuno seen right after.
    • Yuno's Spirit of Boreas and stars get broken by Zenon's Demon Sword Dansleif during their fight. He has a new star born to teleport behind Zenon to destroy his heart through his Saint Spirit of Zephyr.
  • "X" Makes Anything Cool: His first outfit has him wear a pair of brown belts that cross each other in an "X" shape.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: In Chapter 1, when Asta is about to give up against Revchi after learning he has no magic, Yuno states that Asta is no loser and his rival, which motivates Asta and helps him gain his grimoire.
  • You Are in Command Now: As vice captain of the Golden Dawn, he acts as captain after Vangeance is captured by Zenon, taking his place at the captains' meeting.
  • You Killed My Father: The Dark Triad killed Yuno's parents, the royal family of the Spade Kingdom. When he meets Zenon, Yuno recognizes him from Ralph's memories that were shown to him of the Dark Triad's coup of the Spade Kingdom. Zenon and his Dark Disciples' massacre of the Golden Dawn is only more reason for him to want revenge against him.
  • Young and in Charge: Following the six month time skip, Yuno is 17 and now the new Vice Captain of Golden Dawn. Made even more impressive by the fact that he had joined the Magic Knights at the age of 15, the youngest age possible, and attained his position after only 18 months.

"Everyone called me a genius. They said I was the hope of the village. I was chosen. Acknowledged. Envied. Hated. Trusted. I suffered loss... and I swore."
