Devils

Powerful and malevolent, these otherworldly entities require a ritual including a sacrifice to appear in the living world. Despite spending most of the first saga in the sidelines, they are eventually revealed to be responsible, or at least complicit in the misfortunes of many characters in the series.

    In General
  • Always Chaotic Evil: Subverted. Hell is exactly as cruel and vicious as the legends say it is, with a culture that practically worships discrimination and hate crime just like the Clover Kingdom does, but on a greater scale. All of the devil nobility we've seen so far are self-absorbed scum whose only goal is to attain power by crushing the weak by the thousands, and they've enforced that mindset on their underlings. On the other hand, there are enough Token Heroic Orcs, namely Liebe and Nacht Faust's familiar devils, to prove that they can differ from right and wrong but still choose to be evil.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It is unknown how they interact with grimoires from other kingdoms. While they need a four-leaf grimoire user to fall to despair in the Clover Kingdom, this obviously wouldn't apply in other countries like the Spade Kingdom.
  • Ancient Evil: The three Rulers of the Underworld are basically this, with all three being the strongest supreme Devils residing in the lowest level of the Tree of Qliphoth whose presence likely predates for no less than multiple centuries.
  • The Chain of Harm: Hell runs on this trope. Rather than demons being born inherently evil, the Devil Lords use their overwhelming power to enforce a culture of Might Makes Right, meaning the lower-ranked demons are encouraged to bully even-lower-ranked demons all the way down. This ensures that whichever lucky demon gets summoned will then encourage power-grubbing to the humans that summon them, ad nauseum.
  • Conservation of Ninjutsu: High Ranking Devils are said to be insanely powerful — the first time the magic knights run into Zagred, one of the many high-ranking devils of the underworld, it's considered serious business and it took basically every human and elf in the vicinity piling up on him to even take him down. Fast forward to the Final arc, Yuno takes down a whole swarm of similar devils on his own.
  • Curse: The main reason anyone bothers summoning them in the first place is the fact that they can inflict incredibly potent curses on their summoner's targets, which are almost impossible to get rid of afterwards.
  • Dark Is Evil: Black is their primary color and they're all extremely dangerous and violent.
  • Deal with the Devil: Their terrifying abilities attract interest among certain denizens of the living world who thus proceed to forge contracts with them.
  • Demonic Possession: They are capable of this, whether their host is complicit or not. They seemingly have limits, however, as Licht turned himself into a demon specifically to avoid becoming possessed by Zagred.
  • Glass Cannon: Subverted. Without their healing factors or wards, Devils have little skill in defending, having almost no instincts to conventionally block or dodge attacks. However, most of them, especially the stronger ones, are extremely bulky and are by no means frail, even if they are cut apart by Anti-Magic.
  • Horns of Villainy: A common trait every devil has, no matter what their shape, is that they possess horns on their head.
  • Living Shadow: Their form in the living world, unless they have a five-leaf clover grimoire.
  • Monstrosity Equals Weakness: The lesser devils tend to look like disfigured monstrosities. The middle layer ones are still disfigured, but vaguely humanoid. The high-level ones or Supreme Devils look very near human in terms of appearance, with slender, proportionate features and are way stronger than their lesser counterparts. The only exception to this is Liebe, who is categorized as a lowest ranking devil but otherwise has bodily features commonly seen in high-level or supreme devils.
  • Not So Above It All: Some of their personality quirks clash with their otherwise malefic personalities.
  • Our Demons Are Different: They are vaguely similar to most traditional depictions of demons, but require a very specific type of grimoire to manifest their true forms and powers. Also, they're seemingly separate from actual "demons", which otherwise normal elves and humans can turn themselves into due to exposure to certain kinds of magic as shown by Licht and the two princes of the Spade Kingdom, and are a separate race entirely.
  • Sorting Algorithm of Evil: There are seven levels of the underworld of which ten devils are matched to the Qliphoth in separate locations. The deeper the level, the stronger the devil, with Lucifero the final and most powerful devil. The upper devils are as strong as the Dark Triad while the lower devils are even more powerful.
  • Speech Bubbles: All of the Qliphoth Devils that appeared with speaking role thus far have their own specially designed speech bubbles that represent their aspects or magic.
    • Lucifero's speech bubbles are shaped after tides, which are formed by the gravitational force between the Earth and the Moon.
    • The margin of Megicula's speech bubble is covered in black spots, similar to the shared eyeshadow of the Agrippa Family that serves her.
    • Beelzebub's speech bubbles are shaped after irregular polygon, fitting the geometry design of the Spacial Magic's effect.
    • The margin of Lilith's speech bubbles are full of icy spikes, and Naamah's speech bubbles are shaped after flames. Their Fusion Dance form's speech bubbles are shaped after a large piece of iceberg, albeit with a mildly fiery frame.
    • The lower edge of Adrammelech's speech bubbles are drops of flowing liquid. His magic is currently unspecified, but it can be assumed that it is associate with liquid materials.
  • Summon Magic: What they need to enter the world of the living.
  • Super-Empowering: Devils grant their hosts their attributes and increased the power of their hosts' innate magic. Liebe gives Asta the power to use his anti-magic energy through the five-leaf grimoire, Lucifero greatly enhances Dante's Body Magic, letting him regenerate his entire torso and making him unable to die, and also grants him its Gravity Magic, Megicula gives its host Vanica its Curse-Warding Magic which lets her cast powerful curses and Paladins with a purified devil possessing them can use their highly powerful magic, which when combined with their heavily increased intellect, form some of the series' deadliest Elite Mooks.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: With a few notable exceptions, devils don't have any sort or sense of tactics other than being so inhumanly strong that they could take out most mages with or without their magic. This leaves them very vulnerable to the human's various tactics, especially in front of Lucius's stealth manipulations.

High-Ranking Devils

Qliphoth Devils

    Lucifero

Lucifero

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lucifero_square.png

Voiced by: Jeremy Schwartz (English)

Debut: Chapter 243 (Manga), Episode 162 (Anime)

Magic Attribute: Gravity

"All of you. Bow... your heads."

The highest-ranked devil of the Tree of Qliphoth who serves the Dark Triad leader Dante and the Shadow Dictator of the Diamond Kingdom Morris. Lucifero is one of the three rulers of the underworld and resides on its lowest level.

The devil of gravity, powerful enough to level the Black Bulls' base and make captains prostrate before him by slamming them into the ground.

  • And Show It to You: Has this trope inflicted on himself by Adrammelech. After the heroes painstakingly achieving the impossible and defeating Lucifero, Adrammelech takes advantage of his loss and rips out his heart.
  • Arch-Enemy: He is one to Liebe for killing his adoptive mother, Licita and for trying to possess Liebe to try and get to the human world. However, when they end up meeting after Asta's Devil Union foils his attempt to fully manifest in the human world, he makes it crystal clear he has no interest or recollection of them beyond them being the current focus of his wrath for daring to interfere with his arrival.
  • Barehanded Blade Block: One of the first things he does is take a page out out Sosuke Aizen's book and casually block Asta's anti-magic sword with a single hand, while the latter was in devil union. He does, however, get cut when he draws his finger across the blade's edge in curiosity of it's unique properties, so it's less that the blade cannot cut him and more that he was strong and fast enough to pinch it between his fingers and hold it in place mid-swing.
  • Beast of the Apocalypse: He's the strongest of all devils, and Nacht believes that if he's released from the underworld, the living world will be finished. He also forces everyone to bow after him using his gravikinesis when he makes his entrance, something quite similar to what the biblical Beast does in the Book of Revelation.
  • Big Bad: As the strongest devil and ruler of the underworld and after the Dark Triad and Morris's defeat, Lucifero takes on this role after he finally appears when his manifestation is half-complete as the true main antagonist of the second saga.
  • Bishōnen Line: When his manifestation is half done, he turns from the combined blob of mid and low-ranking devils into a more humanoid but, if anything, much more eerie appearance more befitting of the demon king.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Despite witnessing Liebe's Anti-Magic and rage firsthand when Asta goes berserk drawing upon his devil's power during the first fight with Dante, Dante asking him outright if he recognizes Liebe has Lucifero state he doesn't know and dismiss Liebe as a low-ranking devil based on said Anti-Magic. This is despite the fact possessing Liebe was his original, opportunistic plan for an attempt to invade the human world and lead to his defeat at the hands of an otherwise normal human. When Liebe asks if he remembers him, he questions why he'd even remember a scum like him without any magic. When he starts to get his ass kicked near the end of the fight, the fear jogs his memory.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: To Patry. A victim of the elf massacre at the hands of Clover royals, Patry believes humans are inherently evil, selfish creatures. It's later revealed that he was the Unwitting Pawn of a devil and has a change of heart, choosing to work with humans against their shared enemy. Lucifero on the other hand, is one of the three rulers of the underworld and his host is a human that plans to create a world of malice by creating the Tree of Qliphoth but he sees other humans that oppose him as inferior. Contrasting Patry who was unwittingly manipulated by a devil, Lucifero himself is a devil that wants to lay waste to the human world.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: He delivers one to the Magic Knight Captains and they barely did anything to him despite having their magic power increased to face him.
  • Demonic Possession: As the strongest of all devils he can take control of the bodies of low-ranking devils. When the second Qliphoth gate opens he combines them into a gross blob through which he can manifest.
  • Demon Lords and Archdevils: In Chapter 243, Lucifero states that Zagred is a high ranking devil like himself. It's revealed that he is the strongest of all devils and lives in the lowest level of the underworld.
  • The Dreaded: As the strongest devil, Nacht fears his complete manifestation as it would mean the end of the world. He's feared even by the other supreme devils, who don't even try to attack Dante despite their sadism because it might piss off Lucifero. When he half manifests, Adrammelech warns people to get out of there, and terrifies Asta when he appears right next to him, angry at him for trying to stop his manifestation. He easily lives up to his status by treating Asta's Devil Union, an otherwise unbeatable trump card able to inflict damages and mortal wounds against even the highest-ranking of demons, as little more than an idle curiosity, manhandling him with contemptuous ease and threatening to kill the bystanders in the area of their 'fight' simply by approaching nearby them, his natural magic causing the very earth to crumble beneath him. And if you're wondering about everyone else, just don't — he simply throws all of them into the ground like ragdolls without even so taking a single scrape. Even powerhouses like Mereoleona or Yuno do literally nothing against him. Nacht's fears are absolutely justified because all of the above is when he's "only" 50% manifested.
  • Dirty Coward: Seeing Asta rise to his feet despite holding him down with his gravity magic and receiving a Death Glare from the boy, actually scares Lucifero for a moment. Angry at this turn of events, he then turns around and tries to make his escape, vowing to crush the heroes for reducing him to just a floating, limbless thing. This doesn't stick, as Yuno simply teleports him back in front of Asta, in time to receive the final blow.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: He serves as the main antagonist for the majority of the second saga, and while the fight against him certainly has the trappings of a Final Boss, he is taken out before the final arc begins and his defeat is revealed to have been planned by Lucius Zogratis, the true mastermind behind the plot to summon the Tree of Qliphoth.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The first thing he does when half-manifested? Make everyone bow their heads by slamming their bodies into the ground then direct his prideful anger at Asta for trying to stop his manifestation.
  • Evil Is Petty: Every minor injury or inconvenience sends him into a level of rage that would be totally comical if it wasn't for his ability to kill pretty much everyone on the planet with no effort if Asta and Liebe didn't have a way to stop him. This includes beating the shit out of Asta for getting a cut from Asta's sword, when Lucifero was the one who grabbed it to test if it could harm him in the first place.
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: The King of Devils has four black, bat-like wings.
  • Grand Theft Me: Attempted to do this to Liebe to gain a body in the living world. He was thwarted by Licita, who was fatally stabbed by him.
  • Gravity Master: His magic is Gravity Magic, which his host Dante can use. After his manifestation is half-finished, he makes his appearance making everyone fall with their entire bodies into the ground and leveling the Black Bulls' base.
Vanessa: Just by existing, he forces all creation to its knees!!! People, spells, and even fate!! So this is the king of devils!!
  • Greater-Scope Villain: While Zagred might have set most of the main setting into motion with his manipulation of the humans and elves, Lucifero technically holds dominion over him as the most powerful devil of all. He serves Dante and is the source of his power, with Dante acting on Lucifero's behalf to form the Qliphoth and bring Lucifero to the living world. Not to mention the fact that his attempt to possess Liebe and murder of Licita when she stopped him is the reason Liebe ended up sealed within the Five-Leaf Grimoire in the first place, which gave Asta Anti-Magic.
  • Horns of Villainy: Has not two but four horns fitting for the strongest devil of them all. Interestingly, they bare a resemblance to the Horns Asta grows in Devil Union form, though Lucifero's back pair resembles a more traditional curved pair of devil horns, whereas Asta's resembles a Bull's. Through his battle with Asta and the heroes, he steadily loses his horns over time thanks to Liebe's Anti-Magic.
  • It's Personal: Zigzagged. He outright tells both Asta and Liebe that they're nothing to him when he actually meets the two of them, despite his close personal connection with both of them, being the murderer of their shared mother figure and the reason why Liebe developed his Anti-Magic and was sealed away in the five-leaf grimoire for Asta to later find, but at the same time he also makes it clear that he's currently very, very angry with the pair of them for how they've interfered with his planned ascension and forced him into a half-complete form.
  • The Juggernaut: He repeatedly proves himself as this when he first manifests. Up until his fight with Lucifero, Asta's Devil Union was an unbeatable trump card that tore apart high-ranking devils to shreds yet it's a minor inconvenience to Lucifero. The Magic Knight Captains are some of the most powerful warriors in the Clover Kingdom yet Lucifero treats them as mere fodder. The one thing that has shown to actually harm Lucifero is Asta's Anti-Magic but even then Lucifero is fast and strong enough that even with a diversion the most Asta could do was clip one of his horns. It ultimately takes Asta's True Devil union nullifying his magical advantages and defences for him to be fought on even ground, and even after he's reduced to 1/3 of a torso, he would have killed both Asta and Liebe with his Gravity Master powers if not for Yami and Nacht's last-minute interference.
  • Kill All Humans: Plans to slaughter every last human simply because they have the potential to defeat him.
  • Kneel Before Zod: Forces everyone around him to do this when he manifests and thinks that their heads are 'held too high by burying them into the ground'' with his Gravity Magic.
  • Lean and Mean: The devil king shows a thin, wrinkled appearance when his manifestation is halfway done.
  • Lightning Bruiser: On top of his astronomical magic, he also has amazing physical skills even while incomplete, stopping Devil Union Asta's sword with a hand and then punching him so hard he can't focus his sight afterwards.
  • Literal Split Personality: The Lucifero that manifests before Asta and the rest of the magic knights was only half of him at 50% of his overall magic power and strength, with the remaining half left behind in the lowest level of the underworld. This half briefly appears in chapter 332, in Lucius' flashback as to what he was doing whilst the battle in the Spade Kingdom was unfolding, having already defeated the weakened remnant of Lucifero and consuming its half of his heart and magic power with it. What is seen indicates that whilst their minds aren't linked and thus they don't share information between both sides, this aspect of Lucifero is in essence a complete copy of him as he first appeared on Earth, and expresses similar disbelief upon his own defeat and death.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is the Italian pronunciation of Lucifer, the fallen angel who rebelled against God and is equated with Satan in Christian traditions. In The Divine Comedy, Satan is referred to as Lucifer and imprisoned in the lowest circle of hell. Fitting for the devil in the lowest level of the underworld whose host's name is Dante.
  • Minor Injury Overreaction: A self-inflicted example. After stopping Asta's sword with his bare hand, he tests it himself by pressing the blade with his finger. His reaction to shedding a drop of blood from it? Being furious that 'garbage' like Asta could dare harm him and sending him flying with a punch to the face. In chapter 320, after Asta manages to slice off one of his horns, Lucifero goes absolutely ballistic and beats Asta within an inch of his life.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: In chapter 326, when Nacht and Yami attempt to strike Lucifero from behind, Lucifero responds by sprouting an additional pair of arms similar to Dante's mutated form and impaling them both. Asta then proceeds to relieve him of all his appendages once he activates his True devil union, carving Lucifero into chunks as he futilely attempts to attack him with any remaining limbs during their five-second clash.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Has an emaciated, wrinkled body despite having the physical strength and speed to stop Asta's sword with his bare hand mid-swing and then punch him hard enough that he can't focus his sight afterwards.
  • Nightmare Face: Has a viciously distorted expression on his wrinkled face directed at Asta for trying to stop his manifestation. And again when he sheds a drop of blood from his finger from pressing Asta's Demon-Slayer Sword, enraged that it could even minimally harm him.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: When Asta manages to slice off one of Lucifero's horns, Lucifero delivers an absolutely savage beatdown and would've likely killed him had Yuno not stepped in.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: After spending most of the fight against the heroes in a murderous rage for daring to fight him Lucifero's face suddenly goes blank after Yami and Nacht manage to wound him. He then tells them that he acknowledged the power of humans and as a reward he will utterly destroy every human on the planet.
  • Personality Powers: For a supreme devil with an overblown sense of self ego and looks down at others like trash, Lucifero fittingly has the power of gravity.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: After half manifesting, he has the incredible gravity magic to shatter the ground and surrounding mountain range with his power.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Along with his obvious hatred of humans, there's particular subtext to how he treats women, referring to Mereoleona as a "wench" when she attacks him, and Licita (whom he brutally murdered) as "that worthless bitch" who stopped him from killing Liebe years ago.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Has both Dante and Morris as devil hosts. After Dante is defeated by Magna, he fully allies himself with Morris, having him modify the Qliphoth with his devil power to make it so that he'll come out of the second gate.
  • Pride: He dismisses Asta's and Liebe's Anti-Magic as "mediocre" and fitting of a low-ranked devil. When he makes his formal appearance, he makes those nearby bow their heads by making their bodies (head included) ingrain into the ground. He then punches Asta to the ground for having the gall to put a single scratch on his finger when he ran it along Asta's sword to see what effect it would have. This fittingly plays a role in his final defeat, as he's able to take True Devil Union Asta off-balance by levitating a platform of rock from beneath him to smash him upwards, but uses the opportunity to get closer and attack, rather than retreat and gain distance, even though he's aware that his physical attacks aren't hurting Asta as much anymore. If Lucifero had used his magic to get away from Asta, his Union would have run out and he would have won, but rather than retreat from an 'inferior' opponent, or accept that he couldn't beat him into the ground in his current state, his pride blinded him to the danger Asta possessed, leading to him getting carved to pieces in an instant when he willingly stepped back into his opponent's range.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: The king of devils and highest-ranked devil is naturally the most powerful of them all. So much so when he is about to partially manifest, Adrammelech tells people to run.
  • Satan: Lucifero's name is Italian for Lucifer, he's the strongest devil in the lowest level of the underworld, and would end the world if he emerges. What really separates this from a mere Satanic Archetype is according to Damnatio his other name is Satan. He's the literal Old Scratch out to wreck havoc.
  • This Cannot Be!: Running away from Asta, only to find himself teleported back in front of the boy's sword by Yuno, has Lucifero expressing this with his face.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: When Liebe confronts him about killing Licita, Lucifero questions why he'd even remember magic-less trash like him with a disgusted face, then calling him and Asta the unforgivable ones before destroying the surrounding landscape with his magic. After Asta and Liebe cut Lucifero to pieces during their perfect Devil Union, Lucifero loses it and vows to utterly destroy his foes.
  • Too Powerful to Live: Despite he's only 50% manifested, the Magic Knight's confrontation against him is less of a battle as it is Lucifero simply running all over them, and Asta is the only person even capable of remotely harming him because of his Anti-Magic. Of course, just like Zagred and Megicula, he's justifiably taken down before he can fully manifest. Lucius Zogratis, who successfully defeated the remaining half of him left in the underworld on his own, indicates that the only reason he was successful at that was because Lucifero weakened himself through his partial manifestation on Earth, unable to use his full might to defeat Lucius, exactly as the latter planned. Given that Lucius' Time Master abilities make him otherwise unbeatable in a fight, it emphasizes how powerful Lucifero's complete might was that he still needed to use underhanded methods to defeat him.
  • Tranquil Fury: After spending the fight against the heroes getting increasingly furious with them for even daring to attack him he does a complete 180 after Yami and Nacht's joint attack makes him bleed. He very calmly acknowledges the power of the humans and admits they are capable of killing him and then proceeds to explain that he will wipe out every single human on the planet with the power he now has.
  • Undignified Death: Considering his sheer arrogance about his own power, and his disgust at those without magic, its rather fitting that Lucifero loses to Asta and Liebe's Anti Magic attacks, reducing him to a limbless mass Frieza style, and forcing him to fly away in humiliation before he is smacked one more time and knocked out by a blow from Asta's normal Anti Magic sword. And as if to rub salt in his wounds he's killed after being knocked out by Asta by Adrammelech ripping his heart out after refusing to help him during his fight. And then at the start of Chapter 332, Lucius outright mocks him before eating his heart.
  • Unknown Rival: To Liebe, who hates him for killing his adoptive mother Licita when he tried to take over his body to come to the human world. Despite this, he doesn't remember him when he's asked by Dante about a devil with Anti-Magic. After he's partially manifested when Liebe asks if he remembers him Lucifero questions why he would remember 'scum that doesn't have a single shred of magic.'
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Lucifero doesn't have any tactics save for possessing strength and magical power so inhumane that not even juggernauts like Mereoleona can actually hurt him, and he could block Asta's anti-magic sword with his bare hands before violently beating him into the ground despite it works on him like other devils. This in the other hand, allows the magic knight captains and Yuno to distract him until Asta recovers and slices him into pieces. Lucius later gleefully rubs it into his face moments before he kills him by eating his heart, that while he might have the strongest magic, humans are way more skilled in using theirs.
  • Unwitting Pawn: It turns out that Adrammelech not helping Lucifero in his battle and Lucifero losing was all part of Lucius Zogratis’ plan to gain the strongest devil's heart.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Over the course of his battle with the Clover Kingdom Captains, the Black Bulls, Yuno and Asta/Liebe, Lucifero is at first annoyed, then steadily gets angrier and angrier at the fact that his opponents just simply don't want to go down. As Asta and Liebe achieve perfect Devil Union, Lucifero is humiliatingly reduced to a limbless body. Scared by Asta's tenacity, he tries to run away but is defeated nonetheless, screaming at his loss.
  • Villain Respect: After spending the entire battle in a state or rage (after seeing Asta can actually harm him) or annoyance (at the rest of his enemies refusing to stay down), Lucifero finally begrudingly expresses a sliver of respect for his enemies when Yami manages to cut his arm.
Lucifero: It's possible... for humans... to end me. I... acknowledge you.
  • We Will Meet Again: Defied by the heroes after Lucifero is reduced into a limbless mass thanks to Asta and Liebe's perfect Devil Union with the King of Devils vowing that once he retrieves the other half of his power in the underworld he will be back to finish them off. Yuno simply teleports Asta right to Lucifero and informs him that there isn't going to be a next time allowing Asta to smack Lucifero directly with his Anti Magic sword and win the fight. And encase you thought that there was going to be some last minute save for Lucifero, nope, Adrammelech rips his heart out after the fight reducing him to dust and finally ending him for good.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: The King of Devils has long white hair. And he's not a pleasant being to be around.
  • The Worf Effect: After his 50% manifested form was killed in the Spade Kingdom raid, in Chapter 332, Lucius defeats his other half in the seventh layer of the underworld without even so taking a scrape before seemingly taking a bite out from his heart, killing him off for real.
  • Worf Had the Flu:
    • Many years ago before the start of the story, Lucifero had the opportunity to enter the human realm by using Liebe as a way to do so. Instead, he's thwarted by Asta's mom, Licita, an otherwise normal human. That said, it's justified as Devils aren't at full power without their body in the human world, and even then he still killed her in the process, while also forcing her to seal Liebe away so he wouldn't get that same opportunity again. In the present day he is able to actually manifest in the living but is only 50% complete. That doesn't stop him from effortlessly overpowering the Clover Kingdoms Magic Knight Captains however.
    • At the climax of his fight with the magic knights, Asta and Liebe finally managed to manifest their True Devil union, which instantly nullifies the magic of whatever Asta touches and enables his sword to leave unhealable wounds on his target. This means that when Lucifero punches him, his magically-enhanced strength is nullified and the slashes he receives in turns leave him more and more incapable of fighting close-range, as Asta carves him to pieces in under 5 seconds. Furthermore, Lucifero cannot affect Asta with his gravity magic in this state, nor can his magic protect him against Asta's physical blows, meaning he's overpowered in a close-range fight with a Lightning Bruiser because all of his overwhelming magical power is incapable of helping him against his opponent anymore, forcing him to fight on Asta's terms for their brief one-on-one.
    • Chapter 332 reveals that the remaining half of him left behind in the seventh layer of the underworld was defeated by Lucius Zogratis solo. However, Lucius alludes to the fact that his time magic gave him a particular edge against the weakened Lucifero, who'd lost half his magic and strength when it manifested on earth against Asta and the rest of the magic knights, and even with his status as the strongest Wizard king in history, he wouldn't have been able to overcome Lucifero at full strength, so he instead manipulated the situation to deal with the strongest devil on a more manageable level of power on two fronts.
  • World's Strongest Man: He is the strongest devil in the series no questions asked, even while half manifested and having half of his power he was able to catch Asta’s sword with a single hand, while the latter was in his Devil Union form and then punched Asta so hard, he couldn’t see straight afterwards. Lucifero also curb stomps the Magic Knight Captains and barely flinched after all of them attacked him, calling all their attacks pointless. Not even Mereoleona the Uncrowned, Undefeated Lioness, was able to land a single hit. He more or less wins his fight with the magic knights, with his victory coming undone only because Asta's True Devil Union is capable of negating his magical advantages and inflicting wounds that won't regenerate, preventing him from leveraging any of his strength properly for its duration.
Adrammelech: Lucifero's magic is beyond amazing, and so are his physical skills. Even if he's not complete. An ant can't beat an elephant, no matter how strong or weird it is.
  • Wound That Will Not Heal: Asta's True Devil union causes his sword to inflict these on him, shown by the fact that Lucifero cannot regrow any of his missing extremities sliced off by him whilst in this state even when forced to fight close-range and rapidly losing limbs to attack with. It becomes Downplayed once the Union wears off though, as Lucifero is shown to be growing new flesh to replace his missing parts around the wounds, but at a speed that is clearly slower that it would normally be for a being of his immense magical powers, playing a part in Asta being able to land the finishing blow afterwards, as Lucifero cannot regrow his body quickly enough to physically defend himself.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: He does this to his other devil host, Morris and thanks him for his service for speeding up the process of opening the Qliphoth tree gate.

    Beelzebub

Beelzebub

Debut: Chapter 238 (Manga), Episode 161 (Anime)

Magic Attribute: Spatial

One of the highest-ranking devils of the Tree of Qliphoth who serves the Dark Triad member Zenon. Beelzebub is one of the three rulers of the underworld.

  • Beelzebub: One of the supreme devils of the underworld is fittingly named after one of the most well-known demon princes of mythology.
  • Deal with the Devil: Makes a deal with Zenon after he gets shot through by Yuno's Spirit of Euros arrow, getting a devil's heart in return for all of him, even his soul so long as the Spade kingdom continues existing.
  • Space Master: The devil of space, which his host Zenon can use.

    Astaroth

Astaroth

Debut: Chapter 331 (Manga)

Magic Attribute: Time

One of the highest-ranking devils of the Tree of Qliphoth who serves Lucius Zogratis. Astaroth was one of the three rulers of the underworld before he vanished from the underworld at least 20 years ago and his seat was taken by Megicula.

  • Mysterious Past: The only thing we know about Astaroth for now is he used to be a high ranking devil who vanished from the underworld and was succeeded by Megicula.
  • Time Master: The devil of time, which his host Lucius can use.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's very hard talking about Astaroth without revealing that he had vanished from the underworld and Megicula took his place in the Qliphoth over 20 years ago, which ties into The Reveal about who his host really is.

    Lucifugus

Lucifugus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lucifugus_profile_2.png

Debut: Chapter 286 (Manga)

Magic Attribute: Dark

One of the highest-ranking devils of the Tree of Qliphoth.

  • Evil Is Not a Toy: It shows Nacht that high-ranking devils are not to be trifled with when it kills the ritual participants after being summoned, and Morgen has to sacrifice his life to destroy the relic used for its summoning to stop the ritual.
  • Meaningful Name: Its name is the Latin pronunciation of Lucifuge, a demon from Western esotericism who is connected to Sathariel of the Qliphoth. Lucifuge itself means "he who flees the light", and its summoning led to the death of Nacht's brother Morgen, who is strongly associated with light with his name meaning "morning" in German.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Played With. Even with its power suppressed in the Devil-Binding Ritual, it's still powerful enough to terrify Nacht and easily kill the ritual participants.

    Megicula

Megicula

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/megicula_profile_7.png

Voiced by: Genki Muro (Japanese), Christopher Corey Smith (English)

Debut: Chapter 222 (Manga), Episode 162 (Anime)

Magic Attribute: Curse-Warding

"Even though you are abysmally inferior to us, sometimes you cast spells that go beyond our expectations. Humans truly are intriguing."

The devil of curses, weakening spell arrays that affect her and placing powerful curses on others.

One of the highest-ranking devils of the Tree of Qliphoth, she's the one who cursed Acier Silva, leading to her death, when Noelle was an infant. A long time ago, she also made a deal with the Agrippa family and serves the Dark Triad member Vanica. As the parent of all curses, all the living world's curses are derived from Megicula.

——

  • Agony Beam: She curses Undine to lay down in pain, and just being around it puts Lolopechka under agonizing pain as well thanks to her curse.
  • Animate Dead: She controls an army of 100 corpses from her and Vanica's experimentations imbued with the power of Vanica and Acier's Steel and Blood Magic, with them fighting Rill and Charlotte.
  • Arch-Enemy: Serves as one to House Silva (Especially Noelle and Nozel), after fatally cursing Acier to death and cursing the entire house.
  • Baddie Flattery: Calls them "marvelous" when Noelle, Nero, and Lolopechka's plan to seal her almost works. She calls Charlotte "splendid" for being the first one to ever oppose her curse.
  • Bad Powers, Bad People: Her magic is described by Undine as "hideous" and can induce fatal curses and agonizing pain on others. Fits with a sadistic devil.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: She thought that Lucifero was unaware of her plans to go to the human world and thus, slowing down the Tree of Qliphoth gate, but Lucifero was well aware of this and her plans were all for naught.
  • Counterspell: Megicula's Decaying World weakens spells and supplementary rune arrays, even Charlotte's magic which she developed to be effective against curses.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: She has dark patches around her three eyes, befitting the appearance of a supreme devil.
  • Curse: Megicula's Curse-Warding Magic is this, letting her cast powerful curses that could seemingly do anything to anyone she hits with it.
  • Cute Monster Girl: Her appearance when she finally fully appears shows a childlike form with long light hair whose appearance and presence as a Qliphoth devil is no less terrifying for it.
  • Dark Action Girl: When she manifests through Vanica's body, she shows the cruelty and power fitting a supreme devil, easily subduing Rill, Charlotte, and Noelle with her curse-warding magic. And it's implied that she isn't in full power at that time.
  • Demon Lords and Archdevils: In Chapter 243, Lucifero states that Megicula is a high ranking devil.
  • Duality Motif: When Megicula possesses Vanica's body, she takes over the right half, turning it black with white hair and dark goat horns and wings in contrast to Vanica's normal skin, black hair, and blood attachments on the left.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Despite finding humans fascinating, she's simply unable to understand why they continue to struggle and cling to hope even in hopeless situations, as devils don't even bother defying higher-level ones.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: When manifesting through Vanica, she's shown to have cat-like pupils on all three of eyes with a dotted circle around them.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: She has an eye in the middle of her forehead. And her wings sport eyes throughout.
  • Facial Markings: Has three dotted lines coming from each of her eyes towards the sides of her face.
  • Familial Foe: Pretty much qualifies as this for the Silva Family, having fatally cursed Acier, fighting Noelle when she manifests through Vanica's body and trying to break her spirit, and Nozel expressing his desire against the devil.
Nozel: How dare you show yourself in front of my family again. You have no idea how long I've waited for this moment!!
  • Faux Affably Evil: She might be one of the most polite devils who speaks in an unwaiveringly calm tone and acts like a curious little girl with an interest with understanding humanity, but she does literally nothing to hide her true nature as one of the most sadistic entities the Magic Knights had to deal with.
  • For the Evulz: Her cursing Acier to death and attempting to sacrifice Vanica and Lolopechka is to allow herself to fully manifest. Giving Lolopechka and Undine her curse? It Amused Me. Turning Lolopechka into a devil just because she could and forcing the heroes to fight her? This.
  • The Ghost: Only a silhouette of the devil is shown, and she is yet to personally get involved. She takes over Vanica's body in Chapter 254 and makes her first formal appearance in Chapter 297.
  • Graceful Loser: Calmly accepts her defeat at the hands of Noelle and Nozel, stating that she had misjudged the true strength of humans and wondering if that's why she let herself take an interest in the power of human emotions.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Along with Lucifero of the second saga. She is responsible for placing the curses on the House Silva and the princess of the Heart Kingdom, and it's later revealed that as the source of all curses she was responsible for Charlotte's childhood curse. Now it's no coincidence that Vanica, who is her host, is invading the Heart Kingdom, where Noelle is with the princess.
  • Having a Blast: Her Exploding Life detonates anyone she cast a curse on, which would have killed Lolopechka and everyone in the Spade Castle if Asta didn't show up with his Anti-Magic.
  • Healing Factor: Has a high-speed regeneration curse that lets her completely regenerate from Gaja's sacrificial ultimate magic.
  • Hero Killer: Is the source of the fatal curse that killed Acier Silva, Clover's strongest captain and the strongest woman in the kingdom at the time, and Gaja tries to sacrifice his own life to use his Ultimate Magic to try to destroy her.
  • Humans Are Special: Megicula is fascinated with humans for their ability to surpass expectations and create new spells. However, while intrigued, she cannot understand why humans would continue to struggle in spite of being in a hopeless situation, as devils would never disobey a higher-level one as they see it as futile. She's simply unable to understand this when Noelle asserts why not giving up is a special human strength.
  • Instant Runes: She can create many runes with her magic to bind Nero and destroy Lolopechka's Ludic Sanctuary.
  • Irony:
    • The first devil whose name was revealed, yet mentioning her comes at the risk of getting cursed.
    • She claims that "low level devils won't defy higher-level devils" to mock Noelle's insistence in taking her down. When the heroes fight Lucifero, a devil of the highest order, Adrammelech and Liebe, two demons lower in ranking than him, flat-out prove her claims wrong.
  • Kick the Morality Pet: Even as a devil, she has some fondness for Vanica for hosting her for such a long time. She still makes it clear that she needs her dead to fully manifest in the human world.
  • Mad Scientist: She has a curious nature in conducting magical experiments, feeling genuine delight in learning about Secre's Arcane Stage Sealing Magic and how it almost sealed her own magic and cursing Undine to see how her magic would affect the water spirit. She enjoys using humans are test subjects due to their ability to surprise her in spite of their inferior power to devils.
  • Multiboobage: Her appearance when she manifests is reminiscent of this, with countless appendages resembling breasts surrounding her body.
  • No-Sell: Thanks to her Curse-Warding Magic, rune arrays are ineffective against her, allowing herself and Vanica to easily break out of Nero's Mana Method: Eternal Prison.
  • Odd Name Out: Is the only devil not based as one of said devils represented in the Qliphoth. This makes even more sense when it turns out that she took Astaroth's spot.
  • One Degree of Separation: Bizarrely, she acts as one between the House Silva and the Agrippa Family.
  • People Puppets: Megicula uses her magic to make Lolopechka, who she's turned into a devil, fight her allies. She uses her spell Unbound Slave to place rune arrays on Vanica's head, taking control of her body and having her unleash her Blood Magic.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Megicula thinks it's best to kill Lolopechka immediately to destroy the Heart Kingdom's living wisdom. However, Vanica decides to kidnap her to have a strong enemy to fight in Noelle. It's later revealed she likely desired so to complete her Malevolent Femcantation sooner to manifest, requiring the deaths of three powerful female mages.
  • Prehensile Tail: Has a long tail ending in the shape of a heart, the same symbol that appears on Vanica when she uses high percentages of Megicula's devil power.
  • Production Throwback: The marking that appears around Vanica's eye when Megicula takes over is a reference to the one that appears for users of the Mendelian Peas from Tabata's previous manga Hungry Joker.
  • Rule of Three: She doesn't need to appear from opening a gate to the Tree of Qliphoth, but can descend through the presence of the souls of three vastly powerful female mages (Vanica, Lolopechka, and Acier) tied to her Curse-Warding Magic, which allows her to partially manifest after having fatally cursed Acier and Vanica is left at near-death by Noelle.
  • She's a Man in Japan: Inverted. The English translation calls Megicula the "father of all curses", while the original Japanese text uses the gender-neutral "parent". When Megicula makes her formal appearance, the devil is shown to have a feminine figure with long hair and a childlike form.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: Speaks softly, notably in normal text compared to the all capital letters used by most manga characters, while expressing her desire to toy with humans even more. When Noelle angrily questions what she did to Lolopechka, she calmly tells her that she tinkered with her curse to turn her into a devil to give her good memories before she dies.
  • Speak of the Devil: Literally. Even merely talking about her curse will put one in risk of being cursed themselves. Nilenia Agrippa seems to be either immune, or is already inflicted by a milder curse.
  • Speech Bubbles: Her speech bubbles are lined with dots, distinguishing them from Vanica's own when she takes over half her body, which turn out to be the same design as her Facial Markings when she manifests after Vanica's defeat by Noelle.
  • Stationary Boss: Stands her ground for her entire fight, and while this allows the protagonists to ultimately outflank her, it allows her to fall with much more dignity than any other Devil who's battled in the series, including Lucifero.
  • The Stoic: She reacts to virtually nothing - not to torturing numerous people to death, not to half-a-dozen magic knights overpowering her, not even to dying.
  • Too Powerful to Live: Since she failed to actually sacrifice Lolopechka and Vanica, she isn't fully manifested and thus isn't in full power when she's been confronted by a bunch of characters, and even then she's still a major pain to fight against. Had she ever go through with all the sacrifices, she would most likely go virtually undefeatable and will lead to astronomical levels of chaos and harm.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Megicula has no battle tactics other than using her immensely powerful devil magic to make sure opponent's can't even scrape her or to instantly cripple or kill opponents regardless of their strength. Just like Vanica, she also tends to prod around her enemies just to get them mad under the belief that they can't do jacks against her.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: She has long, flowing light hair, and is a cruel, sadistic high-ranking devil who enjoys cursing beings, wanting to kill them off when her curiosity is satisfied and she loses interest.
  • Wicked Heart Symbol: Megicula's tail ends in a heart-like shape, which appears on Vanica's torso when she uses her devil power at high percentages, and Megicula herself has a childlike form in spite of being a sadistic, cruel devil.

    Baal

Baal

Debut: Chapter 365 (Manga)

Magic Attribute: Atmosphere

One of the highest-ranking devils of the Tree of Qliphoth.

  • Blow You Away: Has the power of the Atmosphere magic.
  • Meaningful Name: His name comes from Baal, the first King of the Ars Goetia and is connected to the Gharab of the Qliphoth.

    Adrammelech

Adrammelech

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/adrammelech_profile_0.png

Debut: Chapter 317 (Manga)

One of the highest-ranking devils of the Tree of Qliphoth who is in the second level of the underworld.

  • Combat Commentator: Serves this role during Lucifero's fight with the Magic Knights instead of partaking himself, noting that it's hopeless against the demon king thanks to his incredible physicality and happenings such as Mereoleona's body losing form thanks to coming closer to mana.
  • The Dragon: He’s one to Lucius Zogratis, the 4th Zogratis sibling and the true identity of Julius the Wizard King.
  • Enigmatic Minion: Adrammelech's exact plans and motivations throughout the fight with Lucifero are unknown. He flat out refuses to help Lucifero during the fight but makes no effort to help the heroes either, being content with merely staying on the sidelines. After the heroes defeat Lucifero he sincerely congratulates them on their victory before moving in and tearing out Lucifero's heart while he is defenseless, noting that this was what he wanted all along. And instead of killing the weakened heroes, many of whom can't fight back, he simply leaves with his prize. Soon after it's revealed he's working under Lucius Zogratis and took Lucifero's heart for him.
  • Lazy Bum: Nonchalantly turns down Lucifero's order for him to fight Yuno and Mereoleona, saying that it's more fun watching the devil king fight them instead. Given the reveal he's working for Lucius Zogratis, it's heavily implied that he refused to help him to have him killed by the magic knights and take his heart.
  • Meaningful Name: His name comes from Adrammelech, a demon known as the Chancellor of Hell who was originally worshipped as an ancient Semitic sun god and connected to Samael of the Qliphoth.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After the heroes triumph over Lucifero, Adrammelech rips out his heart and leaves the battlefield, despite being in a position to wipe out everyone due to their weariness, which is Justified considering they weren't what he's going for. He then leaves to give the heart to Lucius.

Magic Attribute: Demon Ice (Lilith), Demon Flame (Naamah)

Two of the highest-ranking devils of the Tree of Qliphoth who are in the first level of the underworld.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Asta severs Naamah's hand as he arrives at the scene to save Nacht.
  • Blood Knight: They have enjoying Slasher Smiles on their faces from fighting Asta, feeling more entertained than they ever had during their centuries in the underworld.
  • Combination Attack: Many, combining their ice and fire together while fighting Nacht and later Asta.
  • Creepy Twins: They have very similar appearances, speak in tandem with each other, and are one of the highest-ranking devils with the creepy appearances to match.
  • Duality Motif: In their fused form, the left half clearly comes from Naamah while the other half is from Lilith.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: In their fused form, they have two eyes running vertically down their mask.
  • Fire/Ice Duo: Lilith uses Demon Ice Magic, while Naamah uses Demon Flame Magic.
  • Fusion Dance: After Naamah gets vertically bisected by Asta, Lilith fuses with his body, with their power increasing massively.
  • Giggling Villain: Constantly giggling to themselves.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be:
    • Naamah gets vertically bisected by Asta using his Demon-Slayer Sword.
    • They're killed while fused when Asta and Liebe in Devil Union cut them in half vertically.
  • Ironic Fear: As Nacht points out, despite being supreme devils with incredible magical power what they fear is a magic-less human and devil before they get killed by them.
  • Just Toying with Them: They were playing with Nacht the whole time they fought him, wanting to hear his screams of agony and despair until the very end. When he attempts a Taking You with Me to invoke Sealed Evil in a Duel, they stop holding back and easily destroy the apparently inescapable prison.
  • Karmic Death: They die at the hands of Liebe, the lowest-ranking devil who was toyed with by them in the underworld, while in Devil Union.
  • Mask of Power: In their fused form, their half masks merge to create a full one.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Lilith is the name of a class of female spirits who became a female demon in Jewish mythology. In the Zohar, she seduced Adam with Naamah and gave birth to the plagues of mankind. Also, Lilith is connected to Gamaliel of the Qliphoth.
    • Naamah is the name of a female demon in Jewish mysticism. In the Zohar, she seduced Adam with Lilith and gave birth to the plagues of mankind. Also, Naamah is connected to Nehemoth of the Qliphoth.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Lilith's dress exposes her cleavage and navel, while Naamah has a deep v-cut from the dark energy he's covered in.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Their magics are able to burn or freeze even invisible concepts like shadows, but while fused they can form a gigantic Freezing Sun with their massive magical power bigger than the entire Spade Kingdom Capital.
  • Semantic Superpower: Their magics allow them to burn and freeze anything, even shadow and light as well as invisible concepts.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: They speak with soft tones as they sadistically toy with Nacht, wanting to hear his screams of despair and pain.
  • Sphere of Power: While fused, they can create a gigantic sphere of ice and fire larger than the entire Spade Kingdom Capital.
  • What Is This Feeling?: They question what this feeling is as they dread dying at the hands of Asta and Liebe while they're in Devil Union. As Liebe points out, it's fear.

Other High-Ranking Devils

    Zagred

Zagred

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zagred.png

Voiced by: Showtaro Morikubo (Japanese), Kellen Goff (English)

Debut: Chapter 196 (Manga), Episode 115 (Anime)

Magic Attribute: Word Soul

"Elves and humans… Your dreams and ambitions make such excellent playthings!!"

A devil who is the true mastermind of the elves' massacre, killing them personally and tricking the royals into stealing their mana on Licht's wedding day and casting the spell that suspended their souls so that they would be reincarnated and become easy for him to manipulate. He did all this to obtain a five-leaf grimoire and body in the living world.

He uses the powerful Word Soul Magic, which makes anything he says become reality.

  • All According to Plan: He says this after gaining a body, stating that Patry followed his plan that relied on him resurrecting the elves, gathering the magic stones, and summoning the Shadow Palace needed for him to come to the living world. He also predicted that Patry would be consumed by despair, turning his grimoire into a five-leaf grimoire that Zagred would use.
  • Arch-Enemy: To Lumiere and Licht. Zagred is responsible for the Elf massacre and Lumiere's presumed death, and they return centuries later for the sole purpose of killing Zagred once and for all.
  • Arc Villain: Though Zagred only appeared in the Elf Reincarnation Arc, he's the one responsible for most of the first saga, masterminding the elves' massacre and the one who manipulated Patry to get revenge on humans. In the end though, he's just a devil who serves under ones more powerful than him.
  • Big Red Devil: Big Black Devil, but he looks the part with bat-like wings, horns, claws, a demonic tail, and wisps of dark energy radiating off him.
  • Black Magic:
    • Being a devil, he can freely cast Forbidden Magic, using the spell that suspended all the elves' souls so that they would be reincarnated.
    • He utters Black Speech while using his magic, summoning eldritch monsters that absorb mana and life from anything that they touch.
  • Break Them by Talking: He intentionally does this to Patry, telling him that it was him who masterminded the humans' attack on the elves, reincarnated them, and that Patry had followed his plans all along. By doing so, he obtains Patry's grimoire as his own and turns him into a dark elf as an enemy for the heroes.
  • The Chessmaster: He took advantage of the humans' desire for magic power to construct a very convincing and elaborate scheme; on the day of Licht's wedding, he possessed a minister and told the Clover Kingdom royals that the Elves want to harm them, so the royals took one of Lumiere's magic tools and used it to siphon the elves' mana. Then, he lured Lumiere to an empty chapel and bound him with his magic, preventing him from interfering. After that, he arrived to the wedding grounds and massacred the Elves in a way that resembles the prince's handiwork. For an outsider, this would look like as if Lumiere was a deceitful psychopath who baited all the elves and Tetia into the wedding ground, conspired with the royals to steal the elves' magic then killed all of them using a light spell. Lumiere and Secre arrive, but it was too late as the death and destruction were already done, and Licht turned into a destructive demon to avoid being possessed. Finally, when Secre seals him, he casts the reincarnation spell on Patry so the elf boy would be subsumed by hatred and unwittingly release him into the material world where he would cause mass chaos as he always wanted to. In the present day, he also infiltrated within the elves' ranks amidst all the chaos without a single elf or human having an idea that something is very amiss until the elves almost thought that their reincarnation is cemented but allowed him to manifest instead.
  • Conditional Powers: As powerful as his Word Soul Magic is, it has its limits:
    • He can't outright command someone to die, forcing him to have to summon weapons and monsters from the underworld.
    • His magic is ineffective against Dark Magic, which affects the underworld. As a result, he's forced to actually dodge Yami's attacks as opposed to cancelling them out. When he's vertically bisected by Yami using Mana Zone, he can't heal himself and it gives the opening for Asta to kill him.
    • The power of his magic is proportional to the amount of mana he injects into his words. Therefore when he was framing Lumiere he had to use magic tools to make his magic look exactly like the prince's, because in his soul form he has nowhere near as much mana to replicate the real thing.
  • The Corrupter: By possessing a minister, he convinced the humans to turn against the elves, telling them that the elves wanted to harm the kingdom so they use Lumiere's magic tool to steal the elves' mana. He notes that it was easy as the humans were greedy and power-hungry anyways.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Using his Word Soul Magic, Zagred easily defeats Patry and impales him on iron spears, with his words emotionally breaking and turning him into a dark elf.
  • Dark Is Evil: A devil shrouded in dark energy with a pointed tail and bat-like wings, and the one who orchestrated the elves' massacre.
  • Demonic Possession: He possessed the human minister in the past to convince the humans to slaughter the elves. One the elves are reincarnated, he possesses Baval and then Ronne before finally gaining his body.
  • Demon Lords and Archdevils: In Chapter 243, Lucifero states that Zagred is a high ranking devil.
  • Devil's Pitchfork: He conjures a trident that dismantles anything it touches, and is a devil who functions as the Satanic Archetype.
  • Did Not See That Coming: He does not expect Yami to use his Dark Magic and Mana Zone to slice him from such a huge distance. When Asta takes advantage of it to destroy his heart, he can only express his horror in his dying moments.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Despite his status as the Greater-Scope Villain and eventual Big Bad of the first arc, there's more to come after him, and he's not the only devil lurking around in the world apart from Liebe.
  • Evil Is Petty: For all the death and misery he causes against humans and elves alike, his motivation is only as simple as giving himself a body and more power so he could unleash mass chaos. His scheme against the elves is so underhanded that it's also not any better.
  • Eviler than Thou: When he makes his presence known in front of Patry, he makes it clear that he's a way nastier threat than the elf he used as a pawn for a much less pleasant goal.
  • Fantastic Racism: He looks down on both humans and elves, viewing them as playthings who were foolish enough to follow his plans.
  • Foreshadowing: For The Reveal that he was behind the elves' reincarnation and massacre:
    • When Vetto opens his Evil Eye, he unleashes eerie magic that Yami describes as abominable, implying that he was reincarnated by demonic means. It's later revealed that it was not Licht but Zagred, a devil from the underworld, who reincarnated the elves' souls with Forbidden Magic.
    • The reincarnated elves act absolutely spiteful and hostile against humans beyond any form of reason as a side effect of the Forbidden Magic, hinting at its sinister origins as the work of a devil.
    • Chapter 148 shows Lumiere used Light Magic, described as being incredibly rare, and became close friends with Licht, proclaiming his hope that humans and elves could understand each other and live in harmony. Despite Lumiere's non-chalant and friendly attitude throughout the whole thing, the elves were killed by Light Magic believed to have been his. It's later revealed that it wasn't Lumiere who was the mastermind of the massacre but Zagred, who lied to the royals and imitated Lumiere's magic to kill the elves. He's also not as strong as the wizard king at that time, so he also used magic items and arrays to make his ruse more convincing.
    • In Chapter 179, Baval, an elf in the body of David Swallow, approaches Mimosa, but doesn't attack her and runs, instead leaving her remarks about how everyone in Clover Kingdom is going to get killed anyway and she should give up. In chapter 182 the same elf appears, but he only low-rolls his Dice Magic before making his way into the Shadow Palace. According to Tabata, that's not Baval, but Zagred impersonating Baval before he switched himself into Ronne. Baval actively avoiding extended confrontations make more sense when Zagred's goal is to use the Shadow Palace to fully manifest himself, so he has no reason to engage in unnecessary fights.
    • In Chapter 195, when Mimosa finds the unconscious body of Baval/David, she notes that there are faint traces of magic floating around that belong to neither humans nor elves. Zagred, a devil, had possessed his body before taking over Ronne.
  • From a Single Cell: Licht's spell that uses the combined power of the reincarnated elves destroys his body except his heart, which allows him to regenerate his entire body when he forces a mouth to grow there to speak. It requires Yami catching him off guard by bisecting his body, Yuno destroying his spears in time, and Nero healing Asta for him to finally destroy his heart.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He is the one who deceived the humans into turning against the elves, committed the elf genocide in a way that can be attributed to Lumiere and cast the forbidden Reincarnation Magic, leading Patry to become the main villain of the story. Patry, unaware of Zagred's role, follows his plan of reincarnating the elves, gathering the magic stones, and summoning the Shadow Palace. This leads to Zagred gaining body in the living world, his goal all this time, so he can spread chaos and destruction to fulfill his sadistic desires.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Yami slices him vertically in half using his Dark Cloaked Slash — Equinox. While it's not enough to kill him and he's able to hold together by just the barest amounts of connecting tissue, it does heavily injure and incapacitate him, and Asta takes advantage of this to land the killing blow.
  • Hate Plague: The reincarnation magic he casts imbues anyone it reincarnated with hate, allowing him to better manipulate and/or possess them. The victims also believe that their thoughts and actions are theirs, although they somewhat aren't.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Think by overwhelming him you can get through his Word Soul Magic? The mouth on his head isn't the only one that can cast it.
  • Identity Impersonator: He possessed and impersonated Baval when the Golden Dawn elves are attacking Clover Castle, then switched places with Ronne's body when inside the Shadow Palace without anyone ever noticing it until it's too late. To make the cover even more convincing, he even uses his Word Soul Magic to copy his host's magic.
  • Lean and Mean: He has a thin, almost emaciated-looking body and is extremely evil.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Zagred manipulated the human royals to siphon mana from the elf tribe, copied Lumiere's Light magic to massacre the elves and frame him for genocide, broke Licht to the point that he transforms into a demon to avoid possession, then casted reincarnation magic on Patry so he would unlock the Shadow Palace that he could use to fully manifest and wreck havoc. The magic also imbues all reincarnated elves with hate, allowing Zagred to easily manipulate them as well. All the while when Patry believed that he was working for a noble goal and didn't have a single knack about what was going on, until Zagred himself rubs it into him.
  • No Name Given: He's referred to as the Word Soul Devil until Chapter 243, whose name is revealed by Lucifero, Dante's Devil.
  • No Ontological Inertia: Averted. Despite this being standard for the series, his magic doesn't disappear after he dies and continues to cover the Shadow Palace, forcing everyone to evacuate immediately.
  • Obviously Evil: His extremely demonic, creepy appearance, which is formed when Yuno's magic stone is placed on the Shadow Palace altar, immediately lets readers know that a villain worse than Patry has been introduced.
  • Organ Dodge: Thanks to being a devil he can move his heart, his weak spot, to avoid would-be fatal attacks. From there, it's as simple as growing a mouth on the organ itself to declare "Heal" and restore his body. Yami's attack bisects him vertically, preventing this and allowing Asta to finally defeat him.
  • Power Copying: His word soul magic can be used to copy someone else's magic. This is how he made Patry believe that Lumiere betrayed his kind (through mimicking the prince's light magic), and he also copied Baval and Ronne's magic when he was impersonating and possessing them to infiltrate the elves.
  • Reality Warper: His powerful magic is able to make almost anything he says become real, and he can seemingly cast whatever spell he wants by simply uttering the words. The only limit is that he can't outright kill someone with it, so he can't say "Die!" and they'll suddenly drop dead.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His red eyes highlight his evil, demonic nature.
  • Sadist: His desire for a body is to spread as much destruction and pain wherever he goes. He revels in Patry's despair once he finds out the truth.
  • Satanic Archetype: A high-ranking devil who is the true mastermind of the conflict between the humans and elves, taking advantage of the royal's green to convince them to steal the elves' magic by telling them that the elves wanted to harm them, and single-handedly committed genocide against the hapless elves. His desire for a body comes from an urge to wreak destruction wherever he goes, and he takes great pleasure in Patry's despair once he finds out the truth. He even uses a trident, which is traditionally wielded by the Devil.
  • Scary Teeth: Noticeably pointed, small teeth and very evil.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Secre used her Sealing Magic with the power of the magic stones to seal him for five centuries. The seal wore off by the time Patry had reincarnated into the body of Vangeance.
  • Spontaneous Weapon Creation: Thanks to his magic, he can summon swords, spears, and a trident instantaneously.
  • Storm of Blades: He can create a swarm of swords that Asta can't even destroy because they’re real blades instead of being made of mana.
  • Summon Magic: He can summon blob-like monsters from the underworld that absorb mana and life force.
  • Superpower Lottery: His Word Soul Magic can create almost anything he needs by speaking it out, making it ridiculously versatile. Besides outright causing his opponents to die, it can create almost anything he needs and summon giant monsters that absorb life force and mana. It's even mentioned during the fight just how powerful his magic is. It takes the combined power of many characters to finally defeat him.
  • This Cannot Be!: In his final moments, he can only express his horror at being defeated.
  • Too Many Mouths: When Asta and Yuno's teamwork actually overwhelms him, he gets pissed, and hundreds of red, jagged mouths open up to start destroying them.
  • Too Powerful to Live: Up to his introduction he's easily the most powerful being introduced thus far, with his Word Soul Magic able to do anything he says and summon monsters from the underworld. Had he succeeded in escaping to the living world, he would have spread rampant chaos. Thus, shortly after he appears he's killed thanks to the combined efforts of numerous characters.
  • Undignified Death: From his viewpoint. Despite manipulating the elves and humans for 197 chapters off-stage, he's killed within 17 chapters after he appears physically thanks to the combined efforts of the very humans and elves he mocked, and is ridiculed by a devil he previously looked down shortly before dying.
  • The Unfettered: Will do anything to grant himself a body and the ability to instigate mass chaos, even if it means causing widespread suffering and misery.
  • Walking Spoiler: His mere presence alone twists everything you know about the first half of Black Clover. The Assorted Question Bridgade in vol. 24 pushes it further by revealing that he didn't just order the elf genocide, he committed it personally.
  • Words Can Break My Bones: His word soul magic can do whatever he speaks aloud and is not limited by attribute like most magics. Return reflects Patry's Light Magic back at him, Vacuum Wall sucks in Yuno's Wind Magic, Heal restore his injuries, etc.
  • Worf Had the Flu: He mentions at the start upon revealing himself that even though he acquired a physical body, it was still incomplete and thus cannot use his full power.
