    In General
  • Black Cloak: The kingdom's Mage Warriors wear blue cloaks as part of their standard uniform that obscure their eyes.
  • Child Soldier: Mage Scholars perform human experiments on children with powerful magic to have them become Mage Warriors. They're seen implanting mage stones and performing surgeries on the children to give them new abilities. Mars, who has two magic attributes, and Ladros, who can absorb and release mana as lasers, are the direct result of these experiments.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: For all their military superiority, one of their armies is utterly defeated by Zenon and Zenon alone, with said army including two members of the New Generation of the Eight Shining Generals.
  • Fur and Loathing: Most of their higher-ranked officers wear fur.
  • Eviler than Thou: By the beginning of the six month Time Skip, it's been mentioned that most of the Diamond Kingdom has been conquered by the Spade Kingdom.
  • Military Mage: Its Mage Warriors are this, led by generals under the direct orders of the king to invade other countries because of the kingdom's poor resources.
  • Old Soldier: Technically, three of the Old Generation members of the Eight Shining Generals and to a lesser extent Lotus.
  • The Rival: To the Clover Kingdom due to being a nearby country that's built up its army to invade its neighbors.
  • Super-Soldier: Morris, their chief scientist, is responsible for various experiments to produce a number of these, which later on become the new generation of the Eight Shining Generals.
  • Theme Naming: With the Clover, Spade, and Heart Kingdoms, they are named after the four French suits of playing cards.
  • The Worf Effect: Chapter 227 ends with shocked scouts from the Clover Kingdom witnessing what appears to be the aftermath of a Curb-Stomp Battle where Zenon seemingly effortlessly defeats an entire military unit of the Diamond Kingdom's mage warriors including at least two members of the New Generation of the Eight Shining Generals.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?? It's unclear what happened to the Diamond Kingdom when Lucius unleashes Judgement Day on the Clover Kingdom, since only the Grinberryall regime of Spade Kingdom and the Heart Kingdom are present to stay put for Clover.

Click here to see him while using his devil power

Voiced by: Masayuki Akasaka (Japanese), Chuck Huber (English)

Debut: Chapter 79 (Manga), Episode 53 (Anime)

Magic Attribute: Modification + Gravity

A magic scholar who works for the Diamond Kingdom, running a series of experiments on children to boost the kingdom's power, and has been controlling the country's king. After being forced out by Mars, Morris works with the Dark Triad and becomes the devil host of the ultimate devil Lucifero.

He uses two types of magic, the devil Lucifero's Gravity Magic and his innate Modification Magic, letting him alter the structures of physical and magical targets. When boosted by devil power of Lucifero, Morris's magic can affect even intangible concepts like knowledge and dreams.

  • Badass Transplant: Weaponized. He uses his magic to transplant Lolopechka's wisdom into himself, using this information to accelerate the Tree of Qliphoth's growth.
  • Bad Powers, Bad People: The magic to extract others' powers and surgically implant them into others or himself fits with a villain like him who's willing to experiment on children and kill them when they're no longer useful.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Morris turns out to have formed this with the Dark Triad after he was forced out of the Diamond Kingdom by Mars, with Morris healing and strengthening Dante as well as having designed the mobile fortresses to harvest the magic power needed to form the Tree of Qliphoth. He becomes the Big Bad after the Dark Triad is defeated, and no longer needs them after modifying the Tree, now being the one responsible for the Advent's continued advancement, until…
  • Big Bad Wannabe: He gets defeated rather quickly by the Black Bulls soon after they arrive despite being the host of Lucifero. And after his defeat Lucifero reveals that he has been squeezing the life force out of Morris so he can be able to open the gate even faster.
  • Bio-Augmentation: His Modification Magic. In the past, he used it to stitch Mars's mineral grimoire with Fana's flame grimoire. With the power of Lucifero, he uses it to transplant Lolopechka's wisdom into himself.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: His eyes when using his devil power are almost completely black, and he's an Evil Genius working with the Dark Triad to bring devils into the living world.
  • Body Horror:
    • The devil host marking across his forehead opens up to become Lucifero's mouth through which he speaks with Morris.
    • He uses his Modification Magic to break apart the body of mid-ranking devils and reform them into a giant, misshapen double-headed form and have their tendrils come out of his fingers to attack.
  • Combat Tentacles: Using his Modification Magic boosted by Lucifero he can sprout tendrils of devils he modified out of his fingers.
  • Dark Is Evil: A devil host with eyes of darkness, and tortured children he experimented on and joins forces with the Dark Triad to bring devils into the living world.
  • Demonic Possession: Like the Dark Triad, Morris is a devil host. He turns out to actually be the host of Lucifero, who calls him more reasonable than Dante.
  • Disability Superpower: As Morris states, he was born blind in exchange for being blessed with the abilities of a devil host. While being blind he is a very intelligent magic scholar who's able to strengthen mages via his Modification Magic, and later transplants into himself the combined wisdom of the past Heart Kingdom princesses, using this knowledge to accelerate the Tree of Qliphoth's growth.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Sally. Both are unhinged scientists who have a desire to experiment on human beings which led them to be ousted by their respective countries. However, after being betrayed by the Eye of the Midnight Sun Sally chooses to help the Clover Kingdom, and is even chosen to be part of the special assault force against the Spade Kingdom. Morris, on the other hand, chooses to work with the Dark Triad after being forced out by Mars. And Sally herself wears glasses while Morris was born blind in exchange for having the powers of a devil host.
  • Evil Cripple: Morris is blind, which does not stop him from being behind the Diamond Kingdom's actions and working with the Dark Triad to let devils pour into the world.
  • Evil Genius: He's a highly intelligent magic scholar who has performed experiments on Diamond Kingdom soldiers to strengthen them as well as surgically modify a mage to give them another magic attribute, which is impossible unless you're a hybrid or high-ranking devil host. He later gains the combined wisdom of the Heart Kingdom's princesses.
  • Evil Sorcerer: He's the mage who performed the Diamond Kingdom's experiments on children. He's also working with the Dark Triad, having made the Candelo which collected the magic needed for the Advent of Qliphoth as well as healing and strengthening Dante. After the Triad are defeated, he takes up the role of the Big Bad.
  • Eye Scream: Behind his glasses, while using his devil power his eyes are revealed to be two mouth-like gaps full of darkness.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: He wears tinted glasses and is an inhumane magic scholar who experimented on children and is working with the Dark Triad.
  • Genius Cripple: Blind but still a genius scientist, and now with the combined wisdom of the past princesses of the Heart Kingdom after translating it into himself from Lolopechka.
  • The Glasses Come Off: He takes off his glasses, showing his eyes of darkness and manifesting black markings down his face while using his devil power as a devil host and the transplanted wisdom of Lolopechka to act as an accelerant for the gate of the underworld.
  • Gravity Master: As Lucifero's host, he uses his Gravity Magic, slamming the Black Bulls' base into the ground.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He is said to be the one behind the operations of the Diamond Kingdom, and he was the one who threw out Fana after he found her useless.
  • Horned Humanoid: Gains Lucifero's curved dark horns on his head when using his devil power.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: His volume profile spells his name as "Moris".
  • Mad Scientist: He conducted experiments on children to make Super Soldiers for the Diamond Kingdom. He's later revealed to be working with the Dark Triad, having made the Candelo collecting the magic needed for the Qliphoth ritual. He expresses the desire to dissect the Black Bulls for their interesting magics.
  • Marked Change: Using the abilities of a devil host gives him markings on his face identical to Dante's. Which later turns out to be because he's actually the host of Lucifero.
  • Meaningful Name: The name "Morris" originates from the Old French "more", meaning "moorish" or "dark". He turns out to be a devil host, with black markings on his face when using devil power and pitch-black eyes.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Getting run out of the Diamond Kingdom by Mars led him to work with the Dark Triad, who would conquer the Diamond Kingdom, to conduct his scientific endeavors.
  • Power Parasite: His magic lets him extract and transplant others' powers, using it to enhance Diamond King soldiers by embedding them with magic items, and with his power as a devil host he transplants Lolopechka's wisdom into himself. Morris uses this knowledge to make himself an accelerator for the Tree of Qliphoth's growth.
  • Powers as Programs: His Modification Magic can extract and implant others' magical powers, implanting Fana's Flame Magic into Mars which is seen in his stitched up grimoire. He uses his magic, enhanced by the power of a devil, to implant Lolopechka's magical wisdom of the Heart Kingdom princesses into himself, using it to learn how to make himself an accelerator for opening the gate of the underworld.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Gains demonic wings when using Lucifero's devil power.
  • Powers via Possession: He's the devil host of Lucifero, enhancing his magic to modify even intangible concepts like dreams and making it possible for him to extract and transplant even Lolopechka's wisdom into himself.
  • Semantic Superpower: What his Modification Magic becomes after he becomes Lucifero's host, letting him modify even intangible concepts like Dorothy's Glamour World and modify the Tree of Qliphoth so that Lucifero can come out of the second gate.
  • Shadow Dictator: Morris has been the one controlling the Diamond Kingdom through the shadows, turning it into a more militant country. He's later forced out by Mars, and works with the Dark Triad.
  • Sinister Shades: He wears dark glasses that hide his eyes, and is a Mad Scientist willing to conduct inhumane experiments on children.
  • Super-Empowering: Thanks to his magic, he was the one who implanted magic items into Diamond Kingdom soldiers, increasing their power, and gave Mars his Flame Magic by stitching his grimoire with the dead Fana's.
  • Superior Successor: Is Lucifero's devil host after Dante, who had been his host for years prior. Lucifero outright calls Morris a more reasonable host than Dante.
  • Tested on Humans: And he throws away the subjects who have failed him.
  • Tom the Dark Lord: A major villain who teams up with the Dark Triad... named Morris. He later becomes the Big Bad after the Triad are defeated.
  • Too Many Mouths: The devil host marking across his forehead opens up to be Lucifero's mouth, with the devil using it to speak with Morris.
  • Villain Team-Up: Joins up with the Dark Triad after Mars forces him out of the Diamond Kingdom, with Morris helping them form the Tree of Qliphoth. Except they're no longer needed after their defeat and Morris modifies the Tree.
  • Walking Spoiler: It becomes hard to talk about Morris into detail without revealing that, nearly two hundred chapters after his cameo, he has allied himself with the Dark Triad.
  • Wham Line:
"To think that, in exchange for being born blind, I'd be blessed with abilities like this. The abilities of a devil host."
  • Wham Shot: Takes off his glasses with black markings manifesting on his face and showing his eyes of darkness, revealing that Morris is a devil host.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Willing to experiment on children, who are forced to fight each other to the death to weed them out, to make them powerful soldiers, and abandoned Fana to die when she didn't show improvement in her Flame Recovery magic.

    King of the Diamond Kingdom
The king of the Diamond Kingdom.
  • The Ghost: He is the mentioned but yet to be seen ruler of the Diamond Kingdom.
  • Immortality Immorality: The reason why he sent his country's forces to the Forest of Witches? Given that the Witch Queen had already lived for centuries while still preserving a healthy form, he hoped that his soldiers could force the secret of eternal youth out of her so that he could recover his own health and potentially attain immortality.
  • No Name Given: His name is yet to be mentioned.

Eight Shining Generals

    General
The most formidable military figures in the Diamond Kingdom, said the be a rough parallel to Clover Kingdom's Magic Squad Captains.

They are divided into two groups:

  • Blood Knight: With the (eventual) exceptions of Mars, all of them relish in the carnage of the battlefield, with no interest in peace, except a total capitulation.
  • Blow You Away: The unnamed heavyset member of the New Generation demonstrated usage of wind magic as a puppet under Vanica's control.
  • Combination Attack: Two unnamed members perform a rather large combo attack of fire and wind that actually manages to counter one of Charlotte's spells. Not that it helps in the end.
  • No Name Given: The three other New Generation Shining Generals were never given names at all.
  • Playing with Fire: The unnamed dark skinned member of the New Generation demonstrated usage of fire magic as a puppet under Vanica's control.
  • So Last Season: As far as the higher ups are considered, the only merit to the Old Generation is testing the waters before sending in the New Generation, their successors.
  • Theme Naming: All of them have names that end with "S": Mars, Ladros, Broccus, Yagos and Ragus. Then, there is Morris, who is responsible for the abilities (and psychological scars) of the New Generation.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The third New Generation general, who was shown standing in the center with Mars, Ladros and two other unnamed New Generation generals, who later end up as Vanica's puppets, when presented by Morris, seemingly disappeared without explanation.

    Mars

Mars

Voiced by: Kaito Ishikawa (Japanese, OVA), Yuichiro Umehara (Japanese, Anime), Jason Liebrecht (English)note

Debut: Chapter 13 (Manga), Episode 15 (Anime)

Magic Attribute: Mineral + Flame

"My power is… for protecting people."

A sorcerer who has been enhanced by magical experimentation on his body, and one of the Eight Shining Generals of the new generation. Entirely devoted to his mission, Mars is a juggernaut of a sorcerer, wielding both Mineral Magic and Flame Magic.

His Mineral Magic manifests as weapons, waves of diamonds, and crystal golems. His Flame Magic allows him to drape himself in purifying fire to mend his wounds.

  • Anime Hair: His hair is spiked up in all directions.
  • Arc Villain: Of the Dungeon Exploration Arc, coming into conflict with the Black Bulls and Golden Dawn over retrieving the treasures in the dungeon.
  • Bash Brothers: He becomes this with Asta after the they work together to save Fana, with the two acknowledging each other as friends and promising to help each other whenever needed.
  • BFS: Mineral Creation Magic: Laevateinn. An absolutely massive one sword made of diamond.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: It turns out that Morris brainwashed him after the training session, in which he had killed Fana, explaining his single-minded determination when fighting the heroes. After his fight with Asta, the brainwashing is broken, and Mars regains his memories of his past.
  • Brainwashing for the Greater Good: After the Forest of Witches Arc, he takes a brainwashing potion from the Witch Queen back home to the immortality seeking Diamond King, hoping to get the Diamond King to drink it. Should Mars succeed, this will not only give the Diamond King a much needed taste of his own medicine, but allow Mars to bring an end to the King's cruel despotism, and hopefully make the Diamond Kingdom a better place, like it used to be before the Diamond King took control.
  • Child Soldier: He was raised to be ruthless magic soldier from an early age.
  • Combo Platter Powers: His spell book appears to be stitched together from two different books, allowing him to use both mineral magic and flame magic. He got it after Morris mixed both his grimoire with Fana's one.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: The above alone should sell it. Chapter 18 takes it one step further by implying that he was forced to kill his own friend. Chapter 19 all but confirms it before the Diamond Kingdom ended up grafting her grimoire to his.
  • Determinator: After his beating from Asta, he quickly changes his strategy, allowing him to then curb-stomp both Golden Dawn and the Black Bulls.
  • Elemental Armor:
    • His spell Nemean Armor forms a crystal armor with greaves and gauntlets strong enough to take on Yuno's Wind Magic without trouble.
    • His Titan's Heavy Armor covers him in a giant crystal armor from the shoulder down.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: He has light purple hair that's almost white, and his innate magic attributes is mineral.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: His own friend almost immediately tried to kill him in the battle royale fight to the death that was the final test in the Jewel Kingdom's training program. She ended up being the first person he killed in the fight. This is ultimately subverted, as she attacked him on purpose with the knowledge that he would kill her and thus go free. She even lives long enough to heal his wounds before succumbing to her own.
  • Gemstone Assault: His magic and a potent one in fact, usable for many different effects.
  • Heal It With Fire: He uses his Flame Magic primarily to heal himself. Together with his mineral armor, he makes it extremely difficult for his enemies to inflict lasting damage.
  • Heel–Face Turn: During the battle in the Forest of Witches, he turns his back on the Diamond Kingdom.
  • Heroic Second Wind: Inverted, as "villainous". This guy doesn't quit. After taking a beating from Asta the first time, he manages to get back up and curb-stomp the Black Bulls and Golden Dawn. When Asta inadvertently knocks him down again with a burst of Water Magic, Mars gets back up again to shoot a crystal shard and take down Asta. He finally stays down when Yuno manages to activate the magic he learned from the scroll.
  • Instant Armor:
    • Mineral Magic: Nemean Armor, complete with a breast plate, spaulders, gauntlets, and greaves. It can withstand Yuno's wind spells without any damage.
    • Mineral Creation Magic: Titan's Heavy Armor. He covers his body in a humanoid shape with giant crystals.
  • Knight of Cerebus: The first opponent in the series to come extremely close to killing Asta and his allies.
  • Meaningful Name: He's named after the Roman god of war, and was experimented on by the Diamond Kingdom to become a powerful Super-Soldier.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Has a handsome face and is indubitably muscular both in the anime and the manga, averting the Adaptational Muscles that most male characters got subjected to in the anime. His build is showed off in his outfit.
  • My Greatest Failure: Killing Fana in Diamond Kingdom's final test haunted him perpetually and powered his resolve in the Dungeon Exploration Arc.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: He is pitted against Fana once again in the Forest of Witches Arc, and, after encouragement from Asta, he expends every effort to end the fight without killing her.
  • Mythical Motifs: Thanks to inheriting Fana's magic, he shares her association with a phoenix, using fire to heal himself.
  • Mystical White Hair: He has white-purple hair and has two magic attributes thank to experimentation by the Diamond Kingdom.
  • No-Sell: His Mineral Magic is impervious to Yuno's wind until he gains the power of the wind spirit Sylph.
  • Not So Stoic: He truly starts showing more emotion in the Forest of Witches Arc, in which he reunites with Fana, who is at first possessed.
  • Playing with Fire: Has Flame Magic from his friend Fana's Grimoire being stitched together with his own, though his only use for it seems to be healing himself.
  • Power Crystal: He has mage stones embedded in his chest and forehead from his experimentation that are meant to increase his magical power.
  • Purple Is Powerful: His hair is an almost white purple, and he's a powerful, experimented mage who presents a challenge to the heroes.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni. The blue to Ladros's red. While Ladros is cocky, very talkative and lively, Mars is normally serious, more humble and talks only when necessary. The stones in his body are also turquoise, contrasting the red ones Ladros has.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming:
    • His spells' names and powers reference Classical Mythology: the automaton Talos, the Nemean Lion, the race Titan, the weapon Harpe, and the Phoenix.
    • Interestingly, Mars's only spell that's not named from Greek Mythology is Laevateinn, forming a giant mineral sword named after the blade from Norse Mythology.
  • Self-Duplication:
    • Mineral Creation Magic: Talos Doll. The puppet can move by itself without his involvement.
    • A large-scale version, Mineral Creation Magic: Talos Doll Swarm. He doesn't have to control them, but they stop moving when he loses consciousness.
  • Ship Tease: With Fana, his childhood friend. They're very close and obviously in love with each other, with neither willing to admit it. After she's freed from being possessed, Mars promises to reunite with her and see the world together once he finishes his business in the Spade Kingdom. Vanessa even calls them out on it.
  • Shoot the Medic First: In the dungeon the first member of Golden Dawn he attacks is Mimosa, who even describes herself as the healer of the group.
  • The Stoic: Rarely shows any emotion, though he is visibly shocked when Asta manages to break apart his jewel constructs. He quickly stops being this once he sees Fana.
  • Superpower Lottery: Able to use Mineral Magic, which is incredibly potent in both offense and defense. He can use it to create weapons, armor, and even clones of himself. It's tough enough to withstand Yuno's Wind Magic without a scratch and was able to one-shot Mimosa. The only thing capable of shattering his defenses so far is Asta's sword. It's later revealed that he also has Flame Recovery Magic, the latter of which is implied to have come from Fana, who died in the death battles he was forced to partake in. He then shows that he can launch crystal projectiles fast enough to overwhelm Asta.
  • Super-Soldier: Being implanted with materials to boost his magical power, makes him this. The children subjected to this were forced to fight each other to the death, in order to produce the strongest sorcerers possible.
  • Taking the Bullet: Once Ladros releases the fireball he's absorbed, Mars protects Fana with his enchanted body.
  • Tears of Joy: Cries once Fana returns to normal.
  • Tin Man: He's ultimately this. He honestly tried to kill his emotions, but his memories of Fana as well as Asta's words make him this. This is lampshaded by Lotus:
Mars: Lotus... thanks for saving me.
Lotus: What's this I'm hearing? You actually do know... how to say thanks.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: The first real threat to the Black Bulls seen in the series. He is the first antagonist in the series who managed to down the protagonist and the prodigal rival twice in the same arc while going 1 vs. 6 with relative ease after he gets serious. He also critically injures Noelle and Asta during the course of the fight, slicing them open with blood splatter everywhere.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Mars is fully willing to beat down anyone who stands between him and the local dungeon's treasure, as Mimosa and Noelle can testify.
  • Younger Than They Look: Despite looking much older thanks to his stoic expression and looks, he's only 19 years old.

Magic Attribute: Red Clay

One of the Eight Shining Generals, and of the old generation. He never backs down before a challenge.

He wields Red Clay Magic to encase himself within an armor of ochre and ram through every obstacle.

  • Afro Asskicker: He has an afro and is one of the strongest warriors of the Diamond Kingdom.
  • Animal Motifs: Boars, riding one made of Red Clay and using it for offense, in addition to fitting his brute force approach to combat.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Instead of retreating, he decides to take on Vangeance himself.
  • Blood Knight: He relishes the chance to attack the Clover Kingdom and take on its Magic Knights.
  • The Brute: Is the burliest of his comrades and the most bloodthirsty as well.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Is easily beaten by Vangeance. This is justified as he is of the old generation of the generals.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: He uses Red Clay Magic to create an armor and rampaging boar.
  • Elemental Armor: He can use his magic to encase himself in a large armor of red clay.
  • A Father to His Men: He gets incredibly angry that Vangeance's magic knocks out his men, and vows to make him pay for that.

    Yagos

Yagos

Voiced by: Genki Muro (Japanese), Bruce DuBose (English)

Debut: Chapter 74 (Manga), Episode 51 (Anime)

Magic Attribute: Slime

One of the Eight Shining Generals, and of the old generation.

He manipulates some extremely sticky Slime Magic that manifests as a giant snail, and saps its victims' life force.

  • An Arm and a Leg: He loses his right arm to Langris's Spatial Magic.
  • Animal Motifs: His Slime Magic takes the form of a snail, reflecting that despite his sadism he is ultimately a vulnerable Squishy Wizard beneath a thin shell.
  • Blob Monster: Can create these with his Slime Magic.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: His Slime Magic slowly weakens its victims.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Still gets beaten really easily, though he makes the best showing out of the three generals of the old generation, as he uses citizens as a way to prevent the Magic Knights from hitting him.
  • Evil Laugh: Quickly stops once Langris interferes, however.
  • Sadist: Enjoys watching the victims of his Slime Magic suffer.
  • Warhawk: Likes the idea of the Clover and Diamond Kingdoms being at war.

    Ladros

Ladros

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ladros_3.png

Voiced by: Takeshi Kusao (Japanese), Chris Gardner (English)

Debut: Chapter 79 (Manga), Episode 53 (Anime)

Magic Attribute: None

A mage who is one of the kingdom's Eight Shining Generals, and is of the new generation. Like Mars, Ladros comes from the Diamond Kingdom's laboratories.

His unnatural power allows him to absorb and gulp down mana, before releasing it as a barrage of lasers.

  • Agent Peacock: Is quite flamboyant and loves to talk, but is a surprisingly crafty and ruthless combatant who is an expert at taking advantage of his unique abilities and tricking opponents into helping him power up.
  • Beam Spam: His Signature Move, "MIIIIIRIOOON LAISAAAAAAAA".
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: Has black eyes along with red irises, but strangely enough, his pupils aren't visible. His eyes were completely normal when he was a child.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He was born without an elemental affinity, though he had a larger pool of mana to compensate for that, and so he was treated as lesser.
  • Determinator: Even after being hit by one of Fana's fireballs with Asta's help, and even after getting stabbed by Asta's anti-magic sword, he still manages to put up a decent fight.
  • Didn't See That Coming: He actually has a decent strategy to deal with Asta, that being to bombard him with multiple blasts while in the air so that Asta can't hit him and absorbing/recycling any deflected blasts to reuse the mana for more attacks, all while taking out anyone who could help Asta close the distance physically, with the intent of defeating him through sheer attrition. A shame he didn't consider that Throwing Your Sword Always Works.
  • Driven by Envy: He wants to be recognized by the kingdom, but he detests Mars for his superior magic abilities and gladly tries to kill him once Mars becomes a traitor.
  • Energy Absorption: Has this ability after being experimented upon by the Diamond Kingdom.
  • Evil Laugh: Does this a lot, but stops once he realizes that Asta has thrown one of his anti-magic swords at him, which causes his magic power to be sucked out.
  • Get It Over With: Once defeated, he begs Asta to kill him, having realized that he is nowhere as powerful as he thought he was. To his surprise, Asta refuses, telling him that he must pay for what he's done.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Goes back to the Diamond Kingdom so that he may help Mars change the kingdom.
  • Large Ham: Especially in the English dub, thanks to Chris Gardner's stellar performance.
  • Laughably Evil: He's so hammy, bombastic, and over-the-top that it's hard not to crack a smile whenever he's onscreen.
  • Mythical Motifs: Gains a dragon one after absorbing Salamander, even getting an attack to mimic its form.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Once he recognizes Asta as the knight without any magical powers, Ladros claims that he understands Asta's pain, since he was treated likewise in his childhood, and offers to let Asta join the Diamond army and help him get rid of those who step on others for want of natural talent. Of course, it's all a ruse for him to get his anti-magic powers, and it doesn't work.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Mars's blue. While Mars is normally serious, more humble and talks only when necessary, Ladros is cocky, very talkative and lively. The stones in his body are also red, contrasting the turquoise ones Mars has.
  • Sissy Villain: He has quite the flamboyant personality and speaks in a rather effeminate voice. His introduction has him complaining about being called out for a mission during his aromatherapy soak.
  • Slasher Smile: Combined with his eyes, it looks incredibly unsettling.
  • Smug Super: Is pretty arrogant in the beginning, thanks to his absorption power, but his ego grows tremendously once he absorbs Salamander.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: He does wear an upper garment, but his chest is always exposed.

Lotus of the Abyss

Voiced by: Kenyū Horiuchi (Japanese), Brad Hawkins (English)note

Debut: Chapter 12 (Manga), Episode 15 (Anime)

Magic Attribute: Smoke

A sorcerer known as the "Lotus of the Abyss". He's a veteran of the Clover-Diamond War, having fought Yami on the front lines.

He uses Smoke Magic to camouflage himself and sap his targets' strength, never confronting his opponents directly.

  • Action Dad: He has three daughters, who are one of the reasons he's serving as a soldier for the Diamond Kingdom to protect his country.
  • Affably Evil: He's laid back, polite and casual regardless of the situation, never resorting to insulting and belittling others barring some mild sarcasm.
  • Anti-Villain: Antagonistic, but not evil at all if his words are to believed. The only reason why he's fighting the protagonists is that he's just doing his job as a soldier: trying to preserve the livelihood of his people by raiding the Clover Kingdom due to the Diamond Kingdom's dire straits. Heck, he even apologizes for all of the fights he's responsible for.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Gets the lower part of his right arm cut off by Morris after betraying him.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: It turns out that he was hanging by Mars and Asta's fight the whole time and pocketing all of the treasure during the confusion. The heroes might have won the battle, but he got the spoils in the end.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: He's a highly skilled mage but dislikes fighting as it drains his magical power, and would rather flee whenever possible. When he gets serious, however...
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Lotus is quite the quirky fellow with a personality that's simultaneously cool and collected and incredibly lazy and easygoing, and has the most comedic moments out of his fellow Diamond mages. In any given fight, he's the guy most likely to run away. Yet he's unbelievably dangerous, with even Wizard King Julius Novachrono being wary of him.
  • The Bus Came Back: He returns in Chapter 273, being with Morris, who is working with the Dark Triad, in the Spade Kingdom.
  • Carpet of Virility: He is a military man in his mid-thirties, with his slightly open shirt showing his hairy chest.
  • Combat Pragmatist:
    • Knows he doesn't have any chance of taking on Asta, Noelle, and Luck in a fair fight, so he instead traps them in a wall of smoke that even Asta's sword can't penetrate to slowly suffocate them to death. Prior to this, he also slowly poisons Luck carbon monoxide-style to throw off his balance. He also doesn't mind letting his underlings take the hit to stall in order to allow his magic to take full effect.
    • During the Kiten Invasion, he almost successfully carries out a sneak attack against William Vangeance.
  • Deadly Gas: He uses Smoke Magic, releasing poisonous gas that can suffocate enemies.
  • Family-Values Villain: He fights the Black Bulls and Golden Dawn on behalf of his country, but is a devoted father to his daughters who served as a soldier partly for their sakes. The world of devils Morris is trying to create gets Lotus to betray him, not wanting his family to die.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: He can be fairly audacious, ambushing Captain Vengeance while he was occupied with another Diamond Kingdom mage, only to hightail it once Yami shows up.
  • Papa Wolf: Not wanting his family to die in the world Morris wants to create gets Lotus to betray him, vowing to return to his family alive.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: He's only fighting to protect his kingdom, especially his three daughters back at home, and is actually rather polite in his dealings with the Black Bulls. He even compliments them and makes remarks about the value of teamwork, though his definition stretches that point a bit. He also laments the fact that he must fight and potentially kill some talented youngsters. He even goes back to save Mars from the collapsing dungeon and makes sure that all of his men got out alive.
  • Sensor Character: As a mage who uses an attribute derived from wind, Lotus is good at detecting mana. He uses it to locate enemies while surrounded by his thick smoke, seeing them as lights.
  • Stroke the Beard: He often caresses his goatee.
  • Villainous Rescue: He comes out of nowhere to steal the treasure and save Mars from the collapsing dungeon. Though apparently, he was invisible the whole time.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Knows that the folks over at Clover aren't evil people per se so he attempts to talk his way out of fighting with Luck by citing the problems his own kingdom has and apologizing for the war. Unfortunately, Luck is a complete Blood Knight and couldn't care less.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: A small scale version. Lotus manages to manipulate things to be in his favor, no matter what happens. His mooks got beaten? Don't worry, that just gave him more time for his magic to work. He gets beaten? Not a problem, Mars will clean them up. Mars gets beaten? He'll wait until they open the treasure room, then pocket the loot during the fight.

Debut: Chapter 51 (Manga), Episode 35 (Anime)*

Magic Attribute: Flame + Mineral

"We were born to protect the people of this country we love!"

A woman of the Diamond Kingdom who's possessed by a dead elf of the same name. As a childhood friend of Mars, she endured the same treatments and experiments. She's the master of the spirit of fire, Salamander, which possesses absurd destructive power.

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Licht made her possessed, so she was consumed with hatred for the Clover Kingdom from her elf soul.
  • Child Soldier: She was raised to be one from an early age.
  • Childhood Friends: Was one with Mars.
  • Combo Platter Powers: Just like what happened with Mars, Morris stitched together her grimoire with Mars's one, allowing her to use both her natural Flame Magic and Mars's Mineral Magic.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She and Mars were subjected to experiments by the Diamond Kingdom so that they might become efficient child soldiers, and in the trial in which every participant was to kill the others, she attacked Mars on purpose, who then attacked her back, and she did it only so that he might live and explore the world for her. But that isn't the end for her; she was later revived because of her Phoenix Magic, and the sage Morris decided to experiment on her some more. However, when her magical power didn't grow, he threw her away, and she was then taken in by Licht.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Her eyes lack shines unlike most characters. This is due to elf Fana possessing her. She only has them back when she is back in control.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Fana appears in a flashback in Chapter 17 prior to her making her first physical appearance in Chapter 51.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: Underneath the purple gem on her forehead is a third eye. It disappears once she turns back to normal, no longer under control of elf Fana.
  • Forced into Evil: She is Mars's childhood friend whom he presumed died as part of the Diamond Kingdom's brutal "training program," but the cruel sage Morris took her near lifeless body and experimented on her until he abandoned her. Only once Licht took her in did she become the vessel of a dead elf, who's also named Fana, working for the Eye of the Midnight Sun. She is finally saved after the combined efforts of Mars and Asta manage to exorcise the elf Fana from her body.
  • Gemstone Assault: After surviving her apparent death in the trial where every participant had to kill each other until only one lasted, Morris got interested in her Flame Recovery Magic, experimenting on her body and mixing her grimoire with the one of Mars, giving her the ability to use some of Mars crystal-based spells. So far, she only has shown them under the possession of the elf Fana.
  • Heal It With Fire: Possesses the Flame Recovery Magic spell Phoenix Feathers Robe, that creates flames able to heal herself and others.
  • Heal Thyself: Her Phoenix Feathers Robe produces flames that are able to heal herself as they "burn" her body.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Combines her natural blue eyes with Dull Eyes of Unhappiness, creating an unnerving effect. They upgrade to Red Eyes, Take Warning once the elf possessing her body unleashes her full power.
  • Identical Stranger: According to Patry, she looks exactly like the elf whose soul she has. They also have the same name.
  • The Lost Lenore: Is this to Mars at first, as she was his love interest during his childhood and her apparent death at his own hands was what made Mars the cold and ruthless enemy he was in his introduction. This is eventually subverted when it turns out she survived and becomes a major antagonist later in the series.
  • Nice Girl: During Mars's flashback in the Dungeon Exploration Arc, she's portrayed as kind, cheerful and friendly, even willing to feign betraying Mars in the final selection to force him to kill her so he could fulfill their dream of seeing the outside world. This is averted in her reappearance, where she appears as a hateful individual who only has thoughts of burning her enemies to death. She thankfully returns to her normal, kind self once the elf Fana is exorcised from her body.
  • Not Quite Dead: Though Mars's flashback in the Dungeon Exploration Arc showed him apparently killing her in self-defense, she later appears as an elite member of the Eye of the Midnight Sun, being perfectly fine but showing an erratic and warped personality. It turns out that thanks to her Recovery Magic, she was able to survive Mars's attack, only to be experimented by Morris and later being possessed by the elf Fana thanks to Patry's Reincarnation Magic after Morris discarded her body.
  • Personality Powers: Though her magic attribute is Flame, her spells are mostly used to heal people, instead of causing destruction as it is usually portrayed, representing her kind and helpful demeanor towards those she loves. Interestingly, this can also apply to her ownership over Salamander, representing the utter rage and contempt the elf possessing her body felt during her death. Coincidence or not, she loses Salamander not long after returning to her former self.
  • Playing with Fire: Her natural magic attribute is Flame, though it has a more healing oriented use than other examples. As a member of the Third Eye, like Yuno, she uses one of the four elemental avatars, with hers being the flame spirit Salamander.
  • Pointy Ears: She has them, just like Licht and Vetto. This is due to her being possessed by an elf. They disappear once she regains control.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Was this during her childhood before elf Fana was forcefully introduced in her body by Patry and warped her personality to one with only hate and revenge in mind. She returns to being one once the elf Fana leaves her body.
  • Self-Sacrifice Scheme: Knowing that Mars was more likely to survive, she attacked him with the intention to provoke him into killing her in self-defense, so that he could accomplish their dream to see the world beyond the training facility where they were being experimented and trained. She, however, managed to survive due to her phoenix-like Flame Magic.
  • Sharing a Body: After Patry cast his Reincarnation Magic spell on her unconscious self after Morris abandoned her, she shared her body with an elf with similar appearance, voice, name and magic to her for a while, until she was finally freed in the Forest of Witches.
  • Ship Tease: With Mars, her childhood friend. They're very close and obviously in love with each other, with neither willing to admit it. After she's freed from being possessed, Mars promises to reunite with her and see the world together once he finishes his business in the Spade Kingdom. Vanessa even calls them out on it.
  • Super-Soldier: Being implanted with materials to boost her magical power, makes her this. The children subjected to this were forced to fight each other to the death, in order to produce the strongest sorcerers possible.
