Spade Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/spade_kingdom_insignia.png

A kingdom west of the Clover Kingdom. Once a peaceful northern kingdom ruled by the beloved house of Grinberryall, the Dark Triad overthrown them in a coup and ruled over it with an iron fist. The Spade Kingdom have since been a country that serves an ancient evil and is invading neighboring countries six months after the elf rampage of Clover Kingdom.

    In General
  • Ancient Evil: Since long ago, the House of Grinberryall has been guarding two ancient demons who were once phenomenally strong young royals whose hatred for each other turned them into demons. The Dark Triad unleashes one on the Spade Kingdom Resistance which fights Mereoleona, while the other is sent to attack the Clover Kingdom, unable to be stopped by the Magic Knights, Julius, and Damnatio with Asta appearing to save the kingdom.
  • Base on Wheels: The Spade Kingdom has giant mobile fortresses built to cross Strong Magic Regions, one of which is named Candelo, that runs off exhausting Low Stagers of their mana.
  • The Coup: The Spade Kingdom underwent this in the past, with the peaceful House of Grinberryall overthrown and killed by the Dark Triad.
  • Deal with the Devil: Thanks to the Dark Triad, they've made these to increase their military power, with the Dark Triad and Dark Disciples, the strongest of their forces, comprised of devil power users.
  • Fantastic Racism: The country's military in general has a very low opinion of Low Stages and sees those with low mana as expendable. They mistreat their Low Stagers and have them used as mana fuel for their fortresses.
  • Grim Up North: The Spade Kingdom is shown to be the northernmost country in the continent on the map. Its army favors thick, furred clothing, the country is the largest of the kingdoms with lots of cold and fog, houses an ancient evil, and is ruled by the Dark Triad, a trio of cruel tyrants. It isn't like this until 15 years ago, though.
  • Human Resources: The Spade Kingdom uses Lower Stage citizens as a Living Battery to power their fortresses.
  • Military Mage: They have dedicated armies comprised of devil users to invade the Clover, Diamond, and Heart Kingdoms.
  • Theme Naming: With the Clover, Diamond, and Heart Kingdoms, they are named after the four French suits of playing cards.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: The beloved House of Grinberryall was overthrown by the Dark Triad, who mistreat their subjects and are leading groups of devils hosts to invade neighboring countries.
  • Wrong Context Magic:
    • A whole kingdom of this, with their military power reliant on the use of devils.
    • The Dark Triad also tries to forcibly recruit Arcane Stages, mages whose powers defy standard conventions, to prevent these mages from being potential problems in the future.

The Dark Triad

    In General

L - R: Zenon, Dante, and Vanica

"Scum who hurt others without a second thought for the sake of their own desires. Who feel no sense of guilt as long as they themselves benefit."
Nacht

A trio of powerful devil hosts who rule over the Spade Kingdom.

  • 0% Approval Rating: For their lower class citizens at least, who are used as living mana fuel for the kingdom's fortresses and mistreated by the military.
  • Arch-Enemy: All three were set up as this for the main trio:
    • Dante was built up as this for Asta after endangering his squad to the point that Asta becomes even more demonic in his Black Form out of rage. Not to mention that his biological mother's death is connected to Lucifero, Dante's devil, and Dante desires to fight Asta again... which ends up never happening; Magna beats him down before Asta ever arrives for a rematch, and Jack appears to finish him off. So much for that.
    • Vanica's was Noelle's due to her devil Megicula cursing her mother Acier to death, and then taking Lolopechka hostage instead of killing her in hopes that Noelle gets even stronger for Vanica to have a powerful opponent when they fight again. And Vanica gets exactly what she wished for when Noelle easily defeats her with her new Saint Stage form. Then it turns out Vanica was just the warm-up to Noelle's real nemesis — Megicula herself.
    • Zenon's was Yuno's due to not only taking part in killing Yuno's parents, the former rulers of the Spade Kingdom, but also capturing Vangeance and killing half of the Golden Dawn. When Yuno fights him again, he tells Zenon that he'll die having regretted touching the Golden Dawn.
  • Artifact Title: There are four members of the Dark Triad, with the fourth one being the Wizard King of Clover Kingdom all along.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: The rulers of the Spade Kingdom who attained their positions by overthrowing the previous regime and massacring the royal family, and are incredibly powerful mages with devil-reinforced magic to boot. Their eldest sibling in particular, was hidden in the Clover Kingdom and within the Wizard King's body with the magical prowess and devil host capability to back the guise up.
  • Badass Family: The Dark Triad are all siblings of the Zogratis family, and incredibly powerful mages who are the hosts of high-ranking devils. It's later revealed that there's an eldest brother, Lucius Zogratis, who is a better devil host than Dante and Vanica. Unlike most applicants of this trope in the series however, the Zogratis Siblings are heavily implied to be of peasant lineage instead of royalty.
  • Badass Longcoat: They each wear furred longcoats and are some of the most powerful mages in the story.
  • Bad Powers, Bad People: They're the willing hosts of devils, empowering them with the power of evil demons from the underworld. Their goal is to form the Tree of Qliphoth to let devils overrun the world, which would kill 90% of the continent's population.
  • Biblical Motifs: The Qliphoth. Their goal is to create the Tree of Qliphoth to bring devils into the living world. The Qliphoth is the arrangement of evil forces in the Kabbalah and the opposite of the Sephirot, which is associated heavily with the elf tribe, the previous antagonists of the story.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate:
    • After the elves, the trio become the main villains of the story, with their goal to bring devils into the world and trying to capture Yami and Vangeance to do so.
    • The Dark Triad turns out to have formed this with Morris after he was forced out of the Diamond Kingdom by Mars, with Morris healing and strengthening Dante as well as having designed the mobile fortresses to harvest the magic power needed to form the Tree of Qliphoth.
  • Bloodier and Gorier: The story takes a more violent turn whenever the Dark Triad shows up.
  • Body Motifs: All their innate magics are based on a body aspect, with Dante, Vanica, and Zenon wielding Body, Blood, and Bone magic respectively.
  • Cain and Abel and Seth: Zenon's backstory reveals that there is actually a fourth Zogratis sibling, the oldest of the siblings who, like Zenon, has a greater aptitude as a devil host than Dante and Vanica.
  • Combo Platter Powers: The members of the Dark Triad can use two magic attributes thanks to being hosts of high-ranking devils:
  • Dark Is Evil: They're known as the Dark Triad, wear black clothing, use the powers of devils, and are the amoral rulers of the Spade Kingdom, with their goal to bring devils, beings of evil and destruction, into the living world which would kill over 90% of the continent's population.
  • Deal with the Devil: They are the willing hosts of the highest-ranked devils in the underworld.
  • Demonic Possession: The Dark Triad are each the willing hosts of powerful, high-ranking devils. As a result, they can speak with their devils and use their magics.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: The Zogratis siblings all have black hair and pale skin, and they're the amoral hosts of powerful devils.
  • Embodiment of Vice: They each represent one of the malevolent personality traits in the Dark Triad of psychology:
    • Dante is Narcissism. His volume profile states that one of his favorite things is himself. He thinks that he's entitled to women who interest him and has great confidence in his power, considering himself undefeatable thanks to his Body Magic. He gets enraged at Asta just for putting a small cut on his face when they fight.
    • Vanica is Psychopathy. Her volume profile states that her favorite thing is bloody battles. She has no qualms letting her loyal Dark Disciples die, and her love for fighting has her order her underlings to slaughter Heart Kingdom citizens to motivate her opponent, and be childishly gleeful when fighting someone strong. She also shows a lack of foresight, keeping Noelle alive and abducting Lolopechka instead of killing her to goad Noelle into becoming stronger just for her to have an enjoyable fight.
    • Zenon is Machiavellianism. His volume profile states that his favorite thing is nothing. He's very stoic, rarely speaking, and incredibly merciless, killing countless Golden Dawn members when he attacks their headquarters. Zenon is also brutally efficient, trying to kill anyone who may pose a future threat as quickly as possible, and his actions are all for the benefit of the Spade Kingdom.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: If there is one redeeming quality that they all share, it's that they genuinely care for each other.
  • Evil Counterpart: They each serve as one to the main trio. Notably, they're also mentored by Lucius Zogratis, either personally or indirectly via his split soul Julius:
    • Dante to Asta. Both are devil hosts whose fighting styles rely on physical power and wielding swords. They also believe in the power of malicious emotions. But while Asta thinks being human is having the heart to control them to do what's right, Dante espouses that being evil in of itself is being human.
    • Vanica to Noelle. The two both use liquid magic attributes, can be dismissive of others, and are prone to rapidly changing their moods. Although Noelle cares for her comrades and defends the weak, Vanica doesn't care at all about her loyal Dark Disciples and is only interested in fighting strong foes.
    • Zenon to Yuno. They are both cold, speak little, and have confidence in their power, preferring to settle things fast with their magic. While Yuno is selfless and cares for his squad, Zenon is a merciless and brutal Social Darwinist.
  • Evil Plan: Theirs is to capture Vangeance and Yami and use their magics to form the Tree of Qliphoth to let devils overrun the living world, with each sibling desiring varying things out from the massacre. Dante wants to use the devils to create a world of pure malice, while Vanica wants to battle against the remaining 10% of survivors. However, the original sibling who came up with the idea, Lucius Zogratis, wants to use this to temporarily kill humanity and remake them in undying bodies, something that Zenon followed so there will be a peaceful Spade Kingdom without the fear of death, although for Lucius, the ritual itself is just the means to an end, and the actual massacre he planned is something else.
  • Evil Wears Black: They wear black and are a lot of malicious devil users.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: They used to be merely no-names living in a place distant from the Spade Kingdom's castle. Now they are hosts of supreme devils and the reviled tyrants of Spade Kingdom.
  • Freudian Trio: Vanica is the Id, being an impulsive, psychotic fighter who loves fighting strong opponents. Dante is the Ego, an arrogant man who believes malice is the essence of human nature. Zenon is the Superego, a quiet, merciless man fervently loyal to the Spade Kingdom.
  • Fur and Loathing: They all wear fur, likely due to the cold weather of the Spade Kingdom.
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: They gain wings of the demonic variety at higher percentages of their devils' power:
    • Dante gains two black, bat-like wings.
    • Vanica has a left wing made of her Blood Magic and the other a dark one at 50%.
    • Zenon gets one dark wing and a wing made of his Bone Magic.
  • Hated by All: The Dark Triad are collectively the most vile, disturbing and dangerous characters in the entire manga, and absolutely nobody In-Universe has anything positive to say about them. They're completely unrepentant of their actions and, as stated by Nacht, unforgivable. Even Zenon, arguably the only member with any sort of sympathetic backstory or intent bar Lucius, was considered by Yuno to be just as vile as the other two.
  • Hate Sink: Dante and Vanica are so heinous that their Fates Worse Than Death comes across as cathartic. Their mindset isn't any better because it just hinges on For the Evulz. Zenon and Lucius subvert this for their Well-Intentioned Extremist goals and Zenon had a tragic backstory.
  • Hell on Earth: The Dark Triad's goal is to create the Tree of Qliphoth, allowing devils to enter the living world and killing over 90% of the continent's population.
  • Horned Humanoid: As they use more of their devils' power, they gain wegs on their head:
    • Dante grows two dark curved horns.
    • Vanica has two goat-like horns, one made of her Blood Magic.
    • Zenon gains light and dark long, thin horns, with one being boney.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Rather amusingly, all of them have suffered this at least at one point.
    • Dante has it the worst, in that his torso is effectively deleted by Yami's Death Thrust, leaving him as a floating head and limbs shocked by what just happened before his Body Magic kicks into overdrive.
    • Vanica gets impaled twice through the chest by Noelle's Valkyrie water lance in their first battle. The first time she seems more excited than anything, while the second time she's more surprised Noelle had the strength to manage that despite being badly injured and all but defeated.
    • Zenon gets impaled in the chest by Yuno's Spirit of Boreas in their rematch to drive home how not even 55% of his power is enough to handle Yuno's newest transformation, which actually shocks him enough to unleash more of his power.
  • Invincible Villain: Beyond their sheer evil, the Dark Triad are such large threats because of how insanely powerful they are, boasting utterly insane Mana thanks to being tied to powerful Devils and being able to easily increase their own power whenever it seems they might be struggling. Despite going all out, Yuno is only able to get Zenon to 55% before being utterly destroyed, while Vanica, despite being led into a corner, easily disposes of both Noelle and Secre without any issues once Megicula takes over the fight. Surprisingly, their leader Dante Averts this because his opponent, Yami was just as strong. This changes after the Magic Knights do some training, and both Dante and Vanica are easily defeated thanks to the main characters' new spells.
  • It's Personal: Save for being continental threats, they and/or their devils are also threats of a personal level especially regarding to Asta, Liebe, Yuno, Noelle and Nozel.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Their introduction as the new main villains change the story to a much darker tone, with Zenon and his Dark Disciples killing half of Golden Dawn and leaving Yuno near-dead. Even when the heroes try to fight back, their sheer sadism, cruelty and misanthropic world views make the battles much more grisly.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: They have absolutely zero idea about what the Qliphoth Tree Ritual is actually for and were just desiring their own things from it. Dante wants to create a world of malice, Vanica wants to battle the survivors from the purge and Zenon wants to create a peaceful Spade Kingdom. Turns out the whole thing wasn't even intended to wipe out the global population, it was just a front for Lucius to draw out and kill Lucifero to usurp his power so he could start a holy war that will wipe out the global population and his magic will be strong enough to recreate the causalities as immortal, angelic superhumans.
  • Lovecraftian Superpower: They have this theme. Each of the Dark Triad has an unsettling magic related to the body. The eldest sibling uses Soul Magic to manipulate and transform other human beings, Dante uses Body Magic to grotesquely regenerate his flesh to heal himself, Zenon uses Bone Magic that grows sharpened bones out of his body, and Vanica uses Blood Magic to congeal into different forms. Notably, these are not the magics their union with devils gave them but rather their own natural ones.
  • Mark of the Beast: They each have black markings on their body that denote their status as devil hosts, and the deeper they tap into their demonic power the more the marks grow and otherwise deform their bodies.
  • Mythical Motifs: Devils, with all of them serving as Devil Hosts, and gaining horns, Scary Teeth and demonic wings as they tap into more of their devils power.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Their plan to form the Tree of Qliphoth would have devils come into the living world, killing over 90% of the continent's population in the process. The members of the Dark Triad embrace it, with Dante looking forward to a world brimming with malice and Vanica stating that she wants to fight those strong enough to survive. The eldest sibling averts this in that the whole ritual is just Stage 1 and is ultimately an orchestrated coup against Lucifero. The next stage involves the actual slaughter in the form of a self-proclaimed holy war, then remaking all the fallen casualties into angelic immortals with undying bodies and devoid of the fear of death, so it's actually the means rather than the ends for him. Zenon largely has the same idea, but he doesn't get the big picture.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Expending more of their devils' power gives them demonic wings.
  • Power Limiter: As Devil Hosts, they limit their power to make the fight more fair for them but can also increase their power to give their enemies a Curb-Stomp Battle.
  • Powers via Possession: They are each the hosts of high-ranking devils, and gain their devils' magic on top of their innate magics: Gravity Magic for Dante, Spatial Magic for Zenon, and Curse-Warding Magic for Vanica. Their devils also enhance the power of their innate magic, with Dante's Body Magic boosted to the point he can instantaneously regenerate from would-be fatal wounds.
  • Shared Family Quirks: A darker example. The Dark Triad are all siblings, and each of them are the hosts of high-ranking devils, have a callous disregard for human life, enjoyment for brutalizing enemies, and magic attributes related to the human body: bone, body and blood. With The Reveal that their eldest brother has soul magic, these magic attributes actually correspond to the key components of a person (soul, body, blood and bone), fitting for Lucius's final goal of destroying and remaking humanity by using the devils of the underworld.
  • Sibling Team: The Dark Triad are all siblings, and together they overthrew the House of Grinberryall and invade the Clover and Heart Kingdoms.
  • Terrible Trio: Overall, they're a trio of insane, unrepentant and bloodthirsty maniacs who commit atrocities because they could.
  • Uncertain Doom: Their fates post-Spade Kingdom at least for Dante and Vanica, given Zenon was explicitly killed in his fight with Yuno, though that didn't stop Lucius from recovering his body too in order to access his magic for his plan. Dante was last seen being struck down by Jack after his body horribly mutated from trying to heal from the damage he took against Magna, but the nature of his Body Magic and the cut-away from the final blow makes it unclear if Jack actually killed him or just finally incapacitated him. Vanica meanwhile was beaten to a pulp by Noelle, ended up being further harmed by Megicula's forceful emergence and puppeteering her body in the Devil's plot to finally manifest through sacrificing her soul, and then was left for dead after Megicula's death, but she was still explicitly alive at that point given her actual death would have simply allowed Megicula to draw on more power, which Noelle and her fellow fighters couldn't afford, though that still opens the possibility she expired before Lucius collected her.
  • Unwitting Pawn:
    • In reality, they are all just tools for their oldest brother Lucius to gain access to both Lucifero's heart and their magic. The Qliphoth Tree Ritual was not the final stage of Lucius's plan, it was just a mean for him to stage a coup against Lucifero, and he actually orchestrated something way grander in scope against humanity.
    • It's implied that Lucius was already planning to get them killed and their magic harvested so he could combine them with his magic to grant himself the power to outright manipulate life and resurrect dead people. He just does so in a way where they are free to do whatever they want without them suspecting a single thing.
  • Villain Team-Up: The Dark Triad joined up with Morris after Mars forced him out of the Diamond Kingdom, with Morris helping them form the Tree of Qliphoth.
  • Villainous Lineage: The Dark Triad are siblings, and a group of malicious, unrepentant individuals whose plan would lead to the end of the world. Flashbacks reveal that there was a fourth, oldest Zogratis brother, Lucius Zogratis, who wanted them to become devil hosts.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Their goal is actually to temporarily destroy humanity and regenerate them into undying bodies using their magic and the power of devils, creating a peaceful Spade Kingdom where people do not fear death. This led them to overthrow the Spade royal family and invade the other kingdoms all to form the Tree of Qliphoth, which would unleash devils onto the world and kill 90% of the continent as part of the plan. However, only Zenon and Lucius genuinely believe in what they were doing; Vanica and Dante simply wanted it for the sake of amusement.

The Oldest Zogratis Sibling (MAJOR SPOILERS

Lucius Zogratis a.k.a Julius Novachrono

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lucius_zogratis_332.png

Magic Attribute: Soul + Time

"By rights, no living thing should ever be born without magic power. You [Asta] are the world's 'flaw.' For the sake of a just future... flaws must be eliminated."

A mage born with two souls with the other being the Wizard King Julius Novachrono. He is the eldest sibling of the Dark Triad, and devil host of the supreme devil Astaroth. A megalomaniac with a messiah complex, Lucius believes himself to be the world's savior and infiltrated the Clover Kingdom as an unaware Julius. His goal is to use the power of devils to remake humanity into equal, higher life-forms to establish peace and rule over the world as the Wizard Emperor.

Lucius uses two types of magic, the devil Astaroth's Time Magic and his innate magic Soul Magic, transforming the soul, the source of human life, spirit, and magic, of anyone he touches.

    Dante Zogratis

Dante Zogratis

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dante_zogratis.png

Voiced by: Rikiya Koyama (Japanese) Patrick Seitz (English)

Debut: Chapter 231 (Manga), Episode 156 (Anime)

Magic Attribute: Body + Gravity

"Humans are evil incarnate. Rage, fear, hate, revenge, destruction... Evil is humanity's true nature. As such, this world is too dull for us."

One of the rulers of the Spade Kingdom and leader of the Dark Triad. He is the older brother of Vanica and Zenon, and devil host of the supreme devil Lucifero. Dante has a malicious, confident personality. He revels in harming others and follows the philosophy that malice is humanity's true nature.

He uses two types of magic, the devil Lucifero's Gravity Magic and his innate Body Magic, whose regeneration has been enhanced by the power of his devil to self-heal from even the worst of injuries.

  • Abhorrent Admirer:
    • He becomes this to Vanessa, thinking she's a good fit for him because of her beauty, figure, and magic over fate. She's appalled to say the least.
    • He becomes this to Grey as well when she shows herself to be another Arcane Stage. Like Vanessa, Grey looks horrified.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In the anime he first appears in Episode 156, which is focused on the Magic Knights training in the Heart Kingdom. Dante doesn't appear in the manga until Chapter 231, adapted as Episode 158, which formally introduces the Dark Triad.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Gets his arm cut off while fighting Asta and Yami. Thanks to his Body Magic, it doesn't phase him at all.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: He can use his Body Magic to turn into a giant, musclebound being with enough physical strength to obliterate the ground with a punch and send the resulting countless debris flying with an arm swing.
  • Badass Cape: Dante wears a dark blue fur cape with a short white fur mantle.
  • Badass Fingersnap: Dante is able to use his Gravity Magic with a simple fingersnap, sending a stone claymore he formed out of compressing a boulder flying behind himself to impale Gauche.
  • Baddie Flattery: Believing evil to be an important part of humanity, he compliments the enraged Asta and Yami on their malice.
  • Bad Powers, Bad People: His innate magic lets him regenerate his flesh, which Yami describes as gross, and he's a malicious, unpleasant devil host.
  • Baritone of Strength: Dante has a fairly deep voice in the anime and is one of the most powerful mages in the story as a member of the Dark Triad.
  • Beard of Evil: Has noticeable facial hair and is just as evil as his siblings.
  • BFS: His spell Evil God's Pressure Craft has him use gravity to compress a large rock into a giant sword.
  • Big Bad: Subverted. He appears to be the main antagonist of the second saga, as the overall leader of the Dark Triad, the strongest of the three, the one who is paired off against Asta himself in his first fight and the host of the most powerful devil. Then he gets beaten down by the Black Bull's weakest member and seemingly killed in his second appearance. Later, it turns out he was never the strongest devil host at all — he may have had the strongest devil, but his older and little brothers are much more compatible as hosts.
  • Big Brother Bully: In their younger years openly mocked Zenon, calling him pathetic.
  • Biomanipulation: Dante's Body magic allows him to repair and alter his physique at will.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: Inverted, in that his eyes turn pure white instead of black, but combined with his skin turning black it corresponds in his unhinged demeanour really showing during his fight with Asta and Yami.
  • Blood Knight: Appears to be this in his first fight. He has a wide smile as he fights Asta and Yami, and becomes even more pleased when Yami manages to wound him to the point he has to use his second magic, calling him magnificent and stating that he's looking forward to their fight. Then it turns out that was just because of who he was fighting — when Magna fights at his level, Dante becomes incresingly embarrased and enraged that a "lowly peasant" with little magic power is now pounding his face in.
  • Body Horror: His Body Magic regenerates himself, by having his flesh grow over his wounds and tendrils reconnect and reform destroyed parts. Dante himself doesn't like using his magic because of how unsightly it is. It goes wild after he's defeated by Magna, forming tendril masses from his large, misshapen body with Dante even unable to speak fully coherently.
  • Body Motifs: His Body Magic manifests excessive amounts of flesh, turning him into a significantly more muscular and monstrous form with four arms.
  • Boxing Battler: How he fights bare-handed. His unarmed spell "Heavy Infighting" comes from the boxing term for getting close to an opponent. Unfortunately for him, without his magic supporting him Magna is much better at it.
  • Break the Haughty: A narcissistic Smug Super with a god complex is ultimately defeated by a low-class peasant with no Arcane Stage or devil host. The battering to his body is nothing compared to the shattering of his ego.
  • The Brute: A unique case where he's both this and The Leader of the Dark Triad, in a character archetype that doesn't usually find itself in the leader role. He is the strongest Dark Triad in terms of raw power and stamina, but doesn't have much tactics other than simply brute-forcing enemies. He's also very vulnerable to surprise tactics because of that combined with his pride.
  • Came Back Strong: After his fight with Asta and Yami, he's rescued by Zenon and placed in a healing chamber made by Morris that will make him even stronger than before. This ends up enhancing his regeneration powers to the point that even Jack's adaptive Severing magic doesn't effect him. Unfortunately, it doesn't help him against Manga, thanks to his new spell dividing their powers evenly between each other.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Dante needs to capture Yami alive to use his Dark Magic to form the Tree of Qliphoth. But as long as Yami's alive, he would like to tear a leg or two off from him when they fight.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: He calls evil a vital part of human nature and gloats over his malicious intentions, even saying his malice will never be satisfied no matter how many atrocities he has committed. He's even complimented when Asta calls him evil.
  • Childish Older Sibling: Dante is much more self-indulgent and lecherous than his serious younger brother Zenon.
  • Combat Tentacles: He can use his Body Magic to form tendrils of flesh that he can use to repel enemies and ensnare flying weapons.
  • Cool Crown: He wears a tall spiked crown embedded with red jewels.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: He claims Vanessa as his woman for her beauty and magic. When she uses her power over fate to help her squadmates, he shoots a furious glare at her and asserts that she's his woman.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: He wipes the floor with Asta while using only 60% of Lucifero's power.
  • David Versus Goliath: The Goliath to Magna's David, being an incredibly powerful devil user against a peasant with low magic power. Magna uses his Soul Chain Death Match on Dante when he lets him get a free hit on him out of arrogance. This gives them each half of their combined magic power, with Magna coming out victorious when they get into a fistfight once they run out.
  • Didn't See That Coming:
    • After Asta's arm is transformed by his devil to radiate anti-magic, he watches out for his attacks and uses his Body Magic to ensnare his anti-magic swords to prevent him from landing a clean hit. He's caught off-guard when Yami passed his katana to Asta, who envelops it in anti-magic with his arm to defeat Dante.
    • He REALLY wasn’t expecting the much weaker Magna to completely circumvent his magic and give him a beat down, and on equal footing no less.
  • Drunk with Power: Shows shades of this in his fight with Yami and Asta upon entering his 80% Devil Union, laughing madly and proclaiming himself invincible.
  • Dual Wielding: When fighting Asta and Yami, after Asta gains a more powerful anti-magic arm from his devil Dante forms another pair of arms, with each of them wielding giant swords.
  • Empty Shell: He describes himself in the past as completely dissatisfied with life until he discovered true "malice". Flashbacks show him with an emotionless expression even when sleeping with women, celebrating military victories, and killing animals as well as the former Spade Kingdom king.
  • Enhanced Punch: Thanks to his Gravity Magic, he can use Selective Gravity to increase the weight and speed of his punches. He lays on Asta with a barrage of these so hard it looks like his face is being pummeled into different directions simultaneously.
  • Entitled to Have You:
    • After wiping Vanessa's Red Thread of Fate spell upon Asta by making Rouge disappear, Dante gives her a Death Glare at her and claims she cannot use her power on anyone else because she's his woman.
    • Once he finds out that Grey is also an Arcane Stage, he proclaims her to be his woman as well.
  • Evil Counterpart: As he is one to Asta, Dante is also one to Yami. Both are the leaders of their respective groups, magic swordsmen, and have dark powers, with Dante being a devil user and Yami having Dark Magic. But while Yami is a rough man who has a kinder side underneath and is a Clueless Chick-Magnet, Dante has an affable demeanor which hides his twistedness and claims women who interest him as his, whether they like it or not.
  • Evil Is Visceral: A devil user who believes that malice is humanity's true nature and acts as such, and his Body Magic lets him reform his flesh and sprout flesh tendrils from his body.
  • Evil Overlord: After overthrowing the House of Grinberryall, he is the acting ruler of the Spade Kingdom and leads its military to attack the Clover and Heart Kingdoms.
  • Facial Markings: He has a dark mark across his forehead. It noticeably enlarges when using more of his devil's power.
  • Fangs Are Evil: At higher percentages of Lucifero's power his teeth sharpen into fangs.
  • Fantastic Racism: He has a low opinion of people who have very low mana, looking down on Asta as a result.
  • Fatal Flaw: Pride. Dante's belief that he's undefeatable and so above even using his magic on someone with as weak magic as Magna lets Magna get a free hit on Dante with his Soul Chain Death Match, combining their magical power and splitting it equally between the two, with Magna now actually able to injure Dante and forcing Dante to fight Magna seriously when he normally wouldn't even need to. It backfires hard against Dante when they run out of magical power, causing Dante to be unable to use his regeneration, and Magna ends up defeating him in a fistfight.
  • Faux Affably Evil: When he first meets the Black Bulls he politely introduces himself with a seemingly easygoing demeanor and compliments Vanessa on her beauty and power. Then he angrily tells her she's his woman when she uses her magic to help her comrades, is enraged when Asta lands a small cut on his face, and discusses his philosophy that true human nature is malice.
  • The Fighting Narcissist: Very much a narcissist who believes in his power and thinks he's entitled to women who interest him, and breaks his seemingly easygoing demeanor when he gets furious at Asta for barely cutting his face when they fight.
  • A God Am I: Thanks to the power of his Body Magic to make him unable to die, Dante sees himself as an undefeatable phenomenon in an unequal and unfair world. He compliments Yami for pushing him far enough but believes that in the end he will still crush everything and win, calling that feeling of superiority the supreme ecstasy... which makes it all the more humiliating when a low-class peasant who's not even a main character hands him his final defeat.
  • Good Hair, Evil Hair: He has his black hair combed-back with a notable sheen, and is a merciless, misogynistic guy who revels in being evil.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: While having his magic power halved while Magna uses his Soul Chain Death Match on him, Dante is unable to push him down with his Gravity Magic and resorts to getting into a fist-fight with him.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: His Body Magic lets him regenerate from any injury no matter how severe. He survives getting slashed through the chest and having his torso destroyed repeatedly. It takes an anti-magic slash from Asta's new devil arm to finally defeat him. Following his second loss against Magna, said recovery magic is potent enough that he can recover from being knocked unconscious and even keep trying to continue fighting despite his wounds and being almost entirely out of magic, though in his weakened state he's unable to control his recovery anymore, resulting in his flesh twisting and contorting into misshapen growths. In that pitiful state, all it take is one more attack from Jack to put him down for good.
  • Graceful Loser: Despite being defeated by Asta and Yami, he looks forward to fighting Asta again with an eager grin on his face.
    • This is pointedly Averted following his second loss against Magna this time, refusing to accept losing to a mere peasant and pushing his remaining dregs of magic to repair his body to continue fighting, even when his connection to Lucifero has been severed and his inability to control his magic power anymore is turning him into a misshapen blob. Nonetheless, Dante is still determined to keep fighting regardless, forcing Jack to stay behind and finish him off before he tries fighting against the Black Bulls again, so as not to allow Dante to ruin Magna's hard-won victory against him.
  • Gravity Is Purple: The mana of his Gravity Magic is colored purple in the anime.
  • Gravity Master: He uses Gravity Magic, allowing him to make things float or slam into the ground and compress stones into different forms. He first shows this off by leveling an entire forest. He can also apply Selective Gravity to a small scale where needed, augmenting his swordsmanship by quickly and precisely altering the weights of his swords and his arms.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He states that he's jealous of Yami for having so many Arcane Stages in his squad, admitting it's the first time in his life that he's been envious of a human.
  • Growing Muscles Sequence: By kicking his Body Magic into overdrive, Dante can forcibly and grotesquely expand his musculature to the point he easily towers over his foes.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: By condensing his Mana Zone even further, Yami destroys his entire torso. He regenerates himself using his Body Magic.
  • Handsome Lech: A darker example. Dante is certainly good looking and enamored with women who pique his interest, but treats them like objects, claiming them as his and getting enraged if they refuse to serve him, as seen when Vanessa uses her powers to help Asta.
  • Has a Type: Seems to like to claim female Arcane Stages as his women.
  • Healing Factor: His innate magic is Body Magic, regenerating his flesh to heal himself. Thanks to hosting Lucifero, this power is incredibly boosted to a point he can't age, deteriorate, or die.
  • Hulking Out: When he transforms through his Body Magic, he becomes a muscled giant, towering over Yami.
  • Humanoid Abomination: When transformed using his Body Magic, he retains his humanoid shape in spite of turning into a musclebound giant and even growing another pair of arms.
  • Humans Are Bastards: His core philosophy. More accurately, he feels being evil in of itself is to be human, stating that "malice" is the one supreme emotion that differs humans from animals. When Asta denies this, he stabs Gauche. He's pleased at seeing an angry, berserk Asta, saying that his rage is what makes him human.
  • Insult Backfire: He takes Asta's disgust with him for mistreating his subjects as a compliment because of his philosophy that true humanity is malice, considering himself more human for that.
  • Irony: While in recovery, Dante wishes to fight Asta again, however he’s ultimately defeated by another Black Bulls member, Magna who beats him in a fist fight.
  • The Juggernaut: Thanks to his Body Magic, he can heal from any wound almost instantaneously and turn massive with incredible power on top of his Gravity Magic, letting him form black orbs that destroy anything in their path. It takes the combined efforts of Yami, whose Dark Magic has good affinity with his Gravity Magic, and Asta, who has to give his arm to his devil for more power, for him to barely be defeated before Asta runs out of time with his new power.
  • The Kirk: He strikes an middle between the merciless, rational Zenon and psychotic, hedonistic Vanica. Despite his sadism and pride, Dante is still focused on completing the Dark Triad's mission, not as much as Zenon but much moreso than Vanica.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Called Zenon pathetic as a child for getting beaten up by bullies. As adults, Zenon would later call the arrogant Dante pathetic as he saves him from the Black Bulls after getting defeated by Asta and Yami and finishing his job. And later on during the Spade raid, he's the first of the Triad to be defeated, getting beaten by Magna while Zenon becomes the last one in the group still standing.
  • The Leader: He's the Dark Triad's overall leader despite all three members ruling the Spade Kingdom together with an iron fist.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Thanks to his Gravity Magic he moves fast and his physical attacks are increased in weight and speed, strong enough to defeat Asta with his fists at 60% of his devil's power.
  • Logical Weakness: His Body Magic allows him to regenerate to obscene levels, coming back from having his entire torso destroyed, which Dante is very reliant on, and his Gravity Magic can stop almost any attack and has incredible destructive power. With Asta's Anti-Magic, he can hinder his Healing Factor to give Dante trouble. His Gravity Magic also has bad compatibility with Yami's Dark Magic, which can form black holes to absorb Dante's gravity singularities and his wide gravitational effects. In spite of Dante's vast power, it's thanks to this bad matchup, combined with Asta making a bargain with his devil to gain stronger Anti-Magic by giving him power over his arm, that Dante is barely defeated by Asta and Yami.
  • Magic Knight: He uses his magic to increase the power and speed of his sword blows, fighting evenly with self-proclaimed "magic swordsman" Yami.
  • Marked Change:
    • The marking across his forehead becomes larger when using higher percentages of Lucifero's power.
    • When using Lucifero's power, a cross-like symbol appears on his chest, which becomes more prominent when he uses his Body Magic to regenerate himself.
  • Mask of Sanity: He presents himself with a laidback and easygoing demeanor when he's actually a sociopath with an obsession with committing heinous acts to satiate himself, wanting to bring devils to the world and kill 90% of the population. As he fights Yami and Asta he becomes more unhinged as his form turns more monstrous.
  • Meaningful Name: His name comes from Dante of The Divine Comedy, who journeys through the nine Circles of Hell. Fitting for the host of the devil Lucifero.
  • Minor Injury Overreaction: He's enraged when Asta is able to hit him, merely because it put a small cut on his face.
  • Mirror Character: The Dark Triad are the respective evil counterparts to the main trio: Dante and Asta are devil hosts whose fighting styles rely on physical power and wielding swords. They also believe in the power of malicious emotions. But while Asta thinks being human is having the heart to control them to do what's right, Dante espouses that being evil in of itself is being human. Furthermore, while Asta is a fairly competent and skilled fighter, Dante ironically is the easiest to defeat of the three, being outmatched by Yami and even Magna on both confrontations he's been involved in.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Using his Body Magic he forms another giant pair of arms for himself to wield swords when fighting Asta and Yami.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: Transforming with his Body Magic makes Dante gigantic and muscular, and able to shatter the ground with a punch and throw countless debris with an arm swing.
  • Mythical Motifs: Devils, just like the rest of his siblings. His Devil Union form gives him four horns, bat like wings, needle sharp teeth on top of a forked tail and claws. Even his own Body Magic lets him Hulk Out, becoming much more monstrous in appearance.
  • Narcissist: Of the Dark Triad, Dante embodies the trait of Narcissism. He claims any woman who interests him as his and gets angry when they refuse to serve him, thinks that he's completely undefeatable thanks to his power and regenerative ability and talks down on enemies as a result, and is enraged when Asta mildly nicks his face while they're fighting. His volume profile even states that one of his favorite things is himself.
  • Nightmare Face: He has a very unsettling one when he uses his Body Magic to regenerate from Yami destroying his torso, thanking Yami for pushing him enough to use his Body Magic.
  • No-Sell: His fight with the Black Bulls has Dante easily stop Gauche's and Henry's attacks from reaching him using his Gravity Magic. To make matters worse, he easily dispels Vanessa's Red Thread of Fate magic by exerting his magical power, allowing the Black Bulls to be harmed.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: He tried to pull this on Asta, saying that they should see eye to eye because they're both possessed by devils. Understandably, after seeing the Dark Triad's mistreatment of their subjects, Asta rejects him.
  • Not Worth Killing: He sees Magna and Zora's magic as far too low and not being Arcane Stage magic for him to even fight seriously, stating that he won't even use his magic on garbage like Magna. This backfires on Dante when Magna gets a free hit on Dante to use his Soul Chain Death Match, letting Magna actually fight him on even ground by splitting their combined magical power equally between them.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • The look on Dante's eyes scream this when noticing Asta's more powerful anti-magic after making a deal with his devil, transforming his right arm. He has this on his face again when Yami passes his katana to Asta, who lands the defeating slash on Dante.
    • Gets a major one when he realizes that Magna’s Soul Chain Death Match also made him run out of ALL of his magic, something he didn't anticipate because it had literally never happened to him before.
  • One-Winged Angel:
    • Reforming his body after Yami destroys his torso makes his body incredibly muscular and gigantic, complete with dark wings, claws, horns, and a tail. He can even form an extra pair of arms to wield four swords simultaneously.
    • After the gate to the Qliphoth is opened, he can use 100% of his devil power, covering most of his body in dark energy and gaining a visor, four demonic wings, and tail.
  • Perma-Stubble: His goatee and mustache are stubble.
  • Personality Powers: Dante is an egotistical narcissist who believes himself to be entitled to trample over all those weaker than him, and has Gravity Magic, a power that can have him make others kneel to him. He's miffed when he sees that Yami is able to stand thanks to his combination of Dark Magic and Mana Zone.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: His Gravity Magic allows him to level an entire forest with ease and send gigantic chunks of stone from the ground flying. His Gravity Singularity destroys everything around it, forming a giant path and hole through a mountain.
  • Pitiful Worms: Calls Jack, who has a praying mantis motif, an insect and unimpressive captain for being unable to stand against Dante's Gravity Magic. Jack manifests blades throughout his body to cut through Dante's gravity and wounds him, telling him not to underestimate insects complete with the visage of a praying mantis.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: He's misogynistic, declaring Vanessa to be his woman for her beauty and power over fate and becoming enraged when she uses it on Asta, telling her that she's his woman.
  • Powerful, but Incompetent: He is the host of the strongest Devil and can easily kill almost anyone in the planet within a few hits, but he's so full of himself that he isn't prepared for the possibility of weaker opponents using tactics that can actually harm or cripple him. He also doesn't seem to have a proper battle strategy other than spamming high-level magic to overwhelm opponents. This makes him a less dangerous threat than Zenon (who not only can fight tactfully, but also single-handedly got the Dark Triad's objective done) in the big picture.
  • Power High: Dante undergoes this as he fights Yami using his Body Magic, jealous that he is superior to himself in battle instincts and techniques but he won't die thanks to his magic, calling the world unfair and proclaiming that he'll crush everything.
  • Power-Up Full Color Change: As he uses higher percentages of his devil power, his body is covered in dark energy.
  • Power-Upgrading Deformation: His Body Magic lets him regenerate even his entire torso, but it has his flesh grotesquely reform. Dante himself states that he'd rather not use it because he hates how ugly it is when he regenerates or transforms.
  • Production Throwback: His forehead mark and powers over gravity are a reference to the Newtonian Apple from Tabata's previous manga Hungry Joker.
  • Purple Is Powerful: One of the strongest mages in the story, the leader of the Dark Triad, and host of the most powerful devil. His grimoire is black and purple and his Gravity Magic mana is purple in the anime.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Subverted. He's the leader of the Dark Triad and the host of the strongest devil amongst the group, but he's definitely not their strongest fighter and actually gets defeated in both instances he's fought.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: Using his magic he can move fast enough to unleash a gravity-enhanced version of these in Boxing Battler style.
  • Really Gets Around: Implied. In his past, it is shown that he was an Empty Shell before embracing malice, with it showing a shirtless Dante near a woman on his bed, implying that he slept with women to no avail. Not to mention he likes claiming any woman who personally interests him as his.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: While using his devil power transformations, Dante's eyes turn red.
  • Scars Are Forever: He gains a large scar across his chest from Asta's defeating attack using Yami's katana during their fight against Dante. The scar remains even in spite of his Body Magic and using high percentages of his devil power.
  • Scary Teeth: His teeth become small and pointed when he uses 80% of Lucifero's power.
  • Selective Gravity: He can do this with his Gravity Magic instead of applying it over a large scale, increasing the weight and speed of specifically his punches and sword swings to increase their power.
  • Shout-Out: His name comes from Dante of The Divine Comedy who journeys through hell.
  • Slasher Smile:
    • He sports an unsettling one when he talks about the Dark Triad's plan to bring devils into the living world.
    • He does this again when Yami destroys his torso, feeing gratified that he's being pushed hard enough to use his Body Magic, and maintains it for the remainder of the fight.
  • Smug Super: Thanks to his Body Magic being enhanced to the point he can regenerate from any injury and not die, he sees himself as unbeatable and believes that he'll crush everything and win.
  • The Sociopath: In the past he was bored with life, unable to feel anything from sleeping with women, celebrating with comrades, destruction, or killing other beings. At some point, he began to believe that malice is vital to human nature, even stating that his malice will never be satisfied no matter how many atrocities he commits. So much so that his goal is to make the world brim with malice by having devils pour in, causing untold destruction and countless deaths if achieved.
  • Sphere of Power: Dante's spell Gravity Singularity forms a small black orb of gravity that destroys everything near its path, making a hole through a mountain and warping Yami's Dimension Slash attack.
  • Spontaneous Weapon Creation: Dante can use his Gravity Magic to compress large boulders into swords that he can send flying at an enemy.
  • Stalker without a Crush: Gets called a creepy stalker by Yami for wanting to capture him and knowing so much about him, which Dante himself freely admits to.
  • Straw Nihilist: Dante believes life holds no value or meaning outside of engaging in malice. This mindset stems from being an Empty Shell all his life until he had embraced this ideology, which causes him to see malice as essential to human nature due it being the distinguishing characteristic from animals. He himself enjoys seeing Asta and Yami feel emotions such as anger and hatred when he fights against them.
  • Superpower Lottery: Gravity Magic is very powerful, allowing him to stop attacks from reaching him, warp space to evade enemies, and form small black holes that destroy everything in their path. His innate Body Magic is boosted by the power of Lucifer, allowing him to heal instantaneously from any wound, even having his torso destroyed. It's for this reason that Dante has such a large ego about his power and considers himself unbeatable. Even when he does lose to Yami and Asta in the first battle, it's made clear it was only due to Asta's newest power-up and the fact that the duo's abilities were the perfect hard counters to his own magics, and they only just eked out a win.
  • Sword and Fist: Although he mostly uses swords, he's good enough with his fists to dominate an enraged Black Asta.
  • Teach Him Anger: Dante tells Asta that evil is the true shape of humanity, with Asta retorting that being human is controlling those negative emotions to do what's right. Dante stabs Gauche to awaken Asta's malice and is quite pleased to see his Black form more corrupted.
  • This Cannot Be!: Starts screaming a version of this once it becomes obvious that Magna is actually going to beat him.
Dante: I CAN'T POSSIBLY LOSE!!! NOT ME! NOT TO A — A NOBODY LIKE YOU!!!
  • Too Many Belts: He wears two belts across his waist.
  • Top-Heavy Guy: When he goes One-Winged Angel, while Dante's lower body and legs do gain decent bulk, it's outmatched by how much muscle his upper body and especially his arms get, which only becomes more exaggerated when he grows a second set of similarly-muscular arms.
  • Uncertain Doom: After getting defeated by Magna, Dante regenerates from his Body Magic going out of control but a lone Jack, with the others having gone ahead, decides to cut Dante down to not taint Magna's victory, with a slashing sound on a black panel before the scene changes.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: He gets a lot of mileage out of simply crushing his opponents with his gravity magic, buffing his attacks with his body's alterations, and using his regeneration to shrug off anything that can actually harm him. This comes back to bite him HARD during his fight with Magna, as Dante has spent so much time beating down weaker opponents that he's never accounted for somebody on the same level as him, how much magic that he'd burn through in said instance, or fighting without his magic when he'd run out.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Dante absolutely loses it after Magna drains them both of all their magic powers and forced to use his fists as a last resort, but still loses in the end.
  • Villainous Crush: Dante develops one on Vanessa because of her beauty and power over fate, claiming her to be his woman and getting angered when she uses her magic to help her fellow Black Bulls.
  • Villain Respect: He calls Yami magnificent for being a human who made him need to use his Body Magic, acknowledging his battle techniques and instincts as greater than his own. Of course, he has no such respect for mere peasants with no great magical power, so when Magna starts beating him down, he's just humiliated.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Discards his upon going into 80% Devil Union, revealing blackened skin with a symbol on his chest.
  • Was Once a Man: Yami states he's not human anymore when he uses his devil power-boosted Body Magic to transform into a musclebound, humanoid monster.

Voiced by: Yui Ogura (Japanese), Lindsay Seidel (English)

Debut: Chapter 231 (Manga), Episode 158 (Anime)

Magic Attribute: Blood + Curse-Warding

"I want to get all fired up with the tough guys who manage to survive in a place like that. Humans who are weak enough to die don't interest me."

One of the rulers of the Spade Kingdom and a member of the Dark Triad. She is the sister of Dante and Zenon, and devil host of the supreme devil Megicula. Vanica cast a deadly curse on Acier Silva, the mother of Noelle, and Lolopechka, the Princess of the Heart Kingdom. She uses the power of her devil to follow her selfish desires and loves fighting strong enemies, feeling superiority in showing the power differential between herself and them.

She uses two types of magic, the devil Megicula's Curse-Warding Magic to cast powerful curses and her innate Blood Magic, congealing blood into different forms.

  • Achievements in Ignorance: A villainous one. Vanica's decision to capture Lolopechka instead of killing her, which was suggested by Megicula out of pragmatism, to motivate Noelle to become stronger for her to have a better fight becomes very useful for the Dark Triad when Morris transplants Lolopechka's wisdom into himself and use said knowledge to accelerate the Tree of Qliphoth's growth.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Zig-Zagged. She's an imposing villainess with black hair and can be psychotically expressive, but can easily switch to being callous and cruel whenever prompted, like when an enemy no longer amuses her or towards her Dark Disciples.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Her interest in fighting a strong female opponent has these undertones, with Vanica telling Charlotte she likes her "soooooo much" and asking the captain to come with her.
  • Ax-Crazy: Ax-Crazy enough to order her minions to slaughter innocent civilians just to rile up her opponents for Vanica to have a fun battle. She becomes more psychotic when fighting and using more of her devil's power, grinning maniacally and treating the battle against Noelle like a game of tag.
  • Bad Boss:
    • She brutally dropkicks one of her Dark Disciples when he's revived, telling him to shut his mouth, just to show off the power of her resurrection curse.
    • After capturing Lolopechka, she doesn't need her Dark Disciples anymore and detonates them using the devil power that she gave them. According to Megicula, this isn't the first time she killed her Dark Disciples.
  • Bad Powers, Bad People: A selfish, battle-hungry mage with a disregard for others' lives has the power to curse people to death. Interestingly, her Curse-Warding Magic actually comes from Megicula. Her innate magic is Blood Magic, which fits her just as well.
  • Bait-and-Switch Boss: Downplayed. She's built up as Noelle's arch-nemesis and her Climax Boss. However, when Noelle almost beats her, Megicula quickly puts her out of action and takes over the fight, making it more of a fight against Megicula than Vanica herself.
  • The Baroness: A Sexpot Baroness. She's a relatively young, attractive woman who wears an eyepatch and outfit that shows off her legs who's usually enthusiastic, but is very cold and indifferent to her loyal subordinates, abusing one without care.
  • Beauty Is Bad: She's certainly good looking and her subordinates think she's beautiful, despite being an inhumane Blood Knight.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Her strong desire to fight powerful foes has twice backfired on her, first when it led her to nearly getting killed by Acier, forcing her to fatally curse her and flee, and again years later, when Acier's youngest daughter easily defeats her with her new Saint Stage, which she only reached because Vanica let her go the first time they fought so she'd be an even better fight later.
  • Big Brother Worship: Implied, as she affectionately refers to Dante as "big bro".
  • Big Sister Bully: Was this to Zenon in their youth, openly mocking him and calling him a loser.
  • Blood Knight: Vanica's volume profile states that her favorite thing is bloody battles. She loves fighting strong opponents, so much so that she had her Dark Disciples attack places where people live so Lolopechka would be more invested in the fight. When fighting Noelle she maniacally enjoys it, telling her not to die too fast. When Noelle beats her in the rematch, she's more focused and giddy at the thought that they could do this again than by the fact she lost.
  • Blood Magic: Vanica mainly uses Blood Magic, forming a giant Red Beast out of blood to fight for her and congealing blood into attacks.
  • Bloody Murder: She uses her Blood Magic to attack by solidifying it, forming wings and a giant claw, unleashing bladed beams of blood from it.
  • Body Motifs: Blood, given that her Blood Magic makes use of her own blood for spells, and her nature as a Blood Knight of the more disturbing variety.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Vanica has her black hair in a short bob and is obsessed with fighting strong enemies.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: When questioned by Noelle about killing her mother Acier, she doesn't remember her and stated that she doesn't care if it's already over, fitting given Vanica's focus is on current or future foes that can impress her rather than reminiscing on past battles. When Noelle uses her Valkyrie Armor, she remembers Acier and mockingly recalls Noelle's mother to taunt her.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Vanica loves a good, bloody battle, and her desire for them motivates her to commit atrocious acts like ordering the massacre of innocent civilians and bringing devils to the living world so that she can fight those who are strong enough to survive.
  • Childish Older Sibling: Vanica is much more impulsive and bloodthirsty than her serious younger brother Zenon.
  • Co-Dragons: With Zenon to Dante, though technically they are in Big Bad Duumvirate, but Vanica and Zenon are just members of the Dark Triad, while Dante is the overall leader.
  • Combat Compliment: Compliments Noelle, calling her attacks good, great, and fantastic all with a wide grin on her face when she proves to be a Worthy Opponent while using Saint Valkyrie Armor during their rematch.
  • Combat Sadomasochist: She loves fighting strong enemies, and grins when she gets impaled by Noelle's lance even with blood coming out from her mouth. Her volume profile states that her favorite thing is bloody battles.
  • Cool Crown: She wears a spiked tiara embedded with red jewels.
  • Curse: Thanks to being the host of Megicula, she has Curse-Warding Magic, able to inflict powerful curses on others. She fatally cursed Lolopechka and can even curse her Dark Disciples to not die.
  • Cute and Psycho: She's attractive and acts very cheerful, despite being a deranged Blood Knight. Her Japanese voice actress is known for playing Token Mini Moes.
  • Dark Action Girl: A given as the only female of the Dark Triad. She's a maniacal Blood Knight empowered by a devil who uses her magic to form blood as a weapon. She overpowers Noelle and Lolopechka even at an elemental disadvantage.
  • Duality Motif: When Megicula possesses her body, it takes over the right half, turning it black with white hair and dark goat horns and wings in contrast to Vanica's normal skin, black hair, and blood attachments on the left.
  • Elemental Eye Colors: Vanica has red eyes and her innate magic is Blood Magic.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Being a powerful woman who lives for fighting strong enemies, she told Acier that she couldn't understand why she would have children, stating that they wear you out and get in the way, after taking Nozel and a baby Noelle hostage. This backfired on her hard when Acier went Mama Bear on Vanica and dealt her a lethal wound.
  • Eyepatch of Power: She wears an eyepatch with the Spade Kingdom insignia over her right eye, and is very much powerful. When Megicula takes over the right half of her body, the eyepatch is removed, revealing her darkened eye. It's implied however this otherwise covers an injury she sustained from one of her bloody rampages, since she does not wear it before Zenon accepted the eldest Zogratis sibling's offer to become a devil host.
  • Facial Markings: Vanica's right eye is surrounded by a circular dotted marking that's covered by her eyepatch. When Megicula takes over, she gets a similar marking around her left eye.
  • Familial Foe: With the power of her devil, she fought Noelle's mother Acier Silva and fatally cursed her. Over 15 years later, she fights Noelle, whose goals are to break the curse Vanica cast on her friend Lolopechka as well as avenge her mother.
  • Fangs Are Evil: When Megicula takes over half of her body her teeth sharpen into fangs.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Vanica may seem like a upbeat and friendly woman, but she's a savage maniac who loves to slack off and wreck havoc for fun.
  • Foil:
    • To her brother Zenon. Zenon is cold, emotionless, and merciless, with his acts motivated out of loyalty to the Spade Kingdom trying to kill Yuno who he sees as a potential threat to the Dark Triad's plans. On the other hand, Vanica is psychotically cheerful, expressive, and fights purely for enjoyment, leaving Noelle alive because she sees that she has the potential to become a worthy opponent for Vanica.
    • To Lolopechka. They're both women of authority — Lolopechka being the princess of the Heart Kingdom and Vanica one of the Spade Kingdom's rulers. Vanica, however, is a psychotic blood mage whose actions are motivated by her hedonistic love for fighting and sees her subordinates as disposable. Lolopechka, on the other hand, is a kind water mage (the magical attribute blood is weak to) who cares greatly for her subjects and was so kind as a child that she couldn't even learn attack spells.
    • To Charlotte, who she battles when the Clover Kingdom's special assault force invades the Spade Kingdom. Charlotte is composed, stern, and fights out of her loyalty to the Clover Kingdom. Vanica is an enthusiastic psychopath motivated by her hate for boredom and enjoyment in fighting powerful opponents. Charlotte's coldness hides a softer side towards her subordinates, while Vanica is cruel and callous to her Dark Disciples. And while Vanica is the host of the devil Megicula, Charlotte was cursed as a child, with Megicula being the progenitor of all curse magic in the world. Charlotte tells Vanica she dislikes ridiculous women like her before restraining her in a tangle of her anti-curse briars.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Proposes this to Noelle after she defeats Vanica, who's completely happy with how amazing it felt fighting her. Noelle understandably shuts it down and is about to kill her until Megicula appears.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: Using 100% devil power after the gate to the Qliphoth opens has her lose all her clothes in the form, leaving her essentially covered in her magic, which disappears after Noelle defeats her.
  • Graceful Loser: Takes her defeat by Noelle very well, satisfied with how amazing it felt fighting her and proposing friendship and rivalry with her. Noelle won't have any of it and is about to kill her until Megicula shows up.
  • Guardian Entity: Her spell Red Beast forms a monster out of blood that's connected to her to attack and defend against enemies on her behalf.
  • Having a Blast: She can detonate devil power that she gave her Dark Disciples. She turns them into curse bombs once she's captured Lolopechka.
  • Hero Killer: She fatally cursed Acier Silva, the former captain and strongest fighter of the Silver Hawks. And Nozel literally had to act like a jerk in front of Noelle to prevent him from falling the same fate as her.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Since her whole motivation is self-amusement, she's bound to repeatedly sabotage herself in reckless abandon. First of all, unlike Dante or Zenon, Vanica targets Lolopechka for the sake of amusement, despite she shouldn't be relevant to what the Dark Triad wants to do at hand. Then she goes against Megicula's advise and insists to take the Heart Kindgom princess back to the Spade Kingdom for a reason that can be interpreted as pissing Noelle off. Before she leaves, she also turns all of her Dark Disciples into living bombs because she doesn't need them, despite she could resurrect them at any time and thus come back to Noelle with a sizable number advantage instead of having to fight her and multiple other magic knights 1 to 4.
  • I Need You Stronger: She really enjoys fighting strong opponents. She takes Lololpechka to the Spade Kingdom instead of killing her in hopes that Noelle will get stronger, remembering that Noelle's mother Acier became much stronger after she had took Nozel and Noelle hostage.
  • I Shall Taunt You: She deliberately recalls to Noelle how her mother Acier became much stronger when she had taken Nozel with a baby Noelle hostage, only infuriating her further after she kidnaps Lololpechka so Noelle can get stronger.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice:
    • She gets stabbed by Noelle's lance underwater, only laughing as blood comes out of her mouth. She gets run through by Noelle's water lance again after she manages to barely dodge all her attacks.
    • Gets caught by surprise and stabbed by Noelle's sword during their rematch while she's using Saint Valkyrie Armor.
  • It Amused Me: She commits mass murder and uses Lolopechka to piss of Noelle for fun. There's literally no reason to even go after Lolopechka since she (supposedly) has nothing to do with the Qliphoth Tree Ritual, Vanica only bothered because she thought Lolopechka would be a powerful fighter she could entertain herself with.
  • Laughing Mad: Vanica laughs hysterically when Charlotte shows how strong she is when using a special anti-curse spell to easily defeat the Shining Generals, with Vanica happy to have found such a great opponent.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Even with a disadvantage underwater, Vanica is still able to chase down Noelle, who's in her Valkyrie Armor — Mermaid Form which is meant for underwater combat, at great speed and unleash deadly, flying slashes of blood with incredible power at higher percentages of her devil power.
  • Logical Weakness: It's much harder for blood to coagulate underwater. As a result, Vanica's Blood Magic is half as effective in water, making her fight against Lolopechka and Noelle all the more challenging, not that she minds.
  • Lovely Angels: A twisted version with Lolopechka, making her a puppet using her curse to fight alongside her against Rill and Charlotte, calling her sweetie and sadistically stroking her face.
Vanica: I guess our teamwork was stronger, right? Lolopechka, sweetie.
  • Mad Bomber: She's certainly unhinged and can use her Curse-Warding Magic to detonate devil power. She uses it to turn her Dark Disciples into curse bombs once she no longer needs them, detonating them throughout the Heart Kingdom.
  • Made of Iron: She shrugs off getting impaled with Noelle's water lance twice.
  • Maniac Tongue: She does this often, protruding her tongue to draw attention to how bloodthirsty and deranged she really is.
  • Marked Change:
    • Using at least 70% of Megicula's power manifests a heart-like mark on Vanica's torso.
    • When Megicula takes over the right half of Vanica's body, a dotted circular mark appears around her left eye.
  • The McCoy: The most emotional and childish of the Dark Triad. While Zenon is very rational and Dante, in spite of his pride and sadism, can be, Vanica is by-far much more psychotic and hedonistic, motivated by her love for fighting strong enemies so much so that she'll leave them alive and take captives instead of killing them to goad them into becoming stronger.
  • Mood-Swinger: Vanica can go from cheerfully talking about her atrocities like taking someone hostage to coldly demeaning her Dark Disciples, and gleefully enjoying a fight to being bored when an enemy is too weak for her taste.
  • Mook Maker: While using 100% devil power she can create a herd of Red Beasts.
  • More Deadly Than the Male: Compared to her brothers, the prideful Dante and cold Zenon, Vanica is much more psychotic and even more inhumane, ordering her Dark Disciples to slaughter innocent civilians. She fights in a more savage manner as well, trying to eviscerate Noelle with her magic when they fight.
  • Mirror Character: Vanica and Noelle both use liquid magic attributes, can be dismissive of others, and are prone to rapidly changing their moods. Although Noelle cares for her comrades and defends the weak, Vanica doesn't care at all about her loyal Dark Disciples and is only interested in fighting strong foes.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's certainly beautiful, her outfit shows off her legs, and there are angles that show off her panties underneath her skirt. And a 100 percent devil union, she loses her clothes entirely, wearing only magic, which is stripped away during the fight.
  • Mythical Motifs: Devils, just like the rest of her siblings. Her Devil Union form gives her four horns, bat like wings, needle sharp teeth on top of a forked tail and claws.
  • No-Sell:
    • She asks if Noelle's Sea Dragon's Roar, the same spell that ripped off Vetto's arm, was even an attack.
    • Thanks to Megicula's Curse-Warding Magic, rune arrays are ineffective against her, allowing herself and Megicula to easily break out of Nero's Mana Method: Eternal Prison.
    • Getting stabbed by Noelle's lance twice does little to slow her down. She easily dispels her point-blank Sea Dragon's Roar with her Red Beast.
  • Older Than She Looks: She has a youthful appearance despite being old enough to have fought Acier Silva sixteen years prior to her introduction to the story.
  • One-Winged Angel: After the gate to the Qliphoth is opened, she can use 100% of her devil power, covering her body in dark energy and blood, gaining wings, claws, and a tail. She breaks out from Charlotte's briars despite her curse power being sealed.
  • Orcus On Her Throne: Literally, with Vanica sitting on a throne while she has two Shining Generals fight Charlotte and Rill to see if they'd be any fun to fight. It backfires on her and Megicula when Charlotte's special anti-curse briars entangle her while Vanica let her guard down.
  • Orgasmic Combat: What with her Blood Knight nature. In the anime, she sounds like she's moaning from arousal as she fights Noelle and increases her devil power percentage. She's blushing with an expression of ecstasy when Noelle arrives at the scene for their rematch and nearly impales her throat.
  • People Puppets: Can use her Curse-Warding Magic to control others, using it to have the Shining Diamond Generals and later Lolopechka fight Charlotte and Rill.
  • Perky Female Minion: The only female in the Dark Triad who acts as Co-Dragons with Zenon under their older brother Dante. Vanica is also very enthusiastic, smiling gleefully, sticking her tongue out, and ending sentences with hearts when happy about fighting strong opponents and talking about killing innocent civilians.
  • Personality Powers: Bloodthirsty Vanica, who loves shedding blood when fighting strong enemies, uses Blood Magic, making her a literal Blood Knight.
  • Production Throwback: The marking that appears around Vanica's eye when Megicula takes over is a reference to the one that appears for users of the Mendelian Peas from Tabata's previous manga Hungry Joker.
  • Psychopathic Womanchild: Her childlike desire to fight makes her this. When fighting Noelle she treats it like a game of tag, telling her "here I come". She impatiently keeps on increasing the percentage of Megicula's power she's using when she's not even having trouble, causing her to fall for Lolopechka's plan, who expected her to use all her devil's power and have Nero seal her then.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: She has pale skin and black hair and is considered beautiful by her Dark Disciples, with Svenkin calling her his ideal woman.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Vanica has red eyes and is a powerful, bloodthirsty villainess. She even wields Blood Magic as well.
  • Red Is Violent: Has red eyes, a red Grimoire, and wields Blood Magic, all of which fits a psychopathic Blood Knight like her to a tee.
  • Saying Too Much: Averted. Noelle questions her as to what the Dark Triad’s plans are but Vanica simply asks back why she has to tell a nobody like her. Lolopechka finds out regardless using the wisdom of the past princesses.
  • Say It with Hearts: She ends her sentences with hearts often, which emphasize how deranged she really is.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: With her younger brother Zenon. Vanica is an impulsive, moody woman whose actions are motivated out of a desire to have bloody battles, while Zenon is a cold, rational man who loyally carries out his duties for the Spade Kingdom.
  • Slasher Smile: She has a psychotic grin on her face as she fights Noelle and tries to kill her.
  • Slouch of Villainy: Vanica takes this pose, while sitting on a throne no less, when she sics two Shining Generals whose power is enhanced by her curse on Charlotte and Rill.
  • Smug Super: Vanica is a very powerful mage who loves fighting strong opponents. She won't heed anyone she thinks to be too weak for her to have fun with, disregarding Noelle and Lolopechka when she's at 70% of Megicula's power. She later just sits on a throne and mocks Charlotte and Rill's magics, watching them fight empowered Shining Generals to see if they'd be worth fighting. It backfires on her when Charlotte uses her anti-curse roses against her, more effective on those with stronger curse power, while Vanica lets her guard down.
  • The Social Darwinist: She's indifferent to the 90% of people on the continent who would die if the Dark Triad creates the Tree of Qliphoth. She states that the humans weak enough to die don't interest her and she'd only want to fight those strong enough to survive.
  • Spirited Competitor: What sets Vanica apart from her brothers is that she doesn't just crave combat, she wants a Worthy Opponent to push her to her full potential for the thrill, while Zenon just wants to get the job done and Dante wants to stroke his ego with overwhelming victory. The weak don't cut it for her and leave her utterly bored, and so she obsesses over anyone she thinks is strong and could match her. She doesn't even seem to mind the fact that Noelle beats her in their rematch, only excited at the fact Noelle got so strong so fast and the possibility that they could do this again.
  • Stupid Evil: Disposing of her Dark Disciples even if she could just resurrect them every time they're taken down doesn't make her a very bright person.
  • Summon Magic: Can summon a monster made of blood called Red Beast, which has a vast mouth and razor sharp claws.
  • Super-Empowering: She's the source of her Dark Disciples' devil power, and can even cast a resurrective curse on them so that they can't die so long as she's active. It backfires on her Dark Disciples when Vanica detonates the devil power she gave them once they've served their purpose for her.
  • Terms of Endangerment: In the Japanese text, Vanica mockingly refers to Noelle and Lolopechka with "-chan", even adding a heart symbol at the end.
  • Troll: Vanica's whole battle strategy was to spite opponents as much as possible then bail just to make them lash out against her with even greater force the next time they meet. This proved to cause her end quick when she prodded on Noelle's nerves a bit too far.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Like her brother Dante, falls into this despite her love of fighting, preferring to overwhelm opponents with power and viciousness rather than any fancy tactics, which nearly proves her downfall when Charlotte manages to trap her with her upgraded Briar Magic. Notably she needs a 100% Devil Union and additional assistance from Megicula to stand a chance against Noelle's newly unlocked Saint Drive.
  • Unwitting Pawn: She is one to her own devil, Megicula, she needs Vanica to die in order to come into the human world, even though it will slow down the Tree of Qliphoth gate.
  • Victory Is Boring: The moment Lolopechka is unable to fight after Megicula takes over half of her body, Vanica switches from being excited and enthusiastic about fighting to a colder, dispassionate demeanor. She casually disregards Noelle when she thinks she's nothing special without Lolopechka's help, but becomes pleasantly surprised by her spirit and skill when she avoids her attacks and manages to impale her, taking Lolopechka hostage to motivate her into becoming a suitable opponent. Unbeknown to her though, this is because Lolopechka literally cannot use offensive magic attacks and a close glance reveals that Megicula was flipping the tables on her own.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about Vanica's enmity with Noelle without mentioning that she had cursed her mother Acier, which led to her death.
  • Wicked Heart Symbol: A heart-like symbol appears on her torso when she uses Megicula's devil power at high percentages in spite of Vanica being a childish, psychotic Womanchild.
  • Wolverine Claws: She can form a giant claw of blood around her hand able to unleash slicing beams.
  • The Worf Effect: Subverted. The implication that she had defeated Lolopechka, the Heart Kingdom's strongest mage with the power of Undine, and fatally cursed Acier lend credence to Vanica being an incredibly strong mage. Although still very much powerful, her feats become a lot less impressive when readers learn that Lolopechka has no offensive magic and Gaja was essentially doing the attacking during their fight and she would be dogpiled and beaten without Megicula's intervention. Acier also nearly killed her, with Megicula fatally cursing her and Vanica having had to flee for her life, so she never did actually defeat her.
  • Would Hurt a Child: She had no qualms taking a young Nozel and baby Noelle hostage.
  • You Fight Like a Cow: Mocks Rill and Charlotte's magics when their spells don't impress her, stating that she wished she had fought Yami and Asta instead. She then goes on to mock Yami for being captured by Zenon, angering Charlotte.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness:
    • After capturing Lolopechka, she states that she doesn't need her Dark Disciples anymore. Vanica uses her Curse-Warding Magic to detonate the devil power she gave her Dark Disciples, turning them into bombs to their utter fear.
    • Vanica herself ends up on the receiving end of this trope when Megicula decides to sacrifice her in order to manifest into the human world.

Voiced by: Tatsuhisa Suzuki (Japanese) Zeno Robinson (English)

Debut: Chapter 227 (Manga), Episode 129 (Anime)

Magic Attribute: Bone + Spatial

"In the face of overwhelming power... sentiment and vengefulness are meaningless. Everything is."

One of the rulers of the Spade Kingdom and a member of the Dark Triad. He is the younger brother of Dante and Vanica, and devil host of the supreme devil Beelzebub. Rational and ruthless, Zenon is much more powerful than the Magic Knight Captains and has enough power to easily overwhelm the army of the Diamond Kingdom alone.

He uses two types of magic, the devil Beelzebub's Spatial Magic to create portals and control spaces and his innate Bone Magic, sprouting countless sharpened bones from his body to skewer enemies.

  • Achilles' Heel: After becoming a devil, his is his heart, regenerating fast from any other body part hit and Yuno trying to aim for it with his Star Magic. Yuno ends up slicing through it with his Saint Spirit of Zephyr.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: After getting his heart destroyed by Yuno, Zenon asks him what made them different. Telling him that he hasn't completed his vow with Asta yet, Zenon reminisces about his own with Allen as he disintegrates away.
  • Alliterative Name: Zenon Zogratis.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Flashbacks show that, as a child, he was bullied by other kids for his creepy bone magic with Allen saving him, beginning their friendship and rivalry.
  • Always Someone Better: To even Langris, who's surprised that he can even cast his huge Spatial Mana Domination without even moving. Zenon himself even tells Langris that if he didn't exist he'd be the ultimate spatial mage.
  • Ambition Is Evil: After killing Allen to defeat the devil, he gained the view that power is everything and that weak people like him should be discarded. His desire to become stronger led him to take up his older brother's offer and goal of creating a country of undying bodies, turning him into an emotionless, ruthless devil host.
  • Anti-Villain: Ultimately turns out to be this. He was once similar to Yuno with a desire to protect the kingdom as the Mage Defense Force's leader. Killing his best friend and rival to defeat a devil that would've endangered the kingdom mentally broke him, valuing power and turning to his oldest brother to become a devil host. His goal turns out to be for what he sees to be the prosperity of Spade, temporarily killing the weak and remaking them into undying bodies using the power of devils.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Makes sense considering how much Zenon values power over emotion and determination. He breaks his stoicism to tell Yuno that he isn't weak, but himself is simply far stronger than him during their first fight, complete with a Slasher Smile, before stabbing and leaving him for dead. During the fight with Yuno and Langris, he states that he's the ultimate spatial mage and that they'll die without making him take a single step before Yuno shows off how much stronger he's gotten.
  • Badass Boast: He says this to Yuno of all people while curb-stomping him with using just 55% of his devil's power:
Zenon: You aren't weak...I'm simply far stronger. All for the benefit of the Spade Kingdom!
  • Bad Boss: Downplayed. He doesn't kill his Dark Disciples for fun unlike Vanica, but he also doesn't so much as bat an eye when his they're left mortally wounded, only noting that this shows that there's no point in bringing anyone who isn't over 50% devil power.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: The whole Heart Kingdom Joint Struggle arc is one for the Dark Triad, but especially for him. He and his Dark Disciples easily kill half of the Golden Dawn, beat Yuno and captured Vangeance in Clover Kingdom, then caught Yami on his way back after Dante was beaten. Had Asta and Yami manage to beat him there instead, the Qliphoth Advent Ritual would fail to even begin, and Lolopechka was just something Vanica captured to use against Noelle later on.
  • Bad with the Bone: He uses Bone Magic, generating massive amounts of bones from his body to brutally stab enemies. He can even shape his bones to wield like a blade.
  • Ballistic Bone: He can shoot the sharpened bones formed from his magic as projectiles.
  • Baritone of Strength: He has a deep voice in the anime, and is a member of the Dark Triad who's one of the strongest mages in the story.
  • Big Brother Worship: He was shown as a child to have respected his oldest brother Lucius, addressing him as "big brother". He turned to him to gain more power as a devil host after realizing the importance of power, as he had originally wanted for Zenon.
  • Big Ego, Hidden Depths: As emotionless as he is, Zenon takes a lot of pride in his power and being the ultimate spatial mage, espousing an ideology that only the strong are worthy and that the weak should die. Turns out that he began to believe this philosophy to cope with killing his best friend to defeat a devil that would've endangered his country.
  • Blood Knight: Despite appearing very emotionless and professional, he shows this side with a vicious grin when he mercilessly attacks Yuno. That said, unlike his siblings, who love fighting strong opponents to the point of prolonging battles or letting them live, he would rather kill possible threats.
  • Blue Is Heroic:
    • Inverted, having dark blue in his colour scheme and being a No-Nonsense Nemesis, in contrast to his siblings occasional bouts of Laughably Evil.
    • Played straight in the past, where he worked as a Magic Knight of the Spade Kingdom and genuinely wished to make the world a better place.
  • Body Motifs: Bones, matching the magic he wields and reflecting his nature as the most (outwardly) stable and cold of his siblings.
  • Broken Ace: Was noted as a child by their oldest brother to have a greater aptitude than even Dante and Vanica for being a devil host, and a genius with his Bone Magic by the time he was admitted to the Mage Defense Force. However, having to kill his best friend Allen to kill a devil for the good of the Spade Kingdom crushed Zenon, with the event leading him to believe that power is absolute and emotions and tenacity are meaningless without it. This caused him to seek power from his oldest brother by becoming a devil host, turning him into the emotionless Social Darwinist in the present.
  • Broken Tears: The normally stoic Zenon cried immense tears after killing his friend Allen, firing his magic through him to kill a devil which would have killed them all and the nearby town at the very least if he didn't defeat it. Doing so caused him to believe power to be everything and seek his oldest brother, who he had initially turned down, to gain more power by becoming a devil host.
  • Character Death: Dies after getting his devil heart sliced through by Yuno, remembering his vow with Allen as his body disintegrates.
  • Chekhov's Skill: When fighting Yuno, he briefly shows his devil's power, enclosing them in a spatial cube. He uses his Spatial Magic later on to use a portal to save Dante and capture Yami.
  • Childhood Friends: With Allen, who had saved Zenon from bullies as a child and formed a rivalry and friendship with him to become the commander in chief of the Mage Defense Force that day. Flashbacks show that they trained and joined the force together. Sadly, their friendship ended when Zenon killed him to kill a devil that would have destroyed Spade.
  • Co-Dragons: With Vanica to Dante, though technically they are in Big Bad Duumvirate, but Zenon and Vanica are just members of the Dark Triad, while Dante is the overall leader.
  • Combat Pragmatist: He captures Yami with his Bone Magic right after arriving by portal. Noticing an exhausted Asta's devil arm, he immediately tries to kill him and would have if not for Finral's Spatial Magic.
  • Combat Tentacles: After the gate to the Qliphoth is opened, while using 100% of his devil power Zenon can sprout bladed, spiny tendrils to attack from a distance.
  • Creepy Monotone: Zenon speaks with a calm, quiet voice to fit with his stoicism and mercilessness.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • His first appearance was defeating the Diamond Kingdom's army including its two Shining Generals by himself.
    • He effortlessly defeats Alecdora and then Vangeance offscreen. After invoking 55% of his devil's power, he easily defeats Yuno even after he merges with Sylph to use Spirit Dive, then defeats the magic knights and kills half of them.
  • Death Glare: Gives one to Yuno as he makes a Heroic Second Wind through his new Star Magic and blasts through Zenon's body, wanting to crush him.
  • Deal with the Devil: Makes a deal with his devil Beelzebub after getting shot through by Yuno's Spirit of Euros arrow, getting a devil's heart in return for all of him, even his soul so long as Spade continues existing.
  • Demon of Human Origin: Makes a deal with Beelzebub to gain a devil's heart. As Langris points out, with a devil's power and heart he's essentially a devil.
  • Despair Event Horizon: He once shared his best friend Allen's dream of becoming the commander of Spade's Mage Defense Force in order to bring the Spade Kingdom to a brighter future. They formed a Friendly Rivalry, training and perfecting their respective magics with Zenon even refusing to become a devil host like his siblings. Unfortunately, it all fell down when the two of them were sent to investigate a dungeon and found a powerful devil inside who proved too much for them. Knowing that the devil would kill them and escape to wreck havoc on the Kingdom, Zenon was forced to stab the devil through Allen, killing both of them. The event convinced a now-broken Zenon that power is the only thing that matters and to destroy humanity and regenerate them in undying bodies, leading him to become a devil host and make a deal with Beelzebub.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Was quite surprised to see that Yuno is alive after defeating him and leaving him for dead impaled with his bone sword.
  • Domain Holder: Using Spatial Magic, Zenon takes full control of the mana within a space, able to even interfere with and block his opponent's spells' mana. Langris is surprised he can even cast a spell that huge without even moving.
  • Dragon Ascendant: After Dante, who is the leader of the Triad and the oldest of the three siblings, and Vanica are defeated, Zenon is the remaining member of the group who has to be defeated to stop the Tree of Qliphoth from growing further.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: The youngest of the Triad and the one who's had the least experience as a devil host, with his older brother Dante being ostensibly the group's leader. Despite this, he's much more competent and pragmatic than his older siblings, rescuing Dante, single handedly defeating the Magic Knights and killing half of them and capturing Yami along with Vangeance all by himself. He ends up being the last of the Triad needed to be defeated to stop the Qliphoth, and it's later revealed that he has more potential as a devil host than Dante and Vanica:
Zenon (to a defeated Dante while saving him): You said all that, and then you lost? You're hopeless.
  • The Dreaded: If Luck doesn't want to fight him out of fear, you know he is this. He terrifies Sylph, an ancient elemental spirit, when she sees him, with her urging Yuno to use Spirit Dive immediately.
  • Driven to Villainy: He comes from a family of devil hosts, with his oldest brother wanting Zenon to become one when he was a young child. However, he wanted to join the Mage Defense Force to protect the kingdom after befriending Allen and afterwards told his brother he wasn't interested in becoming a devil host. However, having to kill Allen to kill a devil that would have destroyed the kingdom caused Zenon to believe overwhelming power is everything and ask his brother to make him a devil host to become stronger.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Zenon appears a lot earlier than Dante and Vanica, at the end of the Elf Reincarnation Arc instead of at the start of the next arc like the other two. Also bonuses as an Establishing Character Moment since he's first seen completely annihilating the Diamond Kingdom's Mage Defense Force alone, showing that he's nothing short of bad news, especially when the Golden Dawn and Yami meets him.
  • Energetic and Soft-Spoken Duo: Like Asta and Yuno, Allen was the Energetic to Zenon's Soft-Spoken as best friends and rivals:
Allen: I'm not losing this time, Zenon!
Zenon: There's no winning or losing on missions, Allen.
Allen: Man, you're always so serious...
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • As cold and merciless as Zenon may be, he does love his brother Dante, holding his defeated body tenderly with his magic when he saves him from the Black Bulls. With concern, he asks Morris about Dante's progress in healing.
    • In his past he had a best friend and rival Allen. Having to kill him by firing his magic through him to kill a devil that would have endangered the Spade Kingdom mentally broke Zenon, complete with Broken Tears.
  • Evil Counterpart: His backstory shows that he looked near-identical to Yuno when he was young and was also the rival of a more energetic, idealistic individual in becoming the strongest mage in his country, in this case Allen, who looked just like Asta, for commander in chief of the Mage Defense Force, with the imagery and paneling almost exactly like a young Asta and Yuno's promise as children in the very first chapter. However, he killed Allen as he was fighting a devil in a dungeon to kill said devil. Said event mentally shattered Zenon and led him to value absolute power, leading him to take up his oldest brother's offer for him to become a devil-possessed.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: A callous member of the Dark Triad, whose goal is to bring devils into the living world and killing 90% of the continent in the process, and has a deep voice courtesy of Tatsuhisa Suzuki.
  • Evil Weapon: His Bone x Spatial Magic: Demon Sword Dainsleif. Its name comes from the mythical Nordic sword that causes a man's death every time it is bared.
  • Facial Markings:
    • He has a crossed-black mark on the left side of his face. It noticeably enlarges when using more of his devil's power.
    • Gains black lines through his eyes and a diamond-like mark on his forehead after becoming a devil.
  • Fallen Hero: Zenon dreamt of becoming the leader of the Mage Defense Force so that he could protect the Spade citizens from its civil wars and warring countries, and ended up joining its Division Four. Having to kill his best friend and rival Allen during a mission to defeat a devil put a stop to that dream and turned him into a cruel, emotionless Social Darwinist who believes that the weak like Allen should be discarded to cope with killing his friend, and retook his oldest brother's offer in making him into a devil host.
  • Foil:
    • To his sister Vanica.
    • To Langris. Both are powerful spatial mages who are very arrogant about their power, look down on peasants with low magic, and have ties to Yuno. But while Langris became less haughty over time and eventually learns to work with Yuno, who he had detested for his background, Zenon continues to disparage Yuno during their rematch in spite of the power he had shown during their first fight, with Zenon even having acknowledged him as a threat. Zenon himself is a superior spatial mage to Langris, who's surprised at his power, and Zenon states he would be the ultimate spatial mage if he didn't exist.
  • Four Is Death: Joined Division Four of the Mage Defense Force with Allen and is the fourth of the Zogratis siblings. He's responsible for the Golden Dawn massacre and killed his rival to defeat the devil that they were fighting against.
  • Friendly Rivalry: And a horrifically deconstructed mockery of Asta and Yuno's rivlary at that. He formed a rivalry and friendship with Allen after he saved Zenon from bullies and expressed his dream of becoming the commander of the Mage Defense Force to protect those in fear. As children, they trained together and later joined the force together. Sadly, it came to an end when Zenon sacrificed Allen to kill a powerful devil that would've endangered the kingdom, to Zenon's great anguish.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Went from a bullied child for his creepy magic mocked by his siblings to a soldier in the Mage Defense Force who wanted to protect the kingdom's citizens, to the host of a supreme Qliphoth devil who believes in the importance of power and that the weak should be culled after having had to kill his friend and rival Allen to kill a devil and save the kingdom.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: Thanks to becoming a devil, he regenerates from having parts of his body erased, blasted through, and sliced through by non-Arcane and Saint Stage magic.
  • The Heavy: He does most of the Dark Triad's dirty work in the Heart Kingdom Joint Struggle arc, since Dante gets defeated by Asta and Yami when he attempts to capture the latter, and Vanica was slacking off to wreck havoc in the Heart Kingdom.
  • Hero Killer: He didn't kill them himself, but he did order the deaths of Hamon and Shiren. These two are comparatively minor compared to the likes of Yuno or Langris, but it's still very shocking to see named characters Killed Off for Real in a way that isn't Death by Origin Story. The only other case where a named character is killed is when Patry killed Julius, but unlike them he can undo his own death no problem.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Blue eyes and acts very cold and serious.
  • Identical Stranger: As a kid, Zenon looked a lot like Yuno when he was one. This also draws parallels to Allen's resemblance to Asta and their horrifically deconstructed version of Asta and Yuno's Friendly Rivalry.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: The end result for anyone attacked by his Bone Magic. He does this to Klaus, Letoile, and Yuno as well as countless other members of Golden Dawn. He can also do this non-fatally to bind targets in his bones.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Viz originally uses "Zeno" but later changes his name to "Zenon", which fits closer with the Japanese romanization of his name.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Unlike Dante and Vanica who are dangerous sadists and sociopaths and just went along with the Qliphoth Tree Ritual for the sake of wanton destruction, Zenon is a tragic Well-Intentioned Extremist who legitimately wants to fulfill Lucius's plan to destroy and remake humanity for a peaceful Spade Kingdom.
  • Looks Like Cesare: He has a pale complexion, messy black hair, and the lighting tends to have shadows under his eyes.
  • Marked Change: The cross mark on his face enlarges when he uses higher percentages of his devil's power.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Zenon is derived from "Zeus", the king of the gods in Greek mythology. He shapes up to be the Arch-Enemy of Yuno, whose name is based of Juno, the Roman name of Zeus's wife Hera.
    • His name is also the same as the demon king from Devilman, and he's the host of the powerful devil Beelzebub.
  • Messy Hair: He has messy black hair not dissimilar to Yuno's.
  • Mirror Character: Zenon and Yuno are both cold, speak little, and have confidence in their power, preferring to settle things fast with their magics. While Yuno is selfless and cares for his squad, Zenon is merciless and derides his Dark Disciples for being weak. He physically resembles Yuno and his backstory shows that he is a dark counterpart to him, beginning as a quiet young boy who befriended and became rivals with Allen, who is almost identical to Asta, in becoming commander in chief of the Mage Defense Force. In contrast to Yuno, who's always had the utmost faith in Asta, Zenon killed Allen by using him as a decoy to kill a devil. This led him to become The Social Darwinist, believing that the weak like Allen should be discarded, and a devil host to gain more power. Zenon even points out that if Yuno sacrificed Langris to pierce his heart, like how Zenon had sacrificed Allen, instead of diverting it slightly to avoid hitting him he would have won. Their battle becomes a clash of ideologies, each wanting to prove that the choices they made were right.
Yuno and Zenon: I'm the one who's right. I'm the one who will win!!
  • Multi-Directional Barrage: He can create so many bones with his magic that there's no space to avoid them, forcing Yuno to try and cut through them.
  • Mythical Motifs: Devils, just like the rest of his siblings. His Devil Union form gives him four horns, bat like wings, needle sharp teeth on top of a forked tail and claws. [[spoiler:Taken up a notch after trading his heart to ''become'' a devil himself.
  • Nerves of Steel: Almost perpetually calm and stoic at all times, whether it be impaling enemies with his bones or talking down on others. Even with the rare times where he expresses shock, Zenon goes back to his collected expression almost immediately afterwards.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Wanted to lead the Mage Defense Force to protect the Spade Kingdom's citizens after meeting Allen, instead of becoming a devil host as his oldest brother wanted. Fatally stabbing through Allen to kill a devil that would have threatened the country kicked off his Start of Darkness, believing that power is what matters most and becoming a devil host to obtain it and create a country of undying bodies.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: When arriving at the Golden Dawn HQ, he tells his Dark Disciples to kill everyone aside from Vangeance. After defeating Yuno, he immediately leaves with a captured Vangeance and Yuno is left impaled and dying. Right after he arrives at the scene, Zenon rescues a defeated Dante and ensnares Yami with his magic. Noticing Asta's devil arm, he immediately tries to kill him. When the Black Bulls try to stop him, he leaves with a captured Yami to not waste anymore time.
  • No-Sell: He's by-far a much stronger spatial mage than even Langris, using his Absolute Space to easily stop his spatial spheres in cubes, and using his Spatial Mana Domination to dissipate his Archangel's Destruction without even moving.
  • Not So Stoic:
    • He breaks his emotionlessness when he wickedly smiles at Yuno, telling him that he's simply far stronger before viciously defeating him.
    • He cried profuse Broken Tears after he took the chance and killed a devil and his friend Allen in the process.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Zenon's reaction when Yuno overrides his Spatial Mana Domination and breaks through his bony defense to blow a hole in his torso. Again when his Spirit of Euros pierces a hole through his chest while in 100% devil power.
    • Now as a devil, he has a subdued but noticeable one when learning that Yuno is the son of the royal family after he gains his Star Magic.
    • Has this reaction as he reads the mechanism of Yuno's Star Magic: Conjunction spell, soon realizing that he had regenerated a star to teleport behind him and slice his devil heart.
  • One-Man Army: His debut has him alone standing over hundreds of defeated Diamond Kingdom soldiers, including two of their Shining Generals. When he attacks the Golden Dawn he easily defeats countless members without even exerting his full devil power.
  • One-Winged Angel:
    • After the gate to the Qliphoth is opened, he can use 100% of his devil power, covering his body in dark energy and gaining a skeletal armor, wings, helm that covers the left half of his face, and tail. It increases his bones' regeneration and attack power after he was being battered by Yuno at 55% and 70%.
    • Becomes a devil after making a deal with Beelzebub, covering most of his body in black fur and gaining another pair of horns and antlers.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Constantly seen with a stoic, serious face, with rare instances of a Slasher Smile or expression of shock. He began to disregard the meaning of emotion and tenacity in the face of power after killing Allen.
  • Personality Powers: After fatally impaling his weaker friend and rival Allen to kill a devil, he came to believe that power is absolute and emotions such as tenacity are worthless in the face of it. To gain more power he became the devil host of Beelzebub, the devil of space, gaining Spatial Magic to cast Spatial Mana Domination, forming an Absolute Space that makes it so that weaker mages can't even maintain their magic within it. His Spatial Magic itself represents his ideology of absolute power overruling the weak.
  • Powers Do the Fighting: His Bone Magic sprouts countless, sharpened bones from his body that can reach long distances and defend him. And his Spatial Magic takes full control of the mana in a space to block enemy spells without Zenon even moving to cast such a huge spell. It's because of this that he stays in one spot in battle, hands in his pockets, and boasts to Yuno and Langris that they'll die before even making him move one step.
  • The Rival: Was the rival to Allen in becoming the commander of the Spade's Mage Defense Force. However, said rivalry ended in tragedy when Zenon stabbed through Allen to kill a devil.
  • Rival Turned Evil: An interesting one in which Zenon became one because of his friend's death. He was the rival of Allen in becoming the Mage Defense Force's commander, but killed him to stop a powerful devil for the good of his country. Zenon became evil when he began believing his Might Makes Right ideology and sought out his oldest brother for more power as a devil host, with the goal of temporarily destroying humanity and remaking them into immortals using the power of devils.
  • Sadistic Choice: When having to fight a devil in a dungeon, he had to choose between firing his magic through Allen to kill him and the devil, or not do it and risk everyone there dying, and at the very least the residents of a nearby town dying with the damage spreading to the rest of the kingdom. To his utter sadness, he chooses to kill his friend Allen to kill the devil.
  • Shadow Archetype: Like Yuno, Zenon is aloof, cold, and speaks very little. Unlike Yuno, who became that way to grow out of his crybaby past and deeply cares for his comrades, Zenon takes it to a merciless degree, coldly insulting defeated enemies, killing any threats, and desiring to massacre innocent civilians because he doesn't deem the weak worthy to live. Zenon even physically resembles Yuno, having messy black hair like him as well as similar facial features. His backstory shows that he looked almost identical to Yuno as a child and became a darker counterpart to him, beginning as a quiet young boy who befriended and became rivals with Allen, who looks nigh-identical to Asta, in becoming commander in chief of the Mage Defense Force. Unlike Yuno, who has always had complete faith in Asta, Zenon killed a devil along with Allen himself by firing while he was fighting it. This led him to adopt his The Social Darwinist ideology to cope with his act and ask his eldest brother to make him a devil host when he had refused at first.
  • Shout-Out: He's a high-ranking devil user and shares the same name as the demon king from Devilman.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: With his older sister Vanica. Vanica is an impulsive, moody woman whose actions are motivated out of a desire to have bloody battles, while Zenon is a cold, rational man who loyally carries out his duties for the Spade Kingdom.
  • Sinister Geometry: A villainous devil host who later turns into a devil, and his Spatial Magic creates cubes that dominate and negate weaker magic within them.
  • Skeletons in the Coat Closet: After the gate to the Qliphoth is opened, Zenon can use 100% of his devil power, gaining a skeletal white armor with bone wings and horns.
  • Slasher Smile:
    • He breaks his cold expression to put on a malicious grin when he releases 55% of his devil's power, shortly before he brutally defeats Yuno.
    • Now a devil, he has a nightmarish smile as he thinks that he's about to win and kill Yuno.
  • Smug Super: He's much more low-key about it given he's much less emotional than his siblings, but he's still very confident in his power, boasting that he's the ultimate spatial mage to Langris and telling him he's foolish for accompanying Yuno who had already been defeated before. He tells them that they'll die without making him take a single step.
  • The Social Darwinist: When the Spade Kingdom Resistance show themselves to the Dark Triad as a diversion for the Clover Kingdom's assault force, he lets loose a legendary, ancient demon on them. Zenon states he had planned on using it to exterminate the people in Castle Town, proclaiming that only the strong are the citizens of the Spade Kingdom. His flashback shows that he adopted this ideology after murdering his friend and rival Allen, who was too weak to do anything significant against the devil, by taking up an opening he had made while fighting it, killing them both. It's later revealed that his oldest brother instilled in him the plan to temporarily destroy the weak and regenerate them into undying bodies, creating a Spade Kingdom without fear of death.
"Without power, neither emotions nor tenacity mean a thing. The weak should be discarded. Overwhelming power is everything."
  • Space Master: As the host of Beelzebub, the devil of space, he has Spatial Magic. He first uses it against Yuno, enclosing them in a spatial cube. He can use it to form portals to travel long distances and take control of the mana within a space, blocking and interfering with his enemies' spells.
  • Spikes of Doom: His spell "Eternal Fangs" sprouts countless bones from his body to impale enemies.
  • Spikes of Villainy: He definitely counts with the bones that jut out from him thanks to his magic.
  • The Spock: Zenon is the most rational and merciless of the Dark Triad, and wholly focused on completing their mission. Although Dante and Vanica indulge in their sadistic desires and act out of their pride or childishness, Zenon is willing to defeat and kill his enemies as efficiently as possible so that they won't be problems in the future.
  • Start of Darkness: Zenon was a Spade soldier who wanted to serve his country to protect its people, and turned down his oldest brother's desire to turn him into a devil host. However, during a mission that went wrong he had to fatally stab through his friend Allen to kill the devil, which would have threatened the kingdom if he didn't stop it then. To deal with his act of betrayal, Zenon began to accept the ideology that overwhelming power is absolute and the weak like Allen should be discarded. To gain further power, he turned back to his brother and became a devil host and gain the goal of remaking the weak of humanity into immortals with the power of devils, leading Zenon to become the villain he is now.
  • Stationary Boss: As Yuno puts it, Zenon uses his bones as an absolute defense with their regenerative speed and overwhelming hardiness, keeping most physical attacks from getting through and Zenon himself doesn't even need to move a single step while he uses his countless bones to stab enemies.
  • The Stoic: He doesn't talk much and rarely emotes which starkly contrasts with his violence.
  • Straw Nihilist: Believes emotions and determination are meaningless without overwhelming power. He came to believe this as a way of coping with fatally impaling his best friend and rival, the emotional, tenacious Allen, to kill the devil they were fighting against, deeming Allen as weak for being unable to do anything against it and espousing that the weak like him should be culled.
  • Strong and Skilled: Zenon might not be a full-blown powerhouse like Dante, but he's still a very powerful devil host and can hold fights on his own. What makes him truly qualify is that he can organize an attack very well. He first distracts a large portion of the Golden Dawn with his minions, then goes straight into defeating Vangeance one-on-one and abducting him. Dante gets defeated when trying to abduct Yami, but the Qliphoth Tree Plan still went off without a hitch because he intervened just when the Black Bulls were easy pickings from the confrontation prior.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Zenon turn out to be a dead-ringer for his oldest brother Lucius.
  • Stronger Sibling: Despite Zenon lacking the obsession in wanton cruelty of Dante and Vanica, he makes up for this by being way more competent and powerful than them, decimating half of the Golden Dawn and capturing Yami and Vangeance all by himself. Compare this to Dante, the supposed strongest member was beaten and Vanica would otherwise be beaten without Megicula intervening on the latter's own volition. In their rematch, Zenon was also the only one who was killed ceremoniously in an extended one-on-one fight with Yuno instead of receiving a Fate Worse than Death after a few chapters.
  • Superpower Lottery: Zenon's Spatial Magic lets him take full control of mana within a space to interfere with and block the mana in his opponents' spells, making them unable to even maintain their magic. It's for this reason that he considers himself the ultimate spatial mage. Combined with his powerful Bone Magic, with overwhelming hardiness and regeneration speed, he has an absolute defense that keeps most physical attacks from even touching him.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: He released the legendary ancient demon of the Spade Kingdom on Castle Town to eradicate the Spade Kingdom resistance, having planned to kill the weak citizens anyway. Mereoleona prevents that from happening.
  • Thinking Up Portals: He can use his devil's Spatial Magic to form dark portals to move to different locations. By following dregs of mana, he uses it to save a defeated Dante and capture Yami.
  • Token Good Teammate: Downplayed. He's still as cruel as his other sublings, but unlike Dante and Vanica who revel in mass murder and wanton cruelty for entertainment, Zenon legitimately believed that his actions were for the Spade Kingdom's greater good, and he does have a tragic background story that sheds depth into his actions.
  • Took a Level in Cynic: Went from a soldier in the Mage Defense Force who wanted to become its commander in chief so that he could protect his country and its people from rebellions and invading neighbors to a merciless devil host who believes that emotions like tenacity are meaningless without any power. He came to espouse a more cynical ideology after sacrificing his best friend Allen, whose determination led him to charge in despite being much weaker, to kill the powerful devil that they were fighting.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Was a child, and later adult, who became a soldier to protect his people as commander of the Mage Defense Force, sharing his dream with Allen. After seemingly having no choice but to defeat a powerful devil by killing Allen, he believed the ideal that power is what's most important and that the weak are worthless after murdering his best friend. Over a decade later, he's become a stoic, ruthless devil host.
  • Torso with a View: Gets a hole blown through his torso by Yuno's Spirit of Boreas. He regenerates from it when entering his 100% devil power form. He later gets a hole through his chest courtesy of Yuno's Spirit of Euros, pushing him to make a deal with Beelzebub. It gets healed up after gaining a devil's heart.
  • Tragic Bromance: Was friends with Allen ever since he saved Zenon from bullies as children and they became rivals for the goal of commander of the Mage Defense Force. Their bromance ended when Zenon had to kill Allen by using him as a decoy to kill a devil that would have endangered the Spade Kingdom, turning him into The Social Darwinist and later devil host.
  • Trauma Button: After getting a hole pierced through his chest by the wind mage Yuno, Zenon remembers his past, which reveals that he had to kill a powerful wind devil that would've endangered Spade by fatally stabbing through his best friend Allen, causing Zenon immense grief and him to adopt his ideology of Might Makes Right. Getting injured in a way reminding him of this tragic event leads Zenon to make a deal with Beelzebub.
  • Undying Loyalty: He has a fierce loyalty to his home kingdom of Spade, directly attacking the Golden Dawn base to capture Vangeance and proclaiming that it's "all for the benefit of the Spade Kingdom" before he brutally defeats Yuno. His past reveals that he had dreamt of becoming commander in chief of the Mage Defense Force to protect the kingdom's residents. After killing Allen he took up his oldest brother's goal to temporarily kill the weak and remake them into undying bodies, creating a peaceful Spade without the fear of death. His contract with Beelzebub stipulates that so long as Spade survives he'll even give the devil his soul.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Was a quiet, yet kind-hearted child mocked by his siblings and bullied by other kids for his creepy magic. Meeting Allen led Zenon to share his dream of becoming the Mage Defense Force's commander to protect the country's people. However, having to kill Allen to save the kingdom from a devil mentally broke Zenon and caused him to believe in the importance of power, thinking that the weak like him should be culled and emotions are meaningless. This turned him into an emotionless, merciless villain who sought out more power as a devil host.
  • Villain Respect: Respect combined with disparagement before he brutally defeats Yuno in their first "fight":
"You aren't weak. I'm simply far stronger."
  • Villain Teleportation: As the host of his devil, he has powerful Spatial Magic that lets him form portals. He teleports to rescue Dante and capture Yami by following dregs of mana from their fight.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: Came to believe that emotions and tenacity are worthless without power when he killed his childhood friend and rival Allen, whose courage and resolve caused him to charge in despite being too weak to actually kill a devil, to defeat the devil. Which goes to explain why Zenon is so emotionless and merciless in the present. He disparages Yuno for diverting his arrow to avoid hitting Langris, missing his heart and victory before brutalizing him after becoming a devil.
  • White Sheep: Was actually the White Sheep of the Zogratis siblings, with his older brother wanting him to become a devil host and Zenon abandoning that calling to join the Mage Defense Force for the benefit of the Spade citizens. That fell through after Allen's death broke him and convinced Zenon that power is everything, leading him to become a devil host anyways.
  • Why Won't You Die?: To Langris after becoming a devil:
"You're still standing in my way? You can't even die right."
  • "World's Best" Character: Zenon calls himself the ultimate spatial mage, telling Langris that he would be so had he not existed, and he has the power to back it up. He can cast a huge spatial spell to fully control the mana in a surrounding space, forming spatial cubes to entrap enemy spells and interfering with their mana, all without even moving. Langris himself has all his spells trapped or dispelled by Zenon, and even after using Mana Zone can only form a small space for himself within Zenon's Absolute Space.
  • Youngest Child Wins: The youngest of the Zogratis siblings and was stated by his oldest brother Lucius to be like him in having great potential as a devil host, greater than his older siblings Dante and Vanica. He chose to reach that potential after refusing at first following his killing of Allen.
  • You Can't Thwart Stage One: The magic knights completely fail to stop him from capturing both Yami and Vangenance to initiate the Qliphoth Tree Advent ritual.

The Dark Disciples

    In General
  • Body Motifs: All of Vanica's subordinates have magic associated with body parts.
  • Dark Is Evil: Called the Dark Disciples and use the devil power of their very evil masters, whom them are loyal to and carry out their orders.
  • Horned Humanoid: Like the Dark Triad, as they use more devil power they gain wegs on their head.
  • Informed Attribute: Vanica's Dark Disciples are by all means Stage Zero mages, but they are easily crushed one-on-one by people who usually don't even win fights alone like Mimosa or Leopold. Compare this to those deployed by Zenon, who managed to kill two semi-minor Golden Dawn members and required Yuno to overpower them.
  • Mythical Motifs: Like their masters, devils, with those under Vaniva eventually gaining small horns and small wings on their backs.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Using more devil power gives some of them small black demon wings.
  • Lovecraftian Superpower: Like their master Vanica, all of her Dark Disciples have a magic involving modifying a body part. Svenkin has skin magic, Sivoir has eye magic, Halbet has hair magic, Robero Ringert has tongue magic and Hischer Ongg has nail magic.
  • Resurrective Immortality: Thanks to Vanica's curse power, her Dark Disciples come back to life each time they die unless she's defeated.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: They all have colorful personalities and serve the Dark Triad to fight against the Magic Knights. Unlike the Dark Triad, who fight the main characters Asta, Yuno, and Noelle, the Dark Disciples mostly face off against supporting characters like Klaus, Luck, Charmy, Leopold, Mimosa, and Gaja.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: They aren't that well trained in predicting or countering enemy moves, they're just so stupidly strong that they get the job done with brute force. This makes them weak to the Magic Knight's quick thinking.
  • Why Am I Ticking?: All of Vanica's Dark Disciples expresses shock as Vanica turns them into curse bombs by detonating the devil power she gave them.
  • Winged Humanoid: They gain small demonic wings whenever expending devil power.
  • The Worf Effect: They're both on the receiving and delivering end of this, despite being stage 0 mages reinforced with a significant portion of the Dark Triad's devil powers. Godroc and Migusteau managed to kill half of the Golden Dawn by themselves, but ends up being killed quickly as soon as Yuno steps in. Vanica's ones beat four Heart Kingdom spirit guardians but were competely outclassed and outmatched by Clover Kingdom's Magic Knights (and not even the strongest ones to boot). Vanica herself then proceeds to kill all of them.

But whereas Luck has since grown to fight for others and is a Lightning Bruiser that favour mobility and offense, Svenkin is one hundred percent devoted to impressing Vanica (with no regard for others) and typically remains stationary while his magic blocks any incoming attacks.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: He get pierced by Luck's True Lightning Magic. He shortly gets resurrected thanks to Vanica's curse.
  • Logical Weakness: His Skin Magic adjusts itself to cancel out magic attributes. However, True Magics create the real element itself as opposed to being made of mana. Luck using True Lightning Magic to become a piercing lightning bolt breaks through his defense and defeats him.
  • Purple Is Powerful: When manifesting it's full power, his magic turns purple and proves enough to give Luck a challenge.

  • The Fighting Narcissist: While fighting Charmy, she's constantly talking about how beautiful she is. After being revived by Vanica's curse, she's enraged at Charmy for having ruined her hair.
  • Foil: To Charmy, who she fights in the Heart Kingdom. Charmy, by then, has become fat, with Halbet being a thin woman who mocks her for being an unsightly fatty. Halbet thinks consuming food is idiotic for making you fat and ugly. Charmy, stating this after beating her up, believes true beauty comes from proper nutrition and meals.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: While she derides Charmy for being fat, she ends up being even bigger than Charmy when Vanica detonates the devil power she gave her.
