The distant homeland of Yami Sukehiro currently ruled by the shogun Ryudo Ryuya.

    open/close all folders

    In General
  • Ironic Name: Despite being called the Land of the Sun the country always has a thin layer of clouds. That is until Asta splits the sky with his Zetten.
  • Wutai: As Yami's homeland, the country is heavily based on feudal Japan with shoguns, samurai, and ninja. People use ki, and magic is called "yojutsu" and instead of grimoires mages use scrolls. And unlike the Clover Kingdom like in Japan people are generally referred to by their family names.

    Ryudo Ryuya

Ryudo Ryuya

Debut: Chapter 336 (Manga)

Yojutsu Attribute: None

The current Shogun of the Land of the Sun and Yami's childhood friend. Asta meets him after seemingly being "killed" by Lucius and Sister Lily. His Tengentsu lets his right eye see everything happening during any moment.

  • Alliterative Name: Ryudo Ryuya.
  • Big Good: With Julius revealed to be a Split Personality of Lucius and subsumed by him when his Evil Plan finally goes into motion, Ryuya steps in as the big guiding influence for the heroes to counter-attack his machinations, using his Magical Eye to step in at the right moment to discreetly save Asta without Lucius' knowledge and train him to become strong enough to counter Lucius' overwhelming might.
  • Childhood Friends: He was one to Yami. They haven't seen each other since Yami was thirteen years old, however.
  • Citywide Evacuation: Orders one of these when three Paladins attack the Land of the Sun under Lucius's orders. It's for a good reason considering anyone who gets killed by Lucius's Paladins can and will be resurrected and used against the country, meaning that if he didn't order an evacuation, the Paladins will inevitably cause collateral damage and turn everyone they killed against the Land of the Sun.
  • De-power: In contrast to Asta, he wasn't born without magic/Yoryoku, and was actually powerful enough with his inborn ability to rival Yosuga, the strongest of the Ryuzen Seven. He willingly became an Un-Sorcerer as the price necessary to obtain the All-Seeing eye and use its abilities to find a believed-extinct plant necessary to curse a plague ravaging the lands. Because he didn't hesitate to sacrifice his strength for others, Yosuga has no issues nominating him as the Shogun, when his Yoryoku would have made him a shoe-in otherwise.
  • Discard and Draw: To find the special herb that would cure the plague ravaging the country, Ryuya sacrificed his incredible yojutsu power to gain the Tengentsu, the all-seeing eye that lets him see anything and everything going on during the present moment.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: The iris of his Tengentsu has a circle of nine magatamas surrounding the pupil. Further circles of magatamas surround his eye when he removes his eyepatch to use its power.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Wears it to cover up his Magical Eye.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Was this to Yosuga in their youth due being to powerful young lords of neighboring domains, competing to see who'd be best fit to be shogun. That is until Ryuya sacrificed all his yojutsu to gain the Tengentsu to cure a raging plague.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Non-lethal example. In the past, there was a plague that ravaged Koshu and Goshu, and there was no cure to it bar a plant thought to be extinct. To find any remains of it, Yosuga and Ryuya went to obtain the All-Seeing Eye, though its user has to sacrifice all of their Yoryoku to use it. Yosuga is the strongest warrior of the Land of the Rising Sun and is thus unwilling to sacrifice his, so Ryuya did it in his place instead, causing him to lose all of his mana.
  • In-Series Nickname: He tells Asta that he can call just call him "Ryu" for short.
  • Loved by All: Beloved by the Land of the Sun citizens for uniting the country. The Ryuzen Seven are motivated to slay the five-headed dragon because of his belief that they can accomplish it.
  • Magical Eye: His right eye the Tengentsu is able to "see stuff", including the future and past. This enables him to uniquely counter Lucius' Multiple-Choice Future ability through his Time Master magic, able to see multiple timelines to plan his complete victory against the Clover Knights, whilst Ryuya can also see enough about events to step in and save Asta after Lucius apparently killed him, training him in secret to return strong enough to interfere with Lucius' plans without the latter's knowledge of his survival. He gained it by paying all of his Yoryoku to find a presumably extinct cure for a local plague.
  • Meaningful Name: "Ryudo" means "dragon head" and Ryuya means "wide/spanning dragon".
  • Mythical Motifs: Dragons. His surname means "dragon head" and given name means "wide/spanning dragon", and his backstory has him as a dragon to Yosuga's tiger. He's the shogun of the Land of the Sun and formerly one of its strongest mages now with the all-seeing eye Tengentsu, going with Japanese symbolism of dragons as powerful and wise guardians. The Volume 35 cover even features him alongside a dragon meant to represent him.
  • Non-Action Guy: Invoked. He has no magic and relies on being able of making sound political decisiona and sending his Ryuzen Seven to do most of the combat in his place. In reality, he put himself in this position because he paid all of his magic for the All-Seeing Eye to solve a local plague.
  • Red Is Heroic: As the Land of the Sun's shogun he serves as his country's protector in leading the Ryuzen Seven, and has a red eye and wears a red kimono.
  • Samurai Ponytail: His hair is tied into a messy one and he's the Land of the Sun's shogun.
  • Secret-Keeper: Knows that Ichika slaughtered the Yami clan after being drugged, but decided to not tell her about it to not make it even more painful for her.
  • Seers: Is able to see everything happening at any given moment with his Magical Eye, telling Asta that Lucius won't make a move anytime soon and moving a little girl and her older sister to a spot safe from the bandits that attack right after.
  • Spanner in the Works: An intentional example, as he uses his Seers ability to step in at a precise moment when Lucius thinks Asta has been killed to rescue him without his knowledge and then train him in the fighting style of the Land of the Sun so Asta will be better equipped for a rematch. Lucius' ability to use his Time Magic to view multiple future outcomes leads him to believe that he's foreseen every outcome to the upcoming battle with the magic knights, but Ryuya's own ability to perceive events apparently allows him to counter this, and as he's been absent from events within the kingdom, Lucius is completely unaware of his existence.
  • The Strategist: For the Ryuzen Seven thanks to his all-seeing eye, telling them about the Paladins' yojutsu and to clear out the people first before battle to avoid them dying and being turned into Paladins.
  • Tiger Versus Dragon: Was the Dragon to Yosuga's Tiger when they were younger as rivals and heirs of nearby regions. After Ryuya acquired the Tengentsu at the cost of losing all his yoryoku while Yosuga was unwilling to make that sacrifice, Yosuga initially resented Ryuya for giving up on being his rival but grew to appreciate how much Ryuya bettered the Land of the Sun despite his lack of yoryoku, supporting Ryuya as the next shogun and choosing to serve under him as one of the Ryuzen Seven.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: He became beloved and admired by many for helping people throughout the Land of the Sun, with his popularity and achievements making him chosen to be Shogun in spite of having lost all of his yojutsu.
  • Un-Sorcerer: Like Asta, he has no yoryoku (magic power), but because he sacrificed all of them for his All-Seeing Eye. Despite this, it allows him to perceive events happening in the present or in the future, allowing him to make informed choices when leading his country.

    Mikuriya Fumito

Mikuriya Fumito

Debut: Chapter 339 (Manga)

Yojutsu Attribute: Water

A Recovery Yojutsu genius and friend of Ryuya.

  • Heal It with Water: A recovery yojutsu genius who heals using large goldfish made of water.
  • Nice Guy: He's very kind, happily healing and cooking for others.
  • Supreme Chef: Ryuya calls him a genius in cooking on top of healing, with Asta complimenting his food. He even cooks the five-headed dragon after it's slayed.

Ryuzen Seven

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryuzen_seven.png

Seven powerful mages under the Shogun Ryudo Ryuya who serve as the guardians of the Land of the Sun.

  • Badass Crew: The Land of the Sun's strongest mages, with even Paladin Lily calling them amazing when they slay the five-headed dragon.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: The country's strongest warriors include an overtly serious ninja, loud, pervy monk, gaudy gyaru girl, and timid mess who becomes a bloodthirsty battle maniac when she unsheathes her sword.
Ryuya (to Asta): Fun people, ain't they?
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Quite a few of them get easily drunk at the celebration party.
  • Ki Manipulation: The Ryuzen Seven are one of the few people in the Land of the Sun who've mastered the technique Zetten, releasing ki with the precision to release the yoryoku in their bodies at different amounts to produce an explosive amount of power. Asta compares it to Mana Skin.
  • Mythical Motifs:
    • Oni for Ichika. As a member of the Yami clan she's a descendant of assassins known as Kijin, coming from the name of oni in Japanese Mythology so powerful and violent that they are considered demon gods, and the Yami Clan's strongest fighter had the title of Demon-God. In her Dark Yojutsu: Dark-Cloaked Black Warrior she wears an oni mask covering her mouth. Ginnojomorifuyu even calls her an ogre.
    • Kitsune for Ginnojomorifuyu. Her spell Silver Fox in Blood-Dyed Robes turns her into a kitsune, who often had silver fur and were hunted for their sacred blood. They were often shapeshifting tricksters, fitting with her abrupt change from timid and meek to bloodthirsty when unsheathing her sword.
    • Acala for Daizaemon. His spell Giant King of Wisdom references him, a wrathful protector deity prominent in Buddhism fitting for his monk-like appearance.
    • Rakshasa for Jozo. His spell Killing Kakara Blade references them, a race of man-eating demigods regarded as embodiments of evil in Hindu and Buddhist scriptures. He wears a hannya mask used to represent demons.
    • Yasha for Komari. Her spell Diamond Yasha Princess ☆ Fivefold Dance references them, mischievous nature spirits in Buddhism and Hinduism, going with her cheerful, lively attitude.
  • Undying Loyalty: To their lord Ryuya, especially Ichika. His belief that they can defeat the five-headed dragon greatly motivates them to do so.
  • The Worf Effect: Briefly. When facing off against the Paladins, 5 of their number are momentarily incapacitated by a Combination Attack from the Ice and Space/Water Paladin, enabling Asta to step in and demonstrate his improved Zetten against them. However, Yosuga easily withstands the same attack, and makes it clear to the Ice Paladin that it was merely a bad match-up from their specific magics warping an unavoidable attack into the Seven's blindspots.

    Yami Ichika

Yami Ichika

Debut: Chapter 337 (Manga)

Yojutsu Attribute: Dark

"If you're going to ignore my lord's warning and waste the life he saved, then I'll cut you down, right here, right now. Don't take others' kindness for granted, you fool."

Yami Sukehiro's younger sister and a member of the Ryuzen Seven. She's a serious young woman who hates her brother for killing their clan, and is very loyal to Ryuya for being her benefactor. Ichika uses Dark Yojutsu in combination with sword fighting and martial arts.

  • Abusive Parents: Her alcoholic father resented her because her mother died shortly after giving birth to her, a girl who couldn't fight, and was about to hit her with a wooden sword until Yami stopped him with his. He's her manifestation of a memory of fear by Yrul's Bogeyman due to treating her cruelly as a child, and gave her a drug that caused her inner yoryoku to go berserk and drove her into slaying her own clan. The massacre makes him praise her for her power before likely getting killed right after.
  • Action Girl: Oh yes. She ragdolls Asta while he's in his Black form during their sparring match using her martial arts and swordsmanship empowered by her ki. Ironically, her alcoholic father hated her for not being a fighter when she was younger, forcing Yami to constantly protect her from his beatings.
  • Aloof Ally: Ichika complies with Ryu's intention to have Asta train to defeat Lucius, demonstrating Zetten and telling Asta to try to do it himself while still making her dislike of him clear, even when he genuinely thanks her for the opportunity to become stronger.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Long black hair in a braid and a cold, dismissive attitude especially towards Asta.
  • Badass Adorable: Looks much younger than her age of 24 and can have a cute bearing despite being a dark yojutsu female samurai who serves as one of her country's guardians.
  • Badass in Distress: Turns into this when Yrul shows her visions of her killing her own clan after being drugged by her father, rendering her incapable of combat before the Bogeyman (taking her father's form) moves in for the kill. Thankfully, Asta intercepts the Bogeyman in time.
  • Big Brother Worship: Subverted in the present day. Ichika tells Asta that she doesn't care about Yami either, calling him a clown, but when Asta digs a bit further, turns out she views Yami way worse than that. As a child she admired him a lot before she apparently saw him kill them with her own eyes, but now she considers him scum for allegedly massacring their clan.
  • Black Knight: Her Dark Yojutsu: Dark-Cloaked Black Warrior clads her in black samurai armor made of darkness complete with an oni mask, using it when getting serious and challenging Asta after he refuses to believe Yami massacred his clan.
  • Braids of Action: Ichika has her long black hair braided with a ribbon and as a member of the Ryuzen Seven she's one of the Land of the Sun's strongest.
  • Broken Bird: Cold, serious, tragic past in which her beloved older brother allegedly massacred their clan and abandoned her, and to her personal dislike she mentors the much more idealistic Asta.
  • Brutal Honesty: She makes it very clear why Asta is angering her, telling him straight up that he's disrespecting Ryuya for obliviously calling him weak and taking Ryuya and Fumito's kindness for granted if he leaves and dies fighting Lucius because he didn't train enough.
  • Cain and Abel: To her, Yami is the Cain to his younger sister Ichika's Abel for supposedly killing their father and entire clan and then abandoning her when fleeing, calling him scum of the lowest order and a Demon-God even worse than their father. It's flipped on its head when it's revealed Ichika massacred their clan when she was given a demon soul pill by their father that spiked up her urge to kill and yoryoku, and Yami took the blame to prevent her from learning the cruel truth.
  • Casting a Shadow: Like her brother she has dark yojutsu.
  • Children Forced to Kill: When Ichika was seven she was given the demon soul pill, the Yami clan's secret drug that spiked up her bloodlust and latent yoryoku, leading her to massacre the clan. Ichika repressed the memory and Yami took the blame for the massacre, with Ryuya keeping the Awful Truth from her.
  • Cosmic Motifs: The Moon, fitting with her dark yojutsu and cold bearing. Her Dark Yojutsu: Dark-Cloaked Black Warrior clads her in a darkness armor with crescent moon symbols and forms a crescent moon on her back. Her spell Black Crescent Moon unleashes a crescentic beam of darkness. Volume 34 features her with a crescent moon in the background. The Moon is also associated with madness, fitting with how Ichika was drugged by her father and went berserk killing the Yami Clan, with the night it took place having had a crescent moon.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She has dark yojutsu and a standoffish demeanor but works under the shogun as one of the Ryuzen Seven, fighting to protect the Land of the Sun.
  • Death Glare: Gives one to Asta when he notes that Ryu isn't that strong based on his magical power, and one reminiscent of her brother when Asta approaches her when realizing she's Yami's sister, complete with a face grab.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: After learning that Yami didn't massacre their clan and took the blame for her Ichika becomes much amicable to Asta, pouring sake for him and apologizing for talking badly about Yami and even telling him good morning. She still has a cold seriousness about her, telling Asta not to talk down on her and to take responsibility in their training after he drunkenly walks in on her in the hot spring.
  • Elemental Armor: Her Dark-Cloaked Black Warrior spell covers her body in a samurai armor made out of darkness.
  • Elemental Personalities: The brooding young woman's family name is Yami, Japanese for dark, and she uses Dark Yojutsu.
  • Family Eye Resemblance: She has the same eyes as her brother Yami. It gets especially obvious when she gives him a similar Death Glare as her brother did to Asta on their first meeting.
  • Foil: To Asta. Asta's Devil Union clads him in a black demonic armor. Ichika's Dark-Cloaked Black Warrior covers her in a black, crescentic samurai armor. Asta is grateful to Yami for taking him into the Black Bulls and mentoring him, while Ichika detests her older brother for allegedly slaughtering their clan and abandoning her, with the two refusing to back down on their perspectives on Yami and ignoring each other's.
  • Forehead of Doom: Thanks to her hairstyle having her bangs part at the top of her head, her forehead is very prominent with the veins on it bulging when she uses her ki.
  • Foreshadowing: There are a few subtle hints that Ichika was responsible for the massacre of her clan, not Yami:
    • Take a close look at Ichika and Ryuya when they see Yami on the beach. Ichika is completely unharmed and looks less like she's in pain and more like she's waking up from a bad stupor. Meanwhile, Ryuya was already injured and bleeding by the time he and Ichika arrived at Yami's location. It's Ichika's memories of the event, but this means Ichika committed the slaughter when drugged.
    • Ichika states that, after the age of wars ended, the Yami Clan became protectors of the island region known as Goshu. Then we see her father, who was shown to be a belligerent, peace-hating Blood Knight who despised the fact that their people were reduced to being the guardians of a remote chunk of land, and actively desired battle again. If anyone wanted war and bloodshed, it was him. It would make sense for him to have either one of his children drugged to induce mass bloodshed regardless of cost.
    • Ichika has a moon motif, much like her brother does - the crescent moon, to be precise. Her Dark Cloaked Black Warrior gives off a black aura that takes the shape of a small crescent moon, and one of her sword attacks is even named "Black Crescent Moon". On the night the Yami Clan massacre took place, a crescent moon can be seen in the sky.
    • Chapter 341, where Ichika begins to tell Asta her backstory, is titled "Hazy". "Hazy" refers to something that is vague, uncertain and unclear - just like Ichika's memories of what really happened that night.
    • Every time an atrocity involving mass death and destruction has occurred, it's always shown to be the result of someone whose actions were unconsciously/unwillingly carried out on their end. For the elf village and Clover Kingdom, it was Zagred possessing a Clover Kingdom minister and corrupting the Elves into thinking the royals did it, and for the Spade Kingdom, it was a Batman Gambit Lucius conducted through possessing Julius. While there's no one being possessed this time around, Ichika's actions are still not her own and Yami is definitely not the one responsible for the massacre.
  • Genocide from the Inside: In an attempt to completely incapacitate her, Yrul shows her a repressed memory where she killed her whole clan when her father gave her the clan's secret demon soul pill that caused her yoryoku to go berserk. The incident was covered up by Ryuya to not make Ichika feel horrible and Yami was somehow made the scapegoat. Ichika's horrified to learn she had done it and blamed Yami for years.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Slaps Asta when he pleads with Ryu to go back to the Clover Kingdom to stop Lucius despite not having trained enough yet and there being enough time for him to get stronger, saying that he shouldn't waste his life after Ryu and Mikuriya saved him, which helps calm him down. Asta repays her the favor by intercepting a Bogeyman moving in for the kill and snapping her out of its Mind Rape.
  • Good Is Not Nice: One of the Land of the Sun's protectors but doesn't hesitate to slap Asta when he wants to go back to the Clover Kingdom to fight Lucius, telling him that she personally doesn't care if he dies and will cut him down if he plans on throwing his life away, but he shouldn't take Ryu and Mikuriya's kindness in saving his life for granted, convincing him to stay for training.
  • Heroic BSoD: When she learns that she was actually the one who massacred their clan when her father drugged her with a demon soul pill, she questions all the days she spent hating Yami, who took the blame to hide the painful truth from her. She tries to not be unsettled by it and keep focused against the Bogeyman in the form of her father, but questions if she had grown stronger and is still weak, and is about to be cut down by the Bogeyman in the form of her father until Asta stops him just like Yami did for her when they were young.
  • Hidden Depths: According to her volume profile, one of her favorite things is the sound of insects at night.
  • Icy Gray Eyes: She has dark gray eyes and is very cold to Asta.
  • Implausible Fencing Powers: While fighting Asta she slices up a forest lengthwise even when he partially parries her attack.
  • Iron Lady: She's called Lady Yami as one of the Seven Ryuzen and stern and harsh, especially to Asta threatening to kill him herself if he'll ignore Ryuya's warning to leave without training and be too weak to stand a chance against Lucius, intimidating even her shogun.
  • Jerkass to One: Ichika is uptight and serious but especially hates Asta, calling him an outsider and getting angry at him for telling Ryuya that he doesn't seem to be strong, which he himself admits to be true. When Asta tries going up to her when he realizes that she's Yami's sister, she grabs him by the face for trying to approach her, telling Asta that she can't stand men like him. She gets better when she learns Yami didn't massacre their clan and Asta saves her from Yrul, apologizing to him for her behavior.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: A swordswoman who hails from the Land of the Sun and wields a katana with enough power to slice through a bamboo forest.
  • Ki Manipulation: She's a master of it to the point it gives her the strength to overwhelm Asta in even his Black form which blocks simple Yojutsu entirely.
  • Kinslaying Is a Special Kind of Evil: A believer in this, calling Yami even worse than their abusive father, who mistreated her for being a weak girl, for killing his own father and clan. That's why she's rendered totally powerless when Yrul shows her that she killed her clan instead and Yami took the blame.
  • Last of Their Kind: After she massacred her own clan and Yami became the scapegoat and fled to the Clover Kingdom, Ichika is the last living member of the Yami Clan in the Land of the Sun.
  • Legacy of Service: After making a name for themselves in wars, the Yami Clan became guards of Goshu, a territory under the rule of the Ryudo Clan. Even after the massacre of the Yami Clan, Ichika still serves under the shogun Ryudo Ryuya as one of the Ryuzen Seven.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Using ki to increase her strength and speed she's able to overwhelm Black Asta, evading his attacks and sending him flying with a brutal kick that causes him to nearly black out.
  • Long-Lost Relative: She's the younger sister of Yami, who was shipwrecked in the Clover Kingdom when he was 13.
  • Luminescent Blush: When a drunk Asta accidentally comes into the hot springs with her in it while it's only reserved for women.
  • Lunacy: Her Dark-Cloaked Black Warrior is adorned with crescent designs and she has the spell Black Crescent Moon releasing a crescentic flying slash of darkness.
  • Magic Knight: Ichika uses her Dark Yojutsu mostly in combination with her swordsmanship, able to bisect an entire bamboo forest with a single sword swing. The Yami Clan, descended from a group of infamous assassins, were trained as "spirit swordsmen", coating their katanas in their yojutsu.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Ichika means "one flower" in Japanese. She was resented by her father for being born a girl, thinking that she couldn't fight and would be deadweight in their clan of warriors.
    • Her family name "Yami" means darkness in Japanese, fitting with their yojutsu attribute. It contains the kanji for "night" and "appearance".
  • Older Than They Look: She's 24, with Asta having thought they were the same age. When she questions him for implying that she looks like a child, he tells her she's youthful which is good.
  • Oni: As a member of the Yami clan she's a descendant of assassins known as Kijin, coming from the name of oni in Japanese Mythology so powerful and violent that they are considered demon gods, and the Yami Clan's strongest fighter had the title of Demon-God. In her Dark Yojutsu: Dark-Cloaked Black Warrior she wears an oni mask covering her mouth. Ginnojomorifuyu even calls her an ogre.
  • Patricide: Killed her own father alongside her entire clan after he drugged her, his last words being congratulating Ichika for really being his kid after all. Yami took the blame for the incident and Ryuya covered it up for Ichika's sake, forcing the former to run to Clover Kingdom.
  • Perpetual Frowner: She has a constant frown, with it turning much more disdainful when speaking to Asta.
  • Quit Your Whining: Slaps Asta when he asks Ryuya to take him back to the Clover Kingdom in spite of not having trained enough yet and panicking about if he can even become strong enough to defeat Lucius, telling him not to waste the kindness Ryuya and Fumito have shown him despite being a foreigner and threatening to cut him down herself if he will.
  • Rage Helm: In her Dark-Cloaked Black Warrior she wears a menpōnote  modeled after an oni that covers the bottom half of her face.
  • Repressed Memories: Yrul's Bogeyman takes the form of her father and awakens her memory of terror of how she took the demon soul pill her father gave her and slaughtered her clan, with Yami taking the blame of Ryuya keeping the truth from her. Ichika is horrified when she finds out.
  • Samurai Ponytail: A swordswoman who's one of the Land of the Sun's best warriors and has her long black hair in a braided ponytail.
  • Seppuku: Played for Laughs. She proposes slashing her stomach open in apology after Ryuya comes in between her and Asta's fight, with Ryuya calling that scary and telling her to skip it.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Like Yami she's unfriendly to Asta when first meeting him, threatening him when he approaches her and grabbing him by his face just like her older brother.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: Training or not she treats her sparring match with Asta for him to learn to create an opening for Zetten like real combat, telling him that he'll die if he doesn't give his all against her. When Asta refuses to back down in believing Yami didn't kill his clan, she challenges Asta to prove the strength he's gained under Yami's leadership in training, getting serious and pulling out her scroll to use her Dark-Cloaked Black Warrior.
  • Spellblade: Using her yojutsu she can coat her katana in darkness.
  • Strong and Skilled: She has a large amount of yoryoku that impresses even a Paladin Sister Lily, and uses her dark yojutsu in tandem with her skills in swordsmanship and martial arts.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She's the spitting image of her late mother who died young. The resemblance contributed to her father's hatred of Ichika — reminding him of how his wife died shortly after giving birth to a weak girl.
  • Sword and Fist: An adept martial artist and swordwoman, attacking Asta with palm strikes, kicks, and cutting down a forest of bamboos with her katana. Her dark yojutsu works best in combination with martial arts and swordsmanship.
  • Sword Beam: Her Black Crescent Moon spell unleashes a wide, flying crescentic beam of darkness from her katana.
  • Tiny Tyrannical Girl: She looks like a young girl despite her age standing at only 156 cm, and fits with her dislike of Asta and seriousness, intimidating even her own benefactor and lord Ryuya and telling a nervous Ginnojomorifuyu to shut up and draw her sword.
  • Took a Level in Badass: As a child she was cruelly mistreated by her father for being weak despite being a member of the Yami Clan, with Yami having to step in to protect her from him. In the present-day she's one of the Land of the Sun's guardians and able to overwhelm Asta in a fight. When confronted with the illusion of her father and truth that she massacred her clan and Yami took the blame for her, she's unable to stay focused and questions if she did become stronger and was always weak.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Ichika's eyes slant upward and she has a harsh, serious disposition, grabbing Asta by his face when he he gets too close her. Consecutive panels of her present-day eyes and her rounder eyes as a child help contrast herself now and then.
  • The Un-Favourite: While their father trained Yami because of his yoryoku power and potential to be their clan's strongest fighter, he mistreated Ichika for being born a girl who couldn't fight to a clan of warriors.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: She used to be a sweet young girl meek in the presence of her abusive drunk father who loved her older brother, that is until her father drugged her into massacring their clan and Yami took the blame and abandoned her.
  • Undying Loyalty: Very loyal to her shogun Ryuya, slapping Asta and threatening to cut him down for ignoring Ryuya's warning to not go back to the Clover Kingdom immediately and fight a powerful Lucius without taking time to train, angrily telling him not to waste her lord's kindness. It stems from his uniting the Land of the Sun despite having no yoryoku and being her benefactor, saving her even as he knew she slaughtered her own clan while drugged.
  • Waif-Fu: The bandits underestimate her for being a skinny small girl but she easily sends them flying into a stone wall with some Ki Manipulation.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: Her Black Star spell is this, dragging a target towards her. She creates an irregular trajectory to make it easier to strike at vulnerabilities in Asta during their fight.

Debut: Chapter 341 (Manga)

Yojutsu Attribute: Wind

A member of the Ryuzen Seven. He is a serious man in a black full-body suit and a hannya mask who can slice enemies with blades of wind.

  • Elemental Personalities: Averted. He has Wind Yojutsu but instead of being carefree and flighty he's very serious and dour.
  • Ninja: One who's much more serious about being one than Komari, telling her to practice stealth. He even uses hand signs when casting his yojutsu.
  • Only Sane Man: He's much more stern and serious than the other members of the Ryuzen Seven like Komari and Daizaemon.
  • Rage Helm: He wears a hannya mask, used in Japanese Noh theater to represent a demon, with an X-shaped scar on its forehead.
  • Razor Wind: His Killing Kakara Blade spell slices up one of the five-headed dragon's heads with wind.

    O'oka Daizaemon

O'oka Daizaemon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ooka_daizaemon_341.png

Debut: Chapter 341 (Manga)

Yojutsu Attribute: Earth

A member of the Ryuzen Seven. He's a large-bodied monk who summons large Buddha statues made by Earth Yojutsu to fight.

  • Big Fun: He has a big, wide build and is quite boisterous with his laughing and shouting.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Has thick eyebrows to go with his bald monk look.
  • Dirty Old Monk: Played for Laughs. He has a monk-like appearance with his shaved head and prayer beads, but is a little too excited about how Komari's outfit leaves little to the imagination.
  • Our Giants Are Bigger: His spell Giant King of Wisdom covers himself in the giant earth body of a wrathful deity, with a punch strong enough to shatter one of the five-headed dragon's heads.
  • Warrior Monk: Looks like a monk with his shaved head, prayer bead necklace, and robes, and is a member of the Ryuzen Seven who can use his magic to form a wrathful Buddhist deity.

  • Elemental Personalities: She has Lightning Yojutsu and is very lively and energetic.
  • Elemental Weapon: She can form kunai out of lightning.
  • Genki Girl: She's very energetic, wanting to liven up the Land of the Sun.
  • Gyaru Girl: Her design is based on this with her dyed blonde hair, tanned skin, loose socks, and decorated nails, with Jozo pointing out how gaudy she is for a ninja.
  • Highly-Visible Ninja: Jozo points out that she's too gaudy for a ninja with her fashion sense.
Jozo: You are a ninja, albeit not much of one. Practice stealth.

Debut: Chapter 344 (Manga)

Yojutsu Attribute: Snow

A member of the Ryuzen Seven. While seemingly a timid, Nervous Wreck of a girl, she turns into an Ax-Crazy Blood Knight in combat.

  • Absurd Phobia: She's terrified of frogs, shown when Yrul's Bogeyman took the form of a frog and that instantly puts her out of action.
  • Asian Fox Spirit: Her spell Silver Fox in Blood-Dyed Robes gives her kitsune tails and ears and the strength to slice through one of the five-headed dragon's heads from inside its mouth.
  • Blood Knight: What she turns into when she draws her sword, becoming eager about shedding blood.
  • Blood-Splattered Warrior: What she becomes after cutting through the five-headed dragon's skull from inside its mouth, while using her spell named Silver Fox in Blood-Dyed Robes at that.
  • Elemental Personalities: Subverted. She has Snow Yojutsu but instead of being cold and unfeeling as her first appearance might suggest she's overly nervous until she unsheathes her blade, becoming a psychotic fighter.
  • Lady of War: Subverted. She looks very demure holding a katana and wearing an elegant kimono and hair ornaments, only to be terrified facing the five-headed dragon until she unsheathes her sword, becoming gleeful at making it rain blood with Sister Lily noting that she's actually quite vulgar.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Ichika chastises her for going too far in against the five-headed dragon without a plan.
  • Mood-Swinger: Goes from meek and whining to bloodthirsty when she unsheathes her sword.
  • Nervous Wreck: Before she draws her sword she's gloomily fretting about how they're done for against the five-headed dragon.
  • Slasher Smile: Has one when in her bloodthirsty personality.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Despite being a maniacal Blood Knight in battle her Bogeyman turns into a giant frog which has her curl up into a ball unable to fight.

    Mushogatake Yosuga

Debut: Chapter 344 (Manga)

Yojutsu Attribute: Iron

"I can cut everything I see... no matter what!! And that's why I'm strong. Because I believe that."

The strongest member of the Ryuzen Seven and a master swordsman. He and Fujio volunteer to train Asta when Ichika and the others were deployed to deal with some invading Paladins.

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: States that his belief that he can cut anything is what makes himself strong, and he shows it by slicing through a walkway of stone steps and torii when training Asta.
  • The Ace: He's said to be the strongest of the Ryuzen Seven, and proves it by easily overpowering Heath Grice in a one-one-one battle.
  • Amazon Chaser: Asks Asta to introduce him to strong women from his country preferably one with flame yojutsu, with Asta immediately thinking of Mereoleona.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Very confident in his power. His valuation of his strength is what made him rather have the weak of the country die than lose his yoryoku to gain the Tengentsu, and unable to understand why Ryuya made that sacrifice until seeing what he contributed to the country in spite of having lost all his yojutsu.
  • Chrome Champion: His Iron God of War transforms his entire body clothes included into iron and gives him armor-like structures, easily withstanding Heath's ice.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: His Iron Yojitsu is used to harden his body with iron, giving him enough strength and toughness to out-power a Paladin.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Was this to Ryuya in their youth due to being powerful young lords of neighboring domains, competing to see who'd be best fit to be shogun. That is until Ryuya sacrificed all his yojutsu to gain the Tengentsu to cure a raging plague.
  • Master Swordsman: He boasts that there's nothing his sword can't cut, with his swings creating flying slashes that cut through faraway objects and crush stone. Even Asta a trained swordsman himself thinks he's insanely tough during their training.
  • Mr. Fanservice: His outfit leaves little to the imagination for his muscled body, abs and chest included.
  • Tiger Versus Dragon: Was the Tiger to Ryuya's Dragon when they were younger as rivals and heirs of nearby regions.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Like Asta's previous outfit, he wears a tight black shirt that only covers his shoulders, upper arms, and part of his chest leaving most of his chest and abs bare.
  • Warrior Therapist: From sword sparring with Asta he's able to tell that Asta is full of doubt. He notices that there's hesitation in the way he fights and doesn't have solid conviction after being unable to defeat Lucius and Ichika.
    Yosuga: Idiot. Swords don't lie.
