    open/close all folders

    In General
  • Animal Motifs: Lions. They're a courageous group associated with fire. From Flame Magic, Fuegoleon can form a lion and Mereoleona creates a lion's paw.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Subverted. Unlike most nobles, the Vermillions are friendly and believe that, through training, anyone can become a great Magic Knight.
  • Badass Family: Much like the Silver Eagles, the highest-ranked members are composed by a single family: the Vermillion family.
  • Color Motif: Crimson. The squad is a brave, hot-blooded group who favor using Flame Magic.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: The Vermillion siblings all have orange-red hair and use flame magic.
  • Family Business: The Crimson Lion Kings are led by the House of Vermillion, whose members are automatically accepted by the squad. Notably, Mimosa and Kirsch chose not to join their family's squad, as Mimosa didn't want to rely on her family background, and Kirsch disliked the hot-blooded squad and liked the Coral Peacocks' robes.
  • Family Theme Naming: The Vermillion siblings Fuegoleon, Mereoleona, and Leopold all share "leo" in their names, which fits with their lion theme.
  • Fiery Lion: They are a Magic Knight Squad with the sigil of a lion, and most of their members use a form of Flame Magic.
  • Heroic Lineage: The Vermillion Family are descendants of the first Wizard King, Lumiere Silvamillion Clover.
  • Hot-Blooded: While Fuegoleon isn't as much, the rest of the members are definitely explosive, strong-headed and loud.
  • Playing with Fire: Most members of the group appear to be using some variation of Flame Magic.
  • Practically Different Generations: Leopold is 16 years old, much younger than his older siblings Fuegoleon and Mereoleona, who are 30 and 32 years old, respectively.
  • Primary-Color Champion: Most of their members wear blue, yellow, and red and they're a courageous squad of Magic Knights.
  • Red Is Violent: Their color is crimson and they are a rowdy, Hot-Blooded squad.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Following Fuegoleon's coma, the Crimson Lion Kings are the team most invested in defeating the Eye of the Midnight Sun.
  • Royal Blood: All the members of the Vermillion family are of royal lineage.
  • Training from Hell: Shortly after becoming captain, Mereoleona subjects the entire squad to this at the Yultim Volcano Trail.
  • Western Zodiac: Other than their Family Theme Naming, the Vermillion siblings' star sign is Leo to fit their personalities and motifs.

Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi (Japanese), J. Michael Tatum (English), Mikaela Krantz (English, young)note

Debut: Chapter 1 (Manga), Episode 3 (Anime)

Magic Attribute: Flame

"Being weak is nothing to be ashamed of. Staying weak is!"

A strong man with a brotherly and kind personality. He is the widely-respected captain of the Crimson Lion Kings, recognized as a true Magic Knight. He has a rivalry with Nozel, the captain of the Silver Eagles.

Uses Flame Magic, manipulating fire to create large forms that can attack the enemy.

  • The Ace: Not only is Fuegoleon immensely powerful even by the standards of the World of Badass the series is set, but the guy's is also deeply respected and incredibly well liked among even the prickliest of his peers: Nozel considers him both The Rival and the best example of a Worthy Opponent, Yami outright scoffs at the notion that Licht could defeat him in a fair fight and guesses the elf only took down Fuegoleon thanks to a sneak attack and Mereleona outright considers her little brother to be Always Someone Better despite her ridiculously monstrous strength. Not to mention how both Asta and Noelle deeply respect him as a Magic Knight and everyone in the Crimson Lion Kings seem to have a case of Big Brother Worship towards him. And in every scene he appears he fully show just why his status as The Ace is fully earned.
  • Always Someone Better:
    • Played with, as he considers his older sister Mereleona stronger than him, but at the same time she considers him stronger than herself.
    • Played straight with his younger brother Leopold, who sees Fuegoleon as more charismatic and talented.
  • Animal Battle Aura: It takes the form of a fiery lion when he confronts Nozel.
  • Animal Motifs: A lion with his flowing hair and his title as Captain of the Crimson Lion Kings.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Loses an arm after being caught in a trap during the raid on the Royal Capital. After awakening from his coma and gaining Salamander, he forms a replacement arm out of fire.
  • Artificial Limbs: Crafts a replacement out of flame when he finally wakes from his coma.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis:
    • Picks apart the magic and strategy of Rades while he fights Asta, before decimating his foe in a single blast.
    • He bypasses an elf's Vortex Magic's detection by using Salamander as a decoy and erasing his magic to get close and land the defeating blow.
  • Battle Aura: Takes the form of a lion when he gets serious.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Fuegoleon serves as this to Leopold, having trained him throughout his childhood. Leopold himself looks up to Fuegoleon and highly respects him for his charisma and power.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Just as the Black Bulls are about to fight Damnatio at the Magic Parliament trial, Nozel and Fuegoleon stop them, delivering Julius's message that the Black Bulls will go into exile to investigate the devils, saving Asta and Nero from execution in the meantime.
  • Big Sister Worship: He highly respects his older sister Mereoleona for her strength and has nothing but true faith in her abilities.
  • The Bus Came Back: After being put in a coma and staying so for more than 100 chapters, he wakes up at last to fight Randall with Salamander's help.
  • Came Back Strong: After Salamander wakes him from his coma, he commands the spirit's power and is stronger than ever. He even replaces his severed arm with one made of fire.
  • Cold Flames: His Leo Palma spell creates flame lion palms to restrain enemies without burning them.
  • Cool Big Bro: Not only to his actual brother but also to Asta and Noelle, as soon as he meets them, inspiring them to achieve their goals and become stronger.
  • Dare to Be Badass: He challenges an uncertain Noelle to grow stronger during the Royal Capital Assault Arc:
"Being weak is nothing to be ashamed of. Staying weak is!"
  • Dragon Rider: After gaining the draconic Salamander, Fuegoleon can ride it in battle while it is enlarged, as seen during the Battle of the Magic Knights Squad Captains.
  • Elemental Barrier: His spell Ignis Columna forms a spiraling pillar made of fire to defend against attacks.
  • Elemental Punch: He replaces his right arm with one made of fire after waking up and gaining Salamander. He enlarges it and punches the elf possessing Kaiser, knocking him out.
  • Facial Markings: A small one on his forehead and red ones around his eyes similar to his siblings.
  • Fiery Stoic: Although he has his moments of hamminess, in general he's usually calm. He also uses Flame Magic.
  • Fire/Water Juxtaposition: Fuegoleon and Nozel have had an intense rivalry since they were children which remains even as adults. Fuegoleon uses Flame Magic to form a lion and large fire blasts. Nozel uses Mercury Magic, liquid metal, to form an eagle and shape into many different forms. Fuegoleon is a warm and hot-blooded person, having his moments of hamminess, who judges someone for their worth and not their social status. Nozel is a cold individual, aloof towards even his family, who has the arrogance of royalty.
  • Foil: He is the Cool Big Bro flame magic user to Nozel's Big Brother Bully metallic liquid magic user. They especially part themselves in regards to how they treat Noelle. While Nozel bullied, belittled and gave her the cold shoulder her entire life, Fuegoleon is immediately friendly towards her, and when she shows doubts about her power, he assures her that she can become a better mage as long as she keeps training.
  • Force and Finesse: The Finesse to his sister Mereoleona's Force, using a more ranged, tactical style of fighting while she overwhelms opponents with sheer ferocity through punches of fire.
  • Genius Bruiser: The Volume 13 Questions Brigade states that he's the smartest captain, which shows in how he fights, picking apart enemies' strategies when fighting Rades and the elf in Kaiser's body to defeat them.
  • Gratuitous Latin: Most of his Flame Magic spells are Latin, like Leo Rugiens, Latin for lion roaring, and Ignis Columna, Fire column in Latin.
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: Gender-Inverted. Fuegoleon mostly uses powerful, ranged blasts of fire. Mereoleona, on the other hand, fights with brutal punches of fire.
  • Hand Blast: His spell Sol Linea fires a beam of concentrated fire from his hand.
  • Has a Type: According to the Volume 18 Questions Brigade, he is attracted to someone with a passionate will to strive towards their goals.
  • He's Back!: Returns in Chapter 171 after being woke up by Salamander due to the Elves attacking.
  • Hot-Blooded: Not as bad as Leopold, but he has his moments.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: A more rugged one than most, but he qualifies with his good looks and long red hair.
  • Meaningful Name: Named Leon, when he's the captain of the Crimson Lion Kings. The fact that his last name is Vermillion lends further credence to this. His full first name, Fuegoleon, also references fire ("Fuego" is "fire" in Spanish).
  • Mythical Motifs: Western dragons upon receiving Salamander, who takes the appearance of one on top of boosting his already formidable Fire Magic.
  • Nice Guy: In contrast to most aristocracy. Fuegoleon is very wise and fair, defending Asta from the Silva siblings who mock him for his social status and lack of magic, and encouraging Noelle to get stronger, telling here that there's no shame in being weak so long as she works to become stronger.
  • Not So Stoic: He gets particularly fired up and hammy when he's trying to set an example for the other knights.
  • Panthera Awesome: He can create a lion made out of fire to fight against enemies.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Using the power of Salamander, he can unleash giant blasts of fire able to melt through Nozel's giant silver cage and boil a large body of water.
  • Playing with Fire: Like most of his squad. He gains even stronger Flame Magic when he's chosen by the flame spirit Salamander.
  • Purple Is Powerful: He has purple eyes, and is a powerful Magic Knight captain who later gains the power of the fire spirit Salamander.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He stops Nozel from attacking Asta and calls him out on his douchebag attitude to the other guests in the Valor Ceremony.
  • The Rival: He's had a rivalry with Nozel since they were kids.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: He's not on one, but has just about inspired one from every Magic Knight. As the Wizard King put it: Licht "...might have just awakened a sleeping lion and robbed a bear of her cubs at the same time." Nozel was furious about Fuegoleon's condition, as was his older sister Mereoleona, Yami made sure to take the Big Bad seriously when he later fought him, and the rest of the Magic Knights vowed to get stronger so that it might never happen again.
  • Sibling Rivalry: With Mereoleona as children — the day before she received her grimoire, Mereoleona and Fuegoleon got into a fight after she mocked the Magic Knights, which destroyed part of the Vermillion Estate and came to be known as "Hot-Blooded Tuesday". As adults it's friendly, with the two deeply admiring one another and seeing each other as stronger than the other.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: He is a lot calmer and mature than his fiery and passionate siblings Leopold and Mereoleona.
  • The Stoic: Never loses his composure, even when he looks ready to fight Nozel.
  • Strong Girl, Smart Guy: Mereoleona is the Strong Girl to her brother Fuegoleon's Smart Guy. She's regarded as the most powerful Magic Knight in the kingdom and uses a brutal brawler style of fighting, and he's known for his charisma and is the most intelligent captain, using strategic tactics in battle. Their younger brother Leopold admires Mereoleona for her strength, and Fuegoleon for his brilliance.
  • Summon Magic: After being chosen by the flame spirit Salamander, he can summon it using Spirit Magic.

Voiced by: Junko Minagawa (Japanese), Monica Rial (English)

Debut: Chapter 105 (Manga), Episode 70 (Anime)

Magic Attribute: Flame

"Nothing's stronger than a determined woman."

The oldest child of the Vermillion family and sister of Fuegoleon and Leopold. She replaces Fuegoleon as captain of the Crimson Lion Kings after he is injured. Mereoleona has a short temper and hates to lose, but also a kinder, more caring side. She has little interest in politics and hates the stuffiness of the Clover Kingdom. A gifted hand-to-hand fighter, Mereoleona claims she has never been defeated on the battlefield.

Uses a particularly brutal brand of Flame Magic capable of burning through other spells. Each of her own spells revolves around summoning fists of fire to pummel her opponents from every direction. Thanks to living in the wilderness for most of the year, she has a powerful Mana Skin and also uses Mana Zone to control the mana of her surroundings.

  • The Ace: Mereoleona is crazy powerful, renowned as completely undefeated, and is made the Captain of the elite Royal Knights unit, who also completely crushes one of the strongest members of the Third Eye.
  • Action Girl: The strongest Magic Knight in the Clover Kingdom, a powerful hand-to-hand combatant, and user of a brutal form of Flame Magic to pummel enemies. Stated by Zora when Rhya says that she's wasting her beauty:
    "She's not a beauty. She's a beast."
  • Aloof Big Sister: Disparages Fuegoleon for being comatose and letting his squad rank low as captain, and is harsh towards Leopold when he tries to defend their brother. Despite this, it's clear that she cares greatly for her younger brothers, and attacks the Eye of the Midnight Sun in revenge for Fuegoleon.
  • Always Someone Better:
    • Played with, as she considers her younger brother Fuegoleon stronger than her, but at the same time he considers her stronger than himself.
    • Played straight with her younger brother Leopold, who sees Mereoleona as more powerful and talented.
  • Amazonian Beauty: She's much more muscled than most of the female cast, which fits with her incredible physical power. That said, Rhya calls her beautiful.
  • Animal Motifs: Lions, of course, like the rest of her siblings. A lioness, more specifically, as "females are the ones who hunt!!", as seen in the color page for Chapter 218. She is much more aggressive and merciless than her younger brothers, and, like a lioness who hunts for her pride, is fiercely protective of her family. Her short haircut after the timeskip gives her a more leonine appearance.
  • Anime Hair: Her long, wavy red hair sticks up at the ends like flames.
  • Anti-Hero: She's aggressive and willing to kill all the members of the Eye of the Midnight Sun out of revenge for her younger brother's injury, contrasting with Asta who hopes to come to a mutual understanding with their enemies. Her Social Darwinist tendencies also cause her to have a disregard for Magic Knights she deems as weak, outright stating that she doesn't care that Yami and Vangeance got captured, calling them half-wits for it.
  • The Archmage: Mereoleona is famed as the "Uncrowned, Undefeated Lioness" for being undefeated in the battlefield. She has mastered Mana Skin due to living in the wild, steeping herself in natural mana for most of the year, and the advanced technique of Mana Zone to use the power of mana in her environment. Her magic power is so massive that Rhya attributes it not just from her royal heritage but an unknown human strength. Leopold states that she easily could have become the Wizard King had she wanted the role.
  • An Arm and a Leg: She has her left forearm disintegrated by a Paladin Morris. She creates a new one made of mana when going into her Hellfire Incarnate.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Mereoleona states that all their enemies must be destroyed at any cost because they will never stop until they destroy them first. When Asta asks why she's unable to respond. His reply that they can come to understand each other due to them both having their loved ones hurt impresses Mereoleona.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: Mereoleona is one of the strongest Magic Knights in the Clover Kingdom, and could have easily become the Wizard King had she wanted to. She becomes the leader of the Crimson Lion Kings after Fuegoleon is left comatose, and becomes the leader of the Royal Knights, leading them in their attack on the hideout of the Eye of the Midnight Sun.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Mereoleona's fighting style has her ferociously attack enemies, blitzing them before they can even notice to unleash fire punches on them. Her defense is essentially her offense — concentrating her magic into her arm to burn through spells sent at her. In her fight against Morris she resolves to burn through his tentacles faster than he can regenerate them in spite of them breaking down anything they touch, and the Crimson Lion Kings members when they shield her to help destroy his tentacles.
  • Badass Boast:
    • Her reply when Rhya tells her he would have asked her out for a drink if she wasn't a royal:
"I'll let you drink as much as you want of the fires of hell."
    • When Mereoleona tosses Asta and Zora out of the room and collapses the roof of the entrance behind them so that the elves can't pursue, Rhya mentions how benevolent it was of her to sacrifice herself to save her subordinates. Mereoleona dismisses this and says that they were just getting in the way, and she just wanted to kill all five of them by herself.
"Keep you pinned down? Don't make me laugh! I'm planning to kill all of you!!"
  • Battle Aura: She manifests an aura of flames before using Mana Zone to brutalize Rhya.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Mereoleona constantly goads Rhya to unleash his next spell and challenges him to be more of a Worthy Opponent for her as she incinerates everything that he throws at her. She definitely gets more of a challenge when him, along with the other elves, are reincarnated and stronger as well. Even after going all out with a final attack, she would have gotten killed if Asta and Zora didn't save her on a plan that hinged entirely on chance.
  • Berserk Button: Don't slack off, don't call her "Sisgoleon", and don't disgrace the Crimson Lion Kings. It's likely to set her off something fierce.
  • The Berserker: When pushed to her limits, Mereoleona becomes this, fighting with ferocity against the reincarnated elves when they gang up on her and unleashing her final attack with a nightmarish look on her face.
  • Big Damn Heroes: She announces her presence to the Spade Kingdom resistance by punching the ancient demon that's attacking them, then stating that she'll be lending them a hand.
  • Big Eater: She's seen eating a giant piece of wild meat when Zora recalls how she lives in the wilderness for most of the year, with this being a factor in her incredible power.
  • The Big Gal: Mereoleona is the strongest Magic Knight in the kingdom barring possibly Julius, and uses a much more physical fighting style than standard mages, hurling punches of fire to burn through spells.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Mereoleona has short but noticeably thick eyebrows which add to her leonine look.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She resolves to avenge Fuegoleon when she raids the Eye of the Midnight Sun's hideout with the Royal Knights after they left him comatose, vowing to destroy them.
  • Big Sister Mentor: A belligerent one, but she drags Leopold and the rest of the Crimson Lion Kings to the Yultim Volcano for training after their poor placement in the annual squads rankings. She's also this to Noelle, encouraging her to become stronger and live up to her late mother's legacy.
  • Blood Knight: She takes great joy in fighting. She's disappointed when Rhya doesn't turn out to be as strong as she expected, and is very happy at fighting Vetto because of his incredible speed and power. When the ancient demon gets back up after she pummeled it when the gate to the Qliphoth is formed, she smirks in excitement at fighting it more.
  • Boyish Short Hair: She is a powerful, short-tempered woman with a brutal, physical fighting style, and cuts her long hair short after the six month time skip.
  • Breakout Character: Since her introduction, Mereoleona has become one of the most popular characters in the series for her incredible strength and charisma as a leader. So much so that she won a fan poll held to determine who would be the final playable DLC character for Black Clover: Quartet Knights.
  • Brutal Honesty: After going at length on how awesome Noelle's mother was, she then tells Noelle that she isn't like her at all, calling her magic sloppy, crude, and unsightly, making it hard to believe that she's a royal.
  • Burning with Anger: An aura of flames appears around her whenever she gets annoyed — like with the Crimson Lion King's low placement and Asta, Yuno, and Leopold.
  • The Captain:
    • Becomes this for the Crimson Lion Kings after Fuegoleon is left in a coma, and chides them for placing low in the annual squad rankings and takes them to the Yultim Volcano to whip them into shape.
    • Is this for the Royal Knights after they form following the tournament, leading them to assault the Eye of the Midnight Sun's hideout.
  • Child Prodigy: It was noted that even as a child there was nothing that her magic teachers could teach her that she couldn't learn herself. At the age of 15, Mereoleona turned down being captain of the Crimson Lion Kings and began to leave the Clover Kingdom most of the year to get stronger by herself in the wilderness.
  • Cleavage Window: Her outfit shows off her large chest.
  • Close-Range Combatant: In contrast to most mages in the story who cast spells at a range, Mereoleona gets right in front of enemies and punches them with an immense amount of magical power concentrated in her arm. Zora notes that she's more of a fighter than any mage he's ever seen.
  • Cold Flames: She can create flame lion paws which are able to pick people up without burning them.
  • Combat Clairvoyance: She can use Mana Zone to predict enemy attacks, using it to anticipate many of Rhya's different attacks before she brutalizes him.
  • Combat Pragmatist: She's not above rushing up to an opponent while they're talking to punch them in the face with a Calidos Brachium, to Rhya's misfortune.
  • Combat Stilettos: Wearing heels doesn't stop Mereoleona from sending people flying with her flaming punches.
  • Comedic Sociopathy:
    • She enters the Black Bulls' hideout by blowing up the front door and Magna, and then promptly punches Asta in the face.
    • An extra chapter has her wanting to toss a baby Leopold into the bottom of a valley, stating that if a lion cub can climb out of it they'll grow up to be strong.
  • Contralto of Strength: Mereoleona speaks with a deep, commanding voice, and is one of the strongest female mages in the story, with a fighting style that makes her more of a fighter than a mage.
  • Cool Big Sis: With her squad, which includes her younger brother Leopold, giving them Tough Love for them to get stronger training. She later encourages Noelle to do her best, and is the first person to talk to her about her mom. Later, it's revealed she's an awesome older sister to Fuegoleon, who encourages him to get stronger and has nothing but true faith in his abilities.
  • Creepy Blue Eyes: Has blue eyes that stand out against her fiery red hair, and especially when she goes full-on Berserker when fighting.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • She does this to Rhya. She burns through his spells and trounces him. She's disappointed that he wasn't as much of a challenge as she had expected.
    • Using her Hellfire Incarnate which increases its heat the longer it's used, Mereoleona ends up overpowering and obliterating the gigantic legendary demon of the Spade Kingdom.
  • Dare to Be Badass: She does this to Asta, telling him that someone without magic couldn't climb the Yultim Volcano and wondering if his achievements were all luck. It works, with Asta refining his Black form to do so.
  • Deliberate Injury Gambit: While fighting Vetto, she fakes dropping her guard to let him punch her jaw, only to charge a counterattack and punch him in the jaw to knock him out.
  • Determinator: Takes on a small battalion of elf mages to buy Asta and Zora time to escape, and even after getting blasted nearly to death and expending her entire reserve of magic she stays on her feet, fully intending to fight until her last breath with her bare hands.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: She makes her first appearance after the six month time skip punching an ancient, legendary demon let loose on the Spade Kingdom Resistance by Zenon. She proceeds to pummel it with a new spell after her six months of training, defeating it in due time.
  • Domain Holder: Her Mana Zone ability gives her an area where ambient mana serves her, increasing her mobility, her reflexes, and of course her magical power.
  • The Dreaded: Even captains such as Charlotte and Yami find her scary. Given her immense power and short temper, it's obvious why.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Mereoleona does not believe in taking it easy when she's training people, putting them through intense practice. She makes her squad go to the Yultim Volcano to train and drags Asta, Yuno, Noelle, Yami, and Charlotte against their will.
  • Dynamic Entry:
    • Though seen during the Star Festival, she really makes her introduction by punching her brother Leopold right in the face.
    • She does this to the Black Bulls' hideout by blowing up the front door (and Magna). She then punches Asta in the face.
    • Mereoleona makes her first appearance after the six month time skip attacking the legendary ancient demon let loose on the resistance by Zenon, announcing her presence to them.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: Like her siblings, she has orange-red hair and uses flame magic. Even moreso with her hair, which resembles tufts of flames that jut out.
  • Elemental Punch: The basis of her entire fighting style. Before she even uses her grimoire, she is capable of punching through spells and attacks, and her fists are engulfed in flames. Even then, almost all her spells involve her punching fire.
  • Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors:
    • Defied. She notes that she was never able to defeat Acier Silva despite her Flame Magic having an advantage against her Steel Magic.
    • Mereoleona herself defies this during her fight against Rhya, who throws water (which should be effective against her fire) and fire copied from Fana with the power of Salamander against her. She burns through it all.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: After the six month time skip Mereoleona cuts her long hair short.
  • Facial Markings: She has the same reddish circles around her eyes as her brothers.
  • Fell Asleep Standing Up: After unleashing her strongest spell against five elves, she falls unconscious while standing up as a testament to how badass she is.
  • Fiery Redhead: She's even more passionate and aggressive than her younger brother Leopold, if such a thing was possible.
  • Foil: To Rhya, which is highlighted when they fight. Rhya is laidback while Mereoleona has a fiery personality. His Copy Magic gives him a large number of many different elemental spells; Her Flame Magic mostly has her simply envelop her fists in fire. Rhya's sheer laziness has him rely on his copied spells from others and large magic power as an elf. Mereoleona, despite being born a royal with great magic power, seeks to become stronger and steeps herself in natural mana for most of the year — a source of her inhuman power.
  • Force and Finesse: The Force to her brother Fuegoleon's Finesse, overwhelming opponents with sheer ferocity through punches of fire while he uses a more ranged, tactical style of fighting.
  • The Force Is Strong with This One: Her mana is so great that even Rhya, an elf whose race has mana far surpassing most humans, describes it as a completely unknown human strength, before she pummels him with her Calidos Brachium Barrage to his horror.
  • Full-Contact Magic: Unlike the majority of mages, who simply cast spells from their grimoires, she uses her spells by enveloping her fists in fire or punching out destructive bursts of flames. It's for this reason that Zora notes Mereoleona is more of a fighter than any age mage he's ever seen.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Whenever she unleashes a powerful spell, it's drawn so that her irises and pupils disappear, which the anime adds a glowing effect too.
  • Gratuitous Latin: Most of her spells' names include "Calidos Brachium", which is Latin for "fiery arm".
  • Good Is Not Soft: She leads the Royal Knights against the Eye of the Midnight Sun and aims to completely crush them, in contrast to Asta who wants them to understand each other.
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: Gender-Inverted. Fuegoleon mostly uses powerful, ranged blasts of fire. Mereoleona, on the other hand, fights with brutal punches of fire.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: It does not take much to make her erupt. This, combined with her obscene power, makes her feared by the other captains.
  • Has a Type: According to the Volume 18 Questions Brigade, she likes a man who could survive fighting her in mortal combat.
  • Hellfire: Her spell after her training during the six month time skip, Hellfire Incarnate, invokes this with its name and the power of her flames.
  • Heroic Lineage: As a member of the Vermillion Family, she's a descendant of the first Wizard King, Lumiere Silvamillion Clover. And she follows this by leading the Crimson Lion Kings after Fuegoleon is left in a coma by the Eye of the Midnight Sun.
  • Heroic Neutral: The strongest Magic Knight in the kingdom barring Julius, but hates the stuffiness of the country and preferred living in the wilderness most of the year to live in peace and become stronger over being a captain. She only takes up the position after Fuegoleon is left in a coma. When Nacht recruits her to be part of the Spade assault force, she states that she doesn't care that Yami and Vangeance got captured but chooses to join regardless to test herself after months of training.
  • Heroic RRoD:
    • Using Calidos Brachium: Purgatory to try to defeat the elves in a last-ditch effort injures them quite a bit but fully depletes her mana, leaving her unable to even move. Luckily, Asta and Zora come back and manage to save her.
    • Because her Hellfire Incarnate form brings her closer to mana itself the longer she uses it parts of Mereoleona's body begins to lose its shape during the fight with Lucifero, taking her out of the battle.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She seems to have saved Asta and Zora from the elves as she stayed back to buy them time, though she claims it's because they will get in her way. They come back to rescue her anyway.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Despite her very short temper, Mereoleona is quite emotionally intelligent and knows just the right words to say to motivate someone, comparing Noelle to her legendary mother and bringing up to Asta his dream of becoming the Wizard King to help them get through the Yultim Volcano.
    • Despite being a royal, she doesn't care at all about lineage and respects anyone so long as they're strong. This outlook is what earns her the respect of Zora, who hates aristocrats.
    • In spite of her very short temper and hot-bloodedness, she is a royal and can be well-mannered when need be. In an anime-exclusive she gave a pregnant Acier a bouquet of flowers when meeting to discuss her imminent Death by Childbirth, and gave Yami a bottle of sake as thanks for visiting a comatose Fuegoleon.
  • Hot-Blooded: She's even more hot-blooded than Asta at times.
  • Idiot Hair: She has a tuft of hair sticking out from the top of her head. While Hot-Blooded with a love for fighting, she's very competent and much more intelligent than she appears.
  • In-Series Nickname: She's called "Sisgoleon" by Yami, who thought that her family followed a "-goleon" naming pattern.
  • Iron Lady: Mereoleona is an aggressive, tough-as-nails woman respected and feared by even the other Magic Knights Captains for her incredible strength. She unintentionally intimidates the king with her demeanor, and leads the Royal Knights to attack the Eye of the Midnight Sun with the intent to slaughter them all.
  • It's Personal: She vows to make the Eye of the Midnight Sun pay for heavily injuring Fuegoleon, her younger brother.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She acts very harsh, but she truly wants to help the Crimson Lion Kings to rise again after Fuegoleon's fall. As Yami notes during the Hot Springs Training Camp Arc, she dragged him and Charlotte to the hot springs so her members are able to model after them. She also gives Noelle advice and encouragement without being prompted to.
  • Just Toying with Them: She easily has the upper hand throughout her fight with Rhya and could've defeated him at any time, but chose not to until she could see if he would prove a challenge for her. He does not.
  • Kill It with Fire: With Mana Zone she unleashes a barrage of fire that burns Rhya alive, and would have killed him had he not been reincarnated a second time into a stronger form.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: She's very skilled at hand-to-hand combat, incorporating her flame magic into her physical blows to unleash Elemental Punches that completely burn through other spells. Zora even notes that she's more of a fighter than any mage that he's ever seen.
  • The Lad-ette: She's an aggressive, powerful warrior with a love for sake. She spends most of the year in the wilderness hunting wild animals because she hates the stuffiness of the Royal Capital.
  • Large Ham: During a good fight, Mereoleona will ham herself up with her enjoyment and have a wide smile as she unleashes her power to pummel an opponent.
  • Last Stand: She tries to sacrifice herself to save Asta and Zora when they're attacked by five reincarnated elves, fighting them all and unleashing her strongest spell which does considerable damage to them. Luckily, she's saved by Asta and Zora, using a combination of Trap Magic and the anti-magic swords to reflect back the elves' combined attack back at them.
  • Lava Is Boiling Kool-Aid: Thanks to her strong Mana Skin, she's seen bathing in lava like a hot springs when Nacht recruits her to join the special assault force that'll attack the Spade Kingdom.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Even in this cast, Mereoleona is noted to be psychotically fast, and she loves to throw out brutal hits. Using Mana Zone, she can even maneuver mid-air and unleash a barrage of fire punches from any direction. In Hellfire Incarnate, she uses incredible speed and power to give a beatdown on a giant demon.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Subverted. Mereoleona has quite long red hair, but is probably the most tomboyish woman in the story. Suitably, after the time skip she's seen with a much shorter hairstyle.
  • Machiavelli Was Wrong: Played With. Her squad is scared of her, but it's a more of a reverent fear than one of failing her — the kind of fear that Machiavelli recommended and it works with her dragging the Crimson Lion Kings to the Yultim Volcano for some much-needed training.
  • Made of Iron: She can take incredible amounts of damage without flinching or showing much injury whatsoever. This is separate from the Super-Toughness she gets from Mana Skin.
  • Master of All: She's a powerful mage and an incredibly strong hand-to-hand fighter. The Guidebook gives her a 5/5 in Physical Strength, Magic Amount, and Magic Control.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name includes "mere", French for "mother", and she takes a harsh yet nurturing role to Noelle as well as the Crimson Lion Kings. And "Leona" comes from "leo" which is Latin for "lion".
  • More Deadly Than the Male: She's the strongest woman in the Clover Kingdom and, in terms of sheer strength, more powerful than her Captain younger brother, which is expressed in her brutal melee fighting style compared to his ranged one. And in comparison to the more calm, collected Fuegoleon, Mereoleona is much more aggressive and merciless, intent on killing all her enemies. As she points out, her family is one of lions and "Among lions, the females are the ones who hunt!!"
  • A Mother to Her Men: Takes a harsh yet nurturing role to the Crimson Lion Kings as well as Asta and especially Noelle, telling her that she isn't the same little girl who was bullied by her siblings and motivating her to surpass her legendary mother with her own strength. She tosses Asta and Zora out of the room to save them while she fights five newly-reincarnated elves by herself to buy them some time.
  • Multi-Directional Barrage: Her spell Calidos Brachium Barrage. She uses Mana Zone to pummel Rhya with flame blasts from many directions, so much that he doesn't have enough time to use his copied recovery spells.
  • Naked First Impression: When she first meets Nacht when he seeks her out to join the special assault force to invade the Spade Kingdom, she emerges without a care despite bathing at the time. Nacht looks away and asks her to put clothes on.
  • Nature Hero: According to Zora's research, she spends three hundred days a year living in the wilderness because she finds the capital too "stifling". She lives off wild game she hunts herself and surrounds herself in large amounts of natural mana, and he thinks this lifestyle is a factor in her tremendous power.
  • No Indoor Voice: Almost everything she says is through shouting.
  • No-Sell:
    • She is capable of punching and burning through spells. Her battle against Rhya included him throwing every spell he knows at her (including Mereoleona's own), but she burns through them and never receives any damage.
    • This is Played for Laughs when she no sells Zora's stinkbug prank.
  • Not Afraid to Die: Mereoleona throws Asta and Zora out of the room so that she can fight five newly reincarnated elves so they may escape. She then boldly challenges them to try and kill her, telling them that they won't kill all humans if they can't even kill her. Even when she exhausts all her mana in one last attack and cannot move, Mereoleona still tells them to come at her and finish it.
  • One-Woman Army: Due to her immense strength, she's able to hold back and give trouble to five elves, all of whom are much more powerful than most mages. When her and the others return from the Shadow Palace, she says to knock out all the remaining elves, with Yami half-joking that she's more dangerous than the rest of them combined. She alone is enough to fight against one of the Spade Kingdom's ancient demons, with all the Magic Knights who were currently in the Clover Kingdom unable to fight against the other one until Asta showed up to save them.
  • Panthera Awesome: She refers to herself as a lioness and it shows in her magic, which she uses to shape her flames into a lion's paw.
  • Personality Powers: Only fitting that an aggressive, Hot-Blooded mage has flame magic to punch out destructive fists of fire.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: She has the magical power to unleash gigantic fire blasts from many directions, engulf a huge room in blue flames strong enough to burn giant blocks of stone, and punch out a barrage of fiery punches large enough to engulf a gigantic legendary demon.
  • Physical Goddess: Mereoleona wipes the floor with Rhya who's the strongest member of the Third Eye and an elf, whose race is so powerful that they were worshipped as gods in the past. Rhya wonders if she's even human and before she burns him alive he notes that her strength is an unknown human one.
  • Pitiful Worms: Calls members of the Eye of the Midnight Sun "ants" before she attacks them in revenge for Fuegoleon while invading their hideout.
  • Playing with Fire: She can even climb up a volcano without breaking a sweat. Her flames are hot enough to burns other people's spells, even water and other flames.
  • Power Hair: The story's harshest Iron Lady cuts her long leonine hair short after the time skip.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: Her strongest spells have her unleash a brutal barrage of flame Elemental Punches.
  • Real Men Eat Meat: Gender-Inverted, being probably the most "masculine" woman in the story. Mereoleona found the Royal Capital too stuffy for a taste, so for 300 days in the year she lives in the wilderness and eats the meat of wild beasts. This, combined with steeping herself in the natural world's mana, caused her Mana Skin to reach a higher level and is a factor in her inhuman power.
  • Red Baron: The Uncrowded, Undefeated Lioness.
  • Refusal of the Call: She was born a royal and sought out to be the next captain of the Crimson Lion Kings due to her power and being the eldest child of the Vermillion family. Despite this, she refused the position as she wanted to become stronger by herself and disliked life in the Royal Capital due to its politics and stuffiness. As a result, she lives in the wilderness most of the year where she trains herself and lives off the land. She returns to the kingdom as replacement captain of the Crimson Lion Kings due to Fuegoleon being in a coma and to enact revenge against the Eye of the Midnight Sun for injuring her brother.
  • Relative Button: Grievously hurting her younger brother Fuegoleon causes Mereoleona to vow to make the Eye of the Midnight Sun pay, with her leading the Royal Knights to raid their hideout.
  • Rousing Speech: Gives one to the Royal Knights before they storm the Eye of the Midnight Sun's stronghold:
"We are going to be attacking their stronghold, so our enemy will do everything they can to stop us. Some of us may fall, but we will be victorious! We are going to give our all in this battle! Any fools who fail to do so will be taken out by me before we even get to the enemy's stronghold! Are you ready?!"
  • Royal Blood: Mereoleona comes from the Vermillion Family, one of the royal families of the Clover Kingdom.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: She has absolutely zero issue stripping down for a mixed hot spring until Sol uses her magic to make a wall to prevent the men from seeing them. She apparently expected the hot springs to be co-ed. When Nacht seeks her out, she emerges fully naked without any hesitation, with Nacht looking away and asking her to put on some clothes.
  • Sibling Rivalry: With Fuegoleon as children — the day before she received her grimoire, Mereoleona and Fuegoleon got into a fight after she mocked the Magic Knights, which destroyed part of the Vermillion Estate and came to be known as "Hot-Blooded Tuesday". As adults it's friendly, with the two deeply admiring one another and seeing each other as stronger than the other.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: With Fuegoleon. He's calm, reserved and dutiful. She's wild, free-spirited and passionate.
  • Simple, yet Awesome: Zora observes that Mereoleona's fighting style is this. She concentrates an immense amount of magic power in her fists, enveloping them in her Flame Magic. He notes that it's simple but insanely powerful, and she uses it to punch and burn through all of Rhya's spells and unleash so many rapid punches that he doesn't have enough time to heal from them, easily wiping the floor with a member of the Third Eye as a result.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: She drags her entire squad plus Asta, Noelle, Yuno, Yami, and Charlotte to a mana dense volcano to train. She then gives Asta some vague advice and leaves him to figure out how to climb up the volcano on his own. It actually works and he ends up figuring how to better control his Black Asta form.
  • Slasher Smile: A rare heroic example — Mereoleona sports one throughout her fight with Rhya as she incinerates every spell he throws at her, taunts him to be more of a challenge for her, and burns him alive with her barrage of flaming punches.
  • Smarter Than You Look:
    • Yami notes that, in spite of her aggressive and short-tempered personality, she's very sharp. She forced Yami, Charlotte, and Yuno to come to the Yultim Volcano Trail to serve as examples for how to use Mana Skin. Charlotte was chosen specifically for her poor affinity with the volcano, making her a prime example of how to use it, and Yuno for motivating the younger guys around his age.
    • She also has the emotional intelligence to know what to properly say to motivate someone. When Asta is unable to climb up the Yultim Volcano thanks to his lack of Mana Skin, Mereoleona tells Asta that his luck only brought him this far and goads him into continuing to climb, stating that it's impossible for an idiot who doesn't even know his own limits. She also points out how different Noelle is from her mother, and tells her to surpass her by overcoming her flaws with her own strength.
  • The Social Darwinist: A benevolent one. Despite being royalty, she states that she doesn't care whether someone is a noble or peasant so long as they're strong. She even states that she doesn't care that Yami and Vangeance got captured but is more curious about the lot that nabbed them. This belief of hers is what earns her Zora's respect despite her social status.
Mereoleona (to Asta and Zora): Royals, peasants, differences in rank mean nothing to me. It's all about whether you're strong or weak. You two are here because you're strong, right? Don't disappoint me.
  • The Squadette: Makes sense that an aggressive, brawler woman would become the captain of a Magic Knights squad, and the only named female member of the group. Interestingly, she didn't become a captain until Fuegoleon became comatose because she wanted to become stronger on her own in the wilderness for most of the year.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Mereoleona stands above most of the cast at 178 cmnote  and is even acknowledged by Rhya as beautiful, noting that it's a shame that she's a royal.
  • Strong and Skilled: She is brutal and direct in her fighting style, but Zora notes that her Mana Skin technique is top-notch and she can even use Mana Zone to amplify her physical ability and give herself free movement in six directions.
  • Super Mode: Flame Magic: Hellfire Incarnate. It envelops herself in flames as if her body is turned into mana itself and increases the heat the longer she uses it, letting her move at incredible speed and defeat a legendary demon.
  • Super-Speed: She's noted by Zora to have inhumane speed, which makes it look like she's Flash Stepping in a fight. With Mana Zone she can even maneuver mid-air.
  • Super-Strength: She has inhumane strength, as noted by Rhya. She sends Black Asta flying with a simple punch and keeps up with Vetto in a fist fight.
  • Super-Toughness: That Mana Skin of hers is incredible armor thanks to spending most of the year basking in natural mana. Rhya threw everything he had at it but couldn't even slow her down.
  • Talk to the Fist: Before their "fight" really begins, she punches Rhya while he's talking, sending him flying into a wall in the Eye of the Midnight Sun hideout.
  • Technicolor Fire: Her strongest spell, Calidos Brachium Purgatory, has her punch a giant blast of blue flames that engulfs the entire area.
  • Terrible Artist: According to the Volume 12 Assorted Questions Brigade, she's the worst artist among the characters.
  • To Be a Master: Despite already being one of the strongest mages in the Clover Kingdom, she desires to be as powerful as possible, so much so that she spends most of the year in the wilderness training, eating wild game, and seeping herself in the world's natural mana, which are all factors in her incredible power. After learning that there were beings (which were summoned by Zagred) that even her magic couldn't work on, she had been training for six months. Nacht recruits Mereoleona to test her training results — fighting against the gigantic legendary demon released onto the Spade resistance.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Mereoleona was the Tomboy to Acier's Girly Girl, being a hostile, aggressive woman with a brutal, physical magic in contrast to Acier, a devoted mother renowned for her beauty and the grace and dignity of her magic.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Flashbacks show that she wore her hair in this style in the past, and she's an unladylike brawler.
  • Tomboyish Voice: Along with her aggressive, short-tempered personality, Mereoleona has a deep voice in the anime.
  • Tomboy Princess: Mereoleona is a royal from the distinguished House of Vermillion, and is addressed by others as "Lady". Despite this, she's a short-tempered woman who prefers living in the wilderness over the stuffy Royal Capital, and has by-far the most brutal, brawler fighting style of the entire cast.
  • Tough Love: Mereoleona definitely doesn't believe in being nice to show her affection, instead using her Brutally Honest and aggressive nature to motivate those she cares about to improve. After scolding the Crimson Lion Kings for their annual ranking, she tells them to prove to her their strength and brings them to an active volcano to do so. She also bluntly tells Noelle how her sloppy magic is nothing like her legendary mother's, but to overcome her weakness and surpass her mother with her own inner strength.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Her eyes have a noticeable slant to them and she's a proud, powerful woman.
  • Warrior Princess: Royalty of the kingdom, with the Vermillions having a claim to the Clover throne, and by-far the strongest female warrior, if not the strongest warrior period, amongst the Magic Knights' ranks.
  • Women Prefer Strong Men: Mereoleona is an inhumanly powerful female mage and possibly the strongest Magic Knight in the kingdom barring Julius, and according to the Volume 18 Questions Brigade she likes a man who could survive fighting her in mortal combat.
  • The Worf Effect: Despite she's one of the strongest warriors of the Clover Kingdom, she's no more than a Curb Stomp Cushion in front of Lucifero, who easily shrugs her attacks off until parts of her arm gets burnt out and she almost gets smashed into the ground if not for Yuno. All to demonstrate that Lucifero is on a whole another level, even when "merely" 50% manifested.
  • World's Strongest Woman: Mereoleona is stated to be the most powerful woman in the Clover Kingdom and possibly the strongest Magic Knight. Her potential was such that she could easily have become Wizard King if she wished to. When she curb-stomps Rhya, he notes that her massive power is not just from being royalty but also an unknown human strength.
  • Worthy Opponent: Her and Vetto acknowledge each other as this, with the two nearly matched in power, reflexes, and speed.
  • Wreathed in Flames:
    • Using Mana Zone when fighting Rhya surrounds her in fire mana before she brutally burns him alive.
    • After training during the six month time skip, she learns the spell Hellfire Incarnate, which envelops herself in Flame Magic as if she has become mana.
  • You Fight Like a Cow: Throughout her fight with Rhya, Mereoleona shouts "Next!" to see if he can prove a challenge for her as she burns through each of his spells. He doesn't, and he easily gets burnt alive by her.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: Mereoleona tells Zora and Asta to run from the reincarnated elves they're fighting and seals the passage behind them. The elves mock her for trying this, to which she responds that she had no intention of losing and just didn't want the others getting in her way.

  • Blow You Away: He uses Air Magic, unleashing blasts of air that can disperse enemy attacks.
  • Combination Attack: In the anime, he forms a sphere of his Air Magic with Leopold's Flame Magic covering it against golems in the Yultim Volcano.
  • Full-Contact Magic: How he uses his Air Magic in contrast to other mages in the story. The elf that possesses him unleashes it mostly with palm blows.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: His fighting style is shown to be this when he's taken over by an elf, adopting a martial arts stance and unleashing air blasts from his movements.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Not only does his last name include "air", but "luft" is German for air as well.
    • Randall is an English name with the phonetic element "rand", meaning shield. His Air Magic is used to disperse spells.
  • Sharing a Body: He has the soul of an elf.

Voiced by: KENN (Japanese), Austin Tindle (English), Alexis Tipton (English, young)note

Debut: Chapter 2 (Manga), Episode 20 (Anime)

Magic Attribute: Flame

"If you're not prepared to get hurt, then stay off the battlefield!!"

A fiery and hot-blooded young man that follows his older brother to learn from him. He also considers Asta his new rival.

Uses Flame Magic just like his older brother, forming blasts of fire.

  • Animal Battle Aura: When fighting the giant spider in the Yultim Volcano in the anime, he manifests a leonine aura of fire.
  • Animal Motifs: Lions, specifically lion cubs as he's much younger and less experienced than his older siblings.
  • Anime Hair: Red colored, wild, and spiky. It becomes slightly more reasonable after the time skip.
  • Area of Effect: His spell True Flame Magic: Crimson Eruption. He creates a giant spell array that unleashes a gigantic blast of fire, using it to burn everything within his magic circle to injure a hidden Sivoir.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Leopold is the youngest of his siblings and the squad filled with older men.
  • Bearer of Bad News: When Fuegoleon awakens, Leopold is the one to tell him that he's no longer the squad's captain and Mereoleona took over while he was comatose.
  • Big Brother Worship:
    • He admires Fuegoleon a lot, to the point of apologizing to him for not being strong enough in the tournament. When Salamander chooses his brother, Leopold thinks it's only natural.
    • He also looks up to Mereoleona, but in her case, he respects her raw power, in contrast with Fuegoleon who Leopold admires for his personality and views.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: He has short and noticeably large eyebrows.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: A brash, Hot-Blooded Magic Knight who wants to become manly.
  • Braids of Action: A Rare Male Example. He ties part of his long hair in a braid, and is a brash, promising young Magic Knight.
  • The Cavalry: He and the rest of the forces who were training in Elysia join up with the Magic Knights and Resistance in the Spade Kingdom to help them fight against the devils released from the underworld and the Dark Triad.
  • Character Development:
    • He goes from mocking the Golden Dawn for harboring the peasant Yuno to being impressed by Asta's resolve, proclaiming him his rival and, later on, Yuno as well for being Asta's rival too.
    • Leopold starts off as having feelings of self-doubt due to being overshadowed by his older siblings. Floga's recognition that Leopold has a strength of endurance allows him to push past his feelings and gain the confidence needed on the battlefield.
  • Combination Attack: In the anime, he forms a sphere of his Air Magic with Leopold's Flame Magic covering it against golems in the Yultim Volcano.
  • Cute Little Fangs: He has enlarged canine teeth that contribute to his leonine-like appearance.
  • Determinator: Very much this. He acknowledges that although he isn't as talented as his older siblings, with their presence he's gained a strength of endurance that's pushed him to become stronger. This shows during his battle with Sivoir, enduring his attacks to make a giant array surrounding his enemy all without him noticing.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: His hair (noticeably his bangs) becomes shorter after the six month time skip he spends training in the Heart Kingdom.
  • Facial Markings: He gets one similar to his brother's on his forehead as proof of his resolution to become the Wizard King. He also has the same red marks around the eyes as his siblings.
  • Fiery Redhead: Red hair seems to be a trait in his family, and he is very loud and active.
  • Fireballs: His spell Exploding Flames manifests multiple fireballs that are launched in different directions.
  • Foil: To Noelle. Both are the youngest of their royal siblings and try to surpass them. Noelle uses Water Magic and Leopold uses Flame Magic. Leopold has a good relationship with his siblings, while Noelle is mocked by hers for her bad magic control. While Noelle keeps many of her emotions to herself, Leopold, on the other hand, is much more emotional and hot-blooded.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Him and Asta becomes rivals to be the Wizard King after Leopold is impressed by Asta's strength at the Distinguished Service Ceremony. They're friends, with the two greatly respecting each other and competing whenever an opportunity comes up.
  • Hand Blast:
    • His Spiral Flames spell generates tornado-like blasts of fire from his extended hands.
    • In the anime, when fighting the golems in the Yultim Volcano, he shows that he can fire a beam from his hand, similar to his brother's Sol Linea.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: In spite of his hot-blooded brashness, at times Leopold is overcome by self-doubt and hesitates in battle. And it's later revealed that his lack of self-confidence comes from living in the shadow of his older siblings all his life. Over the time skip, Leopold's training with Floga helps him overcome this, coming to realize that he has a strength of endurance.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite his air of confidence, being a Hot-Blooded royal who even disparaged peasants in his introduction, Leopold suffers from bouts of low self-confidence, having been overshadowed by his elder siblings all his life and comparing himself to them, thinking of how much stronger they are whenever he gets stronger.
  • Honorary True Companion: He becomes this to some of the Black Bulls over the six month time skip, defeating Spade Kingdom forces with them and Mimosa.
  • Hot-Blooded: Very passionate and brash, acting without thinking. Yuno refers to him as another muscle-head like Asta.
  • I Got Bigger: He gets much taller after the six month time skip, with Asta noting so and jealous. Leopold states that it's only natural for him, being Mereoleona and Fuegoleon's little brother.
  • In-Series Nickname: He's called "Leo" by people he's friendly with like Asta and his cousin Mimosa.
  • I Want to Be a Real Man: Leopold highly values manliness, and sees his brother as an ideal man and wants to surpass him. This is Played for Laughs when Yami convinces Leopold to peep in the women's bath by telling him it's what a man would do and capitalizing on his desire to surpass Fuegoleon.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Leopold can be quite brash at times. When Asta leaves by himself to fight against the undead invasion, he follows him without listening to Fuegoleon's plan.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Like his older brother, Leopold has long hair and is attractive in appearance, although on the youthful side.
  • Mangst: Despite his hot-bloodedness and enthusiasm, Leopold is deeply insecure about his inferiority to his siblings, and even when growing stronger he cannot help but compare himself to them.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Leopold as in Lion, much like his older brother Leon, once again forming the Crimson Lion correlation.
    • Leopold is a modern form of the Germanic name "Luitbald", with two stems that mean "people" and "brave". He's a courageous, brash Magic Knight who defends the Clover Kingdom.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Although Leopold is a royal and powerful mage, growing up he was overshadowed by his charismatic brother Fuegoleon and powerful sister Mereoleona, causing him to struggle with self-doubt.
  • Playing with Fire: He mostly uses Flame Magic to unleash streams and bursts of fire. After training for six months in the Heart Kingdom, he can use True Flame Magic.
  • Relative Button: Rades tricking Fuegoleon into getting teleported causes Leopold to call him a freak and angrily question him about his brother's whereabouts. Leopold promptly joins Asta in fighting the Eye of the Midnight Sun when he cools down.
  • The Rival: Declares himself to be one to Asta after seeing him fight at the Distinguished Service Ceremony.
  • Runic Magic: After training in the Heart Kingdom, he learns to use spell arrays, boosting the power of his Flame Magic and letting him cast several spells at once.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: He is very different from his brother, being more loud and aggressive than the calm and careful Leon. This is averted with his sister, but Leopold has less bloodlust.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Although he acts brash and hot-blooded most of the time, he's smarter than he appears. While fighting Sivoir, he uses confrontational spells to distract him while he makes a massive array of runes that Sivoir doesn't notice until it's too late. Sivoir's magic allowed him to see in all directions and also hide himself from Leopold, while still sniping him from concealment. So Leopold pretended to just fire away ineffectually, but was also secretly surrounding the entire forest they were fighting inside of with rune array. Since Sivoir was focused on Leopold's smaller-scale attacks, he didn't perceive the huge array until it was too late. At that point, Leopold didn't need to know Sivoir's exact location; he just burned everything and Sivoir got caught in the blast.
  • Stock Shōnen Hero: Leopold plays this straighter than even Asta despite being a major supporting character. He has much spikier red hair, fire powers, a Hot-Blooded demeanor, desires to become the Wizard King, and has gained a strength of endurance from being overshadowed by his elder siblings that's pushed him to become stronger. Despite this, he interestingly becomes one of Asta's rivals, and his qualities contrast him with the more cool-headed, composed Yuno, Asta's main rival.
  • Stock Shōnen Rival: Subverted, with him being Asta's second rival. While he does come from a prilveged background, personality-wise and power-wise he's basically a Stock Shōnen Hero who just so happens to be the rival to another Stock Shōnen Hero.
  • Successful Sibling Syndrome: Leopold is revealed to have this. He's fully aware of Mereoleona and Fuegoleon's strength but has been compared by others with his sister's power and brother's charisma, causing him to have self-doubt. He manages to overcome this when Floga tells him to appreciate his own strength, pointing out that he has a strength that endures.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After the six month time skip, he learns to create an array with natural mana runes to enhance his Flame Magic, turning it into True Flame Magic. And does so on a truly massive scale. Several of the people of the Heart Kingdom, where the use of natural mana runes was invented, say they've never seen even the Spirit Guardians make an array as large as Leopold's.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: He starts off as being dismissive of peasants, insulting Golden Dawn for accepting Yuno as a member. By the end of the Royal Capital Arc, he's changed his views and sees Asta as a worthy rival.
  • Two Girls to a Team: Gender-Inverted. Of the six Magic Knights in the Heart Kingdom who fight against Vanica and her Dark Disciples (Noelle, Nero, Mimosa, Leopold, Luck, and Charmy), Leopold and Luck are the only two males.
  • Unknown Rival:
    • Played for Laughs. After seeing Asta fight he declares him his rival. Asta accepts but also asks Leopold what his name is.
    • He considers himself to be Yuno's rival as well because they're both Asta's. Yuno, on the other hand, doesn't care.
  • Wreathed in Flames: He can use his Flame Magic to do this, using it to heat up the hot spring to compete with Yuno.

Debut: Chapter 51 (Manga), Episode 36 (Anime)

Magic Attribute: Flame

The spirit of flame that serves Fana and later Fuegoleon.

  • Ambiguous Gender: Unlike with the other two spirits shown so far, nothing about its gender has been revealed.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: The only apparent criteria it uses to pick its masters is by judging if they are strong enough to be worthy to wield its power. As such, it picked two very different people as its owners such as Fana (a violent terrorist hellbent of reducing her enemies to ashes) and Fuegoleon (a proud and dignified Magic Knight that worries for the lives of the people of his country regardless of their social status).
  • Elemental Embodiment: It's the flame spirit.
  • Empathic Shapeshifter: Salamander seems to have its appearance change based on its user. With Fana, it is normally a small lizard but can grow into a monstrous humanoid dragon. When used by Fuegoleon, it's leaner and more serpentine.
  • Fiery Salamander: In its small form, it resembles a small, winged fire reptile. It upgrades to a dragon once it reappears in the Forest of Witches.
  • Giant Flyer: It can transform to a giant dragon when Fana uses her third eye. This is downplayed when Fuegoleon becomes its new owner, as, while still bigger than a human, it doesn't reach a size as big as the one it had under Fana's ownership.
  • Meaningful Name: It's the spirit of flame, and it's named Salamander.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Although it is specified to be a spirit, its design and powers make it the closest equivalent to a classic Western dragon.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Salamander is reputed to have the most offensive power of the spirits, and it definitely shows when it's used by Fana, forming gigantic fireballs that can destroy whole forests.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Even in its smaller, lizard-like form, it is still able to present a challenge for the likes of Nozel.
  • Playing with Fire: It is the spirit of flame and its flames are hot enough to melt Nozel's Mercury Magic.
  • Shoulder-Sized Dragon: Though it is a spirit instead of a proper dragon, it plays this straight during its first appearance, even being situated in Fana's shoulder for most of the fight.
  • Sleep-Mode Size: When used by Fana, it is usually small enough to sit on her shoulder. But when she uses her magic, it becomes much more monstrous.
  • The Voiceless: Unlike Sylph and Undine, Salamander has yet to speak and instead mentally communicates with its users.
  • Your Size May Vary: Through its appearances, it has been portrayed with different sizes depending of the magic power of its masters. In its first appearance, it is no bigger than a housecat and resides in Fana's shoulder (while still being a strong being); later, when Fana attacks the Forest of Witches, it is shown as a Giant Flyer easily able to transport her, and it becomes even bigger when Fana displays her full power. Later, upon its reappearance under Fuegoleon's ownership, it appears as bigger than in its debut, but not as huge as in the Forest of Witches.
