Solutions: WIP

WARNING: Endless spoilers ahead for various media

  1. VideoGame.Badland: The "hidden achievements" are told to you right in the settings under "achievements". Object/Applied Phlebotinum happens to be labeled according to its name
  2. Trivia.Battle Beyond The Stars: Completely Different Title:
  3. Literature. The White Tiger: Animal Motifs: The white tiger. The "tiger" part representing the idea of strength and ruthlessness, while the "white" refers to willingness to be different from others and break from all conventions. A few other characters have animal motifs related to them, most notably the landlords of the village of Laxmangarh. Has nothing to do with self-descriptiveness, just who the book is about outside of the overarching theme
  4. Characters.Fire Emblem On Forums Solrise Academy: Her Arte, Telekinesis, lets her use, well, telekinesis to avoid attacks and reduce damage taken to herself. Object/Applied Phlebotinum happens to be labeled according to its name
  5. YMMV.Caillou: In "Caillou Falls Off Of His Bike", Caillou falls off of his bike and his knee drops a very tiny drip of blood which can be scary for children. Describes the Inciting Incident/beginning of the story, but not what it's actually about
  6. WebAnimation.Half Genie Soldier: Freudian Threat: '½ Genie Soldier Threatens To Castrate Demoman'. It's Exactly What It Says on the Tin.
Half-Genie Soldier: I will rip off your dick and crap in your dick-hole! Seems correct?
  7. ArtisticLicenseEconomics.Video Games: Random Encounters provide an extremely high, if not unlimited, supply of gold. Inflation should have wiped out any and all economies years ago. Especially in any town surrounded by Gold Golems, which are Exactly What It Says on the Tin and are a walking retirement fund. One has to appeal to Gameplay and Story Segregation to make it coherent. "Labeled object" misuse + how is anyone supposed to know that they're a "retirement fund" based on the title alone?
  8. Fridge. How I Met Your Mother: Also, as the title implies, Ted hasn't actually met the kids' mother yet. So he probably hasn't mentioned her name.Stella was said to have been a back-up mother—but wouldn't the kids have known? Especially considering that Stella came with a daughter—if she and Ted had gotten married, the kids would have known it since they'd undoubtedly know their own sister. Describes something that only makes sense in context; how is the specific timeline of the series immediately apparent?
  9. WMG.Uchu Sentai Kyuranger: Bippy. This is a corruption of "bipi", the Hawaiian translation of "ox". Bippy will come from a Sci-Fi Counterpart Culture of Polynesia. Bullbot. Retaining Champ's civilain suit, he is a sentient bull robot. Ferdinand. Will be a very pacifistic ranger, with a personality somewhat similar to Danny, who only becomes a ranger because of circumstances, and will often try and talk down the Monster of the Week and avoid fighting as much as possible. Decomposite Character: A pro wrestler with cybernetic implants in order to take on robot opponents in the ring. The Champ suit is one of his past opponents. Professor Anton just the good side, the other one is already in the Big Bad Ensemble gets Adapted Out as a result. Object/Applied Phlebotinum happens to be labeled according to its name
  10. Funny.Mario Plus Rabbids Kingdom Battle: How does the disaster all start? The Rabbids still have their "Time Washing Machine" from the Travel in Time spinoffs (which is Exactly What It Says on the Tin and looks exactly like you'd expect it to look like; a washing machine with what looks like parts of the DeLorean time machine stuck on it) and end up in an inventor's basement who's a huge fan of the Mario series. The Rabbids get out and begin goofing off with the assorted merchandise until, well, you can guess where this is going, right? Yep, things go to chaos when one plays with the inventor's latest creation; a merging device called the Supa-Merge, which they shoot at various Rabbids and merge them with whatever they were playing with, but a stray shot at the Time Washing Machine causes it to malfunction and travels to the Mario universe with all the Rabbids inside it. Only makes sense in context; what is a "Time Washing Machine" exactly? A washing machine-time machine combo? A time machine disguised as a washing machine?
  11. Fridge.Brandon Rogers: Read this on a YouTube comment, one of Blah Blah's puppet friends is Percy the Pervert, a sex maniac that constantly humps everything, even Blah Blah. This goes from Black Comedy to straight-up horror when you learn that Blah Blah's show is all a hallucination and the puppets are people in working in the asylum he's in. Meaning... Even worse, the doctor later confirms they do this. "We never diddle our patients, even if they ask us to." Seems to fit better under Names to Run Away from Really Fast
  12. WarriorCats.Tropes 0 To G: The aptly-named The Darkest Hour, as well as various other points throughout the series, like Dawn, or the later books in Omen of the Stars. Darkest Hour describes a general event and is a common term, we don't know why it's the darkest hour
  13. VideoGame.Metroid Zero Mission: The Beginning: Zero Mission. Shaped Like Itself + generalization
  14. Literature. Please Dont Tell My Parents Ive Got Henchmen: Surprisingly Dangerous Weevil Man. He used to just be "Weevil Man." Guess why it was changed. Names to Run Away from Really Fast
  15. NeverwinterNights2.Tropes S To Z: In the expansion pack Mask of the Betrayer, your character is inflicted with a curse called 'the Spirit-eater', which requires them to periodically nourish themselves by devouring spirits. Initially it only works on elementals, fey and incorporeal undead, but you can learn how to direct the hunger at souls and corporeal undead. Only makes sense in context; who's "them"? "Spirit-eater magnet" might be more self-descriptive, but even then it's not a title, just an object.
  16. GameBreaker.Enter The Gungeon: One up from this - the Mega Douser has a similar and arguably safer synergy with one of the hidden playable classes, the Robot. It starts with the Battery Bullets passive, which electrifies all bullet-based projectiles, and is also immune to shock damage from water puddles, unlike other characters. The Mega Douser is a super soaker that drenches the room with massive puddles of water. Electrified water deals constant damage to all grounded enemies. You do the math. The only downside is that it doesn't hit airborne enemies, but since you aren't relegated to a tiny spot in the room, you can pick them off easily, especially with the hidden accuracy bonus given by Battery Bullets. Only makes sense in context + labeled object/AP
  17. Series. The Joe Schmo Show: Once a Season: Each season has one gay stereotype as an Archetypal Character in its cast lineup even though the actors playing them made it clear they were ostensibly straight."Lap of Luxury" had Lance Krall, a half-Vietnamese from Texas, as the incredibly campy Cuban fashion designer Kip with the outfits, wrist movements and everything. "Last Chance for Love" had Jonathan Torrens as Gerald "The Gotta Be Gay Guy" which is Exactly What It Says on the Tin and led to the season's Schmo Tim coming up with all sorts of theories around his sexuality. "The Full Bounty" had Segun Oduolowu as Lavernius who was only labeled as "The Black Guy" before he was revealed as gay with a boyfriend to Chase, which put the schmo in a problematic situation since LV unknowingly had a Love Triangle going on with Chloe and Skylar gunning for his attention. Only makes sense in context; does "gotta be gay" mean "obviously gay" or "I personally must only go after guys?''
  18. Literature.Jack The Giant Killer: It's a story about a man named Jack who kills giants. Seems correct? That's more or less the plot from what I can tell
  19. Music.Twenty One Pilots:
    • The Three Songs EP, which consists of three songs from Vessel. Doesn't even describe anything beyond "these songs are lumped together"
    • Repeated in the Trench era, where they grouped the pre-release singles on Spotify on an EP simply called My Blood And A Few Others From Trench. Only makes sense in context; what does this title even mean?
  20. Characters.Battle For Dream Island BFDIA Contestants: As of BFB, when referring to the cover title on her first two designs in season 1. ZCE? From what I can tell this just seems like "only makes sense in context"
  21. Literature. The Hardy Boys: The Casefiles series. Iola Morton is Joe's long-running girlfriend in the original series, and gets blown up by terrorists seconds before the opening scene of the first book. Not to mention that some cases would place tension between the brothers, which would often lead into not-so-friendly brawls between them. Later, it also modifies their relationship with the police (which is scarcely a problem in the original series), with an Ascended Extra of sorts in Con Riley as the only officer that takes their skills seriously. They also use guns, bad guys regularly try to Just Shoot Him, and murders and deaths occur much more frequently among side characters and bad guys. And then there are the Assassins, the terrorist group responsible for Iola's aforementioned murder, and are also the most frequently recurring villains in the series who, well...do exactly what you might expect. Labeled object/AP
  22. YMMV.Jon Tron: Apples and Grapes. What starts off as a My Sims review quickly devolves into Surreal Humor culminating in Jon and Peanut Butter Gamer eating, you guessed it, apples and grapes. Even several years later, viewers are baffled. Example admits that that's not actually the entire plot; seems like Intentionally Awkward Title
  23. ToBeLawfulOrGood.Literature: In the fifth Jedi Apprentice book, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are sent to rescue a Jedi named Tal who was injured while trying to mediate a generations-long war on the planet Melida/Daan, where the planet's youth form a third faction (called the Young) trying to stop the bloodshed, and they help the Jedi. Once they rescue Tahl, Qui-Gon says it's time to go, which would leave the Young on their own. Obi-Wan decides to leave the Jedi to help them succeed. (They eventually do, but with tragic cost, and Obi-Wan decides he has to rejoin the Jedi.) Just a cool Squad Nickname; isn't necessarily self-descriptive, and even if it is would just be a regular Military Coup
  24. VideoGame.Thief: The ubiquitous City Watch. Labeled AP/object; vigilantes aren't always that creative, and "City Watch" is often what they're called anyway
  25. PlayingWith. One Joke Fake Show: "Crap" consists of literally the exact same thing in every episode: A character craps on another character, and then they laugh. It's somehow a major success and has lasted for over 20 seasons so far. There are multiple fictional shows, all of which are about the exact same thing in every episode and are Exactly What It Says on the Tin - "Dog Stuck in a Fence", "Zombie Stares at the TV", "The Duh Show", and more are just a few examples. Seems correct
  26. Characters.Runaways Enemies: A cannibalistic giant with a jaw so strong that punching it hurt Xavin's Thing-like fist. Nico defeats him by magically turning him into a vegan.
  27. VideoGame.Duck Game: It's a game about ducks. Describes the characters, but not the plot—this is Never Trust a Title
  28. Creator.Ryan Murphy: American Horror Story: Exactly What It Says on the Tin, the series features a different plotline and setting with several of the same cast members each season, oftentimes playing different characters but occasionally revisiting some from previous seasons. Doesn't even describe the influences of AHS, so it's just a generalization
  29. VideoGame.Doom Eternal: Savagery (faster glory kills), Seek and Destroy (perform glory kills from further away) and Air Control (better air control). Labeled AP/Object
  30. Literature. The Han Solo Adventures: Han doesn't react well to those who mistreat his ship or his friends. And, if Chewie is in danger, Han will flat out murder anyone who tries to keep him from going to his partner's aid. Also, Han will not carry slaves, and anyone trying to make him, as in Han Solo's Revenge, had best run far and fast. This Berserk Button example seems like misuse (just "character doesn't react well to people messing with people they care about/their biggest asset") and the title is just a generalization
  31. Music.Merzbow: Merzbient is a box set full of mostly ambient works. How is anyone supposed to know the "bient" part = ambient? Or "works"?
  32. Webcomic.Demon Blade: A Yowie appears as a minor enemy, simply named "Yowie". The Yara-ma-yha-who also makes an appearance, and there is an area of the Demon Blade universe called Bunyip Desert. Labeled AP/Object
  33. Characters.Light And Dark The Adventures Of Dark Yagami: The Royal Death Note, which can kill anyone, even people whose face or name you don't know, and the Everything Note, which can do everything. Only Forgot About His Powers and several other countermeasures prevent it from being used to full effect. Labeled AP/Object
  34. Film.Holy Flying Circus: Michael, while the church group burns his effigy in the front garden. ZCE
  35. ThisIsGonnaSuck.Western Animation: In "Terry's Friend Dates A Robot", Terry's classmate Howie gets a robotic girlfriend. Unfortunately for him, she's so devoted to him that she'll try to murder anybody who so much as looks at him in a suspicious manner. When Howie tries to tell her "we can still be friends...", Terry can only facepalm before she literally explodes.
    Howie: Wrong thing to say?
Terry: Is it ever the right thing? Describes Inciting Incident/generalization, not actual plot
  36. AnachronicOrder.Literature: Rudyard Kipling does this in The Jungle Book. "Kaa's Hunting" (second story in The Jungle Book) takes place between the first and second halves of "Mowgli's Brothers" (the first story). The third story, "Tiger! Tiger!" picks up from the end of "Mowgli's Brothers", and the remaining stories in the book are unconnected. In The Second Jungle Book the first story "How Fear Came" seems to take place after "Kaa's Hunting" and before the end of "Mowgli's Brothers" from the first book. The remaining Mowgli stories follow on chronologically from the end of "Tiger! Tiger!", but all except the last two are sandwiched between non-series stories. Just to complicate things further, "In the Rukh", the first Mowgli story to be written, which is the last chronologically, doesn't even appear in The Jungle Books, and is so different from the rest that many readers regard it as non-canonical. However, they are all assembled in chronological order in All the Mowgli Stories. Very heavy generalization
  37. ZeroPunctuation.Tropes A To D: Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick:
  38. Characters. The Worlds Finest Assassin: New Life in Another World Bonus: He was given five skills, one of each rank, when most people only have one or, rarely, two. Being an assassin, he gravitates towards those which are Boring, but Practical.
  39. NightmareFuel.CVGW James: Apparently feeling one Twisted Christmas story for 2022 wasn't enough, James wrote "Santa Mario Wants Mario's Liver", a story based on a certain meme, where SMG4 Mario encounters another Mario dressed as Santa who tries to... well, what do you think? Title doesn't indicate that he tries to steal it; he could very well just be daydreaming about it. Seems to fit better under Deceptively Silly Title
  40. Trivia.Toontown Corporate Clash: The 2023 April Toons' update was meant to come out in, well, April. Due to circumstances, however, it ended up being pushed back and becoming MA Ypril Toons. Irrelevant pothole
  41. Sandbox.Paralyzed Stun: Guild Wars avoids this confusion, replacing it with the simple and logical "knocked down", which is exactly what it sounds like. Labeled AP/object
  42. MadScientist.Live Action TV: Linea, a woman known to many as the 'Destroyer of Worlds' for her twisted experiments with genetics and chemistry, and is arguably one of the smartest and most terrifying characters in the entire series - Doctor Frasier and Carter (the latter an example in her own right) both remark that she's so far ahead of them that it's terrifying. After being imprisoned for her crimes, and SG 1 (who'd been locked up unjustly) broke out with her help on the assumption that she was as innocent as they were. She then more or less effortlessly crippled the SGC and left a creepy message behind, saying that it Makes Us Even. Names to Run Away from Really Fast
  43. Fanfic.Jaune Arc Lord Of Hunger: Legends contains all sorts of nods to the various works in the Legends continuity. Generalization/not really that self-descriptive
  44. Characters.Ultraman Gaia: King of Mons is the King of Monsters, commanding two lesser kaijus. Names to Run Away from Really Fast
  45. Exalted.Tropes A To H: Death Ray: The appropriately-named 3rd Edition Celestial-circle spell, Death Ray. It fires a massive red laser that you can hold for several turns which can melt landscape, decimate armies, cut through ships, and write messages into mountains. Labeled AP/object
  46. Film.Shadow Mask: Part of Tien-ming’s outfit as Shadow Mask. Its all in the name. Generalization
  47. Music.Kyuss: "Yeah". Weblinks Are Not Examples, but this song is literally just three seconds of someone saying "Yeah", which is Shaped Like Itself
  48. WebVideo.Brows Held High: Catapult Nightmare: Sleeping Beauty certainly lived up to its name, referring not to Emily Browning so much as the hapless viewer. Kyle is jolted awake when Browning suddenly smashes a chair, complete with Inception horn. Irrelevant joke pothole
  49. Characters.Video Games Awesome: Owns a cat named... Cat. Covered by A Dog Named "Dog"
  50. EnsembleDarkHorse.Comic Strips:
    • Dogbert once summed up this trope while discussing LOUD HOWARD:
Dogbert: A disturbing number of you have requested the return of Loud Howard. Loud Howard is one-dimensional. There is nothing clever or insightful about him. He is simply loud. It is a mystery why anyone would want more of this guy. Shaped Like Itself, since this is all that he does
  51. UsefulNotes.Japanese Pronouns: The Devil from The Cuphead Show! refers to himself this way [through ore-sama]]. Fitting, considering he's... well... the devil. Irrelevant pothole
  52. Fanfic.X Com The Advent Directive: ADVENT adopts the Alloy (made of alien alloys) as its main currency, as a result of the surplus of alien tech on Earth thanks to the Collective. Given ADVENT's stated goal of being a unified human government, it doubles as a Global Currency. Not really self-descriptive
  53. VideoGame.Unreal Tournament 2003: DOM-Junkyard takes place in, well... a junkyard. Shaped Like Itself
  54. Series.Penn And Teller Bullshit: Hypocritical Humor: They do this seemingly every other show, sometimes with a little subtlety but more often by flat-out saying something like "The real Bullshit here is us."
    • In "The Best", which is primarily about the futility of pursuing needless luxury (something which the illusionist duo are surrounded by much of the time in Vegas, mind you), they kick the episode off by flaunting awards and declaring "We're the best!" only to have Robin Leach (who, As You Know, was the host of a descriptively-titled show called Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous back in the day) come on and declare that "'The best' is bullshit." It's a documentary, so it's not really notable
  55. Film.Return Of The Deadly Blade: Gratuitous Ninja: One of the characters is simply called the Ninja of Iga, who is Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Only Known by Their Nickname
  56. AwesomeButImpractical.Eastern RPG: Final Fantasy:
    • Setzer's Gil Toss (aka GP Rain) deals lots of defense-ignoring damage, and is acquired fairly early in the game, not long after he joins you in fact. As its name implies, using this attack costs money. Specifically, it costs the user's level times 30 Gil. As it so happens, this is one of the few Final Fantasy games where money isn't useless, at least up until you get the second airship much later in the game. By the time you can sink all your savings into Gil Toss, other spells and attacks will do just as much damage for much fewer resources. Labeled AP/object + not really self-descriptive
  57. Characters.Elena Of Avalor Elena: The Scepter of Light, of course. It can shoot lasers, cast illusions, and reveal things through walls. Quita Moz indicates that it has more powers, all of which are based on controlling light. Labeled AP/object
  58. Characters.Super Smash Flash 1: Spring Jump: His up special, the Spring Jump. Labeled AP/object
  59. Funny.Music: I Think I Saw a U.F.O by British power metal band Neonfly. Willy Norton sings from the perspective of a conspiracy theorist who thinks he's seen a U.F.O. Seems correct
    I know they're green, I know they're fast
I know that Elvis is alive
They took him more than twenty years ago
  60. YMMV.Star Trek Online: Game-Breaker:
    • Split-Beam Rifles have a secondary attack that allows you to split the energy beam and hit up to 3 separate targets at once. The attack itself does considerable damage (just slightly less than the sniper shot from a sniper rifle) and each beam proceeds to do full damage to each target, making it easy to take out multiple enemies faster instead of just focusing on one enemy at a time. Labeled AP/object
  61. Webcomic.Culture Shock: The strip is about people from the past in the present, and a ninja in America. There's also this bit of dialogue:
Foxx: So what's with the elf ears?
Brooke: I'm an elf. Shaped Like Itself + "culture shock" on its own isn't really self-descriptive
  62. DarthWiki.Operation G: Spin Attack: [Tang's] Rinshuu (Circular Heel) has many variations, so it alone makes around half of his movepool. And let's not get started on his Cursed Wings of Fire Ultimate, where he grows wings of fire and flings himself at the enemy while spinning like a drill. Labeled AP/object
  63. Anime.Flint The Time Detective: Super Ninja, a member of the Great Four, is, well, a ninja. This sets him apart from the other Great Four members, who are more akin to evil time shifters, while Super Ninja is human looking. Irrelevant pothole
  64. Characters.A Certain Dark Railgun And Imagine Breaker: Anti-Magic: His Imagine Breaker is Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Labeled AP/object
  65. VideoGame.Mafia The City Of Lost Heaven: The title says it all, you play someone who becomes part of the Mafia (albeit reluctantly). Not really self-descriptive, especially since it's part of a longer title
  66. VideoGame.Batman Arkham Knight: Mook Medic:
    • The Medics are capable of reviving up to three knocked-out enemies each in a single fight; they can also charge up mooks and make it so that Batman can't hit them without hurting himself. However, if you sabotage their medical gear before starting a fight, it'll explode and knock them out when they try to use it. Albert King can also get mooks back on their feet during his Boss Fight, though calling him a medic would be highly inaccurate. Likewise Killer Croc in his DLC sub quest. Irrelevant pothole
  67. Characters.MCU Cosmic: [The Shadow Realm is] a realm of shadows that literally sucks all color out of everything that enters it. Not necessarily self-descriptive; different works use different meanings for "shadow realm"
  68. Film.Suicide Squad 2016: * Weapon-Based Characterization: Most of the squad members have unique or personalized weapons they use.
  69. ComicBook.Batman Grant Morrison: The Resurrection of Ra's al Ghul, after Greg Rucka killed him off in Death and the Maidens. Generalization; it just tells us that he's being brought back through an Antagonist Title
  70. VideoGame.Command And Conquer Red Alert 2: The German Tank Destroyer does Exactly What It Says on the Tin, dealing massive damage to tanks and other vehicles, but essentially nothing to buildings and infantry (although it can still run over them). Even against tanks, it's vulnerable to flanking thanks to its fixed turret. Labeled AP/object
  71. WebVideo.Welshy: He's Welsh. Shock! Also the titles of his segments. Partial context example, but the "Welsh" part is just Meaningful Name and the two other potholes to EWISOTT on the page ("Why I Like..." and "My Problem With...") reflect how the titles are enticing rather than self-descriptive (we don't know what he thinks about "X" specifically)
  72. Fanfic.Star Kits Prophec 2 The Two Sibinglgs: Valentine's Day Episode: Chapter 4 THE VALENTINS DAY SPECAIL! Stylistic Suck + not really self-descriptive since a lot of episodes are named like this and we can't know the actual plot
  73. Recap.Rune Scape Tuska Comes: Curb-Stomp Battle: The Godless pulled off one of these in the end — although Jagex was already giving them some serious Character Shilling at that point in quests and lore, which played a role in enough players picking the Godless to take down a god. Labeled AP/object + not necessarily self-descriptive
  74. Characters.Sands Of Destruction: The Creator created the world. Duh. Not really relevant; the entries below admit that she has a much bigger role than that
  75. Characters.Final Fantasy XIV The Warrior Of Light: The "Victory" emote features a unique, cheerful pose for every combat class, with one shared pose between all of the Disciple of the Hand and the Disciple of the Land jobs. Labeled object/AP
  76. Series.Beverly Hills 90210: No Going Steady: Exactly What It Says on the Tin, with Kelly probably being the worst offender. For some reason EWISOTT isn't appearing on the page in question. It's an irrelevant mention though, and the NGS example is a ZCE
  77. NetworkDecay. In Universe Examples: The Andrew W.K. song "Hearing What I Said", which was used as a promotion for CN Real, pretty much sums up Cartoon Network’s attempts at live action. Not surprisingly, it wasn’t received very well.
  78. UsefulNotes.Atheism: Indeed, there are several atheist organizations for military members. One? Foxhole Atheists. More of an inside joke than EWISOTT
  79. HilariousInHindsight.Another Metroid 2 Remake: * The title Another Metroid 2 Remake is a Permanent Placeholder stemming from the time when it was just one of many fan projects to remake Metroid 2. This became an Artifact Title when all those other fan projects died out, leaving this as the only Metroid 2 remake. One year later, when Nintendo officially remade Metroid 2 as Samus Returns, AM2R's title once again becomes relevant: distinguishing itself from Samus Returns as literally another Metroid 2 remake.
Milton Guasti: Looks like the ANOTHER part of #am2r still makes sense now. Inside joke, and not really self-descriptive
  80. WesternAnimation.King: Under is located under Russell's bed. Likewise, many the other locations are named simply after their location relative to Under, like Near Under, Under Under, Ahead-of-Under, and Before-Under. Given that Under is a Cloud Cuckooland, it's likely the inhabitants of Under just saw it as common sense to give them their unimaginative names. Giver of Lame Names
  81. Characters.Warrior Nun: Her name is Shotgun Mary. She wields a pair of shotguns. Meaningful Name
  82. VideoGame.Star Craft II: Hive Queen: The Queen, which is supposed to stay in base to force hatcheries to spawn additional Larvae, while also helping to maintain, strengthen, and defend, though they also make excellent support units. Not indicative enough outside of this context
  83. NightmareFuel.Arthur: The episode "Locked in the Library!" has plenty of disturbing imagery from Arthur's fear when he and Francine are, well... locked in the library. Arthur sees many scary faces and the grandfather clock turning into a ferocious monster before he reassures himself that he's just imagining it.Not to mention that Arthur and Francine realize that unless someone knows where they are, no one will open the library until Monday. Arthur's stomach growls as he realizes they don't have anything to eat. He gets so hungry that he eats a magazine page of a roast turkey. Becomes Nightmare Retardant when Francine finds the library's staff room and snacks for them to eat, but still! Miss Turner is apologetic and horrified for a reason. A similar scene is when Arthur looks in the garage in "Arthur's New Puppy." The various sights he sees in the dark include a vacuum cleaner with menacing eyes. Seems correct
  84. Funny.Sentinels Of The Multiverse: The fact that Mecha Stalin exists. He is exactly what he sounds like, a cyborg Stalin and essentially the Soviet counterpart to Mecha Hitler from Wolfenstein 3-D. The idea is so ridiculous that when his existence was revealed some people thought it was a joke. In the RPG, there's two of them. Better fits Fighting Clown; naming gimmicks are a very common theme for that trope
  85. VideoGame.Disco Elysium: Collection Sidequest: Collect all the figurines you can so you can "win her back". Win who back? It's not Dolores Dei, and it wouldn't matter if it was. There are only two figurines in the game, and they won't win her back. She doesn't want them. She doesn't want you. It's only a dream, anyway. You do get an achievement ("The Figurines Won't Win Her Back") out of it, though. Labeled AP/object
  86. Characters.Borderlands Creatures: Breath Weapon: The Barf Skag. It barfs, which blocks your screen.
    • Badass Skags, which are imbued with their respective elements, will often stop to unleash a torrent of elemental breath and/or vomit on their enemies. Fire Skags breath out fire, Slag Skags puke up tons of slag, etc. Fits better under Identically Powered Team
  87. Funny.Amphibia Season 1: Anne literally has a playlist on her phone called "Hard Work Montage Playlist". Guess what it's played to? Feels like more of an Invoked Trope than anything
  88. Wrestling.John Tenta: Of, well, an earthquake. For a time, his ring gear featured a design that resembled a Richter scale's wavelength. Meaningful Name
  89. NightmareFuel. Please Dont Touch Anything: The fourth ending (going by the lights on the panel), which is known as the Satanic ending. An unsettling Nightmare Face (pictured here) comes and takes over the screen. Especially scary in the 3D version, where the face is accompanied by blood covering the room and demonic voices all over. All of the endings are named like this; seems like a MacGuffin Title pattern (since the heroes have to destroy it)
  90. WMG.Pony POV Series:
Each Element of Chaos represents one of the Draconequi.
    :
  91. YMMV.Mega Man Battle Network: Game-Breaker:
    • The Lark series of viruses - those that drop the Wide Shot chips - fire shots that cover a wide area in battle. Mercifully, they never attack when they're in the middle row, else their attack is unavoidable. Not so mercifully, the wide coverage of these attacks make them notorious for breaking in-battle Mystery Data, sometimes within the very first second of the fight. Labeled AP/object
  92. WMG.Pico: : As for non-official characters...
    • Otis could be yet another "safe space" or yet another real person outside of this (Pico's cousin, pretty much). Otis, however, would reflect Pico's more "innocent" side if we go with the safe space option, but even he's affected by repressed memories, if the Neo Goth Punks are anything to go by. Piconjo is what Pico fears he'll become if he gives into what he thinks is bad; he conjured an evil-looking version of himself so that he thinks he won't end up that way in the future. Convict would represent the fear of the world being against Pico, hence his shapeshifting abilities. Nene being killed off in Pico vs Convict represents the world forcing Pico to get rid of one of his delusions, even one that makes him feel better about himself. Irrelevant pothole; referring to the game Pico's Cousin 2 and its namesake but talking about the latter more explicitly
  93. Characters.MCU Kang: The Conqueror: Indeed; before his first appearance, Kang has conquered countless worlds, and in Quantumania, despite being marooned there by his own variants, he launched a campaign in the Quantum Realm so effective that he's known and feared far and wide, with no one willing to so much as utter his name. His plan in the film is to escape the Quantum Realm so that he can renew his multiversal campaign of conquest and avenge himself upon those who trapped him there to begin with. Meaningful Name. There's another pothole to the trope in the context of "He Who Remains", which seems like a more explicit case of MN since it matters more in context
  94. Webcomic.Last Place Comics: * Fate Worse than Death: "Artifacting Man", who is artifacted, has been reposted and compressed multiple times. This is treated by the other characters as a sort of disease. What Did You Expect When You Named It ____?
  95. Anime.Yu Gi Oh: A lot of the cards, like "Red-Eyes Black Dragon," "Man-Eating Treasure Chest," and "Dark Magician," just to name a few.
  96. LetsPlay.Freelance Astronauts: Ten seconds into their New Super Mario Bros. Wii playthrough, pipes! christens the game Super Asshole Bros. Wii. 4-ish hours of backstabbing, juvenile humour, and screaming nonsensical death threats promptly follow. Not that self-descriptive; seems like Justified Title
  97. ManBehindTheMan.Live Action TV: Star Trek: Enterprise: In Series 3, the Xindi race's attack on Earth made them the arc villains - however, as the ship searched for them in their home space, it happened across mysterious giant spheres warping reality, and then their architects, the extradimensional Sphere Builders. In the end it turned out the Xindi had been manipulated by the Sphere Builders into attacking Earth as part of a Batman Gambit to prevent them joining with humans against the Sphere Builders in the future, and the Sphere Builders were the real villains. Labeled AP/object
  98. CommonlyMisusedWords.Less Pedantic: A stock is the part of a rifle, shotgun, SMG, or occasionally pistol that is braced against the shoulder; a grip is the part that is actually, well, gripped—it's specifically the part of the gun that is held by the hand that pulls the trigger, and includes the trigger itself (though sometimes also used as a shortened form of "foregrip", the part of a long gun that is held by the off-hand to steady the weapon). The stock and grip are together part of the receiver, the framework that holds the whole thing together (often called a frame on handguns). Irrelevant pothole; technically two or three of the pistol parts are self-descriptive (receiver and trigger)
  99. Literature.Foundation Series: Just the First Citizen: The title of the Second Foundation's leader is the First Speaker, which is a literal job-description: they're the one allowed to speak first at meetings. Better fits Not Hyperbole
In fact, the only official prerogative of the First Speaker was that which was explicit in his title—he always spoke first. (Foundation's Edge)
  100. Series.Between The Lions: Cliffhanger: Parodied, lampshaded, played straight and taken literally all at the same time. "Cliff Hanger" features a man named Cliff Hanger hanging from a cliff. Each episode he tries - and fails - to escape his dangerous perch, and they always begin and end with him clutching a particularly loose branch and shouting, "Can't...hold...on...much...LONGEEEEER!" Seems to be Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs
  101. Characters.Alexs Mobs: Mook Lieutenant: The silverbacks are gorillas that are twice as big and strong. Each troop has one who serves the role of the leader of the troop. They are easy to distinguish because of their big heads, and silver backs. Meaningful Name
  102. Film.Psych Out: The Strawberry Alarm Clock song that plays over some scenes is officially called "The Pretty Song from Psych-Out." Expository Theme Tune; the lyrics also reflect this
  103. Funny. The Angry Video Game Nerd Season Three: When he figures out that you are supposed to beat the entire level without dying once.
AVGN: You gotta be fucking kidding me! That's ridiculous! Like, WHAT!?! Like, you have to travel all around and go to five different buildings, four to get the clues and then the last one to arrest "Numbers." ALL WITHOUT DYING ONCE!!! THAT'S WHORESHIT!!! And I didn't say "horse shit" I said "whore shit" like a whore taking a shit! You know, remember when you were a little kid, it was fucking Friday, you did all your homework and you rented a game from the local video store. And this was it. This was your whole weekend, that one game, you didn't have anything else to do! So you had no choice but to keep playing that first part of the game over and over and over again! And it's like, "YOU KNOW WHAT" it's like I wanna see the rest of the game! YOU CAN'T JUST LET THE GAME FUCKING WIN LIKE THAT! So, THAT'S why you don't give up. *Drinks beer.* Not Hyperbole
  104. Characters.Stellaris Non Empire: Healing Factor: Crystalline Entities are the main source of the Regenerative Hull Tissue tech, which does Exactly What It Says on the Tin both for them and any ship you install it on after your scientists reverse-engineered it. Labeled AP/object
  105. FalloutNewVegas.Tropes C To D: Duct Tape for Everything Duct Tape is a component for the Weapon Repair kit, which can repair any weapon, from a lead pipe to an Alien Blaster. Labeled AP/object
  106. Series.Eureka: Super-Intelligence: Carter accidentally ingests some in "Smarter Carter." Generalization; there's a much bigger plot
  107. Funny.Saturday Night Live Season 47: John Mulaney/LCD Soundsystem:
    • Two words: Monkey Judge. Playing a judge who's also a monkey, John Mulaney's serious, formal voice gets put to great use when delivering absurd lines, such as calling the plaintiff's lawyer "the shape in the blue with the grey", or "You are baby. Judge love baby. Bring judge baby. Judge love you. Judge favour defence". Literal Metaphor
  108. Music.Steve Hackett: [Studio Discography]:
  109. Funny. The Forty Year Old Virgin: "Andy, for the last time, I don't want your giant box of pornography!"
  110. BigBadEnsemble.Fan Works: The Wolverine and the X-Men (2009) fanfic "Wolverine and the X-Men: Season 2" picks up where the original series left off, with Apocalypse as the upcoming and overriding threat and Mister Sinister as the Dragon-in-Chief and The Heavy since his master has not appeared yet. However, they're far from the only threat, since "Danger Ratings" adds The Human High Council, led by Cameron Hodge and General William Kincaid, who are acting in response to Magneto's actions at the end of the original series and will go on to oppose Sinister according to Word of God. The series also has Mojo as an Arc Villain for "Danger Ratings", with Omega Red out for revenge against Weapon X for some reason and Weapon X itself hanging around in the background. Irrelevant pothole
  111. Music.PJ Harvey: "Seagulls" within Uh Huh Her. Not self-descrptive, better fits Justified Title
  112. Characters.Kono Suba Supporting Characters: Attack Reflector: Can cast the Reflect spell, which reflects incoming attack spells back towards their source. Labeled AP/object
  113. Literature.Die Kinder Aus Nr 67: Several titles. ZCE
  114. Characters.Super Mario Bros: They take trucks and kidnap their drivers as well for a profit, hence the name Trucknappers. Names to Run Away from Really Fast
  115. YMMV.Hearthstone Heroes Of Warcraft: Fan Nickname:
    • You'll be hardpressed to find someone who refers to Flamewreathed Faceless by name, instead of "the 4 mana 7/7". Not self-descriptive
  116. Music.Lostprophets: "It's Not the End of the World, But I Can See It from Here" is a very upbeat song about, well, the end of the world. Not self-descriptive; it says it isn't the end
  117. Characters.Power Rangers Megaforce: Meaningful Name: [Bluefur] has blue fur. Irrelevant, since it's covered by NM already
  118. TabletopGame.Eberron: Everice (the perpetually frozen north), Flamekeep (where the Silver Flame is kept), Thronehold (the original seat of the Galifar throne), the Demon Wastes (the last wastes from the Age of Demons)... None of these are really that self-descriptive, and it'd fall under "Labeled AP/object" misuse anyway
  119. ShowWithinAShow.Theatre: The Play That Goes Wrong is about an amateur dramatic company attempting to stage a play The Murder at Haversham Manor which goes more and more spectacularly wrong as the production goes on. Seems correct
  120. Fanfic. The Great Slave King: Meaningful Name: Lasher, who among other things, administers lashes to slaves. Names to Run Away from Really Fast
  121. Literature.Being Able To Edit Skills In Another World I Gained OP Waifus: New Life in Another World Bonus: Skill Structure allows Nagi to do exactly that. Irrelevant pothole
  122. Anime. My Neighbor Totoro: Animal-Vehicle Hybrid: The Catbus, which is Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Irrelevant pothole; already covered by the trope being listed
  123. WebVideo.Modern Rogue: Running Gag: Several:
    • "Reset the Injury Counter" due to the sheer amount of dangerous shit they try that comes back to bite them, for instance as seen above. Now has an official compilation!
    • Related to the above, deliberately forgoing or even removing safety equipment (typically cut-proof gloves) because they "need the dexterity".
    • TMZCobra, an unholy and nefarious fusion of TMZ and Cobra that seeks to spy on, usurp, and generally bother President Kardashian. Such videos tend to follow the theme of Jason acting as an agent of TMZCobra, setting up spy devices or other such challenges (while wearing ridiculous high-wasted pants) and Secret Service "Agent" Brushwood seeking to thwart whatever schemes menace the Madame President this time.
    • Anytime the boys make something that could be considered an explosive device, they awkwardly dance around the word "bomb".
    • Brian's less-than-intimidating war cry of "Go away bad guys". Pothole to TMZ Cobra seems irrelevant; the entry admits it's an "unholy fusion" and that wouldn't be the first thing to come to mind
  124. PoweredByAForsakenChild.Tabletop Games: The Sourcebook detailing the Seers of the Throne includes their special servitors. The Myrmidons are fairly standard inborn Super Soldiers (although they are cursed to have to follow any command given to them in a certain language) and the Hive-Souled are Exactly What It Says on the Tin. The Grigori (a kind of ghost spy that can sense and follow the connections between people and things) and the Hollow Ones (people who can have their personalities rewritten) on the other hand are created by wrapping a person in a shroud which tears out their mind and reworks it, and exposing someone to an Eldritch Abomination which eats the part of their soul which lets them have any semblance of individuality (and the personalities they can be given are inevitably temporary), respectively. Neither process can be reversed. Labeled AP/object
  125. Literature.Assassins Creed Last Descendants: The series is about the last living descendants of Assassins and Templars in the modern-day. Generalization; if it was Last Descendants: Owen Clears His Dad's Name it'd probably count though
  126. Funny.Zero Punctuation 4: The Tropic of Fuckabout.
Yahtzee: In the world of difficult games, there exists a hypothetical line, which I like to call the Tropic of Fuckabout. It is defined as the point where high difficulty stops being a stimulating challenge and becomes merely fucking me about. Better fits Literal Metaphor, especially since this is an in-universe title
  127. AccidentalInnuendo.Anime And Manga: [Dirty Pair]'s title could give newcomers the impression that it has something to do with women's underwear. Or that it might have underlying implications about Kei and Yuri themselves, because they're a pair of scantily clad college-aged girls. For the record, the title was intended to evoke films like Dirty Harry and The Dirty Dozen. Not that self-descriptive
  128. TropersDoIt.Before Anyone Else: Literalists do it with their genitals. Shaped Like Itself
  129. Film.Doomsday: Most of characters are not named in story. Meanwhile, the credits tend to give extras really colorful, but very easy to identify, names. Example admits it fits better under Meaningful Name, due to how they're separated
  130. WebVideo.Derrick Comedy: He Really Gave It To Me, which begins by parodying nicknames employees give their bosses. Each time Kevin opens the door, he hears the sound of the nickname given to the boss. It starts with "The Boss" and "Grizzly Bear" and goes downhill quickly. Notable are police sirens, the theme from Jurassic Park, James Brown being put to sleep, a father explaining sex to his son with a poor choice of props, and three Elvis impersonators ordering at a restaurant where the kitchen is out of a lot of stuff. Parody of The Trope without a Title
  131. YMMV.Enigmata: Game-Breaker: The Time Stop. This makes Time Stands Still and allows you to wail on the boss. Combine with the Green Betastasize to reduce the energy cost and even beat bosses like Clade with ease.
  132. Characters.TNO Komi Communist: An in-universe example when Chelomei is building support to become Vice Premier by currying favor from Alexander Sheremetyev. In their meeting, Chelomei presents a dossier of his economic plan called "Visionary Social Commitments". As Chelomei lampshades, the plan does what it's title implies, namely in shifting the country's industrial burden to the citizens so as to relieve the People's Commissariat of Industry from closely managing so much territory. Isn't really that self-descriptive; hints at a larger plan, but not how it unfolds
  133. WebAnimation.Annoying Villagers: It's a show about annoying villagers. Nowadays however, it is somewhat more than that. Series is about Non-Player Character villagers specifically; also a partial-context example
  134. Literature.Chronicles Of Blood And Stone: Newcomb has a tendency to give things very blunt names that describe exactly what they are - Tristan and Shailiha are "the Chosen One," the Magical Society Wigg belongs to is "the Directorate of Wizards," the sorceresses' mooks are "the Minions", the sorceresses themselves are called "The Coven of Sorceresses" and so on. Some of these later get more "fantasy-ish" names; others are left as they are. Nominal Importance
  135. Sandbox.Stress Relieving Gameplay: [FlatOut 2, has] Simcade, which provides a number of highly satisfying ways to run into other cars. Available modes are Race (heavily-themed courses with a large amount of scenery to demolish at very high speed), Event (smaller track, usually designed for extra speed or with a calculated chance for collisions), Demolition Derby (Exactly What It Says on the Tin), or Stunt (use a jetcar to get up to speed and then launch the driver through the windshield for things like High Jump, Darts, etc). When in a suitable mood for completely wanton devastation, the Wreaking Havok that this game provides is highly enjoyable.Labeled AP/object
  136. ThemeMusicPowerUp.Anime And Manga: A Certain Magical Index has "Jellyfish" by Mami Kawada. This plays when Index is alone and Sherry Cromwell's Golem attacks her. Index then goes on to show that even in her normal mode she is able to call upon the power of the 103,000 grimores she has memorized and easily repels the Golem's attacks until Touma comes along and cancels the whole summoning.
  137. YMMV.Prometheus: Fan Nickname:
    • "Cuddles/Squidbaby/Shaw Jr." for the creature that Shaw extracts from her abdomen.
    • "Assflower/Proto-burster/Penis Snake" for the Hammerpede, the snakelike creature that attacks Milburn.
    • "Cloaky" for the first Engineer seen.
    • "Basketbike", for the sport David invented.
    • "Black goo", for, well, the black goo. Not self-descriptive; there's actual lore behind it
  138. Literature.George And Azazel: Menander from "Saving Humanity" wants to save humanity after years of causing damage as The Jinx, so Azazel remakes him into a Jinx for computers only, so that one day he can help avert an A.I. Is a Crapshoot scenario. Example admits that the story is a bit more narrow than this
  139. Film.Annihilation 2018: Dangerously Garish Environment: Area X is full of brightly-colored plants that have The Shimmer (which...shimmers, and which can infest humans if they encounter them, driving them to madness and/or death, including turning them into some of the brightly-colored plants.) Labeled AP/object
  140. VideoGame.I Wanna Be The Fangame: Breaking the Fourth Wall: One of the most brilliant examples of this comes into play in Trial 4 in the Hall of Trials. There's only one interesting feature in the room: the Lag Spike. It's a spike with Lag written on it that shakes so so so rapidly, the framerate can't keep up and it SLOWS THE GAME DOWN. That's right: it literally lags your game as much as possible to make it difficult. Labeled AP/object
  141. Series.Shameless US: Destination Defenestration: "The Defenestration of Frank" is Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Frank's homeless shelter finds his stash of money and they promptly throw him out the window. Doesn't actually describe the whole plot (Fiona's involvement, the laundromat, etc)
  142. GiantSpider.Live Action Films: Big Ass Spider!: Rather unsurprisingly, one of these is the villain. Seems correct
  143. Series.Dog With A Blog: The main character is a canine who maintains a blog about his day to day life. Not much to say beyond that. Most episode titles. "Tyler Gets a Girlfriend", "Stan Stops Talking", "Avery's First Crush", among others. Seems correct
  144. ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice.Video Games: Demon's Souls has an example where a boss named Penetrator used his sword to impale the Fat Official that you have been chasing throughout the entire level. And he can do it to you too with the same results. You can also do this to the enemies too. Dark Souls, Dragonslayer Onstein's most dangerous attack does this to the player while simultaneously shocking them with lightning. Abysswalker Artorias is seen doing this to a monster in one of the trailers for the Updated Re-release. In Dark Souls II, a backstab with a spear or lance brutally impales the victim right through their torso and lifts them up before dropping them. Names to Run Away from Really Fast
  145. VideoGame.Shin Megami Tensei Liberation Dx 2: Status-Buff Dispel: The series standard Dekaja and Dekunda. The former dispels all -kaja buffs on the enemies and the latter dispels all -nda buffs on the allies. Discord removes all Charge, Concentrate, and Might buffs from the enemies. Tetra Break, Makara Break, Lydia Break, and Barrier Break. Exactly What It Says on the Tin, they dispel Tetrakarn, Makarakarn, Lydia, and Barrier. Silent Prayer is the ultimate dispel skill, as it removes any and all kinds of Status Buffs and Status Effects from allies and enemies alike. Only things it doesn't dispel are -kaja buffs and -nda debuffs. Labeled object/AP
  146. StealthPun.Western Animation: In "Candace Gets Busted", the Go-Away-Inator zaps all of Candace's uninvited party guests to an undesirable location — Doofenshmirtz's pants. And they're all still dancing. In other words, he had a party in his pants. Labeled AP/object + it doesn't mention where they go anyway
  147. FirstContact.Literature: Literarure/Fiasco by Stanisław Lem is about an expedition to contact an alien civilisation - which proves way too alien, not to mention completely uninterested. As to how it ends - the hint is in the title. Very heavy generalization; what does "fiasco" really mean for the characters?
  148. Characters.Fighting Fantasy Antagonists Old World: Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": The Archmage of Mampang is... an archmage who lives in Mampang. Pretty much already covered by ECHB
  149. AntiFrustrationFeatures.Platformer: Sonic Erazor has the Hard Part Skipper, a device that's placed before especially difficult parts that will skip them, though you lose all your rings and power-ups in the process. Labeled object/AP
  150. OlderThanTheyThink.Other Media: The wearing of masks in wrestling has been popularized by the lucha libre of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. But the first masked wrestler was not Mexican or even Hispanic, but French - and he started the trend during the late nineteenth century! He obviously didn't think what he was doing was going to be a big deal, because he billed himself as "The Masked Wrestler." Shaped Like Itself; people didn't know what to expect from him other than the fact he'd be masked
  151. Administrivia.Trope Idea Salvage Yard: Someone that is...kidnapped by a relative, which would have different motives and repercussions as if its done by a stranger. Source. Admits it's more narrow than the name implies
  152. Film. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button: Running Gag: "Did I ever tell you that I was struck by lightning seven times?" followed by sepia footage of the man being struck by lightning on the particular occasion he just described. We only get to see five, though. Irrelevant pothole
  153. YMMV.Coronation Street: Coronation St.: The Mystery of the Missing Hotpot Recipe is a Hidden Object Game for the PC that revolves around finding the missing hotpot recipe. Despite being released in 2011, the presentation is rather lacking with just still images, stale dialogue, sound effects that are few and far between, and an absent soundtrack. Gameplay consists of finding the right objects, but the scale of those objects is all over the place with some of the objects being much smaller than you'd expect. The hint button doesn't so much as tell you where to look as it just gives you the solution. Consequences are also minimal because repeatedly clicking the wrong object simply swirls the cursor around the screen for a brief period of time. Generalization, as the game is actually more narrow than that—the hotpot recipe was torn up and had been hidden from a rival pub
  154. TabletopGame.GURPS: There are multiple ways of giving your character one, most built around the disadvantage Berserk. Labeled object/AP
  155. Characters.Borderlands Hodunk And Zaford Clans: Her tip jar has a sign above it that reads "Insert your tip", and she reprogrammed a Hyperion loader to speak in little but sexual innuendos. And named it Innuendobot 5000. Just Advanced Tech 2000
  156. Website.Fantasy Powers League: Card-Carrying Villain: Lord Canelaser, Eater of Widows. Names to Run Away from Really Fast
