The Shrouds

    As a Whole
The Shrouds is the unofficial party name and Battle Harem of Rein Shroud, first formed after he was kicked out of the Hero's Party and forms a contract with Kanade.
  • Badass Crew: In addition to an absurdly powerful Beast Tamer, we have a harem of women in different varieties: animals, demons, fairies, and ghosts; all of whom are just as capable in battle as they are beautiful.
  • Balanced Harem: Rein's harem continues to grow and he does a very good job in giving them all equal love and respect, never favoring one over another. It helps that everyone all loves each other as family.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: All of them willingly choose to join Rein after he either saved them or showed them compassion, with them insisting on it.
  • Hero's Slave Harem: Subverted, though the explanation is omitted from the anime adaptation. While the women of Rein's battle harem are all in a tamer contract, they are all free to leave with mutual consent if they desire, and they don't have to obey his orders. In fact, Rein has no way of compelling them to do anything. He asks nicely and they do it willingly.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: All the women in Rein's harem fall in love with him for being the heroic kind-hearted man he's always been. Even with the beast tamer contract they all willingly submit to it solely because they want to be with Rein out of love.
  • Undying Loyalty: A major factor in the success of Rein's party is the loyalty they share, there's practically nothing Rein won't do for his friends and they reciprocate in kind. Contrast this with Arios' party who seem to tolerate each other for their uses rather than any real sense of camaraderie.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Attempting to harm, or even insult, Rein in the presence of his lady-friends (particularly Kanade and Tania) is all but guaranteed to land the culprit in the nearest infirmary.

No, Arios. I want nothing to do with you, and won't come back to your party, even if it is to defeat the Demon Lord.

Rein spent six months doing all the scouting, cooking, and logistics support for the Hero's Party, until one day, he is just summarily fired for no explicable reason, with the rest of the party glaring at him in contempt. Far from home with no options, he tries his hand at the adventurer's guild, but nobody will party with him, as his Beast Tamer profession is well-known to be rather lacking in the combat department. On a herb-gathering quest, he bumps into the starving Kanade and comes to her rescue, distracting the monster chasing her long enough for her to recover and defeat it, but she collapses immediately afterward. Because he rescued her without ulterior motives, she strongly insists that he tame her, until he caves, and she winds up tickled pink.

  • Action Survivor: Rein survived the destruction of his home village because he was out in the woods practicing his taming magic and came back to find monsters swarming the place. He hid until they were gone and then found himself the sole survivor.
  • All-Loving Hero: He rarely holds a grudge and will rescue pretty much anybody in trouble.
  • Always Save the Girl: The primary reason he develops a powerful Battle Harem is that he came to the rescue of every one of them in some way, without asking anything in return. Even Tania, the dragon, is rescued, because he kept the fact that she's the dragon challenging people on the bridge secret, choosing to have her in his party over the reward for turning her in.
  • Beautiful Dreamer: Kaede and Tania love watching his face while he sleeps, to the point that they actively fight over the side of the bed closest to him in Episode 3.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's a total people pleaser until he has reason not to be, but when that line is crossed, he won't be very merciful to the target(s) of his ire. Starting with Kanade and Tania, he also has the means to do something about it too.
  • Celibate Hero: Starting with Kanade, he's well aware the women of his Battle Harem are alluring, and they're aware he's aware, but they all trust him because he knows how to keep it in his pants and won't do anything untoward.
  • Chick Magnet: Let's just say it's probably easier to count the number of women who aren't attracted to him romantically and leave it at that.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Rein has such a strong sense of justice that he will put himself on the line to help the helpless and rescue the oppressed, even knowing it won't be in his own interest to do so, might be suicidal, and even if he doesn't actually want to do it. Even taking on a one-time quest for the same Hero's Party that unjustly fired him and was planning to do it again once he'd completed his task for them. Rein clearly doesn't want anything to do with them, but Arios's party is trying to stop a threat to the entire world, so Rein agrees. Within the Lost Forest itself, Rein offers to help Sora even though she's already given them what they came for and they have no other reason to remain. Tania tends to chide Rein as being "too good of a person" because of this, while Kanade realizes it's due to Rein's village being destroyed in his childhood. He doesn't want to see someone else suffer that same kind of tragedy.
  • Combat Pragmatist: While he has no problem going head-to-head with his enemies when he can, in situations where the stakes are high, he has no qualms fighting dirty, such as using moths with paralyzing scales to cripple guards at a warehouse holding hostages, or sending swarms of poisonous insects at powerful demon generals.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: He learns that super strength is a perk given by Kanade's taming contract when a thug attempts to make him give her up through an arm-wrestle. Rain pulps the guy's hand and wrecks the table they were using.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: When the Hero's Party come up to him with empty platitudes to try and rope him into their party once more to gather a key item they need in their quest against the Demon Lord, fully planning to fire him a second time once they've got it, Kanade and Tania demand an apology for firing Rein the first time. When they not only refuse but spew insults against Rein's Battle Harem, Rein punches Arios in the face and the rest of the party winds up finding out the hard way how inferior they are to Rein's new party. After handily defeating Arios, Rein notes that while he's not the type to go looking for revenge, defeating Arios felt good.
  • Friend to All Children: Right after he was fired from the hero's party, he's seen demonstrating his ability to form temporary beast contracts with a group of local kids at their request.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Whenever possible, he doesn't just sit back and passively wait for trouble to come to him. He will preemptively target and eliminate any possible evil-doer the first chance he gets. Case in point, in Episode 2, he rescues a merchant from some bandits and the merchant points out that the bandit gang is likely to come for vengeance. In response, he tracks down their headquarters and completely crushes the gang. Then when Edgar Fromware comes at him in town, corrupt knights in tow, he doesn't just fight off the knights and rescue the hostages, he systematically takes Edgar's power structure apart and goes after him, raiding his dungeons to free his victims and gain as many allies as possible.
  • Harem-Powered: Which Kanade points out. The more members of the "ultimate species" he makes a Tamer contract with, the stronger he gets. Naturally, all the contracts he makes happen to be with women who are all very physically attractive.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: He keeps saying that he's a normal beast tamer.
  • Heroic Lineage: He is also a descendant of the Hero, his bloodline is from the branch family.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: The reason he put up with so much abuse from Arios and the Hero Party for so long; after the death of his family and the destruction of his home town, he was alone for a long time struggling to survive. He hoped that by being useful, the heroes would eventually accept him as one of their own, only for them to cruelly reject and discard him when they thought he wasn't useful to them. However, he's able to form genuine bonds of friendship and love with his Battle Harem, and they become the True Companions he always wanted.
  • I Thought Everyone Could Do That:
    • Rein is oblivious to just how talented a Beast Tamer he is, as he can contract with both the ultimate species and multiple normal animals when normally a Beast Tamer is limited to only a single normal animal. This is due to having spent his childhood in a village full of Beast Tamers like himself before it was destroyed, and not coming into contact with "normal" Beast Tamers since. It's not until Kanade points out just how impressive he is that Rein starts to realize it himself and begins to experiment with things he would not have tried before, such as trying to "overwrite" another Beast Tamer's contract to take control of a Behemoth.
    • This goes to his previous team as well. After they kicked him out, thinking of him as dead weight, they were surprised to find out how weak Beast Tamers were compared to him. When they tried to get the other Beast Tamers to do even a fraction of what Rein used to do, the Beast Tamers think they are nuts for expecting that much.
  • Master Poisoner: A common tactic Rein uses is the contracting of poisonous creatures and using them to paralyze opponents. He has a thorough knowledge of which animals can do what, as he uses different poisonous beasts each time he uses this trick. Against Tania he used poisonous ravens he detected in the area, against the Jet-Black Fangs and Arios he used bees, and when rounding up corrupt guardsmen he incapacitated them by trapping them in an enclosed area into which he sent butterflies with paralyzing poison scales. In the last case, Rein and company can watch from the area's upper floors because he's aware of the scales being heavier than air.
  • Nice Guy: You'd be hard pressed to find anyone more benevolent than Rein.
  • No-Sell: A benefit to his contract with Runa is immunity to Status Effects like Instant Death.
  • Pest Controller: He can use provisional contracts to control insects and calls it a sub-branch of taming. He is unaware that this is an extremely rare tamer ability.
  • Rage Breaking Point: After enduring the Hero Party's insulting remarks as the latter condescendingly asks for his assistance once again, Rein finally has enough when Arios calls Kanade and Tania Rein's "trophies" and inferior beings, prompting the Beast Tamer to deck the designated Hero in the face.
  • Refused by the Call: He is summarily fired from the Hero's Party at the start of the story and called "useless" because they didn't appreciate the value of logistics, thinking only obvious battle utility is important.
  • Seven Heavenly Virtues:
    • Charity: He comes to Kanade's rescue and buys her a meal when he didn't have enough cash to buy food for himself. She insists on having him Tame her as a result.
    • Chastity: Kanade insists on sharing a bedroom with him because she can tell he's not the kind of guy who will try something, and she's right.
    • Diligence: He works hard and with integrity until the job is done, even if it hurts him in the process.
    • Honesty: He can't tell a lie to save his life, literally.
    • Humility: He is not one to brag or boast. He gives credit where it's due and often undervalues himself. He is genuinely oblivious to how far above normal Beast Tamers he is. He also turns down the offer the become the next Hero after Arios' betrayal.
    • Kindness: He's a total sweetheart until he has reason not to be, to the point that Tania scolds him for his Chronic Hero Syndrome by calling him "too good of a person"
    • Temperance: He doesn't care about fame or fortune. As long as he and his party have their basic needs met, he's content.
  • Sole Survivor: Everyone from his home village is dead aside from himself due to a demon attack. Rein's Chronic Hero Syndrome stems from not wanting to ever see anyone else go through what he did.
  • Super-Empowering: He can make his tamed party members even more impressive with limited-time power boosts.
  • Support Party Member: What he used to be in the Hero's Party, providing all the logistics and key intel with his contracted animals. Since this isn't combat flashy, the party looked at him as "dead weight" and fired him with contempt. Even though their standard of living plummeted and they realized that combat might isn't everything, most of them still refuse to believe it was their fault.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: He always opts to incapacitate humans and sentient opponents by knocking them out or using venoms to paralyze them, no matter if they are enemy soldiers or bandits, he even will try to save them from danger if he can.
  • The Unchosen One: After finishing Arios's request at the Lost Forest, the girls ask Rein to explain an earlier statement that Arios was the only one who could defeat the Demon Lord. Rein explains that Arios is descended from a hero who was given the power "Limit Breaker" by the gods. This allowed the Hero, and by extension Arios, to continue to get stronger and stronger, unhindered by the "Growth Limit" that all other mortal beings are subject to, and this is needed to match the Demon Lord. Upon hearing this, Sora suggests the possibility that Rein also has no Growth Limit, as his Power Copying makes him stronger with every contract he forms. This prompts Kanade to ask if this means Rein would be able to defeat the Demon Lord instead of the divinely chosen Hero. Rein is not against the idea, but is still hesitant about it and asks to be able to give it some thought. Subverted since he also has the blood of the Hero, which he came from the branch family.
  • Unique Protagonist Asset:
    • Beast Tamers are normally only able to control one single, normal animal at a time. Rein, however, is not only able to tame multiple animals at once, he can form contracts with the ultimate species, humanoid races with incredible power. Doing so gives Rein their powers via Power Copying, such as Cat Girl Kanade's physical power and dragon girl Tania's magical power. It's implied that all Beast Tamers in Rein's hometown were just as capable, but his village was destroyed when Rein was twelve years old, leaving him the sole survivor. The only beasts he doesn't attempt to tame are full-on monsters like King Lizards, Killer Tigers, Behemoths, or goblins; instead opting to steal from or kill them like other adventurers due to their hate against all other life those creatures exude which makes taming them next to impossible even with his skills without getting killed in the process. When he overrides the control a tamer has over a Behemoth, Rein immediately points out that the confused and angry monster would attack the trainer due to all the built-up hate it had within and puts it out of its misery.
    • Later in the story, it is suggested by one of the Fairy twins that Rein may not have any upper limit to his potential growth. All mortals in the setting are subject to such a limit, a point at which they can become no stronger no matter what they do. The only known exception to this is the hero Arios, as he's descended from a prior hero who was given the "Limit Breaker" ability by the gods. It is for this reason Arios is considered the only one potentially capable of fighting the Demon Lord. Sora theorizes that Rein's Power Copying may work in much the same way: Offering a way for him to become continually stronger with every contract he forms. The reason is revealed to be because Rein is also a descendent of the original Hero, his home village having been founded by a branch family of the Hero bloodline.

Of course I'm sleeping in same bedroom as you! If you were the kind of guy to try something, I never would have asked you to tame me!

Encountered by Rein in a swamp being chased by a Killer Tiger, he rescues her by distracting the monster long enough for her to kill the beast, but she collapses afterward. He declines any reward and feeds her, despite not having enough money to buy food for himself. She thanks him by insisting he tames her, once she realizes he's a Beast Tamer. They have traveled together ever since.

  • Big Eater: She eats in one sitting what a human would eat in a week before she's satisfied. Justified by the fact that her Super-Strength takes a lot of calories. In fact, when Rein and Kanade meet, the only reason she's in danger in the first place is because she's weak from hunger. Once she's fed, she's unstoppable.
  • Cat Girl: She has cat's ears on her head and a cat's tail on her back. She even toys with some of her opponents like a cat playing with its prey.
  • Cute Bruiser: Looks like a pretty young cat girl, and is strong enough to kill a monster tiger with an axe kick.
  • Cute Little Fang: As a cat spirit, she has fangs that make her even more adorable.
  • Cuteness Proximity:
    • When Rein finds several horned bunnies, she hugs a lot of them while claiming she's in paradise.
    • Her first reaction upon meeting Nina is going gaga over how cute she is.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: She can smell an ulterior motive a mile away. When she's rescued by Rein, who has none, she insists he tame her despite not having even known him a day. She trusts him enough to sleep in the same room and even says she'd be fine sleeping in the same bed, noting that the very fact Rein is worried about it is proof he's trustworthy.
  • Genki Girl: She hardly drops her cheerful, energetic and optimistic demeanor.
  • Girly Bruiser: Kanade's outfit of choice is a dress with ruffled sleeves and ribbons in her hair at the base of her ears. This more feminine appearance, and generally cheerful personality when compared to others like the thrill-seeking Tania, obscures the fact she is her group's physical powerhouse and a solid martial artist.
  • I Owe You My Life: She insists Rein tame her as thanks for rescuing her from certain death at terrible risk to his own life and wiping out his funds feeding her when he didn't have enough for himself.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl:
    • She insists on sharing a bedroom with Rein immediately after being tamed because she knows he won't try anything unbecoming.
    • When the girls decide to take a dip in a lake, Kanade undresses right away, making the others remind her that Rein's still there.
  • Kick Chick: Her preferred fighting style. While Kanade does use punches on occasion, nearly every time she enters combat she relies primarily on kicks. Her first and most frequently seen move is a drop kick from above, and kicks or knee attacks are her typical opening move in a given fight.
  • Lightning Bruiser: As Aggath notes during their fight, not only is she fast but each of her Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs hits with the force of a hammer.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Has cat ears and a tail and peppers her speech with meows/nyas.
  • Magically Inept Fighter: She's not only unable to use magic, but she's also especially vulnerable to it.
  • The Pollyanna: She is always the one who cheers her teammates up whenever the party is caught in a difficult situation.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: When she's not using her kicks, complete with battle cries not unlike Star Platinum's.
  • Restored My Faith in Humanity: She's met many humans before Rein and they always had an ulterior motive for her. When she meets Rein, who does not, she insists he tame her, so she can get back to her training journey.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Though her hair is a shade of orange, the trope still applies as she's a total sweetheart.
  • Significant Green-Eyed Redhead: She's got green eyes and orange hair, and she's the first girl in Rein's harem, giving him Super-Strength as part of the tamer contract.
  • Verbal Tic: Like many a Cat Girl before and since, Kanade tends to pepper "Nyas" (Meows) into her speech, sometimes integrating them with actual words like "Nyaice" instead of "Nice". She also frequently puts cat puns into her speech as well.
  • Walking the Earth: The Cat Spirits live quietly deep in the mountains, but Kanade found this life tedious and uninteresting, prompting her to leave home and go on a journey, which is how she met Rein.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She is deathly afraid of ghosts. However, when pushed far enough, she will transform into a feral style of fighting (and state of mind) that grants her the ability to damage them.

    Tania

Tania

Honestly, you are too kind for your own good, human!

Encountered by Rain and Kanade while on an adventurer's quest to find and defeat a dragon that was harassing adventurers on a bridge, disrupting the flow of goods and people. Turns out she is that dragon, looking to challenge herself as part of her people's culture. She joins the party out of respect for being defeated honestly, per her people's custom of traveling with and learning from the stronger warriors they meet as the rite to adulthood.

  • Anti-Magic: In addition to her impressive firepower and magical utility, she can also nullify various spells cast by her opponents, as she demonstrates when facing the Hero Party's two mages at the same time.
  • The Archmage: When she's up against both spellcasters of the Hero's party, she demonstrates mastery over spells they never even knew of.
  • Badass Finger Snap: She nullifies all the spells from both of the mages of the officially named "hero" party by snapping her fingers.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: She falls for Rein when she realizes how much of a good person he is.
  • Big Eater: When Tania shares a meal with Rein and Kanade for the first time, Rein notes that Tania can pack it in every bit as much as Kanade.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: When Rein and Kanade first meet Tania, she's hanging around a bridge challenging any adventurers to a fight when they pass by. Following her defeat, she takes an interest in Rein, and because of this, thinking she can get more training by hanging around him and Kanade, asks to join the group and form a contract with Rein.
  • Draconic Humanoid: Even in her human form, she sports a dragon's tail that she keeps hidden under her dress and impressive horns on her head.
  • Horned Humanoid: As a result of being a dragon, her human form has horns.
  • Humble Pie: When Rein's party is dealing with a gang of orcs, known to be very cunning, she laughs off Rein's warning, saying there's no way an orc can beat her. In terms of pure prowess, this is true. Unfortunately, one of them fakes being on the brink of death, so she overconfidently strides over to finish the job only to get grabbed by the leg and knocked to the ground while a second orc comes in from behind. She could have been killed if Rein didn't take the second orc's stab on her behalf. She's pretty shaken up about it for most of Episode 4.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Her human form wears fancy dresses and still kicks plenty of ass.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: Dragonoids are number two when it comes to magical power, second only to the Fairy race. Unlike the squishier Fairies, however, Dragons are just as capable physically. As a result, Tania is as powerful in hand-to-hand combat as Kanade and as strong in magic as Sora and Runa combined, and both are more powerful than the norm for fairies, which are already quite powerful in magic. When Tania fights Rein and Kanade, she and Kanade are a match despite physical power being the Cat Spirits' specialty and takes advantage by having magic on top of that. She is only defeated by Kanade and Rein working together.
  • Mentor Archetype: She teaches Rein how to handle magic, once he gets the power boost from her so that his basic spells are strong enough to blow away all but the strongest opponents.
  • Ms. Fanservice: The most well-endowed of Rein’s Battle Harem with very flattering apparel to match. Her regular costume shows off a good deal of her legs and backside. Even her sleepwear is a sheer negligee which shows off her ample bosom.
  • Open Secret: Rein tries to keep her identity as a Dragonkin secret, passing her off as an enthusiastic cosplayer so that she can avoid the ire of the locals about the bridge incident. However, it is revealed that they have known all along and do not mind at all.
  • Sexy Slit Dress: Has a hip-high slit in her skirt to show off her legs.
  • Walking the Earth: The rule of the Dragonoids is that when one turns fifteen, they go on a journey to train and become stronger. Tania is currently on that journey, though not particularly interested in the training aspect. This is why she opts to join Rein, as she's interested in him and assumes she'll get just as much training done by being with him and Kanade.
  • Weredragon: The first time we see Tania, she flies over Rein and Kanade's heads in the form of a dragon. Upon landing, she transforms and takes on a more humanoid form with horns and a tail, which she retains from that point onward.

Runa

A pair of twin sister fairies Rein, Kanade, and Tania encounter in the Lost Forest. Their job is to protect the Shield of Truth contained within.

The group first encounters the elder twin, Sora, in her role as protector of the Shield of Truth kept by the fairies. Despite fairies being distrustful of humans after many interracial skirmishes, she still provides the shield to Rein after he proves himself worthy. Rein then offers her his aid, even after having this shield asking for no reward, at which point she tells him about Runa's capture by a monster called the Shadow Knight, a general of the Demon Lord's army. She joins up with Rein after Runa does, in gratitude for her life, ostensibly to keep an eye on him and to make sure Runa's safe from his antics, or so she claims...

Runa, the younger twin, is first shown as the captive of the Shadow Knight. After being rescued by Rein, she shows herself to be much more outgoing and mischievous compared to her reserved older sister, and signs on to his party as a tamed fairy out of gratitude, with Sora signing up soon after to keep them out of trouble, or so she claims...

Tropes shared by both twins:

  • A-Cup Angst: Are envious of Tania and Kanade after seeing their exposed chests while bathing in the lake.
  • I Owe You My Life: Both sisters are grateful to Rein for saving Runa's life, but each has a separate reason as well for letting themselves be Tamed. For Runa, being Rein's familiar means she gets to explore outside of Lost Forest, which she was bored out of her skull. While Sora claims she's coming along mainly to keep an eye on Runa, she's also hurt by Runa's abandonment by the other fairies and doesn't want to stay around them.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: Though identical, the twins can be differentiated by the flowers in their hair. The more reserved Sora wears a closed flower on the left side, while the more mischievous, outgoing Runa wears an open flower on her right. In the anime, Runa's eyes and flower are blue while Sora's have more of a greenish color.
  • Older Than They Look: When Rein takes them out for a day, he notes that the twins both look and act very much like any other young girl. Runa in particular has a mischievous streak a mile wide and can be just as playful as a precocious human child. However, Sora and Runa are over 200 years old.
  • Rule of Symbolism: Sora's blue flower is closed tight, symbolizing her shy and closed-off nature. Runa's flower is open to showcase her open and mischievous nature.
  • Signature Headgear: The twins each wear flowers in their hair, Sora a closed flower on the left side of her head, and Runa an open flower on the right. The flowers reflect their contrasting personalities and serve as their Identical Twin ID Tag.
  • Squishy Wizard: Their magical abilities are second to none but their physical stamina is another story. A short walk while on a quest leaves the twins utterly exhausted.
  • Winged Humanoid: The girls have thin gossamer wings similar to dragonflies that they can hide with magic to appear human if it's needed.

Tropes specific to Sora:

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Sora is the more polite and reserved of the fairy sisters, but she can be frightening when angry. The group gets a good look at this when Sora is infuriated at Runa for casting poison magic on Rein out of nowhere to confirm his newly revealed status effect nullification. Sora starts shaking and scolding Runa to explain herself, and does so again when Runa tries to claim the ends justify the means. The scene scares the newly introduced Nina while both Rein and Tania remark that they should avoid getting on Sora's bad side.
  • Covert Pervert: Despite being more reserved than her sister, when Runa suggests a whip as Rein's weapon, Sora is the one who starts getting perverted thoughts about it even before Runa starts implying it.
  • Too Desperate to Be Picky: Despite being suspicious of humans, she asks Rein for help to rescue her sister from the Demon Lord's general because there was nobody else to call, and her people couldn't help anyway as the guy was highly resistant, if not outright immune, to their magic.
  • Third-Person Person: Sora refers to herself in the third person, occasionally introducing herself by saying "Sora's name is Sora."
  • Tsundere: She clearly likes Rein, but her distrust of humans in general and her pride keep her from expressing it.

Tropes specific to Runa:

  • The Gadfly: She loves teasing her sister, among others. Runa's Establishing Character Moment features her describing all the unspeakable things that might have happened to her while in the Shadow Knight's clutches to get a reaction out of everyone else, immediately marking her as more precocious than her sibling.
  • Nothing Exciting Ever Happens Here: She wanted out of Lost Forest out of boredom, and the one time something interesting did happen, she was dragged away by Shadow Knight for the Demon Lord. Naturally, she's excited to be traveling with Rein Shroud.
  • Verbal Tic: Runa tends to end sentences with "nanoda", or just "noda" for short. It's one of the things that sets her apart from her sister Sora, who is more of a Third-Person Person.

Stop, stop it please! Don't hurt yourself for me, Rein!!

A member of the demigod race, she is found by Rein inside Edgar Fromware's dungeon basement, wearing a slave collar and abused. He uses his tamer magic to free her from the collar at terrible pain to himself, to her distress. The reason she was there is that Edgar had somehow found the remote mountain village where she was being worshipped and demanded she be handed over, in exchange for the lives of her parishioners. With the villagers unable to defend themselves, she agreed and has endured horrific torture since then.

  • All-Loving Heroine: Except for her tormentor Edgar, she's kind to everyone.
  • Beast Man: She sports fox ears on her head and three fox tails.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: She was quite unhappy as Edgar's slave, but being in a tamer contract with Rein has her tickled pink because she can mingle among human society without fear of being one-sidedly worshipped, abused, or feared.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Invokes this in nearly everyone.
  • The Cutie: She's an adorable, petite fox girl whom every girl in Rein's party wants to cuddle.
  • The Dog Bites Back: She helps Rein defeat demonized Edgar.
  • Heroes' Frontier Step: When she realizes how far the girls and knights are going to protect her and everyone, Nina decides she can't let herself be protected anymore and runs to help Rein defeat the demon.
  • Made a Slave: Since her worshippers could not defend themselves from Edgar's knights, she allowed him to put a slave collar on her and has been his captive for years.
  • Physical God: She is a member of the demigod race and is worshipped as a god in her home village.
  • Spoiled Sweet: When she lived at the shrine, her worshippers would dote on her, tending to her every whim, and it all made her gentle, kind, and completely adorable.
  • Teleport Spam: She's capable of teleporting in quick succession without the need to create elaborate spell circles like Sora and Runa do.

A ghost who had been haunting a mansion where she was killed until Rein Shroud came and bought the mansion. She later becomes his sixth contractual after Rein helped her in arresting her murderer and now stays at Rein's residence as a maid.

  • Cute Ghost Girl: She's a ghost and still retains her original cute looks from when she was alive.
  • Fog Feet: From her knees down her feet are hazy and amorphous, which helps signify she's a ghost. Averted in the anime, where her lower half looks normal but is see-through.
  • Meido: Was a maid when she was alive and continues to be one after forming a contract with Rein.
  • Mind over Matter: As befitting for a ghost, she possesses poltergeist-like powers of moving things around with her mind.
  • Poke the Poodle: When first encountered, she makes the furniture move, and a lot of scary noises, but Tania & Rein both realize she does not try to attack any of them. Only Kanade is still scared at this point, so she tries focusing on frightening the cat-girl into leaving. This does not work out as Tina planned. She then tries to possess Rein, and that pretty much ends the "fight".
  • Poltergeist: All she can do to scare people as a ghost is possessing various objects in the mansion she resides in while telling people to get out.

    Iris

Iris

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/iris_light_novel.png

One of the last members of the Celestial Tribe, considered the most powerful of the Ultimate Species.

  • Dark and Troubled Past: Hoh-oh boy. After the original Hero defeated the Demon King, both humans and Celestials were exhausted and faced extinction. When some greedy and selfish humans invited the Celestials to a human city to "celebrate", they poisoned the food the Celestials were given, subjugated and confined them in a laboratory, and used them as guinea pigs to extract their powers to enhance humans, torturing and killing every celestial in the process, with Iris being the only one to escape.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: She has devoured several humans with ecstatic glee.
  • Irony: She's part of the Celestial Tribe, the closest thing to angels in the series, yet she's given the moniker "Devil".
  • Our Angels Are Different: The Celestial Tribe are a race that was blessed by the gods, making them similar but different to the gods and executing the will of the heavens.
  • Really 700 Years Old: She may look like a little girl, but she's been alive since the time of the original hero. Granted, she was sealed for at least some of that time, but still.
  • Last of Her Kind: For a long time she believed she was the only member of the Celestial Tribe left. However, later it is found that Iris' friend Ophelia also survived thanks to the original hero Reinhardt.
  • Winged Humanoid: She has four pairs of wings.

    Rifa

Rifa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rifa_light_novel.png

Rifa is a member of the Oni Race who can manipulate her blood to use as a weapon and perform powerful shadow magic. She meets Rein and the others while looking for help to deal with demons attacking her hometown.

Hero's Party

    As a Whole
Rein's former party, who kicked him out at the start of the story after deeming him useless for, at the time, having no combat capability.
  • Assumed Win: When they picked a fight with Rein's party, they all thought they would stomp the latter with ease, due to the force of numbers and self-perceived superiority. They all wound up on the wrong end of a curb stomp.
  • Back Handed Apology: When they approach Rein in Episode 5 because they need him to go into Lost Forest to get the Shield of Truth for them, their first approach is to offer empty pleasantries and then say they reflected on their actions and more or less state they're "sorry [they] had to fire [him] for being weak and useless." and have the gall to be offended when Rein and party take that as an insult.
  • Beat Them at Their Own Game:
    • On the wrong end. Arios and Aggath, the physical fighters, got punched to the ground by Rein and Kanade respectively and the two mages got stomped by Tania despite outnumbering her two to one.
    • Rein's party starts to do this to them by completing important quests and protecting the people of Horizon from a demon attack while the Hero Party slacks off and complains. This finally comes back to bite them in the ass at the end of the anime; Rein and his friends are seen as heroes and beloved by the townspeople, while Arios and his party are effectively banished for being useless freeloaders.
  • Broken Pedestal: After Arios committed crimes too heinous for them to protect him anymore and then went so far as to betray them personally, they stopped seeing him as "the hero" and proceed to see him as nothing more than a dirty traitor.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of The Chosen One. Because Arios is the descendant of the divine hero and is destined to defeat the demon lord, he and his party treat that as a license to do whatever and treat anyone however they want with no consequences. For instance, they fire Rein for his perceived uselessness, and when he refuses to rejoin them, they are insulted that he would dare turn them down.
  • Didn't Think This Through: They deemed Rein useless and (very cruelly) kicked him out of the group because, at the time, he wasn't much of a fighter (actually he did know martial arts but it just wasn’t useful against their regular monster adversaries) so they believed he was just holding them back. Once he's gone they realize that they are both too lazy to do the things they made Rein do for them (carrying their luggage, scouting, nightwatch, cleaning their weapons, etc) and that it is a hassle trying to do that and their normal duties. But when they start looking for a new Beast Tamer to do those things, they failed to realize how exceptional Rein was as a Beast Tamer. For instance, being able to command multiple animals instead of just one, and figured out too late that they needed him to access the Lost Forest in their goal of defeating the Demon King. Even so, they are so arrogant and self-righteous that they cannot admit that they were wrong and still call him a weakling and insist that their firing him was justifiable while simultaneously trying to recruit him back.
  • Entitled Bastard: They presumed that Rein would be begging to be let back into the party, so they planned to sign him on to get the Shield of Truth and then just summarily dump him again. When he refuses to even hear them out until they apologize for unfairly firing him the first time, they pick a fight with Rein's party and have to be stomped and ordered to apologize before Rein will hear them out.
    • This backfires on them in Episode 13, when the Hero's Party demands free food and provisions from a local merchant in Horizon mere days after Rein and his party saved the town from a demon attack, while the "heroes" sat back and did nothing to help. The merchant and the rest of the shopkeepers in the marketplace tell them to get lost, and soon a mob of angry townspeople all but run them out of town for being a bunch of lazy, cowardly freeloaders.
  • Hate Sink: The so-called "Hero Party" is only heroic in name only. They do not care one bit about the commoners and would rather cozy up with the rich in lives of luxury. In addition, they are completely entitled and incapable of admitting fault. So much so that they are forced to give an apology for how they treated Rein, and even then, the "apology" was half-hearted.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: The way they banished Rein at the start of the story was heartless, but he was in a very vulnerable position, and it's not likely he would have survived a direct clash with the Demon Lord's armies. Later subverted once they realized how crucial he was in navigating the Lost Forest to acquire the Shield of Truth.
  • Laziness Callout: The townspeople of Horizon chew them out for not helping out during the demon attack yet still expecting to essentially be waited on hand and foot by everyone.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Banishing Rein led to him meeting Kanade, improving the lives of both.
  • Never My Fault: After firing Rein, they were unwilling to admit that any Beast Tamer they hired after Rein was incapable of pulling off the amazing feats that Rein could.
  • Nominal Hero: They're only known as heroes because their leader, Arios Orlando, inherited the Humanity's Hero title to fight the Demon Lord and its armies. There is nothing heroic about their characters, at all, for a considerable part of the story.
  • Ordered Apology: Kanade and Tania order them to apologize before Rein will hear them out. When Kanade ordered the apology, they picked a fight and lost. They were much more sincere when Tania did it because they knew they'd get stomped with ease, but except for Aggath, they still don't believe they did anything wrong.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: Despite being a party of adventurers who are supposed to be taking missions to save the world and defeat the Demon King, they accomplish very little without Rein around and seem to spend most of their time waiting around and complaining.
    • When Mina and Leanne take a side job guarding a merchant convoy to make ends meet, they get "tired of walking" and abandon their posts, resulting in the convoy being attacked by bandits in their absence. They have to threaten the replacement beast tamer into silence so he doesn't inform the Adventurers' Guild they violated their contract by running away.
    • They spent weeks wandering the Labyrinth Forest trying to find a holy shield for their quest, eventually giving up and hiring Rein to do it for them. He finds it in 2 days, to their shock and embarrassment.
    • When Horizon is attacked by Demons, they decide not to come to the defense of the town and its people, using flimsy excuses like "our job is to fight the Demon King, not his subordinates" and "if the townspeople can't protect themselves, it's their fault." Of course, in Arios' case, it's because he's responsible for unleashing the demon in the first place. This proves to be the last straw for the townsfolk, who label all four of them dirty cowards for not fighting after making such a big deal about how they're supposedly humanity's saviors and refuse to do business with them anymore.
  • Professional Butt-Kisser: They spend the vast majority of their downtime rubbing elbows with the rich, powerful, and nobility, but they treat commoners as the dirt beneath their boots. Mina and Leanne even abandoned a merchant escort contract (who, fortunately, was rescued by Rein and Kanade afterward) the instant they found themselves at a tactical disadvantage and terrorized the temporarily hired beast-tamer for not performing his role as well as Rein did.
  • Removing the Crucial Teammate: Kicking out Rein ends up screwing them over very quickly.
  • Slobs Versus Snobs: They are the snobs who see everyone who isn't wealthy or nobility as slobs that they'd rather stare down their nose at than interact with.
  • Wants a Prize for Basic Decency: They presumed Rein would happily accept their request to go into Lost Forest if they just gave him a Back Handed Apology with absolutely no sincerity. When Rein continues to refuse, they then tell him about the shield they need from Lost Forest and how the Demon Lord's army would bear down on humanity if they can't get it. When Rein then accepts the request for humanity's sake, not because it's the party asking him, they all have the gall to be offended and spew a bunch of insults, especially towards Rein's "lack of intelligence" for wasting their time. Kanade and Tania take serious offense and demand a sincere apology, with the entire hero party getting on their hands and knees, and throwing their insults back at them when they refuse. Cue an epic beatdown in favor of Rein's party as a result of the fight the hero's party themselves demanded.
  • The Worf Effect: Supposedly, the Hero Party is made up of the strongest and most talented adventurers in the land. But when they pick a fight with Rein and his familiars they quickly get their asses handed to them, showing just how powerful Rein and his new friends have become.
  • Wrong Assumption: Because Rein was initially desperate to not be kicked out of the party, they all presumed he'd be desperate to be let back in. When he wasn't, they have the gall to be offended.

    Arios Orlando

Arios Orlando

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/arios_orlando.png
Come on, don't you get it, Loser? You are weak, dead weight. WE DON'T WANT YOU HERE! GET LOST!!

Introduced as Humanity's Hero on the quest to defeat the evil Demon Lord. Because of this and inheriting the position over generations, he thinks he's infallible and can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, to whomever he wants, without consequence. He reacts very, very poorly when this is not the case.

  • Arch-Enemy: Throughout the series he becomes Rein's personal nemesis, putting more effort into trying to kill him than his actual quest of defeating the Demon Lord. Eventually he abandons humanity entirely and joins up with the Demon Lord’s army to get his revenge.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: With the Demon Lord after turning his back on humanity. He also briefly joins forces with Edgar when Rein proves too much for the latter to handle by giving him a ring that is capable of killing Rein. Whether or not he was aware that Edgar would use this to become fully demonic and attack his own citizens is anyone's guess.
  • Demon of Human Origin: After betraying humanity and joining the Demon Lord, he's transformed into a demon.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • He looted a dangerously cursed ring when he defeated a powerful demon army vanguard that he can't destroy, can't sell, and can't keep, or use himself. He wants murderous vengeance against Rein Shroud. Why not deal with both problems by handing the ring off to someone else who has a grudge against Rein and letting that guy use it? And if by some miracle Rein wins the coming fight, why not charge Rein with murder? PERFECT! At least, that's what went on in his head. In truth, not only does Rein's target have a long laundry list of crimes that the king wanted him to answer for, but using the cursed ring turned the guy into a demon, as such, killing him is no crime, and the fact that Arios is the only person who could have provided the ring is easy enough to deduce...
    • Whether or not he realized it, him giving Edgar, a Psychopathic Manchild with an ironclad grip over his citizens, the ring to eliminate Rein and his party meant he was only speeding up Edgar's downfall faster. Not only did Rein prove to be completely unaffected by the ring's One-Hit Kill abilities. But Edgar would transform into a demon shortly after, and only turned his attention back onto Rein when directly confronted during an attack on his own citizens.
    • While the demon was attacking Horizon, he gets it in his head to not participate in the defense of the town with the excuse that the demon was a small fry and that the local adventurers are more than enough to defeat it, never-mind the fact that he's the hero and defeating demons is supposed to be his duty. He wanted to minimize his involvement and hoped the demon would kill Rein, but he failed to take into account that even if his plan succeeded, the nosedive it would take to his reputation due to his inactivity would still occur. Needless to say, by the time the dust settled the populace sees him as a coward and next to the lord and Edgar he's the most hated person in town.
  • Entitled Bastard: While the rest of his hero party is already pretty bad at this, he takes it even further. He wants murderous vengeance because Rein wasn't willing to happily beg to be let back into the party to go after the Shield of Truth, and then let himself be kicked out again, and when the party is trying to recruit a replacement tamer, unable to do even 1% of what Rein could, he went apoplectic, verbally abusing all the applicants, and giving his party death glares for so much as suggesting that he was wrong in firing Rein, to begin with.
  • Fallen Hero: He is stripped of his hero title and skill when his crimes become too much for anyone to stand, and he turns on Humanity as a whole, joining the demon lord's army.
  • Fantastic Racism: When he realizes that Rein had tamed Kanade and Tania, two members of the ultimate species, he at first believes that Rein had them around as trophies instead of considering that they served Rein of their own volition. He then outright admits to viewing them as inferior to humans.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: In Episode 5, he openly attacks Rein with lethal force for daring to retaliate to his insults against himself and his party thus "rejecting his mercy." When Rein manages to outfight him and has him paralyzed on the ground, using the very Beast Tamer ability Arios loved to mock, Arios finally realizes he's in deep trouble and begs for forgiveness and mercy. He gets it. As seen in the translated manga and novel chapters, he "thanks" Rein for it by trying to murder him and when that goes poorly joins the demon king army and turns on humanity as a whole, for not realizing his "heroic greatness."
  • Foil: To Rein. While Arios is the "Hero" in accordance with his inheriting Limit Breaker, he is far from the definition of being a hero because he prioritizes associating with the wealthy while turning a blind eye to the common folks. He flaunts his status as the hero and views his party members as disposable accessories. Rein, on the other hand, does good deeds because he did not want anyone else to suffer the tragedies he had, making him well-liked by the villagers due to lacking the Hero Party's haughtiness.
  • Hated by All: A lot of people who got to know Arios personally already disliked him for being an obnoxious narcissist. But after his crimes became so severe that not even his title as a hero can offer him legal protection, leading to his title being revoked, Arios ends up being hated by all of humanity for his treasonous actions, especially after he becomes a demon and joins the Demon Lord's army. Even his formerly loyal party ends up losing all respect for Arios after he stabs them in the back.
  • Heroic Lineage: He comes from a long line of heroes. This makes him extremely haughty, presuming he will always be Humanity's hero, no matter what he does.
  • I Control My Minions Through...: Fear. Aside from rare occasions where the three others make a united front against him, he constantly browbeats, cows, and threatens the rest of the party into doing his will and they all walk on eggshells around him. It is later proven that Fear Is the Appropriate Response when he becomes a demon and comes back for them. Aggath and Mina are killed and Leanne is turned into a demon against her will.
  • It's All About Me: As far as he's concerned, everybody is just an accessory to his heroic tale. Anyone that upsets him for any reason doesn't deserve to live.
  • Magic Knight: He both wields a sword and uses magic to fight, though his magic is not as strong as Leanne's or Mina's.
  • Narcissist: He has a huge ego due to his coming from a long line of heroes. He thinks so highly of his status he is truly left mystified when Rein refuses to work with him. He can never acknowledge his mistakes when things go wrong, and he hates the implication that he could have been wrong to have fired Rein in the first place.
  • Never My Fault: It's not his fault he picked a fight with Rein's party, and lost. Nor is it his fault his scheme to use Edgar Fromware failed. It's certainly not his fault those rotten plebeians fail to recognize how magnificent a "hero" he is! It sure as hell isn't his fault his former party sees him as a traitor, no sir. It's everybody else's fault, especially that damn Rein Shroud that should have been sucking up to him when he came along with the magnanimous offer to return to the party just to be kicked out again when he's no longer needed!
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: By giving the cursed ring to Edgar, he ensured the sociopathic Spoiled Brat would be put down and got his "Hero" title revoked.
  • Nominal Hero: He's only a hero because he inherited the title and Hero skill, Limit Breaker. His behavior is anything but heroic.
  • The Poorly Chosen One: He was sent off to fight the Demon Lord's armies because he inherited the Hero skill Limit Breaker, but his actions are anything but heroic. After a while there is another, and his Hero title and skill are taken away.
  • Revenge Myopia: He always wants murderous vengeance against anyone who spurns or offends him. He refuses to admit that the vast majority of the time, said offenses are a direct result of his own bad behavior.
  • The Sociopath: About the only checkpoint missing is an on-screen pathological need for entertainment, but the rest is all there. He honestly only sees others as tools for his own "heroic" tale, has an over-inflated view of his own importance, only understands "a hero does this and doesn't do that" but not why that is, and whenever things don't go his way, or he has to suffer consequences, then he wants bloody vengeance against whom he sees as being responsible for his hardship, never realizing when that hardship is a direct result of his actions.
  • Sore Loser: He loathes losing at anything, as such, he sought out murderous vengeance when Rein punched him to the ground after he insulted Kanade and the rest of Rein's party first. Later, he decides to help out Edgar with his own grudge against Rein by giving him all he needs to defeat the tamer and his familiars.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Believe it or not, but according to the Web Novel, in the past Arios was a kind person who would help anyone in need even before he became the chosen Hero. What happened that turned him into the delusional jerkass at the start of the series is anyone's guess.
  • Vetinari Job Security: Deconstructed. Because he's the Hero and the only one who can deal with the Demon Lord's armies, people tended to just pinch their noses and put up with his barbaric behavior. This began to fade as Rein started to provide an alternative, and came to a screeching halt when his crimes became so bad that even being a Hero was no longer sufficient to protect him from the consequences, so the kingdom found another.

Hey. Maybe we can get Rein back, for just the one mission, and then dump him again!

The knight of the party. He wears heavy armor and wields a giant sword.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: The anime removes the one feature that redeems him compared to the rest of the party. In Episode 7, he leads the charge to invite Rein back to the Hero's party and makes clear that they were wrong to fire him. All but Arios agree. When Rein still hesitates, he subverts all his earlier redemption by sneering and saying "Come on, don't focus on what happened in the distant past." This has Rein shaking with rage as the "distant past" was just minutes ago where Arios impugned Rein's character by suggesting the Shield of Truth was fake and having Mina appraise it. The rest of the party looks at Rein as an idiot for rejecting their "benevolence" save for Arios who starts scheming to kill him for daring to fight back and win.
  • BFS: Wields a giant claymore.
  • Defiant to the End: In the anime's Episode 5, he is the only member of the hero party to go down fighting, getting KO'd after being kicked into a boulder. The rest were defeated by humiliation, begging for mercy and fainting in terror, when they realized that Rein and crew out-class them by orders of magnitude. Subverted at the last minute when he begs for mercy just before Kanade's final blow hits.
  • Pet the Dog: He's the only one in the party willing to admit that firing Rein was a mistake and, after Rein delivered the Shield of Truth, sincerely offered the chance to join the hero party again.
  • The Worf Effect: He's shown taking down powerful monsters easily twice his height and many times his girth, but he loses to Kanade without the latter even trying.

There are no more candidates. The best of them didn't even come close to... (better not mention that name).

The priestess of the party.

  • Healing Hands: She specializes in healing magic and status buffs.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: When she needs to use her magic offensively, she can hurl out blasts of holy magic coming from the god she worships.
  • Light Is Not Good: She wears white, worships a god of goodness, and uses holy magic. She's also an arrogant and elitist bully who sees commoners and demi-humans as beneath her and doesn't hesitate to hurl out holy magic against people who dare to point this out.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Deconstructed. She truly believed that only Arios can defeat the Demon Lord and sided with him in all things until he goes too far and turns on her in self-righteous rage.
  • Super-Empowering: Like Rein, she can boost the power of her teammates for a time, but it only works on humans as opposed to Rein's tamed "beasts" restriction.
  • Tautological Templar: She honestly believes that because the god she worships is inherently good and infallible then she is inherently good and infallible. Thus treating any insults towards herself as insults towards her god and vice versa. So, when Tania throws her insults against Rein back at her, she goes apoplectic and tries to launch a holy crusade, only to have her highly vaulted spells finger-snapped to nothing, even with Leanne backing her, and when they are both exhausted, Tania retaliates with a magic spell leagues above what both of them combined could ever hope to accomplish, calling off the spell when they faint.
  • White Magician Girl: Played with. She serves the role of party healer and stat booster but she lacks the caring and gentle nature one usually expects, being just as selfish and abrasive as the rest of them.

    Leanne

To think, we have to rely on that weakling!

The mage of the party. She usually dresses like a stereotypical witch.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: While Leanne was a cruel and unlikeable person, Arios' betrayal of her and Monica forcefully turning her into a mindless demon is played for all the horror and sympathy it's worth. This is what leads Aggath and Mina to turn on Arios after finally seeing him for the evil man he really is.
  • Always a Bigger Fish: She learns the hard way, alongside Mina, that even combined, they are small fry compared to a Tania that wasn't even trying, getting their clocks cleaned by her.
  • Blackmail: Pulls this card when the first replacement Beast Tamer she and Mina worked with calls them out on their uselessness by telling him to admit to his own failure as a tamer. She then threatens to subject him to repeated deaths until he cracks and admits defeat back to the guild.
  • Demon of Human Origin: Is turned into a demon against her will by Monica.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: In Episode 2, she grills the tamer her party had hired temporarily on why he didn't do even 1% of what Rein could. When he retorts this is an impossibly high standard, she thinks he's lying as Rein believed his feats were on the low end of normal, and the party had no other beast tamers work with them. It's not until Arios has interviewed a great many tamers that she and the rest of the party realize that Rein's idea of "normal" was wrong and there's no other that could come anywhere close, but not only have they burned every possible bridge with him, Arios himself is completely hostile to Rein over a self-inflicted grudge.
  • Witch Classic: She has a pointy tip, wide-brimmed hat, long and strangely colored hair (purple) and she wears standard witch attire. She backs up the look with powerful magic.
  • The Worf Effect: She's shown beating powerful monsters but even after being buffed by Mina got her clock cleaned by Tania with the latter not even trying.

Here is your quest reward, Rein-san!

The adventurer's guild receptionist whom Rein usually interacts with.

  • Consummate Professional: Regardless of her feelings, she does her job as the receptionist with strict professionalism.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Brown hair and eyes.
  • The Fake Cutie: She looks adorable while she's doing her job, but she's actually far scarier than she appears, even terrifying Kanade when the two met and she was grilling Rein on how he managed to tame a Cat spirit on the adventurer qualifier exam.
  • Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: Thinking she's just a friendly receptionist and acting up in the guild is a terrible mistake. She's strong enough to smack a guy down with a table likely weighing several hundred pounds, as she demonstrates in Episode 2 when a known trouble-maker first accosts Rein, trying to get at Kanade, and pulls on and tries to look up her skirt after Rein arm-wrestled him to the ground. Then she drags the guy away...

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gantz_storf_anime.png

The dwarf blacksmith from whom Rein receives a quest to investigate his mithril mine, with a promised reward of a custom-built dagger.

  • Quest Giver: He nominates Rein to find out why his mithril mine is going dry unexpectedly.
  • Our Dwarves Are All the Same: He's got a long beard, works on the forge, views his custom-crafted weapons as if they're his children, and tends to be rather grumpy to those who don't appreciate smithing.
  • True Craftsman: Gantz Storf is a dwarven blacksmith and weapon shop owner in the town Rein lives in. By the time Rein meets him, he's reached a point where seeing his beloved creations be viewed as nothing more than "good weapons" has disheartened him, prompting him to put out worse products with short life cycles that look good for regular sale, and keep the quality and detailed masterpieces for customers who can spot the difference. This comes back to bite him, as the antagonists in his introductory arc are adventurers he sold his shoddy wares to trying to ruin him by sabotaging his source of the mithril used in his finer creations. Gantz realizes afterward that he was making a big mistake in evaluating his customers the way he had, and resolves to resume making all of his weapons with the heart and soul he had before.

Save it, Lord Fromware. Just accept your arrest quietly!

The second in command of the knights at the town of Horizon. She's always hated the rule of Edgar Fromware and Edgar's father but with the knights all under the control of her superior Gillet, evidence buried, and witnesses silenced, there was nothing she could do, until Edgar himself gave her the opportunity by antagonizing Rein on a public street, giving her a powerful ally with a grudge and a cause.

  • Amazon Brigade: Her personal squad is an all-female group of highly trained knights.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She's a woman with blond hair and a strong sense of justice. She's the one who approaches Rein for aid in dealing with the corrupt knights and the Fronwares.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Because of the Fromware family's unabashed cruelty to the people and her own family, she turned on them, leading the knights that Gillet and Edgar didn't manage to corrupt or replace.
  • Number Two: Until her superior Gillet Stregger turned himself in at the end of Edgar's reign, she was second in command of the knights.
  • To Be Lawful or Good: Lawful would have meant following Edgar's repulsive policies and following his orders, no questions asked. Good meant turning on him and destroying his tyranny the first chance she got, even if she has to bend a few rules. She chooses "good."

New Hero Party

    As a Whole
  • Edible Theme Naming: Everyone in the party are named after various desserts, highlighting their sweet nature.
  • Redeeming Replacement: To Arios' Hero party, being truly heroic compared to their predecessor.

    Chiffon Nox

Chiffon Nox

Chiffon Nox is the current Hero who was chosen by King Argus very carefully to replace the traitorous Arios Orlando. She is the leader of the next generation of the Hero's Party. She is also a fan of Rein Shroud and his companions.
  • All-Loving Heroine: Like Rein, Chiffon cares for everyone, the only exception being Arios.
  • Edible Theme Naming: She's named after the chiffon cake.
  • Hero Worship: She's a big fan of Rein and his companions, wanting to become just as powerful as them. She also has a crush on Rein.
  • Redeeming Replacement: To Arios. Whereas Arios is selfish, delusional, egotistical, and only cared for himself, Chiffon is a selfless, kindhearted, and all-loving individual. She also treats her teammates as her friends (unlike Arios who viewed his teammates as disposable pawns).

Royal Family

    King Argus

Argus Van Rollreeze

The benevolent king of the Central, Southern, and Eastern continents, Argus was the one who originally picked Arios to be the hero, a choice he would come to regret.

  • The Good King: King Argus is a benevolent ruler and he cares deeply for people, even apologizing to Rein for what happened due to Arios' betrayal.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: He chose Arios to be the current Hero, not realizing that he'll become a delusional jerkass. Subverted after Arios' betrayal, taking Rein's advice to pick the next Hero far more carefully.

    Prince Yuki

Yuki

The crown prince of the Central, Southern, and Eastern continents. He is the son and heir of Argus Van Rollreeze. He is the older brother of Princess Sarya.

  • The Wise Prince: Like his father, Yuki is a benevolent prince who cares for his people, and even apologized to Rein with his father for what happened due to Arios' betrayal.

    Princess Sarya

The princess of the Central, Southern, and Eastern continents. She is the daughter of King Argus Van Rollreeze and the younger sister of Prince Yuki.

Enemies

    The illegal miners
A group of adventurers that decided since they got mass-produced weapons from Gantz, instead of "the best," and believe that they deserve "righteous vengeance" by stealing from his mine so he can't craft any more weapons. They attack Rein and party with lethal force when he catches them in the act.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Even Rein is taken aback by the group's ability to tame a monster, specifically a Behemoth, as they are next-to-impossible to tame without getting killed. When he cancels the contract it has with them, the Behemoth quickly turns on them, forcing Rein to kill the confused monster.
  • Evil Is Petty: They try to destroy Gantz's livelihood, and murder anyone who catches them in the act because they're butt-hurt that Gantz won't bend over backward to fashion them "the best" weapons, that they probably planned on throwing away later.
  • Leave No Witnesses: They respond to being caught stealing with lethal force with the aid of a Behemoth, so they won't get arrested.
  • Miles Gloriosus: They, especially their tamer, love to brag about how they're "the best." There's nothing special about them, at all.
  • Put on a Prison Bus: They are all arrested off-screen and according to Natalie are sentenced to hard labor in a mine, in addition to having their adventurer credentials permanently revoked, as their stint in mine-stealing was far from their first crime.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: The only thing they've got holding them together is a one-sided grudge against Grantz because they believe they're better than the weapons they chose to buy.
  • Turned Against Their Masters: On the receiving end. The thief beast tamer of the party is nearly killed by the Behemoth he tamed when it was an infant.

    Edgar Fromware

If you know what's good for you, commoner, you'll hand over those girls at once. I always get what I want. The only difference is in how much I have to hurt you first.

The son of the town lord and the first human antagonist. He is so arrogant and entitled that he just walks right up to Rein, holding hands with Sora and Runa, and demands the two girls become his women, even though the two look like human children. When Rein refuses, he sends the town knights after him, and when that fails, takes a couple of passing human women, mother, and daughter, hostage. And when that fails, swears murderous vengeance. Rein then has to free the town from his tyranny.

  • 0% Approval Rating: Outside of his royal guard and his father, everyone hates him and his corruption. His hostage situation during his first encounter with Rein shows that the feeling is mutual.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: Edgar makes a very poor impression of himself when he demands that Sora and Runa become his women. Their vehement and understandable rejection of his advances makes him more enticed to have the twins.
  • Cornered Rattlesnake: As his crimes and Rein catch up to him, he runs into his study and grabs the ring Arios, in disguise, provided. First, he sends an instant-death spell at Rein, and when that fails, he turns himself into a demon in an attempt to kill Rein, Tania, and Kanade when they catch up to him about to murder a mother and her child as he lays waste to his town. This changes in the Anime version, where he becomes an unwilling victim of the transformation as the ring envelops him whole.
  • Demon of Human Origin: Using the ring Arios gave him eventually turns Edgar into a demon.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • Every attempt of his trying to take out Rein and his tamed beasts winds up speeding up his downfall with each further attempt. Not helped by the party having the support of the town, who equally hate his guts.
    • His team-up with Arios in the anime starts similarly to the other versions, using the ring to his advantage against Rein and his party to end their threat. Where it differs is that it forcibly possesses and transforms him instead of being used willingly as a means to kill Rein.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He and his father briefly appear in Episode 2, with Arios and Aggath cozying up to them.
  • Entitled Bastard: Lampshaded, repeatedly. He proclaims as he's approaching Rein that he always gets what he wants when he wants it. He's not opposed to using violence and crimes to enforce it, and not caring who gets harmed in the process besides himself. It is heavily implied when Stella and her forces come to confront him that It Runs in the Family.
  • Faux Affably Evil: When he first confronts Rein, he acts cordial despite his attempts to abuse his power. After their first encounter, Edgar sets his sights on killing him to claim Sora and Runa for himself, even if it means the lives of his citizens are at risk at the hands of him or his guard.
  • For the Evulz: Most of what he does he does just because he feels entitled to do so. Even as a demon he kills people because he just loves the sound they make as they turn to ash and sees killing Rein, Tania, and Kanade in this state as nothing more than a challenge when they put a stop to his massacre.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: He has a penchant for grabbing and enslaving attractive women, by any means possible, and torturing them in his dungeon, throwing them away when he gets bored with them or they break. When he tries to grab Sora and Runa, he earns the wrath of Rein, Tania, and Kanade, and vows to kill them to get what he wants.
  • Hero Killer: Already wanting Rein's head on a platter for getting in his way, Arios provides Edgar all he needs to know about the boy's special power to tame Ultimate Species and a demonic ring that is capable of inflicting instant death on any target of his choice. When that fails, Edgar uses it to transform into a demon in a second attempt to kill Rein, Kanade, and Tania when they stop him from murdering his citizens. It ultimately fails as Rain, with help from Nina, manages to take control of his own monsters and kill him instead.
  • Hostage Situation: Edgar's modus operandi. If someone interferes with what he wants, he'll threaten bystanders or loved ones to force cooperation. In order to get Rein to hand over Sora and Runa, he holds his entire town hostage and threatens to kill them and Rein if the girls aren't handed over. Rein uses his magic to force Edgar to back down by setting his guards non-fatally aflame. He also captured Nina by threatening the people of her town.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: How he dies during his battle with Rein as a demon. After his creatures are forcibly turned against him, he is last seen impaled on a tower's spire as his body evaporates into oblivion.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: Because he had his knight captain in a hostage situation, evidence of his crimes was buried and with his father's name as a club, few were willing to go out of town for help. Then he made the mistake of making Rein and his party enemies, causing his little empire to collapse. Even when he tries to continue his revenge against Rein, it ends up in his death against his own summoned demons. In the light novels, Edgar instead survives his possession but has a limp for the rest of his life. To add more salt to the wound, he finds himself confronted by the vengeful men of the women he had kidnapped and gets beaten senselessly, to the point it's ambiguous he survived.
  • Never My Fault: As all his crimes are coming home to roost, he loudly shouts that he's done nothing wrong and it's not his fault Rein's coming after him. No, it's Rein's fault for defying him, and Rein's got to die! His father is no better, threatening to have Stella's head as he gets arrested for his part in Edgar's crimes.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: Figures the only way he can take Sora and Runa is if he kills Rein for disobeying his rule. It doesn't work and eventually leads to his own demise at Rein's hands.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Upon becoming a demon, his first instinct is to annihilate the town and people he abused and lorded over for shits and giggles. He only backs down when Rein and his party confront him in order to deal with them first.
  • One-Winged Angel: With nowhere to run, and arrest imminent, he grabs the cursed ring Arios provided and turns himself into a demon. This ultimately doesn't help and only serves to decay his already decreasing sanity further into a nearly mindless demon who attacks indiscriminately until Rein, Kanade and Tania confront him directly. In the anime, this happens to him involuntarily while he begs for it to stop the whole time.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: The manga adaptation makes it explicit that he violates the women he kidnaps and beats.
  • Revenge Myopia: He swears bloody vengeance on Rein for fighting off his corrupt knights after they tried to take Sora and Runa from him, in broad daylight, threatening to kill the townsfolk in the process. He refuses to believe Rein was defending himself from completely unprovoked aggression.
  • Royally Screwed Up: Edgar's sociopathic tendencies and abuse of power are thanks to his father, who not only pampered his son into being an Entitled Bastard but turns out to be just as bad himself as he condones all of Edgar's misdeeds, including drug rings and slavery thanks to careful coverups, with the implication that he took part in some of those atrocities as well when Stella takes him down.
  • Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: As the son and heir of the town lord, he loved to flaunt the kingdom's laws because who would dare arrest him, and with his town's knights protecting him, who could be powerful enough to try? Then he went and picked a fight with Rein and his tamed beasts...
  • Serial Rapist: The light novel and manga make it explicitly clear that he rapes the women he kidnaps along with all the other unspeakable acts he commits on them.
  • Skewed Priorities: The moment he transforms into his demon state, he initially puts off his grudge against Rein and his girls in order to commit a massacre against his town. He's roped back into killing them again when they prevent him from murdering his citizens.
  • Slavery Is a Special Kind of Evil: At some time in the past, he captured Nina of the demigod race and put a slave collar on her, by holding her people hostage. Since then, the poor girl's been in his castle dungeon undergoing horrific torture because she refused to let herself be his Sex Slave.
  • The Sociopath: He pings the entire checklist, especially the fact that he has a pathological need to be entertained by grabbing attractive women and taking them to his dungeon to torture for laughs, and when the consequences for his actions come for him, his father and his guards, he honestly can't understand why it's happening, genuinely believing he's done nothing wrong.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: In the manga, he is revealed to be alive, but in a coma, and no one is sure if he will recover.
  • Spoiled Brat: His father kept him content by just summarily giving him whatever he wanted, when he wanted it, and he grew up extremely entitled as a result.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Holds a woman hostage and threatens to kill her and the rest of his subjects if Rein doesn't hand over his "bounty", while his knights later encounter Rein and Kanade filing a complaint and nearly engage them with intent to harm them both, unaware that Kanade is an Ultimate Species who easily kicks their asses when they attack the guild center later on. He also abuses and browbeats Nina while she is under his rule, even kicking her repeatedly on the ground as she lies on the ground unable to get back up. When he transforms into a demon, he tries to kill his entire town including its women before Rein confronts him, thereby changing his priorities back over to killing him, Kanade and Tania first. As with most of his traits, he inherits it from his dad, as he openly threatens to execute Stella and her forces when confronted for both his and Edgar's wrongdoings.
  • Would Hurt a Child: When Nina lived in a village prior to becoming his slave, Edgar threatened the lives of several children should she refuse to go with him.

I had to do a lot of nasty things for that scum Edgar. It would be worth going to prison just to see that lout get his!

The captain of the knights when Rein Shroud visited the town of Horizon. Compelled by Edgar Fromware, he's done a lot of nastiness to the people. He's relieved when Edgar's little empire comes crashing down, even if he's being arrested for his part.

  • Adaptational Villainy: In the anime, there are no mitigating factors in his villainy. He happily covers up Edgar's crimes and is wholly complicit, doing criminal acts for bags of gold. His family is also not held hostage. To top it off, when Stella comes for him, he tries to demoralize and kill her, shouting "there's no such thing as justice!"
  • Anti-Villain: He's not a bad guy. He just had the bad luck to swear fealty to a crooked liege.
  • Forced into Evil: By his own knight's oath and by his family being held hostage, he did Edgar's dirty work and hated it.
  • Graceful Loser: In the end, he accepts responsibility for his role in Edgar's crimes and allows himself to be taken into custody.
  • Put on a Prison Bus: He's last seen being hauled away in chains, arrested for his complicity with his lord's crimes.
  • To Be Lawful or Good: Lawful. He obeyed both Edgar's orders and the kingdom's laws. He buried, not destroyed, the evidence of Edgar's wrongdoing and the corruption of the knights under Edgar's command. So when it came time to go after the depraved tyrant, he was all too happy to turn the evidence over to Rein and the kingdom so something could finally be done.
  • Took a Level in Cynic: In flashbacks, he used to be as idealistic as Stella, but in the novels and manga, that came to an end due to Edgar using his family as hostages, and in the anime, he traded his honor for gold.
  • Worth It: He proclaims it's okay going to prison himself as long as Edgar's Reign of Terror is over, with Edgar himself captured or killed, he doesn't care which.

Demon Lord's army

    Shadow Knight

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shadow_knight_anime.png

The first member of the Demon Lord's army that Rein encounters.

  • Achilles' Heel: He is immune to attack magic, but other spells still affect him, which is why he needed Sora to lower the "confuse your sense of direction" barrier in order to find the fairy village.
  • Anti-Magic: He's completely immune to magic attacks.
  • BFS: He wields a claymore that reaches his shoulders when stabbed into the ground.
  • Black Knight: He's cloaked in shadows, wears black-colored plate mail, and serves the Demon Lord's army.
  • Dark Is Evil: He's the shadow knight and serves the genocidal Demon Lord.
  • Evil Virtues: He's evil to the core, but he does have a firm sense of honor and fights fairly, even if he takes hostages.
  • I Have Your Wife: He holds Luna hostage to try and compel Sora to drop the barrier to the fairy village, with the ultimatum that if she refuses by dusk of the very day she tells Rein about it, Luna would be killed.
  • The Juggernaut: He's strong, fast, and very tough. It took Rein using [Boost] to power Kanade's impressive strength even more before he could be beaten.
  • Noble Demon: He may be a member of the Demon Lord's army and willing to take hostages, but he at least fights Rein and Kanade fairly, even telling them that magic won't bother him.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He has red eyes and he's so strong, he can generate tornadoes with just the power of his sword swing alone, and felled several large trees while trying to hit Rein and Kanade.
  • This Cannot Be!: When Kanade punches a hole through his stomach, all he can do is shout the phrase as he disintegrates.

  • Misanthrope Supreme: She's human, yet she willingly works with the Demon Lord to enslave humanity.
