Team 3/Team Anko

    Team 3 as a whole

Team 3

  • Can't Catch Up: Discussed. After Naruto masters his bijū-mode, Koharu and Homura talk to Hinata and Shikamaru, facing them with the reality that if they don't ramp up their training, Naruto is bound to leave them behind. Both resolve to keep up with him.
  • Fire, Water, Wind: Shikamaru and Anko have a fire-affinity, whereas Hinata has water and Naruto has wind.
  • Good-Guy Bar: Naruto quickly turns the other members of Team 3 into fellow regulars at Ichiraku's, to where he also drags everyone of his foreign friends visiting Konoha. After the timeskip, they also frequent the tea-shop owned by Naomi's parents.
  • Out of Focus: Sans Naruto, Team 3 is a bit sidelined during the first few chapters after the time-skip due to the focus shifting more onto Naruto's Genin-Team, albeit they still get their own mini-arcs in the meantime an go on to reclaim reclaiming more of the spotlight later on.
  • Rank Up: Anko is promoted to Jonin after the Sand-Sound-invasion, whereas her students follow her sometime during the time-skip.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Boisterous Bruiser Naruto and The Lad-ette Anko are the Red Oni, while the Shrinking Violet Hinata and the Brilliant, but Lazy Shikamaru are the Blue Oni.
  • Shipper on Deck: Given that all of them have some kind of Love Interest or Ship Tease, they all become this for each other.
  • Team Member in the Adaptation: One of the fic's main aspects.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Lad-ette Anko and her Ojou-like student Hinata .
  • True Companions: Naruto, Hinata, and Shikamaru were already close friends before they were put on Team 3. In fact, it's the friendship and teamwork they displayed while dealing with Mizuki that ultimately convinced the Sandaime Hokage to put them on the same team. After Anko becomes their sensei, the four of them develop a strong bond that keeps growing over time.
  • Two Guys and a Girl: Like all teams of the Konoha 12. Counting Anko, they form a Gender-Equal Ensemble.

    Naruto Uzumaki

Naruto Uzumaki

The main protagonist, in the original work as in this fanfic. The son of the Yondaime Hokage, Minato Namikaze and his wife, Kushina Uzumaki, godson of the Sannin Jiraiya and jinchūriki of the Kyubi. In this fic, he befriends Shikamaru Nara and Hinata Hyūga during his days at the academy, starting this fic's point of deviation.
  • Adaptational Badass: He becomes much more adapt at fūinjutsu, utilizing his natural affinity as an Uzumaki and uses a greater variety of elemental ninjutusu. Additionally, meeting another jinchūriki so early leads to him connecting with the Kyubi earlier than in canon. After unlocking the Ninetails-Chakra, he gains the power of Scorch Release.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: Per Anko's request, Ibiki trains him in strategy before the final round of the Chunin-exams, making him a Dumbass No More. Later on, the Kyubi also sometimes acts as a Mr. Exposition to him during fights of other events.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • He becomes close friends with Hinata and Shikamaru, which is the fic's Point of Divergence. The three of them form a team under Anko.
    • He forms a brother-like relationship with Han. Both of them use the Japanese honorifics for older and younger brother, respectively.
    • Him being an Magnetic Hero also plays a part in winning over Dosu, Tayuya, and Masakado. He even forms a family with the latter two.
    • He becomes Hanabi's Jonin-Sensei after the timeskip.
  • Almighty Janitor: Averted, unlike the original work. He is promoted to Chunin after reaching the final round of the exam and has been promoted to Jonin after the time-skip. It leads to him leading missions and becoming a Jonin-Sensei himself.
  • Battle Couple: With Hinata, after their Relationship Upgrade. Their first major fight is against Kakuzu, whom they defeat and kill.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: Does this during the final battle against Yagura/Tobi during the Kiri-Civil-War-Arc in order to free the former of the latter's control. And later again during the Shimagame-arc, when he fights his "inner darkness", personified by Menma Uzumaki.
  • The Big Guy: His role in Team 3 is that of the Team's "muscle", a close-range heavy-hitter, compared to the mid/long-range Shikamaru and the more versatile Hinata.
  • Blow You Away: Due to Anko's training, he relies more on his natural wind-affinity earlier in the story, with Wind Release: Great Breakthrough becoming one of his Signature Moves.
  • Chain Pain: After the time skip, he learns how to use his clan's Adamantine Sealing Chains.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: "Whiskers", curtesy of Anko.
  • Fantastic Racism: Against Iwa early on, although upon meeting Team Han, he drops it pretty quickly.
  • Flight: He develops Wind Style: Drift after seeing his Evil Doppelgänger fly during their Battle in the Center of the Mind.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Often voices this trope, it being a prominent theme of the fic.
Naruto: [during Kiba vs. Risho] Disgusting... even if he lost most of his clan, even if Kiba was also being an ass, that is no excuse for that. He looked like he was going to straight up kill him, and Kiba didn't do a damn thing! He wasn't the one who killed anyone in war. It's disgusting and pathetic!
  • Green-Eyed Epiphany: In Chapter 33, Roshi asks Naruto what would be his reaction if he learned that Roto likes Hinata. The Uzumaki panics and tries to come up with various reasons why these two can't like each other. Roshi then points out that if Naruto didn't like Hinata, he wouldn't be so jealous. This makes Naruto realize that he does like her as more than just a friend.
  • Improbable Age: While being a Jonin at age sixteen is not unheard of (although still impressive, despite some being much younger) becoming a Jonin-Sensei certainly is in canon. Albeit in the fic, Risho, Temari, Misora and Karin all become Jonin-Senseis at a similar age.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Towards Yugito's cat-puns.
  • Power Incontinence: A problem hampering him early on is his poor chakra-control. In combination with his massive chakra-pool, this leaves him outright unable to perform some low-ranking ninjutsu, such as the Clone Jutsu. Interestingly enough, good chakra-control is a prerequisite for fūinjutsu, so he seems to get better later on note .
  • Relationship Upgrade: He gets one with Hinata druing the Kiri Civil War Arc. And again after the Kumo Invasion arc, where he proposes to Hinata after returning to Konoha.
  • Shockingly Expensive Bill: For anyone who makes the mistake of treating him to ramen.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Many people actually pick up on how similar he looks to his father, albeit it is denied most of the time by people who know of his lineage.
  • Supreme Chef: He becomes one during the time-skip due to Teuchi and Ayame gifting him a cookbook for his birthday, starting his interest.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Ramen (especially miso-ramen) as per usual. The fic also Lampshades parallels towards his teammates, with Anko and dango and Hinata and cinnamon rolls.
  • Training from Hell: After being on the receiving end of one by Anko, he later subjects his own Genin team to one.
  • What's Up, King Dude?: Emphasized at the end of the Kumo-arc, where he calls all Kage by their names instead of titles, except Jiraya, who is "Ero-sennin" in his eyes.

    Hinata Hyūga

Hinata Hyūga

The meek eldest daughter of Hiashi Hyūga, thus heiress apparent to the clan. She becomes best friends with Naruto and Shikamaru during their Academy years, before being put into a team with him and Shikamaru.
  • Abdicate the Throne: She later relinquishes her position as Clan heiress to Neji.
  • Adaptational Badass: Besides her Gentle Fist, Anko trains her in archery, water-style ninjutsu and later passes on her summoning contract with the snake clan on her, resulting in her being trained in senjutsu.

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • She becomes a genin under Anko alongside Naruto and Shikamaru.
    • She gains a temporary mentor in Jinin Akebino during the Kiri Civil War Arc.
    • During the same Arc, she is forced into Teeth-Clenched Teamwork with Ao, who she blames for the cursed seal and the divisions within her clan due to him being in possession of a "stolen" Byakugan.
    • She also hates the Raikage for the Hyūga-Affair, where an "ambassador" from Kumo tried to kidnap her for her Byakugan, ultimately leading to the death of her uncle.
  • Adaptational Wimp: When it comes to eating ramen, where she holds the village record as "the Legendary Queen of Gluttony" in-canon, beating even Naruto and the Akemichis. While still a Big Eater here, she prefers cinnamon rolls and doesn't compare to Naruto when eating ramen.
  • …And That Little Girl Was Me: Pulls this on the Raikage during their match in Shimo.
Hinata: In case you forgot, I am Hyūga Hinata. I am the daughter of Hyūga Hiashi, the Clan Head thirteen years ago. I am the girl you had your ambassador try to kidnap. [...] I am the niece of the Hyūga who was sent to Kumo to be executed for my father defending my life. I am one of the few people who knows EXPLICITLY why our villages are currently not allies; it's because YOU DIDN'T CARE TO BE ALLIES! YOU ONLY FAKED IT SO YOU COULD TRY AND KIDNAP ME!
  • Ascended Extra: Due to being one of Naruto's teammates.
  • Battle Couple: With Naruto, after their Relationship Upgrade. Their first major fight is agianst [[spoiler:Kakuzu, whom they defeat and kill.

  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Is is one of Jiraiya's bodyguards during his meeting with the Raikage.
  • Character Development: Being close to Naruto and being successful earlier gives her much more self-confidence early on, resulting in her basically losing her stutter even before the chunin-exams.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: With Naruto.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Anko nicknames her "Stutters-chan".
  • Face Your Fears: He accepts acting as the Hokage's bodyguard while traveling to Kumo, proving to them that the Hyūga-Affair no longer makes her afraid of Kumo or the Raikage.
  • Hotter and Sexier: Downplayed, but her post-timeskip outfit accentuates her body shape more than her canon-outfit, showing her Character Development.
  • Making a Splash: Her natural affinity is water, as opposed to fire and thunder in canon. This actually leads her to develop her own style of the Gentle Fist, relying more on evasion and flexibility.
  • Mythology Gag: She defeats Kankurō by channelling her chakra into his strings, similarly to how Neji defeated Kidōmaru in-canon.
  • Onee-sama: Eventually becomes this to Hanabi.
  • Poisonous Person: Her Snake Sage Mode allows her to generate her own venom.
  • Precision F-Strike: Naruto talks her into one after she tells him about her hatred of the Raikage while Sitting on the Roof of her clan-compound.
    Hinata: FUCK THE RAIKAGE!
  • Relationship Upgrade: She gets one with Naruto during the Kiri Civil War Arc. And again after the Kumo Invasion arc, where Naruto proposes to her after returning to Konoha.
  • The Rest Shall Pass: Against Kankurō during the Sand-Sound-Invasion.
  • Spirited Young Lady: Due to her earlier Character Development, she grows into this role during the timeskip.
  • Square Race, Round Class: A lot of her early troubles with the Gentle Fist are the result of her water-affinity which predisposes her towards a more Fragile Speedster-like fighting style than the Mighty Glacier of the typical Gentle Fist. She eventually develops her own style, relying more on evasion and flexibility.
  • Super Mode: She's able to use Snake Sage Mode.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Girly Girl to her Sensei's Tomboy.

  • Adaptational Badass: While still being Awesome by Analysis, his reportoire greatly exceeds that of his canon couterpart: Anko teaches him more Fire-Ninjutsu and during the Kiri Civil War Arc, Jiraiya teaches him his Earth Release: Swamp of the Underworld. After studying under Tsunade during the time-skip he also can use Medical-Ninjutsu and inherits her summoning contract with the slug clan.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • While still being good friends, he doesn't interact nearly as much with Choji as per canon, and doesn't interact that mutch at all with Ino.
    • He never is as close to Asuma as he is in canon, instead having Anko as his Sensei.
    • His only interaction with Temari is their fight during the Sound/Sand invasion. Her role as his Love Interest is instead filled by Kurotsuchi.

    • During the timeskip, he is trained by Tsunade.
  • Ascended Extra: Like the rest of Team 3 (sans Naruto).

Shikamaru: Burn? Konoha? The Will of Fire will always live on. Try and burn the village and you'll ignite its fire even more.
  • Barrier Warrior: Besides mastering his clan's non-canon Shadow Protection Jutsu fairly early, he is taught the Ninja Art: Holy Barricade by Homura during the lead-up to the Kumo-Invasion.
  • Battle Couple: Alongside Kurotsuchi during her "Yama no Osu" against Suzumebachi. Later during the Kumo-Invasion, they take on Sasori and Deidara, killing the latter.
  • Combat Medic: Learns medical ninjutsu from Tsunade.
  • Demolitions Expert: The fic often lampshades his extensive use of explosive-tags.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Despite his natural fire-affinity, he learns two powerful Earth-Ninjutsus from two significant people: Jiraiya teaches him Earth Release: Swamp of the Underworld during the Kiri-Civil-War-Arc. And during the Iwa-Arc, his girlfriends father Kitsuchi teaches him Earth Style: Moblie Core.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: "Lazy-Ass", curtesy of Anko. It is also picked up by his Love Interest, Kurotsuchi, as an Insult of Endearment.

  • Long-Distance Relationship: Following his Relationship Upgrade with Kurotsuchi, he often expresses envy towards Naruto and Hinata for being able to see each other so often.
  • Mythology Gag: He "loses" his fight against Sasuke during the Chunin exams in a similar fashion like his canon fight against Temari.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Him being on the receving end of one whilst killing Karitoriki triggers a phase of Heroic BSoD for him. Naruto getting Kurotsuchi to write him a letter snaps him out of it.

    Anko Mitarashi

Anko Mitarashi

The former apprentice of Orochimaru and originally a Tokubetsu Jōnin working in Konohas Torture & Interrogation Department, she is made Jōnin-Sensei of Team 3.
  • Adaptational Badass: She devises a special Battle Aura greatly enhancing her Fire-Ninjutsu and later gets the Shibuki after killing its previous wielder Jinpachi. She also gets tutored in senjutsu by the snake sage. Some even rank her as Konoha's greatest non-Uchia fire-user ever.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • She starts out as Kurenai's best friend, something never stated in canon.
    • She becomes the Jonin-Sensei for Naruto, Hinata and Shikamaru.
    • She also becomes rather close with Dosu, after he joins her Team as a temporal replacement for Naruto and later the T&I division.
    • She fights alongside Zabuza during the Kiri Civil War and later becomes one of his Seven Swordsmen. They also maybe sleep with each other after the victory celebration, become drinking buddies and have some Ship Tease together.
  • Ascended Extra: Due to taking Kakashi's canon-role as Naruto's sensei, she plays an important part in the story.
  • Badass Teacher: Anko is very protective of her students. Upon learning that they've been attacked by Orochimaru during the Chūnin Exams, she has a killing intent so intense it scares both Naruto and Hinata.
Anko: [thinking] I'm going to kill him...I'M GOING TO FUCKING KILL HIM! Come at me all you want...try and make my life worse...but don't you DARE go after my students! You will regret this you piece of shit traitor! YOU WILL FUCKING-
    • When Anko is fighting Orochimaru, the latter is surprised to see her have this much fury and asks her if he did anything recently to make her mad. The fact he personally tried to hurt her students in the Forest of Death is one of the reasons she mentions to explain her fury.
    • She's also not pleased at all when she learns of Mei's decision to have Naruto go against Yagura. She threatens Mei by saying she will murder her if Naruto dies because of that decision.
  • Battle Aura: During her training with Kakshi, she develops her Flare Aura, which causes her to be Wreathed in Flames and greatly enhances her fire-ninjutsu.
  • Cool Big Sis: How she acts towards her students during their free time.
  • Don't Call Me "Sir": After her Genin are promoted, she tells them to stop calling her "Anko-sensei." None of them does. A variation is Dosu, who calls her "taichou" ("Captain"), due to never having been her student.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: She drinks heavily after being incapacited during her Teams fight against Nasumareta during the Han-Arc. Kurenai also takes her out drinking after Orochimaru attacks her Genin during the Chunin-exams. After he gets his own Geinin Team, she tells Naruto that after being named a Sensei, she went to a bar near her apartment and drank to the point of nearly passing out.
  • Female Misogynist: Downplayed Type 1: During the Chunin exams she complains about "fangirls" like Sakura or Ino ruining the image of "real" kunoichi.

  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: Much to Hinata's dismay.
  • The Nicknamer: Gives each one of her Students an Embarrassing Nickname: "Whiskers" to Naruto, "Stutters-chan" to Hinata and "Lazy Ass" to Shikamaru.
  • Penny Among Diamonds: She is the only member of Team 3 who isn't a scion of a prominent clan.
  • Poisonous Person: Subverted during her Senjutsu-training, where Hinata proves more adept at poison-techniques, leading Anko to focus more on enhancing her Fire-Ninjutsu.
  • Playing with Fire: She uses a far greater variety of Fire-Ninjutsu, being ranked by some as the "best non-Uchia fire-user Konoha has ever produced.“
  • Red Baron: After getting the Shibuki, she becomes known as "Anko of the Blast Sword". Even later, she becomes known as "Konoha's walking Firestorm".
  • Sadist Teacher: Befitting a member of the T&I Department.
  • Ship Tease: With Zabuza. Besides their Did They or Didn't They? after the Kiri Civil War, she also gives him a You Are Better Than You Think You Are-talk during their hunt for Raiga. Dosu picks up on it, leading to her students becoming Shippers on Deck.
  • Super Mode: Unlike canon, she learns how to use Snake Sage Mode.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Tomboy towards her best friend Kurenai's and her student Hinata's Girly Girl.
  • Training from Hell: She trains her students harshly. Deconstructed when she briefly takes it up a notch to cope with the almost-desaster of Teams 3's first C-Rank mission.

Team 7/Team Kakashi

Kakashi Hatake

The "copy ninja", the seemingly last surving student of the Yondaime Hokage, bearer of a Sharingan and one of Konohas most elite Jonin.

    Sasuke Uchiha

Sasuke Uchiha

The Sole Survivor of his clan's massacre at the hand of his older brother Itachi. A progidy with ninjutsu and an unwanted heartthrob.
  • Adaptational Hairstyle Change: He changes his canon hair to bangs shortly after timeskip, when a little girl, namely Setsuko Uzumaki, tells him that his haircut looks like "a duck's butt."
  • Adaptational Heroism: He never pulls his Face–Heel Turn after being infected with the cursed seal and remains loyal to Konoha troughout the story. It helps that Orochimaru dies during the Invasion and he doesn't get mind raped by Itachi for a second time and thus has no real push.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • With Kiba in his team instead of Naruto, he never becomes as close to him as in canon. They slip more into a Friendly Rivalry. He even finds some comforting words after he finds out that Naruo is a jinchūriki.
    • Team Taka is never formed: Sasuke himself remains loyal to Konoha, while Orochimaru's early death also leads to Karin staying in Kusa and Suigetsu fighting for Mei in the Kiri Civil War. Jugo is left unaccounted for.
    • Itachi reveals the truth about the massacre earlier, causing them to mend their relationship with both of them alive.
  • A Day in the Limelight: He gets more focus during the ROOT-arc, where he fights Danzō alongside Hiruzen.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Is is one of Jiraiya's bodyguards during his meeting with the Raikage.
  • Demoted to Extra: Like the rest of Naruto's canon teammates.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Averted. Unlike his canon counterpart, he never takes up kenjutsu.
  • Loophole Abuse: His presence during the council meeting of Danzō's arrest is justified by Jiraya with him technically being the head of the Uchiha-Clan.
  • Mythology Gag: During his fight with the resurrected Orochimaru during the Kumo-Invasion, he remarks that he might have joined him, "in another world."
  • Ship Tease: When Tayuya hugs him after visiting Itachi's grave, he notes that her arms are "strong, but soft" and that the hug "feels nice".

    Sakura Haruno

Sakura Haruno

A civilian born shinobi and Naruto's crush during his time at the academy. Like in canon, she gets put into Team Seven.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:

    • She never becomes Tsunade's apprentice, a role taken by Shikamaru instead.
    • After the time-skip, she also stops showing interest in Sasuke.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Instead of being a Combat Medic, she becomes proficient in genjutsu and learns how to use fūinjutsu during the timeskip. She actually still has her Super-Strength as part of a fūinjutsu-based Stance System.
  • Can't Catch Up: Both she and Kiba (to a lesser extent) voice this to Naruto after learning that he supposedly killed the Mizukage.
  • Demoted to Extra: Like the rest of Team Seven (sans Kiba).
  • Stance System: After the timeskip, she uses a fūinjutsu-seal to switch between Super-Strength and Super-Toughness.

  • Can't Catch Up: Voices this similarly like Sakura to Naruto.
  • Dead Guy Junior: He was named for his Uncle, who died fighting Iwa during the Third Shinobi War.
  • Fantastic Racism: Against Iwa for killing a huge amount of members of his clan, among them his uncle.
  • Foil: To Rishio Kurogane from Iwa, his opponent during the chunin exams. Both lost a huge amout of clan members during the Thrid Shinobi World War and hate the other's village for it.

Team 10/Team Asuma

Shino Aburame

The heir of the Aburame Clan, known for stoicism and fighting with symbiotic bugs. He takes Shikamaru's place on Team 10.

    Chōji Akimichi

Chōji Akimichi

The heir of Clan Akimichi and Shikamarus Childhood Friend. As per canon, he becomes a member of Team 10 alongside Ino under Asuma, albeit with Shino instead of Shikamaru.

    Ino Yamanaka

Ino Yamanaka

The heiress of Clan Yamanaka and a member of Team 10 under Asuma alongside Chōji and Shino.

    Asuma Sarutobi

Asuma Sarutobi

The son of the Sandaime Hokage, Kurenais boyfriend and eventual husband and Jonin-Sensei of Team 10.

Team Gai

    Neji Hyūga

Neji Hyūga

Hinata's rather aloof cousin who blames her for his father's death in the Hyūga-affair. He mellows out after losing to Hinata during the Chunin-exams, upon Hiashi telling him the truth about his father's passing. After the timeskip, he openly supports Hiashi's reforms and is even named clan-heir.
  • Foil: To Hosshin Yotsuki, who's father was killed by Hiashi during his attempt at kidnapping Hinata. He too grew up orphaned due to losing his father in the Hyūga-affair, albeit to the opposite site. And while Hosshin grew up to be volatile and thirsty for revenge Neji grew into a Fatalist. Neji himself uses their shared Suffering to actually diffuse the tension of their meeting.
  • Heir to the Dojo: Hinata willingly steps down from her position as heiress so that he can be made heir.
  • Hidden Depths: He actually proves to be rather adept at diplomacy during his dealings with the Yotsuki-clan.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After losing to Hinata during the Chunin-Exams, Hiashi tells him the truth about his father's death in the Hyuha-Incident, leading to him warming up to Hinata.

    Rock Lee

Rock Lee

A passionate Konoha-nin who can't use nin- or genjutsu, although that doesn't really hamper him. He is also a massive Hero-Worshipper of "Gai-sensei". Lee fights in the Chunin-Exams where he is beaten by Sasuke. After the time-skip he accompanies Team 9 to Suna.
  • Hidden Depths: The rather goofy Lee actually gives some very sound advice to Naruto's student Kanji during their journey to Suna.
Lee: But I was only able to accomplish this because of my past. I recall the things that my peers all told me and used that to push me forward. [...] [R]eevaluate your past. Look at those events and use it as motivation to defy that conclusion. Prove to yourself that you can be better than you ever dreamed possible!

    Tenten

Tenten

A kunoichi with a penchant for weapons and tools. She fights Naruto in the Chunin-exams and loses to him. After the time-skip, she accompanies Team 9 to Suna.
  • Birds of a Feather: She hits it off really well with Naruto's student Katsumi, as a fellow Action Girl with a penchant for weapons.
  • Mythology Gag: Naruto beats her with wind-ninjutusu during their fight in the Chunin-exams, similarly to Temari in canon.

    Might Guy

Might Guy

A Konoha Jonin and Kakashi's self-proclaimed rival. He is one of Konoha's most powerful Shinobi, albeit rather goofy.
  • Demoted to Extra: While never really prominent in canon, he had some major fights, like against Kisame of Madara. In the fic, he is noticialby less prominent.
  • So Proud of You: He is one of the spectators during Hinata and Neji's match against their Grandfather and Sai, and proudly weeps his Manly Tears after their victory.

Other Mentor-Figures to Team 3

    Shikaku and Yoshino Nara

Shikaku and Yoshino Nara

Shikamarus parents. Shikaku is the head of Clan Nara and Konohas Jonin-Commader, making him the Hokage's official Number Two. He is also a Henpecked Husband to his wife. The both start training their son's friends Naruto and Hinata during their academy years.
  • Adaptation Expansion: Yoshino recounts how she fought as a Chunin in the Third Shinobi World War, losing her teammates and many more in the process.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Shikaku is the one to teach Naruto the Shadow Clone Jutsu, after realsizing that he has simply too much chakra for a normal clone jutsu to work.
    • He also continues to tutor his son in their family shadow jutsus and replaces Asuma as Shikamaru's main shogi opponent.
    • Yoshino is later revealed to have studied under Tsunade, setting her up to be Shikamaru's mentor.
  • Alcoholic Parent: Shikaku is basically drinking sake everytime he appears. It is lampshaded to be his way of coping with the stress of his position.
  • Back for the Dead: After being relegated to the background for a few Arcs, Shikaku returns for the Kumo-Arc, during which he dies at the hand of Hidan.
  • Hypocrite: Yoshino often chews out her husband for his drinking, but still is a massive Hero-Worshipper of Tsunade, who is just as bad.
Shikamaru returned, holding a bottle of sake of his own. Yoshino let go of her husband and frowned at the sight of her son. "I thought you weren't much of a drinker. When did you pick that habit up?" She questioned, her eyes narrowed slightly on him."It's not for me." Shikamaru answered with a shrug. "I'm giving it to Tsunade-sensei. She'll be at the exhibition, watching the thing." "Oh." Yoshino's demeanor softened immediately. A smile then developed on her face. "Tell her 'hi' for me then!"
  • Killed Off for Real: Shikaku dies during Akatsuki's invasion of Kumo.

  • The Chains of Commanding: After Neji's and Hinata's fight during the Chunin exams, he gradually starts seeing the error of the Hyūga's ways, but is hampered by the elders.
  • Crippling Overspecialisation: His reliance on the gentle Fist and his Byakugan actually means that he struggles a lot against opponents who can blind him, sucha s the ressurrected Kashikoi Yotsuki
  • Mythology Gag: When the Hokage announces the Genin-Team compositions, he notes that Hinata would do better on a Sensor/Tracking-Team, alongside animal-shinobi such as an Inuzuka or an Aburame.

While not becoming Hokage herself, she becomes head of the medical academy and tutors Shikamaru.

  • Achilles in His Tent: Invoked during the discussion on wether she of Jiraya should replace Hiruzen as Hokage. Due to her time away from the Village and not returning during its crisis, people may refuse to accept her as Hokage.
  • Adaptational Job Change: With Jiraya becoming Hokage, she instead takes over as head of the medical academy.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: She teaches Shikamaru instead of Sakura. She also taught his mother.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Downplayed. She never has her big Face Your Fears-moment when it comes to her hemophobia. While largely overcoming it through her medical work, it flares up again during her fight against the Nue.
  • Demoted to Extra: Due to never becoming Hokage and her training of Shikamaru happening during the timeskip she isn't featured as prominently as she is in canon.

  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Instead of pulling a Heroic Sacrifice during the Sound-Sand-Invasion, he pulls it during the root arc.
  • The Man Behind the Man: Discussed. Some speculate that he picked the younger Minato to suceed him over more expirienced canidates like Jiraiya or even Fugaku Uchiha so he could continue to pull the strings in the background.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: The fic emphasizes the mistakes he caused with his mercifulness, because he is alive when their consequences hit. Him sparing Orochimaru leads directly to the Sound-Sand-Invasion, whereas his inaction against Danzo results in the Uchiha-massacre, nearly ends Konoha's budding alliance with Kumo and indirectly causes Onoki's death, almost resulting in a war with Iwa.

  • Shock and Awe: Koharu fights by channeling Thunder-Ninjutsu into her kusarigama.
