  • Fragile Speedster: His second skill, "Winter Plum", allows him a 75% chance to increase his own Dodge for 1 round when attacked, meaning that he has a high chance to dodge attacks that would take him down otherwise.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: He has blonde hair to match his outfit, and is a perfectly courteous and humble gentleman.
  • Humble Hero: Even though many years have passed since his mentor’s death, Yangzhou Rice still thinks of himself as a student to Yi Bingshou and behaves very humbly, downplaying his own talents and constantly saying that he isn’t worthy when given gifts.
  • Nobody Touches the Hair: One of his voice lines warns the young master against fiddling with his hair because he will be annoyed by that, though downplayed since the way he says it seems quite lighthearted and considering his personality, it’s unlikely that he will throw a tantrum.
  • Non-Idle Rich: He was the student of Yi Bingshou, the governor of Yangzhou, and a favorite dish of Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty, which means he is quite privileged as both a mortal and a Food Spirit. However, he never shies away from working and regularly expresses that he doesn’t want to be seen as a pampered and sheltered nobleman. In the past, he also followed his mentor to deal with problems around the country, during which he learned a lot of practical skills like farming or sailing, and also experienced firsthand the impact of natural disasters on the common folks.
"My hands are rougher than you expected? I’m not a rich lord who has all his needs met."
  • Petal Power: His third skill, "Plum Moon", is just him throwing a bunch of plum blossom petals into the enemies’ face.
  • Princely Young Man: The Gentleman type. Befitting his privileged background, Yangzhou Rice is well-learned and cultured, and always reminds himself to act in ways expected of a noble gentleman.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Considering all the personality traits listed on this page, his nationality is the only factor preventing him from being a full-blown Yamato Nadeshiko.
  • Warrior Poet: He cites poems in his voice lines quite often.

Cuisine: Cantonese (粤)
Class: Heal
Other Names:
Voiced by: Zhao Shuang (CN), Ayumu Murase (JP)

First made in the early 20th century in a family teahouse in Wu village on the outskirts of Guangzhou. A little boy who wears a pink skirt and sings sweetly. His little heart is full of secrets and dreams.

  • Becoming the Mask: He started wearing dresses to comfort an ailing father grieving his missing daughter, Xia Jiao. He also learned how to sing after learning Xia Jiao loved to sing, shaping him into the idol singer he is today.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: You would be forgiven if his appearance fooled you, as Honey Char-siu understandably also mistakes him for a woman in their first meeting and asks him if he were his new "mommy".
  • Idol Singer: He is an actual idol in Kongsang and has all the aesthetics of the tropes, including looking like a cute young girl. Chapter 3 also follows how everyone tries to organize a concert for him as a return for destroying his teahouse.
  • Musical Assassin: He fights with a microphone and his singing voice.
  • Pink Is Feminine: While the cast has a lot of androgynous food spirits, Har-gow is the only one who actually crossdresses, and the pink hair adds in to his feminine charm.
  • Saying Too Much: He accidentally tells his father that the teahouse was burned down as they talk some days before the concert, which caused the father to snap in anger and in turn reveal that he already knew Har-gow was impersonating his daughter.
  • Stepford Smiler: Behind his cheeriness hides a sad fact that all this time, he was living as Xia Jiao and not himself just to repay the ailing teahouse owner who took him in.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: He dresses and acts like a girl because he was impersonating the missing daughter of his "father" so that the man could spend his last days not grieving over her. Though since he stays that way into the present day even when he doesn’t need to, it seems that he does enjoy it and no one minds it either.
Preference: "A cute boy wearing a cute skirt, what's wrong with that?"

When peach blossoms, the mandarin fish is at the plumpest state

Cuisine: Anhui (徽)
Class: Sunder
Other Names:
Voiced by: Li Xin (CN), Maaya Uchida (JP), Lee Eun-jo (KR)

An Anhui Cuisine. Originated from a method of preserving Stinky Perch during transport centuries ago, when people smothered the fish in salt water. A shy and timid child who constantly worries that that others won't like him because of his odor. Often shields himself from the distaste with a red paper parasol.

  • Blush Sticker: Has them on his cheeks, which seems to represent his constant state of bashfulness.
  • Cowardly Lion: Despite being scared, he also tells himself to stay in the battle.
  • Cute Oversized Sleeves: His sleeves are half of his body length and cover his entire arms, making him seem smaller and cuter.
  • Freakiness Shame: He's ashamed of being a smelly dish, and thinks no one wants to eat his dish. The young master tries to convince him otherwise, by cooking stinky perch for several people to show how much people enjoy it in spite of the acquired smell.
  • Signature Scent: His body has a strong fishy smell due to him being a salted fish dish, which affects his self-esteem badly.
  • Shrinking Violet: He's afraid of people thinking they don't like his scent, and is also rather cowardly in combat.

    Harbin Fried Pork

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/07753982_b851_4109_b20c_090e0b508932.png
A respectful and humble diplomat, a cunning and cheeky butler

Cuisine: Northeast (东北)
Class: 100% Hit
Other Names: Butler Guo
Voiced by: Qingbo de Jiaxiang (CN), Daisuke Ono (JP), Andre Faris (EN)

A Northeast China Cuisine derived from Braised Jerky, a celebrated Manchu cuisine. During the reign of Emperor Guangxu in Qing Dynasty, official chef Zheng Xingwen optimized the recipe and served it to welcome foreign guests—especially for visitors from Russia. A humble and polite gentleman, at least on the surface.

  • Actor Allusion: Voiced by Daisuke Ono, handsome, dark-haired, Servile Snarker, Battle Butler. One hell of a butler indeed.
  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: While it’s difficult for him to get drunk, when he does, he starts dancing and singing wildly and forces everyone to call him "Uncle Guo" instead of "Butler Guo". He’s so embarrassed about this that he will go destroying any evidence of his drunken moments as soon as he’s sober.
  • Battle Butler: He calls himself a butler constantly and served as one in Kongsang before Taotie attacked, and 7 chapters later he returns to this role. He’s also a powerful archer.
  • Crutch Character: As the first SR character and an AoE damage dealer in the team, he’s going to carry the player for a good part of their starter contents, but can be easily outshined by other SSR characters who can serve the same role but hit harder or inflict more lasting debuffs. Downplayed in that he can still be useful when the player needs an extra AoE damage dealer who can reduce DEF to assist the main one in the team.
  • The Dreaded: The residents of Kongsang, especially the young master, are quite alarmed by his strict discipline and Training from Hell. He’s even nicknamed the "Evil Spirit of Kongsang", just to show how feared he is.
  • Drunken Glow: His sprite in the interlude "Drunk Not Drunk" uncharacteristically has a blush on it to indicate that he’s drunk. Subverted as he turns out to be still quite sober.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: He’s the second character the player gets by default after Hu-Geng, but unlike Hu-Geng who stays by the young master’s side since the start of the main story, Harbin Fried Pork only makes his first appearance in the epilogue of Chapter 7, after the young master has gathered a large number of Food Spirits back to Kongsang.
  • Gratuitous Russian: Being a dish originally made for Russian diners, he sometimes does this.
  • Perpetual Smiler: He rarely ever loses his smile, even when he’s pissed off or threatening someone. The only indication is that his face is shaded.
  • Playing Drunk: In one of his interludes, the young master finds him asleep on the bench reeking of alcohol, seemingly dead drunk after a drinking contest, and takes the opportunity to doodle on his face. Then he immediately wakes up and catches them red-handed, still sober as ever, and it turns out that he’s simply taking a short nap.
  • Servile Snarker: Although he’s usually polite, some of his voice lines are very snarky and he will off-handedly complain about how the young master is or isn’t causing trouble for him to clean up. Of course, he remains a dignified butler through it.
"If I were to have another hand, I would then be able to meet your expectations."
"You’re overpraising me, I really am not that impressive — except for the fact that I can stop you."
  • Skewed Priorities: His Request Aid and Defeat voice lines show that he somehow finds being untidy worse than getting injured, and is adamant on having a change of clothes instead of medical attention.
  • Starter Mon: He’s the first SR unit the player gets for free after the Summon tutorial.
  • Training from Hell: He has and will hang the young master under the waterfall if they fail his test or can’t answer his questions for them.
  • Vodka Drunkenski: His Ultimate is hilariously named "Drunken Flame", where he will take a sip of the bottle before using it as some sort of upgraded Molotov Cocktail by shooting into it. He even complains that it was an alcohol he intended to drink beforehand. His Preference voice line and an interlude reveal that he has alcohol in his cabinet, and he will almost offer the player vodka during Evening Check-in. Definitely no coincidence for a dish with relation to the Russians.

    Squirrel Fish

Cuisine: Jiangsu (苏)

The dish's history dates back to Spring and Autumn Period when Zhuan Zhu assassinated Wang Liao with a dagger hidden in fish. The disciple and assistant of Zhuan Zhu, he sees himself as the master's secret guard and offers his absolute loyalty.

  • Code Name: He had the code name "Nameless" as an assassin.

  • Friend to All Living Things: Small animals are attracted to him, which quite troubles him since he’s supposedly dangerous.
  • Highly-Visible Ninja: Supposedly a very skillful assassin, but wears conspicuous, brightly colored clothes.
  • Hitman with a Heart: While he constantly suppresses his emotions in order to be an effective assassin, there’re many times he shows himself to the young master as a polite, loyal, somewhat self-depreciative man who cherishes the feeling of "like" itself and doesn’t think the master will like him because of his profession.
  • Interface Spoiler: His face is meant to be revealed when he’s ascended to five Petals, but the player can totally view it beforehand through the Outfit preview section.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: In his second letter, he will all but admit that he does like cat, though he tries to deny it since he shouldn’t have such a "weakness" as an assassin. His favorite gift is also a felt doll in the shape of a cat.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: His mentor Zhuan Zhu died in front of him, which fuels his determination to protect what he’s having in the present at all cost.
  • McNinja: He's a ninja in all but name: always wears a mask and is a highly loyal, deadly assassin.
  • Professional Killer: In the past, he followed in the footsteps of his master Zhuan Zhu to become a seasoned assassin. Some of his voice lines are appropriately ominous, talking about the smell of bodies or how his purpose is to kill, for example.
"Whose head do you want today?"
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He enjoys sewing and is a member of the Crafts club.
  • Undying Loyalty: He’s described as unfailingly loyal to the young master and will do anything they ask of him without a single question.
  • Worth Living For: Squirrel Fish is a resolute assassin who won’t think twice about suffering or dying for the sake of the mission, and fully expects a karmic, unpeaceful death for himself after years of killing. However, when his Affection level is raised to max, he will admit that more than sacrificing himself for the young master at the drop of a hat, he now wants to actively live on and stay by their side.

    Fuli Chicken

Cuisine: Anhui (徽)
Class: Dispel
Other Names: Ah-Fú
Voiced by: Xing Chao (CN), Atsushi Abe (JP), Ty Coker (EN)

The younger brother of Dezhou Chicken. While he's a railway policeman like his brother, their personalities are miles apart. A carefree and easy-going young man, an untameable soul that dislikes restraints, maybe he does have a soft side deep down.

  • Always Someone Better: He deeply resents being stuck in Dehzou's shadow, fueling the conflict in Chapter 2.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Despite being so abrasive, he looks up to his brother Dézhōu. He'll never truly admit it though.
  • Improvised Scattershot: Homerun Shot, which is AoE. The improvisation is taken to ridiculous levels as it starts with a misfire, then the bullet comes spiraling down into the ground before Fuli Chicken bats it like a baseball with his gun.
  • Tsundere: Even more so than his brother, to the point of seeming stereotypical.

    Dongpo Pork

  • Anti-Debuff: His passive skill "Guest Libations" has an 80% chance to purify every ally of 1 debuff before each round, making him a strong counter to characters whose gameplay relies greatly on debuff like Sichuan Hotpot.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": He absolutely adores his creator Su Dongpo and prizes his works above all. In fact, although he is not actually not that learned, he knows every poem written by Su Dongpo.
  • Life of the Party: He leads a carefree life where eating, drinking and having fun is all that matters. Aside from brewing wine, he also loves drinking with friends and frequently hosts lavish banquets that lasted all night in the mortal world.

    West Lake Fish

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/6c855767_d878_4834_81d0_c70fd6c3af0b.png
A nameless swordsman whose whereabouts cannot be traced

Cuisine: Anhui (徽)
Class: Sunder
Other Names:
Voiced by: Liu Cong (CN), Kazuya Nakai (JP), Hong Hoo-baek (KR)

A Zhejiang Cuisine said to have originated from the legend "A Delicacy for the Brother-in-Law". A nameless hero who wanders around, upholding justice for the wronged has become his life's sole pursuit. Considers himself experienced in worldly matters, yet he is a complete novice at matters between men and women.

  • Cannot Talk to Women: He gets terribly flustered around women and outright faints when he meets Xin'yan again in Kongsang. The only woman he can acts remotely normal with is Madam Song, his creator. His favorite gift, hilariously, is the Basic Dating Guide.
  • Oral Fixation: He always has a straw in his mouth.
  • Rōnin: He resembles this archetype, being a rugged wandering Iaijutsu Practitioner.

Class: Support
Other Names: Ding Ji
Voiced by: Wai Wai (CN), Takuya Sato (JP), Kim Jin-hong (KR)

A Sichuan dish created by Ding Baozhen, a governor of Shadong and the general of Sichuan in the Qing dynasty. A well-mannered and upright young man. He used to work as an official, but has since distanced himself from the imperial court. Nevertheless, he still retained some habits from the past.

  • Berserk Button: Right in his Encounter voice line, he mentions that he cannot tolerate people misnaming him to "Ka-pow Chicken". This is a Chinese wordplay, wherein 保 (bǎo) in 宫保 (Kung Pao) means "protect" while 爆 (bào) in 宫爆 (Ka-pow) means "violence".
  • Braids of Action
  • Comically Missing the Point: He believes the young master order him not to work when he catches a cold because they don’t want him to spread the illness to others, so he decides to wear a mask and work at night when everyone has gone to sleep to avoid that. The young master, who simply wants him to take a rest, is very much bewildered by this.
  • Humble Hero: Even though he’s awarded by Kongsang for his contributions, he doesn’t think of himself as commendable as Harbin Fried Pork or Dezhou Chicken since he’s just doing what he’s assigned. When given gifts, he will also state that he isn’t worthy of it.
  • It Was a Gift: The short sword he wore was a friend's gift before he resigned, so he always has it by his side.

    "Working makes me happy."

Voiced by: Chen Zhang Taikang (CN), Yūya Hirose (JP), Jung Uhan (KR)

A Hunan Cuisine representative of the region. He was born with head separated from body and therefore has to cover it with a scarf. However, this "abnormality" always gets revealed when he fails to keep his temper in check.

  • Ax-Crazy: Not normally, but in his Ultimate when his scarf is removed, he has a Slasher Smile on his face and screams "I will chop your head off" in an enthusiastic and deranged manner as he approaches the enemy.
  • Ear Fins: He has fins instead of ears, perhaps due to being a fish dish.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Despite how he looks, he’s actually just as hotheaded as Mapo Tofu and the two frequently get into arguments. He’s actively learning to control his temper, but so far it isn’t very effective.
  • Instant Kill: When he activates his Ultimate, "Fury Blade", targets with less than 15% HP will be defeated immediately unless they have the buff Unyielding.
  • Losing Your Head: He was born with his head already separated from his body. Since he’s a food spirit, he can function just fine, but the sight can be unsettling to look at so he always hides the detachment with his scarf. The closest we get to seeing it is in his Ultimate with a chibi, completely shadowed sprite.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: His scarlet scarf is his trademark feature. It can be turned into a spear, as seen during his Ultimate.

Solitary life eventually wore him down, seeking to end his life entirely. Being a spirit, however, he's pinned down by the stalwart memory of Jie Zitui and continues to exist.

  • Animal Motifs: He has large swallow wings, and his hair and clothes are styled to resemble the tail of a swallow.

  • Blow You Away: He can create gusts of wind strong enough to literally blow people away by flapping his wings.
  • Cast from Hit Points: Two out of his three skills will hurt him for 5% of his HP if he's above 50%, allowing him to use his special skill's secondary effect sooner.
  • Critical Status Buff: If he activates his third skill when having less than 50% HP, he becomes Invincible for 1 round.
  • Death Seeker: Never shuts up about how he wants to perish forever…which is rather hard for food spirits.
  • Draw Aggro: His special skill is based on his suicidal personality i.e. it makes the entire opposite team lose control and only attack him for the next turn. Ironically, if he's below 50%, he becomes invincible for the turn.
  • The Eeyore: He's almost always gloomy and sad.
  • Freakiness Shame: His wings make it difficult for him to blend in with humans or hide away from them, so he comes to detest them. That, and the fact that he finds them annoying to clean up.
  • God Guise: At Longjing Shrimp’s request, he plays the role of the God of Spring to resolve the mess Peach Petal Congee caused during the Spring Nimbus event, which he does quite convincingly thanks to having actual wings just like what the people imagine the "god" to have.
  • A God I Am Not: He doesn't like that Lóngjǐng puts him on a pedestal and requests to be treated as just a friend.
  • Hopeless with Tech: Due to having spent hundreds of years in seclusion, he is slow to catch up with technology and describes a camera as a box that makes strange noises. In one of his interludes, he gets upset when seeing the swallows on the TV, thinking the young master caged the birds in a metal "box" since he doesn’t know what a TV even is.
  • Only Friend: He is very solitary, and Lóngjǐng Shrimp is the only person he considers a friend.
  • Nature Lover: Plant is pretty much the only thing in life he has an attachment to, and he finds joy in taking care of them and being around trees and forests. Swallows also have a soft spot in his heart.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Since he’s The Eeyore, his expression is always a gloomy apathy.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He gives one to Lóngjǐng, citing the latter's stubborn clinging to the past and worshipping him because of it.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Swallow Bun always carries a blood-stained handkerchief with a poem by Jie Zitui, whom he was created in memorial of.
  • Winged Humanoid: Being based on a bird-shaped pastry, he has large feathered wings.

A Hangzhou beverage made with osmanthus and rice, said to be the god of the moon descended from above due to his ethereal beauty. He took up the role as Guanghan Palace's deity, and spares no expense asserting his status.

  • Agent Peacock: Despite being effeminate and beauty-conscious, he's no wimp.
  • Distracted by My Own Sexy: Part of his animation cycles: he regularly pulls out a mirror from his sleeve to admire himself as he speaks.
  • Flower Motifs: He is a drink made with sweet osmanthus blossoms, as such he wears osmanthus branches in his hair and summons whole osmanthus trees in battle.
  • God of the Moon: The sweet osmanthus tree is associated with the moon. Thus, he has lived on the moon and deliberately calls himself Cháng'é - the Chinese goddess of the Moon - in his first story appearance.
  • Green Thumb: He can manipulate osmanthus branches to attack and restrain people.
  • Intoxication Mechanic: His second skill allows him to use wine to restore HP of any unit, but this causes said unit to lose control and only attack randomly for the next turn.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his arrogance, he's shown time and again to be kind-hearted and heroic.
  • Magical Floating Shawl: He wears one, just like what the actual Cháng'é herself is depicted to have, which further cements his image as the God of the Moon.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Not to the extent of Buddha’s Temptation, but he's portrayed as rather sultry, especially in the Japanese dub.
  • Power Floats: He never walks, instead floats around whenever he needs to move. Even when he sleeps, he stays floating.
  • Proud Beauty: He is incredibly cocky about his beauty and constantly mentions it. He considers himself more beautiful than Buddha’s Temptation.
  • Red Herring: The player can be led to believe that Osmanthus Wine is responsible for the Guanghan Palace’s drastic changes; the fact that he put the young master and Moon Cake under house arrest and seems to cooperate with Yipin Pot - who acts antagonistic himself - doesn’t help his case. It turns out that the Guanghan Palace had already been in shambles since his arrival, and he’s just as clueless as anyone else. His suspicious behavior is a result of following Yipin Pot‘s guide to recover Guanghan Palace‘s core power, which is supposed to help him get better.
  • The Rival: Seems to be this to Peach Petal Congee. If it has something to do with beauty (the concept or beauty care), expect them to break out into an argument on the messaging app.
  • Situational Sword: His third skill, "Falling Osmanthus", is infamous for being so situational that it generally does more harm than good. It prolongs all Status Effects the whole team has, debuffs included - which means he can make the team more vulnerable or outright kill the team faster if the debuff in question is Poison. As such, he can only be safely used when the enemy doesn’t give debuffs, and has greatest utility when paired with another Support Party Member who provides buffs. It is also universally agreed that he shouldn’t be used in auto.
  • Smells Sexy: His favorite gift item is a scented oil dispenser, which he remarks as smelling like himself.

    Braised Trepang

Braised Trepang

A Shandong Cuisine supposedly created by famous chef Wang Shizhen. The adopted son of a seafood tycoon. A pampered young master who knows nothing of commoner's woes and leads a life of decadence. His only worry is that he can't seem to get tanned.

  • Achievements in Ignorance: After inheriting his adopted father's business, he continued his thoughtless spending and often invests in meaningless projects with little hope of returns, but the things is all of those eventually make a profit. One such investment, the Fengzeyuan restaurant franchise, even became a national brand name, so he has thus been seen as the savior by its main chef, Wang Shizhen.
  • Born Lucky: Since his birth, he was adopted by a childless seafood tycoon and led a life of luxury, then inherited his father’s entire fortune without any struggle. Even though his business decisions are thoughtless, they all make great profits. Perhaps the only thing in life he has to strive for is a tanned skin.
  • But Not Too White: As he identifies with the aesthetics of a sea cucumber (because he’s one), he dislikes the pale skin color he gets as a Food Spirit and has been trying his best to become tan, to no avail.
  • Classy Cane: Among all the costly accessories he has on his body, the emerald green staff designed by a master artisan inspired by the famous Shandong leek is his favorite. For whatever reason, he is enamored by it and is often seen toying with it.
  • Coat Cape: Wears his fur-trimmed coat like this, which signifies his coolness.
  • Conspicuous Consumption: Everything he wears is tailor made, with even his tie bar and belt buckle are fashioned out of pure gold, while the gemstone ring on his middle finger alone is worth a fortune. He even sprinkles the letters he sends to the young master with gold leaves.
  • Cool Shades: Can’t get cooler than a millionaire in sunglasses.
  • Eccentric Millionaire: His immense wealth leads to some unusual quirks, like his fascination and borderline obsession with tanning. He also gifts weird stuffs to people he likes, recently develops an interest in crocodiles, and really likes playing with a cane made in the image of a leek.
  • Fiction 500: He’s been hailed as the wealthiest person in Kongsang with a seafood business and a successful restaurant franchise to his name, among other things. He talks about building a factory or buying an island in the most casual tone ever, and in one of his voice lines gives the young master his gemstone ring which is established to be worth a fortune when he thinks they like it with barely a shift in his voice.
  • Gemstone Assault: He attacks by casting light on an enemy with a huge gem in his second skill, and throwing gems at all enemies in his third.
  • Hidden Depths: Because of how filthy rich he is, he gets whatever he wants easily and thus has little appreciation for them. This changes when he arrives at Kongsang and meets the young master though.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Braised Trepang usually likes to flaunt his wealth by making the smallest thing from him seem luxurious, so when his fourth letter comes written in a simple piece of white paper, it signifies that whatever written in there doesn’t belong to the Eccentric Millionaire everyone is familiar with, but the true him - the Food Spirit Braised Trepang in his barest. Indeed, the letter is him confessing about his Hidden Depths and his desire to learn to value everything around him more under the young master’s guidance.
  • Passive-Aggressive Kombat: Engages in one with Buddha’s Temptation in the prologue of the event Azure Horizon since they both want to attend the Tianhai Tournament’s banquet with the young master. It ends with a Lightning Glare and the young master sneaking out to find someone else to accompany them.
Buddha’s Temptation: "I expected nothing less of Kongsang's wealthiest, childe Cong. You're decisive and efficient, so I think it's a good idea to leave Kongsang to you."
Braised Trepang: "That's very flattering. You're not too bad either, Mr. Fu Shouquan, or should I say the prettiest in Kongsang. I believe we would benefit more if you stay behind in Kongsang."
  • Red Baron: For his incredible business decisions, many businessmen dub him the "Lord of the Seas".
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: As he has led a life of richness since birth, he is woefully unaware of how to save money and will spend however much it takes to achieve his goals. He also expects to use money to solve all problems, which can end well or badly depending on the outcome of the battle.
"Problems that can be solved by money aren't problems!"
  • Uncle Pennybags: When he takes a liking to someone, he showers them in gifts. Weird gifts, but still valuable gifts. In his second letter, which he sends along with a huge bag of gifts (to Lu Wu’s dismay), he mentions that seeing people being happy with what he’s chosen for them also fills him with joy.

    Sweet Lotus Seed

Risen from the mud to deityhood, with a pure heart he spreads the fragrance of the lotus

Cuisine: Hunan (湘)
Class: Control
Other Names: Ice Lotus, Saint Lotus
Voiced by: Zhao Lu (CN), Takuya Sato (JP)

A Hunan Cuisine that once impressed the Western Han emperor Liu Bang. After becoming a Food Soul, he was regarded by those near him as a deity who grants wishes. In reality, however, he is just a lotus picker who wants peace of mind.

  • Fire-Forged Friends: Whereas Sweet Sour Whitebait reveres him, Sweet Lotus Seed finds the other an annoyance at best but still tolerates his presence. Barely.
  • Flower Motif: Lotuses, as he’s a dish made from lotus seed. His ice powers even take the shape of a lotus blossom.
  • Harmless Freezing: He mentions that whenever Sweet Sour Whitebait gets too annoying to his tolerance, he seals himself in ice so that he won’t feel or hear anything for days. Being a Food Spirit with the power of ice to boost, it’s understandable that he isn’t concerned about the side effects.
  • Have I Mentioned I Am a Dwarf Today?: Is not a xiān, and will insist on such if ever called one.
  • The Hermit: He used to live a solitary life around Dongting Lake before his existence got recognized, and when put into his unique decor Icy Lotus Heart, the petals will close to hide him away, reflecting his reclusive nature. All he wants is peace and quiet, and nothing to bother him.
  • An Ice Person: He excels in controlling ice and freezing people. In gameplay, he also specializes in inflicting the Frost status, which has a chance to make afflicted enemies lose their turn.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Since he hasn’t had much contact with people before, he can be insensitive to others’ feelings and what he means as "praises" may come off as an insult instead, like this one below:
"Being with you is as carefree as when I'm alone... I'm complimenting you, why are you glaring at me?"
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Contrary to the stoic impression he gives, he can be quite brash and attacks people simply because he finds them annoying without thinking through. In the Azure Horizon event, he freezes the palace guard after he refused to let the young master through without an invitation (which they lost earlier), and as a result gets the group in jail until Shunde Raw Fish recognizes and releases them.
  • Mundane Utility: If his Work voice line is to be believed, the young master has asked him to make shaved ice before.
  • Mystical White Hair: He’s constantly mistaken for a deity, and his white hair might not help his case.
  • Personality Power: He has power over ice and is also a stoic hermit. He's so distant that his first letter to the young master when you Star Up is exactly one word long.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: He’s "sugar" (a desert made from lotus seeds cooked in sugar) and "ice" (An Ice Person) in the most literal sense. In a less literal sense, though he seems cold and aloof, when someone has enough patience to approach him (and not pissing him off in the process), he’s revealed to be quite simpleminded and innocent about his emotions. He can also be cordial to those he considers pleasant, like how he acts towards the young master and Yangzhou Rice in the Azure Horizon event.
  • Unwanted False Faith: He came to be known and worshipped as Saint Lotus after rescuing mortals, and only continues to grant the wishes of those who light a lotus votive lamp in hope that he may be left in peace. It has the total opposite effect, to his dismay.

A fishermen by trade, he rides the waves against the gust

Cuisine: Hunan (湘)
Class: Support
Other Names: Yuanbai
Voiced by: Teng Xin (CN), Seiichirō Yamashita (JP)

A Hunan Cuisine who became a food soul during the Ming Dynasty. A young fisherman of Dongting Lake with impeccable hospitality, he always appears along with his friends like a school of Salangid. Like those around him, he’s a faithful devotee of Saint Lotus. He has an osprey called "Old Fellow".

  • Action Pet: His osprey can attack by pecking at the enemy in his third skill.
  • Cute Little Fang: He has one, which fits his "boy next door" type of charm.
  • The Ditz: He doesn’t exactly have the smartest line of thoughts. When Hazel Grouse Soup passes he and the young master off as foods for his pet, Sweetsour Whitebait panics until he has a realization that he materialized from food, thus it makes sense for him to become food again.
  • Keet: He’s a cheerful, honest and friendly fella who loves to be among the crowd and is very well-liked by the people around Dongting Lake, though his sense of boundaries can be quite blurry. Even the young master sometimes finds him a little too noisy to handle.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": He is, without shame or doubt, the biggest fanboy of Saint Lotus in the room, and spares no effort to showcase his devotion.
  • Innocently Insensitive: He adores and loves to be around Sweet Lotus Seed, completely oblivious to the fact that the latter finds him noisy and disruptive to his peaceful solidarity.
    • His fourth letter also mentions that the young master once invited him privately to a walk along the beach, but then he brought friends along and had a party instead, which saddened the young master and caused him a lot of regret once he realizes what that invitation was meant to be, thus he wants to make up for it.
  • Loyal Animal Companion: He’s always accompanied by his osprey that he called "Old Fellow", as it has been with him for a long time. While never referred to as anything more than a normal osprey, "Old Fellow" does seem to have a level of sentience and is sometimes even more sensible than its owner.
  • Pals with Jesus: From his point of view at least, he’s friends with Sweet Lotus Seed whom he and the townsfolk around Dongting Lake worship as a deity.
  • Parrot Pet Position: The osprey is always seen on his shoulders.
  • The Power of Friendship: Sweetsour Whitebait is a social butterfly, and the ability to unite and lead people to fight as one is his greatest strength. This is reflected in gameplay with his second skill "Gather Friend", which allows one random ally to deal a normal attack on Sweetsour Whitebait’s target.
  • Rod And Reel Repurposed: Befitting a fisherman, he uses his fishing rod as weapon in battle.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: He can understand his osprey, but is occasionally too ditzy to understand its implication. He was also the one who translated the textual clue from Squid in the Mystery Phantom event.

    Drunken Chicken

A Zhejiang Cuisine. Cooked with chicken legs and Shaoxing Wine, it is very aromatic. Although he always says he hates trouble, he's an honest and kind man. You could even call him the "goody two-shoes" of Kongsang.

  • Can't Hold His Liquor: He has a terribly low alcohol tolerance and can get drunk on the small amount of wine he ingested when a bottle was thrown at him. And when he’s drunk, he wrecks havoc.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: In the past, the tavern owner who was basically his family was injured during a brawl between drunkards and passed away, leading to his hatred for alcohol.
  • Drunken Boxing: His style of fighting, and in his third skill he practices eighteen boxing moves against the enemies.
  • Drunken Master: He is noticeably in a drunken state in every battle, implying that he’s only willing to fight and at his strongest while drunk.
  • The Teetotaler: He is a staunch supporter of banning alcohols and wants to control the alcohol consumption of everyone in Kongsang.
  • Turn the Other Cheek: In one of his interludes, he deals with a rude drunken patron in Kongsang Restaurant with patience and courtesy, offering the man a hot towel and getting him a hangover remedy when that was roughly declined. Even when the patron starts insulting them, he and the young master decide to restrain an enraged Mapo Tofu instead of letting him hit the patron. He only knocks that man out once he gets drunk on the wine from the bottle thrown at him.

    Seafood Tofu Stew

Reason offers no refuge for the relatives, the law gives no quarter to the nobles

Cuisine: Hunan (湘)

Other Names:
Voiced by: Zhao Yi (CN), Takashi Kondo (JP)

A Huanan Cuisine. Put Squid, Sea Cucumber, Shiitake, Prawns, Silken Tofu and other ingredients into the claypot and eat it together. His character is a little rigid and uncompromising. A law-abiding man who clearly distinguishes between right and wrong.

  • Awesomeness by Analysis: He realizes the fake censor's true identity because the censor's letter was delivered from Chang'an, yet the felt mat on their camel is a Persian carpet that is popular in the western regions. The first group of merchants carrying goods like that is still waiting about Mingsha Mountain for inspection, which means the real censor couldn’t have bought them.
  • The Comically Serious: In his first letter, with utmost seriousness, he discusses some behaviors in Kongsang to see if they can be considered violations of the law, including Harbin Fried Pork’s Training from Hell, Suckling Pig Roast’s accidental destruction of properties, and…Geely Shrimp’s Shipper on Deck tendencies.
  • Heel Realization: He comes to the realization that "Shadow of the Night" has been enacting the same justice that East Longan Pearls and he himself are upholding, thus he feels that the law is no longer adequate to judge the thief and tries to get East Longan Pearls Taken Off the Case - emphasis on tries. Later, he also admits that he’s at fault for allowing the Corrupt Bureaucrats to trample on the laws right in front of him.
  • No Social Skills: He’s eloquent and talkative when the subjects are related to the law, but outside of it he has difficulty putting his thoughts into words even though he has mentally prepared himself, takes everything so seriously that he becomes The Comically Serious, and when he gets nervous, he throws down his tablets and just stares at them until he regains his composure.
  • Situational Sword: "Fair Ruling" doesn’t have a lot of niches, but is the perfect counter for One-Hit Kill since DMG share allows the whole team to survive, and the lost HP can always be healed back unlike a defeated unit.
  • Synchronization: His third skill "Fair Ruling" grants all allies the unique buff Soul Chain for 1 round, splitting all their direct DMG taken.
  • Scales of Justice: His unique decor, "Careful Consideration", is a see-saw seat in the form of a scales. Hilariously, when Seafood Tofu Stew sits on it, the scales stop swinging.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He spends most of the event being pushed around and held captive, so the moment he snaps and holds Grand Protectorate Yang at knifepoint for attacking East Longan Pearls In the Back as he berates the bastard is quite unexpectedly badass.
  • Workaholic: He’s very focused on studying laws or reading the files overtime, sometimes to the point of not noticing others approaching. His special gift is a bottle of eyedrops, and in one of his voice lines the young master teaches him some eye exercises as well to help him with his works.

Bulatt, or Biluo, is a flour-based dish with sweet or salty stuffing brought in from the Western Region during the Tang Dynasty and gradually localized. Upon becoming a Food Soul, he became a polite, agile, and clever young man dressed in exotic garments and with secret desires in his heart.

  • Affectionate Nickname: He lovingly calls the young master "little daisy" in several of his voice lines.
  • Ambiguous Situation: What happened to the real Prince Pirooz, and how much of Pirooz‘s historical deeds were done by Cherry Biluo instead? The prince went missing presumably at a young age and was replaced by his Identical Stranger Cherry Biluo, but Cherry Biluo mentions that the national treasure ring "Sunset" was given to him by Pirooz, meaning they had met face-to-face at one point, and if the words of Boneless CarpQuote  - who knows his true identity as a Food Spirit - can be taken seriously, Cherry Biluo has been the one who asked for help from the Tang dynasty.
  • Ancient Persia: He originated from and was a prince of the Sassanian Empire, the last Iranian empire before the early Muslim conquests. As such, his outfit and demeanor are all dripping with the exotic Western Region’s culture, and his favorite gift is Saffron spice, an item of great significance in Persia. His motive in Loulan Inception is to revive the nation after its demise.
  • Anti-Villain: He betrayed the young master and East Longan Pearls to find the Loulan treasure that he believed can revive his homeland, and almost let them drown to ensure that no one would get in his way. However, he only resorted to using the treasure because the Tang dynasty never responded to his plead for help, and didn’t expect the Loulan soldiers to go rouge and everyone to attack each other under the effect of the Loulan blooms. When chaos starts to unfold, he is horrified and desperately begging for it to stop, proclaiming that bloodshed has never been his intention.
  • Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: Prince Pirooz, or Peroz III, is an actual historical figure of the Tang Dynasty. Subverted in that Cherry Biluo only impersonated Pirooz, and the real Pirooz was probably human.
  • Broken Tears: He is full-on sobbing during the chaos caused by Boneless Carp and the Loulan statues, begging them to stop as that wasn’t what he wanted and having an Identity Breakdown.
  • Cherry Blossom Girl: He wears jewels that resemble red cherries and pink clothes, and is a charming Princely Young Man.
  • Critical Status Buff: Whenever his HP drops below 50%, he enters an invincible state, summons Loulan's soldiers to attack all his enemies and apply the Leech debuff.
  • Delicate and Sickly: His profile mentions that he was born sickly and couldn't participate in combat directly, thus he has to fight via his Summon Magic.
  • King Incognito: He first appears as a merchant from Tokharistan, but his true identity is Prince Pirooz of the lost Sassanian Empire...or so everyone is led to believed. Nonetheless, Cherry Biluo keeps up his role until the very end and persists in history in the real Pirooz‘s place.
  • Identity Breakdown: He calls himself the prince of the Sassanian Empire when wondering why he can’t order the Loulan statues to stop slaughtering people, but then immediately corrects himself that he’s just Cherry Biluo and not the actual prince at all. The confusion, combined with the pressure and anguish he’s facing, causes him to emotionally break down. Thankfully the young master affirms that although he isn’t Prince Pirooz, he can still be a honorable prince of Persia as he fights to protect the remains of his empire.
  • Mistaken Identity: He was originally the youngest son of a wealthy tycoon in Chang'an, but was kidnapped and mistaken for the missing prince of the Sassanian Empire due to having identical appearance. However, he was charmed by the exotic culture on his way to the Western Region and accepted his new identity.
  • Princely Young Man: He’s a gallant, cordial young man of royal background. Thanks to being a dish from the Western Region, he also inherits the people’s romanticism and is very courteous to any lady he meets.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: As the last prince of the Sassanian Empire, he takes the responsibility of re-establishing his nation upon himself, either by begging the Tang dynasty for help or by using the Loulan weapon to gain the power to fight the Arabs.
  • Sand Blaster: His dagger allows him to gather sand and turn it into a Loulan Soldier in his first skill.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: He’s confused when East Longan Pearls mockingly calls him a "storyteller" after his detailed exposition of why he chose the constable as his escort.
Dong Sima: "…I didn't know you were also a storyteller in Tokharistan."
    Bula: "What?"
  • Summon Magic: He summons the Loulan Soldiers from sand to fight for him and protect him.
  • Taking the Bullet: When East Longan Pearls attempts to destroy the altar, Cherry Biluo reaches out to block his sword and gets his hand injured, but his only concern is that the ritual can go on.
  • Warrior Poet: He quotes excerpts from the Rubaiyat quite often in his letters and asks if the young master wants to revise the poem with him in his Greet voice line. In battle, he also fights poetically by calling upon the Loulan Soldiers, last remnants of Persia’s glory.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: All he wants when trying to revive his nation is to see his homeland again before the demise of Persia.

A new year staple in reunion dinners at spring, he’s deeply influenced by festive atmosphere and programs since he came into being. His accent often takes on a distinctive Spring Festival Gala-esque flavor. He eventually settles in the Green Hills as a famous announcer.

  • The Announcer: His entire schtick. More specifically, he’s an announcer for Spring Festival Gala - a special show aired during Lunar New Year to look back on the previous year and spread the festivity for a happy upcoming year with gameshows, music and preparations for the festival. It requires a specific energy to handle the Gala from start to end, and New Year Fish does it flawlessly every time with his unique blend of control and style.
  • Perpetual Smiler: As expected from a professional show host, he always keeps the atmosphere jovial whenever he appears and never loses his smile.
  • Stepford Smiler: In his third letter, he admits that while he has determined to make the eternally upbeat "Spring Festival Gala announcer" his entire persona, in the end he can still have sadness and low spirits, and fears that’s unbecoming for him. However, thanks to the young master’s suggestion, he takes up vlogging where he shows his more demure self behind-the-scene and occasionally complains on his blog, then finds out that everyone also likes him for who he really is.
