    Grand Kai

Grand Kai (大界王, Dai Kaiō, "Great King of Worlds")

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dragon_ball_z_grand_kai_by_tekilazo.png
Voiced by (Japanese): Ryuji Saikachi

Voiced by (Latin American Spanish): Carlos Magaña (Z), Eduardo Borja (Movie 12)

The guy in charge of the lower Kais, and the de facto head of the Other World. Appears as an elderly figure with Cool Shades. Known to be quite genial, the Kais themselves believe he is very formidable, and that may be the case, but he has gotten a bit rusty over the centuries. Hosts the Other World Tournament in order to pick a fighter who will be personally trained by him, but it turns out technically nobody won, though he offers to train Goku in 300 years.

  • Blatant Lies: It's heavily implied that Goku and Pikkon's "disqualification" was just Grand Kai making up a rule on the spot because they had outclassed him and he had gotten rusty.
  • Canon Immigrant: Inverted. He exists in the manga, but he doesn't appear. However, his appearance and characterization were developed by Toriyama himself, and thus, is more fleshed out in the anime.
  • Cool Car: Owns a blue Cadillac convertible. North Kai is naturally impressed. He may even have got it relatively recently.
  • Cool Old Guy: He's introduced as an aging hipster who likes listening to rock music, outside his formal wear. He's also very respectful to the lower Kais and their warriors alike.
  • Cool Shades: Wouldn't be a Kai without one.
  • The Leader: He is the leader of the lower kais but the Supreme Kais outrank him.
  • Rules Lawyer: Disqualified both Goku and Pikkon in the Other World Tournament for touching the top roof of the ring at the same time, citing the tournament rulebook too, which may or may not have been a lie. To his credit, he offers to train Goku in 300 years (which would be enough time for him to get into shape).
  • Super-Speed: Is faster than a Post-Cell Games (Base) Goku and East Kai's jet bike.

    King Kai/Kaiō-sama

    West Kai

West Kai (西の界王, Nishi no Kaiō, "West King of Worlds")

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/west_kai_by_tekilazo.png
Voiced by (Japanese): Bin Shimada
Voiced by (English): Kyle Hebert (Funimation dub); Terry Klassen (Ocean dub)
Voiced by (Latin American Spanish): José Arenas, Carlos Magaña (ep. 278), Enrique Mederos (Movie 12)

The West Kai is the god of the western quadrant of the universe and North Kai's personal rival. He is also Pikkon's master.

  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Although he may be short-tempered and a Sore Loser, he is undoubtedly the best teacher among the Kais next to King Kai. Tapkar made it to the quarterfinals, Maraikoh was in the semifinals and lost to Goku, and Pikkon nearly beat Goku during their match. He's also the one who taught Pikkon his signature Thunder Flash Attack.
  • Canon Immigrant: He's never seen in the original manga, so he was created for the anime. However, we can assume he exists in some form in the manga since there is a South and North Kai.
  • Hot-Blooded: He has a very short temper, especially when he's being teased by King Kai.
  • Only Sane Man: Despite being somewhat immature, he's the most grounded after King Kai.
  • Physical God: He is a god and is quite powerful compared to a normal mortal, however, Goku has long surpassed him by the time they meet. He also has a similar powerset to King Kai, like people seeing events on the lower worlds when they touch his back.
  • The Rival: Has a somewhat heated rivalry with King Kai. They often argued over who has the best student when it comes to Goku and Pikkon.
  • Sore Loser: He doesn't take losing well. During the Otherworld Tournament, he often makes excuses for why someone on his team lost. King Kai calls him out on this.

    South Kai

South Kai (南の界王, Minami no Kaiō, "South King of Worlds")

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dragon_ball_z_south_kai_psd72631.png
Voiced by (Japanese): Toku Nishio (Z), Hiroshi Naka (Kai)
Voiced by (English): Dameon Clarke (Z), Jason Douglas (Kai) (Funimation dub); Scott McNeil (Ocean dub)
Voiced by (Latin American Spanish): César Soto (Z and Movie 12)
Voiced by (Italian): Aldo Stella

The South Kai is the god of the southern quadrant of the universe. He is the only lower Kai besides King Kai to appear in the original Dragon Ball manga.

  • Canon Immigrant: Unlike West and East Kai, he actually makes a physical appearance in the manga, where he got a cameo before the World Tournament Saga.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Compared to the other Kais, he seems to be the most spacey and have the oddest group of fighters. One of his students, Caterpy, tries to beat Goku by literally tickling him, which shocked and confused everyone, including his fellow Kais.
  • Cool Shades: Like King Kai, he always wears sunglasses.
  • Informed Ability: It is stated that he focuses on defense fighting, however, we only see one fighter use any type of defense style.
  • Physical God: Like the other lower Kais, he is the god who overlooks his section of the universe. Although how his power compares to King Kai is unknown, he is a great deal weaker than most of the main characters. He does, however, have special abilities like being able to increase weight.
  • The Rival: Although nowhere near as heated as the rivalry between West and North Kai, he often compares his students to others, calling them the best. He tries to show off Papoi as his best student to North Kai, only to back down once he realizes how much more powerful Goku is.
  • Underestimating Badassery: He completely underestimates Goku, thinking that his best pupil Papoi can easily beat him. He quickly realizes how wrong he is when he sees Super Saiyan Goku easily train with forty tons worth of weights.

    East Kai

East Kai (東の界王, Higashi no Kaiō, "East Queen of Worlds")

Voiced by (Portuguese): Cristina Cavalinhos

The East Kai is the god of the eastern quadrant of the universe. She is the only female among the lower Kais.

  • Butt-Monkey: She becomes this to the other Kais since she only had one fighter, Arqua, in the quarterfinals while King Kai had two, South Kai had two, and West Kai had three.
  • Canon Immigrant: She's never seen in the original manga, so she was created for the anime. However, we can assume she exists in some form in the manga since there is a South and North Kai.
  • Cool Bike: She drives a jet motorbike that is so fast that it can keep up with post-Cell Games base form Goku.
  • Cool Shades: She is always wearing sunglasses like North and South Kai.
  • Fragile Speedster: Her fighters are known for their exceptional speed, however, given that she only had one fighter in the quarterfinals, her team wasn't physically strong.
  • Hairstyle Malfunction: Her wig flies off during Goku and Pikkon's battle during the Otherworld Tournament finale, much to the shock of the other Kais.
  • Out of Focus: Compared to her male brethren, and not counting Fusion Reborn, she only appears after the Other World Tournament during the finale of GT where Goku asks for everyone in the universe for their energy so he can destroy Omega Shenron via Spirit Bomb.
  • Physical God: Like the other lower Kais, she is the god who overlooks her section of the universe. Although her power compared to other Kais is unknown, she's a great deal weaker than most of the main characters.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Well, she is a god who overlooks the entire eastern quadrant of the universe, but she tends to think she's bigger than she actually is. Doesn't help that her team of fighters performed the worst out of all the Kais.
  • Stern Teacher: She's very hard on her students. She makes them run one-thousand laps around the arena after not one of them made it to the semifinals.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She is the lone female among all the lower Kais. In the Kai system in general, she's the only female next to West Supreme Kai, who is long dead by the start of the series.
  • Thrill Seeker: She loves a good race and her fellow kais say that she's always looking for a reason to get some use out of her motorbike. It is implied that this is the real reason that she challenged Goku to see if he could compete in the Other World Tournament.

North Kai's Fighters

These are the fighters who were trained by North Kai and participate the Otherworld Tournament. North Kai only has two outstanding fighters, but one is a legendary hero from Earth who is the basis for most heroic legends on the planet and the other is Goku, the strongest Saiyan in the universe and the main hero of the series.

    Son Goku

    Olibu

Olibu (オリブー, Oribū)

Voiced by (Japanese): Masaharu Sato (Ep. 196-199), Hisao Egawa (Ep. 270), Yasuhiko Kawazu (Ep. 278)
Voiced by (English): Rick Robertson (Z), Christopher Sabat (Kai: The Final Chapters) (Funimation dub); Dale Wilson (Mainly), John Payne (Z Ep. 278), Ted Cole (Z Ep. 271) (Ocean dub)

He's a fighter who represents the northern quadrant during the Otherworld Tournament. He is King Kai's greatest fighter and student after Goku.

  • Always Second Best: Although he is extremely strong, he severely falls behind Pikkon and Goku. While Pikkon was able to beat him without ever removing his weighted clothes or using his best attacks, Goku pushed Pikkon, even if he was outmatched.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: He uses no energy attacks and only uses ki to fly. Almost all his power comes from brute strength and training. He's also one of the strongest fighters in Otherworld, only behind Goku and Pikkon.
  • The Comically Serious: He is one of the most serious people in the Otherworld, and he's surrounded by goofballs.
  • Deadpan Snarker: His reaction while watching Goku and Caterpy's 'fight':
Olibu: South quadrant must be a very peaceful place.
  • Energy Ball: Shoots a homing one at Pikkon when they fight.
  • Expy: He is based on Hercules in terms of having "heroic legends" as King Kai himself suggests and because his name resembles "Olympus", the Greek mountain where the Greek gods' kingdom was stated to be located. He also resembles Conan the Barbarian as well as Thor from Marvel Comics, which are all based on the same Hercules-type hero archetype.
  • Folk Hero: He is this to the Earth since according to King Kai, most of Earth's heroic legends are based on Olibu's acts of heroism during his lifetime.
  • Graceful Loser: He loses to Pikkon during the tournament, but he isn't bitter about it. He shakes Pikkon's hand and congratulated him on his win.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: He becomes fast friends with Goku, despite him being hundreds if not thousands of years older than him.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is based on "olive", the name of a species of tree and its fruit which is an important food crop in Italy, Spain, and especially in Greece among other countries around the Mediterranea. Fitting since he's based on a Greek hero.
  • Mr. Exposition: He is the one who tells Goku, and in extension the audience, about how the four lower Kais watch over the different quadrants of the universe while the Grand Kai is the one who leads them. He also talks about the different levels of the Otherworld like there is Hell, then Snake Way above it, then the lower Kais' worlds, and then the Grand Kai's planet which is above everything.
  • Only Sane Man: He, along with Pikkon, is one of the few contestants at the tournament who doesn't have a quirk or a gimmick.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: He's the third-strongest fighter at the Otherworld Tournament. Unfortunately, he's severely outclassed by Goku and especially Pikkon.
  • Shrouded in Myth: Almost all of Earth's legendary heroes are based on him. No one remembers the real man since he died thousands of years ago.
  • Superior Successor: He is much stronger than King Kai, the person who trained him a long time ago. Although, King Kai never taught him the Kaio-Ken or the Spirit Bomb.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: He serves as this to Pikkon, giving him his first real challenge at the tournament, despite their fight being relatively short.
  • The Worf Effect:
    • Gets beaten up by Yamcha of all people in a later filler scene during the Buu Saga.
    • More seriously, he's one of the many fighters who gets effortlessly dispatched by Kid Buu when he arrives on the Grand Kai's planet.
  • World's Strongest Man: He's originally from Earth and is the strongest human we have seen in the series since he can fight against Pikkon who stomped Cell, Frieza, King Cold, and the entire Ginyu Force in seconds.

West Kai's Fighters

These are the fighters who were trained by West Kai and participate in the Otherworld Tournament. Overall, West Kai has the strongest group of fighters with Pikkon being The Ace.

    Pikkon

Pikkon (パイクーハン, Paikūhan)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/paikuhan.png
Voiced by (Japanese): Hikaru Midorikawa
Voiced by (English): Kyle Hebert (Funimation dub); Brian Drummond (Ocean dub)
Voiced by (Latin American Spanish): Enrique Mederos

A filler character from the Otherworld. A long-dead alien hero, he is the West Kai's number one student and stopped the riot in Hell that Goku was supposed to deal with. He participated in the Other World Tournament faced Goku in the finals, although he ultimately lost. He also helped Goku deal with Buu during the Buu Saga and with Janemba in Fusion Reborn and a minor cameo in Bio-Broly.

  • The Ace: He's able to completely worf Frieza, King Cold, the Ginyu Force, and Cell all single-handed with no effort, and go toe-to-toe with Goku without any real problems. He is one of the few characters that Goku fought which put him in the underdog position during the Other World Tournament.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: In Fusion Reborn, he's more prone to losing his cool than in the anime.
  • Always Someone Better: Proves himself the superior fighter when he faces Goku during the Other World Tournament. Even after going Super Saiyan, Goku struggles to keep up at every step and only manages a technical victory by blasting Pikkon out of bounds with an Instant Kamehameha (which is rendered moot when the Grand Kai rules they had both already been disqualified when they touched the ceiling).
  • Ascended Extra: Pikkon was initially conceived as a filler character and Suspiciously Similar Substitute for the Other World arc, he both appears later on in the Buu Saga and in one of the movies. He even gets a cameo in Kai when Kid Buu arrives in Otherworld, despite Kai cutting out the Otherworld filler.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: His Thunder Flash Attack. It's extremely powerful since it's able to knock Goku on his butt twice, but it takes a long time to charge and leaves the user open for a counter-attack. Goku takes advantage of this to beat Pikkon.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Calls Goku "sloppy" during their match, among other things. He also seriously underestimates and mocks Kid Buu, not realizing how close to Deader than Dead he was.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He's the one to distract Janemba long enough to allow Vegeta and Goku to fuse and make Gogeta.
  • Blow You Away: His Hyper Tornado attack.
  • Combat Pragmatist: He has no problems attacking an opponent when their guard is down or exploiting a known weakness if it means securing the victory as fast as possible.
  • The Comically Serious: A lot of the humor from Pikkon comes from him being a very serious person while the rest of the contestants at the tournament are Bunny Ears Lawyers and Cloud Cuckoolanders.
  • Did Not See That Coming: He didn't know that Goku could teleport, which leaves him blindsided when Goku performs the Warp Kamehameha on him while he's in the middle of his Thunder Flash Attack.
  • Do Not Touch the Funnel Cloud: His Hyper Tornado attack, doubles as Razor Wind.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • Paul Kuhan in the French dub and the other dubs based on it, a strange transliteration of his Japanese name.
    • The name "Pikkon" itself is also a name change, as it's "Paikuhan" in the original Japanese version. Some dubs like the Latin American Spanish one retain the "Paikuhan" name.
  • Elemental Powers: The basis behind most of his techniques. Over the course of his appearances, Pikkon shows off fire, wind, and electricity powers, more so than the series' more typical ki attacks.
  • Fatal Flaw: His arrogance. He had his match against Goku all but won, but instead of taking Goku out with a simple attack, he had to get fancy and do his Thunder Flash Attack again, not suspecting that Goku would learn about the attack's weakness after seeing it for the third time.
  • Graceful Loser: He accepts his loss to Goku with grace, admitting that he's a great fighter.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: After removing his weighted clothing, his speed skyrocketed to the point where he can keep up with a full-power Super Saiyan Goku.
  • Necessary Drawback: Thunder Flash Attack is insanely powerful, knocking a Super Saiyan Goku flat on his back twice. However, it has a long prep and execution time, giving an opponent a chance to sneak in quickly and attack.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: All of Pikkon's fights tend to end quickly since he isn't one to brag or talk. His match with Goku is where he talks the most and even then he tries to take Goku down swiftly with powerful techniques.
  • The Noseless: One of the very few fighters in the series without a nose, much like Krillin.
  • Not So Stoic: He gets easily frustrated in Fusion Reborn. Then he invokes it when he realizes that insults break Janemba's barrier.
  • Oh, Crap!: His expression just before Goku nails him with a Kamehameha to defeat him at the tournament.
  • Only Sane Man: He is one of the few contestants at the tournament who doesn't have a quirk or a gimmick.
  • Out of Focus: Due to both being a filler character and no adventures taking place in Otherworld, Pikkon hasn't any gotten attention since Fusion Reborn.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: His Thunder Flash Attack is so destructive and dangerous to those around him that West Kai forbids him to use it during the tournament. He does it anyway, three times at that, much to West Kai's annoyance.
  • Playing with Fire: His oddly named Thunder Flash Attack, as well as his Burning Shoot.
  • Power Limiter: He wears heavily weighted clothes just like Piccolo and Goku at the beginning of Z, which restrains his power. The moment he removes them, he becomes noticeably stronger and faster.
  • Punny Name: His name is a pun on "Pecan" in English and in Japanese a pun on Paikuhan (literally "Pork-rib Rice")
  • The Quiet One: He doesn't typically say much to his opponents such as Cell and Frieza, he's considerably more talkative when in more relaxed settings, though he still doesn't say a whole lot.
  • Razor Wind: He has a wind-base attack known as the Hyper Tornado that he uses to trap Goku in which slowly sliced him apart. Goku is forced to use the Kaioken on top of his Super Saiyan to escape.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Downplayed. He has deep red eyes and is a fearsome fighter who shows no mercy towards his opponent, but he's a heroic character to the point of keeping his body upon death.
  • Signature Move: His Thunder Flash Attack.
  • Sixth Ranger: He's an unofficial Z-Fighter for adventures that take place in the Other World.
  • Smug Super: He is very powerful and he knows it. After Goku tells him that he didn't need his help to defeat Cell, Frieza, King Cold, and the Ginyu Force, Pikkon readily agrees. When he's on the verge of winning the Otherworld Tournament, he smugly tells Goku that he will beat him with the technique that he got to know so well. This bites him majorly in the ass since Goku saw the Thunder Flash Attack twice already and figures out how to counter it by the third use.
  • Spam Attack: From what we see of Pikkon's arsenal during his fights, he really likes to follow up his attacks with that exact same move as long as it's successful. It's what ultimately ends up costing him the match, as using Thunder Flash Attack multiple times allows Goku to realize the move's glaring weakness.
  • The Stoic: Very rarely loses his cool and remains calm despite the bizarrely around him.
  • Strong as They Need to Be: He's strong enough to defeat Super Perfect Cell in two hits without even taking off his weighted clothes. Yet Super Saiyan Goku was able to fight him on a somewhat even footing, even though Goku at the time was much weaker than Super Perfect Cell.
  • Superior Successor: He has long ago surpassed West Kai, his mentor who taught him the Thunder Flash Attack.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: A green man who trains with weighted clothing and fought Goku in a martial arts tournament? That doesn't sound like Piccolo at all! Toriyama says this was intentional, Akira Toriyama said he tried to make him "Piccolo-esque" even down to facial expressions. Reportedly, the anime's staff animated him using the references sheets for Piccolo.
  • Underestimating Badassery:
    • What did Pikkon in during the tournament is that he didn't take Goku completely seriously since he's superior to him in every way. This causes him to become overconfident and he uses his Thunder Flash Attack too many times, allowing Goku to learn how to counter it.
    • When Kid Buu teleports over to Other World, Pikkon is quick to call out his size and stature. Then when the Majin starts to attack, he shakes off everything anyone does to him. If Vegeta and Goku hadn't called his attention, it's very likely there would have been a mass Cessation of Existence.
  • Willfully Weak: He's extremely strong since he's able to take out Cell, Frieza, King Cold, and the entire Ginyu Force with one attack. However, he wasn't near his full power when he did this since he wears weighted clothes that limits his power. He only removes them when fighting Goku in the final match of the tournament.
  • World's Strongest Man: Or more accurately, Otherworld's strongest man. He's easily powerful enough that Grand kai calls on him to shut down the villains when they start making a ruckus in Hell, as does Goku in Bio-Broly. Pre-Super, Pikkon was actually one of the strongest non-saiyans in the series, with Goku needing to use both Super Saiyan Kaioken (materials like Raging Blast 2 states Pikkon still had the upper hand) and exploiting a glaring flaw in Pikkon's move to win.
  • The Worf Effect: Dealt by Kid Buu, who easily shrugs off Pikkon's attacks with his regeneration before one-shotting him, alongside Olibu, with a single energy blast.
  • Worthy Opponent: He and Goku have a lot of respect for each other even before they face off in the ring.
  • Wreathed in Flames: His Burning Shoot attack, which is kinda similar to the Kaioken.

    Tapkar

Tapkar (タピカー, Tapikā)

In the Otherworld Tournament, he makes it to the quarterfinals, where he fights against Torbie from the South Quadrant. Although fast, he has no endurance and gives up before Torbie can even touch him.

  • Crippling Overspecialization: He's fast...and that's about all he has going for him. Simply running at supersonic speed around a stadium wears him out.
  • Fragile Speedster: He is extremely fast, so much so that not even Goku can keep up with him when he's watching the match. However, he utterly wears himself out to the point that he gives up without Torbie even touching him, which causes everyone in the stadium (except King Kai and West Kai) to face fall in disbelief.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: His desire to show off his Super-Speed before his fight with Torbie left him completely exhausted, and no longer in any shape to fight.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: The very second he burns through his energy reserves, he gives up the match without a fight.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: West Kai builds him as this in his fight against Torbie. Turns out, that isn't the case.
  • Super-Speed: One of the fastest fighters witnessed in the series, but he has no stamina and can only use his speed for a very short amount of time.

    Maraikoh

Maraikoh (マーライコー, Māraikō)

Maraikoh is a powerful fighter from the western quadrant and made it all the way to the semifinals. He gives Goku a tough match before being defeated by Goku throwing him out of the ring by his tail.

  • Charles Atlas Superpower: He doesn't appear to use energy attacks and he doesn't even appear to fly, just jump. However, he is still strong enough to haul planetoids at people.
  • Expy: He looks similar to Giran, another humanoid dragon-like creature that participated in the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai.
  • Good Is Not Nice: He must've done something right in order to retain his body in the otherworld, but he does seem to have a cocky streak and is a bit of a showboat. It's something else he shares with Giran.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He is quite fast for his size, especially since Goku had a hard time even hitting him and seemingly disappeared at one point during the match. He is also strong enough to knock Goku through several meteoroids and throw a small planet at him.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Looks like an anthropomorphic dragon who strongly resembles Giras.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: He gives Goku a lot of trouble, but in the end, he didn't even make him go Super Saiyan.
  • Super-Strength: He throws a planetoid at Goku during their match.

South Kai's Fighters

These are the fighters who were trained by South Kai and participate in the Otherworld Tournament. South Kai trains his fighters in a defensive manner, but we don't see enough of his fighters to know what these defenses are other than Froug inflating himself. Olibu suspects that the southern quadrant is very peaceful given how one of the contestants fights.

    Caterpy

Goku's first opponent during the Otherworld Tournament. He has a very...unusual fighting style that he uses against Goku, but he's utterly no match for him. He is forced to transform into his ultimate form...that should be hatching in about 1,200 years. Goku wins by default.

  • Beware the Silly Ones: His fighting style is undoubtedly silly and childish, so much so that he leaves people speechless. However, the fact remains that he manages to disable Goku for several minutes by exploiting his Weaksauce Weakness.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Amazing, yes. Despite being quite weak, the fact remains that he manages to put Post-Cell Games Goku into a full-body lock that he couldn't immediately break free of even before the torture began.
  • Creepy Centipedes: Subverted. Although Caterpy is a giant caterpillar who towers over Goku and has ten arms, there is nothing creepy about him. He's in fact the most cartoon-looking of all the Otherworld fighters.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Anyone who thinks tickling is a viable method of fighting falls into this.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: One thing that can't be argued, Caterpy is a great tickler. His body is practically built for it since he has so many arms that can restrain and torment his opponent. The problem is, he doesn't seem to have any other skills. The moment Goku breaks free of his hold, he has to evolve to his ultimate form.
  • Did Not See That Coming: He lost primarily because he didn't think Goku would have the focus of mind to use his energy and blow him off in the midst of the Tickle Torture.
  • Exalted Torturer: Given that he doesn't appear to have any fighting skills, yet he was good and heroic enough to keep his body upon death and be trained by a Kai, you have to wonder if Caterpy was this in life, especially since it's obvious that he has successfully used Tickle Torture before.
  • Good Is Not Nice: He's undoubtedly a good person since he's a hero who got to keep his body upon death, but there's something mean-spirited about restraining someone, tickling them to complete hysterical while taunting them, and won't stop until the person breaks and submits to any demand. At the same time, he claims he was trying not to hurt Goku.
  • Insectoid Aliens: He's an alien based on a caterpillar.
  • Meaningful Name: He's name is Caterpy because he's a giant caterpillar.
  • Minor Injury Overreaction: He breaks into tears after Goku blasts him into the air, making Goku note how weak he is. This causes him to start the process of evolving into his ultimate form to get back at Goku. This costs him the match since he won't be hatching any time soon.
  • Mugging the Monster: The very idea that he thought he could use Tickle Torture to win a tournament with the best dead fighters in the universe shows that he badly underestimated his opponents.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: He lives up to his multi-armed status with ten arms to use for combat and being strong enough to put Goku into a full-body lock. His "dangerous" side...not so much.
  • One-Winged Angel: His 'ultimate' form...that we never got to see since he won't be hatching for a couple hundred years.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Completely Subverted. His eyes are the same shade as Pikkon, but he isn't dangerous at all....unless you count laughing yourself to death.
  • Rubber Man: He has the ability to stretch his arms like a rubber band. This is how he manages to catch a fleeing Goku since he wasn't expecting it.
  • Sadist: In a very light and soft way, but it's easy to tell that he enjoys himself when he's torturing Goku, especially with all the baby taunts.
  • Tickle Torture: He actually tries to beat Goku by tickling him into submission using his many arms to hold Goku in place and torture him. Most interesting is how well this works since Goku is literally helpless for several minutes before he finally blows Caterpy off of him.
  • Trash Talk: He teases and mocks Goku with baby talk while ordering him to give up since that's the only way to end the tickling.
  • Underestimating Badassery: This can only be assumed since he thought his method of fighting would lead him to victory.
  • Warm-Up Boss: Goku's first opponent in the Otherworld Tournament. He's pathetically weak but still manages to restrain Goku for a good amount of time as he tickled him. Once Goku gets his concentration back, however, the fight is over.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: His entire fighting style is dependent on exploiting this in his opponent. Hardened warriors who fought and even died defending their world, reduced to helpless children when tickled, and will do anything to make it stop.

A humanoid frog-like alien who fights Maraikoh in the quarterfinals during the tournament, a fight he knows that he's destined to lose. Still, he nearly beats Maraikoh by inflating his body and almost pushes him out of the ring. Maraikoh, however, throws him into a meteor and out of the ring.

  • Balloon Belly: He can inflate his belly to a gigantic size like a balloon.
  • Combat Pragmatist: He knows that there is no way he can beat Maraikoh in a physical fight. So, he tries to ring him out by rapidly inflating his body. He nearly succeeds, until Maraikoh throws him.
  • Do Not Go Gentle: Although he stands no chance against Maraikoh, he makes the dragon fighter work for his victory.
  • Frog Men: He's a humanoid frog-like alien.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is a reference to his frog-like appearance.
  • Rubber Man: He can rapidly inflate his body like a balloon.
  • Underestimating Badassery: He nearly beats Maraikoh, who is the superior fighter, because Maraikoh underestimated him because of his small size.

He is physically the strongest fighter from the southern quadrant since he is able to put somewhat of a resistance against Pikkon, although he loses quickly.

  • The Comically Serious: He takes his battles very seriously, which means he is thrown completely off guard when Tapkar decides to surrender due to him tiring himself out.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: He tries his best, but he's no match for Pikkon.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is a reference to his insectoid figure, which looks remarkably similar to Cell.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: He is quite strong, but has the bad luck of being matched with Pikkon who utterly outmatches him.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: He looks remarkably like Perfect Cell. They both have wings that do nothing, they're humanoid insects in design, and Torbie even have the same walk sound effects. He's basically Cell with a red color palette, no spots, and in the English dub, they even have the same voice actor.
  • Winged Humanoid: He has large wings like Cell, despite not needing them to fly.
  • Wings Do Nothing: Has large insect-like wings that are just there for decoration since he can fly using his energy like most characters in Z.

One of South Kai's prized pupils and the only one mentioned existing in the manga, albeit not seen in the flesh until the anime adaptation. He doesn't participate in the Otherworld Tournament due to his late arrival, then quickly backs out of entering the 25th World Tournament on Earth upon witnessing Goku's strength.

  • The Big Guy: Papoi towers over Goku and the Kais, and his master greatly values his strength. Unfortunately, his power is insufficient compared to the might of a Super Saiyan.
  • Canon Immigrant: South Kai brags about Papoi's strength during his brief cameo in the manga, but Papoi himself does not physically appear. His first full appearance is in the anime's Buu arc.
  • The Cavalry Arrives Late: For unexplained reasons, he did not make it to the Otherworld Tournament (justified as Akira Toriyama hadn't created him yet), leaving his combat prowess a mystery. In a "Toyotarō Drew It!" sketch, Toyotaro depicts him limbering up for the already finished tournament, oblivious to Goku, Pikkon, and Torbie celebrating on the victory podium in the background.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: He's slightly unnerved by Goku casually training with 1-tonne weights on each limb, but still confident that he could take the Saiyan on. That confidence is shattered when Goku goes Super Saiyan and North Kai challenges South Kai to increase the heaviness of the weights to 10-tonnes each, which Goku continues to carry with ease. Papoi wisely decides to back out of the World Tournament after that.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Papoi is presumably a strong warrior, but a casual demonstration of strength from Goku is enough to illustrate the difference between them.
  • The Quiet One: He doesn't say much in anime filler as South Kai speaks on his behalf, though his hammy expressions tell you all you need to know about his personality.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Despite being a minor character, Papoi exists to prove that Goku has surpassed all other warriors in the afterlife at this point, which comes up later in the Buu arc when Goku reveals that nobody there was strong enough to practice the Fusion Dance with him.
  • The Unreveal: We never see his supposedly magnificent strength in action. His other abilities, if he has any, are a complete mystery.
  • The Unseen: In the manga. His design comes from the anime.

East Kai's Fighters

These are the fighters who were trained by East Kai and participate the Otherworld Tournament. Her fighters are known for their exceptional speed, however, since her team seems to have the weakest fighters strength-wise, they tend to be Fragile Speedsters.

He is very fast, but he loses with ease to Olibu. Well, it's more like he defeated himself since he cloned himself into seven, all the clones rammed into themselves when Olibu dodged, and they knocked themselves out.

  • Confusion Fu: How he tries to beat Olibu. He uses his Self-Duplication on top of his extreme speed to try to confuse his opponent and attack during the chaos. Olibu dodges Chapuchai's attack, and all the clones ram into each other.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: He makes seven clones of himself to attack Olibu when he's off-guard.
  • Fragile Speedster: He goes down the moment his clones hit themselves.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: He's defeated by his own clones running into each other.
  • Self-Duplication: He can create duplicates of himself on top of having super speed to confuse his opponent. It, however, doesn't work on Olibu.
  • Super-Speed: Is extremely fast and can fool people that he's going even faster than he is by making clones of himself.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: He never wears a shirt.
  • Warm-Up Boss: He's this to Olibu since he gave him no real challenge and Olibu didn't even need to make contact with him to win.

He was the highest-ranking of all the Supreme Kais in Universe 7 long before the start of the series. After Kid Buu absorbed South Supreme Kai to become the even more powerful Buff Buu, he attacked Buu to save the East Supreme Kai's life. This gets him absorbed and transforms Buu into the weaker and more docile Fat Buu.

  • Ascended Extra: He goes from being a one-shot Posthumous Character in Z to taking over Fat Buu and becoming a major character in the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga in the Super manga.
  • Assimilation Backfire: Majin Buu absorbing him ended up making the demon weaker and docile, indirectly saving the universe.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Zigzagged. Although he was very powerful to the point of being able to hurt Majin Buu in some way and was the leader of the U7 Supreme Kais, the strongest of them was South Supreme Kai. Justified: he originally was far stronger than South Supreme Kai, but sacrificed most of his power to seal away Moro.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He was called peaceful and fun-loving by East Supreme Kai, and he had a breath attack that could chop a person into pieces. He also fought and imprisoned Moro.
  • Big Fun: Is described by East Supreme Kai as a fun-loving, happy person who valued peace. It's these aspects that morphed Majin Buu into Fat Buu. Shin, however, thinks he probably wasn't very bright for not fusing with South Kai to stop Majin Buu.
Gowasu: By the way, how didn't you know of the Potara time limit? I'm sure your master told you about it...
Shin: It's because Grand Supreme Kai was a lax person... No. Perhaps he didn't even know that they could be used for fusing in the first place. He fought Majin Buu without fusing and got absorbed...
    Future Trunks: ...
  • Big Good: He was the leader of all the Supreme Kais in Universe 7 and was the reason why Majin Buu became the playful Fat Buu.
  • Breath Weapon: Had one of the most powerful breath attacks in the franchise. With a signal breath, he cut Buff Buu apart before blowing him up, which would have killed anyone who wasn't Buu.
  • The Conscience: He's an indirect version for Buu. After Buu absorbed him is when he became Fat Buu, the White Sheep among Buu's various pre-Uub forms (and the only one that could pull a Heel–Face Turn). However, Shin states in an extra of the Super manga that the Grand Supreme Kai wasn't probably very bright, as he didn't fuse with the South Kai to defend himself from Buu.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Due to Dragon Ball Super introducing names to the Supreme Kai, the fallen Kais real names are unknown.
  • Godzilla Threshold: He realized there was no chance of him and South Supreme Kai beating Moro and they couldn't win, so he resorts to using a technique that sacrificed most of his godly power to seal Moro away. He outright admits the attack is too dangerous to teach anyone else and only uses it when he has no choice.
  • Heroic Sacrifice:
    • It is speculated by East Supreme Kai that he allowed himself to be absorbed by Buu in an effort to give the unrepentant demon a Morality Chain. Although Buu was still violent and Bibidi easily manipulated him to do his bidding, his efforts did save the universe. Buu became far more tamed, not as powerful as before, and later redeemed by Mr. Satan.
    • He did so far earlier in the battle with Moro: he and South Supreme Kai were struggling to survive against Moro, so he ultimately permanently sacrifices most of his power to seal Moro away.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: When other Supreme Kais (Southern Supreme Kai) or even other pure-hearted individuals (Gohan, Goten, arguably Piccolo) were absorbed, they made Buu smarter and stronger, but had no effect on his morality. The Grand Supreme Kai alone was able to change Buu's personality for the better, speaking to a staggering amount of inherent benevolence.
  • Morality Chain: Whether by accident or design, he became this to Majin Buu once he was absorbed. By taming Buu, he became less powerful and more reasonable, giving Mr. Satan the chance to eventually redeem him and break Bidibi and Babidi's influence.
  • Physical God: Not only was he a Supreme Kai, but he was the head god of all of them in U7 and the second strongest after South Supreme Kai. With a single breath attack, he managed to chop Buff Buu into pieces and blow him up. He used to be much stronger, but permanently sacrificed most of his power to seal Moro away.
  • Power Limiter: Became this to Majin Buu. Because of his pure goodness and benevolence, he weakened Buu and made him easier to control. At least until Buu's Superpowered Evil Side takes over.
  • Retcon:
    • The reason he exists (or more accurately, the reason why his appearance and personality exist). In Shin's original explanation, the fat Majin Buu was the original one, and all four of the other Supreme Kais were killed by him. Towards the end of the Buu arc, Shin quietly revises what he said and instead says that only two (West and North) were killed, the two others (Grand and South) were absorbed instead, that this gave birth to the fat form everyone saw, and that his real original form is Kid Buu. This also meant that Super Buu, who was originally meant to be the same guy as Fat Buu and was treated as such, was retconned into being modeled after the South Supreme Kai rather than him being another aspect of Buu's nature.
    • Despite being Beerus' opposite number, he didn't seem to have anywhere near the same level of power. This is addressed in the Moro arc, where it's shown that he probably was closer to that tier in the past but had to sacrifice most of his powers to seal away Moro's magic.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He's the reason why Fat Buu exists. Without him, Buu would've remained the powerful Buff Buu, giving the Z-Fighters almost no chance of surviving once he's revived on Earth.note  It is through his goodness that Fat Buu is able to accept Mr. Satan as a friend and changes into a good person. He's also the one who originally sealed Moro away.
  • Super-Breath: His breath attack that he uses to tear Buff Buu apart.
  • Top God: He was the leader of the Supreme Kais in Universe 7, although he wasn't the strongest. That title goes to South Supreme Kai. He used to be the strongest, but he sacrificed most of his divine power to seal away the immensely powerful Planet Eater Moro.
  • Voodoo Shark: Grand Supreme Kai is revealed as being able to awaken inside Buu multiple times, helps the heroes a few times and provides an exposition on Moro, and adds some world-building. The problem is, Buu's absorption technique doesn't work like this, and if it did, that brings up the question as to why he couldn't do so earlier. As well as why couldn't the South Supreme Kai do the same? They were both protectors and good friends of Shin, so why does Moro awaken one kai but neither awaken when seeing the menace who similarly threatened their universe? And what exactly stops the Grand Supreme Kai from existing constantly? And so on and so forth.
  • Worf Had the Flu: He could've beaten Buu, likely easily, had he not sacrificed most of his power to seal away Moro (a threat even greater than Buu and capable of delivering a Curb-Stomp Battle to both him and South Supreme Kai at the same time) much earlier.

The Supreme Kai who watched over the southern quadrant under the direction of the Grand Supreme Kai. He was the strongest Supreme Kai in Universe 7 and the only Kai able to fight and even hurt Kid Buu. His strength got him absorbed by Buu, who transformed into the mighty Buff Buu.

  • The Ace: He was far and away the strongest Supreme Kai seen in the series until Zamasu stole Goku's body and later fused with an alternate version of himself using the Potara earrings. He was the only one able to hurt Kid Buu, who easily killed West and North Supreme Kai, and only lost when absorbed by surprise. In comparison, only Super Saiyan 3 Goku, Ultimate Gohan, and Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks managed the same feat. He's also the only Supreme Kai shown who stood with the Grand Supreme Kai against Moro.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: In the anime filler, we see South Supreme Kai humorously fall off a cliff while chasing after West Supreme Kai who'd snatched his lunch. He's also the strongest of them all and managed to put up a fight against Kid Buu who easily stomped the other Supreme Kais, even physically ripping off his arm at one point.
  • Blood Knight: Implied, as he was the only one of the Kais to train for combat, he smirks while fighting Kid Buu, and Super Buu (who is modeled after him) very much enjoys a good fight.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Due to Dragon Ball Super introducing names to the Supreme Kai, the fallen Kais real names are unknown.
  • Mighty Glacier: He's stated to have been big and burly. While he's hardly slow, his size is indicated in his filler fight with Kid Buu to be something of a detriment. He was shown to possess power rivaling Buu's, but Buu's small size and maneuverability relative to him means that the latter still gains a decisive advantage.
  • Physical God: The mightiest Supreme Kai seen in the series until the introduction of Zamasu (though the Grand Supreme Kai was stronger originally before sacrificing most of his power to seal away Moro). He was able to fight and hurt Kid Buu, making his power rival Super Saiyan 3 Goku from the Buu Saga.
  • Posthumous Character: He's been dead for millions of years by the time of the manga, permanently absorbed by Buu. The only hints as to what he was like come in the form of Super Buu's personality, as his height and physique heavily imply that this form of Buu is modeled after him.
  • Reused Character Design: As a tall, muscular ginger man with a mohawk haircut, he greatly resembles Android 16 except for the Kai robes, a wider jawline, and pointed ears.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He has a one-panel appearance in the manga and a two-minute appearance in the anime, but he's the reason that Super Buu even exists.
  • Top God: He was a Supreme Kai who oversaw the southern quadrant and the strongest of them all in Universe 7 after the Grand Supreme Kai sacrificed most of his power to defeat Moro.

He was one of the rulers of Universe 7 who overlooked the northern quadrant of the universe under the Grand Supreme Kai, as well as an excellent swordsman. He was the second to be killed by Kid Buu during his original rampage.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's shown joyfully fishing in his first scene but later doesn't hesitate to cut Buu with his blade, even if it didn't work.
  • Canon Immigrant: Sorta. He's never seen in the manga, so his design is completely created by Toei. However, he was mentioned in the manga as being killed by Buu during his original rampage, just like in the anime.
  • Cool Old Guy: He's seemingly the eldest of the then generation of Supreme Kais but is no less willing to take up arms against Majin Buu, even managing to cut the monster in two. Unfortunately for him, slicing Buu in half barely annoys him.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Due to Dragon Ball Super introducing names to the Supreme Kai, the fallen Kais real names are unknown.
  • Master Swordsman: He was handy with a sword and used it during his battle against Kid Buu. He still lost badly despite his efforts. It's implied that he tried and failed to free the Z-sword sometime before his death (as Kibito's wordingnote  implies at least one Kai in addition to Shin tried but not all five, and filler depicts him with a sword).
  • Physical God: He's a Supreme Kai who was many times stronger than most mortals and was a capable swordsman. However, he was nothing compared to Buu.
  • Single-Stroke Battle: Buu kills him in the filler flashback with one small ki blast.
  • Top God: A Supreme Kai who watched and guided over the northern quadrant under the supervision of the Grand Supreme Kai.

She was the ruler of the western quadrant of Universe 7 under the guidance of the Grand Supreme Kai. She's the only female Supreme Kai and only one of two female Kais ever seen in the series. She's the first to be killed by Kid Buu.

  • Action Girl: She fought Kid Buu in combat. Although she stood no chance against the demon and was killed quickly, you got to give her props for trying.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Her introductory scene shows her mischievous side in snatching South Supreme Kai's food and comedically luring him over a cliffside. That same prankster later is shown viciously brawling against Majin Buu without a hint of lightheartedness.
  • Canon Immigrant: Sorta. She is never seen in the manga, so her design is completely created by Toei. However, she was mentioned in the manga as being killed by Buu during his original rampage, just like in the anime.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Due to Dragon Ball Super introducing names to the Supreme Kai, the fallen Kais real names are unknown. Some fan works imagine her name was Lila, but this is pure speculation on their part.
  • Physical Goddess: She's a Supreme Kai who was many times stronger than most mortals outside of the adult Saiyans during the Buu Saga. However, she was utterly no match for Kid Buu.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Neither the North nor the West Supreme Kai's gender was specified by Shin in the manga, meaning the anime's depiction of the West Kai as a female was all Toei's doing.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She is the only female Supreme Kai in Universe 7 and only the second female Kai after East Kai.
  • Top God: One of the Supreme Kais who watched over the Universe 7 and personally looked over the western quadrant.
  • World's Strongest Woman: As the only female Supreme Kai, and explicitly much more powerful than Shin (who was stronger than Piccolo), she was the most powerful woman in the universe when she was alive.

Miscellaneous

    The Demon Realm's Race

The Demon Realm's Race (魔界の種族, Makai no Shuzoku)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/xeno_dabura_and_towa.png
The King of the Demon Realm, Dabura, and his sister Towa.

The Demon Realm race are a race that dwells within the Demon Realm (魔界, Makai), a dimension separated from the main mortal universe, located on the opposite side of their dimension. It is the birthplace of Dabura, king of the realm, who was brainwashed by Babidi to do his bidding three hundred years before the Majin Buu saga. According to Xenoverse, it was created by evil wizards like Demigra millions of years ago. The Demon Realm was sealed sometime after the events of Dragon Ball Z, with Towa deciding to revive it along with Mira.

The Demon Realm is a pretty interesting place, as it's a pretty minor thing in the canon series, but its inhabitants became the main antagonists in many of the video games, including Dragon Ball Online, Dragon Ball Xenoverse and Dragon Ball Heroes.

  • Ascended Extra: The Demon Realm is purely stated to be the place of origin of Dabura, but never takes relevance in the manga or anime. However, the entirety of the realm became the main villains of the videogames from Dragon Ball Online to Dragon Ball Xenoverse and Dragon Ball Heroes thanks to Towa, Dabura's sister.
  • Always Chaotic Evil: The Demon Realm is stated to be a place where only the wicked and corrupted exist. When Dabura was killed, King Yemma sent him to Heaven because Hell would feel too much like home. According to information, this place is ruled by dark counterparts from the Supreme Kai.
  • Evil Counterpart Race: According to the Super Guide, evil Core People born from the Kaiju are sent to the Demon Realm to rule over it. They are named Makaioshin, or Demon Realm Supreme Kai, and rule over the Makaio, or Demon Kai, the equivalent of evil King Kais, and the demons.
  • Hell: Averted. The Demon Realm and Hell are pretty different places, but we won't blame you if you think they are the same place. King Yemma thought that sending Dabura to Hell would feel like sending him home.
  • The Ghost: The Entire Realm and its inhabitants are never seen in the manga outside of Dabura's and maybe Devilman, but the Demon Kai and Demon Supreme Kai never appear in video games outside of the manual.
  • Out of Focus: Played With. While Towa, Mira, Fu and Dabura all get significant focus in suplimental materials, the specifics of the actual species of Demon and Demon Realm in general is largely up in the air. The only consistent portrayal so far is their affinity for magic carries across all known members.
  • Token Wizard: In a sense. One of two species use magic as their hat, the other being Kais. But of the two, the Demon Realm's members seem to use magic much more often.
  • World's Strongest Man: Dabura was the strongest demon, and ruled over the Demon Realm. He is stated to be as strong as Perfect Cell. After his death, he was succeeded by Mira, an artificial demon created by Towa combining the genes of many species, which surpassed him by a large margin.

    The Majins

Majin (魔人, "Djinn")

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/majins.png
A race whose first known member was Majin Buu, who has existed since time immemorial under the magic of Bibidi and his doppelganger, Babidi. After the events of Dragon Ball Z, Majin Buu spawned a wife for him due to reading an erotic novel owned by Mister Satan. The race grew considerably weaker by each passing generation, making the Majin descendants weak enough to be considered as powerful as normal Earthlings.

Unlike the other examples, the Majin race is a post-manga creation created for the video games of Dragon Ball Online and Dragon Ball Xenoverse, and is pretty likely not existing in canon any time soon.

  • Adam and Eve Plot: In the beginning, there was only Majin Buu. Toriyama, feeling he was lonely, decided to give him a companion, thus, giving him an erotic novel owned by Mister Satan, Buu grew curious and a female was born out of him. And Toriyama thought it was hilarious. And with love beams, the two of them spawned a child, and then many, many other children.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: They can be of any color. They can be pink like the original Buu, blue like Miss Buu, or gray like the evil side of Majin Buu.
  • Cute Monster Girl: Almost all the female Majins seen are cute looking.
  • Generation Xerox: All male Majins resemble Majin Buu, all female Majins resemble Miss Buu. Additionally, their pure forms are exact duplicates of Kid Buu, as Kid Buu is the basic slate of Majins as a whole.

The Keeper of the Furnace of Eight Divisions, which keeps the demons from escaping into Earth. Goku first meets her when he is trying to put out the flames that are threatening Ox-King. She also has an assistant, Grandpa Son Gohan.

  • Adaptational Heroism: The character from Journey to the West that Annin is based on, Taishang Laojun, wanted to kill Sun Wukong by putting him inside a mystical furnace.
  • Ascended Extra: Annin is one of the few filler characters to be playable in Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle.
  • Berserk Button: Gets very angry when Goku calls her ancient. According to Grandpa Gohan, she also gets quite angry when her noodles are not ready.
  • Blow You Away: When in her giant form, Annin can create gales using her cape.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: While Goku is correct that Ox-King and his village are threatened by the flames of the furnace, Annin points out that turning it off would allow the demons to escape into the world of the living.
  • Canon Foreigner: Was created for the anime.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Despite Otherworld eventually becoming a major part of Dragon Ball, Annin has never shown up or been mentioned since her initial appearance.
  • Edible Theme Naming: Her name comes from Annin Tofu, a Chinese dessert made with almond milk.
  • Expy: As stated above, Annin is based on Taishang Laojun from Journey to the West.
  • Last Episode, New Character: Appears right at the tail-end of the original Dragon Ball anime.
  • Really 700 Years Old: According to Grandpa Gohan, Annin has been around for at least 10,000 years.
  • Ship Tease: It is inferred in her sole appearance that Gohan may have the hots for Annin, with Goku teasingly telling his grandfather to "take good care of her" just before he departs.
  • Sizeshifter: Annin has the ability to change her size.

A towering ogre who acts as the judge for all souls passing to the Other World. Yemma sits at an appropriately enormous desk in his palace's office from which he files paperwork as he determines whether to send each dead person's soul to Heaven or Hell.

  • Badass Boast: Yemma proudly claims to have beaten Raditz into submission when the Saiyan warrior arrived to be judged upon his death. While only a mid-ranked warrior, Raditz was by far the strongest opponent Goku had faced at that point. Impressed, Goku is almost tempted to let Yemma train him rather than King Kai. Though considering that Raditz probably wasn't allowed to keep his body after death (Goku was a rare exception thanks to his heroic feats on Earth and his connection to Kami), this boast may not be as impressive in practice.
  • Big Red Devil: Has the overall appearance of one (although he is more inspired by oni from Japanese mythology, crossed with the Hindu-Buddhist god of death, Yama) befitting his role as a psychopomp of sorts, but he is actually an amiable fellow.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: He strategically decides to keep Vegeta waiting in the Check-In Station with an in-tact body rather than immediately sending him to Hell since he figures that Vegeta can still be sent back to Earth as a backup in case Gohan and the others fail against Majin Buu. This decision single-handedly saves the cosmos, as Goku desperately needed another Saiyan to fuse with.
    • Similarly, Uub owes his entire existence to Yemma. Yemma listened to Goku's wish for Buu to be reincarnated as a good guy. And like Vegeta, Uub later plays a vital role in saving the galaxy from a spacefaring monster (against Baby in GT or against Moro in Super).
  • God Job: Similar to Kami, his role is treated more like a mundane vocation that he just so happened to have been appointed to rather than a divine burden and in Super he implies that there are many other "Check-In Station" judges who preside over different quadrants of the galaxies, much like the Kais. Although with Yemma it is particularly exaggerated, what with his Salaryman appearance, office-styled abode, and the fact that he transports souls by literally stamping papers.
  • Judgement of the Dead: King Yemma's duty is to decide where newly arriving souls go once they die, stamping their paperwork and sending them off to either Heaven or Hell.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Shortly prior to Goku's arrival in the Check-In Station, Yemma claims to have kicked Raditz's ass when the Saiyan started acting up.
  • Pals with Jesus: As with many other powerful beings beyond the mortal plane, Goku is on casual speaking terms with him.
  • Public Domain Character: Of all the deities in the Dragon Ball franchise, Yemma is the only one Akira Toriyama didn't create himself. He is adapted from the Buddhist judge of the dead in Hell and the Underworld.
  • Riddle for the Ages: How he is able to ensure that more powerful villains who die on his watch end up being sentenced properly without making a scene like Raditz purportedly did? We only see him sentencing Cell to Hell via a portal of some kind in the Otherworld Tournament filler arc with no elaboration on how else he was able to keep the monster in line. Later still, in GT's Super 17 Saga when all the villains are killed and sent back to Hell, at worst, Yemma seems to be more annoyed than anything else at all the paperwork he has to cover.
    • Much of this is confused and obfuscated by anime-only filler. In the original story, it's established that only exceptional heroes like Goku are allowed to keep their bodies after death. The various dead villains likely do not arrive at Yemma's in physical bodies, but rather as faceless soul whisps like the many others waiting in line.
  • So Last Season: Him overpowering Raditz in the afterlife, who at the time was known for manhandling Goku and Piccolo (the strongest two men on Earth), quickly becomes this when King Kai later reveals that Raditz's partners are even stronger than him. Goku quickly surpasses King Kai during the course of their training together which diminishes Yemma's feat even more.
  • Troll: Besides literally being one, he isn't above jokes and jibes despite his lofty position, as seen when he teasingly threatens to send Kami to Hell for speaking out of turn.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: It's not seen, but Fortuneteller Baba alludes to him breaking out "the Yemma Lock" on rebellious souls.
  • Your Size May Vary: He is an absolute giant, but his sole appearance in Super made him quite small compared with his previous appearances.

    Bubbles

Bubbles (バブルス, Baburusu)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bubbles_artwork.png
Voiced by (Japanese): Naoki Tatsuta (Z), Takahiro Fujimoto (Kai and Super)
Voiced by (English): Doug Parker (Z Season 1-2), Don Brown (Z Season 4-5) (Ocean dub); Christopher Sabat (Funimation dub)
Voiced by (Latin American Spanish): Ernesto Lezama, Javier Olguín (Kai)

King Kai's pet monkey.

  • The Cameo: Bubbles makes one final appearance in the original manga when King Kai contacts Vegeta during the Kid Buu fight and allows him to speak to the populace of Earth to get them to give their energy to Goku's Spirit Bomb. The anime version excludes him as he and Gregory were left behind earlier with King Yemma after Goku and King Kai departed for the Grand Kai's World.
  • Fetch Quest: One of King Kai's conditions for training someone is that they have to be able to catch Bubbles. Considering that King Kai's planet has much stronger gravity than Earth, this task is harder than it would seem.
  • Mistaken Identity: Goku mistakes him for King Kai when they first meet.
  • Pointy Ears: Is a monkey with pointed ears, like the Saiyan Great Ape form.
  • Put on a Bus: In the Other World Tournament filler, he and Gregory are left behind at the Check-In Station when Goku and King Kai depart for the Grand Kai's planet and that is the last we see of them until GT. Bubbles' cameo when King Kai allows Vegeta to speak to the Earth's people during the final fight with Kid Buu is thus excised from the anime adaptation.
  • Shapeshifting: In Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butōden, Bubbles has the ability to transform into children characters like Gohan and Goten.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Looks like an ordinary primate but he is accustomed to King Kai's planet's higher gravity, being able to run and leap about with ease. When Goku first arrived on the planet, he could barely walk. This means that Bubbles was actually stronger than Goku when they first met in the early Saiyan Saga, as confirmed by at least one guidebook.
  • Tuckerization: Bubbles' name is most likely a reference to Michael Jackson's pet chimp which had the same name.

    Gregory

Voiced by (Japanese): Yūji Mitsuya (Z), Yusuke Numata (Kai and Super)
Voiced by (English): Alvin Sanders (Ocean dub); Chris Cason (Z Season 3, originally), John Burgmeier (Z Season 4 and onwards) (Funimation dub); Spike Spencer (Bang Zoom!/Toonami Asia dub in Super)

A cricket sprite who lives on King Kai's Planet and acts as his butler.

  • Canon Immigrant: Was created for the anime adaptation of Dragon Ball Z but eventually also appears in the manga adaptation of the Anime First Dragon Ball Super, still living on King Kai's planet.
  • Cranial Eruption: He gets a bump on the head after getting hit on the head with a hammer by Goku.
  • I Am Not Weasel: Goku mistakes him for a grasshopper when he first meets Gregory.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He may trash-talk everyone, except King Kai, however, he is polite and does respect those who beat him.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Claims to be the strongest fighter ever when we first meet him.
  • Shout-Out: His name could be a reference to the main character of Franz Kafka's book The Metamorphosis, who gets turned into an insect.
  • Super-Speed: One of the tests on King Kai’s Planet is to catch him and smack him on the head with a hammer.
  • Vocal Evolution: John Burgmeier started out giving Gregory a loudmouthed high-pitched voice in Z but his performance in Kai and onwards is pitched up via a filter to make it sound closer to the Japanese performance.

    Kibito

Kibito (キビト)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kibito_artwork.png
Voiced by (Japanese): Shin Aomori
Voiced by (English): Chuck Huber (Funimation dub); Don Brown (Ocean dub)
Voiced by (Latin American Spanish): José Luis Castañeda, Humberto Solórzano (Kai The Final Chapters and Super)

The servant and aid of the four Supreme Kais. After most of them were killed by Majin Buu, Kibito became the Eastern Supreme Kai's personal bodyguard. He goes to Earth with the Supreme Kai to help stop Babadi from reviving Majin Buu and ends up permanently fusing with him in the process, until they use the Dragon Balls to separate in Super.

  • Amazing Technicolor Population: He has reddish skin. In the coloured manga chapters, his skin is instead a deep blue.
  • Ascended Extra: He was Demoted to Extra in the Super anime, but he appeared prominently in the manga version of the Future Trunks arc. He spars with Zamasu in his introduction and serves a vital role in informing Beerus and the Z-Warriors about Zamasu's suspicious attitude towards Zuno. He also served as a sort of Comic Relief due to Beerus accusing him of being Goku Black because Shin referenced Kibito's famous prejudice against mortals. He disappears in the manga after that but appears during the exhibition matches of the Universal Survival Arc in the anime.
  • Battle Butler: Is this for the Supreme Kai before fusing with him. Though until the Super manga, he doesn't get much of a chance to show his mettle on the battlefield.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Not that the Kai was a slouch in the fighting department. In fact, the Supreme Kai is stronger than him.
  • The Bus Came Back: In a sense. After being permanently fused with his master partway in the Buu saga in Z and being released prior to the Universe 7 vs. Universe 6 tournament, they separated using the Namekian Dragon Balls. Then he became Demoted to Extra.
  • The Big Guy: Served as one briefly, but Dabura kills him instantly when he spots him.
  • Death Is Cheap: One of the more egregious examples in the franchise. He's unceremoniously murdered in one shot by Dabura before the heroes even enter Babidi's spaceship, only to be revived by the Dragon Balls a few chapters/episodes later.
  • Demoted to Extra: Since his return as an individual character, he hasn't been seen much, compared with both Supreme Kais. The manga version of the Future Trunks saga treated him a little better, only to disappear in the next saga, while he goes along Universe 7 to the exhibition matches in the anime, only to remain on the World of the Kai.
  • Face of a Thug: He looks pretty haggard and scary, but he is firmly on the side of good. However, Kibito's "suspicious face" causes Beerus to suspect him of being the true identity of Goku Black.
  • Healing Hands: Uses them to heal Gohan and Supreme Kai who were close to death after fighting Buu. The Super manga reveals this is an ability all Supreme Kai disciples and attendants share.
  • Informed Attribute: Gohan comments that he'd be a difficult fight without Super Saiyan (hence why he transforms), and Daizenshuu 7 states that his power level is close to that of Gohan's base form. We never do see him fight; probably because even that normally impressive level is totally irrelevant by the point he appears, and any being who does have reason to fight him (e.g. Dabra in the Buu arc, Zamasu in the Super manga) can obliterate him with ease.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Kibito gives Gohan quite a hard time and underestimates the boy at every turn. He's vocally uncomfortable with the idea of even allowing Gohan to walk upon the Sacred Land of the Kais, in spite of the severity of the circumstances with Majin Buu. However, over the course of the Buu arc, Kibito warms up to Gohan and begrudgingly comes to respect his superior talent. After teleporting him back to Earth, Kibito gifts Gohan with a copy of his father's orange gi for luck in his upcoming fight against Buu.
  • Noble Bigot: Kibito is quite prejudiced and condescending towards mortals, believing that no mortal should even set foot on the Kaioshin Realm. He underestimates the potential of Saiyans, scoffing at the notion of Gohan being able to lift the Z-Sword when hundreds of generations of Shin-jin had failed to do so. He is promptly forced to eat his words.
    • His mild racism becomes a surprisingly major plot point in the manga. When Goku, Beerus and Whis question if Shin has encountered any gods with "extremist ideologies" lately, rather than thinking of Zamasu, Kibito is the first that springs to Shin's mind (Shin had no idea about the Goku Black situation). Humorously, Beerus immediately hones in on Kibito as the prime suspect of Goku Black's true identity.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: He's a Physical God, being the Supreme Kai's attendant. That said, even in his rusty state, Gohan far outclasses him. Lampshaded by their respective attempts at wielding the Z-Sword; Gohan had difficulty initially, but Kibito couldn't even lift it off the ground.
  • Put on a Bus: In a sense. He unwittingly helps demonstrate the fusion ability of the potara not realizing the fusion would be permanent. Shin's personality is completely dominant in the new Kibito Kai making Kibito functionally cease to exist as an individual.
  • The Stoic: He rarely changes his expression, outside of shock and surprise. Once Old Kai appears, he shares a comical duo with the Supreme Kai until they both merge.
  • Teleportation: He can perform Kai Kai, which allows him to teleport to any world in the lower realm and even different universes. Unlike Goku's Instant Transmission, Kibito's teleportation has no limits. Initially, only he demonstrated this ability, before it seemingly rubbed off on Shin after their fusion.
