Eddsworld is a British webtoon and webcomic created by Edd Gould that has been running since 2004. Its Newgrounds page can be found here, its YouTube channel can be found here, and its DeviantArt page containing all of the EW comics can be found here.

The series follows the lives of four (later, just three) characters:

• Edd, the eponymous, cola and bacon-obsessed artist.
• Matt, the square-chinned, vain ginger.
• Tom, the sarcastic, eyeless alcoholic.
• Tord, the Trigger-Happy Norwegian (until he was Put on a Bus).

"Eddisodes" are released sporadically and follow no real story arc, instead usually following the characters as they get involved in strange adventures including — in no particular order — zombies, evil zombie Santa, mummies, future counterparts, talking lemons, clones, and Canadians, among other things. Dark, weird, slapstick-heavy hilarity ensues.

After a long battle with cancer, Gould died on March 25, 2012. His passing sparked a heavy reaction from the animation community, and many works have been made in tribute to him, including a collaboration project between many major web animators. The final Eddisode voiced and animated by Edd ("Space Face, Part 1") was released on June 2nd, 2012.

The show continued afterwards, produced by Tom's voice actor Thomas "TomSka" Ridgewell and animated by various artists, most significantly through Eddsworld: Legacy, a successful fundraiser released almost a week after "Space Face, Part 1" with the purpose of continuing production of the series. (Well, successful aside from the controversy that brewed after there was considerable trouble getting perks out due to the overwhelming demand, with some apparently not getting anything after a year and a half.) The series had some issues picking itself up thereafter following Gould's death, and Tom ultimately stepped down from his title of showrunner following the release of "The End" (the Grand Finale of Legacy), relinquishing the reins of the series to Gould's family.

Gould's mother later confirmed that she would become the new showrunner in the future, meaning that Edd's world would keep on spinning after all. In 2017, the Eddsworld webcomic was revived, with Matt Hargreaves (the voice of Matt) writing and drawing the strip. On August 1st, 2020, the Eddsworld animations (with a new team led by Matt) were announced to return along with the launch of a Patreon page.

Tropes A-F

• Abnormal Allergy: In the episode "Space Face (Part 2)", Matt claims to be allergic to explosions.
• Acoustic License: Averted in "Zanta Claws III". The Evil Director attempts to tell Zanta Claws to consider his debt repaid, but Zanta could not hear him over the noise of the helicopter.
• Adaptational Dye-Job: In real life, Tord Larsson has blonde hair, but in the show, his character has black hair from 2004-2005 and brown hair from 2005 onwards.
• Aliens Are Bastards: Double subverted in "Space Face"; Matt is at first terrified of being eaten by their abductors, but is reassured by the aliens' seemingly-benevolent nature, with the Commander giving them a full tour of the ship. However, as soon as the aliens get their use out of the boys, they attempt to eject them into space through the garbage disposal.
• Alternate History: In "WTFuture", Matt goes back in time and makes it so he founds, invents, and rules everything. He even edits history in the present, so that he remains the founder, ruler, and inventor of everything.
• Ambiguous Time Period: Some of the older Eddisodes did feature references to the time periods they were made, such as the old Google homepage appearing in "Hello Hellhole" (released in January 2007), the YouTube video seen in "MovieMakers" having an upload date of January 22, 2009 - a little less than three months before it was published - and Future Edd in WTFuture traveling back in time to 2005 and witnessing the events of "Zombeh Attack", which was made that same year. After that, the episodes don't really have any date settings other than the meta ones, meaning that every Eddisode from 2010 onwards could actually take place in the span of a few months or years only.
• Anachronism Stew: For some reason, the British Army uses Kalashnikovs and American helicopters, as seen in "Moving Targets".
• And This Is for...: Matt while slamming the buttons on a control panel for Tord's mech.
  Matt: This is for the house. This is for my friend! And THIS... IS FOR MY FACE!
• Animesque:
  • The titular character of "Dudette Next Door" is drawn this way. And so is her girlfriend.
  • "Saloonatics" displays some anime-ish expressions, especially from Edd/Edward Gold.
• Arc Words: "Everybody needs a little something" in "Saloonatics".
• Art Evolution: Earlier animations were very blocky, but the art style became more smooth with each new animation.
• Art Shift:
  • During Eddsworld: Legacy, the show was animated by various people, each of them with a somewhat different style. Averted in Beyond where the art style is consistent and is closer to Edd's in his later animations.
  • The show enjoys switching back to the art style of older episodes whenever a past event is shown. It pops up in both "WTFuture" (when Future Edd travels back in time to an earlier episode) and "The End (Part 1)" (when showing Tord's in-universe departure).
  • "PowerEdd" has an interesting and subtle example: Edd flashes back to when he and Eduardo were at school, and the flashback is animated in a pastiche of the real Edd's old style. Child!Edd also presents a drawing that resembles the real Edd's early art style.
• Asbestos-Free Cereal: Almost a literal example. In "The End: Part 1", we can see a box of Eddsworld Cereals (which is also a Running Gag) with a disclaimer on its side saying "Now with real cereal".
• Author Appeal: There are at least six films dealing with zombie apocalypses.
• Author Avatar: All the main characters are named after, voiced by (with the exception of Edd as of later episodes, Tord in "The End", and Tom in all Beyond episodes), and vaguely based off the creator and his friends.
• Bad "Bad Acting": "Not Matt" auditioning for the role of Matt in Casting Call.
• Bad Future: Played with; the Edd from the future in "WTFuture" sees it as a bad future because Coke's been banned. Tom and Matt seem just fine with the future, though Tom has cancer and Matt has cybernetic implants replacing his eye and chin, so they clearly didn't get on completely unscathed. It's also subtly implied that Tord might have succeeded at taking over the world in this future, though it's not clear if he's still evil.
• Bad Santa: Zanta Claws, a zombie Santa. Fortunately, the real Santa also exists. It turns out that Zanta was the old Santa, and that after he died, real Santa took his place.
• Bait-and-Switch: Many of the jokes in the pre-legacy era relied on this before it got more serious. An example is when Tord falls onto one side of a see-saw with the rest of the gang falls onto the other, but breaks it, only for Tord to get crushed by a hippo. Tom's Tales of Awesomeness is the best example.
• Beach Episode: The "Surf and Turf Wars" two-parter is about the boys going to the beach due to the immense heat in town.
• Be Careful What You Wish For: In "The End: Part 1", Eduardo, annoyed at Jon, says to him "I wish you were dead." In Part 2, Jon dies after Tord fires a rocket at Eduardo's house. He doesn't take it well.
• Berserk Button: Tom loves Smirnoff, but God help you if you give him Diet Smirnoff.
• Big Ol' Unibrow: Tom used to have one.
• Bittersweet Ending: The ending of the Legacy era of Eddsworld concluded with... well, "The End": The boys survive and Tom is able to take down Tord completely, but they've lost their home with the only convenient thing that they can do is that they all move into Tom's newly made home. Tord also seems to reflect near the end that he's now not just lost his big robot to Take Over the World, but lost the only people he truly considered friends.
• The Blank: In Comic 82: Ignored. Lampshaded when Tom asks how Edd and Matt can breathe.
• Bonus Stage: Parodied in Not-So-Special Stage, where it's the entire game.
• Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: During Tom's house-hunting montage in "The End (Part 2)", he rejects, in order, a room full of ghosts, a room that's on fire, and a room full of ghosts that also is on fire.
• Brick Joke:
  • Edd smashes Tom's bass in "Ruined". It's referenced two times in future episodes that release a good deal later.
  • In "Zanta Claws", Edd says he thought the real Santa died centuries ago, only to meet what is apparently Santa at the end. In "Zanta Claws III", Zanta offhandedly reveals he was the original Santa when he was alive.
  • In "The End (Part 1)", Edd tells Tom he had already told him about Tord returning, to which we cut to earlier that week, where Edd told him with a mouth full of cereal so Tom couldn't actually hear what he was saying. In "The End (Part 2)", Edd and Matt ask Tom why his eyes are black. He begins to tell them while eating popcorn, muddling his words so they (and the audience) can't understand what he's saying.
• The Bus Came Back: Tord returns in "The End", after having left the show in "25 ft. Under the Seat". And not just him, either—we also get cameos from various one-shot characters, including Commander Bai and his crew, one of the actors Shoe interviewed in "MovieMakers", the Evil Director and his assistant, Kim and Katya, etc.
• Butt-Monkey: Tom and Matt end up on the receiving end of a lot of abuse in the cartoons, although Matt may arguably get it worse because it's obvious Edd and Tom don't like him, though Edd got along better with Matt by the "Legacy" episodes.
  • All of the main cast counts as this, due to how many times they've died.
  • Arguably, Tom was the bigger buttmonkey prior to Tord's departure (seen most clearly in "Spares" when the gang decide they would rather have two versions of Matt than one version of Tom), but afterwards this role shifted increasingly to Matt.
    • Interestingly, the Tom counterpart in Eduardo's house still maintains the role of the buttmonkey for their gang.
• Call-Back:
  • In "Space Face Part 2," Tom is seen wielding Future Edd's weapon from "WTFuture".
  • In the flashback in "PowerEdd", you can see multiple Eddsworld cameos, including Laurel from "MovieMakers", Tord, and Paul.
  • The Legacy run of the show overall has a real knack for this, for obvious reasons. Almost everything in this image from "The End" is either some kind of inside joke or reference from a past episode. It's pretty swell.
  • When Matt is taking his... thing to his room in "Hammer and Fail", he is heard muttering "It was better being ruler of everything, it was awesome", referring back to "WTFuture".
  • "Fun Dead" begins the same way "Zombeh Attack" did - the gang driving to their destination and singing along to the Shaun of the Dead theme.
• The Cameo:
  • Eddsworld Legacy donators were given the opportunity to appear as a cameo in an episode if they contributed over a certain amount.
  • Nick Fury, of all people, gets one in The Stinger of "PowerEdd".
• Can't Take Anything with You: Referenced and averted in a deleted scene from "WTFuture".
  Future Edd: I have no idea what those naked Austrian guys were talking about... "Your clothes cannot time travel with you because they are not made of biological matter!" Whatever that was about...
• Captain Obvious: Captain State the Obvious in "Tom's Tales of Awesome".

• Character Aged with the Actor: In the 2005 short "Snobody", Edd is said to be 17, the same age as Edd Gould at that time. In the later episodes, he's shown to be an adult.
• Character Overlap: Kate Dexter from TomSka's series Crash Zoom appears in the music video "Trick or Threat", terrozing Matt and Edd after Matt refuses to give her Halloween candy.
• Characterisation Marches On: In early Eddisodes, Matt's catchphrase was "Indubitably!". In "Hammer and Fail 2", Tom is suspicious of Matt using a word with more than two syllables. Also Matt's "personal hell" was Edd, but by the "legacy" episodes, he got along better with Edd.
• Chekhov's Gag: The Legacy finale, "The End," starts with Tom humorously using a harpoon gun while fishing with Edd and Matt. Later, after Tord tries to leave with his giant robot, Tom uses that same harpoon gun to destroy Tord's robot engine. He even lampshades this after Tord's defeat.
  Tom: [after defeating Tord] I told you that harpoon gun would be useful.
• Christmas Episode: Many. The more prominent ones:
  • The "Zanta Claws" trilogy, dealing with the guys' encounters with a zombie Santa Claus.
  • "Xmas Day", an episode narrated like a Christmas story about a particularly bad Christmas.
  • "Christmas Eddventure", about Tom attempting to avoid getting roped into standard Christmas plots.
• Cold Open: Several long eddisodes begin with a short scene of a couple minutes, followed by a personalized intro that changes depending on the animation's theme.
• Comedic Underwear Exposure: Mixed with Clothing Damage; in the Obligatory Building Montage in "Hammer and Fail Part 1", a thread from Matt's shirt catches his belt sander and rips off all his clothes except his boxers. He either doesn't notice or more likely, given this is Matt we're talking about, doesn't care.
• Companion Cube:
  • Tom calls his spiky head of hair "Steve".
  • Shoe from "MovieMakers".
  • Susan, Tom's bass guitar.
• Couch Gag: The brief intro sequence has been changed several times, such as having characters talk in time with the tune, or by changing the tune to something relevant (for example, reversing it in "Mirror Mirror").
• Continuity Porn: Both parts of "The End" contain a metric crapload of references to all the previous episodes, up to and including the crew recreating them with Tord.
• Curse Cut Short: Twice during "Hammer and Fail 2".
• Cut Short: Averted, despite the creator's death the show still goes on.
• Darker and Edgier: The 2005 toons onward seem to be full of Black Comedy, rather than straightforward lighthearted rapid-fire comedy based on real life events. "The End" was the darkest episode of all, it had gore too.
• Deadpan Snarker: Tom. Edd can slip into this.
• Death Is Cheap: The cast are constantly killed off in the animations and comics, but are always back by the next episode or comic. It led to a bunch of awkward moments after the real Edd's death. However, this trope seems to only apply to the main four, as there are other characters that actually were Killed Off for Real, such as Laurel, Hellucard (assuming the webcomics are non-canon), and Jon.
• Demonic Possession:
  • Matt in "Hammer and Fail 2". Fortunately, he turned out to be too unbearable and was subsequently dumped.
  • Kate does this to the gang in "Trick or Threat". Tom is immune because he's already been possessed.
• Deteriorates Into Gibberish: "MovieMakers" has this humorous exchange between Edd and Laurel during the movie-making montage.
  Laurel: The space cats will kill us all!
  Edd: Kill us all!?
  Laurel: KILLUSAAWLL!
  Edd: KILLASAW!?
  Laurel: KILUZSPEZSPA!

• Disproportionate Retribution:
  • In "PowerEdd", it's revealed the reason Eduardo hates Edd so much is that in primary school, Edd beat Eduardo in a drawing competition and Edd made fun of him for being in second place.
  • In "Trick or Threat" Kate tries to make the guys kill each other after Matt refuses to give her Halloween candy.
• Do Well, But Not Perfect: According to Tom, this is one of the reasons why Tim Hautekiet is chosen as the new voice of Edd. Tim is not an aspiring voice actor and sounded "rough around the edges", whereas the others who auditioned for the role, it seems, sounded too professional.
• Drama Bomb Finale: While ultimately a Series Fauxnale, "The End" counts as one. The moment Tord gets into his giant robot almost all comedy is tossed out of the window.
• Dramatic Irony: Despite easily being the most violent and trigger-happy out of the four, Tord actually has the least amount of confirmed kills in the entire series. What's more, his only kill came at the series finale, thirteen years after the original skits aired.
• Driven to Suicide: Edd's milkman in "Zanta Claws", Future Edd in "WTFuture".
• Early-Installment Weirdness:
  • Matt wore a black shirt under his green jacket, Tom's eyes were occasionally drawn more akin to an expressive unibrow instead of his signature "eyesocket eyes" he has in the later shorts, and the gang is far more prone to starting violence.
  • The earlier videos that still had Tord can be viewed as this, as he has left the series and the view of his character has almost completely changed as of "The End".
  • In the first two Christmas specials, Tom is just as willing to participate in the Christmas festivities as the other boys, with him only pointing out he technically doesn't celebrate Christmas at the very end of 2005. His more familiar characterization as The Grinch wouldn't take hold until "Zanta Claws".
  • The first "Zanta Claws" is the only episode of the "Zanta Claws" trilogy to have Tord, as the episode was made before Tord was Put on a Bus (something that Zanta himself lampshades in "Zanta Claws: Part 2").
  • In "Edd" and "Edd Again", Edd and Matt were literally just cartoon version of their real-life counterparts, along with a third friend named Joe who was removed because of the real one ending his friendship with Edd.
  • The characters used to live on an "Eddsworld Building", which was later turned into just their workplace before disappearing completely (until 2020, when it was brought back). When the house was first introduced, only Edd and Tord lived in it, with Tom living in an apartment, though in "Tord's Adventure", Tord is shown to live in Norway, and the entire basis of the short being his long travel from Norway to the UK just to go to Edd's house. As of 2007, all four boys began living in the same house, with Tord leaving in "25ft Under the Seat" and later permanently destroying the house beyond repair, making the trio move to an apartment afterwards.
  • "Space Face: Part 1", the first Legacy episode, is in the classic artstyle and has Edd voiced by his real-life self. Justified as it was created before Gould's passing.
  • Many of the older episodes have at least one of the boys killed off (they would get better by the next episode), with not even Edd being immune to this. The boys would eventually receive Plot Armor from Legacy onwards.
• Even the Subtitler Is Stumped: In Edd's video "Remix the Runt", several lines are listed as (inaudible).
• Everyone Went to School Together: According to "PowerEdd", the main protagonists, the Neighbors, Laurel, Hellucard, Paul, Diwi, Ben, Lucy and Wonchop all went to the same elementary school together.
• Exact Words: During "Moving Targets", Sgt. Hilarson tells the heroes not to stop scrubbing the bathroom floor until he can see his face in it. Edd draws a picture of Sgt. Hilarson's face on the floor in marker. The Sgt. is not amused by his cheek, and decks him for it.
• Exty Years from Publication: In "Spares", the Evil Director's theory about where the clones went involves them hibernating with a sign reading "Don't wake 'til 3008", exactly one thousand years after the episode was created and published.
• Eyeless Face: Instead of eyes, Tom only has two black holes in his face (although he can still see... somehow). His mother was a bowling ball and his father was a pineapple, explaining his lack of eyes (and round head shape).
• Flashback with the Other Darrin: In "Zombeh Attack 1", Tord is voiced by Alex L'Abbé. When Future Edd goes back to the events of that Eddisode in "WTFuture", Tord's line is reshot with Tord Larsson.
• Fun T-Shirt: Edd's "Smeg Head" shirt.
• Fun with Subtitles: In the Flash version of "WTFuture" and YouTube version of "MovieMakers":

Tropes G-Z

• Gender Flip: Matt's mirror in "Mirror Mirror" is a portal to a universe where the characters are all of the opposite gender.
• Geodesic Cast: Each of the cast members has a Gender Flip version of themselves from a mirror world, a Jerkass neighbor counterpart, a Wild West-era historical figure that resembles them, and a Wild West era version of their Jerkass neighbor who is also a bandit. Tord's counterparts tend to be rather hidden due to leaving the cast before their introductions, but he still gets the occasional reference.
• Gilligan Cut: In "Tom's Tales of Brilliance".
• Gory Discretion Shot: Used in "Zanta Claws", when Zanta bites a kid's head off.
• Green Aesop: "Climate Change". Played for Laughs though, as Edd is able to stop a tsunami by unplugging everything.
  Edd: Well, that's just silly.
• Grub Tub: "Zanta Claws II," the titular Zanta tries to distract the trio by giving them what their hearts desire. Which for the Cola-obsessed Edd is a pool filled with the stuff. After eagerly diving into, we find out what happens when you try to jump into a pool filled with fizzy carbonated liquids.
• Halloween Episode: There are several, including "Matt Sucks" (featuring Matt turning into a vampire) and "Trick or Threat" (a Musical Episode).
• Heh Heh, You Said "X": In "Spares", while Bing explains his plan in the chalkboard, he writes "algeBRA". Then an arrow that points to "hee hee".
• Hellevator: "Hello Hellhole".
• Hockey Mask and Chainsaw: In the 2007 Halloween Special, the killer who invades the boys' house wears these. He also has an axe.
• I Call It "Vera":
  • The name of Tom's bass, "Susan".
  • Parodied and Subverted in "Saloonatics".
    Tom: You can't fire your gun without giving it a name first!
    Edd: Oh! I shall call him... Bryan!
    Tom: What?! No! You can't call it a man's name!
    Edd: "Why, what's yours called?

• Internet Incorporated: Provides the page picture, as seen in "MovieMakers".
• It's a Wonderful Plot: Zigzagged in the 2005 Christmas special. Without Edd's influence, Tom is the head of a multi-million dollar corporation and is friends with Tord, who became a successful comic strip artist, but Tord also became a fully-fledged communist and conquered most of Norway until he was arrested, Matt wandered off and became a hobo, and Coca-Cola went out of business.
• Invisible Parents: Edd and Tord's parents were never seen at all, while Matt's dad only appears in a comic.
• Killed Off for Real: Laurel from "MovieMakers". Jon, as of "The End (Part 2)".
• Late to the Punchline: In "WTFuture", it takes Edd ten years to pick up on a not-so-Stealth Insult.
• Leaning on the Fourth Wall: In "The Beaster Bunny"^note the first full new episode after Matt took over from Tom Tom crashes his car and it vanishes into thin air, and Edd muses "I'm really going to miss Tom's car (TomSka)" while Matt complains "we were always late and the running costs were outrageous".
• Lightmare Fuel: In the comic Nightmare, Edd has a nightmare where Tom warns him that the house is on fire, he is unfazed by it, but when he notices his can of cola and missing, Tom says he drank it, and so Edd wakes up horrified.
• Logo Joke: Several episodes have an unique spin on the "Eddsworld" logo at the beggining.
  • In "Climate Change", the theme music is changed to be more epic-sounding, and a spinning Earth globe replaced the letter "O".
  • In "Hammer and Fail Part 2", Tom is heard singing, at the rythym of the theme tune, "I did not want to do this". In "Space Face Part 2", Edd (with Tim Hauketiet's voice) similarly sings "This is Space Face Part 2, which won't make any sense if you haven't watched Space Face Part 1. So, if you haven't already done that maybe you could do that now. Thank you." Since this phrase is too long to fit the regular tune, the letter "D" and its sound effect are extended multiple times for this version.
• Lotus-Eater Machine: Subverted in "Zanta Claws II", where Zanta gives the protagonists "their hearts' desires" (for Tom, a pair of eyes, for Matt, a heap of money, and for Edd a swimming pool filled with Coca Cola). All these gifts were physically real, and the painful side effects (It Burns!) were due largely to the trio's own stupidity.
• Major Injury Underreaction: In "Space Face", Edd misfires a Normalizer gun at Tom, giving Tom normal eyes. Matt hits Tom with a laser gun, which burns his eyes back to black circles. Tom initially reacts with an unimpressed "lame"; the actual reaction to having his eyes burned out isn't as fast.
• Monster of the Week: A good number of the episodes involve the gang confronting some sort of villain, who usually doesn't reappear after being defeated.
• Missing Steps Plan: In "Zombeh Nation", Edd's plan to dominate the world using bacon has: step 1: bacon, step 2: bacon with an arrow pointing to the world, step 3: ????, and step 4: world domination.
• Monumental Damage: Defied. The demon possessing Matt's body in "Hammer and Fail 2" wanted to, but Matt likes monuments and refuses to go along.
• Musical Episode: "Trick or Threat", the 2015 Halloween episode, though it's more of a standard short with a song going along with it.
• Naked People Are Funny: Occasionally done for a gag; curiously Edd himself seems to be the most common target of it.
  • In "This World of Edd", one of the things Edd decides to do while everyone in the world seems to be missing is streak through a government building.
  • One of Edd's clones in "Spares" is naked.
  • In the music video "Money (That's What I Want)", there's a Freeze-Frame Bonus that doubles as something of a meta Embarrassing Slide of Edd being walked in on while he's getting out of the shower.
• The Neidermeyer: Sgt. Hilarson from "Moving Targets".
• Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Eduardo's sole purpose as a supervillain in "PowerEdd" is to make it clear that he is better than Edd. Eduardo destroys the city, cuts off the factories that make Edd's favorite things, and nearly kills Edd... because Edd mercilessly taunted him about taking second place back in a primary school art contest.
• Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: Parodied in "Spares". The boys are watching a movie in which the hero of said movie fights the "super-powerful demon mutant zombie pirate magic ninja evil overlord from hell and outer space". As a bonus point, the movie in question is called "The Big Named Monster".
• No Antagonist: Although most episodes have the heroes fighting against an antagonist, there are a few which don't have any actual villain, usually being just about the characters' hijinks. Episodes like this include "Hello Hellhole", "Moving Targets", "MovieMakers", and "Slippery Slope".
• No Ontological Inertia: In "Climate Change", when the gang disconnects everything, not only does the tsunami stop, it also goes backwards, restoring all the destroyed buildings.
• Not in the Face!: "Not the face!" is one of Matt's catchphrases.
• The Nth Doctor: The in-universe explanation for Edd's voice change is him being zapped by a voice-changing raygun in "Space Face (Part 2)".
• Ode to Food: "Sandwich" is a song about a man who loves a sandwich.
• Oh, Crap!: Edd has a facial version when in "WTFuture", he hears the guy from outside the diner say "Ey, Edd!". While Edd is still in his booth.
• One Curse Limit: In "Trick or Threat", this is the reason why Kate can't possess Tom.
• One-Neighbor Neighborhood: Everyone knows the gang's neighbors are Eduardo, Mark, Jon and Todd, but their other neighbors have never been shown. Kim used to live in the house to the right of Edd, but was never been shown there after her debut episode, and according to "The End", she's moved to somewhere else since then.
• Our Clones Are Different: In "Spares", the Evil Director creates a cloning machine to make clones of the main four to act as an audience for his movie. The machine is powered by a monkey, and the clones themselves are created via adding their features onto a blank dummy.
• Out-of-Character Alert: In "Christmas Eddventure", Tom singlehandedly disposes of multiple Christmas-themed characters and refuses to let the gang go on any Christmas-y adventures... all because he made dinner and wants to spend Christmas with them that way. Edd notices that this is unusual for Tom, since he always hated Christmas.
• Paper-Thin Disguise:
  • When Edd, Tom and Matt tried to disguise themselves as fish in "25ft Under the Seat". It actually worked for a time.
  • An even more extreme example is when Zanta Claws tries to disguise himself as normal Santa by just switching hats. It was enough to fool Tom.
• Plot-Sensitive Button: Tord hits the same button twice in The End: Part 2, the first dumping a hat on his head and the second dropping him into the cockpit of his giant robot.
• Possession Levitation: In "Hammer and Fail 2", the boys find a demonic entity inside Matt's room. The entity then takes control of Matt, making him levitate above their house.
• Posthumous Collaboration: The real-life Edd apparently didn't want the series to end after his death. His friends now carry on his work with a new animator and a new voice actor for Edd's character.
• Power Trio: As of "25ft Under the Seat".
• The Problem with Pen Island: "This is where the therapists are!" *Beat Panel* "They should really make the space between the E and the R bigger..."
• Product Placement:
  • Edd is obsessed with Coke and refuses any substitutes. Averted since Edd's death— Ridgewell stated on Twitter that he wants to avoid being sued for copyright infringement, so Coke became cola.
  • Same with Tom and Smirnoff. See Berserk Button.
  • Parodied in "Ruined":
    Tom: What in the name of this delicious bowl of Eddsworld Cereal happened to my bass!
• Puff of Logic: In "Zanta Claws II", Edd, Tom, and Matt fly by car to the North Pole by way of the Zed Gear. Matt questions how a car can fly, and their flight is cut short.
• Punctuation Changes the Meaning: In one comic, Tom sees a sign on Edd's bedroom door reading "Edds Room" and remarks on the bad grammar. The room is actually full of clones of Edd.
• Pungeon Master: Edd is a master of his craft.

• Put on a Bus: Tord was part of their adventures, up until "25ft Under The Seat", where he left. When he found out that Edd died, he decided to make a video giving his reasons for leaving. Unfortunately, Tord deleted his YouTube account.
• Rapid-Fire Comedy: Most of the 2007-2009 episodes are this. One joke after another, without expectation.
• Refusal of the Call: In "Christmas Edd-venture", Edd, Tom and Matt are called by several people for Christmas adventures, but Tom shoos them all out. It turns out that was actually a penguin disguised as Tom, who kidnapped the real one and invaded the house with his army of penguins.
• The Rival: Eduardo and his gang parallel Edd, Tom, and Matt.
• Rule of Funny: A lot of the videos rely on this.

• Running Gag:
  • Matt frequently has gags involving pictures of himself.
  • Edd (or, on one occasion, a counterpart of his) giving someone an Embarrassing Nickname while bearing a Playful Cat Smile.
  • The "Flaaaaashbaaaaaack" jingle and accompanying transition, first appearing in "Hammer & Fail".
  • The guitar sting that plays whenever the guys' Evil Counterparts appear in "Hammer & Fail". It's apparently their doorbell sound.
  • Tom's house-hunting montage in "The End (Part 2)" features him being attacked by a pack of dogs several times.
  • In the webcomics, there's a reocurring gag of Edd making a bad pun and his friends responding by inflicting physical violence upon him.
• Sanity Ball: Passed rapidly between Edd and Tom.
• Self-Deprecation:
  • "MovieMakers" runs on this. Keep in mind both Tom and Matt make YouTube sketches.
  • "Casting Call" is another example. Matt Hargreaves gets into an argument with his animated counterpart over another actor auditioning for the role of Matt.
    Matt Hargreaves: What the hell is this? That role is already filled by me! This had better be a mistake.
    Matt: No mistake.
    Matt Hargreaves: WHAT!?
    Matt: Look, it's nothing personal. We just don't like you. Or your voice. Or your ugly, ugly face [pokes Hargreaves' face].
    Matt Hargreaves: Well, that feels very personal.
• Series Fauxnale: "The End" turned out to be this, as the show resumed uploads in 2020.
• Shmuck Bait: Death in a Can.

• Ship Tease: Oddly enough, two videos had this between Edd and a girl named Coco (voiced by Edd's real-life friend Mewfoxgirl). In one, she's explicitly portrayed as his potential love interest (this doesn't end well) and in another she inexplicably has an Edd plushie.
• Shout-Out:
  • In "WTFuture" the TARDIS appears in the background while the gang are being chased, and re-appears during the joyride sequence in Space Face (Part 2). In a later scene of the former episode, the words "Bad Wolf" are also graffitied onto a building.
  • In one of the wallpaper designs, Tom, Edd, and Matt are hanging out of the door of the TARDIS as it travels through time. The title? Doctor EW.
  • The room of pilfered alien gadgets in Space Face Part 1 is a goldmine for this. In one scene alone, you can see:
    • The heads of R2-D2 and C-3PO, as well as Han Solo's blaster
    • A Sonic Screwdriver, the head of a Dalek, a Sontaran helmet, and the Tenth Doctor's hand in a jar
    • The Ark Of The Covenant
    • A Starfleet Red Shirt uniform (complete with blast mark) along with a box marked "Tribbles"

  • One of the monitors in "Space Face Part 2" reads that the power level is 9001.

  • In "Fun Dead", there's ASDF Land. Also, one of the food stands there says Jill's Sandwiches. (Doubles as a shout out to Dead Rising as well.)
    • Speaking of Resident Evil, during the opening credits (which are a Call-Back to the first Zombeh Attack) you can see a poster for the Umbrella Corporation.
    • One of the background characters is the player character from Zombies Ate My Neighbors.
    • Yet another cameo in Fun Dead is a zombified version of Simon Pegg from Shaun of the Dead.
  • Near the end of 'Saloonatics'', Matt's ancestor is seen bragging to two girls that look like human versions of Catty and Bratty.
  • When Jon is seen after the house blows up in The End: Part 2, his pose looks exactly like Yamcha's infamous death pose when he's killed by a Saibaman.
  • "THREE books?! No one said anything about THREE books!"
  • The whole Zombeh series of animations showcases Edd's fondness for the Evil Dead franchise.
  • In Ellsworld: Slippery Slope, Matilda freezes to death in the style of Jack Torrance, complete with a jarring Scare Chord and a close-up of her frozen body.
• Snowlems: All three versions show up in the winter special, The Snogre (get it? Because the ogre is made of snow?)
• Stylistic Suck: The crude outlines in Edd's style, which also contrasted the smoother animations with thinner outlines.
• Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: In "Moving Targets", Tord lands on one side of a seesaw with the rest of the gang landing on the other. Instead of the expected Seesaw Catapult trope, in which Tord gets sent flying, the board snaps as it could not support the gang's weight.
• Take That, Audience!: Matt's reactions to a Fan Fic in Fan Service 2 are clearly meant to be jabs directed at Slash Fic writers.
  • "X Mas Day" features a scene with a stereotypically nerdy fan asking the gang "Can I be on your show?", clearly poking fun at fans who asked the group similar questions.
• Temporal Suicide: In the episode "WTFuture", Edd gets a visit from his future self, who reveals to have traveled to the past with the intent on killing his past self to spare himself of living in a future where cola is outlawed as a drug.
• Tempting Fate:
  • Most of the bystanders in "WTFuture" are killed off or maimed this way. The man who demanded extra crispy chicken gets his hand scorched to the bone via the laser (which also scorches the chicken), a man pushes past an old lady rudely (and is promptly vaporized,) and Superguy and the man with him are vaporized because Superguy is immune to "Everything in the world, except giant lasers."
  • When future Matt and Tom arrive to stop future Edd, Matt remarks they need to stop him before he screws up the future. Immediately after, future Matt changes from having a robotic eye and a metal chin and his regular (albeit receding) hairstyle to a normal face and a combover with a little "pop!" sound effect.
  • In "MovieMakers":
    Tom: Even if they don't [like our film], it's not the end of the world. (cut to destroyed London)
• Title-Only Opening: While longer episodes from 2007 onwards tend to have an intro sequence (either in the beginning or after the initial scene), shorter or older ones only have the classic intro jingle in the beginning, or no intro at all.
• That Poor Car: In "Hammer & Fail Part 2", Tom gets flung backwards into his car, setting off the alarm until he turns it off.
• That's What I Call "X"!: Said by the Evil Director at the end of "Spares":
  "Now that's what I call recycling!"
• Theme Table: Each of the four characters has a sweater color they're associated with and something they're obsessed with^note Cola for Edd, drinking for Tom, violence for Tord, and Matt for Matt..
• Theme Tune: This one, used in the full version of "Space Face", uploaded on DeviantArt.
• Toilet Humor: In "The End Part 2", when Edd and Matt are pressing buttons in Tord's secret lab, one of them somehow brings the toilet to life and it runs in desperately begging someone to erase its memories.
• Token Evil Teammate:
  • Tom tends to be the most sour and hateful out of all of them. Especially around Christmas.
  • When he was around, Tord was pretty bad, maybe even worse. For example, in "Zanta Claws I," Edd got yelled at for ignoring his milkman's Christmas Card (mild apathy), Matt got yelled at for stepping on a bug, and Tom got yelled at for eating a pie that he wasn't supposed to eat. Tord got yelled at for playing paintball with real guns. (He seems quite proud of himself when reminded of this incident.) Strongly implied to now genuinely be evil at the end of "The End (Part 1)", and then confirmed to have been evil all along in "The End (Part 2)".
• Took a Level in Kindness: Matt used to be a complete jerk, but is now a decent guy.
• Took a Level in Jerkass: In "The End (Part 2)", Tord returns a little jerkier than before. Not only does he sock Matt in the face for nearly pressing a button, but it seems his interests now fall into the World Domination category.
• Trash the Set: In "The End: Part 2", Tord's giant robot explodes the house he and his friends had been living on during almost the entirety of the series. After he is defeated, the main trio buys a new apartment, where they presumably are still living on as of Beyond.
• Trigger-Happy: Tord. He brings guns in almost every episode he is in.
• Twist Ending: "Trick or Threat".
  Edd: [to Tom] Why couldn't she possess your mind?
  Tom: You can't possess something twice. [flashes an evil grin as his eye sockets start glowing]
• The Unintelligible: The King of the Fish People from "25ft Under the Seat".
• The Unreveal:
  • Future Edd mentions what year he's from in "WTFuture", but it's covered up by the sound of a passing bus.
  • At the last part of "The End (Part 2)", Tom tells his friends about why his eyes are black spots... while talking with a mouth full of popcorn.
• The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: In the Eddisode named "PowerEdd", Edd takes a hit from a transformed Tom, thus prompting Eduardo, Edd's rival and neighbor, to blast Tom while stating that "NO ONE HITS MY NEIGHBOR BUT ME!"
• Un-person: Parodied in the April Fools' 2022 video posted by the Eddsworld Extra channel, which announces the classic Eddisodes being remastered in HD... and having Tord entirely removed from them, complete with a remade scene from "Ruined" where Tom says "In your face!" to nobody, as Tord is not there anymore.
• Vehicle Vanish:
  • Played with in "Zanta Claws". Zanta is about to attack the four, until an entourage of Coca-Cola vans blasts by. When they clear, only Matt is left. After an awkward "Oh... um..." a smaller entourage comes along and he too vanishes.
  • Played with again in "WTFuture" whereupon looking down an alleyway containing Future Edd, a truck comes along and he vanishes, only to appear next to the trio seconds later. It's also used as a sound effect censor in the same scene.
• Villain Song: Tom gets one in "Zanta Claws 3", where he raps about how much he hates Christmas and wants to destroy it. Subverted as Edd, Matt and Santa all join in to try and get him back to his senses.
• Visual Pun: A lot of the early comics consist of these.
• Weaksauce Weakness: Edd is saved from death by accidentally discovering the Grim Reapers' one weakness: gravy. Literally weaksauce!
• The Western: Saloonatics in a nutshell. The gang's ancestors have all met in the American frontier, with two of them (Matt and Edd) being visitors from Britain, while the third (Tom) was invited to come with them on the trip back, which explains how the ancestors of these three Brits are somehow in the Wild West.
• What Do You Mean, It's Phlebotinum?: The aliens spaceship in "Space Face" is powered by vanity. Played for laughs when it's shown that the reason the aliens abducted the trio in the first place was thanks to Matt mowing an image of himself into the lawn that was so huge, it could be seen from space.
• What Does This Button Do?:
  • "The End (Part 2)". When Matt and Edd are pressing buttons in Tord's secret laboratory, one of the buttons literally says this. This trope also describes the general mentality of Matt and Edd in this particular scene.
  • Invoked in "The End (Part 2)" when Matt and Edd stand at a console and press random buttons to cause Tord's giant robot to start beating itself up.
• What Happened to the Mouse?: Two examples from "The End Part 2".
  • Why exactly is Tord on a wanted poster? While it's hinted to have something to do with his plans for world domination, it's still ultimately never explained and dropped without ever being commented on again.
  • Whatever happened to Eduardo and Mark after their house was destroyed and Jon died.
• Wham Episode: "The End (Part 1)". Tord returns after an eight-year absence and Tom leaves the house after Tord pushes him too far.
• Wham Line:
  • Meta: "Hey Eddheads. We have some bad news..."
  • "The End, Part 1":
    Tord: Hello, old friend.
  • "The End, Part 2":
    Tord: Besides, [the hat] goes really well with my giant robot.
• Wins by Doing Absolutely Nothing: In "Casting Call", Matt gives George Gould the role of Edd on the spot after learning he's Edd Gould's brother without even bothering with an audition.
• With Friends Like These...: In early episodes, the boys don't really seem to care about each others' lives. See Matt Sucks, Breakfast, and <em>Dudette Next Door.</em>
• Zombie Apocalypse: Five videos: "Zombeh Attack" 1-3, "Zombeh Nation", and "Fun Dead". The first three form a complete story, whilst the latter two are mostly unrelated. Fun Dead is technically the only one to operate within the series' loose continuity, since the main cast actually survives its events.
