The Boonchuy Family

    Bee and Oum Boonchuy

Voiced by: On Braly (Oum Boonchuy), Brian Sounalath (Bee Boonchuy)

Anne's parents. They run a Thai restaurant called "Thai Go" and are devoted to their daughter.

  • Alliterative Name: Bee Boonchuy
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Bee has Anne's baby pictures on his phone and is always eager to show them off when given the opportunity.
  • Amazon Chaser: Bee isn't the least bit surprised by his wife's wild side, and he's even shown fawning over her during a highspeed car chase when she's behind the wheel. If anything, he's accepting of it.
  • Ascended Extra: In season 3, due to the main plot shifting to Earth where previously they had only appeared in brief, rare flashbacks.
  • Badass Driver: Bee showcases some excellent driving skills when evading Cloak-bot, even running over the rampaging assassin at one point. It turns out that he's the one always driving because Oum can be pretty hardcore when she's behind the wheel, even balancing the car on two wheels to get around traffic when needed.
  • Badass Normal: They have no powers, no prior knowledge of the things happening in Anne's life, and no real life of combat experience. None of this stops them from helping their daughter and the Plantars in the thick of things, or Oum from dismantling the Cloak-Bot with a sledgehammer.
  • Battle Couple: In "All In", they evolve into this thanks to Mr. X giving them advanced weaponry and training lessons.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Even though it takes them a while, they do become accepting of the Plantars after learning that they took care of their daughter when she was stranded in Amphibia for five months.
  • Bilingual Conversation: Anne prefers speaking in English. Her mother often speaks Thai around their house. They can understand each other without problems. However, Anne admits she can barely string together a full sentence in Thai.
  • Butt-Monkey: Bee almost always get the short end of the stick in episodes he appears in, from failing to break an egg into a pan, to losing his controller and ten hours of gameplay against a boss, to being left out of a group hug because he was the one driving the car. It's implied that a great deal of Anne's own slapstick moments in Amphibia are because she inherited this trait from him.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Although a tad bit excessive, bugging Hop Pop with a tracking device in his sleep does prove crucial in eluding Mr. X and the rest of the FBI when they have Anne and the Plantars trapped in the movie theater's restrooms. It helps that the Boonchuys are honest and visibly ashamed for crossing a line with Hop Pop when explaining how they managed to rescue the group from the Feds.
  • Drives Like Crazy: In "Escape to Amphibia", when chasing with the FBI van with the Plantars in it, Mrs. Boonchuy pulls off some crazy feats with the car. She even says that it's nothing compared to rush hour in Bangkok.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: Oum looks somewhat different in her first appearance, albeit this being back when Anne was a small child and she was younger than her current design, which is first seen in "Ivy on the Run".
  • Education Mama: Based on Oum having a room filled with mannequins of Anne going to college and with different professions, she has always intended for her daughter to accomplish big things in her life.
Oum: A mom can dream, can't she?!
Anne: Why do I get the feeling that I'm not living up to your expectations?
  • Good Parents: Anne seems genuinely satisfied with how her parents raised her. When she fills them in on most of the details surrounding their disappearance, they aren't mad at her for shoplifting the music box that caused the trouble in the first place. Instead, they're scared; what happened was random, and could happen again. They only order Anne and the others to quarantine themselves inside the house for a few weeks for their own safety, rather than grounding her for life.
Anne: I'm an only child, so I don't relate [to Sibling Rivalry]. All my parents' attention was focused on me. And it was (puts on sunglasses) awesome.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Oum is a loving mother and wife who usually wears a purple sweater.
  • Happily Married: They love and appreciate each other through thick and thin. Even while dealing with their daughter's five-month disappearance, their marriage remained strong.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Oum enjoys Thai romantic comedies.
    • Bee is a professional gamer.
  • Immigrant Parents: The Boonchuys are first-generation immigrants from Bangkok to L.A., and in "Froggy Little Christmas", Oum talks to Anne about how she and her husband moved to America and worked to be a part of their community in a strange country. Why and when they left Bangkok are unknown.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: Bee is an affectionate man who enjoys group hugs and tending to his flower garden.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Although Anne lets them know about her adventures in Amphibia up to "The Third Temple", she does not tell them about Andrias' dimensional conquest, Sasha and Marcy's betrayals, and her Calamity Box powers. Anne also has yet to give her mother the butterfly pin she won in "Hopping Mall". Until "Anne-sterminator", when Cloak-Bot attacks the Boonchuy-Plantar clan in their home, forcing Anne to tell them about Andrias and use her powers in front of them; as for the butterfly pin, she finally gives it to her mother in the end credits of "Froggy Little Christmas". Whether she told them about Sasha and Marcy is unknown, but given that she was feeling guilty about keeping secrets even before Cloak-Bot forced her hand, it's not out of the question that she did.
  • Mama Bear: Oum is a fearsome woman when it comes to protecting her daughter from danger. This is best shown in "Anne-sterminator", where she dismantles the Cloak-Bot with a sledgehammer to stop it from shooting Anne.
Hop Pop: Were you surprised by that display of ferocity, Mr. Boonchuy?
    (Beat)
    Bee: No.
  • Metalhead: Hilariously, considering they otherwise hit all the most typical parent tropes, Oum (and to a lesser degree Bee) is clearly a Metalhead. Oum's reaction to hearing hard rock over the mall speaker is to start shredding air guitar until her husband joins in. When she drops Anne and the Plantars off at the museum, she turns on some loud metal music and puts on a pair of shades as soon as they are out of the car.
  • Out of Focus: Despite neither of them appearing in person in the first two seasons, Anne mentions her relationship with her mom and describes her interests more than her dad. This changes in season 3, where they both play more prominent roles.
  • The Paranoiac:
    • When they reappear in season 3, they have this response when Anne reappears on their doorstep, bedraggled and with three sapient frogs in tow. Because Anne doesn't fill them in on the full details on what happened with the Calamity Box, all they know is that she disappeared randomly, on her birthday no less, while they were waiting for her. They become paranoid, ordering her not to leave the house for a while. Her mother even sneaks into her room at night to brush her hair and make sure she's okay.
    • They become even more paranoid when they encounter a villainous robot assassin who stops at nothing to kill their daughter.
  • Secret-Keeper: They're only humans who know the Plantars are frog people. Somewhat subverted in "Temple Frogs", where their temple community also learns about their true identity but promise to keep it a secret since they're Anne's friends.
  • Sixth Ranger: They join Anne and the Plantars as main protagonists in season 3.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Oum looks like an older version of her daughter, even having similar hair.
  • Unnamed Parent: Their last names are obviously Boonchuy, but once they actually show up in season 3, they spend several episodes interacting with the Plantars and Anne without their first names being given, which gets partially Lampshaded in "Thai Feud" when Sprig pretends to be Mrs. Boonchuy writing a note to Ned and just signs it 'Mrs. B'. Matt Braly would eventually reveal their Thai nicknames to be Oum (Mrs. Boonchuy) and Bee (Mr. Boonchuy), but has yet to give their real names.
  • The Voice: Anne's shown her new Amphibian friends a photograph of Sasha and Marcy. She's shown them several pictures of her cat, Domino. The closest she comes to showing them her parents prior to season 3 is a picture of the restaurant they work at. In season 1, Oum made an "appearance" in exactly one of Anne's flashbacks... calling out to Anne from another room. She eventually makes her first physical appearance during a flashback in season 2 from when she took Anne on a trip to Thailand, and her dad appears in the season 3 premiere.

    Domino
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/e7bxam3viaiybmw.jpg

Anne's pet cat.

  • Berserk Button: Besides pets' natural dislike of going to the vet, she apparently doesn't like being touched on the belly much, like many cats don't.
  • Chase Scene: In the season 3 intro, Domino claws at Polly and chases after her when she jumps on her.
  • Foil: To Domino 2. Domino 2 acts catlike and bonds with Anne, but she wanted to eat the Plantars as soon as she was big enough. In contrast, Domino 1 instantly befriends the Plantars and consents to Polly riding her.
  • Horse of a Different Color: Due to their relative sizes, Polly can ride her like a horse, and does so during the quarantine montage inside the Boonchuys' house.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Anne absolutely dotes on her, and taking one look at her will tell you why.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: She loves shawarma. If she ever gets lost, the nearest shawarma shop is the first place to look for her.
  • Tuckerization: Both Dominos are named for Matt Braly's own Real Life cat, also named Domino.

Friends of the Frog Folk

    Dr. Jan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/drjan.png
Name's Dr. Jan. I'm a curator here, and an avid lover of all things ancient!
Voiced by: Anika Noni Rose

The bubbly curator of the Los Angeles Museum of Natural History.

  • Actor Allusion: This isn't the first time a Disney character voiced by Anika Noni Rose has hung out with talking frogs.
  • Badass Driver: She shows some impressive driving skills in "Escape to Amphibia" and "All In".
  • Big Damn Heroes: She comes into the museum with the security guards right when Anne is about to be killed by the Cloak-Bot, causing it to notice and flee, saving her life.
  • Black and Nerdy: She is really helpful when it comes to knowledge about historical stuff.
  • Easily Forgiven: She doesn't hold anything against Anne and the Plantars for trying to steal one of her relics along with destroying most of her exhibits while fighting their robotic villain.
  • Exhaustion-Induced Idiocy: She once accidentally blew up a fossil she was trying to excavate due to self-inflicted sleep deprivation, a mistake she still uses as a cautionary tale when she hears that someone else isn't letting themself sleep.
  • Fangirl:
    • Along with loving all things historical, Dr. Jan has a deep fascination for cryptids and aliens.
    • Based on details in her office, she also has a soft spot for classic sci-fi stories such as Jurassic Park and The X-Files.
  • Genki Girl: She is very enthusiastic about teaching Anne and the Plantar family about the relics at her museum.
  • Hidden Depths: Dr. Jan is quite knowledgeable when it comes to interdimensional research, as she' shown typing the coordinates to Amphibia in the portal's computer while Terri (the team's designated interdimensional scientist) is busy organizing the others to prepare for the dimension jump.
  • Motor Mouth: She can talk for miles on end when someone asks her to explain anything historical.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Dr. Jan is always in a good mood. Even after Anne insults her profession, she still has her smile on.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: As whimsical as she is about her interests, Dr. Jan is also shown to be quite responsible and give good words of advice to Anne when needed, especially in regards to her mission to find a portal back to Amphibia.
  • Secret-Keeper: After the events of "Fight at the Museum", she becomes the first human who isn't related to Anne to know about the existence of anthropomorphic frogs from another world, and she immediately volunteers herself to help them out.
  • Taught by Experience: She knows firsthand what can happen if you overwork yourself without taking the time to regain your energy. as her determination led to her accidentally destroying a Triceratops fossil during a paleontological dig.

    The Thai Community
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/community_63.png
"This is our temple and our community. When one of us is under threat, we all are."

A colorful group of Thai-American citizens whose community life centers around the local temple. They've been a grand help in supporting the Boonchuy family both before and after Anne's disappearance.

  • The Bus Came Back: Well, not all of them, but two senior ladies come back in "Escape to Amphibia" to aid Anne in rescuing the Plantars from Mr. X.
  • A Friend in Need: A defining strength of the community is how they always look out and support each other during their hour of need. Mrs. Boonchuy reveals that the community supported her and Bee emotionally along with working at the restaurant during Anne's disappearance.
  • Heroic Bystander: Each member does their part to fend off the drone army sent by Andrias' assassin.
  • No Name Given: None of the speaking community members have their names listed, not even the two women who join in the rescue mission of "Escape to Amphibia".
  • Secret-Keeper: They all learn about the Plantars being frogs after their disguises fall off, but they vow to keep their identities a secret because of how close they are to Anne.

    The I.T. Gals
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/20211030_092038.jpg
Ally: Just goes to show, anyone can make and maintain a robot if you have the will, the know-how... Jess: And our step-by-step tutorial! Both: And remember! If it doesn't compute, it's time to reboot!
Voiced by: Melissa Villaseñor (Ally), Dana Davis (Jess)

Ally and Jess, two girlfriends who make videos about building robots.

  • Admiring the Abomination: When King Andrias turns a giant Santa Claus balloon into an actual robot, the two girls need to be reminded it wants to kill them to snap them out of their squeeing.
  • All There in the Script: Their names aren't spoken in their first episode, but they are shown in the credits. Their names are first revealed within the show itself in "Froggy Little Christmas".
  • Ambiguously Brown: Both engineers are obviously women of color (with Ally being presumably Asian or Latina), but the exact specifics of their ethnicities are never given.
  • Ditzy Genius: They're both Genki Girls at heart who can fill your head with a lot of useless info on tech, but for them, useless information is fun, because they love robotics. Their advice is sound, but they don't always pay attention to what they're doing, as their panda-bot shows. When Andrias hijacks a Santa float to attack the Boonchuys with in "Froggy Little Christmas", the I.T. Gals are both mesmerized by the sight of the giant robot, and Polly has to snap them out of it before they can help everyone escape.
  • Encyclopaedic Knowledge: Their main gimmick is having knowledge on just about anything robotics-related. If there is something that Ally and Jess don't know it off the top of their head, they won't stop until they learn it.
  • Ignored Expert: They tell Polly that she shouldn't turn Frobo on in her garage, but she's so impatient to have him back that she goes ahead and does it against their advice to wait to have a better space to do so. They even track her down because they realize that she might get herself into trouble as a result.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Until "Escape to Amphibia", they're the only allies of Anne and the Plantars who are unaware of the Plantars' identities as frog people, though they likely knew something was up before the Internal Reveal, since they notice that Polly has a tail.
  • Nice Girl: They're friendly and helpful to Polly.
  • Queer Colors: Ally wears the colors of the pansexual flag, and Jess wears the colors of the bisexual flag. This was intentional on the part of the art team in order to subtly convey their sexualities.
  • So Proud of You: They both express pride for Polly for being able to fix Frobo on her own.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: One of the robots they've made is (or at least was supposed to be) a cute panda robot.
  • Wrench Wench: Both of them qualify as this thanks to their love of robotics.

    Molly-Jo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fangirl.png
Voiced by: Cassie Glow

Robert Otto's granddaughter who is also a fan of superheroes.

  • The Bus Came Back: Initially just a one-shot character, she comes back in "Escape to Amphibia" to aid Anne in rescuing the Plantars from Mr. X.
  • Damsel in Distress: She ends up going through two life-threatening experiences in her episode debut.
  • Fangirl: She becomes a huge fan of "Frog-Man" when he makes his first public appearance.
  • Flashy Protagonists, Bland Extras: Her debut has her sitting in a school bus with other kids, where her colorful hair makes her stand out from the rest of her schoolmates.
  • Screen Name: She goes by MAR1_JO on social media platforms.
  • Shout-Out: Her entire character is one to Mary Jane Watson, to contrast Sprig's superhero persona's Spider-Man and her grandfather's Doctor Octopus; she even shares the initials in her first two names. Her blonde hair also brings to mind Gwen Stacy.
  • Tagalong Kid: She becomes this when she joins the rescue team in "Escape to Amphibia", though it's downplayed since she does contribute to breaking into the government facility and doesn't get in the way like most examples.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: She chastises Sprig and her grandfather for letting their hero-villain alter egos and fight destroy a large portion of Los Angeles.

    Humphrey Westwood
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/humphrey_9.png

Voiced by: Wallace Shawn

A sweet-hearted old man whose one wish is to be recognized as a true actor.

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: He eagerly joins the rescue team in "Escape to Amphibia" to save Hop Pop, since he helped him achieve his dream of acting. As he tells Hop Pop, who is amazed Humphrey came to help him, "Us actors need to stick together."
  • The Bus Came Back: Initially just a one-shot character, he comes back in "Escape to Amphibia" to aid Anne in rescuing the Plantars from Mr. X.
  • The Determinator: He'd have to be, to go to auditions for forty-five years straight, get no bites, and keep right on going with the same hopefulness and optimism as always. He's aware his dream may never come true, but that won't stop him from continuing to try.
  • Identical Stranger: He looks practically exactly like Hop Pop if he was human. This allows him to give Hop Pop his place in line, and later allows Hop Pop to give a role intended for him to Humphrey after making his own big break.
  • Karmic Jackpot: Years and years of patiently auditioning, working a day job as a cleaner, and never giving up, along with his kindness towards Hop Pop, all finally pay off when HP gets him a shot at a high-profile audition, which he nails. He's finally on his way to becoming a star, and he absolutely deserves it.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: This harmless janitor decks out in green and poses as a weird creature to help infiltrate the FBI facilities. His part of the plan goes perfectly.
  • Miniature Senior Citizen: He’s an old man who’s about the same height as Hop Pop, such that they can easily pass for each other.
  • Nice Guy: He's friendly and incredibly humble, and goes out of his way to give Hop Pop a warm welcome to Hollywood. Even when Hop Pop makes it big, he doesn't show a hint of jealousy or resentment, and says he's glad at least one of them made it.
  • Waiting for a Break: He works as a janitor between auditions.

    Terri
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_46855c7d871d68ef3408ca9bd523eaef_b6f30227_2048_0.jpg
I think you all actually did me a favor. [...] This whole thing reminded me that science is for helping others. Not just helping yourself.
Voiced by: Kate Micucci

A rising scientist who is introduced working for Dr. Frakes. When Frakes decides to vivisect the Plantars, however, they turn on her to save the innocent frogs.

  • Ambiguous Gender Identity: Terri is called "lady" once by Annenote , but otherwise doesn't have any pronouns used for them in the show. Marcy's Journal, on the other hand, exclusively uses they/them pronouns for them, but since it's told from Marcy's viewpoint, it's not clear if Terri goes by any other pronouns.
  • The Apprentice: First to Dr. Frakes, until they see how crazy she is. After leaving her, they become Dr. Jan's apprentice.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: They openly admit that their boss is a flat-out jerk who constantly disrespects them and cares more about her own ego rather then engaging in scientific practices.
  • Big Eater: In "Escape to Amphibia", their shopping list includes eight gallons of yogurt-covered pretzels.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Their cyan blue hair is styled in a pixie-cut, which reflects them being transfeminine and being involved in the stereotypically masculine field of science.
  • Deadpan Snarker: They're mostly a nice person, but being a Beleaguered Assistant to Dr. Frakes brings out the snark sometimes. When Dr. Frakes asks them if she would really throw away their entire career for a bunch of "creatures", they answer with a Blunt "Yes" without hesitation.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Downplayed. Terri isn't thrilled about it, but they'll mostly put up with Dr. Frakes' jerkassy and egotistical behavior. However, they draw the line at letting Dr. Frakes kidnap and dissect a sapient frog family, so they help Anne rescue the Plantars and locks up Dr. Frakes in her own dissection lab. When Anne and the Plantars apologize for ruining Terri's career, they admit that it was long in coming, as their career wasn't worth putting up with Dr. Frakes' jerky and self-centered behavior.
  • Everyone Has Standards: As a scientist, Terri is all for expanding their understanding of all things scientific, but they draw the line at hurting innocent people for the sake of science, whether they be human or otherworldly creatures.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: They participate in rescuing the Plantars from their crazed boss, knowing fully well that they're risking being blacklisted from the scientific community for it. Fortunately, Dr. Jan took them in, so their career is still pretty secure.
  • Karmic Jackpot: They took a big risk to their career turning against Dr. Frakes. Ultimately, it paid off and Dr. Jan was kind enough to take them in and sponsor their research, giving their career a second chance.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: They create a working interdimensional portal within a few months with the Plantars' intel. The only reason it's not working perfectly is that an impossibly large amount of power is required to make it big enough for a frog or a person to pass through.
  • Older Than They Look: Downplayed. They're in their early twenties, but they could easily pass as a middle school classmate of Anne's.
  • Queer Establishing Moment: Marcy's Journal: A Guide to Amphibia uses gender-neutral pronouns when referring to Terri, suggesting that they're non-binary.
  • Secret-Keeper: At the end of their episode debut, Terri has learned about the Plantars being Frog People and how they come from another dimension.
  • Start My Own: Dr. Frakes threatens to have them blacklisted from the entire scientific community for helping the Plantars escape, but Terri points out to Anne and the Plantars later that they have all of Dr. Frakes' notes and research about interdimensional portal travel, which they can use to get their own grant. In the meantime, they become Dr. Jan's assistant.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: They love yogurt-covered pretzels, and requests that the Boonchuys buy them eight tubs of them.
  • Unflattering ID Photo: Their employee key card at the Brainasium seems to show them flinching from the camera flash.
  • Youthful Freckles: They have these on their face.

Enemies from Earth

    Mr. X
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rupaul.png
"Looks like our little friends are smarter than I thought. We're gonna have fun with this one, Jenny. And WE'LL have the last laugh!"
Voiced by: RuPaul

A fabulous, high-ranking F.B.I. agent who is put on the case after the Plantars are caught fighting the Cloak-Bot. Driven by his passion for finding, and capturing, extraterrestrial life, he becomes a recurring antagonist for Anne and the Boonchuy-Plantar family.

  • Actor Allusion: His refrigerator has photos of pageant models that bear a great resemblance to promo photos for RuPaul's Drag Race.
  • Affably Evil: For a given value of evil. He's exceptionally polite and a Benevolent Boss, even if he is relentlessly pursuing the Plantars under the belief that they're aliens.
  • Agent Peacock: He's got style and grace, and is exceptionally deadly as a government agent.
  • Agent Mulder: Almost to the point of being an Expy of the trope namer. He's an eccentric F.B.I. agent who's a part of a two-person team that investigates alien sightings and doesn't get much respect from his colleagues for it. Unlike Fox Mulder, he's only open-minded enough to believe that aliens exists, but immediately jumps to the conclusions that the Plantars are scouts for a coming invasion. He also doesn't seem to respect their autonomy as thinking feeling creatures, his first instinct being to dissect them like they were in a high school science class.
  • Ambiguously Evil: He is adamant about bringing the Plantars in and possibly dissecting them, but that's mostly because he doesn't know how or why they came to Earth. For all he knows, they could be the ones plotting an invasion. After listening to the Boonchuys explain themselves and the truth of Andrias invading Earth, he confirms his allegiance as a good guy.
  • Ambiguously Gay: In "All In", a Freeze-Frame Bonus of his phone shows one of his contacts as being named "Hubby", implying that he's married to a man.
  • Anti-Villain: He is an antagonist to the Plantars, but is a pretty polite and gracious man otherwise. All he really cares about is protecting humanity from alien invaders, and he just happens to be wrong about the latter as far as the Plantars are concerned.
  • Arc Villain: He immediately replaces the Cloak-Bot as season 3's next recurring villain on the Earth side of the story.
  • Bald of Evil: He has a solid, shiny chrome dome and is driven to expose the Plantars.
  • Benevolent Boss: He openly praises Agent Jenners for their computer skills and genuinely enjoys their company.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: His debut episode establishes that he's both rather eccentric and a force to be reckoned with.
  • Breaking Old Trends: Not counting Sasha, he's the first human villain that the heroes have to deal with.
  • Cassandra Truth: He and Jenny are a part of the FBI that monitors and captures aliens and he doesn't get much respect for it, especially since the Boonchoys and the Plantars manage to trick him in front of other agents into thinking that Mr. X is a nutcase.
  • Code Name: It’s not everyday you’ll find someone named “Mr. X”, and given the top secret nature of his work with the F.B.I., his real name is classified.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: To Cloak-Bot. The robot was an assassin sent by an amphibian tyrant from another dimension. Mr. X is a human and was assigned to his mission by the American government. The Cloak-Bot was under orders to stay out of human sight while pursuing its mission of targeting and killing Anne Boonchuy. Mr. X is open in informing the public about his extraterrestrial hunting mission and is interested in targeting both Anne and the Plantars, but is simply out to capture them rather than kill them.
  • Crazy-Prepared: He isn't a high ranking F.B.I. agent for just his good fashion sense. This quality is best shown in "Escape to Amphibia", where he outsmarts the Boonchuy-Plantar family on three different occasions. The first is using thermal tracking cameras which he requested from his superior to identify the frog folk as they're shopping. Next, Mr. X sets up a trap using the decoy frogs, knowing that Anne and her friends would try to break into the government facility to save her little froggies. Last but not least, after failing to stop them during their high speed chase, he manages to plant a tracker on their stolen van in order to find their base.
Mr. X: I'm okay, Jenny. They may have gotten away, but Not. Before. I. TAGGED THEM! Hahahaha!
    • During Andrias' invasion of Earth, he is one of the few to be fully prepared, recruiting Mr. and Mrs. Boonchuy and training them to assist with fending off the invasion.
  • Genre Savvy: After learning that a human (Anne) is shown alongside the "aliens" of interest, Mr. X is quick to refer to the setup as "80's movie junk".
  • Graceful Loser: He takes the Plantars and Boonchuys humiliating him in his first appearance in stride, only promising that his pursuit is far from over.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Downplayed, as he's really just doing his job, but when Andrias's invasion comes to earth, he helps to fight off the invasion and trains Mr. and Mrs. Boonchuy to help too and had to warn the U.S. to prep the military.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: He bears a striking resemblance to RuPaul with his facial appearance and glasses.
  • Kick the Dog: In his debut; when a small boy knocks on the ice cream truck he and Jenny are using and politely looks to buy a popsicle, Mr. X tells the boy that the whole popsicle he's currently holding is the last one before he eats it in front of the boy. Later in "Escape to Amphibia", he is needlessly merciless in mocking Anne and attempting to break her spirit.
  • Let X Be the Unknown: Mr. X is likely a codename, so his real name is unknown.
  • Mama's Boy: One of his go-to contacts on his phone is his mom.
  • Meaningful Name: As one agent explains, he's known as Mr. X because his specialty involves catching extraterrestrial life forms.
  • Nice to the Waiter: He's highly complimentary towards his assistant, and is polite to Mrs. Boonchuy when he gets food from her restaurant, even conversing with her in Thai.
  • The Nicknamer: He tends to give cute nicknames to others.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: At first he appears to be an eccentric member of the FBI who isn't taken seriously by the government. However, even as early as his first attempt at capturing the Plantars, he comes dangerously close to succeeding. And then with each consecutive attempt, he steps up his game, proving to be very smart to the point where he not only manages to sucessfully capture the Plantars, but several of Anne's friends as well.
  • Pet the Dog: During his Season 3A-spanning feud with the Plantars and Boonchuys, "Hollywood Hop Pop" reveals that he kept the three amphibians which they used to humiliate him in front of an entire SWAT team, and he apparently takes good care of them.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: He's not particularly malicious, apart from the way he goes after Anne with a stun gun. Capturing the Plantars is just his job. In fact, "Hollywood Hop Pop" shows that his typical mornings involve watching Judge Julie and taking care of the decoy frogs from the theater.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Mr. X wears a lilac suit and tie with purple lipstick, and is a formidable opponent to the protagonists in their first encounter.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: While he's right that the Plantar's presence on Earth is a part of an Alien Invasion, he's wrong that they are willing participants in that invasion, winding up in LA by total accident and are, in-fact, enemies of King Andreas and his plot.
  • Smug Snake: Oh, boy is he ever. Mr. X's actual evil is very low on a scale that's already populated with cannibals, tyrants, and killer robots, so the writers make up for it by making him as arrogant as possible, complete with stereotypical villain put-downs like Not Worth Killing and Just a Kid toward Anne and her family. Needless to say, this blows up in his face every single time, and by the time Anne escapes back to Amphibia and he's left to try and take his anger out on the Boonchuys, they promptly have enough with his bullshit and put him in his place:
Mr. X: You! I hope you're ready to explain yourselves!
Mr. Boonchuy: [slapping his hand away] And we hope you're ready to listen!
  • Something about a Rose: He wears a yellow rose brooch, which adds to his flamboyant image.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: He gets this reaction after Mr. and Mrs. Boonchuy have every intention of telling him all about the frog situation while chewing him out in the process.
    Mr. X: Oh goodie...
  • Touché: His response to the Plantars and the Boonchuys humiliating him in his first appearance is to acknowledge to Jenners that they're clearly smarter than he anticipated, and that this mission will be even more fun than he thought.
  • Underestimating Badassery: In "Escape to Amphibia", he repeatedly underestimates the heroes, but especially Anne.
  • Villainous Breakdown: A subtle one in "Hollywood Hop-Pop". After once again failing to convince his co-workers of the existence of the Plantars, he noticeably struggles to contain his anger.
  • Voice for the Voiceless: Whenever he's with his Silent Partner Jenny, Mr. X does most of the talking.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He may be a deadly hunter who's after the Plantars, but his reasons stem from him wanting to catch potential aliens before they abduct any human civilians or do something that could harm the general public. Although, he also intends to arrest anyone harboring the "alien frogs".
  • Wicked Cultured: Along with having an exquisite fashion sense, he also knows how to speak Thai.
  • Worthy Opponent: He considers the Plantars and Boonchuys this for evading and humiliating him in his first appearance.
  • Would Hurt a Child: His first reaction on seeing that the "string-bean" human that was photographed with aliens is a skinny teenager...is to pull a stun gun on her that's implied to be more powerful than a taser. He also has a Psychotic Smirk when doing this.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: He seems absolutely convinced that the Plantars are up to something nefarious, like an invasion, simply because they aren't human. While Andrias is planning to invade Earth, the Plantars have nothing to do with that. When he finally captures them in "Escape to Amphibia", he keeps interpreting their statements and actions as malevolent when it's clearly not the case.

    Agent Jenners "Jenny"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jenny_40.png
Voiced by: Unvoiced

Mr. X's right-hand partner, a silent government agent who commits to their superior's alien hunting mission.

  • Affectionate Nickname: "Jenny" by Mr. X.
  • Ambiguous Gender: A lot about this character is a mystery, including their gender. It's unknown whether they are male or female, given they have a somewhat masculine appearance, but appear to have breasts and are always called by the feminine name "Jenny" (which might not even be their real name or anything close), and they haven't been referred to by any gender-related pronouns to date, not to mention Jenners doesn't even talk. Considering the covert ops element of Mr. X and Jenners' mission, their gender could very well be classified. In "Hollywood Hop Pop", Mr. X calls Jenny "girl", though that could just be one of his campier affectations.
  • Ambiguous Situation: "Jenny" might not even be close to their real name, and could just be an alias or codename.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Downplayed, just like their boss. Jenny also fights alongside the heroes to protect Earth from Andrias' forces.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: Mr. X is no slouch when it comes to hunting aliens, but Jenners is just as competent as they follow through with relaying their boss' orders and doing what they can to catch the Plantars.
  • Not So Stoic: While they're presented as a stoic workaholic, they blush bright red (albeit angrily) after Mr. X compliments them.
  • Opaque Nerd Glasses: Zigzagged. Their pupils can be seen at times, but they're often covered by their glasses.
  • Perpetual Frowner: As you'd expect from a MIB, Jenners almost never smiles, except once in "Hollywood Hop Pop", and again in "All In" after Anne defeats Andrias.
  • The Voiceless: They don't speak a single word, or even utter a sound, in all their screen time, preferring to let their body language do all the talking.

    Robert Otto
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/otto_287.png
"This is no longer a popularity contest. This is a battle for the soul of the city. A battle I intend to win!"
Voiced by: Brad Garrett

A neighborhood safety supervisor with a haughty personality. Fueled by jealousy over Los Angeles adoring the Sunny Day Hero, Frog-Man, Robert decides to eradicate his sworn enemy using the arm of the now-croaked Cloak-Bot.

  • Actor Allusion: He shares his first name with Brad Garrett's character in Everybody Loves Raymond.
  • Badass Longcoat: He wears a brown trench coat which brings to mind Dr. Octopus' appearance in Spider-Man 2.
  • Badass Normal: He manages to create incredible amounts of property damage armed with nothing but the Cloak-Bot's arm.
  • Didn't Think This Through: His defining flaw. He does reckless and dangerous stunts without realizing the potential consequences, such as throwing himself in front of a runaway bus without sufficient support or using his superpowers to hunt down Sprig without noticing how much collateral damage he's creating along the way.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He cares deeply for his granddaughter Molly-Jo and is willing to stop his grudge quest when she comes close to getting hurt.
  • Evil Knockoff: Whether intentionally or not, he shares several similarities with his sworn nemesis Frog-Man, such as wearing goggles and a brightly colored scarf, as well as using his arm to extend and move around, much like Sprig's Multipurpose Tongue.
  • Expy: A very obvious one to Doctor Octopus, sharing many characteristics with the Spider-Man villain, right down to sharing half of his name (Robert OTTO, OTTO Octavius), although instead of having four extra mechanical arms, he only has one.
  • Graceful Loser: He takes his punishment with dignity after realizing that he’s become just another attention seeker who nearly killed a lot of people.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He loathes Frog-Man for winning the hearts of the Los Angeles community in only a few days while he's received bupkis for his years as a dedicated safety supervisor.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He gives up his villain persona after being scolded by his granddaughter. He even suggests that he and Sprig work together to clean up the city.
  • Instant Expert: He knows how to fully utilize the robot arm's weapons and features less than a day after finding it.
  • It's All About Me: Even before Frog-Man proves himself a hero, Robert tells him to get off his "turf", believing he's the only help the neighborhood needs.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: He's arrested for destroying Los Angeles, but he accepts his punishment without hassle.
  • Moral Myopia: Despite Frog-Man doing nothing but good, he labels him a "scoundrel" and a "blight" upon the city — just before trying to kill him.
  • Punny Name: The first three letters of his first name and the first two of his surname make up "Robot," befitting the fact that he takes Cloak-Bot's severed arm to fight Frog-Man.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: He's the self-appointed safety supervisor of his neighborhood, with no apparent actual authority to back him, and he's completely convinced he performs a vital service that people should appreciate. In reality, he's just a busybody that harasses everyone for innocently breaching obscure regulations.

    Dr. Frakes

You can't stop me Anne. Once I'm done, EVERYONE WILL KNOW MY NAME!!
Voiced by: Cree Summer

An ingenious but wacky scientist who's made excellent research in various scientific fields, including interdimensional travel. Unfortunately, her attitude towards ethics leaves a frogton to be desired, as the Plantars find out the hard way...

  • Ambition Is Evil: She's willing to open unstable portals to other dimensions and dissect sentient frog aliens in order to become famous.
  • Ax-Crazy: She's perfectly willing to dissect the Plantars the moment they're revealed to be frog-people and attacks her subordinate Terri after they help the Plantars. She even chases the group with a buzzsaw.
  • Bad Boss: She constantly belittles her underling Terri, even threatening to blacklist them for helping the Plantars escape her clutches.
  • Chainsaw Good: She chases Anne and the Plantars with a buzzsaw after they manage to escape her.
  • Child Hater: Despite operating an interactive science museum for children, she strongly detests them.
  • Cut Lex Luthor a Check: Despite having created various sci-fi gadgets that would be revolutionary, she just runs a small interactive learning center for a living.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: When Terri tries to stop her out of basic human decency, Dr. Frakes can't understand why they'd risk their career for a bunch of "creatures".
  • Evil Old Folks: She's an older woman who has no issue with kidnapping and dissecting innocent frog people to improve her public image.
  • Expy: Her rounded body shape, bulbous nose, sunglasses, big grin and hair spreading wildly to the side may bring to mind Dr. Eggman (and his mustache), another egomaniacal Mad Scientist with a knack for animal cruelty.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: She's quite the inventor, as her museum is filled with functioning interdimensional technology and dissection tools. She also has a wristwatch that can capture people via tractor beam.
  • Glory Hound: Her one and only goal is to become the most well-known scientist in history.
  • Hate Sink: She is an incredibly egotistical scientist who has no problem performing dangerous experiments, and when she finds out the Plantars are frog people, she immediately tries to vivisect them. She also abuses her position of authority by threatening to blacklist Terri in the scientific community for trying to stop her murder. As Terri puts it, she is a massive jerk, and that may be putting it kindly.
  • Irony: She hates children, yet she runs an interactive learning center that caters to children of all ages.
  • It's All About Me: She believes that science is the "pursuit of naming things after yourself". She even has plushies of herself to sell to the snot-nosed brats who visit her museum.
  • Mad Scientist: She's an egotistical Gadgeteer Genius who is willing to kidnap and dissect innocent people for fame.
  • Miniature Senior Citizen: She's an old woman with a wrinkly face and grey hair who is much shorter than the teenage Anne.
  • Narcissist: She names all her inventions after herself.
  • Opaque Nerd Glasses: She wears small glasses with round yellow lenses.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Played with. She names many discoveries after herself, and though she is described as brilliant by others and seems to have made real scientific breakthroughs, the fact that she is running a glorified daycare, is shown goofing off in a flashback while her assistant works, and the fact that said assistant is confident they can build a working portal without her show that she's not nearly as capable as she thinks she is. It also suggests that her threat of blacklisting Terri in the scientific community doesn't hold as much as water as she claims.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: A Flashback shows Terri saving Frakes from being pulled into a portal that accidentally opened in her lab. The fact that Frakes treats Terri with zero respect in the present shows just how little that act means to her.
  • Would Hurt a Child: She has no problem with dissecting the Plantars, even though two of them happen to be children, and implies that she has no qualms about running through Anne with a buzzsaw if she doesn't get out of her way.

Civilians

    Maggie
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_5360.png
Hey Boonchuy, watcha eating? A pukebun?
Voiced by: Eden Riegel

A racist human girl who picked on Anne prior to her arrival in Amphibia.

  • Back for the Finale: She makes a cameo in "All In", this time in the present.
  • The Bully: All we know about Maggie is that she picked on Anne at school.
  • Childish Tooth Gap: Maggie is an immature bully with a prominent gap in her teeth.
  • Enemy Eats Your Lunch: She tries to steal Anne's snack until Sasha intervenes.
  • Fiery Redhead: She's a girl with ginger hair and the attitude to boot.
  • Jerkass: A major one towards Anne. She calls her "Boobchuy" as an insult and tries to take her food. Anne tells her it's her birthday. Maggie briefly wishes her happy birthday...then continues trying to steal her lunch.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: It's buried pretty deep down, but even beyond her brief Pet the Dog moment in her debut, Maggie is absolutely on Anne's side when she fights off Andrias in the climactic battle.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: When Sasha threatens to ban her from her pool party if she doesn't stop picking on Anne, Maggie reluctantly does so and leaves the scene quickly.
  • Last Episode, New Character: She appears in the season 1 finale in a flashback to Anne's birthday before she was transported to Amphibia.
  • Malicious Misnaming: She mockingly refers to Anne as "Boobchuy".
  • Only One Name: She's simply known as "Maggie". It's unknown if "Maggie" is short for something like "Margaret" or "Magdalena", or not.
  • Pet the Dog: When Anne informs Maggie that it's her birthday, she takes a brief pause from picking on her to wish her happy birthday in total sincerity. And upon being threatened with the prospect of not being invited to Sasha's pool party, she says she was just playing and gives Anne her snack back.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: It's not so subtly shown that she thinks very little of Anne's culture, deliberately mispronouncing her name and mocking her Thai lunch.
  • Recurring Extra: During various scenes on Earth, she's had a reasonable number of background appearances, though her only speaking appearances are in "Reunion" and "All In".
  • Tomboyish Baseball Cap: She wears a baseball cap and is aggressive.
  • Tomboyish Voice: She's a reckless bully with a raspy voice.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: When she witnesses Anne's victory over Andrias, she is moved to tears and gives her a sincere thumbs up.
  • Youthful Freckles: She has freckles on her face to go with her red hair.

    Mr. and Mrs. Wu (SPOILERS)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2022_12_11_8.png
Voiced by: Eric Bauza (Mr. Wu), Sumalee Montano (Mrs. Wu)

Marcy's parents who planned on moving to another state after Mr. Wu got a new job prior to the events of the show.

  • Ambiguous Situation: We don't know if they moved away during their daughter's five-month disappearance or not. Marcys Journal A Guide To Amphibia reveals that they stayed in Los Angeles while Marcy and her friends were in Amphibia.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Alongside the Waybrights, both parents are revealed to have been deliberately withheld information by Anne and the Boonchuys to avoid needless complications, only being told the truth via annonymous letter by Anne out of her desire to give them a sense of closure and hope.
  • Parents as People: Despite ignoring Marcy's interests and failing to reveal the move before accepting the job opportunity, Marcys Journal A Guide To Amphibia shows Mr. Wu indeed loved his daughter and delayed the move across country in the hopes of her coming home, the two embracing at her return.
  • Satellite Family Member: Their only role (in their only appearance) is that they announce to Marcy that they're moving to another state, which prompts Marcy to steal The Calamity Box and kickstart the whole plot.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Mrs. Wu looks just like Marcy, but older.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Mr. Wu's announcement of him getting a new job out of state, necessitating them moving, is what causes Marcy to run away in tears and trick Anne and Sasha into stealing the music box, which gets them all teleported to Amphibia to keep them together, kicking off the events of the entire series.
  • The Voice: They aren't shown onscreen at any point in the series, but their voices are heard.

    Gabby Williams
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1pb0rhqa5is71.png
Voiced by: Jessica McKenna

One of Anne's friends from back home aside from Sasha and Marcy.

  • All There in the Manual: Her last name was revealed in the publication of Marcy's Journal: A Guide to Amphibia.
  • Gossipy Hens: She's indicated to be this as she proceeds to fill Anne in on all the latest gossip going on at school in "Hop 'Til You Drop" when she sees her for the first time in five months.
  • Meaningful Name: She's called Gabby, and is a gossipy Motor Mouth.
  • Motor Mouth: She can be this when gossiping, oblivious to how uninterested Anne is in it.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: She somehow manages to appear off-frame to gossip to Anne every time she tries to get away from her.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Her insistence on catching Anne up on all the gossip going on while she was gone distracts Anne while she was trying to keep an eye on the Plantars, with all of them getting in trouble around the mall.

    Ned
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ned_5.jpg
Voiced by: Wayne Knight

The Boonchuys' number one customer and later, delivery guy.

  • Heel Realization: He realizes begging for the Boonchuy family recipes so he could use them himself was culturally insensitive.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: He bears some resemblance to his voice actor, Wayne Knight.
  • Innocently Insensitive: He just wants to be part of the Thai-Go family... while operating his own food truck right outside the restaurant. In his defense, the brakes were broken, and it's implied that he was trying to earn enough money from sales to pay to get them fixed, so it would have been dumb of him to move the truck before then, but on the other hand, he neglects to inform Mrs. Boonchuy about this, which means she thinks he's trying to run her out of business.
    • When Anne returned, he tells her that he thought she died.
  • Nice Guy: While his food truck causes trouble for the Boonchuys' business, he opened it out of genuine love and passion for the restaurant rather than any sort of malice, and is, in general, a genuinely nice dude.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: In addition to being an Ink-Suit Actor, he also bears more than a passing resemblance to Guy Fieri.
  • Ocular Gushers: Upon his Heel Realization.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He loves Thai-Go food.

    The "TV Guys"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/winforthegays.png

Two neighbors in a relationship with each other who often get caught in Amphibian shenanigans.

  • Butt-Monkey: Their main scenes involve them suffering some type of misfortune.
  • Dude in Distress: In "All In", they're cornered by Andrias' evil Frobots and would have been vaporized if it wasn't for Dr. Jan and Terri running them over.
  • Like a Son to Me: The man in the track suit once cherished a beloved flat screen and called it his son. Then everything changed when Anne and Sprig crashed into it with their van.
Man in the Track Suit: JUUNIOOOR!!
  • No Name Given: The man in the track suit has no official name, unlike his lover who's a pink-haired man named Tyler.
  • Noodle Incident: The track suit man's annoyed reaction to the 'clownface' message suggests that something happened between the two that involved clowns.
  • Recurring Extra: The two have no impact on the plot, simply appearing in several episodes as part of a joke or as random civilians.
  • Relationship Reveal: After initially appearing for a quick gag in "Thai Feud", where they're shown to be neighbors who live in buildings across from each other, "Sprig's Birthday" reveals that they are in a relationship and have been for long enough to consider marriage.
  • Wacky Marriage Proposal: Done unintentionally. Tyler hired a sky writer to write out "Will you marry me?" in the heavens for his lover to see. To his dismay, a monster clown balloon covers the word "marry" and it's interpreted as "Will you clownface me?", much to his lover's annoyance, who thought he did all this just for some tasteless joke.

Voiced by: Kimberly Brooks

The principal of Saint James Middle School.

  • Cool Teacher: She shows to be friendly when not dealing with troublemakers. She even remembered when Anne's birthday is.
  • Putting the "Pal" in Principal: She's rather lax in dealing with troublemakers, even complementing them if they show particular skills.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She doesn't punish Sasha and Marcy after they release a group of puppies and make a dance party during school time, only complimenting the skill needed to accomplish it. She does, however, make Anne write an essay on who she wishes to be in the future. She only did that because she knew she was influenced by her friends. She also saw a potential in Anne and wished her achieve it.
