    Sazer X

Takuto Ando/Lio-Sazer

A young man from 2005 who aims to be an F1 racer. He was chosen by his grandfater Soujirou to fight the space-pirates. At first he likes to dash into situations without thinking, but gradually grows out of this.

  • The Hero: He's the main character.
  • Hot-Blooded: It goes well with his element, fire.
  • Playing with Fire: His element is fire.
  • Rookie Red Ranger: While the rest of his team are battle hardened soldiers coming from a Bad Future, Takuto enjoyed a carefree life in the present, without any training to fight whatsoever. But this does not stop him from being one of the more effective fighters of the team.

A stoic warrior from the year 2500. Because he was born on the planet of Biyodo, he is raised to live without emotion, which causes him to clash with the rather emotional Takuto, at first.

  • The Lancer: His lack of emotion contrasts with Takuto's very emotional personality.
  • The Stoic: Was raised to live without emotion.
  • Blow You Away: His element is wind.

Kane Lucano/Beetle-Sazer

The goofy kind-hearted member of the group. Kane likes to take things easy, but, like he describes himself, pulls through when the situation calls for it.

  • The Big Guy: Goofy and kindhearted, but also able to pull through when the situation calls for it.
  • Shock and Awe: His element is lightning.

Commander Shark/Shark-Sazer

Supporting cast:

    Space Pirate Fleet Descal

Captain Barder

The leader of the Descal fleet.

  • Disc-One Final Boss: At first he's the Big Bad. But then he gets revealed to be a robot and shorts-circuits before his ship is destroyed by the Sazer-X.
  • Robotic Reveal: Revealed to be a robot after lighting strikes his ship.

The Three Shogun

A trio of pirates from the present time. In the original timeline, they succeeded in conquering the earth, as earth had no defenses against their superior technology. But after Sazer X arrives in the present, the Three Shogun prove to be rather inept at taking over earth.

  • Co-Dragons: To Captain Barder.
  • 11th-Hour Ranger: Formally join Sazer X near the final battle.
  • Freudian Trio: Blaird is the Id, Aqual is the Ego and Cyclead is the Superego.
  • Terrible Trio: Subverted. In the first arc, they really fit this trope, in being a trio of inept villains, but after their much more evil and effective descendants from the future arrive, they break up due to a difference in opinion and do not return to being a villainous trio. By the time they do reunite, they already pulled a full Heel–Face Turn.

The hotheaded fire-themed member of the trio. Because of his similarities to Takuto, he forms a one-sided rivalry with him, which later turns into a grudging friendship.

  • Accidental Misnaming: He falls victim to this a lot to the point it becomes a Running Gag. Examples include Blender, Bourré and Bracelet.
  • The Brute: Reasonably strong, but also hotheaded.
  • Character Development: He starts out as the stereotypical hotheaded brutish villain, but after he is captured by Sazer X and held prisoner at the Andou household, he gradually gets more calmer and wiser to the point of lecturing his old rival Takuto about the values of family.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Takuto, given how both are Hot-Blooded and have the fire element.
  • Heel–Face Turn: The first of the Shogun trio to do so. After his captain is revealed to be fake, Blaird starts to doubt his cause as a pirate. He really makes the turn when he dislikes the cowardly ways his future descendants use, being an honorable warrior himself.
  • Hot-Blooded
  • Playing with Fire: His entire design looks like he is some kind of fire elemental, so it would be weird for him not to use this trope in a series where every fighter uses an element.

An absent-minded scientist with the element of wind. He comes up with inventions to fight Sazer X, but is the first of the three who wants to stop fighting.
  • Brainwashed: Neo Descal brainwashes him to have a more aggressive personality.
  • Blow You Away: His element is wind.
  • Evil Genius: He's a very intelligent inventor and clearly the smartest out of the three shoguns.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After being freed from his brainwashing, he is quick to join the good guys.

The water-based female member. She likes to use underhanded tactics and can be rather vain.

Future Space Pirate Fleet Neo Descal

  • Evil Sounds Deep: Speaks with a guttural voice.
  • Big Bad: After his arrival he quickly becomes the primary threat. At least until King Neo Descal appears and punishes him for his failures.

King Neo Descal

  • Bad Boss: Kills Garade upon his arrival and later kills his right-hand woman Barreda when she is of no more use to him.
  • Big Bad: He's the one behind everything.
  • The Man Behind the Man: To Garade.
