Shadow Garden

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/teis_shadow_garden.jpg
We are Shadow Garden. We lurk in the shadows, and hunt the shadows. That is all we live for..."
A secret organization founded by Cid Kagenou a.k.a Lord Shadow to fulfill his fantasy as an eminence in shadow. Their main goal is to destroy the Cult of Diablos. While initially starting out with just Shadow and Alpha, their numbers grew with six other members, who along with Alpha became the Seven Shadows. After saving their master's sister, Claire Kagenou, the Seven Shadows left their master's side to expand the organization beyond Midgar. In the years until their master would enroll into Midgar Royal Spellsword Academy, they made a base in the lost city Alexandria, recruited hundreds of members, and founded the company Mitsugoshi, ltd., which also acts as their public front.

    General
  • Amazon Brigade: With the exception of their leader, Shadow Garden is composed solely of beautiful female assassins. Justified as demonic possession only affects females as it's not actually possession and the Three Heroes that slew Diablos were all women.
  • Battle Harem: They are an elite organization of female assassins, some of whom are in love with their leader Cid/Shadow with all other members holding a deep admiration towards him.
  • Catchphrase: "We are the Shadow Garden. We lurk in the darkness and hunt down shadows." - Following Shadow's lead, several members of the Shadow Garden have adopted this phrase whenever someone asks for their name and/or objective.
  • Child Soldier: Many members were children or teens suffering from Demonic Possession, who are now trained into soldiers.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Due to being a relatively new organization compared to the centuries-old Cult of Diabolos, the Shadow Garden is outmatched in terms of manpower, political power, and influence. This forces the Shadow Garden to covertly sabotage the Cult at various opportunities and increase their own power, in hopes of toppling the Cult at some point in the future.
  • Covert Group with Mundane Front: While the Shadow Garden exists as a covert group, it has a public front as the "Mitsugoshi Company", a relatively new but highly successful trading company known for its innovative products. The wealth that is generated from the Mitsugoshi Company's business success helps fund the Shadow Garden's operations.
  • Cult of Personality: Due to Cid/Shadow being the one to discover the cure for Demonic Possession, being the source of "Shadow Wisdom", and having more power than anything else in the world. Most of Shadow Garden worships and reveres their leader as an infallible being who can foresee the future and is nigh-invulnerable with them justifying some of his actions as part of an act or a plan so complex they couldn't comprehend until its end. They repeat his Pre-Asskicking One-Liner and Pre-Mortem One-Liner quotes like religious scripture. They formed an entire culture around his knowledge and teachings. They've rebuilt an ancient city in his honor. The more extreme members of the organization believe Shadow is a God in Human Form. This fanaticism the point they form a secret Renegade Splinter Faction under the leadership of one of the Seven Shadows, Zeta.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Despite how sinister they look, they're at worst Pay Evil unto Evil and are saving the world from the Cult of Diablos and other threats.
  • Dark Secret: The Shadow Garden will do everything in its power to prevent the people from finding out these two things. The first is that the Mitsugoshi is their front and the second is that Cid is Shadow.
  • The Dreaded: They became such a threat that even the Cult of Diablos fears them. By volume 5, their achievements alone, like subduing Elisabeth on a Red Moon, make every nation fear them. Alexia herself shudders at the thought that the various powers will have to lick their boots to curry favor from them and the Head Librarian, an agent of the Cult himself, confidently declares in his dying breath that the whole group are the "strongest people in the world".
  • Egocentric Team Naming: Their leader goes by the name of "Shadow", the whole organization is known as "Shadow Garden", and the highest-ranking members are the "Seven Shadows". Then again, this probably has less to do with Cid being egocentric and more with him being terribly uncreative when it comes to naming things.
  • Fantastic Rank System: Subverted. Despite the members of the Shadow Garden being given numbers as their new identities, the number isn't an indicator of power but rather the order in which individual members joined the organization. Though, given that each member that joined earlier would have had more time to train, the numbers do end up serving a good power level measuring, as each set of 100 tends to be a good deal stronger than the next, but there are individuals, like 559, whose strength is so great that they can defeat other numbers, regardless of their high numerical difference.
  • Fantastic Recruitment Drive: Due to the need to strengthen their numbers in order to fight against the Cult of Diablos, Alpha went on a very aggressive recruitment spree, as she rapidly expanded the Shadow Garden's membership by finding and recruiting other demon-possessed girls for their cause. When Rose joined she was numbered "666", which means they managed to recruit over hundreds of members around two years.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: They were once frail and helpless kids turning into mindless creatures due to demonic possession or sometimes such as with Alpha had already transformed. Now, even their weaker members are still highly lethal combatants and their stronger members routinely massacre most of what the Cult can throw at them.
  • Good Is Not Soft: They fight for justice (well, and their leader's whims), but they have zero qualms with brutally torturing and killing their enemies.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Due to the efforts of the Cult Of Diabolos, particularly Lutheran Barnett, the organization is seen as a renegade armed group and is wanted by the Kingdom. During the Red Moon Arc, Marie's companions are skeptical of Shadow rescuing them and Yukime brands them as a mysterious armed group.
  • Heroic Lineage: All of them are descendants of the Three Heroes to at least some extent, as "demonic possession" is actually due to the Three Heroes having been implanted with cells from Diablos by the Cult, with this mutative 'curse' afflicting their female descendants. This is also why more or less all of them have at least decent magical abilities.
  • Home Base: Their initial base was a Ghost Town in the middle of the woods. When it became too small to accommodate their growing numbers, they moved to the lost kingdom Alexandria after Shadow managed to defeat the Mist Dragon thus granting their base its protection, which keeps it hidden from the world.
  • Hope Bringer: According to King Klaus Midgar, they are seen as the last hope to take down the Cult of Diabolos since they are the cult's first opposition that didn't go down immediately and even give the cult several setbacks.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: Shadow is often surprised at how hard his subordinates work.
Shadow: Is the word restraint in any of their vocabularies?
  • I Have Many Names: Members can be called by the name of their former identity, the number they received from Shadow Garden, and a possible third name for their new identity. The Numbers take this further since they originally had normal numbers before being given Greek letters as names upon their Rank Up. Not to mention the monikers the Seven Shadows received from Shadow.
  • I Owe You My Life: All members feel indebted to Shadow since without him, the cure for Demonic Possession would have never been discovered and they would have wasted their lives away as rotting heaps of flesh. As Master of Garden shows, whenever Alpha or Epsilon cure someone, they explicitly mention that Shadow is the one who discovered the cure and that they should also feel indebted to him.
  • Interspecies Friendship: Shadow Garden has humans, elves, and therianthropes as members yet there is no Fantastic Racism between them and they work well with each other with most of the conflict between members being vitriolic or a difference between ideologies. In Master of Garden this was actually noted by Elizabeth, who considers a society like Shadow Garden to be the ideal she wants her haven for vampires to become.
  • It Gets Easier: Some of the Shadow Garden members aren't really used to fighting and killing in their first times, which Beta contemplates and is empathetic of due to also sharing similar problems until Cid tells her stories to cheer her up.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: They will always follow Shadow's orders regardless of their own opinions about it and his vagueness especially since they see him as their all-knowing and all-powerful leader, which makes all resistance against him useless. Thankfully, Cid is mostly oblivious to how much influence he holds over them and usually does tasks himself.
  • N.G.O. Superpower: They have connections everywhere, have a formidable private army, take a kingdom's long-abandoned former capital as their base, and have considerable resources and wealth thanks to their front organization Mitsugoshi.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: After graduating from basic training, members are allowed to personalize the appearance of their slime suit so long as it remains predominantly black, with gold livery, and purple for decorative accessories.
  • Parental Abandonment: Nearly every member was disinherited and abandoned by their parents due to their demonic possession.
  • Pent-Up Power Peril: The Demon Possession that afflicts the women who became members of the Shadow Garden manifests itself as a form of magical overload that leads to the afflicted suffering from physical degeneration as it progresses, thus leaving the afflicted to become a lump of flesh until they die. The Demon Possession can be cured by magic, though the exact technique to do so was lost until Cid accidentally managed to heal Alpha. A side-effect of it is that the afflicted's magic power will increase after being cured.
  • Power Trio: Taking inspiration from Cid's metaphor that three arrows combined are stronger than one. Their members are usually paired up in teams of three so that they can support each other and cover each other's weaknesses. Examples include numbers 664 to 666, with Rose being number 666 and the implication that the unseen number 710 is paired with numbers 711 and 712, who are Millia and Akane respectively.
  • Quantity vs. Quality: Despite being a relatively new organization compared to the Cult of Diabolos and the other kingdoms, the Shadow Garden's members have shown far greater power and skill compared to their forces. This is a combination of the fact that all of the Shadow Garden's members are young women who were cured of Demonic Possession, which in turn increased their magical power, and being given far superior training by the Shadow, and later the Seven Shadows for newer members.
  • Recruitment by Rescue: The members of Shadow Garden are girls, who suffered from Demonic Possession before being saved by Shadow Garden. The only exception is Akane, who is essentially Kidnapped by the Call and has no choice but to join due to being unable to return home.
  • Rescue Romance: Overlapping with I Owe You My Life, some of them have fallen in love with Cid.
  • Revenge: Aside from repaying Shadow and his organization for saving them, they also joined to avenge the suffering they went through.
  • Secret-Keeper: Most of the Shadow Garden members know that Cid is Shadow
  • Shrouded in Myth: As a relatively unknown organization, most of the public is generally unaware of the exact details of the Shadow Garden's existence beyond what the authorities have told them, and even they do not have much information. Even the Cult of Diablos, for all of their connections, is only aware of the Shadow being the leader of the Shadow Garden, the Seven Shadows being his most powerful and trusted subordinates, and that the Garden is exclusively made of female members (Shadow excluded).
  • Spy Catsuit: Their uniforms don't leave much to the imagination.
  • Technologically Advanced Foe: Aside from their prowess, the Shadow Garden has access to technologies far more advanced than their contemporaries due to the "Shadow Wisdom". Rose Oriana even comments that even the Slime Bodysuit itself is a groundbreaking invention enough that it would revolutionize the entire world, especially the knights and military.
  • That Man Is Dead: Due to being discarded by their family, friends, and associates along with becoming the Unperson, most members of the Shadow Garden choose to fully discard their former identities and names, to distance themselves from their former lives and embrace their new identities as members of the Shadow Garden.
  • Training from Hell: Each member undergoes a hellish training regime led by Lambda, who was once a military instructor. One training regime for newbies includes being forced to survive in a forest filled with monsters that can kill them
  • Underestimating Badassery: The cult did not bother taking out Shadow Garden under the belief they pose no threat to them. Five years later when Cid starts going to school, they have already grown immensely and are the first real threat to the cult's existence.
  • Undying Loyalty: All of them are utterly loyal to the end to their leader and master Shadow whom they practically worship, some of them even love him.
  • Vetinari Job Security: The Midgar Kingdom realized that if Mitsugoshi were to suddenly leave the kingdom, their economy will be left in shambles that they immediately negotiated with them after the events of the Corporate Warfare Arc.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: The members of Shadow Garden won't take it kindly if you insult or tarnish Shadow himself, even if the man himself doesn't care.
  • You Are Number 6: Except for Shadow himself and the Seven Shadows (who are instead named after Greek letters), each of their members is given a number in the order they were recruited.

Numbers

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/teis_numbers.jpg
The Numbers are particularly strong and talented members of Shadow Garden, who have authority below those of Seven Shadows. They either work directly under their superiors or are put in charge of certain tasks and/or operations.

    In General
  • Alphabetical Theme Naming: Just like the Seven Shadows, they are also named after Greek letters.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It is unclear if all seats of the Numbers are filled considering the fact there is an Omega, the last letter of the Greek alphabet yet Epsilon told 559 that she could potentially promoted to a position below the Seven Shadows, which is highly implied to her becoming a part of the Numbers
  • And the Rest: When Eta is surrounded by Beta, Epsilon, Nu, Lambda, Chi, and Omega when they try to prevent her from experimenting on Akane, she lumps the Numbers in the "many more" category much to their anger.
  • "Do It Yourself" Theme Tune: The voice actresses of the Numbers shown in the anime (Nu, Lambda, Chi, and Omega) sing the ending theme of season 2.
  • Early Instalment Weirdness: When Zinaida was recruited into Shadow Garden, she was immediately given the designation of Lambda, which gives the implication that the Numbers are made of the first 17 members recruited by the Seven Shadows. The recruitment of future members shows that they started out as normal members before ranking up to become part of the Numbers.
  • Elite Mook: The Numbers are the individuals just below the Seven Shadows in power and influence within the Shadow Garden and like them are also represented by Greek Letters.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Despite being called Numbers, they are all named after letters from the Greek alphabet.
  • Older Sidekick: Many Numbers are a few years older than the Seven Shadows with some of them even once having official positions yet they obey their orders without hesitation.
  • Rank Up: The majority of them were initially normal members, who due to their talents and skills were made part of the Numbers. For example, Omega and Chi were initially No. 111 and 122 when they joined Shadow Garden.

    Lambda

Lambda

Other Names: Zinaida (Former Identity)

Voiced by: Ikumi Hasegawa (Japanese), Liz Arends (English)

Debut: Volume 2 (Light Novel), Episode 20 (Anime)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lambda_anime.png

A dark-skinned female elf who is in charge of training new members.

  • Adapted Out: She has yet to make an appearance in the manga adaptation due to her introduction being cut.
  • Badass Longcoat: Her slime suit takes the form of a military trench coat and has Clothing Combat functionality.
  • Cleavage Window: Her trench coat leaves a fashionable opening to display her cleavage and her Valentine's Day outfit in Master of Garden has an even bigger one.
  • Commissar Cap: Her outfit includes a peaked cap due to her military upbringing and drill instructor role within Shadow Garden.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: She's a strict, no-nonsense training instructor. Having once been part of the military explains her behavior.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While she is a Drill Sergeant Nasty known for her strictness. Even she thinks executing 666 is too much due to the complicated circumstances surrounding her betrayal.
  • Eyes Always Shut: A rather unique downplayed example since only her right eye is always closed. The ending of the second season of the anime however shows that the mark of the cult is engraved on it.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Lambda may be harsh but she is a good person at her core and genuinely wants those training under her to improve. The anime also shows that she is worried about 666's betrayal and is downcast after believing that Shadow will execute her for her disobedience.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: In Master of Garden, she reluctantly dresses up in a cute Valentine's Day-themed outfit with a Cleavage Window to help motivate Alpha with her chocolate for Cid.
  • Sole Survivor: By the time the Seven Shadows infiltrated the base where Lambda was kept, she was the only surviving possessed while the others died.
  • Whip of Dominance: Lambda is a strict, no-nonsense training instructor, and wields a whip in combat to reflect how disciplined-minded she is.

    Mu

Mu

Debut: Volume 6 (Light Novel)

A dark elf, posing as a doctor at Midgar Academy.
  • Hospital Hottie: She's currently posing as Midgar Academy's nurse to watch over Claire Kagenou.

    Nu

Nu

Other Names: Nicoletta Marquez (Former Identity), No. 93 (Original Designation)

Debut: Volume 1 (Light Novel), Chapter 7 (Manga), Episode 6 (Anime)

Voiced by: Maaya Uchida (Japanese), Cat Thomas (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nu_anime_2.png

A former human noblewoman who is the personal assistant and bodyguard of Gamma. She specializes in disguises, slime cosmetic surgery and interrogation.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: The light novel and web novel have Nu only optioning to kill her former fiancé if he learned the truth about Shadow's identity. In the anime, Nu is seemingly willing to murder him on sight if Cid hadn't arrived and talked her down.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Despite not having the immense strength and mana reserves her superior has, Nu was assigned to handle all of Gamma's fights due to the latter's downright abysmal hand-eye coordination and technique of harnessing such power. This is so fights will end way quicker, more efficiently, and less humiliating.
  • Cute and Psycho: Can keep a cute and pleasant smile on her face even as she cuts the fingers off your hand.
  • Exalted Torturer: Seems to be Shadow Garden's interrogation specialist as she will use any means to get information out of members of the Cult of Diablos. And if you soil Shadow's name, expect Cold-Blooded Torture as a mercy.
  • Extreme Doormat: In the past, she complied with everything her parents told her to do. After joining Shadow Garden, she decided to be more independent.
  • Fallen Princess: Nu was the daughter of a marquess who took her life and family for granted. Her happy life turned around when she began suffering from demonic possession. She no longer has a home but she cherishes her comrades and master who share her goal.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: At least in battle. While Nu doesn't match Gamma's intellect when acting as her assistant, she is the better fighter when it comes to being her bodyguard due to Gamma's extreme clumsiness.
  • Leg Focus: One of the chapters focuses on the details of her lovely legs.
  • Master of Disguise: Nu is an expert in disguising her figure to avoid detection and infiltrate enemy bases. When she meets Cid in the Academy, he only recognizes her because he remembers her voice. She is also an expert in altering slimes to change people's faces. She does this in Volume 2 to turn Cid into Mundane Mann.
  • The Nondescript: Nu has inconspicuous brown hair and she herself thinks that her face looks bland, which makes it easy for her to disguise herself.
  • Only Sane Man: In the "Eminence of Shadow Gaiden" manga, she acts as this to Beta whenever the latter goes Fangirl over Shadow.
  • Pet the Dog: After discovering her defeated former fiancé, Nu contemplates whether to find out if he's alive or just leave him for dead. Ultimately, she decides to check him for a heartbeat and confirms he is alive. However, she would have killed him in a heartbeat if he had been conscious while she and Shadow were talking, to protect Shadow's identity.
  • Retcon: When Gamma introduces Nu to Cid, the former states that Nu has just joined Shadow Garden. Master of Garden shows that she was recruited as No. 93, which makes her one of the older members although considering how quickly Shadow Garden grew in a few years, it could also be a case of Exact Words.
  • Teen Genius: Despite being one of Shadow Garden's newest members, she was quickly able to Rank Up as part of the Numbers.
  • Token Human: Aside from Shadow, she was the first human to have joined Shadow Garden, which is why the Seven Shadows specifically trained her to become part of the Numbers as a representative of her kind.
  • Unperson: Her existence has been erased from the records of her marquess family.
  • Vague Age: Averted. Due to her makeup skills, it's tough to guess her age, and she does not wish to tell Cid how old she really is when he asks her. However, in Volume 1, the narration points out that if her life hadn't gone downhill, she would have been attending the academy in her second year, which means she is roughly one year older than Cid, however Master of Garden has her age as 18.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Shadow is her living god. Anyone who is a threat to him or even insults his mob character is in for a beating or worse.
    • In her first scene, Nu takes notice of Cid getting teased for being dumped by the princess by Cid's male friends. Her solution is to personally escort Cid to take a survey and leave his two friends in the dust. To add insult to injury, Nu subtly mocks them while doing so.
    • Later in the same arc, disguised as a student, Nu is walking around the campus together with Cid like a couple, when she hears a student insulting Cid. She plans on beating up this student later for ruining her quality time with Cid and insulting him (and for constantly hitting on her back in her Academy days).
    • She'll kill anyone who learns Cid's identity, even her former fiancé.

    Pi

Pi

Debut: Volume 6 (Light Novel)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pipng.png

A husky-like therianthrope, who is Delta's direct subordinate.

  • Birds of a Feather: It is quite fitting that Delta's subordinate is another dog-like therianthrope of low intelligence.
  • Dogs Are Dumb: She's a husky-like therianthrope that is shockingly way dumber than Delta. Even Cid is taken aback by this.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Alpha's Organization Management Diary implies she along with Delta was able to find Zeta or came so close, that Zeta decided to simply report to Alpha to stop them from tailing her.
  • Scarily Competent Tracker: Her specialty which Delta admits is far superior to hers. According to Alpha's Organization Management Diary, she was either able to find Zeta or came very close to doing so, though she did have Delta with her as well.

    Sigma

Sigma

An unseen member mentioned by Beta in Master of Garden
  • The Ghost: While Beta mentions Sigma, Sigma herself is not directly shown.

    Chi

Chi

Other Names: Karen von Herzog (Former Identity), No. 111 (Original Designation)

Debut: Volume 6 (Light Novel), Episode 11 (Anime)

Voiced by: Mayu Minami (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kai_anime_7.png

An elf who is a direct subordinate of Epsilon.

Originally a First Named Child of the Cult of Diablos and one of Velgalta's Seven Swords. Upon her Demonic Possession, her family was exterminated and she was forced on the run, which caused her to meet Gamma and Eta, who took her to Shadow Garden's base. There she would realize the truth and become member No. 111 before eventually ranking up to become part of the Numbers.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: She made her appearance during the Oriana Civil War Arc in the web novel and in Volume 6 of the light novel. In the anime, she appeared at the Holy Ground arc.
  • An Arm and a Leg: She used herself as a Human Shield to protect Gamma and Eta from Sergey, which caused her leg to be severed. However, it quickly regenerated due to her suffering from Demonic Possession at the time.
  • Bad "Bad Acting": When pretending to be a ghost to Annerose, her acting is stiff and awkward yet despite this, Annerose believes every word of it.
  • The Bartender: She becomes the barista in charge of Mitsugoshi's new bar in volume 6.
  • Bifauxnen: As shown in the anime, her boyish looks swoon some women. When infiltrating Oriana Castle along with other members of Shadow Garden, she is the only one wearing a butler uniform, while the others disguise themselves as maids.
  • Break the Haughty: She only shed her name and fully became a member of Shadow Garden after Alpha completely dominated her in combat, along with having gone through many humiliating tasks throughout Alexandria.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: She alluded to in the first volume when Nu thinks of a Shadow Garden member who used to be a First Named Child of the cult of Diabolos. Master of Garden shows how she defected from the cult to join Shadow Garden.
  • Cult Defector: She was originally a First Named Child of the Cult of Diabolos until the cult betrayed her and her family, leading to her joining Shadow Garden.
  • Eyepatch of Power: She wears an eyepatch over the right side of her face, after losing her eye following her excommunication from the Cult.
  • Heroic BSoD: Chi suffers a complete breakdown upon discovering that the Cult had experimented on possessed infants and she indirectly helped them. Thankfully, Omega was there to pull her out.
  • Relatively Flimsy Excuse: In the web novel, she pretends to be one of Cid's relatives during the Oriana Civil War arc.
  • Remember the New Guy?: For those who haven't read the web novel or seen the anime, her debut in volume 6 of the light novel comes off as this since Cid remembers seeing her at Mitsugoshi once.
  • Revenge: One of the reasons she joined Shadow Garden is to get revenge on Sergey for the death of her family. Epsilon even notes that she is less enthusiastic over missions unrelated the the cult member. That is until she found out about the Cult's experimentations on possessed babies, giving her an additional purpose in destroying the Cult to ensure the safety of future newborns. However, she does not care if she personally ends Sergey's life and is satisfied so long he is slain by Shadow Garden, which does happen when Shadow blasts Sergey into space with his "Rising Atomic".
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Cid believes this to be the case for Chi due to her nervous behavior around him oblivious to how much everyone in Shadow Garden refers to him.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: When she blows her cover towards Annerose and reveals herself, Annerose concludes that since Karen was stated to be dead, she must be a ghost.
  • Those Two Girls: She is usually seen with her partner Omega.
  • Token Good Teammate: To the Cult of Diabolos. Unlike so many who joined the cult to pursue their own selfish interests, Chi thought she was doing the right thing in protecting her country. She even protected Gamma from getting harmed by a cult member. Part of the reason why it took her a while to fully join Shadow Garden is due to her conflicted emotions about having served the cult loyally.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Downplayed; While she knew that Shadow is The Leader of Shadow Garden along with being more powerful than the Seven Shadows, she certainly didn't expect the power gap to be that immense. Leaving her shaken at the sight of Shadow's "Rising Atomic", which blasted Sergey into space.

    Omega

Omega

Other Names: Olba (Former Identity), No. 122 (Original Designation)

Debut: Volume 6 (Light Novel), Episode 11 (Anime)

Voiced by: Ryoko Maekawa (Japanese), Skyler Sinclair (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/omega_anime_3.png

A half-dark-elf who is a direct subordinate of Epsilon.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: She made her appearance during the Oriana Civil War Arc in the web novel and in Volume 6 of the light novel. In the anime, she appeared at the Holy Ground arc.
  • The Gadfly: Upon being reunited with Lambda, who was formerly her fellow instructor, she teases her by calling Lambda by her original name. Similarly, she teases No. 111 over her Bad "Bad Acting" when pretending to be a ghost for Annerose.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: She does this to Chi when she is shaken over the fact the cult is experimenting on possessed infants by reminding her to protect those in the present rather than dwelling on the past.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Omega is noted to be a half-elf.
  • The Quiet One: She is mentioned by Cid in the web novel due to how quiet she is towards him.
  • Rebellious Spirit: Omega was an insubordinate rule-breaker, that butted heads with the more by-the-book Lambda. She was this for a while, following being rescued and healed of her possession, before eventually submitting to Shadow Garden's doctrine by Epsilon. However, it took witnessing Shadow's overwhelming might to truly make her more humble and more respectful towards her comrades and superiors.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: In the web novel, Cid believes this to be the case for Omega even though she was just behaving as a subordinate should do. Although, the Secret Test of Character he gave does show that the assessment is not completely wrong. Seven Chronicles shows that she has a casual attitude toward everyone including her superiors such as the Seven Shadows and Lambda, whom she recognizes, until witnessing Shadow's sheer power causes her to become more humble.
  • Those Two Girls: She is usually seen with her partner Chi.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Downplayed; While she knew that Shadow is The Leader of Shadow Garden along with being more powerful than the Seven Shadows, she certainly didn't expect the power gap to be that immense. Leaving her in shock and awe at the sight of Shadow's "Rising Atomic", which blasted Sergey into space. After becoming one of the Numbers along with Chi, she admits that beforehand, she doubted Shadow Garden could make a change in the world despite their strength and resources.
  • Wake-Up Call: What caused her to truly devote herself to Shadow Garden's cause was witnessing Shadow's overwhelming strength, which made her realize that the organization can change the world.

Other Members

     559

559 (Victoria)

Debut: Volume 4 (Light Novel), Chapter 40 (Manga), Episode 29 (Anime)

Voiced by: Miku Itō (Japanese), Molly Searcy (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/victoria_559_anime.png

A woman who was once hailed as a saint. Saved from the possession by Cid, Victoria decided to devote her life to him and Shadow Garden. She has strength that matches the Seven Shadows, which is why she is expected to take leadership eventually, but her fanaticism makes her a bit of a loose cannon. She takes over 664's squad and gathers information about the Cult of Diablos' activities in Oriana.

  • The Ace: Excluding the Seven Shadows, Victoria's power and skills surpass that of many members of Shadow Garden. It helps that she was personally healed by Shadow. Even before being cured of her possession by Shadow and receiving his power, she was able to fight toe to toe with young Zeta and Alpha.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Her hair color differs from each medium she appears in; in the LN, her hair is described as strawberry blonde, in the Master of Garden, her hair while she's young is shown to be platinum blonde and pink when she's older; while in the Anime, her hair is shown to be pink.
  • Almighty Janitor: Victoria is just a regular member of the Shadow Garden, yet her combat prowess is stated to be comparable to the Seven Shadows. However, this is zig-zagged, as it is shown that she does have a bit higher authority compared to regular members, as she is capable of selecting other members to accompany her on missions, and reports directly to the Seven Shadows. It's even stated by Epsilon that she is a candidate for the "new" Seven Shadows, that is being developed.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Loses an arm during a fight but she got it regenerated thanks to Cid.
  • Bad Boss: She is shown to be unwilling to listen to her squadmates' suggestions, even after they find themselves overwhelmed by the Cult, opting to fight them rather then retreat and guarantee her squadmates' safety. Ironically she was once the opposite when leading the Templars, showing great care for her subordinates.
  • Blood Knight: When learning that the area that she and her team were about to investigate was occupied by the Cult of Diabolos, she smiled, even ignoring the original mission's parameters of reconnaissance, as she led her team to engage the Cult, despite her squadmates' objection.
  • Character Tics: Tends to cling on to Shadow/Cid's coat sleeve with Puppy-Dog Eyes, reverting to how she was when Cid originally healed her, breaking from the hard-driven and no-nonsense persona she's cultivated as an up-and-coming member of Shadow Garden. Cid finds it nostalgic.
  • Corrupt the Cutie: Victoria's past wasn't depicted for a while but one of Volume 4's end cards mentions that she used to be called "The Saint" in her country before being discarded due to her possession. Fenrir even comments on volume 5 on being curious on how would her country react when they learn that not only she was cured of her possession but now she's part of the (known) most dangerous organization, the Shadow Garden.
    • Then Master of Garden reveals this trope is Averted; despite at the time being a young girl with a saint-like demeanor that was publically known as the incarnation of the Goddess Beatrix's will, behind the scenes she lead a cult-like organization of Church extremists called the Templars that engaged in aggressively culling the possessed. While much more compassionate and calm at the time, even then hints of her darker nature could be seen and come the present day she's a brutal Yandere Overzealous Underling. Ultimately, Victoria seems to have always been a dangerous fanatic.
  • Decomposite Character: 559 was created for the LN to take over some of The Worf Effect duties from Epsilon— she's a powerful member of Shadow Garden said to be on par with the Seven Shadows who, like them, was personally healed by Shadow, and it is 559, rather than Epsilon, who gets gravely wounded by high-ranking Cult members while being pursued. She also shares Epsilon's traits of Pride and fanatical devotion to Shadow. 559 and Epsilon engage in a mild attempt at Teamwork Seduction, giving Cid a tandem after-bath shoulder and foot massage, which Cid notes that Epsilon used to do after serving him tea in the early days of Shadow Garden.
  • Determinator Against a whole wave of cult members including several First Children, she kept fighting for three days straight before she was saved by Shadow, who healed her wounds.
  • Dissonant Serenity: She was this as the leader of the Templars as she retained a pleasant, saint-like demeanor at nearly all times whether it be during battle, talking about purging heretics, or declaring to her organization that Shadow Garden must be cleansed. During her boss battle in Chapter 15 of Sevens Shadows Chronicles her movements are dance-like and during her special attack cut-in she dances and smiles even as her surrounding turned red. And when her older self was made playable in the game this trait remains, cheerily smiling as she thinks of Shadow while covered in blood.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Rose acknowledges how beautiful Victoria is.
  • Faith–Heel Turn: She's the former sacred prophet of the Church who underwent Despair Event Horizon in the aftermath of her Demon Possession, as well as nearly being executed by those that she trusted. Because of what happened her, it is implied that she lost her faith in the goddess and adopted a far more sinful lifestyle, becoming a very ruthless member of Shadow Garden, and killing those who she believes to be their enemies without hesitation or remorse. She is also shown to become far more lustful, as she is very eager to become physically intimate with Shadow and become his lover. While she did lose her faith, she had not lost her religious inclinations, as she took to revering the Shadow as a God in Human Form. She also becomes part of Zeta's splinter faction that seeks to make Shadow into an immortal god that will rule the world.
  • Foil: To Rose. Both of them were important figures that fell from grace due to their tragic incidents and have feelings for Cid/Shadow. However, it's their feelings towards both personas is what sets them apart. In regards to the Cid persona, 559 sees Cid as nothing more than a facade to the real Shadow while Rose is deeply in love with him. For Shadow, 559 is a fanatical devotee to him while Rose sees Shadow as her inspiration and respects him.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: She is seen near the end of anime episode 20, dueling another member of Shadow Garden around the Monument of Shadow at the lost capital of Alexandria.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Cid remembers "Victoria-chan" as a "weak girl who wouldn't hurt a fly" who clung onto his coat sleeve with Puppy-Dog Eyes when he healed her and is surprised when he meets her again, surrounded by a hundred corpses of the Cult of Diablos members she's "cruelly slaughtered." Master of Garden reveals this trope is actually averted, as even as a young girl she competently led the radical Templars who believed in exterminating the possessed and was powerful enough to fight young Zeta and Alpha on her own, Alpha remarking at the time that she was nearly her equal.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Master of Garden reveals that she was the leader of the Templars who sought to exterminate the possessed and eventually acts as the Arc Villain for Seven Shadows Chronicles, even serving as the boss of Chapter 15.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Victoria is surprisingly quick to write Rose off, but she's not entirely wrong to claim Rose turning traitor, since she did turn against them to protect her mother.
  • Jerkass to One: With the exception of her beloved Shadow and the Seven Shadows, 559 is shown to be abrasive and dismissive of others. But she is especially harsh to Rose Oriana/666, due to believing that she is unworthy of Shadow's attention, favor and the power that he bestowed her; as Rose is the only other person, outside of the Seven Shadows and Victoria herself to have been healed by Shadow himself. Her dislike only intensifies after Rose stops Victoria from killing her mother, as she declares Rose a traitor to the Shadow Garden.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: She rushed head-on to confront the Cult members that they encountered, without bothering to come up with a plan of attack. However, it is noted that she did so in order to retrieve a valuable item that the Cult recovered before they could escape with it. In a bit of Irony, while young she once chided a Templar under her command for rushing in carelessly.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: She seems to be way too trigger happy, as the solution to most of her problems boils down to killing them:
    • The Cult recovered a valuable item of interest? Kill them all and seize the item!
    • A fellow Shadow Garden member disobeyed orders by stopping you from killing their mother? Declare her a traitor and promise to kill her and failing that, advocate that Shadow execute her for her "disobedience".
    • While it's unknown yet if she actually set the Templars' overall goals as she seemed to ultimately answer to higher authorities within the Church, she still once lead an organization whose answer to the problem of the possessed by exterminating them. At least in this case she started harboring doubts after learning (to her shock) that possession is curable.
  • Numerological Motif: Her assigned number in Shadow Garden, "559" has a meaning, in terms of numerology. Its meaning, at the angelic level, "symbolizes a period of change and progress. It guides you to put aside regressive beliefs and make positive changes in your life. It indicates a time of growth, progress and fulfillment."
  • One-Man Army: She demonstrated her significant combat abilities by killing off an entire group of First Children, and even killing off three cult leaders among them before being overwhelmed by Kouadoi.
  • Red Baron: Before becoming a member of the Shadow Garden, she was a clergy girl known by the title of the "Saint", as she preached the doctrine of the Holy Church, as well as the legends of the heroes that defeated Diabolos.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Cid describes 559 as "a platinum-pink haired girl I knew" that he'd met by chance on one of his past excursions, who he cured and later turned over to Alpha. She'd already had a reputation as a powerful up-and-comer in Shadow Garden, on a trajectory to stand among the Seven Shadows, yet nothing had been mentioned about her for 3 volumes. Justified in Cid's case since he doesn't bother retaining info unrelated to his Eminence in Shadow goals.
  • Signature Headgear: She wears a unique headdress that has two pointy horns as part of its design and they are used to clasp a veil behind her head, giving a nod to her original role as a clergy girl.
  • Sixth Ranger: She was the eighth person to receive Super-Empowering from Cid and strong enough to join the Seven Shadows, but not officially part of the inner circle because she joined years after Shadow Garden was established. Nonetheless, Epsilon mentions she has a plan to get Victoria into the Seven Shadows, and Victoria is privy to leadership information because she is allowed to attend executive briefings.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Is this amongst Shadow Garden due to being an overzealous underling, who completely worships Shadow like he is a god. The anime especially empathizes this over the fact that she is the only member that wanted Rose dead for her betrayal unlike other members, who understood her reasons and only resigned themselves upon the news Shadow would take care of her.
  • Yandere: She is enamored with Shadow and considers herself to be his loyal servant, as she stated that she will mercilessly eliminate anyone who she feels in undeserving of his grace. Naturally she has no qualms becoming part of Zeta's splinter faction to make Shadow immortal.
  • Young and in Charge: Master of Garden reveals that despite being a young girl around the same age of the Seven Shadows at the time, behind her public role as the Church's sacred prophet she was the leader of the Templars, a radical faction with the Church that believed in exterminating the possessed. In a case of great Irony she displayed both Benevolent Boss tendencies and actually competent tactical skills back then, disapproving of how a subordinate went Leeroy Jenkins with his men and counselling a fearful Templar.

  • Big Guy, Little Guy: 664's the Little Guy to 665 and Rose's Big Guy.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: As a straight-laced and serious person, 664 is the Tsukkomi to 665's Boke.
  • Butt-Monkey: Nothing goes her way even when she's in charge. There is no mission where she makes it out unscathed.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She (or an elf with a similar look) makes a cameo in episode 13 of the anime as one of the many employees greeting Cid when he visits Mitsugoshi.
  • Ensign Newbie: She is placed in charge of a squad that includes 665 and 666 by Lambda.
  • Failed a Spot Check: In the anime, she along with her teammates resided in the same inn as Cid yet despite sitting right next to him, she completely failed to see that he is their leader Shadow. This is justified since she never met Shadow before.
  • Foil: She, along with 665, are this to Margaret. She is Rose's teammate within Shadow Garden while Margaret has been friends with Rose since childhood. However, Margaret turns on Rose after the latter's perceived betrayal since she doesn't know what caused Rose's course of action, while 664 still cares for Rose despite her mistakes and fully understands why she did it.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: She is rather strict, but actually has a very caring side. While she reprimands 666 for not following her orders entirely, she is simply worried and feels responsible for her.
    • When Victoria marks 666 as a traitor who needs to be punished, she cries out in 666's defense in front of Shadow.
    • When Shadow Garden chooses to defend the Oriana Kingdom, 664, along with 665 immediately went to 666's aid.
  • The Leader: She became in charge of a team comprised of herself, 665, and 666 due to her leadership skills.
  • Meido: She along with 665 disguises themselves in maid uniforms to help 666 in her new role as queen of Oriana.
  • Only Sane Man: She feels she is this when leading her team due to 665 being more concerned with eating and 666 not having thrown away her past like the others.
  • Those Two Girls: She is usually seen with 665, which is justified since they are teammates. They are also the only characters that share an Appendix.

665

Voiced by: Hina Yomiya (Japanese), Christie Gudry (English)

Debut: Volume 2 (Light Novel), Chapter 31 (Manga), Episode 20 (Anime)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/665_anime_2.png

An elf and one of the newest members of the Shadow Garden. She was assigned to work with 664, and later 666 upon her induction into the Shadow Garden.

  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: As a laidback and Cloudcuckoolander person, 665 is the Boke to 664's Tsukkomi.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: According to Beta, she represents intelligence amongst the Power Trio she forms with 664 and 666 yet she spends most of her time eating and snacking even when going on missions.
  • Butt-Monkey: Granted she was facing some tough opponents but the end result is always her suffering major injuries.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: She tends to say or do things that might be inappropriate for the situation. The anime exemplifies this by introducing her eating food during combat training while Lambda could see her. 664 was frantically trying to make her stop.
  • Failed a Spot Check: In the anime, she along with her teammates resided in the same inn as Cid yet despite sitting near him, she completely failed to see that he is their leader Shadow. This is justified since she never met Shadow before.
  • Foil: She, along with 664, are this to Margaret. She is Rose's teammate within Shadow Garden while Margaret has been friends with Rose since childhood. However, Margaret turns on Rose after the latter's perceived betrayal since she doesn't know what caused Rose's course of action, while 665 still cares for Rose despite her mistakes and fully understands why she did it.
  • The Medic: She's at least knowledgeable enough to know Claire's injuries are severe enough to need medical attention.
  • Meido: She along with 664 disguises themselves in maid uniforms to help 666 in her new role as queen of Oriana.
  • Mellow Fellow: 665 is known for her easygoing personality. She does well backing others up.
  • Obsessed with Food: She is usually seen munching on some food despite her leader telling her that they need to focus on the mission
  • Retcon: 665 is identified as a therianthrope when introduced to Rose Oriana in Volume 2. In Volume 4, she's an elf.
  • Those Two Girls: She is usually seen with 664, which is justified since they are teammates. They are also the only characters that share an Appendix.

Rose Oriana

Voiced by: Haruka Shiraishi (Japanese), Donna Bella Litton (English)

"Debut": Volume 2 (Light Novel), Chapter 29 (Manga), Episode 20 (Anime)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rose_oriana_666_anime_9.png

The former princess of the Oriana Kingdom. She joined the Shadow Garden after Mercy Killing her father to free him from being used as a puppet by Perv Asshat. With no other options to save her kingdom, she joined the Shadow Garden to obtain the power to set things right.

For tropes that apply to her before joining Shadow Garden. Click here

  • All for Nothing: The reason why she betrayed Shadow Garden was for the sake of saving her mother only for Shadow to show her that her mother is in cahoots with Perv all along sending her to despair.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: It is subtly implied (or outright confirmed in the individual case of 559) that some members of the Shadow Garden seem to treat her at arm's length due to her choosing not to sever all ties to her past, unlike the rest of the Shadow Garden.
  • Composite Character: Due to her sister Clara from the web novel being Adapted Out, she takes over her role as Oriana's ruler in the Proxy War between Shadow Garden and the Cult of Diablos.
  • Despair Event Horizon: She crosses this upon seeing that her mother was working with the cult all along. This along with having killed her own father, being hated by the people of her country, and her betrayal of Shadow Garden makes her believe she has nothing left except for Cid with her even trying to run away from her problems through elopement with him. However, Cid was able to get her back after a speech that encouraged her to continue following her dream.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: She was already training to be a knight since her childhood after being saved by Stylish Bandit Slayer, but she became even stronger after being cured of Demonic Possession by Shadow and going through harsh training under Lambda.
  • Face Death with Dignity: When Shadow appears before her after she betrays Shadow Garden, she is willing to let her master kill her. However, Shadow instead forces her to face the Awful Truth regarding her mother.
  • Heroic Rematch: During their wedding, she faces off against Perv once more and unlike her failed assassination attempt, she completely overwhelms Perv in their duel.
  • Important Haircut: Upon becoming the new ruler of the Oriana Kingdom, she cuts off her Regal Ringlets to shoulder-length to show off her resolve to become a ruler strong enough to defend her homeland from the Cult of Diablos. The anime changes this so that she immediately has her hair cut upon her induction into Shadow Garden, but recreates her old hairstyle with slime upon agreeing to go with the cult for her mother's safety.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Epsilon and other Shadow Garden members intentionally didn't tell Rose that their assassination target is her mother due to them not wanting her to learn the Awful Truth that her mother is in cahoots with the cult. Cid on the other hand immediately reveals it to her as Shadow.
  • Missed Him by That Much: In the anime, she along with her teammates slept in the same inn Cid resided in during his travels in Oriana, but unlike her teammates, she failed to meet him due to spending her time there sulking in bed over killing her father.
  • New Meat: For a time she was the newest recruit in Shadow Garden and kept getting reprimanded for speaking out of turn or questioning orders.
  • Number of the Beast: She is given the designation, 666, and is the key to awakening the Black Rose, a portal that summons demons from another dimension.
  • Numerological Motif: Her assigned number in Shadow Garden is 666, the Number of the Beast, which is what the cult depicts her as to the world. An evil queen, who forcibly took over the throne by assassinating her father and activating the Black Rose which killed thousands. Only Shadow Garden and the Oriana Kingdom know the truth.
  • Open Secret: Rose's real name and identity are an open secret among the members of the Shadow Garden as most don't mention it until it is specifically brought up when it is needed. The only person who doesn't know about Rose's membership in the Shadow Garden is ironically Cid himself, even though his actions caused her to join them.
  • Parental Sexuality Squick: Played for Drama; The anime has Rose discover her mother's true allegiance when she is making love to Perv.
  • Puppet King: Played With. In volume 5, Alpha discusses with Rose the need to become Oriana Kingdom's leader and Shadow Garden's proxy to thoroughly annihilate the Cult due to the latter's hold on religion. King Midgar and possibly other rulers believe that Shadow is the one, who has true control over Oriana with him following her every step.
  • Regretful Traitor: She reluctantly betrays Shadow Garden for her mother's safety, which forces 559, 664, and 665 to hold off hundreds of cult members. Although several Shadow Garden members understand the dilemma she faced with Omega even considering it too harsh to call it a "betrayal".
  • Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: After being forced to betray Shadow Garden, everyone in Shadow Garden wrote her off as dead the moment Shadow declared that he will take care of her. Naturally, they were rather surprised and confused at the fact Shadow didn't kill her despite managing to meet her.
  • Rightful King Returns: Volume 4 of the light novel is about Rose's return to the Oriana Kingdom and becoming its queen.
  • Royal Rapier: She is the princess and later on queen of her country and transforms her slime weapon into a rapier to fight.
  • Shameful Strip: Lambda, 664 and 665 destroy all of Rose's clothes and possessions following her induction to Shadow Garden.
  • She's Back: After spending a good portion in volume 4 suffering from her Conflicting Loyalty between the life of her mother and Shadow Garden along with desperately wanting to save her country. This cumulates in her reaching the Despair Event Horizon upon seeing the Awful Truth regarding her mother. However, Cid was then able to motivate her to continue following her dream. Now filled with renewed determination and confidence, she confronts Perv once more with her having absolutely no regrets regardless of the outcome.
  • Sixth Ranger: Rose eventually became a member of Shadow Garden following her self-imposed exile.
  • Spotting the Thread: She's one of the individuals who already suspects Cid is Shadow due to him playing "Moonlight Sonata" perfectly in both his guises.
  • Stress Vomit: In the anime, she outright vomits upon discovering that her mother not only sleeps with Perv but has been working with him since the start, her mother even imploring Perv to kill her own daughter once she's no longer useful.
  • Technicolor Magic: Rose's mana is a brilliant gold to showcase her royalty status as the crown princess of Oriana then teal green after Shadow empowers her with his magic to become even stronger.
  • Took a Level in Badass: While she already became stronger thanks to being healed from Demonic Possession by Shadow, which 559 states gives her greater power than members cured by Alpha or Epsilon. She also received the strict training regime all members undergo, which made her strong enough to easily manhandle Perv and even the Stygian Beasts of the Fourth Realm, one of which needs 10 people to even subdue it, during the Oriana Kingdom arc.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: In the web novel, you better beware: She'll slice you down into bits if you so much dare harm Cid. Even Shadow.... in spite of Shadow and Cid being the same person.

Millia

Other Identities: Experiment 227 (Designation by the Cult of Diablos)

Debut: Volume 1 (Light Novel), Chapter 5 (Manga), Episode 5 (Anime)

Voiced by: Yuka Nukui (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/millia_anime.png
prior to the corruption

The daughter of Grease, who suffered from Demonic Possession, was used by the cult as a test subject. In her rampage, she was slain by Alpha in a Mercy Kill. Her remains were then taken by the Loki faction, who resurrected her into a monster designed to kill Shadow. In the battle against her target, he heals her back to a human and is then taken to join Shadow Garden.

  • Age Lift: While the light novel never truly clarified her aside from looking around thirteen, the manga has Grease's last thoughts showing her as a young child, the anime instead has his locket showing her attending Midgar Royal Spellsword Academy, which has the acceptance age of 15 years, which makes her at least 20 years old when Alpha killed her.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Shadow cuts off her mutated right arm before fully healing her. It was then taken by Alpha. By the time, she became 711 her arm was back on her body.
  • And I Must Scream: In her first appearance, it is highly implied that despite her horribly mutated appearance, she still has some consciousness inside her especially since after being enhanced, she kills the scientist experimenting on her, but keeps Alexia alive along with always keeping the dagger she got from her father with her.
  • Back from the Dead: After being killed by Alpha, her remains are taken by the Loki faction, who resurrected her and transformed her into a monster whose only purpose is to kill Shadow.
  • Body Horror:
    • The experiments the cult performed had horrible effects on her body with Alexia being understandably horrified at her appearance:
      • In the manga, she barely looks human at all due to her skinny, dilapidated, and hairless appearance along with having a snout and clawed hands all of which make her resemble a goblin.
      • In the anime, she looks more human, but her mouth looks melted, her sclera is black, there are scars all over her body, her hunchback is even bigger than in the manga, and being muscular in uneven places.
    • After being experimented on by the Loki faction, she was essentially a huge tentacle monster with Shadow's healing hands only being able to heal her gradually with her appearance becoming only partially human before the treatment is completed.
  • Broken Bird: Aside from having suffered from Demonic Possession, she also had to endure being the cult's test subject for years along with being killed and resurrected. Lambda even notes that despite training with Shadow Garden for half a month, she is still unable to calm her mind.
  • The Bus Came Back: Despite her death at Alpha's hands, she is later resurrected and turned into a stronger monster with the web novel having her return in the later parts of the Oriana Kingdom Civil War arc and the light novel has her return in Volume 6.
  • Child Prodigy: While the newest recruit of Shadow Garden along with at least looking like she is thirteen, she is very talented, but still needs time to fully cultivate her talent. Not to mention the fact that due to being healed by Shadow, she potentially has more magic power just like the Seven Shadows, Victoria, and Rose.
  • Closest Thing We Got: Initially Millia was the cult's last choice since they wanted more powerful individuals like Rose, Alexia, and Claire for their experiments but since those three are out of the question, they finally chose her.
  • Combat Tentacles: After being resurrected and experimented on by the Loki Faction, she became a mass of tentacles that seek and crush the target she is assigned to kill.
  • Determinator: When under the cult's influence to kill Shadow, she kept attacking Shadow even after her right hand was cut off and tried to use her sword to stab his heart, which Shadow even complimented her for.
  • The Dog Bites Back: The first thing Millia does after being enhanced is to kill the scientist who experimented on her.
  • Flawed Prototype: When the Loki Faction started creating monsters designed to kill Shadow, she was merely the first one with them already having foreseen her defeat at Shadow's hand.
  • Healing Factor: It's shown during her rampage that her enhanced regenerative abilities are so powerful that even Iris couldn't stop it. Only Alpha was able to stop her by bisecting her.
  • Human Weapon: The experiments the cult performed on her turned her into an attack dog designed to kill their enemies with Shadow being her main target after the experiments of the Loki Faction.
  • I Have Your Wife: Millia was kidnapped by the Cult of Diablos to coerce her father into joining them.
  • Mercy Kill: In her first appearance, she was suffering from the experiment the cult put her through with Iris and the other knights being unable to kill her and only prolonging her suffering. Alpha then swiftly kills her with one slash from her sword to let her rest in peace.
  • New Meat: Before 712 joined, she was the newest and weakest member of Shadow Garden and had only trained with them for half a month, which is why she was chosen to spar against her.
  • Red Right Hand: When healing her back to human, Shadow turned her left arm back to normal, while her right arm remained a huge tentacled mass, which Shadow cuts off to stop her attack.
  • The Resenter: She dislikes 712 due to the recruit drawing against her in their sparring session and upon seeing 712 is also her new roommate, she decides she would rather sleep outside than in the same room as her.
  • Restoration of Sanity: As Shadow is gradually healing her from the enhancements the cult gave her, the light in her eyes is also slowly returning indicating that her fractured mind is being restored.
  • Save the Villain: After killing the corrupt nobles that formed the Thirteen Night Swords, Shadow saves Millia from her horrible transformation at the hands of the cult despite her attempts to kill him. This is also what ultimately gave Christina the conviction to become the second Jack the Ripper.
  • Say My Name: After being experimented on by the Loki Faction and being partially healed by Shadow, all she could say is Shadow in a tone that is a mixture of insane and sad while trying to kill him.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Millia is given a second chance in life after Shadow frees her from the cult's control and is then taken into Shadow Garden.
  • Tragic Keepsake:
    • The only thing she has left from her father is a dagger with the words "To my beloved daughter, Millia" engraved on the hilt, which she kept even when mutated into a monster. Notably Alpha took the sword with her unlike other members of Shadow Garden, who are forced to discard everything they have with Rose being in tears over losing the wrapper that reminded her of Cid.
    • The anime changes her keepsake to a locket with a picture of her and her father inside since the dagger wouldn't translate well due to the world where the series takes place not having Japanese as its language.
  • Tragic Monster: She was someone who suffered from Demonic Possession and was experimented on by the cult into their weapon with the implication that she was still aware of what happened to her.
  • Vague Age: While 712 describes her as looking like she is thirteen, her actual age is not verified, which is especially not helped by the manga and anime giving two different ages along with the unknown time she spent as an experiment.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's impossible to talk about 711 without mentioning the fact she is Millia along with the fact her existence not only shows she came back to live, but the cult is also creating a monster to kill Shadow.
  • Well-Trained, but Inexperienced: While Milia is a well-trained swordswoman with lots of potential, her lack of experience makes her the weakest member of Shadow Garden and is also the reason why 712 was able to tie against her.
  • You Are Number 6: When she was being experimented on by the cult, her number was 227, after becoming part of Shadow Garden, she became number 711.
  • You Killed My Father: Her motivation to train under Shadow Garden is to get revenge on the cult, not only for the torturous experimentations they subjected her to but also for her father's death.

Akane Nishino

Debut: Chapter 145 (Web Novel), Volume 4 (Light Novel), Chapter 47 (Manga), Episode 1 (Anime)

Voiced by: Yui Horie (Japanese), Natalie Rial (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akane_nishino_manga.jpg

After being subdued by her rampage and healed by Shadow, Akane was kidnapped by Beta to obtain more knowledge of her world. Due to lacking the means to send her back, she was made into a member of Shadow Garden.

For tropes that apply to her before joining Shadow Garden. Click here

  • Convenient Coma: After being quelled from her rampage by Shadow, she spends several weeks if not months in a coma. By the time she woke up, Millia was already training as a member of Shadow Garden for half a month.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: While 711 was overpowering her for the majority of the fight, she was still able to fight back and end the fight in a draw due to 711's inexperience.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Due to recognizing Minoru's handwriting from one of Eta's notes and the fact Eta talks about all the experiments she performed on him, she is under the belief that Minoru is being held prisoner at Shadow Garden. When in reality, he is their leader and none of Eta's experiments had any effect on him.
  • I Will Find You: Her goal in Shadow Garden is to find Minoru, who she believes is kidnapped by them.
  • Kidnapped by the Call: Akane pretty much had no choice but to join Shadow Garden since not only did Beta outright kidnap her, but they also lack the means to send her back home.
  • Language Barrier: The only ones in Shadow Garden who can speak Japanese are Beta and Eta with Akane only able to comprehend what others mean through their actions and tone of voice. Beta gives her a language textbook in the hopes of subverting this.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: On Earth, she was the most powerful knight in existence capable of destroying a city when going berserk, in Shadow Garden she is just another member, who was barely able to draw against 711.
  • Something Only They Would Say: She realizes Minoru is in Shadow Garden since everyone there calls her Akane Nishimura, which is what he used to call her.
  • Trapped in Another World: She is kidnapped by Beta for the sake of obtaining knowledge from her world and Shadow Garden lacks the means to send her back.
  • Walking Spoiler: It is impossible to talk about 712 without mentioning that she is Akane.
  • Wrong Context Magic: Due to coming from another world, her magic is much different than those of other members of Shadow Garden or anyone else in the world.
