    Vergil
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dmc4se_vergil_5.png

The Anti-Villain-slash-Anti-Hero son of an Ascended Demon named Sparda and a human named Eva, and twin brother of Dante. While Dante became a hotheaded but selfless Anti-Hero after demons killed their mother, Vergil grew to be a cool and collected Anti-Villain out for his own gain. During the seven-year time skip, he joined the Sabertooth guild.

  • The Ace: He's established as this for Sabertooth in the time skip. Erza considers Vergil to be Fairy Tail’s biggest obstacle in the Grand Magic Game, which puts him ahead of people like Lucia and Jura.
  • And Then What?: In "Let's Welcome Chaos", Natsu angrily tells him this even when he becomes the King of Hell, what good is all the power if he's gonna sit on an oversized throne as he finds it quite boring. Vergil didn't have an answer at the time. By Devil's Retribution he does. After killing Mundus and taking his throne, Vergil will use the position to quell any chaos since most demons would respect the Son of Sparda who killed a fallen god.
  • Arc Villain: He is the main villain in his namesake arc, where he kidnaps and beats Fairy Tail members to ensure they don't intervene in his fight with Dante.
    • He later became the Big Bad Ensemble in Devil Hand Arc alongside Arkham.
    • The Grand Magic Games arc has him assume this position again, working with Future Legion.
  • Always Someone Better: To his brother Dante in terms of skill. He discovered his Devil Trigger much sooner and shows greater mastery over it. What's more, Dante has yet to beat him in a one-on-one duel, usually requiring aid from Natsu.
    • He is also this towards Fairy Tail's most elite members, to the point that Natsu holds a specific fear towards him. Even S-Class Wizards like Erza and Mira have been defeated by him, with Vergil's Devil Trigger outmatching Mira's Satan Soul.
    • Though he has yet to encounter Laxus, Freed notes from his fight with Vergil that his power surpasses that of Laxus'.
    • He's revealed to be this toward all of Crime Sorciére, which includes the likes of Jellal, Ultear, and Sheeree, forcing them to retreat when facing them once.
    • He's practically this for all of Sabertooth, being their most powerful member likely including the Guild Master.
    • However, there are a few above him when it comes to power.
      • Makarov, a Wizard Saint and Fairy Tail's guild master, intimidated Vergil with just a glare and a magic pulse strong enough to make him stumble back. Vergil even notes that at full power he couldn't beat Makarov (for now).
      • Gildarts. When he unleashes his full power on Tenrou Island, Natsu notices he might be even stronger than Vergil.
      • Master Hades. Dante finds that not only is he all-powerful and knows how to use it but notes that if Hades could defeat even Makarov, then even Vergil wouldn't be able to scratch him.
      • Acnologia, as the most powerful being in all of Earthland and the slayer of Sparda, naturally surpasses Vergil as well. Vergil himself admits even post-Time Skip that he can't beat Acnologia at his current level.
  • Arch-Enemy: Vergil is already this to Dante but he later became this to Natsu. Considering that Vergil is responsible for his Trauma Button for utterly defeating him and giving him a scar, that's to be expected.
  • Battle Aura: His demonic power is dark blue in color.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: In Devil Hand arc, he teamed up with Arkham to built their own Dark Guild named Devil Hand to unseal Temen-ni-gru and later Arkham turns out more malicious and betrayed him, much to his and everybody's shock.
    • In Grand Magic Games arc, this time with Future Legion to summon an army of dragons through the Eclipse Gate to kill Mundus, Acnologia and the Three Demon Kings, and to take the throne of the Underworld for himself.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Word of God states at the end of Fangs Bared that Vergil would have been the first to come to Lucy's aid when Minerva continued assaulting her after the Naval Battle, but was beaten to the punch by Dante and Natsu, showing that despite being on opposite sides and seemingly not caring on the surface, Vergil does care for his cousin.
  • Blood Knight: Despite his stoicism, greatly enjoys a good fight, sincerely complimenting any opponent that manages to push him.
  • Break Them by Talking: He is an expert in this and since Fairy Tail got some Dark and Troubled Past, that's gonna be ugly.
    • Satan Soul vs Devil Trigger, he uses her younger sister's apparent death that's her fault for it which leaves Mira completely enraged by the guilt, with Elfman also enraged that he used Lisanna to win a fight.
    • Demon vs Spirits, with Lucy about her father and what happened in the Phantom Lord arc, she thought he is trying to make her feel guilty about it, but instead, he knows that's not her fault but why question her to not kill him and while she is horrified, but what really seals it that's she is weak just as her mother that died young, which differently drives the dagger in her heart. Harsher in Hindsight is that's his aunt, uncle, and cousin he talked to.
    • Devil Prince vs Fairy Queen, even Erza Scarlet got it from Tower of Heaven with Jellal the death of her closest friends Rob and Simon even got her, but she tries to get over with that and telling him he is right about that, but that's motivated her to press on.
    • Epic Clash: Natsu vs Vergil, he tries this against Natsu several times that his fire can't melt a marshmallow and why he cares about Igneel since he abandoned him.
    • Rise! Temen-ni-gru!, even Ultear of Grimoire Heart got it when he provoked about her mother Ur abandoning her and took two boys, Gray and Lyon, while she got Meredy, she got enraged, using her Arc of Time in an attempt to rust the Yamato, but to no avail, because the Yamato is a Devil Arm that's immune of time and captures her and use her Arc of Time to complete the ritual to unleash Temen-ni-gru, with Leviatha/Sheeree's assistance by speeding up the time around the seal.
  • The Chessmaster: Its revealed in The Grand Magic Games arc that Vergil is the true mastermind behind the Eclipse plan. Working with Future Rogue, Vergil has successfully played Sabertooth, the Magic Council, the Fiore government, and Fairy Tail all to accomplish his goal of taking down Acnologia and Mundus. What's more no one not even Fairy Tail (who have good reason to be wary of Vergil) suspected him until he revealed himself. Its clear he inherited his father's intelligence along with his sword.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Most of Vergil's fights with Fairy Tail is considered this. Even the Action Girl S-Class Mirajane and Erza Scarlet couldn't defeat him. Even Natsu with Gray and Gajeel are completely overwhelmed by him. It took the combined Super Modes of Devil Trigger Dante and Dragon Force Natsu to defeat him for the first and so far only time.
    • In Towards the Future, he easily defeats a Lightning Cerberus (with it's own element no less) in a display of how strong he's become in the last seven years.
    • Old Friends reveals that he delivered one to all of Crime Sorciére during the Time Skip, forcing them to retreat.
  • Dark Is Evil: Like his twin Dante, he is half-demon. Unlike Dante, he is incredibly cold and in his Devil Trigger, he's very powerful and intimidating. Zigzagged since he is an Noble Demon, and after the Timeskip is the Token Good Teammate compared to rest of Sabertooth.
  • Death Glare: Delivers one hell of a rage-filled look at Minerva after she beat Lucy to near-death and attempted to cheap-shot Natsu in Fangs Bared, causing her Smug Snake persona to quickly fall apart.
  • Didn't See That Coming:
  • Double Weapon: Vergil has gained a new Devil Arm since his last encounter with Fairy Tail: a lightning-generating double-bladed spear named Zeus. It was originally a broadsword named Alastor but evolves when Vergil kills a lightning Cerberus with it and absorbs its energy.
  • The Dreaded: Is this to ALL of Fairy Tail given how he's easily stronger than Dante.
    • After facing him once and being forced to fall back, Crime Sorciére is also cautious about him.
    • Even Jiemma, the master of Vergil's own guild, backs down first when the two get into a confrontation, implying he may have some fear of him as well. In fact, the members of Sabertooth in general are shown to be afraid of Vergil and quickly do what he says when he gets serious.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While Vergil comes off as The Unfettered in his pursuit of greater power, he does have personal lines he won't cross.
    • For example, after witnessing Lucy lose her fight with Flare because of Raven Tail's cheating, he's absolutely pissed and silently admits that if it were up to him he would destroy the former Dark Guild.
    • He also is disgusted with Jiemma trying to humiliate Yukino and stops it.
    • As seen when Minerva takes Happy hostage to force Dante's cooperation, he does not approve of using the weak as shields, citing it as a sign of weakness.
  • Evil Virtues: Is a Noble Demon, and has many more positive traits compared to the rest of Fairy Tail's rogues gallery.
    • Ambitions. Having very lofty goals to strive towards. Though this veers very close to Ambition Is Evil.
    • Determination. Rivalling his brother Dante and Fairy Tail itself in this regard. Compared to their regular enemies that have a Villainous Breakdown upon being defeated, and/or learn to avoid making an enemy of them, Vergil has been beaten no less than three times, and his response to each is to get up, make his exit, and ensure he trains for the next encounter.
    • Honesty. Vergil is an honorable warrior and never uses lies or trickery to win or achieve his goals.
    • Honor. Vergil greatly values honor and always fights in a direct and open manner, albeit to prove his superior strength and skill. As such, he is disgusted by Ivan and Raven Tail in the Grand Magic Games for blatantly cheating and robbing Lucy of their well earned victory. He outright called them pathetic once their deception was exposed.
    • Respect. Although it takes a lot to earn it, Vergil is not above giving credit to anyone he feels deserves it, being rather polite to the likes of Erza and Mirajane upon meeting them. And while it took a while, he eventually to gained begrudging respect for Fairy Tail and their conviction in their beliefs, despite previously falling into Underestimating Badassery. Notably, this puts him at odds with the rest of Sabertooth, who seem determined to belittle everyone they come across.
  • Foil: Has several ones as the story progresses.
  • Force and Finesse:
  • The Force Is Strong with This One: When Freed fought him, he got a taste of his power and find it on the same level as Laxus, or even stronger, much to the shock of both Bickslow and Evergreen, but Levy and Cana too.
  • Genius Bruiser: Not only did Vergil defeat many Fairy Tail members head-on with his demonic powers, but also of his tactical skills, having quickly managed to determine an impressively detailed record of each of their magics and respective traumatic backstories. Makarov even compliments him for being as smart as he is strong.
  • Graceful Loser: Whenever Vergil loses a fight he takes it in stride, accepting the inevitability of defeat and using it as motivation to grow stronger. Notably when Dante beats him at the Grand Magic Games, he congratulates him on achieving victory.
  • Healing Factor: Has one at least as strong as his brothers, shrugging off devastating attacks with little impact.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Played with. Post-time skip he has joined a proper guild, implying he has ceased any criminal activities, however, the guild he joined is Sabertooth.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Develops into this after the timeskip, albeit the heart of gold is very well hidden. He maintains his apathetic might makes right attitude for the most part, but his Pet the Dog moments have become much more frequent, on top of being more willing to dole out compliments to others, internally and externally. He even shares a few moments of friendliness with his brother and cousin.
  • Karma Houdini: Despite being defeated by Dante and Natsu in his debut arc, he managed to get away and return to face them again in the Devil Hand arc, which is usually rare for an enemy of Fairy Tail since they either got befriended or like most guilds are disbanded like Phantom Lord, Oración Seis and Grimoire Heart, but Vergil yet again is able to escape again (but Makarov allowed it), and he joined in the official guild eventually, Sabertooth.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: His signature weapon, Yamato, is a demonic sword given to him by his father.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Vergil might be cocky Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy Smug Super that outmatch even the most Elite Fairy Tail members, he isn't foolish enough to fight Makarov, a Wizard Saint, even with full power he might not win against him (for now, that is) when he warned the Son of Sparda with to ever harm his children again.
  • Light/Darkness Juxtaposition: Is the dark to his cousin Lucy's light. He is a classic example of Dark Is Evil due to his dark color scheme and being half-demon, while Lucy is a textbook case of Light Is Good, dressing in bright colours and using Celestial Spirit Magic.
  • Magic Knight: Among the best fighters in this story, being a Son of Sparda with incredible fighting prowess with his iaido/iaijutsu fighting style. The 'magic' comes from using Yamato along with his other Devil Arms and demonic powers, which combine to make him an almost unbeatable opponent.
  • Master Swordsman: Vergil's skill with a sword is superior to even Dante and Erza's.
  • The Mole: As it turns out, Vergil may have joined Sabertooth, but he serves as a spy for the Magic Council. Whether or not he is truly loyal to them is unclear. Origins shows that may not be the case, as it's revealed that he's spying on the Magic Council for King Toma, who's become increasingly worried over the Council's aggressive actions.
  • Mythical Motifs: Demons and devils just like his brother due to his heritage and Devil Trigger.
  • Noble Demon: Vergil has a certain code of honor. If he gives his word to an agreement, he'll hold his end to it. For example, when Adrian/Beelzebub requests that once his part is complete, Vergil will kill him, the human-demon hybrid understands his situation completely and promises it with no strings attached. He also straightforwardly faces opponents, with the main reason he targeted Fairy Tail members being that he simply wanted a 1v1 fight with Dante without interruptions. Best seen by his disdain for Minerva, who he admonishes for claiming to be 'strong' despite relying on hostages and dirty tactics to win her fights.
  • Not So Invincible After All: After spending so long appearing as an invincible force of nature to any single fighter throughout the story, Vergil finally faces an undisputed one-on-one defeat when he falls to Dante on the fourth day of the Grand Magic Games, showing everyone that he can be beaten. Minerva even states that Vergil isn't invincible after witnessing this herself.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: During the Time Skip he encountered all of Crime Sorciére, fighting them all to the point that they were forced to retreat once he brought out his Devil Trigger.
  • Only Sane Man: Compared to the other members of Sabertooth, especially Sting, Vergil is the only one that does not dismiss Fairy Tail as a threat, acknowledging the strength the various members possess, and watching any match with Fairy Tail in the Grand Magic Games with interest to see how much stronger they have become since his last battle with them. He's fully aware of this and is sick of Sabertooth's members never listening to him, even referring to himself as their babysitter.
  • Pet the Dog: Vergil might be a prominent antagonist, but his Noble Demon traits do show once in a while.
    • He promised Adrian/Beelzebub to end his suffering if he helps his goals to unlock Temen-ni-gru. When both Mira and Elfman confront him and bring that up he explains his reasons and the inability to help but also allowed Elfman to punch him for still bringing a boy to the Dark Guild.
    • His anger towards Raven Tail for having to cheat to win against his cousin Lucy.
    • He is the only one to defend Yukino from Jiemma from further humiliation when she is kicked out of the guild. Before she leaves, he tells her she was a fine addition to Sabertooth, despite what Jiemma says.
  • Reconstruction: Of The Social Darwinist, in contrast to his guildmates. Vergil has always maintained that Might Makes Right, and views Fairy Tail's emphasis on The Power of Friendship as nonsense. However, following the timeskip he displays more nuance in what he considers 'strength' and his overall philosophy, acknowledging that strength of will can bring someone further than power alone, however it is derived, even citing it as the main difference between Natsu and Sting. He notes that despite losing her match, Yukino being expelled from Sabertooth is a waste, pointing out that she had the potential and will to improve, both of which are admirable qualities, and that strength isn't confined to what someone can do in the present. Finally, despite fundamentally disagreeing with his brother and Fairy Tail, he respects both their abilities and drive, and is willing to be cordial as a result, making him significantly easier to get along with than the rest of Sabertooth.
  • Recurring Element: He's a complex case of fusing two of Iron117Prime's common character archetypes. When he's introduced, most of the dialogue that's directed towards him is more in line with the Crossover Villain-in-Chief of that story (i.e. You Monster!). Later on in the story, most of his better traits manifest, shifting towards Noble Demon status. Despite being far less of a villainous person, he still gets the chance to off a major Fairy Tail villain: Jiemma. It's the closest thing he does that's the equivalent of the Crossover Villain-in-Chief axing the other faction, though it's more because the master was an Asshole Victim rather than proving that he's a far crueler antagonist.
  • Red Baron: Devil Prince, after the seven years of timeskip.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Dante learns in Edolas that Lucy's counterpart is the niece of his mother's counterpart, leading him to wonder if the same is true back home. Sure enough, Capricorn reveals that his mother, Eva, was the older sister of Layla, Lucy's mother; therefore, Dante and Vergil are cousins with Lucy.
  • Smug Super:
    • Just like Dante he is just as cocky, however, he is even more so as he likes calling himself superior and those lesser than him (most members of Fairy Tail) not on his level. Considering how skilled he is, he's able to back it up most of the time.
    • Averted when it comes to the subject of Acnologia, as when Sting mocks Natsu over being unable to stand up to the dragon at Tenrou Island, Vergil shuts him down and admits even he as he is now (who overpowered all of Crime Sorciére once he got serious) would lose to the dragon.
  • Strong and Skilled: Is among the best fighters in the story, standing above even Dante in terms of power and skill with weapons, especially his swordsmanship. His debut arc has him single-handedly fight his way through most of Fairy Tail, inflicting crushing defeats on the likes of Erza and Mirajane. During the timeskip, his skills proved enough to match all five members of Crime Sorciere by himself, in what they describe as an uphill battle for them. The moment he used Devil Trigger the fight became so one-sided Crime Sorciere (all of whom are major winners of the Superpower Lottery) were forced to retreat.
  • Super Mode: Was the first character to unlock his Devil Trigger.
  • Starter Villain: The first new antagonist of the story's very first major arc.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Hates his guild master Jiemma and has no respect for him and doesn't make any attempt to hide it. While his guildmates respect his abilities they don't like him on a personal level. He's even admitted that he has no interest in making friends, and sees joining Sabertooth as a means to an end. He eventually beheads Jiemma to prevent him from murdering Sting. Later on, he admits that Yukino was the only one with potential, declaring the rest of the guild as idiotic fools that let themselves grow stagnant, with their own ambitions making things more complicated. The minute he no longer needs Sabertooth anymore he dumps them making it clear he's through with the guild.
  • Token Good Teammate: Believe it or not, fits this the best amongst Sabertooth, being the only member who doesn't constantly lord their superiority over other guilds (especially Fairy Tail), and is even annoyed by his teammates (especially Sting) doing so. He's also the only one who stands up for Yukino when she is expelled from the Guild.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Vergil was always a badass but during the Time Skip, he grows so powerful that he was able to drive off all of Crime Sorciére by himself once he went Devil Trigger. Keep in mind that Crime Sorciére has two members who can use Lost Magics, another can copy any form of magic including Lost Ones, and Jellal one of the most powerful mages in the story and Vergil forced them all to flee. Sorano makes it clear that to even stand a chance against him Dante and the others need to have their second Origins unlocked. He shows how far he's come during the fight on Day 4 of the Grand Magic Games, including new personal Devil Arms Zeus, Arbiter, Ifrit, and Mirage Edge (notably for being formed from his own demonic power alone), as well as an evolution to his Devil Trigger.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Following the Time Skip Vergil is shown to be much more reasonable and far less malevolent, in addition to losing much of his Smug Super tendencies. He's also much more willing to dole out compliments in his internal narration, his philosophy having evolved to acknowledge a persons determination and potential to grow stronger, rather than simply their current strength. He's still not exactly nice however shown by his utter dismissal of Lucy and her father passing away.
  • Underestimating Badassery: During the first story, Vergil is extremely confident in his abilities during his battles with Dante and Fairy Tail, easily defeating many of them in combat. However, this comes back to bite him as the various members' determination, stubbornness, and teamwork end up putting him on the ropes. Come Devil's Retribution this seems to have been slowly averted. When Sting boasts that he can beat Natsu, Vergil warns him not to underestimate the Salamander, noting that for all his foolishness, he is the most powerful of the first-generation Dragon Slayers.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: A flashback showed him willing to pass the time playing with Dante and Lucy and happily reading a book full of poetry.
  • Villain Has a Point: He might be a villain that's more than willing to kill Dante and those who stand in his way, but he does make some valid points to back up his worldview:
    • More Fairies Fall, when he faced the Thunder Legion, Freed asked him why is he against Dante, his own flesh and blood. Vergil quickly points out that they don't have room the talk since they betrayed their guild before during the Battle of Fairy Tail event, and didn't even share in their leader's punishment.
    • Demon vs Spirits, during Lucy's first 'fight' with him, she grows increasingly angry as he cuts down her spirits without mercy. He points out that she's the one sending them all against a clearly superior opponent and if she truly wants to prevent them from getting hurt, she should grow stronger.
    • Brothers Rivals Evermore!, he still believes that power is all that matters and that bonds and friendship are of no help if you are weak. Even after Happy gives him a speech about Vergil unleashing the tower and undoing the hard work of both his father and the dragons, saying that Fairy Tail will never lose to him, Vergil manages to prove him wrong, defeating Dante despite his brother fighting for those same friends and bonds. This is further reinforced by Happy's failed attempt to take back the Perfect Amulet, as he is no match against Vergil, proving his point that The Power of Friendship cannot make up for such a gap in strength and skill.
    • A Bittersweet Aftermath, even Makarov admits that Vergil is somewhat correct about the fact that power and might control everything and that's important to be strong to get to live. However, he points out that power isn't everything and you don't need to go on a dark path to obtain it.
  • Villain Respect:
    • In A Bittersweet Aftermath, after he declines Makarov's offer to join Fairy Tail due to having bad blood between many members, not just Dante, he at least acknowledges the strength they have and that he underestimated many of them and got his respect.
    • This continues past the time-skip, where he is unsurprised to hear they survived Acnologia, and scolds Sting for assuming they are weak.
    • Just before the Pandemonium Royale event, he mentally name-drops Erza and Natsu as among the few aside from Dante who can push him.
    • After Dante finally beats him in a one-on-one fight on the fourth day, Vergil congratulates his younger brother on his victory.
    • He respects them enough to request their aid, as he and Future Rogue prepare for war with Acnologia and the Underworld, amassing a dragon army to overthrow Mundus. He remarks that he can be new ruler of Underworld and Fairy Tail to be legendary heroes in Earthland, considering them the best guild for the job... Fairy Tail decline. Vehemently.
  • Weapon-Based Characterization: His main Devil Arm is the Yamato, which he use it with great skill and techniques. Fitting for such a stoic and (outwardly) tranquil man who favors precision.
  • We Can Rule Together: In Mastermind, he reveals he wants form an alliance with his brother and Fairy Tail to defeat Acnologia, the Demon Kings, and even Mundus. Despite making some reasonable points, Fairy Tail refuse to submit or stand aside for anyone.
  • Would Hurt a Child:
    • He has no problem kidnapping Wendy. When Wendy uses Sky Dragon Roar on him she missed and he slaps her, finding her a nuisance now as he tried to slash her, but Natsu Took The Bullet for her.
    • She used her attack on Vergil again in the Temen-ni-gru during the Devil Hand arc but managed to him this time. Vergil tried to slash her again but this time Ezra got in the way with swords.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Gender doesn't matter to Vergil, so long as they're in his way he'll knock them around. Though given the sheer amount of female badasses in the cast, this is quite justified.

    Zeref
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zeref_ft_2018.png

The legendary Black Wizard Zeref is considered by most people as the strongest and most evil wizard that ever alive, but he is still alive and is not what you might expect.

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Zeref's canonical life already sucked, but here he got cursed not due to researching Things Man Was Not Meant to Know, but because he decided to back out of the Deal with the Devil that gave him that research when Sparda taught him the value of life and said devil (Mundus) decided to spite him for kicks and petty revenge.
  • Adaptational Heroism: In canon Zeref only became cursed to save someone he loved, but thanks to Sparda, together they helped a lot of people, including forming the Order of the Sword alongside Anna Heartfilia.
  • The Apprentice: In Neo Oracion Seis, it was revealed that Zeref was a student to Sparda himself.
  • The Archmage: Possibly the greatest mage of all time. Sparda was outright amazed at Zeref's abilities and talent with magic.
  • Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work: As in canon, he kills Hades after his defeat, though it can be argued that was a Mercy Kill considering Hades was so corrupted by Mundus the Demon Emperor was capable of using his corpse as a puppet. In Retribution, he's the one who kills Klodoa after the staff escapes the heroes in the confusion of the aftermath of the fight with the Order of the Sword and the Savior.
  • Death Glare: This combined with his soul-piercing red eyes can intimidate remaining members of Grimoire Heart and their Guild Master Hades, and pressure is such that Rustyrose and Kain were not able to move their bodies at all.
    • He did it again in Chapter 23: The True Saviors; with Klodoa begging him to spare his life, he disintegrates the evil living staff to dust.
  • Driven to Suicide: We learn in Chapter 31 of Retribution that out of guilt for the lives he took when he was first cursed, he cut out his own heart as penance. Only to discover he can't die and was cursed with immortality.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He cares deeply for his teacher Sparda and his friend Anna Heartfila, and is enraged when the current Order of the Sword and Neo Oracion Seis reassembles the Infinity Clock, despite the three working so hard to prevent the apocalypse years ago. Worst of all is desecrating Sparda's corpse, which Zeref states is beyond forgiveness, and proceeds to destroy Klodoa, reducing him to mere dust.
  • So Proud of You: Not directly, but he's grateful as he tells to Sparda and Anna that the former's son, the latter's descendant, and even Natsu managed to destroy the Infinity Clock, something that the three of them together could not succeed and let them celebrate and savor their victory since they earned it... however, it may be their last.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: He's enraged at the Order of the Sword reassembling the Infinity Clock, undoing the hard work he did with Sparda and Anna to take it apart. However, what really makes him angry was learning about the Order desecrating Sparda's corpse for their plans, which he even says is beyond forgiveness.
  • Tragic Villain: Just like in canon. He lost his family and, in a desperate attempt to save someone he loved, he went to Mundus, striking a deal with the Demon Emperor. When Sparda pulled Zeref out of that deal, Mundus cursed Zeref with both immortality and magic that will kill everything around him the more he valued life, the exceptions being Sparda and a select few others.

    Acnologia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dragon_acnologia.png

The Black Dragon of the Apocalypse.

  • Adaptational Wimp: Inverted! Here, while Fairy Tail did manage to make him bleed, that was more like papercuts. He's just as powerful and unstoppable as in canon and even claims the role of Sparda's killer. The only sign of this trope is that now there is a character who can fight him on his own, Mundus, which can be attributed to the other bad guy's might.
  • Archenemy: To Sparda. Other than Mundus, Acnologia is the enemy Sparda despises the most. Acnologia killed many of Sparda's friends during his extermination of the Dragons and ultimately took the Dark Knight's life in their second battle. While it's not clear how Acnologia feels about Sparda the fact that upon realizing that Dante is his son he immediately moved for a breath attack suggests he has a grudge as well.
  • The Dreaded: Still just as feared as he was in canon. Even the Underworld fears him, where he's known as the Dragon Butcher. Besides Mundus he is the most feared being in both Earthland and the Underworld.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: During the dragon civil war, several demons attempted to use Acnologia for their own ends or simply faced him for a "challenge". They all learned to their fatal regret he wasn't interested in their games.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Was just a regular human at one point but thanks to his mastery of Dragon Slayer Magic grows into the most powerful being Earthland has ever produced and a threat comparable to Mundus (who is a God) and even manages to kill Sparda something Mundus couldn't do.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: In this story, he is covered with scars.
  • Hero Killer: He is the one who killed Sparda.
  • Red Baron: In addition to his canon titles, in the Underworld he's known as the "Dragon Butcher" for his role in nearly causing the dragons' extinction.
  • Suddenly Speaking: In canon, he didn't speak until the Tartaros arc. Here he speaks in his debut where he recognized Dante as a spawn of Sparda where he mocked him that if he missed his father let join him with Acnologia attempting to kill him and the rest of Tenrou Team by obliterating Tenrou Island with Dragon Roar.
  • World's Strongest Man: Still this as in canon for the strongest being currently in Earthland. By Modeus' own reckoning, he's at least as strong as Sparda in his prime if not stronger, with the two having at least one battle during the Dragon King Festival and Acnologia ultimately slaying Sparda in single combat shortly before the present, and Zeref notes even by the standards of the Underworld, only Mundus alone could hope to face him one-on-one, with only the three Demon Kings together otherwise having a chance. Even Vergil post the seven-year Time Skip openly admits he stands no chance of beating Acnologia as he is despite having become much stronger since he last met Fairy Tail.

    Future Rogue (BEWARE UNMARKED SPOILERS)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/future_rogues_upper_body.png

A version of Rogue Cheney that used the Eclipse Gate to travel from the year X798, where Mundus reigns supreme and only five percent of Earthland's population remains. Traveling to the main timeline, he allies with Vergil with the intent to slay Acnologia and Mundus by using the Eclipse Gate to summon an army of dragons from the past. It turns out this person is actually Legion, a collective conscience of demons Rogue slayed that took over his body following the deaths of Yukino and Frosch.

  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Instead of just being Rogue from the future, he is actually a collective conscience of all the demons Rogue had slayed and consumed named Legion, and would take over his body after being consumed with vengeance against the person who killed Frosch and Yukino.
  • Adaptational Badass: He took out his timeline's Dante. Granted, Legion itself admitted it wasn't an easy fight, but he still killed Future Dante, took his powers as it's own and the Rebellion. And he also has Ice Devil Slayer magic, taking it from the person that killed Frosch and Yukino in his timeline.
  • And I Must Scream: It turns out that Future Rogue's body has been possessed by Legion for the last seven years in his timeline, with Rogue's mind rendered silent and unable to fight back.
  • An Ice Person: In addition to his canon powers, he also has Ice Devil Slayer magic he took from the one who killed his timeline's Frosch and Yukino.
  • Hero Killer: In addition to Future Lucy, he also killed the Sting and Dante in his timeline, claiming the former's Dragon Slayer magic and the latter's Rebellion and power in the aftermath.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Rogue went on this in his timeline after Yukino and Frosch died, seeking vengeance on the Devil Slayer that took their lives. He eventually succeeded in killing the Devil Slayer and taking his magic, but felt empty afterwards, allowing Legion to take over his body.
  • Start of Darkness: Initially the Token Good Teammate of Sabertooth, Rogue fell down a path of darkness when Frosch and Yukino were killed by an Ice Devil Slayer, seeking revenge on him and absorbing dark energy from the demons he slayed. After exacting his revenge and taking the Devil Slayer's magic, Rogue felt dissatisfied with himself and his actions, prompting Legion to take over his body, and forcing his mind silent.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: White Shadow Dragon Mode, Dual-Element Dragon Mode of his Shadow Dragon Slayer Magic and Future Sting's White Dragon Slayer Magic.

    Elexion
Known as the Thunder Dragon King, Elexion led an army of dragons 400 years in the past that opposed coexistence with humans, serving as Igneel's chief rival. He's later brought to the present through the Eclipse Gate.
  • Arch-Enemy: He was Igneel's main rival during the Dragon Civil War 400 years ago in the past.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: He became a Dragon King by being the strongest of all the Thunder Dragons.
  • The Dreaded: Modeus a student of Sparda and a powerful demon deeply fears him having an Oh, Crap! moment when he sees him emerge from the Eclipse Gate.

Underworld

    Mundus
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/demon_emperor_mundus_29_3.png

The Demon Emperor of the Underworld, the arch-nemesis of Sparda and his entire family.

  • Adaptational Badass: He was no slouch in canon, but here it's mentioned that Sparda needed the help of the dragons to defeat him and his armies, and even then, the best they could do was seal him away. It's later revealed that all magical and demonic power stems from him (or so he says), and he was the one to curse Zeref with immortality. And with just a fraction of his power, he was able to deliver a Curb-Stomp Battle on Precht (later Hades) who in turn outmatches most of Fairy Tail's strongest members. He's also confirmed to be more powerful than both Argosax and Urizen who in canon are noted to match and surpass him respectively. He's revealed to be a God in his backstory as well further emphasizing his increased might.
  • Arch-Enemy: Zeref utterly loathes Mundus for many reasons: cursing him, using Precht to draw him back out into the open, defiling Sparda's teachings in the process... The Black Wizard ultimately declares war on the Demon Emperor at the end of the Tenrou Arc.
Zeref: I will destroy you, Mundus, even if I have to turn the whole world against me!
    • Was this to Sparda back when he was alive as the Dark Knight was instrumental in stopping his invasion of Earthland and together with Igneel sealed him away, and Mundus seeks Revenge by Proxy on his family even centuries later showing he still holds a massive grudge.
  • Big Bad: Serves as the main antagonist of the series.
  • The Chessmaster: In addition to his incredible power, he's also very cunning as he successfully manipulates Hades and the rest of Grimoire Heart into drawing Zeref back into the open.
  • Composite Character: He takes Ankhseram's role as the one who cursed Zeref.
  • Crossover Villain-in-Chief: He's an interesting case of this, in that though he is incapacitated and cannot directly confront any of the protagonists yet, he's responsible for the actions of several Fairy Tail antagonists, specifically regarding their motivations and their current-day actions. In fact, a form of magic ( God Slayer Magic) directly originated from him. However, despite this position, neither Zeref nor Acnologia entertain teaming up with him for their own reasons.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Zeref backs out of a deal with him and Mundus curses him into becoming an immortal Walking Wasteland.
  • The Dreaded: Mundus is possibly the most feared being in both the Underworld and Earthland. Even his followers from Grimoire Heart are terrified when he possesses their masters corpse despite worshipping him.
  • Foil: to the Legendary Dark Knight. While Mundus is a Fallen God who fell due to his pride, Sparda is a Demon who rebelled against his own kind for the sake of humanity. Sparda believes that humanity itself, while flawed, will always be the best it can be, while Mundus only sees the worst in humanity and believes that it needs to be ruled by him. They also made mistakes in the past, but while the Dark Knight has accepted his mistakes and feels some regret for his past actions, the Emperor refuses to acknowledge that what he did was wrong, seeing the other gods as being in the wrong, not him. This is even down to their forms: Sparda has the appearance of a terrifying demon, while Mundus' original form as Pluto is reminiscent of a beautiful angel.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He is not only responsible for Dante and Vergil's mother's death just as every event that has ever taken place in the series.
    • He was the one responsible for Zeref's curse of immortality and black magic to destroy life as a pawn.
    • He sent Nelo Angelo to Edolas to prepare for an invasion, even powering up the Black Angel into the Onyx Reaper for the final confrontation.
    • Responsible for Precht becoming Hades as a Batman Gambit to make Zeref return by forming Grimoire Heart.
    • He was the one responsible for the creation of God Slayer Magic, which Sparda speculates might have been spiteful payback against the gods for stripping him of his original status or just him going For the Evulz.
  • Physical God: Mundus started off as a God called Pluto but after interfering in the mortal world he was stripped of his power and banished to the Underworld where he eventually overthrew Tathamet, the ruler of the Underworld, and became the Demon Emperor.
  • Rage Against the Heavens: Hates all the other Gods for banishing him to the Underworld and for not attempting to dominate the world like he did. He vowed to surpass all the Gods and become the mightiest being in all of existence. He even went so far as to create God Slayer Magic to help facilitate this.
  • Recurring Element: The standard Iron117Prime Eviler than Thou villain who poses perhaps the biggest threat to the protagonists, though he isn't as active as much as the others of his archetype. Rather, he exerts a great deal of influence to the point that Fairy Tail's villains act the way they do in canon because of him.
  • Satanic Archetype: He was once a god named Pluto, who rebelled against the gods' rule of not interfering in the mortal realm. Due to this, he was stripped of his power and banished to the Underworld. Taking the name Mundus, he created the Qlipoth seed and implanted it in the original ruler of the Underworld, Tathamet, and ate its fruit, becoming the new ruler of the Underworld. The author even stated that his backstory was based on Lucifer.
  • Self-Made Myth: As Capricorn reveals to Lucy in chapter 26 of Retribution, Mundus isn't the source of all magic, nor could he be since he had to overthrow the original leader of the Underworld to start manipulating his reputation as such.
  • The Usurper: Mundus was not the original ruler of the Underworld, but rather rose up and overthrew said ruler, Tathamet, and installing himself in place.
  • World's Strongest Man: Mundus is the strongest demon alive. He has been confirmed to be more powerful then either Sparda or Acnologia and it took the former teaming up with the Dragons to seal him away. In fact the only beings who seem to be stronger them him are Anu and Tathamet who are the the Gods who created Earthland and the Underworld and he even managed to destroy Tathamet (albeit by outsmarting and weakening him first rather then directly facing him).

    Phantom
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/phantom_devil_may_cry.jpg

A giant demon that has a spider-shaped body, scorpion-like tail, and the body fluid made of lava, and one of Mundus's servants.

  • Made of Iron: He takes multiple hits from both Gajeel and Gray, with it taking both collapsing the very room they're fighting in on top of him to injure him enough for Gajeel's Secret Art to finally finish him off.

    Griffon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/griffon_devil_may_cry.jpg

The gigantic raptor-lie bird with the hole on his chest, swirling of demonic energy, its exposed skull looks like the skull of several birds fused together, and one of the servants of Mundus.

  • Berserk Button: Even thinking of Igneel makes him angry enough; even calling him foul beast, which anger Natsu.
  • Bullying a Dragon: More bullying a Dragon Slayer when Griffon declares that he's going to kill Igneel once he finds him, Natsu became enraged, and successfully kills the bird demon with his "Dragon Slayer Secret Art: Flame Lotus: Phoenix Sword".
  • Mr. Exposition: He was the one that revealed about Dragon-Demon War event that occured 2,000 years ago and that Sparda knew Igneel.

    Nightmare
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nightmare_devil_may_cry.jpg
A bio-weapon created by Mundus himself. A bizarre pool of tepid green slime in which plates of demonic material and several skulls are partially submerged.

    Berial
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/berial.jpg

The Conqueror of the Fire Hell, Berial is a huge, centaur-like demon who's wreathed in flames from hell.

  • Berserk Button:
    • Being reminded of both Sparda and Igneel is enough for him to try and kill their sons: Nero and Natsu.
    • Being looked down on is another big one. A big part of his hatred for Igneel isn't just because the Fire Dragon King crushed him and his legion during the ancient war, but because Igneel refused to give him a warrior's death and just tossed his ass back into the Underworld. When Natsu counters one of his flame attacks and claims he doesn't have time to waste on Berial when he has people to rescue and others to beat up, Berial is incensed that once again someone doesn't think him "worthy".
  • Evil Is Petty: Being defeated by Igneel makes him angry enough that if he even hears some high praise of the Fire Dragon, he will kill anyone who said that and is more than willing to kill his son Natsu.
  • The Nose Knows: He has a good sense of smell.
    • He smelled Kyrie and notice that her scent is similar to her brother Credo.
    • Recognizing the scents of Nero and Natsu baring the same as their fathers Sparda and Igneel.
  • Not Worth Killing: How Berial interpreted Igneel's decision to just toss him back into the Underworld after beating him and his legion rather than finish him. When he's on the verge of defeat and Natsu tells him to just give up, he angrily declares he won't have a repeat of that humiliation and launches a last-ditch attack, which ends with Natsu finishing him off.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: When he's overwhelmed by Nero and Natsu's powers and synchronized attacks, it reminded him of his fights against Sparda and Igneel, no surprise that they are their sons...in a way.
  • Playing with Fire: He is an giant fire demon so that's expected. Too bad that isn't enough for both Igneel and his son Natsu.

    Stygian
An giant monstrous demon worm from the breed of demons called Ashworms that hunt similar like sand sharks.
  • Adaptational Badass: Stygians are the cannon fodder of the Devil May Cry reboot, but this guy is a capable giant monster.
  • Sand Worm: Is an giant one and hunts like a sand shark by both Coco's understanding from reading its descriptions in the Order's library and by Dante fighting it.

    Bael and Dagon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bael_with_rusalka_feelers.png

The duo demon ice toad brothers from the coldest inferno.

  • Achilles' Heel: They have both in their mouths.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Bael cried out for his brother when Dagon got killed in front of his eyes, and didn't have time to grieve.
  • Hot as Hell: The Rusalka twins resemble naked females, used to attract victims.
  • An Ice Person: They can use ice and conjure blizzards.
  • Just Eat Him: Dagon did this to Lisanna, too bad that it's too spicy because of her Dragon Soul.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: They look like a hybrid of a toad and an anglerfish.
  • Ominous Fog: They create a thick fog that serves as their hiding spot while they toy with their victims using the Rusalka feelers. A few moments later, the demon toad reveals its true form.

    Echidna
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/echidna.jpg

A huge demon who has infested the forest on Fortuna Island. Appears as a huge serpent-like dragon, but hides her true body in the mouth and can appear as a part-woman, part-serpent devil. She's laying a bunch of eggs which gives birth to the hellish Chimera.

  • Giant Flyer: She hovers over the forest the whole time.
  • Hypocrite: Gets mad at Fairy Tail for killing her "children", but as they point out maybe she shouldn't be using them liberally as projectiles and Mooks to kill them.
  • Mama Bear: She gets pissed when Lily sliced her eggs out of the sky with Baskerville, and the rest of team destroy her seeds.
  • Meaningful Name: Named after the monster from Greek myths. Echidna's name meant "she-viper," and she was the mother of various other monsters, including the Chimera.
  • Monster Is a Mommy: Echidna is the mother of the Chimera Seeds and berates Gajeel and his team for killing them.
  • Non-Mammal Mammaries: Her real appearance may be unmistakably feminine, but she's still a reptilian demon at the end of the day.

    Krakken
A powerful Demon Lord from the Underworld known as the Drowned King, able to manipulate the weather itself.
  • Adaptation Name Change: He is a Canon Immigrant from Darksiders Genesis, where he is called Dagon, but since the name of the demon already exists in the Devil May Cry series, he is renamed to Krakken.
  • Always Someone Better: He's a powerful Demon Lord, but Grandeeney can make storms superior to his, much to his anger.
  • Arch-Enemy: He is this towards Grandeeney and in his last moments of his life, he saw an image of Grandeeney above Wendy, muttering his last words:
    Krakken: Damn you... Grandeeney...!
  • Berserk Button: Just as Griffon and Berial hold a grudge towards Igneel, Krakken holds a grudge towards Grandeeney as well, just hearing her name makes him roar in fury.
  • The Dreaded: He is notorious enough to make Modeus, a former student of Sparda, give a gasp of horror.
  • Red Baron: According to Modeus, the title of the Drowning King is well earned, as shown in his fight.
  • Weather Manipulation: He controls water, wind, and lightning, conjuring floods and storms to wash away everything in his path.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He was about to kill Wendy, but luckily Modeus managed to save her.

    Moloch
A high-ranking commander in Mundus' army during the demonic invasion on Earthland. Moloch was later bound to the service of the Royal Family of Fiore.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Though Moloch is a legitimate threat with his Pandemonium spell, as well as his former rank of being a commander for Mundus, he ultimately falls short compared to the other threats Fairy Tail has dealt with thus far, being crushed near-instantly by Dante during his first encounter, and is later killed by Future Rogue.
  • Cruel Mercy: Suffered two of these from Sparda and Dante. Both denied him his warrior's death believing that for someone with his ego, deeming him Not Worth Killing is much worse.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: After Moloch reveals that he did something terrible to Mavis an enraged Dante brings out his Dreadnaught form and crushed the demon.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Shouts at Dante to "show no mercy" when he has him beaten and looks like he's gonna crush his skull. Instead, Dante breaks his remaining horn and sends him hurtling into the depths of the caverns with a bunch of boulders, not really caring if he ends up crushed to death by them.
  • Gemstone Assault: His Cool Sword Crystalbane creates crystals which are all imbued with explosive power, and it can freely generate them to the point he can unleash the power straight from the sword itself.
  • Horned Humanoid: Has a pair of great horns on his head. Sparda slashed off one of them long ago, and Dante slices off the other one.
  • The Minion Master: He created the magic spell Pandemonium, which allows the user to harness raw demonic energy and use it to create mindless nonliving minions, though only a set amount based on existing harnessed demonic energy. When he became bound to the service of Fiore's royal family, he was made to share the knowledge of the spell with the first generation of the Wolf Knights.
  • Sadist: Did something to Mavis that caused her immense pain and suffering and he enjoyed every second of it.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Fancied himself a rival to Sparda, but while he is not weak fighter, he was nothing compared to the Dark Knight and once Dante brings out his Dreadnaught Form, he defeats him without too much difficulty.
  • Spotting the Thread: He notices that Dante demands to know if he "killed" Mavis after claiming credit for said character's fate. Moloch takes note of that particular word and realizes Dante doesn't know the full story behind Mavis's and by extension Fairy Tail's past because he knows that's not what happened.
  • Summon Magic: His Pandemonium is inspired by the Celestial Wizards and their summoning of the Celestial Spirits, that allows him to summon and control 100 creature demonic monsters to act as his army.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: Moloch realizes that Dante is Locked Out of the Loop to the Fairy Tail founders' past when he jumps to the erroneous conclusion Moloch killed Mavis when all he claimed was that he was responsible for her sorry fate. Moloch decides to run with that line of thinking with his taunts anyways, believing it will open Dante up to a fatal mistake. Unfortunately for him, Dante instead goes Tranquil Fury on him.

Three Demon Kings

Three Demon Kings are very powerful demons, although not on the same level as Mundus, but powerful enough to hold significant sway in their own right.
    In General
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: Other then Mundus they are the strongest demons alive which is how they became known as Demon Kings. Zeref believes that if they were to work together they could possibly defeat Acnologia who is as strong an possibly even stronger then Sparda in his prime.
  • Awakening the Sleeping Giant: Following Zeref's declaration of war against Mundus and Acnologia's return they have become far more active.
  • The Dreaded: Although not on Mundus' level the Three Demon Kings are still not taken lightly. Demons like Sid and Bradley are just grunts and weaklings compared to them and according to Bluenote, a guy on the same level as Gildarts and who fought him for pretty long while, considers them pretty dangerous too. Even Zeref states they're the only beings the Underworld capable of challenging Acnologia aside from Mundus himself, albeit only if they all worked together.
  • Enemy Civil War: According to Sid they are vying with each other for power.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: During the Dragon Civil War, the Three Demon Kings led the demonic forces that were able to leave the Underworld thanks to the destabilization created by pro-human and anti-human sides and turned the conflict into a three-way, though they were unable to secure a foothold thanks to rise of the first Dragon Slayers (and consequently of Acnologia).

    Abigail
One of the Three Demon Kings.

    Argosax
One of the Three Demon Kings.

    Urizen
One of the Three Demon Kings.
  • Decomposite Character: In canon, Urizen is Vergil's demon side but here he is a separate entity that has existed for centuries although he still has a connection to the Sparda bloodline beyond just being a demon.

Other villains

    Sid
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sid_devil_may_cry_20053.jpg

A lesser demon that was hired to kill Patty but foiled by Dante and Lucy. He later joins Raven Tail as an informant.
