The Mikaelson Family

    Klaus Mikaelson

Niklaus "Klaus" Mikaelson
"The world is a rather awful place. Best to meet it on its own terms."
Played By: Joseph Morgan & Aiden Flowers

Rebekah: "Klaus may be a miserable excuse for a sibling but there is none more diabolical."

Klaus is a 1,000+ year old hybrid, who is half vampire and half werewolf. Originally, Klaus, like all of the other Original vampires, was born a human until Esther and Mikael bestowed the curse of vampirism/immortality onto him and the rest of his siblings.

  • Above Good and Evil: How he sees himself; his status as one of the most powerful creatures in existence has given him delusions of being above the rest of humanity. Because he views himself as the most powerful supernatural being on earth, he has a tendency to brag and boast about it, feeling that he can dictate what happens, whether it be moral or immoral. Klaus also doesn't seem to particularly care about doing the right thing, but will do so at times if he finds that it would benefit him in the end somehow.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Hayley used to find him irresistible. Genevieve certainly does. Camille and Caroline have both found Klaus appealing as well. Most of the Nice Girls that fall for Klaus (like Camille and Caroline) have a tendency to deny that they are drawn to or attracted to Klaus out of both disgust and shame that they are attracted to someone who is so messed up and dysfunctional. Although Klaus is sociopathic, dark, and immoral, he is the epitome of The Casanova and a womanizer, someone who exudes dark charm and a seductive nature and aura about him. Klaus has tons of charisma, charm and he oozes sex appeal. Plus, that British accent also helps matters and gets him plenty of female admiration. Klaus is rich, powerful, strong and hot. How could any girl resist him in the first place?
  • Aloof Big Brother: To both Rebekah and Kol. Klaus is significantly more powerful than the both of them, even with them being strong and powerful Original vampires themselves. This is because Klaus is the Original Hybrid, the first of his kind, someone who is half werewolf, half vampire. This makes him the most powerful supernatural being in the series' universe. Most of Klaus' family, including Elijah, Rebekah, and even their father Mikael, look down on Klaus and see him as a monster who might not be capable of being redeemed. It's not entirely unjustified, as Klaus continues to commit immoral deed after immoral deed and he never seems to stop repeating the same bad behaviour. Although Klaus has shown Big Brother Instinct and Knight Templar Big Brother tendencies towards both Rebekah and Kol, it does not change the fact that Klaus has overall treated his siblings, younger and older, and the rest of his family like garbage. Klaus may be stronger than all of them, including Elijah himself, but personality wise, he is not better than the rest of his siblings or his family.
  • Ambition Is Evil: Klaus achieves his goals and plans through underhanded means. He has shown that he is greedy, selfish and wants everything that he can get his hands on. He also gets intensely jealous and possessive over those whom he holds dear to him and he will do anything, including acting immorally, to make sure he has a hold on the things that he cares about. Klaus often resorts to violence and killing if he does not get his way and he will also use violent tendencies or tactics to achieve he his goals or when he wants something. He has shown that he is incredibly ruthless when it comes to getting what he wants. Klaus always aims to be at the top and will do anything to get there. For example, Klaus wanted to be the Vampire King of New Orleans and take Marcel's place, so Klaus ended up killing a bunch of Marcel's army and loyal minions just so that he could get Marcel to succumb and submit to him. Klaus has shown that he wants power over people because it is power that makes him feel like he is important. This goes back to his self esteem issues stemming to his human life and hence, why Klaus proves to be so ambitious in regards to getting or achieving something that he really desires whether it is in the form of family, money, status or love.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: To Elijah, for whom he usually causes problems. Klaus has proven that in terms of personality and outlook, Elijah is more serious, stoic, calm, collected and rational while Klaus has proven that he is very hotheaded, impulsive, over emotional, troublesome and quick tempered. Because of the differences in their personalities, temperaments and outlooks, the two often clash and do not see eye to eye. Elijah tries to constantly talk sense into his hot headed brother but Klaus never seems to listen, which ends up causing major problems with Elijah in the long run. Even though Klaus has managed to consistently disappoint Elijah with his actions, Elijah still manages to be as loyal to Klaus as possible and even tries to believe that there might be a chance for Klaus to redeem himself and change his behaviour and his ways. In comparison to Elijah, Klaus comes off as very pouty, spoiled and bratty when he does not get his way and it seems as though Elijah becomes more of a paternal opt parent figure for Klaus rather than a brother figure.
    • He seems to become this for Freya. He takes an especial delight in scaring off her one-night stands and teasing her about her partying.
  • Anti-Villain: Klaus is Type I and Type II. Klaus is Type I, a Noble Demon, as Klaus himself seems to have no problem with committing constant immoral acts and deeds and he seems to embrace the fact that he is a villain who will resort to underhanded and immoral means to achieve his agenda and his goals. However, there are times when Klaus actually has some standards and will not resort to killing all of the time to get what he wants. Klaus has shown that he is capable of doing things more diplomatically than violently. Klaus has shown that he Wouldn't Hurt a Child despite the fact that in the beginning, when he was very skeptical, he wanted Hayley and his unborn child to die. Klaus was also very shocked and disturbed when Caroline had asked Klaus if he was going to hurt her or kill her on her birthday. Klaus has also shown that he is capable of showing humanity, especially in his interactions with Elijah, Rebekah, Marcel, Camille, Hayley and his daughter Hope. His biggest Morality Pet seems to be Cami, as she has become The Conscience and a close friend for him to trust and confide in when he needs to. He also has plenty of Pet the Dog moments with Cami, as his interactions with her are very tender and heartwarming. He is very protective of Camille, always doing his best to protect her and keep her out of harm's way, even if means that keeping his distance.
    • Klaus is also a Type II, a Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds. Although Klaus embraces the fact that he is a villain and that he constantly commits horrible deeds, it is obvious that Klaus became the way he is because of his Dark and Troubled Past. He comes from a highly dysfunctional family of abuse and psychological damage. His father, Mikael, has continuously abused him spiritually, physically, mentally, and psychologically, to the point where he became so inherently damaged that there was almost no point of return. Klaus tends to act out and commit immoral deeds for his family and his own survival. He is very ruthless when he wants to be but there are many circumstances which led him to become that way. Klaus is The Unfavorite in his family and everyone always turns their backs on him. He feels like the Black Sheep within the family and he never felt like he fit in within his family. Part of this is because Klaus is a Bastard Bastard due to the fact that his mother Esther had an affair on Mikael with an unknown man who was a werewolf. Therefore, Klaus was born an un-triggered werewolf. When his father Mikael turned the entire family into vampires and Klaus made his first human kill, it triggered the werewolf gene, which caused him to become hot headed, violent and angry. Klaus own inner demons of self esteem issues and growing up in an abusive household and upbringing has made Klaus become the violent, blood thirsty and dark character that he has come to be in the current times.
    • Despite having some positive traits, he is not above killing children. He has done this numerous times, sometimes for petty reasons too. He killed the two young twin children of Papa Tunde, though this was a tactical choice as Tunde used them to draw power from but Klaus tried to kill Tim and Davina, simply because she didn't want to be his weapon, he succeeded but Davina was brought back via a protection spell Marcel has arranged.
  • Archnemesis Dad: This works both ways for Klaus. His own father (his stepfather really) Mikael is his greatest enemy. For centuries upon centuries, Mikael has hunted Klaus down and has made it his mission to kill Klaus. Mikael has always hated Klaus because he is the illegitimate offspring of his wife Esther and an unknown man who was a werewolf. For this, Mikael does not see Klaus as his son or his own since he is not his blood. Flashbacks show that Mikael was very abusive towards Klaus since childhood and often abused him spiritually, emotionally, and physically. His siblings would often have to stop Mikael's abusive ways towards Klaus so that Klaus would not be even more psychologically damaged. The major reason why Klaus becomes the way he does and goes from a fun loving, gentle and free spirited soul to someone who becomes so dark, twisted, sociopathic and vengeful is because of Mikael and his abuse and hatred against Klaus.
    • Also in regards to Marcel, whom he sees as a son. Technically, Marcel is considered to be Klaus' adopted son. While not related to each other biologically, Klaus did raise him. He brought him up when his real parents, his father being the Governor, had abandoned him because he was nothing more than a mere slave. Klaus saw a lot of himself in Marcel, someone who was treated horribly, abused and battered. Despite the fact that they share such things in common, Marcel and Klaus have also schemed to kill each other. It's also what Klaus fears his offspring will see him as, someone that she will grow to hate because of who he is and what he has done.
  • Ax-Crazy: Klaus is the epitome of psychologically unstable, and he is rather dangerous. Klaus obviously presents a very clear danger to others. He threatens to kill or hurt others if he is either crossed or if he is angry. Klaus is capable of extreme violence and murderous rage, especially if he is crossed. Klaus is also the type to go off at any short second and he can go from calm, cool and collected to downright angry, crazy and murderous. Klaus has shown that he is Hot-Blooded and has a Hair-Trigger Temper and even minor things can set him off. Klaus is also into killing and going on murderous rampages and he always seems to be ready to fight someone in the most violent and gruesome way as he is a Blood Knight. He is capable of getting extremely jealous, homicidally so and he has shown that if he does not get his way, he will resort to violence and lashing out at others.
  • Badass Boast: Basically all of the time. When is Klaus not boasting? He constantly makes threats towards others, including his own family. He says that if his family ever gets in the way of getting what he wants when he wants it, he will not hesitate to dagger them and put them in coffins, just like he has done for centuries upon centuries repeatedly. If anyone tries to get in Klaus' way in any way, shape or form, Klaus will not hesitate to threaten to kill them right on the spot. He also brags about how powerful he is and that he can take down anyone with much ease. Klaus even considers himself the most powerful supernatural being on earth, which he takes significant pride in. Klaus seems to thrive on being powerful and obtaining power at all cost, even by bragging about himself or making threats towards others to get it.
  • Badass in Charge: He was the Vampire King of New Orleans. This granted him power over the French Quarter, and he was therefore in charge of all of the vampires, werewolves and witches that live in the quarter. Klaus was actually the Co-King of New Orleans with Marcel as Klaus had asked Marcel to rule New Orleans with him together.
    • When Klaus became the sole leader, no one respected or liked him due to his methods and lack of what seemed to be competent leadership. He tried to rule through fear, aggression and threats rather than respect and love, which got Marcel an Undying Loyalty filled vampire army. Even the human faction preferred Marcel.
  • Bad Boss: Very much so; either you're with him or you're dead. He tends to view his Vampire subjects as expendable and lost half of them when he gave a speech pretty much saying as much. He slaughtered his previous Hybrids for trying to take him down so they could be free, attempted to convince Marcel's followers to switch sides by threatening those who didn't with eternal torture, and seems to think that because he's the most powerful, he is due unwavering loyalty from those beneath him. However, this could be an unfortunate side effect of his Hybrid nature. The curse of heightened emotions from his Vampire side contribute to amplify his already berserker like Werewolf aggression. His father Mikael also use to literally beat Klaus for any form of weakness. Then you have an Immortal who thinks that might makes right and responds to any sort of challenge to that mindset with murderous rage.
    • Does this again with the newly enhanced werewolves who want to protect Hope, except he was never their boss. Hayley and Jackson are the alphas and married each other to empower their packs with Hayley's unique hybrid powers, Klaus has since then acted like they are his personal army and tries to order them about, he even says "if they are not fighting for me, they won't live to fight at all." He tries to get them to go after Mikael rather than protect Hope due to his own fear, Hayley promptly shuts this down.
  • Barbarian Longhair: In the flashbacks to his human days.
  • Bastard Bastard: Klaus is the illegitimate child of Esther and Ansel, a werewolf. Klaus never knew him before his death.
  • Beast and Beauty: Downplayed. Klaus is the Beast to Camille's Beauty. Klaus physically looks like a human but he is technically a beast as he can shift into a werewolf. He is also an Original Hybrid which means that he is half vampire and half werewolf. This sort of makes Klaus sort of a Humanoid Abomination as with the exception of Tyler, who is no human again and Hayley who has now become a Hybrid, and his daughter hope, there is no one else of his kind. Klaus is also very dangerous and highly capable of violence and destruction. He has shown that he will go the lengths to protect Camille from harm. Camille is a human girl who is beautiful, sweet, kind, compassionate and caring. She also brings out the best in Klaus and serves as a Morality Pet for him. She is also highly naive and idealistic, believing that not everyone is fully evil and that circumstances make people the way they are whether they turn out good or bad.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Rebekah. Sometimes also with Hayley and Camille.
  • The Berserker: Klaus is very impulsive and throws himself amidst violence without a second thought.
  • Berserk Button: Never defy him, screw with one of his plans, and if you try to kill him and fail, you'd better start to run as fast as you can. Most importantly, no one, no one but him is allowed to hurt his loved ones, unless he gives you his consent. And if he does, follow the plan to the letter. Also, do not betray him. Ever.
    • Never, ever, ever try to keep him away from his daughter. You will suffer the consequences, no matter who you are. Especially if you're her mother.
    • Perhaps more importantly, never try to replace him as his daughter's father.
  • Big Bad: For the entire series.
  • Black Sheep: Klaus is this to his family, especially to his father Mikael. He doesn't really fit in and he seems to be ostracized by most of them.
  • Blood Knight: Klaus has shown to be very violent and he gets a thrill out of fighting.
  • Breakout Villain: Klaus was a very popular character on The Vampire Diaries, hence why he was given his own series, The Originals.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Klaus is the Brooding Boy to Camille's Gentle Girl. Klaus is a cynical Byronic Hero who has a very Dark and Troubled Past. He is sociopathic, dark and sinister in personality and he broods a lot because he comes from such a dysfunctional background. Klaus is obviously filled with much darkness and has many demons. Cami, on the hand, is a Nice Girl and a Girl Next Door, who is generally kind, compassionate, caring and understanding. Despite having her own inner demons and having suffered her own pain and trauma, Cami is still the Plucky Girl who still remains optimistic regardless, which serves as a bit of a foil for Klaus. Cami has shown that she brings out the nicer and kinder side of Klaus' personality and even manages to make a generally brooding Klaus crack a smile from time to time.
  • Cain and Abel: Klaus is the Cain to Elijah's Abel. Klaus is the sociopathic, evil and darker brother and Elijah is the more noble, moral and upstanding brother, though the birth order is inverted. Interestingly enough, Klaus and Elijah's relationship with each other directly parallel's Damon and Stefan's relationship, with Damon being the Klaus (Cain) and Stefan being the Elijah (Abel). Similar to Klaus, Damon is sociopathic, dangerous, immoral, and sadistic. Similar to Elijah, Stefan is more noble, moral, compassionate, and upstanding. Klaus and Elijah often clash because of their opposing personalities and beliefs, which has led to a lifelong Sibling Rivalry, just like Damon and Stefan.
  • The Casanova: Klaus likes to charm women, manipulate them, use them, and then dump them... or kill them.
  • The Charmer: Comes with being The Casanova and a Manipulative Bastard.
  • The Chessmaster: Klaus is very intelligent, manipulative, and scheming.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Klaus will never hesitate to backstab anyone, literally. He has daggered his entire family multiple times over the centuries. Small wonder nobody ever truly trusts him.
  • Chronic Villainy: Klaus just can't help himself from committing bad or evil acts. Sometimes one wonders if he is capable of changing or being truly redeemed.
  • Comedic Sociopathy: Klaus is sociopathic and manipulative, but he can be very funny and witty at the same time even amidst committing immoral acts.
  • Corrupt the Cutie: Subverted. His interactions with Camille pull her dangerously close to the actual conflict of the series, but he seems to be aware of this and wants her out of harm's way.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Klaus has a strong tendency to get extremely jealous and envious, homicidally so. He has shown frequent jealousy in regards to Hayley and her relationship and bond with Elijah, mostly because Klaus feels threatened that Elijah is moving in on his family and his daughter. He also shows strong shades of jealousy and possessiveness over Camille. He even said that because Camille slept with Marcel, he told Camille to her face that he would kill Marcel. Klaus has also shown that he gets jealous over every single guy that Rebekah gets involved with, which only increases the Incest Subtext. Klaus has gotten so jealous over Rebekah's love interests that he has managed to kill almost every single one of them (with the exception of Stefan because Klaus actually loved Stefan himself).
  • Crazy-Prepared: Klaus always has a plan. And if Plan A doesn't work out, then a Plan B, and a Plan C, etc.
  • Cultured Badass: Klaus is Wicked Cultured, and is highly sophisticated, cultured and chic. Klaus is also rich and he spends money on lavish and expensive things. He seems to have a penchant for decorating, and obviously spends his time going to museums and art galleries. Klaus has also proven that he is a very good artist himself, as he loves to draw. He is also knowledgeable about a wide variety of topics, such as art, literature, food, and he has been exposed to many different cultures over the centuries due to travelling all around the world. Klaus even became a British nobleman during the 1400's and adopted the British way of living.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Put it this way: Marcel's vampire army did not stand a chance against Klaus.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He was abused and belittled by his father, tortured, and turned into a vampire hybrid.
  • Dark Is Evil: Klaus is seen wearing a lot of darker clothing, particularly black. He is never seen wearing lighter clothing, indicating a dark and immoral character.
  • Dark Messiah: Klaus is the only Original Hybrid on the planet, making him extremely powerful and dangerous.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He has his share of witty comebacks, lines and phrases.
  • The Determinator: Klaus NEVER gives up when he has a goal, agenda or plan that he wishes to achieve.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: His punishment towards anyone who displeases him in the slightest.
  • The Dreaded: Marcel's vampires are very, very nervous about the idea of him running loose in New Orleans.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: All Klaus has ever wanted was loyalty and respect from others, especially from his own family.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Even though Klaus is a villain, he has been shown to be capable of love and affection. He does love his sister and brother, all things considered, and adores his daughter. He has also shown some affection for Hayley as the mother of his child and has also shown that he cares for Camille. Klaus also cares for Marcel and sees him as a son.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Seemed horrified when Caroline asked if he was going to kill her on her birthday.
    • While not even his favourite siblings are safe from his wrath, Klaus is extremely reluctant to ever harm his daughter, and never actively does so.
  • Evil Brit: Klaus has a British accent due to Joseph Morgan being from Britain.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: One of Klaus' biggest flaws. He thinks everyone is running an angle, which is why when he comes up against Marcel, who is willing to submit to him to protect Davina and his vampires and prevent a war in New Orleans that would endanger everyone, or Jackson, who is willing to die to protect Hayley and the wolves, his first instinct is to think they're trying to harm him.
  • Evil Genius: Klaus is very intelligent, strategic and manipulative.
  • Evil Gloating: When is Klaus not gloating? It could practically be his middle name (if he were to have one).
  • Evil Is Hammy: Klaus is not always subtle and can be rather grandiose and over the top in his actions and mannerisms.
  • Evil Is Petty: His occasional and casual cruelty speaks for itself.
  • Evil Tastes Good: Well, Klaus is a vampire and a werewolf.
  • Fallen Hero: If you look back at when Klaus was human, he was actually a kind, gentle soul who loved to have fun. All that changed when he felt responsible and blamed himself for the death of his younger brother Henrik, became a vampire and unleashed his werewolf side as well.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: With Marcel.
  • First Of Its Kind: Klaus is the very first Original Hybrid.
  • Foil: To Elijah. Klaus is the immoral brother and Elijah is the moral brother. This mirrors the brother dynamic between the Salvatore brothers (with Klaus and Elijah paralleling Damon and Stefan respectively). Like Klaus, Damon is immoral, sociopathic and dark in character whiles like Elijah, Stefan is moral, compassionate and upstanding.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: Elijah and Rebecca tend to forgive him after a while for all the things he does to them, but they never forget, and they will every once in a while throw everything he has ever done in his face when he starts to go to far again.
  • For the Evulz: Klaus will gleefully torture or kill anyone if it benefits his plans or even amuses him.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Choleric
  • Freudian Trio: Is part of five, actually. In promotional material, he's the Id to Elijah's Superego and Rebekah's Ego.
  • Generation Xerox: Klaus has a lot more in common with Mikael than he would like to think or believe.
  • A God Am I: "I want to be King."
  • Godzilla Threshold: Klaus is this for the witches of New Orleans. They're so desperate to end Marcel's tyranny that they summon an Original vampire into their hometown just to even the odds.
    • Turns out to be a lie by the witches, Marcel was in fact a "good" guy using ruthless methods to protect Davina from said witches who wanted to sacrifice her, they just wanted Marcel out of the way so they could get to Davina.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Klaus is very quick tempered and gets angered very easily.
  • Has a Type: Seems to have a "thing" for girls with blonde hair and blue eyes, who aren't cowed by him and can see what little goodness he has. Aka Rebekah and the like, Caroline and Camille both being Rebekah's substitutes.
    • Of course his past loves subvert this with brown-haired, brown-eyed Tatia and red-haired hazel-eyed Aurora.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Klaus has had quite a bit of heartbreak along the way in regards to his family, his friends, and his love life. He has a very tumultuous relationship with his siblings, primarily Elijah and Rebekah, both of whom have tried to remain loyal to him, yet Klaus keeps disappointing them repaetdly in some way. This has caused Elijah and Rebekah to turn their back on him many times. His father, Mikael, hated him and abused him as a child; he also spent centuries upon centuries trying to hunt Klaus down and kill him. Not to mention that within the family, Klaus is the Black Sheep and The Unfavorite who is constantly looked down upon by everyone. Klaus is also a Bastard Bastard as he is the illegitimate child of his mother Esther and an unknown man who was a werewolf and whom his mother had an affair with behind Mikael's back. Because of this fact, Klaus has never felt like he fit in with the family and he has always felt 'different'. Klaus' family life and his upbringing has been complete and utter dysfunction. Nevermind his friendships and his love life. Every single friend or companion that Klaus has made has either died, has turned their back on him or has betrayed him somehow. Not to say that it is not without good reason why every single person that Klaus gets close to wants to or manages to turn their back on Klaus considering his constant immoral and evil acts and deeds and the way he treats others. Regardless, it paints Klaus in a sympathetic light that nobody seems to remain loyal to him for too long. It seems Klaus has a case of I Just Want to Be Loved and I Just Want to Have Friends, which is why Klaus tries to control others through the use of compulsion to gain respect and loyalty. Klaus' love life is also a disaster. His First Love (when he was human) was a young and beautiful woman named Tatia, who was a Petrova doppelgänger. According to Elijah, Klaus loved her more than anything, even though Elijah had feelings for her as well. When Tatia had died, Klaus became depressed and became cynical about love. It could be argued that Klaus' opinion regarding love and becoming cynical about the topic in general was because of Tatia and how the Love Triangle between himself, Tatia and Elijah sparked a Sibling Rivalry between the two brothers, with history repeating itself later on during the 15th century with a Love Triangle forming between himself, Katherine and Elijah. Although, Klaus was not really in love with Katherine the way he was in love with Tatia and only wanted Katherine so that eh could sacrifice her in order to break his hybrid curse. Klaus has engaged in many sexual flings with numerous women throughout the centuries but he has never really been in a serious romantic relationship with one woman for too long. the last woman that he ever had deep feelings for was Tatia, although he did have feelings for Caroline and could be showing some romantic feelings for Camille as well. He really becomes heartbroken in season 3 when Camille dies after they finally acknowledge their feelings for each other leading to them sleeping together and it turning out that she was compelled to kill herself by one of his first loves and he sees her dead body when he wakes up. Though of course it turns out she was fed vampire blood and eventually becomes a vampire, but becoming a vampire makes her cold towards him as she is dealing with the changes. Then eventually she is bitten by Lucien who has become a new breed of hybrid and she is poisoned with an incurable werewolf venom and she eventually dies again for real this time with Klaus spending the last moments of her life in the dream world with her to ease the pain of her death.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In the season 3 finale he gives himself up to Marcel and manipulates him into stabbing him with Papa Tunde's knife, so that his body could be used as an anchor for a spell by Freya to preserve Kol, Rebecca, Elijah, and herself to prevent them from dying from the hybrid venom that was given to them by Marcel when he bit them.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Stefan (back in the 1920's).
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Klaus finally got what was coming to him after years of abusing his family with silver daggers. He is stabbed by Elijah with one of the many daggers he has used, this one being the one stolen by Kol years ago and recently transmuted to gold to work on Klaus.
  • Hot-Blooded: Klaus is very impulsive, brash, and hot headed.
  • Humiliation Conga: Has gone through this a lot all within a span of only 9 episodes.
  • Hybrid Power: Klaus is, with the exception of Mikael, who is stronger, physically the most powerful being on the planet. He is the Original Hybrid after all (meaning that he is half vampire and half werewolf), and the first of his kind. Because of this, he's extra strong and badass. He possesses all the superhuman abilities that are given to an Original vampire such as Super Strength, Super Speed, Super Senses, Immortality, Super Reflexes, Healing Factor, Super Toughness or Nigh-Invulnerability, Inhuman Emotion, Dream Weaver, Mind Manipulation, and Telepathy but because Klaus is a Hybrid, he also has some abilities which are unique to him such as Shapeshifting, Involuntary Shapeshifter, Daywalking Vampire, Immune to Bullets and cannot be neutralized with the silver Daggers or a regular stake (whick knocks out Orignals) Klaus is also slightly stronger than his siblings due to having werewolf strength (human-form version) to go with his vampire one, and has special blood which enables him to heal werewolf or hybrid bites for vampires and his blood is the only thing that can cure werewolf bites which is deemed fatal for all vampires.
  • I Am Not My Father: Becoming like Mikael is Klaus' worse nightmare. Ironically, Klaus and Mikael share a lot of traits.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: He justifies most of his actions as this, even the actions he takes to protect his daughter.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Seemingly a large part of his desire to create his own race. He bitterly refers to Stefan as his only companion. Of course, any sympathy this might evoke rather vanishes when one remembers that the reason why he's so alone is he murdered his entire family.
  • Immortality: Klaus is an Original vampire/hybrid. He is capable of living forever without physically aging. Although he physically looks like someone in their 20's, he is actually over 1,000 years old. He cannot die under normal circumstances.
  • Informed Attribute: Klaus will let you know that he's a hybrid, even though he has only transformed into a wolf once.
  • Insane Equals Violent: Klaus can be crazy, vicious, and murderous when he wants to be.
  • It's All About Me: Klaus is the epitome of selfish and everything is all about him; his pain, his power, and his agenda.
    • When Hayley and Jackson marry so that Hayley's powers can be shared with the entire packs of Hayley and Jackson, so they can free them from the witches' control, Klaus steps in and acts like they are his personal army, trying to order them about and even threatening to kill them all if they don't fight for him.
  • Jerkass: Klaus can be deeply unpleasant, even without the murderous side of him.
  • Joker Immunity: Has developed this because of his statuses as Breakout Villain, Ensemble Dark Horse and Creator's Pet.
  • Kick the Morality Pet: He cares for Camille and is concerned about her safety in the upcoming war. That doesn't stop him from mind-wiping her once she's served his needs.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: To Rebekah.
  • Lack of Empathy: To a great extent.
  • Large Ham: Klaus can be rather over the top at times, especially when he gets angry and throws a tantrum.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Is given a taste of his own medicine for the first time in 1,000 years by being daggered with a gold dagger (Klaus is immune to the silver ones). Now the siblings have a dagger just for him in case he gets out of line, or at least until Dahlia destroys it.
    • Haley taking their daughter, Hope away from him and forbidding him from seeing her since he was the reason she was cursed to her wolf form which prevented her from being in the child's life for months with the exception of the nights of a full moon.
  • Like a Son to Me: Marcel is for all intents and purposes Klaus' son. He raised him as his own and has been known to go to insane lengths to keep Marcel safe, even if it means expressly going against Marcel's wishes.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Klaus is always manipulating somebody in order to achieve his goal or agenda.
  • Meaningful Name: Niklaus (which is the German or Scandinavian version of Nicholas) means "victory of the people". It is derived from the Greek Nikolaos (Νικόλαος).
  • Mind Rape: Does this to Camille so she doesn't remember any of their talks.
  • Monster Lord: Klaus is the Original Hybrid and has created hybrids himself, though they tend to be Red Shirts and completely easy to kill despite the fact that they're supposed to be superior to vampires and werewolves.
  • Monster Sob Story: Although he's the villain, the flashbacks of his human life have managed to give some viewers a more sympathetic point of view for Klaus.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: His go to move any problem, one that has caused more trouble than it's worth. His siblings and Cami are attempting to change Klaus out of that mindset. Even Klaus admits his tendency to drop bodies has caused more enemies and problems then results. As such he has been working to remedy that. Unfortunately nine out of ten times that is still his first instinct and Elijah barely prevented Klaus from beheading Jackson on his wedding day.
  • Ninja Pirate Robot Zombie: He's a werewolf and a vampire.
  • Noble Male, Roguish Male: The Roguish to Elijah's Noble.
  • Not So Different: From Mikael. Both treat their family in cruel ways, have inventive ways of hurting people, are determined to their very core, and place high importance on family. They even look like each other, despite not being related by blood.
  • Oh, Crap!: From time to time, when dealing with a true threat such as his father.
  • Papa Wolf: To his daughter, Hope.
  • Pet the Dog: His moments with Camille count. In the beginning of the series, he was much kinder to Hayley.
  • Perma-Stubble: He keeps a bristly look.
  • Plot Armor: Despite virtually everyone in the cast constantly trying to kill him, and coming ridiculously close to being Killed Off for Real several times, the writers won't let him die. That is, until "Before Sunset", when he is finally put into a death-like torpor via the same spell that bound Mikael. But in the next episode he's back up again, though in a new body and after that he back in his own again. Making his comeuppance void.
    • Happens again in the Originals, Mikael succeeds in staking Klaus with the white oak stake only for it to conveniently be depowered by Davina and Kol, resulting in it only neutralizing Klaus.
    • Finally got his comeuppance in The Levee Breaks when he is neutralized with the golden dagger by Elijah... but like before, this isn't going to last more than an episode, maybe less.
  • Power Trio: See Freudian Trio above.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Klaus definitely qualifies, especially when he is angered and lashes out at others.
  • Psychotic Smirk: He's a master of implying dangerous things are about to happen with a mere smile.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Klaus was born in the 10th century. He is also immortal.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Klaus is definitely the Red to Elijah's Blue. Klaus is much more passionate while Elijah is much more stoic.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Klaus is the Savvy Guy to Camille's Energetic Girl.
  • Self-Made Orphan: He killed his mother Esther after she placed the curse that suppressed his hybrid nature. He's also responsible for Mikael's death in The Vampire Diaries. And in season two, he kills his recently resurrected biological father Ansel because he knew Hope was aalive. Of course, he later kills Mikael and his mother Esther again, along with his aunt Dahlia. He lampshades this by saying, “Well, we're officially orphans.”
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: When he wants to dress up for an event, he dresses very well.
  • Starcrossed Lovers: With Tatia. According to Elijah, Klaus loved Tatia more than anyone, including Elijah himself. Tatia was Klaus' known First Love and she was also a Petrova doppelgänger. Both of the Mikaelson brothers were in love with Tatia, which only caused severe tension and a Sibling Rivalry between the two brothers. In order to stop the feuding between the brothers over Tatia, Esther apparently ended up using her by sacrificing her to bind Klaus' hybrid or werewolf side, turns out Elijah killed Tatia, Esther took the blame and wiped the memories to spare Elijah guilt.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Seems to be even more badass than he was before on The Vampire Diaries.
  • Tranquil Fury: After Genevieve reveals to Klaus that Rebekah used to her to summon Mikael to New Orleans, he doesn't explode like he usually does. He continues to taunt and threaten Rebekah with a calm, chilling tone....
  • True Companions: With his siblings, despite everything they've done to each other.
  • The Strategist: Everything that Klaus does is strategic.
  • Undying Loyalty: Klaus desires this from others more than anybody, especially from his family. Too bad he always manages to destroy every chance of it happening.
  • The Un-Favourite: His father, Mikael, hated him and had a preference for Elijah over him. The dynamic between Klaus and Elijah mirrors that of Damon and Stefan, with Klaus as Damon and Elijah as Stefan. Like Damon, Klaus was also the un-favorite son and like Stefan, Elijah was the favorite son. Unlike Damon, however, Mikael's favoritism of Elijah was because Klaus isn't his biological son. However, he treated him like scum even before discovering that.
  • The Unfettered: Klaus doesn't care about morals and he is very ruthless; he will do anything and everything to achieve his desired goal or agenda, even if innocent people end up in danger or get killed. It also completely un-fazes him when someone gets killed.
  • Vampire Monarch: Klaus was the Vampire King of New Orleans after Marcel left.
  • Villainous Breakdown: In 1.07, after Elijah accuses him of trying to use his baby's blood to create hybrids. It's mild compared to some of the more epic tantrums he's had, but it does end with him biting Elijah.
    • He goes through this a lot in season 2 because of the return of his mother and Mikael and the threat of his aunt Dahlia coming to take his child. Also generally everyone disagreeing with him on how to deal with the threats and of course this leads to him being betrayed by his siblings when they think he has become a danger to everybody because of his breakdowns.
  • Villainous Crush: For Caroline of course. He also has this on Cami.
  • Villain Protagonist: For The Originals of course.
  • We Can Rule Together: Klaus' plan ends with him becoming the de facto ruler of New Orleans along with his siblings. He offers the same thing to Marcel in the mid-season finale when he asks Marcel to help him rule New Orleans together.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He is capable of anything when it comes to protecting his family, but especially when it comes to protecting his daughter Hope, even if it means having to hurt his siblings, the girl's mother Haley, and the people they care about which is shown by his actions in the final episodes of season 2.
  • When She Smiles: He does grin and smirk sardonically, mischievously or psychotically quite a lot, but his genuine smiles are quite the sight. So far in this series, the only time he's smiled like this is when Hayley tells him that she thinks their baby is going to be a girl.
  • Wicked Cultured: Klaus is well-educated and well-read.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Caroline seems to think so. Stefan also agrees, but it doesn't stop him from trying to backstab him every time he has the chance. The fact that he was constantly belittled by his father and cursed and shunned by his mother does bring up an interesting case.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Not in a case of Domestic Abuse, but when they pose a threat, and considering he slums about with supernatural creatures most of the women he knows are certainly dangerous.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Poor Tim...
  • Wrote the Book:
Caroline: "Why do you always have to prove you're the alpha male?"
Klaus: "I don't have to prove anything, love, I AM the alpha male!"

    Elijah Mikaelson

Elijah Mikaelson
"No-one threatens my family and lives."
Played By: Daniel Gillies & Perry Cox

Klaus: "The noble Elijah, tormented by long buried, shameful secrets."

An Original vampire, Elijah is the most sophisticated, noble and moral as well as highly hypocritical member of his family. He alternately works for Klaus and against him throughout the series. He was once in love with Katherine and tried to save her from his brother but she betrayed him. Elijah follows Klaus to New Orleans, convinced that there's a trap waiting for him. Once he finds out about Hayley being pregnant, he stays with his siblings in the hopes that Klaus' child will finally bring him some measure of peace and redeem him.

  • Affably Evil: He's an intelligent, charming man who strongly believes in honor and loyalty but he has a dark, dangerous side and he'd be able to kill whenever it suits his needs.
  • Aloof Big Brother: To Klaus, Kol, and Rebekah.
  • Anti-Villain: Type I, with shades of Type III.
  • Ascended Extra: All the Originals vampires became increasingly more important in the story, but Elijah is a particularly extreme example. Julie Plec admits that Daniel Gillie's performance and the pull of Elijah's character inspired the writers to make the Originals un-killable to keep him around. And he was originally just a "foot soldier" before being made into Klaus's brother.
  • Awful Truth: He was the one who killed Tatia a thousand years ago, when he couldn't control his bloodlust and she got injured trying to run from him. Esther - with his consent - altered his memories so he would think his mother was the one who killed her to seal Klaus' hybrid nature. The revelation has deeply affected his psyche.
  • Badass Boast: Just as much as Klaus.
  • Berserk Button: Don't harm or kill any one of Elijah's family. He will get revenge.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Elijah is usually defined as the most noble out of Klaus and Rebekah but is not afraid to showcase his vicious side when his family is threatened, which Agnes discovers the hard way.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Towards Klaus and Rebekah.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: After Esther screws with his head, for a while Elijah starts going on unwilling Ax-Crazy murder sprees, usually triggered by something as simple as a drop of blood on his clothes.
  • Cain and Abel: Elijah is the Abel to Klaus' Cain.
  • Canon Foreigner: He does not appear in the books.
  • The Charmer: Elijah is suave and sophisticated. No wonder Hayley can't help herself.
  • The Chessmaster: Elijah is very strategic and logical by nature.
  • Cultured Badass: Elijah comes from wealth and is highly sophisticated.
  • The Dandy: Elijah is always sharply and neatly dressed and never likes to look improper.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Elijah has a dry sense of humour and a quick wit. Even when he is being serious, he can be funny.
  • Defector from Decadence: He reveals that the reason he started siring vampires and founded the Stryx was so he could bring together the best and brightest of minds and work to better the world. In the end, he himself grew disgusted by their sociopathy and renounced all ties to them.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: See Badass Boast above.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Even though Elijah has done immoral things, he is still considered to be rather honourable, noble and moral by nature. Elijah was extremely noble during his human life.
  • The Fettered: Elijah is known to be a very moral, honourable person by nature.
  • Foil: To Klaus. Klaus is the immoral brother and Elijah is the moral brother. See Red Oni, Blue Oni and Noble Male, Roguish Male.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Phlegmatic and Melancholic
  • Friendly Enemy: He develops a friendship and a sort of understanding with Elena.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Elijah has faced heartache in regards to both love and his family. He hasn't been lucky in either department.
  • Heel Realization/I Am a Monster: After threatening Elena, he comes to agree with his mother's view of him as an abomination.
  • Heroic BSoD: Has one in season two, after Esther forces him to confront his darker nature, as well as the Awful Truth.
  • Honor Before Reason: Elijah is a highly noble, honourable person. Or he comes across as such. Elijah seems to value the concept of honour, and expects it from anyone else who gives him their word. Part of the reason why he broke his oath with the New Orleans witches is because they weren't honest about their true intentions towards Klaus or Hayley. Also he's a murderer, who feeds on innocent blood. Oops.
  • I Gave My Word: He swears to protect Hayley and her child from Klaus.
    • Elijah is known for being honorable and keeping to his word but he always likes to use Loop Hole Abuse when it suits him.
  • Immortality: Elijah is an Original vampire. He is capable of living forever without physically aging. Although he is 23-24, he is technically over 1,000 years old. He cannot die under normal circumstances.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Especially in the beginning. Elijah came off as cold and uncaring but he's actually rather moral and honourable by nature.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: To both Rebekah and Klaus. He is highly protective of both of them.
  • Never Hurt an Innocent: He definitely tries to adhere to this. Notably, he's the only vampire not seen feeding on a human at any point.
  • Noble Demon: He is reluctant to kill anyone and has a strong sense of nobility, honourability and morals, but he commits some immoral and morally questionable acts in order to preserve and protect the one thing he values the most: his family. However, despite his claim to nobility, he has ruthless killed many people for little reason. Trevor, who was only asking for forgiveness, was mercilessly decapitated and Slater, just for talking to Damon and Rose was compelled by Elijah to kill himself.
  • Noble Male, Roguish Male: Elijah is the Noble Male to Klaus' Roguish Male.
  • Oh, Crap!: Like Klaus, he only has this reaction when dealing with real threats such as the discovery that their parents Mikael and Esther have come back to life.
  • OOCIS Serious Business: Whatever Esther did to him has left him highly unstable and acting remarkably out of character. Klaus - the more impulsive, violent brother - has to restrain him when they deal with Kol and Finn.
  • Only Sane Man: Likes to think he is but this honour goes to Finn, though Elijah would be next in line, especially compared to Klaus, Kol and Rebekah.
  • Old Shame: Considers his creation of the Strix to be this. Originally attempted a group of immortals to ensure a better and more civilised future, instead he ended up creating a society of powerful and sociopathic ancients who play power games with nations.
  • The Patriarch: Self-proclaimed patriarch of Original family. Kind of usurped this position by boxing up Finn.
    • He's also considered the patriarch of the Stryx, and is still treated with awe by its members.
  • Power Trio:
  • Really 700 Years Old: Elijah is an Original vampire who is really 1,000 years old and was born during the 10th century.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Elijah is the Blue to Klaus' Red. Klaus is impulsive while Elijah is more logical.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: After Celeste reveals herself and kidnaps Rebekah and Klaus, Elijah vows to kill all the witches in the French Quarter.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: He kills Marcel because of Freya's vision that he will be the end of his family when it is discovered that he has the blood that will turn him into a hybrid that can kill the originals, and it was believed that he hadn't taken it yet. Then it turns out that he had already taken it and Elijah killing him turns him. Marcel eventually bites Elijah and the rest of the family except for Klaus, causing the very thing he was trying to prevent.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Elijah has had an ongoing rivalry with his brother Klaus for centuries. Elijah has even gone as far as to attempt to kill Klaus in order to stop him from breaking his hybrid curse and killing people in the process.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Elijah is the opposite of Klaus in terms of personality, outlook, values and beliefs. While Elijah is more moral, noble and upstanding, Klaus is more impulsive, immoral and reckless.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Elijah never fails to look dapper, neatly dressed and well-put together in his finest suits.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: Elijah is the epitome of chic and fashionable.
"I'm a little behind the times but I believe the term you're looking for is 'OMG'."
  • The Spock: Both to Rebekah's Kirk and Klaus' McCoy in promotional material and to Kol's McCoy and Klaus' Kirk in 3x15.
  • The Stoic: Elijah is very calm, composed and collected, even when he gets angry.
    • Not So Stoic: When the witches try to kill Hayley's baby, Elijah is constantly on the verge of a full-blown panic attack. This also serves as a clue as to how deep his feelings for her have become.
    • And then there's his wail of anguish after he finds the body of his witch lover Celeste.
  • Super Strength: Even by vampire standards, he's extremely strong and can rip other vampires' heads off with little effort. Justified because he is not a normal vampire but an original.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Elijah is the epitome of being classically handsome and dapper.
  • Tranquil Fury: Even when Elijah gets angry or enraged, he is so calm and stoic.
  • Undying Loyalty: To his entire family of course. There is nothing that he wouldn't do for them. Elijah always puts his family above everything.
  • Villain Ball: Sometimes family comes first to him, even if it means sparing/helping his murderous siblings.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Elijah tries to do the right thing by being loyal to his family but some of his methods can be rather extreme. In most instances, Elijah's heart is in the right place.
  • Wicked Cultured: All the Originals can qualify, but mostly Elijah being the most sophisticated member of the family.

     Rebekah Mikaelson

Rebekah Mikaelson
"You do not want to end up on the wrong side of me."
Played By: Claire Holt, Maisie Richardson-Sellers & Callie Mc-Clincy

Klaus: "Fierce Rebekah, willing to risk everything on the chance that she might one day find happiness."

An Original vampire, Rebekah Mikaelson is a member of the Original Family. She had a romance with Stefan in the 1920s. Klaus staked her when she chose Stefan over him. She was unstaked by Klaus in an effort to find out why his hybrids were failing. Her cruel nature masks her emotional insecurity. Originally, Rebekah declined to come to New Orleans, and only showed up because she was convinced that Elijah had gotten in trouble due to his need to redeem Klaus. She says she wants to leave, but events conspire to keep her in this city that has such bittersweet memories for her.

  • Berserk Button: Hurting or killing any of her family members. If one messes with her family, she will no doubt get revenge. Also, betraying Rebekah in any way, shape or form is a huge NO-NO. If one betrays Rebekah, watch her wrath.
  • Betty and Veronica: The Veronica to Camille's Betty for Marcel's Archie.
  • Break the Cutie: Her past qualifies.
  • Brutal Honesty: All the time.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Rebekah to Mikael.
  • Canon Foreigner: Rebekah as a character doesn't exist in the novel series.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: A common victim of this, it makes the fact that she's so bitchy understandable because she probably has problems trusting anyone.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: With Stefan in The Vampire Diaries and now with Marcel on The Originals.
  • Dark Action Girl: Rebekah is an Action Girl with a little bit of edge. She can be very ruthless when she needs to be and when she wants to be. She can easily put the male characters in their place without hesitation. If anyone so much as crosses her or her family in any way, shape, or form, Rebekah can prove to be a force to be reckoned with. Rebekah can actually prove to be quite cruel and sometimes she will show no mercy. She has shown that she is willing to let Klaus suffer from time to time in order to put him in his place if he crosses the line. However, she has shown that while she likes to be feared and intimidating to others, she also secretly yearns for companionship and love. She even admits that she wants to be human.
  • The Dark Chick: The opposite of Camille, who is The Chick. While Camille represents the Nice Girl and The Heart of the show, Rebekah has proven that she is significantly more ruthless and cunning.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Not as much as her brothers but she certainly has her witty moments.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: She's all for betraying Klaus and keeping him locked away to rot for eternity, but she draws the line at anyone hurting Hayley's baby.
    • And while she's done some horrible things both on and offscreen, she's horrified by Eva St. Clair, the child-killing witch whose body she possessed.
  • Evil Feels Good
  • Evil Is Petty: Her brothers are schemers and manipulators with big plans. Rebekah seems content with being as unpleasant as possible to people she doesn't like, namely Elena.
  • The Fashionista: Rebekah is shown to be quite trendy and fashionable. She seems to have an affinity with clothes.
  • Femme Fatale: She's beautiful, free-spirited and good at manipulating people.
  • Foil: To Camille.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Melancholic
  • Girly Bruiser: Very feminine but won't hesitate to kick ass whenever possible.
  • Girly Girl: Rebekah is really feminine and enjoys all the girly things, including fashion.
  • Has a Type: Nice, human men, as evidenced by the governor's son, Matt, and Marcel before he turned- though it should be noted she has contemplated turning her lovers before.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite her aggressive nature, Rebekah has shown to be emotionally fragile. She very much wants to be like a normal teenager, and longs to have the normal teenage life she missed out on. Before being turned into a vampire, she used to be a sweet and normal girl, as seen in the flashbacks.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: She actually does have a good reason for basically abandoning Marcel in New Orleans. Mostly because Mikael had rolled into town and laid siege to their home and for all appearances it appeared that Marcel had perished in the fire that lit up half of the Quarter.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: The girl will go to some very self-destructive ends for even the slightest amount of affection.
  • Immortality: Rebekah is an Original vampire. She is capable of living forever and cannot physically age. Even though she looks like a teenager, she is technically over 1,000 years old.
  • The Kirk: In promotional material, with Klaus as The McCoy and Elijah as The Spock.
  • Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: Rebekah is the Dark Feminine to Camille's Light Feminine.
  • Love Hungry: Rebekah seems to desire to be loved more than anything. Unfortunately, all she has gotten is heartache and betrayal. It is no wonder that Rebekah became the way she is.
  • Love Martyr: In regards to Klaus and her family. Even when Klaus treated Rebekah like crap for centuries, she never stopped loving him and remained loyal to him no matter what. She later grows more of a backbone in regards to Klaus and his behavior as of recently though.
  • Mama Bear: Rebekah is very protective of her family.
    • This protective streak is all the more apparent when it comes to her niece. She's willing to put down her own brother when she sees that he's not stable and could be a threat to the child.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Rebekah is very physically attractive and fashionable.
  • Outnumbered Sibling: The second youngest of 6 siblings and the only girl who spent a thousand years that way until her long lost sister Freya was introduced.
  • Pet the Dog: All of her scenes with Matt count as he is perhaps the first genuinely kind, affectionate and loving person she has ever been with. After a thousand years of abuse and heartbreak, it's desperately needed.
    • Her scenes with Hayley in The Originals would also count.
  • Power Trio: With herself, Klaus and Elijah. See The Kirk above.
  • Proper Lady: Especially in the flashbacks.
  • Put on a Bus: Rebekah is exiled by Klaus to give her the freedom she wants and to stop the toxic family dynamic that the two developed with one another.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Rebekah is really 1,000 years old and was born during the 10th century.
  • Remember the New Guy?: She was with Klaus and Elijah when Katherine was human, despite not being shown.
  • Rich Bitch: The Originals come from a wealthy background.

     Freya Mikaelson

Freya Mikaelson
"Not three months ago, you utterly despised me, and now you're playing protective brother."
Played By: Riley Voelkel & Elle Graham

Dahlia: "I actually pity you. Over the course of our long lives together, I could see you were broken. I used to think it was my fault, but in time, I learned your ability to love died long ago."

Freya Mikaelson is the oldest of the Mikaelson siblings. Her mother Esther made a deal with her aunt Dahlia so she could conceive exchange for the life of her first-born and every first-born of each generation that carries Esther's bloodline. Sure enough, Dahlia came to collect and took Freya from her mother. To cover for her death, Esther told Mikael and her other children that their sister had died of the plague. Only Finn and Esther know the truth of what happened to her. Except that Freya's not dead as everyone thinks she is. She managed to grow into a young woman, and her body is currently kept in the secret witch asylum, while her spirit haunts the building. Rebekah - currently trapped in another woman's body and in the witch asylum itself - is the only one who's aware of her existence, though she doesn't know her name. Eventually, Freya breaks the seal on the Fauline mansions and helps Rebekah escape, but not before giving her a message that she'll be back to meet the rest of her siblings soon.

  • Aloof Older Brother: To all of her siblings of course, but primarily to Rebekah.
  • Antagonistic Offspring: She understandably despises Esther for letting Dahlia take her away. When Finn asks if Freya wants her woken up from the sleep he put her in, Freya says that Esther can rot for all she cares.
    • When they eventually talk, Freya has nothing but a millennium of scorn and hatred towards Esther. And then she - for lack of a better word - incapacitates her at the end of the episode.
  • Back from the Dead: She wakes up from a century of suspended animation not long after Rebekah finds her.
  • Badass Adorable: She's entranced by cartoons and has an air of childish innocence about her. She can also tear through a group of witches like they were wet paper.
  • Berserk Button: Freya despises traitors and people who turn on their friends, likely due to the first betrayal by Esther that resulted in her being raised by Dahlia. Which is why she kills Cassie in the most horrifyingly painful way, whereas she killed the other Kindred quickly.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She's shown to be rather protective of Rebekah, who coincidentally is the youngest of the living family while Freya is the oldest of the family. Although, it seems that the Knight Templar Big Sister might be a better fit for Freya.
    • At the end of the second season, she offers to put Rebekah's soul back in Eva's body, so she can have a chance to live a normal life and have children of her own. Rebekah happily accepts.
    • After Klaus learns of a prophecy that foretells his doom, she leaves a bottle of whiskey for him, along with a handwritten note of support.
  • Bi the Way : In season 3 she is seen picking up guys from bars. As of episode 4x07 she is in a relationship with Keelin, a female werewolf.
  • Daddy's Girl: The flashbacks to her childhood show that Mikael was especially fond of her. Esther even says she was 'the apple of his eye'. Their reunion in "They All Asked For You" shows how true this is. He hugs her when he realizes who she is, and calls her 'my beautiful Freya'.
    • Freya's also the only one who weeps openly when Klaus stakes Mikael in 2.18.
  • Despair Event Horizon: She was forced to watch her lover die and in a botched attempt to end her life, she accidentally aborted her baby. Freya now wants nothing more than Daliah dead.
  • Deus Exit Machina: Freya is second only to Dahlia in terms of magical power, and was able to turn Esther into a murder of ravens. She's even powerful enough to defeat Finn, making her a threat to Elijah and Klaus. The writers have used the "she is busy/out of town/drunk" excuse with her several times to stop her from being able to solve problems for the protagonists.
  • Exact Words: She promises Finn she'll keep him safe from Klaus, which she does by pulling his soul out of his witch body and trapping him in her pendant.
  • Hot Witch: She is an attractive young woman, and even in death she could still use her powers to communicate with her little sister.
  • I Cannot Self-Terminate: Freya drank poison in an attempt to free herself from Dahlia. It didn't work, as the spell that keeps them alive makes them completely invulnerable to any harm. As of season three she is no longer immortal
  • Immortality: A formal immortal, immune to death for her one year of life per century. Due to her breaking that curse, she is now fully mortal. The only one among her immortal siblings
  • Immortality Inducer: She and Dahlia are kept alive with a spell that requires them to sleep for a century, and then wake up to enjoy one year of life before going back to sleep again.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: She kills the Kindred witch who broke Rebekah's hand, and then annihilates the remaining when they've got her cornered in the attic of the asylum.
  • Lady Drunk: She takes full advantage of being permanently free from Dahlia come season three, and is frequently seen in clubs either drinking or picking up guys. It's implied she's catching up on all the time she's lost.
  • My Way or the Highway: She absolutely refuses to entertain the possibility of working with Klaus to protect Hope from Dahlia, and offers an ultimatum to each of her siblings: her or Klaus. They pick Freya.
  • Not So Different: From Klaus. They were both raised and then hunted by abusive surrogate parents. As a result, they yearn for the security of family and will do anything to ensure their survival and that of those they love. It's for this reason that Klaus distrusts her so much, pointing out spending a thousand years with Dahlia must have twisted Freya the same way Mikael twisted him.
  • Only Sane Man: She didn't spend time with her siblings while under Dahlia's control. As such, she's not as affected by the deeply dysfunctional relationship they've shared for a thousand years and is pretty much the only level-headed sibling.
  • Parental Favoritism: She was the "apple" of Mikael's eye and still is if their reunion is anything to go by.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her mother Esther gave her away as part of a deal with Big Bad Dahlia so she could have a family. This inevitably leads Freya to her being an Antagonistic Offspring to Esther.
  • Person of Mass Destruction One of her first acts after waking up was to tear through the magic that had held dozens of witches prisoner, effortlessly, and with nothing more than a wave of her hand.
  • Powered by a Forsaken Child: The magic used to help Esther conceive called for the sacrifice of her first-born child.
  • Power Incontinence: If Dahlia's memories are to be trusted, Freya had great difficulty in controlling her power, to the point where she would bleed from her mouth and birds would drop from the sky, dead.
  • Really 700 Years Old: She's still kicking after a thousand years, even though she's still a mortal witch.
  • Sadistic Choice: Her mother Esther had to make one - either she lost Freya or all her children. She chose Freya.
  • Stringy-Haired Ghost Girl: She fulfills this trope, blonde hair aside, while trapped with Rebekah in what can be best described as a halfway house for powerful witches.
  • Squishy Wizard: After Dahlia's death, Freya becomes mortal again. While that leaves her more vulnerable than the rest of her siblings, she's still a very powerful witch.
  • Token Human: Of the Mikaelson's as of season three, she is the only human being in her family of immortals.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Esther said there used to be a 'light' inside her when she was a child. A millennium of being captive by an abusive aunt has, understandably, snuffed it out.
  • Walking Spoiler: Well, her page ain't half-covered in white space for nothing.

    Kol Mikaelson

Kol Mikaelson
"I appreciate you trying. But Aya never keeps her promises. Seriously, darling. But you have to let me go. The longer you stay in this coven, the more dangerous it becomes for you."

Played By: Nathaniel Buzolic, Formerly Daniel Sharman & Roman Spink

Kol: "I have been a witch, a vampire, a ghost, a witch in somebody else's body... And now, I am a bloody vampire again."

The third-youngest of the Originals, notable for being even more Ax-Crazy and violent than Klaus. He makes his first appearance in season two, after escaping the destruction of The Other Side in The Vampire Diaries, and have joined up with his mother and brother Finn to take out the rest of his siblings. His soul was in the body of a young witch named Kaleb, and he had set his sights on Davina.

In the fourteenth episode of season two, his older brother Finn cursed him to his witch body (meaning he could not body swap) to die a slow, painful, lonely death. He died surrounded by his siblings and girlfriend Davina Claire. Davina and his younger sister Rebekah swore to bring him back and in season 3, Davina was successful.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Even though Kol served as an Anti-Hero on The Vampire Diaries, it was believed by many that he didn't deserve to die at the hands of Elena and Jeremy Gilbert in Season Four, and by his own brother Finn in Season Two of The Originals.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: To Finn, Elijah and Klaus.
  • Ax-Crazy: As a vampire, Kol seemed like he killed for pleasure due to his impulse issues and lack of self control, even reveling in his carnage. However, since his return to life he is attempting to control himself for the sake of Davina. When the hunger hits, he still kills but now regrets his lack of control.
  • Back for the Dead: After disappearing after season three, he comes back midway through season 4 for a couple of episodes in which he is killed off.
  • Back from the Dead: He's brought back from the dead despite his death at Jeremy Gilbert's hands in The Vampire Diaries.
  • Badass Boast: Threatened to rip Lucien's arm off because Lucien touched his hair.
  • Barbarian Longhair: In the flashbacks to the 10th century.
  • Black Sheep: Kol is an outsider due to the fact that he is not included in the trio that his siblings share.
  • Brutally Honest: Like his sister Rebekah, Kol is honest with others even if he comes off as a jerk.
  • Canon Foreigner: Kol as a character doesn't exist in the novel series.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: He has been backstabbed by his family many times.
  • Co-Dragons: To Esther, with his brother Finn.
  • The Charmer: Even though Davina was originally furious at Kol for not being who he said he was, she eventually fell for his charm and good looks.
  • The Corrupter: To Klaus in the flashbacks, whose bad behavior seemed to get worse when he decided to undagger Kol. (Though everything Kol did was because Klaus told him to do so). It was only when a young Marcel was threatened that Klaus put him back in the coffin.
  • Cultured Badass: His knowledge of Silas, spells and rituals, charms and old fashion drinks.
  • Deadpan Snarker: The biggest one in the family. He patronizes his siblings often, challenging them with snark and contempt.
  • Dies Wide Open: After Finn's hex takes its toll on him.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: He discovers that Davina is in control of his father Mikael and the white oak stake that can kill Klaus. He keeps it to himself when Esther asks him for answers. When he switches his allegiance to Klaus, he continues to follow this trope: helping Klaus to deal with Esther while he works towards his own goals of making a dagger that can work on Klaus.
  • Dying as Yourself: Kol as a vampire was crazier than Klaus, as a mortal witch, he is merely cheeky, snarky and wily. This is because vampirism heightens emotions and the aspects of one's personality, even the negative parts. He says he is glad to be himself with no bloodlust or heightened emotions.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Namely his girlfriend Davina Claire and sister Rebekah.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Kol is horrified at Davina's decision to work for the Strix, telling her that whatever power they promise her (i.e, the power to bring him back to life) isn't worth what they'll make her do.
  • Face Death with Dignity: As Kol was dying from the curse his own brother placed on him, he helped save his baby niece from suffering the same fate as him. He claimed that he would be damned if Finn gets what he wants.
  • Happily Married: To Davina.
  • Hidden Depths: Although Kol comes off as vain, unpredictable and dangerous, he secretly is more in touch with his emotions than others think. His cockiness is used as defense when in reality he feels less than, due to the rejection from his parents and siblings.
  • Honey Trap: As Kaleb, he's sent to be a Honey Trap for Davina. This is averted, as he becomes fond of her.
  • Hot-Blooded: Like his father, older brother Klaus, and younger sister Rebekah.
  • Hot Witch: He's possessed the body of a young witch and quickly uses his good looks to ingratiate himself with Davina.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Before he dies, he tells his siblings that all he ever wanted was to feel like he mattered to them.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: He actually prefers magic to vampirism. As a child, he displayed magical tendencies and would have likely followed his mother's footsteps if he hadn't been turned. Even during his vampire years, he mostly ran with witches and convinced a coven of New Orleans witches (the 'prettiest' one being Davina's ancestor) to create dark objects for him to practice magic.
  • In Love with the Mark: Has very deep feelings for Davina Claire That fondness is mutual, and they both share their first kiss in the mid-season finale.
  • Insane Equals Violent: Takes out all his anger towards his siblings and towards losing his magic on the innocent.
  • Living Forever Is Awesome: Actually the opposite. Kol hated being a vampire.
  • Monster Sob Story: He feels as though his parents and siblings wouldn't care if he died or not and he lashes out for attention (which usually backfires).
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: Instead of compelling or healing his victims, he drains their bodies, killing them.
  • The Nicknamer: He refers to his brother Klaus as "Nik," his sister Rebekah as "Bex," his girlfriend Davina Claire as "Darling" and "Love".
  • Oh, Crap!: Elijah's face when Klaus revealed he undaggered Kol says it all. Kol's antics become too much even for Klaus and so he put him back in the box.
  • Only Sane Man: Kol wanted to keep Silas from being unleashed on the world and was killed for standing in the way of Elena's plan for the cure. Every negative thing to happen in Mystic Falls was a chain reaction of his death.
  • Plot Device: Kol only returned to Mystic Falls so Elena and Jeremy could kill him, completing Jeremy's mark, hence putting the cure plotline in full swing.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Despite being over 1,000 years old, Kol still acts like a teenager and physically is one.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Kol is known for his signature smirk. Rebekah even said when seeing Kol in a different body that she "would know that smirk anywhere."
  • Really 700 Years Old: Like his siblings, Kol was born in the 10th century, making him over a thousand years old.
  • Remember the New Guy?: In the flashbacks of the Mikaelsons as humans, Kol was there, but never appeared on screen.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: A trait shared with his father and older brothers.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Mainly with Klaus and Rebekah.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: A trait shared with his brother Elijah.
  • The Unfavorite: Kol believed that his mother (and the rest of his family) didn't care whether he lived or died.
  • Wild Card: Kol is known as the "Wily Troublemaker" due to his unpredictable nature and his willingness to do whatever it takes to get what he wants.

Hybrids (formerly Werewolves)

    Hayley Marshall-Kenner

Hayley Marshall/Andrea Labonair
"First, I'm going to kick your ass. Then, I'm going to take my pack back."
Played By: Phoebe Tonkin

Hayley: "I have been attacked by French Quarter vampires, I've had to live in a house with a secret dungeon full of coffins, and I was nearly murdered by witches who are convinced that my baby is Lucifer."

She was born as Andrea Labonair in New Orleans into one of the two ruling families of the Crescent Wolf Clan, but her mother and father were killed shortly after her birth. She was adopted by a human family, but they kicked her out after her first kill and transformation on a full moon. She also has a child with Klaus Mikaelson, named Hope.

  • Action Girl: It comes with being a werewolf, and it's been taken Up to Eleven since she became a Hybrid. She's immensely powerful, and skilled as opposed to merely strong.
  • Almost Kiss: Between her and Elijah, and her and Jackson.
  • Arranged Marriage: Had her family not been slaughtered and displaced, she would have ended up as Jackson's wife in a political marriage between the two packs. In season two, she decides to marry Jackson in the hopes that their union will give the rest of the pack her hybrid ability to turn into a werewolf at will, thereby freeing them from Esther's control.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: To Elijah before she leaves with Klaus
  • Back from the Dead: Monique kills her right after she gives birth to Hope. However, she wakes up in transition as the baby's blood was still in her system. As at the season finale, she's become a hybrid.
  • Baleful Polymorph: Klaus has Dahlia place the Crescent Curse on her and her pack, which prevents them from leaving werewolf form unless there's a full moon. Davina temporarily suspends the curse, at a price.
  • Battle Couple: With Jackson, when they have to be. Also Klaus and Elijah.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Klaus, which lead to her pregnancy.
  • Blessed with Suck: She was cursed with lycanthropy and vampirism, making her twice cursed as a Hybrid monster.
  • But I Can't Be Pregnant!: After and she and Klaus sleep together, she discovers that she was knocked up, despite thinking Klaus was infertile. It turned that because Klaus was part werewolf, he could still breed.
  • Came Back Strong: After being killed by Monique, she comes back as a Hybrid, thus being one of the most powerful creatures on the face of the planet. However, with the exception of Klaus who is an original, Hybrids aren't much more powerful than Vampires, they merely have human form-werewolf strength on top of their Vampire strength which gets enhanced with anger or a full moon, but they benefit from an immunity to stakes, sunlight and werewolf venom. So while they do have an advantage, older vampires can still fight them fairly well and win so long as they don't get bitten. That said, if a hybrid transforms into their wolf form, they would be nearly as strong as an original due to having access to the full power of their werewolf side.
  • Casting Gag: Phoebe Tonkin and Claire Holt (Rebekah) were both main characters in H2O: Just Add Water.
  • Color-Coded Eyes: Hayley's eye colour. She has shown that at times, she can be somewhat of a jealous and envious personality.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Hayley often has a few one liners like this.
  • Emotion Suppression: After losing her child Hayley hides her grief.
  • Fake American: Played by Australian actress Phoebe Tonkin
  • Fetus Terrible: She was worried about this possibility, but it's ultimately averted.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: The blood of her baby heals her from any wounds she gets.
  • Happily Adopted: At least, until her adoptive parents found out about her werewolf side.
  • Heroic BSoD: Hayley has one when she discovers that she's pregnant.
  • Hot-Blooded: Hayley is passionate, spunky and opinionated. Comes with being a werewolf.
  • The Leader: Hayley is the alpha of her pack it's unknown if Hayley is still the alpha after she has left New Orleans
  • The Lad-ette: Hayley is still very feminine, but she has some strong tomboyish tendencies.
  • Last of Her Kind: She's the last direct descendant of the Labonair wolf clan, and as of season three is heavily implied to be one of the last few remnants of her pack after Lucien's near massacre in the bayou.
  • Mama Wolf: Hayley loves her daughter more than anything, and she will fight tooth and nail to protect her.
  • Morality Pet: On-again, off-again for Klaus. It's played straighter with Elijah.
  • One of the Boys: Hayley seems to prefer the company of the opposite sex and doesn't seem to get on all that well with other girls.
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: Almost every other sentence is said in her natural Australian accent.
  • Parental Abandonment: Both of her parents are deceased and her adoptive ones kicked her out when she first turned.
  • Secret Legacy: Hayley finds her family book which reveals she is the last of her line. Jackson also reveals that they were engaged to be married to unify their packs and rule together.
  • The Runaway: Hayley's adoptive parents kicked her out of their house when she was younger after she had turned into a werewolf and wreaked havoc. She has been on her own ever since, joining different werewolf packs.
  • Tomboy: Although she's certainly feminine, she has aspects of tomboyism that makes her seek out males for company.

     Marcel Gerard

Marcellus "Marcel" Gerard
"There’s a big difference between wanting to fight and knowing how to win."
Played By: Charles Michael Davis & Mc-Carrie Mc-Causland

Marcel: "Guess I'm what you call a necessary evil."

The former ruler of all supernatural life in New Orleans. Took over the city while Klaus and his siblings were run out of Town by their father over one hundred years ago. He is charming, intelligent, ruthless, and cunning. He was turned by Klaus back in the day, however he spent over a decade under Klaus' house as his adopted son. Unsurprisingly, this makes their current relationship a touch complex.Currently exiled from the home he used to rule. Marcel now focuses on recreating the community he lost and protecting those he loves. He enlisted both Gia and Josh as his new lieutenants. At the end of Season Three, Marcel takes a serum that changes him into a new type of Vampire that is stronger then multiple Originals with the ability to kill them at will, effectively becoming the most powerful Vampire in existence.

  • Affably Evil: He can be charming, giving, and an all round fun guy. As long as everything runs smoothly and nobody forgets who's in charge... if so this can lead to his Berserk Button.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Pledged his allegiance and surrendered his kingdom to Klaus after his disastrous attempt at capturing and imprisoning Klaus.
  • Ambiguously Evil: While his methods are brutal and he shows little mercy towards his enemies, Marcel could be considered this as his enemies, the witches, sacrifice children and his relationship with the human population is fairly reasonable (though sometimes strained). He has since revealed to be a moral vampire who uses ruthless methods from time to time.
  • Anti-Villain: Type I; Marcel is ruthless and willing to resort to extremely violent means to accomplish his goals, but he mentions he has limits. He won't feed on children, and compared to the witches he could be considered the lesser of two evils.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Rebekah.
  • Benevolent Boss: The vampires in town are quite loyal towards him, and Marcel views his inner circle as family. He displays some affection even towards the nightwalkers (vampires not in the inner circle) by allowing them parties to blow off steam. He showed willingness to allow Thierry to continue his relationship with a witch, and only imprisoned him in the Garden when Klaus manipulated the situation to appear as if Thierry was planning on betraying Marcel. In 1X08 Marcel's leadership qualities are displayed next to Klaus' for full effect. While Klaus threatens to torture his enemies for eternity, Marcel calmly tells his followers that he'll understand if they switch sides.
  • Berserk Button: Challenge him, and by extension his rule, and you get to see the less charming side. Also, like his mentor, and father figure Klaus, he takes disloyalty extremely personally. Kol learns this the hard way.
    • Hurting Davina in any way. She is the closest thing he has to a daughter, and he is willing to give up anything for her including his Kingdom. Hurting her is the easiest way to a painful end. In fact, it was Elijah and Freya's betrayal of her, leading to her fate worse than death that finally motivated him to take action against the Mikaelsons.
    • Children to him are the line that must never be crossed with him. He broke the peace they had with Witches back in season one to prevent innocent girls being sacrificed. He also made Hayley and Hope off limits during their exile despite Klaus' numerous enemies wanting to go after them.
  • Big Bad: Was set up to appear as this for The Originals. Though as the episodes pass and the Black and Gray Morality show, this trope seems to be muddled somewhat. The competition that Klaus ends up bringing doesn't help. It is then revealed he was Good All Along and has remained one of the more moral vampires thus far.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Is fiercely protective of Davina and will risk anything to for her, be it his Kingdom or his own life.
    • In season two, after Davina reveals that she is being attacked by a Witch who is attempting to usurp her position as Queen Witch, Marcel doesn't hesitate to offer to kill the Witch in question, even offering advice on how to handle the situation.
    • In season three he is fiercely protective of Hope, technically his half sister.
  • Bothering by the Book: When he figures out that Josh is working for Klaus under compulsion his first instinct is to kill him, then he notes that would be breaking his own rules. However he does come up with a better better plan instead...
  • The Charmer: While he does seek a solid relationship with Rebekah, technically speaking he has managed to have sexual relations with Sophia, Celeste, and Camille.
  • The Determinator: Is a survivor and a fighter, traits that Klaus saw in himself.
  • Devil in Plain Sight: Quite literally in regards to the Original vampires, but subverted when it is shown that he has a fairly decent arrangement with the humans of the Quarter.
  • Enemy Mine: With Father Kieran. Though Kieran doesn't particularly like Marcel, he once came to him for help when the witches were planning on slaughtering four girls for the Harvest ceremony. Despite the strained relationship, Marcel actually thinks of Kieran as a friend.
    • His ongoing relationship with the Mikaelsons tends to go like this. One moment they are plotting against each other, the next a mutual interest or common enemy leads them to working with one another.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He won't feed on children and he is openly disgusted by the witches' plans to slaughter their daughters to gain more power. It then turns out, he isn't evil at all and is one the more moral vampires of the show.
    • Also, he doesn't believe in wholesale slaughter of innocents no matter how hungry you are. Because even immortals have to live by a code...
  • A Father to His Men: Considers himself this to his soldiers. Made more evident when his soldiers turned down Klaus offer to switch sides. Also made evident when he decided to bend his knee in surrender rather than go down fighting, in order to save his outmatched soldiers.
  • Good All Along: Played straight and subverted; Marcel wants to control the witches and prevent them from doing magic because they were willing to sacrifice four teenage girls (and did successfully sacrifice three) as well as hexing a young man to go on a killing spree. Marcel is obviously disgusted by the act, and this disgust at what they did certainly played a role in his rescue of Davina and the restrictions on witchcraft.
    • He has shown more traits to show that he is this. So far it's mostly played straight, he was not willing to feed on the innocent or allow his vampires to do so when they were all extremely starving, and he absolutely refused to feed on his own men back in WW1.
  • The Good King: Tends to be fair, if stern. And is willing to swallow his pride and swear his loyalty to Klaus, in order to stop the slaughter of his people.
  • Has a Type: Blondes, possible due to his first love Rebekah.
  • Hero Antagonist: While 'hero' is a bit of a stretch, it's not hard to imagine how Marcel could be seen as a more heroic figure than Klaus or the witches. From Marcel's point of view, he's a vampire king with loyal followers who he treats like extended family, an adopted daughter he loves and saved, running a city in a fairly legitimate (for a vampire) fashion that doesn't clearly disadvantage the humans. His rivals are the witches who are willing to sacrifice teenage girls for power and his sire and father-figure Klaus, who is sadistic, volatile and prefers to rule by fear rather than respect. Marcel has never turned off his switch or gone on a killing rampage for fun.
  • Heroic Willpower: Starving and driven half mad from a Werewolf bite, Marcel manages to control himself enough to both save Kol, as well as prevent a human massacre with a mixture of raw will and charisma.
  • I Control My Minions Through...: Loyalty, apparently. Most of them respect Marcel and the city he has maintained and/or love him because he saved their lives (like Thierry).
  • I Choose to Stay: When Rebekah decides to leave town. Marcel, despite being Exiled and losing his power base, decides to stay to fight for his home.
  • I Hate You, Vampire Dad: Zig-zagged with Klaus. Though he expresses some resentment with his father-figure he also appears to genuinely care for him.
  • Knight in Shining Armor/The Champion: Towards Davina, after he rescued her from the witches. This is even lampshaded by Klaus.
  • Like a Son to Me: Marcel was this to Klaus, and Marcel has his own "child" in Davina.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: In season 3 he becomes the same kind of hybrid as Lucien having werewolf venom that can kill an original.
  • Overprotective Dad: To Davina, though of course he has reasons to be considering all of the witches want to kill her.
  • Pet the Dog: Towards Davina, especially after he saved her from the witches. Also, towards Josh, though this isn't entirely out of altruism. Also towards Hayley, when he discovered alone after her parents were slaughtered, instead of claiming her as a bargaining chip against the Werewolves, he attempted to send her away to safety.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: While he is more than happy to organize a feeding frenzy to keep his Nightwalkers happy, he is practical enough to keep their meals alive and then heal, mindwipe, and release them. After all you can't keep feeding on tourists if they stop coming to town. Also, while he knows the Originals are a threat, he prefers to hold going against them unless he really has to, or he has an edge on them. It's also revealed that he has an (apparently fairly successful) arrangement with the humans of the French Quarter that allows him and his vampires to operate but also keeps the humans (relatively) safe.
  • Secret Test of Character: He secretly drinks the blood that will turn him into an Original Hybrid and acts like he is about to drink it in front of Klaus and Elijah to see whether or not they'll kill him. If they do, he will enact a plan to get them out of New Orleans. Of course, it is Elijah who kills him out of the fear that he will enact the prophecy on his family.
  • Super Strength: All vampires have super strength as part of their nature, but it usually depends on age as the older they get the stronger they become. Marcel is notable for being exceptionally strong for his age: he is barely two hundred years old, give or take and was able to very briefly dominate the fight between him and Klaus in the penultimate episode of season one. Marcel's punches were able to greatly stagger Klaus and make bleed, which along with a Pet the Dog moment, allows Marcel to save Josh from Klaus' bite.
    • His strength is first demonstrated against Klaus in episode 11 of season one where Klaus talks about sacrificing Davina. Marcel hears it and will have none of it, so he jumps from a balcony and punches Klaus so hard that he topples and almost floors him, were it not for Klaus' hand hitting the floor first.
    • Another show of Marcel's strength is when he faces Mikael to protect Cami, he unleashes a series of combos that drive Mikael back. Mikael however, being an Original stronger than Klaus, shrugs it off and effortlessly floors Marcel. Points for trying and for succeeding in keeping him busy until back up came.
    • In season three, he impresses an Elder vampire (at least six hundred years old) with his fighting spirit. She even compliments him before knocking him out.
    • At the end of season three Marcel has become the most powerful Vampire to ever walk the Earth, able to take on multiple Originals with ease, as well as kill them if need be.
  • The Power of Love: Marcel claims this is the reason his followers are so loyal to him despite Klaus' superior strength.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: To Klaus, after Marcel is forced to turn over his kingdom to the hybrid. Marcel says that Klaus will never have the loyal followers Marcel does, because Klaus tries to force love out of people. Marcel adds that while Klaus taught him many things, he had to figure out for himself that loyalty is both respect and love, because Klaus himself has never understood this.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Generally, yes. He's a competent and approachable leader, and though he's strict about his rules his subjects seem exceptionally loyal to him.
  • The Men First: Shown when he bowed to Klaus rather than lose any more of his people. Also in WW1 when looking after the soldiers in his battalion.
  • Vampire Monarch: An assumed position (Marcel took the reigns after the Originals fled the Quarter), but his rule is stable and his followers are loyal.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: Marcel has a soft spot for children, and would never hurt them.

    Vincent Griffith

Vincent Griffith
"That's just it, what do I say? Am I just supposed to feel bad for these people that I hurt? Am I supposed to feel guilty for this."
Played By: Yusef Gatewood

Vincent: "Is that what you think heartache feels like, Eva? Oh, but you have no idea. I wanted to rip my own heart out every time I woke so I couldn't feel what you did to me! That bone-deep hurt, knowing that I could not save them kids from you. The woman I loved more than my own life."

A Treme witch who was possessed by Finn Mikaelson. Vincent is a retired witch who was said to be equal in power to Eva Sinclair, who turned out to be his wife

  • The Confidant: He and Cami are that to each other.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Has a keen dry wit when dealing with the supernatural dramatics he finds himself caught up in, usually against his will.
  • Grand Theft Me: He's horrified to discover what Finn had been up to in his body after getting it back.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Vincent is one of the more powerful and formidable witches in his Coven, able to go toe to toe with an Original. However his finding out that the love of his life Eva Sinclair was killing innocent people, and planning to sacrifice children led him becoming disillusioned and quitting witchcraft in general. Being forced to bring her in himself didn't help any.
  • Living MacGuffin: The French Quarter witches demand his return to lift their vendetta against the witch that Rebekah is currently inhabiting.
  • The Mentor: Is this for Davina during the last episodes of season two.
  • Only Sane Man: While a majority of the witches spend their time focusing on themselves and their cold war with the vampires and werewolves, Vincent actively works with the police to head off any supernatural threat that could threaten both humans and witches. He is also aware of the power games the witches play amongst themselves and stays very far away from them.
  • Refusal of the Call: He's extremely reluctant to lead the covens after forcing Davina into exile. He only changes his mind after Marcel calls him out.
  • The Shrink: Is actually a qualified psychologist.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: Nine months prior he retired from the Treme Coven, choosing to avoid the Supernatural elements in New Orleans altogether, something he recommends to Cami. May or may not be connected to his wife going on a killing spree.

Former Main Characters

    Sophie Deveraux

Sophie Deveraux
"I have nothing to lose."
Played By: Daniella Pineda

Sophie: "I lost my faith. Then I realized that if I didn't believe, I would be letting you down. I tried to get it back. I tried."

One of the more prominent witches in New Orleans. In the past, she was a light-hearted girl who enjoyed partying and didn't care much for witchcraft. However, 8 months before the start of the series, she watched her niece, Monique Deveraux, die in The Harvest, a sacrificial ritual that allows the witches in New Orleans to draw power from their ancestors. After that, she became more serious, obsessed with the goal of killing Davina so she can complete the ritual and bring her niece back from the dead. Sophie has made it clear that she will do whatever it takes to reach her goal, which makes her dangerous to have as an enemy.

  • Ambiguously Bi: A flashback shows her drunkenly kissing a girl.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: She's killed by her own niece halfway through Season 1.
  • Evil All Along: Though in practice, she's just showing that this show is filled to the brim with Black and Gray Morality and Gray and Gray Morality. "Evil" is an extreme way to describe her. Her plan has been to kill Davina, but only to complete The Harvest, which she believed would return the sacrificed witches, including her niece. She's lied through her teeth that Marcel was a tyrant and that the witches were oppressed.
  • Hot-Blooded: Sophie is a pretty angry person.
  • It's Personal: While her actions are to free her people, she is also determined to make Marcel pay for killing her sister in the middle of the Old Quarter, though it may not be quite that simple.
  • My Greatest Failure: She didn't believe in the Harvest Ritual even though her sister, Jane-Anne did. Due to the events that happened, three girls died, including Monique, Jane-Anne's daughter, while Davina got away. If Davina doesn't die, then none of them will resurrect, meaning Jane-Anne sacrificed her daughter for nothing. It is to this end that the entire show's plot came to place. Jane-Anne gave her life so Sophie could find and kill Davina to bring back the sacrifices, including Monique, of whom is the reason Sophie is blaming herself for everything going wrong and the motivation for trying to fix it.
  • The Resistance: She represents the Witch's rebelling against Marcel, or so it seems, but it's really more complicated than that.
  • Took a Level in Badass: While originally a fun loving, partying borderline hippie who had a casual relationship with Marcel, she quickly became a highly competent witch who plays the Originals against Marcel in an almost fanatical single aim to hunt down and kill Davina. Due to her focus and determination, Elijah has labelled her one of the more dangerous players in the battle for New Orleans, because she is someone with nothing to lose.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: Sophie is a bit puzzled as to why Klaus just doesn't rip out Marcel's heart on the spot. It takes Rebekah to reveal that Marcel is the nearest thing Klaus has to a son.

    Cami O'Connell

Camille "Cami" O'Connell
"People are not awful. They want to be good. Something makes them bad, makes them snap."
Played By: Leah Pipes

Cami: "I didn't come here to appreciate art. If you want to talk about your progress as a person striving for empathy, fine. If not? I'll go."

A bartender and psychology student who begins the series with no knowledge of the supernatural world. She is drawn to Klaus and is the object of Marcel's affections. Smart, brave, and obsessed with the line between good and evil, she quickly becomes entrapped in the war between the vampires in New Orleans. Her motivation for finding out what makes a person good or evil and the primary reason she returns to New Orleans is to find out why her twin brother Sean went mad and slaughtered all the people in his choir and then himself, especially since Sean had no signs of mental breakdown or anything of the sort before it happened.

  • Action Survivor: She is the Token Human in the series and therefore, she does not possess any special powers or abilities, other than her intelligence and her brains. She could also be considered a Badass Bookworm. Despite being the only human in the series, she is still able to defend herself when she has to against all of the supernatural beings that surround her. Cami is pretty badass enough that she's even stood up to Klaus on plenty of occasions.
  • Adorkable: To an extent, when she starts into her psychobabble. She is also shown to be intelligent, offbeat, brainy and a nerd. She is constantly studying, reading and analyzing, which indicates that she is highly nerdy. Also shown that she is a bit of a Genki Girl and a Motor Mouth, especially once she gets hyped up or excited about something she is passionate about.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Her relationships with both Klaus and Marcel. Cami has shown an attraction to Marcel and has engaged in a sexual relationship with him. Cami also has a strong connection with Klaus and has shown that she is strongly attracted to him despite the fact that Klaus has continuously committed evil and immoral deeds. However, Camille has shown that she does bring out a much kinder and softer side of Klaus' personality and it could be argued that Cami is Klaus' humanity.
  • All-Loving Hero: Cami is always trying to see the good in everyone. She is kind, caring and compassionate. She has also shown that she has a soft spot for Klaus and cares about him, despite all the immoral and evil acts that he has committed. She constantly gives Klaus second and third and fourth chances and she believes that Klaus is not truly evil and that there is still goodness inside of him no matter how much he tries to run from it or hide it. She has extended and shown compassion towards Klaus and has been there for him in times of need and support. Cami is The Conscience and a Morality Pet for Klaus and Klaus always comes to Cami whenever he needs to have a heart to heart or needs to get something off of his chest. The fact that Cami has such qualities of over optimism and belief in someone like Klaus shows that she is very determined and refuses to give up on people when she believes deep down that they are capable of being good if they choose to do so. This does however result in Camille coming off as overly idealistic and naive.
  • Angsty Surviving Twin: Her twin brother Sean committed suicide (after committing genocide as well). Because of this, Cami has consistently angsted about her brother and his death and has come off as distant, icy and aloof at first. She later starts to mellow out and become much warmer once she starts to accept the tragedy that happened to her brother.
  • Badass Adorable: She has her moments. Cami is very loveable, kind and endearing. She is also extremely quirky, nerdy and offbeat but she has also proved to be an Action Survivor who is a bit of a badass and is more than capable of standing up for herself when she needs to be. She has even stood up to Klaus of all people and has put him in his place, meaning that Cami, when angered, is NOT to be underestimated by any means. Even though she is a mere human girl with no powers, she has shown that she is very brave.
  • Badass Bookworm: She's intelligent and scholarly. She is always shown to be studying, reading or analyzing. She often depends on her intelligence and her brains in order to achieve her goals instead of resorting to violence or force. Cami is shown that she is not physically imposing or intimidating. Despite being a bookworm and a nerd, she has shown that she is a very strong willed person and she can stand up for herself when she has to. She also has no superhuman abilities and is therefore subjected to using her brains, intellect and intelligence to achieve her goals and agenda.
  • Badass Normal: Cami is a Token Human within a series filled with supernatural beings yet she has shown that she is highly capable of defending herself and fighting for her own safety when she has to. Despite being a bit of a Damsel in Distress in the beginning and needing her supernatural male suitors to look out for her, protect her or save her from time to time, Cami has become significantly braver and more badass as the series has gone on. She goes from a Damsel in Distress to someone who is more of an Action Survivor who is capable of keeping up with the supernatural beings around her. Cami is not much of an Action Girl since she does not have abilities that allow her to defend herself during combat but she is more of a Badass Bookworm, using her brains and intelligence to solve problems and achieve her goals and agenda.
  • The Bartender: Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Camille is a bartender for a living, along with being a psychology student.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Klaus and Marcel. Cami has shown a sexual attraction to the both of them and she is drawn to both of them in different ways. Cami has had a sexual affair with Marcel (which caused Klaus to become jealous). Cami also seems to be Marcel's type physically, as she is blonde and beautiful (like Marcel's first love, Rebekah). Cami also has a strong connection with Klaus and there is an obvious spark between them. Klaus obvious deeply cares about Cami as he has gone out of his way to protect her as much as possible. Cami also has a tendency to bring out the much kinder and caring side of Klaus, something that Klaus does not show to often around many other people (other than Rebekah, Elijah, Stefan and Caroline). There is so much pent up sexual tension between Klaus and Cami that they have officially veered into the Will They or Won't They? territory.
  • Betty and Veronica: Cami is the Betty to Rebekah's Veronica for Marcel's Archie. Marcel was first in a relationship with Rebekah, as Rebekah was Marcel's First Love. Cami, on the other hand is extremely good friends with Marcel and was engaged in a sexual relationship with him and there are still unresolved feelings between the two. Marcel has Belligerent Sexual Tension with both Rebekah and Camille. Rebekah is the Alpha Bitch and Camille is the Nice Girl. There might also be a triangle shaping up between Camille, Klaus and Marcel with arguably Cami is the Archie to Marcel's Betty and Klaus' Veronica. Cami is very good friends with both men and has proven to be their Morality Pet. Cami has shown that she turns to Marcel in times of emotional comfort or support and Marcel does the same with her. Klaus has also shown that he has possibly deep (romantic) feelings for Cami as he is very protective of her and became angry when he discovered that Cami had slept with Marcel, going so far as to threaten to kill Marcel to Cami's face. It is unclear what the status of Klaus and Cami's relationship is but what is obvious is the Belligerent Sexual Tension between them, so much that they have gone into Will They or Won't They? territory.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Cami is a Nice Girl but don't piss her off. She will say exactly what is on her mind. She is normally a very understanding and compassionate person but if you so much as push her buttons, she will fight back and she will let you have it with words... and sometimes with a slap. Cami has told off Klaus numerous times and she has told him exactly what is on her mind. Cami's spunkiness and feistiness might be some of the reasons or qualities of why Klaus is drawn to her in the first place.
  • Bookworm: Camille loves to read. She almost always has her head in a book of some sorts. She is The Smart Girl and a Badass Bookworm, so it is understandable why she likes reading so much. It is from reading books that she gains and garners all the knowledge that allows her to spout of random facts about psychology and psychobabble. Understandable, considering she is a psych student.
  • Break the Cutie/Broken Bird: Despite Cami being optimistic, happy go lucky and naive and idealistic, there are times when she comes off as aloof and cynical. This is because she has a Dark and Troubled Past. At first, she comes off as emotionally detached and distant and she seems to have a habit of pushing others away. The reason for this is because her twin brother Sean had died, after which she was forever changed and she became severely depressed and hopeless. She never fully recovered from the loss. Despite this, Cami has also shown that she is very loving, kind, caring and compassionate towards other people and she has sympathized with others who have endured or experienced loss or gone through the process of grief themselves, such as Klaus for example. She has shown that she has empathy for Klaus as she learns to understand his troubles and his background and how he endured much suffering and abuse. Still, Cami does have moments of sadness and cynicism despite being the eternal optimist. Understandable considering the pain and heartache that she has gone through.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Camille is the Gentle Girl to Klaus' Brooding Boy.
  • Brutal Honesty: Wastes no time in telling Klaus exactly what she thinks of him, and never sugarcoats her opinion, even when being used by him as a compelled spy. When it comes to Klaus, she never hides the truth and she is extremely straightforward with him, sometimes to the point of excessive bluntness. However, Cami's bluntness and frankness with Klaus seems to have an effect on Klaus' personality and he does take what Cami says into account. Camille is very feisty and spunky and she is also very opinionated. For such a Nice Girl, she sure has a lot of spunk and fire inside of her. Camille is also capable of being incredibly sarcastic and snide.
  • Canon Foreigner: Camille is an original character who did not exist in the original series, The Vampire Diaries.
  • The Chick: The opposite of Rebekah, who is The Dark Chick. Cami represents the spiritual, the feminine and The Heart aspect of the series. She is also a Token Good Teammate out of a group of supernatural beings who are very immoral and morally grey. She may not be The Heroine of the story but she is the classic Girl Next Door and the Nice Girl who serves as a Morality Pet to both Klaus and Marcel, the two major male characters in the show. She has also shown that she is the mediator between Klaus and Marcel.
  • The Conscience: She is this for Klaus, along with The Heart and his Morality Pet. Cami is a moral touchstone for Klaus. She often reminds him of his immoral behaviour and about doing the right and wrong thing. If Klaus does something immoral or something that Cami does not agreed with, she will NOT hesitate to speak her mind, tell Klaus what she feels and put Klaus in his place with her words. Despite the fact that Cami has the potential to be rather blunt with Klaus, she has also shown that she is very compassionate and empathetic towards Klaus and his struggles. She has continuously gone out of her way to be there for him, befriend him and offer him emotional comfort and support. If it is not his brother Elijah that he turns to, it is almost always Cami that Klaus turns to during times of need and support. It is also very evident that Cami has a strong influence on Klaus and his actions and that she brings out a gentler and kinder side of his personality. Cami has shown that she is Klaus' humanity.
  • Constantly Curious: One of Cami's biggest flaws is the fact that she is always curious about everything. Sometimes her curiosity gets the best of her and it manages to get her into trouble. Cami has a habit of being too nosy at times and sticking her nose in things that she has no business sticking her nose into. It's understandable why Cami would want to find out everything, learn everything and analyze everything she ends up finding out, since she is a psychology major and making discoveries and analyzing those discoveries is part of her personality. Once she finds out something of importance or something that she is passionate about, she becomes quite The Determinator and she never gives up until she finds out the truth or meaning behind everything.
  • Cry Cute: Whenever Cami, who is a bit of a Tsundere, cries, she manages to still look beautiful while doing so. Because Cami still looks so pretty and beautiful while crying, the audience sympathizes with her even more. Add her highly tragic past and all of the grief, pain, loss and suffering that she endures, it is very hard to not sympathize with Cami when she cries.
  • Cute Bookworm: Cami is cute, nerdy, intelligent and brainy. She reads and studies a lot and she is also The Smart Girl. She always has her head in a book of some sorts, is always analyzing something or researching something, and she engages in psychobabble. Not to mention that she is also always ready to spout of facts about psychology. Comes with being a psych student.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Not that Camille is really physically clumsy per se, but she is a little clumsy in her mannerisms. Not to mention that her constant curiosity ends up getting herself into serious trouble. She is also energetic and a bit of a Genki Girl who has a classic case of Motor Mouth and when she starts talking, she can't stop which sometimes leads her to say things that she really should not be saying. And sometimes she says things at the wrong time, which leads to even more trouble.
  • The Cutie: Cami is very loveable and endearing. She has been through so much tragedy that she is pretty much a broken soul and everyone that she loved and cared about has died on her. Despite this, Camille still finds the strength and the will to fight and to keep going no matter what. She still retains her optimism and her ability to see the good in situations and the good in other people. Her relationship and her interactions with Klaus are very tender and heartwarming and she is seen to bring out the much warmer and kinder side of Klaus' personality. That, in itself, makes Cami loveable.
  • Damsel in Distress: Since Cami is the Token Human who has no superhuman abilities, she often requires saving from time to time, mostly by Klaus or Marcel.
  • Damsel out of Distress: As the series progresses, Cami has shown that even though she is not an Action Girl, she is more of an Action Survivor, using her brains and intelligence to survive amidst a world of supernatural beings and circumstances. She is also capable of keeping her cool and she is good under pressure.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Part of the reason why she came off so aloof at first was because she had suffered great loss and tragedy. Her twin brother Sean had committed genocide when he killed his fellow seminary students and then committed suicide, all because he was being hexed by a witch. A witch named Agnes had put a hex on him for revenge to get back at his Uncle Kieran for telling off the witches. As a result of being hexed by Agnes, Sean slowly started go crazy. What is sad about the entire thing was that Sean was innocent in all of this and was hexed because of something he didn't even do. As a result, he ended up slaughtering innocents and taking his own life. And Camille lost a family member in the process. It is no wonder that Cami came off so distant when the show first began, as she had suffered the trauma of losing the brother that she loved so much.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Cami can be very sarcastic and snide, especially when she is angered or irritated. She also throws in an occasional witty line or two. Most of her sarcasm and snide comments and remarks often come in handy whenever she is interacting with Klaus. This often results in Snark-to-Snark Combat or Slap-Slap-Kiss between the two of them. The sarcastic and snide comments between Klaus and Camille are also a result of the Belligerent Sexual Tension between the two of them as well.
  • Defrosting the Ice Queen: Originally, Cami starts off as distant, aloof and withdrawn. She's not mean or anything, but she is a little standoffish due to various events in her past. When your twin brother commits mass genocide by slaughtering a bunch of innocent people for unexplained reasons and then commits suicide by killing himself afterwards, it's understandable why you don't want to get close to anyone or even open up about your issues. Despite this, eventually, Camille starts to open up more about her problems and her dark past and in doing so, she becomes much warmer and reveals the kind, compassionate and caring person that was hidden underneath her standoffish facade.
  • The Determinator: Even Klaus says that Camille's tenacity is one of the things he loves most about Camille.
  • Distaff Counterpart: Cami is basically the female version of Matt Donovan (from The Vampire Diaries). Both Cami and Matt are Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold and have Innocent Blue Eyes. Both Cami and Matt are the Token Human of their respective series. Matt is the classic Nice Guy and Cami is the classic Nice Girl. Matt is the Boy Next Door and Cami is the Girl Next Door. Both Cami and Matt also like to see the good in everyone as much as possible.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Hates being called Camille and prefers to be called Cami instead, as she feels that her name is a "grandma's name". Everyone in the show seems to call her Cami.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: In regards to both Klaus and Marcel. Cami is seen checking out both Marcel and Klaus and she has an obvious physical and sexual attraction to both of them, although she has never outright said it. She has shown that she is drawn to both men and she has even engaged in a sexual relationship with Marcel, much to Klaus' dismay. Honestly, who can blame Cami for gawking at them or checking them both out? Just look at the two of them.
  • Everyone Loves Blondes: Camille is beautiful, blonde and intelligent. And she seems to have captured the attention (and the hearts) of both Marcel and Klaus. She seems to be a target for the affections of both Klaus and Marcel because both of them have a type, as both Klaus and Marcel have a tendency to show fondness and have a thing for blond haired girls with blue eyes. Klaus seems to have a preference for girls or women who show a physical resemblance to his sister Rebekah, such as his infatuation with Caroline. Marcel also has a preference for blondes because his First Love Rebekah was a blonde. Despite the fact that Cami is a blonde, she is more of the Girl Next Door type and not the sexy Femme Fatale type of blonde. Despite this, she still has the attention of the two major male characters in the show. Cami also breaks the stereotype of being blonde and being The Ditz, Book Dumb, the Dumb Blonde and the Brainless Beauty, since she is none of those things and is instead, a blonde and The Smart Girl, a Badass Bookworm and Nerds Are Sexy all rolled into one.
  • Expy: Of Caroline Forbes. Both are blonde haired and blue eyed, although Camille is more of The Smart Girl while Caroline is more of The Ditz and the Dumb Blonde. Camille is also more of the Nice Girl and Caroline is more of the Lovable Alpha Bitch. Both Cami and Caroline are passionate, outspoken, spunky and both stand up to Klaus and call him out on his behaviour. Both Camille and Caroline are also a Morality Pet to Klaus and they both bring out Klaus' much kinder side and bring out his humanity. Both Camille and Caroline are also incredibly idealistic and naive from time to time. Also, the only major difference between Camille and Caroline is that Cami is a human while Caroline is a vampire, although like Cami, Caroline also originally started out as a naive, gullible and idealistic human girl.
  • Foil/Good Counterpart: To Rebekah. Both are blonde, smart, spunky and passionate. However, Cami is a Nice Girl while Rebekah is an Alpha Bitch. Camille is also a human while Rebekah is an Original vampire. Camille is more of The Heroine or Anti-Hero archetype while Rebekah is more of an Anti-Villain archetype. Camille is more kind, caring, compassionate and understanding while Rebekah is more immoral, cold, bitchy and ruthless. Both Cami and Rebekah seem to have a strong love of family and will do anything and everything to protect them. Camille is more of a nerdy girl who loves reading and studying and Rebekah is more of a ditzy girl who loves fashion and chasing the opposite sex. Both have shown an interest and attraction to Marcel and both have engaged in a sexual relationship with him. Both have a love hate relationship with Klaus, although both Cami and Rebekah also manage to serve as Morality Pets for Klaus and bring out the much kinder and softer side of Klaus' personality. Klaus has also shown that he is extremely jealous and possessive over both Cami and Rebekah.
  • Freudian Trio: Cami is the Ego (the balance, the mediator, The Chick, The Heart) to Klaus' Id (emotional, hotheaded, passionate, Blood Knight) and Marcel's Superego (manipulative, calm, cool, The Stoic).
  • Genki Girl: Cami is rather high energy and loves talking, especially when she gets excited. She also has a classic case of Motor Mouth and when she gets excited, she seems to get overhyped to the point where she becomes full of so much energy that she might exhaust others around her.
  • Girl Next Door: Cami is a classic Nice Girl who is the Token Human of the series. She is also the casual blonde girl whom everyone would want to befriend.
  • Go-Getter Girl: Camille is very intelligent, scholarly and academic. She is a psychology student and she is the type to be ambitious and work hard. She devotes her time and effort into her studies and into things that she deems interesting. It could be because she herself has gone through much tragedy and trauma and because of this, she turns to focusing on her goals, dreams and aspirations in the form of studying and analyzing. Another reason Camille seems to be so focused on her academics and why she chose the field of psychology in particular is because she herself wonders about her own mind and her own psychosis. Although she is The Smart Girl and a Badass Bookworm who works hard at what she does, her passion for psychology is more than just about getting straight A's. Her passion for psychology could have a lot to do with wanting to conquer her own demons and learn about other people's demons as well. Camille has also shown that her love life takes a back seat to her studies and her education. However, Camille has shown that when she does find herself attracted to someone, they are most likely of a higher status, complex and very smart and intelligent (like Klaus and Marcel).
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Cami is blonde haired along with having Innocent Blue Eyes. Personality wise, she has consistently proven that she is a very compassionate, kind, caring and empathetic character who believes nobody is innately evil. She is clearly a very innocent spirit and she is also woefully naive and gullible. She is the classic Nice Girl and Damsel in Distress combined with Beauty = Goodness, The Heart, All-Loving Hero, The Ingenue, and Incorruptible Pure Pureness. Aside from being a compassionate and noble individual, Cami has also shown that she is very wholesome, sweet and modest. She also represents the human aspect of the series as she is the sole human character. However, even if she is the ultimate sweet and nice girl of the series, DO NOT push her buttons or provoke her for she can veer into Beware the Nice Ones territory. Even though Cami is generally nice and polite, she does not take crap from anyone, especially Klaus.
  • The Heart: Camille is the Token Human of the series and therefore, represents the human aspect of the story. Although it could be argued that Cami shares the role of The Chick with Hayley, Cami is definitely the moral and human aspect of the story as she is a much more moral character than Hayley, who is more of an Anti-Hero that is morally grey. Cami is a compassionate, kind, caring and loving person who always tries to see the good side everyone, including the likes of a sociopathic and immoral character like Klaus. Camille constantly reminds Klaus and Marcel that there is more to life than personal vendettas and personal agendas that only benefit themselves instead of others. She also serves as a Morality Pet for both Marcel and Klaus and she brings out the softer side of their personalities. She also serves as The Conscience to Klaus, reminding him of his bad behaviour and about doing the wrong thing. She often advises him to think before he acts and gives him advice on how to approach things from a more diplomatic point of view instead of resorting to violence.
  • The Idealist: Camille is somewhat idealistic and naive by nature. She refuses to believe that there is pure evil in the world. Cami is the type of individual who believes that Humans Are Good and that supernatural beings also have the potential to be good if they try. Cami also tries to see the good in everyone, even if they don't deserve it, and she has shown that she is very naive when it comes to Klaus, even though she has called him out on his immoral behaviour plenty of times. She is also the Plucky Girl who is very optimistic and happy go lucky, despite the tragedy that she has gone through. Cami believes that no matter how evil someone may seem or how many immoral acts one commits, they are still capable of doing something good if they choose to do so.
  • The Ingenue: Cami has a very innocent, pure and naive quality about her. Probably because she is so idealistic and optimistic about life. She is woefully naive which make her an easy target for danger and for villainous characters, such as Marcel and Klaus, to take advantage of her. Not to mention that Cami is also the classic Token Human who is a Damsel in Distress and needs constant saving from her supernatural male suitors in Klaus and Marcel. Cami is also a blonde who is a Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold with Innocent Blue Eyes, which also adds to her innocence and purity. Personality wise, she has shown to be a noble, compassionate, caring and empathetic character who has managed to show kindness to villains like Klaus. She is also The Cutie, someone who is very loveable and endearing and The Pollyanna and the Plucky Girl, someone who has endured a lot of pain, suffering and tragedy yet has remained hopeful and optimistic regardless.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: To match her Hair of Gold. Her eyes are very clear, innocent and honest, indicating a kind, noble, caring and compassionate person.
  • Interspecies Friendship: With Klaus. Camille is a human while Klaus is an Original Hybrid.
  • In-Series Nickname: Camille is often called Cami.
  • Killed Off for Real: She is bit by Lucien and eventually dies from the incurable werewolf venom.
  • Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: Cami is the Light Feminine to Rebekah's Dark Feminine. While Cami is a kind, compassionate, sensitive and empathetic person, Rebekah has shown that she is much more cold, icy, ruthless and immoral in nature.
  • Morality Chain: Seems to be this for BOTH Marcel and Klaus. Cami has been shown to bring out the kinder side of the much more violent and hot headed personalities of both Marcel and Klaus.
  • Morality Pet: For both Klaus and Marcel. She has shown that she brings out the humanity in both of them and that she has a strong impact on Klaus' personality. Cami brings out Klaus' humanity.
  • Motor Mouth: Sometimes when Camille gets going, she can't stop. Especially when it is something that she is either worried about, anxious about, passionate about or excited about. Cami will also go into her rants about psychobabble or she will also tend to keep talking when she is telling off Klaus for his behaviour. She is very similar to Caroline in this aspect.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Cami is blonde, intelligent, very beautiful and physically appealing. Although not the busty blonde type, she is more of the Nice Girl, The Cutie, and Nerds Are Sexy all rolled into one.
  • Muggle Best Friend: Could be considered this to Klaus. Klaus is a very powerful Original Hybrid (who is half vampire and half werewolf) who has superhuman abilities and Camille is a regular human girl who has no superhuman abilities.
  • Naïve Everygirl: Cami has shown that she is highly naive and idealistic in nature especially during the beginning. At the start, she believed that nobody was truly or purely evil in the world and that everybody was capable of goodness. She starts to become much more pragmatic as the series progresses because of everything that she has been through.
  • Nerds Are Sexy: Camille is very beautiful and she is also a Bookworm and a Badass Bookworm all rolled into one. She is a psychology major sand she also studies and reads a lot, indicating a highly nerdy and scholarly personality. Despite the fact that she is The Smart Girl who is a nerd, she is also appealing as she has managed to attract the attention of and gain the affections of both Marcel and Klaus. Klaus has also shown that it is Cami's mind and intelligence that he is strongly attracted to as well as her tenacity and her spirit.
  • Nice Girl: The nicest girl in the series. She is also the Token Human and The Heart of the show. Cami is kind, caring, emotional and compassionate. She manages to try to see the good in Klaus, someone who has consistently shown to commit endless immoral and evil acts. Cami also serves as a Morality Pet for Klaus, as she has been seen to bring out the much softer and kinder side of Klaus.
  • Non-Action Guy: Cami is shown to not be much into fighting or combat. She depends on her intelligence and her brains to survive. She would also rather resort to using diplomatic tactics and ways in order to achieve her goal instead of resorting to violence of any sort. She seems to be the opposite of Klaus in this aspect, who frequently uses combat, violence or force to achieve his mission or goals.
  • Only Sane Woman: Out of all of the characters in the series and as the only Token Human, it is understandable why Cami would be considered the most sane and rational out of all of the characters. She is also practical and intelligent as well and depends on her brains in order to survive.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Klaus. Despite originally being "against" Klaus because of his bad behaviour and the horrible things he has done, Cami has proven to have become a very good and reliable friend to Klaus. She is always there for him whenever he needs to talk or whether he needs come kind of comfort, advice or support. When Klaus feels like he has nowhere or no one else to go to, he shows that he trusts Cami and turns to her when he really needs to. Cami has been shown to be a good listener and although she's initially untrusting and skeptical of Klaus because of what and who he is and is reluctant to get closer to him, once Klaus opened up her eyes and exposed to her his dark past which was filled with pain and dysfunction, Cami began to see Klaus in a different light and began to understand where Klaus was coming from and why he managed to turn out the way that he did. In some ways, Cami has become somewhat of a therapist for Klaus, someone whom Klaus can come to and turn to whenever he needs toy get something off his chest. Cami also serves as The Conscience and a Morality Pet for Klaus, someone who calls him out on his immoral behaviour and reminds him of when he is doing something wrong or when he has crossed the moral line. However, it seems as though Klaus and Cami are platonic and are friends, there might be some mutual romantic feelings between the two of them as Klaus has shown that he has a very big soft spot for Cami and he got very jealous and upset when he discovered that Cami had engaged in a sexual relationship with his enemy Marcel. Cami, on the other hand, has always been drawn to Klaus on some level deep down, despite the fact that she tries to hide it and deny it. Stops being platonic in season 3.
  • Plucky Girl: Despite all of the pain and tragedy that she is endured, she has managed to still think as positively as she can. She is also shown to be someone who is rather naive, idealistic and optimistic. She's strong, passionate, enthusiastic and opinionated and never hesitates to speak her mind and stand up for what she believes in. She also has no problem in standing up to Klaus and telling him when he is in the wrong.
  • The Pollyanna: Camille is strong willed and optimistic, despite all of the pain, tragedy and suffering that she has endured.
  • The Renfield: For Klaus, after he brainwashed her to get close to Marcel. However, she only remembers this brainwashing in Klaus' presence.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Camille is the Energetic Girl to Klaus and Marcel's Savvy Guy. Cami is a Genki Girl and a Motor Mouth who has a somewhat enthusiastic and optimistic personality while both Klaus and Marcel, by contrast, are Manipulative Bastards and Cultured Badasses that are more sophisticated and have more serious and stoic personalities.
  • Ship Tease: With both Klaus and Marcel. She has actually engaged in a sexual relationship with Marcel. However, there is a lot of Belligerent Sexual Tension with Klaus that they have started to veer in the Will They or Won't They? territory.
  • The Smart Girl: A combo of Nerds Are Sexy and Badass Bookworm. Cami is very intelligent, smart, savvy and nerdy. She is always reading and studying and she has shown that she is highly mentally capable and a book smart genius. Her focus tends to be primarily on intellectual and intelligent pursuits. She also seems to be a Techno Wizard as she is always using her laptop for research and studying. Cami is primarily the idea girl who comes up with plans that are more diplomatic in nature while she leaves the action and the use of violence and force to other characters, primarily the supernatural beings. Cami is also a psychology student.
  • Techno Wizard: Cami is pretty savvy with a computer or a laptop and she almost always has one for studying and researching.
  • Token Good Teammate: For both Klaus and Marcel, tying into her status as a Morality Pet for both of them.
  • Token Human: She's the only regular human on the main cast. Every other main character on the show is a supernatural being, whether they be a vampire, witch, hybrid or werewolf.
    • Halfway through season three, she's compelled by Aurora to kill herself. She completes the transition into a vampire before the episode is done.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Was already on her way to being tough but becoming a vampire herself has unleashed her inner awesomeness big time.
  • Troubled, but Cute: Cami is very beautiful and loveable, but she has been through so much pain and suffering that it is understandable why she comes off as so troubled.
  • Tsundere: Type B towards Klaus.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: By far the most naive and idealistic character in the series. Comes with being the Token Human, the Plucky Girl and The Pollyanna all rolled into one.
  • Will They or Won't They?: With BOTH Klaus and Marcel. In Marcel's case, They Do. It is They Do with Klaus in season 3.

    Davina Claire

Davina Claire
"I want to make them pay."
Played By: Danielle Campbell

Davina: "You think I'm normal? I'm a 16 year old witch living in a church attic like some kind of freak."

At the beginning, a sixteen year old witch Now 19 with a dark side. She's still learning the full extent of her powers and has Marcel as her protector. Davina is in hiding from the witches of the Quarter as they would want to kill her to complete The Harvest. In the meantime, her powers are too much for her to handle and can result a disaster, if they were to get out of control.

  • Abusive Parents: Her mother was willing to let her be sacrificed for their own power, under the belief that they'd all resurrect afterward, although no one knows for sure if that last part is true.
  • Accidental Public Confession: How Vincent tricks her into revealing her part in the massacre of the Ninth Ward witches.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Becomes Regent of the New Orleans covens by the end of season two.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Helping Marcel suppress the witches in season one - and her continued support/sympathy to both Marcel and the Originals in season two - has left her with no allies in her own community. Even as Regent, she has to be careful if she so much as speaks to Marcel, in case she's labelled a traitor. Becomes even worse when she's shunned.
  • Back from the Dead: She's killed by Sophie for the Harvest, but thanks to Marcel, she's resurrected.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Davina is a very sweet and considerate girl with a caring nature, but cross her or her friends and you will absolutely regret it.
  • Berserk Button: Davina really hates it when someone lies and manipulates her, because this is what the witches did to her by not telling her that their plan was to sacrifice her life in the Harvest. This is also part of the reason she hates and distrusts the Mikaelsons who have all lied and manipulated her to meet their goals. The first one being Elijah who promised her his mother's spell book but only gives her a few pages and his original plan was to only have her learn a few spells so that she could use a spell that would break the spell that linked Haley to Sophie, but they are able to convince Sophie to do it herself. Also, Elijah was using exact words to postpone giving her the whole book and even then, it is not clear if he was ever going to give it to her at all or he was going to but was sidetracked by everything going on at the time. Either way he gets punished for his dishonesty by Davina causing him to choke on his own blood.
  • The Chosen One: Davina is the key to the Harvest, a ritual that will ensure the witches reconnect with their ancestors' spirits and will thereby enhance their powers. However, Davina has to die for the Harvest to be completed.
  • Cute Witch: A pretty, powerful witch and the youngest of the main characters. She can qualify as a Hot Witch since she's in her late teens.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: She's very close to Kaleb... aka Kol Mikaelson. To say Marcel is upset by this would be an understatement.
  • Deal with the Devil: She agrees to become a Sister - young witches who serve the Strix - in exchange for a spell that can bring Kol back to life.
  • Death Glare: When she hits you with it, you will go flying, making it an almost literal death glare.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her dad walked out on her shortly after she was born.
  • The Dragon: To Marcel, for a time. She was his secret weapon and the method by which he was able to become even more powerful and the vampires became the dominant supernatural force in New Orleans.
    • Though the situation was more blurred than that, while she was helping him, hurting the witches was her own personal request as she wanted revenge. "You know what I really want Marcel? I want them to pay."
  • The Exile: Her leadership over the covens doesn't last long when Vincent tricks her into revealing she purposefully set Hayley on a fellow witch. As punishment she's exiled from the witch community and cut off from her ancestors' magic.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Her fate thanks to Elijah and Freya. After her death her soul was placed in the Ancestor lands so Kol and Vincent could bring her back. However, in order to steal power from the ancestors to kill Lucian, Freya and Elijah conspired to take away her protection leaving her trapped and at their mercy. Later after being tortured by them she manages to cut off the ancestors from the land of the living. Word Of G Od says that Davina is still alive, but if so she is currently trapped for all time with a horde of pissed off witches who will torture her forever.
  • Genius Bruiser: In addition to her vast power, Davina is very smart, knowing which spells to use at the right time. She seems to be the only witch who thinks rationally.
    • Davina beats Klaus for the second time this way as well, using a spell to poison her blood.
  • Girl in the Tower: Or church attic to be precise. Marcel kept her locked up both to safeguard her from the other witches and people who would take advantage of her power and to protect to outside world should she lose control.
    • Davina wasn't locked up though, if she wanted to leave all she had to was ask Marcel, who doted on her. Strangely, some characters such as Kieran, thought this.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Considering all she's been through and the numerous betrayals she's endured, it's little wonder she can be rather short-tempered at times.
  • Hunter of His Own Kind: She's a witch who helps Marcel keep the other witches in line by sensing if, when, and where they do magic. Turns out that she has pretty good reason for being one, too.
  • Happily Married: To Kol.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: She expresses this desire to Elijah. Turns out, having uncontrollable power gained from the ritual sacrifice of her friends isn't exactly something she enjoys.
  • It's Personal: Her alliance with Marcel due to the fact that witches slaughtered her friends and she wants to make them suffer.
  • Kid with the Leash: As of the Season One Finale, she becomes this after resurrecting Mikael and holding him prisoner.
    • And again in season three, after she suspends the Crescent Curse over Hayley and what's left of her pack.
  • Little Miss Badass: She's the youngest main character...and perhaps the most dangerous.
  • Love Makes You Dumb: She'll do anything to bring Kol back. Even if it means agreeing to work for a group of highly dangerous elder vampires who are even less trustworthy than Klaus.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Her plan to take out the witch who attacked and undermined her inadvertently leads to a massacre of most of the Ninth Ward witches. She's understandably shaken and guilt-ridden, even moreso when the witch's son vows to take revenge for his mother's death.
  • Mysterious Waif: Initially, before her nature was revealed.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: What she lacks in height she makes up for power. She can easily throw around an Original like a rag doll and mind wipe them for equal measure. She gained this power by involuntarily absorbing the power of the three Witch girls that were slaughtered in the Harvest Ritual right before Marcel took her away. She effortlessly beats Klaus and Elijah, making the former start to turn into a wolf against his will and making the latter choke on a thousand years' worth of blood. She then knocks them out.
    • Despite being reduced to a "normal" witch, she is still high in power, being stronger than Kaleb, and Klaus still considers her powerful.
  • Screw Destiny: The reason she helps Marcel keep the Witches in line. She was chosen to sacrifice herself along with three other girls in a Harvest Ritual that was to keep the New Orleans Witches in contact with their Ancestral Magic. Though they downplayed the killing part, it was supposed to lead to their resurrection. Though such a promise means little in the face of traumatic slaughter with no real guarantee they'd come back alive, so you could imagine her reasons for fighting that fate once she learned the truth.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Though she often appears aloof and cold, she has been shown to soften around people she knows better (especially Marcel, her childhood friend Tim, and Josh).
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: She understandably becomes colder and more ruthless after three seasons of power-plays and temporary alliances with the Originals, Marcel and his crew and the other witches.
  • When She Smiles: Understandably, she tends to wear a suspicious scowl when around strangers. Also, the Ice aspect of her personality makes her seem cool and aloof. However, when she smiles and laughs you remember she's just a teenager looking for some kind of normal.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Very powerful, but lacks in skill due to her youth and the circumstances she came to gain her powers in the first place.
    • Thanks to Elijah and some time and growth, she becomes savvier and more skilled. Even after being depowered, she remains a strong witch and is even smarter, defeating Klaus by preying on his flaws.
  • Weak, but Skilled: After being forced to complete the Harvest Ritual. She's got the same Came Back Strong power boost as the other girls, but it pales in comparison to her previous level. She's gotten a lot more skilled at using it however, managing to bind Mikael. And as of Season 2 she's pulling off cloaking spells good enough to hide from Esther, and she's getting close to figuring out how to break Mikael's sire bond and kill him without killing off his entire family. All while managing high school and fighting off werewolves four to one.
  • The Woman Wearing the Queenly Mask: She carries an imperfect facade of authority as Regent, but inside she's painfully aware of how tenuous her rule over the Covens is, and frequently goes to Marcel for advice on how to keep the witches in line.
  • Young Conqueror: She decides to become Regent for the one off chance to resurrect Kol. Instead Rebekah and Elijah deceive her into resurrecting Esther instead Furious at them tricking her, Davina declares war on the Mikaelsons. Vincent notes that without guidance, Davina could very well become 'the wickedest [witch] of them all.'

How well does it match the trope?
