Sirens (Formerly Psychics)

    In General
The Sirens are immortal psychics who made a pact with Arcadius AKA The Devil in exchange for eternal life, youth and beauty. There are only two sirens.
  • Co-Dragons: The Sirens are Cade's enforces whose job is to hunt and kill evildoers in order to send their souls to Hell. However they both wish to renege on their deal and after Sybil makes a deal with Cade to make Damon and Stefan his new right hand men they become separate antagonists in their own right.
  • Complete Immortality: Resurrective Immortality. They cannot be killed or destroyed by any conventional means, as their souls will be instantly send back to their bodies by Arcadius after their death.
  • Kill It with Fire: The only true way for the Siren's to be killed is if they are hit with hellfire which will completely destroy their bodies. They end up killed this way by Arcadius himself after he arrives on Earth in episode 10 and decides to take a more hands on approach with the situation at hand.
  • Our Sirens Are Different: The sirens are immortally young and beautiful psychics. They are responsible for Greek myths about Sirens in the Vampire Diaries universe.

    Sybil

Sybil

Played By: Nathalie Kelley

Sybil is a character introduced in the season finale of the seventh season and a major antagonist of the eighth season of The Vampire Diaries. Through clues left by Enzo, Bonnie deduces the creature is a Siren, as it corrupts and enslaves those that cross its path, and feeds off of the darkness in a person's soul as well as devouring their bodies.

  • Achilles' Heel: Her weakness is an ancient tuning fork which produces a high pitch sound that only Sirens and Witches can hear and the sound incapacitates her allowing her to be captured.
  • Cannibalism Superpower: Sybil has to feed to recover her strength. She feeds on a person's soul and everything horrible that the person has ever done. She also has a need to feed on the physical bodies of her victims, leaving behind mere scraps of limbs and blood. Also by feeding, she is able to assume a normal human form rather then her monstrous one.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Of Season 8. For most of the season she is presented as the Big Bad, manipulating multiple people including her own sister, with Cade as a distant Greater-Scope Villain. However, after both her and Seline fail to kill each other using the Bell, Cade arrives on Earth, kills the two and decides to take a more hands on approach with his operations on Earth.
  • The Dreaded: She was trapped in a vault sealed by a Bennett witch and the main characters were warned in season 7 to never allow the vault to be opened at all costs. Virginia who was giving them the warnings was willing to kill Bonnie just to prevent Sybil from ever being released.
  • Expy: In-Universe of Silas as their both immortals (Silas was a truly immortal man, and also a Monster who was told to be unkillable), both are also thousands of years old, both were imprisoned by a Bennett witch in their cave cells, both have an ability to create illusions and control people's minds. Both were rumored to bring about hell on earth and the end of the world. Virginia attacked Bonnie when she learned about the possibility of the vault being opened just like Kol tried to kill Jeremy when he learned about the possibility of Silas being free.
  • Immortality:Been alive for thousands of years and apparently cannot be killed.
  • Mind Manipulation: Her main ability with which she controls Enzo and Damon with and has them feed her. It is also shown that she can enter people's minds and change their memories.
  • More than Mind Control: Enzo and Damon under her control still retain their personalities and are aware they are being controlled with Enzo commenting about when will she ever let them go and Damon voluntarily turning off his humanity as a way of dealing with the things she has them do.
    • Enzo also warns Bonnie and Stefan to leave to avoid being forced to kill them by Sybil. Later shown that Enzo is able to resist her because of his love for Bonnie and Damon has some resistance because of his for Elena (and as recently revealed, of Bonnie). Sybil is able to get full control of Damon by manipulating his memories of Elena and later of Bonnie.
    • Another aspect that is revealed is that someone has to fully commit to her, for her to have full control of them and that in some way they do this out of the fear of going to hell which will be their fate if she kills them which is why Damon is so obedient to her and even after she is captured he still feels compelled to follow her orders and as she tells Stefan that he is now obeying her out of his own free will.
  • Naked First Impression: She's introduced doing a Sexy Surfacing Shot while naked from out of a Pool filled with blood.
  • No-Sell: Shown in episode 2 that neck-snapping doesn't work on her like it does for other immortal creatures who get temporarily put out of commission, while she recovers from it in a second.
  • Sadistic Choice: She gives Bonnie the choice of who she wants to choose to live, Enzo(her boyfriend) or Damon(her best friend) as she is forcing them to fight to the death.
    • Her general control over Damon and Enzo is based on giving them the choice to either do what she says or she will kill them and send them straight to hell where they will be punished for an eternity for their past evil deeds.
  • There Is Another: She reveals that she has an older sister who is also a Siren who is revealed to be Seline.
  • Tragic Villain: She reveals that when she was a little girl she was banished from her village for being a psychic and sent to an island were she was found by another like her and they became like sisters and together used their abilities to lure ships to the shore to crash so they can take the supplies to survive on the island, which she had a problem with and she was also unknowingly eating the bodies of the dead sailors and when she finds out she jumps off a cliff and in order to save her, her sister makes a deal with the first ever psychic to save her life resulting in them becoming the creatures they become and being forced to feed on people to maintain their beauty.
  • Villain Ball: Makes some dumb decisions that lead to her being captured. For one she decides to only threaten to use her powers on Caroline and Bonnie to make them do what she wants which bites her in the butt later when she makes them drive her to Damon and Enzo's location and she decides to not wear a seat belt under the pretense that she can't die and doesn't have to worry about it. This and Sybil taunting her about Enzo and Damon leads to Bonnie stomping on the brakes which results in her getting thrown through the windshield.

    Seline

Seline

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/802_010alaric_seline.png
Played By: Kristen Gutoskie

Nanny of Josie and Lizzie Saltzman, Alaric and Caroline's kids and is eventually revealed to be Sybil's sister and also a Siren.

  • Cannibalism Superpower: As part of being a Siren, eating people maintains her beauty.
  • The Corrupter: To Sybil as revealed in their background story that she was secretly feeding her the dead bodies of the sailors they killed when they used their powers to make them crash their ships and made Sybil think that they weren't killing them when they did this. Generally she is responsible for giving Sybil a do what you must to survive and that the world is evil mind set.
  • Deal with the Devil: She made one centuries ago to save her sister who attempted suicide which resulted in them both becoming immortals but they will have to feed on people with damned souls to maintain their beauty and in the process sending there souls to the place known as hell.
  • Evil All Along: Yep, the nanny who is babysitting Alaric's kids turns out to be a thousand year old Siren who is responsible for Sybil becoming what she is in the first place.
  • Foreshadowing: A couple of hints that she was a Siren before the reveal are she had a day off on the day that Alaric and Georgie discover that the pitch fork is a tuning fork that could hurt Sirens and Georgie wasn't effected and the reveal also seems to explain why Virginia slit her throat and explains how she stayed alive long enough for Caroline to give her blood and heal her. Also when Sybil was thrown though a car windshield , she still has scratches showing that injuries that happen to them don't immediately heal.
  • Immortality: As the second Siren in existence she has been alive for thousands of years and there is no known way to kill her.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: When she was younger she used her psychic powers to lure sailors to crash their ships into the shores and feed off their bodies to survive on the island while secretly feeding them to Sybil. Also as a Siren has to eat people to maintain her beauty.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: She is unaware of the existence of supernatural creatures and that the children she's babysitting are witches. Subverted when it is revealed she is a supernatural creature.
  • Mind Manipulation: As a Siren she has the ability to control people's minds like her sister Sybil.
  • Not Blood Siblings: She is not related to Sybil by blood instead as it is revealed that she found her on the shores of the island and since then they were as close as sisters as they also shared the same abilities.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Kills Georgie and feeds on her body after mind-controlling her to attempt to release her sister from the armory cell.

Psychics

    Cade

Arcadius (Cade)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/804_003_cade.png
Played By: Wolé Parks

Arcadius, often called Cade was the world's first Psychic who in death, came to be known as The Devil, and the creator of Hell.

  • Achilles' Heel: As it turns out the one thing that can truly kill Cade for good is a dagger made from the bone and ash of his original body after he was burned at the stake. The good guys find it and Stefan later uses it on Cade to kill him in a fiery explosion.
  • Big Bad: Of season eight, being responsible for turning Sybil and Seline into sirens, as well as their master. In the presnt he now seeks Stefan and Damon to be his servants.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: In contrast to his initial sympathetic appearance, Cade has since grown into someone who loves evil, and seeks to corrupt the innocent into damnation, taking a delight in the death and suffering of others.
  • Deal with the Devil: Seline made a deal with him to save Sybil and the deal resulted in them becoming immortal but the price being that they must feed on people with corrupted souls to maintain their beauty and the souls of the people they feed on come to him in hell.
  • Fallen Hero: A powerful psychic and healer. Wanting to help humanity and guide them. He was set to be one of humanity's greatest spiritual leaders and teachers. Then he tried to help the wrong man and ended up being burnt at the stake.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Rarely does his smile leave his face, and he keeps up a seemingly friendly demeanour, all the while giving himself a sinister air about him.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He is the one who turned Seline and Sybil into Sirens and Sybil claims that her actions are under his orders. Also the stories/legends about the devil and hell are based on him as he is revealed to be the one who created hell.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Originally his goal was to take revenge on those who wronged and killed him, leading to his creation of hell. Over the centuries he orchestrated the corruption and mass murder on humans via the sirens and by the time of season eight, he admits to wanting to claim otherwise innocent souls and corrupt them to damnation. He is rather proud of this fact.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: His backstory is that he came to this realization when his village burns him at the stake all because he offered to help a man in his village "get rid of his lustful urges towards a village girl" and the fact that everyone he ever helped with his gift are now executing him and torturing him.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: Shows Stefan memories of his days as the Ripper of Monterey and all the death he dealt and the blood shed, which is exactly what Cade is looking for in a servant.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: He helped everyone in his village and just wanted to help a man with his troubling thoughts only resulting in that man turning the village against him.
  • Posthumous Character: He has been dead for centuries since he was burned at the stake and it is him as a ghost that runs hell and made the deal with Seline and he his giving orders to Sybil from beyond the grave. Later subverted when he is summoned to Earth and becomes the central antagonist of season 8.
  • Redemption Rejection: His philosophy. He admits that remorse means nothing to him and will drag souls to Hell even if they're crimes are accidental or if they where otherwise good people (Georgie for example). In fact, he admits his desire to corrupt innocent souls away from Heaven for him to claim.
  • Satanic Archetype: It's spelled out that he's the devil. However he doesn't share the demonic or Fallen Angel backstory and isn't named Satan, Lucifer or any other names of the devil.
  • Smug Snake: His basic demeanour throughout his appearances, as he demonstrates how he's virtually unstoppable as he goes about his business.
  • Superpower Lottery: Arcadius was the world's first psychic and first supernatural being. He is also the oldest supernatural being in existence, even older then Silas and Qetsiyah. He is immortal and immune to all forms of death. Able to reshape reality creating his own dimension that can host billions of souls. A powerful pyrokinetic, gifted with Telepathy and Telekinesis. Oh, he can also make people immortal at will.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: In his last moments this occurs. While confused and terrified at being burned alive by those he tried to help. It was witnessing the young boy he considered his friend willingly join the group burning him to death. That finally triggered his final fall into villainy.
  • Tragic Villain: He was a kind man who helped the people in his village with his abilities until he is unfairly burned at the stake by them and the rage of this causes him to create hell and spend centuries punishing evil and corrupted souls becoming known as the Devil. His new personality, philosophy and later actions however more or less remove his initial sympathy.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Implied. When Seline offers Josie and Lizzie to him, he is pretty entertained and intrigued at warping and corrupting them into his servants.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: After he arrives on Earth Cade decides to kill the Sirens for their constant backstabbing and decides to take a hands on approach to the death and corruption of human souls.
