    Elena Gilbert
Elena is the novel series' heroine and protagonist (opposite Stefan), and the female lead character (except Dark Reunion). She was born during the 70's, though her parents have died, leaving her and her four-year-old sister, named Margaret, to live with their uncle and aunt Gilbert. Elena is seventeen at the beginning of the very first book, and she is the most beautiful, popular girl at Robert E. Lee High School (mainly called the Queen). She is normally confident and ambitious on top of being beautiful; not surprisingly, she also shows many Alpha Bitch traits like selfishness and boastfulness. She does grow out of it after meeting her soulmate Stefan, however, and her second death in the series (after becoming a vampire) is to protect those she cares for.

Tropes associated with Elena include:

  • Action Girl: Elena is highly capable of taking care of herself and can be quite kick ass when she needs to be. She'll especially get motivated if her loved ones are ever in danger. Not to mention she is a powerful guardian with extraordinary powers.
  • The Ageless: Elena is an immortal being. She has the ability to live forever with Stefan as an Earth Guardian without ever physically aging. This is because in the final book of the series, Elena drank some special water from the Fountain of Eternal Life & Youth, and therefore, cannot physically age and cannot die under normal circumstances.
  • Alpha Bitch: Before meeting Stefan, Elena fit this trope. Elena was known to be vain, selfish, spoiled and childish. She was also highly competitive and was known as the Queen at her high school. Elena would often be in competition with her former friend turned rival, Caroline for the title of Queen Bee at school in terms of social status and popularity.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Elena's relationship with Stefan (brooding, mysterious, intense loner) and Damon (sarcastic, rebellious, dangerous bad boy).
  • Anchored Ship: With Stefan in the beginning. Something stopped Stefan and Elena from becoming a couple in the first book. This was because of Stefan's deep dark secret (of him being a centuries old vampire).
  • Angelic Beauty: In terms of her physical appearance, Elena is frequently described as looking like an angel and having a rather angelic physical traits, qualities, and appearance. This is because Elena is actually half human/half angel (Guardian) and all Guardian's share a similar physical colouring and appearance to Elena. Elena has light pale golden blonde hair, deep blue lapis lazuli eyes and creamy, white skin.
  • Author Avatar: Although not directly confirmed by the author herself, it is obvious that the character of Elena is physically modelled after L.J. Smith, who is both blonde-haired and blue eyed.
  • Badass Normal: Before Elena discovered that she was a supernatural being, she was still a tough, strong and capable girl.
  • Barrier Maiden: Elena is a powerful Guardian, whose destiny is to maintain the balance between good and evil. Therefore, the wellbeing of the entire planet depends on her ability to destroy evil forces. This has been Elena's destiny since she was 12 years old.
  • Battle Couple: With Stefan. She, along with Stefan, are always in the middle of the action. She often fights or battles the bad guys alongside Stefan.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: Because of Elena's physical beauty, everyone equates her beauty with her being a good hearted person with an empathetic, compassionate and caring nature. Even though she has her share of flaws such as her vanity, selfishness, her stubbornness, her immaturity, and her self-centredness. Despite her possessing these flaws, they are often overlooked by almost everyone, because of her physical beauty.
  • Because Destiny Says So: In regards to Elena and her relationship with Stefan. Before meeting Stefan, Elena was told by her psychic friend Bonnie that she would meet a tall, dark and handsome stranger. Coincidentally, about 5 minutes later, Stefan arrived, implying that Stefan and Elena meeting was fate, destiny or "in the stars".
  • Birds of a Feather: With Damon. Elena has said that she and Damon are a lot alike personality-wise. Both are passionate, headstrong, stubborn, vain and selfish.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Before she met Stefan. Cold, icy and vain, Elena could attract any guy that she wanted, but her personality was less beautiful than her physical appearance.
  • Bloody Murder: Elena's sacred blood is a powerful weapon used to kill Old Ones, like Klaus. Her blood can possibly kill other powerful supernatural beings as well.
  • Character Development: Elena goes from a selfish, cold, vain, spoiled teenage girl who thinks the world revolves around her to a much kinder, compassionate, generous and selfless character whose destiny is much greater than she believes.
  • The Chick: Elena is the person who encourages teamwork and loyalty and brings everyone together because of it. She's the glue that holds everyone together.
  • The Chosen One: Elena goes from being an ordinary girl next door to finding out that she was destined to be a powerful Guardian who is meant to save the world and maintain the force of good and evil.
  • Class Representative: Elena is a member of the Senior Welcoming Committee. She also uses her position to try to get close to Stefan in The Awakening by wanting to show him around the school.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Elena is this way when it comes to Stefan. At the beginning of the series, Elena and Caroline were in competition for Stefan's attention, with both girls wanting to be Stefan's object of affection. At the Homecoming Dance, Stefan had asked Caroline to go to the dance with him. This made Elena very envious and jealous, heating up the rivalry between her and Caroline. Elena has also said that she will have Stefan and he will be hers, even if it killed them both.
  • Cosmic Entity: Elena is half angel. She is a very powerful Earth Guardian who has super powers and abilities.
  • Damsel out of Distress: Despite the previous trope, Elena can be pretty badass when she needs to be and doesn't always need one of her male suitors (Stefan, Damon, or Matt) to save her.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Elena originally starts off as a cold, vain, shallow and selfish individual, but she becomes a much kinder, caring, selfless and compassionate person as the series progresses. Much of the change in her personality, behaviour and attitude happened after meeting Stefan.
  • Determinator: Elena is highly determined and when she wants something, she will stop at nothing to get it. This is one of Elena's primary personality traits. Examples of this include Elena's determination to have Stefan at the beginning of the series and when Stefan was trapped in the Dark Dimension, Elena went to Hell and back (literally) just to get Stefan back. Bottom line, when Elena is determined about anything, she won't stop till she gets it.
  • Devoted to You: Elena may have much male attention but she is hopelessly and undyingly in love with Stefan Salvatore. She even acknowledges him as her soulmate and her true love. Eventually, Elena ends up choosing Stefan over Damon...finally.
  • Dude Magnet: Elena is physically beautiful, therefore, she attracts males/men like moths to a flame. Elena is the object of desire for almost every boy in Fells Church. She attracts much male attention but at the start of the series, the one person she wants to gain attention from is Stefan Salvatore. She is deeply hurt when Stefan makes efforts to avoid her. Almost every single known male character of the series has show interest, has been attracted or has been in love with Elena. These male characters include Stefan, Damon, Matt, Tyler, and Caleb.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Elena couldn't stop being mesmerized by Stefan's physical beauty. He's an incredibly beautiful Pretty Boy.
  • Elemental Powers: Elena has the ability to influence the elements of the Earth since Elena is an Earth Guardian.
  • Emotionless Girl: Elena was cold, vain, selfish and aloof at the start. She didn't show much emotion or vulnerability. This changed after she met and fell in love with Stefan however.
  • The Empath: As a guardian angel, Elena is able to sense the emotions of others.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Elena eventually develops special powers and abilities later on in the series.
  • Eternal Hero: Elena is a powerful Earth Guardian who is immortal.
  • Eternal Love: Elena's romance with Stefan. It has been noted throughout the books that Elena and Stefan's romance is eternal and never ending, especially with the fact that they are bounded soul to soul by silver cord which is only visible to them. Now that Elena is an immortal being due to drinking some special water from the Fountain of Eternal Life and Youth, Elena can now spend an eternity with her true beloved soulmate Stefan as she had always wished throughout the series.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Elena has the admiration and respect from many girls as well. She is the type of girl that all the guys want and all the girls want to be like.
  • Everybody Hates Mathematics: Although Elena is an all-around good student, Elena admits that she hates math, especially trigonometry. She even admits that she was failing math class and didn't care.
  • Everyone Loves Blondes: Elena is the object of male desire most likely because she is blonde. She is popular and attracts the opposite sex easily.
  • Fallen Princess: Elena started out as the most popular and beautiful girl in Fells Church. But all of that seemed to change once her true destiny was revealed.
  • Fangs Are Evil: Elena developes fangs after she's transformed into a vampire. She uses them for feeding on blood of human victims.
  • Fate Drives Us Together: This is a trope that is always representative of Stefan and Elena and their love story: FATE, FATE, FATE. DESTINY, DESTINY, DESTINY. In almost every single book, there is always an implication about how Stefan and Elena are destined and meant to be together because they are each other's One True Love.
  • Former Friend of Alpha Bitch: To Caroline. Elena used to be close friends with Caroline since childhood, but eventually the two became rivals over various personal matters (popularity, status, boys, beauty, etc).
  • For Happiness: Elena has a strong desire to see everyone she loves happy.
  • Go-Getter Girl: Elena is a top student and is involved in many extra curricular school activities in high school. Elena is ambitious, smart, and studious. She is very active and popular within her school setting.
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: Wings Of Power. Elena possesses several different wings which possess different powers. These include Wings Of Protection, which are strong and, like the name, very useful to protect itself and whoever is there with it; Wings Of Purification, which are white in coloring and can remove all sins of a person and their memories; Wings Of Remembrance, which are violet-blue in color and can return someone's memories; Wings Of Redemption, which are rainbow-colored and can redeem people of their sins; Wings Of The Wind, which are gold in color, were used to create wind and these wings helped it to fly; and Wings Of Destruction, which are used to destroy things which are obstacles or are possible dangers.
  • Greed: At the start of the series, Elena seemed to want it all: boys, popularity, status. But the one she wanted most of all was Stefan and she did everything to get him, including scheming and plotting.
  • Guardian Angel: Technically. Elena is a Guardian who is meant to fight evil forces and maintain the balance of goodness in the world. She is essentially a protector of mankind.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Elena has long, pale blonde hair and there is much emphasis on her hair and it's colour in the novel series. Despite her occasional shallowness, she's actually a kind, compassionate, young girl who's often described as being pure, innocent and virginal.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Elena is half angel / Guardian, half human. Her mother, Elizabeth was a Guardian and her father, Thomas was a human.
  • Happily Adopted: After Elena's parents died, Elena and her sister, Margaret are adopted and raised by their Aunt Judith Gilbert.

  • The Heart: Elena is the person who encourages teamwork and loyalty and brings everyone together because of it. She's the glue that holds everyone together.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Elena and her relationships with Stefan, Damon and Matt, but especially Stefan. Elena has endured the most pain and heartbreak in her relationship with Stefan. Overall, Elena's romantic life has been a huge mess.
  • The Hero: Elena is the central character of the entire novel series. She is the one who serves the role of the series to protect all of her loved ones and keep them safe. She is opposite Stefan, with Stefan being The Hero of the novel series.
  • Hero Protagonist: Both the heroine and the protagonist of the story.
  • Heroic BSoD:
    • Elena goes into a deep depression when Stefan is kidnapped and tortured in the ''Dark Dimension'' in Shadow Souls.
    • After Damon dies in Midnight, Elena is shocked and distraught over Damon's death. Stefan is as well; so much so that his personality starts changing.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Elena does this frequently throughout the series. In The Fury, Elena sacrifices her immortal life by burning in the sunlight in order to protect Stefan and Damon from Katherine. This results in her becoming a spirit of the afterlife in Dark Reunion. Bonnie mentioned that Elena's sacrifice was selfless. Elena makes sacrifices and risks her life in order to save Stefan from the Dark Dimension in Shadow Souls. She also makes a deal with the Guardians in Destiny Rising to save Damon's life so that he doesn't succumb to darkness. Elena makes small sacrifices for her friends and family throughout the series in order to protect them.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Underneath Elena's coldness and selfishness is a genuinely kind, caring, warm and compassionate individual. But most people don't see that when they first encounter Elena. Hence why she had the nickname Ice Princess.
  • Hot-Blooded: Elena is known to be rather passionate, feisty and strong-willed. She is never hesitant to stand up to anyone she doesn't agree with. Sometimes, she has a habit of speaking before she thinks and she can be short tempered at times.
  • Hope Bringer: Elena is often the character who brings hope to all her loved ones. She motivates and inspires them to stay strong and to never give up no matter what. She manages to be hopeful that things will always turn out okay for herself and everyone she cares for.

  • I Can Change My Beloved:
    • First, with Stefan. Elena tried to get Stefan to become less isolated and lonely. She also tried to make Stefan learn to accept himself and overcome his immense guilt that he has felt for centuries.
    • With Damon. She has tried to influence Damon to become a better person and avoid succumbing to the darkness.
  • Immortality: Elena is an immortal human/Guardian after she drank some special water from a place called the Fountain of Eternal Life and Youth. This grants Elena the ability to live an eternity with Stefan and never physically age.
  • Informed Attractiveness: Almost all of the characters in the novel series frequently comment about how physically beautiful and drop dead gorgeous Elena is.
  • Informed Attribute: The reader is constantly reminded of Elena's extraordinary physical beauty.
  • The Ingenue: Elena is often described as being young, pure, innocent and virginal. Although Stefan and Damon don't originally think of Elena as a virgin, it was revealed that Elena is in fact, actually a virgin. Stefan referred to Elena as a maiden.
  • Inhumanly Beautiful Race: Elena fits this trope because her physical traits and physical beauty is described to be angelic, inhumane and ethereal. This is because Elena is part angel (Guardian) and therefore, because of this, Elena is indeed half non-human.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Elena has an unusual and interesting eye colour which is frequently noted throughout the novel series. Her eyes are a lapis lazuli blue colouring (which is a deep, dark blue similarly to that of sapphires; it is the same colour as the stone in which the vampires wear on their rings in order to protect themselves from the sunlight). However, there are some cases in which Elena's eye colour has been described as being a violet-blue. Elena's eyes have also been said to be a deep, dark blue with flecks of gold in them.
  • Inter-Class Romance: With Stefan. Elena is from a middle class background, while Stefan comes from a wealthy, noble, aristocratic background.
  • Interspecies Romance: Elena and Stefan are the romance story of the series, but they are of different species. This caused some tension in their relationship in the beginning, making their status as Star-Crossed Lovers even more evident. This is much of the central theme of Stelena's love story. Elena is a normal, human girl (in the beginning... she discovers that she is actually a supernatural being who is half angel/Guardian, half human ) born during the 20th century and Stefan is a centuries old vampire/immortal born during the 14th century.
  • In the Blood: Elena is destined to be a Guardian, just like her birth mother, Elizabeth. So is her half-sister, Katherine and her younger sister Margaret; they are also Guardians as well.
  • It's All About Me: During the beginning of the series, Elena starts off as being a selfish, self-indulgent and self-absorbed character who thinks that the world revolves and centres around her. As the series progresses however, Elena learns to become more selfless, generous and compassionate.
  • Jeanne d'Archétype: Elena was a regular young teenage girl who came from a normal background who was thrust into the roles of responsibility, leadership and danger for a much greater cause than herself. Elena is a Guardian who is destined to fight all evil in the world. She also leads her friends during her mission as a guardian.
  • The Kirk: In the main trio consisting of herself, Stefan and Damon. Elena is The Kirk (Ego), Stefan is The Spock (Superego) and Damon is The McCoy (Id). Elena balances out the contrasting and conflicting personalities and outlooks between Stefan and Damon. Elena is often forced to choose or pick a side between the brothers.
  • Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: Elena is the Light to Katherine's Dark. While Elena was more compassionate, kind and caring, Katherine was more sinister, evil and selfish.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Elena is this for all of her loved ones, but she is especially this for Stefan (and even Damon). Stefan has been shown to be unable to function as an individual without Elena. Elena has also been shown to be unable to completely function without Stefan in her presence.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Elena's hair in the novels is often emphasized as being long, luscious, pale blonde and gorgeous. There is almost always a reference to how long and beautiful Elena's hair is in the novel series.
  • Love at First Sight: Elena with Stefan. Elena felt an immediate connection with Stefan. Stefan, on the other hand, took some time to come around and reciprocate Elena's affections. When Stefan did reciprocate Elena's affections, he fell hard and fast for her, and vice versa.
  • Love Before First Sight: This happened in the very beginning of the series, when Elena sensed that she was going to meet someone "very special" on the first day of school. Elena had mentioned that during her vacation in Paris, she felt that she was "missing something". Bonnie had told Elena after reading her palm that she would meet a "tall, dark, and handsome stranger" (the stranger being Stefan) before Stefan encountered Elena.
  • Love Epiphany: Elena realizes that she has much deeper feelings for Damon in The Return trilogy.
  • Love Triangle: Elena is in a love triangle with Stefan and Damon Salvatore, two vampire brothers. This is much of the focus of the novel series and is the main love triangle of the series. Elena has also been in a love triangle with Stefan and Matt, a love triangle with Stefan and Katherine and a bit of a love triangle with Damon and Bonnie.
  • Love You and Everybody: Stefan has said that sometimes, Elena suffers from something called 'Loveitis', where she ends up loving everyone and loving everyone too much.

  • Messianic Archetype: Elena is a powerful Guardian (or angel) who is meant to fight all evil on Earth. Her destiny is to save the world from evil forces corrupting it.
  • Mindlink Mates: With Stefan. She often used telepathy to communicate with him.
  • My Girl Is Not a Slut: Elena was known to be promiscuous, but Stefan doesn't seem to care.
  • Narcissist: Elena is obsessed with her physical beauty and she often uses her beauty to get what she wants, including boys, popularity and status. Because of this, Elena has come off as vain, self-absorbed and self-centred. Elena's biggest Fatal Flaw is her vanity and selfishness.
  • Nephewism: After Elena's parents died in a tragic car accident, Elena is raised by her Aunt Judith Gilbert and her Uncle Robert Maxwell.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: She is a powerful Earth Guardian who has incredibly strength almost similar to that of a powerful spirit or goddess.
  • Official Couple: Elena has this type of relationship with Stefan. Her romance with Stefan is the main romantic couple of the series and most of the series revolves around their love story.
  • One True Love: For Stefan. Her soul is linked to Stefan's soul by a silver cord of destiny.
  • Operation: Jealousy: In the first book, Elena flirts with all of the guys at the high school dance to make Stefan notice her or make him jealous. It could be seen as Elena trying to get back at Stefan for taking Caroline Forbes as his date to the dance.
  • Opposites Attract: With Stefan. Elena is more outgoing and popular, while Stefan is more shy and a loner.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: Elena classified as a normal high school girl before Stefan came into her life. After that, everything changed and she wasn't so ordinary after all.
  • Parental Abandonment: Both of Elena's parents died in a tragic car accident when Elena was much younger.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Matt, of course. They are childhood friends. Elena and Matt still deeply care for each other as best friends and they are undyingly loyal to one another.
  • Plucky Girl: Despite all of the tragedy that she has endured, especially after losing her parents in a car accident, Elena still remained brave, courageous and optimistic about her life. After enduring problems, Elena always comes back from it, stronger than she was before.
  • The Pollyanna: Despite all the changes Elena has endured, she still maintains a happy, optimistic and positive attitude. Not only for herself but for her loved ones as well.
  • The Power of Love:
    • In The Fury, Elena was sired to Damon due to having more of Damon's blood in her system after she had turned. She had thought that she was in love with Damon and not Stefan because of this. Elena's love for Stefan was so powerful that Elena managed to break through her sire bond to Damon by remembering her memories with and love for Stefan.
    • Elena falling for Stefan transformed her from a cold, icy, selfish and vain individual into someone who is much more kinder, caring and compassionate individual.
  • Really Gets Around: Before Elena met Stefan, she was rather promiscuous and dated many boys. She often dated many boys and used them as prizes and trophies to help boost her self esteem and self-confidence. Most of this was a facade used to cover up her inner loneliness.
  • Reincarnation Romance: Elena has this type of relationship with Stefan. Elena and Stefan share a love so deep, strong, and powerful that it has overcome basically everything bad that has happened. Not even death could keep the two apart; this happens in Dark Reunion, when Elena is a spirit of the afterlife after she had died sacrificing her life to save Stefan and Damon from Katherine killing them all. At the end of Dark Reunion, Elena comes back from the afterlife and happily reunites with Stefan. It has been revealed in "Shadow Souls" that Elena and Stefan bound by the Red String of Fate. The two have endured many struggles, issues and chaos that have tried to come between them. Nevertheless, their love is so strong that it has managed to conquer all of the obstacles that have been thrown at them throughout the series.
  • Red String of Fate: In this specific novel series, the equivalent of this ancient theory is the Soulmate Principle, which instead of a red string linking two destined lovers from pinky to pinky, a silver cord is used to link two destined lovers heart to heart. Elena is bound to Stefan by a silver cord, which links them together heart-to-heart or soul to soul. This implies that Elena and Stefan are destined soul mates and are each other's One True Love.
  • Rescue Romance: Stefan saves Elena from Tyler in the graveyard as Tyler was about to sexually assault or rape Elena.
  • The Rival: To Caroline. Although her and Caroline originally started out as close friends, they eventually became bitter rivals with each other, competing over popularity and social status.
  • Spoiled Brat: Elena has a sense of entitlement and she gets everything she wants. She'll do anything and everything to get what she wants, no matter what it is.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Elena and Stefan are the epitome of this trope. Throughout the series, both Elena and Stefan constantly fight to be together and stay together, but many obstacles have tried to come between them. Something ...or someone is almost always trying to tear these two young lovers apart.
  • Stepford Smiler: At the start, Elena would put on a happy face and pretend that she was happy but she often recorded in her journal that she was very lonely and sad.
  • Stepford Snarker: In the beginning, Elena often used sarcasm to cover her inner sadness and vulnerability. Her nickname was the Ice Princess after all.
  • Superpower Lottery: Being half angel (Guardian), Elena possesses special powers and abilities. She also possessed superhuman abilities after she was turned into a vampire. As a vampire, she has the following abilities: Super Speed (she can move super fast); she possesses Super Reflexes and super agility as she can react much faster and quicker than mere mortals; she has Super Strength as she can carry or lift heavier objects with ease and little effort; she is able to perform Mind Manipulation and control the mind of any human, influencing their thoughts and their actions; only Vervain is the antidote that can prevent Elena from being able to influence someone's mind; she has a fine Healing Factor as she heals almost immediately from any wound; she is a possessor of Super Senses (all of Elena's senses, such as vision, smell, taste, touch and hearing had become clearer, stronger and heightened). As a guardian angel, she would possess most of those, too, so we presume she is extra powerful. Angel guardians possess Telepathy and Elena can communicate non-verbally and hear others thoughts, specifically other supernatural beings such as vampires, werewolves, angels or any other supernatural beings. Elena frequently uses telepathy with Stefan, Damon and Bonnie throughout the series. She's The Empath, too, as she feels or senses emotions of others. She is able to do Time Manipulation and can actually go back in time. During this process, Elena has the ability to resurrect the dead, reverse memory loss, and also, physical restoration of the damage. She also has sacred special blood that is the ultimate weapon used to destroy all evil supernatural beings and creatures of the entire universe. Elena's blood is the only thing that can completely destroy Old Ones, and also prevent their resurrection. As a Guardian, she is able to live forever without physically aging.
  • They Do: For Stefan and Elena. In The Hunters: Destiny Rising, Elena chooses Stefan over Damon as her eternal mate. They happily reunite and look forward to happily spending eternity together after Elena drinks some special water from the Fountain of Eternal Life and Youth.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After gaining special angelic superhuman abilities and becoming a super-empowered Guardian, Elena is now a highly powerful being on Earth.
  • Touched by Vorlons: Initially, Elena starts of as a regular human girl with no supernatural abilities or powers. However, as the series progresses in The Return trilogy, Elena starts to develop special angelic powers after she came back from the afterlife. It isn't until later on in The Phantom trilogy that Elena discovers her true heritage: that she is actually half angel, hence why she possesses special angelic abilities. During the course of the Original trilogy, she is just a regular human being who is completely unaware of her destiny as a Guardian and is completely unaware of her true heritage.
  • Tsundere: Elena is Type A. She is rather snarky, strong-willed, stubborn, selfish and vain. She can also be very manipulative. Elena's compassionate side will only come out towards a select few of people. Most notably Stefan. Elena never gets mad at Stefan no matter the circumstances.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: Elena almost constantly had this with Damon throughout the series. Despite Elena's strong, undying, all-consuming and powerful love for Stefan, Elena had a strong desire and sexual attraction to Damon and vice versa.
  • Pride: Elena is known to be very vain and proud, especially at the very beginning of the series. Her pride is often her downfall and her stubbornness is associated with her pride.
  • What Beautiful Eyes!: Many people are instantly drawn to the unusual and unique colour of Elena's eyes, which have been described as a deep, dark blue (lapis lazuli) with flecks of gold in them.
  • What Does She See in Him?: Many of Elena's friends question why she has a relationship with Damon or why she cares so much for him. In fact, Elena's relationship with Damon has managed to cause a lot of tension between Elena and her friends, since most of Elena's friends disapprove of Damon and his relationship with Elena.
  • What Is This Feeling?: Elena, who was icy, vain, cold in the beginning, feels this indescribable feeling that she had never felt before when she meets Stefan. Stefan managed to have a significant impact on Elena and as a result, she ends up becoming a much more caring, selfless, compassionate person.
  • Will They or Won't They?:
    • Elena and Damon have this type of relationship. Throughout the series, Elena and Damon have this constant on and off, hot and cold type of relationship, therefore, their relationship often leaves the readers wondering if they will take their relationship farther in future books.
    • In the beginning, Elena's relationship with Stefan. There was this constant push-pull dynamic between them.
  • World's Most Beautiful Woman: Elena is frequently referenced in the novels about how drop dead gorgeous and extremely beautiful she is. Elena has been said to be the most beautiful girl in the entire town of Fells Church; all of the guys want her and all of the girls desire to be like her and have an admiration for her.

     Stefan Salvatore
Stefan is the novel series' hero, male protagonist (opposite Elena), and male lead character. Stefan is Damon's moral, benevolent younger brother. Stefan is a 500+ year old immortal born during the time of The Renaissance (during the fifteenth century), who was one of the Salvatore brothers that fell deeply in love with a young beautiful German girl who was a vampire, Katherine Von Schwarzschild, during his human life and before he was transformed into a vampire when he was a 17 year old human noble. Stefan arrives in Fells Church to start a new life and live amongst humans and enrolls as a high school student at Robert E. Lee High School to blend in like a regular teenager. It is there, where Stefan meets Elena Gilbert. He fell for her at first sight, but because Elena bears a striking resemblance to his past and first love, Katherine, he repeatedly tries to avoid her at all costs during the beginning of the series.

Tropes associated with Stefan include:

  • The Ace: No matter what Stefan does, he'll always turn out to be exceptional at it. Whether it's with romance, sports, education, leadership, etc. This has caused other male characters such as Damon, Tyler and even his best friend, Matt to be both admirable and envious of Stefan.
  • Action Hero: Stefan is often involved amidst all of the action in the series, normally alongside Elena.
  • Actual Pacifist: Stefan dislikes using physical violence in most circumstances. However, if he is forced to use violence or kill, expect Stefan to angst and brood about it afterwards. Stefan hates killing and has never killed a human throughout his immortal life.
  • Alcoholic Parent: It was implied in the books that Stefan's father was a heavy drinker and became an alcoholic after Stefan's mother had died. Stefan has also noted that when Giuseppe was drunk, he would get into violent altercations and arguments with Damon.
  • Alliterative Name: Stefan Salvatore. Stefan's first and last name begin with the same letter: S.
  • The Atoner: Due to Stefan feeling that he made costly mistakes regarding his brother Damon and doing wrong by Katherine by letting his intense rivalry with Damon destroy everyone's lives, Stefan spends his life as an immortal in the shadows yearning for a second chance, yearning for redemption from his past sins and most of all, yearning to be accepted amongst humans. Because if Stefan could be accepted amongst humans, maybe he could forgive himself, come out of the darkness and be accepted into the light.
  • Badass Bookworm: Stefan, especially during his human years, was highly scholarly, academic and was highly ambitious. According to Damon, he was ambitious with his studies and had ambitions and goals.
  • Badass Pacifist: Stefan will not kill unless he really has to. But if he has to, he will selflessly sacrifice himself and put himself in the line of fire in order to protect everyone.
  • Cultured Badass: Stefan comes from an aristocratic upbringing and is highly knowledgable of different tastes of art, music, literature, etc.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Stefan has endured lots of pain and suffering in regards to love, especially the grief and tragedy of Stefan losing his first love, Katherine.
  • Battle Couple: Stefan with Elena. Both Stefan and Elena are always in the middle of all of the action. They often go on a mission and battle the enemy together.
  • Because Destiny Says So: Stefan's relationship with Elena. Stefan and Elena unexpectedly meet and instantly feel strongly drawn to each other, almost like it's fate or meant to be. Turns out that Stefan and Elena are actually destined soul mates who are linked soul to soul by a silver cord. This was the reason why there was such a strong magnetic pull between the two during their first meeting.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Stefan may be the nice, caring, compassionate, good brother, but DO NOT betray, manipulate or cross him. He is chilling and scary if crossed. If you hurt, threaten or harm Elena or Damon or any of his friends watch Stefan explode. And when he gets angry, he is chilling and scary; even more scary and out of control than Damon.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Stefan is normally quiet and calm, but he will kick your ass if you cross him.
  • Big Good: Stefan, along with Elena, is the one who does his very best to bring everyone together, regardless of everyone's personalities or personal agenda's, to fight together for peace and justice. Stefan is the embodiment of purity, heroism, courage, nobility, goodness and morality. In fact, Stefan is seen to be the moral compass of the entire series, even more so than Elena.
  • Big Man on Campus: Stefan becomes the most popular guy at school. He's attractive to the female population, top student, cultured, polite, athletic and has the most attractive girl in the school as his girlfriend. He's even voted Homecoming King alongside Elena as Homecoming Queen.
  • Blessed with Suck: Stefan hates being a vampire and views his vampirism as a curse, despite the fact that he can live forever and possesses powers and abilities.
  • Blue Blood: Stefan, like Damon, comes from wealth and an aristocratic family. Stefan was a nobleman during his human years.
  • Boy Meets Girl: At the start of the series, Stefan meets Elena, Elena meets Stefan, Stefan feels an instant connection to Elena (and vice versa), Stefan falls in deeper love with Elena, Stefan develops a romantic relationship with Elena, Stefan loses Elena repeatedly throughout the series (due to obstacles, death, a love triangle, and many other things. See Star-Crossed Lovers), Stefan gets back together with Elena. This is basically the entire premise and core of the series between Stefan and Elena.
  • Byronic Hero: Stefan could be seen as this trope, because he has an ultra dark past and has a generally pessimistic, cynical outlook on life, especially before he met Elena. Before the series began, Stefan had a very cynical view on his life as an immortal. He lived in the shadows and in the darkness, yearning to be accepted by humanity. Stefan could classify as this trope because of his deep, dark past and his all consuming guilt over his actions.
  • Cartwright Curse: Stefan has had a first love who "died" and turned out to be crazy (Katherine), spent centuries without a love interest due to the grief and guilt of losing his first love and finally, meets his true love (Elena), but she repeatedly ends up dying on him throughout the series.
  • Celibate Hero: Stefan wasn't romantically involved with anyone for almost 500 years. He didn't fall in love with anyone else after the tragic loss of his first beloved Katherine, believing that he would never love anyone else every again. Until he met Elena and his entire view on love completely changed forever.
  • Chick Magnet: Stefan is irresistible to the opposite sex and he has attracted every single main female character of the series including Elena, Bonnie, Caroline, Meredith and Katherine. Not to mention that he caught the eye of every single female of the entire Robert E. Lee High populous.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Stefan has a strong hero or saviour instinct. He feels the constant need to sacrifice himself, put himself in harms way in order to try to save and protect everyone. If Stefan fails to do so, he will end up harbouring guilt. Stefan's sense of heroism is so extreme at times, that it is seen as extreme martyrdom.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: At the start of the series. Stefan attracted so much female attention when he first arrived at school. But he was completely oblivious to all the girls dying to gain his attention. Not only was Stefan oblivious to all of the girls fawning over him, but he was oblivious about Elena's intense attraction to him. Stefan's obliviousness towards Elena only made her even more determined to be with Stefan.
  • Courtly Love: With Katherine. During the time of the Renaissance, Stefan courted Katherine for possible marriage.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Stefan is a vampire who is powerful with many superhuman abilities. He possesses the gift of immortality. But Stefan views his vampirism as a curse and yearns to be a normal human instead.
  • The Dandy: Stefan is always concerned with his appearance and always likes to look presentable, neat, well-dressed and well put together. Stefan was raised to dress with noble standards due to his nobility and social status as an aristocrat.
  • Dark Secret: The major plot point for Stefan (and Elena). Stefan keeps his deep, dark secret of being a centuries old vampire from Elena...until eventually,Elena does find out who Stefan truly is. Although, Stefan being a vampire isn't Stefan's only dark secret; his mysterious, tragic past is one giant angsting secret as well.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Out of all of the characters in the series, Stefan seems to have suffered the most due to the events surround his dark and mysterious past. Stefan feels guilty and responsible for a lot of the bad things that has happened in his past, even though the events that happened were not even his fault. Because Stefan harbours a lot of guilt, Stefan comes off as incredibly brooding, secretive and mysterious. Much of Stefan's guilt has to do with what happened with Katherine, feeling that he was responsible for her "death", feeling guilty and responsible for his mother's death after he was born and also, killing his brother Damon and completing his transformation into a vampire.
  • Daywalking Vampire: Stefan is able to walk in the sunlight because he wears a special ring with the jewel lapis lazuli.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Stefan has a very dry wit or sense of humour and he can be a bit sarcastic at times.
  • Determinator: Stefan is one of the most determined characters in the series. When he has his mind set on something, someone or on a mission, he NEVER gives up. Stefan will also not give up on people either and will always try to believe the best in people and that people can change if they really want to.
  • Deus Angst Machina: Stefan is the epitome of this trope. Stefan is pretty much always angsting over something, especially something concerning his dark, mysterious past and all the tragedy that he endured during his human life.
  • Deuteragonist: Stefan is the second most important character, with Elena being the protagonist of the series.
  • Devoted to You: Although Stefan has the opposite sex falling at his feet, Stefan only has eyes for Elena.
  • Distressed Dude: Although Stefan is the hero and the protector, sometimes he needs a little saving as well. An example of this is when Stefan is kidnapped and trapped in the Dark Dimension in Shadow Souls. Elena and her friends, including Damon, travel all the way to the Dark Dimension in order to save him from the prison in which he was being held captive.
  • Doom Magnet: Stefan seems to attract a lot of trouble and pain no matter where he goes, hence why he is always so broody and angsty. Even though Stefan tried to leave his dark, tragic past behind him back in his hometown of Florence, Italy and start anew in a small town called Fells Church, Stefan still couldn't escape trouble. After Stefan came to Fells Church, a lot of bad stuff still happened to him. His brother Damon followed him to Fells Church to torment him out of revenge and jealousy; Stefan became the town's suspect for the mysterious murders in Fells Church (even though he was innocent), Katherine, who turned out to be alive, comes back to Fells Church and tries to kill him, Elena and Damon; Stefan experiences Elena dying TWICE (once in The Struggle after she had drowned at Wickery Bridge and another, when Elena sacrifices herself in The Fury to protect Stefan and Damon from Katherine killing them); Stefan is kidnapped and trapped in a horrible prison in the Dark Dimension and nearly dies; Stefan ends up losing his brother Damon after he dies in Midnight; and Elena develops feelings for Damon, which causes a strain in his and Elena's romantic relationship. Those are just a few examples of how much Stefan suffered in the present day. Never mind his tragic past.
  • Driven to Suicide: In Dark Reunion, Stefan wanted to kill himself after Elena's death. Bonnie, Matt and Meredith stopped him and prevented him from doing so.
  • The Dulcinea Effect: Less than a month after Stefan meets Elena, he realizes that he can't live without her.
  • Eerie Pale Skinned Brunet: Stefan has jet black hair with very pale white skin. See Raven Hair, Ivory Skin.
  • Elemental Powers: If Stefan consumes a significant amount of human blood, he can control the weather and the elemental atmosphere. This ability allows Stefan to influence meteorological energy patterns, creating rain, wind, hail, lightning, snow, sleet, fog and temperature changes. And he has a supernatural ability to control and manipulate the elements of air, earth, fire, water, lightning, etc.
  • Exposition of Immortality: Stefan is a centuries old immortal who has lived on Earth since the 14th century. He has been around since the Renaissance Period.
  • Failure Knight: Stefan has not known Elena for very long, but his extreme love, passion and devotion for Elena and protecting her is one of the many core elements of Stefan's character. This is likely because of losing his first love, Katherine.
  • Fangs Are Evil: Stefan developed fangs after he was transformed into a vampire, which are used for feeding on blood of victims.
  • Fatal Attractor: First, his first love Katherine went crazy, sinister and selfish. She followed Stefan all the way to Fells Church in attempts to kill Elena and destroy Stefan in the process. Not to mention that Katherine put Stefan through so much Hell by attempting to kill him and his friends, yet admits to him that she preferred him and loved him much more than Damon.
  • The Fettered: As opposed to his elder, immoral, malevolent brother Damon, Stefan lives by a strong code of morals, values, beliefs and ethics. Stefan has a strong sense of morality, duty and responsibility. He is someone who strongly believes in doing the right thing no matter what. Stefan displayed these same morals and values during his human years.
  • Flat Character: Compared to other characters, like Elena and even Damon, Stefan didn't really change that much as a character over the series.
  • Foil: To his elder brother Damon. Stefan is the "good", moral vampire brother, the opposite of Damon, who is the "bad", immoral vampire brother.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Stefan is the Responsible Sibling to Damon's Foolish Sibling. Stefan is responsible, logical and dutiful and Damon is reckless, impulsive and rebellious.
  • Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: Although Stefan is an immortal capable of being scary, Stefan is an ultra kind, sweet, compassionate and caring vampire with a heart of gold and a hold onto his humanity.
  • Guilt Complex: In the novels, Stefan suffers from a severe case of guilt. In fact, guilt consumes Stefan and he often blames himself for many things regarding his dark, mysterious and troubled past; he even blames himself for things that weren't his fault (like his mother's death after she had given birth to him and also, Katherine's "death").
  • Happily Ever After: For Stefan and Elena. In The Hunters: Destiny Rising, Stefan gets chosen over Damon by Elena as her one true eternal mate. Stefan and Elena happily reunite and look forward to happily spending eternity together after Elena drinks some of the special water from the Fountain of Eternal Life and Youth.
  • Has a Type: Stefan seems to have a habit of falling for blonde-hair and blue-eyed beauties; first, Katherine back in the 14th century and Elena in the 21st century. Katherine and Elena are almost identical physically to each other in terms of features and coloring; (the reason for this is because it turns out that Katherine and Elena are actually half-sisters who share the same birth mother, who was an angel/Guardian) Katherine had pale blonde hair and sapphire blue eyes and Elena has almost the exact same hair color as Katherine (pale blonde hair) and also similar colored eyes (lapis lazuli blue) as Katherine. And both Katherine and Elena are described to have extremely pale, creamy skin. It's safe to say that Stefan's type are fair-skinned, blonde-haired, blue-eyed fragile, delicate, angelic looking beauties.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: Stefan wears black leather jackets, with the collar turned up (that was his trademark, but that was only in the original trilogy).

  • Heroes Prefer Swords: During Stefan's mortal life, he was an aristocratic nobleman who often used swords. Stefan is highly skilled with swords since during his time, sword fighting and fencing was a sport of his time.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Despite all of the good that Stefan does and the fact that he is a hero in his own right, Stefan still doesn't think that he is a good person. He still displays self-loathing traits, despite everyone around him telling him what a good person he truly is. But will Stefan ever believe what his friends say about him? No way. Stefan can never seem to take a compliment.
  • Heroic Vow: After Stefan became an immortal, he made a promise to himself that he would never drink human blood no matter what the circumstances. Because of his no human blood rule, he has managed to live on a strict animal blood diet for 500 years.
  • Heroic Willpower: Stefan fights his urges to kill innocent humans and also, he fights the urge to drink human blood almost on a daily basis.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Matt. Stefan and Matt become very best friends who trust each other whole heartedly. Matt is also undying loyalty to Stefan, despite the fact that Stefan is a vampire.
  • Hidden Depths: There is definitely more to Stefan than what you see. Stefan is a character who is an ocean of secrets.
  • Honor Before Reason: No matter how dark or cynical a situation is, Stefan always chooses to do the right thing no matter what. He sticks by his morals and he never wavers. Opposite of Damon (Revenge Before Reason).
  • Humble Hero: Despite Stefan being heroic, courageous and brave, he isn't cocky about it. He is very down to earth and incredibly humble. Stefan doesn't seem to be driven by the thirst for power and attention when he commits moral or heroic deeds.
  • Hurting Hero: Stefan has been through a lot of pain, guilt and suffering over the course of his life due to his Dark and Troubled Past.
  • I'm a Monster: Stefan has always hated himself because of what he is. He hates being a vampire and thinks that he is a monster who doesn't deserve to be loved.
  • It's All My Fault: Stefan often feels responsible for every bad thing that has happened both in his past and in the present. He always blames himself for things, even for things that aren't or weren't even his fault in the first place (for example, the death of his mother after she had given birth to him. One of the major reasons why Stefan blames himself for his mothers death is because Damon often blamed Stefan for their mother's death since childhood.) This is part of the reason why Stefan is incredibly brooding and guilt-ridden
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: At the start of the series, Stefan wanted to fit in amongst the humans. This was part of the reason why Stefan tried to start a human life as a high school student; the desire to have friends, belong, be normal and fit in after centuries spend in the darkness and in the shadows alone.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Stefan has always yearned to be a normal human again. He is incredibly self-loathing and he hates being a vampire. He is the complete opposite of Damon, who revels in being a vampire. During Stefan's immortal life living in the darkness and in the shadows, Stefan wanted to live amongst humans in the light; he wanted nothing more than to fit in with them and be accepted.
  • Immortality: Stefan is a vampire and therefore, he will live forever without aging. Although Stefan physically looks like a 17 year old teenage boy, he is actually over 500 years old; he is an undead individual who survives on the blood of the living.

Stefan has never killed any human during his 500 years of living due to his strong sense of morals, humanity, purity and goodness. Not even Damon could corrupt him.
  • Insecure Love Interest: In the beginning, Stefan was very insecure about being with Elena, mostly because of his secret identity as a vampire and the fact that Stefan was so incredibly self-loathing, that he felt that he was not worthy of Elena because he felt that he was a monster who was incapable of being loved by anyone.

Even when Elena makes countless mistakes which result from her selfishness, Stefan still repeatedly gives Elena many chances.
  • Love Triangle: Stefan, the hero, is in a love triangle with Elena, the heroine and Damon, the anti-hero/antagonist. The love triangle between Stefan/Elena/Damon is the main storyline or plot of the series. Although, in the love triangle, Stefan and Elena are the main, focal romantic pairing of the series and Damon is the third point of the triangle.
  • Kiss of the Vampire: Stefan often engages in blood sharing with his love interest, Elena. Blood sharing is known to be an intimate and sacred act between the vampire and it's victim and is the equivalent of making love or a sexual act since vampires are impotent. Stefan and Elena often engage in blood sharing in which Stefan bites Elena's neck and takes some of her blood and Stefan feeds Elena his vampire blood in return in order to replenish her after he takes blood from her.

Ghosts: Stefan can't defeat or harm ghosts. However, a ghost has the potential to manifest and send Stefan or any vampire to a place where he or they can't do any more damage\ Religious Symbols: Stefan mentions that religious symbols (crosses and the like) will boost a person's mental resistance tremendously but only if the user truly believes it will protect them.

It has been revealed in "Shadow Souls" that Elena and Stefan bound by the silver cord. Stefan is bound to Elena by a silver cord, which links them together heart-to-heart or soul to soul. This implies that Elena and Stefan are destined soul mates and are each others One True Love. In Vampire Diaries mythology (also used in Secret Circle and Night World), the Soulmate Principle is described as follows:
  • Romantic Vampire Boy: Stefan the vampire is one of the love interests for the series heroine, Elena (with the other main love interest being Damon, who also happens to be a vampire).
  • School Idol: After becoming a student at Robert E. Lee High, Stefan became one of the most popular boys in school. • Sibling Rivalry: Stefan has had this with Damon going back to their human lives. It has been suggested that Damon has a huge hatred towards Stefan because he feels that Stefan was responsible for the death of their mother after her giving birth to Stefan. Damon has always been extremely envious and jealous of Stefan because Stefan got all of the love, attention, respect and affection from almost everyone. On top of that, Stefan was Giuseppe's favored or preferred son over Damon. This only added to the rivalry between Stefan and Damon that had already existed since their early childhood. Aside from the parental favoritism and Stefan being the favorite in general, Stefan and Damon's sibling rivalry was at its peak when they both fell in love with a beautiful German girl who was a vampire, Katherine. Because of their rivalry and competition for her affections, Stefan and Damon ended up literally killing each other and blaming each other over Katherine and her unexpected "death" (which was later discovered to be fake).
  • Sibling Triangle: Stefan is in a love triangle with Elena and his brother Damon. Both Stefan and Damon are in competition for Elena and her affections. Coincidentally, the same thing happened back during their human years in the 15th century with Katherine. However, as of The Hunters: Destiny Rising, Elena has finally chosen Stefan over Damon as her one and only final choice between the Salvatore brothers. So technically, the love triangle between Stefan, Elena and Damon has been resolved.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: With Damon. Stefan and Damon are complete and total polar opposites in terms of personality, outlook, beliefs, and morals. Whereas Stefan is extremely moral, gentle, understanding, benevolent, empathetic, selfless, kind, caring, altruistic, obedient, responsible, noble and compassionate, Damon is immoral, reckless, selfish, careless, impulsive, rebellious, irresponsible, sadistic, cruel, unkind, uncaring and unsympathetic. The two brothers couldn't be more opposite from one another like black/white or night/day. The differences in their personalities is one of the main contributing factors in the centuries old rivalry. See Sibling Rivalry.

He can move and run much faster than people, he has Super Reflexes and super agility: can react much faster and quicker and he is also able to jump or climb with ease. Stefan is able to carry or lift heavy objects with little effort. He can control the mind of any human and influence their thoughts and actions in the process. The only way to prevent Stefan from mind influencing someone is for the human victim to have vervain on them. He will heal almost immediately after any injury. He can do the Shapeshifting: if he consumes a certain amount of human blood, he can shape shift into any animal form. Stefan has transformed into a hawk, eagle and a falcon during the original trilogy after breaking his promise and drinking human blood. All of Stefan's senses are heightened. Stefan is able to see, smell and hear things from a greater distance than normals. Stefan is able to communicate with animals as well as control them if he consumes a certain amount of human blood. If Stefan consumes a significant amount of human blood, he can control the weather and the elemental atmosphere. This ability allows Stefan to influence meteorological energy patterns, creating rain, wind, hail, lightning, snow, sleet, fog and temperature changes. And he's capable of disrupting the reality of one or more things at once. The Illusion is limited, since it uses a short time but because the neutralization of the enemy and does not usually give orders to the victim

  • Tragic Hero: Stefan fits this trope because he is an incredibly tragic figure who has endured much guilt, suffering and pain.
  • Turn the Other Cheek: Even though Damon has spent his existence torturing Stefan and making his life hell, Stefan still consistently tries to believe in Damon and that he can change into a better person. Stefan even admits that though Damon has always hated him since their human lives, he still loves and cares for his elder brother regardless.
  • The Undead: Stefan is an immortal who is incapable of physically aging. He also has the ability of living forever.
  • Unwanted Harem: Stefan had many females wanting to pursue him and gain his attention, therefore he had many girls that wanted to date him. However, Stefan often brushed the girls off and was completely oblivious to their attraction to him. See Oblivious to Love, Clueless Chick-Magnet and Sexy Man, Instant Harem.
  • Vampiric Draining: Stefan is a vampire, therefore, he nourishes himself and lives off of the human life essence (which is blood). Except, Stefan is a vegetarian vampire, so he really nourishes himself from the blood of animals.
  • Vegetarian Vampire: Stefan fit this trope because he is a vampire that lives on a strict animal diet. Stefan mostly feeds on the blood of deer, doves and other forest animals. This is mostly due to Stefan's values and morals and the belief that killing or taking human life for blood is immoral and wrong. Because of Stefan abstinence of human blood, he is a lot weaker than Damon in terms of Power (who lives on a strict human blood diet). Still, despite this, Stefan displays the standard vampire powers and abilities such as super speed, super senses, super strength, mind compulsion, etc.
  • Viral Transformation: Stefan was fed vampire blood by Katherine and then died with the vampire blood in his system. This resulted in a transformation in Stefan's biology. Stefan became a member of the undead by going from a normal, teenage human to transforming into a vampire.
  • Weakened by the Light: Due to Stefan's vampirism, one of his weaknesses is the sunlight. Therefore, Stefan must wear a lapis lazuli ring on his finger at all times in order to protect himself from burning in the sun. However, even though the lapis ring does protect and prevent Stefan from burning, Stefan has mentioned that the sun still weakens him and drains him physically.
  • What Beautiful Eyes!: Stefan's eyes have been described to be green in colour. His eyes are compared to the colour of forest green leaves, emeralds or malachite. Elena has found Stefan's eyes piercing, intense and captivating.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: Often felt this way during the course of his immortal life. Especially because he had endured a lot of grief and pain by losing his first love, Katherine.
  • With This Ring: In The Struggle, Stefan proposes marriage to Elena using Katherine's small lapis lazuli ring, which he had been wearing around his neck on a chain for 500 years. He wore this ring around his neck as a memory of his love and life with Katherine after she had tragically "died".
  • Youngest Child Wins: Stefan is the youngest child between himself and Damon. As the youngest child, it was shown that Stefan was always strongly favored over Damon since their human years. Stefan was always given more love, respect, and attention and everyone (especially Stefan and Damon's father, Conti Di Giuseppe) always strongly preferred or favored Stefan over Damon. Because of this, Damon's jealousy and hatred for Stefan became stronger over the course of both his human and immortal life. Due to Damon's jealousy of Stefan, Damon had made it his life's goal to make Stefan's life a living hell by emotionally, mentally, verbally and physically tormenting, taunting and threatening him.

     Damon Salvatore

Damon is the novel series' anti hero and main antagonist. Damon is Stefan's malevolent elder brother, leading his father to resent him after his mother died. Along with Stefan, he fell in love with a young German girl who was a vampire, Katherine Von Schwarzschild, during his human life and before he was transformed into a vampire in his early twenties. Damon desires to make Elena his Princess of Darkness, offer her the gift of immortality and live in the darkness and shadows for eternity together. However, Elena has repeatedly rejected Damon's wishes and advances, resulting in an angry, jealous and resentful Damon. Elena eventually reciprocates Damon's feelings; however, Elena still chooses her soulmate Stefan over him time and time again.

Tropes associated with Damon include:

  • Abusive Parents: His father Giuseppe, who was physically abusive and violent towards Damon.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Although Katherine and Elena had feelings for Damon, they still didn't feel as strongly for him as they did for Stefan. Damon was always second best. His love for Elena was unrequited for the majority of the series. However, Elena does admit that she has some deep feelings for him in the later books. But still, for the most part, Elena repeatedly chooses Stefan over him.
  • Aloof Big Brother: Subverted. Damon is much more powerful and physically stronger than Stefan due to him living on a strict human blood diet, which helps him gain extra Power. However, despite this, Stefan is still strongly favoured over Damon by everyone as a person. Whereas Stefan is ultra kind, compassionate, caring, empathetic and pure of heart, Damon is the opposite; he is cold, rebellious, sinister, unsympathetic and highly selfish.
  • Always Second Best: Damon has always felt this way about Stefan since their human years. Damon was very jealous of Stefan because he was the popular and favored son over him. Everyone loved Stefan more than him: Their father Conti Di Giuseppe, Katherine, and Elena. Because of the favoritism that Stefan has constantly been given throughout his life, Damon has always felt that he never measured up to Stefan. And because of this, Damon took his jealousy and anger out on Stefan.
  • Always Someone Better: To Damon, as people always seem to admire and respect Stefan more than him.
  • And Now You Must Marry Me: Sort of. Damon tries to coerce Elena plenty of times throughout the series to be with him, normally through the use of threats.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Many times with Elena, especially in the later books. Although Elena does admit she has feelings for Damon, Elena still tells Damon that Stefan is her true love no matter what.
  • The Antagonist: Damon is the main antagonist of the series. He does become more of an anti-hero archetype later on.
  • Anti-Hero: Damon is the immoral, malevolent main character. He is the main antagonist of the story. Damon is also the anti-hero to Stefan's hero.
  • Bad Powers, Bad People: Damon has superhuman abilities as a vampire, but he often doesn't use them for noble deeds or intentions.
  • Bad Samaritan: Whenever Damon seems to helping someone, he often has an not so noble ulterior motive.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Elena. Elena and Damon have a snarky relationship where Elena seems highly annoyed with everything that Damon says or does. This back and forth snarky dialogue between the two is often perceived as sexual UST and tension between Damon and Elena.
  • Big Brother Bully: Towards Stefan. Verbally, physically and emotionally, and he also threatened to kill Stefan on multiple occasions. This has been Stefan and Damon's dynamic ever since their human lives as children.
  • Black Sheep: Damon didn't fit in with his aristocratic family. He was too rebellious and impulsive for a nobleman, while Stefan fit the standards of a proper noblemen (responsible, dutiful, noble, honourable). Giuseppe, his father, would often refer to Damon as a ne'er do well coward.
  • Blood Knight: Damon spent his immortal life being a part of mercenary companies. He engaged in much violence, killing and slaughtering of innocents over the course of his immortal life so that he could drink lots of human blood in order to gain Power.
  • Blue Blood: Like Stefan, he comes from wealth and an aristocratic family.
  • Cain and Abel: The Cain to Stefan's Abel. Damon, The Cain, has hated and has always been jealous of Stefan since childhood for a number of reasons. First, Damon believes that Stefan is responsible for the death of their mother because their mother had died a few years after Stefan's birth. Although this isn't Stefan's fault, Damon blames Stefan for the death of their mother. Damon has always been jealous of Stefan because Stefan was always the favored child, not just with their father Giuseppe, but with everyone else as well. Stefan, who is the Abel, has always been the good, ideal and obedient son who is described to be noble, honorable, good-hearted and pure of heart. Damon, on the other hand, was viewed as the "ne'er do well son, who was rebellious, selfish, sadistic, unkind, uncaring, impulsive, sociopathic and unsympathetic. Out of jealousy, Damon had made it his life's mission to physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually damage and torment Stefan and make his life a living Hell. He has threatened Stefan on numerous occasions and has threatened to kill Stefan. Like Cain did to Abel, Damon did end up killing Stefan during a sword fight after he stabbed Stefan in the heart. This caused Stefan to transform into a vampire.
  • Can't Have Sex, Ever: Although Damon is a highly passionate and lustful person, he is impotent due to being a vampire.
  • The Casanova: Ever since Damon's human years, he has been a player and a womanizer. Instead of taking his education seriously during his human life, Damon spent his time womanizing. Damon is the type of attract women like a moth to a flame, use them to get what he wants and then is likely to dump them afterwards (this seems to be different in regards to Elena though, considering that Damon spends the entire series obsessing over and chasing after Elena).
  • The Chessmaster: Damon is scheming, manipulative, cunning and he'll use others in order to get what he wants.
  • Control Freak: Damon is excessively commanding, dominating and controlling with others, especially towards those who are weaker than he is or appear weaker or more vulnerable than he is (i.e. Stefan and Bonnie).
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Damon is extremely envious and jealous at his core. Ever since childhood, Damon has always been very jealous of his younger brother Stefan, most likely because of their father Giuseppe strongly favoured Stefan over Damon.Or also the fact that Stefan was the sibling who had always received the most love, attention and respect from everyone. Aside from Damon's jealousy of Stefan since their human lives, Damon has always gotten extremely jealous in regards to Elena always choosing Stefan over him. When Elena repeatedly rejects Damon's advances and wishes, Damon not only becomes insanely jealous, he also becomes insanely (and psychopathically) vengeful (especially towards Stefan).
  • Dark and Troubled Past: According to Stefan, Damon suffered emotional and physical abuse from his (and Stefan's) father Giuseppe during childhood.
  • Dating Catwoman: Many of Elena's loved ones disapprove of Elena having any kind of relationship with Damon.
  • Daywalking Vampire: Damon is able to travel in the sunlight because he wears a special ring which contains lapis lazuli stone.
  • Death Equals Redemption: At the end of Midnight, Damon ends up dying by risking himself in order to save Bonnie from falling to her death. This was said to be the beginning of Damon's redemption.
  • Delinquent: Damon is highly rebellious and doesn't follow the rules whatsoever. In fact, he lives by his own rules.
  • Destructive Romance: With both Elena and Katherine. Damon's romance with Katherine ended in tragedy. And he is beyond obsessed with Elena and would threaten, harm or try to kill anyone, including Stefan, who gets in the way of him possessing Elena.
  • Did Not Get the Girl: In Destiny Rising, Elena chooses Stefan over Damon as her final choice. Damon ends up single.
  • Dirty Coward: Damon will often resort to manipulating or hurting others with the use of dirty tricks in order to get whatever he wants.
  • Driven by Envy: Much of Damon's vengefulness is driven by his intense rivalry and jealousy towards Stefan.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Damon was said to be very close with his mother as a human child before she died. Hence why Damon blames Stefan for her death (becasue she died a few years after giving birth to Stefan).
  • Evil Is Petty: At times, Damon does immoral deeds to spite others, namely his brother.
  • Foil: To his younger brother Stefan. Damon is the "bad", immoral, malevolent vampire brother and Stefan is the "good", moral, benevolent vampire brother.
  • Fool for Love: Damon spends the entire series like an obsessed love sick puppy chasing Elena, even though time and time again, she chooses Stefan over him. Damon just doesn't seem to catch a hint.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Damon is the Foolish Sibling to Stefan's Responsible Sibling. Stefan is responsible, logical and dutiful and Damon is reckless, impulsive and rebellious.
  • For the Evulz: He likes to manipulate and torture humans for his own personal pleasure.
  • Freudian Excuse: Was abused by his father.
  • Fully-Embraced Fiend: Unlike Stefan, who despises being a vampire and is incredibly self-loathing, Damon relishes in vampirism and loves the power that comes along with it
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Jealousy and envy is definitely one of Damon's defining fatal flaw as an individual. Damon has always been jealous and envious of Stefan since childhood because of the ongoing favouritism that Stefan received growing up. Damon is a jealous individual at his core and it is one of his major flaws because it normally gets the best of him.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: He has a quick, violent temper and lash outwardly towards others in extreme fury and anger.
  • Handsome Lech: Damon is so good looking but he's a sociopath at the same time. Unfortunately, his personality is the type to scare potential romantic suitors away.
  • Hated by All: In the beginning of the series, EVERYONE either hated or strongly disliked Damon. Even his own brother.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Damon doesn't seem to have much luck in the romance department since any girls tend to choose his brother Stefan over him. Namely Elena.
  • Hollywood Atheist: Although Damon was raised in a Catholic upbringing, it could be assumed that he was never religious whatsoever. Stefan, on the other hand, was strongly religious.
  • Hot-Blooded: Damon is reckless, careless, impulsive, hotheaded, aggressive, quick-tempered and prone to violence.
  • If I Can't Have You…: Damon often threatened Elena that if she didn't choose him over Stefan, he would harm or kill Stefan.
  • Immortality: Damon is a vampire and therefore, he will live forever without aging.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Damon appears to be arrogant, vain and egotistical, but deep down, he has always felt like he was incompetent. Damon has always felt like he has lived in Stefan's shadow since his human life.
  • It's All About Me: Damon is a highly selfish and self-centered character who thinks that the world begins and ends with him.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Only at the very end of the series does Damon finally accept that Elena will always love and choose Stefan no matter what.
  • Greed: Damon almost always has a desire to possess things or take things away from others. Damon is not a contributor, he is primarily a taker. He is selfish and he will have a desire to take things that other people possess. Stefan comments that Damon never contributed to society or to their town of Florence; he never fulfilled any duties and responsibilities. Instead, he just wanted everything that came to him without ever earning it.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Being the total opposite of his younger brother Stefan, Damon is described to be sadistic, impulsive, selfish, arrogant, vain, manipulative, dangerous, reckless and unsympathetic. But, on occasion, Damon can be also loyal and capable of affection with a very select few of people, like Stefan, Elena, and especially Bonnie.
  • Just Friends: With Elena as of the final book of the series, as Elena chose Stefan over Damon.
  • Lack of Empathy: Oh boy, Damon is sociopathic in nature and he rarely, if ever, shows any genuine compassion and empathy for others. Complete opposite of Stefan, who is Mr. Empathetic. The only person whom Damon will show any kind of true, genuine and real compassion for is Bonnie. Hell, he even cried in Midnight when Bonnie was kidnapped.
  • Lazy Bum: Damon was an aristocrat which called for duty and responsibility, but instead, he was seen as a "ne'er do well" coward by his father and by the town of Florence because he would constantly shake off duty and responsibility. Instead, he spent his time indulging in self pleasure such as womanizing, drinking, jousting, sword-fighting, and hunting and hawking.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Inherited many of his father, Giuseppe's personality traits, namely Giuseppe's temper.
  • Living Forever Is Awesome: The opposite of Stefan. Damon revels in vampirism, being immortal, and being powerful.
  • Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places: Damon doesn't do the serious romance thing. Instead, he's into having multiple women chase him.
  • Love Hungry: Damon did everything in order to convince Elena that she belongs with him over Stefan due to his obsession with her and also, his obsession with "winning" over Stefan.
  • Love Redeems: Damon having feelings for both Elena and Bonnie had an affect on him transforming into a much nicer person.
  • Love Triangle: First, between himself, Stefan and Katherine. Second, with himself, Stefan and Elena. Damon loses when Elena chooses Stefan over him in the final book.
  • Lust: Damon is a womanizer and therefore, goes through tons of women at a time. This implies that sexual pleasure is on the top of his needs.
  • The McCoy: In the main trio consisting of himself, Stefan and Elena. Damon is The McCoy (Id), Stefan is The Spock (Superego) and Elena is The Kirk (Ego). Unlike Stefan, who is logical, stoic and practical and Elena, who is more neutral, Damon is more impulsive, reckless and rebellious. Although, instead of Damon doing the right thing in general, Damon is more about doing what's right for him.
  • Narcissist: Damon is very proud and vain. Most of this has to do with Damon having Adonis-like good looks. He often uses his good looks to get what he wants.
  • The Nicknamer: Damon has nicknames for the characters including Elena (Princess of Darkness, Princess), Stefan (St. Stefan, Hero Stefan, Noble Stefan, Brother, Little Brother), Bonnie (Redbird, Little Redbird, Fiery Little Fury, Songbird, Baby Bird, Little Witch, Little Redhead, Maiden, Little Human, Kitten), and Matt (Mutt).
  • Noble Demon: Only in the later books. Damon originally starts out as an extremely antagonistic and villainous character. However, Damon does soften up a bit later on.
  • Pretty Boy: Damon is described to be extremely gorgeous with handsome features, high cheekbones, and a cruel mouth. He has straight, fine, black hair, black eyes the color of the midnight sky, and very pale complexion. Damon is said to strongly resemble his younger brother Stefan die to family relation, although Damon's features are much more masculine and angular than Stefan's. Stefan's facial features are more soft and boyish yet masculine.
  • The Proud Elite: Damon is handsome, rich, powerful and he comes from an aristocratic and wealthy background. He also tends to look down on others and feels that he is much better than they are. Damon comes off as cold, arrogant, selfish and uncaring.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Damon has similar coloring to Stefan. He has jet black hair, black eyes, and a very pale complexion.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Damon is over 500 years old. He has been around since the fifteenth century.
  • Red Baron: Damon has given himself the nickname "Prince of Darkness".
  • Revenge Before Reason: Damon lives on revenge. Everything that he has done has been to get back at his brother. Complete opposite of Stefan (Honor Before Reason).
  • Romantic False Lead: For Elena. Stefan is Elena's soulmate but Damon helps to provide tension between Stefan and Elena. Much of Damon's purpose in the love triangle is to create an obstacle for Stefan and Elena and to test Stefan and Elena's love and relationship. Stefan and Elena's love wins out in the end when Elena chooses Stefan as her final choice.
  • Romantic Runner-Up: To Stefan for Elena. In the final book of The Vampire Diaries novel series, Destiny Rising, Elena chooses Stefan over Damon as her one and final choice to be her eternal partner and mate.
  • Sensitive Guyand Manly Man: Damon is the Manly Man to Stefan's Sensitive Guy. While Damon is more strong, impulsive, passionate and aggressive, Stefan is more gentle, sensitive, empathetic and compassionate.
  • Sibling Rivalry: With Stefan. Damon was always jealous of him and hated him since their childhood.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: With Stefan.
  • Stalker with a Crush: On Elena. He spends most of the series trying to pursue her and steal her away from Stefan out of jealousy and revenge against him.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: To Stefan. Both Bonnie and Elena have commented on how Damon looks very physically similar to Stefan due to family relation.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Of the core group of Elena, Stefan, Matt, Meredith and Bonnie. Damon occasionally helps out the group in a mission or battle when he feels like it..or if he knows he'll get something in return.
  • Tragic Bromance: Both of them ended up killing each other over Katherine because of their intense rivalry.
  • Tragic Villain: Somewhat. Even though Damon is the primary antagonist of the series, the reader gains a better understanding of why Damon turned out the way that he is. Damon's mother died when he was young, and he was physically and emotionally abused as a child by his father, which could have had a huge effect on how Damon turned out. Not to mention that Damon has always hated Stefan since childhood and Stefan was strongly favoured by everyone over him.
  • Tritagonist: Damon is the third most important characters after Stefan and Elena, whom are both the united protagonists of the story.
  • Uncanny Family Resemblance: Damon is said to strongly physically resemble his younger brother Stefan. This is noted by both Elena and Bonnie.
  • The Un-Favourite: Stefan was the favorite son, especially with his father Giuseppe, who disliked Damon's rebellious behaviour.
  • The Unfettered: Damon doesn't live by morals, nobility and honourability like his younger brother Stefan. In fact, Damon is rather immoral, rebellious and doesn't care about morality and authority.
  • The Undead: Damon is a vampire who is incapable of physically aging. He is also an immortal being who is capable of living forever.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Damon has an extremely violent and quick temper, in which he inherited from his father, Giuseppe. When he loses his temper, he lashes out and has a strong desire to kill; nothing will stop him either. Damon is extremely physically violent and he is sadistic in nature. He has no problem with tormenting and torturing others emotionally, physically, and mentally, especially towards his brother Stefan. Whenever Damon gets angry at Stefan, he threatens to harm and kill him. More than anyone, Stefan seems to be the biggest victim of Damon's anger and violence, ever since their human lives as children.
  • Vain Guy: Damon is highly vain, self-centred, and proud. He is very narcissistic and he depends on his God-like good looks and sex appeal to get what he wants, including women. His pride often prevents him from having decent, healthy relationships with other people (family, friendships and romantic), namely with his brother, Stefan. Because of Damon's excessive vanity and pride, he is also highly stubborn and rebellious; he refuses to follow authority and responsibility.
  • Visionary Villain: Damon always has a goal and an ulterior motive. And he will do anything to make sure he achieves his goal.
  • Was Once a Man: Like Stefan, Damon was once a regular human.
  • We Can Rule Together: Damon to Elena. He wants to make Elena his Princess of Darkness so that they could both be powerful immortals living in the darkness together.
  • Weakened by the Light: If Damon doesn't wear his daylight ring, he will be weakened by the sunlight.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He has no problem with threatening small children, like Elena's younger sister, Margaret.

     Bonnie Mc Cullough
Bonnie is one of Elena's best friends, since they go to school together, along with Meredith. She also ends up competing with her in feelings for Damon — unusual because of her bubbley and cheerful personality, which contrast with Damon's dark brooding, though it turns out she is stronger and braver than she looks.

Tropes associated with Bonnie include:

  • A-Cup Angst: Bonnie often complains about the fact that she is flat chested.
  • Action Girl: Like Elena and Meredith, Bonnie often finds herself in the middle of all of the action.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Most of Bonnie's affectionate nicknames are coined by Damon. Damon's most common pet name for Bonnie is Little Redbird or Redbird.

  • Better as Friends: With Matt. Although Bonnie initially develops a crush on Matt, she realizes that she has more of a platonic connection with Matt than a romantic connection.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She tends to be underestimated because of her lovable, bubbly personality and childlike looks, but she's always brave and willing to help and to protect her friends in dangerous situations. Don't mess with her friends or loved ones. You will regret it and she has strong psychic powers. Bonnie may be sweet, but she is also fiery and emotional
  • The Big Girl: Not in a physical aspect. Although Bonnie is very small and fragile looking, Bonnie is extremely powerful. In fact, Bonnie is just as powerful as Elena and Damon if she really concentrates on using her psychic abilities. She's also the character who displays much more courage and bravery than even Elena and Stefan, who are the heroine and hero of the series respectively. She also contributes to the group and is a highly competent individual.
  • Blessed with Suck: Her psychic abilities are hereditary. However, in the beginning, Bonnie didn't have much control over them and would often faint or pass out due to overusing them.
  • Brainless Beauty: Bonnie is very pretty but doesn't have that much intelligence. She can be quite sharp in other ways though.
  • Break the Cutie: In seems as though Bonnie can never be completely happy since something bad always happens to her or her friends.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Bonnie is known to be highly idealistic and not very grounded or serious in personality. She is seen to be rather shallow and ditzy. However, Bonnie matures and evolves as an individual as the series progresses.

  • The Ditz: Bonnie has a very flighty, shallow and flirty personality. Because of this, people, including all of her friends underestimate her and never take her too seriously.
  • Does Not Know Her Own Strength: Sometimes, Bonnie is completely unaware of how strong her psychic powers are. So much so that she sometimes loses control and passes out from overusing her powers.
  • Fainting: Bonnie frequently faints or passes out after she overuses her strong psychic powers.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: With Damon. Bonnie was the first person whom Damon met when he came to Fells Church. Damon saved Bonnie's life but compelled her to forget their first meeting.
  • The Heart: Even though Elena is the heroine of the series, it is Bonnie who is the one of the core group that often tries to bring everyone together for a common purpose.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With both Elena and especially Meredith. She has been best friends with the both of them since the first grade.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Bonnie is very idealistic and naive, therefore, she doesn't have the best read on people.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: Bonnie has been shown to be a very strong, capable sidekick and is almost always there to help her friends with plans or missions. She is probably the character who contributes the most when it comes to helping out her friends.
  • Genki Girl: Bonnie is extremely hyper, fun-loving, bubbly and energetic.
  • Girly Bruiser: Bonnie is sweet, feminine, cute and adorable but she is not to messed with at the same time.
  • The Ingenue: Bonnie is known to be pure, naive, sweet and innocent, both in physical appearance and in personality. Bonnie is also a virgin and Damon often refers to her as a 'maiden'.
  • In the Blood: Her psychic abilities run in her family, but they skip a generation.
  • Jade-Colored Glasses: Bonnie was originally an overly optimistic idealist. However, as the series progressed, she became much more of a realist. This was a part of Bonnie's character development and growth as a character.
  • Love Martyr: Even though Damon doesn't treat her nicely, Bonnie still strongly cares for Damon no matter what and tries to see the good in him, even if others think the worst of him.
  • The McCoy: Of the trio between herself, Meredith (The Spock) and Elena (The Kirk). Bonnie is the emotional, naive one of the group.
  • Morality Pet: For Damon. Bonnie has been shown throughout the series to bring out the much softer, gentler side of Damon. She basically prevents Damon from committing immoral acts. Bonnie brings out the humanity in Damon much more than Elena ever could or did. Damon is seen to be highly protective of Bonnie because of his soft spot for her.
  • Naïve Everygirl: Bonnie is the epitome of naive. She is a true idealist and romantic at heart and basically has her head in the clouds, especially in the beginning. Bonnie seemed to have lacked depth during the beginning of the series and came off as a boy crazy, shallow character. Bonnie is also insecure and feels like she is never as good enough as Elena or even Meredith. The biggest quality that makes Bonnie stand out is her pure, good heart.
  • Nice Girl: Bonnie is the classic sweet girl who is kind and caring towards everyone.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Bonnie is obsessed with darkness and morbidity. She frequently romanticizes death and talks about how she is going to die constantly. Bonnie also has dark fantasies about being strangled by a guy.

  • The Pollyanna: Bonnie is incredibly optimistic and upbeat even if she is facing serious trouble.
  • Purity Personified: Bonnie is frequently described as being pure and innocent. She is pretty, kind, caring and the epitome of kindness and goodness.
  • Psychic Powers: Because of Bonnie's ancestry, Bonnie is a psychic and therefore, possesses powerful psychic abilities. Bonnie doesn't like her psychic powers due to the fact that when she overuses them, she sometimes falls unconscious, faints or blacks out but when asked by Honoria Fell, she decides to keep them and she tries to use them as well as her late Grandma in Scotland had used them. Bonnie is terrified of her strong abilities and powers and what she is capable of doing with them, fearing that her powers might control her rather than the other way around. Bonnie tends to pass out after her visions and has yet to show any real usage of her power. Bonnie is also a very capable practitioner of witchcraft and magic, as she was able to use magic to track down Stefan Salvatore and to summon a spirit after Elena's death. She may or may not be considered a witch, but it's most likely that she is considered a psychic and practitioner of magic.
  • Smarter Than You Look: At first, Bonnie appears to be ditzy, shallow and unintelligent. But as the series goes on, Bonnie proves that she can be rather quick, competent and smart.
  • Survivor Guilt: Bonnie felt extremely guilty that Damon had died in Midnight by saving her life.
  • Teens Are Short: Bonnie is a teenager, but she is frequently mistaken for a child, because of her petite stature.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In the later books, Bonnie learns to control her powers and becomes more powerful in the process.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Bonnie is extremely idealistic and doesn't have much awareness regarding the harsh reality. She prefers to constantly see the good in every situation and in every person. She is highly optimistic and is almost always positive about everything, even if the reality of the situation looks really bad.
  • Will They or Won't They?: Often played with between Damon and Bonnie. There was always an implication that there were deep romantic feelings shared between the two but the reader was always left questioning if Damon and Bonnie would ever take their relationship to the next level. Unfortunately, for the Bamon shippers, they don't. The ghostwriter completely retcons their relationship and makes Bonnie end up with Zander instead. Damon ends up single after Elena chooses Stefan.

     Meredith Sulez
Meredith is the third young woman in the central female trio. Unlike Bonnie and Elena, who she has been friends with since childhood, Meredith does not care for Damon and isn't impressed by his charms, though she is attracted to Stefan.

Tropes associated with Meredith include:

  • Action Girl: Like all of the other female characters, Meredith often finds herself amidst all of the action. Let's not forget that Meredith is also a badass vampire slayer.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She is tall, brunette and she is intensely cool and logical. Sometimes she can come off as aloof to others. In fact, Meredith is the only person who is not turned on by Damon's charms. She is the only character in the series who actually "scares" Damon.
  • Badass Normal: Meredith is badass but she possesses no special powers and abilities. She is a normal human girl.
  • Big Sister Instinct: To Bonnie. Although they are the same age, Meredith treats Bonnie as a younger sibling and is highly protective of her.
  • Brainy Brunette: Meredith is highly intelligent, smart and capable and she is known as the brains in her circle of friends. She is probably the smartest female character in the entire series, even more so than Elena.
  • Brutal Honesty: Meredith is normally the one to call Elena out on her actions. She often hits Elena in the face with logic and honesty.
  • The Comically Serious: Can be witty and humorous, but often does it with a straight face.
  • The Cynic: Meredith is often described to be a bit of a pessimist, but in reality, Meredith is just a realist who sees things and situations for what they are.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Meredith can be quite snarky and spunky when she wants to be and she possesses a dry sense of humour.
  • Emotionless Girl: Meredith appears to be rather emotionless and stoic in most instances. She is more methodical, practical and strategic than Elena and Bonnie, who are more passionate and emotional.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: Meredith is the tallest girl between herself, Elena and Bonnie. She is much taller than Elena and basically towers over Bonnie, who is really, really petite.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: Meredith has proven that she is extremely competent in regards to planning. She is always there to help her friends, especially Elena. She often offers much to the group due to her intelligence, practicality and logical thinking.
  • Long-Lost Relative: In Midnight, Meredith discovers that she has a long lost brother named Cristian.
  • Mama Bear: Mostly to Bonnie. Meredith is highly protective of Bonnie, especially because Bonnie is so fragile and over exerts herself at times with the use of her psychic powers.
  • Nerves of Steel: Meredith always remains and calm and stoic, even in times of trouble.
  • Only Sane Man: Out of everyone in the group, she's the only one who seems to live on common sense and logic.
  • Pragmatic Heroine: The most pragmatic and logical of the core group.
  • The Reliable One: Meredith is often the one Elena depends on in terms of advice and planning. She is the brains of the group and she conducts most of the research and co-ordinates all of the planning. Anyone can depend on Meredith to be there when they need her for anything.
  • Secret Identity: In Midnight, Meredith reveals herself to be a vampire hunter-slayer.
  • Sour Supporter: Meredith will often engage in Elena's plans or schemes, even if she doesn't agree with how Elena plans to go about it. For example, Elena made Meredith and Bonnie promise to join her in the mission to get Stefan to be with Elena. Meredith was reluctant at first, but eventually decided to help Elena afterwards.
  • The Spock: Of the trio between herself, Elena (The Kirk) and Bonnie (The McCoy). Meredith is the most logical, practical one of the trio.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Meredith is described to be very tall, taller than average height Elena and towering over ultra petite Bonnie.
  • The Stoic: Meredith is known for not showing that much emotion. She is rather calm, cool and logical, even aloof.
  • Straight Man: Even when Meredith cracks a joke or is being humorous, she remains rather serious.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Meredith can be sweet but she can also be rather aloof and icy. It all depends on the person.
  • The Smart Girl: Meredith is the most logical, intelligent and practical of her inner group.
  • Unkempt Beauty: Elena has said that Meredith doesn't wear that much makeup, because she doesn't really need it.
  • Vampire Hunter: In The Return trilogy, Meredith reveals that he destiny is to be a vampire hunter/slayer since birth.

     Matthew "Matt" Honeycutt
Matt is the typical human 18-year-old 'All-American' boy-next-door, who was the high school star quarterback on the schools football team, as well as being Elena's first love — indeed, he is heartbroken when she goes to Stefan. He is also, however, fiercely loyal to his friends and supports Elena and co. in college.

Tropes associated with Matt include:

  • Academic Athlete: Matt is academic and a star athlete. He was the star quarterback of his high school football team and even received a scholarship to go to college.
  • The All-American Boy: Matt is blond, attractive, clean cut and a star athlete. He's the classic all American (nice) guy.
  • Better as Friends: With Elena and Bonnie. Matt had romantic relationships with both Elena and Bonnie. However, even though Matt still harbored feelings for Elena after they broke up, he started to accept that he and Elena were much better off as just being friends. Matt also dates Bonnie briefly, but also realizes that he and Bonnie are just friends.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: To Elena. Although Elena and Matt break up, Matt is still in love with Elena and believes that there might have been a chance for the two of them to get back together, even though Elena developed a romantic relationship with Stefan.
  • The Generic Guy: Matt is the just the nice human guy who is loyal to all of his friends. He doesn't possess any superhuman abilities and has no special mission or destiny that awaits him.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Matt has a jealous streak. He was intensely jealous of Stefan and his growing relationship with Elena. Eventually, he became very accepting and supportive of Stefan and Elena and became Stefan's best friend.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Matt is blond haired; he possesses extremely noble qualities such as kindness, compassion, selflessness and understanding. Matt is a genuinely good-hearted person whose heart is ultimately in the right place.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Stefan. Matt forms a strong bond and becomes best friends with Stefan at the start of the books. Matt is the one who makes Stefan feel welcome and comfortable amongst the humans. Matt and Stefan are so close that Matt is even okay with the fact that Elena is in love with Stefan; he even supports the two of them being together because he believes that Stefan is a good person at his core, despite what he is.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Despite the fact that Matt was still in love with Elena after they broke up, Matt still supported Elena in her mission in being with Stefan. In the end, Matt only wanted what was best for Elena, even if it wasn't him.
  • Like Brother and Sister: With Bonnie. Although Matt has always felt a degree of affection for Bonnie and even pursued a romance with Bonnie briefly in Dark Reunion, Matt sees his relationship with Bonnie as more platonic in nature. He has a "big brother" instinct with Bonnie (even though they are the same age) and is highly protective of her, especially when it comes to Damon.
  • Lovable Jock: Matt is the star quarterback on the high school football team but he is not at all a jerk. He is the opposite of Tyler Smallwood, who is a Jerk Jock.
  • Nice Guy: Matt is sweet, kindhearted, caring, sensitive and understanding. He is also protective and loyal to those whom he loves and cares about. Don't expect Matt to ever back stab or betray a friend; it simply isn't in his nature to do so.
  • Non-Action Guy: Although he is capable, he's normally not heavily involved in the intensity of all of the action that takes place. He does what he can to support everyone and help.
  • Only Friend: Originally, to Stefan. Matt was the very first person to befriend Stefan, who was a new transfer student.
  • Only Sane Man: Out of everyone in the series, it seems that Matt is the only one who is really aware of all the things happening around him being incredibly unusual.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: His best friend Stefan is rich, very handsome, a top student, a star athlete and a vampire with superhuman abilities. Not to mention that Stefan is with the most beautiful girl in all of Fells Church, who just happens to be Matt's ex (Elena). Although Matt isn't an underachiever by any means, he still feels overshadowed by Stefan in comparison.
  • Parental Abandonment: Not much is known regarding Matt's parents or if they are even a part of his life. He seems to spend most of his time with his grandparents on their farm.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Elena. Even though Matt still had unresolved feelings for Elena after they broke up, he still remained her close friend. Matt also remained very loyal to Elena and was always supportive of her.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Matt is the Blue to Stefan's Red. Although Matt and Stefan seem to have similar temperaments, Matt is still much more calm and level headed than Stefan, who can be capable of being more intense and losing his cool at times.
  • Ridiculously Average Guy: Matt is the star quarterback who is a good looking, clean cut boy next door, but he doesn't stand out like his best friend Stefan.
  • Shipper on Deck: Interestingly, for Stefan and Elena. Even goes as far as to tell Stefan that he and Elena are destined and meant to be.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Stefan. Although Stefan is a vampire, Matt still sticks by Stefan when Stefan is accused of being the town murderer. Matt is also strongly loyal to all of his friends and will never betray any of them.
  • Unfazed Everyman: With all of the unusual events surround him plus, his own friends being supernatural beings, Matt still seems completely unfazed by it all. He just accepts it like it is no big deal. Hell, his best friend Stefan is a 500 year old vampire, yet it didn't stop him from being close with him.

     Caleb Smallwood

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Caleb is the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Smallwood. When he was twelve, his father allowed his brother's son (his paternal cousin), Tyler, to stay with them for a short period of time. A few years later, in 1986, both Mr. Smallwood and his wife died. Later Caleb moved to Fell's Church, at home of his uncles, in early summer, after the "disappearance" of his cousin Tyler, following the fight against Klaus. Suddenly, he finds himself having memories of two conflicting realities (one that was real, and one that was made up of fake memories implanted by the Guardians). The reason he retains his real memories is because he is supernatural (not just a dormant werewolf, but also some kind of spellcaster). He sees newspaper articles depicting each reality as well, and determines from them that Elena and her friends know what has happened and why his memories are so conflicting. Hoping that they also know where Tyler is, Caleb begins doing yard work for aunt Judith, hoping to get closer to Elena so that she will tell him everything. Physically, Caleb had shaggy, dark blond hair and blue eyes. He was pale, short and weighed very little, prompting him to use a glamour to make himself seem desirable when approaching Elena.

  • Parental Abandonment: Caleb has lost both of his parents.
  • Something about a Rose:
    • In Phantom, Caleb gives Elena a rose that he had "found" on a porch which might have been linked to the spell that he had cast. It turns out that he had given the rose to Elena in attempts to find out where Tyler had went.
    • The rose in which Caleb gave to Elena was indeed used to destroy the Phantom of Jealousy; the phantom that had been feeding on the jealous of the entire group.

His features were sharply cut, the eyebrows arched, the cheekbones high, but his mouth was soft and sensual. He has pure white-blond hair. He is literally Tyler's opposition or another werewolf infected, since they can not control the savagery and anger due to their wolfish nature.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Zander may be approachable and friendly, but don't mess with him, his friends, his pack or Bonnie.
  • Mysterious Animal Senses: Because Zander is an original werewolf, his animal senses by far exceed those of a regular werewolf.

  • Really 700 Years Old: Zander physically looks like a college boy, but he is actually centuries old.
  • Superpower Lottery: As a werewolf, Zander has many powers and abilities. He possesses Super Senses and has heightened, animalistic senses which allows him to hear, see, and smell better than humans. She is able to do Shapeshifting as he is able to shapeshift from his human form, to a half human, to a half wolf beast form at will. It is implied that werewolves like Zander are able to transform into "real" wolves. Zander is very fast and he moves with animal-like quickness in any form. He has Animalistic Strength as he is insanely strong in terms of abnormal strength; he, like all werewolves, can easily tear human and animals to pieces.

She was attacked by Katherine, and that caused her to go insane and she accused Elena of it. Then she is accused of killing Sue because she relapsed after her death and she was the only one present.
