    A-I
  • Absurd Phobia:
    • Admits that copy printers make her uneasy - particularly the way paper crumples up when they jam, and the sound they make when that happens.
    • She has developed one to Gura following their first interaction on Minecraft where Gura's prank goes wrong and resulted in Gura accidentally killing Mumei. From that point onwards Mumei is terrified to borderline PTSD levels whenever she sees the Ender Dragon head that Gura likes to wear. This has faded over time when she and Gura properly talked and collabed, becoming fairly good friends.
    • As revealed during her playthrough of Resident Evil 7, balloons popping. The birthday puzzle sends her into hysterics when she encounters the balloon room.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: During a superchat stream, after she laments not having a good comeback to a laconic red superchat, another red superchat jokes out that Mumei doesn't have comebacks because owls are non-migratory birds. Mumei is left speechless.
Mumei: In this moment I feel like I want to give you $100!
  • Adaptational Curves: While Mumei is depicted rather modestly in her Live2D model and associated official character art, but in holoweEN episode 3 — which she's depicted more animalistic and monstrous — her legs and hips are far bigger than usual, which both Mumei and Fauna took notice of.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Has a few.
    • She's called "MeiMei" by Fauna, Sana, and Bae, the latter of whom also calls her "Mumei-shi".
    • Calli also calls her Kyawatori note  (counterpointing her nickname for Kiara, Kusotori).
    • Gura refers to her as "Moom", coined as part of a goofy portrait of Mumei drawn on a Passpartout stream, which would later be adopted by the Hoomans as well.
  • The Ageless: Her age is listed as just "??????", due to her forgetting her exact age. Given the trends of of the rest of the Council, she's likely as old as recorded civilization. note
  • Angrish: When frustrated, Mumei turns a screeching Motor Mouth and blends words together.
  • Animal Motifs: Officially, Mumei is themed after an owl (specifically a barn owl by her own admission, although the tufts of feather on her head are typically more characteristic of true owls instead), but the fandom also likes to compare her to the kiwi bird in the same vein as Nene being referred to as a seal, which has somewhat become a thing among Hololive after members like Reine and Sana started calling her one.
  • Apologises a Lot: Mostly tied to her forgetfulness.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: The "Dan Dan" video shows Mumei happily causing disasters through history. The Bubonic Plague, sinking the Titanic, destroying Atlantis, Kronii's traumatic moment where the ice cream truck drove away— all of which she just smiles and lets happen. Not returning a shopping cart to the corral in the parking lot? Now she's furious.
  • Ascended Fangirl: Mumei reveals her oshi before joining Hololive was in fact Korone. Getting to finally meet Korone during the 2021 sports festival was a huge fangirl moment for Mumei and a dream come true.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: While she has admitted to having a small attention span, it's most evident in her Minecraft streams when no one else is keeping her on track; she'll go for any coal to mine, berries to gather, or animals to hunt, often overlooking any risks in doing so.
  • Badass Boast: She gives a surprising one when Kronii asks why she's such a daredevil.
Mumei: I fear nothing and nobody.
  • Bedsheet Ghost: She went as one for Halloween 2021, claiming that she accidentally died and came back as a ghost. During the Meme Review, she considered the comparison between "Boomei" and Medjed possibly being more than a coincidence.
  • Been There, Shaped History:
    • Implied. She has stated that "Nanashi Mumei" is neither her first nor her only name, just the most recent one she remembers, and she has been shepherding human civilization for thousands of years. Her portfolio also happens to be largely congruent with that of Athena. This suggests that Mumei may have inspired or been mistaken for at least one prominent goddess from human history.
    • During the Council game show, she mentioned she was collecting fleas for "something" in the year 1346, the same year that The Black Death devastated Europe, shaping a lot of modern civilization.
    • The "Dan Dan" video shows that Mumei was also the cause of the sinking of the Titanic and the destruction of Atlantis. She was also seen holding a bottle of ethanol in front of the Challenger shuttle as it is exploding in the original video; as ethanol breaks down rubber and the rubber o-rings are part of why the shuttle failed, it's implied she intentionally caused the disaster by sabotaging its internals with the bottle. This was not the intent of animator Kanauru, however, and when it was brought to his attention, the video was taken down and replaced with one that left this scene out.
  • Berserk Button: Don't send her superchats as "ticket purchases" for her Karaoke streams. They are free. Repeat offenders will be smacked with a gavel.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She is noted to have one of the biggest gap moe out of the EN girls. Despite her sweet and somewhat timid demeanor, she can be pretty intimidating when she wants to, particularly because she never loses her usual smile and chipper tone even when saying threatening remarks or committing acts of extraordinary violence.
    • Kronii in her first Hollow Knight stream remarked on a case where she snapped. The nature of said case has never been elaborated on.
    • Mumei is revealed to be quite proficient at Apex. During her first Apex collab with Bae and Ollie, Mumei immediately racked up the highest amount of kills.
    • Her artwork can get pretty demented, with this particular portrait in Passpartout being the most infamous example. Said piece of art has been used as a Jump Scare, startling Bae during hololive EN's Halloween collab and various members of the Japanese branch as part of Mumei's special skill in HoloCure, with Matsuri getting the worst of it.
  • Bilingual Bonus:
  • Birds of a Feather: To Gura, with many noticing just how similar the two girls are. Both of them started off as The Cutie of their generation, before showing off a Beware the Nice Ones side of less Seiso behavior. Both also have tendencies of being airheaded and forgetful, with many strange living habits. It’s even to the point where their voices sound similar and they can impersonate one another.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: When Mumei and Kronii collab together, Mumei doubles down on her Cloudcuckoolander and Troll habits while Kronii is The Comically Serious and Enraged by Idiocy.
  • Breaking Old Trends: She is the first and only HoloBird to not have a different species attributed to her by the fandom. It took Reine and Sana comparing her to a kiwi for something to take, yet most of her listeners are content to continue calling her an owl. She also doesn't mind being called a kiwi because she thinks they're cute. During the first HoloTori collab, where all the other bird girls stated their actual bird species while denying their meme bird species, Mumei's response was “I am an owl, not a TOWLnote .
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Will sometimes clarify when she's actually forgotten something as opposed to playing out her Forgetful Jones gimmick.
  • Brick Joke: During September 2021, Bae decided to prank call Mumei by wishing her Happy Birthday when it wasn’t, not for Mumei to gaslight Bae by pretending she was actually fooled. A year later in August when it actually was Mumei’s birthday, Bae and Mumei bring this up again with Bae first asking Mumei if she was sure it was her birthday, before the birthday call-in where Mumei claimed it wasn’t her birthday when Bae dropped by to wish this for her.
  • …But He Sounds Handsome: Inverted Trope. During the Ministry collab stream, there was a moment where Mumei's voice changer briefly turned off for whatever reason, revealing her own voice. While the other boys thought Mumei sounded cute, Muman himself described Mumei as sounding "ugly".
  • Carnivore Confusion: Being an owl girl, Mumei at times makes comment that lets others know that she still views her fellow idols like Bae as a viable meal if she's hungry enough.
  • Child Hater: Has gone on record calling children Civilization's worst invention.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: To Bae. After Mumei discovered Bae had acquired a roommate in Minecraft named Mason (a random NPC Villager), Mumei immediately become hostile towards Mason, tried to convince Bae to leave him, and expressed desires to remove or kill him.
  • Covert Pervert: Normally content to just tease with not-so-Innocent Innuendo, but her sponsored stream of Blue Archive brought out a different side of her. Prior to that, there was the Scary Movie watchalong with IRyS. She has also confessed to being a casual browser of lewd fanart of her gen-mates, or as she calls it, being an "anatomy enjoyer."
  • Crazy Cat Lady: Self-admitted Crazy Fox Lady in Minecraft. Her room is filled with an ever-increasing amount of free-roaming snow foxes. This is probably related to them sharing her Trademark Favorite Food.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Implied. Her debut showed a page out of her notebook with entries about the other EN members, two of them explicitly about how to deal with a shark and a phoenix.
  • Creepy Souvenir: The pair of feathers at the top of her head are not natural parts of her body, but accessories that she wears for intimidation. One has to wonder who was the unfortunate victim she took them from.
Mumei: Oh these? These feathers aren't actually pinned in my head. They're my trophies, that I wear...as a warning.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Despite her ditzy and cutesy demeanor, Mumei is secretly a force to be reckoned with.
  • Cute and Psycho: Her cute demeanor belies a killer spirit that is not unlike Suisei. Fans got a glimpse in her art streams and a full display in the EN Dead by Daylight collab when it was her turn to hunt, where she went full Psychopathic Womanchild as she maimed and killed her genmates while giggling like a kid on Christmas. It doesn't detract from her cuteness.
Mumei (commenting on Kiara's "Vampire" music vid): I am good at making blood, you can have some!
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: Zigzagged as while normally soft-spoken, she can get pretty loud if agitated enough.
  • Cute Owl: Both Mumei and her owl mascot look precious.
  • The Cutie: Mumei embodies this more than any girl of her generation, being kind, soft-spoken, a bit forgetful, and somewhat more innocent than her peers. Her fanbase, genmates, and senpais fall straight into Cuteness Proximity around her, to the point where when she visits the Council's other streams, they tend to forget what they're doing to fawn over her. Even Kronii, who is normally cool and aloof, has a tendency to melt in her presence. Her Halloween costume for 2021 (a Bedsheet Ghost) causes even Ame to fawn over her, even though Ame was the one who designed it in the first place. Mumei even manages to fawn over herself when it comes to fangames like Mumei no Toshi and HoloCure.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Mumei can be amazingly deadpan and is prone to snarkily Lampshade Hanging and Breaking the Fourth Wall.
  • Deity of Human Origin: While Mumei is neither a god nor a human who ascended to godhood, she does represent a founding concept that was established by human society, while the rest embody aspects of nature and physics. Her bio makes a reference to this, with her being the only Council member to have not been created by the Gods.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": The bag friend remains with No Name Given because "my friend" is easier to remember. It also has "friend" written on it in runes. She also has a dog named... "Animal".
  • Dissonant Serenity:
    • While playing Iron Lung the ambient creepy noises barely affect her, and she's more focused on piloting the sub without crashing. When the monster attacks at the end of the playthrough, instead of being spooked by its Jump Scare, she's just irritated that the sub was destroyed before laughing at her journey's abrupt end.
    • The "Dan Dan" mv has Mumei singing a cheerful and cute song while blissfully causing and enjoying Hololive-themed equivalents to momentous events in human history such as: The Black Death, the sinking of the Titanic, and the destruction of Atlantis.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: She does not like being called a "Towl" (Toxic Owl). Popped up during an Overwatch stream where she mentioned to the other other EN girls that the Hoomans started calling her "Fowl" for "Funny Owl". The girls then started calling her "Towl" to reflect her toxic behavior.
  • Fangirl:
    • She doesn't want to single any of her EN senpai out as a favorite, but mentions watching Ina's streams the most.
    • She shared to Sana that Korone is both the first Hololiver she's ever seen and her oshi.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Directly remarked in her debut when talking about her outfit, which has asymmetrical stockings. She then thanks her papa for giving her a fashionable outfit.
  • The Fool: Prone to running into danger or causing mischief with cheerful obliviousness, especially when paired with Kronii. Things generally work out for her though.
  • Forgetful Jones: Her defining characteristic is that she can't remember what she just said moments earlier, and despite being the avatar of Civilization, has forgotten most of what Humanity has ever accomplished. Forgetting things is one of her dislikes. She does remember that she was at one point quite intelligent and not as forgetful in the past, but has had her memory weakened over the ages.
  • Forgot Their Own Birthday: Bae made a Prank Call to Mumei during her Rimworld stream (September 24) hoping this would be the case. Mumei played along with it so well, after she started wondering if she Really Was Born Yesterday, Bae was incredibly confused. Since then, every year Bae has followed up wishing Mumei Happy Birthday on this date, causing further confusion from Mumei.
  • For the Evulz: Played for Laughs. She quotes the trope image provider, in that many of her acts of spreading chaos in games is because she wants to watch the world burn.
  • Freaky Is Cool: Mumei is like Botan in that, not only is she completely unfazed from horror games, she gets excitement from buddying up with someone vulnerable to scares.
  • The Gadfly: A lot of her forgetfulness is actually her Obfuscating Stupidity where she feigns forgetfulness to mess with people. She also sometimes enjoys unsettling people with Freaky Is Cool behavior and/or creepy remarks.
    • When Bae tried to prank her by pretending it was Mumei's birthday, Mumei plays along making Bae think she did actually believe it was her birthday and had forgotten. Bae is left utterly confused on if Mumei is being genuine or not.
    • She enjoys occasionally provoking Kronii's Obsessively Organized tendencies in Minecraft, such as by planting plants in the wrong field, deliberately un-organizing her sorted chests again, hopping around in her fields or replacing the blocks in her living space with blocks of a slightly different color. Not to mention planting berries everywhere.
    • During Calli's tea party stream, she outright admitted that she likes making provocative or nonsensical statements without the elaboration required to make them easier to swallow, just to see how people will react.
  • Goroawase Number: Na-na-shi Mumei released a special merchandise set in celebration of reaching 774k subscribers.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Bae, with it being stated several times that the two of them are best friends. Though at times, Mumei makes some not-so-subtle implications that her feelings towards Bae are more than just friends. The irony of them being an owl and rat is not lost on them.
  • Hidden Buxom: While not completely downplaying her bustline, removing her cape shows that she's nicely sized with her shirt having a Cleavage Window.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Despite being a forgetful Nice Girl compared to the far more forceful and assertive personalities of her genmates, the opening to her debut stream has her go over the major events of Sana, Fauna, and Kronii's debuts, specifically pointing out their flaws, and especially how they negatively affect humanity (Sana's impulsivity and power resulting in her destroying the Earth, Fauna's Yandere tendencies towards mankind hindering their development, noting that history occurred naturally despite Kronii being asleep since before the Big Bang), showing that she very much takes her role as Guardian of Civilization seriously and isn't amused by the issues her genmates have caused for humans. And the way she speaks about them, saying things like "these beings" and "us little folks", shows that she views herself as having more in common with humans than with the rest of the Council.
    • The exact level of her drawing ability wasn't mentioned in her debut outside of her drawing her loading screen, making her drawing of a very realistic peafowl head as part of her first drawing stream and subsequent artistic showcases in Passpartout surprising to many. Her taste for nightmarish "cursed" drawings is also surprising to say the least.
    • She seems to enjoy trolling her genmates, with some acts and displays of apparent forgetfulness and recklessness clearly just being intentional mischief. She also messes with them by acting mildly psychotic. She even tried to destroy the world for her own amusement once!
    • Despite her general persona, she's alluded to being a metalhead and later confirmed it on stream.
    • As she shared with Calli, she's a theatre kid and once played the titular character of Annie for a school production. Musical theatre songs also feature regularly in her unarchived karaoke streams.
    • In her impromptu Apex Legends collab with Ollie and Bae, Mumei shows herself to be pretty proficient in the game.
    • She has a headstrong streak at least in asking for or accepting help.
    • While people were originally surprised by Mumei's more headstrong and dangerous elements, it all lines up with her role as the Guardian of Civilization. Obsession with the collection of resources? Ruthless and creative extermination of enemies? Exploitation of the natural world and refusal to make way for anyone? It all matches the behavior of many human civilizations throughout history. Even her forgetfulness could be constructed as humanity's tendency to not remember the lessons of the past.
    • She has surprising vocal range that catches other members off guard. One notable example being the Holo En cover of "Mind Craft" where her singing in a lower register surprised just about everyone, especially Bae who was producing the cover.
  • The Hyena: Bae mentioned that Mumei laughs easily even at minor amusements, which has been proven true (especially when Kronii is involved).
  • Hypocritical Humor: She wants to see the other girls in bikinis so she can see their belly buttons but would wear a one-piece herself because she refuses to display her own. She fully acknowledges this when pressed on it by the rest of the SNOTcast.
    Mumei: I think I would prefer a one-piece.
Fauna: You were just saying 'no one-pieces allowed'.
    Gura: Yeah. What the heck?
Mumei: Okay. I don't know what on Earth makes you all think rules apply to me, but...
  • Idiot Hair: It's a little hard to notice in the official art due to it being at just the right angle for it to blend into the hair behind it, but she has a single long cowlick right at the center of her head, reflecting her ditzy nature.
  • Image Song: Mumei has one in the form of a single simply titled "mumei", which summarizes the melancholy side of her character's backstory, describing how while she felt lost and lonely for as long as she could remember (and as stated by the opening lines, "All I remember is that I forgot"), she'll continue exploring the dark, uncertain world in the neverending search for that "someone" that will find her peace, even if she will ultimately remain nameless.
  • Informed Flaw: Being isolated from the other Council members in her lore. The others in reality adore her, enough to sidetrack them should she pop in their streams.
  • Insistent Terminology: She absolutely refuses to call Twitter / X by its new name and proclaims that she will never accept it.
  • Ironic Name: She represents the influence of civilization on the world (i.e. a mark), though her first name is a Japanese homophone for the word "unmarked" ("無銘," also pronounced "Mumei").
  • Irony:
    • Despite her stated role as the protector of civilization, Mumei is by far the most actively antagonistic toward it and most of the details revealed about her backstory show her wreaking havoc on humanity and destroying its creations. Contrast that with Fauna, the embodiment of nature, who largely averts Gaia's Vengeance and seems content to passively invite Mumei and people to live in the forest with her, or Bae, the embodiment of chaos, whose only confirmed roles in history's chaos are either accidental or were done under Mumei's orders.
    • Additionally, despite being the proclaimed Guardian of civilization, Mumei has hinted a few times that she's eaten humans, making her a threat to the very humans she's supposed to be protecting.
    • Despite her reputation as The Cutie of the group, Mumei displays an underlying psychotic side where she takes glee in games where she gets to kill or inflict harm upon others.

    L-W
  • Lampshade Hanging: During her 3D debut, she says that it's a miracle that the lantern she always carries with her hasn't caught herself on fire.
  • Literal-Minded: Takes being wished a happy birthday to mean she was just born that day, and when Kronii says she wants to throw hands with Fauna, Mumei asks what size hands she wants.
  • Loophole Abuse:
    • When discussing the "Omen" PV, Mumei argues that she is not Civilization itself but rather its Guardian, and thus should be absolved of any blame in Nature's corruption.
    • During a Minecraft collab with Kiara, Mumei is asked if she's ever sworn on stream before. Mumei then proceeds to teach Kiara that certain swear words should be fine to use if used in their alternate meanings, such as "ass" and "bitch" note .
  • Meaningful Name: Similarly to Ironic Name above, her surname, Nanashi, is a homophone for "nameless" or "anonymous" (名無し, also transliterated as Nanashi).
  • Mellow Fellow: Her default tone of voice is best described as "precocious" and much of her humor is derived from saying things that are suggestive or even downright disturbing in the exact same tone of voice.
  • Mix-and-Match Critter: Has a pet that she has described as "The creature that is both cat and dog." To date, she has never addressed it by what species of animal it is, but instead as "The Animal." Furthermore, when a viewer tried to include Animal in their drawing for her 500K subscriber celebration, she commended them on how good a job they did with no reference, but they left out its scales, suggesting it also has reptilian qualities.
  • Moment Killer: Mumei's 3D showcase begins with her wandering about various civilizations throughout history while a serene tune plays. This is then suddenly interrupted when her phone starts playing the Holotori Dance as her ringtone.
  • Motifs: Gears. Several were seen scattered around her during her introduction, her clothing has several gear-shaped adornments, and she's represented on the Council's logo by one. Fittingly, they're typically used to represent machinery, a human creation integral to the development of civilization.
  • Must Have Caffeine: Zigzagged. While decaf tea makes her stomach upset, actually caffeinated drinks like coffee tend to keep her active for more than half a day instead of mere hours like the typical person and can interfere with her sleep schedule, leading to uncharacteristic behavior.
  • Name Amnesia: Has forgotten her name, along with many other things, simply calling herself "unmarked" and "nameless".
  • Never Given a Name: Her little floating paper bag friend is deliberately left The Nameless because Mumei would never forgive herself for forgetting his name and she's pretty sure she would.
  • Nice Girl: On top of her backstory painting her as kind to humanity, on her debut, she mentions that it's not likely to see her disappointed expression as she understands humans make mistakes, thus not really holding anything against them. Even her gadfly tendencies lack malice.
  • Nightmare Face: A Running Gag with her drawings is her tendency to turn a cute face into a nightmarish abomination. The most common traits among her "cursed drawings" are rows of fangs and glowing red eyes. Her infamous cursed portrait from her third Passpartout stream has become a chat emote known as "nightmare", which appears a lot whenever Mumei acts aggressively. It also gets used as a greeting, especially to new members, as her fanbase has adopted it as their unofficial representation of themselves.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Besides generally cute things she also likes drawing Nightmare Faces, hearing the screams of pain and watching monsters die.
  • Nightmare Fuel Station Attendant: For as much as she draws dark and twisted things, she fails to see them as such and passes it off as completely normal. For example, she comments that the "OH" face she was drawing was "kinda cute" as she finished adding fangs and a long tongue to it.
  • The Night Owl: She usually becomes this after drinking caffeinated tea or coffee, and the accompanying uncharacteristic behavior is why she was slapped with a caffeine ban by Bae.
  • No-Sell: She is practically immune to horror and an attempt by her fellow idols to scare her merely got a "That's it?"
  • No Sense of Direction: Not helped by her attention span or her forgetful nature, she will get lost if given enough time unattended to.
  • Noodle Incident: She appears to have dabbled in cannibalism at some point during her long lifespan.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity:
    • Mumei isn't quite as forgetful as she lets on. Sometimes she will intentionally play it up to gaslight her friends, such as making Bae think she actually had been convinced it was her birthday.
    • Occasionally inverted. By her own admission, her The Gadfly tendencies are often not on purpose, but rather genuine mishaps, yet because people assume she is deploying Obfuscating Stupidity, she reacts with Sure, Let's Go with That and just plays along as if it was all planned.
  • Oh, Crap!: When discussing what led to Civilization corrupting Nature in the "Omen" PV, Kronii suggests that as a record keeper, Mumei would had to have kept her records on paper. Since paper is most commonly made from wood and Fauna is Mother Nature, Mumei immediately and nervously denies using paper.
Mumei: Oh. Wait! No I don't! No I don't! No, I don't write on paper!
Kronii: Where do you write it then?
Mumei: I forgot! No, it's not on paper! It's not from trees! It's nothing like that!
    Fauna: Ehhhh? Trees?
Mumei: No no no no nonono!
  • Ominous Owl: She's normally more of a Cute Owl but sometimes displays worrying tendencies, to say nothing about the Nightmare Fuel of her infamous drawings. Civilization is far from all sunshine and roses, after all.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
  • Ornamental Weapon: Mumei often reminds others of her dagger, as she is never seen using it for actual combat and leaves it hanging on her skirt.
  • The Owl-Knowing One: Chose her owl motif to represent her knowledge and wisdom as the embodiment of Civilization. Tends to come out the most in her ASMR streams, which are best described as "Library ASMR".
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: She filled in for Muman looking like this in Ministry's February 2023 meetup, with her simply wearing sunglasses and having a pasted-on mustache.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Much like Ame, Mumei does not use her model's sad face even when she's quite evidently feeling sad or angry.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: Justified. Mumei describes herself as a Guardian of Civilization, but as she herself notes, she's protecting civilization from outside threats such as Fauna and her desire to overrun civilization with nature, anything that those within civilization do is free game, and does not feel obligated to help humans in conflicts amongst themselves.
  • Punny Name:
    • Another potential interpretation of her name is that it essentially means "Who Who". Her motif is an owl.
    • Reflecting both her owl-like nature and affinity to mankind, her fandom named themselves "Hoomans". The option that didn't get picked was the much more obvious "Who-mans".
  • The Quiet One: Pre-debut on Twitter, she was the one who tweeted the least, and when she does they tend to be short simple replies. This changed post-debut where she tweets much more frequently.
  • Reclaimed by Nature: Mumei's own special performance stage in her 3D Showcase was a collection of old ruins mostly covered in moss. Mumei said that it wasn't Fauna's property just yet.
  • Recognition Failure: Mumei apparently does not know who YAGOO is, failing to recognize him from the YAGOO statue in the JP Minecraft server and a video of YAGOO in real life. This ended up become a recoccuring thing with Mumei always claiming not to know Yagoo when seeing him.
  • Sadist: Bae accused her of this after Mumei revealed that the idea of a scared Bae made her feel excited (Bae was playing a horror game and called Mumei in for emotional support). Mumei's Cute and Psycho tendencies and affinity for The Joys of Torturing Mooks do not help the impression, either.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: She loves to accompany her superchat readings by giving two gentle knocks on her desk while saying "don don" with the knocks.
  • Ship Tease: Like Kronii, she seems to be on board with their ship and likes to tease it. Notably, during Kronii's December 11th 2021 stream of Minecraft, she dragged Kronii into Reine's room in order to recreate a silly invokedShipping fanfic with her which Reine has lying around in her room and which involves a Suggestive Collision where both lovers "accidentally" trip and stumble onto the bed, with one on top of the other. She had IRyS read it out for them as they did so, and explicitly asked her to substitute her and Kronii's names (the original fic is about Reine and the reader).
  • Shrinking Violet: She mentions having some difficulty talking to people and it shows when she communicates with people outside of her generation: In her interaction with Gura during their simultaneous Minecraft streams, she greets her senpai rather formally and insists on not bothering her with sleeping for some amount of time even as chat explains to her Minecraft sleeping etiquette. It takes Gura pranking her for her to loosen up some. Following the EN off-collab in late February 2022, Mumei also admitted to being extremely shy around people in the service industry, always sending Kronii in her stead when she needed to ask for something rather than just doing it herself.
  • Signature Headgear: The owl feathers on her head aren't actually hers, they're like trophies.
  • Signature Laugh: She has a distinctly high-pitched and raspy giggle, as demonstrated here.
  • Significant Birth Date: Mumei's birthday, August 4, is International Owl Awareness Day.
  • Sleep Deprivation: This brought on by caffeine causes Mumei to have an implied mean streak.
  • Sleepy Head: Seemingly started to nod off midstream on multiple occasions in the first few months after her debut, especially when a stream goes past 1 AM Eastern/10 PM Pacific. Even more frequently, she'll be awake enough to manage but still noticeably sleepy (and will mention it in case it wasn't obvious), leading to her chat worrying about her almost as much as Korone's despite her not sharing the dog's penchant for marathon streams. As of early 2022, however, this is a far less frequent occurrence.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Subverted. Although she made an attempt at communicating, Mumei's bird language fluency stops at her making "turkey" noises, ostensibly as a way to appeal to Reine who is commonly referred to as such despite her peafowl design.
  • Stealth Pun: Mumei, who is an owl (fukuro), has a friend who is a living paper bag (fukuro).
  • Stepford Smiler: She is said to have a pitiable aura, yet she is seen smiling.
  • Stylistic Suck: From her drawing streams, Mumei's art skills seem to be rather impressive if she ever decides to draw properly. The thing is that she's more content with making goofy doodles most of the time instead, the quality of which is of a strangely captivating mix of genuine talent and dubiousness that has to be seen to be believed.
  • Surprisingly Creepy Moment: She is this to the Japanese hololive members who assume she's just The Cutie of EN. This is most obvious with the various JP reactions to Mumei's Limit Break in HoloCure, which consists of her "mistake" painting from Passpartout briefly filling the screen, accompanied by a Scare Chord, and wiping everything out. Almost everyone was spooked by it to some degree, with Matsuri outright screaming at it.
  • Token Good Teammate: While none of the Council are explicitly evil (except for arguably Kronii), her description is notably the only one that is not condescending to mankind in general, and in fact seems to hold no malice. She even offered the creation of paper. Given she is an embodiment not of divine origin, this is probably to be expected. However, outside of lore, this could flip to Token Evil Teammate at times as she has the most psychopathic tendencies among them and is implied by lore to be responsible for orchestrating several horrors and tragedies throughout history. In fact, she seems to be the only one on the Council who intentionally wreaks havoc on humanity at large, since most of the harm done by the others is either accidental or Bad Boss tendencies contained to people who joined them willingly.
  • To Serve Man: Despite her status as a Guardian, Mumei has hinted at eating humans a few times.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Mumei started incorporating berries into her character lore after becoming oddly obsessed with the berries in Minecraft.
  • Unwanted Harem: All of Council (and even some others outside of it) wants Mumei as their own, though most prominently between Kronii and Fauna. Numerous ship battles have occurred over who gets to be with her.
  • Verbal Tic: Like an owl, she often says "Who? Who?" and "Oh? Oh?" She also frequently ends sentences with "you see." Also, she tends to say "ayayay" when mildly frustrated. She is also known for calling her chat "sillies" in response to banter.
  • Walking the Earth: She's constantly traveling, which is fitting for a representation of Civilization. Naturally, mud is one of her dislikes.
  • What Is Evil?: Mumei was forced to respond after having repeatedly been called evil. She has stated that from her point of view she isn't, claiming she only does what comes to mind in the moment at any given time, but if some people think her actions are evil, that is their problem, not hers. She also invoked her status as Guardian of Civilization all the while, adding a bit of Above Good and Evil and Omniscient Morality License to the mix.
  • Woman of a Thousand Voices: She has some range in her voice, from the incidental shifts to a death metal voice, to her dead on "ikemen" voice, to a surprisingly good Hank Hill impression of all things. Best shown off in an unarchived karaoke stream where she did "One Day More" all by herself with a different voice for each character. There's also her uncanny ability to imitate Gura, to the point that others think Gura suddenly showed up. This has even worked on Gura herself.

Other characters

    Friend

Friend

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/friend_74.png

Mumei's mascot. A creature that resembles a living paper bag who sometimes floats beside Mumei.

  • Animate Inanimate Object: He is a sentient, floating paper bag-like creature.
  • Butt-Monkey: Friend went from being a paper bag to Mumei's personal punching bag, with his appearances in late 2022 mostly consisting of being abused by Mumei, both verbally and physically. One stream has her accompanied by a PNG of her strangling Friend with her hand.
  • Characterization Marches On: In his early appearances, Mumei seemed to genuinely view him as a friend, even going to lengths to cheer him up when he was upset. This got thrown out the window a year later, when he became her go-to punching bag and she'd seize every chance to take a jab at him.
  • Demonic Possession: Implied in Mumei's kimono reveal stream. A few fan predictions of Mumei's kimono shows Friend over Mumei's head. Mumei warns chat that they do not want to see what happens when Friend takes over.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": He is simply named "Friend" to remind Mumei he is meant to be her friend.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Puns aside, Mumei makes it clear she does not like Friend and keeps him at arm's length.
  • Monochromatic Eyes: Friend has no visible irises, with the entirety of his eyes being a uniform green color. Judging by the fact that they have the same color as what little can be seen of Friend's interior from below, it's possible that his eyes are, in fact, nothing more than two holes in his paper bag body.
  • Out of Focus: Much like Bloop for Gura, appearances from Friend became increasingly scarce, with him sometimes having a habit of accidentally popping up on-stream without Mumei's knowledge. Mumei finally brought him back late in 2022, from which point on she has constantly roasted him.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Friend very rarely smiles, defaulting to a sad frown most of the time.
  • Pointless Band-Aid: Friend has a band-aid cross on its cheek.
  • Power Floats: He hovers above the ground next to Mumei.
  • Tough Love: Mumei claims she must be harsh on Friend, otherwise he risks destroying the world.
  • The Unfavorite: Mumei unsubtly gives preference to Hootsie as her mascot over Friend.

    Hootsie

Hootsie

A small owl that Mumei ended up adopting, who became her other mascot. Unlike Friend, Mumei is very fond of Hootsie and constantly gushes over him.

  • Cuteness Proximity: Mumei tends to gush and swoon over how cute Hootsie is.
  • Iron Butt Monkey: In Mumei's 3D showcase, Mumei subjects Hootsie to a lot of would-be physical trauma, including using him as a baseball and kicking him in the air. However, Mumei affirms Hootsie that is all right and enjoys it.
  • Parental Favoritism: Mumei unsubtly favors Hootsie over Friend as her mascot.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Mumei sure thinks so, finding the small owl to be absolutely adorable.
  • Shout-Out: In Mumei's 3D showcase, Hootsie is given his own segment called "Hootsie's Footsies", which parodies Blue's Clues. In this segment, Hootsie will stamp various objects with a footprint to serve as clues for what Hootsie wants to do.
