The DEV_IS logo

Hololive DEV_IS (pronounced like "device") is a Japanese branch of hololive that was introduced in 2023, making it hololive's newest branch. DEV_IS has a more traditional "idol" aesthetic than other branches and a greater emphasis on music production, but its members still stream a variety of content. DEV_IS was first teased at the end of hololive SPLASH PARTY! Night on July 27, 2023. The branch's inaugural unit, ReGLOSS, was formally unveiled on September 4, 2023, and its members' debuts took place place between September 9 and 10.

ReGLOSS

    As a group

From left to right: Otonose Kanade, Hiodoshi Ao, Ichijou Ririka, Todoroki Hajime and Juufuutei Raden

  • Revisiting the Roots: ReGLOSS looks to be intended as a dedicated VSinger/"idol" unit, with the supernatural lore de-emphasized and a focus placed on music production. Furthermore, they're very specifically marketed not as JP Gen 7, but rather as the first gen of DEV_IS, a new and distinct branch of Hololive Productions. In other words, they're the second coming of INNK Music.
  • Token Human: Notably, none of them seem to be in any way supernatural.
  • The Unpronounceable: Their group name is pronounced as "device", not "de-vis". A-chan is even aware of the pronunciation issue, and clarifies the group name.
  • Vague Age: In contrast to the other branches, Averted. Their ages are listed with their bio.

    Hiodoshi Ao

Hiodoshi Ao [JP: 火威青]

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_5525.jpeg
"My hobby is drawing. And my profession...is also drawing."

Debut Date: September 9th, 2023
Birthday: February 27
Height: 173 cm, 171 cm (without shoes)
Fanbase name: Dokusha
Illustrator: Musshu
Channel: Youtube
Social Media: Twitter

Age: 22
A mangaka who, behind her cool, aloof persona, is secretly something of an otaku.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: Her attempts to swoon Kanade are frequently met with scorn and disgust. Perhaps the most notable example is this interaction they had while they were playing Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes:
Ao: Kanade-chan, if we defuse this bomb...let's get married.
    (Kanade silently detonates the bomb)
  • A-Cup Angst: Not as overtly as some of her peers, but Ao does occasionally imply that she wishes her chest was larger, with the most blatant evident being her desire to take Marine's infamously huge butt and stick it onto her torso.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Micomet like to call her "Ao-kuyu", especially when they're fawning over her.
  • Bifauxnen: Her casual outfit is a suit that makes her look very androgynous, which she proceeded to lampshade in her debut.
  • Brainless Beauty: She's described as a very attractive, boyish girl with a charming personality that can sweep other women of their feet, but her demonstrated clumsiness and propensity for self-inflicted slapstick comedy more than implies that there's not a lot going on upstairs with her character. The "brainless" part became even more exaggerated after Ao learned of how her audience sees her, and as such deliberately plays up her klutziness for comedic effect.
  • Broken Pedestal: Played for laughs. Despite her initial "cool" persona that many fans and fellow idols found charming, Ao's image has since devolved into something of a comedic goofball and giant chicken who called for her mom in the middle of playing a horror game. That, and her curious tendency to bungle almost everything she touches which planted her squarely into the "Pon" category. As Miko and Suisei, perhaps two of her biggest fans on debut, put it:
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet:
    • She was completely blindsided by her attempts to endear herself to her senpais working a little too well, resulting in her dedicating a section of her debut to an apology towards the girls she unwittingly seduced and her fans jokingly dubbing themselves the "Victims Association".
    • Even after her charming facade was broken by her being a massive girlfailure, she's still actually able to win hearts if she isn't making a conscious effort to do so.
  • Color Motif: Blue. Her given name is written using the same kanji for the color blue, her hair and other striking features are also in a dark blue shade, and her demeanor is appropriately calm and laidback. As a Tomboy, she also fits the "Blue boy" part of Pink Girl, Blue Boy as well.
  • Contralto of Strength: Has a deep voice for a girl, befitting her tomboyish characterisation, although her voice goes up several octaves whenever she's frightened or embarrassed.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: How her fanbase ultimately sees her thanks to her klutzy antics, with Ao's herself pointing out in a stream with Calli that her fans think she's cute rather than cool.
  • Endearingly Dorky: Ao's main draw to her fanbase is how awkward she really is despite her cool and aloof appearance no matter how many times she tries to prevent it, which usually fails and just endears her to her friends and fans even more.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Intentionally invoked, with Ao claiming she would win over the hearts of girls with her handsome and boyish charms. The actual result is mixed, with some like Miko and Suisei still liking her but not believing her to be actually handsomely charming.
  • Everybody Hates Mathematics: Ao is utterly hopeless with even basic math, asking her chat or people she’s collabing with for the answers. Aruran-senpai, who used to be a teacher, loves to force her to answer math questions in the hopes she learns something.
    Aruran: What’s 8x9?
    Ao: 8x9 is… uh… errr… 8x9 is… uhh…
Aruran: Is this a joke? My employee can’t do basic math!
  • Fangirl: She is an Onigiriya. She mentions being a regular listener of Okayu's ASMR streams to go to sleep.
  • I Want My Mommy!: She yells out for her mom whenever she gets scared, which actually led to her real mother becoming a semi-regular guest in her horror streams because the older woman actually comes over in response to her daughter's cries for help, despite it making her persona seem less "cool" than she debuted as. After turning this into a Running Gag of sorts, she would deliberately ham it up for comedic effect when possible.
  • Insistent Terminology: She's quick to tell people that she's cool, not cute. This is not helped by the fact that "cool" is not the impression people get after interacting with her for more than a few minutes.
  • Nerves of Steel: Subverted. Ao's cool and calm demeanor goes flying out the window when playing horror games, being easily frightened and screaming quite loudly.
  • Tomboy: Is the self-proclaimed Tomboy representative, wearing boyish clothes and more focused on being cool than cutesy.

    Otonose Kanade

Otonose Kanade [JP: 音乃瀬奏]

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_5528.jpeg
"I'm here to take my stage!"

Debut Date: September 9th, 2023
Birthday: April 20
Height: 155 cm, 153 cm (without shoes)
Fanbase name: Otonozei
Illustrator: gomzi
Channel: Youtube
Social Media: Twitter

Age: 20
An aspiring musician with a kind heart who wears her emotions on her sleeve.
  • Animal Motifs: Chickens, due to her color profile. Fans almost immediately adopted the chicken emoji as their mark and get her to cluck like a chicken any chance they get.
  • Character Catchphrase:
    • "Nantekotta!", a Japanese expression of amazement or surprise. There's also an alternative variant, "Nanchukotta!", which is more often wielded against her by the chat instead.
    • She typically shouts "BAKAME!!" after pulling a fast one on her audience.
  • Conlang: Parodied Trope. She claims to be fluent in the apple "language" in her debut, though it's actually more along the lines of Pokémon Speak instead as she only repeated the word "ringo" several times in different pitches when demonstrating. Other "languages" she speaks include "Chininango" and even "Yago" (which is just a silly impression of YAGOO himself). All three are a pun based off that in Japanese adding "go" to the end of some words usually denotes it as a language.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Some of her jokes can be a bit too groan-worthy, even by Hololive standards. She admitted that management outright advised against the above-mentioned language puns in her debut stream, while Suisei and Miko (who were simulcasting it) started drawing comparisons to Aqua's inability to tell a good joke.
  • Motor Mouth: Inverted. She slowly (and loudly) enunciates every word, which leads to commenters half-jokingly saying that watching her VODs at 1.5x playback speed is a requirement for enjoying them properly. Kanade herself is mildly miffed at said opinion of her. The same stream had Kanade playing Too Fast RPG and trying her best to play this trope straight, just to show that she can.
  • One-Steve Limit: A mild aversion. Her given name is pronounced the same way as Izuru's surname but the kanji is written differently.
  • Token Mini-Moe: The youngest and shortest of DEV_IS, Kanade is often treated like a little sister by her genmates.
  • Through Her Stomach: Her bio mentions her being easily bribed with good food.
  • Troll: Kanade has a penchant for pranking and/or misdirecting her audience in order to laugh at their confusion. Her typical response after successfully fooling someone is to loudly yell "BAKAME!!" in their face.

    Ichijou Ririka

Ichijou Ririka [JP: 一条莉々華]

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_5524.jpeg
"Whatever you need, Ichijou Ririka is success, guaranteed!"

Debut Date: September 9th, 2023
Birthday: May 12
Height: 162 cm
Fanbase name: Secretaries-in-training
Illustrator: Nakamura
Channel: Youtube
Social Media: Twitter

Age: 23
An aspiring entrepreneur who, despite having started her business on a whim, has achieved success thanks to her excellent communication skills and proficiency with people.
  • Bilingual Backfire: A non-insult variation: On Kiara's Holo Shark Tank stream, Anya Melfissa ends up making her pitch entirely in Japanese for the benefit of Ririka. To her surprise, Kiara tells her it wasn't necessary as Ririka was fluent enough in English.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Ririka has learned "You little shit!" from Kiara, and she often incorporates this into her lingo, especially when doing English-only streams.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Kawaii! Positive! Genius!" or "KPG!" for short. Used both to start the stream and to hype her up.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef:
    • Her cooking streams are focused on creating low-budget low-effort meals, and the results are often hardly appetizing — even Haachama got flabbergasted!
    • She asserts, however, that she has her limits and denies that she would eat Aruran's pizza monstrosity, one made with ingredients sourced from members of the VCR GTA Pizza Family, which includes three kinds of seafood, kimchi, gummy bears, chocolate, and vegemite. Of course, Ririka was the one who supplied the gummy bears...
  • Gyaru Girl: On top of her dyed hair with an ombre from blonde to salmon to rose, she displays kogal fashion trends with her default outfit.
  • Mistaken for Destitute: Her cheap meals had the Secretaries-in-training wonder if she's in the poorhouse, to which she replies that she isn't, that's just the kind of food she likes.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Her debut stream starts off with her being Bound and Gagged and only goes downhill from there. And it doesn't stop there. She even actively encourages Ao's more seductive side via role-play.
  • Third-Person Person: Going hand in hand with her cute Gyaru Girl aesthetic, Ririka refers to herself by name, sometimes even adding "chan" for extra cuteness.

    Juufuutei Raden

Juufuutei Raden [JP: 儒烏風亭らでん]

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_5529.jpeg
"Care to join me on a journey through a tale?"

Debut Date: September 10th, 2023
Birthday: February 4
Height: 159 cm
Fanbase name: Dendoshi
Illustrator: Kaoming
Channel: Youtube
Social Media: Twitter

Age: 21
A grandma's girl with a deep love of culture and the arts who dreams of becoming a rakugo storyteller.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Osake wo nomimasu!", right before cracking open some booze live on stream. Considering Raden's love for alcohol, she tends to say this quite often.
  • Characterization Marches On: Something Raden herself has noted. While she originally debuted as a Ms. Vice Girl who just so happened to be a very knowledgeable art enthusiast, her persona gradually became known only for the latter half as her content became formalized and work got in the way of her addictive habits. As such, her streaming persona has become more of a sterilized, educational VTuber instead, to the point where she has to actively behave properly while streaming because her account is followed by those of many big-name art organizations and museums, much to her own delight and dismay at the same time.
  • Cultured Badass:
    • Raden is a lover of the arts, with a particular fondness for rakugo (a traditional Japanese form of storytelling) and paintings. Some of her most popular clips involve her giving impromptu lectures on art and art history to her audience.
    • As a former curator, she loves museums. During a GeoGuessr stream with AZKi, she got sidetracked about wanting to go to the Meguro Parasitological Museum, once collabed with the Shosoin Treasure House and gets equal parts excited and nervous whenever any other museums take notice of her.
  • Fangirl:
  • The Gambling Addict: According to her profile, she also loves to play slots and other forms of gambling machines, which contributed to her budgetary issues.
  • Lady Drunk: Frequently buys alcohol, to the point where she's often struggling for money on other fronts. Her drinking habits are put on full display on her debut stream, where she kicked off her introduction by cracking open a bottle of sake and started chugging immediately.
  • Meaningful Name: Appropriate for a classical Japanese art enthusiast, her given name is a homophone of raden, a traditional decorative technique where mother-of-pearl shavings are inlaid into woodwork to form beautiful, silvery patterns. Indicative of this, her oshi mark is a conch shell.
  • Motor Mouth: As expected of an aspiring rakugo performer, Raden's talking points are delivered at blinding speeds. As demonstrated by her debut stream, she will start talking even faster as she's getting hammered.
  • Ms. Vice Girl: Sure she may be an alcoholic chain smoking gambling addict with poor impulse control and no money, but she is still an overall good person who doesn't let her long, long, list of vices keep her from being the best Idol she can be.
  • Must Have Nicotine: Ever since she admitted her habit of smoking her fans would joke about her being addicted to lighting up at any opportunity, at least until the end of 2023 when Raden confessed to Marine and Fubuki that she was working on quitting smoking.
  • Never Trust a Trailer: Promotional material depicts her having two twintails. These are nowhere to be seen for her official model.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Outside of group illustrations, Raden's visual design by Kaoming is notably much more on the "realistic" side, with a very defined nose and striking eyes that are more akin to how IRyS used to look prior to receiving her 2.0 update. These features make her stand out considerably from the rest of the line-up, all of whom possess decidedly more Animesque designs, especially when their models are placed side-by-side.
  • Perpetual Poverty: She's almost always strapped for cash due to her frequent museum visits (and definitely not because of how much alcohol she buys). Her (re-)debut stream also revealed a gambling problem on top of that, which is apparently so severe that management actually prohibited her from playing slots until she got her channel monetized.
  • Signature Headgear: Hers is a Noh mask, a facewear typically associated with the traditional Japanese theater art of the same name.
  • Signature Laugh: A high-pitched, breathy one that sounds uncannily like how Pekora used to laugh.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Admits to Ririka during a collab stream that she started smoking because she was a fan of Daisuke Jigen, who was also known for smoking.

    Todoroki Hajime

Todoroki Hajime [JP: 轟はじめ]

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_5530.jpeg
"Bam! ...Wow, that actually sounds kinda badass!"

Debut Date: September 10th, 2023
Birthday: June 7
Height: 155 cm
Fanbase name: Massu-gumi
Illustrator: ATIKI
Channel: Youtube
Social Media: Twitter

Age: 21
A "jane-of-all-trades" who dreams of becoming the #1 banchounote , with the help of her partner Banpen.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Despite being neither the youngest nor shortest in her generation, Hajime is frequently babied by her fellow idols due to her childlike demeanor and voice. In fact, she's often lumped together with other such "babies" like Miko and Luna due to the same reason.
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: Hajime is comically lightweight, getting drunk off a small amount of 3% alcohol. When drunk, her speech becomes even more incomprehensible than it usually is.
  • Character Catchphrase: Her streams are almost always opened with "Bun bun bun!", the onomatopoeia of an engine firing up. Given her Japanese Delinquent theme, this is most likely a Bōsōzoku motorcycle engine. She's also known to belt this out when excited, typically in collab games. During a collab stream with Bae, she explained that it's a reference to how the kanji for her last name (轟), which means "roar", "thunder", or "boom", consists of the kanji for "car" (or "vehicle" in general) (車) repeated three times.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Though many consider her as a baby who sometimes is incomprehensible, she nonetheless showed that she's really good in Mario Kart 8 where she attained third place in the 2024 tournament, just behind Towa and Suisei who tied for first.
  • I Just Want to Be Badass: She's a little cutie whose main goal in life is to become a banchou.
  • Singing Voice Dissonance: Unlike her slurring, accented normal speaking voice, her singing is completely clear and intelligible, as well as noticably deeper.
  • Unintelligible Accent: Between a pronounced accent (that some have identified as being from Tōhoku, a region generally seen as Japan's boonies) and her tendency to slur a bit, she can be surprisingly hard to understand at times, with both fellow talents and fans expressing the opinion that she essentially sounds like she's speaking in Baby Talk, similar to Miko and Luna, the former of which was incredibly relieved that there's finally a member who's even less comprehensible than herself. Hajime has mentioned that even Japanese clippers regularly subtitle her all wrong.
  • Vocal Dissonance: In contrast to her relatively mature appearance, her voice is suprisingly high-pitched with hints of childish slurring.
