Main Characters

    Thomas "Tommy" Cadle
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/petalientommycadle.png
"I'm doomed..."

The main protagonist of the show. Tommy is a normal, taffy-loving 13-year-old boy who lived alone in his lighthouse before the aliens crashed into it. Though he wants to live a normal life, he finds himself dragged into his new houseguests' antics while trying to teach them about human culture.

  • Abandoned Catchphrase: He frequently said "I'm doomed..." in season one, but never in season two.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In the toyline shorts, he had ginger hair. In the series, he's a brunette.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Virtually nobody in DeSpray Bay likes him. Clinton bullies him, Melba bosses him around and Granville views him as a threat to Melba's affections. Even Gabby, the nicest of the bunch, is a creepy stalker who sometimes joins in on the other kids' bullying. The adults treat him as a nuisance at best and actively bully him at worst. Tommy gets along better with the aliens, but Dinko and Scruffy are the only aliens who consistently like him; Swanky is a jerk who wants Tommy's bedroom for himself and both Gumpers and Flip sometimes screw with Tommy for their own amusement.
  • Ascended Extra: Downplayed; he had a semi-major role in the toyline shorts as the kid who adopted Dinko and his friends, but otherwise the focus was strictly on Dinko and the aliens themselves. In the animated series, he's the main focus character.
  • Audience Surrogate: For the most part, he's a normal kid who reacts to the aliens' antics as a normal person would.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Generally a friendly kid with saint-like patience, but he can get pretty vicious when he's pushed too far.
    • When he's had enough of Swanky trying to usurp him, take over his room and eventually telling him to "zip it" in "The Boy Who Became Something", Tommy physically throws Swanky out of the lighthouse.
    • In "Uranus Awaits", after Dinko lied to him, trapped him in a simulation and prevented him from finishing his homework, Tommy has enough and brutally calls him out for it. Dinko is left so distraught that he's reduced to The Unintelligible.
    • After being turned into a baby in "The Boy Who Cried "Waaah!"", Tommy repeatedly electrocutes Dinko using the latter's own electric helmet.
  • Book Dumb: He often does poorly in school, to the point where a couple episodes imply he hasn't even gotten Bs. This is subject to Depending on the Writer, with some episodes implying he's naturally lazy and others showing him working hard only to have his work ruined by the aliens.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: He sometimes speaks directly to the viewers, such as informing them that he made a new horoscope for himself in "Horror Scope" or stating that school won't cancel just because the gravity is gone in "The Alien Who Sold the World".
  • Butt-Monkey: Nothing goes right for Tommy. He suffers a ton of abuse through the aliens' misadventures (which he also gets blamed for), is bullied by Clinton, bossed around by Melba Manners, and has to deal with Gabby's unwanted affections.
  • Catchphrase:
    • "DINKO!", which he yells whenever he's had enough of Dinko's antics.
    • He sometimes says "I'm doomed." when he's stuck in a bad situation. Lampshaded by Swanky in "They Came From Outer Space":
Swanky: What's that silly phrase you always say? Oh, yes, "I'm doomed".
    • Whenever one of the aliens says something nonsensical, Tommy will say "Right..." extending the I sound.
  • Character Development: He spends most of the first season being terrified of Gabby and frequently tried to escape from her. By the second season, however, he's gotten over it and now sees her as a friend as of "It Came From the Fan Club".
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: For the most part, he tries to keep the aliens on the straight and narrow and correct their incorrect assumptions about human culture.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Not to the extent of Swanky, but Tommy can get pretty snarky whenever the aliens are acting particularly stupid or he has to deal with Melba Manners. One of his Catch Phrases is a dry, sarcastic "Right..."
Melba: Can I offer you some advice, Cadle?
    Tommy: Can I stop you?
  • Depending on the Writer: Tommy doesn't have much of a defined character beyond being a friendly kid who loves taffy. Thus, a lot of his character tends to vary depending on the episode:
    • He's either the Only Sane Man who gets dragged into the aliens' antics against his will or a fun-loving kid who chooses to get involved in (or even instigates) the aliens' antics of his own volition. His willingness is usually inverse to Swanky's; hence, if Swanky is participating in the madness, Tommy won't, and vice versa.
    • Depending on the episode, he's either willing to exploit the aliens' abilities for unethical means or discouraging them from doing so.
    • He tends to get poor grades in school, but whether it's the result of him being Book Dumb or the aliens constantly disrupting his studying and destroying his work varies.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: In the original pilot, The Most Special Place, Tommy looked completely different. In particular, he had ginger hair, Youthful Freckles, wore a blue shirt with a picture of an alien on it, and looked much younger.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He and Melba usually despise each other, but he doesn't want her to get hurt:
    • In "Evil Emperor", he could easily have left her at the mercy of Emperor Breet, but he instead got the aliens to rescue her.
    • In "Night of the Norwegian Boy", he's appalled by Granville's scheme to win over Melba and calls him out for lying to her. He goes along with the scheme when Gumpers can't provide any more poetry, but only because Granville pathetically begged him to and he still tries to get Granville to tell the truth (which he eventually does).
  • Extreme Doormat: He tries to stand his ground, but he's usually helpless when it comes to stopping the aliens' antics. There are many episodes where the aliens get into trouble and Tommy weakly tries to object, only for them to ignore him and continue on, or even drag him in too. Melba's also dragged him into doing things for her, such as babysitting Emperor Breet or building a parade float, without any real objection on his part.
  • Friendless Background: It's implied Tommy didn't have any real friends before meeting the aliens, as he is shown to be on poor terms with most of the other human characters (particularly Melba, Granville, and Clinton) and doesn't seem to have any other human friends.
  • The Generic Guy: Taffy obsession not withstanding, Tommy is usually depicted as a normal young boy with few notable quirks to play off the wackier, sillier aliens. Some episodes dabbled with giving him other quirks, but they usually didn't stick.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: "Day of the Naked Aliens" shows he wears purple boxers with flowers on them.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Dinko; they've been the best of friends since Dinko saved Tommy from falling off the lighthouse roof.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: A couple episodes imply Tommy is insecure about his own abilities compared to his classmates and the aliens.
    • In "Stage Fright", Tommy spends the bulk of the episode in a Heroic BSoD upon realizing everyone has a special talent except him.
    • In "The Guest Who Wouldn't Leave... Ever", Tommy admits the one thing he's good at is playing Taffimon, a taffy-themed card game. He's visibly saddened when Granville beats him.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: He adopts a kitten in "Night of the Cat People" and treats it very affectionately despite the aliens' fear of it.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: To Dinko. Dinko is dependent on Tommy's approval to stay sane, and whenever their friendship is threatened, Dinko becomes very insecure to the point of undergoing Sanity Slippage.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Whenever the aliens misbehave, Tommy will, without fail, get blamed for it while the aliens get off scot-free. This is because most of DeSpray Bay are too stupid to recognize the aliens as anything more than Tommy's pets and so blame Tommy for failing to control them instead.
  • Morality Chain: Tommy's generally a lot more moral than Dinko, and frequently tries to keep him on the straight and narrow. In "They Had an Aluminium Ticket", even though he really wants the titular ticket, he draws the line at theft and forces Dinko to return the chocolate bars the latter stole from Granville.
  • Nice Guy: While he has self-centered moments and sometimes gets (justifiably) annoyed with the aliens, Tommy is generally a kind-hearted person. He let the aliens stay in his lighthouse with minimal prompting and will help any of them out of whatever trouble they find themselves in.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Granville and the school teacher both call him "Thomas", but everyone else - even Tommy's mom - just calls him Tommy.
  • Only Sane Man: He frequently tries to reign in the aliens' antics and teach them about human culture. He's also seemingly the only person in DeSpray Bay who knows the aliens are, well, aliens.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The calm, reasonable Blue Oni to Dinko's manic, hyperactive Red Oni.
  • The Scapegoat: Whenever the aliens get into trouble, Tommy will, without fail, be blamed for it regardless of how little involvement he had.
Tommy: We have to stop Werescruffy before he eats the town.
Dinko: It is inspiring to know how much you love your home, Tommy of Earth.
Tommy: No, I just don't wanna get blamed. Again.
Granville: (while being chased by Werescruffy) This is all your fault, Tommy Cadle!
Tommy: See, I told you they'd blame me! Again.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: His screams tend to be very high-pitched and effeminate. Lampshaded in "Scare Affair", where Melba can't bring herself to punch him because he "screams like a little girl".
  • Screw Destiny: He doesn't believe in pre-determined futures, proclaiming that he "[controls his] own destiny".
Tommy: I control my own destiny, Dinko. Cameras don't control anything. So the one thing I don't want, is for you to desperately try to prevent me from getting a black eye. Okay?
  • Sweet Tooth: He likes eating saltwater taffy, frequently hanging out at Cap'n Spangley's diner to do so. Offering taffy as a reward is a surefire way to get him involved with the plot of the episode.
  • Too Clever by Half: He's probably the sanest person in DeSpray Bay. Unfortunately, he might actually be too sane, as this has resulted in him refusing to hear the aliens out on anything. As a result, he's taken off-guard whenever his reasonable explanations are wrong and the aliens' seemingly out-there guesses turn out to be correct.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Really, really loves Cap'n Spangley's saltwater taffy. Several plots revolve around Tommy trying to get more of it.
  • Vocal Dissonance: In the first season, Tommy's voice was surprisingly deep and adult-sounding for a 13-year-old boy. His voice would later get higher and more childlike, bringing it more in line with his actual age.
  • Vocal Evolution: In the second season, Tommy's voice got a bit higher and whinier, making him sound younger compared to the teenage-sounding voice he had in the first season.

    Dinko
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/petaliendinko.png
"We've got to help Tommy of Earth!"
Voiced By: Charlie Adler

A small, neurotic green dinosaur-like alien who acts as the group's leader, and Tommy's best friend. Dinko frequently causes chaos in DeSpray Bay by misunderstanding Earth culture or by trying to help Tommy in his daily life with his inventions. However, he generally means well and will always help Tommy in any way he can.

  • Berserk Button: Hoo boy, Dinko has a few: don't put Tommy in danger, don't try to take the title of best friend out from under Dinko (he is absolutely obsessed about that and will go into a bunch of hair-brained schemes to re-establish himself as Tommy's best friend), and don't call Dinko by the wrong name.
  • Birds of a Feather: "It Came from the Fan Club" reveals that Dinko and Gabby are friends because of their shared love and admiration for Tommy. It's subtly pointed out that their mutual obsession is the only reason they're friends, since Dinko struggles to come up with anything else when listing everything they have in common.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: His moral code is entirely determined by how Tommy feels. If it would help Tommy or make him happy, it's good, and if it would harm Tommy or make him sad, it's bad. Many of Dinko's more questionable actions are done under the belief that they would make Tommy happy.
  • Bungling Inventor: Many of his inventions are well-intentioned, but very poorly thought-out, such as an electric helmet that electrocutes Dinko every time the button is pushed or a Tommy defense system that can't be turned off. In "The Earth Boy who Needed Protection", he admits that his inventions are "pure instinct", explaining why most of them don't have any thought put into them.
  • Butt-Monkey: Not to the extent of Tommy, but he frequently takes comedic abuse. In "The Black Eye of Doom", he gets his foot crushed by Melba, hit in the face with Clinton's football, punched by Cap'n Spangley, run over by Granville and repeatedly pecked by a seagull.
  • Catchphrase:
    • "Greetings and salutations, Tommy of Earth!"
    • In a couple episodes, he says "Do not speak... words just get in the way" whenever he and Tommy are having an emotional moment together.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Dinko isn't quite all there in the head. One episode shows he puts on hair gel despite not having hair!
  • Constantly Curious: He has an unyielding curiosity for human culture and will often go to extreme lengths to satisfy it.
  • Depending on the Writer: Whether he needs to sleep varies depending on the episode. In some episodes, he does sleep, but in others, he can stay up for days (often annoying Tommy in the process) without needing to rest.
  • Deuteragonist: He's the second most prominent character after Tommy. Many plots revolve around Dinko learning a new Earth concept, and the consequences it has for Tommy.
  • Ditzy Genius: He's brilliant, but very naïve to Earth concepts and often causes or exacerbates the problems of the episode by misinterpreting them.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Dinko comes from a species of aliens known for their technical knowhow. He's made countless inventions out of the junk lying around Tommy's lighthouse.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Tommy; they've been the best of friends since Dinko saved Tommy from falling off the lighthouse roof.
  • It's All About Me: Dinko genuinely has Tommy's best interests at heart, but he often fails to consider that what he thinks is best doesn't line up with what Tommy wants and pushes forward with his "solutions" even when they make Tommy's problems worse.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Though Dinko can be short-sighted and often disregards Tommy's wishes or puts him in harm's way, it's never out of malice, and he sincerely wants Tommy to be happy. Whenever he actually realizes he's screwed up or hurt Tommy, Dinko will go above and beyond to make amends.
  • Keet: Almost always in a chipper, energetic mood.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Claims to be an expert on Earth culture, but he often makes obvious mistakes and clearly doesn't know as much as he thinks he does.
Dinko: I... I am an expert on Earth culture, but I know nothing about babies! (whimpers)
  • Large Ham: He can get very over-the-top and loud when he's deep in his schemes. It comes with being voiced by Charlie Adler.
Dinko: NO! Tommy of Earth's life must be exciting...! Something must be DONE! By MEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
  • Literal-Minded: He often misinterprets Tommy's offhand statements as literal facts. In "Escape from Detention X", he fails to interpret Tommy's comments about being in detention "forever" as the obvious exaggerations they are and fears he and Tommy would actually be stuck in detention for the rest of their lives.
  • Made of Iron: He has an extremely bouncy body that allows him to take a lot of comedic abuse without going down.
  • Mike Nelson, Destroyer of Worlds: A couple episodes have actually ended with Dinko destroying the Earth itself out of sheer incompetence, such as "Curse of the Frozen Tommy" where he creates a black hole that sucks the entire world in.
  • The Millstone: Dinko means well, but whenever he tries to fix Tommy's problems, he will inevitably, without fail, make them worse.
  • Mundane Object Amazement: Dinko is very fascinated by Earth concepts and will always jump at the chance to learn about them, no matter how mundane they are.
Dinko: Tommy of Earth, that was the most exciting thing I have watched since the time we boiled water!
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Most aliens of Conforma, particularly those of Dinko's species, are content to adhere to routine and conform (hence the name). Dinko himself is the exact opposite, being a curious, hyperactive Cloudcuckoolander who loves building inventions and exploring Earth culture.
  • Nice Guy: He sincerely wants nothing more than Tommy's happiness. Though he often annoys Tommy and puts him in danger, it's never out of malice but rather a misguided attempt to make him happy.
  • The Nicknamer: He never calls any humans by their proper name. Tommy is "Tommy of Earth", Tommy's mom is "Mommy of Tommy of Earth", and Melba is "Bossy/Crabby Neighbor of Tommy of Earth".
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Despite his small size, he's capable of picking up heavy boulders and flinging them great distances, as shown in "The Horrible Workout of Evil". He also regularly picks up Tommy and runs while holding him without breaking a sweat.
  • Prone to Tears: Dinko frequently, overdramatically bursts into tears, particularly when he believes he's failed Tommy.
  • Really 700 Years Old: It's never mentioned in the show, but the official website mentions that Dinko lived in the Comforma dimension for 300 years before he and the other aliens landed on Earth.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The manic, hyperactive Red Oni to Tommy's calm, reasonable Blue Oni.
  • Reed Richards Is Useless: It's implied in "The Time that Time Ended" that, if he wanted to, Dinko could cure all the world's illnesses and create world peace. However, he's too lazy to do such a thing and is usually content to goof around with Tommy.
  • Super Not-Drowning Skills: As shown in "The Time that Time Ended", Dinko can breathe and even dance underwater.
  • Super-Strength: "The Horrible Workout of Evil" shows that he's strong enough to effortlessly lift and throw a gigantic boulder that dwarfed Granville's house.
  • Super-Speed: He can move at great speeds in the blink of an eye. In the DS game, he can run through treadmills that are too fast for the other aliens to bypass.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Tommy. Though his inventions cause Tommy great pain and grief, Dinko genuinely does want the best for him and would move mountains to make him happy.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He often goes to extremes in his efforts to help Tommy, such as putting him through Training from Hell to toughen him up after his back breaks or forcing him to eat nothing but oatmeal and tofu to make sure he grows up healthy.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He's terrified of cats, as both "Scare Affair" and "Night of the Cat People" show.

    Gumpers
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/petaliengumpers.png
"It's a NIGHTMARE!"
Voiced By: Jess Harnell

A large, pink alien who resembles a mix between a toad and a gorilla, and the muscle of the aliens. Gumpers has a heart as big as his appetite, and is afraid of almost everything. He frequently tags along with Tommy and Dinko in their misadventures. He's dim, but has flashes of wisdom from time to time.

  • Affectionate Nickname: He cheerfully refers to Tommy as "Tom".
  • Batter Up!: Frequently wields a baseball bat as a weapon. He really loves hitting things with it.
  • Big Eater: Gumpers loves eating everything, to the point where a couple episodes show him devouring hundreds of courses worth of meals in a single sitting. A couple times, he's even eaten humans! However, he does have his limits: he became visibly sick after eating every potato chip in DeSpray Bay in "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Swanky" and he eventually threw up after Granville gave him vindaloo in "Night of the Norwegian Boy".
  • Catchphrase: "Oh boy oh boy oh boy!", said whenever Gumpers is excited over something.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Not Gumpers himself, but his living tooth is completely absent in Season 2 after semi-frequently appearing throughout Season 1.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Gumpers has a very bizarre train of thought. Best summed up by his perception on time in "Terror in my Nose":
Gumpers: Dinko wanted me to tell you that in cookie hours, forty minutes and chocolate cake, that it'll be pancakes and you guys can go to the sandwich.
  • The Ditz: Normally, he's very stupid. In "Evil That Pinched My Feet", he couldn't even think of a word beginning with B!
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Occasionally, he actually makes a reasonable point despite his stupidity.
    • When Dinko gets confused by the idea of Tommy becoming "something" when he eventually grows up in "The Boy Who Became Something":
Gumpers: Uh, Dinko, I think this may be just another one of your misunderstandings. Although they often result in comedic hijinks to the delight of many, perhaps this time we should just go ask Tommy to clarify this new Earth concept.
Dinko: We cannot, he is busy doing his homework.
      Gumpers: Aw.
    • In "Stage Fright", he summarizes Dinko's talent as "making Tommy's life miserable". Considering the amount of abuse Tommy goes through as a result of Dinko's antics, Gumpers is completely correct.
  • Dumb Muscle: He's strong, but clumsy and not very bright.
  • Expy: He's essentially an alien version of Patrick Star, in that they're both large, pink creatures who'll eat anything, are extremely strong, and are very dim with flashes of brilliance.
  • Extreme Omnivore: He'll eat anything and everything, ranging from normal food like cereal and taffy to inanimate objects like shoes and newspapers.
  • Gasshole: He loves farting - either through his butt or his ears - and burping.
  • Genius Ditz:
    • Gumpers can have great ideas, he just has to think hard enough. Several episodes have him quickly coming up with solutions to problems Dinko's caused.
    • As "He Walks and Talks Like an Alien" shows, Gumpers can solve complex math equations in seconds. It apparently extends to other forms of trivia too, such as history.
  • Gentle Giant: Played With. Gumpers can be extremely clumsy and destructive, but he does have a gentle, protective side towards those smaller than him. "Master Bakers" has him protecting what he believes to be people turned into gingerbread men, and "The Land that Size Forgot" revolves around him preventing the aliens from shaking a snow globe under the belief it's actually a tiny city full of people.
  • Hidden Depths: It's Played for Laughs, but he can be pretty refined when he puts his mind to it:
    • "Sounds of Doom" shows he can play the accordion really well.
    • In "The Great Movie Massacre", he suggests that Tommy make an series of vignettes about man's struggle with his own mortality.
    • Several episodes like "The Cow Says "Moo!"" show that he knows how to use a computer with minimal difficulty.
    • As shown in "Night of the Norwegian Boy", Gumpers can come up with beautiful, inspirational poetry on the drop of a hat.
  • Jerkass Ball: He's usually a Nice Guy, but Gumpers has moments of acting like a jerk completely unprovoked. In "They Took Tommy's Brain", he tricks the amnesiac Tommy into repeatedly jumping head-first off the lighthouse, completely uncaring of the boy being injured, and only relents when Dinko notes that Tommy may kick Gumpers out.
  • Kindhearted Simpleton: Not very smart, but he's usually a friendly alien who's always happy to help Tommy and Dinko with their problems.
  • Lovable Coward: He's scared of practically everything, which is played for comedy.
  • Mad Libs Catchphrase: "[Plural noun] is scary", said whenever he encounters a new concept and is scared of it.
  • Simpleton Voice: Befitting his stupidity, Gumpers speaks with a slow, low-pitched, lethargic voice.
  • Stout Strength: Despite his fat body, Gumpers is extremely strong, to the point where he's knocked over the lighthouse numerous times.
  • Super-Strength: He's, bar-none, the strongest of the aliens. At least one episode shows he's strong enough to flip the lighthouse onto its side.
  • To Serve Man: Due to being an Extreme Omnivore, Gumpers has occasionally eaten humans, such as Tommy in "Master Bakers" or Granville in "They Took the Toilet to Outer Space".
  • Top-Heavy Guy: Gumpers has a huge, muscular upper body, but tiny legs.
  • Vocal Evolution: In season 2, Gumpers' voice went from slow and lethargic to sounding higher and more energetic.

    Swanky
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/petalienswanky.png
"Why bother? Their lifespan is less than a hundred years."
Voiced By: Jess Harnell

A tall, skinny, blue alien who resembles a mix between an insect and a bird, and the brains of the group. Swanky is a pretentious, sarcastic, self-centred prima-donna who loves caviar and crabs, and frequently concocts schemes to either get rich or steal Tommy's bed for himself.

  • Aliens of London: To empathize his snooty, pretentious nature, Swanky speaks with a British accent despite none of the other aliens doing so.
  • Birds of a Feather: In "The Creature Who Left", he develops a friendship with Granville based on their shared pompous personalities and love of all things cultured. However, it doesn't last when Swanky eventually grows to miss the other aliens and breaks it off with him.
  • Body Pocket: Swanky has two pockets on his body that are capable of holding practically anything.
  • Butt-Monkey: He frequently suffers comedic abuse as a result of the aliens' misadventures.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Whenever he has a scheme, he's prone to hamming it up and going all-out on the theatrics.
  • Catchphrase: "Nincompoops.", which he frequently says in response to the other aliens' antics. He even says it in the first theme song!
  • Deadpan Snarker: He's always got a sarcastic remark in response to his fellow aliens' antics.
    Dinko: I have FAILED!
Swanky: I thought you'd have been used to that by now.
  • Dirty Coward: If in danger, he'll happily sacrifice Tommy or the aliens to save himself. In "Night of the Werescruffy", he tries to feed Tommy, Dinko and Flip to the titular monster when the lights flicker off.
  • Expy: He's essentially an alien version of Squidward Tentacles. Both characters are blue creatures with cynical, pretentious personalities who constantly suffer slapstick at the hands of others.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: He'll never get to sleep in Tommy's bed. Any time he tries, he's thwarted by either the aliens screwing it up for him or Tommy himself throwing him out.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: None of the aliens particularly like him, due to his Jerkass attitude. In "The Day of Judgement", they outright laugh at his misfortune, though they regret driving him away when he leaves the lighthouse.
  • Hey, You!: Only refers to Tommy as "Earth Boy". It's to the point where when he actually calls Tommy by his name in "The Slo-Mo Terror", Tommy realizes something's wrong.
  • It's All About Me: Swanky is a prima-donna who only does anything when he stands to benefit from it. He's tried to screw over Tommy and the aliens numerous times just to make himself happy.
  • Jerkass: Swanky cares for no one except himself. He frequently insults the other aliens, exploits them for his own gain, and has repeatedly tried to steal Tommy's bed despite Tommy letting him stay in the lighthouse to begin with.
  • Kick the Dog: In "A Pirate and his Dog", he's pointlessly cruel to Scruffy. He literally kicked the dog-like alien, told him that that no one loved him and to never come back, and threw him out of the lighthouse before locking the door so he couldn't come back in.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: He claims to be the Only Sane Man, but his knowledge on Earth culture is just as lacking as that of the other aliens:
Swanky: And that is DeSpray Bay's tallest building. It's called... erm... Pumpkin Johnny. [...] And over there is the water tower. His name is... Barnaby.
  • Lean and Mean: He's constantly mean and cruel to the other aliens and Tommy.
  • Not So Above It All: Though he tries to be cultured, he's just as prone to comedic antics as the rest of the aliens.
    • In "The Amazing Atomic Tommy", he believes Dinko has money in his nose after witnessing Tommy's magic trick.
    • At one point in "The Thing on the Corner", he tries to out-burp Gumpers (though his efforts are comically pathetic).
    • He loves bouncing on Tommy's bed whenever the latter's not around to stop him.
  • Only Sane Man: Whenever Dinko and Gumpers are out on another scheme, Swanky will sit on the sidelines and snark about their stupidity.
  • Out of Focus: He was fairly prominent in the first season, appearing in every episode and getting multiple focus episodes revolving around him. In the second season, he is far less prominent and is outright absent from numerous episodes.
  • Pet the Dog: In "The Slo-Mo Terror" he initially raises his snails with the intention of eating them later, but quickly becomes fond of them and refuses to let anyone eat them.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: He very much believes he should always be the center of attention, even though most of the cast hate him for his egotistical ways. In "Night of the Walking Cannonball", he tries to get DeSpray Bay to treat him like a celebrity despite having done nothing to warrant said attention.
  • They Killed Kenny Again: Swanky has died on at least three separate occasions, having been disintegrated by both a stray firework in "The Day of Judgement" and by Bob in "The Guest Who Wouldn't Leave... Ever", and sucked into a black hole along with the rest of Earth in "Curse of the Frozen Tommy". By the next episode, he's perfectly fine with no lasting injuries.
  • Token Evil Teammate: While most of the aliens cause trouble for Tommy by accident, Swanky often goes out of his way to screw him or other characters over for his own personal gain.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Befitting his highbrow tastes, he really loves caviar and crabs.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: It's not enough for Tommy to let Swanky stay with him; he absolutely has to have Tommy's room. Several of Swanky's schemes revolve around getting Tommy out of the picture long enough to get to sleep in his room.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Implied, since he constantly disparages the other aliens and Tommy but still lives with them nonetheless.

    Flip
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/petalienflip.png
Voiced By: Charlie Adler

An hyperactive, green and purple alien who resembles a parrot, and the wildcard of the aliens. Flip lives in his own world and frequently speaks in gibberish with only the last few words being anything coherent. He loves to cause trouble and mess with others, particularly Swanky.

  • Adaptation Personality Change: In the original toyline, Flip's main trait was that he liked to ride on shooting stars, and the web shorts showed him as a more reasonable individual who can speak in complete sentences. In the show, he's an insane Cloudcuckoolander who speaks incoherently and doesn't ride shooting stars.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: None of Flip's actions have any discernable logic or reason to them whatsoever and are primarily based on whatever crosses his mind at that very moment. He'll push buttons, pull levers and screw with basically everyone.
  • Characterization Marches On: In season 2, his tendency to speak in gibberish was completely phased out. Whenever he does (infrequently) speak, he immediately gets to what he's actually saying.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: He frequently goes off on unintelligible tangents and is extremely hyperactive.
  • The Gadfly: Loves screwing around with others for his own amusement, such as repeatedly slamming the bathroom door on Swanky's face, blocking Tommy from entering the lighthouse or stealing Clinton's bike.
  • Jerkass to One: Generally cordial with the other aliens, but he loves repeatedly attacking Swanky unprovoked.
  • Out of Focus: For the most part, he's exclusively used for comic relief and doesn't play a major role frequently. He only got two focus episodes: "Beast Who Stole My Heart" and "The Day That Flip Stood Still", and he spends most of the latter episode as a Living MacGuffin.
  • Polly Wants a Microphone: Flip is an alien that looks like a bird and can talk, though it's difficult to decipher what he's saying.
  • Super-Speed: When in a hyperactive mood, Flip can move at ridiculously fast speeds. In "The Day That Flip Stood Still", he moves so fast that he's practically a blur.
  • Team Pet: Flip appears to be Dinko, Gumpers, and Swanky's pet, resembling a parrot.
  • The Unintelligible: Whenever he speaks, it comes out as a string of gibberish with only the last few words being decipherable.
  • Wild Card: Flip runs on his own internal logic, so it's a complete crapshoot as to whether he'll help or hinder the aliens on any given episode.

    Scruffy
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/petalienscruffy_2.png

A purple dog-like alien who appears to be Dinko's pet. He's a friendly dog who has an extremely long, elastic tongue (that is implied to be smarter than he is).

  • Advertised Extra: Scruffy's billed as one of the six main characters, but his presence within the show itself is extremely minimal. Most of his appearances have him in the background, he's outright absent from numerous episodes, and several of the secondary cast like Melba, Granville and Cap'n Spangley get more focus than he does.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Generally a friendly alien, but he can get pretty vicious if angered. When the aliens proceed to ignore him again after promising not to at the end of "A Pirate and his Dog", he angrily growls and mauls them off-screen.
  • Dogs Are Dumb: Scruffy's not a very bright dog. It's actually stated a couple times that his tongue is smarter than he is.
  • Flat Character: Due to his lack of screentime or dialogue, Scruffy has little characterization beyond being the aliens' pet dog.
  • Heroic Dog: He has his moments. In "He Walks and Talks Like an Alien", he uses his tongue to grab Tommy when the latter accidentally falls off the lighthouse.
  • Living Prop: For the most part, he primarily exists for gags involving his tongue and doesn't get as much focus as the other aliens.
  • Overly-Long Tongue: He has an extremely long, elastic tongue.
  • Our Werewolves Are Different: If fed anchovy pizza while the full moons of Conforma are aligned and the global population of Conforma engages in a synchronized belch at the same time, Scruffy becomes a large, werewolf-like creature called a Werescruffy. While in this state, he's inclined to eat anyone in sight and eating sugar makes him grow 400 times in size. However, the transformation only lasts fifteen minutes, at which point he reverts back to normal and vomits out everything he swallowed.
  • Out of Focus: By far the alien with the least focus. Scruffy is frequently absent and has little plot relevance whenever he does appear, with "Attack of the Werescruffy" and "A Pirate and his Dog" being the only episodes to focus on him.
  • The Speechless: Unlike the other aliens, he doesn't speak.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: His vicious Werescruffy form is extremely big and strong, can swallow people whole and apparently grows 400 times in size if he eats sugar.
  • Team Pet: Scruffy is Dinko's pet alien dog.

Citizens of DeSpray Bay

    Melba Manners
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/petalienmelba.png
"Oh, and by the way: third place?! You'll be lucky to get a parking place!"
Voiced By: Candi Milo

Tommy's spoilt, bratty next-door neighbour who frequently bosses him around. She is very short-tempered and is feared by all of DeSpray Bay.

  • Always Someone Better: Whenever she and Tommy compete in anything, she will completely thrash Tommy without fail. Tommy sometimes has to enlist the aliens just to get anywhere close to beating her, such as in "It Landed on the Porch" and "It Walks and Talks Like an Alien".
  • Butt-Monkey: She sometimes suffers slapstick, such as getting a Pie in the Face from both Dinko and Granville, having her butt sucked into a vacuum cleaner, or getting her clothes stolen.
  • Catchphrase: "TOMMY CADLE!" and "This is all your fault!", both aimed at Tommy whenever the aliens act up.
  • Control Freak: She absolutely has to have control over everyone else and will shout and bully anyone who argues with her into compliance:
Melba: Buying weenies is not the same as making weenies, Cadle! If I wanted everyone to buy the party food, then I would have told everyone to BUY THE PARTY FOOD!
Tommy: Why are you telling anyone anything, Melba? You're just a guest at this party.
Melba: [Death Glare] Okay, yeah, but I'm the guest who's in charge!
  • Cranky Neighbor: She's one of Tommy's next door neighbors, and a Jerkass who likes bossing him around. Lampshaded in "She Comes For Your Heart", where Dinko refers to her as the "Crabby Neighbor of Tommy of Earth".
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: She's cute, but she frequently screams and has a very shrill voice.
  • The Dreaded: Given her hot temper and abrasive personality, most of the cast either fear Melba or are at least uneasy around her. She knows this; she easily intimidates Tommy, Gabby and even Clinton into building her parade float in "The Floating Head" by beating them all in Staring Contests.
  • Enraged by Idiocy: She frequently gets annoyed with the aliens' stupidity and attacks them whenever they annoy her.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • She usually limits herself to insults and won't punch anyone unless they've really annoyed her. Unfortunately, Granville and the aliens tend to do just that.
    • In "Scare Affair", she almost punched Tommy after Dinko dropped a cream pie on her head, but ultimately decided against it on the basis that Tommy, having just screamed like a little girl, was too pathetic to hit. In general, despite their enmity, she draws the line at physically harming Tommy.
  • Evil Laugh: She loves to let loose a loud, hammy laugh whenever she's doing something mean.
  • Fiery Redhead: She has red hair and a very short temper that's caused her to lash out at Tommy, the aliens and Granville numerous times.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She has her hair done up in pigtails.
  • Girly Bruiser: Despite her feminine appearance and hobbies, she can throw a mean right hook when angered. Granville's been the recipient of her wrath numerous times.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: She's very quick to anger, especially around Tommy or the aliens.
  • Hidden Depths: She's really, really good at Staring Contests.
  • Ironic Name: Melba Manners ironically has no manners of her own.
  • Jerkass: For the most part, she's a complete brat who treats Tommy, the aliens, and everyone else around her like dirt.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: She frequently calls out the aliens for causing trouble and Tommy for failing to properly discipline them. Her aggravation towards the former is perfectly understandable, considering the aliens tend to cause mass chaos and mayhem with little regard for others; "Invasion of the Balloon People" even shows Dinko, Gumpers, and Flip bothering her by repeatedly ringing her doorbell (which has apparently happened enough that they've even made a game about it).
  • Large Ham: She can get pretty loud when angry or shocked.
Melba: Something's wrong... the sun is too high in the sky. THE EARTH IS SPIRALING OFF ITS AXIS! OR WORSE: I'VE OVERSLEPT!
  • Little Miss Snarker: She has a lot of biting remarks towards the aliens and Granville.
Melba: [to Gumpers, who's pressed up against a bakery window] You know, you can go inside?
  • Mean Boss: She frequently bosses Tommy and the other kids around, verbally abuses them and never treats them with any respect.
  • Only Sane Woman: Not to the extent of Tommy, but she sometimes plays the straight man to the aliens, particularly Gumpers.
Gumpers: Hurray! Let's storm the lighthouse!
Melba: Yeah, you live in the lighthouse.
Gumpers: Hurray! You storm the lighthouse!
  • Pet the Dog: Despite her bratty nature, she has a few minor moments where she's not all bad:
    • In "Darkness", she walked over to Tommy's lighthouse in the rain to check if he was okay, with seemingly no ulterior motive.
    • In "It Comes When You Sleep", she offered the aliens candy canes during Christmas.
    • In "The Earth Boy who Needed Protection", she is genuinely concerned when Tommy breaks his arm and even offers to sign his cast.
    • When Tommy wins the game for his team in "Big Hand of Fate", she compliments him and admits he's "not bad".
    • In "Scare Affair", she almost punches Tommy when Dinko drops a cream pie on her head, but ultimately doesn't go through with it on the basis she can't punch someone who Screams Like a Little Girl.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Melba wears a pink shirt, skirt and shoes. Her bedroom is also pink all over, from the walls to the ceiling to her bed.
  • Second Place Is for Losers: She hates coming in anything other than first and will do whatever it takes to win.
Tommy: This year, third place is mine! [hiccups]
Melba: Okay, third place? Super. Um, you might as well finish in twentieth place. Winners always finish number one. [chuckles] You know who finishes number two? Not me, that's who.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: To Tommy. The two constantly antagonize each other and have very few positive interactions.
  • Spoiled Brat: She's very rich and spoiled, and constantly bosses Tommy and the rest of the kids around.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Tomboy to Gabby's Girly Girl. While Melba is quite feminine herself, she is extremely hot-tempered and frequently beats people up. Gabby is far more sensitive and fantasizes about Tommy coming to sweep her off her feet.
  • Tsundere: She's usually mean to Tommy, but there are a couple moments that imply she actually does care for him to some extent. She goes out into the rain to check on Tommy during the power cut in "Darkness" (and when confronted, smarmily responds that she wanted to see if he was alright), and, although she's punched the likes of Gumpers and Granville on occasion, she never actually tries to hurt Tommy.
  • Villainy-Free Villain: Melba's not evil in the slightest, and most of her antagonistic roles boil down to her trying to beat Tommy in a competition or forcing him to do menial tasks. However, she is a huge Jerkass who shows little regard for anyone except herself and frequently punches the aliens and Granville whenever they annoy her.
  • Your Size May Vary: A minor case: she is shown to be noticeably taller than Tommy in "Attack of the 50 Foot Boy" to justify Tommy's Height Angst, but in every other appearance, she and Tommy are the same height.

    Gabby
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/petaliengabby.png
"Tommy Cadle... I sense... he's doomed."
Voiced By: Candi Milo

Tommy's other next-door neighbour. Gabby is a Mexican girl who has an obsessive, unrequited crush on Tommy, to the point where she can smell when he's "doomed". In Season 2, she mellows out slightly and befriends Tommy and the aliens.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: She's head-over-heels for Tommy, but he's terrified of her because of her clingy, obsessive nature.
  • Always Identical Twins: She and her cousin Jabby look almost identical, to the point of using the same character model. The only difference is that Gabby wears glasses while Jabby doesn't.
  • Berserk Button: Don't harm or even insult Tommy in her presence, lest she break out her karate or go Terminator on your butt.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Generally a lot more demure than Melba, but if angered, Gabby's no less violent. She viciously pursues and attacks Granville when he mocks Tommy's pimple in "Crater of Doom", Terminator-style.
  • The Cat Came Back: It's impossible to trap Gabby or otherwise keep her away from Tommy. In "She Comes for Your Heart", Dinko and Gumpers try to trap her in a box, but every time they open it, Swanky is inside the box instead while Gabby is somewhere else.
  • Catchphrase:
    • In the earlier episodes, she had a tendency to say "Tommy Cadle... I sense... he's doomed." whenever Tommy was in trouble.
    • "Ooooooh!", which is said whenever she's enthralled with something (usually Tommy).
  • Character Development: After Season 2's "It Came from the Fan Club" had her finally befriending Tommy, Gabby's Stalker with a Crush tendencies were heavily dialed down to make her more of a straight-up Nice Girl. Notably, while Tommy was terrified of her throughout the first season, he's much more willing to hang around her as a friend by the second.
  • Girl Next Door: She's one of Tommy's next door neighbors who has a crush on him.
  • Girlish Pigtails: To show her femininity, Gabby has her hair tied up in pigtails.
  • Gratuitous Spanish: She sometimes speaks Spanish, particularly when obsessing over Tommy.
  • Latin Lover: Played With; she has a Mexican accent and a major crush on Tommy. However, Tommy doesn't recuperate her feelings.
  • Nice Girl: Starting with Season 2 onwards, despite her obsessive tendencies, Gabby is generally one of the few characters to be consistently nice and friendly to Tommy and the aliens.
  • No Full Name Given: Her last name is never stated; everyone just calls her Gabby.
  • The Nose Knows: She has the uncanny ability to smell Tommy whenever he gets close.
Gabby: (sniffs) Tommy Cadle... (sniffs) I sense... (sniffs) he's doomed.
  • Pink Means Feminine: She wears pink ribbons, pink sandals and has a pink heart on her top.
  • Satellite Love Interest: She's primarily defined by her crush on Tommy, with many of her actions being done in a bid to win him over. Even her friendship with Dinko is based on their shared love for Tommy.
  • Stalker with a Crush: She frequently invades Tommy's personal space and is so obsessed with him that she can flat-out smell his emotions.
  • Token Minority: The Mexican Gabby is the only non-white human character in the cast.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Girly Girl to Melba's Tomboy. While Melba is quite feminine herself, she is extremely hot-tempered and frequently beats people up. Gabby is far more sensitive and fantasizes about Tommy coming to sweep her off her feet.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: By Season 2, her stalker tendencies were mostly phased out and she's much more respectful (if still flirtatious) towards Tommy.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Nowhere near as violent as Melba, but try to hurt her crush Tommy and Gabby will make you pay. She attacks Granville when he mocks Tommy's pimple in "Crater of Doom" and deflects the entire class' volleyballs to protect Swanky (who was in Tommy's body at the time) in "The Evil that Thumbs Do".

    Granville DeSpray
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/petaliengranville.png
"Despite your smashing good looks and fantastic muscle tone, there can only be one dancer in this neighborhood, and that dancin' boy is ME!"
Voiced By: Jess Harnell

A rich, nerdy British boy who is descended from the founders of DeSpray Bay. Granville has an obsessive crush on Melba and despises Tommy because he believes Tommy is also trying to win him over. He frequently suffers comedic abuse at the hands of the aliens.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: He repeatedly tries to win over Melba, but she's repulsed by his advances and frequently attacks him.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: To an even bigger extent than Tommy, no one likes Granville. Melba spurns his advances, Clinton bullies him, Gabby once tried to attack him for mocking Tommy and both Tommy and the aliens find him annoying and obnoxious. The only character who even remotely gets along with him is Swanky (through their similar personalities), and even then, he prefers to be with the other aliens because of how boring Granville is.
  • Ambiguously Bi: He has an extremely obvious crush on Melba, but he also obsesses over Tommy just as much and even finds him attractive in "It Came From the Closet":
Granville: Despite your smashing good looks and fantastic muscle tone, there can only be one dancer in this neighborhood, and that dancin' boy is ME!
  • Birds of a Feather: In "The Creature Who Left", he develops a friendship with Granville based on their shared pompous personalities and love of all things cultured. However, it doesn't last when Swanky eventually grows to miss the other aliens and breaks it off with him.
  • Butt-Monkey: Rarely does an episode go by without him suffering at the hands of the aliens, Melba, or Clinton.
  • Catchphrase: "This is all your fault, Tommy/Thomas Cadle!"
  • The Chew Toy: Absolutely nothing goes right for him; whenever he shows up on-screen, expect him to suffer comedic slapstick.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Anyone who talks to inanimate statues probably isn't all-there in the head.
  • Companion Cube: His dog statue, Admiral Puff, appears to be the only friend he has. He frequently treats it like a living creature and even has tea parties with it. "The Little Monster Ball" reveals he has numerous other animal statues.
  • Determinator: No matter how much he gets beat up for it, he never gives up on trying to win over Melba.
  • Harmless Villain: For a certain degree of 'villain'. Granville frequently tries to antagonize and one-up Tommy, but he's comically inept at doing so and almost never wins.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: He has no real friends of his own (to the point where he talks to inanimate statues), as most of DeSpray Bay despises him for being weird or annoying. He's tried to remedy this a couple times:
    • In "The Little Monster Ball", he throws a party and forces the other kids to come. None of them are particularly happy to be around him.
    • He's so lonely that he'll even hang out with Tommy, his sworn enemy, such as in "The Cow Says "Moo!"":
Granville: I say! Perhaps we could team up: you and I, side-by-side, sticking clues and fighting crime like-
Tommy: Yeah, I'll pass on that.
Granville: Quite right! I shall be in the laboratory when you'd like to review the clues! [puts on mask] I'm so lonely...
  • Leitmotif: A distinct old-timey tune sometimes plays whenever Granville is on-screen.
  • Mistaken Nationality: For some reason, everyone believes he's Norwegian despite him clearly being British.
  • Selective Obliviousness: For whatever reason, he absolutely refuses to comprehend that Tommy isn't in love with Melba, despite Tommy outright telling him as such in "The Guest Who Wouldn't Leave... Ever". This is implied to be because Granville won't accept that Melba doesn't love him back and is looking for someone else to blame.
  • Stalker with a Crush: He frequently spies on Melba in the hopes of finally winning her over. As "Terror TV" shows, he has cameras set up to watch her house.
  • Unknown Rival: He's frequently hostile to Tommy, seeing him as a potential rival to Melba's love. Tommy is completely oblivious to this and merely sees Granville as an obnoxious nerd.

    Clinton Fillmore Jefferson XIII
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/petalienclinton.png
"Looks like I win again, Cadle. Losah!"

A Canadian jock who frequently bullies Tommy and Granville. He is extremely passionate about sports (particularly football) and frequently calls everyone "losahs".

  • Catchphrase: "LOSAH!", which he constantly calls Tommy.
  • Competition Freak: He views everything as a competition. Whenever he and Tommy have to do something together, Clinton treats it as a race and tries to do whatever Tommy's doing faster.
  • Crass Canuck: Clinton has a thick Canadian accent, and he's a Jerk Jock who always calls Tommy a "losah".
  • Hypocrite: Absolutely hates being called a "losah", even though he calls people "losahs" all the time.
  • Jerkass: Probably the meanest character in the cast. He displays no redeeming qualities and delights in mocking those less capable than him.
  • Jerk Jock: He constantly plays sports and also loves to bully Tommy.
  • Signature Laugh: "HAW HAW HAW!"
  • What the Hell Is That Accent?: Clinton speaks with an extremely odd accent that fluctuates between General American, Canadian and African American.

    Cap'n Spangley
Voiced By: Charlie Adler

A crazy old sea captain who runs the local taffy shop Tommy and the aliens hang out at. He's one of the only recurring adults in the show and frequently takes on other jobs.

  • Adults Are Useless: He's pretty incompetent all-around, and, like everyone else in DeSpray Bay, is incapable of realizing the aliens are aliens.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: He doesn't appear to be particularly sane. In "Attack of the 50 Foot Boy", he tries to harpoon a giant Tommy, mistaking him for the mythical "whale boy".
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: He's competent at making taffy, but some of his flavors are very... suspect. In "He Walks and Talks Like an Alien", one of his taffy flavors is called "really old shoe".
  • Mad Libs Catchphrase: "'Tis me old nemesis, the [plural noun]!"
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: He technically runs the local taffy shop, but a couple episodes have depicted him in other jobs like a sailor or a scout leader.

    Old Man Bitters

A crotchety old man who runs the crab shack, and Cap'n Spangley's main nemesis. He frequently insults the rest of the cast and complains about the happenings around him.

    Frenchy
Voiced By: Jess Harnell

A French boy who dresses like Napoleon. He usually appears as a minor background character and rarely speaks.

  • Butt-Monkey: He usually suffers misfortune whenever he shows up.
  • Catchphrase: "C'e la vie." and "We shall make them pay, no?" Both phrases are the only things he says.
  • The Napoleon: He's among the shortest kids in Tommy's class, and is implied to be quite touchy about his height. In "Attack of the 50 Foot Boy", he vows to "make them pay" after presumably being rejected from the same ride Tommy was. He also dresses like Napoleon, making him a literal example.
  • Recurring Extra: If he shows up, it's usually as a background extra.

    Tommy's Mom
Voiced By: Candi Milo

Tommy's obnoxious, overbearing mother who communicates with him through a speaker in the lighthouse. She never appears on-screen and seems to be oblivious to the aliens living with Tommy.

  • Adults Are Useless: She's completely useless in solving whatever problem Tommy's facing that episode, and often causes more problems whenever she calls.
  • Demoted to Extra: She was heard in several episodes in the first season, but her relevance took a major cut in Season 2 to the point where she's only heard in one episode: "She Came from Conforma!"
  • Locked Out of the Loop: It's heavily implied she doesn't know the aliens are living in Tommy's lighthouse, since she never acknowledges their existence. Whenever the aliens cause Tommy to fail at something, she blames Tommy and not the aliens themselves.
  • Parental Neglect: She doesn't play much of a role in her son's life, to the point where he essentially lives by himself in his lighthouse. Whenever she actually communicates with Tommy, it's to make him do chores, drag him to an event he doesn't want to attend, or otherwise inconvenience him in some way.
  • Parental Obliviousness: She has no idea about the aliens living in her son's lighthouse.
  • Unnamed Parent: Her real name is never stated. Tommy simply calls her "Mom", while Dinko calls her "Mommy of Tommy of Earth".
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Whenever she calls Tommy, it's to give him chores or inconvenience him. When the aliens inevitably get involved, chaos ensues.
  • The Voice: She's only heard through a speaker and never appears in person.

Aliens

    Emperor Breet
Voiced By: Candi Milo

The aliens' Arch-Enemy who resembles a human child.

  • Achilles' Heel: Musical chairs, oddly enough. He's never won a game, which the aliens exploit to send him retreating from Earth.
  • Arch-Enemy: To the aliens. They and Breet have apparently had many battles before the start of the series, and Breet has vowed to defeat them and take over the universe. By the end of "Evil Emperor", this enmity extends to Tommy as well.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: In his final appearance, "The Day of Judgement", Breet successfully manipulates Swanky into moving to another planet where he is imprisoned and beaten by demonic aliens, and faces no consequences for doing so.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: He wants to take over Earth, but is incompetent to the point of being defeated by musical chairs and lollipops. The worst thing he does is trick Swanky out of moving out of the lighthouse, which obviously doesn't last long since he's back by the next episode.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He pretended to be a kind, six-year-old boy named Peebo to win Tommy over. However, after having to deal with the aliens' antics, he revealed his true colors as an destructive alien.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: After appearing in two (plus a cameo in a third) episodes in the first season, Breet doesn't appear at all in Season 2.
  • Enfant Terrible: He resembles a small child, but he's actually pure evil and wants to destroy the aliens.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: He can retract his horns, tail and fangs and change his eye color to resemble a human.

    Dr. Daffodil
Voiced By: Charlie Adler

An alien doctor who Tommy and the aliens sometimes turn to for help.

  • Anatomically Ignorant Healing: He's implied to be a great doctor for the aliens, but his expertise on treating humans is... lacking. He's tried to cut off Tommy's head a couple times, apparently believing it would grow back, and once mistook the population of DeSpray Bay for plants.
  • The Cloudcuckoolander Was Right: Some of his methods, though suspect, do indeed work, such as in "The Doctor is In... Sane!" where he successfully removes the flowers from the heads of everyone in DeSpray Bay by tickling them.
  • Dr. Jerk: He's a complete jerk to Tommy, constantly insulting him and subjecting him to treatments that don't work. When Tommy got a swollen hand, Dr. Daffodil simply laughed and said people would mock him.

    Bob

A black hole warlord who bullied Gumpers in the past. When Dinko enlists him to help Tommy win a game of Taffimon in "The Guest Who Wouldn't Leave... Ever", he moves into the lighthouse and quickly overstays his welcome.

  • The Bully: He bullied Gumpers when they went to school together, and apparently has numerous "Gumpers" on other planets he also loves to bully.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: It's implied his bullying ways are a means of overcompensating for the fact he flunked out of school and can't actually make black holes.
  • Jerkass: He takes glee in tormenting his old bullying target, Gumpers, and kicks him, Tommy and the rest of the aliens out of the lighthouse when they try to make him leave.
  • Large Ham: He frequently breaks into loud, hammy proclamations whenever he's about to use his power.
  • One-Shot Character: Only appeared in "The Guest Who Wouldn't Leave... Ever".
  • Thin-Skinned Bully: He takes glee in pushing Tommy and the aliens around and even tries to kill them with a black hole, but when they hold their ground, he quickly gives up and leaves the lighthouse.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: The episode title ("The Guest Who Wouldn't Leave... Ever") says it all. He moves into the lighthouse and refuses to leave, forcing Tommy and the aliens to fight him in a bid to make him go away.
  • Tom the Dark Lord: The demonic warlord who can summon black holes is named Bob.

    Shank and Dank
Voiced By: Candi Milo (Shank), Charlie Schlatter (Dank)

A two-headed alien Tommy enlists for the DeSpray Bay festival under Dinko's suggestion in "Duet from Another Dimension".

  • Composite Character: In the show, in addition to their Multiple Head Case gimmick, they're also entertainers who sing. This calls to mind another alien from the toyline who never appeared in the show, Chillz, who was also a singer who came from a planet where everyone was born an entertainer.
  • Dreadful Musician: Though their singing is implied to be amazing on Conforma, on Earth, it's ear-splittingly bad. Tommy described their music as "horribly awful".
  • Finishing Each Other's Sentences: Often, one will start talking and the other will butt in halfway through to finish their sentence.
Dank: Why don't you want us...
Shank: ...to sing at your festival?
  • Gender Flip: In the original toyline, Shank and Dank were both male. In the show, Shank became female.
  • Multiple Head Case: They're a two-headed alien whose heads constantly argue with each other.
  • One-Shot Character: Shank and Dank only appeared in "Duet from Another Dimension".
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Shank, who speaks with a female voice, has a pink neck, while Dank, who speaks with a male voice, has a light blue neck.
