Not Tropeworthy: Dream Team

To-do list:

    Original post
Note: This thread was proposed by FernandoLemon.

Dream Team is attracting a lot of People Sit on Chairs examples that basically boil down to "2+ people worked together this one time", which was the same type of issues that did in Relationship Voice Actor. My wick check for it shows that around half of the examples fall into this category (and a large portion of them come from the Music/ namespace, which covers around 40% of the trope's wicks), while only 4 have the importance be brought up in-universe.

Solution: Disambiguate, much like Relationship Voice Actor. It could potentially be made in-universe only, but there doesn't seem to be enough examples for that, plus the name invites gushing.

Wick check:

    In-Universe
  • ArmorPiercingQuestion.Anime And Manga: The Big Bad of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig, Kazundo Ghoda, delivers one to all of Section 9 after he blatantly uses them to transport a case of stolen plutonium out of a dangerous area: he intentionally opens the case to reveal it was empty, and informs that the real case of plutonium was safely recovered by the military. Batou protests how the jerk just used Section 9 as a decoy, leading to this as his response, making them realize even Section 9 could easily be wiped out in a fight if the enemy has numbers on their side.
Batou: Just who do you think we are, pal?
Ghoda: The real question is who do you think YOU are? An elite squad of the hand-picked chosen few? This is technically a pothole, but it explains the trope
  • Characters. The Crown 2016 Friends And Acquaintances Of The Royal Family: Those gathered by Fruity to bolster the Duke’s case for his return to royal service are some of the most influential members of British upper-class society, including politician Sir Walter Monckton, society photographer and artist Cecil Beaton, Lord “Bobbety” Salisbury, Lord Beaverbrook (owner of the Daily Express), Selwyn Lloyd (Foreign Secretary from 1955 until 1960) and author Vita Sackville-West. In the end, their efforts are All for Nothing, as the Marburg Files and David’s Nazi connections rear their ugly head and the Queen, utterly appalled at the revelations about her uncle's past, firmly blocks any chance of his return to royal service.
  • Characters.Yowamushi Pedal: Fukutomi describes Hakone as "a team of aces". Technically correct if a bit on the short side
  • ComicBook.Necronauts: Arthur Conan Doyle, H. P. Lovecraft, Charles Fort and Harry Houdini team up. Knowing that these are real people is enough
  • Literature.Strange The Dreamer: The outsiders that the Tizerkane bring into Weep all have special expertise that make them experts in their fields. Among the assembled are a mathematician, a natural scientist, a renown architect, a couple who invented a flying machine, twin brother geologists, and a girl who is really good at climbing.

    Subjective
  • Characters.Lupin III: The best thief, most deadly assassin, fastest gunslinger, and most beautiful trickster team up to do crime.
  • Characters. Two As One Princesses: The synergy between Ain and Ciel is uncanny. With Ain's [Song Princess] who can only be heard by Ciel who has [Dance Princess] they boost each other's strength to ridiculous proportions.

Gushing about real people working together (PSOC)

    Potholes
  • Awesome, Dear Boy: When the American Olympic Selection Committee was putting together the original Dream Team in 1992, some top players were initially reluctant to sign on for various reasons. Michael Jordan would rather have been playing golf, and Larry Bird's health issues were forcing him to the brink of retirement. It was only after some others, particularly Magic Johnson, enthusiastically answered the call that the unique historical potential of the team became apparent. By the time the roster was set it was obvious this would be a team like no other, and in the years since many of the players, including even Jordan, have stated that it was the most important and memorable experience of their careers.
  • Plot Tailored to the Party: The "Demon Seed" arc of The Dragon Doctors is the first one that makes full use of the abilities of all four magical doctors at once. The patient is a man with a sentient parasite slowly devouring him from within, can see everything he sees, and will take over his body and attack if they alarm him. First Kili the shaman/therapist puts the patient into a hypnotic mind-meld trance, then his body is magically petrified by the wizard to trap the parasite and keep him stable, then the Magitek diagnostician and surgeon drill it out of his body one piece at a time.
  • Variant Power Copying: In Kuroko's Basketball, while Kise can normally just rely on standard Power Copying when replicating ordinary techniques, he often has to resort to this trope when copying the techniques of the Generation of Miracles. For example, while he doesn't have the Emperor Eye, he can replicate its effects closely enough with the observational skills and reflexes he uses to copy opponents in the first place.
  • Awesome.John Rain: The Killer Collective: Not only does the book itself get a CMOA for assembling the Dream Team of assassins and operatives covered throughout the series, but Larison also gets one when first ambushed at Colonel Horton's house. While Hort and Rain retreat to gather more weapons, Larison sprints into the forest and hunts down a group of operatives like a hellhound.
  • Creator.Johnny Hallyday: The last of his concerts happened on July 5, 2017 during the tour of "Les Vieilles Canailles", a sort of Dream Team of legends of 1960s French rock & roll with the addition of his friends Eddy Mitchell and Jacques Dutronc. They were gathered for the first time in 2014.
  • Music. All Things Must Pass: Improv: Harrison gave the backing musicians free reign to change arrangements on their own - a fine idea given how much talent he was surrounded with. The third record consists of nothing but short improvised jams.
  • Quotes.Boisterous Bruiser: The trope is namechecked, but it says nothing about it
No matter how much you thought he deserved to be skewered, the man would wear you down with his antic charm. All of the Dream Teamers were friendly and polite when they met my family, but Charles was the one to bear-hug my sons and tell my wife, feigning confusion, "You seem like a nice woman. What the hell's the matter with your judgment?"...

    Zero-context examples
  • Characters.Maple Story One: Despite having little in common, they form a team in the 2016 MapleStory Detectives event. Yes team no dream
  • Characters.TNOUSA: To save the URI and Hart's legacy by extension, Chep rallies as many supporters as he can to counter the conservatives' attempts to kill it, which includes many of the supporting characters that showed up in Hart's campaign, from progressive voices such as Jane Jacobs, Walter Reuthers and Bayard Rustin to experienced establishment figures such as Henry Kissinger and Birch Bayh. But what makes them an example of this trope?
  • Film. The Blues Brothers: The Blues Brothers band in-universe. Blatant ZCE
  • Manga.Kurokos Basketball: Neither explains why they're a dream team
  • Wrestling.Mick Foley: Him and Terry Funk. Blatant ZCE

    Other
  • All-Star Cast: Compare Massive Multiplayer Crossover, Celebrity Voice Actor, and Dream Team. See also
  • Creator.Elle Mac Pherson: She, Kathy Ireland and Rachel Hunter were billed this way on the cover of the 1994 Swimsuit Issue. Lampshaded, posible creator troping
  • Music.Negativland: Played straight and parodied on Escape From Noise; the album features many prominent, highly respected local names in music and counterculture alike (including Mark Mothersbaugh and members of The Grateful Dead), a few of whose contributions are absolutely minor, or have nothing to do with their talents (e.g. Jello Biafra flushing a toiletnote , a member of Big City Orchestra running a leafblower, a random vocal sound from Church of the Subgenius Reverend Ivan Stang). A parody of the concept
  • WebOriginal.Minecraft Championship: The aptly-named Dream Team (Dream, George, and Sapnap). All three competitors are very skilled (with Dream and Sapnap consistently ranking in the top ten, and often in the top five), and have very good communication and overall teamwork. They've all been put on the same team for three competitions—7, 11, and All-Stars—and won two out of three times (11 and All-Stars). It is lampshaded, at least

Paging ~FernandoLemon and ~Dghcrh as requested. Anyway, I agree with disambiguating for the reasons stated, and I'm against making this IUEO if there aren't enough wicks for that.

So the reason why I asked for Dghcrh to be pinged as well is because he argues that there might be enough in-universe examples to salvage it. See Sandbox.Dream Team In Universe Examples.

I'd like to apologize for all this.

I'll wait to see what they say, but actually, I think I will vote in favor of making this IUEO instead of scrapping it, because it seems like there's more potential behind this than Relationship Voice Actor and the Hey It's That X series, and it's just bogged down by bad out-of-universe examples. If it lacks wicks after that, we can always do an example drive on TLP.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.

[up][up][up]Yeah reading the description I'm surprised it even got that many out of universe wicks since it's not written as a trivia trope in the slightest. While I think there are several examples in the wick check Dghcrh did that are ZCE/not examples of the trope, I think the concept is sound and there are at least 10 to keep the trope alive.

In-universe only.

I was wondering if Dream Team could be retooled into being YMMV. I tend to see it used to describe collaborations between two or more people that are very talented and/or popular, particularly where music is involved. Since whether creators are liked or not seems subjective, I feel like it could fall under YMMV, or at least the general concept could.

Stuff where real collaborators are branded a dream team (as in the current image, or maybe those single-charity-record supergroups like Band Aid) still fall under IUEO, or no?

Also, what do we do with examples that feel subjective but are about fictional characters, like the ones I put in my wick check?

By the way, I said it in the OP but I'll repeat: the most problematic section is Music/, almost all the examples there can be deleted.

[up][up] If they're branding themselves as such, we could count them as in-universe.

As for being branded as a dream team, IUEO tropes do allow RL examples unless if declared otherwise, so in a sense, maybe?

  • The Team is a very broad trope that covers all groups set up to complete a task on which each member has an assigned role/skillset to aid that task.
  • Dream Team is a subtrope where the members of The Team are explicitly the very best of the best. There are (in theory) no weak links, everyone is The Ace in their specialty, etc.

The Team does have some of its own issues that the Five-Man Band thread has discussed, but those are the key differences.

Trope Repair Shop: Dream Team
5th Apr '23 1:56:40 AM

Crown Description:

Dream Team is attracting a lot of People Sit On Chairs examples that basically boil down to "2+ people worked together this one time", which was the same type of issues that did in Relationship Voice Actor. However, it has been suggested that in-universe examples have sufficient meaning, so making the trope In Universe Examples Only has been suggested. What should be done with Dream Team?
