Don't burn yourself!
Clockwise from top left
There are few things cooler than heroically jumping through a plume of fire. In acknowledgement of that, many many video game and platform settings put it upon themselves to create scenarios to make it happen. Flame Spewer Obstacle, also known as Flame Trap, is when environmental hazards exist for the sole purpose of periodically erupting into flames. This generally takes the form of a timing puzzle, but the fire can also be proximity triggered, or it can be just a static obstacle that must be entirely avoided.

This type of hazard that is most commonly encountered in platformer games but can also be found in other genres. In contrast, flame spewers are almost nonexistent in real life outside very specific areas of specific factories.

Flame spewers can most commonly be encountered in the following forms:

  • Flames emitting from broken pipes (usually gas pipes)
  • Flames emitting at the ends of a pipe (also usually gas pipes), particularly ends of flame vents
  • Flames being shot by specific flame emitters and flame traps
  • Flames emerging from cracks in the ground
  • Flamethrower-equipped enemies shooting with it through slits

Such hazards are most commonly encountered in Lethal Lava Land and Eternal Engine. Sometimes also present and functional in a Temple of Doom. Also a staple inclusion of any self-respecting Deadly Training Area or Conveyor Belt o' Doom. Such places have No OSHA Compliance.

The earliest instance of such obstacle can be found in Jump Bug, released in 1981. Usage of flame spewers as an obstacle became more widespread during the late 1980s and has remained a fairly common obstacle in platforming games ever since.

  • Pikmin games each have their fair share of fire geysers. Red Pikmin are Immune to Fire, which makes them the ideal choice for dealing with them. These geysers can make it difficult for other Pikmin types to cross, so the Reds can be used to traverse such areas, or destroy the geysers so that other Pikmin can cross.
  • Slain has floor hazards that shoot out tall flames at regular intervals.
  • A common obstacle in Tomb Raider, they're at their deadliest in the PlayStation era of games where Lara only has seconds to put the flames out if she isn't able to dodge them in time.

These are especially dangerous because fire deals severe Damage Over Time, and the more a living thing (whether Caleb or an enemy) stays in contact with fire, the longer they burn for and the more damage it deals per second. Stronger traps fire explosive fireballs akin to the Napalm Launcher's, that deal high damage, cause Splash Damage and also sets things on fire.

  • Later expansion packs of World of Warcraft have incorporated several of these, either in the open world itself or in dungeons and raids (most often in those of the Lethal Lava Land variety, of course). One of the most infamous is a corridor filled with "flames of ice"-things in Icecrown Citadel to reach the raid's main hub after undead Dranosh Saurfang is defeated. There are also several in the infinite/solo dungeon Torghast in Shadowlands, as parts of the numerous traps conceived by Painsmith Raznal, a servant of the Jailer.

    MOBA
