Party Members

    Johnny Garland

Voiced by: Kunihiro Kawamoto (JP) Jamie McGonnigal (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/JohnnyGarland.jpg
Johnny is a teenage boy who runs his own detective agency. He lost his father and older sister in an accident three years ago, along with a portion of his memories. He was supposed to take over his father's business, but opted to become a detective to find out what really happened in the accident. When the story begins, he's asked by a strange man named Gilbert to find a missing man named Marlow. When Johnny witnesses Marlow being eaten by an otherworldly monster, he realizes that this case just might be more than he bargained for.
  • Amnesiac Hero: Due to a traffic accident when he was a kid there are noticeable chunks of his memory missing, to say nothing of how much time he lost while in the following coma.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: He can manipulate Malice, which is formed from hatred and anger, but Johnny is a good guy.
  • Continuity Nod: It's Anastasia's camera.
  • Double Weapon: While in his Awaker form. Eat your heart out Darth Maul.
  • Enemy Scan: With a camera. There is a side-quest built around collecting the snap-shots of the game's monsters.
  • Fragile Speedster: Johnny boasts the highest speed and luck in exchange for health and offense, which makes him an unusual departure from your typical jack-of-all-trades RPG heroes. Upon gaining access to his Awaker powers, his offensive powers improves dramatically, especially when he obtains his 'Ether Purge' power.
  • I Am Who?: Johnny is the first successful human revival attempt from the Emigre Manuscript who hasn't become a mindless monster in the process... but there are some side effects.
  • Idiot Hair: While he's not stupid, just naive. But look at him, that's a very noticeable ahoge!
  • Laser Blade: Can form one from his knife with Malice. There's a good reason for that.
  • Mana Drain: Stock Drain. Fear the stock-draining prowess of Johnny's vacuum cleaner!
  • Missing Mom: Implied. His mother isn't even mentioned in the game.
  • Mr. Fanservice: As Awaker, he becomes a well-built young man who is even less clothed than Lady.
  • Non-Elemental: All of his attack skills have no element.
  • Occult Blue Eyes As the Awaker.
  • Older Than They Look: He's actually 21 years old, but he lost 5 years between his death and resurrection. Awaker reflects his true age.
  • Only Sane Man: Since he hasn't any conscious encounters with the supernatural before witnessing Marlow's death by the monster, he's rather weirded out by the strange creatures and some of his teammates.
  • Private Detective: Runs a detective agency, and implies most of the cases he's hired for are tracking down lost pets, and jumps at the call when Gilbert hires him to track someone simply because it's different than the normal stuff that private detectives do. (Sadly, in Real Life, they're almost never hired to investigate actual crimes.)
  • Superpowered Evil Side: The Awaker, Johnny's true form, is hostile to his allies at first, but he ultimately menages to control it's powers.
  • Supporting Protagonist: Played straight for the first two-thirds, then subverted once you reach the Garland Mansion. When your sister is the Big Bad, you aren't "supporting" any more.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: Johnny believes the cause is the car accident where he lost his family. What he remembers is partially true, but the accident was just the catalyst. His memory loss stems from dying and later being resurrected, almost becoming a Soulless Shell if not for his sister Grace giving him all her Will.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Whenever he transforms into Awaker.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: As Awaker.

    Shania

Voiced by: Ryoko Nagata (JP), Kelly Ray (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Shania_SH3_358.JPG
She is a Garvoy tribe priestess and warrior woman. With her bodyguard Natan always at her side, Shania wanders the country slaying the demons that emerge from the "Window"—the very thing that ended Marlow's life. She is blessed with the power of Fusion, the ability to borrow the power of Nature Spirits for use in her hunt. She saves Johnny's life and in turn Johnny asks to accompany her in the hopes that they will find Gilbert.
  • Cute Monster Girl: All of her fusion forms.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: As the game's Fusion-user, it's her innate element. She's also the second main character.
  • Dual Wielding: A pair of tomahawks.
  • Horned Humanoid: Tatan'Ka, her second Fusion, has bull-like horns.
  • Male Gaze: The camera from Johnny's view pans to her breasts when he wakes up after falling unconscious at Marlow's apartment.
  • Magic Knight: While Yuri favours physical power both in and out of his Fusion powers, Shania is more balanced and more adept at using magic than Yuri is.
  • Ms. Fanservice: When she does a Battle Strip for every fusion, what do you expect?
  • Power Floats: When transformed into La Sirene, Shania can float.
  • Power Tattoo: Shania gets a new tattoo each time she undergoes a Soul-Pact.
  • Revenge: Lady killed her whole tribe and since then she has been hunting her to kill her.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: In the Purgatory, she represents Wrath, as she is driven by revenge. If you leave her for last, she will also be consumed by Envy.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Possibly unintentional, but Johnny spells her name as "she-nai-ya" during cut-scenes.
  • Stripperific: Heck, she strips before fusing!
  • The Power of the Sun: Her final fusion. Maxing its statues is necessary to get the good ending.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifter: Fuses with nature spirits to take on their forms and abilities.
  • Wham Shot: The bad ending only differs in one detail from the good ending — Shania isn't there when Johnny leaves the agency. Then the camera leads us to her, on top of a skyscraper as a storm brews, and she opens her Malice-red eyes.
  • Winged Humanoid: Thunderbird, her first Fusion, is a purple angel-like creature.

    Natan

Voiced by: Nobuaki Kawamitsu (JP), Matt Hoverman (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Natan_7175.JPG
Shania's quiet and extremely protective bodyguard. He uses Guns Akimbo and often calls Shania "Princess". He doesn't speak much, but is actually a warm-hearted person and in the few times he does speak, he usually explains things to Johnny.

    Frank Goldfinger

Voiced by: Banjo Ginga (JP), Marc Thompson (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Frank_Goldfinger_8450.JPG
A hyperactive and quite hammy ninja hailing from... Brazil? He was the only survivor of a plane crash and landed in the jungles of Brazil. After wandering for a week he stumbled upon the "Ninja Hideaway", a secret ninja village that has existed there for 300 years. He is a subordinate of Mao, tends to talk in the third person, and often calls Johnny "Boy", much to Johnny's chagrin. He is dedicated to protecting the safety of the States and is on a mission to find out Gilbert's true intentions. He makes his swords out of anything he can find and mount to a hilt.
  • Expy: Of Joachim from Covenant. Both being Boisterous Bruiser idiot super-heroes and the physically strongest party member of their respective games. Both Joachim and Frank can pick items lying on the ground to use as weapons and face their mentor in their endgame sidequest.
  • Highly-Visible Ninja: Even extends to a cloth he uses to hide. They aren't supposed to have the American flag on it.
  • Improbable Weapon User: He puts a cactus on a hilt. He puts a firework on a hilt. He puts a larger sword on another hilt. His Infinity +1 Sword? A shishkebob with food on it.
  • Large Ham: A given for Shadow Hearts, but he stands out even in this cast.
  • Light 'em Up: Oddly enough this is his element.
  • McNinja: A Polish-American ninja trained by Brazilians.
  • Mighty Glacier: The toughest member of the party outside of Shania's fusion, and also the slowest.
  • Ninja: Not a very good one, but he is one.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: In the Purgatory, he represents Pride. If you leave him for last, he will also be consumed by Envy.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Before he joins the party, he wanders around in a nice blue suit with a pocket square.
  • Shown Their Work: A Brazilian Ninja might seem off, but when Japan's largest non-Asian minority are Brazilians, it makes more sense. Sorta.
  • Third-Person Person: Frank always talks in the third person.

    Mao

Voiced by: Kujira (JP), Marc Thompson (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Mao_SH3_3977.JPG
A giant female talking cat who also happens to be a drunken master. She's currently serving as bodyguard and second-in-command to the infamous gangster, Al Capone. Frank refers to her as "Master". Mao is an aspiring actress, and is working on a kung-fu flick in her spare time at Purramount Pictures.
  • Cats Are Mean: Mao can be rough and harsh. She has little tolerance for the people she dislike (She bullies Elliot Ness until he gives up his precious magazine and then she admits liking doing that because she can't stand law enforcers) or the ones she perceives as imcompetent or useless (Frank is shown to be really afraid of her). Oddly enough, Mao doesn't seem to (really) mind to be called "Master Meow" by Johnny.
  • Crossdressing Voices: English speaking players may be surprised when they first hear feminine pronouns applied to the ultra suave voiced passive-aggressive gangster.
  • The Dragon: To Al Capone. A non-villainous example as, in this game, Capone is portrayed as a nice guy, contrasting his rival, Roy McManus.
  • Drunken Master: Her weapons are different vintages of alcohol.
  • Eyes Always Shut: The few times she opens them they're revealed to be yellow.
  • Making a Splash: Her element. Also, to obtain cat coins, Mao has to kill enemas with her water-based Personal Skill.
  • Meaningful Name: "Mao" means cat in Mandarin Chinese.
  • Mega Neko: She is as tall as Johnny.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: She's a hard-drinking talking martial artist cat who aspires to be a movie actress, and she acts as Al Capone's bodyguard and second-in-command. She's also training Frank.
  • Noodle Incident: Mao is very adamant when it comes to talk about how she met Frank in the Brazilian jungle or what happened in the Sushie Bar at Rio de Janeiro. She just makes passing remarks about her being "young and stupid".
  • Old Shame: In-Universe, how she seems to feel about her time with the Brazilian ninjas.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: In the Purgatory, she represents Greed. If you leave her for last, she will also be consumed by Envy.
  • Squishy Wizard: Mao is geared towards magical might and her defenses are (somewhat) lacking.
  • Talking Animal: And only Johnny thinks it's weird.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: No one is ever surprised at the giant talking cat walking around...except Johnny. In either ending Johnny even comments on how while Mao is now a popular actress who's won several awards, no one seems to notice she's a cat. But then again, this is Shadow Hearts.

    Hildegarde "Hilda" Valentine

Voiced by: Rie Kanda (JP) Erica Schroeder (EN)

Appearances: Covenant | From the New World

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Hildegarde_SH3_2857.JPG
She is yet another sibling of the Valentines, a family of vampires. She's the little sister of Joachim and Keith. She and Roger were captured by Roswell scientists when they were mistaken for aliens. Rescued by Johnny's party, she journeys with them at Roger's suggestion. Her bizarre metabolism causes her to fluctuate between Slim Hilda (which is better at magic attacks), Curvy Hilda (which is better at physical attacks), and the Pink Bat (doubled physical attack power at the cost of halving her health and limiting her attack options). She's convinced (or maybe just delusional) that she is some kind of Magical Girl of Truth and Justice.
  • Ascended Extra: Her pink bat form appears in Covenant, as an Optional Boss that grants Joachim his Infinity -1 Sword.
  • Animorphism: Like her brothers, she can transform into a bat depending on how much calories she consumed.
  • Big Brother Worship: As he is the family heir, Hilda is 100% devoted to her older brother Keith.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Earth is Hilda's elemental affinity.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: Wears a black dress with pink shoes.
  • Glass Cannon: Like Joachim's, her Bat form makes her physically stronger at cost of lowering her HP, defense and blocking the use of magic.
  • Green Thumb: Slim Hilda attacks with wires, sun rays and pumpkins.
  • I Know Mortal Kombat: Hilda obtains magazines that teach her new skills. Joachim wrote them.
  • Invisibility: Subverted. Unlike her brothers, Hilda can't turn invisible.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: While sadistic, cocky and aggressive to most when she's slim, it's a slightly different story with her party members.
  • Magical Girl: What she's aiming for. Her weapon is a wand. It's fricking huge when she's Curvy.
  • Magic Wand: In her Slim form. When she's Curvy, it's a Magic Staff.
  • Magically Inept Fighter: Curvy Hilda excels in physical attacks with high defense and HP, but is average with spells.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Normally a bubbly-headed bimbo, but Hilda gets 100% serious when she sees her older brother hurt by her eldest brother. Even in her pre-appearance in Covenant she gets outright vicious towards Joachim for worrying Keith.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: What do you expect from Joachim and Keith's little sister?
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Like her brothers, Hilda is happy to go out and take evil-head on, despite being raised a sheltered aristocrat.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: In the Purgatory, she represents Gluttony. If you leave her for last, she will also be consumed by Envy.
  • Shout-Out: Her Infinity +1 Sword? A Keyblade in all but the name. The description even points out that it could be used "to unlock the keyhole on people's souls".
  • Squishy Wizard: Her default form, Slim Hilda, has high magic power but with little on the way of physical offensive, defense and HP.
  • Split Personality: Hilda changes her shape and personality depending on how many Calories she has absorbed. The "curvy" Hilda is a Shrinking Violet, the "slim" Hilda is more of an Tsundere. Each personality is needed to obtain new skills.
  • Super Mode: Mask Power. By consuming a high amount of either positive or negative calories, Hilda can transform into Slim Mask (her special/magical attack power doubles) or Curvy Mask (physical attack power doubles).
  • Verbal Tic: In the Japanese version, she ends her sentences with "~nya" (except in her Curvy form).
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Unlike Joachim, Hilda can controls her tranformations at will by consuming calories stolen from enemies. Positive calories turn her from Slim form to Pink Bat form to Curvy form, while negative calories have the opposite effect.

    Ricardo Gomez

Voiced by: Masashi Ebara (JP), Sean Schemmel (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Ricardo_Gomez_SH3_9138.JPG
A wandering mariachi who charms all and the stages of Chicago with his songs. He is the secret lover of Al Capone's sister, Edna. He has a soft spot (and weakness) for women, and his guitar actually doubles as a potent weapon—he keeps several guns inside it.

Antagonists

    Lady

Voiced by: Mie Sonozaki (JP)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shadow_hearts_lady_1790.png
Lady is a mysterious woman fueled by malice, the dark power released en masse by Nicolai in Covenant. Seemingly chaotic, capricious, and aimless, she wanders the world infecting people with malice.

She has an uncanny resemblance to Alice Elliot of the first game.

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: The only person she displays any affection for is her serial killer bodyguard. The two are hopelessly devoted to one another.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: She doesn't talk, barely acknowledges people and her response to being given food to eat is to just hold it in her mouth and bob her head; but give her a point of focus to attack and she will casually destroy it. Shania and Natan speak with horror and rage about how she wiped out the rest of their tribe with a blank look on her face and without so much as slowing down from a casual stroll.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Along with Killer and Gilbert, and of the three Lady is easily the most powerful. However she is less a person than a force of nature - hence why the other two drive the plot just as much as her.
  • Came Back Wrong: She actually came back right, but gave up her Will to save Johnny. That turned her into the wrong.
  • Connected All Along: Her true identity is Grace Garland, Johnny's sister, who was killed along with her brother in a car accident. Their father acquired the ÉmigrĂ© Manuscript to bring them back, though the ritual was only partly successful; to bring back Johnny, Grace transferred her will to him and absorbed the malice herself, giving her brother life but leaving her a malicious Empty Shell in the process.
  • Cute Mute: She's sweet when she's not killing people or trying to cause The End of the World as We Know It, honest.
  • Despair Event Horizon: When Killer dies.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Her disconnect from the world very closely mirrors severe autism - to the point she does not talk, does not responde to people and barely comprehends so much as eating food.
  • Final Boss: Is the final adversary in the game, alongside Malice Umbral, which she summons in a fit of rage after she fails to revive Killer.
  • Glass Cannon: During the final fight, Lady is invincible as long as the Malice Umbral is still alive, and she along with it can dish out punishments after punishments upon the party if not carefully prepared. After the Umbral is down, though, she'll die in one hit.
  • Half-Identical Twins: Given by the in-game pictures, they looked identical as young children save for their hair color.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: When their father and Marlow resurrected them, only Grace's case was successful while Johnny had no Will left to re-create his soul. She gave him all of hers, and so the Malice consumed her, transforming her into Lady.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Lady is Grace's body puppeteered by a sentient mass of Malice, and doesn't know how to act human at all.
  • Intimate Healing: Exactly why kissing people heals them (and infects them with Malice to boot) is never explained.
  • Kiss of Death: Downplayed. Kissing a health person will only infect them with Malice, which will slowly consume them. As she does to Shania in the bad ending.
  • Kiss of Life: Downplayed. Her kiss can revive and/or heal people who are about to die, but also infect them with Malice. Those kissed become more powerful, but also unstable and violent.
  • Lady of War: She moves gracefully and attacks from a distance when she fights.
  • Male Gaze: Her breasts are emphasized in the shots and in her outfits.
  • Mercy Kill: Given her Heroic Sacrifice and that she's a Soulless Shell... yeah, this is basically what is happening with her.
  • Morality Pet: Killer's drive to keep her safe is his most prominent virtue. Given she breaks down and frantically attempts to bring him back to life upon his eventual death, it's reciprocated.
  • No Social Skills: She doesn't even know how to eat properly. Killer tries to teach her though.
  • Non-Elemental: Like Johnny, Lady don't have an elemental affinity.
  • Non-Malicious Monster; She acts based only on animal instinct, with her attempt to open the Gate and possibly causing The End of the World as We Know It being a side effect of her attempts to return to her home, the Malice World. The only time she acts out of intentional desire to harm is when she's trying to avenge Killer.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: "Lady" is a nickname given to her by Killer. Later subverted, as she is Grace Garland.
  • Obliviously Evil: Zigzagged, she spreads malice intentionally, but she is Malice. She spreads evil with all the spite of rain spreading moisture.
  • Soulless Shell: The only thing that motivates her at all is Malice. That is until Killer dies and she can't resurrect him a second time.
  • The Corrupter/ The Corruption: She manages to be both since she is not just spreading Malice, she is Malice incarante. Her merest touch super-charges people with evil - empowering them, but also tainting their spirits.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Upon realizing Killer is dead and can't be revived a second time
  • The Voiceless: Except for two moments.

    Killer

Voiced by: Kouji Ishii (JP), Matt Hoverman (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shadow_hearts_killer_4341.png
A serial killer on the lam. When he was near death, his life was saved by a mysterious, nameless woman, to whom Killer rededicated the life she had saved to protecting. He named her "Lady." Though he knows little of Lady's motives, he is devoted to discovering them and making them come true, no matter what they are.

He has a striking physical resemblance to Yuri of the first two games.

    Professor Gilbert

Voiced by: Scott Rayow (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gilbert_shadow_hearts_1519.jpg

  • And There Was Much Rejoicing: Downplayed. His students celebrated when he was kicked out of Arkham University.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Along with Lady and Killer, and of the three, Gilbert is the one with an actual plan.
  • Dark Is Evil: Gilbert is a villain who wants to spread Malice in the world, his elemental affinity is Darkness, and he summons monsters from another realm to fight.
  • Devil in Plain Sight: He's revealed as evil when seen the second time.
  • Evil Feels Good: He thinks this and he wants to share it with the world...
  • Evil Genius: He does have a doctorate.
  • Evil Teacher: Works as a teacher at Arkham University and is hated by everyone there.
  • Expy: He could pass for The Penguin's twin brother.
  • Giant Hands of Doom: His Malice infected form is a giant hand with a human face on its palm.
  • Gonk: His overall appearance only makes it easier to foreshadow his evil intentions.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Killer doesn't particularly care for him, and Lady doesn't even acknowledge his existence.
  • Hated by All: Neither his students, the faculty staff or even Lady and Killer like him.
  • Mad Scientist: Inventor at both Arkham and Roswell. He has a secret laboratory in the former, where he creates monsters and puts them in cages.
  • Mask of Sanity: Gilbert never has a break-down, instead he acts as if he is a good-Samaritan, even as he is feeding people to monsters. At end-game we find out why: he views spreading Malice as a charity and has clearly been off his rocker since the first moment you met him.
  • The Napoleon: He stands about 3 feet tall.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: Gilbert cannot fight by himself, so he uses monsters instead. Subverted after entering the Gate, where he manages to gain enough power by accumulating Malice and transforms into a monster.
  • Obliviously Evil: At the very end we find out he has actually been delusional the entire time - equating Malice to spiritual fullfillment.
  • Obviously Evil: You really didn't see that one coming?
  • One-Winged Angel: Malice Gilbert, a levitating monstrosity that has Gilbert's withered face, complete with a swollen growth overtaking his right eye, in the center of a giant clawed hand and various limbs hanging out of it like tumors.
  • Purple Is Powerful: As you can tell by the image above, he's always decked out in an outfit consisting of various purples. Even Gilbert's monster form has a sickly shade of lavender for his skin tone.
  • Role Reprise: Scott Rayow returns for playing a Big Bad of Shadow Hearts, though through Gilbert he is now playing the Obviously Evil type instead of a Well Intentioned Extremist.
  • Summon Magic: While not a fighter, Gilbert can open portals and summon monsters to fight for him.

    Roy McManus
Al Capone's rival mafia boss.
  • Arc Villain: He is the central antagonist of Chicago and Vegas arcs.
  • The Don: He is the leader of one of mafia gangs in Chicago that rivals Capone.
  • If I Can't Have You…: Kills Edna because she's in love with Ricardo.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: McManus prefers to have his henchmen do the dirty work for him.
  • The Unfought: Malice Edna kills his henchmen and Al Capone deals with him himself to avenge her.
