[[quoteright:269:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/JohnnyGarland.jpg]]
Johnny is a teenage boy who runs his own detective agency. He lost his father and older sister in an accident three years ago, along with a portion of his memories. He was supposed to take over his father's business, but opted to become a detective to find out what really happened in the accident. When the story begins, he's asked by a strange man named Gilbert to find a missing man named Marlow. When Johnny witnesses Marlow being eaten by an otherworldly monster, he realizes that this case just might be more than he bargained for.
----
* AmnesiacHero: Due to a traffic accident when he was a kid there are noticeable chunks of his memory missing, to say nothing of how much time he lost while in the following coma.
* BadPowersGoodPeople: He can manipulate Malice, which is formed from hatred and anger, but Johnny is a good guy.
* ContinuityNod: It's Anastasia's camera.
%%* DisappearedDad
* DoubleWeapon: [[spoiler:While in his Awaker form. Eat your heart out Darth Maul.]]
* EnemyScan: With a camera. There is a side-quest built around collecting the snap-shots of the game's monsters.
* IAmWho: [[spoiler:Johnny is the first successful human revival attempt from the Emigre Manuscript who hasn't become a mindless monster in the process... but there are some side effects.]]
* IdiotHair: While he's not stupid, just naive. But look at him, that's a very noticeable ahoge!
* KnifeNut: Initially starts off fighting with a knife.
* LaserBlade: Can form one from his knife with Malice. [[spoiler:There's a good reason for that.]]
* ManaDrain: Stock Drain. Fear the stock-draining prowess of Johnny's vacuum cleaner!
* MissingMom: Implied. His mother isn't even mentioned in the game.
* MrFanservice: [[spoiler:As Awaker, he becomes a well-built young man who is even less clothed than Lady.]]
* NonElemental: All of his attack skills have no element.
* OccultBlueEyes [[spoiler:As the Awaker.]]
* OlderThanTheyLook: [[spoiler: He's actually 21 years old, but he lost 5 years between his death and resurrection. Awaker reflects his true age.]]
* OnlySaneMan: Since he hasn't any [[spoiler: conscious]] encounters with the supernatural before witnessing Marlow's death by the monster, he's rather weirded out by the strange creatures and some of his teammates.
%%* ParentalAbandonment
* PrivateDetective: Runs a detective agency, and implies most of the cases he's hired for are tracking down lost pets, and jumps at the call when Gilbert hires him to track someone simply because it's different than the normal stuff that private detectives do. (Sadly, in RealLife, they're almost ''never'' hired to investigate actual crimes.)
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: [[spoiler:The Awaker, Johnny's true form, is hostile to his allies at first, but he ultimately menages to control it's powers.]]
* SupportingProtagonist: Played straight for the first two-thirds, then subverted once you reach the Garland Mansion. [[spoiler:When your sister is the BigBad, you aren't "supporting" any more.]]
* TraumaInducedAmnesia: Johnny believes the cause is the car accident where he lost his family. [[spoiler:What he remembers is partially true, but the accident was just the catalyst. His memory loss stems from dying and later being resurrected, almost becoming a SoullessShell if not for his sister Grace giving him all her Will.]]

!!!'''Voiced by:''' Ryoko Nagata (JP), Kelly Ray (EN)
[[quoteright:210:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Shania_SH3_358.JPG]]
She is a Garvoy tribe priestess and warrior woman. With her bodyguard Natan always at her side, Shania wanders the country slaying the demons that emerge from the "Window"--the very thing that ended Marlow's life. She is blessed with the power of Fusion, the ability to borrow the power of Nature Spirits for use in her hunt. She saves Johnny's life and in turn Johnny asks to accompany her in the hopes that they will find Gilbert.
----
* AnAxeToGrind: Tomahawks, actually.
* BoobsOfSteel: Shania is well endowed and the strongest physical fighter, being the ActionGirl shapeshifter of that game. Played for laughs when Johnny first meets her. Follow the arrow.
* CuteMonsterGirl: All of her fusion forms.
* DarkIsNotEvil: As the game's Fusion-user, it's her innate element. She's also the second main character.
* DarkSkinnedBlond: Her tanned skin contrasts with her almost bleach-blond hair.
* DualWielding: A pair of tomahawks.
* HornedHumanoid: Tatan'Ka, her second Fusion, has bull-like horns.
* MaleGaze: The camera from Johnny's view pans to her breasts when he wakes up after falling unconscious at Marlow's apartment.
* MsFanservice: When she does a BattleStrip for every fusion, what do you expect?
* PowerFloats: When transformed into La Sirene, Shania can float.
* PowerTattoo: Shania gets a new tattoo each time she undergoes a Soul-Pact.
* {{Revenge}}: Lady killed her whole tribe and since then she has been hunting her to kill her.
* SevenDeadlySins: In the Purgatory, she represents Wrath, as she is driven by revenge. If you leave her for last, she will also be consumed by Envy.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Possibly unintentional, but Johnny spells her name as "she-nai-ya" during cut-scenes.
* {{Stripperific}}: Heck, she ''strips'' before fusing!
* ThePowerOfTheSun: Her final fusion. [[spoiler: Maxing its statues is necessary to get the good ending]].
* VoluntaryShapeshifter: Fuses with nature spirits to take on their forms and abilities.
* WhamShot: [[spoiler:The bad ending only differs in one detail from the good ending -- Shania isn't there when Johnny leaves the agency. Then the camera leads us to her, on top of a skyscraper as a storm brews, and she opens her Malice-red eyes.]]
* WingedHumanoid: Thunderbird, her first Fusion, is a purple angel-like creature.

Shania's quiet and extremely protective bodyguard. He uses GunsAkimbo and often calls Shania "Princess". He doesn't speak much, but is actually a warm-hearted person and in the few times he does speak, he usually explains things to Johnny.
----
* BlowYouAway: His element.
* BottomlessMagazines: never run out of bullets.
* DeathFromAbove: "Soul Valet".
* {{Expy}}: Natan is very similar to ''Franchise/StreetFighter'''s Thunder Hawk, except he fight with guns.
* TheGenericGuy: Natan has no motivation at all besides "Protect Shania".
* GunFu: It's even the name of his special ability.
* GunsAkimbo: Dual wields the whole time.
* ProudWarriorRaceGuy: As a hunter from an American Indian tribe, it comes with the territory.
* SevenDeadlySins: In the Purgatory, he represents Sloth. If you leave him for last, he will also be consumed by Envy.
* TheStoic: You can probably count his lines of dialogue on your fingers and toes.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Not very much covers him, no matter what the season.
* WorthyOpponent: Considers the Legendary UMA this.

[[quoteright:210:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Frank_Goldfinger_8450.JPG]]
A hyperactive and quite hammy ninja hailing from... Brazil? He was the only survivor of a plane crash and landed in the jungles of Brazil. After wandering for a week he stumbled upon the "Ninja Hideaway", a secret ninja village that has existed there for 300 years. He is a subordinate of Mao, tends to talk in the third person, and often calls Johnny "Boy", much to Johnny's chagrin. He is dedicated to protecting the safety of the States and is on a mission to find out Gilbert's true intentions. He makes his swords out of anything he can find and mount to a hilt.
----
* {{Expy}}: Of Joachim from ''Covenant''. Both being BoisterousBruiser [[IdiotHero idiot]] super-heroes and the physically strongest party member of their respective games. Both Joachim and Frank can pick items lying on the ground to use as weapons and face their mentor in their endgame sidequest.
* HighlyVisibleNinja: Even extends to a cloth he uses to hide. They aren't supposed to have the American flag on it.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: He puts a cactus on a hilt. He puts a firework on a hilt. He puts ''a larger sword'' on ''another'' hilt. His InfinityPlusOneSword? '''''[[spoiler:A shishkebob with food on it.]]'''''
* LargeHam: A given for Shadow Hearts, but he stands out even in this cast.
* LightEmUp: Oddly enough this is his element.
* McNinja: A Polish-American ninja trained by Brazilians.
* MightyGlacier: The toughest member of the party outside of Shania's fusion, and also the slowest.
* {{Ninja}}: Not a very good one, but he is one.
%%* NumberTwo: To Mao.
* SevenDeadlySins: In the Purgatory, he represents Pride. If you leave him for last, he will also be consumed by Envy.
* SharpDressedMan: Before he joins the party, he wanders around in a nice blue suit with a pocket square.
* ShownTheirWork: A Brazilian Ninja might seem off, but when Japan's largest non-Asian minority are Brazilians, it makes more sense. Sorta.
* ThirdPersonPerson: Frank always talks in the third person.

[[folder:Mao]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/{{Kujira}} (JP), Creator/MarcThompson (EN)
[[quoteright:210:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Mao_SH3_3977.JPG]]
A giant female talking cat who also happens to be a {{drunken master}}. She's currently serving as bodyguard and second-in-command to the infamous gangster, Al Capone. Frank refers to her as "Master". Mao is an aspiring actress, and is working on a kung-fu flick in her spare time at Purramount Pictures.
----
* CatsAreMean: Mao can be rough and harsh. She has little tolerance for the people she dislike (She bullies Elliot Ness until he gives up his precious magazine and then she admits liking doing that because she can't stand law enforcers) or the ones she perceives as imcompetent or useless (Frank is shown to be really afraid of her). Oddly enough, Mao doesn't seem to (really) mind to be called "Master Meow" by Johnny.
* CrossdressingVoices: English speaking players may be surprised when they first hear feminine pronouns applied to the ultra suave voiced passive-aggressive gangster.
* TheDragon: To Al Capone. A non-villainous example as, in this game, Capone is portrayed as a nice guy, contrasting his rival, Roy [=McManus=].
* DrunkenMaster: Her weapons are different vintages of alcohol.
* EyesAlwaysShut: The few times she opens them they're revealed to be yellow.
* MakingASplash: Her element. Also, to obtain cat coins, Mao has to kill enemas with her water-based Personal Skill.
* MegaNeko: She is as tall as Johnny.
* NinjaPirateZombieRobot: She's a hard-drinking talking martial artist cat who aspires to be a movie actress, and she acts as Al Capone's bodyguard and second-in-command. She's also training Frank.
* NoodleIncident: Mao is very adamant when it comes to talk about how she met Frank in the Brazilian jungle or what happened in the Sushie Bar at Rio de Janeiro. She just makes passing remarks about her being "young and stupid".
* OldShame: InUniverse, how she seems to feel about her time with the Brazilian ninjas.
* SevenDeadlySins: In the Purgatory, she represents Greed. If you leave her for last, she will also be consumed by Envy.
* SquishyWizard: Mao is geared towards magical might and her defenses are (somewhat) lacking.
* TalkingAnimal: And only Johnny thinks it's weird.
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: No one is ever surprised at the giant talking cat walking around...except Johnny. [[spoiler: In either ending Johnny even comments on how while Mao is now a popular actress who's won several awards, ''no one'' seems to notice she's a cat.]] But then again, this ''is'' Shadow Hearts.

!!!'''Appearances:''' ''Covenant'' | ''From the New World''
[[quoteright:210:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Hildegarde_SH3_2857.JPG]]
She is yet another sibling of the Valentines, a family of vampires. She's the little sister of Joachim and Keith. She and Roger were captured by Roswell scientists when they were mistaken for aliens. Rescued by Johnny's party, she journeys with them at Roger's suggestion. Her bizarre metabolism causes her to fluctuate between Slim Hilda (which is better at magic attacks), Curvy Hilda (which is better at physical attacks), and the Pink Bat (doubled physical attack power at the cost of halving her health and limiting her attack options). She's convinced (or maybe just delusional) that she is some kind of Magical Girl of Truth and Justice.
----
* AscendedExtra: Her pink bat form appears in ''Covenant'', as BonusBoss that grants Joachim his InfinityMinusOneSword.
* {{Animorphism}}: Like her brothers, she can transform into a bat depending on how much calories she consumed.
* BigBrotherWorship: As he is the family heir, Hilda is 100% devoted to her older brother Keith.
* DishingOutDirt: Earth is Hilda's elemental affinity.
* ElegantGothicLolita: Wears a black dress with pink shoes.
* GlassCannon: Like Joachim's, her Bat form makes her physically stronger at cost of lowering her HP, defense and blocking the use of magic.
* GreenThumb: Slim Hilda attacks with wires, sun rays and pumpkins.
* IKnowMortalKombat: Hilda obtains magazines that teach her new skills. [[spoiler:Joachim wrote them.]]
* {{Invisibility}}: Subverted. Unlike her brothers, Hilda can't turn invisible.
* LovableAlphaBitch: While sadistic, cocky and aggressive to most when she's slim, it's a slightly different story with her party members.
* MagicalGirl: What she's aiming for. Her weapon is a wand. It's fricking ''huge'' when she's Curvy.
* MagicWand: In her Slim form. When she's Curvy, it's a MagicStaff.
* MagicallyIneptFighter: Curvy Hilda excels in physical attacks with high defense and HP, but is average with spells.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Normally a bubbly-headed bimbo, but Hilda gets 100% serious when she sees her older brother hurt by her eldest brother. Even in her pre-appearance in ''Covenant'' she gets outright vicious towards Joachim for worrying Keith.
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: What do you expect from Joachim and Keith's little sister?
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Like her brothers, Hilda is happy to go out and take evil-head on, despite being raised a sheltered aristocrat.
* SevenDeadlySins: In the Purgatory, she represents Gluttony. If you leave her for last, she will also be consumed by Envy.
* ShoutOut: Her InfinityPlusOneSword? [[spoiler: A '''''[[Franchise/KingdomHearts Keyblade]]''''' in all but the name. The description even points out that it could be used "to unlock the keyhole on people's souls"]].
* SquishyWizard: Her default form, Slim Hilda, has high magic power but with little on the way of physical offensive, defense and HP.
* SplitPersonality: Hilda changes her shape and personality depending on how many Calories she has absorbed. The "curvy" Hilda is a ShrinkingViolet, the "slim" Hilda is more of an {{Tsundere}}. Each personality is needed to obtain new skills.
* SuperMode: MaskPower. By consuming a high amount of either positive or negative calories, Hilda can transform into Slim Mask (her special/magical attack power doubles) or Curvy Mask (physical attack power doubles).
* VerbalTic: In the Japanese version, she ends her sentences with "~nya" (except in her Curvy form).
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Unlike Joachim, Hilda can controls her tranformations at will by consuming calories stolen from enemies. Positive calories turn her from Slim form to Pink Bat form to Curvy form, while negative calories have the opposite effect.

[[folder:Lady]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MieSonozaki (JP)
[[quoteright:263:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shadow_hearts_lady_1790.png]]
Lady is a mysterious woman fueled by malice, the dark power released en masse by Nicolai in ''Covenant''. Seemingly chaotic, capricious, and aimless, she wanders the world infecting people with malice.

She has an uncanny resemblance to Alice Elliot of the first game.
----
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: The only person she displays any affection for is her serial killer bodyguard. The two are hopelessly devoted to one another.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: She doesn't talk, barely acknowledges people and her response to being given food to eat is to just hold it in her mouth and bob her head; but give her a point of focus to attack and she will casually destroy it. Shania and Natan speak with horror and rage about how she wiped out the rest of their tribe with a blank look on her face and without so much as slowing down from a casual stroll.
* BigBadDuumvirate: Along with Killer and Gilbert, and of the three Lady is easily the most powerful. However she is less a person than a force of nature - hence why the other two drive the plot just as much as her.
* CameBackWrong: [[spoiler:She actually came back right, but gave up her Will to save Johnny. That turned her into the wrong.]]
* ConnectedAllAlong: [[spoiler:Her true identity is Grace Garland, Johnny's sister, who was killed along with her brother in a car accident. Their father acquired the Émigré Manuscript to bring them back, though the ritual was only partly successful; to bring back Johnny, Grace transferred her will to him and absorbed the malice herself, giving her brother life but leaving her a malicious EmptyShell in the process.]]
* CuteMute: She's sweet when she's not killing people or trying to cause TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt, honest.
* DespairEventHorizon: When [[spoiler:Killer dies.]]
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Her disconnect from the world very closely mirrors severe autism - to the point she does not talk, does not responde to people and barely comprehends so much as eating food.
* HalfIdenticalTwins: [[spoiler:Given by the in-game pictures, they looked identical as young children save for their hair color.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:When their father and Marlow resurrected them, only Grace's case was successful while Johnny had no Will left to re-create his soul. She gave him all of hers, and so the Malice consumed her, transforming her into Lady.]]
* HumanoidAbomination: [[spoiler:Lady is Grace's body puppeteered by a sentient mass of Malice, and doesn't know how to act human at all.]]
* IntimateHealing: Exactly why kissing people heals them (and infects them with Malice to boot) is never explained.
* KissOfDeath: Downplayed. Kissing a health person will only infect them with Malice, which will slowly consume them. [[spoiler:As she does to Shania in the bad ending.]]
* KissOfLife: Downplayed. Her kiss can revive and/or heal people who are about to die, but also infect them with Malice. Those kissed become more powerful, but also unstable and violent.
* LadyOfWar: She moves gracefully and attacks from a distance when she fights.
* MaleGaze: Her breasts are emphasized in the shots and in her outfits.
* MercyKill: Given her HeroicSacrifice and that she's a SoullessShell... yeah, this is basically what is happening with her.
* MoralityPet: Killer's drive to keep her safe is his most prominent virtue. Given she [[spoiler:breaks down and frantically attempts to bring him back to life upon his eventual death]], it's reciprocated.
* NoSocialSkills: She doesn't even know how to eat properly. Killer tries to teach her though.
* NonElemental: Like Johnny, Lady don't have an elemental affinity.
* NonMaliciousMonster; [[spoiler:She acts based only on animal instinct, with her attempt to open the Gate and possibly causing TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt being a side effect of her attempts to return to her home, the Malice World. The only time she acts out of intentional desire to harm is when she's trying to avenge Killer.]]
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: "Lady" is a nickname given to her by Killer. Later subverted, [[spoiler:as she is Grace Garland.]]
* ObliviouslyEvil: Zigzagged, she spreads malice intentionally, but she ''is'' Malice. She spreads evil with all the spite of rain spreading moisture.
* SoullessShell: The only thing that motivates her at all is Malice. [[spoiler:That is until Killer dies and [[BerserkButton she can't resurrect him a second time]].]]
%%* {{Stripperific}}
%%* ThongOfShielding
* TheCorrupter/ TheCorruption: She manages to be both since she is not just spreading Malice, she is Malice incarante. Her merest touch super-charges people with evil - empowering them, but also tainting their spirits.

A serial killer on the lam. When he was near death, his life was saved by a mysterious, nameless woman, to whom Killer rededicated the life she had saved to protecting. He named her "Lady." Though he knows little of Lady's motives, he is devoted to discovering them and making them come true, no matter what they are.

He has a striking physical resemblance to Yuri of the first two games.
----
* BadassLongcoat Its RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver, and comes complete with a HighCollarOfDoom.
* BigBadDuumvirate: Along with Lady and Gilbert, and of the three, Killer is the most emotionally invested.
* CostumeCopycat: Whether it's deliberate on his part is unknown, but he has an uncanny resemblance to Yuri despite not being related to him in the slightest.
* DeclarationOfProtection: If Lady wants to destroy the world, that's fine with him, he'll protect her.
* TheDragon: The chief enforcer of the bad guys.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: Know only as "Killer"; his real name in never revealed.
