Appearance at the beginning of the series
As Red Arm in his childhood

The 15-year-old protagonist of the series, Allen is a young man who was born with a deformed red left arm with a cross embedded in the hand. His biological parents abandoned him because of this, and Allen was taken in and raised by a man named Mana Walker. When Mana died, Allen was overcome with grief and the Millennium Earl appeared before him with the offer to bring Mana back from the dead. Allen accepted the offer and Mana's soul was trapped in the metal body of an akuma. Mana cursed Allen and tried to kill him to wear his skin, but it turns out that Allen's deformed arm is an Innocence, which then activated and destroyed Mana's akuma body. Allen was later taken under the wing of General Cross, who trained him how to be an "Exorcist" (a person who can use an Innocence to fight and destroy akuma). When the story begins, Allen is on his way to find the Black Order and join the organization.

Allen's Innocence is a "parasite-type", one of the rarest Innocences. Due to Mana's curse, Allen's left eye is branded with a pentacle. However, with this eye Allen is the only one who can see who is an akuma in a human skin, as well as being able to see the tortured soul trapped within. He is a cheerful, kind young man who loves everyone, and has made it his mission to release akuma-captured souls from their pain and suffering.

Allen's Innocence is called the Crowned Clown. In early chapters, it starts as a massive claw; during the Ark Arc, it upgrades to body armor and several new abilities. After achieving General-level synchronization, its final form is revealed: a massive sword that only harms the evil within someone.

    A — E
  • All-Loving Hero: Allen simply loves everyone and wishes to protect them all. He even cares about saving the Noah.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: His strange left arm led to him being abandoned as a baby and looked upon with disgust and fear until Mana took him in. Allen got this again when it was discovered he is/will become the 14th.
  • Amnesiac Hero: As revealed by Nea, who states Allen lost his memories of him and his past before he became younger.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Has his innocence arm destroyed by Tikki. However, thanks to his Innocence wanting him to live, its particles enter his body and seal his heart puncture and linger as a fog. Allen reforms it, stronger than before, when realizing that he s not just living to fight the akuma and save their souls, but for mankind as well.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: There is a brief scene in the manga where he gets upset arguing with Kanda as usual, and simply gets over it when Miranda offers him candy.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Death Orbs. It's Allen's strongest technique but it uses all his stamina in the process. As a result, he is only seen using it once in volume 19.
  • Backhanded Apology: Deconstructed. In the Alma Karma arc, Allen is stopped by Link from facing the Third Exorcists who are all taken by the Noah. Allen tells Link he shouldn't have done that which depresses him. When Link tries to talk with him again, Allen is the one apologizing about what he said casually only to anger Link as he realizes he was the one at fault for stopping Allen.
  • Badass Adorable: A cute young man who is an exorcist.
  • The Bait: Not by choice. The Noah use him to lure out Apocryphos after awakening the Fourteenth.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Even though Allen was a dog, it was Red's first friend in the circus to the point of breaking into tears when he licks his deformed arm.
  • Beware the Nice Ones:
    • Allen is a cheerful, kind young man who loves everyone, and has made it his mission to not only save humanity, but also release akuma-captured souls from their pain and suffering. But do NOT get him angry, because he will make the offender very, VERY sorry.
    • On a more humorous note, Allen's shown to have a "dark-and-devious" side to his personality that comes out if sufficiently annoyed; as seen in his spats with Kanda and his Card Sharp tenancies. Heck, he even blackmailed a superior officer one time.
  • BFS: During the climax of his fight with Tyki in the Ark arc, thanks to surpassing the 100% synchronization rate with his Innocence, Allen gains the ability to transform his left arm into a huge, blunt sword strikingly similar to the one the Millennium Earl has but with the colors inverted (a white sword with black borders) with the ability to purge the evil of others, likely due to the fact that he's the host of Nea's memories and Nea was shown to be holding the Earl's sword in one flashback. Despite its size, Allen has no problem brandishing the sword and fighting with it, and becomes his main weapon after that.
  • Becoming the Mask: The trauma after Mana's death resulted in Allen trying to act like him. He never realizes it after a timeskip in the series taking place after the the Order's destruction. Cross himself notes it and tells Allen in a message to stop wearing "Mana's mask".
  • Big Eater: To a truly absurd degree. Justified, though— Parasite Type Innocence uses a lot of calories.
  • Birds of a Feather: With Lenalee. Both are nice people with a penchant of having Chronic Hero Syndrome, and think of their comrades as family. Both also happen to attract a significant number of people of the opposite sex.
  • Bishie Sparkle: He can actually exude bishie sparkles at will to manipulate people and get what he wants, most notably with Komurin (which is even more amazing, considering that it's a male robot).
  • Blemished Beauty: Allen has a large, unique scar on the left side of his face. On top of that, his left arm is red, has deformed fingers and black fingernails. Leaving that aside, he's a very pretty young man.
  • Broken Hero: He's nice, cheerful, idealistic, and really, really cute, but his life has been kind of traumatic.
  • Brought Down to Normal: When his Innocence Cross is destroyed facing Suman, Allen becomes unable to fight again but still wishes to regain it with his cursed eye still intact.
  • Butt-Monkey: Poor kid REALLY can't catch a break, whether it be actual misfortune, getting comedically hurt, or being the butt of someone's joke.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Allen can get drunk from eating alcoholic chocolates. There's a reason he's forbidden from touching alcohol.
  • Celibate Hero: In an omake "interview" with him, he claims to be this, saying that he has no time for such things.
  • Cessation of Existence: The more Nea appears in his body, the more Allen is close to disappearing.
  • Character Catchphrase: He tends to say "Bring eternal peace to this unfortunate Akuma!" while, before or after destroying one. It goes to the point he says it at the end of the previews of the anime.
  • Character Development: While Allen is friendly towards others, he constantly clashes with his allies as he is determined to save the Akuma's souls. However, when Allen is about develop the Crown Clown, he decides he will cherish both humans and Akumas. Hoshino herself said in Charagray that the biggest moment of Allen's growth was when decides to leave the Order despite still calling it his home.
  • Chick Magnet: Doesn't do too bad with the ladies. Road is smitten with Allen, which is awkward when you consider she's a Noah who once stabbed him in the eye For the Evulz. Rohfa adores him. For is implied to have a bit of a crush on him. And then there's the strong implication that Lenalee is attracted to him.
  • Child Prodigy: He is the youngest exorcist who has ever reached his Innocence's Critical Point.
  • The Chosen One: Twofold, though both have only brought him suffering.
    • Allen is the chosen host for the 14th Noah: Nea D. Campbell/Nea Walker, his own Evil Uncle. Being the host for the Fourteenth though has left him with a target on his back, as the Black Order higher ups want him dead, half of the Noah want Nea dead for killing them 35 years prior, the Millenium Earl both wants to reunite with Nea and kill him, Lvellie has his own plans for the 14th, and even Cross threatened to kill Allen when he was still "Red" if he got close to Mana out of fear of Nea and Mana recombining.
    • According to Apocryphos, Allen is the chosen wielder of the Heart of Innocence, the one thing capable of killing the Millenium Earl. It's for this very reason however Apocryphos has gone out of his way to try and ruin Allen's life so he can drive him into a corner and then absorb him, being the one responsible for Mana's Death of Personality when Allen was still "Red", framing Allen for "killing" Link so that he can't return to the Black Order, regularly attempting to push Allen to the point of exhaustion so he can't escape him, and refusing to let him die no matter how much Allen may want to.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: He wishes to save everyone — humans and Akuma alike. If anyone is in danger while he's around, count on him to jump in and save them.
  • Circus Brat: Emphasis on the "brat" part, at least prior to his adoption. But then, his life at the circus wasn't exactly what you would call pleasant.
  • Cope by Pretending: His formal personality is just a way to deal with Mana's death as he is actually trying to imitate him.
  • Creepy Crosses: His Innocence is a stone-like cross embedded in the back of his left hand. On top of it, his entire left arm is red and creepy-looking.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: The Sword of Exorcism he develops out of Crown Clown after exceeding the 100% of synchronization with it is the peak of Allen’s desire to save both Akuma and humans. The sword extinguishes any evil, destroying Akuma (thus freeing them from their suffering) and exorcising the memory of a Noah, turning them into normal humans without killing them. However, the Sword is only useful against what Allen perceives as evil (Akuma and Noah), so if he fights a non-Dark Matter user (like Lavi after Road awakened his Bookman persona in the Ark) the Sword is pretty much useless and won’t do anything against them.
  • Cross Attack: The power of his Innocence can be channeled into a beam of light at the first Invocation which leaves a cross-shaped light behind each target hit. It's capable of hitting and destroying multiple Level 1 Akuma in a single blow.
  • Cursed with Awesome:
    • Literally. Mana's pentacle curse makes Allen the only Exorcist who can see akuma through their human disguises. Specifically, it's the ability to see the souls of akuma. And because when akuma evolve their souls degrade, Allen only sees twisted and trapped souls in captivity. It's actually a terrible curse no one would want, and only made awesome by the fact that Allen is an exorcist and the curse makes him uniquely gifted at his job.
    • To put the matter of the cursed eye in perspective; Lavi, a seasoned exorcist and human recorder, is deeply unsettled when Allen's eye evolves(like an akuma!) and grants people near Allen the ability to see akuma souls as well. Before that happened he thought the curse was a handy ability. He later remarks that he would never want Allen's vision and that he couldn't eat for awhile after the experience. And that was only a Lv. 2 akuma.
"The world as he sees it is hell."
    • Unfortunately, it only gets worse as akuma evolve further. At Lv. 4, all that left of an akuma's soul are fragments. Even Allen is horrified by this - and his cursed eye starts to bleed painfully in reaction to what he sees.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Allen was abandoned, beaten, and such until he met Mana, who died just a few years later.
    • Chapter 232 starts exploring his past, with the start of a long flashback, and god it's not pretty at all. Not only was he exploited, beaten, and abused (both physically and emotionally), there are heavy hints the director was a sexual predator who had his sights on poor Allen.
    • The relationship he shares with his adopted father also takes a darker turn following the above chapters as it is revealed that it was not Mana who adopted Allen, but Allen who adopted Mana. Allen accidentally mind raped the man during his Traumatic Superpower Awakening and felt so guilty about it he made it his mission to keep the broken Mana alive and restore his sanity.
  • Declaration of Protection: While he always fought for Akumas' souls, in the Asian Branch he swears he will devote his life to protecting the humans he loves too. This becomes his motto in the Search for A.W. arc.
  • Defector from Decadence: As of chapter 205, Allen has taken the Ark and left the Order due to disgust with the higher ups and their methods, (and doubts about their intentions). He's essentially gone renegade to find a better way to defeat the Earl.
  • Deus Angst Machina: Happens after he abandons the Order. Just by Nea's awakening, Akumas are summoned to face him. When Allen believes Link was killed, his angst causes the summons of more Akumas.
  • Detect Evil: He can tell humans from demons using his cursed left eye. But the once-human souls of the demons are not pretty to look at. "The world he sees is hell," as one of his comrades comments.
  • Determinator: Allen promised to Mana to never stop walking the path he's chosen until he dies.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: His appearance has changed a lot over the course of the series, particularly in his evolution from cute little boy to pretty young man. It actually makes sense, as he IS aging during the story, and adolescence can result in this.
  • Enemy Within: The 14th Noah. Nea reveals that he actually considered Allen a friend, and that it was Allen himself who offered to be the host for Nea's memories. However, how this seemingly contradictory piece of information fits in with what the audience has been told about Allen's past is yet to be revealed.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: So do Komurin III, maybe Tyki Mikk, as well as Jeryy.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: Allen loves everyone and will put himself in danger to ensure he can save as much people as possible. Even the Akuma and the Noah are not exception to this, as he fights to release the former from their miserable existence and attempted to save Tyki (someone who almost killed him) from the crumbling Ark (albeit because he believed he became a normal human after exorcizing him with his sword). However, only two individuals so far have managed to get his grudge: the Millennium Earl (because he's the one who turned Mana into an Akuma and is the cause of the birth and grief of the Akuma) and Apocryphos (whom he detests cause he apparently killed Cross, even insulting him to his face when he proposed the idea of merging with him). He also came to despise the Third Exorcists for willingly becoming half-Akuma hybrids, but eventually warmed up to them after knowing their circumstances.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While he's really sympathetic to the plight of the Akuma and mercifully kills them to honor Mana, there are some instances where an Akuma has committed acts so malevolent even he forgets about his promise and tries to destroy them with zero remorse. Examples include the time when the Pierrot Akuma mortally wounds Lala and Guzol to get the Innocence of the doll (which enrages Allen so much his anger forces his Innocence to change to a more destructive shape) or when the Level 3s who came with Lulu Bell kill several of the scientists of the Order's lab, with Allen outright saying he will not forgive any of them. Also, the Level 4 Akuma proves to be so hideous and downright horrifying to Allen that he displays no sympathy at all while fighting it, only wanting to destroy the Level 4 as soon as possible.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Hoshino stated that upon doubting that Mana might not have loved him for real, Allen's hairstyle changed to show his pentagram scar provoked by Mana's Akuma in order prove his love to him.
  • Expy: Allen is based on Robin, the main character of one of Hoshino's one-shots.
  • Eye Scream: Besides the way he acquired the curse and accompanying scars on his eye, there's also the time when Road was... having fun... and stabbed him in the eye with a candle.

    F — M
  • Face Death with Dignity: Following Suman's death, his Innocence's destruction and Tyki Mikk threatening him with ripping his heart, Allen instead remains calm making Tyki feel he ruined the entire mood.
  • Facial Markings: He has an unusual mark on the left side of his face that starts as a pentagram on his forehead. This mark indicates that he's been cursed.
  • Fake Memories: All his life, Allen believed he used to be a circus-hand named "Red", who was adopted by a mentally ill man named "Mana Walker", who began calling him "Allen" after his dog with that name died. After Mana died, Allen then met the Millennium Earl and accidentally brought Mana back as an Akuma, who cursed Allen before being killed when Allen's Innocence awoke, with Allen then taken in by Cross Marian. The "Red and Mana" mini-arc however would quickly prove this was not what happened, the only thing that Allen remembered actually occuring being his hair turning white from trauma.
    • "Red" wasn't a circus-hand, he was an indentured servant of the circus that was allegedly sold to the ringmaster shortly after his birth.
    • "Mana Walker" didn't adopt Red, nor did he mistake "Red" for his dog Allen due to mental illness. Red had grown attached to the dog Allen, and bonded with "Mana Campbell" after Allen was killed, with Mana trying to look after Red while Red stopped the Millenium Earl from taking over Mana. After Red went berserk with his innocence however and Mana took the hit to try and stop him, Mana suffered a mix of Laser-Guided Amnesia and Loss of Identity, causing him to genuinely believe Red was "Allen", having transformed from a dog into a human somehow.
    • Mana wasn't revived by the Millenium Earl, nor did Allen's Innocence awaken to protect him from the Akumatized Mana. Thanks to the machinations of Apocryphos, the circus blamed Red for the death of Allen, and he hit his Rage Breaking Point while distraught over seeing Allen's dug up body. His Innocence then awoke from his rage and he nearly killed Cosimov, Allen's actual killer, only for Mana to take the attack while trying to calm Red down, doing so nearly allowing the Earl to take over, with the Fat Suit trying to absorb Mana before Cross stopped it.
    • Cross didn't come across Allen after he killed Mana, Cross had been shadowing Mana for some time, even threatening Red should anything happen to Mana. He however came across the Millenium Earl killing the circus members with Akuma while attempting to kill Red, with Cross inadvertantly saving him before trying to kill Red himself, only being stopped by Timcanpy and Maria, then telling Red to get lost and never go near Mana again, while saying it's his fault this happened. Red then took Allen's body and reburied it before passing out in the snow, his body found by Apocryphos and later by a pair of constables, Red finding the now amnesiac Mana and allowing him to believe he was "Allen" so he could begin trying to rebuild Mana's mind, all while Cross continued shadowing them. At some point after this, Cross brought a now catatonic Red to Mother's place, where he cared for him before he eventually recovered, and took on the name "Allen Walker".
    • One memory Allen refuses to budge on is how Mana died. As he told Kanda, Allen found that Mana passed away in his sleep while they were staying in a church, leading to Allen burying him before being approached by the Millennium Earl, upon which Mana was revived as an Akuma, cursed Allen, and was then slain by Allen's Innocence. As Kanda points out though, that too is likely a fake memory, as Mana is the Millennium Earl beneath the Fat Suit. This prompts Kanda to ask to see Mana's grave, angering Allen enough to cause a fight over the idea of digging it up. Allen only concedes when Kanda points out he too thought Alma Karma was dead but turned out to be wrong, forcing Allen to accept his memory might not be what happened and, if only for the sake of closure, they have to check Mana's "grave". Kanda and Tiedoll proceed to do so, and find the casket beneath Mana's tombstone empty, Kanda verifying it was the casket Allen thought Mana was buried in thanks to the presence of a paper flower Allen said he buried Mana with in lieu of an actual bouquet, meaning either Mana's body was in the casket at some point before leaving, or Allen only thought his body was in there and an empty casket was buried.
  • Final First Hug: Cross Marian gives him one in Hallow's first episode to hide an extra message in case he is killed. Allen also gives one to Lenalee before escaping from the Order.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: It's insane the amount times he and Kanda fought.
  • Fountain of Youth: When he takes over his body for a while, Nea is surprised that Allen's body has gotten younger than when he last saw him.
  • Friendless Background: His time in the circus was horrible due to his The Grotesque hand with the exception of Mana and his dog making him company but not for much time. In the Order, he found valuable friends for the first time ever as he realizes when revealing Crown Clown.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: Crowned Clown comes with a mask but it never does anything.
  • Guilt Complex:
    • Due to his caring nature, Allen tends to blame himself for every Akuma he failed exorcise.
    • He once again blames himself for not trying to get along with the Third Exorcists or try to understand Nea's motives, believing the understanding the latter would give him a better solution to their issues.
  • The Heart: During Allen's tenure at the Black Order, he quickly manages to become this for the people he knows. His general kindness as well as the effects he had on numerous people such as Krory, Miranda, and Timothy made him well liked and cherished. As such, once the Black Order brands him a traitor due to bearing the Fourteeth and he is forced to flee, mostly everyone he knew fell into depression and had to force themselves to keep going, as if they lost apart of themselves with him gone, while simultaneously dreading the idea they may have to hunt down their close friend one day. It reached the point that Lenalee and Marie were willing to risk imprisonment so as to help Kanda escape and help Johnny in finding Allen, since he means that much to them.
  • The Hero: Allen always arrives to protect everyone and he tries to save everyone — humans and Akuma alike.
  • Heroic Wannabe: There are times Allen fails a lot in his missions in regards to save innocent lives like Suman Dark with Kanda calling him out on their first mission that exorcists are not heroes. Allen agrees but still wants to be one.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Allen, The Hero of D.Gray-man, gains the power to turn his left arm into the Sword of Exorcism, which exorcises evil, when his synchronization rate exceeds 100%.
  • Heroic RRoD: When his Innocence breaks while trying to subdue Suman´s Fallen One, followed by his "death" at the hands of Tyki Mikk, which pushes Lenalee far beyond the Despair Event Horizon.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Slowly going this way due to the Fourteenth. It's later culminated in Kanda accidentally turning him full-Noah, and even though he just saved everyone again, the Black Order promptly throws him in prison. And being busted out by Road and Tyki hasn't helped any.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: In the early arcs, Allen is often hit with this when failing to save others as a result but ends up being comforted or corrected by his allies.
  • Hidden Depths: For the most part he's a Messianic Archetype, but turns out to have a devious side, which we see when he tries to charm a robot, and when he's revealed to be a master at cheating at poker. Being a Noah might have something to do with it.
  • Hilariously Abusive Childhood:
    • His abuse and psychological trauma at the hands of his master General Cross is played entirely for laughs. But this is more in the anime with Cross' Adaptational Villainy. Filler, episode 27 was infamous for the villainizing of Cross. In the episode, Cross tells Allen to bring him a lion, which almost gets Allen killed. He throws Allen to legions of Akuma without training him. Has Allen doing manual slave labor to pay for his women. Escaping thugs by throwing Allen to them so they can take their anger out of him instead. And forcing Allen to gamble, and stealing his money when he's already living with a rich lover in India at the time. Allen also mentions battling with depression due to Cross, and only finding peace after meeting Narain in India. Allen also states that given his relationship with Cross, who is a general, he never believed generals could be good people.
    • In the manga, the trauma Allen suffers appear to be debts, and possible Training from Hell. Allen mentions he gambled to make money if he and Cross were really broke. This episode shows Cross having Allen doing slave labour, and forcing him to gamble even if he was dating a rich woman.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: While fighting the Level 4 Akuma of Paris, Allen decides to mentally call his Sword of Exorcism to impale himself and the Akuma to a wall. He hopes that, since the Sword is harmless for humans, he’ll be fine, but since he’s hosting a Noah on his body, the Sword ends up harming him too. Worse, the Innocence manages to awaken Nea for a few seconds, who then delivers a message to the Earl using the Akuma as a device to tell him he has finally awakened. This kickstarts the events of the next arc, who suppose a disaster for the Order and later forces Allen to flee from it thanks to Apocryphos.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: Though all the Innocence is referred to as a holy substance that purges all the evil, Allen takes this one step further thanks to his desire to save the soul of the Akuma, which makes his abilities centered in the use of holy attacks against the Akuma and the Noah that often take the shape of crosses (a symbol of holiness) when executed. His Sword of Exorcism takes this a step further, as it basically exorcizes and destroys anything Allen considers evil (that amounts to almost everyone on the side of the Earl).
  • Homeless Hero:After being attacked by Apocryphos, Allen escapes from the Order and starts renting rooms as he avoids others.
  • Hope Bringer: Lampshaded by Lenalee and Lavi. Once he joins the exorcists in the Noah's Ark, Lavi notices he can see hope when following Allen.
  • Humans Are Special: What he tells Tykki for thinking that he's harmless without his Innocence arm:
"Tyki Mikk… you don't understand exorcists. You think we're like normal humans, that we're harmless if you destroy our anti-akuma weapons. You think we have no powers of our own. But what you should really fear is the human in us. Innocence provides the power, but it's an exorcist's human heart that makes him deadly."
  • Hyperactive Metabolism: Directly lampshaded and justified both in interviews with the mangaka and in-series. Apparently, Allen has no problems eating and digesting the gigantic towers of food he eats, since just simply activating his innocence burns a huge amount of calories.
  • Ideal Hero: Kind, helpful, idealistic, caring, forgiving and self-sacrificing.
  • I'm Having Soul Pains: Early in the series, he has several problems with his cursed eye and his left hand. He claims he is used to it but it only concerns Lenalee for hiding his pain.
  • Ineffectual Loner: For the entire "Goodbye to A.W." arc, Allen tries to fight Nea all by himself, negating all help Kanda and Johnny try to give, believing he could kill them accidentally should the Noah revives. He eventually gives up and feels like a happy person again.
  • In-Series Nickname: Kanda calls him "Beansprout" (because of his relatively short height) often.
  • In Vino Veritas: In the "Kuro no Bansankai" Special Drama CD, Allen shows his behavior when he gets drunk. He becomes very vicious and destructive, and causes massive property damage that he can't even remember doing.
  • It's All My Fault: Allen felt extremely guilty for Mana's mental state. When Mana tried to shield Cosimov from Allen's rage, as more violence would only lead to tragedy, Allen lost his mind as his paternal figure was trying to shield one of the people who was violently abusing him. This resulted in Mana having his memory and sanity shattered, as Allen couldn't control himself and stop hitting him. Out of guilt, he accepts the name "Allen", when the now insane Mana cofused him with his dog.
  • It's Personal: He seems to have this feeling toward The Earl who tricked him into turning Mana into an Akuma, and he attacks the Earl in rage when he sees him again. He may also have feeling toward Apocryphos to a lesser extent, whom he attacks him in rage when he sees that Apocryphos shot Cross -complete with a disbelieving "You killed my master?!"
  • Jerkass Realization: In his first mission with Lenalee, he vents his rage on her when failing to save an Akuma. Upon realizing his actions, Allen apologizes to her.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Nea implies that something like this has been done to him back when he was a young adult, probably not long after becoming his friend's host. He doesn't understand why Allen doesn't remember him or anything before being brought back as a child. Nea later reveals to Allen that he believes Apocryphos remade Allen, turning him into the young circus hand known as "Red".
  • Leave Me Alone!: His reaction to having the Order chase him in "Goodbye to A.W.". Even eventually gives up with the Tyki himself being surprised by the change
  • Light Is Good: Allen has white hair, at first wears a white jacket, gets compared to a white demon instead of a clown by Tykki, and has been described as being "angelic". He's a kind, self-sacrificing exorcist who fights to save the souls of akuma and mankind, with his Innocence manifesting as a sword that literally destroys evil.
  • Living Weapon: He's a living anti-Akuma weapon, even stating to Bak that he s no longer human anymore.
  • Locked into Strangeness: As a child, Allen's hair was a more reddish-brown color. His hair turned white when his adopted father cursed him.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Following his leaving the Black Order, Allen has let his hair grow out to shoulder length, requiring he keep it in a short ponytail. Combined with his already bishounen looks, it makes him look more effeminate.
  • Loss of Identity: Allen's sense of self is an important aspect of his character, largely due to being unaware who the real "Allen" even is or ever was. He was under the belief that, as a child, he was the circus hand "Red", who went on to be adopted by Mana Walker before Mana became mentally ill, mistook Red for his deceased dog "Allen" prompting Red to take the name "Allen" for himself, kept it after Mana died, and then adopted many of Mana's own traits as his own. As the series progresses though, it's made clear that not only was that identity a lie created to repress a lot of trauma, but that he's had several identities that he can't remember, all of whom make it hard for him to grasp just who he really is. Whether he is "Allen Walker", the young man who acts like Mana to preserve his memory; "Red", the indentured servant who blamed himself for Mana's mind being broken; or "Allen", the Willing Channeler of the 14th before he was discovered by Apocryphos and remade into Red.
  • Love Martyr: A none romantic example. Ever since learning of the 14th, Allen swears that his love for his guardian was part of him, not the Noah's.
  • Magical Eye: His left eye lets him see the souls of Akuma.
  • Magic Music: Once he touches the Noah's Ark music, his entire body starts moving on its own to restore the entire ark by playing the piano. Later it is revealed the 14th Noah was controlling Allen's body.
  • Magic Pants: It doesn't matter if he turns his arm into a massive claw, a cannon, or a BFS; his sleeve is always intact. Lampshaded in a Fourth-Wall Mail Slot interview; when someone asked what happened to it, he replied:
"I have no idea. I'm just glad it doesn't rip."
  • Meaningful Name: Walker were Mana's repeated words about always moving forward before his death.
  • The Mirror Shows Your True Self: Not really straight example, because there's nothing weird with Allen's own appearance whenever he looks in the mirror. However, after Ark arc there's odd form looming behind him, grinning creepily, whom only he can see. It's eventually revealed that it's actually form of the 14th Noah who is eventually going to take over his body.
  • Monster Clown: Interestingly played with. He's more of a badass hero clown, and a monster to his enemies. All in all, you'd be hard-pressed to find another protagonist with that description.
  • Mystical White Hair: His white hair is noted as quite unusual. This is a hint that he's a cursed Exorcist and the 14th Noah.

  • Naïve Newcomer: He's the naive rookie to the Black Order and after he joins, Allen slowly discovers the downsides of being an Exorcist and the lengths the Order is willing to go to win the war against the Akuma.
  • New House, New Problems: He considers the Order Headquarters his new home but often has to deal with the mess Komui and rest of the members make.
  • Nice Guy: Allen portrays himself as a kind, generous, and very polite young man. He tends to be very self-sacrificing, often willing to let his body and emotions take devastating blows for the sake of others; this trait is something that has angered several of his comrades and friends, most noticeably Yu and Lenalee.
  • Not What I Signed on For: He only joined the Order to exorcise Akuma. When learning from Lavi that they also have to fight the Noah, he becomes angry because he considers them humans.
  • No Sense of Direction: Allen has been described as a "master of getting lost."
  • Older Than He Looks: It's implied that Allen is a lot older than 35. In fact, Nea even observes that Allen has grown younger from when he first knew him.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Technically speaking. Allen doesn't actually have a birth name, being an orphan who worked for the circus. The people at the circus initially called him "Red Arm", or "Red" for short, after his red left arm. After meeting Mana and Mana's dog "Allen" died, Mana mistook Red for Allen, and since Mana had become a father to Red, Red took on the name "Allen Walker". The "Red and Mana" mini-arc even casts doubt on that though, as Mana never actually mistook Red for Allen like Allen thought, and his last name wasn't "Walker", but "Campbell". Overall though, Allen doesn't actually have a real name.
  • Parental Abandonment: When Allen was a small child his parents sold him to the circus. He has no memory of them.
  • Personality Powers: His Innocence, the Crown Clown, is a blade that spares its victim's humanity despite destroying the evil within them, and is explicitly stated to be a reflection of Allen's own heart — a ridiculous clown, kind and well-meaning even in battle.
  • The Pollyanna: Seriously, this kid has been through a lot of crap and yet, he still doesn't let it get him down.
  • Prematurely Grey-Haired: His reddish-brown hair turned white when his adopted father cursed him.
  • Professional Gambler: He's a master at cheating at poker. He says that he had to polish his skills so he could pay off General Cross' debts and make a living for himself... And he is disturbingly proud about this.
Allen: I never lose at cards... [laughs maniacally as he strips three other cheaters of their clothes]
  • Rage Againstthe Mentor: After being so traumatized by Cross Marian's treatment, Allen hits his master in the first episode of Hallow enraged. Word of God comically referred to this as "Dark Allen" in the Charagray guidebook.
  • Putting the Band Back Together: Upon telling Kanda his past, Allen accepts the help and reunites with some of his friends to fight together rather than remain alone as originally planned.
  • Scars Are Forever: He has a scar through his left eye, which is part of the curse that allows him to see Akuma. He later receives a bunch of huge, deep scars across his entire chest from impaling himself with his own Akuma-purifying sword, which he thought shouldn't hurt him... except for the unfortunate fact that he's actually a Noah.
  • Rebellious Spirit: In contrast to his early gentleman persona, Allen develops a more informal side after obtaining Crown Clown to the point the author herself says in volume 9 that he became "Dark Allen". It actually becomes a crucial point in his characterization when Cross Marian noted Allen was always rebellious until Mana's apparent death and that he was acting all along like Mana.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After the Alma Karma arc Allen leaves the Order but in a nice way, telling Lenalee he willl always love them
  • Seen It All: After seeing so many Akumas, Noah and supernatural beings even the 14th is shocked that he is not surprised by the fact the two can talk in the mirror.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: He says this quietly with Lenalee in the anime's first half despite the huge amount of Ship Tease he later has.
  • The Soulsaver: He wishes to save all the souls of the dead trapped inside the Akuma.
  • Spiky Hair: Only when activating Crown Clown. It is comparabale to Cloud Strife (sword included) though the author compares it to Super Saiyans.
  • Stepford Smiler: Some interpretations of his character. Allen tends to smile and throw out optimistic and enthusiastic support at the drop of a hat when around his friends, but whenever he's alone he tends to be either beating himself up, wallowing in some deserved self-pity, or worrying about his entire freaking existence.
  • Stock Shōnen Hero: He isn't an Idiot Hero, but otherwise Allen fits the trope to a tee. He's a cheerful, kind-hearted and compassionate young man with a strong sense of justice. He loves and wishes to save everyone — humans and Akuma alike. Nothing you do will make him give up or keep him down for long. He also is quite the Big Eater.
  • Team Mom: Provides emotional comfort to everybody in the Ark to the point he smiles when Lenalee punches him for being too nice.
  • Tears of Blood: Allen reacts very badly with seeing Akuma destroyed with anything other than innocence. Since he sees the souls in agony, yet there's nothing he can do to save them.
  • Take a Third Option: Upon learning the true nature of the Third Exorcist and their relationships with Link, Allen questions his present problems in life and wonders if he could stop Nea and the Millennium Earl by taking a third option that does not involve violence.
  • Technical Pacifist: Allen's goal is to purify akuma, not kill them entirely.
  • Tender Tears: Allen's failure to save Suman hits him but upon being comforted by Lenalee, he cries happily
  • Terrible Artist: He sucks at drawing.
  • This Is Unforgivable!!: Incredibly weird for him but he loses it when hearing the news relating the Cardinal and Link.
  • Tricked into Escaping: When Apocryphos tries to kill him alongside Nea, Allen finds himself force to escape from the Order. It is eventually revealed from Levellier that this was staged as Cross and him wanted to aid Nea though the entire nature of this was not elaborated that much.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: While he agrees about exorcising Akumas, Noah clan members is different. This eventually leads to the creation of the Sword of the Innocence which Allen purposely created in order to destroy the Dark Matter from the Noah rather than kill them.
  • Through His Stomach:
    • The way to Allen's heart. In one instance, Miranda is unable to think of any way to cheer him up, only to offer him candy. He right away becomes ridiculously happy. Rohfa evidently caught on to this, as she apparently is trying to court him by bribing him with huge boxes of Mitarashi Dango. It does make him very happy, but apparently he's ignoring all the romantic implications suggested.
    • In a little "interview" with Allen in an omake, he pretty much directly lampshades this, pondering that perhaps the only way that he would fall for a girl is if she cooked yummy food for him every day. Of course, he said it jokingly, and right afterwards, he claims he's a Celibate Hero who doesn't have time for romance.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: He's the host for the Fourteenth Noah.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Allen's favorite food is mitarashi dango.

    U — Z
  • Undying Loyalty: It seems like his past self shared this trope with Nea, to the point of lending his body to him and accepting the fact that he would eventually disappear in order for Nea to be fully revived.
  • Unreliable Narrator: While we already know his backstory, it turns out that most of it is not true as Allen starts to remember his past when he and Kanda end up in London, during the “Saying Goodbye To A.W.” Arc. Then again, no one would dare to blame him for repressing or modifying his own memories as a coping mechanism to protect his own mind from his crappy childhood experiences.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Let's just say Allen is NOT happy to see Lala and Guzol get stabbed to death by a level 2 akuma. Allen is so mad that it causes his anti-akuma weapon to upgrade, which he uses (along with some help from Kanda) to turn said akuma to dust.
  • We Named the Monkey "Jack":
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Kanda. The 'buds' part is still debatable, though.
  • Wake Up Fighting: First with Lavi in the Noah Ark story arc.
    • During the Alma Karma arc, Allen wakes up Kanda from Wisely's coma force by punching him directly in the head. Even Road finds it cruel to which Allen answers that it's basically their relationship.
    • When Kanda and Alma start killing each other, Allen realizes the former is still avoiding to face reality with his rage, resulting in Allen fighting Kanda for their first time ever.
  • When She Smiles: Allen's smiles are sometimes hiding his sad persona as noted by none other than Word of God. Lenalee might be the only character in the series who actually realizes the hidden sadness. When Allen meets his caretaker again after escaping from the Order the elder Mother notices he has grown into a fine man as suggested by his smile.
  • What Is This Feeling??: During his days in the circus, the kid lived a stressed life until he met Mana's dog who used to warm him with its hair. The child was so atonished by this that he started wondering if there was a time where a person loved him and warmed him with a hug too.
  • White Gloves: With hand like Allen's, it's no wonder he wears them.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: A Inversion; white-haired pretty boy he may be, but he's an All-Loving Hero. The 14th is the true example.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Allen has unassuming and borderline naive traits, despite the troubling life his master and General, Cross Marian, forced him to live. Because of his cursed Pentacle Eye, which allows him to see the human souls bound to Akuma, Allen considers Akuma to be just as important to him as humans, swearing his left arm to saving Akuma and his right to saving humans in his attempt to be, as he once put it, "a destroyer who can save".
  • Willing Channeler: If Nea is to be believed, the man Allen was before Apocryphos "remade" him had come to Nea offering to host his memory, becoming a willing host of the 14th Noah.
  • You Are Not Alone: In the "Farewell to A.W.", Allen realizes he has always been supported by the Black Order despite the issues he has with Nea.
  • You Can Barely Stand: He's been known to fight even when he can't stand, using his Innocence to force his unconscious body to move.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Although Allen is against this, ever since Hallow, Allen has been confronting his fate involving when will the 14th delete him and the "Farewell to A.W." arc only made it worse by having him fate preterdermined by the past Allen years ago
