Exorcist Generals

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/generals_hallow.png

Exorcists who have reached the Critical Point (exceeding the one hundred percent synchronization limit). They are the strongest Exorcist and have other duties apart of collecting pieces of Innocence and slay Akumas, ranging from finding compatible users for the shards of Innocence they retrieve to being sent on secret missions by the Great Generals. Generals are expected to have a group of Exorcists under their command, and are generally tasked to train them too.

  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: As the strongest among their fellow Exorcists (due having surpassing the normal synchronization rate), they are given the rank of General.
  • Dwindling Party: Zigzagged. There were only five of them at the beginning of the series, then Yeegar was unceremoniously killed off-screen (though the anime showed his demise). Allen later reached the Critical Point in the Noah's Ark during his fight with Tyki, but he was accused of heresy (due being the host of the 14th Noah) afterwards, and was eventually forced to flee from the Order after a series of events, so he was never proposed as a a candidate to General. Previous to that, Cross was attacked and seemingly killed by an unknown assailant (later revealed to be Apocryphos) and had his Innocence desynchronized with him, losing the requirements to be an Exorcist. Most recently, Tiedoll mentioned that Kanda always had potential to reach the Critical Point even before his Mugen evolved to Crystal Type, and was proposed by his master to become a General (an offer that he accepted). That way, in the current arc, we have three active Generals and one possible candidate.
  • Empathic Weapon: Being Exorcists, they use Innocence as their main weapon against both Akumas and the Noah (though Cross also knows magic). Theirs, however, have surpassed the one hundred percent of synchronization, and, as a result, are far stronger than any other Exorcist. General Klaud takes this one step further by having a parasitic Innocence under the shape of a little monkey.
  • Four-Star Badass: They obtained the rank of General after surpassing the synchronization rate with their Innocence, and every one of them is a certified badass.
  • One-Man Army: Every one of them (except for Yeegar, whose powers were never revealed) is shown to be able to destroy dozens of Level 3s and Giant Akumas with astonishing ease. Mind you that at the point where they did that, even Allen (who had surpassed the Critical Point and destroyed a Level 3 when he unleashed the true powers of his Crown Clown) was having troubles trying to fight them all.
    • Yeegar in the anime was also shown to be proficent enough to destroy a bunch of Level 1s and Level 2s without breaking a sweat. It wasn't until the two Noahs who sent the Akumas decided to fight him directly that he was defeated.
  • Posthumous Character: In the Talk Corner of volume 25, it’s revealed that Lenalee was trained by a sixth General different from the five active at the beginning of the story. The mysterious General however died back when Lenalee was young, and she doesn’t have many memories of her General either, so there’s not much information about them.
  • Powers Do the Fighting: Except for Socalo and Yeegar, who fight directly with their weapons, the rest of the Generals have Innocence that do all the heavy work for them and allow them to not get directly involved in a fight:
    • Apart from his Judgment, that shoots powerful holy bullets that always hit the target, Cross can also control with sorcery the corpse of an Exorcist named Maria, who has an Innocence in her vocal cords that allow her to sing melodies that either control the enemy or hide the presence of the user or anyone he wishes to. With this, Cross's involvement in the fight is merely pulling the trigger and manipulate Maria with magic while he remains in the same spot.
    • Tiedoll's Maker of Eden gives him the power to bring his art to life, which often translates into creating several creatures that fight his enemies for him, while he remains in the same place creating more art constructions to support the others.
    • Klaud has a living Innocence in the shape of a small white monkey, which can turn into a bigger, stronger version with the ability to imbue energy into its fists and possessing great physical strength, agility and speed. She only has to order her monkey around, as the simian is the one who does all the fighting.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: The Exorcists with the higher rank, who also happen to be the most powerful ones.

    Cross Marian

Cross Marian

Voiced by: Hiroki Tochi (JP, 2006 anime), Tsuguo Mogami (JP, Hallow), Christopher Sabat (EN), Jesús Maniega (SP)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cross_marian_hallow.png
Appearance at the beginning of the series

Allen's Trickster Mentor, one of the five Generals, and an incredible badass. He has a rather sociopathic habit of racking up enormous amounts of debt and weaseling out of paying it, usually by foisting it off on Allen instead. He also doesn't especially like the rules the rest of the Order wants him to follow, and stays far away from headquarters as much as possible just because he's contrary. However, he's not a complete Jerkass; he does care for Allen, and has made himself an incredible pain to the Earl in the course of Walking the Earth, such that the Earl had Jasdevi sent after him. Cross left them a $10,000 debt to pay.

His Innocence is a gun called Judgment, and he kicks ridiculous amounts of ass with it. He also controls an undead woman with parasite-type Innocence called Grave of Maria, and has a so-far-unexplained ability to turn Akuma good.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: As a result from his personality and feelings for Allen not being fleshed out until way later in the manga, the anime has the tendency to overplay his nastier side and make him more of a callous jerk than what he truly is in canon. Episode 27 in particular depicts him as very harsh and careless towards Allen, while he's in truth more of a Jerk with a Heart of Gold with him.
  • The Alcoholic: All but outright stated he's drowning his sorrows, given the amount of alcohol in his old room, and his character quote in the official fanbook.
    "Sake is the best medicine."
  • Badass Bookworm: He was a scientist before joining the order and had in-depth knowledge behind the Noah and the 14th. Innocence sometimes match up with the wielder. Klaud was a beast master in a circus, so her innocence is a monkey, whom she uses a whip for. So, it's possible Cross had experience with guns before becoming an Exorcist. He also has a few casual physical strength feats. He's able to easily lift Allen, who weighs 121 pounds at the least, and toss him a good distance with only one hand. And in chapter 206, he's shown kicking a table in half in one go. Then later, while doing laundry, cracking a wooden washtub with his bare feet.
  • Badass Longcoat: And he really likes it. When a level 4 Akuma pretty much destroys the HQ and kills lots of people, he attacks and, with the help of Allen and Lenalee, kills it. He says he didn't care about all the dead people; but it messed up his clothes. He then gets another long coat later.
  • Barbarian Longhair: Boy is it ever. And in an omake scan at the end of one of the volumes, shows Cross naked—no genitals shown, and his legs are hairy as well.
  • Casual Kink: In the anime, Cross makes a comment, showing he's ok with it. When HQ is attacked, Klaud, a fellow general, tells him to do some work. Cross scoffs at this, stating he hates work. Klaud asks him if she's going to have to whip him, to which he responds that it wouldn't be a bad idea, and that he'd rather be spending time with a good woman than fighting. Unfortunately, no word on it being actually canon since it's only mentioned in the anime.
  • Chivalrous Pervert:
    • He flirts with lots of girls, but does care for those he scores with. He was very unhappy to learn what happened to Anita, to start. Allen says he lives off lovers in different places. He also has keepsakes from some of his lovers under his bed at mother's house, as stated in Jump SQ. So, if they allow him to stick around a bit, and give him things which he hangs on to-and puts away, then it seems to show he does form bonds with his lovers, and is capable. Word of God states one of his likes is "good women." If he dehumanized, and used women in general, a good one from a bad one probably wouldn't matter. Nothing seems to hint that he mistreats women in any way, contrary to The Casanova.
    • Klaud is shown as kind and compassionate, but she's not very friendly with Cross, probably due to his flirting and teasing. Regardless, Cross states she's always a nice woman, even if she's not nice to him.
  • Convenient Coma: This appears to be his fate at the moment. Chapter 222, Road has witnessed his conversation with Allen, in Neah's sub-conscious. She seems happy that Allen will go to the mansion Cross pointed him to, then goes on to say she wants Cross to sleep until then.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Red hair and eyes.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Lenalee invokes this in him.
    "She's too cute, I can't refuse"
  • Ethical Slut: Sleeps around, but is still a gentleman. Anita, one of his lovers seemed to love him. She also tells us her mother loved him. Cross also believes Anita to be a good woman, regardless of her status as a prostitute. His character profile states he likes "good" women, which he said Anita is. So, he's, apparently, not a someone who dehumanize prostitutes, and just likes a nice woman in general.
  • Fatal Flaw: Cute things apparently. He was going to run off again after being back at The Order, following four years of absence. What kept him there was Lenalee hugging him and asking that he not leave again. While there, he got into quite a bit of trouble. He was interrogated, investigated, and kept under surveillance. A major problem being that it was easy for Appocryphos to find, and attempt to assassinate him, while he's stuck at The Order. All this trouble because Lenalee asked him to stay, whom he says was too cute to refuse. Allen theorizes the entire reason Lenalee was put on Cross' team was for that reason.
  • The Gunslinger: He uses a ridiculously powerful revolver by the name of Judgment. However, either Apocryphos made it reject him, he is truly dead or there's other ways innocence can reject their wielder we aren't aware of yet.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: It seems he can be very cool and composed if need be. But there are times when he's prone to showing a bit of a violent temper. Such as him having to nurse Allen back to health. Allen is unresponsive, thus Cross has to cook for him, feed him, and do his laundry. Cross' response to Allen not eating is kicking in a table and screaming. He washes the laundry with his feet, and stomps hard enough to crack the wash tub. Ba Ba tries to warn him, but Cross ignores him and continues stomping until it breaks. He has an important meeting with Allen, and drops some very distressing news on him. Allen is frozen in shock for a minute, and Cross, frustrated at Allen's unresponsiveness, responds by slapping him hard enough to knock him to the floor. Later in the meeting, Allen becomes angered by Cross' parting words. He tries to get Cross to wait, then resorts to throwing Tim and hitting him. Cross seethes in anger, then starts yelling at Allen, with a Crow guard holding him back.
  • The Hedonist: His methods of blowing off steam, or dealing with troubles seems to be smoking, drinking, and women.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: He seems to want to protect humanity, and General Yeager praises his will to destroy Akuma in the anime. However, he has made some sacrifices in the journey. Later in the manga, it's shown he apparently regards it as Dirty Business During events of chapter 167, when facing up to Allen's fate, he outright asks himself "Do you always have to sacrifice something to protect something else?" Seems to show Cross has done that alot, and he does not find any enjoyment in it. It's just that the sacrifices he makes are for a greater purpose. And if the scene in Neah's sub-conscious mentioned above is to be trusted there seems to be a certain amount of conflict within him about choosing what he has to do to protect humanity and how he wants Allen to live his own life as himsel.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He has shown he has his Jerkass moments. But, he's not a complete jerkass. The manga has shown many hints and instances to illustrate that Cross isn't heartless, and while many people aren't fond of him, there's many people who apparently think very highly of him. Allen says he lives off lovers and acquaintances. So he's apparently someone you could be fond of, and even want to help, should he care to show his kinder side. He's shown protectiveness, empathy, sadness, concern, and hesitation to fire against an enemy, at expense of a fellow Exorcist. Although, all of these are shown when it comes to Allen and women. He could very well be just pretending to be a jerk. Maybe due to the implied sacrifices he has had to make and the people he has lost.
  • Large and in Charge: At 6'4, Cross is one of the tallest protagonists in the series and one of the most powerful.
  • Mask of Power: His opera mask can transform his face and voice into a skull, at the least. He can confuse them with it, despite Skulls having a hive mind-esque connection to each other.
  • Meaningful Name: His name seems to be a reference to The Marian Cross Also, he seems to be most affiliated with crosses than any other character. His name. He created Tim, who has a cross on him. He wears a cross necklace, and his mask has a cross on it.
  • Mooching Master: His 15-year old apprentice pays his debts, and made money for both of them when they lived together.
  • Necromancer: He has two Innocence, a gun and the Grave of Maria, which is actually a Parasitic type Innocence attached to some woman's dead body, which Cross controls with magic. Some fans theorize Maria was a lover of Cross' when she was alive but Hoshino hasn't revealed the history behind her as of yet.
  • Never Found the Body: Which leads to speculations that He's Just Hiding.
    • Recent chapter 222 finally confirms that he is alive, fifty-four chapters after his disappearance. It's hinted that he may be comatose however. But the trope still applies. We know he's alive and sleeping, stated by Road. But where his body is has not been revealed
  • Older Than He Looks: He's been allied with Neah for over 35 years, Tiedoll, Winters and Klaud are forty-one, forty and thirty-five respectively, so Cross has been in the war since they were children. In an extra, Komui's Talk Corner #3, the characters debate Cross' age. Johnny says he looks to be in his late twenties, but that he has to be at least forty. Tyki says he's making himself look scarily young. Wisely then asks Allen-who says his master hasn't aged a year since he met him. He then says it's scary, after calling Cross a monster. Hoshino herself, keeps his age hidden in the character info, however she did say he has a shared background with the Campbell twins he's probably over 50.
  • Parental Substitute: When Cross found Allen, he spent quite a lot of time with Mother to raise Allen himself when he says he doesn't know how to care for a child, which leads him into learning how to cook and do laundry.
  • Pet the Dog: Some moments with Allen, and comments made by him. Also, Anita's praise, and attitude toward him, and telling us that her mother felt the same. His protecting Lenalee on the ark, then agreeing to stay at HQ because she wanted him to. For now, Allen and girls seem to show Cross' softer side.
    • A big one in recent chapter 222, Cross speaks with Allen in Nea's dream world/memories. He tells Allen that he never wished for him to die. He wants Allen to accept his fate of disappearing because if he resists, he will suffer more. He then tells Allen that if he's scared, he'll stay with him because he is still his master, and that he's cleaned Allen soiled sheets once before.
  • Religious Bruiser: He seems to fit here. He's known for being a badass character. Formerly an Exorcist General of The Black Order, and Scientist. His Innocence (weapon) was a powerful revolver named Judgement, which had homing bullets that never missed their target. Known to be a very gruff character -Allen being slightly afraid of him when he first laid eyes on him. He's strong enough to survive being shot in the head by his own innocence -only being comatose as a result. He likes to smoke, and drink, while also having fondness for women, along with interest in visiting the red-light districts. But he's a man of the cloth nonetheless. He is referred to as a priest by villagers who have met him. Allen mentions him being very threatening despite his priest attire after meeting him in Reverse. Hoshino also drew him in priest robes on the cover of the Reverse Novel. The church that he took Allen to, after picking him up, apparently belongs to him. It's revealed in Reverse Chapter one, of the first novel, by Mother, that she just watches over the church when Cross is away.
  • Sleep Cute: Pulls one off in chapter 206.
  • Sleeps in the Nude: According to Word of God, he does this so he can tan and smoke in the morning before getting dressed. Sadly, this is currently an Informed Attribute.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Boy, is it ever
  • Story-Breaker Power: He hands Tyki his ass - even after mutating and kicking the ass of everyone else around - so hard that the Earl has to pull a Villainous Rescue to bail him out, is one of the only two people (the other being the Earl) who can use Magic, and to devastating effect, has a gun with unlimited ammo and no need to reload with homing bullets that never stop until they hit their target AND that gun has a Super Mode that increases it firepower by 300%. There is a reason even the Earl is reluctant to have a fight with this guy.
  • Too Many Belts: Have you looked at his pants?
  • Trickster Mentor: He really does love Allen. Word of God says Cross cares for him like his own child. But, Cross roughs him up alot, because he likes Allen's dark side, as Hoshino stated, which is closer to real Allen, as opposed to the repressed boy be became after Mana's death.

A middle-aged exorcist general who cares deeply for his disciples. He is an artist and has the anti-akuma weapon Maker of Heaven (or, depending on the translation, Maker of Eden).

  • A Father to His Men: He starts crying when his students in the Ark are presumed dead and calls them his sons.
  • Art Attacker: His "Maker of Eden" is a giant chisel that he can use to create objects like giant dolls or forests to protect his allies.
  • Barrier Warrior: He is stated to have the greatest defensive ability the exorcists have and his creations are apparently able to withstand attacks from even Kanda and Allen. He does have a few offensive abilities as well, but during the attack on the Black Order HQ he spent most of the fight protecting the others while his fellow exorcists dealt with the Level 4 Akuma.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: A very sweet man. But nothing to be played with.
  • Cultured Badass: He loves art, and is often seen painting or drawing.
  • Gaia's Vengeance: His power in a nutshell.
  • Manly Facial Hair: He has a short but thick mustache and is one of the most powerful exorcists alive.
  • Photographic Memory: He sketches an entire detailed city completely from memory when he first reunites with his disciples.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: After Lenalee and Marie helped Kanda sneak off and he proceed to free and escape with Johnny, Tiedoll was sent to apprehend the two of them. Instead, he tells Kanda he has the General's full support if Kanda agrees to become a General himself, and assists him in locating Allen and Johnny. He later tells Johnny that while he originally intended on capturing Allen as ordered, he changed his mind after seeing how devoted Kanda, Lenalee, and Marie were to helping him, and figured he already owed Allen for helping out with Alma Karma. As such, he hears Allen out and becomes a staunch supporter of him, promising to help uncover the "truth" behind the war they're all trapped in.
  • When Trees Attack: He basically turns his Innocence into a wooden Humongous Mecha at one point.
  • The Voiceless: As a result from having most of his screentime removed (he only appears in a single scene), he gets no lines in Hallow, unlike Cross, Socalo and Nine.

    Klaud Nine

The only female exorcist general. She was formerly an animal trainer before becoming an exorcist. Her anti-akuma weapon is that cute little monkey that rides around on her shoulder that turns into a 10 foot tall giant lightning throwing monkey.

  • Action Girl: Klaud's the sole female general, making her the most powerful non-Noah woman in the series.
  • Beast of Battle: Her little shoulder monkey transforms and fights by her side in combat.
  • The Beastmaster: She used to be an animal trainer before becoming an exorcist. Even her innocence takes on the form of a deadly monkey creature that she commands in battle.
  • Berserk Button: The reason she comes off as she does in her introductionary arc is because she 'really doesn't like Cross, who keeps flirting with her.
  • Friend to All Children: She's taken up teaching Timothy after he joins the Order, and is shown to be much nicer than previously portrayed.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Her hair covers the scarred side of her face.
  • Killer Rabbit: That little monkey riding on her shoulder can transform into an anti-akuma weapon, specifically, a huge, Badass looking monster that fire energy blasts from its hands.
  • Lady of War: She has a gentle and cool demeanor, and can use her whip to wreak destruction with her monkey.
  • The Smurfette Principle: As the only female general.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She's cool, calm and can be quite the Deadpan Snarker at times, but cares deeply about others, and is seen crying when the exorcists on her team are killed.
  • Whip of Dominance: She's a The Beastmaster who carries a whip into battle with her and she uses it to give commands to Lau Shimin, her monkey partner. The anime adds a conversation where she threatens to use her whip on Cross Marian when he's being a slouch, and he jokes that he wouldn't mind it.
Cloud Nine: Maybe I should whip you].
Cross Marian: Doesn't sound too bad.

    Winters Socalo

Winters Socalo

Voiced by: Norio Wakamoto (JP, 2006 anime), Tetsu Inada (JP, Hallow), Jarrod Greene (ENG)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/socalo_hallow.png

A former death-row inmate who is now an exorcist general. His anti-akuma weapon is called Madness.

  • Ambiguously Human: With his unnatural gray skin, sharp teeth, pupil-less eyes and pointy ears, he looks more like a discount Noah on the likes of Skinn Bolic than to any of the Exorcists, who all look like regular humans except for some details. Despite that no one ever comments on his creepy appearance and he’s treated like any normal person.
  • Ax-Crazy: He lives to inflict carnage on others and becomes unhinged in battle. Even his Innocence weapon is called Madness, which should tell you something.
  • Blood Knight: Really happy when fighting Akuma, unlike most exorcists.
  • BFS: His Innocence manifests in the shape of a double edged huge jagged blade.
  • Cool Mask: At until he removed it and hasn't worn it since. And it was a creepy one too.
  • Fangs Are Evil: Downplayed as he isn't really evil, but he has shark-like teeth and he's the most sociopathic and uncaring of the Exorcists.
  • Improbable Weapon User: A huge-ass double-bladed saw. Of Doom.
  • Jerkass: "Bunch of losers. I have nothing to say to them." He's talking about his team. They were all killed by Tyki.
  • Large Ham: He tends to behave like a total maniac while fighting. Accentuated in the anime, considering his voice actor.
  • Pet the Dog: While not expanded on much, the character book notes he likes animals. A small showing occurs when the Generals discuss Lenalee's Innocence change. He's sitting beside Klaud on the couch & letting Lou Shimi swing on his arm.
  • Scary Teeth: His mouth is full of sharp fangs who showcase his brutal, animalistic personality.
  • Token Evil Teammate: He’s this among the Exorcists. While many of them fight to either save the world/their loved ones, revenge against the Earl, or were forced to become one, Socalo only cares about the carnage he can inflict on the Noah and their subordinates, and even was a former death-row inmate prior to his recruitment by the Order. He considered his deceased disciples trash and doesn’t thinks twice on killing a subordinate if they become a hindrance to him (as he was willing to kill Miranda in order to defeat Lulu Bell after she was taken hostage by the Noah and murdered Kiredori the second the Alma Cells inside him awakened and made him go berserk). The only reason why he can be considered a good guy is because he’s more interested in cutting Akuma (rather than humans) to pieces.

    Kevin Yeegar

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yeegar.png

One of the generals who was killed by Noah in their search of Heart. He was a school teacher before he became a general.

  • Adaptational Badass: His abilities are only briefly chalked up in the manga when Komui discusses his death with Allen, Lenalee and the Bookmen, but the anime gets to show the General fighting in all his glory, showing him to be a tough and skilled warrior.
  • Adaptation Expansion: His role in the manga is mostly as a plot device. Most of his characterization comes from filler in the anime.
  • Badass Teacher: Before he was an Exorcist, Yeegar was a school teacher very attached to his students. Even as an old man he's still very protective of the Finders under his charge and is willing to risk his life for them.
  • Character Death: He's killed by the Noah.
  • Cool Old Guy: He's the oldest general yet is still able to perform his duties as an exorcist. It took Road and Tyki double teaming and mind raping him to defeat him in the anime.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: In his youth he was a teacher with a deep bond with his students. One day, however, his entire class was killed by an Akuma created by a classmate who made a deal with the Earl to bring back her deceased friend, a tragedy that still haunts him today. Unfortunately, Road uses that very tragedy to break his spirit and destroy his heart in their fight.
  • Go On Without Me: He holds back 2 of the Noah while his team escapes. This sadly ends in his capture and eventual death.
  • Make an Example of Them: The Earl sends him back broken, insane and near death, singing the Earl's twisted lullaby.
  • Mind Rape: Thanks Road, for making him see how he failed to protect his students, which in part is what made him so easy to defeat.
  • My Greatest Failure: When he was a young teacher, one of her students became an Akuma reviving her best friend with a deal with the Earl, massacring her entire class before an Exorcist of the Order put an end to her life. This tragedy struck Yeegar so much that he vowed to dedicate his life to avoid similar events from happening, eventually becoming one of the strongest Exorcists.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: His defeat and death at the hands of the forces of the Earl early in the story starts the search for the Generals that leads to the beginning of the first big saga of the series.
  • Sacrificial Lion: While in the manga he's little more than a way to force Allen and his friends to search for General Cross, in the anime he's very much this. He's introduced as a likeable, wise and strong character with a tragic backstory who's really kind to Allen and manages to create a very positive impression on the boy. An episode later, he's mercilessly defeated and driven mad to show how dangerous the Earl is when he's not playing around, with Yeegar dying due to his wounds soon after.
  • The Worf Effect: He is easily defeated by Tyki and Road after being established as a strong combatant defeating all of their Akuma (including the Level Two Knight Akuma they brought with them), showing himself to be by far the weakest General (as all of the other Generals can at least give a Noah a good fight) and hyping the abilities of a serious Road and Tyki for the future.
