Masters of Fate/Prototype

    Ayaka Sajyou
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fpam1_8012.jpg
Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa

The Master of Saber whose Master Rank is "7th Rank - Princes". The heir to the Sajyou household, her father Hiroki and older sister Manaka died in the previous Holy Grail War and she now lives by herself. She suffers from low self-esteem and low talent in her family's magic. Though initially against joining the Holy Grail War, an attack by Lancer and her subsequent summoning of Saber forces Ayaka to take part.

  • Animal Motifs: Crows as befitting her image as a witch. She's described as being close with them and even uses black feathers as a method of attack.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Her eyes were originally black in her original design by Takeuchi, but were eventually changed to blue come Fate/Prototype proper.
  • Beautiful All Along: Though normally considered plain looking which is compounded by her meek behavior outside her home, Ayaka without her glasses is described as being more beautiful than all of Uruk's women combined by Archer and even catches Saber's attention too. She's also somewhat curvy for her age which becomes apparent when she wears her Rat Witch attire or has a towel on while bathing in a hot spring.
  • Big Little Sister: Averted in the past where Manaka was reasonably taller than Ayaka when the latter was still a child, but played straight in the present due to Manaka retaining her youthful appearance as a 12-year-old from Fragments after her mysterious revival in the main Prototype storyline eight years later.
  • Big Sister Worship: She admired her sister when she was a young child. Unfortunately for her, their relationship goes south when Manaka tries to kill her out of jealousy because she happened to have a talk with Saber that results in the latter abandoning his wish for the grail.
  • Blood Magic: Her family's magecraft includes sacrificing small animals like birds as part of their rituals. However, since Ayaka is unable to bring herself to do it, she instead makes due with using her own blood instead.
  • Break the Cutie: Poor little Ayaka ends up being horribly traumatized by the end of Fragments courtesy of her evil older sister's actions. What was once a bright and optimistic child ends up becoming a very pessimistic and dour young woman years after as a result.
  • But Not Too Foreign: Half-Japanese through her father, Half-British through her mother. In addition to this, the Sajyou family through her father's side is said to have foreign roots mixed into their ancestry, though which foreign ethnicity they're descended from isn't specified.
  • Cain and Abel: The Abel to Manaka's Cain.
  • The Call Knows Where You Live: Despite her staunch refusal to participate in the Holy Grail War, Ayaka is still inevitably forced to be part of it when Misaya has Lancer attack her at her home, causing Ayaka to accidentally summon Saber just before she's nearly killed.
  • The Cameo: First appeared in a material book known as "Character Material", and also made an appearance in a Yonkoma Spin-Off called Fate/school life
  • Cowardly Lion: Despite seeing herself as weak, she's actually surprisingly strong-willed. Before she accidentally summoned Saber, she was willing to fight to defend herself from Lancer, even if it was ultimately futile.
    • In the Hanafuda scenario for Team Prototype, Ayaka admits that it's not fighting that she's afraid of, it's just going through scary experiences. The scenario shows as such, as despite the opponents she and her team go up against, Ayaka was actually fully confident in her team's ability to beat them, with only her sister Manaka making her doubt their chances. This fact actually unnerves Saber, Archer, and Lancer.
  • Cute Witch: Ayaka is a cute girl who has a classical witch vibe going for her due to her family's practices and use of magic that's considered old even among mages. She even dresses up as rat themed Witch in the 2013 Type-Moon April Fools event.
  • Decomposite Character: Not her specifically, but Ayaka's character would go on to eventually serve as the general basis for Shirou, Rin, and Sakura in Fate/stay night with many elements from her character going on to be split between all three. Her physical appearance also bears similarities to Ryougi Shiki.
  • Dude Magnet: Something Shirou and Rin would definitely inherit. She has moments with Saber, Archer, Lancer, and Rider, with Archer being the one who's most blatantly in love with her. Hilariously lampshaded by Ciel much to Satsuki's envy in Type-Moon's 2013 April Fools' event.
Ciel: You know she's got herself a harem of not one but three hot guys at her beck and call, right?
    Satsuki: SHE HAS TO DIE.
  • Feather Motif: Her crow feathers that she used for offensive spells, and that she bears a Command Seal that resembles a single feather.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: She met and even spoke with Saber during the events of Fragments but doesn't remember him in the present day.
  • Friend to All Living Things: She's friendly towards animals. She even befriends and talks to the crows she's supposed to be sacrificing every morning under her father's order, to the point that she's unwilling to kill them.
  • The Glasses Come Off: Whenever Ayaka does this, not only does her appearance change (with her hair and eyes growing brighter as if they were glowing), but her personality will also shift from being her generally weak, and very meek self, to being a more assertive, and outright aggressive person overall, a personality that's reminiscent of Rin's.
  • Green Thumb: To be expected given that she's been taking care of her mother's greenhouse since she was a kid.
  • Harmful to Minors: Being the caring older sister that she is, Manaka gives the then eight year old Ayaka the unenviable position of personally witnessing the girls Manaka compelled to sacrifice themselves to the Grail jump to their own deaths in front of her. She also helplessly watched as Manaka brutally murders their own father firsthand shortly after that, and then gets to see Saber stab Manaka bloodily in the back in rapid succession. No wonder Ayaka became such a traumatized person in the present.
  • Healing Factor: Similar to Shirou, Ayaka is implied to have one thanks to surviving a direct stab wound to the chest from Lancer and appearing seemingly fine afterwards. Fragments of Sky Silver implies that it might be Avalon, as the catalyst that Manaka used to summon Saber was an unnamed sheathenote  Furthermore, Hiroki would implant a holy relic inside of her body to protect her and this is what allows her to summon Saber again years later.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Has very low self-esteem and thinks of herself as someone plainly average, something she considers as a flaw. Manaka pointing out to her that she's just a painfully ordinary person with only enough value as an ingredient for the Beast she was about to feed her younger sister to at the end of Fragments likely helped contribute to it in the present day.
  • Hidden Buxom: As seen in Team Prototype's Hanafuda Scenario of the 2012 re-release of Fate/stay night Realta Nua, Ayaka's clothes do a good job of hiding how secretly stacked she is underneath. Her Chapter Heroine Sanctuary costume also speaks for itself as well.
  • Identical Stranger:
    • During their first encounter in Fragments of Sky Silver, Saber once mistook a young Ayaka for Vivian, better known as the Lady of the Lake from Arthurian Mythology, and it's hinted from Saber's own words that Ayaka and Vivian greatly resemble each other.
    • In the alternate timeline of Fate/strange Fake, there exists a character named Ayaka Sajyou who looks identical to Proto-Ayaka in all aspects except for her hair color which is blonde. Though initially assumed to be her counterpart in another timeline, it's later revealed that there exists another Ayaka Sajyou who is currently in Romania and also a student of Waver's as well.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: She thinks that being average is a flaw. Considering her older sister was an extremely talented magus at a young age, it's not hard to see where she's coming from.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Best shown when she was a child during the events of Fragments.
  • Lady and Knight: The Lady to Saber's Knight. To a lesser extent, she's also this with Archer and Lancer. Their team name in the Hanafuda minigame of Realta Nua 2012 is even called "Miss Ayaka and her Three Knights".
  • Large Ham: In the Christmas Drama CD at least, as a consequence of her being the only straight woman there. It must be heard to be believed.
  • Magic Staff: After Saber is stolen from her by Sancraid Phahn, she decides to pull one out from her family's storage in her bid to rescue him and to take down Sancraid.
  • Magikarp Power: She is unskilled in her family's native magic, but on Saber's suggestion she tries Formalcraft (which she describes as "thaumaturgy for dummies"). She finds that she has a natural talent for it, though what exactly that entails is left unclear.
  • Minor Living Alone: Both her parents and older sister are dead, and since Ayaka has no stated living relatives either, she ends up living by herself in the Sajyou home after the events of the first Tokyo Grail War.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Downplayed when compared to her sister, but in the Team Prototype's Hanafuda scenario, her first guess about the strangeness of the city they were in (Fuyuki City which has a harbor) was to believe that an octopus monster might have appeared and made everyone in the city its familiar. It's at this point that Saber reveals that she has a hobby of reading "gloomy books" which Ayaka which doesn't really deny.
  • Occult Blue Eyes: Glasses-off Ayaka is said to be much more powerful and assertive than her regular glasses-on self. In fact, her eyes (along with her hair) basically glow brighter when the glasses are gone.
  • Only Sane Woman: Poor Ayaka is at her wits' end during the Christmas Drama CD. She's also this in the Hanafuda scenario for Team Prototype.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her father is dead by the hands of her sister Manaka, and her mother is mentioned in the prequel novels to have passed away sometime after giving birth to Ayaka.
  • Protectorate: To Saber. From the moment he's summoned, he declares his intention to protect Ayaka as her Servant.
  • Refusal of the Call: While she doesn't reject her Saber when she first summons him unlike her counterpart from Fate/strange Fake, she makes it clear on the get go that she does not want to participate in the Holy Grail War after what happened to her family in the last one.
  • Shared Family Quirks: As mentioned above, she and her sister both share similar tastes in finding entertainment in the morbid and strange. For Ayaka, it's merely a book reading hobby that she picked up likely because of her upbringing as a magus.
  • Shrinking Violet:
    • She is painfully shy and lacking in confidence at the start of the story, in a fashion similar to Sakura. Interestingly enough, in spite of her awkwardness, she does have friends in school, albeit not ones she could call she's truly close with just like Rin at the start of Fate/stay night.
    • In the OVA script, a conversation with Misaya reveals that this is the reason why she actually looks down on Ayaka. It doesn't matter to her if Ayaka is a weak mage, Misaya just finds it hard to consider a weak willed person like her an equal and thus ridicules her for it.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: Her cynical and seemingly aggressive exterior when pushed is a front she uses to mask her various insecurities and trauma from others. Dig further underneath all that and you'll get the same loving, innocent young girl she was as a child.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: With her sister Manaka. Ayaka is basically a black haired version of her older sister.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Starts out cowardly and has to rely on Saber to get her out of trouble. She would have eventually grown out of this thanks to Saber's support. According to the script, she grew enough to take down Sancraid Phahn by herself in a duel that apparently left the room they were in devastated and Ayaka standing victorious over the dying Sancraid.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Ayaka's life began crashing down in just one night when Manaka, the older sister that she admires, drags her out of her bed to use her as a sacrifice to the Grail and/or the Beast of Revelations because she just so happened to speak to Saber not too long ago before this. She then gets to witness the many young girls Manaka compelled to sacrifice themselves as Grail fuel jump to their very gory deaths right in front of her. As Manaka grabs her by the hair and taunts her by telling her that all she's good for is that she's the final ingredient for the Beast, she calls out to their father who arrives in the nick of time and tries to rescue her from her sister's clutches...only for him to get horribly butchered by said sister while Ayaka can do nothing but cry and scream helplessly. Just as Manaka was about to throw her down the pit like everyone else, Saber saves her, but she also gets to see the lovely, gruesome image of him running her older sister through with his blade, blood and all, killing Manaka before her body falls down the pit itself. With everything that's happened consecutively and with no family left whatsoever, poor Ayaka then loses consciousness from the shock and trauma of it all, wiping the memory of that terrible night from her head. She was only eight at the time. Jump to the present day, and despite not wanting to participate in the new Holy Grail War due to the deaths of her family, she gets dragged into it anyway because of Misaya's paranoia when she orders Lancer to attack her before Ayaka summons Saber, and becomes the primary target of numerous enemy Masters because she's supposedly the weakest and most vulnerable Master in the War. With everything that's happened to her so far, is it any surprise that she's become a very sour person at the beginning of Fate/Prototype?
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: Seeing the older sister she deeply admired sacrifice numerous young girls to the Grail as well as murder their own father before her eyes shook her so badly that she erased the memory of the event and most of what happened in Fragments from her mind. She doesn't even remember Saber, who she's met and spoken to eight years prior. Doesn't help that Manaka also tried to off her too before Saber saved her.
  • Tsundere: Towards Saber, but it's more apparent when her glasses are off.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: While she was still somewhat withdrawn even as a kid, Ayaka was a lot more optimistic and bright-eyed when we first see her as an eight-year-old girl in Fragments. After experiencing a truck load of trauma by the end of that story however, she's lost all that cheer by the time she's a young adult in Prototype proper, becoming a sour and cynical teenager with massive issues.
  • World's Most Beautiful Woman: According to Archer, who considers her more beautiful than all the women of Uruk.
  • Youngest Child Wins: Played with. Between both her and Manaka, Ayaka was actually chosen as the main heir to the Sajyou name due to having been born with more magical circuits than her sister . However, the quality of Ayaka's circuits pales in comparison to that of her sister's, and the general talent that Manaka had meant that she could utilize most types of magecraft with great ease.

    Misaya Reiroukan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fpam4_4479.jpg
Voiced by: Chiwa Saitō (teenager, OVA), Rui Tanabe (child, Fragments of Sky Silver Drama CD)

The Master of Lancer whose Master Rank is "2nd Rank - Cherubim". A confident if morally ambiguous young woman, she is the scion of the Reiroukan household of magi and attends the same school as Ayaka. At the beginning of Fate/Prototype, she orders Lancer to kill Ayaka which leads to the latter summoning Saber to fend Lancer off. Afterwards, she acts as a rival figure to Ayaka during the grail war.

She's also revealed to suffer from a curse and seeks to grail as a method of saving herself.

  • Animal Motifs: Is associated with dogs. Appropriately enough, her Servant is someone whose name basically means the "Hound of Chulainn".
  • Curse: Was a victim of one as a kid which is said to come from her father, who cast it while dying "Die if you do not become a Master and get the Grail". It wasn't actually the case. He was mind-controlled into cursing her, then attempted to undo the curse with no success, and then was killed by the real culprit: Paracelsus, who betrayed the Reiroukans for Manaka. Misaya is said to have later fallen victim to the curse.
  • Disappeared Dad: Much like Ayaka's sister Manaka, Misaya's father was also a Master in the last Holy Grail War and eventually died during the fighting.
  • Foil: Is this to Ayaka. Both grew up as heirs to the magi households and are associated with animals, but whereas Ayaka is a kind girl who suffers from a degree of shyness, a lack of confidence and is associated with birds, Misaya is much more merciless, is generally confident in herself and unafraid of confrontations, is primarily associated with dogs.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Like Ayaka, her life was once saved by Saber when she was a child during the first Tokyo Grail War. However, she doesn't seem to remember him in the present.
  • Hellhound: Her familiars are black dogs.
  • Ms. Fanservice: One of her outfits a simple red dress that shows off cleavage and legs, and one of the illustrations in Fragments of Sky Silver shows Misaya in the nude while taking a shower.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: The reason she sealed away Gae Bolg is because she doesn't fully trust Lancer. This is rooted in Paracelsus' betrayal of her and her father as a child, which caused Misaya to grow cold and distrustful of the people around her well into her teenage years.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: To a degree, her ordering Lancer to kill Ayaka on the off chance she might summon a Servant is what triggers Ayaka's accidental summoning of Saber in the first place.
  • Odd Friendship: Despite her behavior towards Lancer and how Misaya purposely weakens him by sealing away Gae Bolg, the two of them actually do get along rather well.
  • Ojou: Compared to Ayaka and her family, the Reiroukan family are stated to be far higher up in status and during the prequel novels it's shown that Misaya even had maids attending to her as a child. Her general behavior is even reminiscent of a classic arrogant noblewoman.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Seen with six wings in the OVA.
  • Properly Paranoid: Her desire to kill Ayaka at the beginning stems from the belief that she would summon a Servant just like her older sister did during the first grail war. Not long afterwards, she's proven to be right albeit it was by accident on Ayaka's part as she had no desire to take part in the grail war at first and it was Misaya's order to kill her that triggered it.
  • The Rival: To Ayaka, according to the materials associated with ''Prototype''.
  • Sadist:
    • She's a noblewoman with a sadistic streak. Her motivation for summoning Cu Chulainn as her choice of Heroic Spirit is fueled by the knowledge that he was defeated by a woman in his lore and wanted him to know "how scary a woman can be".
Misaya: "I wanted to summon a Hero who was killed by a woman. That way he would know how scary a woman can be."
    • During a confrontation with Saber and Ayaka in the OVA script, Misaya tells Lancer not to kill Saber immediately as she wants to relish his torment and seeks to crush his skull herself after Saber rejects her offer to work together and mocks her by stating she's only the second ranked master rather than the first.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: According to the manual.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: When she was just a child back in Fragments, while still bearing the same haughtiness as her older self, Misaya was an innocent and somewhat naïve young girl who was kind and trusting towards nearly everybody. Paracelsus's betrayal of her and her father changed all of that.
  • Villainesses Want Heroes: To an extent, towards Saber as she believes his strength could be better used serving her needs and desires rather than Ayaka's.
  • We Can Rule Together: Towards Saber. In the script for the OVA, she offers him the chance to switch Masters from Ayaka to her as he considers herself the strongest master in the war. Saber declines however, and calls Misaya out by pointing out her status as second-ranked Cherubim instead of the first ranked Seraphim which means she's not the strongest Master. Misaya does not take that well.
  • You Remind Me of X: She reminds Lancer of his mentor, Scathach. Likewise, when said mentor became playable in Fate/Grand Order, her profile noted that she has a similar demeanor to a certain magus from Tokyo.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: The effects of her curse. She's already reaching her limits by the start of the second Holy Grail War.

    Sancraid Phahn
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_proto_sancraid_2104.png
Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu

The Master of Berserker whose Master Rank is "8th Rank - Void". Supposedly a member of the Church's Assembly of the 8th Sacrament, he is in fact a member of an organization known as the Order of the Templars (presumably a splinter group) and is one of their top heretic hunters. His rank as Master comes from the fact that he's actually an anomaly in the Holy Grail War, being the eighth Master out of seven.

  • Ax-Crazy: When he reveals his true colors to Ayaka, his demeanor changes from a somewhat stoic, albeit still sinister, man to an unhinged maniac who constantly screams out loud whenever he's onscreen.
  • Barrier Warrior: In the script for Fragments of Sky Silver he shows a Bounded Field with Magic Resistance Rank A which he can no-sell all of Ayaka's spells.
  • Church Militant: He's actually not part of the Church, but he still hunts "heretics".
  • Faux Affably Evil: Once he reveals his true colors, he seems rather jovial, but his comments are incisively hateful.
  • Laughing Mad: Once he reveals his true intentions.
  • Numerological Motif: The number 8.
  • Obviously Evil: His general appearance makes it rather plain that he's not really someone to be trusted.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: "I detest Asians, especially the Japanese."
  • Sinister Minister: Wouldn't be Kirei's analogue if he weren't this. Unlike Kirei though, he's much, much less subtle about the "sinister" part.
  • Slasher Smile: Sports an amazing one during the montage sequence of the extended trailer.

    Aro Isemi
Voiced by: Megumi Ogata

The Master of Rider whose Master Rank is "3rd Rank - Thrones". Although seemingly the youngest of the Masters, he's actually as old if not older than Ayaka is. His current appearance is the result of his body's degrading health, not having much time left by the time he summoned Rider whom he befriends. After his death, Rider seeks to revive his fallen Master to give him the life he deserves.

  • Early-Bird Cameo: Briefly appears in the prequel novels during which he meets the First War's Rider.
  • Nice Guy: That's more or less how he won over Rider's trust and respect. And as well as the First War's Rider as seen in Fragments.
  • No Name Given: In the OVA at least. A fanbook later revealed his name to be "Isemi". The prequel novels later reveal that his full name is "Aro Isemi".
  • Older Than They Look: Though he's described as looking like a ten-year-old at best, Isemi is revealed in Fragments to have been around long enough that he was considered to be a Master-Candidate for his clan during the previous Holy Grail War.
  • Sole Survivor: Of the Isemi Clan that was wiped out by Assassin on the orders from Manaka during Fragments.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: The kid was that gentle and that doomed. It's because of this that Rider wants to revive him as he sees Isemi as someone robbed of his life and wants to ensure he gets a second chance.
  • Walking Spoiler: His existence and fate are tied heavily to Rider's motivations in Fate/Prototype.
  • You Remind Me of X: He reminds Fragments Rider of his best friend and foster brother, Moses. They even share the same VA in the Drama CDs.

    Master of Archer
The Master of Archer whose Master Rank is "5th Rank - Virtues". A rich businessman and magus who owns a skyscraper in Tokyo. It's through his influence that Archer became accustomed to the modern world as opposed to his counterpart in Fate/stay night.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Much like with Isemi, he appears in Fragments as well. In which, it's revealed he personally knew Nigel.
  • Fiction 500: He's described as being so filthy rich that he considers classical cars as "chump change".
  • I Gave My Word: Towards Nigel. Promising to get rid of his body should something happen to him in exchange for information about the Holy Grail War.
  • No Name Given: So far his name has yet to have been revealed.

    Manaka Sajyou (SPOILERS)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fpam3_1392.jpg
Voiced by: Aki Toyosaki

The previous winner of the 1st Tokyo Holy Grail War whose Master Rank is "1st Rank - Seraphim". She is Ayaka's older sister, a young girl who was an immensely talented magus since birth. Her Servant in the previous war was Saber, and despite having won the war, Manaka was seemingly slain by their own father according to Ayaka's memories. In truth however, Manaka was the one who attempted to kill Ayaka while her father tried to save her but was killed. Saber would then arrive and kill Manaka himself, dumping her body into the abyss of the greater grail's cavern afterwards.

Despite her death, Manaka would later return to life thanks to the grail, retaining her status as the 1st Ranked Master, and serves as the Master of the Beast-Class Servant. She is bent on reuniting with her beloved prince, Saber, and plans on using the Beast to grant him his wish to save Britain.

Manaka also serves as one of the two main characters of the light novel prequel Fate/Prototype: Fragments of Sky Silver where it details the events of the first Tokyo Holy Grail War that she and Saber took part in that occurred 8 years prior to Fate/Prototype. She's also the main character of the side story Fate/Labyrinth, where Manaka finds herself in an alternate timeline taking part in a sub-species Holy Grail War where her Servant is a female King Arthur.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Her original death was treated this way in the audio adaptation of Fragments. After Arthur literally stabs her in the back just as she was about to sacrifice Ayaka to the Beast, she cries out over how the pain hurts her so much and sincerely apologizes to Arthur while regretting how she couldn't see him smile one last time.
  • Always Someone Better: To Ayaka. Ayaka's inferiority complex in Prototype stems mostly from Manaka being comparatively more talented and prodigious unlike her.
  • The Antichrist: Strongly suggested to be one due to being called Potnia Theron, compared to evil dragons, having a Beast related attribute that makes her the master of all the Beasts, and how she plans on bringing about the world Arthur wishes for by using the Beast summoned by the Grail to kill most of humanity.
  • Ax-Crazy: She's an insane and outright ruthless sociopath who would commit any atrocity that would help take her one step closer to fulfilling her beloved Saber's wish. All while enjoying it and wearing a smile on her face even. Her body count in Fragments is huge.
  • Back from the Dead: Was brought back to life by the grail after her death at the end of the first Holy Grail War. How exactly has yet to be elaborated upon either, as lore indicates that true resurrection of the dead is near impossible, save for extremely specific circumstances.
  • Big Bad: Her actions drive forward a majority of the plot in Fragments in Sky Silver, and she also serves as the final adversary that Ayaka and Saber must face in Fate/Prototype itself.
  • Born Winner: At the age of 12 she is already incredibly proficient in every form of magecraft in the known world, and described as being so talented that she surpasses magi from the Age of Gods. Then it turns out that she's been connected to the Root since birth, practically making her all but outright omnipotent.
  • But Not Too Foreign: Like Ayaka, Manaka is Half-British through their mother. This explains her noticeable blonde hair in contrast to her dark haired father and sister.
  • Cain and Abel: The Cain to Ayaka's Abel complete with attempted sororicide in Fragments.
  • Came Back Wrong: The twist is that she was already wrong to begin with.
  • Child Prodigy: She was only 12 during Fragments but was considered an exceptionally talented magus for her age, with her rank as Master in that War acknowledging this. It's noted that she has an innate connection to the Root and that she had few magic circuits in her but they were absolutely unrivaled in regards to quality.
  • Combat Tentacles: She can use the contents of the Greater Grail that way.
  • Cool Big Sis: To Ayaka before her true evil nature and obsession over Saber took over her in Fragments. She was the only person that Manaka managed to act somewhat friendly towards as she was detached from everything else including her own father.
  • The Corrupter: Being around her can make servants do questionable things or even betray their beliefs. In Fragments of Sky Silver, she turns Assassin and Caster to her side and that causes both to do things far worse than they normally would do while serving her.
  • Creepy Blue Eyes: Serves as an evil contrast to her sister's Innocent Blue Eyes.
  • Creepy Child: Her father notes that growing up, she acted more like an emotionless doll rather than a human being as a child. Meeting Saber drastically changed her personality into something resembling that of a typical young girl her age but with a twist.
  • Cute Is Evil: Aside from Illya, she is the most adorable villain in the series, a cute blue-eyed child who is as beautiful as her sister. She is also the Big Bad who is far crazier than even Illya ever was, being willing to massacre many innocents to summon the Beast of Revelation and “save Britain” so Arthur will love her for it.
  • Demonic Possession: In Fate/Labyrinth, her wandering spirit is drawn into the Seventh Labyrinth of Caubac Alcatraz and unwittingly takes control of Norma Goodfellow. Under Manaka's control, Norma summons Saber Artoria to participate in the Subcategory Holy Grail War and joins up with Robin Hood, Medea and True Assassin. While Manaka loses control of Norma at the entrance of the Labyrinth's fourth floor because of the Beast recalling her to her home world, she would later return to help Norma destroy that instance of the Holy Grail.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Why did she suddenly decide to try to sacrifice her younger sister Ayaka to the Beast of Revelation when she was fine about not involving her in the War whatsoever prior? Ayaka had the nerve to speak to her beloved Saber one night, never mind the fact that Ayaka wasn't even the one who initiated the conversation between them!
  • Dissonant Serenity: Even when sacrificing people to the Grail and performing other atrocities, she always smiles and displays no malice.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: Gives a surprisingly poignant one to Saber in the final Drama CD adaptation of Fragments moments after he runs her through with his sword to save Ayaka from her.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: Her dress looks a LOT like a Sweet Lolita one.
  • Enfant Terrible: She did all her horrible past deeds before turning 14.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Extra Saber's own nutty enthusiasm threw even Manaka for a loop in the Extra team's Hanafuda scenario included in Fate Stay Night's PS Vita port.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Shiki Ryougi. Both have connections to the Root, but whereas Shiki is usually rude but benign, Manaka is polite but villainous. Void Shiki also usually keeps herself dormant and not really interested in using her power whereas Manaka is the opposite as she decides to use her power to try and rewrite the world to suit her and Saber's desires.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • In the original story, this is subverted with Saber, as it is made clear her "love" is possessive and only an attempt to fulfill her fantasy. But in the Drama CD, their relationship is made more genuine; while it still caused her to commit her evil acts in the story, she really loves Saber, and all her atrocities were done for his sake.
    • Subverted with Ayaka, who she may have cared for in the past given how she was the only other person besides Saber Manaka was openly and perhaps genuinely pleasant to, but that doesn't stop her from trying to sacrifice Ayaka to the Grail and putting her through one hell of a traumatic experience before doing so.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: Manaka's seemingly angelic appearance as a cute pre-teen girl is a mask for her evil and calculating true nature inside.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: Sometime before the Grail War took place since their mother passed away after Ayaka's birth. From then on, the very girlish Manaka handled most of the housework; she's certainly seen making breakfast in some illustrations.
  • For the Evulz: In Fragments, some of the actions she takes can fall into this category due to them having no real motive aside from the fact that she can.
  • Giggling Villain: Especially by the time Proto itself rolls around.
  • Impossibly-Low Neckline: During Fragments, she wears her dress normally. In the present, she unbuttons her dress and lets it hang past her shoulders.
  • In the Back: How Saber killed her in the first war.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: Played With. She was actually born with less magical circuits than Ayaka which made the latter the actual heir to the Sajyou household rather than her. Despite this, the quality of her circuits far exceed that of anyone that had come before her and is part of what allows her to be such an amazing magus despite her age.
  • Kick the Dog: On top of horribly traumatizing Ayaka as a child by letting her watch as she compelled many girls to kill themselves to feed the Grail as well as brutally murder their father in front of her, Manaka makes it a point of telling Ayaka that all she's "special" for as a helplessly ordinary person, someone she normally deems useless, is as an ingredient for the Beast she's nurturing.
  • Lady and Knight: She wants to be the Black Lady to Saber's Knight in Shining Armor. Badly.
  • Lack of Empathy: The reason why she's so unhinged. Because of her connection to the Root since birth, Manaka has been gifted knowledge and power that far exceeds anyone in the entirety of the Nasuverse save for maybe Shiki Ryougi. While she's able to act the part of loving older sister and dutiful daughter to her family, she's unable to truly empathize with the people around her and only sees them as insects far beneath her. The only person who's an exception to this is Saber, whom Manaka fell in love with at first sight after she had a vision of meeting him one day, and devotes all her power to granting his wish of saving Britain.
  • Love at First Sight: Revealed to be the case with her towards Saber. Having foreseen her meeting with him at some point, she held expectations of her destined one and was more than happy to see that he exceeded them.
  • Love Makes You Evil: Her meeting Saber is also the reason why she would later go on to commit the atrocities she does in the story. All for the sake of her beloved prince.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: Just seeing her sister Ayaka speaking to Saber and eventually succeeding in persuading him to let go of his wish towards the Grail was motivation enough for Manaka to attempt to use Ayaka as Grail fuel in Fragments' climax.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: What pre-teen/teen girl would describe her love for "her prince" to what she'd feel if her intestines were pulled out of her stomach?
  • Older Than They Look: She's four years older than Ayaka, but she still retains the appearance of a 12 year old since she died at that age.
  • The Omnipotent: Referred to as such during Fragments of Sky Silver. This is due to her innate connection to the Root since birth, a trait shared only by none other than Shiki Ryougi, whose third personality is considered to be nigh omnipotent as well. If not due to certain restrictions, Manaka actually has the capacity to grant Saber's wish herself.
  • Powered by a Forsaken Child: Sacrificed girls and her own father to the Holy Grail. She would have sacrificed Ayaka if Saber hadn't stopped her.
  • Psychic-Assisted Suicide: During the first war, she forced numerous little girls to sacrifice themselves to the Grail as fuel for it so that she doesn't have to give up Saber himself.
  • Red Baron: She is referred to as Potnia Theron by numerous characters due to her powers. Brynhild also refers to her as an Evil Dragon.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Killed her own father, as said above, and sacrificed him to the Grail.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Her standard outfit in Fate/Prototype proper is still the same dress she wore during the First War. Only unbuttoned and off the shoulders to reveal her Master Degree of Seraphim on her chest. Convenient angles prevent it from going into full on exposure. And of course, this also treads into Fan Disservice territory, given the aforementioned emphasized open wound on her chest, which is described as still bleeding, along with her dress being drenched in blood.
  • Shared Family Quirks: As mentioned in Ayaka's entry, both Sajyou sisters find entertainment in the morbid and strange. For Manaka, said interests can turn into reality very quickly to the misfortune of anyone within her target range.
  • Significant Birth Date: Downplayed as her actual birth date is never brought up or even important in the actual story. However, it's notable that Manaka, being 12 years old in 1991, would have been born in the year 1979. This is the exact same year that the aforementioned Shiki Ryougi was born in as well.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: She loves Saber and only him. When she meets Altria in Fate/Labyrinth spin-off, Manaka is mildly interested in her Servant's female version but ultimately prefers Arthur instead.
  • Start of Darkness: Before the Holy Grail War, Manaka was a good big sister towards Ayaka and overall a dutiful daughter to her family. The moment she meets and falls in love with Saber however... the results are not pretty.
  • The Stoic: Prior to meeting Saber, she was rather detached and somewhat somber outside of her interactions with her younger sister, Ayaka. Like Shiki Ryougi, her connection to the Root from birth is likely what made her empty in the first place.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Being one of two of the only known characters to be directly connected to the Root since birth, Manaka's omnipotence earns her a spot as one of the most powerful beings to exist in the Nasuverse. She's all but stated to be stronger than her own Servant at least, has mastered all forms of magecraft that far exceed those that existed during the Age of the Gods, and legitimately has the capacity to grant Saber's wish herself if not for her low magic circuit count, the Counter Force's existence, and the fact that Camelot's fall is under a Quantum Timelock.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: With her sister Ayaka. As children in Fragments of Sky Silver, Manaka basically looked like an older blonde haired Ayaka. It's likely that had she been allowed to age that she would have resembled the teenage Ayaka seen in Fate/Prototype proper and as well as the Ayaka Sajyou from Fate/strange Fake.
  • Supreme Chef: She's her family's main cook after her mother died. She even whipped up a literal feast of delicious food for Saber to eat for breakfast.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Her actions and the atrocities she committed during Fragments after summoning Saber are not things you would expect a 12 year old young girl to do at her age.
  • Villain Protagonist: Fragments is her story, in a sense, just like present Prototype is Ayaka's.
  • Undead Barefooter: After being resurrected as a sort of undead being, she stopped bothering to wear her shoes.
  • Wound That Will Not Heal: The one on her torso and back. Apparently, it still bleeds.
  • Yandere: For Saber. She was willing to kill her own sister just because Saber had talked with her.
  • You Remind Me of X: Gilgamesh is disgusted with her because she reminds him of his hated enemy Ishtar.

    Tatsumi Kitano

Tatsumi as he appears in Fragments of Sky Silver
Voiced by: Atsushi Tamaru (Drama CD)

The Master of Berserker whose Master Rank is "7th Rank - Princes". Originally a high school student, he gets caught up in the Holy Grail War after accidentally summoning Berserker through one of his grandfather's mementos. Believing in justice, he participates in the war to save Tokyo from the dangers that the Holy Grail War presents to it.

  • Achievements in Ignorance: With no training in Magecraft and no knowledge of the supernatural being real, he summons Berserker just by innocently reading the summon chant from his grandfather's mementos.
  • Expy: Very clearly of Emiya Shirou as a Master who got involved in the Grail War via accidental summoning and has a strong belief in the idea of justice. His reason for participating in the war is basically the same as Shirou's own.
  • Heroic Wannabe: He eagerly joined the Grail War to be a hero. With no training or experience, he quickly gets himself killed and brought back as a zombie forced to attack people.
  • Justice Will Prevail: Said to be a "justice attitude person", and seeks to defeat all the magi who control Tokyo by evil ritual magic. Even as a Zombie this trait of his remains rooted into his being.
  • Magic Eye: It's said that Kitano's right eye is actually a kind of Mystic Eye, which temporarily paralyzes people when he focuses on them.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: Described as such. He wasn't even aware of his mystic eye until the war had started.
  • Naïve Newcomer: Unlike other masters, Kitano had no idea of what the Holy Grail War even was before being chosen. This gets him killed by Hassan of Serenity.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: He's brought back as a barely sentient corpse by Paracelsus to let Hassan have someone she can touch. He repeats over and over how he doesn't want to kill anyone.

The Master of Lancer whose Master Rank is "2nd Rank - Cherubim". He's a magus from the Clock Tower, but as a result of his research, he was in danger of being assigned as a Sealing Designate by the Association. He takes part in the Holy Grail War in an attempt to win the grail in exchange for his freedom.

  • Fantastic Drug: His main specialty as a magus. They're potent enough that he was about to be warranted a sealing designation had he never decided to take part in the Holy Grail War.
  • Love Potion: Able to make one potent enough to even affect a Servant like Lancer. He uses this to his advantage to help spur her on against Saber as she gets more powerful the more in-love she is with her opponents.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: His fate after Saber's battle with Lancer is unknown. It's later revealed during the epilogue that he died, likely at the hands of Manaka as she was one of the last people to meet with him.

The Master of Archer whose Master Rank is "5th Rank - Virtues". A kind young woman who had lost her son less than a year ago before the Holy Grail War occurs. Her wish is "for all mothers and children to be saved."

    Shizuri Isemi
Voiced by: Motoi Koyanagi (Drama CD)

The Master of Rider whose Master Rank is "4th Rank - Dominion". He is an elderly gentleman who is the current head of a clan of magi whose magic circuits are slowly dying out. As a result, he and his clansmen have learned how to adapt to modern technologies in compensation for the weakening lineage.

  • Cool Mask: Wears one as shown here.
  • Grave Robbing: Rider accuses him of this, as the necklace used to summon him belonged to his wife and which by itself could only be obtained by breaking into her tomb. It's never revealed if he himself actually did this however.
  • Killed Off for Real: Him and his entire clan end up getting killed by Assassin.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: As revealed in concept art, he's quite spiffy underneath that coat of his.

    Aritoshi Reiroukan
Voiced by: Eiji Itou (Drama CD)

The Master of Caster whose Master Rank is "3rd Rank - Thrones". He is the father of Misaya and an elite mage with strong connections to the government and businesses.

  • Expy: Of Tokiomi Tohsaka, just like Hiroki Sajyou. Even down to being betrayed and killed by someone he trusted the most.
  • Informed Ability: As the third-ranked Master among the seven, he could be considered the third-best mage among the lot yet is unable to show off any of his abilities as Caster betrays him for Manaka.
  • Named by the Adaptation: The official manga adaptation reveals that his full name is "Aritoshi Reiroukan".
  • No Name Given: His given name is never revealed in either the original novels or the audio adaptation. The manga adaptation, on the other hand, finally reveals that his name is "Aritoshi".
  • Offing the Offspring: Said to have fatally cursed his daughter Misaya. He didn't. In reality he tried to save her from the curse, but was killed before he could do it.
  • The Ghost: His physical appearance is never seen throughout the prequels until his design is finally revealed in the manga adaptation.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Very little is known about him before he died.

    Seiji Jinga
Voiced by: Atsushi Imaruoka (Drama CD)

The Master of Assassin whose Master Rank is "6th Rank - Powers". He is an arrogant man who seeks to make a name for himself by winning the Holy Grail War. Unfortunately for him, he's killed by Assassin as soon as he's summoned her.

  • Large Ham: As heard during the Drama CD.
  • Love Makes You Dumb: More like sexual attraction, but same idea. The moment he sees Assassin, he's so taken with desire for her that ends up he kisses her which proves fatal thanks to Assassin's Noble Phantasm.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Having come from a small-time magus family, he was intent on winning the Holy Grail War and making a name for himself but gets offed by Assassin minutes after summoning her.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Kind of. To be fair to him, he probably had no way of knowing that Assassin's very body is toxic to the touch, but still, giving in to a desire to kiss her was still not a good idea, no matter what.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Killed off by Assassin right after she had been summoned by him.
