Main Characters:

    In General

  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul: They become friends as a result of Hajime saving Natsumi.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Hajime saves Natsumi from Sato, arriving just before she set her plan in motion to kill her and prevents her being killed.
    • Fuyuhiko saves Hajime from being tortured by having his fingers cut off one by one so that thugs could find Natsumi in the Akutagawa Mall by attacking them as they were attacking Hajime.
    • Hajime saves Natsumi a second time as Hideki and/or his gang was going to rape and murder her to start a clan war.
    • Just after Chiaki had her game system stolen by 3 delinquents, Hajime shows up after four months of Yakuza training, and he confronts the delinquents and they give it back after recognizing him as being affiliated with the Kuzuryus.
  • Big Little Sister: Downplayed, but Natsumi's slightly bigger than her brother, being 5cm(2") taller and 2kg(4.5 lbs) heavier than Fuyuhiko. Kaede being Fuyuhiko's little sister in this version is a bigger example, as she's 10cm taller(4") and 10kg(22 lbs) heavier than Fuyuhiko.
  • Bodyguard Crush: There's mutual crushes between the bodyguard and guarded of both pairs.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Peko is noted to have a large bust and be very attractive and causes Eri to be jealous of their size. Natsumi, when she shows off her bikini is noted by Hajime to have larger breasts than he expected.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Fuyuhiko gets significantly more drunk than Hajime off of two beers, likely due to Hajime's greater body mass. Hajime still gets pretty drunk, too, likely due to it being their first time drinking.
  • Deadpan Snarker: All of them, even Peko, get in on it from time to time.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Hajime and Natsumi, even before they become a couple. Fuyuhiko even points this trope out by name, regarding them.
Fuyuhiko: I'm not fuckin' blind. I see the way you two talk to each other. You bicker like an old married couple and you’re always together. Seriously, you may not realize it, but you are way closer to her than anyone else has ever gotten.
  • Luminescent Blush: All of them get this at various points, mostly in Ship Tease moments between them.
  • Moe Couplet: Hajime and Natsumi both bring out the better qualities in each other. She stops him from being as cynical and nihilistic and brings out his protective qualities, while he also brings out her Hidden Heart of Gold and causes her to grow nicer as she knows him. They also stop each other from wanting a talent, Hajime through Natsumi and her family increasing his confidence. Natsumi through Hajime telling her that Fuyuhiko already loves her as his sister and she doesn't need a talent to be his sister. They also argue Like an Old Married Couple in a really cute way. Ibuki even calls them "such a cute couple!".
  • Official Couple: Hajime and Natsumi and then later Fuyuhiko and Peko get together as official couples.
  • Opposites Attract: Both pairs. Hajime is cynical and nihilistic in the beginning, but still a Nice Guy, but eventually gets together with Natsumi, although it's only after she Took a Level in Kindness and stopped being a bully that they actually get together. Though she's still pretty brash and haughty. Then there's kind and quiet Peko and brash and loudmouthed Fuyuhiko.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: Natsumi throws out several homophobic insults at Mahiru and Sato in Part 1 and Fuyuhiko says that Hajime's toast sounded "gay".
  • Related in the Adaptation: Kaede Akamatsu from V3 is strongly implied and later confirmed by the author to be the twin sister of Natsumi and also Fuyuhiko's little sister in this universe.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Fuyuhiko and Natsumi both rarely go a sentence without cursing.
  • Sworn Brothers: Hajime and Fuyuhiko become sworn brothers, performing the sakazuki ritual together in the final chapter.
  • Sympathetic Murderer: All but Fuyuhiko kill someone at some point in the story:
    • Peko kills first Mukuro Ikusaba in self defense and then later kills Hideki after he had brainwashed her and he was about to kill Fuyuhiko.
    • Hajime kills two Korean mafia thugs that had captured and tortured him and Takuo. Funaki through slashing his throat and Okada through beating him to death with a hammer. Later, he kills Takuo as Takuo was trying to stage a coup and take over the Kuzuryus and Minamotos by nearly disemboweling him and chopping his head off.
    • Natsumi kills Eri with an Antidote injector to the eye as Eri was trying to choke her out.
  • Yakuza: All four get their tattoos at the end of the 2nd part, officially joining the Kuzuryu-gumi.

    Hajime Hinata
The ahoge'd protagonist. He becomes Natsumi's bodyguard after saving her life at her father's request.

  • Adaptational Badass: Takes several levels in badass, first from training with Peko and then training with Takuo when joining the Kuzuryu-gumi. Zig-zagged in that he doesn't become Izuru Kamukura, meaning he never gets his badass traits.
  • Amateur Sleuth:
    • He's tasked to kill Funaki and get back the stolen Kuzuryu-gumi money, and has to track him down with Takuo, and the two work well as a "Good Cop/Bad Cop" duo.
    • Later, he's tasked by the Kuzuryu-gumi to investigate the Student Council Killing Game. He admits that he doesn't get very far and thinks to himself that Kyoko is probably doing a lot better. He does a lot better when investigating during the "Ultimate Contest of Blood" trial.
  • Character Development: His interactions with Natsumi and her family boosts his confidence, so that he eventually no longer feels the need to get a "talent" and he doesn't become Izuru Kamukura.
  • Chick Magnet: Like in the game, Hajime is pretty good at charming the ladies and Chiaki even asks if he's a "player" after he saves Natsumi's life, and about every girl he interacts with, there's some flirting or what sounds like flirting from one of the parties. He doesn't do anything that could be considered cheating after getting together with Natsumi, the closest would probably be when he hugs Chiaki to comfort her when she's in a Heroic BSoD.
  • Combat Pragmatist: One of the main things that Hajime learns from Peko during their sparring and training sessions is this. He wins against two people that would normally have killed him because of this. He wins against Hideki because he threw some of his own blood in Hideki's face before beating him down and nearly killing him. Against Takuo, after being disarmed, Hajime uses a laser scalpel to rush Takuo as Takuo was rushing him and nearly disembowel him.
  • Declaration of Protection: Gives one for Natsumi and later Chiaki after she was bothered by 3 delinquents. Him being a protector is referenced with his Yakuza tattoos being of a blue dragon, which symbolizes protection, among others.
  • Determinator: In Part 2, when Natsumi gets kidnapped by Hideki and his thugs, he's first pistol whipped and knocked unconscious by one of them and thrown in the trunk of a car. After he wakes up, he MacGyvers his way out of the trunk, before confronting Hideki and his gang by himself. He then gets a beating and kicking from some of the thugs. After Hideki explains his plan, he gets several slashes on his hands and then gets stabbed for good measure, before getting his Heroic Second Wind and then eventually blinding Hideki with some of his own blood from his stab wound and then successfully beating down Hideki. He only passes out from blood loss after he successfully cuts Natsumi loose.
  • The Dulcinea Effect: He saves Natsumi from Sato after only knowing her for a few days and didn't consider her a friend, but he couldn't let her get killed.
  • Fingore: Is threatened with this when thugs at the Akutagawa Mall are trying to find Natsumi. They "only" cut him to the bone before they are interrupted by Fuyuhiko punching one of them.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He gets several scars throughout the story. He gets a forehead scar from getting his head smashed into a mirror at the Akutagawa Mall by a thug. He gets a slice on his cheek and numerous cuts on his hands and a stab wound from Hideki, as well.
  • Heroic BSoD:
  • Heroic Build: It's mentioned several times how his physique improves through the first two parts, first with his training from Peko and then training with Takuo for joining the Kuzuryu-gumi.
  • Hormone-Addled Teenager: Downplayed, but before going with Natsumi, Fuyuhiko and Peko to the Kuzuryu beach house and again when waiting for them to come out of the beach house, he happily thinks about what Natsumi and Peko would look like in their swimsuits. He's not a lech, but he's still a teenage boy.
  • Idiot Hair: His ahoge is mentioned several times throughout the story.
  • Improvised Weapon: His yakuza nickname, "Hinata the Hammer" is gained from him killing Okada, a Korean mafia thug with a hammer and severely injuring Shiratori, another Korean thug, with it.
  • Nice Guy: Several times, he's remarked as most people not really guessing that he'd be a Yakuza.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: Starts out as one, albeit a nihilistic and cynical one. With his character development, he's less cynical and nihilistic after his relationship with Natsumi blossoms. After becoming a member of the Kuzuryu-gumi, he's definitely less so, with Hajime likening himself to a lion prowling among ruins when he's back at school.
  • The Paragon: He's really good at getting people to better themselves, just like in the game, this is especially evident with Natsumi.
  • Precision F-Strike: He rarely curses, in contrast to the Kuzuryu siblings, so when he does, it hits home. He drops the F bomb once in Part 1, telling Natsumi that they don't need a "talent" or to get into the main course. He says it three times in part 2, once when he and Natsumi break up and twice after he kills two Korean mafia and seemingly killed a third and goes in to a Heroic BSoD. He mentally drops two more when he thinks to himself that "I'm a fucking idiot" and a "fucking moron" when Chiaki gets him to realize why Natsumi broke up with him and agreed to the Arranged Marriage.
He turned to Natsumi and said two words.
    “Fuck it”
Natsumi was shocked, both at hearing Hajime curse out loud and also him giving her such a blunt response.
  • Scrubbing Off the Trauma: He takes frequent showers while in his Heroic BSoD, after he killed two people and was pretty responsible for a third, but he always still felt unclean.
  • The Smart Guy: Maaya specifically says that she chose to partner with him in round 2 of the Killing Game because he was a clear thinker and would think of things not simply as a Yakuza, but could bargain with him for her claim earlier of "killing" Matsushige. He also is by far the most capable person in the trial, driving almost everything in it.
  • Spanner in the Works: Multiple times throughout the story. He successfully stops Sato's attempt to kill Natsumi in Part 1. In Part 2, he thwarts the arranged marriage between Natsumi and Hideki with his Anguished Declaration of Love to her. Shortly after that, he thwarts Hideki's attempt to start a Clan War by defeating him in a fight.
  • These Hands Have Killed: After killing two and being directly responsible for a third person, Hajime looked down at his hands, which were "literally drenched in blood". He immediately washed his hands and was later noted to take more frequent showers because of feeling "unclean".
  • Training from Hell: Goes through some courtesy of Takuo when being trained to be a full member of the Kuzuryu-gumi.

    Natsumi Kuzuryu
The sister of Fuyuhiko and daughter of the Oyabun of the Kuzuryu-gumi.

  • The Atoner: Starting in Chapter 10 of Part 1, she becomes this, apologizing first to her class and then later to Mahiru and Sato.
  • Big Brother Worship: Her initial characterization has her wanting a talent so she would be worthy of being Fuyuhiko's sister. Hajime is able to break her out of this after he saves her, saying that Fuyuhiko doesn't want or need her to have a talent, she is his sister, no matter what.
  • Blush Sticker: She's depicted as having these in the pictures that are sprinkled throughout the story and sometimes is mentioned to have a slight blush on her cheeks in the story.
  • Break the Haughty: Sato nearly murdering her, then Fuyuhiko tearing her a new one offscreen, followed by Hajime's kindness, but also giving her a pointed, yet calm breakdown of her role in everything allows her to be able to redeem herself.
  • The Bully: Is one when first introduced. Starting in Chapter 10, she's a Reformed Bully.
  • Catapult Nightmare: She has one in Part 2 after a nightmare of Hajime getting shot.
  • Damsel in Distress: Becomes one in in each part. Hajime rescues her in the first two parts, and she is able to kill Eri as Eri was trying to choke her out in the third part.
  • Deuteragonist: Is one to the story. Hajime is the main perspective of the story, but chances are if there is a perspective shift, it will go to her perspective.
  • Easily Forgiven: She even lampshades this when Mahiru somewhat quickly forgives her for her years of bullying her in chapter 10.
Natsumi: “But how can you say that? It can’t be that easy,"
Mahiru: “Why not? There’s already enough despair in this world. We don't need to add any more to it. We don't have to be enemies. I want to make a fresh start, just like you do."
    • Averted with Sato, who accepts her apology, but doesn't forgive Natsumi.
  • First Friend: Hajime is the first friend she retains in years due to her bullying and personality.
  • Friendless Background: Because of her poor people skills and personality, she doesn't have any friends, and even Hajime doesn't think of her as a friend until after he saves her life. Hajime manages to get her to improve herself and she becomes friends with several other people during the story.
  • Green-Eyed Monster:
    • Why she started bullying Mahiru was that she was jealous of Mahiru having talent and friends while she had none of that.
    • A downplayed example, but while Hajime and Chiaki were talking while he was in the hospital recovering from the broken ribs and arm from defending her, Natsumi feels awkwardly sad and jealous, like a third wheel and then clarifies she feels "Those two were a bike and she was just an old tire rotting in the gutter."
  • Heel–Face Turn: For a given amount of heel. She starts off as a bitchy, haughty bully, but by the time of chapter 10 of Part 1, she apologizes to the class and later Mahiru and Sato for her bullying.
  • Heroic BSoD: She goes into one after she kills Eri and was nearly choked to death, complete with a Thousand-Yard Stare and Hajime thought she looked like a lost animal. Hajime breaks her out of it a little when he meets her and lets her cry into his chest. She goes right back into it when she and Hajime end up in a Despair Room together and breaks out of it when she "randomly" chooses the code that gets them out of the room.
  • I Just Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Why she breaks up with Hajime in Part 2, after Hideki points out that Hajime will likely be killed when protecting her, so she agrees to the Arranged Marriage to save Hajime's life.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: She and Hajime have what's implied to be Their First Time after she is in awe of him beating up 3 ruffians that were harassing her.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: After Hajime convinces her to better herself and she gets more friends, she's this.
"She was still sarcastic, smug, and abrasive at times, but compared to how she was when he first met her, the difference was night and day."
  • Kind Hearted Cat Lover: "Kind-hearted" may be a little extreme, but by the time she gets Joe-kun, she's much nicer than she was at the beginning of the story.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: When she was young, due to her family's status as yakuza, other kids were afraid of her and stayed away. This is what caused her to become a bully, as she reasoned that if they feared her, she would give them a reason to fear her.
  • Mafia Princess: A Yakuza equivalent, she's the daughter of the Oyabun of the Kuzuryu-gumi, the largest Yakuza syndicate in Japan.
  • Ms. Fanservice: A downplayed example, but she is mentioned as having a very nice body, and we get to see her in a bikini in one of the handful of pictures during Part 1.
  • No Social Skills: Has very poor social skills due to years of being a friendless bully. Even Fuyuhiko calls her people skills "pretty much garbage". Late in Part 1, Hajime works with her to get her more friends and rebuild her people skills.
  • Reformed, but Not Tamed: She's a Reformed Bully starting in Chapter 10, but don't expect her to be too nice or any less brash or hot-headed.
  • Rescue Romance: She's unsurprisingly more fond of Hajime after he saves her from Sato, getting a big crush on him. To probably no one's surprise, they become a couple at the end of part 1.
  • Rich Bitch: How she is initially. Her family is one of the wealthiest families in Japan and she's a bratty, bullying bitch in the beginning of the story.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: She has signs of PTSD after the Akutagawa Mall attack, where she saw Hajime covered in blood from defending her and nearly being shot, only being saved when the bullet is a dud. How much worse it gets isn't discussed in the story when she's kidnapped, beaten and then nearly raped and murdered before Hajime was able to rescue her from Hideki and his flunkies shortly afterwards. She also has to witness Hajime being beaten and repeatedly cut and then stabbed before he is able to defeat Hideki and untie her.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Hajime prevents her being murdered by Sato.
  • Supreme Chef: Like mentioned during Fuyuhiko's Free Time events in the game and maybe not to her uncle's degree, but it could be speculated he taught her how to cook. Hajime is surprised about how good a cook she is when she makes fried dumplings for him, calling them "delicious", after he saved her life.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Hajime gets her to better herself and to stop bullying in Part 1. She's still haughty and hot-headed, but is much nicer.
  • Tsundere: Acts like this towards Hajime throughout. Naturally, it gets more "deredere" as their relationship blossoms.
  • When She Smiles: When he first sees her give a genuine smile, it sent shivers down Hajime's spine. When she asks him what he would change in her, the first thing he says is he would like her to smile more.

    Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu

Ultimate Yakuza

  • The Atoner: Feels bad about what his family had done to Peko by raising her to be a Yakuza since birth. He uses the antidote injector he got from Satsuo on her in Part 3 and apologizes for what his family did to her. It's after this that they share their First Kiss.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Has one for Natsumi, unsurprisingly. Hajime and Natsumi think he may go "My Sister Is Off-Limits", but he's mostly just protective of her.
  • The Don: Becomes the Oyabun of the Kuzuryu-gumi when his father is killed in chapter 4 of Part 3.
  • Eye Scream: Is threatened with this when two thugs looking for Natsumi capture him and Hajime, with one of them saying "I think he would look good with an eyepatch.".
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: What he eventually becomes towards Hajime. He's initially aloof and distrustful of Hajime, but warms up to him after a bit.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Averted, while he does warn Hajime about hurting her, that if he does, he'll have Peko beat up Hajime, he doesn't specifically warn Hajime against dating her. Hajime and Natsumi apparently think he'll try and play this straight, though, and try to hide their relationship from him. He tells Hajime in the final chapter of Part 3 that he's known they were together since almost after he first met Hajime and was fine with it, even telling Hajime that there's nobody he'd want with his sister more than Hajime after all he's done for her and the Kuzuryu-gumi. He just doesn't want to have to hear about what they do when they're alone.
  • Nosebleed: Gets one while offering to put sunscreen on a bikini-clad Peko.

    Peko Pekoyama

Ultimate Swordswoman

  • Action Girl: Carrying over from the game and anime, she's this.
  • Amazonian Beauty: She's mentioned to have a muscular, athletic body several times and her beauty is also mentioned, as well.
  • Big Sister Mentor: She's appointed to train Hajime to be a bodyguard for Natsumi. While she's around the same age as him, Hajime knows she's far more knowledgeable in combat and physical fitness.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Becomes this as a result of Hideki/Ryota's mind control technology on Mukuro's phone.
  • Bodyguard Babes: Just like in canon and Hajime thinks of her as a "silver haired beauty".
  • Master Swordswoman: As fitting of her "Ultimate Swordswoman" status.
  • Panty Shot: During her first training session with Hajime, she's standing over him as he's getting ready to do push-ups and he glances up at her before they both remember she's wearing a skirt and him getting a "full view of what was underneath." She blushes and moves away and he apologizes, claiming he didn't see anything. Then he mentally wonders if thongs make it easier to maneuver in combat...
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: This and White Hair, Black Heart are aversions to the tropes, as she's certainly a dangerous person and kills two people, though both kills had good reasons, but she's not evil.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's mentioned to be tall several times, and is 172cm/5'8" tall canonically, and is the Love Interest of Fuyuhiko and Hajime also thinks she's quite attractive.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Presumably why she's taken out of the picture with the Akutagawa Mall incident, since she's such a skilled fighter and marksman, she could have handily foiled the plot.

Hope's Peak Students:

    Mahiru Koizumi

Ultimate Photographer

  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul: She becomes friends with Aiko and Natsumi after Natsumi apologizes for her bullying.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Natsumi throws a bunch of homophobic insults at Mahiru early in Part 1 and Hajime also initially thinks that Mahiru and Sato are a couple as well, until she clears it up that she's not gay, though Sato is.
  • Nice Girl: She's nice and pretty easily forgives Natsumi after Natsumi apologizes to her and Natsumi says that her reasons for bullying were as shitty as they sound, while crying.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: She's the most normal of her friends, despite being an Ultimate and after becoming friends with her, Natsumi finds that she gets along best with Mahiru out of Mahiru's group of friends.
  • Ship Tease: She calls Hajime a "great guy" and gives him a peck on the cheek as thanks for stopping Sato from killing Natsumi, as well as bringing him a bento box while he was in the hospital. He also convinces her to tell Sato her feelings towards her, that she likes her as a friend and isn't interested in her, sexually. She also wonders if he was going to confess his love for her in Chapter 10 and it was hinted they met a few times offscreen, since he met Gundham through her.

    Sato

  • Adaptational Sexuality: While she was Ambiguously Gay in the game and anime, she's explicitly homosexual here as shown in chapter 5 of Part 1.
  • Apologetic Attacker: As she beats up Hajime when attempting to kill Natsumi, she's this and also Blaming the Victim as she apologizes, but tells him it's his fault that her bat is hitting him.
  • Batter Up!: Wields a bat while trying to kill Natsumi at first before she gets disarmed. Later, after Hajime arrives, she breaks at least two of his ribs with it and then his arm as he prevents her from killing Natsumi.
  • Berserker Tears: She starts crying when trying to kill Natsumi and Hajime thinks when he sees her that he "had never seen anyone with a face like hers before. She was ghoulish, terrified, and completely unhinged." as she was crying in anger when trying to kill Natsumi.
  • Blaming the Victim: After she clubs Hajime in the ribs as he's protecting Natsumi, breaking at least two of them, she says "You made me do that!"
  • Bury Your Gays: Averted, she was Ambiguously Gay in the anime and game with her protectiveness of Mahiru, but she's explicitly homosexual in this as shown in chapter 5 of Part 1. However, she survives due to being Spared by the Adaptation because she doesn't succeed in killing Natsumi.
  • No Full Name Given: We only ever know her family name, just like in the game and anime.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Due to her failing to kill Natsumi, she survives. Unbeknownst to her, Hajime uses the favor owed to him by the Kuzuryus to protect her and her family from any repercussions from them. Hajime thinks that a criminal record and being expelled from school is punishment enough for her.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: She accepts Natsumi's apology in chapter 10 of part 1, but says that she thinks Natsumi's years of bullying was unforgivable, which Natsumi accepts. Natsumi similarly accepts her apology for trying to kill her, but doesn't forgive her.

    Chiaki Nanami

Ultimate Gamer

  • Did Not Get The Guy: She doesn't get Hajime, though they do still care for each other a lot.
  • Gamer Chick: Just like in canon, she's shown playing games a lot.
  • Heroic BSoD: She goes into a small one after seeing Nagito kill Junko.
  • I Just Want My Beloved to Be Happy: She has feelings for Hajime, but in Part 2, she helps Hajime get back together with Natsumi when they break up. In their final meeting after graduating, Chiaki has Hajime close his eyes and very nearly kisses him on the lips, but feels guilty and kisses him on the forehead, instead.
  • Nice Girl: Is this. When faced with the possibility of getting Hajime to be with her after he and Natsumi had broken up, when she learns the circumstances of what is happening, she gets him to see Natsumi's point of view of her worry for his safety with him bodyguarding her.
  • Ship Tease:
    • She gets some with Hajime, especially the first half of Part 1. Part 2 includes some, too. After Hajime and Natsumi temporarily break up, she hugs him in Chapter 7. In Chapter 15, Hajime backs down three delinquents that stole her game system when he sees her crying.
    • In the next chapter, When she looked at him with fear after he goes to Junko's lair with a drawn gun and asks if he was also planning to kill Junko and it "felt like a jagged knife in his guts" for her to look at him like that. Then he hugs her as she's in a bit of a Heroic BSoD after she witnessed Nagito shoot Junko and angrily grabs Nagito's neck for endangering her by bringing her with him when he went to kill Junko.
    • During their final meeting during the final chapter of part 2, she feels a "wrenching pain in her chest" when he says he found someone he can't live without in Natsumi. Then, she very nearly kisses him on the lips after asking him to close his eyes and he notably doesn't move away when he could feel her breath on his lips. She doesn't kiss him, feeling guilty over what she was doing and kisses his forehead, instead..
  • Spared by the Adaptation: She survives to graduate.
  • What Does He See in Her?: The author has said that this is her reaction with Natsumi and Hajime being a couple.

    Aiko Umesawa
  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul: She becomes friends with Natsumi.
  • David Versus Goliath: Aiko is pitted against Tomohiko in a razor wire tug-of-war in the Student Council Killing Game.
  • Fingore: She and Tomohiko have to participate in a tug-of-war with razor wire, cutting their hands and fingers badly.
  • Heroic BSoD: After she accidentally kills Tomohiko in the killing game by accidentally pulling the pin in his collar as he was trying to remove the pin in hers, she goes into one. Natsumi helps to break her out of it by hugging her and being there for her.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: She survives the Student Council Killing Game.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: As she's in her Heroic BSoD, she has this.
Aiko was sitting upright in a bed in the corner of the room. The window beside her case pale beams of sunlight into the sterile room. There was a tray by the bed with untouched food. Aiko didn’t even look up at them as they entered. She simply stared off into the distance.

    Gundham Tanaka

Ultimate Breeder

  • Chuunibyou: As in the game and anime he's this. Naturally, Natsumi thinks he's crazy or on something when she first meets him.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Volunteers at an animal rescue shelter, where Natsumi and Hajime go to help out and she adopts her cat, Joe-kun from there.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Or something like that, as he's able to simply tell cats over an intercom to get in their cages and they obey. Yes, Gundham can literally "herd cats".

    Hiyoko Saionji

Ultimate Traditional Dancer

    Ibuki Mioda

Ultimate Musician

  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Natsumi thinks she's a weirdo. Once she acknowledges that Natsumi is part of their friend group, she lightly bites Natsumi's arm, much to her confusion.
  • Delinquent Hair: Has her usual horned, multi-colored hair and Natsumi thinks she looks like a "try-hard delinquent".
  • Nice Girl: Despite thinking she's weird, even Natsumi thinks of Ibuki that "there was scarcely a more innocent and kind-hearted girl in the entire school."

    Mikan Tsumiki

Ultimate Nurse

  • Adaptational Heroism: As far as is shown in the story, she never became seduced and brainwashed by Junko and her associates.
  • Shrinking Violet: Her only scene has her being worried and apologizing profusely over Hajime hearing her humming, which Hajime found "melodious". Hajime got more and more baffled over her repeated apologies, despite Hajime trying to calm her down while he was in the hospital.

    Kyoko Kirigiri

Ultimate Detective

  • Great Detective: Unsurprisingly for the Ultimate Detective, she's good at getting information.
  • Never Suicide: She rightfully thinks that Ryota Mitarai didn't commit suicide and that it was just made to look like suicide.
  • Perp Sweating: Attempts this with Hajime, questioning him about the Kuzuryu's or Hideki's possible involvement in the Student Council Killing Game. While none of the Kuzuryus were involved, Kyoko was right in thinking that Hideki was involved in it.

    Nagito Komaeda

Ultimate Lucky Student

  • Adaptational Heroism: He successfully kills Junko, so despite his weirdness, he saves millions or possibly billions of lives and thus never becomes a Remnant of Despair.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: His weird worldview of hope and despair is still intact and him thinking himself trash. Calling himself trash gets Hajime angrier at him as he's holding Nagito's neck, choking him for a short while in anger after Nagito endangered Chiaki, Hajime possibly thinking him calling himself trash as sarcasm.
  • Mythology Gag: He mentions that he thinks that he, Chiaki and Hajime would make quite the investigating team, and in Danganronpa 2, they are the most competent investigators and at finding the culprits in the trials.
  • Sympathetic Murderer: He shoots an unarmed girl twice in the chest, killing her. However, said girl is Junko Enoshima and in the original timeline is responsible for killing millions or billions of people.

Kuzuryu-gumi Members:

    In General

    Matsushige Kuzuryu

The current Oyabun(leader) of the Kuzuryu-gumi, the largest Yakuza syndicate in Japan. He's the father of Fuyuhiko and Natsumi.

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: In his Free Time Events in Danganronpa 2, Fuyuhiko mentions his father as being hot-headed and that his father and mother would get into huge fights. Throughout the story, he's shown to be level-headed and basically the Big Good of the series. This Series Continuity Error is deliberately invoked. He wasn't this way in the original timeline, but because his wife, Kaguya, was killed in the “Night of Retribution”, he's overall much more nice, and it also explains why Fuyuhiko is more alright with underage drinking, since either his father or his mother isn't The Alcoholic in this timeline.
  • Big Good: Could be seen as one for the trilogy. After Hajime saves his daughter's life, he asks Hajime to be Natsumi's bodyguard and has Peko start giving him training in self-defense, giving him a 150,000 Yennote  a month stipend for his work. He also pays off Hajime's tuition to Hope's Peak, as well. He also has Hajime go to the summit where it is announced that Natsumi is going to be put in an Arranged Marriage, correctly suspecting that Hajime would be a Spanner in the Works, since he had misgivings about putting his daughter in an arranged marriage. Part 3 shows that he was hoping that a normal guy from outside the Yakuza world would get together with his daughter, which is why he took such a shine to Hajime. Even after his death, he could be seen as helping, with the Antidote that she got from Satsuo from his Heroic Sacrifice, Natsumi is able to kill Eri before she could choke her out. His collar is also the one detonated to rescue Peko from being executed.
  • The Don: Is the Oyabun of the Kuzuryu-gumi.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Knowing he had an incurable lung disease, he chose to sacrifice himself in a Hope room, so that one of his kids could get an antidote. Satsuo gave it to Natsumi, and while it didn't cure her of the Obelisk agent as intended, it did save her life when she used it to kill Eri.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: He's killed by many spears piercing through him when he sacrifices himself in a Hope room.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: A true version! He was coming down with a lung disease. Apparently people in the Kuzuryu family tend to have lung issues, as his father died of lung issues, as well.
  • Named by the Adaptation: He wasn't named in the game, but was mentioned in Fuyuhiko's Free Time events.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: He participated in the "Night of Retribution" where many of the Kuzuryu's enemies ended up wiped out, when he had the option to not participate. He was the heir of the Kuzuryus at the time.

    Takuo
A high ranking member of the Kuzuryu-gumi, and the leader of the Western Enforcement branch of the syndicate.

  • Career-Ending Injury: His right arm is only partially useable after being pulverized by Funaki while with Hajime on a mission Gone Horribly Wrong, leaving him a "pencil pusher".
  • Handicapped Badass: After having his right hand and arm pulverized, he doesn't have full use of it, so has to rely on his wits more than pure strength and racks up 3 kills in the Killing Game against people that aren't handicapped in any way. He almost kills Hajime, but Hajime wasn't unarmed, to Takuo's surprise, and nearly disembowels him with a laser scalpel.
  • Off with His Head!: How Hajime is implied to finish him off.
  • Only One Name: Takuo is only ever referred to by his first name. Even after 3 months of working with him, Hajime never learns his last name. Hajime learns from Yudai that, like Peko, he was taken in by the Kuzuryus and raised since birth to be a Yakuza. Averted, in that Part 3 shows he was the son of Matsushige's older brother Daichi Kuzuryu and Maaya Umebayashi, making his name Takuo Kuzuryu and technically making him the rightful heir of the Kuzuryus.
  • Veteran Instructor: Is a high ranking Kuzuryu member and puts Hajime through his Training from Hell.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Hajime is only around 17 when he starts his training, so while he's not a child, he's still a high-schooler.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Tells Hajime this while Hajime is in Heroic BSoD after Hajime kills two Korean gangsters on a mission that went bad, which partially shakes him out of it.
Takuo: "Don't think you can go around with a chip on your shoulder, Hajime. Don't think that you can carry yourself like some kind of monster either. Because you're not. You haven’t earned that title. Understand?"

    Yudai Sagara
Matsushige's bodyguard.

    Satsuo Kuzuryu

Natsumi and Fuyuhiko's uncle and Matsushige's older brother. He's not technically a member of the Kuzuryu-gumi anymore, but remains close with his brother and niece and nephew.

  • Affably Evil: Maybe not evil, but he's a friendly guy who has killed quite a few people in his lifetime.
  • Cool Old Guy: Not too old, at 51, but he's a friendly affable guy.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Mortally wounds himself detonating a collar to rescue Peko from being executed.
Satsuo: “Oh come on… an old fart like me, outliving a sweet young thing like her? Now THAT’S a fuckin crime,"
  • Supreme Chef: Hajime is in ecstasy when he first tries Satsuo's food and Natsumi says that he runs a string of successful restaurants.
  • Taking the Heat: What got him exiled. He claimed he killed his brother's wife on the Night of Retribution, hiding that it was Matsushige himself.
  • The Unfavorite: His father and he never got along, which is why he was passed over for the position of Oyabun for his younger brother, even before he was exiled.
  • Yubitsume: Cut off half his pinky when he left the Kuzuryu-gumi.

    Kaguya Kuzuryu
Fuyuhiko and Natsumi's deceased mother. Her maiden name was Kaguya Akamatsu.
  • Death by Adaptation: In his Free Time Events in Danganronpa 2, Fuyuhiko says she's alive and gets in huge fights with his father, as well. She's been dead for 15 years in this timeline. This is because in the original timeline, Satsuo had his brother spare her life, whereas in this timeline, he doesn't do so.
  • Double Tap: Is on the receiving end of one from Matsushige.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Was unnamed but mentioned in Fuyuhiko's Free Time Events in Danganronpa 2.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: She tried to form an alliance to have the Kuzuryus wiped out, but instead the Kuzuryus raided the summit and killed most of their rivals' leadership, leaving the Kuzuryu-gumi the most powerful yakuza syndicate.
  • Posthumous Character: She's been dead for around 13 years from the start of the story and 15 from the end.
  • Separated at Birth: She sent one of her twin daughters to live with distant relatives. It is strongly implied and later confirmed by the author that this is Kaede Akamatsu.
  • Technicolor Eyes: She has purple eyes. Just like her daughter Kaede.
  • Would Hurt a Child: She tried to drown Fuyuhiko when he was four years old, which is why she and Matsushige are separated as of the "Night of Retribution".

Minamoto Clan:

    In General

    Hideki Minamoto
The young heir of the Minamoto clan.

  • Adaptational Dye-Job: An interesting case. He's depicted as having blue hair in the artwork in the story, but he's mentioned as having black hair in the story.
  • Affably Evil: Even after showing his true colors, he's nothing but polite to Hajime, even while beating him up and stabbing him.
  • Arranged Marriage: Is put in one at the beginning of Part 2 to Natsumi, to unite their clans.
  • Big Bad: Could be seen as the big bad of the trilogy, as he is responsible for a lot of what happens in the series. He kidnaps Natsumi with the strongly implied intent of he and/or his gang raping and then murdering her to start a Mob War between the Kuzuryus and Minamotos. Part 3's trial shows he's the mastermind behind the Killing Game.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He doesn't push himself on Natsumi in their Arranged Marriage and is generally pretty affable towards Hajime and everyone. When Hajime causes the marriage to fall apart, he magnanimously offers to take the fall for it. Then he has some of his thugs knock out Hajime and kidnap him and Natsumi, with the intent to start a clan war.
  • Didn't Think This Through: A bad habit of his that eventually gets him killed. In fact the only plan shown of his that goes off without a hitch is his double-cross of Junko.
  • Evil Versus Oblivion: What is likely his motive for betraying Junko. He's interested in fomenting a Mob War and becoming more powerful in the Yakuza world. She's interested in destroying the world and putting it in anarchy and despair, something that he wouldn't want. Ironically, through his double-cross, he saves millions or perhaps billions of people, despite being the Big Bad.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Peko kills him by stabbing him through the heart with a katana.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Manipulates Natsumi into agreeing to the Arranged Marriage by telling her about how Hajime will likely be killed in protecting her and "Maybe it’s time you actually started protecting him for a change" and get Hajime out of the picture.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Really, he should have written in a rule to not kill him into Peko's rules for the Killing Game. She unsurprisingly kills him the first chance she gets when she learns he's going to kill Fuyuhiko.
  • Underestimating Badassery: While he was right in thinking he was a better fighter than Hajime, him saying that "He's not a threat." is very wrong.
  • Undignified Death: After Peko kills him, she strings him up crucifixion-style next to the words "Usurper Prince", which is what he intended to do to Fuyuhiko.
  • Villainous Valor: After losing his fight against Hajime, he carries him with Natsumi's help to Hope's Peak hospital before Hajime could bleed out.
  • Walking Spoiler: As shown by almost every entry being at least partly covered by spoiler tags.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He doesn't personally hit Natsumi, but he's perfectly fine with having his thugs beat her.

    Eri Kusakari
The bodyguard of Hideki

    Shinta Masuichi
The current Oyabun of the Minamoto clan.

  • The Don: As the Oyabun of the Minamotos.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Zig-zagged. He listens to Hajime's concerns when most of the other attendees to the Kuzuryu-Minamoto summit to the announcement of the Arranged Marriage between Natsumi and Hideki Minamoto don't agree with Hajime. However, it's strongly implied and thought by Hajime, Peko and Fuyuhiko that he just went to a backup plan when he suggested a courtship period between Natsumi and Hideki. In Part 3, He asks Eri to sacrifice herself in a Despair room since he's the Oyabun and he would forgive her helping Hideki. She's still loyal to Hideki, however, and kills him, instead.
  • Threatening Shark: How he's killed, Eri pushes him into a pool of sharks.

    Maaya Umebayashi
The widow of the former Oyabun of the Minamotos, she controls the finances of the clan. She's the mother of Takuo with Daichi Kuzuryu, Matsushige's older brother.

  • Consummate Liar: About half of what she says is a lie.
  • Dragon Lady: Her aesthetic. She's a buxom older Femme Fatale with Yakuza tattoos.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: She's killed by Satsuo by him pushing her through a laser, cutting her in half at the waist.
  • Mrs. Robinson: She acts flirty towards Hajime, when he's 17-18 and she's in her 40s. Hajime thinks that she still has an impressive figure and was very attractive for her age.

    Tatsuji Hatoyama

  • Badass in a Nice Suit: Pretty easily defeats a post-training Hajime, despite being in his 40s and unassuming looking.
  • Torso with a View: How he meets his end: shotgun russian roulette to the chest.

    Genta Nagakura
The muscular head of security of the Minamotos.

  • The Big Guy: He's big and muscle-bound. Hajime says he's at least 6'6" tall and heavily muscled, which makes him about the size of Nekomaru.
  • Off with His Head!: Eri claims that he's ripped another person's head off before.
  • Slashed Throat: Takuo kills him by out-maneuvering him and wrapping razor-wire around his neck during their "tug-of-war". Takuo didn't have full use of his right hand and arm, so he had to win a different way, as he was no match strength-wise.
  • Would Not Hit a Girl: Peko starts in a Hope Room with him and he likely could have easily killed her due to his size advantage, but, as he says "I am not in the business of killing women or children."

Junko and Associates

    In General

    Junko Enoshima

Ultimate Fashionista/Ultimate Despair

  • Double Tap: Is on the receiving end of one when Nagito kills her.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: While Hideki is the main Big Bad of the story, Junko is the greater threat to the world as a whole.
  • Multiple Gunshot Death: It's possible that Nagito shot her more than twice, just to make sure. Part 2 says she was "riddled" with bullets and Part 3 says she had "several" gunshot wounds, both of which usually refer to more than two.
  • We Can Rule Together: Attempts a version of it with Nagito. It doesn't work.

    Mukuro Ikusaba

Ultimate Soldier

    Ryota Mitarai

Ultimate Animator

    Monokuma

    *Spoiler Character*
Izuru Kamukura

Ultimate Hope

  • Alternate Universe: They created this universe by having Hajime rescue Natsumi. The original universe was at "two minutes to midnight", so to speak, when Natsumi was murdered and her death sparked Hajime on the path to become Izuru and the End of the World as We Know It, but this Izuru prevents that, creating an alternate timeline.
  • Ambiguous Gender: They're always masked and use voice distortion, so while they're usually referred to as "he", they don't know what gender Izuru is.
  • For Science!: Basically why they created this universe was to test out a theory and "force the hand of God" in ensuring that Hajime, Natsumi, Fuyuhiko, Peko and Satsuo all survive the Killing Game.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Builds machines capable of sending data through time, which is how this Danganranpa universe was created.
  • Irony: They point out that they are unable to use their own technology and they can "see all and influence nothing".
  • Malevolent Masked Man: Maybe not malevolent as they're described as being a True Neutral by the author, but in the Killing Game, they wear a Monokuma mask at all times, except when they reveal their face to a dying Satsuo.
  • No Name Given: Well, the main characters do know their name as Izuru Kamukura, but who became Izuru in this timeline is left unexplained, though the author states that there are hints of who they are.
  • Stable Time Loop: Creates one by forcing it to happen in the first place.
  • Winds of Destiny, Change!: They "force the hand of God" into creating this timeline by having Hajime rescue Natsumi and a few other changes to create a Stable Time Loop so that the world can exist in the timeline first place.
