Zane Grimm
Our hero, a young mage skilled in combat magic.- After Action Patch Up: With Sarah after the fight with the Jorogumo. Doubles as Ship Tease.
- Badass Boast: Just before his sparring match in the guild hall, he tells David that he won't need five minutes to win, he'll only need five moves.
- Zane: I was wrong. It only took me four.
- Berserk Button: Threatening or insulting his friends is not going to end well for you.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Zane's a nice guy, but you do not want to piss him off. Just ask David. Or Izanami.
- Blood Magic: The magic that binds Zane to the Vault literally runs through his blood.
- Blow You Away: Able to create and control wind.
- Blue Is Heroic: Zane's magic tends to be blue in color.
- Bully Hunter: Says the only reason he'd never gone after David for bullying Jason was because Jason had asked him not to.

- Dangerous 16th Birthday: Narrowly averted when the main plot begins the day after Zane turns 16.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Some of the things Zane has been through are seriously messed-up.

- Good Is Not Soft: As David learned the hard way, Jason was too nice and forgiving to fight back against his bullying. Zane wasn't.

- Heroes Prefer Swords: Zane doesn't always use a weapon in combat, but when he does, the Totsuka sword is his go-to weapon.
- Heroic Build: Gained from years of physical training and swimming. Closer to a swimmer than a bodybuilder.
- It Runs in the Family: Based on what Nick says, Zane inherited his love of loopholes from his parents.
- Let's Get Dangerous!: When we first meet Zane, he doesn't seem all that impressive, just a boy with messy hair and poor punctuality. Then we see him fight.
- Lightning Bruiser: Zane has impressive speed, and his attacks pack a serious punch. Becomes literal during his fight with Orochi.
- Making a Splash: Zane is a powerful water magic user. With a focus on concussive force, these spells can end a fight in a hurry.
- Messy Hair: Even with magic, it seems to be impossible for Zane to get his hair under control.
- Named After Somebody Famous: The Brothers Grimm
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Opening the urn he found in the Vault would cause problems for years to come.
- One-Man Army: After he gains Susanoo's powers, he defeats Orochi by himself.
- Parental Abandonment: Sort of. It's complicated.
- Pop-Cultured Badass: A self-described Trekkie, Zane makes multiple pop culture references, including Doctor Who, Predator, and The Hunger Games. He also apparently quotes Gandalf enough that his friends can predict when it's going to happen.
- Power-Strain Blackout: After using his newly awakened powers to defeat Orochi, he passes out from overusing his powers.
- Shaping Your Attacks: Has several spells that shape water into different shapes, most often a Threatening Shark.

- Took a Level in Badass: Zane was already powerful, but after he awakens his God Soul powers, he's able to singlehandedly take down an opponent that had been overpowering his entire team just minutes before.
- Tranquil Fury: When he thinks Orochi has killed Jason, Zane doesn't scream or even raise his voice. He simply proceeds to take Orochi down with brutal efficiency.
- Victor Gains Loser's Powers: The Totsuka sword can do this, gaining additional powers throughout the story.
Jason Stark
Zane's best friend, a werewolf skilled in ice magic.- Ambiguously Gay: When the jorogumo uses an ability that makes most of the boys and some of the girls around her attracted to her, Jason is completely unaffected. The fact that Zane, who is bisexual, was affected, seems to support this.
- And that's completely overlooking almost every interaction Jason has with Zane.
- Battle Aura: Gains a red one when using Berserker Soul.
- The Berserker: Has a spell that turns him into one.
- Berserk Button: Threatening Zane is guaranteed to set him off.
- Big Damn Heroes: Saves Zane from the jorogumo with brutal efficiency.
- Dangerous Forbidden Technique: The Berserker Soul spell. It gives Jason a major power boost, but when it runs out, he'll be so exhausted that he can barely stand, let alone defend himself.
- Disney Death: Seemingly killed by Orochi, but survives thanks to Sarah.
- Expressive Ears: Jason's ears sometimes reflect his mood, similar to real-life canines.
- Fantastic Racism: On the receiving end of this from David.
- Glamour: Uses one to appear human.
- Good Is Not Soft: Jason is a sweet, caring guy. Not that that helped the jorogumo.
- Half-Human Hybrid: His father is a werewolf, and his mother is human.
- An Ice Person: Jason is extremely skilled in using magic to create and control ice and cold.

An Amazon and powerful fire magic user.- Action Girl: Everyone in the guild seems afraid to spar with Kora. When she faces off with the Oni, we see why.
- Amazonian Beauty: Kora is a literal Amazon, and is absolutely gorgeous.
- Blood Knight: Kora loves a good fight, though she sometimes goes a bit overboard.
- Breath Weapon: One of her most powerful spells lets her do this.
- Elemental Punch: Likes to combine her fire magic with physical combat.
- Everyone Loves Blondes: Noted to be one of the most attractive girls in town.
- Full-Contact Magic: Fights by combining her Super-Strength and her power over fire.
- Leg Focus: One of the first things Zane notices about her is her legs.
- Muscles Are Meaningless: Even with her physique, Kora's physical strength is much higher than it should be.
- Playing with Fire: Her Fire Dragon Magic gives her access to powerful fire spells.
- Sleeves Are for Wimps: Likes to wear clothes that show off her arms.
- Tomboyish Ponytail: Her typical hairstyle.
- Underestimating Badassery: One of the oni thought she would make an easy target. A decision he came to regret, but luckily for him, he didn't have to regret it for very long once she laid into him.
Sarah Blackstone
One of Zane's closest friends, a bookworm with a talent for plant-based magic.- Action Girl: Think you can take her in a fight? So did the Oni. It didn't end well.
- Always Someone Better: Zane sees her this way when it comes to her control over her magic.
- Astral Projection: Uses this to run down an oni with a truck without the risking her physical body.
- Badass Bookworm: Recited Hamlet from memory in the 5th grade, enjoys [1], and ran down an Oni in a truck.
- Beware the Nice Ones: One of the nicest characters we've seen so far. Piss her off at your own risk.
- Braids of Action: Wears her hair in a loose braid that doubles as a Motherly Side Plait.
- Brainy Brunette: Recited Hamlet from memory. In the 5th grade.
- Combat Pragmatist: Sarah seems to have no problem doing what it takes to win a fight.
- When magic doesn't seem to be working against the oni, she goes with plan B: running him down with a truck.
- He gets off easy compared to what she did to the other oni. You know what's worse than being hit with a Groin Attack? When that attack is magically enhanced poison ivy.

A kitsune archer.- Glamour: Uses one to appear human.
- Playing with Fire: His fox-fire spells.
- Splitting the Arrow: Does this during his archery demonstration.
- Squee: Has this reaction in the Vault when he finds Robin Hood's bow.
Miroku Kobayashi
A Karasu Tengu mage sent to by the goddess Amaterasu to help Zane with his first assignment.- Bird People: Specifically, a crow.
- Clever Crows
- Dark Is Not Evil: Much of his magic seen so far has a darkness theme, but Miroku is an all around nice guy.
- Technicolor Magic: Miroku's magic is purple in color.
- Tengu: Specifically, a Karasu Tengu.
Dante
Zane's canine familiar.- Action Pet: A spirit hound of ridiculous size, Dante won't hesitate to step in if he feels Zane is in danger.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Dante may behave like a big, furry goofball, but he is more than capable of holding his own in a fight.
- Big Friendly Dog: Loving, playful, and big enough to be referred to as dog-zilla.
- Canine Companion: To Zane.
- Evil-Detecting Dog
- Gentle Giant: Dante's size and power make him a serious threat to anybody that tries to harm Zane or his friends. Most of the time, though, he acts like an overgrown puppy.

- Big Bad: Of Rise of the Yokai.
- Blood Magic: Uses this to protect herself from being trap inside the magic urn a second time, allowing her to break free and destroy it.
- Body Snatcher: Needs a host body to function in the mortal world. As the goddess of death, the body doesn't need to be alive for this to work.
- Crazy-Prepared: Knowing that Zane will likely try to trap her in the urn again, she takes steps to avoid this by using some of his blood in the ritual to create her new vessel, extending his protection against items from the Vault to herself.
- Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: It's unclear if Izanami herself looks this way, but her host body certainly does.
- Scaled Up: When Orochi becomes her vessel. It doesn't help.
- Sealed Evil in a Can: At least until Zane sets her free.
- Summoning Ritual: Uses one to revive Orochi.

- Spectacular Spinning: Can curl up and use it's razor-sharp fur to attack.
Jorogumo
- Arachnid Appearance and Attire: Dresses in all black with hints of red and white.
- All Guys Want Cheerleaders: Uses this to lure in her victims.
- All Webbed Up: Makes liberal use of this in combat for both attack and defense.
- Extra Eyes: In her true form, she has eight (at first, anyway).
- Eye Scream: Has two of her eyes gauged out by Jason.
- Giant Spider: Emphasis on giant.

- Glamour: Used to disguise herself as a cheerleader. It's a major step up from what she really looks like.

- No-Sell: Unless you are Zane or Susanoo, nothing you throw at him will even slow him down.
