Unchained Lightning is an upcoming original story made by one of our own Tropers, TheHailStormer. Set in a future where the world has nearly been conquered by a dictator named Nicholas Fidel and his GEIST (Global Enforcement Infantry Strike Troopers) forces, this is the tale of two cyborg lovers, fighting to survive together and reclaim their freedom in a world at war. But with GEIST's forces on the move, one man's desire for vengeance growing, and more sinister machinations at work in the shadows, that will not be an easy task. The stakes are high, surrender is not an option, and blood will be spilled.

Originally a Darker and Edgier reboot of the Sonic the Hedgehog series called Sonic Unchained, it was converted into an original series in December 2014 after one of the original creators behind the ideas for the project resigned. All chapters of this story will be posted on TheHailStormer's DeviantArt account once he makes them.

This series contains examples of:

  • Alien Invasion: The Gravitus invasion. They do have a partially well-intentioned reason to, however.
  • Anyone Can Die: No one is safe here, and all deaths are final.
  • Arc Villain: Fidel for Arc 1, Dr Thorne initially for Arc 2, who gets usurped by Eins, The Gravitus for Arc 3, Thorne again for Arc 5, and Infernus for Arc 6.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Infernus is banished back to dormancy for a million years, but Stormer and Chiharu sacrifice their lives in the process letting their grown children live on with their families. While most of Earth is in ruins, life will rebuild itself.
  • Breather Episode: Arc 4, where Stormer and Chiharu raise their children and live a peaceful life.
  • Canon Welding: With Diamond Phase, after the events of MUGEN Clash Of Universes. Calia/Amber and Stormer/Chiharu periodically visit each other via interdimensional travel after making friends during the tournament.
  • Cool Airship: Both Dr. Thorne's flagship, The Gambit's Revenge, and Jack Fortuna's personal ship, The Free Joker.
  • Darker and Edgier: Than Sonic Unchained, its former incarnation.
  • Doomed Hometown: During Operation Sabretooth, GEIST decides to make an example of the rebels by ordering an orbital bombing on New Orleans, killing everybody there (including Stormer's family) except for Stormer and Chiharu.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After the first few arcs. Stormer and Chiharu go through lots of hardship before they finally get their peace, settle down, and have kids. And even then, their peace doesn't last long.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Stormer and Chiharu share one with Calia and Amber from Diamond Phase after the events of MUGEN Clash Of Universes. The latter two are around 88 human years.
  • Shout-Out: Several of Astro Systems's employees have initials similar to that of other tropers whom the creator is friends with.
    • Dr. Raleigh Airlights is named after Raleigh Becket from Pacific Rim and Deltadromeus' former username Delta Airlights.
  • Thrown Out the Airlock: Fidel's eventual fate, after being stabbed by Stormer and Chiharu.
  • Wonder Child: Lightning and Iris are a downplayed Sci-fi version of this. Since Stormer and Chiharu were unable to have kids as cyborgs, they opted for Chiharu to get an artificial womb to give birth, a risky process with a high chance of failure or defects. The process worked perfectly and the twins' birth was considered a miracle.
  • World of Badass: Pretty much every major character is able to kick ass (or is in-training to kick ass).

    Themes Present in This Work: 
  • The Four Loves: The Aurion family displays all four of them in various aspects of their lives:
    • Storge (Affection/Family) - The strong family bond that the Aurions have with each other.
    • Philia (Friendship) - Stormer and Chiharu's interdimensional friendship with the Gifted of Terra 102.
    • Eros (Romance) - Stormer and Chiharu's deep love for each other, as well as their children's love with their own future spouces.
    • Agape (Unconditional Love) - The love from Stormer and Chiharu to Lightning and Iris, like all parents to their children.
  • The Power of Love: Stormer and Chiharu's relationship is a central part of the story, and one of the primary lessons taught is that true love can triumph over any challenge.

The Aurion Family and Friends:

"I am the lightning of justice. For a brighter tomorrow, I will fight til I scream my last breath!"
One of the two main heroes, a 23-year old cyborg samurai who works for Dr. Asmodeus Thorne against the evil armies of GEIST (Global Enforcement Infantry Strike Troopers). He's got a strong sense of honor and justice, and will not harm any children or innocents under any circumstance. Driven to avenge his fallen militia group and his home city of New Orleans, he and his girlfriend Chiharu will not stop until the dictatorship of Nicolas Fidel is no more. Additional Tropes Pertaining to Stormer from Arc 2-Onward:

  • Action Dad: If his kids are kidnapped, he won't hesitate to dust off his weapons and rescue them.
  • Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: His final fate after he makes the ultimate sacrifice with Chiharu to stop Infernus and save the world. Both of them become one with an infinite source of energy, are transformed into Energy Beings, and live out the rest of eternity in peace together.
  • Dad the Veteran: Obviously, given that he's retired from active combat duty to raise a family.
  • Happily Married: To Chiharu.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Goes Super with Chiharu to save Earth from Infernus, at the cost of his own life.
  • The Mentor: Becomes a mentor to his son Lightning, teaching him his fighting style and the way of the samurai.
  • Older and Wiser: He's mellowed out a little bit since the series ended, and is much more knowledgable about the world.
  • Retired Badass: He retired from active combat duty at the end of Arc 3.
  • So Proud of You: He and Chiharu say this to their fully-grown children before their Heroic Sacrifice.
  • The Watcher: What he and Chiharu become after they pass on.
  • Twerp Sweating: What he does to any potential suitors for his daughter Iris when she starts dating.

    Chiharu Yamamoto

Stormer's 22-year old girlfriend who hails from Tokyo, Japan. She's a expert at programming and engineering, just under Dr. Asmodeus Thorne in terms of sheer technical skill. She's a bit shy and introverted due to losing her parents at a young age, though, but loves Stormer as much as he loves her. Like him, she was also forced to become a cyborg since she and Stormer were the only survivors of the attack on New Orleans.   • Action Girl: Fights right alongside Stormer against GEIST's troops.
  • Asian and Nerdy: Is from Japan, and loves working with technology.
  • Author Avatar: Chiharu is based off of the creator's late girlfriend of the same name.
  • Barbie Doll Anatomy: Has this from her artificial skin, due to her cybernetic body.
  • Barrier Warrior: Her primary combat style.
  • Battle Couple: Right alongside her love, Stormer. The two use their combined strengths to make a near unbeatable team.
  • Beehive Barrier: Her Barrier Generator produces one of these.
  • Cherry Blossoms: Chiharu's primary motif. She also uses holographic versions of its petals to confuse enemies.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Chiharu had met up with Stormer when both of them were teenagers..
  • Code of Honour: Chiharu was raised by her grandfather Yoshimitsu to have one. Her sense of honor convinces her to leave Dr. Robotnik after he goes off the deep end.
  • Combat and Support: Is the support to Stormer's combat.
  • Combination Attack: With Stormer around, she can perform Twin Slasher, Electro Dynamite and Dual Whirlwind alongside him.
  • Confusion Fu: Uses trickery and deception to take out foes.
  • Cyborg: Just like Stormer.
  • Defector from Decadence: Ends up escaping from Dr. Thorne after he's driven insane.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: She and Stormer, after all the hell they go through throughout the series, will eventually settle down, get married, and have kids.
  • Enhanced Archaic Weapon: She wields a katana that is able to create solid and intangible holographic petals.
  • Emergency Transformation: Was made into a cyborg after she was found at the brink of death from an orbital missile strike.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Her skills are named after flowers in Japanese.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: She added the holographic petals feature to her weapon all on her own.
  • Hard Light: Her sword's holographic petals run on this. They can be made either solid or phase through, depending on what the situation calls for.
  • Hidden Weapons: Her sword, Kusanagi no Sakura is a katana hidden inside a Japanese umbrella.
  • I Know Karate: And Kung Fu.
  • Immortality Begins at 22: Will still look 22 years old physically due to her enhancements.
  • Kimono Is Traditional: She wears a black kimono-like jacket patterned with flowers.
  • Lady of War: Still retains a bit of elegance, even when fighting endless hordes of soldiers.
  • Leitmotif: Her's is Future World.
  • Mama Bear: When she eventually has kids, she and Stormer will personally dust off their weapons and go rescue their kids if they are ever kidnapped.
  • Mix-and-Match Weapon: Kusanagi no Sakura, which is a katana hidden inside of a Japanese umbrella with a barrier generator installed in it.
  • Mundane Utility: Besides using Kusanagi no Sakura as an umbrella for a rainy day, she can also create Hard Light constructs that can help with daily life. It's slightly awkward as she has to draw her weapon.
  • Named Weapons: Kusanagi no Sakura.
  • Never Hurt an Innocent: Hurting innocent civilians is out of the question. It helps keep her moral compass intact when the Doctor goes crazy.
  • Nice Girl: She's very sweet and kind to most people.
  • Official Couple: With Stormer, obviously.
  • Parasol of Prettiness / Parasol of Pain: Kusanagi no Sakura is partially one.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her parents died in a car crash when she was 5 years old.
  • Petal Power: She's able to summon holographic petals, which can be used for both attack and defense.
  • Playful Hacker: Likes to hack into GEIST's systems and screw them over.
  • Pro-Human Transhuman: Despite being made into a cyborg, Chiharu firmly stays on the side of justice without abusing the powers given to her by her new body.
  • Proper Lady: Chiharu was raised to be this way by her grandfather.
  • Red Baron: The Digital Blossom.
  • Shrinking Violet: Her personality.
  • Shout-Out: Her weapon partially is one to Setsuka of Soul Series fame.
    • Her family members are named after a few of the real Chiharu's favorite fighting game characters from Rival Schools and Tekken.
    • Her nickname, Chii, is taken directly from the character of the same name from Chobits. The real Chiharu liked to occasionally RP as the character, and often preferred just to be called Chii for short.
  • Stone Wall: Subverted; she's still got some speed, but her defense is higher than Stormer's and she's not as powerful as him.
  • The Ageless: Has stopped physically aging due to her cybernetics.
  • Tornado Move: Rose Tornado, a powerful attack where she uses her katana to generate a tornado of holographic petals. It's her strongest move but leaves her drained after the attack.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Stormer and Chiharu brought Dr. Thorne a strange red gem that they found on a mission, and due to the gem's corruption of the Doctor, they were indirectly responsible for him turning into an evil madman and nuking Moscow.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Yep, abit one who loves technology.
  • We Can Rebuild Her / Unwilling Roboticization: Stormer and Chiharu nearly died from an orbital missile strike, but they were saved by Dr. Thorne and were converted into cyborgs to save their lives.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Chiharu is also haunted by this age-old question since her conversion into a cyborg, but it doesn't affect her as much as it does Stormer.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: She would never do such a thing, which helps her and Stormer decide to escape from the Doctor's flagship after he goes insane.
  • Wrench Wench: She loves working with mechanical things.

     Tropes pertaining to both Stormer and Chiharu 
  • Badass Family: When their children grow up, Stormer and Chiharu would train them to fight. When the whole family is together, they'd be able to do an attack even more powerful than Dual Whirlwind: Aurion Hurricane, a ginormous tornado made of all their attacks!
  • Good Parents: To their children. Both Stormer and Chiharu raise their kids with love and care, while also giving the right amount of discipline so as not to spoil them.
  • Together in Death: Both Stormer and Chiharu pass away together as a result of their Heroic Sacrifice.

Stormer and Chiharu's young son, a mixed Causasian and Asian child. He looks up to his parents with unending desire to live up to their heroics, and become just as heroic as they are when he grows up.
  • Badass Adorable: He learns how to fight since 9, and gets the hang of it at 12.
  • Badass Normal: He doesn't have powers or enhancements unlike the Beastials or cyborgs and is still able to kick major ass with his sword skills.
  • Berserk Button: Insulting his parents in front of him-they're his role models, and he won't like it when they're insulted.
  • But Not Too Foreign: He's a half-American, half-Japanese who grows up in Japan.
  • Cheerful Child: Stormer and Chiharu made sure he'd grow up to be a happy little boy.
  • Combat and Support: Like his father, he's the combat to Iris' support.
  • Combat Pragmatist: His fighting style as an adult compared to his father.
  • Designer Babies: He and his sister were born this way, as there was no other possible way for Stormer and Chiharu to have a child.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: He eventually gets Powered Armor that lets him keep up with his parents in battle.
  • Happily Married: He eventually marries a Japanese wife named Akane after he grows up.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Like his father, Lightning uses a sword, although only one instead of two. He eventually inherits his father's Raijin MKIII after Stormer dies.
  • Great Detective: He grows up to become a competent detective.
  • Kid Samurai: He learns his father's swordfighting techniques and honor as a child.
  • Leitmotif: Chemical Star by Cytus, shared with his sister.
  • Picky Eater: As a child, he doesn't like vegetables.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: He has a blue stripe in his hair and he's the male twin.
  • Sweet Tooth: He loves sweet foods as a child.
  • Twin Telepathy: Has this with his twin sister Iris, due to the unusual way they were conceived. It works as long as they are within distance of around Tokyo's size.

  • Attack Drone: Her weapon of choice as an adult. It's actually her stuffed rabbit modified into a floating weapon.
  • Badass Adorable: She learns how to fight since 9, and gets the hang of it at 12.
  • Badass Normal: She doesn't have powers or enhancements unlike the Beastials or cyborgs and is still able to kick major ass with her attack drone.
  • Berserk Button: Insulting her parents in front of her-they're her role models, and she won't like it when they're insulted.
    • Calling her a doll due to her cute looks and coloured hair.
    • Touching her stuffed rabbit doll without her permission.
  • But Not Too Foreign: She's a half-American, half-Japanese who grows up in Japan.

  • Invisibility Cloak: Her Powered Armor has an invisibility mode. It's a Shout-Out towards her Beacon RP counterpart, who has invisibility as a power.
  • Leitmotif: Chemical Star by Cytus, shared with herbrother.
  • Meaningful Name: She's named after Iris, the goddess of Rainbows. She grows up to be an artist who is skilled at painting with the colours of the rainbow. She's also named after a purple flower, and has natural purple hair. Finally, Iris can also refer to part of the eye, and she's very skilled at visual arts.
  • Mundane Utility: Usagi can not only be used for combat, it can also be used to perform various daily tasks like painting.
  • Picky Eater: As a child, she doesn't like vegetables either.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: She has a purple stripe in her hair and she's the female twin.
  • Rainbow Motif: Her attack drone has attacks based on the colours of the rainbow:
    • Red: Fires two red tendril-like beams that lock on to a target, but deal weak damage.
    • Orange: Fires energy that travels across walls and floors to her target.
    • Yellow: Fires a yellow beam that heals her target.
    • Green: Fires a large green laser blast.
    • Blue: Fires 3 blue laser shots in a spread that reflect off walls.
    • Purple: Fires a normal-sized purple beam in a corkscrew shape.
  • Sweet Tooth: She loves sweet foods as a child.
  • Shout-Out: Her attack drone has attacks based on the weapons from Xevious 3D/G and R-Type.
  • Twin Telepathy: Has this with her twin brother Lightning, due to the unusual way they were conceived. It works as long as they are within distance of around Tokyo's size.

    General Tropes 
  • Alien Blood: They have dark purple blood that is otherwise similar to human blood.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: They're easily burned by Chlorine, have scales on their body, give out more heat than humans, start out as larvae, etc...
  • Gravity Master: They can manipulate gravity with their limbs, in a manner like telekenesis.
  • Green-Skinned Space Babe: The female Gravitus resemble humans, except with purple limbs and fins/tentacles on their head.
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: Males are physically stronger and develop arm-blades, while females are better at gravity manipulation.
  • Hive Queen: She's needed for the females to reproduce.
  • Meaningful Name: They're Gravity Masters.
  • Nobody Poops: Justified. They don't need to poop as their internal heat incinerates any waste products inside them.

An infamous bounty hunter, known as "The Jack of Spades" in the criminal underworld. He gets hired by GEIST in their desparate attempts to stop Stormer and Chiharu, and becomes a reoccurring antagonist for the duo for the rest of their lives.
  • Abusive Parents: His father was a drunkard who often beat both Jack and his mother.
  • Bounty Hunter: He hunts others for the good pay. This is how he ends up joining GEIST and Dr. Thorne.
  • Cold Sniper: Cares little for the lives of any who get in the way of his kills.
  • Death Dealer: His weapon is a gun that runs on playing cards.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Stormer.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Is turned into one by Infernus after it awakens.
  • Killed Off for Real: He and Lizzie (transformed by Infernus) are destroyed by the Aurions during the final faceoff.
  • Lack of Empathy: He doesn't care about the feelings of others.
  • Meaningful Name: Jack (as in the card Jack) and Fortuna (meaning fortune, reflecting his desire to gain wealth and power).
  • The Gunslinger: Wields a gun as his primary weapon.
  • The Rival: Serves as Stormer's primary rival and foil.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Best seen when he and Lizzie kidnap Lightning and Iris when the kids are 9.

    Elizabeth "Lizzie" McQueen

"Blood...pain...it excites me! Ahahahahahaha!"
A feared serial killer/rapist from the London underground that is feared for her brutal murders and high kill count. She is violently unstable and insane, and begins hunting down the heroes after seeing them on a mission.

    Infernus 
  • The Corrupter: Is able to give psionic suggestion to people to tell them to do bad things. This is how he gets hitmen to murder Fidel's wife, get Fidel's troops to fire on innocents, and later turn Fidel into a fascist dictator.
  • Emotion Eater: He eats negative emotions. He thus corrupted Fidel and Thorne so that their horrible deeds would cause much despair and sadness that he could feed on.
  • Expy: Of Dark Gaia.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: He was once an ancient researcher who studied the power of the Eternal Flame. Then he got used it on himself to gain power.
  • The Man Behind the Man: Infernus was behind all the troubles that hit the world. He orchestrated Fidel's change into an evil dictator, and was behind the corruption of Dr Thorne. The negative emotions all this caused allowed him to feed and grow strong enough to awaken.
