    Genshi Tenson

Genshi Tenson

Paopei: Houshindai, Hiraii, Bankohan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/genshitenson.png
Voiced By: Tamio Ohki (1999 Anime, PS1 Game), Eizo Tsuda (2018 Anime)
Voiced in English By: Charlie Campbell
Voiced in Latin American Spanish By: Alfonso Ramirez

The supreme master of the Kongrong Mountains and one of the Three Great Sennins, Genshi Tenson is Taikobo and the Twelve Sennin's teacher. On top of being an incredibly old and powerful sennin, he is also very secretive and seemingly has a habit of manipulating people and events from the shadows. Later in the story, it is revealed that he was part of and supporting the secret plan to free the world from Joka's influence. Although he despairs over Taikobou's laziness, he seems to truly care about him and his other disciples.

  • Badass Teacher: Do not let his appearance fool you, he is one of the most powerful beings alive.
  • Eccentric Mentor: He certainly has a quirky and unusual way of dealing with Taikobou. His eccentricity is revealed to have been a cover, as it was very important not to alert Joka about the master plan cooked up by Fukki.
  • Good Is Not Nice: The Reveal paints him as a petty and ruthless man who'll stop at nothing to get revenge. In the Anime, he's the Man Behind the Man to Dakki, but he's obeying the personifications of time.
  • Gravity Master: His super Paopei Bankohan (Banner of Pangu) is a black sphere which can increase gravity in an area, with deadly results.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: In the end, as Ohtenkun reveals, Genshi did his fair deal of bad things and treachery for the greater good, though he does show remorse as he lets Ohtenkun whale on him with a [1], claiming that he deserves it.
  • Hypocrite: Upon finding out that his entire existance was a result of Joka's manipulations, he's dead set on making her pay for this and destroy her completely. He achieves this goal... through a series of vast and hidden manipulations of his own.
  • Kick the Dog: In hindsight, the way he treated Tsuten Kyoshu is this: Tsuten warned him about Dakki and went so far as to offer his own child as an hostage for the peace agreement between Kingo and Konron. Genshi however never really trusted him out of sheer egotism, kept the most of the bargain in the agreement by giving Tsuten half of Oh Eki and said half Oh Eki was further defiled by Dakki and used to turn Tsuten Kyoshu insane.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Delivers one to Bunchu and his obsession for the Yin when they fight.
  • Retired Badass: Loses his legs in the fight against Bunchu and is forced to leave Bankohan to Ryukitstu.
  • Third Eye: Has one in his forehead, which gives him the power of claivoyance.

    Nento Dojin

Nento Dojin

Paopei: Hienken, Bankohan

Voiced in English By: Orion Pitts

An ardent lover of justice and truth, Nento used to be the leader of the Juunisen and Konron's most powerful Sennin, able to use Jutsu with such skills he barely needs using Paopei at all. However, he had an argument with Genshi Tenson which lead to a fight between the two. Ultimately, Genshi cast Nento from the mountain and ordered the others to forget him. In truth, it was all part of the plan to fool Joka and prepare him to take on the Signpost of History. He lands on Horai Island and joins the heroes in the final battle and becomes the leader of the Human Sennin on Horai Island.

  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: When he first meet the heroes, he wastes no time in telling them that most of them are too weak to fight and should stay away. When they protest, he defeats them all without breaking a sweat.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: He was the leader of the Juunisen, and the strongest Sennin of Konron.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Dakki sics on him three monsters with powers on the level of the Juunisen. He wipes them out with his sheer Fire Jutsu alone.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: Red, flame-like hair for the fire-user burning with passion.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Long ago, he disagreed with Genshi Tenson's methods and fought him for three days across the heights of Mount Konron. A staged fight in truth, to fake Nento's death so that he could control Jyoka from the shadows.
  • Faking the Dead: As part of Genshi Tenson's gambit to fool Jyoka.
  • Flaming Sword: Hienken (Flying Flame Sword) is his only, often redundant Paopei, though unlike most examples (since, like the previously seen Seiunken, is essentially a flat pointy picket covered in holes), the flames erumpt even from the handle. He later merges it with Bankohan, making it a Flaming Gravitational Sword.
  • Flight: He can flight freely and usually float above the ground.
  • For Great Justice: His main motivation, he fights relentless for justice and undertook Genshi's plan for this reason.
  • Healing Hands: He can use his jutsu to heal people.
  • Playing with Fire: Not only he has a fire-manipulating Paopei, he can summon veritable firestorms unaided by Paopei.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: With his beloved half-sister, Ryukitsu Koshu: She is the Sennyo of Water and has a calm and collected personality, while he is a Fiery Redhead who literally has fire as his paopei and is quite impulsive and hot-headed.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Calls Oh Eki out on the fact that his plan to stop Jyoka involved letting her destroy the Earth enough times to weaken herself.

    Ryuukitsu Koshu

Ryuukitsu Koushu

Paopei: Kenkon Muromo, Bankohan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryukitsu_koshu.png
Voiced in English By: Trina Nishimura

The stunningly beautiful daughter of two sennins, Ryuukitsu Koushu has the distinction of having been born a sennin, rendering any training as a doushi unnecessary. The chances of conceiving a pure-blooded sennin like her are incredibly low, which makes her very special. Thanks to her blood purity, she is one of the most powerful sennins in the Konron Mountains, with strength to rival Dakki's, and she possesses abilities like being able to float without a paopei. On the downside, the polluted air of the human world is like poison to her, and she needs the pure atmosphere of the sennin world to be able to breathe properly. For this reason, she rarely leaves her home unless she has good reason to. She is adored by her younger half-brother Nentou Doujin, and loved by her two disciples Sekiun and Hekiun.

Ryuukitsu is called the Sennyo of Water because she wields a water paopei with defensive and offensive abilities. A thin layer of water always surrounds her, protecting her of any attacks. She is a kind-hearted, gentle and graceful woman and a pacifist who hates taking lives and will usually give her enemies a chance to surrender. After Taikobou and his friends save Hekiun, she gets involved in his quest out of gratitude and even remains for a while in the human world, in spite of the crippling pain she endured from breathing the impure air. During the sennin war, Ryukitsuu was the one who propelled the entire Konron Mountain forward using her immense energy resources.

  • Action Girl: Don't be deceived by her demure and polite personality. She will floor most doushi and sennins within minutes, and has the power to move an entire mountain on her own.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She may be an angelically beautiful, unfailingly polite young woman with a strong an aversion to killing, but don't ignore her warnings or you will be in for a world of pain. Just ask Ryukan.
  • Dude Magnet: Her beauty is renowed throughout the sennin world, and some people like Doukoson specifically seek her out to witness her stunning good looks for themselves.
  • Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: Takes out Ryukan's fire paopei with extreme ease because her paopei is based on water.
  • Foil: The Proper Lady Ryuukitsu Koushu (Light Feminine) is this for Dakki (Dark Feminine). Both are famous, long haired and very powerful beauties and both have sisterly bonds with two female apprentices. They fight on opposing sides and are the strongest women on their teams. Interestingly enough, they never come face to face.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: She wears a long purple cape fringed with lace.
  • Negated Moment of Awesome: Before she can actually join the others in their final attack on Joka, her illness kicks in at the worst time, forcing Nento to bring her back to Konron 2 and use her Super Paopei instead.
  • No-Sell: Thanks to her Kenkon Muromo (Universal Net of Mist and Frost), she has an invisible water barrier shielding her from all harm.
  • Not Afraid to Die: She's ready to join the final battle knowing very well that, outside of a Sennin World, she won't last long anyway.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: With her half-brother Nentou Doujin. She is the Sennyo of Water and has a calm and collected personality, while he is a Fiery Redhead who literally has fire as his paopei and is quite impulsive and hot-headed.
  • Too Important to Walk: She floats everywhere she goes most of the time.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Her reputation usually precedes her, but those who make the mistake of underestimating her because of her gender and her calm appearance will find themselves in quite a bit of pain. Her warnings are never in vain.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: After suffering a fit of bloody cough and being carried back to Konron 2 by her brother, she doesn't reapper nor is mentioned except for a quick gag in which Bukichi and Supushan attach a pipe to her water barrier to put off the flames of the final battle. Implicitly she had little time to live, but since now everyone live in a special Sennin Wolrd it's not known if she can survive there too.
  • World's Most Beautiful Woman: The doushi and sennin of Konron Mountain consider her to be this, just as the youkai of Kingo Islands consider Dakki to be the one who deserves that title.

    The Juunisen

Taiitsu Shinjin

Paopei: Kuryuu Shinkato, Kasenso, Kinsen

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/taiitsu_shinjin.png
Voiced By: Daisuke Sakaguchi (1999 Anime, PS1 Game), Daisuke Hirakawa (2018 Anime)
Voiced in English By: Matt Shipman

One of the most eccentric of the twelve great sennin, Taiitsu is Konron's resident paopei expert and the closest thing they have to a scientist. He is fond of technology and likes to invent things (especially paopei) and is responsible for the creation (and upgrade) of Nataku. He is generally shown to be ethical in his experiments and proves to be extremely useful to his allies thanks to being the equivalent of a paopei blacksmith. He loves breaking the fourth wall, and always makes sure that he is facing the camera. He is terrified of heights, which can sometimes be troublesome as he is essentially living on a giant floating rock. In combat, he focuses exclusively on his defensive abilities and uses the paopei Kyuryu Shinkatou, a protective shell that can also be used for imprisoning opponents. Although Nataku despises him, Taiitsu regards him with a mixture of both fear and fondness and is always worried that he might get attacked by him.

  • Bombproof Appliance: Since his Kuryuu Shinkato (Nine Dragons Divine Fire Basket) is the toughest amongst the Paopei, he can lock himself inside it to escape Nataku's outbursts.
  • Brainy Brunette: His brilliant mind can do wonders with technology.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Taiitsu is so camera-savvy that he always poses facing the panel. Other characters lampshade this endlessly.
  • Foil: To the Kingo-based Ryogaku and the Konron Sennin Unchuushi. Compared to their unethical and cruel experimentations on their creations/disciples, Taiitsu looks like a reasonable saint.
  • Genius Bruiser: While he's not exactly a threat in combat, he's the most skilled Paopei user in Konron and an ace pilot on his mecha Kokin Rikishi (Yellow-banded Strongman).
  • Mad Scientist: Of the non-evil kind. He is obsessed with science and devotes all his time to experimenting with and creating paopeis and he doesn't seem to possess any fighting abilities, using only a defensive paopei in battle.
  • Non-Action Guy: Taiitsu only seems to employ a protective paopei which he sometimes uses to trap people with.
  • Techno Wizard: His paopei defy the laws of physics.
  • Ultimate Blacksmith: He can easily create physics-defying paopei, which earned him a place among the great Sennin.
  • Why Did It Have To Be Heights?: Taiitsu Shinjin is afraid of heights. If living on a floating rock is not enough, he often finds himself in situations where he must confront his fear.

Seikyo Doutoku Shinjin

Paopei: Bakuya Hoken / II

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dotoku_shinjin.png
Voiced By: Jin Kikuchi (1999 Anime, PS1 Game), Showtaro Morikubo (2018 Anime)
Voiced in English By: Ricco Fajardo

Kou Tenka's master, he emphasizes greatly on honor and spirit in his training. He is obsessed with sports and constantly wears a training outfit. His weapon of choice is the Bakuya Hoken II. During the great sennin war, he joins the fight against Bunchuu and is houshined.

  • Cool Teacher: He has the appearance of a cheerful and highly energetic young man and fights with a laser sword. He and his student get along very well.
  • Cool Sword: Tenka got his paopeis from him, so it stands to reason that he would have a cool laser sword.
  • Dynamic Entry: He crashes through the wall of young Kou Tenka's room in the middle of the night and asks the boy if he wants to become his disciple.
  • Foreshadowing: He mentions to Taikobou how he is worried about Tenka's recklesness and how it might cost him his life one day. Tenka does indeed die after a string of reckless actions.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: With the rest of the Great Sennin in the fight against Bunchuu.
  • Take Up My Sword: During the great sennin war, he asks Youzen to take his paopei to his student Kou Tenka.

Gyokutei Shinjin

Paopei: Zansenken

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gyokutei_shinjin.png
Voiced By: Nobuyuki Hiyama (2000-2001 PS1 Game), Jun'ichi Suwabe (2018 Anime)
Voiced in English By: Chuck Huber

Gyokutei is described as a serious and logical man. He is the master of Youzen and the one who raised him, and enjoys a very close bond with his disciple, who regards him as the most important person in his life. He wields the sword paopei Zensenken, which allows him great speed and accuracy. His serious exterior hides a gentle and warm personality, and he is able to get along well with Taikobou's team.

  • Body Horror: We are (mercifully) not shown the full extent of his injuries as a result of walking through an acid rain, but what we do see is gut wrenching. It is implied that the skin was burned off his skull, layer by layer.
  • The Comically Serious: In the manga, he seriously asks Taikoubou if "Memory" is some sort of secret technique. Justified, as the Japanese name of the game note  does sound like some secret technique.
  • Determinator: Not even having flesh-burning acid rained on him will stop him from carrying Youzen to safety. The moment he decides to do it, determination is etched on every line on his face.
  • Doting Parent: The manga makes it obvious that he absolutely adored Youzen, and he even sacrificed his life for him in the end.
  • Fragile Speedster: His weapon is fast and accurate, but overall Gyokutei is not a very powerful sennin.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Carries Youzen to safety through an acid rain before dying as a result of his horrific injuries, a scene made more heartbreaking by him reminiscing how he would carry little Youzen through the rain so that he wouldn't catch a cold.
  • Iaijutsu Practitioner: His Zansenken (Sennin Slayer Sword) can attack at the speed of sound, and his technique (usually executed with the drawn blade held under his left arm and behind his body) is compared to Iaido by Suupuushan. He's so fast he's seemingly cutting down things with Razor Wind without moving.
  • Parental Substitute: Has been a wonderful one for Youzen.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Has a brown one, together with a badass cape.
  • Take Care of the Kids: Him entrusting Youzen to Taikobou before he dies is basically this, as he is Youzen's adoptive father.

Fugen Shinjin

Paopei: Taikyoku Fuin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fugen_shinjin.png
Voiced By: Megumi Ogata (1999 Anime, PS1 Game), Nobunaga Shimazaki (2018 Anime)
Voiced in English By: Aaron Dismuke

Another member (and eventual leader) of the twelve great sennin, Fugen is Taikobou's kind-hearted best friend. They have the same age, and have been as close as brother since they met, with Fugen being the only person to give Taikobou an affectionate nickname. His influence over his friend can be seen through Taikobou's habit of fishing with a straight hook, as Fugen is a pacifist wishes to avoid causing pain and suffering to any living being. He is extremely well versed in physics and chemistry, and wields the paopei Taikyoku Fuin, which allows him to break down and recreate bonds between atoms.

  • Affectionate Nickname: He has one for Taikoubou: "Bou-chan."
  • Badass Pacifist: Fugen Shinjin hates conflicts and will always attempt to reason with his enemies before attacking. When he does attack, however, his enemies will instantly regret they didn't choose the peaceful way of resolving things.
  • Barrier Warrior: One of the functions of his Paopei allows him to create an anti-gravitational field to repeal attacks. It's still insufficient to shield him from Bunchuu.
  • Best Friend: Of Taikobou.
  • Captain Ersatz: Look no further than Fugen Shinjin: doesn't he look like Kaworu to you? Well, maybe with the sweetness and Technical Pacifist tendency cranked up to eleven.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Fugen's philosophy dictates that one must avoid causing pain and suffering to anyone or anything. Unless forced.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: During the great Sennin War, he attempts a Taking You with Me on Bunchuu, but it fails. At least, he manages to physically wound him.
  • Holy Halo: He wears one above his head. Its purpose is never discussed, but it helps underline his almost saintly nature.
  • Master Computer: Fugen's Paopei Taikyoku Fuin (Seal of Creation) is specifically called a "computer" and used as such to obtan various effects. A computer shaped like a shiny orb too.
  • Symbol Motif Clothing: Fugen's clothes make him look somewhat similar to an angel, reflecting his gentle and peaceful personality.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: One of the gentlest and purest characters in the series. He is killed during the great sennin war.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Due to his peaceful ways and gentle manner, Fugen doesn't come across as a powerful sennin. Push him far enough though, and you will literally be obliterated.

Sekiseishi

Paopei: Onmyokyo

Voiced in English By: Brandon Scheiber

A samurai-like member of the Juunisen, In Hon's teacher. Dies fighting Bunchu.

  • Energy Weapon: His Onmyokyo (Yin Yang Mirrors) is a set of squared mirrors which can shoot laser beams on opponents.
  • Master Swordsman: In addition to his Paopei, he carries a katana with him. He loves melee weapons.
  • Samurai: He looks like one, plus the Cool Shades.
  • Sitcom Archnemesis: He's apparently this to his colleague Koseishi. In their introduction they end up fighting each other.

Koseishi

Paopei: Banten'in

A militaristic and disciplined member of the Juunisen, rival of Sekiseishi and In Chao's teacher. Dies fighting Bunchu.

  • The Atoner: He's visibly ashamed that In Chao betrayed Konron, and is willing to make amends.
  • BFG: The fully-displayed Benten'in (Heaven-Turning Seal) takes the form of a giant organic mix of cannon and manta ray which shoots deadly beams from the front.
  • Blood Knight: Downplayed, but his clothes resemble a military uniform and loves war.
  • Megaton Punch: When Sekiseishi mocks him for his lousy Paopei, Koseishi sends him flying with an uppercut.
  • Sitcom Archnemesis: He's apparently this to his colleague Sekiseishi. In their introduction they end up fighting each other.

Doko Tenson

Paopei: Banno Bocho

Voiced in English By: Brittney Karbowski

The youngest of the Juunisen, he's a very young child who can be very mean if provoked. He's Igo's teacher.

  • Berserk Button: Ignoring or ditching him. If you do so, the normally cheerful Doko will suddenly turn into a furious, knife-swinging madman calling you out.
  • Blade Spam: His Paopei Banno Bocho (Universal Knife) is a simple looking kitchen knife which multiplies when swung.
  • Butt-Monkey: He gets the least respect among the Juunisen, probably because he's just a kid.
  • Flight: He's always flying, somehow. Sengyoku even latches on his tail and forces him to be a transportation method.
  • Sole Survivor: He and Taiitsu are the only survivors of the Juunisen.
  • Tag Along Kid: The youngest and most child-like of the Juunisen, and he's even seen asking other Sennin to play with him or drinking from a milk bottle.

Reihou Daihoshi

Paopei: Rakkonshou

Voiced in English By: Andy Mullins

An elderly member of the Juunisen. Dies fighting Bunchu.

  • Brown Note: Given the meaning of his Paopei Rakkonshou (Bell of the Fallen Souls), it's implied that it has noxious effects on those who hear it. Didn't help against Bunchuu, if only because the Paopei bombardment.
  • Improbable Weapon User: A massive bell on a stick.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: He only appears during the great Sennin War arc, doesn't speak much, is put on a team with other two flat characters and gets killed by Bunchuu near the end.

Kuryuuson

Paopei: Konsenjo

Voiced in English By: Garrett Schenck

A gnome-like member of the Juunisen, Dokoson's teacher. Dies fighting Bunchu.

  • Knows the Ropes: Wields the Paopei Konsenjo (Sennin Strangling Rope), a series of drilling ropes shot from his hat.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: He's the smallest and oldest-looking of the Juunisen and he's even smaller than Doko, a child.
  • Not Afraid to Die: When faced with the imminent war against Kingo, he calmly claims to have lived long enough. Jikoh angrily reminds him that they're not all as long-lived as he.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: He only appears during the great Sennin War arc, doesn't speak much, is put on a team with other two flat characters and gets killed by Bunchuu near the end.

Monjuukohou Tenson

Paopei: Rurihei

Voiced in English By: Ben Phillips

A reclusive, nerd-like member of the Juunisen dressed in black. Dies fighting Bunchu.

  • BFG: Rurihei (Lapislazuli Bin) is essentially a Paopei Rocket Launcher. Included in the package, a rocket with "Die!!" written on the side.
  • Dull Surprise: Unlike the other Sennin, he doesn't emote at all as he uses his Paopei.
  • Flat Character: He gets the least characterization of the Sennin.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: He only appears during the great Sennin War arc, doesn't speak much, is put on a team with other two flat characters and gets killed by Bunchuu near the end.

Koryuu Shinjin

Paopei: Unnamed Sword Paopei

Voiced in English By: Gabe Kunda

A massive and dark-skinned member of the Juunisen, he's the largest member. Dies fighting Bunchu.

  • The Big Guy: He's the largest and most imposing of the Juunisen, and has muscles to much. Appears to be a Gentle Giant.
  • Cool Sword: His unnamed Paopei is a massive two-handed sword, which is why, apparently, he's the best melee fighter of the Juunisen. It's probably the only sword in the manga which does look like a proper weapon.
  • The Worf Effect: He and Jigou try to attack Bunchuu in melee after the other Sennin's ranged barrage, but they're quickly destroyed by Kinben.

Jigou Shinjin

Paopei: Unnamed Knuckleduster Paopei

A young and hotblooded member of the Juunisen, he's the most extrovert. Dies fighting Bunchu.

  • Anime Hair: Has spiky messy brown hair alongside his moustaches and stubble.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: He and Koseishi are seemingly the only two Juunisen actually excited at the idea of the war against Kingo.
  • Hot-Blooded: He's the most hotblooded and direct of the Juunisen.
  • Elemental Punch: His unnamed Paopei resembles a set of knuckledusters he can wrap in flames for punching attacks. He and Kouryuu and the melee-specialists among the Juunisen.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: He doesn't bother to wear too much aside from clothes on his legs.
  • The Worf Effect: He and Kouryuu try to attack Bunchuu in melee after the other Sennin's ranged barrage, but they're quickly destroyed by Kinben.

    Hakutsuru Doji

Hakutsuru Doji

Paopei: Hiraii (Anime only)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hakutsuru.png
Voiced By: Kazuya Kobayashi (1999 Anime, PS1 Game), Kengo Takanashi (2018 Anime)
Voiced in English By: Anthony Bowling
Voiced in Latin American Spanish By: Benjamín Rivera

The white crane Hakutsuru Doji is one of Genshitenson's most trustworthy disciples. Hakutsuru is still in his animal form and still has a few more hundred years of training before he will be able to attain a human form. Hakutsuru is often called upon to act as a messenger between people that are far away.

  • Adaptational Villainy: In the Anime he tries to stop the heroes when they rebel agaisnt Genshi Tenson.
  • Funny Bird: He is a huge-eyed crane wearing human gloves, pants and shoes.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: A crane who wears gloves, shoes, a little hat and a pair of pants.
  • Sphere Eyes: Has large, round eyes with large black irises.
  • Talking Bird: He is perfectly capable of speech. Justified as he is training to achieve human form and already shows human characteristics.

    Unchuushi

Unchuushi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unchuushi.png
Voiced By: Daisuke Ishikawa (1999 Anime, PS1 Game)
Voiced in English By: John Burgmeier

A sennin interested in science and paopei experiments and the master of Raishinshi. He approached Raishinshi's adoptive father Ki Shou when the boy was still young and received permission to take him to the sennin world. He proved to be a cruel and abusive master, trapping Raishinshi in the sennin world and subjecting him to very strict and exhausting trainings, ultimately tricking him into eating a fruit that changed his biological makeup. Once Raishinshi grew wings and received the ability to control lighting, he fried Unchuushi and ran away into the human world.

  • Admiring the Abomination: When studying Ohtenkun's Tick Paopei he calls it both beautiful and horrible when he corrects himself.
  • Blob Monster: His remedy to "repair" Igo involves putting an incredibly disgusting-looking blob on his bare skin so that it will grow roots in his body and heal the wounds. And poor Igo has an incredibly sensitive skin.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Idiotic and amoral as he is, Genshi Tenson trust his judgement and he's a legitimately competent doctor.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Played for laughs in his interactions with Raishinshi: he just has a bad memory.
  • For Science!: Doesn't seem to care about anything else.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Unchuushi realized a little too late that giving the power of flight and to summon lightning from the skies to a kid who hated him was not a bright idea.
  • Lack of Empathy: Unchuushi put Raishinshi through some very harsh training when he was a young child and fed him a fruit that made him grow fangs and wings when the boy was merely eight years old. Raishinshi was understandably very angry and ashamed by his new, monstrous body, but Unchuushi did not seem to care at all.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: As soon as Raishinshi realizes he is now stronger than Unchuushi, he strikes him with several powerful lightning bolts and flees the sennin world.
  • Innocently Insensitive: He carelessly tells Raishinshi that his beloved father died of an illness. Raishinshi... doesn't take it well.
  • Mad Scientist: Fits this trope well, as he has no qualms about human experimentation and seems devoid of sympathy for his victims.
  • Obliviously Evil: Unchuushi is quite ethically corrupt, but he seems to be completely clueless that what he is doing is abusive. When Raishinshi is distraught at having the color of his skin changed, growing fangs and wings, Unchuushi hapily tells him to not be so upset because his experiment was a success and Raishinshi became much stronger as a result... completely ignoring the boy's obvious trauma and persistent wish to leave the sennin world in the first place.
  • Training from Hell: He subjects Raishinshi to this and remains unmoved by the boy's tears.

    Doukouson

Doukouson

Paopei: Doryuuso

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/doukoson.png
Voiced in English By: Jordan Dash Cruz

A disciple of Kuryuson Daishoushi, one of the twelve great sennins, Doukouson lives in the caves of the Kyouryuu mountains and uses the paopei Doryuusou. He strongly resembles a mole, and his specialty is digging tunnels. Although unattractive and a bit of a pervert, Doukouson is a true gentleman at heart and will often risk his life to protect women. Doukouson is not very powerful by himself, but sometimes plays an instrumental role in some of Taikobou's schemes. Later in the story, he gets an admirer in Tou Sengyoku, who adores him regardless of his appearance. He initially doesn't like her, but by the end of the story she marries him anyway.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: He sees Tou Sengyoku as this initially, but he mellows down with time.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: A benign example. He desperately wanted a pretty girl to get past his unsightly appearance and love him. When it happens, it's with a Fiery Redhead who annoys him and ignores his desire to stay away from her. They get better in the end, although it's still played for laughs.
  • Berserk Button: Doesn't like being reminded that he's a gonk.
  • Casanova Wannabe: He goes skirt-chasing a lot and hatches schemes to divert the girls' gaze from his unattractiveness. It doesn't work. Ironically, he wasn't trying to impress the one girl who ends up falling for him.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: He might be a shameless skirt-chaser, but he is always ready to help and protect women, even at the cost of his life.
  • Foil: To Ryukan, Sengyoku's stalker. Compared to him, Doukouson is unattractive, relatively weak and a serial skirt-chaser. But while the handsome and powerful Ryukan is a frighteningly deluded stalker who will not take no for an answer, Doukouson is someone who firmly believes that women should be treated gently, and is willing to sacrifice himself to protect them.
  • Gonk: He is very unattractive, and he is aware of that.
  • Has a Type: He seems to like beautiful, dark-haired women who exude femininity. He gets something quite different by the end of the story...
  • Mole Men: He looks very much like a mole, he lives in a system of caves and his paopei has the shape of a mole's claws.
  • The Nose Knows: He has an enhanced sense of smell, which he uses mostly to find girls to flirt with. When he is introduced in the story, he keeps mentioning how he can smell Hekiun's scent around a certain area.
  • Pun: Doryuuso means "Earth Dragon's Claw" as seen below, but Doryuu is normally read as "Mogura", which means "Mole".
  • Tunnel King: His Paopei Doryuuso (Earth Dragon's Claw) allows him to dig tunnels at high speed, but he can't dig through rock.

Two beautiful sennin sisters, disciples of Ryuukitsu Koushu, Sekiun and her younger sister Hekiun are among the few women seen on the Konron Mountain. They do not seem to be particularly strong and are never shown using paopei, which implies that they still have some work to do in their training. They are very devoted to and deeply respect their teacher Ryuukitsu. Sekiun is the strongest of the two, both physically and mentally, and has to usually look out for her sister. The two usually hang around their teacher, and her delicate health is one of their main concerns.

  • Damsel in Distress: The heroes rescue Hekiun from underneath a pile of earth and rocks.
  • Family Theme Naming: Hekiun and Sekiun.
  • Fangirl: Hekiun has a huge crush on the handsome Youzen. He's not interested.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Sekiun is responsible and keeps her head cool in a crisis, while Hekiun crumbles much more easily and is shown to be a bit flirty and flighty in comparison to her more serious sister.
  • Stripperiffic: Hekiun dresses very scantily.

    Kintaku and Mokutaku

Kintaku

Paopei: Tonryuuto

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kintaku.png

The oldest son of Li Sei and Yinshi and the older brother of Mokutaku and Nataku. He is a doushi studying under Monjyuu Kouhou Tenson, one of the twelve great sennins. He has a cheerful and upbeat personality, in contrast to his taciturn younger brother Nataku, whom he did not meet until they had both already grown up. He uses the paopei Tonryuutou, comprised of several round rings which can immobilize an opponent. He and his brother later join Taikobou in his quest to replace the Yin with the Shou dynasty.

  • Eyes Always Shut: Combined with his perpetual smile, it gives him a very friendly appearance.
  • Family Theme Naming: Kintaku, Mokutaku and Nataku.
  • Gallows Humor: When Nataku acquires a strong lance paopei, Mokutaku asks Kintaku whether they should be worried, since they challenged him to a battle when they first met. Kintaku laughs and says that in the worst scenario, they will join the houshin list. Mokutaku is not amused.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Is always seen with a smile on his face.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: With his younger brother Nataku.
  • Those Two Guys: Never seen without his brother Mokutaku.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: The main purpose of Tonryuuto (Hidden Dragon Stake) is to restrain enemies so that Mokutaku can slice them to pieces.

The brother of Kintaku and Mokutaku and the disciple of Fugen Shinjin. He wields the sword-type paopei Gokouken, which can also double as a boomerang. He and Kintaku did not meet Nataku until they were already teenagers. He ends up supporting the Shou dynasty together with his brothers.

Paopei: Goumasho

Voiced in English By: Jason Liebrecht

Doko Tenson's disciple, he's a young man who talks like an old man. He has incredibly sensitive skin and an excellent sixth sense, but he's lazy and refuses to work free.

  • Antiquated Linguistics: He looks pretty young, but he speaks like an old man, as both Taikoubou and Youzen note.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Once he gets motivated enough to use his Paopei, he'll charge recklessly.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He's a lazy Doushi who speaks like a geezer. He killed a Juttenkun.
  • Hyper-Awareness: He has an incredibly sensitive skin, and thus an extremely well-developed sixth sense which allows him to No-Sell Ohtenkun's Ticks and to see through illusions.
  • Incredibly Lame Pun: He's also guilty of making terrible puns with his and his master's names.
  • Lazy Bum: If he's not on a mission, he'll spend his time sleeping or napping.
  • Morph Weapon: His Paopei Goumasho (Demon-Conquering Pestle) is normally shaped as a small staff with clubs at both ends. If required though it can morph into a longsword.
  • Mr. Vice Guy: He makes it clear to Taikoubou: his motto is "Do ut Des", so he expects to be handsomely rewarded for his cooperation in the Great Sennin War. Taikoubou has to give him a pudgy Sento to persuade him.
  • Nice Guy: Aside from his greed, he's a rather kind person and a good guy overall.
  • Sword Beam: Goumasho leaves shining trail behind which then explodes.
