Misused: Precision F Strike

Go To

Deadlock Clock: Mar 3rd 2023 at 11:59:00 PM

Note: This thread was proposed by FernandoLemon.

Precision F-Strike is a trope about the usage of swearing to denote a dramatic or serious moment, either in a work that normally doesn't feature it, or by a character that rarely swears. However, as shown by this wick check, only about 7% of the examples are used correctly, with a large majority instead referencing any instance of swearing in a work regardless of context or how common an occurrence it is. The trope has also become a Pothole Magnet, as it is often sinkholed to any usage of "fuck" when quoting a work.

Proposed solution: The actual concept is valid, so renaming the trope and turning the old one into a disambiguation between the new one, Cluster F-Bomb, Atomic F-Bomb and other such tropes should do.

Wick check:

• Of 114 wicks...
• 8 (6.9%) are used correctly
• 43 (37.1%) are potholed to a swear word, whether in a quote or an example
• 35 (30.2%) are random bits of profanity without context as to why they count
• 7 (6.0%) are about frequent swearing, which is Cluster F-Bomb
• 11 (9.5%) are zero-context examples
• 7 (6.0%) are other types of potholes
• 5 (4.3%) don't belong in any of the previous categories

Profanity used in a work or by a character that rarely uses it, to show seriousness (correct)
1. ComicBook.Hitman 1993: Natt's mother made him give up swearing as her dying wish. A quote would help with context, but I think this is correct
2. Fanfic.Oh God Not Again: When Cedric hears the first task of the Playoffs will be to steal an egg from a nesting dragon mother, he takes a deep breath and just says, "Shit." Sounds correct
3. Film. The Magnificent Seven 2016: Mixed with Foreign Cuss Word. When Faraday gets shot in the side, Vasquez goes berserk and shoots the culprit multiple times while saying which literally means . The context that it's during a dramatic moment seems correct
4. Film. The Servant: When Barrett phones Vera with the news that he has persuaded Tony to take her on as a maid, a group of young girls hammer on the sides of the phone box with growing impatience. When Barrett exits the phone booth, he shouts "Get out of my way, you fucking bitch!" to one of the girls (this being 1963, the offending words are partially drowned out by a vehicle, but what he says is still clear). The extra context makes me think this counts
5. Film. The Spectacular Now: Invoked by Sutter. He says that in order to stand up to her mother, Aimee must say "get off my mother-fucking back!" I think this counts too
6. Literature. The Empirium Trilogy: After Corien shows Audric and everyone attending his wedding a vision of what happened to his father, Audric takes Rielle aside to confront her about the lies she's told. Ludivine keeps trying to redirect the conversation to other matters, but Audric- someone who isn't prone to swearing- essentially tells her to shut the fuck up. Correct
Ludivine: Stop berating her and listen to me. Corien is coming, and he's close. We should be sending out every last soldier to bolster the city's defenses against him. And I should be searching for him rather than standing here keeping you from hurting each other. I suggest we talk about this later.
Audric (angrily): Fuck your suggestions. We're talking about this right now.
7. SCPFoundation.Tropes S To Z: Sophisticated as Hell: Even when trapped in a demonic Eldritch Location (SCP-1983), one Agent still manages to write an informal SCP Report. I think this counts?
Item #: Pending
Object Class: Keter. God help you.
Special Containment Procedures: You're going to die, you poor dumb fuck.
8. VideoGame.Ultrakill: Gabriel loses his composure and calls you an "insignificant fuck" when beaten. The fact that it happens after the character loses his composure makes it sound correct

    Potholed to a swear word
1. You Said You Would Let Them Go: In Fall Brawl 1997, after Curt Hennig betrayed The Four Horsemen and revealed himself to be The Mole for the New World Order, the rest of the nWo members handcuffed Chris Benoit and Steve McMichael and proceeded to give Ric Flair a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown until the other horsemen surrendered. When they dragged Flair to the cage door, Kevin Nash threatened that if they don’t surrender, Flair will have the cage door slammed on his head. McMichael's response was, "You got to stop this, god damn it!" After the nWo won, Curt Hennig slammed the door on Ric Flair’s head anyway.
2. Awesome.Aliens: The soldiers, after the retreat, debating how to deal with the xenomorphs and get vengeance for their fellow soldiers, and Ripley states they should take off and nuke the entire place from orbit, stating It's the Only Way to Be Sure. Hicks gives her a meaningful look and Hudson voices his approval by saying "Fuckin' A". In that moment Ripley gained their respect and truly became one of them.
3. Awesome.Berserk Abridged: Griffith's ultimate choice to the Godhand in the Abridged Series.
"Fuck... you! [...] Did I stutter, bitch? Get your demonic asses outta here and leave us the hell alone!"
4. Awesome.Critical Role Eyes Of Eiselcross Arc: Lucien is only slightly rattled, and verbally fences in return.
Lucien: I have the perspective of not just myself, and not just these fine companions (*points at the Tomb Takers*), or the perspective of nine, quite frankly, batty as shit individuals from a long time ago, but many, many minds of that period. And there's plenty of disagreement.
5. Awesome.Dumbing Of Age: After Joyce's kidnapping, her parents try to reach her on her cellphone. Sarah, knowing all too well how Joyce feels about her parents and her former community, and having been herself kidnapped along with Joyce, takes care of it in the most adequate way possible:
Sarah: (beep) FUUUUUCK OFFFFFFFF (beep)
6. Awesome.Eminem: One line in "Sing For The Moment" where Em gives one argument that kills one huge criticism of him.
If it's all political
and my music is literal
and I'm a criminal
How the FUCK can I raise a little girl?
7. Awesome.K: Note though: he doesn't just descend from the sky, he drops in like a fucking missile, causing an explosion, and just nonchalantly posing there with his trusty umbrella in a spiffy new white number like nothing's wrong. Even Yukari Mishakuji seems unsettled. Can we scream "Badass!" and "Holy Shit!" any more than we already are?
8. Awesome.Scream 3: Sidney's stopping the killer during his motive rant with the following:
Sidney: God, why don't you stop your whining and get on with it? I've heard this shit before!
Roman: STOP!
Sidney: Do you know why you kill people, Roman? Do you?
Roman: I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT!
Sidney: BECAUSE YOU CHOOSE TO! There is no one else to blame!
Roman: DAMN IT, FUCKING DAMN IT!
Sidney: Why don't you take some FUCKING responsibility?!
Roman: FUCK YOU!
Sidney: FUCK YOU!!
[They charge each other and a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown ensues.]

Yuuya's reaction to being cornered by the angered creepy doctor? "...Shit."
10. Characters.Sugoi Quest For Kokoro: Gratuitous Japanese: Peppers her dialogue with random "desu"s and "sugoi"s alongside the occasional "gomenasai".
Terezi-chan: Sakura-chan? Have you seen my spatula? I can't find it, I'm blind.
Sakura: anata can't find it because I fucking broke it you piece of shit.
11. DarthWiki.Ivalice Adventures: Alae, the barman mixed up Birch Beer with actual Beer and Alae, preoccupied with the fact that she was about to fight pirates, downed the entire glass. Hilarity. Fucking. Ensued.
12. Fanfic.Illimitable: The Juggernaut: "Is he fucking gone yet? We're running out of badasses."
13. Film.Face Off: Sarcastic Clapping: Lars and Leo abduct Dr. Walsh and transport him to the Walsh Institute, where they find the faceless Castor sitting in a chair, watching the video recording of the surgery (according to the script, the surgery was recorded so that Dr. Walsh could undo Archer's surgery) and listening to classical music:
Dr. Malcolm Walsh: What's this about?
Castor Troy: Dr. Walsh! I was just enjoying some of your, uh, greatest hits here. Oh, and I hope you don't mind. I partook in some of your, uh, your groovy painkillers. You know, this is fabulous work. This is... [sees the surgery videotape finish] Bravo! Bra-fucking-vo! [claps] Oh, god, this is excellent! Bravo!
Dr. Malcolm Walsh: What do you want? [beat]
Castor Troy: [claps his hands three times. Castor's skinless face is reflected in Dr. Walsh's glasses] Take one goddamn guess.

Lee: You gotta do what you can to survive.
Shawn: Like put a gun to [Duck's] head and pull the trigger?
Kevin: Yes.
Shawn: Fuck that, man.
Kevin: We'll see how you feel about that again after an hour with Duck.

22. Funny.Project Runway:
• Tim reads a question to Guadalupe about if her elimination was fair, comparing to Marla's rip-off dress. The bit went like this, intercut with various reactions: Zulema and Santino are laughing their asses off, Marla looks amused besides Guadalupe and all the others are confused.
Tim: We have a question from Bravotv.com. Arianne writes "Guadalupe..."
Guadalupe: Heyaa, Arianne!!!
Santino: Have you all guys been drinking or something? 'Cause... I want what they're having.
Tim: Did you feel that your elimination was fair? Even thought Marla had plagiarized a dress Nicky Hilton had worn before?
Guadalupe: Honestly, I can only give him a personal critique. Nobody would never know unless they personally respond to me. Would know what my personal response is. And that is of me, and personally I believe you can, like, push the boundaries, and like Johnny Cash, "Walk the line and..."
Heidi: This is so confusing. What was the question?
Tim: I haven't a clue any longer!!
Heidi: What was the question about?
Tim: Did you feel your elimination was fair, given that Marla plagiarized a Nicky Hilton dress? Yes or No.
Guadalupe: Understand that Marla... has... an aesthetic that I... cannot... d-duppplicate. But Marla has an aesthetic that she cannot duplicate. And, Arianne, in national television, if can get this, you f*** rock, 'cause you believe in what is true.
(Awkward silece. Zulema claps in laughter)
Guadalupe: Period.
Guadalupe: I agree as well.
Tim: Let's move on.
• Special highlight to "Daniel Franco" song, which resulted in the man himself getting a round of applause at the reunion show.
Daniel Franco, where did you go?

Hey. Where's Daniel Franco? Daniel? Daniel, come back!
Where did you... Goooo!
Auf wiedersehen, Modaf*cka!
23. Funny.Russell Howards Good News: One of the clip shows features one of the lesser-known segments, "Headliners", where Russell talks to two people who both think they're newsworthy enough to be on the show. One such guest is an East Londoner one-man-band, who teaches Russell about the Cockney version of the shave-and-a-haircut outro, with bonus Audience Participation (which in this case is just Russell holding a banana):

• Eleanor reluctantly begins her speech.
Eleanor: The dictionary defines "best" as being—
Tahani: [audibly drunk, shoves Eleanor aside] Oh God, boring! I'd like to say a few words, if nobody minds!
Eleanor: [whispers to gear] Thank you, wizard.
Tahani: I am Tahani; Tahani am me. And even though I wasn't the [sarcastic] "number one point-getter", I just wanted to welcome you all to the neighborhood. You all look so beautiful tonight, with your regular-sized pockets and... regular-sized soulmates. Oh, no offense, darling, wherever you are. [Tomás waves in the crowd] Probably somewhere down there.
Michael: [to Eleanor, quietly] Why don't you try to ease her off the stage and take over yourself.
Tahani: The point is, we're all good people, right? We all did the right thing, whenever we could? And that's why it's so nice to be here among you, in this massive house, that I want. I want this house. Give it! [laughs] No, I'm just kidding. But really, give me the house.
Eleanor: [gently] Hey there, hot stuff. Can I get you a cup of coffee?
Tahani: Get your hands off me! Oh, you think you're better than I am, don't you, just 'cause you're wearing that. Look at that terrible placement and angle! Is this your first time ever wearing a sash?
Eleanor: Yeah, it is, but I think if we all just-
Tahani: Well, give it to me then! [tears off Eleanor's sash, falling backwards into the shrimp display, which itself falls over and sets a curtain on fire]
Eleanor: ...I got her off the stage!
Michael: Tahani? Are you alright?
Tahani: Yes, fine. Never better. Top of my game, actually. You'll have to excuse me, 'cause I've got to go, so. Oh look! [pulls a shrimp out of her pocket] I've got some shrimp. [tearing up] In one of my many, many cargo pants pockets. [sobs]
Michael: What the fork is happening?

• In this 2v2 match, Brian, annoyed at the constant bad luck he was having through the first 7 minutes at this game, angrily plays a +4 card... and belatedly realized that Vanoss also has a +4 which winds up being played, saddling Delirious (Brian's teammate) with a +8 when the latter was on Uno. Delirious reacts in disbelief at Brian's Fury-Fueled Foolishness, while Vanoss and Moo both laugh at his ill-thought-out decision.

Terroriser: What the fuck is that?
Basically: What's Mickey Mouse doin' in here?

TearJerker.Todd In The Shadows: "Top 10 Best Songs of 2020" is a mostly wistful, sentimental list as it entails all the songs that Todd felt helped him get through the absolute disaster of a year that was 2020, but he still has to make a comment on just how horrible it was when he gets to Lil Baby's "The Bigger Picture", a Protest Song for the Black Lives Matter Movement that Todd empathized with the most as, in his words, "Lil Baby isn't coming from anger, he's coming from pain," with Todd briefly spilling out all his frustrations of the crap the world has had to deal with over not just 2020, but the last few years in general.
Todd: ...This song is also how I felt watching the Muslim Ban, Puerto Rico, Charlottesville, every fucking thing that happened in these last few years, including this last week where I was supposed to be trying to make this goddamn video, but I kept getting distracted by more horrible fucking news! This shit fucking sucks and it's gotta fucking stop!

Ed (visibly disturbed): "So, let me get this straight... You had a teacher who trained you for only two weeks, throw you into some rescue mission in a country you have little knowledge about, all for some girl you barely know? Am I the only one seeing something fucking wrong with that?"

20. Music.Minutes To Midnight: Twice in "Bleed It Out":
Yeah here we go for the hundredth time
Hand grenade pins in every line
Throw 'em up and let something shine
Going out of my

21. Music.Tool: "Pushit""Remember I will always love you // As I claw your fucking throat away", "Ticks and Leeches""Taking all you can take, you can fucking take" (it's actually the only song on Lateralus that has any cursing), "The Pot""Eyeballs deep in muddy waters, Fuckin' hypocrite", and "7empest", whose F-bomb is actually in the spoken part before the song begins."Keeping it calm // Fuck, here we go again"
22. Narm.Valvrave The Liberator: Kyuma's screaming in anger in episode 8 wasn't originally narmy, but one group's subtitles of that scene—translating "chickishou" as "fuck"—and also having the font gradually increase in size as he screamed made it into this.
23. Recap.Dragon Ball Z Abridged K 3 (first wick): As part of the April Fools' Day joke, both Krillin and Garlic Jr. get uncensored F-bombs.
24. Recap.South Park S 1 E 11 Toms Rhinoplasty: "Don't. Fuck. With. Wendy. Testaburger!"
25. Series.Good Game: From the Goose IMO segment on entitlement and death threats:
Goose: If you are ever considering sending a death threat, let's go through this little checklist first. Number one: "Should I send a death threat?" F(bleep) NO!
26. Series. If I Ruled The World: Answering a question about food labelling:
Hugh Dennis: I would certainly have one label in fast food restaurants, on those little apple pies that you get. Just from the point of view of safety, I would have a little label that said 'These really, really, are [BLEEP]ing hot.'
27. Series. The League Of Gentlemen: "Yeah... cunt."
28. Series.Wipeout 2008:
• In the very first episode of the UK version, a contestant can be heard cursing as he falls off the Sweeper. The editors and producers apparently didn't hear it, as it is completely uncensored.
• Similarly, in the series 2 finale, somebody reacts to another contestant getting whacked hard by the Sweeper with the same word, and the censors forgot to mute it.
29. Theatre.Knights Of The Square Table: Sir Galahad begins one but Merlin cuts him off
GALAHAD: You sick, twisted son -
MERLIN: It was complicated until
30. VideoGame.Sissys Magical Ponycorn Adventure: Obviously less intense variant: Sissy friggin' LOVES ponycorns!
31. VideoGame.Spider Man Shattered Dimensions: Mood Whiplash: The second Ultimate Spider-Man segment has Spidey fighting against the wisecracking Deadpool. The third segment involves Carnage breaking free of his cointainment, slaughtering several agents, and reanimating their corpses. Spider-Man's also more serious during this chapter (though he still throws out wisecracks, such as referring to Carnage as "a monster made of malevolent spaghetti") and even lets loose a couple swears. Justified, since this is Carnage we're talking about.
32. WebAnimation.Demo Mesa: The Demo!G-man's only line, to Demo!Freeman.
Demo!G-Man: Ya fucked up!
33. WebVideo.Doom Day: "Fuck no ammo :c" commented out
34. WebVideo. The Miracle Of Swindon Town: During the Wimbly Wombly's game against mk Dons, John's language gets a little more... salty.
35. Wrestling.Alexander Otsuka: According to him, "fuck your mother" were the first Spanish words he learned in México.

    Frequent swearing (Cluster F-Bomb)
1. Characters.Ninja Slayer: Has a penchant for saying "Buddha fuck!" in English.
2. DarthWiki.Power Rangers Redverse: Power Rangers RPM Redverse, much like its inspiration, is designed specifically to be THE darkest out of the franchise, even going as far as to feature frequent and heavy swearing as well as the After the End theme being explored much more for horror and despair than adventure.
3. Film. The Last Boy Scout: Lots of characters in the movie, but listen to Darian's line to Marcone.
Darian: Eat shit, you fucking redneck!
4. Film. The Wave 2015: Sir Swears-a-Lot: Kristian is something of a pottymouth, but this stops cold when the sirens begin sounding. The Danish tourist Philip definitely qualifies, as he repeatedly drops Precision F Strikes during his time in the bomb shelter.
5. SoundEffectBleep.Live Action TV: In the Fox's The George Carlin Show, the episode "George Speaks His Mind" is loaded with LOTS of these, each of them a Precision F-Strike.
6. VideoGame. This Is The Police 2: The game does not shy away from swearing.
7. Webcomic.Alien Loves Predator: Cluster F-Bomb: And thus, Preston's favorite word is revealed.

    Zero-context examples
1. Characters.Around The Clock At Bikini Bottom: Mr.Krabs has a few of these moments. One, in the cutscene of the Mermalair level where SpongeBob mentions that Dirty Bubble has harmed his customers before. The other in the Krusty Krab section of the final level when an Alpha comes out of nowhere.
2. Characters.Char Cole: Delivers a powerful one during his first battle.
3. Characters. The Nexus: Just the trope name without any context
4. DarthWiki.I Antivirus: Just the trope name without any context
5. DarthWiki.Survival Despair: At Lorena during the mastermind trial.
6. Fanfic.Luz Noceda The Fighter: Luz lets one out when she discovers the messes with the Slitherbeast and the Greater Basilisk.
7. Fanfic.Wings Of Rebellion: Akechi has a few moments of these, usually when he's angry like when Okumura takes Haru hostage or after losing to the twins, where he doesn't want any pity.
8. Film. The Ref: Mostly carpet bombing, but there is one nicely-timed unison strike by the Chasseurs against their marriage counselor.
9. Film. The Void (first wick): Happens a few times, always involving Daniel.
10. Literature.Illium: Used occasionally as a means of showing how scared or nonplussed the characters are.
11. Recap.Torchwood S 1 E 13 End Of Days: Gwen drops a giant one after Jack makes an armor piercing statement and she responds with an armor piercing punch.

    Other potholes
1. Henpecked Husband: Hard Rain: Henry is one to Doreen. He finally decides he has had enough and puts her in her place with a Precision F-Strike.
2. FreudianTrio.Video Games: 'BlazBlue: Ego: Hazama, who nicely balances the other two out. He is just as evil as Terumi is, but in a much more subtle way, and he has an extremely polite speaking manner like Kazuma (though he sometimes manages to slip some bad words in between).
3. Funny.Borderlands 3: The Halloween event seems to have a weird aversion towards saying Hell (the actual location is called "Heck"). This is an M rated game where enemies can be blown into chunks, the Vault Hunters do swear, and the game contains least one Precision F-Strike. It's sort of silly how these seasoned killers won't say the word Hell, but will swear using other, generally considered harsher, curses.
4. Manga.Sands Of Destruction: Scanlation: Tactful Translation: Sandy 87's translations sometimes fall here. While "that low-born Lacertus Rex" may be an acceptable (if rather literal) translation of ワニ師の野郎, fully capturing Agan's intent would likely require a well-placed expletive. It does at least have some Added Alliterative Appeal.
5. Pantheon.Establishments And Installations: The Institute offered Issac Clarke a place in this division due to his background as an engineer. Clarke told them exactly where they can shove that offer.
6. Series.Shaun Micallefs Mad As Hell: Once a Season: Season 11 ended with a cover of September by Earth, Wind and Fire, in reference to (hopefully) being allowed to have actual dancers perform in their next end of season song in September. Towards the end, Emily points out to a dancing Shaun that they're starting filming in August so their end of season song will actually be in October. Shaun ends the season with a Precision F-Strike.
7. WebVideo.Brutalmoose: Early-Installment Weirdness: Ian was much more liberal with Cluster F-Bombs in his earlier videos as opposed to the Precision F-Strike he prefers nowadays. The two Restaurant Empire reviews, spaced three years apart, illustrate this perfectly.

    Other
1. Creator.Lewis Lovhaug: invokedWhile Lovhaug is generally civil and by and large trys to avoid using harder kinds of profanity, Mike Michaud struck a particular chord by creating a "response" to the #ChangeTheChannel controversy, to which Lovhaug ultimately responded by telling Michaud to "not fucking tell" him to be happy about being contractually obligated to be in the anniversary movies. This would be correct if it wasn't Real Life Troping
2. ComicBook. The Smurfs: Parodied in the original English version of "King Smurf", where one Smurf tells Brainy to "go to smurf" with his orders. Parodied
3. Recap.Farscape S 03 E 02 Suns And Lovers: "Frell me dead!" Is "frell" even a swear word?
4. VideoGame.Meat Boy: The final Light World level is appropriately named 'Four Letter Word'. You've undoubtedly used a lot of them throughout the game, and will inevitably let out many more on this level. I'd argue this is misuse, since the word is not said
5. VideoGame.Pa Rappa The Rapper: If you access Cool Mode in Stage 5 of PaRappa 2, Hairdresser Octopus will shout "Caramba!" which is a mild Spanish swear. It's not

Should we make a single prop for whether this should be renamed or not, or we go straight to a crowner of which new name it should have?

Out Of Character Swearing and Uncharacteristic Swearing can also work for the "character who doesn't typically swear, does in this instance"

And I agree with WarJay. I'm not typically a splitter, but if there are two somewhat distinct concepts being covered by this trope, then why not split them out.

I would like to propose that the usage check may not have accurately captured the nuances of the trope's usage. My impression of how it's used, or at least what I thought the trope was, is that it's effectively the inverse of Cluster F-Bomb, a single swear word with emphasis placed on it. Granted this makes it sound like a quieter Atomic F-Bomb, and if you asked me to give the difference between the two pages based on this idea I don't know if I would be able to give a better distinction than AFB being PFS But More So. Also, because tone doesn't come across well in text using PFS in potholes with this definition in mind might make it look like it's being used for any swearing.

Still, it's worth noting that the AFB page claims that "the Precision F-Strike relies on timing", which doesn't really capture that it's who's doing the swearing that's most important. On a similar note, what I describe above is probably more of an argument for a rename since attempting to fit the name into the context of Cluster F-Bomb and Atomic F-Bomb still wouldn't capture that it's something done by a character or work not normally prone to it and would lend itself more to what AFB claims the trope is about, and the previous paragraph is pretty much an argument against what I thought PFS was being tropeworthy, so this point doesn't necessarily matter too much to the end outcome.

OK, with the premature calls for a crowner out of the way, what about Precisely Placed Profanity if it's about timing/precision?

Edit: Or Unexpectedly Strong Profanity or Abruptly Strong Profanity since it can either be from a character who isn't expected to use strong language (or at least not language that strong) in addition to being from a work that doesn't usually contain language as strong as what's used. Leaning toward one of these since the description says it can be per-work or per-character.

My only issue with Precisely Placed Profanity is that it doesn't reflect this part of the trope's description.

It's usually intended to show that shit just got real serious.

I think Breaking Point Swearing (or Breaking Point Profanity) is a better choice. It conveys both the suddenness and the fact things got serious. It can also go for both a character and the work as a whole because it indicates that the situation has become bad enough for a character to swear. Which also implies that, in that work, swearing isn't used gratuitously.

Here there be cats.

[up]Now that you mention those two, I agree that those two would get the meaning across well, since it could refer to the breaking point for a character (using stronger-than-usual profanity to indicate that O.O.C. Is Serious Business) or a work (a work features profanity stronger than what had been seen at that point to indicate things getting serious).

Mainly, I'm against going with another name that refers to a specific word per what I said here about how profanity tropes that have a specific word in the name tend to attract misuse for any time that word appears (granted, some tropes are about a specific word, but they're also about specific uses of those words), especially because this trope covers profanity in general instead of just "fuck".
