Twelve Red Lines is a One Piece Self-Insert Fan Fiction by Vikingr. The suicide attempt of a gender-fluid young woman named Jones leads to her being rescued by the Straw Hat Pirates, and the truth of where she came from comes out the moment they see their Jolly Roger, painted mere days before, on her necklace. She joins the crew at Luffy’s insistence, and it takes no time at all for her presence to begin changing the story she knew.

A healthy blend of adventure, humor, parody, and real-world issues, it's neither as dark nor as silly as one would expect.

• Acceptable Breaks from Reality: It takes a lot more than just pressure to turn coal into diamonds- many impurities and non-carbon chemicals have to be removed, for example- but the story can get away with it because of a combination of One Piece science being weird and Devil Fruit BS.
• Achievement In Ignorance: In Chapter 23, when Jones uses her Newton's Third technique for the first time, she confides in an aside that she didn't know it would work, but she had no alternative.
• Actually Pretty Funny:
  • Ghin admits that the glue-and-feather prank that Johnny and Yosaku pull on him due to his mother hen tendencies is this...after they're out of earshot, with only Nami—who just burst out laughing—as witness.
  • Usopp manages to get Chopper and the baby bananagator that he brought with him to laugh when Miss Merry Christmas confronts them, though she is not amused:
  Usopp: Okay... My bad Chopper. Looks like we didn't get rid of all the moles.
• A Dog Named "Dog": Albeit as a Bilingual Bonus, but "Geier", Miss Friday's real name, is German for "vulture."
• Aerith and Bob: Miss Monday and Mr. Nine are given the names Mairead and Jack, while Goldenweek receives the name Lisa to go with 3's real name of Galdino.
• Affectionate Nickname: Jones often refers to Chopper as Choppy when speaking to him.
• All of the Other Reindeer: Let’s just say that Jones has had a lot of bad experiences with people in her backstory and leave it at that.
• An Arm and a Leg: Ghin loses an arm protecting Jones from Blackbeard.
• An Ice Person: In Chapter 32, Nami needs to express some Unstoppable Rage on Luffy, but he's immune to lightning. So she develops Blizzard Tempo to menacing effect. Zoro subsequently begins calling her yuki-onna (since Jones is already a witch).
• Apologizes a Lot: Jones being Canadian, it comes with the territory.
• A Rare Sentence:
  • From Chapter 3:
  Jones (narrative): Come on, where was a giant carnivorous sea cow when you needed one?
  • From Chapter 13:
  Jones (narrative): Well, at least I had experience jumping off cantering dinosaurs…Not something I'd ever expected to say as part of my everyday life.
  • From Chapter 23:
  Luffy: Jones… Did you hug a bomb to protect the city? You look like you hugged a bomb to protect the city.
• Armor-Piercing Question: The talk with Smoker in Chapter 24 devolves into a "The Reason You Suck" Speech, starting around the point that Jones says this:
  Jones: Let me ask you this, Smoker- if you knew a greedy slimeball of a man was going to steal the results of eight years of hard work from Tashigi, would you do anything in your power to stop him?
  Smoker: (irritably) Of course. Tashigi may be a forgetful klutz, but she's a good soldier and one of my best friends.
  Jones: What if that man were a marine?
  (Smoker stiffens, unable to reply)
• Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: The newspaper lists Axe-Hand Morgan's arrest charges as murder, fraud, theft, and tax evasion.
• Ascended Extra:
  • Courtesy of Jones's intervention, Ghin, Johnny, and Yosaku join the crew.
  • As do Miss Goldenweek and the Unluckies.
  • Baroque Works agents get a lot more attention, too. We start with Miss Monday/Mairead, Mr. 9/Jack, and the Unluckies, then we add Miss Goldenweek/Lisa. Then en route to Alubarna's palace, Mr. 10 and Miss Tuesday, only named in canon, show up and engage the Straw Hats in a fight, even if they lose rather quickly. And then, in the battle on Alubarna, every number team that hadn't defected or died shows up. To expand on this, three and a half teams (6, 10, 11's partner, & 12) never appeared in canon. 10 and Tuesday got sketches, but the rest of them got codenames and nothing else, meaning the author built them up from scratch.
  • Toma, the quiet and strong-willed swordsman who served as an unwilling Co-Dragon in the fifth movie, joins the crew as Zoro's apprentice.
• Ash Face: Usopp in Chapter 18, after one of the components for the Clima-Tact literally blows up in his face. Much to the amusement of Jones and Ruatha.
• Ask a Stupid Question...: Chapter 17:
  Kuromarimo: Yo Boss, you want me'n Chess to take care of 'em?
  Wapol: No, I want you to sit there and have a tea party. Of course I want you to take care of them!
• A-Team Firing: Jones is not a good shot. At all. "Shoot an arrow ninety degrees to the right" not a good shot.
• A Truce While We Gawk:
  • Subverted near the end of Chapter 13; the thunderous arrival of a Tyrannosaurus Rex to the area where Mr. 3 has the Straw Hats trapped in wax causes Luffy and Mr. 3 to stop fighting, but only for a second; even as it enters and charges the area, they don't even slow down in their fighting.
  • At the end of Chapter 34, the battle of Jones vs. Enel comes to an abrupt halt when Jones mishears 'Kiten' as 'kitten' and proceeds to glomp the electrical construct, which of course, sends her flying and knocks her out. Luffy, Usopp, Aisa, Nola, and Enel all stare in bewilderment for a long minute.
• Attack Reflector: One of the powers of the Force-Force Fruit that Jones eats; it's nearly identical to an Impact Dial with its function, save only that the force can explode outwards if too much is absorbed without releasing it.
• A Twinkle in the Sky:
  • In Chapter 32, this happens to Jones when she absorbs too much force from Wyper's missiles. Gets sent flying from the backlash, and Usopp, who grabs them right before they're sent flying, gets dragged along for the ride.
  • In Chapter 36, this happens to Enel when Jones and Usopp shoot him out of a cannon aimed at the moon.
• Awesome by Analysis: Smoker. Despite Jones butterflying away any conflict in Loguetown, he meets them again in Alabasta because of the reports he received of their exploits since then, correctly reasoning that they were pirates who, for some reason, were acting like heroes.
• Badass Normal: Jones. Though compared to monsters of the crew, she might not be seen that way, no one can deny her skill with karate or her chemistry expertise.
• Bag of Holding: Overlapping with Crazy-Prepared below, Ghin's coat seems to be this for him. In Chapter 17, in addition to a complete change of clothes for Jones, he's carrying bandages, rags, weapon polish, matches, and playing cards.
• Because You Were Nice to Me: Jones goes out of her way to keep carrying Miss Goldenweek as she flees from a pack of velociraptors, a chase lasting several minutes and causing several injuries. When she arrives at the safety of Broggy's camp, Goldenweek no longer has any desire to hurt Jones or the Straw Hats.
• Berserk Button:
  • You really shouldn't hurt children or animals in front of Jones. This goes double for hurting Ruatha.
  • Ace has two: don't badmouth Whitebeard, and don't hurt Luffy. Crocodile does both.
  • Don't even vaguely imply that you're threatening Sabo's brothers. Jones gets off with only a Death Glare and a calm warning because he knew her phrasing was accidental, but Sabo only just remembered them and absolutely will not lose them again.
• Big "WHAT?!": The Straw Hats have this reaction in Chapter 6 when their ship is stolen.
• Bilingual Bonus: While at first he mostly makes nonsense sounds, as the story progresses, Ruatha's dialogue has evolved into random words of Dovahzul. Sometimes they even fit the situation at hand.
• Blazing Inferno Hellfire Sauce: Or broth, in this case. Usopp describes Jones's ramen as "like eating ginger fire".
• Blind Without 'Em: Such is the case with Jones; Chapter 2 initially states that her vision is blurry without her glasses, and later, we get this:
  Jones: My glasses were a centimeter thick; when I'd gone to summer camp as a child, I'd managed to shoot a bow and arrow ninety degrees to the right of where I was going for.
• Blood Knight: An interesting example in that punching people helps control her anxiety, so Jones tends to seek out combat.
• Blood Lust: Jones isn't really this, but curiosity and a desire to intimidate make her lick a cut on Nezumi's cheek while she was trying to scare him and his lackeys. It works.
• Brainwashed and Crazy: Lisa subjects the Blackbeard Pirates to this, forcing them to aid her efforts against their Captain.
• Breaking the Fourth Wall: Jones doesn't take long to start doing this after she gains her Medium Awareness.
• Break Them by Talking: With all of the knowledge Jones has and a love of language, this is easily her most lethal weapon.
  • She gives a noteworthy one to Daz Bones in Chapter 24, taking a few shots in the dark with what she knows about his past to dissect his motivation for becoming an assassin rather than the hero he dreamed of becoming.
• Calling Your Attacks: Discussed more than once.
  • Luffy talks to Jones about it on the way to Whiskey Peak, and though Jones initially deems it impractical, she soon after begins naming her techniques.
  • Ghin muses on this in Chapter 17 while watching Chopper fight Wapol, and witnessing Wapol's Exactly What It Says on the Tin naming scheme:
  Ghin was actually feeling embarrassed for this guy's pathetic technique names. Which probably meant he'd been spending too much time with Jones, since he knew he never would've noticed before. Hell, on his one attempt at naming his own techniques in the past, the men he was leading had laughed themselves into a coma.
• Canadian Equals Hockey Fan: Again, Drum Kingdom in general. Complete with some familiar music and hosts.
• Canon Foreigner: Musshuru, the main antagonist of Movie 9^note An alternative version of the Drum Kingdom arc set after the events of Water 7 and Enies Lobby, is present with Wapol and his crew when they return to Drum Kingdom. The Revolutionaries that Jones requested there manage to take him down before he and his powers cause any trouble.
• Casual Danger Dialogue: In Chapter 19, the ASL brothers discuss the Going Merry as they beat up the Baroque Works Billions. Jones wonders if they even notice that they're being attacked.
• Chekhov's Gun: From the earliest chapters of the story, Jones saved any apple seeds she came across. In Chapter 28, we find out that she was saving them to make cyanide, infuse said cyanide into a cherry pie, and feed said cherry pie to Blackbeard.
• Cliffhanger: Has happened a few times.
  • "Onomatopoeia" ends with Jones passing out after taking an apparently fatal attack from a T-Rex to save Vivi.
  • "Exposition" ends with Baroque Works attacking Alubarna, despite the fact that the crew just defeated Crocodile.
  • "Anagnorisis" ends with...someone showing up and causing most of the Straw Hats to react in horrified shock. Whoever it is sails in a familiar boat and is male, but that's all we know. It's Mihawk.
  • An evil one at the end of "Rising Action," where Blackbeard shows up behind Jones and demands that she join his crew or die.
• Clothing Damage: Jones loses her shirt after absorbing the force of the detonator's explosion in order to prevent it from triggering Crocodile's bomb.
  • Not the first time, either, and by the above example, Nami is lamenting the sheer cost of replacing all the clothes Jones goes through.
• Cooldown Hug: Luffy gives one of these to Robin in Alubarna.
• Cordon Bleugh Chef: Jones, to the point that not even Luffy can handle it. Even so, blown somewhat out of proportion: the first (and only) dish she made used too much ginger, and since then, it’s been a Running Gag that she’s not permitted to cook anything (or at least, not anything that’s made to be eaten). Sanji even mentions it by name.
• Crash-Into Hello: Happens twice in Chapter 23: Usopp into Chopper and Luffy into Galdino (Mr. 3).
• Crazy-Prepared: Ghin appears to be shaping into this as time goes on. Whether it's bandages, spare clothes, or yarn and tuna for a giant sea cat, he always seems to have whatever is needed to minimize the amount of trouble Jones gets herself into.
• Crossover: Jones gets to meet Jeremiah Cross and Soundbite in an omake chapter of This Bites! thanks to the Rainbow Mist.
• Curb-Stomp Battle:
  • In Chapter 2, Jones agrees—against her will—to spar with Zoro. He No Sells every attack she hits him with and then takes her down with ease. A similar occurrence happens with Ghin later.
  • Several in Chapter 23, which features every officer and frontier agent in Baroque Works:
    • Jones vs. Miss Valentine: By way of Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors, Valentine is powerless against Jones. She tries to get around that, but fails.
    • The Unluckies vs. Mr. 11 and Miss Thursday: If their combat abilities and the natural tendency for the frontier agents to fear them wasn't enough, 11 is scared of Mounties, and Thursday is scared of birds.
    • Sabo vs. Mr. 6 and Miss Mother's Day: Taken down in a matter of moments.
    • Luffy vs. Mr. 3: A few punches to the face.
  • Jones vs. Bellamy: One "Hooke's Law" attack to turn his Spring-Spring Powers against him and send him flying.
• Cuteness Overload: Jones's reaction when she sees one of Alabasta's sea cats.
• Cut His Heart Out with a Spoon: Kureha threatens the Straw Hats with some interesting punishments should anything happen to Chopper.
• Death by Adaptation:
  • In the last chapter of the Alabasta arc, Smoker offhandedly mentions that Don Krieg drowned near the Baratie. This was a result of Luffy throwing him in the water instead of the fin.
  • Marshall D. "Blackbeard" Teach. Despite so many things going wrong before and during Jones's plan, the Straw Hats, the Whitebeards, and Sabo succeed in ending his life. And to remove any doubt, the Dark-Dark Fruit reincarnates on the battlefield, falling back into the Whitebeards' hands.
• Deadly Gas: While Jones' ammonia-soaked mask does protect her from Krieg's mustard gas, it also gives her chemical burns and damages her throat and lungs as ammonia is rather dangerous to breathe, especially when mixed with water.
• Defrosting Ice Queen: The rate at which Jones and Luffy manage to break through Robin's façade is astonishing; by the end of the battle against Baroque Works, she's already laughing like Saul.
• Didn't Think This Through: Somehow, it failed to occur to Johnny and Yosaku that the acid spray guns they built would be so powerful. Let me repeat that: acid spray guns.
• Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Weird meta example: Jones frequently flips off her own author when said author pulls what Jones calls "shenanigans." During the Crossover with This Bites!, she also did this to BROB, threatening to punch it in the mouth if she ever met it in person.
• Doing In the Wizard: A peculiar example where this fic applies this to Manga Effects. When Chopper takes a look at Jones's biology, he notes that she's missing entire organ systems that are usual to his world: luminescent eyes, some ocular muscles to change their shape for emoting, fibres to reinforce the skeleton, muscles to properly dislocate one's jaw, and exasperation glands.
• Dragon Rider: Not yet, but implied to be on the way by one of the scenes from the first omake.
• Driven to Suicide: Jones. In the first chapter, she attempts to commit suicide by bleeding out and drowning. This is actually how she ends up in One Piece.
• Drives Like Crazy: Nami, when she uses her Clima-Tact to steal the Ark Maxim in Chapters 34 and 35. Poor Lisa is crying and screaming for almost the entire ride.
• Dumbass Has a Point: Overlapping with Stating the Simple Solution, with the expanded crew that the Straw Hats have when they arrive in Alabasta, Johnny and Yosaku are the ones to ask why they can't split up with half the crew going after Crocodile and the other half going after the rebel army.
• Dumbass No More: After Jones comes within an inch of dying on Little Garden, Luffy is forced to think things through more. Shown earliest in Chapter 18 when he talks to Jones about Lisa: he'd like her to join the crew, but he's worried about the safety of a twelve-year-old girl, having learned the hard way that he can't protect everyone.
• Early-Bird Cameo: Garp shows up at the end of chapter six. Since he doesn't see Luffy and thinks the Straw Hats are a crew of bounty hunters, he helpfully takes some recently captured adversaries off their hands.
• Everyone Has Standards: In Chapter 14, after Mr. 3 mocks the apparent death of one of Luffy's crewmates, he has no issue throwing him into a raging inferno before beating him to a pulp or leaving him to Ghin's tender mercies and coercion...right up until said coercion evolves into outright torture. As soon as Mr. 3 yields, Luffy threatens Ghin to never do it again. Although it's implied that if Mr. 3 had caused the aforementioned apparent death, Luffy may not have been so squeamish.
• Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Enel can't understand why someone with Jones' powers wouldn't want more power and authority.
• Exact Words:
  • Attempted by Jones when she promises to stay with the crew; Luffy calls her out on it the next day and closes the loophole. Her narration mentions that this is not the first time she's done it.
  • Bentham uses this on Jones. When she tells him that stealing her friends' faces will make him see six and a half layers of Hell, he turns around and steals hers, responding that while she warned him about touching her friends, she said nothing about herself.
• Fantastic Racism: Arlong and crew, naturally.
• Fantasy Counterpart Culture: The author seems to apply certain cultures to certain islands, much to Jones's surprise.
  • Drum Island is Rabid hockey fans one and all, including Chopper, beavertails and poutine served, maple syrup for sale, as well as nearly perfect imitations of the national anthem and the hosts of Hockey Night In Canada.
  • While we haven't seen the place yet, Lisa's home, the Fleylin Archipelago, is based on Italy.
  • The Shandians in Skypiea are Aztecs. Aisa mentions Quetzalcoatl, Nanahuatzin, and Ehecatl as gods that they look tom and they play Ullamaliztli in the last chapter of the Skypiea arc. The Straw Hats win through liberal abuse of Devil Fruit powers, which aren't technically against the rules, and Sanji's ridiculous kicking strength.
• Fedora of Asskicking: When purchasing clothing in Loguetown, Jones specifically looks for one of these in order to emulate Indiana Jones.
• Flashback: We see Luffy's fight with Wapol through one of these, from Ghin's point of view.
  • Zoro has several after being hit on the head with a brick during his fight with Mr. One.
  • "Non-Sequitur" has a long one showing Shanks bugging Mihawk for news about the Straw Hats after the swordsman tells him about meeting Luffy.
• Foreign Cuss Word: Jones's go-to curses are 'Merde', 'Tabarnak', and 'Osti d'épais de marde'. Due to Drum Kingdom being the dimensional equivalent of Canada in this fic, the same goes for Chopper.
  • Ace knows some interesting Spanish curses that he directed at Crocodile.
• For Want Of A Nail: This fic is very realistic about how much a simple act could change everything.
  • Not long after she joins, she notices that they're passing by the rock where Johnny and Yosaku are. She is currently on the gun deck, where Luffy and Usopp would be shooting the cannon at the rock to test the weapon in the story. But given that she wanted space, they gave it to her, requiring her to load the cannon herself.
  • Before Nezumi and his goons can dig up Nami’s treasure, Jones incapacitates them with chloramine vapor and then ties them all up. Because they never see her face or any of the other Straw Hats', Luffy doesn’t get a bounty. And likewise, Smoker has no reason to try going after them in Loguetown.
  • In an effort to save Ace and kill Blackbeard, Jones put a cryptic advertisement disguised as a love letter in the paper, asking Ace to meet Luffy in Alabasta and saying that one of his crewmates (her) could help track down the one who hurt Thatch. The thing is, it came out before Blackbeard attacked Thatch. Consequently, Thatch survives, albeit crippled; Ace embarked on his search on Whitebeard's actual orders as opposed to disobeying them; and the old man also ordered three other division commanders, including Marco, after Teach.
  • Thanks to bringing Sabo and Ace along with them, Crocodile is beaten on the first try in his own casino. As a result of that, however, Mr. 1—who had a video feed with Crocodile's base—musters all of the remaining number agents and their partners and leads them in an all-out assault on Alubarna.
  • Due to Jones's advertisement and Thatch's attack, Whitebeard wants her brought to him alive. After clearing up the misunderstanding with Ace, the Straw Hats become semi-allied to the Whitebeard Pirates and even get the right to call their captain 'Pops' like the rest of his crew.
• Friend to All Living Things: Jones has a desire to pet anything she considers cute, and has knowledge from a biology degree to back up that inclination. She manages to make a good impression on Mr. 13 as a result, leading to the Unluckies becoming allies and eventually crewmembers.
• Gadgeteer Genius: Johnny and Yosaku are this; they spend most of their time making odds and ends for spectacular prank devices. As in canon, Usopp is this as well, and he loves talking shop with Johnny and Yosaku when he can.
• Groin Attack: Very common.
  • Jones targets Johnny with one when he first boards the Going Merry. To be fair, he was attacking her and Usopp.
  • When Sanji uses this against Chessmarimo on Drum Island, Ghin is shocked that the cook would be so vicious. Sanji's response alludes to his Dark and Troubled Past:
  Sanji: Because self-entitled asshat noble shitheads like you piss me off.
  • Usopp delivers one of these with his hammer in Chapter 35. YMMV if you feel sorry for the victim, considering that it was Enel.
• Guardian Entity: Starting in Chapter 19, Jones seems to have one of these; whenever she's put under an exceptional amount of pressure, she feels a pair of invisible arms helping her through it, there for a moment and gone the next. She keeps meaning to find out what they are. Though Chapter 27 implies that Toma can somehow sense it.
• Hates Being Touched: One of Jones's many issues.
• Heel Realization: A series of breaking speeches from Jones to the defeated and imprisoned Arlong Pirates sets the stage for this, which Jones knows is the most she can manage.
• Heroic Sacrifice: At the end of Chapter 13, Jones defends Vivi from a T-Rex bite, using her powers to take it down with her, but suffering apparently fatal injuries.
• Hidden Depths:
  • The Unluckies, and how. Mr. 13 and Miss Friday, or rather, Drifter and Geier, apparently joined Baroque Works because they wanted to find an unspecified someone. Then we find out that Drifter is a Mountie^note Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman. Make of that what you will.
  • We get a little expansion on Mihawk as well: he's secretly a cat person and has a phobia of roaches. The green flames on his raft come from boric acid, roach killer.
• How Do I Shot Web?: On top of the Force-Force Fruit requiring physics knowledge and a lot of control, Jones spends a solid chapter thinking that the name refers to an entirely different kind of Force.
• Hypocritical Humor: In the middle of fighting Ace, Crocodile tells him that "Only hotheads and fools waste their breath yelling insults in the middle of a fight."
• I Heard That: From Chapter 34:
  Sanji: Well, I guess if we're gonna have a fire, I can go look for some meat. I'll be back soon- probably before the shitty moss ball.
  Zoro: (faintly, already far away from the camp) I heard that, Shit Cook!
  Sanji: You were supposed to!
• I Just Want to Be Loved: Holy from the Skypiea arc. An odd case, though: he's already loved and taken care of, he's just very insecure due to his massive size:
  Holy: I like being near my family. And Ohm... I get scared when I’m alone. What if no one wants me? I know I’m freakishly huge... So since I’m ten times the size of all the other dogs, I have to be ten times as good a boy so Ohm will keep me.
• Insulted Awake: In Chapter 5, Jones rouses Sabo from the coma he fell into from regaining his memories by appealing to his Big Brother Instinct:
  Jones: Outlook Sabo, if you can hear me, you need to wake up. Monkey D Luffy's in danger of being eaten by a giant crocodile.
  Sabo: Not again! (leaps off the couch and grabs his pipe) Ace, get the… (realizes where he is)
• I Shall Taunt You: In Chapter 23, as in canon, Zoro and Nami end up facing Mr. 1 and Miss Doublefinger. Unlike canon, the pair briefly engages each other, then when they realize that they're just getting in each other's way, Nami exercises her idea to change the playing ground:
  Nami: (to Doublefinger, sticking out her tongue) Your mother was so ugly, she had to give an incubus beer goggles in order to get laid.
  (Doublefinger goes berserk)
• Is It Something You Eat?:
  Luffy: What’s exposition? Can I eat it?
• It's All My Fault: Jones blames her poor planning for Ghin losing his arm.
• It Runs On Nonsenseoleum: This being One Piece, it’s basically a law of the universe, something Jones lampshades but otherwise accepts with surprising ease. Though Zoro talking normally with a sword in his mouth seems to be an exception.
• Joke and Receive: After learning Luffy is Garp's grandson, Sabo's brother, and Dragon's son, Usopp freaks out and asks if Luffy is hiding something else, such as his other brother being the Pirate King's secret son.
• Just Toying with Them: Ghin holds back against Jones during their fight in Chapter 2, using only his bare hands to fend her off, despite it being life or death, because he can tell that she can't do anything to him and he doesn't need more than that. It perturbs Zoro when he hears about that, having practically gone all-out against Jones in their casual spar, save that he used only one sword; it seemed he had forgotten how to train someone far weaker than he.
• Kilroy Was Here: In Chapter 36, while going through Shandora, Robin mentions that she's found Roger's writing all over the ruins, with this being the most frequent message.
• Lady Looks Like a Dude: From time to time Jones gets mistaken for a man. Given that she's gender-fluid, she doesn't really mind.
• Logical Weakness: When Mr. 2 tries to mimic Jones's face, he also replicates her severe need for glasses.
• Long-Lost Relative: Yosaku apparently set out to sea to find his father, who disappeared many years before. No indication thus far as to whom that could be.
• Made of Iron: Jones naturally has high endurance, meaning that despite the fact that a normal human in this world would be Made of Plasticine in that world, she’s not in danger of dying from a simple punch.
• Manchild: Unsurprisingly, Shanks fits this to a T unless he's in the middle of a fight, especially when he's drunk.
• Masquerade: The Straw Hats learn the truth about Jones immediately. But for everyone else, she claims that she's a witch.
• Martial Arts Staff: Having trained with it during her karate lessons, Jones adds the weapon to her arsenal the first chance she gets, though it gets destroyed on Little Garden. It gets replaced at the end of Chiaroscuro... when Ace gives her his old pipe.
• Massive Numbered Siblings: Holy, Ohm's giant dog, has fourteen sisters and seven brothers. And he has both of his parents, four uncles, five aunts, and fifty-six cousins.
  Zoro: (sweatdropping) That's a lot of dogs...
• Mass "Oh, Crap!": Chapter 27's start has almost everyone onboard the Merry reacting in horrified shock to see Mihawk sailing towards them.
• Mathematician's Answer: In Chapter 32:
  Nami: Will you tell us the exchange rate between beri and extol?
  Amazon: Yes.
  (Beat)
  Nami: (sighs) What is the exchange rate?
• Medium Awareness: At the start of Chapter 4, Jones realizes that with everything that’s happened to her, she’s actually within a fanfiction that another version of herself is writing. She is displeased, to put it mildly…but at the same time, she wastes no time in beginning to treat her situation like Deadpool.
• Mood Whiplash: Jones sinks into a lake in her world, wondering if anyone will miss her after slicing twelve red lines in her arms. She then finds herself on the deck of the Merry with Zoro pressing on her chest, forcing her to cough up water.
• More Expendable Than You: Jones says this to Vivi as her apparent last words right after taking a full-body T-Rex bite to save her. Luffy is not happy when he finds out and learns his grandfather's Fist of Love technique just so he can knock some sense into Jones when she recovers. It eventually works.
• Motor Mouth: Miss Merry Christmas is this in canon; Vikingr illustrates it by removing all spaces between her words.
• My Fist Forgives You: The Straw Hat crew does this to Ace after he burns Jones. Even the Going Merry gets in on the action.
• My Friends... and Zoidberg: Sanji will occasionally call for "Ladies, shitheads, and Jones" because he's not sure which category to put her in.
• My God, What Have I Done?: Or, "Mother Isis, what have I done?" Vivi's reaction in Chapter 14 after Jones almost dies saving Vivi from a T-Rex, and the princess realizes that Jones really did mean well.
• Mythology Gag:
  • Every canon member of the Straw Hats speaks a second language corresponding to their real-world nationality (i.e. Luffy speaks Portuguese and Nami speaks Swedish.)
  • Whenever Zoro needs to use a fake name, or someone makes a mistake reading or remembering his name, he ends up being called Zolo.
• Noodle Incident:
  • In Chapter 18, after Johnny and Yosaku pull a glue-and-feather prank on Ghin, Nami flashes back to an incident when someone did the same to Genzo; he hadn't managed to look intimidating through it as Ghin did.
  • Chapter 25 has Jones thinking off how rare it is to have all hands on deck, and briefly thinking of an incident where it started to rain brains, before immediately suppressing the memory.
  • In Chapter 27, whatever Shanks had in mind to force Mihawk to concede to going to take pictures of the Straw Hats.
• No-Sell: During a spar in Chapter 2, Jones kicks Zoro as hard as she can. She only manages to push herself backward.
• Not So Stoic: In Chapter 27, Mihawk bursts out laughing when Jones asks him to pass a riddle on to Shanks, with the sole intent of driving the latter insane guessing what it means.
• Oh, Crap!: A staple of any good One Piece fic.
  • In "Exposition", when Luffy sees Ace unleashing his full fire power against Crocodile's sand, it's enough that for the first time in years, Ace actually scares him.
  • Also in "Exposition", the Cliffhanger ending, seen above.
• Oh, My Gods!: It's never focused on much, but Jones follows an obscure pagan path and occasionally lets out a "By the coils of Patoll," or "By Natrimpe's sweet waters."
• Older Than They Look: Jones is 24, but strangers tend to think she’s younger than the 17-19 crew. This is quite often exasperating for her.
• One Degree of Separation: In chapter 34, Zoro mentions that during his bounty hunting days, a noble kid in Goa Kingdom once hired him to kill someone; namely, a man who was raging about a noble kid planning to seduce the princess and kill the king. He also mentions that the kid's name reminded him of beer. This is referring to Sterry, Sabo's stepbrother and, post-skip, king of Goa after marrying the princess and the "mysterious" deaths of the king and heir.
• O.O.C. Is Serious Business: A triple example in Chapter 29, "Rising Action". Sanji finds that Jones wants to poison food, enraging him enough that he actually kicks her. When she explains exactly why she shocks Sanji when she actually starts crying. Between that and the reasoning behind it, Sanji ultimately concedes, just that once, to infuse cyanide into a cherry pie.
• Panty Thief: In Chapter 24, a drunk Jones finds her way into Smoker's room, absconds with his underwear, and hangs them at the top of a flagpole in Alubarna. Needless to say, the man is furious, complete with Glowing Eyes of Doom.
• Person as Verb: After waking up on the Going Merry, no-longer-amnesiac Sabo states that he has the Grandpa Garp of all headaches.
• Pet the Dog:
  • The moment it becomes clear that Jones is successfully persuading Daz Bones to follow his dreams is an almost literal picture of this trope. You know, aside from the fact that he's petting a baby crocodile rather than a puppy.
  • For all that Ohm is Enel's strongest and most ruthless Co-Dragon, he's apparently a literal example of this trope for his massive dog, Holy:
  Holy: Ohm is a good master. He brushes me every morning and feeds me lots of yummy treats and he built a huuuuuuge doghouse for me by his normal kennels so I can sleep near my family.
• Porky Pig Pronunciation: Seems to be a Running Gag for Luffy to do this whenever he tries to say big words...and sometimes not-so-big words, too.
• Public Secret Message: The ad Jones puts in the paper to make sure Ace still knows to meet them in Alabasta despite Luffy's lack of a wanted poster.
• Pun: While walking in Alabasta, Jones wonders if being a witch in a desert makes her a sandwich.
• Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: To Dragon, as the Straw Hats are leaving Loguetown-
  Luffy: Put. Her. Down.
  • And to Ace when he attacks Jones in Alabasta-
  Luffy: GET! OFF! MY! WITCH!
• Rage Against the Heavens: The instant she realizes that she’s in a fanfiction, she starts chastising the one with the keyboard, and continues to do so regularly, heedless of who is around her.
• Red Eyes, Take Warning: A frequent occurrence when Ghin gets angry.
• Right Behind Me: Dragon pulls this as the Straw Hats are leaving Loguetown, while Jones is confirming Luffy's parentage to the crew and Sabo is freaking out.
• Rousseau Was Right: When Lisa uses her Rainbow of Dreams on the number agents of Baroque Works, Vivi comes to this conclusion about them; all of them had perfectly innocuous dreams, and she elects to give everyone save for Crocodile and 11 (who had an outstanding warrant in another country) a chance to claim their dreams another way by helping to rebuild Alabasta.
• Secret-Keeper: Of an interesting sort: the Straw Hats and the Red-Haired Pirates are the only ones who know about Mihawk's roach phobia.
• Sentient Vehicle: Some of the occurrences on the Going Merry are just a little too coincidental for her not to be developing into this.
• Shoulder-Sized Dragon: Ruatha's current form

• Shown Their Work: Vikingr uses realistic science explanations fairly frequently, and even appears to have actually looked up the correct Egyptian hieroglyph for "game."
• Signature Laugh: Being One Piece, there are naturally a lot of these. Additions to canon seen so far include-

  • Sabo: Shishishishishi! (Just like Luffy; Ace comments on this)

  • Ace laughs like Garp in Chapter 24, scaring his brother and himself.

• Smart Ball: Luffy picked this up long enough to realize that Miss All Sunday, AKA Nico Robin, was a future member of his crew. He figures this out by looking back on her interactions with Jones.
• Spared by the Adaptation: Thatch is alive. Unable to walk because of damage to his spine, but alive.
• Speak in Unison: Johnny and Yosaku sometimes do this.
• Spell My Name With An S: Though 'Gin' is noted to be the canon spelling, Jones mentally revises that to 'Ghin' to avoid messing up the pronunciation. Ghin, being illiterate, just goes with it.
• Spit Take: Upon hearing that Marco, Haruta, and Namur are also looking for Blackbeard, and Ace is acting on Whitebeard's orders, Jones is so shocked that she specifically takes a drink in order to perform one of these, despite noting the waste of water.
• Stealth Pun: Since some older cultures and texts refer to dragons as worms, this probably counts...
  Jones: He'd tell Dragon, and I don't want to deal with that can of worms yet.
  • Johnny's "Base Drops!" attack.
• Stepford Smiler: Jones. Though some might find this questionable-in one of the Baratie chapters, she outright quotes Elsa from Frozen and put what she describes as a server's smile to hide her anxiety.
  Jones's Narration: Taking a deep breath, I pasted an unfortunately familiar expression on my face. Fake smile, server's smile. Don't let them in; don't let them see. Be the good girl you always have to be. Conceal- don't feel. Put on a show. Make one wrong move and everyone will know. "It- it's fine. I've done this before; I can handle it."
• Super-Scream: In Chapter 26, Ruatha develops a sonic scream, finally giving him a formidable weapon in combat.
• Taking the Bullet: At the end of Chapter 13, "Onomatopoeia", Jones throws herself in front of Vivi to save her from a T-Rex mauling her with its fangs.
  • In Chapter 23, "Chorus," Yosaku shoves Johnny out of the way when Mr. 5 tries to blow him up.
  • In Chapter 30, "Chiaroscuro," Ghin saves Jones's life from Blackbeard, and loses his arm as a result.
• Taking You with Me: After the aforementioned Taking the Bullet, Jones is critically injured, and she suspects that she'll die. With no intention of going down alone, she reflects the force from the bite she just received back into the T-Rex's skull, and one gore-soaked instant later, it's missing its head.
• Talking Your Way Out: Thanks to Jones sowing seeds of favor with Bentham when they meet him at sea and the ASL brothers defeating Crocodile, Sanji manages to convince him partway through their fight to surrender in hopes of learning Ivankov's location from Jones.
• Theme Naming: The chapter titles, which are named after words that carry a certain meaning for that specific chapter.
• "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Jones gives a few of these throughout the story.
  • During the fight between Luffy and Arlong, she calls him out on how Fisher Tiger would be ashamed of him.
  • In Alubarna's celebratory gala, her talk with Smoker devolves into an epic one of these.
  • Jones gives one of these to Blackbeard...in the last moments of his life.
• There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Jones says this exact phrase after she tells Johnny and Yosaku to start making landmines in preparation for their battle against Blackbeard.
• This Cannot Be!: In Chapter 14, despite the fact that he's in the middle of a raging inferno that's making it impossible to use his powers, Mr. 3 still has this reaction before Luffy finishes him off.
• Three-Point Landing: Done and immediately called out by Jones during the raid on Rain Dinners.
• Throwing Your Sword Always Works: As in canon, Johnny and Yosaku toss their swords to Zoro. Jones lampshades the danger and impracticality of it all.
• Training from Hell: Jones's self-imposed challenge in order to train herself to get stronger.
• Tranquil Fury: Mihawk utilizes this in Chapter 27 when he catches Johnny messing with his boat. The narration explicitly says, "I've never heard someone's voice sound so dangerous without being raised as when Mihawk had to repeat his question."
• True Companions: The Straw Hats. Jones even lampshades this in Chapter 2.
  • Luffy orders her to live, at that. Jones comments that this is reminiscent of what the Straw Hats told Robin, showing that they really do see her as a friend. Or at the barest minimum, that they want to.
  • Nami lampshades it as well, in Chapter 15:
  "Loyalty before reason - that's the Straw Hat way. And as aggravating as it can be sometimes, I don't think any of us really regret it."
• Undressing the Unconscious: Chopper and Kureha cut Jones' clothes off in order to treat her wounds, leaving her in just her underpants when she eventually wakes up. As Chopper points out when she expresses her displeasure at the situation, her clothes were so shredded and bloodstained that they weren't wearable anymore anyway.
• Unstoppable Rage:
  • Jones has a tendency to fly into one of these when emotions are running high and someone hits her Berserk Button.
    • In Chapter 7, when Nelson's men start killing some of the dragons and some of their blood lands on Jones, she goes into a literal blind rage, unable to perceive anything but a red and black haze and the urge to Attack! Attack! Attack! until someone lands a cutlass strike on her chest.
    • In Chapter 30, she goes into one against the Blackbeard Pirates after Ghin loses an arm saving her life.
    • A more comical example in Chapter 36, when she finds out that the Shandians had access to rubber all along, using it in their sports balls. Wyper scathingly retorts that they never considered using one of their toys to attack Eneru when Dials and spears didn't work.
  • In Chapter 32, the Straw Hats try paying Amazon to avoid trouble, but much to Nami's trauma, they don't have enough for the whole crew. When they reach Angel Island, they find out that Upper Yard — the place where they need to go to meet Jones and Usopp — is where criminals are sent. Nami goes berserk.
• Unreliable Narrator: Despite being the name of the first chapter, it's hard to tell if Jones is one of these or not. She seems to relate most things fairly accurately, but every once in a while she blatantly flaunts that she's not telling us everything. Case in point...
  Jones: Hey! I resent that! I can keep secrets if I wanna- still haven't told anyone what I'm planning to try and save the fireball, not even the readers. (beat) Sh… If I think too loudly, they'll know.
• Watch Out for That Tree!: In Chapter 13, Jones uses her powers to skate through the Little Garden jungle instead of just running. She references the trope namer.
• What the Hell, Hero?:
  • The Straw Hat Pirates are quite upset with Ace for assaulting Jones without having the slightest proof she was ill-intentioned towards Luffy.
  • After the events on Jaya, the rest of the crew calls out Jones' habit of keeping them in the dark about her plans until the last minute.
  • While on Skypiea, Robin snaps at Sanji over how condescending his objectification of women is.
• When All You Have Is a Hammer…: Jones is distinctly disappointed that Miss Valentine only uses her power to crush others, especially since it's completely worthless against her, citing that Devil Fruits are all about creativity to make them as broken as possible with whatever knowledge, ideas, or even puns you can think of.
• Who's on First?: While Jones is infiltrating Smoker's ship...
  Marine: Who's there?
  Jones: Sesehihihihihi! Silly marine! Who's not here; Who's on first!
• Your Head A-Splode: T-Rex bites Jones. Jones absorbs the force. Jones reflects the force. Goodbye, T-Rex.
• Your Mom: Nami's insult to Miss Doublefinger in Chapter 23.
