The Zen'in Clan (Major Spoilers)

In General

The Zen'in Clan

One of the Big Three sorcerer families, alongside the Kamo and Gojo clans, and the largest we've seen so far. The twins Maki and Mai are from the clan, though they are shunned for being considered a bad omen, along with Maki being Heavenly Restricted and unable to use cursed energy.

After an unseen falling-out with the rest of the clan, Toji Zen'in left and became a freelance mercenary, though not before making an undisclosed deal with the clan Head. He later had a son Megumi, and married a woman with a daughter Tsumiki. Toji then took his wife's surname Fushiguro. Megumi is still considered a Zen'in by others in-story, much to his reluctance.

The clan was initially headed in the present by Naobito Zen'in. However, his death caused by injuries sustained during the Shibuya Incident causes a Succession Crisis: Naoya Zen'in, presumed to be next in line to become the Head, discovers that due to certain circumstances, Megumi is to be the clan leader instead^*As part of a deal between Naobito and Toji in case Satoru Gojo was to be killed or incapacitated in any way, Megumi became the Head. Immediately this becomes a conflict between Naoya along with the majority of the clan, versus Megumi, with the aforementioned twins by his side^*Maki initially wished to become Head herself, and Megumi tried to hand over the title to her. That said, she refuses for her sister's sake.

• Arc Villain: Naoya, Ogi and Jinichi serve as triumvirate example during the Perfect Preparation Arc, through their plan to maintain control of the clan by framing the rightful heir Megumi, as a traitor, and murdering Maki and Mai.
• Asshole Victim: Minus Naobito, all of the clan were a bunch of arrogant scumbags who only care about themselves. When Maki butchered the whole clan it's hard to feel bad for the bastards.
• Big, Screwed-Up Family: Hoo boy. When their description is composed entirely of their screw-ups, you know it's that bad. More details can be found in each character's folder, and they do not help.
• Hate Sink: It really says a lot when a complete Jerkass like Naobito is the most fair and reasonable of the clan's top members.
• Heir Club for Men: Only males of the family are allowed to become clan head, as shown when Naobito's daughter is quickly dismissed as a possible successor.
• Irony: For all the clan's arrogance, in general the "worthless" or Black Sheep of the clan typically end up being being more capable and powerful than the more traditional members. So far we got:
  • Toji was indisputably one of the most badass members the clan has ever produced, a warrior of such unmatched skill that he could pose a serious threat to the likes of Gojo Satoru and exorcise a Special-Grade Curse in a few seconds.
  • Megumi inherited the Ten Shadows Technique, the most valued sorcery in the whole clan, to such a degree that it alone causes him to be declared the next heir of the clan over the more traditional members.
  • Maki's awakened potential, despite initially being considered to be a complete failure for her lack of curse energy and her being female making her even less valued to the clan, allowed her to become so powerful that she freaks Oji out with her presence reminding him of Toji and cuts him down with ridiculous ease as well.
  • Jinichi, Ogi, and Naoya, upon being introduced, each indicate the belief that the clan would be best served with themselves as the Clan Head following Naobito's death, and even beforehand. Scant weeks after his passing and his will naming Megumi as the Clan head, their various schemes to usurp and elevate the Zen'in Clan's power and standing have resulted in the decimation of the clan, alongside their own deaths. If they had followed Naobito's will and considered cooperation or neutrality towards Megumi and Maki, the Clan was poised to prosper, but by putting self-interest above the greater good, they cause the deaths of their entire family.
  • Though not outright stated, it's hinted that many of the clan's members, despite upholding their belief that Cursed Energy and techniques make them inherently superior to others, were well aware that Toji Fushiguro, who utterly lacked either, was far superior to any of them as a member of the Jujutsu world. In fact, it's hinted that their outright refusal to accept this fact is why they consistently bullied, ostracized, and belittled Maki, another Heavenly Restricted, to prove their superiority. It turns out that Maki was only under a partial Heavenly Restriction her whole life: due to Cursed Techniques regarding identical twins as the same person, as long as Maki's sister Mai was around, her abilities were never on par with Toji's. Upon Mai's death, Maki's full potential awakens, and she proceeds to make the clan regret their mistreatment of her. Ranta even notes that Toji had refrained from wiping out their clan on a whim, and Maki, spurred by Mai to destroy the clan, has no such inhibitions.
• Karmic Death: The Heir Club for Men that values Cursed Techniques over individual skill or training gets utterly decimated by the female Heavenly Restricted member that wanted to be clan head with her physical skills alone, in the process utterly stomping all over their beliefs and imagined superiority, to which many of the members express disbelief before they perish. It also helps that Megumi, the coveted and gifted male heir, wanted nothing to do with the Zen'in clan in the first place and unflinchingly backs Maki up every step of the way.
• Leave No Survivors:
  • There were members of the Zen'in clan who were absent from the estate the day Maki exterminated their members. The same sentence that reveals this confirms she tracked them all down and killed every last one to ensure the clan's complete destruction.
  • It's also implied to be invoked by Maki and Mai's mother. She initially seems to be panicked by Maki's murder of the entire clan, even begging pathetically for her life, but afterwards, while bleeding out from Maki slashing her throat, her last actions are to track down Naoya and make sure he's dead with an expression of quiet acceptance on her face. Her dying thoughts of being glad she gave birth to her daughters imply her earlier behaviour was an act to make it easier for Maki to kill her without regret, and she expires satisfied that the Zen'in clan is no more.
• Mook Horror Show: What Maki inflicts on them once she fully unlocks her potential as a Heavenly Restricted thanks to Mai's death. She kills arguably the strongest member of the clan besides Naoya in a single blow as her opening move, and it only takes her a single chapter to reduce one of the largest Jujutsu Clans to just Naoya by herself.
• The Purge: Mai's Last Request to Maki was for her twin to 'Destroy Everything', aware that upon her passing Maki's full potential as a Heavenly Restricted would awaken and she'd gain physical abilities on par with Toji Fushiguro. Maki starts by killing her Archnemesis Dad in a single move, and spends the following chapter reducing the entire fighting forces of the Zen'in clan down to just Naoya. Unbeknownst to Maki, her mortally wounded mother makes sure the job is finished with him, and the narration afterwards confirms Maki tracked down all clans members absent that day and made sure they followed suit.
• Superpowerful Genetics: There are currently two known Cursed Techniques that are inherited within the family's bloodline, those being the Ten Shadows Technique and Projection Sorcery. The Ten Shadows Technique is valued far more than Projection Sorcery, as Megumi is considered the proper heir to the clan due to possessing the technique. Projection Sorcery is revealed to be a new Cursed Technique developed by Naobito during his lifetime, later inherited by his son.

Cursed Technique: Projection Sorcery

A Special Grade 1 sorcerer, the 26th Head of House Zen'in. A careless old man who looks down on others and would rather drink than fight. When Maki left the Zen'in Clan and vowed to become its head when she returned, he promised to make her and her sister, Mai's, life hell as a result.

His Cursed Technique, Projection Sorcery, allows him to break down one second into 24 "frames" that he can trace as a predetermined set of motion, affecting himself and anything within his field of view. Enemies touched by his palm while the technique is active will have to abide by the same rule of only having 24 movements in that second or they will become stuck in a two-dimensional frame until the second has passed, effectively giving Naobito a free hit.

• The Alcoholic: Shown to love drinking, to the point that he initially neglects the curses they're supposed to be fighting in order to do so.
• An Arm and a Leg: Dagon's shikigami rip off his right arm. Naobito seems more irritated by it then anything.
• Cool Old Guy: He may come off as a lazy drunk, but Naobito is quick, strong, rightfully confident in himself and surprisingly passionate about the art of animation. He even loses an arm and only seems mildly annoyed by it.
• Counterspell: He can use the Falling Blossom Emotion, a secret art passed down within the Zen'in clan that can counter the usage of Domain Expansion. It works similarly to the Simple Domain and Domain Amplification techniques by surrounding his body in cursed energy, though it differs by having his cursed energy shoot out to defensively protect himself from the otherwise unblockable attacks used within a Domain. It requires a massive amount of concentration and can still be overwhelmed by a continuous assault, however.
• Flash Step: Traveling within the 24 frames of his technique while it is active moves him at speeds that give the impression of teleportation. It's thanks to this that he's widely regarded as the second-fastest Sorcerer alive, second only to Gojo himself.
• Good All Along: Downplayed. He's a sexist creep who looks down on women and those with low cursed energy, spitefully punished Mai for Maki leaving the clan and blocked Maki from ever being promoted to a higher grade, doesn't care when Satoru Gojo is sealed and was more concerned with drinking than he was saving lives during Shibuya. However, it turns out Naobito was one of the nicer elders of the Zen'in clan and the one keeping the actual immoral bastards from killing whoever they don't like. The moment he expires, his son Naoya immediately tries to kill Yuji and Megumi so he can take power uncontested. Then Ogi finally makes his move to murder Maki and Mai in retaliation for the twins "ruining his life."
• Grumpy Old Man: He can be spirited sometimes, but he has shades of this, namely when talking to Dagon about animation.
  Naobito: These days, it's all about resolution and wanting to increase framerate. 4K this and 60 FPS that. Don't you find it so unrefined?!
• Jerkass: He treats his niece Maki poorly and is responsible for preventing her from rising in the ranks as a jujutsu sorcerer. Even on the severely important mission to rescue Gojo, he lazes around while his teammates do the fighting, and says that he wouldn't mind letting things be.
• Killed Offscreen: Stated to have died from the injuries he received from Jogo in the Shibuya Incident.
• Let's Get Dangerous!: He spends the majority of the Shibuya Incident hanging back and drinking while leaving all the work in dispatching curses to Maki. It's only when his group encounters Dagon, one of the Special Grade Disaster Curses, that he shows off his Cursed Technique and proves he earned his status as both a Special Grade 1 sorcerer and the Head of one of the Big Three jujutsu families.
• A Lighter Shade of Black: He's a lazy, cruel, sexist drunkard who enforces the clan's terrible practices, made Mai's life hell to spite Maki for leaving the family and prevented Maki's promotion as a jujutsu sorcerer because the Zen'in family already disowned her, but following his death, it's revealed he was the reasonable member of the family, being at the bare minimum willing to put his life on the line to protect the world. His son, Naoya, is willing to launch a coup despite the world being thrown into chaos and his brother, Ogi, is more than willing to murder his daughters to increase his standing.
• Limited Animation: Naobito's technique invokes this on himself. He can trace a set of movements for his body to carry out over the course of 24 frames of animation per second. The end result is that he can move startlingly fast, and the lack of "in-betweens" gives the impression that he's teleporting.
• Logical Weakness: The set of motion he plans out for his technique cannot excessively defy the laws of physics or deviate once he starts moving, doing so will cause Naobito himself to be frozen and trapped for one second.
• Major Injury Underreaction: After he loses an arm fighting Dagon, Naobito mocks him for only taking "one measly arm", but states that it was a 71 year-old arm, and that taking it will cost Dagon.
• Misery Builds Character: It's hinted that his treatment of Maki, and blocking her advancement through the Jujutsu ranks, was partially due to a belief in this, testing to see if she had to willpower to overcome any hardships life placed in her way, as a test to see if she actually had what it took to become clan head in the end.
• Oh, Crap!: Has this reaction to Toji Fushiguro's sudden entrance into Dagon's Domain, being the only sorcerer present who is aware of the incredible danger that he brings.
• Old Master: Despite his advanced age, Naobito remains an exceptionally strong sorcerer. Easily able to keep pace with Grade 1 Curses and holding his own against a Special Grade.
• Pet the Dog: Despite his constant badmouthing of Maki, he still goes out of his way to protect her from a lethal attack from Dagon, showing that he does care about her deep down.
• Phantom-Zone Picture: Enemies affected by his technique are trapped for one second within a two-dimensional "frame" resembling a thin pane of glass that he can shatter for a free attack.
• Revenge by Proxy: When Maki leaves the Zen'in Clan, Naobito promises to make Mai's life hell in retribution, a promise he keeps. Mai says she was forced to become a jujutsu sorcerer despite not wanting to risk her life because the Zen'in Clan pressured her into it.
• Smug Super: Naobito is one of the strongest sorcerers around and he knows it, rubbing it in the face of friend and foe alike in battle.
• Succession Crisis: Naobito is Killed Offscreen following the Shibuya arc, after he succumbs to the burn injuries he suffered from Jogo. This creates a situation where his relatives must declare the new head of the Zen'in clan, which predictably causes dissent among the arrogant members of the family.
• Super-Speed: Has this, seemingly as a side effect of his technique. Because he can "plan" his body's movements through 24 "frames" of animation, he can essentially teleport anywhere within his field of view over the course of a second. He is noted to be the fastest Jujutsu sorcerer discounting Gojo, with his son who shares his Technique immediately taking that title after Naobito bites the bullet from his injuries after the Shibuya Incident.
• Token Good Teammate: Whilst his initial appearances seemed to mark him out as a major sexist jackass and the main cause of the hassles Maki and Mai had to face growing up, upon his death, and with the reveal of what the rest of the Zen'in clan is like, it becomes apparent that he was the most reasonable and cooperative of them, even putting the clan's resources under Megumi's care in case of a major crisis, and making the powerful sorcerer-in-training the next clan head after himself. Compare this to Naoya, who instantly plots to kill Megumi in the midst of a large-scale emergency for 'getting in his way', or Ogi, who stole the cursed weapons from the Zen'in vault to ambush his daughters and plotted to frame and execute Megumi, then his superior, for treason. Despite blocking her advancement through the Jujutsu ranks, and promising to make Mai's life harder, Naobito doesn't express any dissatisfaction with fighting alongside Maki in the Shibuya incident, and feels content to leave the lion's share of the clean-up work to her and Nanami, showing a certain faith in her abilities, only stepping in when they face a threat that requires his aid. In contrast, Naoya and Ogi outright refuse to accept that Maki could ever have any worth, and heap general contempt towards her mere existence.

Cursed Technique: Projection Sorcery

"Power is mass and speed!!"

A Special Grade 1 sorcerer, son of Naobito Zen'in and next in line to become the 27th Head of House Zen'in. He is also the captain of the Hei Unit, the Zen'in Clan's elite unit of powerful sorcerers.

His Cursed Technique, Projection Sorcery, is the same as his father's, allowing him to plan a set of 24 motions within his field of view for himself that lasts one second, which generally manifests as bursts of Flash Step and Super-Speed. Enemies touched while it is active will be frozen if they do not abide by the technique's rule of only having 24 movements in one second.

• Achilles' Heel: His new Cursed form gains greater speed by sucking in air through an inlet valve on his back and pressurising the air as propulsion through cursed energy manipulation. Accordingly, clogging the inlets can interfere with his speed, and since Naoya has made a binding vow that increases his toughness when accelerating, this renders him vulnerable and nullifies his greatest advantage. Noritoshi blowing his blood into the inlet forces Naoya to slow down when ramming him at high speeds.
• Arch-Enemy: To Maki, having demeaned her for years and gloating over her inability to see cursed energy. Once she humiliates the Zen'in clan and decimates them all, leading to his death, he's also spurred to come Back from the Dead as a Cursed Spirit simply so he can have his revenge on her.
• Back from the Dead: After a fashion. He actually did wholly die as a human being thanks to Maki's mother stabbing him in the back, but his intense resentment over his clan’s humiliating destruction, not to mention the fact that he wasn't killed by either a wielder of Cursed Energy or a Cursed Weapon, allowed him to return to life as a Cursed Spirit, seemingly only to get revenge on Maki and avenge himself. Despite his monstrous appearance, his personality is identical to how he was in life because he was defined entirely by negative emotions.
• Big Bad Wannabe: His aspiration to take over the Zen'in Clan, one of the Big Three Families of the jujutsu world, would normally mark him as a major threat, but by the time he attempts to take control, Kenjaku has already started the Culling Games and his more existentially threatening plan makes Naoya's ambitions look like small potatoes. He ends up being little more than a recurring annoyance until Maki takes him out.
• Big Brother Bully: He's actually Maki's cousin and ten years older than her, but he still filled the role of an older family member close to Maki's generation who tormented her growing up. When he sees her again for the first time after Shibuya, he asks if he should bully her like he used to.
• Book Ends: He's introduced talking to Maki and Mai's mother on his way to hear the reading of his father's will, espousing his views on women by saying that any woman who couldn't properly support a man should get stabbed in the back and die. Once he's left defenseless in the aftermath of Maki's rampage, he ends up staggering into the same room where they held the will reading, whereupon Maki's mother approaches him from behind and finishes him off, stabbing him in the back with a kitchen knife. Happens again after he returns as a Cursed Spirit, as Maki ultimately finishes him off for good by stabbing him in the back before bisecting him vertically.
• Bullying a Dragon: He's spent years demeaning Maki, saying that the only thing good about her was her looks. He continues to do so after Mai's death results in Maki becoming as strong as Toji and also throws her into a homicidal rage against the clan and repeatedly calls her an imposter instead of Toji's successor. Maki knocks him out cold as soon as she uses her heightened senses to figure out how to get around his Cursed Technique and get a good hit in.
• Came Back Strong: As a Cursed Spirit Naoya not only retains the Cursed Technique that he possessed in life, but his new inhuman anatomy lends him far greater size and toughness, elevating him from a Fragile Speedster who quickly folded the moment his opponent managed to tag him to a Lightning Bruiser. The same anatomy has also made him significantly faster despite his newfound bulk, due to possessing features like biological jet engines.
• Child Prodigy: He was the only one of Naobito's children to inherit his Cursed Technique and as a child was praised by his family, who called him a genius and believed him to be a shoe-in as his father's successor. To say this made Naoya egotistical would be an understatement.
• Combat Pragmatist: He conceals a large knife to use in close quarters for a surprise attack. He admonishes his family members for their criticisms of Toji for using similar weaponry and tactics depite their reliance on swords.
• Death by Irony: TWICE. Irony first strikes when he's stabbed by Maki's mother In the Back, and he dies in the Zen'in family's kitchen, calling back to his earlier Stay in the Kitchen comment. And if that wasn't enough, he's Brought Back From The Dead as a cursed spirit, and irony strikes AGAIN when his domain expansion has no effect on Maki, another woman, thanks to having no cursed energy left in her body.
• Disappointing Older Sibling: Naoya feels this way about all his older brothers. He confesses to Choso that he hates all his brothers, as he sees no point in elder brothers who are inferior to their little brother, even saying his brothers should just hang themselves. When Choso suggests it's possible Naoya became strong by watching his brothers and learning from their mistakes, Naoya considers the idea nauseatingly absurd.
• Even Evil Has Standards: Despite all of his horrendous qualities, Naoya is the only member of the Zen'in clan to show any sympathy towards Toji Fushiguro. He bluntly states that Toji would have been better off alive instead of Jinichi, and is revealed to despise his family for the blatant hypocrisy regarding their treatment of Toji. His feelings towards Toji don't extend to his son, however, or Maki after she becomes Toji's successor, instead insisting she's an imposter.
• Flash Step: He appears to teleport when moving due to the effects of his technique.
• Gathering Steam: His Super-Speed has a set limit when first activating Projection Sorcery, but can increase exponentially with prolonged use. This also increases the strength of his attacks accordingly.
• Glass Cannon: Like his father he's ludicrously fast and strong, to the point where he could bully Maki when they were younger, but he's not any tougher than anyone else reinforcing their body with cursed energy. He's almost immediately put down by Choso's poisonous blood and requires help from Yuta's healing technique to survive, and Maki ends up beating him in a single punch, though she took a massive beating while figuring out his technique. When he returns as a cursed spirit and successfully emerges from his Cursed Womb, his new form is practically the epitome of this, even if it's also significantly tougher than his old human body. Noritoshi notes that his armour plating is significantly less tough than Hanami's was, and theorises that he has made a binding vow to increase his toughness when accelerating his speed in his new cursed form so the G-forces don't destroy him, at the cost of being more fragile than other spirits the rest of the time. Thus when in motion he's a lighting-fast destructive projectile that can reach speeds of mach 3 and causes immense damage via the shockwaves produced, but when not accelerating he has to dodge attacks like normal.
• Has a Type: According to Maki, he's the kind of guy who can only recognize a woman by their ass, never their face.
• Hate Sink: An arrogant, sexist prick who cares about absolutely nothing but his own advancement up the ladder of Jujutsu Society. Noritoshi is taken aback at how much of his original ego he retained after becoming a cursed spirit, the implication being that he was already so cruel and petty as a living human that transforming into a monster literally made from negative emotion had a minimal impact on his psyche.
• Hated by All: Everyone who knows Naoya's real personality despises him. He's hated by Maki and Mai who he's abused throughout their lives, hated by Ogi and Jinichi even as they begrudgingly work together to prevent Megumi from becoming the new clan head, and a Vol. 17 extra shows the Kukuru Unit reviewing the Hei giving Naoya zero stars, calling him: scum, poop, and poop scum.
• Hero-Worshipper: The first time he went to meet his cousin, he went there thinking a man completely without Cursed Energy or a Technique would be pathetic, only to be passed by like he was nothing by Toji and instantly became the only member of his clan who never looked down upon Toji, instead seeing his cousin as the epitome of manhood and power. Even in official meetings where a cordial tone would be expected, he expresses open disgust for his relatives's abuse of Toji and compares them negatively to him, making them take swings at him in anger.
• In the Back: After being left near death by Maki and unable to use his cursed energy, he is stabbed in the back by Maki's mother as he attempts to crawl away, and again as a Cursed Spirit before Maki cleaves his handsome face in half.
• Irony:
  • He looked down upon and insulted Maki for her inability to used cursed energy, saying that her face was her only good point and mocks her looks after she's badly scarred. Maki ultimately has the last laugh when she leaves him with half his face caved in and helpless in the wake of Mai's death and her becoming as powerful as Toji. Her mother then finishes him off by stabbing him in the back — a fate he proposed for any woman who couldn't properly support a man. He doesn't get the dignity of being finished off by any named individual or powerful curse, something that clearly breaks him as he passes away.
  • He's one of the foremost contenders to become clan head of the Zen'in clan, a long-lived clan of sorcerers who have dedicated themselves to killing Cursed Spirits and honing their techniques to that effect. After the clan's decimation at Maki's hands, he's about the sole remaining example of their legacy, as a Cursed Spirit himself. Furthermore, his cursed technique seems to have been amplified by his transformation into a spirit, becoming even faster and strong enough to pressure Maki, even after her Heavenly Restriction has become fully unlocked, something he could never have achieved on his own as a human being, no matter how hard he trained.
• It's All About Me: Upon learning of his father's death, his first reaction is to grin at the prospect of becoming the next clan head rather than mourn the loss for even a moment.
• Jerkass Has a Point: He's got several due to being generally Too Clever by Half despite being a fairly heinous human being. He's the only person in the Zen'in clan who thought highly of Toji, to the point where he rubs Toji's superiority into his brothers' faces when the man is basically a clan-wide taboo.
• Karmic Death: His first appearance has him saying that 'any woman who can't walk three steps behind a man should get stabbed in the back and die' to Maki and Mai's mother whilst walking to meet Ogi and Jinichi. He initially survives Maki's rampage, but Maki's mother, left mortally wounded by her daughter, makes sure he dies with the rest of the clan, approaching him from behind and stabbing him in the back with a knife whilst he's unable to defend himself. It even appears to happen in the same room where they held the will-reading. Unfortunately, said method of death meant that he wasn't killed by somebody with a Cursed Weapon or Cursed Energy, allowing him to resurrect himself as a Cursed Spirit out of his grudge with Maki and go after her in the Culling Game.
• Lack of Empathy: Naoya looks down on everyone for being weaker than him and doesn't even have empathy for his own family. He grins when he hears his father passed away because he thinks it means he'll become clan head, he's genuinely confused why Choso would think he'd ever care about his brothers when they're all weaklings, and when Maki massacres everyone on the Zen'in Clan estate, Naoya doesn't even bat an eye that the majority of the clan he wants to lead has been killed. Surprisingly, the only person Naoya has empathy for was Toji Fushiguro, who he believed was wronged by the clan, but even then it has more to do with respecting his strength than Toji as a person since Naoya is willing to murder Toji's son, Megumi, for his own advancement.
• Limited Animation: How his inherited technique works, with its mechanics giving him Super-Speed that appears like choppy animation that lacks "in-between" frames.
• Make It Look Like an Accident: After learning that Megumi is to become the next clan head, Naoya devises a scheme to kill him along with Yuji, using the chaotic situation in Tokyo as a cover up to hide his actions.
• Manipulative Bastard: He uses his quick wits to immediately get on Yuta's good side by bringing up his relation to Maki, creating the illusion of being close despite his true feelings towards her.
• Murder Is the Best Solution: Clearly believes so, as his first thought upon being informed that Megumi would be made clan head is to murder him and take the position for himself.
• Phantom-Zone Picture: Enemies he touches will be frozen for one second in a two-dimensional "frame" if they do not abide by his technique's rules, leaving them open for an attack. Naoya uses this in combination with his Super-Speed to overwhelm Choso when they fight. His Cursed Spirit form's Domain Expansion uses this to cut enemies apart at the cellular level.
• Politically Incorrect Villain: Naoya embodies the archaic viewpoints posited by some of the more traditional clans, specifically the chauvinistic and demeaning attitudes towards women prevalent within Maki and Mai's backstory. He believes that a woman's only value in life is to support her husband, and coldly judges the worth of the women in his clan based on their appearance and obedience. He likes Mai a lot more than Maki entirely because Mai has the bigger tits and the fatter ass while also being more "obedient".
• Pragmatic Villainy: He easily discovers Yuji's location thanks to the speed of his cursed technique, but decides not to kill him despite his execution order being renewed, due to needing him for his plot to kill Megumi.
• Smug Super: He has a very high opinion of himself due to his great strength and handsome looks, and feels the need to remind others of his superiority. He can back up his arrogance too, being both quick-witted and resourceful and also supremely fast, to the point where he can manhandle Choso and later Maki.
• Stay in the Kitchen: Outright says this is where women naturally belong. He ends up dying in one to a common kitchen knife, of course.
• Straw Misogynist: A sexist pig nobody likes. Nobody is sad to see him die either, ironically at the hands of a woman. Twice.
• Super-Speed: Naoya can move at incredible speeds as an effect of his cursed technique, inherited from his father. During his fight with Maki, he begins moving at speeds fast enough to visibly break the sound barrier. When he returns as a Cursed Spirit in the Culling Game, it seems his technique has gotten even faster, able to reach super-sonic speeds with little to no windup and utterly trash his surroundings simply by the sonic boom produced by him passing through. When he evolves himself through a Cursed Womb, he's able to use his new body to reach speeds of Mach 3.
• Too Clever by Half: He is a very arrogant but knowledgeable sorcerer, possessing intel on the techniques of other major families such as the Kamo clan's Blood Manipulation. He puts his knowledge to good use against Choso, being wary of the technique's dangers while exploiting its weaknesses. However, he doesn't stop to consider that his opponent might not be human; when Choso uses his Death Painting abilities, Naoya nearly dies on the spot.
• Undignified Death: The other members of the clan at least had the dignity of dying in battle with Maki, but Naoya is left for dead only to be stabbed in the back by Maki's mother as he pathetically tries to crawl away. Unfortunately, not being killed with cursed energy of a cursed weapon and dying in such a pathetic manner meant that he had the prime conditions to return to life as a Cursed Spirit out for revenge on Maki. And again when Maki cuts him off mid-rant as his body warps and distorts grotesquely by nonchalantly cutting him in half.
• Unknown Rival: Thanks to his father's will naming Megumi as the clan head, he views Megumi as his competition. Megumi doesn't care about being named clan head himself, and only goes along with it so his allies can claim the weapons of the Zen'in Clan to help resolve their crisis. Despite the narrative making him seem like he was going to be a significant obstacle to the heroes, the closest he gets is briefly clashing with Yuji and Choso. He then proceeds to lose the subsequent fight against Choso, who is completely uninvolved in the power plays of the Jujutsu World, and gets taken out by Maki during the slaughter of the Zen'in clan without ever meeting Megumi. He doesn't even die to a sorcerer or a curse in the end!
• The Usurper: He fully intends to take Megumi's rightful place as head of the Zen'in clan. Ironically, his ambitions to do so eventually contributed to the clan's wholesale destruction, all without Megumi's direct input or being aware of his existence at all.
• Youngest Child Wins: He's the youngest of Naobito's sons and is the only one to inherit his Projection Sorcery Cursed Technique. He believes this, coupled with his natural talent, makes him a shoe-in as the next head of the Zen'in Clan. Naobito's will does indeed state Naoya is to be his successor, but only in the event that Satoru Gojo hasn't been killed or incapacitated, in which case Megumi Fushiguro will lead the clan instead. Since this exact event has occurred, Naoya wastes no time in trying to murder Megumi to take back his "rightful" place as head of the clan.

A Special Grade 1 sorcerer and member of the Hei Unit. He's the younger brother of Naobito Zen'in and the father of Maki and Mai Zen'in.

His Cursed Technique, Blazing Courage, focuses cursed energy into his sword which is then released as a blazing fire that envelopes his body.

• Archnemesis Dad: Quickly establishes himself as one in his second appearance, fighting Maki in a life-or-death struggle after grievously wounding Mai, then trying to feed both of them to cursed spirits.
• Be Careful What You Wish For: He makes it clear from his second appearance and general treatment of Maki and Mai offscreen that he wants nothing more than for them to be gone, as their very existence is a walking reminder of his failure to become clan head. He succeeds in killing Mai — which ends up releasing Maki's full potential as a Heavenly Restricted, allowing her to cut him down with ease.
• Black Eyes of Evil: He has almost pitch black eyes, and is a complete bastard who is willing to kill his own daughters.
• Counterspell: Like Naobito, he can use the Zen'in clan's defensive secret art, the Falling Blossom Emotion. He utilizes a unique variant focused on sword use to cut down enemies in a Single-Stroke Battle.
• Covered with Scars: He has several small scars on his face.
• Curb-Stomp Battle: Round 2 against Maki does not end well for him, as despite releasing his Cursed Technique from the get go, she cuts through it, his sword and his head in an instant.
• Fed to Pigs: His rotting corpse, half-eaten by flies and maggots, is still lying around in the Zen'in Clan's training room when Uraume and Kenjaku drop by to use it for their own purposes, so the latter has his corpse eaten by a Cursed Spirit to clean up the mess.
• Flaming Sword: When using his technique, his cursed energy is focused into his blade and released as a blazing fire.
• Hate Sink: Ogi abusing both his daughters and attempting to kill both of them (only succeeding with Mai) only to improve his own standing in the Jujutsu world and the clan makes his comeuppance at the hands of Maki very satisfying.
• Hypocrite: He tells his daughters that he is a sorcerer first and not a "worthless swordsman", though his sword is an important part of all his techniques. This was alluded to by Naoya earlier, describing the family's treatment of Toji. This becomes especially hypocritical as we learn that under all his arrogance and disdain for those that must rely solely on weaponry, he is TERRIFIED at the idea of facing Toji again.
• I Have No Son!: Or daughters; Ogi blames Maki and Mai for his standing within the clan, claiming their weakness as the reason he didn't become clan head.
• Iaijutsu Practitioner: He is seen drawing his katana with impressive speed to threaten his nephew Naoya after he provokes Jinichi. His use of the Falling Blossom Emotion art is also built around defensive iaijutsu techniques.
• Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Ogi sheds tears after he cuts down Maki and is preparing to kill her and her sister, not because he feels remorse for his actions, but because he's wallowing in self-pity for not being made clan head due to his "worthless daughters."
• Katanas Are Just Better: He wields a katana. He coats his blade in cursed energy, even manipulating the energy to keep the blade's shape if it is broken in combat. He also uses his sword to focus cursed energy into fire as part of his cursed technique.
• Laser-Guided Karma: He embodies most of the clan's less noble beliefs and is perfectly happy to cut his own daughters down for being "failures". He ends up panicking when Maki's newfound power reminds him of Toji and when he tries to retaliate he's killed with without any trouble by his "worthless daughter". As a bonus, he's killed with a blade formed from his other daughter Mai's Cursed technique, who had just died thanks to his actions, which allowed Maki to awaken her full potential. None of which would have happened if his own sadism towards his 'failures' hadn't pushed him to make their demise as horrible as possible, rather than simply killing them when he'd had the chance.
• Never My Fault: As he espouses to Mai as he's dragging her and Maki to be Devoured by the Horde he feels the only difference between himself and Naobito was their offspring's potential as a Sorcerer, and if they'd been worthier than Naoya, his ascent to leadership of the clan would have been guaranteed. Word of God further states this blame is completely misguided as he was always vastly inferior to Naobito and simply never grasped that Naobito was better than him. Instead he just blamed others for his own inadequacies.
  Ogi: "Children must not hold back their parents."
• Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Rather than just killing Maki and Mai when he had them helpless before him, he throws them into a training room to be devoured by the curses stored within, allowing Mai time to craft an object larger than a bullet, aware the strain will kill her but that her death would fully release Maki's potential as a Heavenly Restricted, giving her the power to defeat her father and completely destroy the Zen'in Clan.
• Off with His Head!: Maki effortlessly slices his head in half during their second "fight" after awakening to the same potential as Toji Fushiguro.
• Offing the Offspring: Ogi takes it upon himself to personally execute his daughters under the pretense of the two working to free Gojo, but in truth he only does so to increase the clan's standing among the Three Great Houses. When Naoya expresses doubt that Ogi can go through with it, Jinichi reveals that killing Maki and Mai was Ogi's idea in the first place. Mai dies thanks to his machinations, but ensures Maki avenges her.
• Oh, Crap!: He has a terrified reaction to Maki awakening her potential, as it reminds him of Toji's incredible strength. He tries to regain his composure and face her again, but is swiftly cut down.
  Ogi: The curses have vanished?! What happened?! My body still remembers. The feeling of fear… that I had tried to forget.
• Playing with Fire: His cursed technique releases his cursed energy as a blazing fire that surrounds his body, though we don't get to see it in action since he is killed immediately as he is about to use it.
• Sadist: He could have easily killed off both Mai and Maki once he struck Maki down, but he instead dragged them both half-dead to a training room filled with curses and left them to be devoured in a painful demise. He had no real reason for doing so other to make their deaths as horrible as possible, and it sells how utterly disgusted he was towards his daughters.
• Samurai Ponytail: He wears his hair in a traditional ponytail.
• We Hardly Knew Ye: He is killed by Maki within his second proper appearance. He doesn't do much other than cement himself as one of the biggest Hate Sinks in the entire series before dying.
• Wrecked Weapon: His katana is quickly broken in his clash with Maki, but he replaces the blade with cursed energy to continue fighting. He firmly claims that he is a sorcerer first and not a swordsman.
• You Are Already Dead: Ogi bellows his intent to kill Maki by burning her to the bone... not realizing she's already cut off the top of his head without breaking stride.
• You Remind Me of X: Maki's fully awakened potential wakes an instinctual terror, reminding him of facing Toji, with the implication that part of his abhorrent behaviour towards Maki throughout her life was that her Heavenly Restriction reminded him of Toji.

Jinichi Zen'in

A Special Grade 1 sorcerer and member of the Hei Unit, also the older brother of Toji Fushiguro.

His unnamed Cursed Technique creates massive fists that mirror his own punches.

• All There in the Manual: His relation as Toji's older brother was only revealed in the Vol. 17 extras and not the main series, though it was hinted at with Naoya's comments and the kanji (甚) used within Jinichi and Toji's names.
• Barbarian Long Hair: He has long, wild and unkempt hair that adds to his brutish looks.
• Berserk Button: Mentioning his brother Toji seems to serve as one for him, as Naoya's taunt comparing the brothers causes him to immediately attack Naoya, and Ranta declaring that Maki is the same as Toji causes him to make a reckless charge at her that costs him his life.
• Bruiser with a Soft Center: The Vol. 17 extras revealed that he treated the lesser members of the clan with a surprising degree of respect and kindness, contrasting with his intimidating appearance. This kindness didn't seem to extend towards Maki and Mai, if Maki's treatment of his dead body is anything to go by.
• The Brute: He has a very brutish appearance that Naoya makes fun of him for, along with possessing a very physical fighting style.
• Covered with Scars: He has a large X-shaped scar on his forehead, along with many others on his body.
• Death from Above: His unnamed cursed technique rains massive fists upon his enemies that seem to mirror his physical punches.
• Desecrating the Dead: After decapitating him, Maki chucks his head into the clan pond without any respect.
• Good Old Fisticuffs: He fights using his bare hands, with his punches being followed by the giant fists of his cursed technique. Notably, between Ogi and Naoya, he's the only one that actually sticks to not using a weapon in combat at all.
• Hair-Trigger Temper: Immediately tries to attack Naoya after he makes some choice comments comparing him to Toji.
• Large and in Charge: Among the three temporary heads who are in charge following Naobito's death, he is the physically largest.
• Leeroy Jenkins: When Ranta tells him that Maki has become just like Toji, it launches Jinichi into a rage and causes him to charge in recklessly to kill Maki with a barrage of attacks. He ends up being killed for rushing in.
• Nice to the Waiter: A Vol. 17 extra where the Kukuru Unit reviews members of the Hei has them universally praising Jinichi, each remembering a time when he treated them more kindly than one would expect from one of the Zen'in higher-ups.
• Off with His Head!: He is unceremoniously beheaded by Maki after he attempts to crush her with his cursed technique.
• Person of Mass Destruction: What little we see of his cursed technique shows him to be a highly destructive fighter, demolishing a large area with giant fists that rain from the sky.
• Pragmatic Villainy: Played with. He bluntly tells Naoya that he views Megumi as an objectively superior heir, seeming to set up for this trope, but then says he still must be killed because they cannot risk leaving the family's wealth and resources to him. Despite having a (relatively) more open-minded view, he still dismisses his own personal interests in favor of the clan's greater benefit.
• Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: He creates a giant version with his cursed technique, literally raining down massive fists.
• There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Once he realizes that Maki is now the same as Toji, he immediately tries to kill her with an incredibly destructive assault that destroys the surrounding area. Not that it helps him at all, but the attempt was there.
• We Hardly Knew Ye: He is swiftly killed by Maki once he attempts to fight her head on. Among the three leaders introduced at the beginning of the arc, he receives the least characterization.

Hei Unit

In General

Hei Unit

Left to right: Chojuro, Jinichi and Ranta

The Elite Unit of the Zen'in clan, made up of members who are recognised as having skills of a semi-grade 1 Sorcerer or higher according to the criteria of Jujutsu High. Though smaller in number, they possess Cursed techniques — unlike the lesser Kukuru unit — making them strongest fighting force of the clan. Their leader is Naoya Zen'in and they include Jinichi Zen'in, alongside Ranta and Chojuro Zen'in along with 6 unnamed others.

• Curb Stomp Cushion: They put up a marginally better fight against Maki than the Kukuru Unit, thanks to their Cursed Techniques and skills. It still doesn't save them from getting wiped out entirely by a pissed-off Maki with her Heavenly Restriction fully unleashed.
• Killed Offscreen: Apparently besides the members we saw in action there were also 6 other members of the squad who were absent when Maki went on her rampage. She made sure to track them down and finish the job afterwards.
• We Hardly Knew Ye: They're utterly brutalised and killed within pages of being introduced. Their entire group is wiped out in the same chapter they debut, and the only reason they last more than a few pages fighting against Maki is their Cursed Techniques, none of which saves them in the end. Chojuro doesn't even get any speaking lines before he's killed — not that he could speak anyway, given his method of death.

Ranta Zen'in

His unnamed Cursed Technique creates two large eyes that temporarily paralyze anyone caught within their gaze.

• Blind Obedience: Despite coming across as one of the Zen'in Clan's more respectful and idealistic members, he still blindly obeys the clan's decisions and doesn't consider their actions to be wrong.
• Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Based on what he says about Maki having "gone mad" and killing Ogi, Ranta doesn't even consider the possibility that Ogi's death was done in self-defense, seeing Maki as the perpetrator and Ogi as being in the right. His Blind Obedience results in him pointlessly killing himself in what he perceives to be a Heroic Sacrifice to protect the Zen'in clan, unaware that he failed to make a difference in the end as he passes away.
• Eye Scream: Ranta's Cursed Technique creates two giant eyes that paralyse the target with their gaze. However, said eyes are connected to his own, meaning he sustains the same damage they do. Maki completely blinds him by destroying the two giant eyes after overpowering their paralytic effect.
• Let Them Die Happy: Unintentional, but Ranta dies from the blowback of Maki using her full strength to break through his cursed technique, the strain of which destroys his eyes and severely damages his internal organs. As he lies dying from his wounds, his eyes gone, he assumes that Jinichi's last attack on Maki succeeded, unaware that the opposite is the truth.
• Magical Eye: His technique spawns two massive eyes used to paralyze enemies.
• Oh, Crap!: Ranta gets this when he realizes his best efforts cannot restrain Maki, even as the effort is literally killing him to slow her down even a little, desperately begging Jinichi to ignore him and take the opportunity to kill her regardless. He points out that the only reason that Toji Fushiguro didn't wipe out the Zen'in clan was on a whim, and Maki is not in as charitable a mood right now, so if they don't kill her, the clan will be destroyed.
• Older Than They Look: Ranta looks young enough to be a Jujutsu High first-year, but is actually 27. Akutami describes him as "that guy at family gatherings who looks young enough to sit at the kid's end of the table at a family gathering, yet hangs out with the old folks the whole time."
• The Paralyzer: His technique is used to paralyze, but its hold can still be overpowered by a strong enough enemy.
• Support Party Member: Is very effective at using his paralyzing technique in combination with the other Hei members' more physical abilities.
• Tears of Blood: Ranta's cursed technique strains him to the point his eyes bleed, and he is left blinded once Maki breaks free by destroying the two giant eyes he created.
• Token Good Teammate: Ranta seems to be one of the few members of the Zen'in Clan who isn't a complete bastard, being beloved by the Kukuru Unit for his kindness in particular. His main faults appear to be his youth and idealism making him blind to the Zen'in Clan's wanton cruelty.

Chojuro Zen'in

An elderly member of the Hei Unit.

His unnamed Cursed Technique allows him to manipulate the earth.

• Dishing Out Dirt: His cursed technique lets him manipulate the earth to some degree by placing his palms upon the ground.
• Eyes Always Shut: Chojuro always has his eyes closed in a creepy half-moon crescent. He opens at least one of them wide in surprise once Maki tears out his throat.
• Giant Hands of Doom: Chojuro's cursed technique creates two massive hands from the earth to attack with.
• Impromptu Tracheotomy: He is killed when Maki tears his throat out.
• Miniature Senior Citizen: He is a small, creepy-looking old man.
• Perpetual Smiler: Chojuro always has a toothless grin on his face, with his closed eyes and such making him resemble a jester's mask. He stops smiling when Maki Tears out his throat though.
• The Quiet One: Chojuro apparently never speaks, as one member of the Hei Unit reveals in the Vol. 17 extras.

Kukuru Unit

In General

Kukuru Unit

A unit comprised of Zen'in clan males who possess Cursed Energy, but no Cursed Techniques, instead making up for this with gruelling martial arts training and large numbers. Individually, each member is weak, but the full group working together are still a formidible threat. Their captain is Nobuaki Zen'in.

• Badass Normal: They are made up of the Zen'in clan males who do not possess Cursed Techniques, instead relying on physical martial arts. Maki was a former member prior to joining Jujutsu High.
• Killed Offscreen: Apparently there were 21 members who were absent when Maki went on her rampage. She made sure to track them down and finish the job afterwards.
• Mook Horror Show: Dear god, if the Kill Bill allusions weren't obvious enough, these guys never stood a chance and Maki cuts through them like butter in a matter of pages.
• Mooks: It's literally there in their job description — Male Zen'in members who possess above average fighting skills thanks to Cursed Energy, but no Cursed Techniques, presenting as a numerous, uniform group.
• Mook Chivalry: Averted. They attack in tandem and often from multiple angles at the same time to damage an opponent. Doesn't work with Maki though.
• We Hardly Knew Ye: They're all killed off to the last man in the very same chapter they're introduced. We only learn their captain's name and even he doesn't last much longer than his men. Chapter 152 reveals that there were apparently 21 other members of the squad who were absent when Maki went on her rampage, but in the same sentence this is revealed, it's confirmed that she tracked them down and killed them in the following days
• Zerg Rush: They are highly capable combatants and work together well, but since they only show up once Maki has unlocked her full potential as a Heavenly Restricted, they still fall like wheat before the scythe.

Nobuaki Zen'in

• Badass Normal: Doesn't possess a Cursed Technique but is a skilled martial artist. Not that it helps during Maki's rampage.
• Impromptu Tracheotomy: His throat is ripped out by Maki.
• Mook Lieutenant: As captain of the Kukuru Unit, he commands all of the Zen'in Clan's fighters who don't have Cursed Techniques.
• Smug Snake: What little we see of Nobukai's personality indicates this, arrogantly assuming Maki's killing of Ogi was through an unfair ambush rather than one-on-one combat, and orders his men to rush ahead an subdue her so he can take his time heading there and leisurely give her the Coup de Grâce blow once she's helpless. He's notably shocked when he enters the room and find all his men dead at her hands, and is shown with a cold sweat on his face when the Hei Squad shows up to attack Maki and bail him out — not that it saves him for long anyway. His men don't get as much characterisation, but their sheer disbelief at the wounds Maki's inflicting on them despite their numerical advantage speaks to this trope as well.
• Underestimating Badassery: Nobuaki assumed that the only reason Ogi lost to Maki is that she killed him when he was on the toilet or asleep, not even entertaining the possibility that she'd gotten strong enough to kill him in direct combat. Needless to say, he's quite taken aback when he orders his men to capture her alive so he can give her the Coup de Grâce, only to enter the room and find her standing amongst the corpses of his entire squad.

Others

The Twins' Mother

"For once, make me glad that I gave birth to you, Maki."

The unnamed, non-sorcerer mother of Maki and Mai Zen'in.

• Abusive Parents: She's verbally abusive towards her daughters, telling Maki to her face that she regrets she gave birth to her. Then she allows Maki to walk into a trap where Maki's father is waiting to kill her without warning her. Her poor treatment of her children is presumably a survival instinct for being trapped in the Zen'in Clan since the clan looks down on both women and non-sorcerers, and in her final moments, she acknowledges she's always loved her daughters.
• Almost Dead Guy: She survives having her throat slashed open by Maki just long enough to find the half-dead Naoya and stab him to death with a kitchen knife.
• Awful Wedded Life: It's strongly implied her marriage to Ogi isn't a happy one, what with the way the Zen'in look down on both women and non-sorcerers. The fact that she actually loves their daughters and had tried to warn away Maki from the death trap Ogi had set, as well as her final thoughts being an admission of pride towards her daughters for wiping out the Zen'in Clan, including Ogi, all but confirms it.
• Beneath the Mask: On the outside, she's a stern mother who's ashamed of her daughters for being "failures". On the inside, she loves them both and is ashamed of herself for allowing their poor treatment by the rest of the family.
• The Dog Bites Back: Though lethally wounded herself, she manages to make her way to the wounded Naoya, one of the biggest sexists in the family and her elder daughter's nemesis, and stabs him to death while he's helpless.
• Extreme Doormat: Due to the Zen'in Clan's rampant sexism and her non-sorcerer status, she really has no choice but to take whatever abuse the male members of the clan hurl at her and her daughters. She doesn't even show emotion when Naoya talks about one of her daughters being killed right in front of her. The most emotional she gets is screaming at Maki not to enter the clan's Cursed Warehouse because she knows it's a trap.
• Parental Betrayal: While she doesn't tell Maki outright that her father is planning on killing her, she does try to stop Maki from going into the Cursed Warehouse where he's waiting to ambush her, clearly trying to save her daughter's life in a roundabout way.
• Slashed Throat: Maki kills her this way, slicing her throat open and leaving her to bleed out. Her mother actually wanted Maki to kill her and deliberately put on an act of hating her daughters to strengthen Maki's resolve.
• So Proud of You: Her final words are admitting that she's glad she gave birth to Maki and Mai.
• Suicide by Cop: After Maki kills the rest of the clan, she asks her mother why she tried to stop her from walking into her father's trap, seemingly considering sparing her. Instead of answering, Maki's mother acts hysterical to goad Maki into cutting her down.
