Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jujutsu_logo.png

Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High Schoolnote , also commonly referred to as Jujutsu High, is one of the two jujutsu schools in Japan with the goal of guiding future generations of sorcerers.

     Jujutsu Sorcerers In General
Humans born with the rare ability to manipulate Cursed Energy and perceive Cursed Spirits. The overwhelming majority of sorcerers in Japan live under a secretive shadow government known as Jujutsu Society, dedicating themselves to exterminating Curses to protect the non-Sorcerer population.
  • Barrier Warrior: Barrier techniques are one of the universal types of jujutsu available to all sorcerers.
  • Death-Activated Superpower:
    • Since Jujutsu Sorcery is fueled by negative emotions and experiences, then Death; one of the most traumatic and painful experiences possible can lead to sorcerers getting incredibly powerful. Being on the brink of Death can lead to Enlightenment Superpowers for Sorcerers/Cursed Spirits who are skilled/talented enough, and if you make the mistake of killing a sorcerer without using Cursed Energy and they're regretful or angry enough, they can return as powerful Vengeful Cursed Spirits who are far more powerful than when they were alive.
    • It is pointed out by Kenjaku that dying causes a great transformation to a human's brain, which generates a massive amount of cursed energy. He exploits this by way of the culling games where he plans on harvesting all that energy to carry out his plan.
  • Enlightenment Superpowers: Sorcerers can rapidly grow stronger by gaining insight into themselves in special moments either by being at the point of death, or hitting a Black Flash. Doing both exposes them to the core of cursed energy which allows them to evolve to a higher level in combat.
  • Evil Sorcerer: Primarily described In-Universe as “Curse-Users”. The term is defined as any Sorcerer who disobeys the regulations set by Jujutsu headquarters and uses their abilities for criminal purposes.
  • Functional Magic: Jujutsu Sorcery: All humans, barring two notable exceptions, generate cursed energy and some of them have an ingrained cursed technique, but to be a sorcerer, your brain has to be uniquely structured in such a way that you can manipulate cursed energy. Sorcerers can be born into sorcerer families or may arise spontaneously from Muggle parents. Innate Cursed Techniques are also born ingrained into a sorcerer and cannot be created or learned. Jujutsu also allows for binding vows, which trade off effectiveness in an aspect of a sorcerer's abilities for increased effectiveness in another, as well as it growing stronger through The Power of Hate and death.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works:
    • 80% of a sorcerer's strength and potential is down to their inborn abilities. Cursed Techniques come with a sorcerer from birth and cannot be acquired through training. To get stronger, a sorcerer must either maximize their full innate potential, use a binding vow to get a boost in power in certain situations or have a Cursed Technique that allows them to either steadily or rapidly grow stronger.
    • Noritoshi Kamo also tells Megumi that a sorcerer's age doesn't have much to do with their strength. This is seen most egregiously with Gojo, whose birth altered the balance of the world and made cursed spirits stronger to compensate, and forced powerful curse users into hiding and retirement as a preteen.
  • Healing Factor: Known as Reverse Cursed Technique, this is a sorcerer-exclusive universal technique that multiplies cursed energy by itself to create positive energy. This positive energy can be used to heal oneself and others.
  • Healing Magic Is the Hardest: Because performing Reverse Cursed Technique requires the sorcerer to multiply cursed energy by itself, not many sorcerers know how to actually use it. Even if they know how to use it, not all injuries or even healing others can be possible depending on the Sorcerer's skill level. Not to mention the fact that RCT costs twice the normal amount of cursed energy used and repeated injury and healing slows down your RCT. This all means that your ability to heal is limited by how much cursed energy you possess and your healing will get slower the more injuries you heal.
    • At the lowest level, RCT can heal minor injuries but not anything as severe as a burn mark.
    • Then when you progress beyond that, you can reattach torn limbs and body parts, but replacing them entirely is extremely difficult.
    • Very good RCT users with years of practice and 24/7 usage of it who can heal missing organs and such can lack the ability to use RCT to heal other people, like Gojo.
    • Yuta can resurrect someone who just died like Yuji with RCT.
    • Even above all that as well, there are usually two surefire ways of killing an RCT user or someone they want to heal, headshots that destroy the brain where RCT is performed, and poisoning, since the RCT user has to be able to identify and get rid of the poison.
    • However, Yuta Okkotsu can heal even poisoning.
    • And Hakari Kinji can heal so fast that he can survive an exploding head by regenerating as fast as it exploded while simultaneously blowing the lightning in his head out of his nose, as well as filter out a super-lethal dose of chlorine gas while unconscious, rendering him virtually unkillable so long as he isn't instantly vaporized and his Jackpot is running.
    • Sukuna has demonstrated the ability to resurrect Yuji days after his death with his high-level RCT.
    • Hakari Kinji also subverts this trope with his cursed technique. His ability to hit a jackpot and gain Infinite Cursed Energy grants him automatic RCT at the highest level to prevent the unlimited amount of CE from destroying his body. However, this is an unusual example as he can't consciously perform RCT and he needs to Gamble to get the ability.
    • Even harder than all the above is using RCT to heal a burned-out Cursed Technique after a domain, only demonstrated by Sukuna and Gojo. However, this is compared to overworking a combustion engine that is already in the need of a cooldown, and overuse of it results in Blood from Every Orifice from damage to the brain structure.
  • Magic Enhancement: Known as Reinforcement, this is another of the universal techniques available to all sorcerers. Using cursed energy, a shaman can improve their speed, strength, reflexes, and durability and even get limited soul protection. It can also be applied to weapons to increase their effectiveness.
    • Too much cursed energy flowing through a body or weapon can break it. However, in human bodies, this can result in them performing automatic RCT as seen with Hakari.
    • Certain physical attributes like speed, mass or toughness can also be amplified by innate curse techniques, and the difference between enhancement from regular cursed energy and these is very noticeable to sorcerers.
  • Magic Is Evil: Jujutsu is fuelled by Cursed energy; a power source formed by negative emotions like anger and disgust. And while it isn't directly harmful to one's well-being to practice sorcery, it's implied regularly generating the vast quantity of negative thoughts required to exorcise Curses can have detrimental effects on mental stability.
  • Mark of the Supernatural: A not uncommon feature of many sorcerers is unusual physiological characteristics like unusual hair color, black sclera, special eyes, facial markings and so on.
  • Megaton Punch: Standard when so many characters can strengthen their attacks with Cursed Energy.
    • Black Flash is the universal and perhaps ultimate example of this. A punch that causes space to distort and raise the power of the initial blow by an exponent of 2.5. Meaning that the more CE is put into a hit, the greater the blow. In addition to being available to all sorcerers and cursed spirits, it also acts as a powerup for the user both physically and mentally.
    • Certain Cursed Techniques are exaggerations of this trope. Naobito and Naoya's Projection Sorcery can increase the us power of their already powerful hits by gaining speed through continuous movement.
    • Yuki Tsukumo can increase her density to ridiculous amounts in order to amplify the strength of her punches.
    • Uro Takako gains a megaton punch by breaking the fabric of space with her technique and knocking around enemies with the resulting shockwaves.
    • Ryu Ishigori hits far harder than most characters because of his CT giving him a ridiculous output.
    • Gojo's Limitless allows him to combine his Azure Lapse with a regular punch to devastating effect, making even powerful sorcerers puke from non-serious hits
  • Personality Powers: The reverse is the case, since sorcerers do not create their technique and it is instead engraved in them at birth and manifests in their 5th or 6th year of life. Many Sorcerers have personalities, obsessions and even professions that their cursed techniques are based on. This implies that a cursed technique pushes a sorcerer to have a certain personality that fits the power.
    • Hakari is a gambler and his technique is based on pachinko, Higuruma is a lawyer so his technique uses the lawful process to debuff his opponents, Takaba is a professional comedian and his technique warps reality to whatever situation would be funny, Charles is a manga artist who places manga panels on people with a giant pen to see the future, etc.
  • Power at a Price: Binding Vows are another universal Jujutsu ability that can be used by everyone and even extends to non sapient beings like crows (although that may be in part due to Mei Mei's technique helping them). Binding Vows work by having the user give up an advantage they have in any attribute of Jujutsu in exchange for a greater advantage in another attribute. They can be made by one person on themselves either willingly or unwillingly (Heavenly Restriction), or with other people in order to facilitate deals and prevent betrayal. Examples of such Binding Vows are the common Revealing one's hand, Heavenly Restriction which can also be Blessed with Suck for others, Yuta's death vow to Rika and Mei Mei's bird strike.
    • Breaking a Binding Vow with yourself only results in the loss of whatever benefit you gained, but breaking a Binding Vow made with another person has actual consequences that are so severe even powerful beings like Sukuna won't even bother thinking of breaking them.
    • Although, Loophole Abuse is a thing as Binding Vows can be subverted by a user who has a technique or uses Exact Words since the vows don't follow the spirit of the vow. Case in point, Yuta resurrecting Yuji doesn't result in him being punished for breaking the vow he made with the elders of Jujutsu, and Kenjaku's body hopping allows him to break vows he's made in a different body as there's no consequence to him.
  • Revive Kills Zombie: Sorcerers who can output positive energy can easily kill curses as the energy destroys their very structure. Not even a cursed spirit as powerful as Sukuna can survive a full-on hit with positive energy.
  • Super-Toughness: This is due to Magic Enhancement as sorcerers are usually more durable than normal humans but less so than Heavenly Restriction users. It also varies depending on that sorcerer's skill at properly defending themselves. Choso points out that if Yuji had properly blocked his Blood Meteorite, he wouldn't have been pierced at all, as opposed to having a hole punched all the way through him which is what actually happened.
    • Kenjaku goes from getting his arms removed from blocking Yuki's punch, to having minor bruises from direct consecutive punches to the face from a fully healed Yuki.
    • Yuki was able to block a mini-uzumaki she saw with only minor burn marks, but got a hole blasted in her by another one aimed at her abdomen she wasn't protecting.
    • Domain Amplification as a technique can reduce the damage of a hit from a sorcerer as powerful as Gojo Satoru.

Cursed Technique: Straw Doll Technique

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nobara_kugisaki_4.png

"I love the me that dresses up and looks beautiful! I love the me that's strong! I'm Nobara Kugisaki!"

An energetic, confident young woman with a bit of a temper. Nobara is a first-year at Jujutsu High, who became a jujutsu sorcerer in order to sustain her new living in Tokyo.

Her Cursed Technique, "Straw Doll Technique", allows her to use nails and straw dolls to link any two parts of anything that has cursed energy. She can then damage the part she has (usually a smaller piece of a main body) to damage the other part (usually the main body).

  • Action Fashionista: Nobara loves shopping for clothes in her free time, and is not afraid to nail enemies with a hammer and nails imbued with cursed energy.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Her hair is orange in manga illustrations but is more of a ginger brown in the anime.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: Briefly with Itadori during their fight against Eso and Kechizu, with the two activating Black Flash at the same time and defeating the Death Paintings.
  • Be Yourself: Nobara strongly believes in being true to herself, proudly proclaiming to Momo that she loves dressing up as well as being beautiful and strong, stating that she doesn't care about gender expectations for female jujutsu sorcerers. Her backstory reveals that this was the reason she wanted to move to Tokyo — to escape the insularity and fear of her hometown.
  • Big Sister Worship:
    • She viewed her neighbor, Saori, as a big sister figure, inheriting her fascination with city life from her and trying to adopt her refined mannerisms shortly after meeting her. She bawled her eyes out when local prejudices drove Saori out of town and Nobara's goal is to reunite with her now that she's a sorcerer.
    • After meeting Maki, Nobara develops a similar relationship with her, praising her for her strength and determination to take over her abusive clan of misogynistic sorcerers without cursed energy.
  • Black Magician Girl: Crossed with Action Girl. Nobara can and will kick ass, no matter how dangerous the situation gets. She is quite effective at it too, often nailing her opponents straight in the heart if it gets that far. Although she is a Grade 3 sorcerer, Nobara possesses above-average skill recognized by the likes of Aoi Todo, who recommend her to be promoted to a Grade 1 sorcerer.
  • Bully Hunter: As a child she met her best friend Fumi by beating up two boys who had stolen her backpack and put it in a place she couldn't reach it.
  • Country Mouse: Like Yuji but she's from even further off in the countryside and became a jujutsu sorcerer to live in Tokyo.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Subverted. She has orange-brown hair and amber eyes but as flashbacks show her hair is actually dyed.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She has the habit of mocking her allies and her enemies.
  • The Ditz: Though not nearly on the same level as Yuji, Nobara shows she can be clueless and misinformed on several occasions. A Running Gag is her and Yuji reacting exactly the same way when faced with something terrifying or adorable, like they share the same brain cell.
  • Explaining Your Power to the Enemy: Averted. She is one of the few characters in the series who rarely engages in this as much of her arsenal is reliant on surprise and multi-step preparation and thus wouldn't immediately benefit from the power boost given by this kind of contract. This can be seen during her fight with Eso and Kechizu, where she misleads them into thinking that her technique lets her turn an enemy's Cursed Techniques back at them.
  • Eye Scream: Mahito manages to briefly touch the left side of her face in Shibuya by using his Body Double as a decoy. When his technique then activates, Nobara's eye is blown cleanly out of its socket by the seizure-like symptoms of Idle Transfiguration.
  • Face Death with Dignity: In what could be her final moments, she reflects on her life and concludes it wasn't so bad, asking Itadori to tell everyone what she said before Mahito's Idle Transfiguration seemingly kills her.
  • Fantasy-Forbidding Father: Despite being a sorcerer herself who taught Nobara the Straw Doll Technique, her grandmother initially forbade her from attending Jujutsu High according to the official fanbook. After they had fought over it, her grandma relented and she enrolled through her recommendation.
  • Fiery Redhead: Has slightly reddish orange-brown hair and is one of the most Hot-Blooded of the trio.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: Yuji fights near-entirely with his bare hands and only uses cursed energy to augment the strength of his blows, making him the Fighter. Megumi, who wields the most powerful cursed technique and factors it the most into combat, is the Mage, while Nobara's preference for hiding how her Straw Doll Technique works and fighting at range makes her the Thief.
  • The Fighting Narcissist: Gets very angry when Momo hits "[her] sacred face."
  • Flower Motifs: Roses. Nobara's name has the kanji for rose and she's associated with roses in merchandise, symbolizing her femininity that values her looks while having a more thorny, tough side.
  • Freudian Trio: The Id to Yuji's Ego and Megumi's Superego, being the most energetic and short-tempered among them.
  • Generation Xerox: According to the Fanbook, Nobara's grandmother was a jujutsu sorcerer who used the Straw Doll Technique and taught it to her.
  • Girliness Upgrade: The tomboyish Nobara became more refined after meeting Saori during her childhood, speaking more softly and wanting to practice braiding her friend Fumi's hair.
  • Girly Bruiser: Nobara is an energetic young woman who likes shopping and takes pride in her good looks, but is also a jujutsu sorcerer who will use a hammer to send nails imbued with her cursed energy at foes.
  • Go Out with a Smile: She smiles reassuringly at Yuji just before she's seemingly killed by Mahito's Idle Transfiguration.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: She's often the first to lash out and start shouting when someone provokes or irritates her.
  • Has a Type: Someone who's not useless, broke, smelly, stingy or dead. With how abrasive Nobara can be, this doesn't exactly clear up her preferences much. The Official Fanbook states that her ideal man is Oda Nobunaga. Make of that what you will.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: When Yuji's Junior High classmate, Yuko, who has a crush on him, asks if there is something between him and Nobara, Nobara's response is a hilariously blunt no. Even if hell froze over and danced the lambada? Still no. As soon as she says this Nobara realizes with some confusion that her heart just skipped a beat. Shortly after Yuji and Yuko part ways, Nobara says she's realized her true feelings. That the thought of Itadori getting a girlfriend before Nobara gets a boyfriend really pisses her off.
  • Hot-Blooded: Far more spirited and prone to anger than the others.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: As a fighter who keeps her cards close to her chest, she is prone to doing this against enemies who think they have her figured out. Hammer gone? She can just launch her nails with Cursed Energy. Nails all shot out? She can unleash Hairpin to have them blast the opponent from where they are currently situated (sometimes when they're even still in the enemy). No straw dolls available for her Cursed Technique? She'll use herself as the "doll".
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Discussed with Yuji. While Yuji is saddened that they had to kill Eso and Kechizu, Nobara states that she has no problem with it, accepting killing as part of being a jujutsu sorcerer and that they are all accomplices in taking someone's life and their loved ones' grief.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: Nobara's desire to live in Tokyo by becoming a jujutsu sorcerer stems from growing up in a close-minded village in the countryside that ostracized her childhood friend Saori for being an outsider, causing her to move out of the village. She thinks to herself that she's glad to have met people different from the villagers in Jujutsu High before Mahito blows up her left eye.
  • Image Song: DESPERADO.
  • I Will Find You: Another of the reasons she became a jujutsu sorcerer and moved to Tokyo was to reunite her childhood friend Saori, who left her village after being discriminated against for being from the city.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's very hot-tempered and aggressive towards anyone that she doesn't like, but it's shown numerous times that underneath that prickly exterior lies a girl that deeply cares about her friends and for people in general (as evidenced by her hesitation in attacking the curse that was holding a child hostage). This is the most evident with Yuji; Nobara will find some way to push him around when she's pissed, but it's evident that she cares about his well-being despite knowing him for only a couple of months.
  • Man of Kryptonite: Thanks to the Resonance of her Straw Doll Technique, Nobara can strike Mahito's soul via his body and have that relay from his double to the original's soul. Mahito soon realizes that, like Yuji, Nobara is his natural enemy. Despite being defeated when Mahito blows up her left eye, Nobara's actions leave a mark on Mahito which contribute to his eventual defeat by Todo and Yuji.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Her first name contains the kanji for "wilderness" and "rose", referring to her brash and feminine nature.
    • Nobara's surname Kugisaki contains the kanji for "nail, peg, tack", alluding to her Straw Doll Technique.
  • Modesty Shorts: She wears tights with her school uniform. Which, given her male schoolmates' (and Gojo's) propensity for stealing skirts for crossdressing pranks, might be for the best.
  • Nail 'Em: She can fight by imbuing nails with cursed energy and sending them at enemies with a flick of her hammer. She can also make them explode to affect the surrounding environment after they're nailed to an object.
  • Nerves of Steel: Perhaps more so than pretty much anyone else in the cast. Nobara seems to fear nothing. Nothing.
  • Obi-Wan Moment: Shortly before Nobara is seemingly killed by Mahito, she uses what could be her last seconds to reflect on her life and tells Yuji it wasn't so bad before half her face blows up.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: She is dragged away by a bunch of curses in the Cursed Womb Arc, separating her from Megumi and Yuji. When the scene cuts back to her, all of the curses that were originally there are dead. While she's shown to have been captured by a large curse, it's clear that didn't happen without a fight.
  • Only Sane Man: Within the trio, she flipflops with Megumi in having this role. Typically if Megumi and Yuji aren't getting along, she's the one who tries to push some sense into both of them.
  • Out of Focus: In regards to the other members of the trio, Nobara has significantly less screentime compared to Yuji and Megumi. Taken further after the Shibuya arc. Itadori and Fushiguro partake in Kenjaku's Culling Game while trying to free Gojo, leaving Okkotsu and Maki to join them, all without the audience knowing if Nobara is even alive.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Nobara stands at 160 cm (5 feet 3 inches). Doesn't stop her from being a jujutsu sorcerer who can knock out enemies with her hammer if needed.
  • Plucky Girl: Nobara is a spirited lady with confidence in herself and her ability to get through a situation. Though Yuji had doubts about killing, she notably had long since accepted that it would come with the job, unaffected by her first time taking a life.
  • Proud Beauty: Nobara takes great pride in her looks, even asking a man looking for models if he'd be interested in her. The man tries to flee more because he’s terrified by the force of her personality than any problem with her looks.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Nobara was raised by her grandmother.
  • Self-Harm: Born of pragmatism rather than psychological issues (inasmuch as any jujutsu sorcerer is psychologically unhealthy). If need be, Nobara can use herself as the doll for her Straw Doll Technique, piercing her own wrist with her nails without even flinching to harm an enemy that has made a connection between themselves and her.
  • Slasher Smile: Her response to learning about Eso's cursed technique and the fact that she was affected by it. In her words, she was a bad match for him.
  • Small Town Boredom: Became a Jujutsu Sorcerer so she could move to Tokyo from her small hometown. The true reason is that she wants to meet her friend Saori, a teenage girl Nobara met when she was a child, who was ostracized in her hometown because she was from Tokyo.
  • The Strategist: Nobara possesses a strong grasp on various ways she can combat sorcerer opponents, which allows her to gain the upper hand in one-on-one battles. This is a result of her Innate Technique being very technical and requiring a lot of thought. Her tactical mind is shown in pretty much every battle she participates in.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She's more of this than a classic Tsundere, showing very little concern for her classmates and not thinking particularly highly of them, but is always ready to ride or die with them when the chips are down. She particularly seems to have an issue with Yuji, but brings him along to carry stuff and for company when she's shopping, is seen pouting when Yuji picks her up and sprints away from Eso's Wing King technique despite being both impressed and thankful, and has a heartflutter when she's trying to deny any interest in him romantically to Yuko.
  • Targeted to Hurt the Hero: When Mahito finds out she's close to Yuji, he decides to kill her and drag her body back to Yuji in another attempt to "kill his soul." Unfortunately, he appears to succeed.
  • Trash Talk: Tends to sass enemies and talk down on them, even when on the verge of death.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Nobara likes to trash talk her enemies and cares more about fighting than traditional gender roles. However, She also likes putting on makeup and going on shopping sprees for expensive things.
  • Uncertain Doom: After having her left eye blasted off by Mahito, she is rescued by Arata Nitta, who tells Yuji that she had no breathing or pulse when he got to her, but there's a very small chance that she can survive. When Yuji reunites with Megumi for the first time since the Shibuya Incident, he asks him about Nobara's condition, to which Megumi could only give a sorrowful look. Before any details can be divulged, though, Yuji and Megumi are rushed to meet Tengen, leaving the question of Nobara's survival open.
  • Verbal Tic: Uses a lot of modern Japanese slang more often found in rap and online chatrooms such as Shisunote  to try and hide her Tohoku accent, which makes her sound like "A baseball goon" when combined with her lack of an indoor voice.
  • Voodoo Doll: Her primary technique lets her damage her opponent by nailing a part of the target to a straw doll. She later demonstrates that if needed, she can use herself as a doll, amplifying the effectiveness of the technique.
  • Weapon Specialization: Nobara's weapon of choice is an everyday claw hammer enchanted with curse energy, complimenting her Cursed Techniques which revolve around using it to launch nails at enemies or drive them into her Voodoo Doll. When she needs to apply nonlethal force, she'll swap it out for a squeaky mallet.

Jujutsu: Heavenly Restriction

A second-year at Jujutsu High, and a member of the Zen'in clan.

Maki was born under a Heavenly Restriction, an innate Binding Vow that severely weakens one attribute of the afflicted's body while greatly augmenting another. In Maki's case, the level of Cursed Energy she can generate is less then that of the average Muggle, but in exchange she has developed superhuman strength, speed and durability surpassing what most Sorcerers can achieve by reinforcing their bodies with Cursed Energy.

  • Action Girl: She keeps up with the best sorcerers of her generation thanks to her superhuman physical abilities and practice with numerous Cursed Tools.
  • Adaptational Curves: Maki is noticeably more curvaceous in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 than she is in the main series. This goes hand in hand with multiple shots of Male Gaze featuring her that the series normally tries to avoid.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: The anime gives her green hair, in comparison to her black hair in the manga.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: During the events of 0, when Yuta tells Maki that he wants to be like her, it triggers Maki's memories of her time in the clan and the abuse she suffered as a result of not inheriting any cursed energy. Her family isolated her, telling others to avoid her and not to follow her example otherwise they'd risk being a "stain" on the clan like her.
  • Almighty Janitor: Due to being unable to see curses and expelling herself from the Zen'in Family, Maki is stuck as a Grade 4 Sorcerer. Despite this, she has incredible physical strength and is well-trained in using Cursed Tools, with Miwa noting that she could easily defeat a Grade 2 Curse. Her talent is eventually recognized by Mei Mei, who recommends her for promotion straight from Grade 4 to Grade 1 following the Goodwill Event.
  • Aloof Big Sister: As her older twin, she's this to Mai in their teenaged years.
  • Amazonian Beauty: It’s not shown early on in the series but following Shibuya, Maki begins wearing an outfit that shows off how incredibly jacked her arms are and she’s still drawn in an attractive way despite the burn scars covering her.
  • Ascended Extra: Downplayed. While she's always been a semi-important character, following the Shibuya Arc and Nobara's Uncertain Doom, Maki has effectively taken the position of the main female lead for the series.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: She first defeats Naoya not by simply overpowering him, but by discerning the rules of his Cursed Technique through observation mid battle and promptly countering.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses:
    • With Megumi, her first cousin once removed. She acts as a mentor to him and also uses his shadows to store her Hyper Space Arsenal, which has led them to train extensively in close-quarters and multi-melee combat together.
    • Also shown with Yuji during the Culling Game arc, where they end up fighting Sukuna possessing Megumi, they work extremely well with each other due to their similar fighting styles.
  • Badass Normal: Subverted. She can't see curses or use Cursed Techniques, making her seem like a Badass Normal, but in reality there's nothing "normal" about her skills that far surpass not just the average human, but even the average sorcerer.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Zigzagged. Her body was permanently scarred after barely surviving death by fire during the Shibuya incident. Later on, her right eye is cut by her father, which leaves her with a slash on her face. Still, she looks way better than a person with her injuries has any right to, somehow keeping her nose and lips intact and even growing back a full head of hair.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Maki is the older twin and when they were children, she used to look after Mai and comfort her when her little sister got scared of the curses she could see but Maki couldn't. Though their relationship has soured in the present day due to Maki leaving Mai and the clan, Maki is still protective of her little sister. She refuses Megumi's offer to make her Zen'in clan head in his place, despite it being her dream, because she knows she wouldn't be able to make the Zen'in clan into a place where Mai truly belongs yet. Mai sacrificing herself to save Maki from their murderous father is enough for Maki to completely wipe out every member of the Zen'in clan in revenge.
  • Blind Without 'Em: Zig-Zagged Trope. Her vision needs no correction, but due to her inability to use cursed energy, she can't see Curses without her glasses. After Mai's death, her Heavenly Restriction's evolution give her Super-Senses able to detect cursed spirit without them like Toji did in the past.
  • Blood Knight: Given the grin she flares when informing Megumi and Nobara of the Joint Festival.
  • Boring, but Practical: Compared to the often highly complicated Cursed Techniques most Sorcerers use, Maki's Heavenly Restriction simply gives her superhuman physicality. It makes her strong enough to physically contend with a Special-Grade while never having to worry about running out of Cursed Energy. However, this strength was inferior to Toji Zenin's, whose Restriction completely wiped his Cursed Energy and was consequently much stronger than Maki. This changed once Mai passed on, and the Restriction became completed.
  • Boyish Short Hair: After the Shibuya incident, she's left with a short bob cut similar to Mai.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She's pretty well-endowed, though it's not really emphasized by her outfit. But this gets Invoked by Panda when talking to her in Jujutsu Kaisen:0 about her chances with Okkotsu. Panda says that her having big boobs gives her a good shot with him, after confirming firsthand that he Has a Type.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: During the Perfect Preparation arc, she delivers a short but cutting one to her father, Ogi, just before their fight. During their rematch, she forgoes talking to deliver a short but cutting blow to his skull.
Ogi: Do you know why the former head of the clan was my older brother Naobito and not me?
Maki: Is it because you're a bastard who is willing to kill children?
  • Characterization Marches On: In Volume 0, Maki as a first-year is much more abrasive, openly rude, and condescending. In the main series, Maki is a second-year, and while she does still have an icy side, she has mellowed out, smiling more often and being more receptive to her companions.
  • Clark Kent Outfit: Maki's outfit switches from long-sleeved to sleeveless after the Shibuya Incident, showing she has some amazingly-toned arms.
  • Contralto of Strength: She has one of the deepest voices amongst the girls and is suitably an Action Girl.
  • Cool Aunt: Technically to Megumi. She's a cousin of his father, Toji Fushiguro, but they have a friendly Senpai-Kohai relationship and behave far more like cousins due to their closeness in age.
  • Cool Big Sis: She's this to the first-years, offering up her support and advice whenever she can. And applies literally to Megumi since she's (technically) his first cousin once removed.
  • Covered with Scars: Courtesy of Jogo in the Shibuya Incident, her arms and face are covered with burn scars; too much for her Healing Factor to handle. She gets even more during her fight with her father.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Unlike other sorcerers, Maki was born unable to use her Cursed Energy. Coming from one of the big three sorcerer families, she was treated poorly and looked down upon as a result. However, the playing field is evened by the speed, strength, and raw ability she displays. This gets reinforced and taken to new levels after Mai's death and her Restriction is fully realized, more or less becoming the advent of Toji Fushiguro; this even has the benefit of allowing her to potentially bypass Domain Expansions, as seen in the Sakurajima Colony arc where Naoya is unable to sense or feel her presence at all until she stabs him from behind.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • The Perfect Preparation arc follows Maki and her dealings with the Zen'in clan.
    • The Sakurajima Colony arc also features Maki as the central character.
  • Don't Think, Feel: When Maki found herself struggling despite her new fully unlocked Heavenly Restricted body, Rokujushi Miyo advised that she'd become entangled and burdened with herself, others and their cursesnote  in the wake of Mai's death, and telling her to instead let her perception of the world flow through her and live freely in the moment of combat without thinking even of victory or defeat. Following his advice further evolves her senses and reflexes, bringing her yet another step closer to Toji.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Maki has been under a partial Heavenly Restriction all her life, meaning that she has all the drawbacks that come from having no access to cursed energy, yet only a sliver of the enhanced physicality that her cousin, Toji Fushiguro, had. Maki made the most of her slim advantage through intense training in order to become one of the most skilled cursed tool users in the world. It's later revealed the reason for the partial Heavenly Restriction is because Cursed Techniques count twins as the same person, and since Mai has a meager amount of cursed energy, so long as she lived, Maki could never reach her full potential. After Mai sacrifices herself to save her sister, Maki becomes as superhumanly powerful as Toji Fushiguro, capable of killing Special Grade Curse Users and Cursed Spirits single-handed.
  • Eye Scream: During her fight with her father, Ogi Zen'in, Maki successfully breaks his Katana in two during a close-combat scuffle, only for Ogi to counter by maintaining the blade's shape with Cursed Energy, allowing him to surprise Maki with a cut straight through her midsection and right eye, breaking her glasses in the process. Its unclear if she's lost the eye afterwards, but she keeps it closed during her ensuring slaughter of the Zen'in clan. Subverted in her reappearance in Chapter 190 with her right eye intact.
  • Foil:
    • To Megumi. He was born with the Zen'in family's coveted Ten Shadows Technique while Maki was born without a cursed technique at all as part of her Heavenly Restriction. Ironically, Megumi is elected to be the next family head, despite Megumi not wanting anything to do with the clan, and Maki wants to be the next family head to spite the House of Zen'in for their disparagement of her.
    • To Yuji, with both of their character arcs being the polar opposite of each other's. Yuji came from a normal background before being thrust into the world of Jujutsu sorcerers. As Yuji was given an essential role that only he could fulfill, he clung onto his sense of duty to society, with it serving as a major source of strength for him. Maki, conversely, was born into the Zen'in clan, and was completely exiled for her entire life, eventually choosing to become a sorcerer just to stick it to her family. After the traumatic events at Shibuya, Yuji denies his own individuality and develops a "cog in the machine" mentality to stop himself from giving into despair, with Nanami's and Nobara's deaths being what solidify his convictions. Maki is betrayed by the Zen'in clan and left for dead. Spurned on by Mai's death at the hands of her father, Maki chooses to burn the Zen'in clan to the ground and embrace her individuality as a complete outlier of Jujutsu society. All that is to say, Yuji derives his strength from denying his own individuality and resolving to commit to the expectations of being a Jujutsu Sorcerer. On the other hand, Maki derives her strength from embracing her individual freedom and throwing society's traditional expectations of being a Jujutsu Sorcerer to the wayside. Tellingly, while both of them are extremely powerful physical fighters, Yuji fights through mastering Cursed Energy while Maki fights through completely rejecting it.
  • Genius Bruiser: Maki has a good grasp on all aspects of the jujutsu world, can stay one step of her opponent in battle and read other people's moves through their personalities. She was the one who came up with the Tokyo Team's initial strategy to counter Aoi Todo's one track mind and brute strength.
  • Genocide from the Inside: She effectively wipes out the entire Zen'in clan, including her own Abusive Parents. Megumi is the only other survivor, and he's completely safe thanks to never wanting anything to do with the family in the first place.
  • Has a Type: Being stronger than her is her absolute minimum requirement, not that she was paying much attention when asked.
  • Healing Factor: Seems to possess an accelerated ability to recover from injury as part of her superhuman physique. Fully Heavenly Restricted, she gave a window of needing a mere 5 minutes to recover from the internal injuries of Naoya ramming into her at mach 3.
  • Hidden Buxom: Panda notes quite bluntly that her boobs are big when discussing whether Maki is Okkutsu's type or not, giving him a thumbs-up when he says he likes them medium leaning towards large. But she never makes any effort to emphasize them through her outfits or behavior. The series also does little to put emphasis on them beyond this scene and mostly gives her Leg Focus.
  • Hyper Space Arsenal: Played with. Maki stores her huge arsenal of cursed weapons in Megumi's shadows, making them an incredibly effective team of Back-to-Back Badasses in battle.
  • I Can't Sense Their Presence: After being stripped of all Cursed Energy by her awakened Heavenly Restriction, Maki has become impossible to detect with Jujutsu; to the point not even Domain Expansions, one of the most powerful techniques in the setting, can properly affect her: As her lack of cursed energy means Domains register her as inanimate and projects the summoned environment over her like it would do a building instead of trapping her inside. And even should she enter a Domain’s barrier of her own free will, the Sure-hit effect can’t automatically target her without any cursed energy to lock on with.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: Maki and Mai are identical twins, but you're unlikely to mix them up because their hairstyles and clothes are completely different. In the anime, Mai's hair is much darker than Maki's, and they have completely different voice actors. Interestingly, Maki's hair and clothing eventually become more similar to Mai's symbolizing Maki taking on her sister's will after her death.
  • Innocently Insensitive: When she first meets Fushiguro and Nobara, she acts like a stern upper-classman to them. But when Panda tells her that they're the first years who are mourning their teammate, she's quick to worry if she came off as a Jerkass.
  • Implausible Fencing Powers: Maki splits a rubber bullet in two with a sword that's not even hers.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She can be rather abrasive at times, as seen when she greets Megumi and Nobara in dour mood. She changes her tune when Panda tells her their teammate had died and she scolds him for not telling her beforehand, showing that she does care for others.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Thanks to her Heavenly Restriction, Maki has superhuman physicality that allows her to move at incredible speed with the reflexes to cut through a bullet and catch one bare-handed as well as hit very hard with her array of cursed tools.
  • Logical Weakness: With no Cursed Energy of her own anymore, Maki has to kill enemy Sorcerers with a Cursed Tool, or risk them becoming a Cursed Spirit from their Dying Curse; because she didn't finish off Naoya herself with one such Tool, he comes back for Revenge within days as a Vengeful Spirit more powerful than ever. Similarly, while she can physically batter and manhandle them Maki can't actually finish cursed spirits off on her own without a cursed tool, since Cursed Spirits require Cursed Energy to exorcise.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: She has quite long hair. After she's burned by Jogo, however, her hair is significantly shortened.
  • Made of Iron: During the final battle in Shinjuku, Maki takes a Black Flash from Sukuna and not only survives but is able to get right back in the fight only a few moments later. After cutting his arm, she takes another Black Flash plus a strengthened dismantle from him, yet she's still not out of the fight. Not even Yuta could withstand this much.
  • Magically Inept Fighter: She has no Cursed Energy and must rely on Cursed Tools to deal damage to Curses. In exchange she boasts strength, speed, and skill that make her one of the most daunting combatants at the Tokyo campus.
  • Muggle Born of Mages: Not exactly. She's unable to use Cursed Energy, but, in exchange, has superhuman physical abilities, so she's more of a nonstandard Sorcerer. But as far as her "family" is concerned, she's this.
  • Multi-Melee Master: She uses naginatas, kunai, katanas, and a three-section staff, all intrinsically imbued with cursed energy so she can exorcise curses.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: It's hidden by the fact that she usually wears concealing clothing that hides her physique, but Maki is built like a brick house. A fact that becomes much more readily apparent Post Shibuya as she takes to a sleeveless top that shows off her muscled arms and broad shoulders, which also coincides with her awakening her Heavenly Restriction soon afterwards and obtaining absurd physical strength.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Upon learning that her mother used the last moments of her life to kill Naoya, Maki reconsiders whether she truly the right choice by killing her. Regretting that she was never able to form a real relationship with her mother, she encourages Noritoshi to be with his mother and to not make the same mistake she did.
  • No-Sell: Played with. Although she's still susceptible to Cursed Techniques, the Sakurajima Colony arc reveals she is virtually "invisible" while inside a Domain as Naoya couldn't sense her whatsoever until she stabbed him from behind.
  • One-Man Army: After awakening to her full Heavenly Restriction following Mai's death, she utterly slaughters the Zen'in clan's entire fighting force singlehandedly. Even the strongest members going all-out with their cursed techniques are unable to stop her.
  • Parrying Bullets: Downplayed. She's capable of parrying bullets with a katana, though she still takes cover to whittle down her opponents' ammo.
  • Patricide: Kills her father Ogi in Chapter 149, in self-defense, after awakening to the potential of her Heavenly Restriction. After everything he'd done, he utterly deserved it.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: To Mai. While Maki is gruff and hot-tempered, she's very much a nice, caring person who wishes to see her friends get stronger. Mai, on the other hand, is insensitive and condescending, looking down on people out of sheer spite.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Upon Mai's death and Maki awakening her full potential as a Heavenly Restricted, she immediately sets out to honour her sister's Last Request to 'Destroy Everything' — brutalising the entire combat forces of the Zen'in clan in the span of a single chapter until only Naoya alone is left standing. When he sarcastically mocks her for her 'cruelty' and asks if she has a human heart in her to commit such devastation against her own clan, Maki's answer is succinct.
Naoya: You're terrible. Don't you have a heart?
Maki: No. She took it with her.
  • Scars Are Forever: She is able to recover from Jogo's assault thanks to healing from Shoko and her own Heavenly Restriction, but she still maintains burn scars.
  • See-Thru Specs: Because Maki has extremely low cursed energy, she can't see curses without a pair of special glasses. Ironically, after losing her cursed energy entirely and becoming fully Heavenly Restricted this is no longer true, as her senses have evolved to superhuman levels such that they can detect curses anyway. After fully realizing this with the help of Rokujushi Miyo, she has a Power High leaping between buildings to dodge Naoya's supersonic ramming attacks as she realizes she'd been living with perpetually foggy glasses compared to what she can really feel and see.
  • Self-Made Orphan: She murders both of her parents by the end of the Perfect Preparation arc. Her father had it coming, but it's implied her mother intentionally invokes this on herself, acting panicked and pathetically begging for her life when Maki confronts her, even talking over Maki's earnest attempt to question her on the reason why she yelled at her to come back before she entered the Vault where Ogi was waiting for her. However, upon Maki giving her a fatal wound, her mother is afterwards depicted as being accepting of her fate, thinking to herself how glad she was to give birth to both twins, implying that she merely wanted Maki to kill her without any guilt or regret in penance for failing to be a proper mother to her.
  • Ship Tease: When Yuta tells Maki that he wants to be like her when she states her goal to become the head of the Zen'in clan, Maki blushes. Panda even says that Maki is softer whenever Yuta is around.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: After the Shibuya Incident, Maki completely alters her uniform to a sleeveless top with a cape and pants, exposing the numerous burn scars on her arms. Following her attaining zero Cursed Energy, she ditches the glasses she used to see Cursed Spirits as well. All of this showcases her growing cynicism after the Shibuya Incident and her subsequent extermination of the Zen'in Clan, while also emphasizing her newly gained strength.
  • Sincerity Mode: Miwa's honest and nice personality compels Maki to ask if she's doing all right, and if she's getting along with Mai, much to Miwa's confusion.
  • Simple, yet Awesome: After Mai’s death fully unlocks her Heavenly Restriction, Maki’s physical capabilities not only skyrocket to the point she can tear through a small army of Grade-1 Sorcerers with her bare hands, but her now total lack of Cursed Energy means Barrier Techniques can’t differentiate her from an inanimate object, rendering her immune to Domain Expansions.
  • Smug Smiler: Usually in prospect of a fight.
  • Soul-Cutting Blade: The sword Mai sacrificed herself to create for Maki is later revealed to be a replica of a Cursed Tool called the Split Soul Katana; a blade that ignores a target’s physical body and instead attacks their soul, allowing it to both bypass most physical defences and inflict grievous damage regardless of which part of the body it actually sliced. Using it properly requires a wielder able to perceive an opponent’s soul, which thanks to their Super-Senses only a Heavenly Restricted person like Toji or Maki can do.
  • Sour Supporter: She tends to be grouchy and aloof around other people, especially underclassmen. From what we see of the Zen'in clan and their treatment of women later on, she has good reasons to have a naturally grumpy attitude, if not worse.
  • Specs of Awesome: Maki wears a pair of glasses that lets her see cursed spirits, and doesn't take away from her coolness in battle.
  • The Stoic: Whether it'd be due to the grave situation, her new-found strength, or both, Maki has become a lot more reserved after the Shibuya Incident. Yuji and Megumi are disturbed by how calm she appears about the news of Tsukumo's death. Even Sukuna possessing Megumi gives her no her pause at all, her only reaction being to ask Yuji to give her a quick briefing and then immediately fight.
  • Strong and Skilled: She possesses physical superhuman abilities due to a Heavenly Restriction and displays incredible skill with weaponry.
  • Super-Senses: After Mai's death unlocks the full potential of her Heavenly Restriction, Maki's senses evolve to the point where she can see Cursed Spirits without the aid of her glasses. She learns to incorporate these enhanced senses into her fighting style thanks to an impromptu sumo therapy session, to the point where she can track movements at Mach 3 without relying on her eyes at all, sensing movement purely by feeling the subtle changes in the temperature and air density of the atmosphere.
  • Super-Speed: Also comes with her Heavenly Restriction. She is fast enough to slice bullets in half and even catch one centimeters away from her forehead. It increases exponentially after her awakening with Maki now being able to avoid the attacks of Naoya's vengeful spirit, who is now moving at Mach 3.
  • Super-Strength: Thanks to her Heavenly Restriction she is massively superhuman, which lets her easily match sorcerers using cursed techniques.
  • Super-Toughness: Able to catch Mai's bullet bare-handed. It still hurts her, but it doesn't even pierce her skin. She was able to survive getting burned alive by Jogo. Though she still maintains permanent scars, she's still able to fight after treatment. Her battle with Naoya has him unleash a full course of martial arts on her at near sonic-speeds without much hindrance to her performance, though she tries to end the fight as quickly as possible before one attack too many would cripple her or kill her.
  • Take Up My Sword: A literal and metaphorical example. As her sister Mai passes away from wounds inflicted on her by her father, she uses her Cursed Technique to craft a sword that resembles the one that Toji Fushigoro used to use. The act costs her her life, and before she dies, she asks Maki to destroy the Zen'in clan. Maki then uses the sword to cut down their father, and declares she will fulfill Mai's wish.
  • Theme Twin Naming: Maki is the twin sister to Mai. The latter syllables are even adjacent in standard kana charts.
  • Tomboyness Upgrade: Maki has a feminine ponytail and her uniform looks quite girly, but after the Shibuya Incident, her hair is cut shorter and her skin is covered with burn scars. Her physical appearance becomes rather brawnier after that.
  • Took a Level in Badass: She was already tough as nails before, but she becomes monstrous after the Perfect Preparation arc. Mai's death and subsequently unlocking her Heavenly Pact in full has numerous characters compare her to Toji Fushiguro.
  • Tough Love: Maki doesn't necessarily believe in being nice to her fellow classmates, and as shown with Yuta has no issue with roughing them up into shape.
  • Tranquil Fury: Maki's expression against her father once Mai dies to give her a fighting chance against the clan says it all, and she cuts him down without a word, refusing to humor him with a fair fight. Her words afterwards affirm that she's only getting started, and she brutally kills almost everyone in the clan except Megumi in subsequent chapters with scarcely an expression on her face.
  • Uncertain Doom: Maki is left on the verge of death after Jogo's attack during the Shibuya Incident, which led to Naobito and Nanami's death. She survives with permanent burn scars, returning in Chapter 144.
  • Unflinching Walk: In a direct echo to the moment where Naoya saw Toji for the first time and realized how truly powerful he was, she performs one of these after defeating Naoya and unleashing her true potential.
  • Unkempt Beauty: Becomes an extreme example after her Trauma Conga Line. As her second page image attests, getting extensive, permanent burn scars, a nasty-looking eye injury, a short, messy haircut, and a considerable increase in muscle mass may have made her more intimidating, but didn't change the fundamental fact that she's an exceptionally pretty young lady.
  • The Un-Favorite: Maki was treated poorly by House Zen'in. Even after she expels herself from her family, Naobito punishes her by making life harder on both her and Mai, preventing her from being promoted past Grade 4.
  • Un-Sorcerer: She's from the Zen'in Clan, one of the Big Three Families of the jujutsu world, but she was born without any cursed energy whatsoever. It's later revealed she was under a partial Heavenly Restriction, and once the criteria for it is fully met, her complete absence of cursed energy turns Maki's restricted body into a superhumanly strong, tough and fast opponent capable of killing Special Grade threats on her own.
  • Walking Armory: She brings all sorts of Cursed Tools to a fight, a polearm, kunai, knives, and so on. She does state in one of the early chapters that she has Panda carry some of them so that she won't get bogged down in a fight, and later has Megumi store many of them in his shadows.
  • The Worf Effect: Downplayed. After having previously been hyped as a nigh-unstoppable force of physical power upon her awakening, Sukuna while in Megumi's body fights both her and Yuji to a stalemate with in physical combat, despite Megumi's resistance dropping his cursed energy output to as low as under 10% every time he attempts to hurt them, confirming that his physical prowess is far from solely due to being in Yuji's body and firmly setting the King of Curses as an extremely formidable opponent even in such a weakened state. Maki even admits to being unnerved with how well Sukuna is able to fight and how strong he is, the first time since her encounter with Naoya's Cursed Spirit form.
  • World's Strongest Woman: With her awakened Heavenly Restriction Maki is equivalent to Toji, and thus at least physically the strongest human being alive bar none. Her newfound physical abilities are phenomenal, she can move like a killing wind, survive being peppered by huge fists made of rock and keep pace with the King of Curses himself in a fistfight. Momo Nishimiya considers Maki a monster because of her awakened capabilities, and the narration calls her a "Demonic Fighter" just like Toji.
  • Wrong Context Magic: As with Toji this is what Maki ultimately becomes once she fully awakens her Heavenly Restriction as every other human being, even non-sorcerers, possess at least some cursed energy but Maki has none. She doesn't read as a living being to cursed techniques but rather an object, indistinguishable from any other nondescript building or rock in the environment. This means that Maki can freely cross barriers, is effectively invisible to cursed energy, and is immune to the sure hit effects of Domain Expansions.

Cursed Technique: Cursed Speech

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/toge_inumaki.png
Click here to see his Jujutsu Kaisen 0 appearance

A Semi-Grade 1 second-year student at Jujutsu High and a quiet yet amicable boy who was born with a powerful Cursed Technique, Cursed Speech.

He was born with the technique of "Cursed Speech", which imbues his words with energy to command the world around him. However, this ability is volatile and as such, he limits vocabulary to rice ball fillings.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: His eyes are light brown in the manga and purple in the anime, though it's somewhat hard to see unless you're looking at him up-close. In a more subtle example, his hair is changed from off-white to platinum blonde in the anime.
  • An Arm and a Leg: While protecting civilians in shelter during the Shibuya Incident, he loses an arm from the destruction caused by Sukuna's Domain and is taken out of the action as a result.
  • Badass Adorable: Inumaki is a stoic yet adorkable quiet boy, and at the same time, he has a powerfully Compelling Voice for a Cursed Technique.
  • Blessed with Suck: While his Cursed Speech is incredibly useful in fights, his ability is volatile and has the chance of setting off a dangerous attack if he isn't careful. This is the reason why he keeps his vocabulary limited to rice ball fillings.
  • Career-Ending Injury: He loses his arm while attempting to protect civilians at Shibuya. Unfortunately, he is unable to recover it and as such is unable to participate in most of Jujutsu High's battles going forward.
  • Cast from Hit Points: Because his sorcery channels a massive amount of cursed energy through a place as vulnerable as the throat, Inumaki suffers damage to his throat and vocal cords every time he uses his power. The potency of the channeled energy and thus the feedback he suffers depends on several factors. Powerful commands like "die" or "explode" require a greater power output than basic ones like "stop", and stronger Curses are harder to affect, so even the weaker commands can get taxing. If Inumaki oversteps his limits, he can wreck his throat and become unable to use his power until it heals.
  • The Comically Serious: He's generally serious and distant, which makes the fact that he primarily says rice ball fillings that much funnier.
  • Compelling Voice: His voice is so compelling that not only can he command people, but even the world itself.
  • Demoted to Extra: Inumaki is one of the more prominent supporting characters early on, but after losing his arm at Shibuya, he's pretty much put out of commission for good as far as the main story is concerned. Notably, Inumaki isn't able to participate in either the Culling Game or the climactic battle against Sukuna at Shinjuku.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: He was originally depicted in Vol 0 with short spiky hair, which was smoothed out in the series proper so he'd look more distinct from Itadori.
  • Elective Broken Language: Naturally, Inumaki understands and speaks Japanese. The issue is that, as a user of Cursed Speech, there's a chance that saying a certain word could set off a dangerous attack. As a result, he prefers only to speak in rice ball ingredients, which won't trigger dangerous curse effects.
  • Glass Cannon: Toge's cursed technique is shown to be highly effective and was strong enough to defeat several curses, but he does not have a high level of durability and that's not even getting into the fact his own technique damages his vocal cords should he keep using more powerful words.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: His ability to give simple commands to a large group is incredibly useful for organizing an evacuation of the horrified crowds and stopping the minor Cursed Spirits and transfigured humans attacking them during the Shibuya Incident, with thousands making it into shelter as a result. Unfortunately it didn't help when Sukuna proceeds to set off a Fantastic Nuke against Mahoraga using his domain.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Not him, but his clan. For as-of-yet explained reasons, Word of God is that the Inumaki clan is a group of pariahs among the world of Jujutsu sorcery to the point that it's standard policy among sorcerers to allow the clan to die out.
  • Intelligible Unintelligible: Despite only speaking in onigiri ingredients, some of the other students can understand him just fine, if this exchange when he and Megumi meet Hanami is any indication. There is some method to this madness, but generally gets Lost in Translation.
    Inumaki: Tuna mayo.note
    Megumi: You're right. Let's call Gojo-sensei.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Because of his Blessed with Suck ability, Inumaki is introduced as and primarily used for comic relief due to his dead-pan speaking affectation paired with the fact he only speaks in rice ball fillings. So whenever he feels the need to intervene and starts speaking in commands, it comes off as this given the strength of his curse.
  • Logical Weakness: Using his ability with words that are particularly weighty and with a lot of compelling intent behind them strains his vocal chords. If his throat hurts or he loses his voice, he naturally can't use his technique effectively or at all.
  • Nice Guy: Inumaki doesn't show it much, being The Stoic who is unable to speak normally, but he's overall very polite and quite amicable to be around.
  • Not a Morning Person: His source of stress is morning assembly.
  • Not So Above It All: One of the Juju Stroll segments has him wearing Maki's skirt to make fun of Nobara (who thinks that it's her skirt he's wearing).
  • Out of Focus: From the Shibuya incident onwards he has had the least amount of screentime of any of the Tokyo students, and no major moments. Yuta has used his cursed speech (Via his copying ability) more than he has during this period.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Inumaki is the shortest male student of Tokyo Jujutsu High, but his Cursed Speech qualifies him as a Semi-Grade 1 sorcerer, which surpasses Megumi, Panda, Nobara, and Maki. Doubles as Purple Is Powerful.
  • Power Incontinence: He can't fully control his ability so he's always at risk of potentially compelling someone or something to act or change. Thus he only speaks using rice ball fillings for his own safety.
  • Purple Is Powerful: He has purple eyes and markings in the anime and has one of the most powerful cursed techniques.
  • Required Secondary Power: Averted. His throat is not able to fully handle the powerful magic he is channeling, causing damage to his vocal chords. To counteract this, he has to keep cough medicine on his person.
  • The Stoic: Doesn't really emote much and is somewhat distant compared with his fellow students.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Downplayed and Subverted. His Cursed Speech makes him dangerous enough that the Kyoto students had to take precaution of him, and he's noticeably the only one of the Tokyo students to not engage in combat with them (besides putting Miwa to sleep). However, he has such limitations to his power that any outrageous words like "die" would trigger greater feedback onto him. On the subverted end, even using simple phrases against Cursed Spirits with a wider power gap than him would damage his throat more rapidly.
  • Strong and Skilled: He wields one of the most powerful cursed techniques in the series and knows how to effectively use it before his throat dries out.
  • Supreme Chef: Like Yuji, Inumaki is also good at cooking among his second-year (formerly first-year) classmates.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Unsurprisingly, onigiri rice balls (particularly tuna with mayo).
  • Troll: According to Word of God, Inumaki loves trolling people. During the Kyoto Goodwill Games, he has Panda rinse Mechamaru of his phone after beating him so he could dial the guy's teammates and tell them to "Sleep". Only worked on Miwa though, as the others were already engaged in battle.
  • Voice of the Legion: When Inumaki deploys his Cursed Speech, his voice sounds chorused and amplified.
  • Words Can Break My Bones: By simply saying what he wants to happen, Toge can induce its effect on a target. This ranges from things like "stop" to "blast away" or even "explode". The stronger the spell, however, the greater the rebound on his body, which prevents him from trying anything too lethal.

Jujutsu: Core Switching (Panda Mode, Gorilla Mode, Triceratops Mode)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/panda_7.png
Click here to see Gorilla Mode

A second-year at Jujutsu High, and the prized creation of Principal Yaga. He is a carefree Cursed Corpse capable of free thought and speech.

Standard Cursed Corpses have only one heart-like "core". Panda, however, has three, which he can switch between in order to take various forms.

  • Ambiguous Situation: The nature of the three souls within Panda and their ultimate fate following the fight with Kashimo is left vague. The focus we get on Panda and his siblings during Chapter 185 is quite surreal and whether or not it takes place within a flashback, Mental World, or a combination of both is left unclear. Specifically, the fates of Gorilla and Triceratops are left up in the air after their spiritual cores are destroyed by Kashimo, with both appearing to permanently leave Panda's body in a dream-like sequence, but no solid explanation is given for what occurred during that moment.
  • An Arm and a Leg: His Gorilla Core's right arm is torn off by Hajime Kashimo during their fight.
  • Armor-Piercing Attack: His Gorilla Core's special ability, Drumming Beat, causes each strike to "resonate" with cursed energy, damagaing enemies even if they block or defend. Like other powerful abilities, this comes with a trade-off, as the Gorilla Core burns through cursed energy at a very fast rate.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: One of his biggest strengths during fights is his ability to quickly assess the situation at hand before coming up with a counterattack.
  • Baritone of Strength: The anime gives him a pretty deep voice, which fits his prowess in battle very well.
  • Beary Friendly: Invoked; as a panda-like being who tends to be polite and friendly, this is a given.
  • Beary Funny: Invoked; he's got plenty of humorous scenes, cracks a lot of jokes and painful bear-related puns and jokes.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's very personable and kind, but in the battlefield; he's an absolute powerhouse.
  • The Big Guy: He's 190 cm, and his skillset is around close combat.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: Being a Cursed Corpse, Panda has three "cores" that serve the same function as hearts, and he will live for as long as at least one of them is intact; the other cores seemingly regenerate while he's not in the middle of a fight.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Poor Panda loses both of his siblings after they're killed by Kashimo, and as such is unable to really contribute in Jujutsu High's battles afterward.
  • Don't Look At Me: His "shy sister" core does not like to be looked at and apparently attempts to kill anyone who meets her gaze.
  • Fetus Terrible: While the exact circumstances are deliberately left vague and symbolic, it is heavily implied through the conditions of Yaga's Cursed Technique, that Panda is the result of stillborn triplets' souls working in symbiosis to create an entirely new lifeform.
  • Fun Size: After getting reduced to just a head by Hajime Kashimo and spending time to heal, Panda returns as a very small, chibi-like version of himself.
  • Gender Bender: During the Culling Game, Panda brief use of his sister core shows that his body changes to that of a woman with a large triceratops head.
  • Genius Bruiser: Because he lacks an innate Cursed Technique, Panda relies on his analysis abilities and combat training to defeat opponents. This is best shown off in his fight with Mechamaru; while Mechamaru has an insane amount of firepower, he simply can't keep up with Panda's immense technique and insight. As such, Panda quickly gains the upper hand on him multiple times, even when he shoots out two of his three cores.
  • Golem: Panda is a doll created by Principal Yaga, though unlike the others, he can think, learn, and grow.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: The only weapons that Panda has been seen using in the series are a pair of knuckle dusters in combination with the martial arts he's drilled with Yaga since he was a cub.
  • Humans Are Special: Though he states he's never felt jealous of humans, Panda seems to admire their complexities and ambitions, partly shaped by his experiences with Yuta.
  • Iron Butt Monkey: Panda isn't incompetent or weak but he frequently ends up the subject of a new powerful character's Cursed Technique and having a hilarious reaction as a result of his nonchalance about the damage he's taking.
  • Jobber: After unexpectedly reuniting with Yuji at the underground Gachinko Fight Club as opposing combatants, Panda trades information with Yuji as they pretend to fight before throwing the match so that Yuji could meet with Hakari afterwards. He is 'defeated' in a comically dramatic manner, to the point that Yuji calls him a bad actor.
  • Killer Teddy Bear: An unusual non-evil example of this trope. As a Cursed Corpse, he is a stuffed toy animated by curse energy, and he is a fierce and tough fighter.
  • Losing Your Head: Thanks to his status as a Cursed Corpse, Panda can sustain severe damage as long as his spiritual core is not destroyed. When fighting Hajime Kashimo, he is exploded and reduced to just his head, but still can communicate and even maintains his sense of humor while denying Kashimo's interrogation.
  • Mind Hive: Yaga reveals that Panda's three spiritual cores are actually the "soul information" of three separate people that coexist within Panda's body. The three "souls" had to be compatible in order to observe and keep each other in check, which is how Panda's own soul and self-awareness was first formed. The three core souls eventually "stabilized" and began producing the unique self-sustaining cursed energy that Panda now uses.
  • Multiform Balance: Panda can shift forms by cycling between his three "cores". Panda Core is stated to be a balanced, Jack of All Stats type, while Gorilla Core is more of a Lightning Bruiser with a strong offensive focus. His third core, the "shy sister", is revealed to be Triceratops Core and is presumably centered around defense due to its appearance, but the form never gets to properly show off its abilities before Kashimo immediately hit it in the face with a lightning bolt.
  • Nice Guy: Panda is one of the most outright amicable and kind characters in the cast. Despite Mechamaru's hatred towards him, Panda holds no grudge, tries to identify with his situation, and only gets "kinda pissed" after Mechamaru repeatedly tries to kill him. Even afterwards, he offers to help Mechamaru out with his situation and says he'll come and visit sometime.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Panda is not a Panda.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: He often serves as the main comic relief amongst the cast, finding some way to make fun of the situation.
  • Shipper on Deck: During the Volume 0 prequel, Panda begins shipping Yuta and Maki after he humorously picks up on the tension between them.
  • Temper-Ceratops: His sister core is revealed to be in the form of a massive triceratops who gets angry at anyone that looks her in the eye.
  • Token Nonhuman: He's the only living Cursed Corpse among the main cast of humans and curses.
  • Training from Hell: He trains his fellow students for the Goodwill Event by chasing them down. As a panda, he could theoretically run 20mph, but as a Cursed Corpse, he can probably run much faster than that besides. To keep this in perspective, the average "fast" human runner can only go up to 15mph, and while a high-class sprinter can bump that number to as high as 28mph, they can only go that fast for a short period of time.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: While not apparent in the early parts of the series as several characters point out the absurdity of his existence, later arcs feature Panda interacting with non-sorcerers who react with minimal shock (or none at all) at the sight of a giant, talking panda that walks around on its hind legs. This gets played straight to horrific effect during the Culling Game, where Hajime Kashimo meets Panda and doesn't bat an eye for even a moment before determining that he is an enemy and attacking.
  • The Worf Effect:
    • This trope is invoked by Panda in his plan for Yuji to meet Hakari at the Gachinko Fight Club; since Hakari personally knows Panda and considers him to be a strong fighter, Yuji easily defeating him in a dramatic match would catch Hakari's attention and lead to a meeting between the two.
    • During the Culling Game, Panda is subjected to a savage beatdown after running into Hajime Kashimo, showing just how wide the gap between a skilled but relatively average modern sorcerer and an ancient Old Master of Jujutsu is.

Cursed Techniques: Copy, Vengeful Spirit Rika Orimoto

Click here to see his present day appearance

The main protagonist of Volume 0. Formerly anxious and meek, Yuta becomes much more confident, composed, and affable during Volume 0. In the events of the main series, Yuta is a second-year sorcerer, and was overseas before reappearing during the aftermath of the Shibuya Incident.

Due to a distant relation to the legendary sorcerer Michizane Sugawara, Yuta was born with one of the largest reserves of Cursed Energy ever recorded, with which he's learned to perform complex techniques such as high-level body reinforcement and the Reverse Cursed Technique. He also wields the Innate Technique "Copy", which allows him unconditionally duplicate other Innate Techniques, and Rika Orimoto, an extremely powerful Special Grade Cursed Spirit who serves as his Guardian Entity.

This all cements him as one of the four Special Grade Sorcerers alive in present day, and he's considered to be second only to his mentor Satoru Gojo.

  • The Ace: He's gained immense renown after the events of 0. During the Culling Game, after easily defeating Dhruv Ladkawala, the pillar of Sendai City's barrier with the highest number of points out of the four pillars, he is outright stated to be the second greatest sorcerer in the modern ages under only Gojo himself.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Was lonely as a kid and bullied a lot growing up. As a result, at the start of Volume 0 he has trouble interacting with others.
  • Ascended Extra: Downplayed. He was already the main character of 0, but was Demoted to Extra in the main series due to being on a mission in Africa. Following Shibuya however, he returns to the series and acts as one of the more important characters, even getting the "Sendai Colony" arc to himself. After the Culling Game, he's effectively taken the position of deuteragonist from Megumi after Sukuna pulled a Grand Theft Me on him.
  • Beast and Beauty: Yuta's relationship with Rika is a gender-flipped example, and a twisted one at that. They were childhood friends who promised to marry each other when they grow up until Rika died from a car accident. Yuta unwittingly cursed Rika's spirit, causing her to become a cursed spirit. She becomes violently protective of him, and eventually they use their Power of Love to defeat Geto. Upon being released from her curse, Rika tells Yuta that she was happy being by his side (and arguably more so after her original death).
  • Bottomless Magazines: Yuta's stores of Cursed Energy are so large they could essentially be considered boundless – however, a great deal of them is stored within Rika herself, meaning Yuta requires her as a medium to channel his power. After releasing Rika at the end of Volume 0, her soulless copy continues to hold much of his power along with his arsenal of weapons and techniques, but in this case it's downplayed in that his pool of Cursed Energy isn't quite bottomless, but hitting the bottom is very hard. After the other major Sendai players take turns playing ping-pong with and mutilating Yuta and him healing his injuries with Positive Energy, he is left drained and can only fill his Energy back up by using Rika, but this he can only maintain this state for 5 minutes for now.
  • The Bus Came Back: As of Chapter 137, Yuta is back in Tokyo, and now assigned to carry out the immediate execution of Yuji Itadori.
  • Character Development: The events of Volume 0 see him grow from a scared, insecure Shrinking Violet to The Ace of the students who is able to take on Geto in a fight and win.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: A twisted take on this with Rika. They were childhood friends who promised to marry each other when they grow up until Rika died from a car accident. This led to Yuta unwittingly cursing Rika's spirit, causing her to become a cursed spirit who haunts him and harms others near him. After defeating Geto, the curse on Rika gets dispelled when Yuta's finally accepted her death, with the two bidding goodbye and Rika telling Yuta she was happy being by his side.
  • Childhood Marriage Promise: Him and Rika were very close as children and promised to get married when they grew up, even exchanging engagement rings. This connection is what bonds Rika's spirit to Yuta after death, and why she is so violently protective of him.
  • Color Motifs: White. In contrast to the usual dark uniform of Jujutsu High, Yuta wears a white jacket with matching white shoes. In addition to being a symbol of virtue, reflecting his Nice Guy personality, white is a colour associated with mourning, foreshadowing Volume 0's reveal that Yuta's grief over Rika's death is what's keeping her trapped as a Cursed Spirit.
  • Combat Medic: Thanks to his vast cursed energy reserves he can heal himself and others with the reverse cursed technique and fight with a katana by reinforcing his body with cursed energy, on top of his copied cursed techniques.
  • Combo Platter Powers: His cursed technique allows him to copy the techniques of other sorcerers, allowing him to use a wide variety of abilities when his power is fully released.
  • Continuity Snarl: His Guardian Entity Rika was laid to rest and moved on to the afterlife in the ending of the Prequel, yet Yuta can still summon her and use her to bind Yuji in place long enough to stab him in the chest, to attack cursed spirits for him. It's eventually revealed that it's not the actual Rika, but rather a duplicate of her Cursed Spirit form created by Yuta's Innate Technique. It still shows shades of being semi-autonomous and Yuta likely refers to it by the same name for convenience's sake, as well as not to hurt the copy's feelings.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: Has these in the present-day. Combined with his disheveled black hair and pale skin, it makes him seem much more intimidating in the present, especially when he's assigned to be Yuji's executioner.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The Sendai Colony arc plays out from Yuta's perspective and features no other main or supporting characters besides him.
  • Deus Exit Machina: He's one of only a handful of Special Grade sorcerers and boasts immense power that Satoru believes will one day surpass his. But he spends the first part of story out of the country, meaning that he isn't able to intervene when the Special Grade curses all come crawling out to wreak havoc.
  • Domain Holder: Yuta's Domain is called "Authenticity in Mutual Love"note , a decayed urban environment with several katanas embedded in the ground, each representing Yuta's copied cursed techniques. Yuta can apply any cursed technique of his choosing as the domain's sure-hit effect, but the copied techniques drawn from the katanas are random, with not even him knowing which one until he pulls it out, and once the technique is used, the katana goes with it. However, only Yuta can draw the katanas and there are an unlimited number of them. He initially reveals that he can perform the technique during the Mêlée à Trois between him, Ishigori, and Uro. However, the clash against Ishigori and Uro's own Domain Expansions and the recently-revived Kurourushi intruding causes the whole mess to explode from sheer instability. It is only properly revealed during his fight with Sukuna.
  • Double Agent: Turns out to be this when, instead of executing Yuji on behalf of the jujutsu higher-ups as he was ordered, spares him because of the request Gojo made for him to take care of Yuji should something happen to him before he was sealed. He then goes on to work with Yuji and the others in the Culling Games.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: Though his hair was much like Megumi's in the prequel, the cover of Volume 0 and the few panels of Yuta in the main series show him with his hair grown out and in a longer, straighter style.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Pale skin, messy black hair, and combined with his eyebags contribute to his eerie appearance in the present-day story.
  • Empty Eyes: His stint as Yuji's executioner has him depicted at times with solid black eyes, emphasizing his killing intent. This is technically a facade though, as he has no plans to truly kill Yuji.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: Appears to have these under his eyes to highlight his stressful life and solitary nature.
  • Famous Ancestor: He is revealed to be a descendant of Sugawara no Michizane, a legendary sorceror who is also an ancestor of the Gojo clan.
  • Foil: To Yuji. Both were initially sentenced to execution for something without their control, and became sorcerers as a way out of their fates. Both initially fought to find meaning in their living. However, Yuta started as a quiet, shrinking teenager compared to Yuji's enthusiastic and open attitude. Like Yuji, he's affable to those he cares about, yet holds a terrifying conviction to kill when he believes he must. In Shibuya, it's noted that his fighting style is based around reinforcing his weak physical body with his immense amounts of cursed energy — Yuji notes this is the exact opposite of his own approach.
  • The Force Is Strong with This One: Has obscene amounts of cursed energy greater than even Gojo's himself, letting him shape it into any technique. The end of Volume 0 reveals it's because he's a descendant of Michizane Sugawara, the ancestor of the Gojo clan. When he encounters Yuji and Choso, they immediately note his cursed energy to be on par with Gojo's and call it creepy.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: With the other heavy hitters of the academy, Hakari (Fighter), and Maki (Thief), Yuta is a mage, with his ranged attacks, versatility and sheer skill at sorcery.
  • Friendless Background: Grew up friendless thanks to Rika haunting him coupled with his timidness from being bullied, making it hard for him to connect with others. He gradually becomes more sociable as he befriends the other students in Volume 0.
  • Grew a Spine: His Character Development in Volume 0. Yuta goes from a timid kid who wants the confidence to feel that he deserves to live, to a more confident individual through gaining friends whose goal is to set free Rika, culminating in him gaining the power and willpower to act on it to defeat Geto.
  • Guardian Entity: Yuta is constantly protected by a powerful curse known as Rika, the persistent spirit of his childhood sweetheart. It is later revealed that Rika's power and form came entirely from his own body, making her closer to a Fighting Spirit. He later demonstrates he can deliberately create tiny copies of Rika by plucking strands of his hair to turn them into shikigami.
  • Hammerspace: Apart from acting as a repository of his Cursed energy and Copied techniques, Rika's copy can also store numerous cursed tools and other items for Yuta, much like Megumi's shadows or Geto's Inventory Curse.
  • Healing Hands: Thanks to his vast amount of cursed energy and quick learning, Yuta has learned how to use Reversed Cursed Technique, which he first displays when he heals his friends after they get injured by Geto. He's become better at using it in the present, stabbing Yuji and technically killing him but immediately healing him to save his life.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: The protagonist of Volume 0 and learns to wield a katana, which is his main weapon during the current story. He's perfectly fine with fighting barehanded however, albeit it notably depends more on brute force compared to characters dedicated to hand to hand combat, like Yuji and Todo.
  • Hour of Power: Downplayed, as Yuta possesses great strength even without his Cursed Technique, but he can only use his full power for five minutes at a time after putting on his engagement ring to fully unleash his Cursed Energy reserve and assortment of techniques.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Part of his motivation in the prequel, Yuta desires a connection with someone and wants to feel needed.
  • Jerkass Façade: As revealed in Chapter 143, his willingness to kill Yuji was an act. He planned with Gojo, in the case that anything happened to take him out of the picture, to be given the role of executioner before anyone else to ensure that Yuji would survive, and reassures him in private that he isn't to blame for the mass death in Shibuya.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Yuta wields a katana, and as one of the strongest sorcerers in the story he imbues it with his incredible amounts of cursed energy to unleash powerful attacks, using it as his main form of combat. Heck, his Domain Expansion is full of them!
  • Legendary in the Sequel: By the time of the main series, Yuta is famous as being a prodigy of the Tokyo Branch and the youngest sorcerer to be ranked Special Grade. Todo is even disappointed when he learns that Yuta being overseas prevents him from being part of the Goodwill Games.
  • Light Is Good: He wears a white jacket with matching white shoes, and is a kind guy who wants to protect his friends and uses his sorcerer powers for good.
  • Magic Knight: Yuta gets a katana from Gojo through which he can channel Rika's cursed energy. After training with Maki and experience, he learns to properly wield it but it later breaks during his fight with Geto. In the present-day, he uses a new katana as his main weapon which he carries in his black case, fighting mostly with swordplay reinforced by Magic Enhancement from his vast cursed energy.
  • Meaningful Name: Yuta means "One With Many Friends", fitting with how Volume 0 focuses on Yuta, who had a lonely childhood, interacting with others and making new friendships with the other student.
  • The Mourning After: This is revealed to be why Rika is around — Yuta unknowingly cursed her spirit after she died from the car accident and couldn't accept her death. Only once he gets closure when he professes his love for her during the fight with Geto is Rika's spirit freed.
  • Nice Guy: Yuta is a kind guy who cares deeply for his newfound friends, and maintains that friendliness and becoming more sociable as a full-fledged jujutsu sorcerer, sympathizing with Yuji and vowing to protect him.
  • Power Copying: By the end of Volume 0, Yuta can easily copy techniques like Inumaki's Cursed Speech. This is later revealed to be his actual Cursed Technique - "Copy". However, while Okkotsu can apparently copy a vast number of different cursed techniques, he requires "Rika" to "store" them and can only use them himself when directly connected to her.
  • Power Incontinence: He could barely control Rika at the start of his sorcerer career, requiring a lot of training from Gojo before he could properly harness her power. it's eventually revealed he was born with obscene amounts of cursed energy, even more than Gojo, thanks to being a descendant of Michizane Sugawara, so much so that as a child he accidentally cursed Rika, turning her into one of the strongest cursed spirits. After becoming a Jujutsu High student he begins training, and even after some he still accidentally shatters his katana during his fight with Geto from imbuing it with too much cursed energy. By the current story, he's much more trained and one of the few special-grade sorcerers, considered to be only under Gojo himself.
  • Power Limiter: After freeing Rika herself, Yuta can only maintain his connection to her copy (and thus, his main arsenal) for five minutes at a time by putting on Rika's wedding ring.
  • The Power of Love: Through a Binding Vow at the cost of his life and Yuta confessing his love for her, Rika gets the power to defeat Geto and exorcise his spirits. He survives and Rika's spirit is freed thanks to his love confession, which gives him the emotional closure to move on from her death and free Rika from the curse he accidentally cast on her spirit as a child.
  • Put on a Bus: When the main series rolls around, Yuta is simply stated by Megumi to be "abroad". A cover page shows him working in Africa.
  • Red Mage: Along with the destructive Innate Techniques he's copied like Inumaki's Cursed Speech, Uro's Sky Manipulation and Sukuna's Cleave , he's mastered the Reverse Cursed Technique too.
  • Replacement Goldfish: The Rika seen during the main series is eventually revealed to be a soulless copy left behind for Yuta by Rika Orimoto herself, acting as a semi-autonomous storage of cursed tools, techniques and Yuta's energy reserves. That said, Yuta still treats her with a great deal of affection and respect.
  • Revive Kills Zombie: Having mastered the Reversed Cursed Technique, Yuta can now imbue his attacks with positive cursed energy. While this would heal a human opponent, it will instantly exorcise even special-grade Cursed Spirits. Which is exactly what he eventually does to Kurourushi, one-shotting the Curse.
  • Rogue Protagonist: He is the main character of Volume 0, but his reintroduction to the series has him as the Arc Villain hunting down Yuji. Ultimately subverted when it turns out he was a Double Agent playing a part, but he sure was intimidating for a couple of chapters.
  • Ship Tease: When Yuta tells Maki that he wants to be like her when she states her goal to become the head of the Zen'in clan, Maki blushes. He also becomes furious with Rika when she gets jealously aggressive with Maki's unconscious body, telling the Cursed Spirit that he owes Maki a lot and that [she] should handle her body with care "...as if she were a butterfly or flower."
  • Shrinking Violet: Quiet and deeply insecure, appearing to have resigned himself to isolation at the beginning of the prequel. He eventually overcomes these traits through Character Development.
  • Strong and Skilled: By the present day, after training as a student and spending a year abroad Yuta has great control over his massive cursed energy, reinforcing his body with constant flows of cursed energy in battle and channeling it through his katana. He can even both kill Yuji and instantaneously bring him back to life with the reverse cursed technique. However, even he admits he's not at Gojo's level yet thanks to his teacher's Six Eyes.
  • Super Weapon, Average Joe: Despite lacking a Cursed Technique and having never been in a fight before, Yuta started his career as Sorcerer already considered Special-Grade. Entirely because Rika was murderously obsessed with protecting him and never leaves his side.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: It's revealed at the end of the prequel series that Rika's seemingly limitless Cursed Energy reserves actually belongs to him, and comes from his lineage as a distant relative of the Gojo clan that produced Satoru.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Wears the engagement ring that Rika gave him when they made their Childhood Marriage Promise right before she was killed in a car accident in Volume 0. He's no longer regularly wearing it in the current story. He continues wearing it in the main series for whenever he needs to bring out Rika in full (and with her his power reserves and Copied techniques).
  • Tritagonist: Yuta takes on this narrative role upon his return from his time abroad. He's even featured on the Weekly Shonen Jump covers with Yuji and Megumi twice.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Gojo for being his teacher and helping him throughout the events of Volume 0. So much so that he follows Gojo's request to help Yuji and defies jujutsu headquarter's orders for Yuta to execute him. He later intends on killing Kenjaku himself so that his teacher doesn't have to kill his best friend a second time.
  • Unstoppable Rage: At seeing his friends pushed to near-death by Suguru Geto, he becomes so angry he manifests Rika in full and takes Geto on himself, claiming bitterly that he'll kill him.
  • Walking Armory: Due to the nature of Rika and his copying powers, Yuta gains access to an arsenal of numerous Cursed tools and a number of Copied techniques whenever he needs to bring out her power in full.

Third Years

    Kinji Hakari

Kinji Hakari

Cursed Technique: Private Pure Love Train

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kinji_hakari___manga.png
"I love fever. Fever is gambling and gambling is life. And love is control. With my Fight Club, I want to eventually control this country's fever."
A third year student at Jujutsu High currently on suspension after a fallout with Jujutsu higher-ups. He runs an underground fight club where he books Jujutsu sorcerers to fight for money. He is said to be stronger than Yuta Okkotsu, at least according to the man himself, and even one of the few people along with Yuta and Yuji to potentially surpass Satoru Gojo.

Hakari's Innate Technique, Private Pure Love Train allows him to spontaneously create and manipulate aspects of a Pachinko Machine themed around a romance manga of the same name, such as throwing reserve balls or entrapping his opponent in sliding rail car doors.

His technique also comes prepackaged with a Domain Expansion known as Idle Death Gamble that puts Hakari and his opponent inside the mechanics of a romance Shoujo Manga themed pachinko machine with stylized preview performances, and if Hakari can score a jackpot, he gains unlimited cursed energy for 4 minutes and 11 seconds.

In addition, his Cursed Energy differs from most Sorcerers in that it's inherently damaging to the touch, making him an especially dangerous hand-to-hand fighter.

  • All There in the Manual: The fanbook reveals that, during the events of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, he was involved an altercation with a conservative Jujutsu higher-up which ended with Hakari beating the living tar out of him, leading to his suspension.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Whether or not Hakari and Kirara are dating. Kinji is introduced with his hand planted firmly on their ass while cuddling on a couch, and they're noted to spend a lot of time together. That being said, they are running an illegal fight club and Kirara's working as Kinji's security system, but it's left up in the air.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Hakari loses his left arm during the climax of his fight with Kashimo, and he is unable to regenerate it due to losing it right after his jackpot bonus had ended, which also prevents him from forming the hand signs for his Domain Expansion. He seems nonchalant about it and simply says he will get it healed later. He does get it healed through unknown means offscreen. Due to the fact that fellow amputee Hana couldn't get back her arm even though she was in contact with two RCT users Yuta and Shoko, it's likely this is all due to his own power.
  • Armour Piercing Attack: Kinji's Cursed Energy is stated to be unique in that, unlike most Sorcerers, it has a consistency similar to barbs or thorns, rendering it damaging to the touch. During his duel with Yuji, the first year notes that it doesn't matter how much or how little force Kinji puts into his blows, they just hurt regardless, like he's getting hit with a bat covered in razor wire.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Most of Jujutsu's combatants are highly aggressive, but Hakari just doesn't stop - in his fight with Kashimo he never gives the man a second to breathe, and even when he's fatally injured, he just re-rolls his Domain Expansion and goes right back to pummeling him. When Kashimo finally manages to crawl out of the melee, convinced that he's put Hakari down for good, Hakari promptly lays him out with one final punch and claims victory.
There's still five seconds [of my Jackpot] remaining. Should I go back up to the surface?- NO! I want to attack! "BLEBLOBLO!" (Muffled underwater "LET'S GO!")
    • Whereas every other sorcerer and even cursed spirits will pause fighting for a few moments to heal any injuries they incur in battle, Hakari doesn't stop even while he's injured and will attack right as he's healing. It helps that he heals faster than he fights too.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: While at first he is dismissive of Yuji, Megumi and Panda's pleads, he is visibly dismayed after learning that Gojo was sealed and Yaga was killed, as they were people who seemed to understand him and put up with him when he was at his worst, to where he finally agrees to help out with the Culling Game.
  • Blood Knight: It's clear during fight with Kashimo that Hakari is having the time of his life in a fight that sees one of his arms ripped off, his head almost explode, a hole blown in his abdomen, and poisoning by chlorine gas.
Well done, Kashimo. I've never come this close to dying so many times in one day.
  • Born Lucky: According to himself, he's never had to go above thirty spins on a pachinko machine, which is absurdly lucky as Pachinko machines are made to guzzle up spins in ways slot machines could only dream of. Kashimo calls him overwhelmingly lucky when he instantly rolls a Jackpot as soon as he opens his Domain while on his last legs from an attack via Improvised Lightning Rod, despite having 1/239 or 0.4% chance of getting it.
  • Bottomless Magazines: Winning the jackpot with his Idle Death Gamble gives Hakari Infinite Cursed Energy for four minutes, eleven seconds. Furthermore the unlimited Cursed Energy refreshes his Domain Expansion, allowing him to immediately attempt to spin another jackpot afterwards.
    • This is especially notable because unlike fellow Prodigy Yuta, who has apparently unlimited cursed energy but can run out eventually, Hakari actually has truly unlimited cursed energy.
    • And he's also similar to but unlike Gojo who doesn't have infinite CE, but effectively has it due to his Six Eyes giving him infinitesimal CE cost for all his techniques that should use a lot of CE normally.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Yuta describes Hakari as moody, but that he'd be stronger than him when he gets serious. Maki claims Yuta’s being self-deprecating. However, Hakari's technique involves him gambling to get Infinite Cursed Energy, which automatically comes with RCT and a power boost, making him perfect to perpetually stalemate someone as powerful as Uraume.
  • Close-Range Combatant: His Armour Piercing Attack hits hard enough to put Yuji, typically unmatched in melee combat, on the backfoot. After suffering through an Endurance Duel with the third-year to prove his "fever", Yuji was glad that Hakari could be reasoned with after only a handful of punches. After getting his jackpot, Hakari favors fighting hand to hand and overwhelming his opponents or outlasting them.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The unlimited Cursed Energy provided by his "jackpot" gives him a literal Power High. This even causes him to briefly space out during his fight with Hajime Kashimo, taking several blows and a flying knee to the face because he was too busy reveling in pleasure to defend himself before retaliating in equal measure.
  • Domain Holder: He possesses a Domain Expansion called Idle Death Gamble, first shown during his battle with Charles Bernard, which resembles the older "rules based" Domains rather than the newer "instant kill" types. Placing him and his opponent inside the mechanics of a Pachinko Machine which constantly plays until Hakari achieves a jackpot, and granting him a huge boost in power when he does.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: Early glimpses of Hakari showed him having a much different, darker hairstyle, rather than the lighter, bleached style he sports in present day.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: With the other heavy hitters of the school, Yuta (Mage) and Maki (Thief), he fits the role of a fighter, with his straightforward and simple attacks, lack of versatility and range, all complemented by his ridiculous healing factor.
  • Flash Step: While his jackpot bonus is active, Hakari can move at incredible speeds that make him appear to teleport.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: All Megumi and Yuji's seniors who have met Kinji before the Culling Game consider him a good-for-nothing.
  • The Force Is Strong with This One: When he hits the Jackpot, Hakari has unlimited Cursed Energy.
  • The Gambling Addict: Hakari enjoys gambling a bit too much, even getting himself in money trouble that cost him relationships in the past. He also incorporates gambling into his personal philosophy, believing life to be a gamble that every person takes part in to satisfy their own passion.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: His Technique has very limited offensive applications besides Improvised Weapons, making Hakari one of the only Sorcerers alongside Yuji and Todo who has to use straight-up brawling to put his opponents away every time.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: Due to the extremely effective Healing Factor he gets from his jackpot, life-ending injuries mean nothing to Hakari. Case in point, almost having his head exploded by Kashimo just gets him to compliment Kashimo.
  • "Groundhog Day" Loop: Hakari's Domain Expansion, Idle Death Gamble, places him and his opponent in scenarios from the romance manga Private Pure Love Train that play out repeatedly until Hakari is either defeated or hits a "jackpot".
  • Healing Factor: Hakari cannot normally perform Reverse Cursed Technique to heal, but after hitting a jackpot with his Domain Expansion, his body begins reflexively using the technique to keep his body from getting destroyed by the unlimited cursed energy flowing through him. This also makes his essentially immortal, as his body will instantly heal from any major damage he receives within the brief period his jackpot bonus is active. Hakari's healing factor is so great that he has even survived getting attacked in the two sure ways to kill a RCT user, brain destruction and poison. This appears to apply even if he loses a limb. In contrast, Shoko and Yuta, both capable of consciously applying the technique, are unable to grow back Hana's arm, yet Hakari was more worried about if his shoes were intact than Uraume breaking his leg off after they froze it.
    • His infinite Cursed Energy and unconscious usage of it also ensure that he doesn't have to worry about his CE reserves and his RCT output dropping or slowing down. Uraume has even stated in terms of RCT and healing alone, Hakari's ability during his jackpot phase surpassed even that of both Gojo and Sukuna.
  • Hot-Blooded: He believes that everyone is driven by their own personal "fever", or a desire to change something in their lives. He embraces his own "fever" and gets easily worked up, even refusing to listen to reason because he doesn't want to "feel cold". In order to get him to listen to their offer in the end, Yuji has to appeal to him and get his own 'fever' worked up in the process, which he accomplishes by taking every attack Kinji deals out whilst refusing to retaliate, showcasing his own toughness and conviction to his goals.
  • Hour of Power: If Hakari hits a "jackpot" with his Domain Expansion, he is given a temporary "bonus" of unlimited cursed energy for 4 minutes and 11 seconds. He can reactivate his Domain Expansion after this period and can restart the time limit if he hits another jackpot. This obviously also carries over between fights, allowing Hakari to come in fully locked, loaded and immortal against Kashimo by defeating an easy opponent in Charles immediately beforehand to score himself a Jackpot.
  • Implied Love Interest: It's strongly implied, short of outright being stated, that Hakari's in a relationship with Kirara. In addition to Kirara acting like a Clingy Jealous Girl at times, when alone the two of them act far more intimately than one would expect from just friends, like Kirara stroking Hakari's chin while Hakari has his hand on Kirara's butt.
  • Improbable Weapon User: He attempts to chop Yuji in half with subway shutters conjured out of nowhere slamming together at his neck and torso, after throwing Yuji's footing off with a pair of doors opening under his feet, via his Cursed Technique. This turns out to be a result of his technique manifesting the pachinko scenario "Friday Night Final Train" in reality. Within his Domain, he also utilizes pachinko balls as projectiles flicked from his hands.
  • Infodump: Hakari's Domain Expansion forces a long and convoluted explanation of his Domain's rules into his opponent's mind, disorienting his enemy with an influx of information while also fulfilling the "showing one's hand" binding vow. Charles begins to shout at him not to fill his brain with gambling-related garbage about one of his favorite mangas as a result of this.
  • Invincibility Power-Up: When he gets his jackpot and the song starts playing, he's basically invincible for 4 minutes and 11 seconds.
  • Japanese Delinquents: He's somewhere between a hyper-modernized version of this and outright Yakuza with Fight Club overtones. The reason he was Put on a Bus before the series began was because he beat the shit out of a conservative higher-up during 0.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He has a very abrasive and hot-headed personality, but Kirara says that his passion always burns hottest when helping others.
  • The Juggernaut: What successfully hitting a "jackpot" with his Domain Expansion turns him into. The unlimited Cursed Energy bonus and the instinctive Reverse Curse Technique means that for 4 minutes and 11 seconds Hikari becomes absurdly strong, inexhaustible and impossible to injure, allowing him to simply power through his opponents.
  • Large Ham: Hakari is already normally Hot-Blooded but under the influence of his Domain Expansion's jackpot he loses all restraint, punctuating his fights with exultant shouting and spontaneous Michael Jackson-like poses mid battle.
"I'm burnin' up here! Bring me an ice-cold one!"
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Confesses to Kashimo that he's caught "Manga Brain" from the fight with Charles when he's in yet another Power High from a Jackpot.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Hakari is essentially unkillable for a short period of time after hitting a jackpot with his Domain Expansion due to instantly regenerating, and can immediately renew his invulnerability afterwards if he reactivates his Domain and hits another jackpot.
  • Personality Powers: Hakari is highly aggressive, uses deception and Info Dump to his advantage in battle and his Cursed Energy is specifically noted to feel coarse like a file or like getting smacked with a serrated bat. In other words, he is a Cardshark who's Cursed Energy feels like a shark's skin.
  • Potty Emergency: One of the mid-level "reach scenarios" of his Domain Expansion is literally named "Potty Emergency" and plays a scene depicting the manga's comic relief character in a rush to make it to the train station's restroom.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Hakari is a hot-blooded and violent bruiser who also has dyed pink hair and a fondness for romance manga, to the point where his entire Cursed Technique is themed around a Shoujo manga series. The hand sign Hakari makes for his Domain Expansion is also the mudra of Benzaiten, the only female member of the Seven Lucky Gods and the goddess of wealth, music, literature, love and femininity.
  • Required Secondary Powers: His instinctive use of Reverse Curse Technique after a jackpot is necessary to keep the unlimited Cursed Energy flowing through him from ripping his own body apart.
  • Shout-Out: His first outfit is identical to one worn by Tyler Durden in Fight Club, specifically the clothing Durden wears when the film's infamous twist is revealed. Hakari runs a similar underground fight club like Durden, which also utilizes the same type of rules regarding secrecy.
  • Smarter Than They Look: Hakari figures out that Yuji is working under Jujutsu High by offering him something to drink. When Yuji says he doesn't want anything alcoholic, Hakari takes the opportunity to bring up that Gojo is a lightweight drinker too, and when Yuji fakes not knowing him, he's immediately pinpointed as a Jujutsu High student because there's no way a Sorcerer wouldn't know of Gojo at least by name and the only reason Yuji would hide that from him would be to try and get close to him. During his battle with Kashimo, he gets the idea to deplete Kashimo's electric cursed energy by throwing him into the ocean and forcing him to disperse it. He does this because he's thinking of a manga (like Jojo's Part 4) in which this tactic was used.
  • Superpower Lottery: Exaggerated. Hakari's technique makes him literally play the lottery to win Infinite Cursed Energy, RCT that is fully automatic and can heal him beyond two ways to kill an RCT user and the ability to use his Domain over and over again.
    • He also plays this straight in that his CT and domain are one and the same. Due to how hard it is to form Domains and control their properties, whereas Hakari can easily manipulate those same properties to gain an advantage in battle.
  • Theme Music Power-Up: An in-universe example; after hitting a jackpot and receiving a bonus of unlimited cursed energy, the theme song for Private Pure Love Train, "Admiring You", begins loudly playing and can be heard by anyone near Hakari. The song length of 4 minutes and 11 seconds acts as the time limit for his bonus.
  • Train-Station Goodbye: The highest level "reach scenario" of his Domain Expansion, "Friday Night Final Train", plays out a romantic scene taking place on a train platform, with Hakari's "jackpot" determining whether the manga's female lead boards the last train home or stays the night with the protagonist.
  • Unseen No More: Hakari is mentioned early on in the series and shown once, but was The Ghost for a large portion of the series, not making his proper debut until Chapter 153.
  • Warrior Therapist: He acts as one for Charles as while he likes fighting for fighting's sake and gambling on danger for the fun of it as made very apparent by his Cursed Technique, he shows his best traits in post-fight catharsis, telling Charles he shouldn't get caught up being scared of just publishing something to get over his slump as a Mangaka.
"But doesn't it feel nice to just go on a rampage sometimes? Not everything needs you to talk it through to find the right answer. "The way you kill is the way you live"... I guess it's like that?"
  • Wrong Context Magic: Hakari's Technique is just... straight-up weird. It more closely resembles a modern type of Domain with its sure hit rather than an old school onenote  with which it shares its non-lethality, the rules for it are so arcane (on top of being revealed to the opponent via direct transfer to the brain of its mechanics) that it works more like a weaponized Info Dump than giving the opponent much clarity. But is in effect more like the more ancient type of Domain where the Domain is used to set up rules or conditions that are more favorable to Hakari, as unlike most domain expansions Hakari is the only one affected by its end result: a jackpot of infinite Cursed Energy. This is part of why he's looked down upon by Jujutsu Higher-ups as they like Techniques that are simple to understand, on top of his Technique being Shoujo Manga-related hurting its validity in their eyes.

    Kirara Hoshi

Kirara Hoshi

Cursed Technique: Love Rendezvous

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kirara_hoshi_6.png

A suspended third-year at Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School. Kirara is on the run with Hakari, their closest ally, where they help out with his fight club.

Their technique, Love Rendezvous, marks any target with Cursed Energy with one of the 5 stars of the Southern Cross, and requires those marked to move in the direction of the mark of the next-furthest star from Earth after the one they have been marked with or be stuck in a similar effect of perpetually moving in place to that of Gojo's Limitless. In essence, one must follow the stars in sequencenote  or be repelled. Objects marked with the same star are drawn together, and Kirara can, if necessary, remove the marks they have to allow them to mark more objects with the same star to turn those objects into projectiles.

  • Ambiguous Gender Identity: Kirara presents as a woman, but Panda states resolutely that they are a man. It is unclear what identity they prefer.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: As part of Kirara's status as Hakari's Implied Love Interest, when he brings up his mounting excitement reminding him of the days of his ex-girlfriend and maxed out credit cards, Kirara snaps at him not to mention his ex.
  • Confusion Fu: The crux of Kirara's Technique that makes it hard to figure out how to navigate is that its order is based on the constellation's depth, as the distance between Earth and each star obviously isn't as two-dimensional as it appear to the naked eye.
  • Cosmic Motifs: Hoshi means 'star', and their Cursed Technique is directly tied to the Southern Cross constellation and several of its astronomical properties.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Kirara's pupils are shaped like stars.
  • Gravity Master: Objects marked with the same star are pulled into one another. This is demonstrated by Panda, who throws a car coming at him away only to have it immediately rebound into his face.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Their Cursed Technique cannot be explained with anything less than a small fillibuster, yet is remarkably simple and harmless-sounding once its "rules" are clear. In effect however, it makes Kirara a massive pain in the ass to fight against on top of being a physical powerhouse.
  • Implied Love Interest: Kirara displays unconditional devotion to Hakari and the way the two touch each other when alone is far more intimate than one would expect from just two close friends. There's also Kirara using their Cursed Technique, Love Rendezvous, to protect Hakari from intruders and Kirara's jealousy when Hakari offhandedly mentions his ex-girlfriend.
  • Logical Weakness: Keeping track of all their "marks" at once is not easy and they aren't immune to their own Technique for obvious reasons. After effectively playing Ping-Pong with Megumi, his Shikigami, and Panda, Kirara eventually slips up when Megumi never unsummoned his Divine Dog and made it take the long way around the rooftop to pull it and Kirara together, giving Megumi the chance to put them in a hold.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Kirara doesn't seem to care whether Hakari follows laws or not, and chooses to follow him unconditionally.
  • The Nicknamer: They seem to like giving people nicknames, referring to Hakari as "Kin" and Yuji as "Yu".
  • Savage Piercings: In addition to pierced ears, Kirara has a trifecta of facial piercings resembling the Summer Triangle formed by the corners of their mouth and their chin.
  • Stellar Name: Kirara Hoshi more or less means 'twinkling/glittering star.'
  • Wrestler in All of Us: They completely destroy the hood of a car with a flying dropkick trying to hit Panda and Megumi.
  • Wrong Context Magic: Like Hakari, they have a very unorthodox and obtuse Technique that makes them very unpopular with the traditionalist Jujutsu higher-ups.

Yu Haibara

Voiced by: Gakuto Kajiwara (Japanese), Ryan Colt Levy (English)

Age: 17

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yu_haibara.png

Nanami's best friend at Jujutsu High, an underclassman of Gojo, Geto and Shoko.

  • Big Brother Instinct: Supplementary material reveals he has a little sister who can see curses but whom he strictly forbade from attending Jujutsu High.
  • Dead Person Conversation: He appears twice following his death but both times it's ambiguous if his ghost is really there or if it's a hallucination.
    • In Chapter 120, Haibara's ghost seemingly appears to Nanami moments before the latter is about to die. When Nanami asks him why he returned to being a jujutsu sorcerer, Haibara silently points at Yuji.
    • In Chapter 236, he's one of the people Gojo meets in his Afterlife Antechamber, along with Geto, Nanami and Principal Yaga.
  • Has a Type: When Yuki Tsukumo asks Geto what type of girls he's into, Haibara answers the question instead, saying he likes girls with healthy appetites.
  • Keet: He has the perpetual energy and enthusiasm of an excited puppy making him a perfect comedic foil for the colder and more aloof Nanami.
  • Killed Offscreen: Haibara is killed offscreen on a mission against a Grade 1 Curse that was incorrectly categorized as a Grade 2.
  • Posthumous Character: He's been dead a decade before the events of the series.
  • Tragic Bromance: He's Nanami's best friend at Jujutsu High and ends up killed on a mission that was mistakenly given a lower ranking than what it actually was. It's implied his death is one of the reasons Nanami took a break from being a jujutsu sorcerer and why Nanami so quickly gets attached to Yuji. When Nanami is moments from death, either Haibara's spirit visits him or Nanami hallucinates it.

Cursed Technique: Cursed Corpse

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/masamichi_yaga.png

The principal of the Tokyo branch of Jujutsu High and a former teacher to Gojo and his peers.

His apparent and unnamed Cursed Technique allows him to imbue dolls with cursed energy, giving them life and allows him to control them. He further revolutionized this by being able to create "new life" like Panda, a seemingly naturally born Cursed Corpse able to grow and age like a human being.

  • A Death in the Limelight: Chapter 147 focuses entirely around him, and ends in his death at Gakuganji's hands and reveals he has been in consideration for Special-Grade because he could potentially create an army if he could produce it, which he can, but deliberately hid for the very reason of avoiding scrutiny.
  • Baritone of Strength: An extremely proficient Jujutsu master with a notably deep, imposing voice.
  • Cool Shades: His primary accessory, which he is never seen without.
  • Da Chief: To Gojo's Cowboy Cop. As the headmaster of Jujutsu High he's in charge of directing the response to cursed spirit and curse user attacks as well as educational duties. Most of his appearances involve him having to deal with Gojo's (and sometimes Yuji's) escapades.
  • Defiant to the End: Subverted. While he continually refuses to explain how his Cursed Corpses are made to the higher-ups, even after being told that could save his life from execution, he chooses to tell Gakuganji in his final moments so as to spite him.
  • Gentle Giant: He's huge and looks menacing as hell, but also a very Reasonable Authority Figure who even Gojo tends to rely on.
  • Heroic Build: A single Shirtless Scene of him training with Panda reveals that he has a very muscular, imposing physique.
  • Heroic BSoD: Geto's defection and massacre of his home village, as well as his own parents, takes a noticeable toll on him while he's breaking the news to Satoru in the Hidden Inventory arc.
  • Hidden Elf Village: He's made one of these in a secluded forest where his more sapient Cursed Corpse "children" sans Panda can live out their days in peace.
  • Marionette Master: His Jujutsu technique is the creation of "cursed corpses", which are inanimate objects made to act through cursed energy. More literally, he personally sews the stuffed animals and puppets that he animates. He is in fact the foremost expert on it.
  • My Greatest Failure: Appears to show a great deal of regret over what happened with Geto.
  • Parental Substitute: Is this to Panda, whom he created. He's seen playing with, training, and generally raising a baby Panda in flashbacks, and is noted to give him a measure of special treatment. He even refers to the other two cores he put inside Panda as Panda’s siblings.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Is introduced to the audience in Cool Shades and a tracksuit while sewing dolls with a pin and needle.
Itadori, internally: The old man is making cute things!!
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Yaga accepts Itadori into the school only after he's convinced that Itadori knows exactly what he's getting into, and backs Gojo in opposing the higher-ups who want Itadori dead.
  • The Scapegoat: Following the Shibuya Incident, Yaga is blamed for inciting both Geto and Gojo into causing the event and is sentenced to death, despite having nothing to do with it. The elders are simply looking for someone they can place the blame on and make an example of, with Yaga only being guilty by association. As a bonus, it provides them with an excuse to force him to share the secret of his Cursed Corpse technique.

Cursed Technique: Ratio

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kento_nanami.png
Click here to see him in the Hidden Inventory arc

A Grade 1 sorcerer and former salaryman with a hardworking personality. Not actually a teacher.

His Cursed Technique, Ratio, allows him to divide a target into lines, and at the 7:3 point, a weak spot is created which he can then strike.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Itadori calls him "Nanamin", and he doesn't seem to mind it. At least not enough to actually punch him anyway.
  • Arc Hero: Of the VS Mahito Arc, being Itadori's only real ally for its entire duration. Afterwards, it's a while until he makes a significant appearance again.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: Nanami's technique invokes this. When activated, he sees a line segment on his target and then spots a weakpoint where the line splits in a 7:3 ratio. By striking this weakpoint, he can do additional damage.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: With Itadori. Given his no-nonsense personality, Nanami has no problem teaming up with other sorcerers to take down curses, especially if it's the safer option and guarantees that he'll get home from work on time.
  • Baritone of Strength: As is part and parcel for David Vincent and Kenjiro Tsuda voicing an extremely proficient fighter, Nanami has a deep, husky voice.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: He wears an impeccable suit and is a Grade 1 sorcerer.
  • Because I'm Good At It: Claims that this is the reason why he chose to return to being a sorcerer, rather than continue to work as a salaryman.
"If both are equally shit, I'll take the one I'm more suited to."
  • Body Horror: After encountering Jogo, he's left in a horrific state with half of his flesh burnt off, leaving him literally Two-Faced.
  • Brutal Honesty: He is incredibly straightforward, rarely softening things up for a person's benefit. Because of this, Yuji finds it hard to get along with him at first, but he still respects him immensely.
  • But Not Too Foreign: His character notes state that he's a quarter-Danish.
  • The Comically Serious: He often says humorous things in his default deadpan tone. Several gag moments pair him with Gojo to maximize this effect.
  • Cool Shades: Wears a pair at nearly all times.
  • Creepy Good: His appearance, personality, and mannerisms draw heavily from Yoshikage Kira, the salaryman serial killer from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and the anime gives him Kenjiro Tsuda's signature murderous drawl. Despite this, there's never any doubt that he's one of the good guys.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Shigemo was fucked the second Nanami walked through the door.
  • The Eeyore: Nanami's reasons for coming back to Jujutsu High are rather... as Yuji puts it, depressing. To him, Jujutsu sorcery and work both suck and he chose the option that sucked less. He's not a particularly enthusiastic person aside from that, either.
  • Eye Scream: Loses an eye fighting Dagon.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Upon encountering Mahito again while half-dead in Shibuya, he resigns himself to his fate and imparts his last words to Yuji before being blowed to smithereens.
Itadori-kun, I leave the rest to you.
  • Genius Bruiser: Many of his monologues have him analyzing the opponent's moves and Cursed Technique to find their weak point. This, combined with his Cursed Technique and raw strength, makes him one of the deadliest jujutsu sorcerers.
  • Good Feels Good: The true reason why Nanami chose to become a jujutsu sorcerer again after working unfulfilling years as a salaryman helping the rich get richer — he received gratitude from a bakery worker after he had destroyed a curse who was unknowingly causing her shoulder pain.
  • Good is Not Nice: He's one of the good guys, but he comes as blunt and cold-hearted due to his rational methodology and professional standards.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Right before he's killed by Mahito, Nanami smiles at Yuji and tells him to take it from here. Poignantly, this is the only time he ever smiles at Yuji.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Mahito uses his Idle Transfiguration to reduce everything from the waist up into an explosion of gore, leaving only Nanami’s hips and legs intact.
  • Heroic Fatigue: Suffered from this as a student as the strain of being a sorcerer became more apparent. Losing Haibara to a miscategorized Cursed Spirit hit him particularly hard, to the point he wonders aloud why they couldn't just leave everything up to Gojo. It's likely this contributed to his initial decision to retire from being a sorcerer.
  • Hold the Line: Uniquely, Nanami has a contract ability, known as "Overtime", that rewards him for doing this. A cap is placed on his power, weakening him — however, if a fight is drawn out past a certain time while he has this cap on him, it is raised beyond his normal level, increasing his cursed energy substantially.
  • Hunk: Nanami is a big guy with a very chiseled physique and a mighty chin. The anime makes sure to highlight just how large and muscular he is in the second season.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: He's one of the more cynical characters of the series, stemmed from a viewpoint that his contributions to the world don't matter so long as it keeps the world turning. Despite of this, he has a good heart and puts other people's safety over his.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While he comes off as very cold, Nanami is a genuinely good person at heart.
  • Killed Off for Real: Mahito kills him in Shibuya.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: Mahito kills him by causing his upper body to gruesomely explode.
  • Made of Iron: Haruta trying to kick Nanami in the midsection conjures an image of a massive boulder in his mind. He keeps slaughtering transfigured humans even after Dagon takes one of his eyes and Jogo fries him to a crisp.
  • Magic Knight: Nanami wields a blunt sword with great grace in combination with his cursed technique Ratio to target enemies' weak points.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: Gojo introduces him to Itadori as a mentor to learn the ins and outs of actual sorcerer work. Subverted during his first encounter with Mahito, as Itadori manages to break Mahito's domain with Sukuna's help, but double subverted during their second encounter in Shibuya.
  • Obi-Wan Moment: Feeling Mahito’s touch upon him and knowing he’s about to die, Nanami turns to Yuji and uses his final words to assure him that Yuji can take care of things from here. Mahito then murders him.
  • Only in It for the Money: After he left Jujutsu High, Nanami only thought about money for four years, working a meaningless office job with the goal of making enough to retire by 40 and move to a cheap country to live at for the rest of his life. The gratitude of a bakery worker, who he saved from a curse that she perceived as shoulder pain, motivated Nanami to become a jujutsu sorcerer again.
  • Papa Wolf: Of the Jujutsu High sorcerors, he's the one that takes the safety and training of the students most seriously, and tells Itadori that he will always prioritize the students' lives over his own.
Nanami: It's not a matter of underestimating you or not. I am an adult, and you are a child. I have a duty to prioritize your life over my own. You've faced several life or death situations, but that does not make you an adult.
  • Punch-Clock Hero: Taken literally, and weaponized: His power goes up if he's forced to work for more than 8 hours. Much of his backstory was spent defying this trope and realizing that despite his cynical view of the world, he really did find something fulfilling in fighting curses.
  • Retirony: Though Nanami never mentions when he plans to retire, just before his death in Shibuya after he’s been burnt to a crisp by Jogo, he thinks about how he’s always worked towards getting enough money to retire on a beach on Malaysianote and just sit back and read all the books he’s collected but never had time to read. This is greatly expanded in the anime where scenes of Nanami imagining himself basking in the sun and playing in the ocean are intercut with the reality of him fighting for his life against a horde of transfigured humans. He only fully snaps back to reality after they’re all dead and Mahito places his hand on him.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Never seen without a suit, even when he's running around and battling curses.
  • Significant Birth Date: His birthday is July 3rd (7/3), referencing his Ratio technique.
  • The Stoic: Often has a cold, professional, and detached demeanor, further emphasized by the glasses that completely obscure his eyes.
  • Take Up My Sword: Imbued his Cursed Tool with Ratio so that the Technique could still be used in service of fighting Curses in the event of his death.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Lets out a flat "crap" upon being trapped in Mahito's Domain, having quietly resigned himself to his fate.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: You can count on one hand the number of sorcerers in the manga who actually took the job of combatting curses and protecting people seriously rather than as a vehicle for politics, advancing their personal ambitions, or as a glorified hobby to inflate their egos. Nanami was one such sorcerer.
  • Tragic Bromance: He was best friends with Yu Haibara and the two were in the same year at Jujutsu High in Tokyo. Tragically, Haibara dies during their second year when he and Nanami are sent on a mission that was mistakenly given a lower grade than it deserved. It’s implied his death contributed to Nanami trying to quit being a jujutsu sorcerer since one of the reasons he lists for hating the job is that he hates risking his life and his friends lives. It’s also implied Nanami takes such a quick shine to Yuji because Yuji and Haibara are so alike in personality. Finally, when Nanami is about to die himself, he asks Haibara why he ever bothered to return to being a sorcerer only for Haibara’s ghost to seemingly appear before him and give him a silent answer by pointing at Yuji, which gives Nanami enough resolves to face death with dignity.
  • Tranquil Fury: His voice never rises above a neutral level during his fight with Haruta, just calmly and repeatedly interrogating him as to his allies' numbers and locations, but makes his displeasure of the latter's massacre of the assistant supervisors and torture of Akari known by the absolutely brutal beatdown he delivers, slamming him into the wall repeatedly and finally punching him through multiple walls. Subverted in the anime, where David Vincent and Kenjiro Tsuda makes Nanami's interrogative voice one of barely-contained rage.
  • Virtuous Character Copy: Between his formal business attire, history as a salaryman, and desire for a peaceful life, Nanami is an obvious take-off of Yoshikage Kira from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable. However, for all his bluster of wanting a normal life, Kira was a self-interested serial killer who murdered to satisfy his own perversions and was introduced to the series by killing a middle school student who accidentally found proof of his crimes. Underneath his cool superpowers and jaded irritation, Nanami is a genuinely normal guy who wants a pleasant retirement and fights out of a sense of duty, being especially insistent on protecting the students placed under his care.
  • Younger Than They Look: Despite looking like he's in his late 30s and having a very mature outlook on life, he's actually just 27, having been Gojo's underclassman in school.

Kiyotaka Ijichi

Age: 27

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kiyotaka_ijichi.png

An auxiliary manager at Jujutsu High.

Auxiliary managers are forbidden to fight and simply handle basic things like curtains, supporting with shikigami, and instructing students on missions.

  • Action Survivor: Despite not having any powers, he still helps his allies, and still lives.
  • Butt-Monkey: The poor guy truly can't catch a break. Being around Gojo seems to stress him out severely, not helped by Gojo's occasional teasing and harassment.
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: As is fit for his tight-knit, neat looks and meek attitude, he never uses casual language in Japanese.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: During the Shibuya Incident, Haruta impales him with his sword multiple times. Miraculously, he's survived, Nanami finding him in time to get him healed.
  • Mr. Exposition: Ijichi is often used to explain complicated concepts in the series, appearing in panels that are separate from the current action to exposit on how cursed energy is being applied. This is taken further in the anime where he is often used to replace the manga's anonymous narrator.
  • Nice Guy: He's a bit of a pushover, but he's a nice, amiable person to be around.
  • Non-Action Guy: Invoked. As an auxiliary manager, he can't engage in battle, so he can only support from the sidelines while the jujutsu sorcerers handle the task at hand. It is implied that he has skills beyond creating Curtains, but he is limited by his position.
  • Not Quite Dead: Impaled several times by Haruta yet he manages to survive thanks to Nanami finding him and getting him to a healer on time. Many other auxiliary managers Haruta finds aren't as lucky.
  • Vocal Dissonance: In the English dub, Ijichi boasts an impressively deep voice, contrasting with his modest appearance. In Japanese, he speaks with a tone of voice you'd usually expect from an elder, even though he's only 26.
  • Younger Than They Look: He looks like to be in his late 30s to early 40s, but in reality he's 26 — a full two years younger than Gojo.

An auxiliary manager at Jujutsu High and the older sister of Arata Nitta from the Kyoto School.

  • Nice Girl: Shown to be a kind, caring person who wants to help the Jujutsu High students however she can.
  • Pain to the Ass: Haruta literally stabs her in the ass while she's semi-conscious in the Shibuya Incident Arc.

Jujutsu: Reverse Cursed Technique Mastery

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shoko_ieiri.png
Click here to see her in the Hidden Inventory arc

A doctor at Jujutsu High, a close friend and former classmate of Gojo.

She is a master of the Reverse Cursed Technique, a technique that reverses the negative energy of cursed energy and turns it positive. This positive energy then lets one heal themselves or others. Healing others with positive energy is something only a few sorcerers are capable of, and why Shoko is valuable.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Shoko has black hair and eyes in the manga, both of which are changed to dark brown in the anime.
  • Boring, but Practical: Compared to Gojo and Geto her ability is much less showy in presentation but in such a dangerous profession with an incredibly high mortality rate, the ability to use Reverse Cursed Technique (already a rarity among sorcerers) to heal others still makes her indispensable.
  • Brainy Brunette: Dark brown hair, and is a doctor who obtained her doctor's license in two years, properly following the national exam but making up her eligibility, and master of the rare Reverse Cursed Technique.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: Has some deep dark circles under her eyes and more than alright with dissecting Yuji's corpse.
  • Healing Hands: A given as the doctor of Jujutsu High. She's a master of the Reverse Cursed Technique, reversing negative cursed energy into positive cursed energy to heal others.
  • Lady Drunk: Her hobby is listed as "drinking alcohol". According to the fanbook, Naobito is not the heaviest drinker in the series, she is. After her and Itadori's battle against Eso & Kechizu, Nobara wonders if Shoko is still awake and sober enough to patch them up.
  • Lazy Bum: During her days as a student, she would often shirk her way out of going on missions, leaving Gojo and Geto to do all the heavy lifting. It's implied she got away with it because of the rarity of her talent for Reverse Cursed Technique.
  • The Medic: Responsible for tending to injuries at the college. She is the primary user of Reverse Technique, which allows her to heal others using positive cursed energy.
  • Mellow Fellow: Appears laid-back and amicable all-around, and is shown smoking often. In her youth, she appears a degree more spirited, but this still applies. Even when Geto meets up with her after his defection, her reaction is to simply laugh at him in bewilderment and call Gojo.
  • Only Sane Man: Of the informal trio she formed with Geto and Gojo, she's the only one who came out of their school days genuinely content and well-adjusted instead of either going mad with power or secretly stewing in grief.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Succinctly recognizes Geto's insane genocidal scheme as him throwing a tantrum over an almost childish assumption that no one could understand him. While Geto suffers the insult with no retaliation, he also ignores the criticism, which goes poorly for him in the long run.
  • Smoking Is Cool: An unashamed smoker in her student days, but Utahime eventually helped her quit. However, she relapses during the Shibuya Arc. Afterward, having presumably learned about Gojo's sealing and Yaga's execution order, Shoko falls back completely into smoking through a blink-and-miss-it panel with an overflowing ashtray.
  • Uniqueness Decay: After the Shibuya arc, more cast members with Reverse Cursed Technique begin to appear, and existing ones either reveal that they were capable of it or start learning that they can perform it as well.

Cursed Technique: Auspicious Beast Summon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/takuma_ino_anime.png

A young Grade-2 sorcerer affiliated with Jujutsu High who is often seen working with Nanami.

His Cursed Technique, Auspicious Beast Summon, allows him to become a spiritual medium that can channel the abilities of four powerful Shikigami.

  • Cool Mask: The hat he appears to wear is actually a black mask that he can pull over his face. Concealing his face is a crucial aspect of his power, being the action that allows him to actually summon the beasts.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: While he himself lampshaded that his opponent was ridiculously strong, Ino barely lasted ten seconds against Toji before he was thrown off the skyscraper they were on, half-dead.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He first appears during Volume 0 as an unnamed background sorcerer who shows up to provide assistance when Geto makes his declaration at the school, but isn't properly introduced until Chapter 26 of the main series.
  • Everyone's Baby Brother: His character page notes that his youthful disposition often makes older sorcerers help him out as if he were a younger sibling.
  • The Four Gods: The four Shikigami that he channels are all based on the traditional four gods.
  • Homing Projectile: Channeling the power of Kaichi allows him to summon a large spiral that chases after his enemies.
  • Making a Splash: Channeling Reiki surrounds his hands and feet in a water-like substance, but the exact application of this ability isn't explained.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: During the climactic battle against Sukuna in Shinjuku, Ino is more than aware of the fact that he's by far the weakest of the sorcerers going up against the King of Curses. He's not a bad sorcerer by any means, but he perfectly understands that Sukuna could effortlessly kill him with only a snap of his fingers. He doesn't let that deter him and still legitimately helps out by distracting Sukuna at the right moments.
  • Rank Up: He wishes to be promoted to the rank of Grade-1 sorcerer, but only by Nanami's recommendation and no one else's. Nanami often uses this to motivate Ino into doing jobs he is uninterested in.
  • Summon Magic: His Cursed Technique summons one of four beasts that he can channel to use their abilities.
  • Tragic Keepsake: In the battle against Sukuna, Ino is shown wielding his deceased mentor Nanami's blunted sword. Ino was initially uncomfortable with using the weapon of someone he deeply respected, but after asking Nanami's school friends for permission to use it they encouraged Ino by telling him that Nanami trusted him more than anyone else.
  • Unfazed Everyman: Out of all the sorcerers fighting Sukuna at Shinjuku, Ino is by far the most ordinary of the bunch. He's not a prodigy like Yuta or a Heavenly Restriction user like Maki or a freak science experiment like Yuji; he's just an everyday, average sorcerer, yet he still has the guts to put his life on the line in a seemingly hopeless battle. He legitimately helps out too by distracting Sukuna at several key moments, such as when Yuji is tearing into him with an onslaught of consecutive Black Flashes. Not bad for someone who's still at Grade 2.
  • The Unreveal: We don't get to see what the abilities of Kirin and Ryu can do. Ino is about to use the power of Ryu before Toji Fushiguro repeatedly punches him in the face.
  • What Would X Do?: Ino admits he doesn't think of himself as smart, so whenever he's in a tough situation, he asks himself what Nanami would do. It's also the reason Ino doesn't want to become a Grade-1 sorcerer unless Nanami is the one who recommends him.
  • Willing Channeler: He conceals his face in order to act as a medium to channel the abilities of various Shikigami.

    Atsuya Kusakabe

Atsuya Kusakabe

Jujutsu: New Shadow Style

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/atsuya_kusakabe_anime.png

A Grade-1 sorcerer who works as a second-year instructor at Jujutsu High.

He is a talented practitioner of the New Shadow Style, which enhances swordsmanship using the Simple Domain technique.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: The movie has his hair color brown while the manga portrays him with black hair color.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Kusakabe is noted as having "strong analytical and decisions-making skills" by fellow Sorcerer Kento Nanami and has great knowledge of Jujutsu sorcery in spite of his rather simple fighting style. During the Shinjuku Showdown arc, he's able to carefully dissect and explain the complexities behind Gojo and Sukuna's strategies or use of their Domains or Cursed Techniques to his fellow spectators), although he's still surprised or baffled by the two Sorcerer's repeated skirting or outright violation of the rules of Jujutsu.
  • Badass Normal: While not an entirely normal person, unlike most impressive Sorcerers he lacks an Innate Technique. Despite this disadvantage, he managed to make it to Grade 1, through mastery of the basics and training in the New Shadow Style. It's remarked that he's the most impressive Sorcerer with no Innate Technique. Still, he's a good judge of his own power and knows he can't defeat Special Grade Curses due to his lack of an Innate Technique.
  • Big Good: Unexpectedly, despite his character flaws, when Gojo, Master Tengen, Principal Yaga and Nanami are all out of commission, Kusakabe is the one the remaining heroes rally behind and who tries to coordinate their efforts against Kenjaku and Sukuna.
  • Cowardly Lion: By his own admission, he'd rather not die and tends to avoid confrontation to save his own skin. However, he's unable to bring himself to run away when the chips are down. During the Shinjuku Showdown part 2, he briefly contemplated on running away once he was the last sorcerer still able to fight. However, he had a vision of Principle Yaga being saddened by that. It was enough to spur him to fight against Sukuna. Gojo, Mei Mei and Nanami all complimented him on being a kind man deep down.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He tends to come across as a lazy coward who would rather avoid conflict, but when against a wall and forced to fight, he shows himself to be a highly skilled and formidable warrior, even earning some praise from Kenjaku. In fact, Kusakabe is outright indicated to be the strongest Grade-1 sorcerer.note
  • Iaijutsu Practitioner: Standard for the New Shadow Style, with Cursed Energy used to improve his draw speed and attack power.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Kusakabe often grumbles and complains about his job, possesses a cowardly streak in trying to avoid threats out of his weight class, and is willing to support ruthlessly pragmatic actions like executing Yuji due to the threat he poses as Sukuna's vessel, but when the chips are down, Kusakabe will very reluctantly do the right thing. Gojo, Nanami and Mei Mei all describe him as kind-hearted and Kusakabe proves their assessment right upon becoming the de facto Big Good of the Jujutsu High forces and their allies. He even goes so far as to risk his life to fight Sukuna directly, both out of obligation to the late Principal Yaga and because it isn't right for him to run when the students of Jujutsu High all fought despite how hopeless it seemed.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • His great reluctance to get into a fight with the Special-Grade Disaster Curses is rather selfish considering it's his entire job as a Sorcerer. But can you really blame him for not wanting to get anywhere near Mahito, Jogo, or Dagon?
    • He tells Panda that he'll flat-out support the higher-ups in their plan to execute Yuji because of the threat he poses as Sukuna's vessel. However cold-blooded and unfair it is, Kusakabe does have a point in how much danger it brings to innocent people if Yuji lives. Especially as he voices this immediately after Sukuna temporarily gains control of Yuji's body and uses it to effortlessly murder thousands of people in Shibuya.
  • Kick the Dog: He gives his full support to the higher-ups revoking the suspension of Yuji's death sentence after nearly dying to Sukuna. Though admittedly after witnessing Sukuna's slaughter of thousands of innocent people in Shibuya, Kusakabe's stance is rather understandable.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: His cowardly attempt to avoid having to fight any Special Grade Curses during the Shibuya Incident leads to him coming face-to-face with Sukuna, the most dangerous Curse in existence.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Spent most of the Shibuya Incident running around with Panda looking for survivors... because he was desperately trying to avoid having to participate in the fighting. When he is forced to fight however, it becomes clear he wasn't made a Grade-1 Sorcerer on a fluke.
  • Negated Moment of Awesome: He is treated like a joke for the early parts of the Shibuya arc, but finally gets a badass moment to show that he's a Grade-1 sorcerer for a reason, only to get his moment cut short by the arrival of Sukuna.
  • Mr. Exposition: Kusakabe spends the first half of the Shinjuku Showdown arc commenting on Gojo and Sukuna's fight in the empty Shibuya, allowing the other characters in the room (or the audience) a chance at understanding the complexities behind their techniques and strategies. After a while he admits he's getting tired of explaining how many impossible stunts they are pulling.
  • Oh, Crap!: Just as Kusakabe tries to run from Shibuya as Jogo and Sukuna start fighting each other, Sukuna Flash Steps next to him and forbids everyone present from moving a muscle under penalty of death. The only thing Kusakabe can do at this point is sweat buckets until he's given permission to move.
  • Pet the Dog: While he certainly comes off as a bit of a Dirty Coward in Shibuya, Kusakabe still puts his life on the line by joining in on the fight against Sukuna despite having almost zero chance of making it out alive.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
    • Promptly tries to bail out of Shibuya when Jogo and Sukuna start fighting each other, even warning the curse users in his way that they would be wise to do the same.
    • Shockingly averted in the fight against Sukuna. Despite standing virtually zero chance against him, Kusakabe still holds his ground and puts his life on the line to help bring him down.
  • Simple, yet Awesome: Kusakabe made it all the way to Grade-1 (despite lacking an Innate technique) simply by being very good with Simple Domains. Thanks to still being Domains that empower Kusakabe while weakening enemy attacks, he's been able to use Simple Domains and his New Shadow Style swordsmanship to deflect attacks from foes as powerful as Kenjaku or Sukuna. He can even mimic a proper Domain Expansion by widening the range of his Simple Domain, allowing him to go on the offensive on an opponent with it. Because of this, fellow Grade-1 and above Sorcerers view Kusakabe in a high light.
  • Stand Your Ground: In the climactic battle at Shinjuku, Kusakabe comes face to face with Sukuna himself with no available backup in the area. He's not immediately in front of Sukuna and might be able to make it out unscathed if he were to hide, but instead he chooses to stand his ground against the King of Curses in one hopeless last battle. He himself is surprised by his determination, inwardly noting that he feels indebted to Principal Yaga and realizes that he's the only thing standing between Sukuna and his students like Miwa. He manages to do a surprising amount of damage but, as expected, he's effortlessly taken out the moment Sukuna tries. At just the last moment though, Kusakabe is saved by Miguel and Larue, allowing Ui Ui to bring his unconscious body to Shoko for treatment.
  • Sweet Tooth: He is often seen with a lollipop in his mouth.
  • Undying Loyalty: Is extremely loyal to Yaga as a result of him creating a Cursed Corpse with the memories of Kusakabe's deceased nephew that was able to act as a Replacement Goldfish for his grief-stricken sister. This loyalty extends so much that he rebels against his superiors to free a captured Panda.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Kusakabe's katana shatters right after he lands a series of slashes on Sukuna. To his credit, he's unfazed by this, immediately resorting to fisticuffs and repairing his weapon for a (sadly futile) stab at Sukuna's heart right afterwards.

    Master Tengen (Spoilers)

Master Tengen

Cursed Technique: Immortality

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tengen___m_cap144.jpg

An ancient sorcerer who maintains a powerful barrier that protects the Jujutsu schools in both Tokyo and Kyoto.

  • Age Without Youth: Her immortality does not stop physical aging. Geto says she resembles something closer to an old tree rather than a human, and this remark turns out to be on the money; Tengen's true body is a heavily scarred four-eyed husk vaguely resembling a human being lying in fetal position inside a cavity of the central tree in the Tomb of the Star.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Her skin is light blue, possibly as a side-effect of becoming a curse-like being.
  • Ambiguously Evil: While seemingly altruistic and a source of useful information, characters like Megumi and Yuki don't fully trust Tengen and never discount the possibility that she is either working directly with Kenjaku and misleading them or is otherwise compromised in some way.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Tengen says that gender no longer applies to her due to her situation, though others still refer to him as male. The Star Plasma Vessels chosen to be his new bodies all seem to be female, and Tengen says that it's more suitable to refer to him as a granny rather than an old man, making the gender of Tengen's original form more ambiguous. Volume extras showing how she used to look would considerably dial back the ambiguity.
  • Ambiguously Human: Tengen is implied to no longer be a normal human due to the circumstances of his technique, and this is further reinforced upon his proper introduction, having a decidedly inhuman appearance, making it unclear how human he was to begin with. He later states that his current appearance is a result of ageing and that humans would look like that after 500 years. In any case, he is closer to a Cursed Spirit then a human which makes him vulnerable to cursed sprit manipulation.
  • Ascended to a Higher Plane of Existence: If Tengen is unable to find a new body to merge with, there is high risk that she will 'ascend' to a higher state and no longer be human, unable to maintain her function and even possibly becoming a threat to humanity. It's later revealed that due to Toji's killing of the Star Plasma Vessel, this has already happened — however thanks to her barrier techniques, Tengen can maintain her sense of self in this evolved state.
  • Barrier Maiden: Her purpose is to protect the Jujutsu schools with a very powerful barrier. The mere presence of such a strong barrier is enough to boost any other barrier or Curtain that other sorcerers create.
    • Tengen's Barriers serve as a base or Standard/Reference point for other sorcerers to use in construction their own barriers, they do this in addition to limiting the birth of curses. If these Barriers ever collapse, then Barrier technique know how would be sent backwards by a 1000 years and thousands of people would die due to the loss of knowledge and the amount of curses that would be born.
  • Barrier Warrior: They are the number one user of Barrier techniques in the entire world, and every other sorcerer uses their barriers as a base or reference point on how to construct theirs. Their barrier is also responsible for containing the vast majority of Cursed Energy in Japan and contributing to the countries high rate of curses and sorcerers.
    • Tengen's Sunyata barrier has a circular definition, effectively making it infinite in size from the perspective of someone on the inside.
    • Her barriers can be used to extract information and can be programmed to destroy other barriers, even ones as powerful as a domain expansion.
    • Her Barrier can also be turned into any environment he or another skilled wishes it to be, be it a Movie Theater, Bar, or a series of platforms with random trees occuring in a repeated pattern till infinity.
    • In terms of strength, Tengen's barrier is powerful enough to withstand and contain the power of a world destroying black hole.
  • Big Good: The one responsible for protecting and hiding the Jujutsu schools, as well as the one who preached what would become the foundation for Jujutsu sorcerers. Master Tengen is extremely significant and seems to act with humanity's best interests in mind.
  • Body Surf: Every 500 years Tengen must merge with a compatible human known as a Star Plasma Vessel in order to prolong his immortality technique.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Thanks to Geto's stolen powers, Kenjaku defeats and imprisons Tengen almost instantly after dealing with Choso and Yuki.
  • Extra Eyes: He has four large Blank White Eyes on his head.
  • Good Old Ways: Provides offsite commentary during Yuji and Higuruma's battle, grousing over how supposedly "sure-hit" and "sure-kill" Domain Expansions (which can be, and often are, countered) have come into vogue over the less flashy "sure-effect" ones that guarantee conditions favorable to the caster as seen by the lawyer's Deadly Sentencing.
  • The Hermit: Deconstructed, as Tengen is accused of being this in a negative fashion by her main detractor and Old Friend Kenjaku; Compared to the latter, an Immortal Genius who perfected his art living through the tumultuous, random and dangerous world of Jujutsu, Tengen essentially just cooped up in her tree, relying on surfical knowledge of the world around her instead of actively leading it towards a predetermined course like Kenjaku, simply creating stability that could be readily overturned in the right circumstances into the End of the World as We Know It. When Kenjaku pulls up to take his prize, both of Tengen's plans to dispose of him fall apart; Tengen proves unable to dismantle a Domain with no physical barrier and didn't account for Kenjaku's Gravity Master power rendering him functionally immune to Yuki Tsukumo's Unrealistic Black Hole.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: While in the present she barely even has definable human features, extra pages for Volume 23 reveal her to have been a pale-haired Unkempt Beauty with Exhausted Eye Bags before her transformation.
  • MacGuffin Super-Person: Tengen's incredible power and important role make her a target of various factions and groups for a variety of nefarious reasons. The mission to escort her next vessel is what drives plot of the Hidden Inventory arc.
  • Merger of Souls: The souls of those who Tengen merges with apparently become one with her's, but Geto has his serious doubts about this, believing Tengen to completely override and eliminate the souls.
  • Minor Major Character: Her going out of control could mean the destruction of humanity, and her very existence is apparently what maintains Jujutsu High, and a large part of the world of sorcerers. Despite this, she isn't given even the slightest on-screen appearance and the arc based around her existence sidesteps the circumstances surrounding her in exchange for focusing on the conflict with Toji and Geto's downfall.
  • Mr. Exposition: She dumps quite a lot of information regarding the Culling Game on the heroes once she finally meets them, such as the rules of the Game, Kenjaku's motives for setting it up, the identities of notable participants, and ways they can possibly stop it.
  • Mundane Utility: Tengen's blank slate of a Barrier at the center of Jujutsu High can be rearranged to more or less whatever the old sage wishes, letting Choso and Yuki stay entertained while stuck deep underground as her bodyguards by producing anything from a high-end cabaret bar to a pool with a beach bed for them to relax and talk strategy within.
  • Non-Human Head: Her head has an inhuman appearance closer to that of a cursed spirit's rather than a human, a result of aging 511 years without being able to merge with a proper vessel. Choso humorously compares her appearance to that of a living thumb.
  • The Omnipresent: Due to her evolution, Tengen has merged with the world and is everywhere at the same time. She is able to maintain her sense of self thanks to her barrier techniques allowing her to construct a space where "she" can still exist without Death of Personality.
  • The Omniscient: She is described as the "All-Knowing Sorcerer". She is shown to indeed possess a degree of omniscience in her first appearance, immediately knowing the personal circumstances of each character present as she greets them within her barrier. This is due to her 'evolving' and merging with the world itself after being unable to merge with Riko Amanai instead. Her knowledge has its limits, as she is still incapable of seeing within the human heart and understanding a person's motivations despite instantly knowing so much other information about them.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Tengen's immortality technique has prolonged her life for well over 1000 years. If Kenjaku is to be believed, the two of them are Old Friends from back in the day that ultimately split over a difference in opinion.
  • Unseen No More: She is first mentioned early on in the series during the Kyoto Goodwill Event, but is unseen for a large portion of the story. She finally made his proper appearance in Chapter 144, a full 91 chapters after her first mention.
  • Unwanted False Faith: There is an old religious group in Japan known as the Time Vessel Association that are aware of Tengen's existence and worship her for the pro-minority views she held while she was a human. They wish for her to Ascend To A Higher Plane of Existence and attempt to stop the merger by any means, being the ones that hired Toji Fushiguro to kill the next vessel Riko Amanai.
