Fourth Wall Meme Slot contains examples of:

  • Berserk Button: Ask Shugo or Lina if they ever wore a dress they absolutely hated, and they'll roundhouse kick you all the way to the Tri-Cities faster than you can say "Pink Is for Sissies". (For the record, those two never wear pink, but their boyfriends do.)
  • I Know Karate: Lina is a trained martial artist, and she'll use her knowledge on anyone who dares ask her a touchy question.
  • Precision F-Strike: Sakura says "Oh shit" when she realizes how long and trailing her answer to one question had become. It's censored with one asterisk covering the vowel.
  • Real Women Never Wear Dresses: However, Yasu had to put up with it in her early years, while her dad was still alive. (Is it any wonder that she hides all those early Christmas photos from us in the Live-Action Adaptation of Pretty Cure Mirai ~ Spark!?) This trope is also why Shugo and Lina flip when asked if they ever wore a dress they absolutely hated. (For the record, Shugo's junior high uniform is the only time she had to put up with one, and Lina never wore so much as a skirt even when she was younger.)

Pretty Cure Fandom Fairy Tale Stories contains examples of:

  • Anachronism Stew: Shugo's Prince Charming costume in "Cinderella" is basically a modern-day royal blue business suit.
  • Demoted to Extra: Isn't it sad, Hoshi, Yukari, and Mia? All the screentime they get in their home fanfic is stolen by Emiru, who is more important in most Fanfic Features than she is in Blue Moon itself.
  • No Fourth Wall: Mitsuuru and Yumi acknowledge the events of PCHM episode 29 even before it was posted (keep in mind that episode one of PCFFTS was posted approximately three weeks before the scheduled posting of PCHM episode 29).
  • Not His Sled: Not only is this trope played straight when the transformation wears off at 9 PM instead of midnight, it's later subverted when Cinderella's stepmother tries to get in the way of Cinderella's and Prince Charming's relationship after the glass slipper fits Cinderella.

Pretty Cure Anime Theatre contains examples of:

  • A-Cup Angst:
    • Hanae mentions during preparations for The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya that her breasts are smaller than her character's. Luckily, Mitsuuru could rectify the situation with fake C-cups he had found in the tiring room. (BTW, Mitsuuru as Haruhi wears fake B-cups.)
    • Also, since Chiara's been confirmed to play Kurumu in the upcoming adaptation of Rosario+Vampire, this trope is expected in the prologue (along with her pitching a fit over Mitsuuru getting the part of Moka). The reason? Whereas Chiara is an A-cup, Kurumu is a G-cup.
    • Earlier, she uses an Ajax Auto-Gro Rack (and a little help from Lyra from the scrapped Pretty Cure Mirai ~ Spark! movie) to effectively portray Natsuru Seno in Kämpfer.
  • Ajax Products: The Ajax Auto-Gro Rack, which can change anyone's cup size and doesn't blow up when groped, and the Ajax Miniature Flamethrower.
  • Alternate Continuity: Judging from Yasu's outfit description at the start of the prologue of Princess Tutu, it's clear that the continuity the PCMS Cures come from in this feature is that of the two-part Live-Action Adaptation.
  • Anyone Can Die: Some of the cast members have died in a couple of productions, but that's mitigated by Jun's healing powers, which she uses to resurrect anyone that dies. Yasu invokes this trope when reciting the Rules of a Horror Movie Trilogy after Haruki is resurrected a second time:
    Yasu: Anyone, including the main character, can die. That means you too, Mitsuuru, so be careful out there when you return to the stage. I'm not bloody well kidding; this could be bloody Reservoir Dogs by the time this play is over.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: When Shugo as Kyon is naming aliens, she names those that have played aliens: Leonard Nimoy, Zachary Quinto, and Nikki Hillnote .
  • Atomic F-Bomb: When she learns why the Kampfer War spread to Earth to be fought by teenage girls, Chiara as Natsuru makes the most of this trope:
    Chiara: What. The. FUCK!?
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: Haruki looks cute in the dress he's wearing in Madoka Magica, so says the general consensus of Cures. Nanami especially says he looks adorable, and her eyes become pink hearts for a few seconds. His performance in the Cardcaptor Sakura cycle of plays, especially due to the cute dresses he winds up in a lot, is quite saccharine.
  • Badass Longcoat: Hitori wears a beige one as Inspector Gadget.
  • invoked Beam Me Up, Scotty!: Mitsuuru as Haruhi forgets to say that humans weren't interesting before asking for aliens, time travelers, and ESPers (but not sliders). Lampshaded by Shugo, who seems to be referring to the anime (note that Haruhi did say "sliders" in the original light novel).
  • The Bet: Why Hisato is wearing a tutu during the prologue of Princess Tutu.
    • To elaborate: According to Hisato, he and Tsutomu were playing a blackjack game where the loser would have to spend the next 24 hours wearing a tutu. As you can probably well imagine, Hisato lost.
  • Bifauxnen: As seen in Kämpfer, even Chiara looks convincing as a boy, and she also looks cute in a boys' uniform, as seen when the Cures perform Ouran High School Host Club.
    • Subverted by Ayameko in the prologue to Angel Beats!, though she does make herself look handsome in the process. When asked by her former teacher why she's wearing a male uniform, Ayameko says she wanted to be different from her friends, all of who had gone straight to the Oriyama Junior High campus from Oriyama High. Instead, she went home first and let Pittan know she was borrowing his uniform, putting it on before dashing to Oriyama Junior High. Chloe says, "I guess that explains why you took longer than us to show up." (Ayameko had said, "Sorry I'm late!" as she ran onto the campus in a hurry after Chiara wonders aloud where she is.)
      • For the record, the uniform Ayameko wears in the prologue to the play consists of a dark blue blazer over light blue dress shirt, red tie, and black dress pants.
    • Hitori says in her debut episode, "Judging by my overall personality, I'll most likely play a boy whenever I perform with you girls." Boy, was she right! Among the roles she's played are Taichi Yagami in Digimon: Hurricane Touchdown!!, the title character in Inspector Gadget, Kerberos Wansard in Is This A Zombie?, an Interpol officer in The Castle of Cagliostro, Kamija in Madoka Magica, the Red Ranger in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, an Ohtori-employed security guard in Ouran High School Host Club, Saizo in Rosario + Vampire and Rosario To Vampire Capu 2, Toad in Super Mario Bros. and Nina's father in Ultra Maniac.
  • Bottomless Magazines: Like Shugo, Hanae as Akane can fire hundreds of rounds without stopping to reload.
  • Bowdlerize: Unlike in the original High School Of The Dead anime, Saya in the production put up here doesn't get to use anything beyond "bastard", because Hanae Mitsukawa is in the role.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Same situation as in Kämpfer, but this time Sakura as Sakura actually says the phrase and uses the wording that led to the phrase in the first place:
    Sakura: I'm sorry. I don't remember any of it. Not even your friend's name.
    Shio: You... you don't remember?
    Sakura: For you, the day the blue girl defeated your red friend was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.
  • By the Power of Grayskull!: Shugo has Chiara, Mitsuuru, Asa, Yumi, and Haruki test out the henshin devices the characters from Madoka Magica left for them to use for their newest production. Chiara guides the other four in reciting the henshin phrase, and all five say it in unison. When the light concealing them fades, all five of them (even the boys) are wearing their respective characters' dresses.
  • Call-Back:
    • In The Castle of Cagliostro, Yasu portrays Goemon. Her costume? The exact same one she wore to the town festival in the Live-Action Adaptation of Pretty Cure Mirai ~ Spark!.
    • Before the Cures perform in Tales from Earthsea, Yasu has this line:
      Yasu: At Mirai Academy, both sexes wear shorts with their gym uniforms. Much to my relief, the girls' gym uniforms do not incorporate bloomers. Our shorts are just half a foot shorter than the boys' shorts, which actually barely reach their knees.
    • In Ouran High School Host Club, Shugo is quick to remind everyone that the story they're going to perform was adapted into a ballet she saw at Gekijou once and that performing in a play related to Ouran "brings back memories, in a way" as the location the play will be performed at is Gekijou.
    • In the prologue to Madoka Magica, the main cast (the five performers playing magical girls, all in costume, and Lina Eastwood, the voice of Kyubey) are taking photos with each other, the other performers and crew members, and (in Lina's case) the Kyubey animatronic before the play starts. At one point, Ayameko grabs Haruki and lifts him up balletically for a photo. Despite having no formal training, this reminds Haruki of a scene he appeared in for the musical Rosario + Vampire Second Year while a first year at Mirai Academy, so he plays along.
    • From Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie:
    Lina: Oh, the things that I have missed! The Black Plague! The Spanish Inquisition! THE PORN OF TRACI LORDS!!!!!!
    Izumi: Don't you mean "The Brady Bunch reunion"?
    Lina: Hey! I have a license to ad-lib, courtesy of the author!
    • In her debut in this series, Hitori has the first line of the prologue: "It's so good for me to actually perform for the first time, after I served as a stagehand behind the scenes of Cinderella when my class staged it. Although, I did enjoy saying Break a leg to Mizuri when she went onstage as the Fairy Godmother, as well as helping out with the props needed for each scene. I kinda envy Shugo; she actually got the part of Prince Charming in a stage production she did freelance with other Cures once, and she pulled it off in a suit! How much more awesome and creative can actors get?"
  • Canon Discontinuity: Per Word of God. That doesn't stop canon from being referenced here, though.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Yoko to Asa, as Emiru learned the hard way after kissing her at the end of Soul Eater:
    Yoko: Asa's mine, OK?
    Emiru: Whatever you say.
  • Clothing Damage: Even if Cures don't die in the course of each play, some of them will nevertheless have their costumes damaged in some way, only to be repaired magically by Jun. The most notable example is Haruki in Madoka Magica, when he runs himself and Asa through with a halberd and later gets riddled with bullet holes by Yumi. Jun resurrects him both times, and each time, she performs full repairs on him; his dress looks as good as new whenever he returns.
  • Cluster F-Bomb:
    • Hanae, of all people, swears a lot when her role in Kämpfer calls for it. Also, Lina drops the F bomb a lot in the prologue to Tales from Earthsea (though she cools off during the staging of the production proper) and throughout Angel Beats!.
    • It's hinted in the prologue to Tales from Earthsea that Hiroku tells dirty jokes, and Hoshiko swears every time she loses a judo match. Ayumu even claims that swearing gives you freedom.
  • Comedic Underwear Exposure:
    • In Madoka Magica, after Yasu commits Pietà Plagiarism with Haruki's dead body, as she lays it on the ground Hiroko gets a glimpse up his dress and actually Nose Bleeds at the sight.
    • In Inspector Gadget, Hitori's pants get pulled down by her robotic double during a fight scene. She's wearing powder blue boxers.
  • Comic-Book Time: Averted; the anthology series takes place after the Lovely and Wild Angels return from their first world tour.
  • Covert Pervert: Yasu's perverted side is much more evident when she portrays Gin in Rosario + Vampire.
  • Cross-Cast Role: All installments have at least one, but the Cardcaptor Sakura cycle of plays REALLY takes this up to eleven by doing this to EVERY major character (save for Méilíng Lǐ). Especially hilarious during any of Xiǎoláng Lǐ's Shirtless Scenes, where Hanae wears chest binders and a skintight flesh-colored top that evokes a mix between Barbie Doll Anatomy and an unintentional Uncanny Valley.
  • Crossdresser: Several Cures appearing in an anime reenactment should expect to play at least one male character; even Ginga Yamabuki played Taniguchi in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. If and when it happens, Haruki is slated to portray Kokoa Shuzen in Rosario+Vampire Capu2. Here's how it's slated to turn out:
    Yasu: I'm nominating my kid brother for the part of Kokoa, hands down. Anyone with me?
    Chiara: Aye!
    Chloe: Aye!
    Shugo: Aye!
    Mitsuuru: Uh... [Shugo jabs him in the rib] aye!
    Ayameko: Aye!
    [After everyone casts their vote]
    Sakura: The ayes have it!
    Haruki: ...It's a fair cop.
  • Crucified Hero Shot: Haruki gets one after Yumi empties several rounds into him in Madoka Magica. Also, as Lina as Kyubey lectures Chiara as Madoka about the history of magical girls, Mitsuuru gets one in the form of him standing en pointe with his arms in the second position. And he manages to hold that position for the entirety of the lecture!
  • Cuddle Bug: Jun tries to do this to comfort Chiara when the latter is upset over being passed over for the part she wanted, but Hiroko tells her it wouldn't work. She succeeds at snapping Hanae out of a Heroic BSoD using this tactic, though.
  • invokedTheDanza: In Kämpfer, Sakura Cobain portrays Kaede Sakura. Surprisingly averted in the Cardcaptor Sakura cycle of plays, where she instead plays Clow Reed and Eriol Hiragizawa, and the titular Sakura is instead a Cross-Cast Role played by Haruki.
  • Demoted to Extra: Hoshi, Yukari, and Mia get the shaft in favour of Emiru again — not surprising, as the author's an Emiru fan.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Here.
    Lori: Meaningless resistance is meaningless.
    Shugo: And obvious troll is obvious.
  • "Die Hard" on an X: The Soul Eater story they perform has the main characters fighting a bomb threat that could level Las Vegas.
  • Disney Death: Mitsuuru as Maka in Soul Eater and Shugo as Ash in Pokémon: The First Movie. Michelle is a notable example in that she actually dies when Ayameko impales her from behind in Kore Wa Zombie Desuka, but when Ichiji brings her body into the wings, Jun restores her to life in time for the next scene.
    • This trope is abused in Madoka Magica, where all six of the leads except for Mitsuuru (because his character DOESN'T die) and Lina (because she's supplying her character's voice from a booth hidden from the stage) die at least once, sometimes (particularly Yumi) in EXTREMELY gruesome ways.
    • Hitori gets this twice in character as Inspector Gadget: the first time, when she as Gadget gets caught in an explosion, and the second time, when Maria as Dr. Claw crushes her chip.
  • Dragged into Drag: Haruki gets this in the planned adaptation of Rosario+Vampire Capu 2, as the girls vote in favor of him being Kokoa Shuzen. Also, his character in Ouran High School Host Club happens to dress as a girl in the final scene, and the Kore Wa Zombie Desuka episodes put him in the role of a zombie forced to become a Magical Girl. In all instances, this makes him and Yasu Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy, as in Rosario+Vampire Capu 2 Yasu portrays Ginei Morioka; her character in Ouran, Kyoya Ohtori, is one of those who dresses up as a Takarazuka male impersonator in the final scene; and her character in Kore Wa Zombie Desuka? is a male student, Orito.
    • By the time he portrays Kyoko Sakura in Madoka Magica, Haruki is used to having to crossdress, which explains his confidence as he picked up the red henshin device (though he does have some doubts about whether said device will work on boys, which is why he says "Here goes" when Chiara has him, Yumi, Asa, and Mitsuuru recite the henshin phrase with her).
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Yasu calls out James for "insult[ing] Jamaicans" in the intro to Pokémon: The First Movie, using archaic pronouns (including "thou") to show her displeasure at such jokes (a reference to a joke The Nostalgia Critic did when he reviewed said movie). However, nobody calls out Shugo for making a similar joke about Vikings ("They mostly live in Minnesota!"), since it was in the movie, after all.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: Haruki's dress in Madoka Magica looks a little like this, and it opens up above his waist and goes down, revealing a black undershirt and short pink and maroon striped skirt. He also wears gray nylon arm warmers reaching up to his shoulders, black thigh-high stockings, and maroon knee-length boots.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: "Yasu-kun" for Yasu, who constantly insists that her fangirls use that nickname on her enough times as it is. However, she doesn't mind Chloe calling her a "pretty boy" when she first takes the stage as Yuta Kirishima in Ultra Maniac.
  • Every Proper Lady Should Curtsy: Even Shugo herself curtsies at one point, while wearing a labcoat as Kramer in one scene in Inspector Gadget. Mitsuuru and Haruki also curtsy during the photo shoot in the prologue to Madoka Magica, and in the closing credits all five performers playing magical girls (including Mitsuuru and Haruki) curtsy in their magical girl outfits, with Shugo taking a photo on her Nintendo 3DS for the occasion.
  • Evil Laugh: Lina gets one in the prologue to Madoka Magica after monologuing about how being Kyubey would be a Flanderization of her own, less obvious Villain Protagonist side. Her laugh is extremely creepy there.
    • Mitsuuru does it twice in Angel Beats!, the first time being lampshaded after he gloats about how his team will win the baseball game.
  • invokedFatalMethodActing: Happens once in Kore Wa Zombie Desuka when Ayameko throws a shuriken at high speed, and it goes straight through Michelle, who dies instantly. Emiru is stunned, stating, "This is the first time ever someone died in this anthology series." After Ichiji does the finger-pricking scene, she carries Michelle's body backstage, and Jun resurrected Michelle in time for the next scene. In Madoka Magica, Chiara, Asa, Yumi, and Haruki all die multiple times, all as a result of performing the play in the first place. For realism, Yumi had to be smothered to pieces for real when Mami finds herself on Charlotte's menu, and Haruki ran himself and Asa through with his halberd, only having time to say their respective characters' last words before dying. The second time Haruki dies during the play is because Yumi emptied several rounds into him during a Freak Out. At this point, Yasu acknowledges that the cast had run afoul of two of the three Rules of a Horror Movie Trilogy (specifically, the first two rules) and proceeds to name all three rules.
  • Foreign Cuss Word: Mitsuuru as Maka yells "Scheiße!" after all those souls escape Shugo as Soul and Izumi as Blair emerges from the trapdoor. It carries enough impact to shock Shun, who was backstage. "Oh, verdammt... who taught him that one?"
    • Tessalia as the Computer Research Society president gets one herself under pressure from Mitsuuru as Haruhi to hand over a computer: "Putain!"
      • Did I forget to mention that Mitsuuru as Haruhi includes several of these in a profanity-laced tirade about how teachers stopped him and Hanae as Mikuru when they hadn't even reached 100 flyers? Among them were "scheißekopfen", "putain", "cabrón", "merde", and "Hu'tegh".
    • In Kämpfer, when Chiara as Natsuru accidentally lets Mikoto's name slip, she mutters to herself, "Oh, merde..." just as Izumi as Mikoto asks how she knew her name.
    • In Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka, when Haruki as Ayumu thinks his cover is blown and the entire school thinks he's crossdressing for the hell of it, he yells, "OSTIE!" That's right, he used a sacre.
  • Freak Out: Hanae has a mild one after her first scene as Akane in Kämpfer.
  • Freudian Slip: It's pretty easy for Chiara to forget that she's "in development" and proclaim herself the flattest of her team whenever someone challenges her ability to play a boy before correcting herself and saying, "No, wait... I'M NOT FLAT! I'm still in development!", as seen in Kämpfer in response to Hana's skepticism about her ability to play a boy.
  • G-Rated Drug: The black blood from Soul Eater. However, it's so powerful it's often compared to steroids.
  • Gender Bender: Both Shugo and Yasu are turned into males by Jun for critical swimsuit scenes in The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya and The Rampage of Haruhi Suzumiya. The only noticeable change is that their chests obviously resembles those of young men (though on Shugo, even that's not very noticeable, as even as a girl she's a total washboard to begin with).
  • Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!: Izumi to Tessalia as the Computer Research Society is being extorted.
    • Ayameko to Sakura after the latter runs away from an unusually rough Hanae.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Emiru once again shows us why she's a Type III Anti-Hero when she directs the installments of Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka. In the first installment, she casts Asa Kawada as Kyoko, who turns out to be the serial killer all along, and gets berated by Yoko for doing so. "Bad enough that I'm still sore at you for kissing Asa in front of me!" In Jigoku Hen, she actually sends Hanae into a Heroic BSoD by casting her as the main villain. Just goes to show that when Emiru sits in the director's chair, anything is possible. On the other hand, she gives Yasu a role that would be perfect for her fashion preferences and casts Mitsuuru as a girl, as always.
  • Gorn: Actors actually die performing in Madoka Magica; however, this trope is in full effect when Yumi's head is crushed in an animatronic portraying Charlotte and her body is dismembered.
    • Played for laughs in Kore Wa Zombie Desu ka; each time Haruki gets a fatal injury (e.g. being cut in half, dismembered, or blown up), a charm Jun places on him before the play starts keeps him alive until Jun is supposed to fix his injury backstage. This gets to the point where, after he gets blown up over the stage and his body parts fall to the ground, even Yasu is apathetic, saying, "I know Jun's going to fix him up, so I'm not even going to shed a tear this time."
  • Groin Attack: Good thing a girl (Rizuka) is playing the guru training Hitori as Inspector Gadget; otherwise, someone would never have kids unless Jun was on hand to perform a healing spell on him.
  • Heroic BSoD: Hanae, after learning she'd play the villain in Kore Wa Zombie Desu ka Jigoku Hen. Never mind that this role is Emiru's excuse to stuff her in a Gothic Lolita dress; the very thought of her playing the villain sends her into a deep funk that she only comes out of when Jun goes into mascot form and cuddles with her, not caring about the fact that the two would be fighting on opposite sides, if only for the duration of the play.
  • Hijacked By Bludworth: After Jun resurrects Yumi, Lina shows up in a backstage scene as a non-black, blonde-haired, and female version of William Bludworth to intimidate Yumi by rubbing it in that she was supposed to have died when Charlotte smothered her to pieces and giving her advice on how to avoid Death the next time it comes for her, warning her that if she pisses Death off too much, "it could initiate a horrifying fury that will terrorize even the Grim Reaper. And you don't even want to FUCK with that MacDaddy!" Lina returns as Bludworth after Chiara kills Yumi again and Jun resurrects her, to basically tell her, "I told you so."
  • How Do I Shot Web?: Hitori has a temporary cyborg body (made possible by Jun's magic) when she portrays Inspector Gadget. Predictably, she has to be shown the ropes by Erika.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Any time a character says "Watch your fucking language!"
  • If It's You, It's Okay: Shugo to Hisato in Princess Tutu clarifying that the tutu he's wearing would look ridiculous on her... though she wouldn't mind if she saw Mitsuuru in a tutu.
    • Chiara also says the tutu looks adorable on Hisato.
    • Ichiji, Chiara, Kane, and Mitsuuru are the only performers who don't complain about Haruki wearing a frilly pink dress in Kore Wa Zombie Desuka or otherwise mock him. Michelle, while complimenting him on his strength, at the same time tells him exactly what she thinks about his dress:
    Michelle: You're a crossdressing piece of shit festering in a bag of rotten garbage, but I believe in your strength.
    • After Haruki dies a second time in Madoka Magica, Yasu tells him, "Even if you're wearing a dress, you still look beautiful, and your face so serene and peaceful, even in death."
  • Instant Cosplay Surprise: At one point, Maria finds herself dressed as Nanoha Takamachi because Lyra had snapped her fingers.
  • Irony as She Is Cast: In-universe - in the Shugo Chara! cycle of plays, Mitsuuru, a prodigy at ballet, is cast as a clumsy ballerina.
  • It's Quiet… Too Quiet: "The desert's quiet, with no sign of danger... and that in itself is a clear sign of danger." Guess what happens next.
  • Kicked Upstairs: Shugo goes through this in Princess Tutu due to her absolute lack of ballet training and even more absolute disinterest in lessons. Of course, it's not a punishment, just something the other participants think best for her.
  • Large Ham: Izayoi as Mr. Cat, according to Shun and Hanae. Lina tends to be hammy during productions as well, especially if the original character is also hammy.
  • invokedLesYay: There's some of it among Cures that portray romantically-linked characters (unless one Cure in the pairing happens to be male).
  • Literal-Minded: Chiara drops the F bomb when told to swear.
  • Made of Iron: Both Haruki and Asa were charmed by Jun before Kore Wa Zombie De suka so that fatal injuries couldn't do them in. In Asa's case, the charm lasts A LOT longer, as she needs time to go backstage and be followed by Jun after the scene ends.
  • Man, I Feel Like a Woman: In a G-rated version of this trope, after transforming into a Magical Girl for the first time in the prologue to Madoka Magica, Haruki twirls around in his dress.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Several examples, mainly from Mitsuuru and Shugo, but in the prologue to Madoka Magica, during the photo shoot, Ayameko (in a casual purple T-shirt and blue jeans) balletically lifts Haruki (in his magical girl costume for the play) for a photo.
  • Meido:
    • Averted in Kore Wa Zombie Desu ka, surprisingly enough. Michelle, Chiara, and Mitsuuru, as well as the other girls playing vampire ninjas, are dressed more like a traditional orchestra, with Michelle and Chiara in tuxedos and Mitsuuru in, you guessed it, a formal dress. The rest of the girls wear one of the two different costumes depending on their overall personality (e.g. the tomboyish Izumi wears a tuxedo, and the girly Hiroko wears a formal dress).
    • Played straight early on in Gunslinger Girl by Mitsuuru, Izayoi, and Haruki during the hotel assassination mission.
  • N-Word Privileges: Hanae gets booed for saying "white trash", earning her a scolding from Shugo (as the same gringos that boo her for perceived racism had already booed twice over sensitive issues to be touched so lightly).
  • Off with His Head!: Yasu threatens to do this to Haruki if he brings up her role as Dr. Stein. This happens early on in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya — during preparations, yet!
    • Yumi's head is crushed in Madoka Magica, and when Jun resurrects her it has to magically regenerate itself.
      • Maria as Dr. Claw threatens to do this to Shugo as Kramer if she doesn't remove the chip inside Hitori as Inspector Gadget. However, she gives her points for merely locating it before she had fainted.
  • Oh, Crap!: In Princess Tutu, when Shun, who is watching the play with Shugo and Hanae, sees Izayoi as Mr. Cat show up, she says, "Oh, verdammt... here comes the top cat."
    • From Angel Beats!: "WATCH OUT FOR THE BULLET TRAIN!" Sure enough, the "Bullet Train" is, in fact, a high-speed, technologically advanced, bullet train-like transportation device used by students who want to go from Oriyama Junior High to Isuten Junior High and back. Needless to say, all performers and crew members dive into the dead end right before the "Bullet Train" shows up. Apparently, Mitsuuru knows about it, as does Shugo; they have both used it to go between schools at times while they were in junior high.
  • Once an Episode: If Shun's involved, expect Mitsuuru to say "Scheiße" at least once. If the Auriville sisters are involved, he'll say "Putain" and/or "Merde" somewhere down the line. Bonus points if the foreigner either calls him out on his language or wonders privately where he learned that word.
    • However, most of the time Mitsuuru's mouth is surprisingly clean.
  • One-Mario Limit: Lampshaded by Chiara in Ouran High School Host Club; when she draws her slip and winds up getting the part of Haruhi Fujioka, she says, "At least I'll be playing someone named Haruhi. Arguably less famous, but still the only other one to be remembered a lot in anime circles."
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Hanae as Akane about Chiara as Natsuru.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In Kämpfer, Hanae winds up playing a Jekyll & Hyde type; the Hyde side of her character is OOC, and though she wavers at first, Hanae quickly starts taking her role seriously and manages to say "fuck" more than a few times. In the prologue to Tales from Earthsea, it's revealed that the whole affair left her traumatized, and Lina gets called out by Ikuko for rubbing it in that Hanae swore quite a bit in Kämpfer. This is otherwise inverted in this series; as this is a gag series, OOC is usually Played for Laughs.
  • invoked The Other Darrin: In Princess Tutu, Chiara plays Ahiru, and Mitsuuru plays her alter ego.
  • Pardon My Klingon: In Tales from Earthsea, Hiroko, who normally never swears, yells "E chu ta!" and is called out on her language by Lina, who apparently is fluent in Huttese.
  • Pass the Popcorn: In the Princess Tutu episode, Shugo, Yasu, and Shun eat popcorn and converse while watching Hanae give ballet lessons to participants in the production that require ballet lessons for their roles (including, but not limited to, Chiara, Mitsuuru, Hisato, Ayameko, and Tessalia—all of who are wearing the clothes they arrived in, meaning yes, Hisato's still wearing that tutu over his casual outfit).
  • The Password Is Always "Swordfish": Shugo as Kyon lampshades this by saying, "I'm too smart for 'Swordfish'."
  • Pietà Plagiarism: Yasu carries Haruki's dead body backstage this way after Yumi empties several rounds into him during her Freak Out.
  • Playboy Bunny: Mitsuuru as Haruhi and Hanae as Mikuru, both in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Mitsuuru pulls it off again as Masumi in Kämpfer.
  • invoked Playing Against Type: The usually girly Chiara portrays a Shorttank (Kasumi/Misty) in Pokémon: The First Movie as well as male-to-female Gender Bender character Natsuru Seno in Kämpfer. In the latter production, Hanae, who usually is polite, plays the shy-Meganekko-by-day-Gun-Crazy-Cluster-F-Bomber-by-night Akane Mishima.
  • Precision F-Strike: Shun as Tezca refers to participants in dead pools as "scheißekopfen" in Soul Eater, and Mitsuuru as Maka yells the S word in frustration earlier in the play. Mitsuuru as Haruhi in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya drops an F bomb during the Computer Club extortion scene. (Of course, the word is censored.)
    Mitsuuru: Then I'll tell everyone at school that all you geeks ganged up on her and fucked her!
    • It should be noted that Ayameko realized that Mitsuuru meant business when he said that.
    • James as Corey says the S word in Pokémon: The First Movie and referred to Shun as Mewtwo as "that arsehole". As described, the strongest he went up to that point was the occasional "hell" and "damn".
    • Hanae says her first swear word ever in response to Izayoi's hammy acting in Princess Tutu. She gets a lot worse in Kämpfer, to the point where there isn't a single part in the performance where she doesn't say at least one word that's even partially asterisked out (though she only drops a few F bombs... at first).
      • Speaking of Kämpfer, we get Chiara's priceless reaction to learning the reason behind the Kampfer War: "What. The. FUCK!?" And this was after she had previously dropped the F bomb only twice in her entire life, both times in the play.
    • After hearing the phrase in Tales from Earthsea, Jun asks Haruki what "E chu ta" means. She'd regret asking immediately after.
    Haruki: Something akin to "Go fuck yourself."
    [Jun's eyes widen in shock at what she just heard]
    Jun: Haruki! I'm surprised at you!
    • In Rosario+Vampire, Yasu as Gin mutters, "Holy shit..." when the Public Safety Commission shows up to cause trouble for the Newspaper Club.
    • In Kore Wa Zombie Desu ka, Jun swears quite a bit, usually "bloody", "bugger", "arse", or the odd "hell" and "damn". However, after Haruki as Ayumu transforms into a Magical Girl for the first time, Jun as Haruna cracks a very offensive joke: "You're a boy who transformed into a Magical Girl. A chick with a dick! How original!" Notable as the only time Jun ever uses strong profanity. A very surprised and offended Haruki asks her where in the Hallowed Wellspring she picked up that word.
    • Haruki gets two in Madoka Magica: "You son of a bitch... give me a break! You've turned us into zombies!" after Lina as Kyubey lets him know the Awful Truth, and "I'm not FUCKING going out without you!" right before he and Asa die (he says the line right as he holds his halberd behind him in one hand and a Soul Gem prop in the other and runs himself through with the halberd, piercing the Soul Gem and landing a fatal blow on Asa as he drives the halberd further).
      • Earlier, Yumi, who previously claimed to never swear, says "Oh, Crap!" multiple times right before her head gets crushed.
  • Prepare to Die: Mitsuuru as Maka to Ayumu as Asura. Also, Hanae as Akane has said "fuck off and die" twice so far in Kämpfer.
  • Product Placement: A Yahoo! billboard features twice so far: in Inspector Gadget after Hitori's car accident ends with her Chevette knocking the billboard over onto the limousine, and in Kore Wa Zombie Desuka when Hanae knocks one over as a Kick the Dog moment for Chris in her first official appearance (i.e. not as Takeshi Kurusu), and it nearly crashes onto Michelle before Haruki tackles her out of the way. Both times, the Yahoo! yodel ("YAHOOOOOO-OOO!") plays as the billboard falls.
  • Questionable Casting: In-universe; Izayoi is upset she wasn't given the part of Black Star. Yoko is generous enough to have her and Haruki trade parts.
    • In The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Bia Hoshigo basically triggers this when she suggests Chiara for Haruhi, Hisato for Kyon, and Shugo for Taniguchi. After a compromise, Chiara and Izayoi and Hisato and Ginga trade parts, and Mitsuuru and Shugo keep their original roles. However, Chiara's reaction is to BLOW UP, forcing Ginga and Shugo to follow her. Shugo then goes into a speech about the fruits of doing your duty before offering to make sure Chiara gets cast as Tsuruya the next time they perform an abridged Haruhi Suzumiya play (Tsuruya first appears in the next light novel, The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya). She accepts the offer.
      • This doesn't stop Hisato from trying to get a new Haruhi and Kyon. It backfired when Jun stalled him long enough for the play to begin before he could talk it over with Ayameko. When the group does The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya later on, Ayameko says, "All the players whose characters appear in the previous installment shall reprise their roles for this and all future installments of Haruhi Suzumiya — absolutely no exceptions. And that means you too, Hisato! Oh, and I didn't forget about you, Chiara. You'll be Tsuruya."
    • In the prologue of Princess Tutu, Chiara and Mitsuuru are in the running for the part of Ahiru (Hanae is out of the running due to being more experienced at ballet than most of the rest of the cast and Shugo requiring her assistant director to have experience). Instead of invoking this trope, though, the author decided on a coin toss to decide who gets the part. Bia (and in effect, Chiara) chose heads. They lost. Bia then blows up over the decision before calming down when the author goes "What the hell, Bia?"
    • In Ultra Maniac, Yasu and Azuki go into a heated competition over the part of Yuta Kirishima.
    • Bia is so serious about the author not casting Hanae as Mami in Madoka Magica (as she doesn't want Hanae to have her head crushed and her body dismembered), she actually threatened to pull ALL her characters from future installments if she played Mami. As a result, Mami will now be played by Yumi. An allusion to Bia's concerns can be found in the prologue, when Hanae tries to pick up a henshin device used by the girls in the anime, only for Chiara to deny her a role on the grounds that Hanae would get smothered to pieces if she picked up the gold henshin device, and Bia does NOT want that to happen (though she apparently considers Chiara herself to be fair game for being killed). Hanae backs off immediately, and Yumi picks up the gold henshin device.

  • Recursive Crossdressing: Averted; Shugo doesn't include the Lust chapter of the Book of Eibon due to this trope (she plays Soul, and Mitsuuru plays Maka, for those who were wondering), much to Haruki's relief.
    • Also averted in Rosario+Vampire Capu2; as it's based on the anime, and not the manga, Shugo doesn't get to play a boy disguised as a girl. This is probably to her relief (though Tsukune does wear hakama pants as part of his disguise in the scene in question).
      • Played straight, though, in Ouran High School Host Club, when during the final scene, Mikuru and Michiru play boys dressed as girls, and Hisato plays a boy dressed as a Takarazuka male impersonator. Oh, and to make things even crazier, Yasu and Shun also play boys dressed as Takarazuka male impersonators for a total of FOUR levels of recursivity.
      • Also played straight in Fractale by Ayameko, of all people. Unlike most of the girls who play boys on a regular basis, though, she's not afraid to wear a dress, as seen in a few later episodes of Pretty Cure Perfume Preppy (most notably the wedding episode and the episode where the Cures visit the Scent Kingdom). Of course, that doesn't mean she shows it most of the time; she doesn't even appear in her Oriyama High uniform even when all her teammates do so in the prologue to Angel Beats!, instead wearing the male Oriyama Junior High uniform (which she borrowed from Pittan).
      • Speaking of Angel Beats!, all performers wearing the SSS male uniform that are female are Recursive Crossdressers by default (as the uniform is actually a modified version of the female uniform worn by the conformists). It just isn't obvious because they're all wearing pants.
  • Running Gag: If Chiara and Mitsuuru are competing for the same role, it seems to be a law that Chiara has to pitch a fit over not getting the part (as seen in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Princess Tutu).
  • School Uniforms are the New Black: An unnecessary example in Madoka Magica: while it's summer vacation, their teammates are wearing their casual outfits, and they themselves have casual outfits to wear, Yasu and Haruki wear their school uniforms (Yasu wears a short gray tunic and gray pants, and Haruki wears a short gray tunic and gray tights). Haruki says he's only wearing tights with his uniform to impress Nanami, who he knows will be present along with the rest of the Mirai Academy Student Council; normally he dresses more masculinely on casual outings, though he does wear gray pants with his uniform more often like Yasu does with hers, and he mentions that on one casual outing (which happened to be a week before the performance) Jun had him wear a Sailor Fuku cosplay she got for him; as he had gotten used to having to crossdress, he agreed to walk around in it for the day.
    • A straighter example is Mitsuuru Takahashi, who when not in costume for any given installment wears the Isuten High female uniform (which except during installments set in the summer includes a black leather jacket), along with white tights and either Mary Janes (for most installments) or toe shoes (in Princess Tutu).
  • The Scottish Trope: In Angel Beats!:
    Yasu: You know, guys, I've been wondering: how the bloody hell do students go between schools without losing too much time?
    Mitsuuru: WATCH OUT FOR THE BULLET TRAIN!
    [The cast and crew dive into the dead end just as the "Bullet Train" passes by with a handful of Isuten Junior High students]
    Mitsuuru: If you don't want something extremely dangerous and life-threatening to the cast and crew to show up and try to kill them, don't mention how they work!
  • Shirtless Scene: Shugo and Yasu get a couple while in male bodies. However, the most notorious Shirtless Scene has to go to Hitori in the scene where Dr. Claw has Inspector Gadget at his mercy. Fortunately, Hitori's magic-induced cyborg form has no chest covering, as her inner gizmos are in plain sight with her top off, so nothing inappropriate there!
  • Shorttank: Various Cures play roles that fit this part. Ayameko plays Sweet/Neesha in Pokémon: The First Movie, for example. Other Cures that take on a Shorttank role include actual Shorttank Izumi (most notably as Mikoto in Kämpfer), Chiara (who somehow pulls it off as Kasumi/Misty in Pokémon: The First Movie and Maelstrom in both installments of Kore Wa Zombie Desuka), and even resident twirl girl Hanae (when her character in Kämpfer, Akane, is in Kampfer mode).
  • Shout-Out: Like Doug Walker, Shugo flips out at the sight of... A BAT CREDIT CARD!?!?!? I'LL KILL YOU! I'LL KILL YOU ALL!
  • Skate Heaven Is a Place on Earth: In Angel Beats!, the play takes place all around the Oriyama Junior High campus. The river scene takes place in the indoor pool, and the scenes that take place in Guild reveal that there's an underground tunnel that connects Oriyama Junior High with Isuten Junior High and goes down VERY deep at a dead end at one point. Coincidentally, that dead end ends up matching the basic structure of Guild. Props representing the Death Trap are placed all over the dead end.
  • Sound Effects: All over the place in Inspector Gadget; for example, after Hitori crashes her car it hits a billboard, which collapses on the limousine as the Yahoo yodel plays (it's even onomatopoeia-ized as "YAHOOOOOO-OOO!", complete with the quotation marks), and later, "Think!" plays when Hitori is trying to figure out how to trip up two jewelry store burglars.
  • Special Edition Title: After the prologue to each installment, we see the characters getting into costume and otherwise preparing for the play being performed in that particular installment as music related to the source material plays and the title is shown, followed by the names of the characters playing their respective characters and the name of the director and AD.
  • Springtime for Hitler: Hanae as Akane thinks that flipping Sakura's skirt won't get her to hate Chiara as Natsuru. Shugo then explains how it'd be like trying to set up a musical called Springtime for Hitler.
  • Stock British Phrases: After receiving a shock from her brother's Precision F-Strike in Pokémon: The First Movie (specifically, "God, you're such an arsehole"), Yasu says "Oh, blimey" in amazement.
    • In a later play (Rosario+Vampire Capu 2), when Haruki learns that a good portion of the girls (as well as Mitsuuru) voted in favor of him being Kokoa, he says, "It's a fair cop."
    • The Kore Wa Zombie Desuka episodes have Jun saying "bloody", "bugger", and "arse" several times in the course of both plays.
  • Stock Scream: Shugo as Soul manages to pull off the "Howie Long Scream" toward the end of the play. Earlier, when Mitsuuru as Maka is ploughing through a crowded building to deactivate a bomb, Haruki as one unlucky patron emits the Wilhelm Scream—right after Mitsuuru yells, "That calls for a Wilhelm Scream!"
  • Stoic Spectacles: Yasu as Autor in Princess Tutu (she had specifically requested a role that didn't require ballet lessons, and Autor just happened to be not only a music student but a megane as well).
  • Take That!: Izumi as Mikoto references the Cold War in a way that compares it to the fights between the Red and Blue Kampfer factions.
  • They Killed Kenny: Chiara, Yumi, Haruki, and Asa all die at least once in Madoka Magica; however, every time the timeline is reset in the play, they come back to life backstage and look as if nothing actually happened. Lampshaded by Yumi when she kills Haruki: "I'm sorry I have to kill you a second time; however, I know you'll be back by the time the play ends." Doesn't mitigate the fear in Haruki's eyes as Yumi empties several rounds into him. Yasu, who is watching the whole scene in shock, says, "I've been dead before, but now Haruki's officially been dead more often than I have."
  • This Is for Emphasis, Bitch!: Surprisingly, Hanae utilizes this trope several times as Akane in Kämpfer. For example:
    Hanae: Checkmate, bitch.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Mitsuuru as Haruhi declares this concerning the lack of a computer in the Literature Clubroom.
  • Those Wacky Nazis: Not really Nazi-like, but Mitsuuru as Haruhi says, "Achtung!" when announcing the SOS Brigade's name.
  • invokedThrowItIn: Any time Xiǎoláng Lǐ incorporates ballet into his style, that's actually Hanae improvising from her own ballet training.
  • Tights With A Skirt: Expect this from some of the performers, given their characters; the most notable example is Mitsuuru, but other characters have employed this as well, including Haruki.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: There's plenty, including Yasu and Hiroko, Izumi and Yasu, Shun and Izumi, Ayameko and Chiara, Hitori and Mizuri, Shugo and Sakura, Lina and Michelle, Asa and Yoko, and Yoko and Asa. However, several other Cures act tomboyish during plays, including Chiara as Kasumi/Misty in Pokémon: The First Movie, Natsuru in Kämpfer (where, depending on their characters' forms, she and Hanae will be the Tomboy to each other's girly girls), Haruhi in Ouran High School Host Club, and Maelstrom in the Kore Wa Zombie Desuka? plays (where she's the Tomboy to Michelle's Girly Girl) and even Hanae herself as Akane at several points in Kämpfer (in normal mode, she the Girly Girl to Chiara and Izumi's Tomboys, and in Kampfer mode, she's the Tomboy to Chiara and Shio's Girly Girls).
  • invokedTypeCasting: Mitsuuru and Shugo will almost always play the lead couple (among the exceptions are Princess Tutu, where Mitsuuru will go solo as Shugo finds herself in the director's chair, Ultra Maniac, where the main couple will be played by Chloe and Ayamii-chan, and Pokémon: The First Movie, where Shugo and Mitsuuru play characters that aren't romantically linked).
    • Some people just can't accept Mitsuuru being typecast as the female lead. Most controversial is his casting as Princess Tutu (which was decided by a coin toss; however, some people just can't let it go).
  • invokedUncannyValley: Dropped by Hanae as Xiǎoláng Lǐ near the end of the first in the Cardcaptor Sakura cycle of plays:
    Hanae: What? Does my chest make me look like something straight from the Uncanny Valley?
    Chloe: Damn right it does.
  • invokedUnsettlingGenderReveal: When Chiara's outfit gets ripped apart in Kämpfer, Mitsuuru has this trope in mind and reveals that "Guts Kingdom's prince [is] actually a girl!" Chiara as Natsuru later does this to Izumi as Mikoto accidentally.
  • Very Special Episode: Pokémon: The First Movie.
  • Villain Protagonist: Lina mentions after getting the part of Kyubey that while aligned with the Cures 100% of the time, she does have a less obvious, but soon to be Flanderized for the production, evil side "that's about to REAR ITS MANIPULATIVE, SLEAZY HEAD! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
  • invokedViralMarketing: Starting in Kämpfer, the Nintendo 3DS is mentioned at least once per play, timing be damned.
  • Voice Changeling: A side-effect of Hitori's magic-induced cyborg form is that she always speaks using Inspector Gadget's voice (supplied in the Japanese version by Tesshō Genda and in the English version by Maurice LaMarche).
  • Weak, but Skilled: Yasu often overexerts herself like never before in the course of a single play (for example, when she injects a sedative into Mitsuuru and Shugo to calm them down in Soul Eater, participates in Pokemon battles in Pokémon: The First Movie, fights off a heavily armed Bookman to protect Ayameko while she rewrites Drosselmeyer's story in Princess Tutu, wields a katana in combat in Angel Beats!, sacrifices herself to end the Fractale System in Fractale, uses Zantetsuken against Count Draco's army in The Castle of Cagliostro, participates in frequent martial arts fights in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, fights using werewolf powers and martial arts in Rosario + Vampire and Rosario + Vampire Capu 2, and fights Koopa's army with her brother and gets some convincing badass moments in Super Mario Bros.), but she doesn't have to drink bottled water as often as she used to. In one episode, she attributes this to a combination of tai chi practice and karate lessons on Pretty Cure Wonder Island, stating that even after parting ways with her first senseis, she continues to take private karate lessons under Izumi, who is revealed to take martial arts as one of her boyish hobbies.
  • Weather Dissonance: Expect Shugo to start each episode in a black leather jacket no matter whether or not it'll be too hot outside.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: A good portion of the cast, given the fact that there are girls in the cast, and there are always male roles to fill. When Shugo, Yasu, and Shun appear, they always play a male character. (e.g.: In Soul Eater, Shugo is Soul, Yasu is Dr. Stein, and Shun is Tezca; in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Shugo is Kyon, Yasu is Koizumi, and Shun is Okabe; in Princess Tutu, Shugo is the director, Yasu is Autor, and Shun is the narrator; in Kämpfer, Shugo is the director, Yasu is Higashida, and Shun is the assistant director; in Tales from Earthsea, Shugo is Arren, Yasu is Ged, and Shun is the king; and in Angel Beats!, Shugo is Otonashi, Yasu is Fujimaki, and Shun is the assistant director) On the flip side, you can always count on Mitsuuru to handle a female character (e.g. Maka in Soul Eater, Haruhi in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Princess Tutu in Princess Tutu, Masumi in Kämpfer, Therru in Tales from Earthsea, and Yuri in Angel Beats!).
    • Haruki is increasingly handling roles that require him to crossdress, including Kokoa Shuzen in Rosario+Vampire Capu 2, (ultimately) Hunny in Ouran High School Host Club, Ayumu in Kore Wa Zombie Desuka>, Kyoko Sakura in Madoka Magica, and Enri Granitz in Fractale. In Madoka Magica, he even dies for real TWICE while still in his dress as a magical girl (killed first by Asa and then by Yumi), both times being resurrected by Jun backstage.
    • Later additions to the troupe (specifically, Lina, Mikoto, and Hitori) also play boys exclusively.
  • A Wizard Did It: Shugo's explanation for the flowers appearing onstage in Princess Tutu. Also, when she asks how the venue they perform at in a particular play could conveniently have the costumes and props they need for that play before a later play, Mitsuuru says, "It's magic. It doesn't have to be explained." Shugo replies, "I think the author's just putting them in the theatre for the sake of convenience, but I'll accept that explanation, if you can call it that."

OriCure AllStars Theatre: Legend of the Volcano Goddesses contains examples of:

  • Adaptation Expansion: Two more Luau Brothers (Luau Sisters in this version), tourists, roles from other Backyardigans episodes, and even a "cameo" by a rock band (see The Cameo) are added to the story.
  • Crossdresser: Rizuka, Shugo, Isuzu and Taiko as the Restart band, as well as Mitsuuru as the Island Shaman.
  • Not His Sled
  • The Cameo: Restart, obviously; subverted as it's actually Rizuka, Shugo, Isuzu and Taiko playing the parts of the members.
  • When She Smiles: Shinju as the Grumpy Empress, when Hiroku as Haukea finally makes her laugh. True, she was just acting, but still.
  • Most of the tropes applied to the original episode may also count.
