Category: Not Tropeworthy

Lead Bassist and Lead Drummer are, respectively, defined as Bassists and Drummers who serve as The Face Of The Band (instead of being basically forgotten as a backup musician). Since the latter trope was recently cut and disambiguated, the tropeworthiness of the two tropes are called into question, because "a bassist/drummer that happens to be a prominent member of the band even when they usually aren't" is not really tropeworthy on its own right. While doing the wick check for both pages, I discovered Lead Singer Plays Lead Guitar, and decided to do a wick check for all three.

Analysis

Lead Bassist is the oldest of the three (being made in 2011), and is the most problematic out of the bunch. It's divided into multiple—often overlapping—type labels, which makes the actual definition much harder to pin down. While it provides a note that this trope is not simply about "bassists that are really good", that seems to be pretty much how it's used. The majority of the examples (32%) are type-label ZCE. Of those that have some context, most of them (28%) are simply "bassist who also does vocals". Then there are plenty of examples of "Multiple categories" (16%), where the bassist in question apparently fits multiple type-labels, and most of them simply boil down to "the bassist has great techniques/skills".

Lead Drummer is released about three years after Lead Bassist, and while it doesn't have the confusing type labels as Lead Bassist does, it seems to have attracted the worst gushing problems. The majority of the examples (30%) are about how great and iconic the drummers (and/or their drumming style) are. 26% are ZCE and 20% are simply about drummers who also sing and/or write songs, or vice versa.

Lead Singer Plays Lead Guitar is a pretty recent trope, and it's really straightforward. The trope's main definition is Exactly What It Says on the Tin, and the usage (81%) reflect that. The problem is that this doesn't seem to be a trope. So what if the band's singer also plays lead guitar? Is there an unofficial band rule somewhere that the lead singer and lead guitarist are mutually exclusive positions that having a band member assume both roles is inherently noteworthy? A lot of solo musicians sing and play guitar simultaneously, so there doesn't seem to be much of a point to this trope existing.

Cut, cut, and cut.

    Overshadows other musicians
  1. Sleep: Al Cisneros is the frontman and his basslines are quite prominent in the music.
  2. tool: As is commonly the case with progressive metal bands, Danny Carey and Justin Chancellor probably get as much acclaim for their instrumental skill as guitarist Adam Jones does, probably qualifying both Carey and Chancellor as virtuosos and genre leads (Types A and D under the lead bassist trope). Carey is arguably the most noticeable member of the ensemble on Fear Inoculum, given the reduced role of vocals on the album.
  3. Joy Division: Peter Hook carried the melody on a Rickenbacker bass, not unlike Chris Squire or Geddy Lee. His tendency to play basslines rather high up on the bass came about because in the early days of the band, it was the only way he could be heard with a weak amplifier. Hook's playing inspired many subsequent indie rock bassists to use the upper register of the instrument. In fact, Bernard Sumner once said he's more into "rhythm and chords" than melody.

    Also does vocals
  1. Exhumed: The vast majority of their bassists have been Type B examples because of Exhumed's signature trade-off vocals. Matt "Slime" Ferri also qualified as a Type C due to his Memetic Badass status within the Philly metal scene.
  2. The Walker Brothers: Scott started as the group's bassist before becoming the lead singer and major creative force.
  3. Bang Dream Raise A Suilen: She's both the lead bassist and vocalist of RAISE A SUILEN.
  4. Da Yoopers: Everyone who has ever played bass for the band (except for Dick Bunce) has sung at least one lead vocal.
  5. Superchic[k]: Downplayed. While other members rank higher, Matt is still a prominent vocalist in the group in addition to being the bassist.
  6. Drama (Yes Album): While otherwise doing vocals, Horn performs the fretless bass in "Run Through the Light".
  7. The Brobecks: Dallon is a blend of Type A and B - he sings, writes his own songs and is pretty technically skilled too.
  8. Enslaved: Type B: Grutle is the lead vocalist. Also an arguable type D, as the bass is fairly important in progressive metal, and his instrument is usually clearly mixed.
  9. Zao: Dan was briefly this in the early 2000's, handling both vocals and bass at their live shows before they hired a new bassist.
  10. Step Up to the Microphone: Guitarist Ray Herndon sang "Baby, I'm Loving You Now" and "Just the Thought of Losing You", and drummer Billy Thomas sang "Hangin' In and Hangin' On". Everything else was handled by Lead Bassist Terry McBride.
  11. Pink Floyd: Waters most prominently during the period from Animals to The Final Cut, during which he wrote most of the music himself and usually served as the lead vocalist.
  12. American Football: Mike Kinsellainvoked: Lead vocalist and former bassist.
  13. Space: Tommy started out as a Type A, playing bass as well as doing lead vocals, before Yorkie joined as bassist in 1997 and Tommy switched to guitar. Also wrong type label. Bassist doing lead vocals is Type B.
  14. Glenn Hughes: A Type B in Deep Purple where he shared vocal duties with David Coverdale. A Type C in his solo work, Black Country Communion and California Breed. Second part is ZCE.

    Famous/Prominent for Non-Musical Reasons
  1. LargeHam.Music: Red Hot Chili Peppers has quite a passionate singer in Anthony Kiedis ("GIVE IT AWAY, GIVE IT AWAY, GIVE IT AWAY NOW!")... but the biggest ham in the band is Lead Bassist Michael "Flea" Balzary.
  2. Project Sekai School Sekai: She primarily plays the bass and is considered the leader of the band and the SEKAI as a whole.
  3. Characters.Gorillaz: Type C since he's the band's co-founder, as well as a major Attention Whore. His actions also generally tend to drive the plot more than the other three's do.
  4. Pendulum (Band): Gareth McGrillen, of the "co-creator" type.
  5. Mr. Big: Sheehan, in the sense of both being skilled at bass and being known for pursuits outside of playing bass.
  6. Show by Rock!!: She is the leader and bassist of Criticrista.
  7. Rock Music: Lead Bassist Aimee Mann went solo, finding critical success (and an Oscar nomination) as a singer-songwriter.

Plays in musical genres where bass is prominent
  1. John Coltrane: Jimmy Garrison, the lone classic quartet member to stay with Coltrane when he went to free jazz territory, frequently went on impressionistic bass solos.

    Potholes and ZCE
  1. Nile: In spite of their revolving-door nature and frequently questionable lineup status, all of their bassists have been Type Bs.
  2. ChuckCunninghamSyndrome.Music: Numerous ex-members of Iron Maiden came and went in the three years prior to the band's first release, The Soundhouse Tapes. Steve Harris (the sole constant member) occasionally acknowledges their first two vocalists, Paul Mario Day and Dennis Wilcock, but almost never the other guitarists or drummers.
  3. Supertramp: Their 1970 self-titled debut album, featuring guitarist Richard Palmer-James writing all the lyrics and handling most of the vocals, Roger Hodgson playing bass, and almost no woodwinds (Hodgson plays flageolet on a few songs, but no saxophones are ever heard).
  4. BanG Dream!: Rei Wakana/LAYER
  5. Fell Voices: Nobody Loves the Bassist: Averted; the bass is mixed clearly on several albums and is even, in some places, the lead instrument.
  6. Inferi: Andrew Kim is a Type A, and Joel Schwallier before him also qualified.
  7. Brian Wilson: In the early years of The Beach Boys.
  8. Katalepsy: Anatoly is a type A and C.
  9. Six Feet Under: Jeff Hughell is a major Type A, but he doesn't really get a chance to go crazy here.
  10. The Moody Blues: John Lodge has become a Type B more and more with each album.
  11. Melt-Banana: Rika Hamamoto is a Type D.
  12. I Am the Band: The Dropkick Murphys are technically Lead Bassist Ken Casey.
  13. KISS: Gene is type B and C.
  14. W.A.S.P. (Band): Blackie was a Type C from 1982 (when Don Costa left) until 1986 (when Randy Piper left and Blackie took over rhythm guitar duties).
  15. LD50: Ryan is a Type A and arguably a Type C as well; after all, there are more than a few bassists out there who aren't particularly fond of Mudvayne's music as a whole but who are heavily influenced by his playing.
  16. Dying Fetus: Netherton and Beasley both qualify as types A and B, with Netherton additionally qualifying as a C due to his status as a founding member.

    Other uses
  1. Harry Potter Other Canon Humans: Witches and Wizards: Nobody Loves the Bassist: Seemingly averted. While not exactly the Lead Bassist, he has enough respect to be recognized by some Fangirls, his marriage makes the pages of the Daily Prophet

    Multiple categories
  1. Royal Blood: An unusual example of a Type A and B with Mike Kerr. He's the lead singer, but since the band has no guitarist, all of the epic riffs are done on a bass.
  2. Deep Purple:
    • Glenn Hughes is a Type B for MkIII/IV. ZCE
    • Roger Glover is a slight Type A - he is known as a very skilled bassist, with a lot of memorable playing. He's also skilled with several different instruments, and is a renowned producer. Not to mention that he was the only Deep Purple member that Ritchie Blackmore would let join Rainbow. Virtuoso.
  3. Type O Negative: Peter Steele was Type B ("Singer") and C ("Face"). He was the founder of Carnivore and Type O Negative, and he served as singer and bassist in both bands. He's also famous for being incredibly handsome (to the point of attracting male admirers, to his dismay), his deep vocals, and his rather dark and self-deprecating humor; many musicians and fans fondly remembered him for being a laidback Nice Guy who was generous to his bandmates and "kind" to the various other bands Type O Negative toured with.
  4. Sodom: Tom is the first three types, being a highly skilled bassist as well as the vocalist, songwriter and only constant songwriter.
  5. Rancid: Matt Freeman is Types A, C, and D, as his aggressive, technical style forms a big part of their sound.
  6. Rage (Band): Peavy is a type B (lead singer) and C (he is the only member to appear on all releases and Rage is basically his band).
  7. Blood Red Throne: Erlend Caspersen was a major Type A, as well as a Type C due to his overwhelmingly influential nature among metal bassists. Ole Madsen also qualifies as an A because he has to play Caspersen's material.
  8. Trivium: Paolo Gregoletto is Types A, B, and C, as he is known for his technical ability, is a prolific writer, and has handled the majority of the clean vocals live since the late 2000s.

Drummer also does vocals and/or write songs
  1. The Band: Levon Helm handled a good chunk of the lead vocals while he drummed.
  2. Entombed: Nicke Andersson was the band's primary songwriter before his departure and sang lead vocals on Clandestine due to LG Petrov having temporarily left.
  3. Excuse 17: CJ sang lead on "Decatur H.S". In a role reversal, Carrie played drums on this song. The drummer is not on the drums when taking the lead singer role.
  4. Kreator: Ventor is the next most consistent member after Petrozza and did lead vocals for the band early on.
  5. Chrome: Damon provided drums on the first four albums in addition to keyboards and vocals. Starting with Blood on the Moon, he delegated drumming to other members
  6. This Heat: Charles Hayward has the lion's share of vocals and a significant hand in the songwriting, though he still really wasn't the frontman in any traditional sense. He fully assumed this role with his subsequent band Camberwell Now.
  7. Defeated Sanity: Lille Gruber essentially is the band (though Schmidt does a lot as well) and writes most of the material, in addition to being known for his very unique style and extreme technical ability.
  8. The Boston Record: Ranjit Barot may not have his name in the band title, but he has plenty of soloing space and handles all of the vocal duties.
  9. Blue Öyster Cult: Albert Bouchard was the band's most prolific songwriter during his time with the band.
  10. Carpenters: Karen was this, early on anyway. She was an accomplished drummer who could play jazz-fusion style fills and grooves, she just so happened to be great at singing. As time went on, her role as a drummer was slowly phased out as she just became a vocalist.

Drummer is (one of) the most famous/prominent/visible member of the band
  1. Dennis Wilson: Got the most female attention of all the Beach Boys. Later on, he also really stepped up to the plate, becoming vital to even keeping the Beach Boys alive, as well as growing into a highly respected (if underappreciated) solo artist.
  2. Band-Maid: Akane was for a time Band-Maid's designated leader, despite the band being Miku's idea.
  3. Negură Bunget: Negru had aspects of this, as he tended to be the member of the band who interacted most with the press, and until his death, he was the only constant member of the band. The band didn't credit individual songwriters, so it's difficult to know who wrote what, but due to the continuity in sound between albums, it's reasonable to conclude that he was at least partially responsible for writing and arranging most of the band's songs, and his background in academia is certainly reflected in the band's lyrics, so one can conclude he probably wrote a lot of them. Wall of text aside, the entry is unclear and argues with itself about how much he's involved in the songwriting.
  4. Show by Rock!!: Despite not being the vocalist. Trope slashed with The Leader.

Drummer is really good or has an iconic style
  1. Ingested: Lyn Jeffs is known for his incredible speed, power, stamina, and accuracy.
  2. Death Metal: Also tends to happen quite a lot, due to the technical skill required of death metal drummers.
  3. Demolition Hammer: Vinny Daze's powerful, insistent, and precise drumming style formed an important stylistic trademark.
  4. Public Image Ltd.: On The Flowers of Romance, Martin Atkins' drums are as prominent in the mix as Lydon's vocals, sometimes overshadowing Levene's guitar and synthesizer.
  5. Slayer: Dave Lombardo is one of the most influential drummers in metal, and in thrash in particular, for his incredible speed, technical prowess, and power. He was one of the first drummers to extensively use incredibly fast double-kick drums, paving the way for extreme speed drumming in not just thrash but even heavier metal genres.
  6. Exodus (Band): Tom Hunting is the only remaining founding member, has historically played a large role in the band's overall creative direction, and is known for his technical ability, speed, and precision; as per Gary Holt, Kirk Hammett would regularly ask him to slow down because he was having trouble keeping up with him, and when Kirk jumped ship to Metallica and Gary found himself calling the shots, one of the first things he started doing was letting Tom play as fast as he wanted.
  7. John Coltrane: Worked with quite a few.
    • The most famous of his drummers is Elvin Jones, a classic quartet member whose polyrhythmic wailing on the drums proved almost as influential among rock drummers as Coltrane's own improv style.
    • Another example is Rashied Ali, whose own out-there style was a major component of Coltrane's free jazz era.
  8. Cream: Ginger Baker provided one of the first examples in rock music, and he remains one of the most noteworthy. He's also managed to accrue enormous respect as a jazz drummer (and indeed, he came from a jazz background to begin with).
  9. Meshuggah: Tomas Haake enjoys this status as both the band's primary creative force and as one of the best drummers in metal. This has been cemented with the band's decision to record promotional videos of him playing drums live.
  10. Symphony X: Jason Rullo is renowned for his technical skill and was actually called to audition for Dream Theater, though his response was along the lines of "thanks, but no thanks".
  11. Sepultura
    • Eloy Casagrande is famous for his great technical ability and precision, wild and energetic stage presence, and his aggressive and technical playing style that makes heavy use of polyrhythms. Even modern Sepultura's detractors will almost universally agree that regardless of what they think of the band, Eloy is a fantastic drummer.
    • Before that, Igor was both hailed as a great drummer and one of the band's faces, specially once his brother left.
  12. Cryptopsy: Flo is, along with Pete Sandoval, Mike Smith, Derek Roddy, George Kollias, and John Longstreth, viewed as one of the defining death metal drummers. Along with Longstreth and fellow Montreal resident Alex Pelletier, he was also one of the first big-name users of gravity blasts.
  13. Origin: John Longstreth. Part of it is his frightening technical prowess, part of it is just how many well-loved bands he's been a part of.
  14. Sarcófago: D.D. Crazy is notable for his relentless blast beat drumming and deceptively intricate fills.
  15. Alterbeast: While he is no longer a member of the band (though he is still very close with Lamb and the rest of the new lineup), Gabe Seeber is known for his great speed, technical prowess, power, and accuracy, as well as his frequent fill-ins and ability to comprehensively learn full sets on very short notice.

    Potholes and ZCE
  1. Cookie Run: Macaron Cookie
  2. Astro City Civilians And Others: Forms a Five-Man Band of superpowered musicians, with crimefighting as a sideline. Does not mention that he's a drummer, or that he's the leader.
  3. Mötley Crüe: Vince Neil and especially Mick Mars are overshadowed by Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee in the public eye.
  4. Stuck in Their Shadow: Tim Yeung, when he joined Morbid Angel. There's not much debate whether or not he is a skilled or famous drummer, but the guy he was filling the shoes for? Pete Sandoval, who is the Trope Codifier for Death Metal drumming.
  5. Koenjihyakkei: Yoshida qualifies as a Face of the Band, a Virtuoso, and a Genre Lead.
  6. Gong: Pierre Moerlen after Shamal, besides the fact that it was afterwards called Pierre Moerlen's Gong.
  7. Bosse-de-Nage: Harry Cantwell's frenetic percussion is one of this band's most acclaimed features.
  8. Oomph!: Until 2021 Dero Goi, though in concert a session drummer was employed.
  9. Tourniquet
  10. Exmortus: Mario Moreno formed one-half of the core of the band until he left.
  11. Disgorge: Myers is essentially the band (though Sanchez is the main writer), in addition to being one of the finer drummers.
  12. Royal Blood: Ben Thatcher is well known too, since they're a duo he doesn't get overshadowed.
  13. Hour of Penance: Mario Moreno formed one-half of the core of the band until he left.

    Other uses
  1. The 8-Bit Drummer: Why else do you think he's called "The 8-Bit Drummer"? He seems to be a solo musician, not a part of a band.
  2. Immortal: Abbath played drums on Pure Holocaust and Battles in the North. The artist is also listed as an example Lead Bassist. The Lead Drummer entry is a incorrectly-indented natter.
  3. Pinky Dinky Doo: In the episode, "Think Pink", Pinky can be seen playing the drums in the made-up story. Just a character playing drums.
  4. Reggae: Due to alternating drum types, most notably steel-drums and bongos, have made drums, like the bass, a very key feature. Not to mention it's unusual style of often not ending fills with climatic cymbals. Drum sounds are very prominent in this music genre.

    Multiple Categories
  1. Rush (Band):
    • Neil Peart, who is considered an extremely talented drummer (possibly one of the best of all time), and is also the main lyricist. Drummer lyricist
    • John Rutsey served as the master of ceremonies, introducing the songs in the band's early concerts. Drummer serving as M.C.'
  2. Suffocation: Mike Smith, who, in addition to being one of the most influential death metal drummers (along with Pete Sandoval), was also a frequent songwriter and a shrewd businessman who helped propel the band along a great deal. Dave Culross and Kevin Talley are similarly famous and influential drummers (not to mention Talley's Wolverine Publicity due to his innumerable live fill-ins and session appearances), though Dave is more known for his work with Malevolent Creation than his work with Suffocation.
  3. Aborted: Ken Bedene has made a name for himself in recent years due to his well-known speed, accuracy, power, technical ability, and creative cymbal work (having been referred to as a "human click track" due to his flawless replication of his parts live without ever using a click track), and he's also known for using a swivel-foot kick technique that allows for incredibly fast sustained double bass rolls; furthermore, he is a prolific songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has played a substantial role in guiding their modern creative direction. Simply put, Ken is the creative core of Aborted now that Mendel is gone, and while it is still Sven's band at the end of the day, he will basically always defer to Ken.
  4. Morbid Angel:
    • Pete Sandoval is probably the single most influential drummer in the entire genre of death metal. Ask a death metal drummer about their primary influences; Mike Smith, George Kollias, John Longstreth, Derek Roddy, Tim Yeung, Kevin Talley, and Flo Mounier all show up on a regular basis, but 99 times out of 100, they will always say Pete. Really influential drummer
    • Former drummer Mike Browning also sang lead vocals during his time with Morbid Angel, as heard on Abominations of Desolation. He has continued to both sing and drum in his subsequent bands. Drummer vocalist.
