Ohrangers

    In General
  • Contrasting Sequel Protagonist: To the Changemen as military-based Sentai teams that fight invaders from outer space. The key difference between them is, while the Changemen's power derives from the Earth Force while battling the invading alien forces, the Ohrangers' power is derived from Choriki energy, tied to ancient civilizations, which is tied to the origins of the robots that the Ohrangers battle.

    Gorō Hoshino/Oh Red

Captain Gorō Hoshino/Oh Red | Actor: Masaru Shishido

    Shouhei Yokkaichi/Oh Green

Lieutenant Shouhei Yokkaichi/Oh Green | Actor: Kunio Masaoka

  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Trained in Boxing.
  • The Big Guy: Thanks to his background in boxing and heavy-to-wield Square Crushers, he is the team's heavy hitter.
  • Foil: He is more impulsive and fun-loving in order to balance out his cool-headed and straight-laced commander.
    • Best exemplified when he Applauded Bara Darts skillful display of his version of William Tell earning him a Dope Slap.
  • Meaningful Name: Yokkaichi means rectangle.
  • Signature Move: Denko Choriki Crushernote
  • Team Dad: The oldest and most rational of the team.
  • The Trickster: Shows shades of this during the Bara Printer incident.

Lieutenant Yuuji Mita/Oh Blue | Actor: Masashi Gōda

  • Distressed Dude: He ends up captured or tied up more often than any of the others.
  • Friend to All Children: The team in general shares this trait, but he in particular stands out for his more kiddish qualities. He relates to them more.
  • Kid-Appeal Character: Is the most prone to bumbling and gets along with kids.
  • The Lancer: Even moreso than Yokkaichi. His bumbling fool personality makes him a prefect foil to Goro.
  • Meaningful Name: His last name possess a kanji that means "three"
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Went into one after the death of Bara Revenger.
  • Signature Move: Inazuma Choriki Tonfanote
    Juri Nijou/Oh Yellow

Lieutenant Juri Nijou/Oh Yellow | Actress: Ayumi Asō

    Momo Maruo/Oh Pink

Lieutenant Momo Maruo/Oh Pink | Actress: Tamao Satō

    Riki/King Ranger

Riki/King Ranger | Actor: Shōji Yamaguchinote

  • Bling-Bling-BANG!: King Pyramider
  • Bling of War: His armor and entire arsenal. So much so that, despite being officially designated as a Black Ranger, most of his gear and aura are more gold than they are black. His suit is the only thing about him more black than gold, but even the gold parts dominate the suit. Little wonder his adaptation was renamed Gold.
  • Carry a Big Stick: King Stick
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Now that he is awakened in the present.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Riki considers himself a knight whose top mission is to protect Dorin.
  • Older Than They Look: Despite his young age, he is six hundred million years old (albeit most of them in suspended animation) and quite mature.
  • One Head Taller: He is much taller than Dorin.
  • Puppy Love: His feelings towards Dorin are a mature version of this trope.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He is in fact the oldest ranger in the series after he entered a suspended animation for over a millennium.
  • Signature Move: King Victory Flash
  • Sixth Ranger: First appears in Episode 26.
  • Super Prototype: To the Ohrangers. Justified, since his powers were created from ancient times.

Allies

    Naoyuki Miura

Chief Naoyuki Miura | Actor: Hiroshi Miyauchi

  • Authority Equals Asskicking: He is the leader of the United Air Force and can kick major ass if he needs to.
  • Crazy-Prepared: He occasionally comes up with contingency plans, so he can stay one step ahead of Baranoia.
  • My Greatest Failure: He actually has two of these moments.
    • One for not being able to save Endo, a fellow officer, and fearing his daughter Mitsuko hated him, prompting him to act on personal feelings when she gets targeted by a monster.
    • One for creating Red Puncher when he had just learned how to harvest and synthesize Choriki, but the resulting robot was untamable and caused the death of its pilot, Lt. Kirino, by burying itself under a rock avalanche. He then decided to leave Red Puncher in its grave, and was against using it in battle.

    Dorin

Dorin | Actress: Lisa Wada

  • A Dog Named "Dog": She's a member of the Dorin race named Dorin from the planet Dorin.
  • Disney Death: Was killed at the hands of Maltihua. She gets better in the finale.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Also like Riki, she's a girl from the past living in the present day.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Wild animals will rally themselves in her defense of their own accord.
  • Living MacGuffin: Contains the source of the Choriki powers, thus making her a central importance to the storyline.
  • Older Than They Look: Like Riki, chronologically she's older than her biological age by millions of years.

    Paku

Paku | Voice Actor: Etsuko Kozakura

    Gunmajin

Gunmajin | Voice Actor: Akira Kamiya

  • Benevolent Genie: He is a literal genie, means well, and never goes too far in morally questionable territory while granting wishes.
    • Also, he is upfront in saying he will not grant wishes he doesn't like, or wishes that aren't fun.
    • When told to "punish bullies", while he does scare them by putting them very high on a branch and blowing his giant breath at them, he does not go any further, so he clearly has a sense of what is disproportionate and what is a fitting punishment.
    • He will also grant righteous wishes like helping Ohranger to beat the bad guys, no questions asked.
  • Cool Sword: Majin Saber
  • Friend to All Children: Played straight.
    • He is very friendly, understanding and forgiving of any children, and will not question the wishes of innocent children.
    • Bulldont even tries to take advantage of this to manipulate him.
  • Instant Allegiance Artifact: Invoked with the key used to release him, but ultimately subverted.
    • Upon realizing he was being deceived by Bulldont all along, he stops acknowledging him as his master and states he deserves to be punished.
    • Also, in a surprising twist compared to usual genie tropes, he will refuse, PERIOD, to grant the explicit wish of Bomber the Great to take over the world, because he does not like the wish, claiming it is "not fun".
  • Literal Genie: In his debut episodes, he would not question the innocent wish of a child to ride on the OhBlocker, even going as far as fighting the heroes to commandeer said mech.
    • Though, to his credit, when Bulldont makes the same wish, he has the sense to be initially suspicious as Bulldont is a machine like Bomber the Great, who made the (rejected) wish to take over the Earth.
  • Our Genies Are Different: He checks most boxes from the Genie Tropes, but as seen above, only follows some of the rules, allowing him to refuse to grant wishes he doesn't like. However, he is bound by two rules:
    • He can not cancel a wish that has been accepted.
    • And he can't accept a new wish until the previous one has been fulfilled.
  • The Kid with the Remote Control: Clearly invoked, especially when small children hold the key and make wishes for him to grant, ending in battle.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He's terrified of the Youkai in the Ole Vs. Kakuranger movie.

Machine Empire Baranoia

    Emperor Bacchushund

Emperor Bacchushund | Voice Actor: Tōru Ōhira

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/king_mondo.jpg

The founding ruler of Baranoia, he is a survivor of an attempted Machine Beast revolt on the Pangaean civilization who escaped and established an empire on planet Baranoia.

  • A Nazi by Any Other Name: He preaches a Master Race philosophy that champions Machine Beasts as superior over humans, even having Machine Beasts that fail to meet his standards or defy him executed unless they are of use to him.
  • Back for the Dead: Twice.
    • First buried under rubble and magma when the Blocker robots destroyed his Super Machine Beast base before the appearance of a Space Metal Sword empowered him into a new giant form before his body is destroyed by Ohblocker.
    • His head ends up on another planet, giving Buldont his remaining power before shutting down for good.
  • Bad Boss: Killed the Bara Cactus siblings for showing more loyalty to each other than to him.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: He may have started the war against the Ohrangers, but ends up being destroyed before the last quarter of the series, with his son Buldont carrying on his legacy afterwards.
  • The Emperor: Of the entire Baranoia Empire.
  • Fantastic Racist: He constantly praises Baranoia's robots being superior to humans, weeding out any deviant robots he sees unfit to exist in his society.
  • Hypocrite: Demeans and mocks humanity for having the capacity to love and brags about himself and his machines having no such "weakness"... yet his own side proved throughout the series to have the same capacity that he failed to realize like the love he has for his family, the Bara Cactus Brothers' bond and Bara Revenger's friendship with the Ohrangers.
  • Losing Your Head: After being defeated by the Ohranger, his head was all that remained and was hurled deep into space and ended up on a distant planet.
  • Meaningful Name: A combination of Bacchus (Roman god of wine) and Dachshund (a breed of dogs).
  • Older Than They Look: Despite his appearance, he was built about six hundred million years ago.

    Empress Hysterrier

Empress Hysterrier | Voice Actress: Minori Matsushima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zeo_queenmachina.jpg

  • Alas, Poor Villain: It's not hard to feel sympathy for her after she commits suicide just after becoming a grandmother.
  • Character Development: From a heartless machine to a kind-hearted grandmother in the end before she died.
  • Clipped-Wing Angel: Dowager Empress Hysterrier. Using most of her energy to summon Maltihua causes Hysterrier to age, with whitened plating and forced to use Bacchushund's staff as a walking stick.
  • Driven to Suicide: She chose to die as a "thank you" for the Ohrangers sparing her grandson.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She truly cares for her entire family.
  • Heel Realization: Seeing Bulldont and Maltihua use a human baby as hostage while holding her own infant grandson made her realize both children are equally important living beings.
  • The High Queen: For Baranoia.
  • Meaningful Name: Combination of "hysteria" and "terrier".
  • Scary Teeth: Her teeth are metal and resemble gears.

    Prince/Kaiser Bulldont

Prince Bulldont | Voice Actor: Tomokazu Seki

Click here to see him as Kaiser Buldont

  • Avenging the Villain: Part of his motivation that led him to become an effective ruler was to make the Ohrangers pay for killing his father Bacchushund.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: One of the few villains in Super Sentai history to actually conquer Earth and rule it for a while before his ultimate defeat.
  • Came Back Strong: After his body is destroyed in a duel with Bomber the Great, leaving only his dismembered head, he is revived into a more powerful form as Kaiser Bulldont after Bacchushund transferred his energy to him.
  • Dragon Ascendant: After the passing of his father.
  • The Emperor: Third ruler of the Baranoia Empire.
  • Eviler than Thou: After his transformation into Kaiser Bulldont, he shows he's more wicked and evil than Bomber the Great when he brainwashes him to fight Ohranger, but allows him some independent thought so he'll know the suffering he's experiencing.
  • Expy: A robot version of Toran, being a child who assumes an adult form in the episodes leading up to the series finale.
  • Hypocrite: Demeans and mocks humanity for having the capacity to love and brags about him and his machines having no such "weakness"... yet his own side proved throughout the series to have the same capacity (such as Bacchushund's and Hysterrier's love for each other and their family, the Cactus Brothers' bond and Bara Revenger's friendship with the Ohrangers), something he doesn't seem to realize but his mother does. Even his combo attack with his wife is powered by their love, making his oblivious hypocrisy blatant.
  • Kid-Appeal Character: Despite being evil, he's pretty cute as Prince Bulldont... then his father died.
  • Kissing Cousins: With Maltihua his cousin, though it's downplayed as neither are truly cousins in the traditional sense as both are machines made by Bacchushund.
  • Knight of Cerebus: The series got a lot darker after his upgrade.
  • Meaningful Name: Combination of "bulldog" and "Pluton".
  • Off with His Head!: After Bomber defeats him in a duel.
  • Overlord Jr.: Spends just as much time bossing others around as his parents.
  • Plot-Relevant Age-Up: Upgrades himself upon his father being defeated by the Ohrangers.
  • Superior Successor: He outdoes his father, Bacchushund, in managing to take over Earth and even defeats the Ohranger almost for good. The only reasons he lost being the heroes' determination and a Deus ex Machina that restored their powers.
  • Together in Death: With Maltihua, both of them exploding together.
  • Took a Level in Badass When the upgrade is complete, he is naturally stronger from gaining an adult-like body and his father's remaining energies.
  • True Final Boss: Along with Maltihua, he's the last threat that the Ohrangers encounter.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: He and Maltihua wasted no time in turning the Earth into their own personal fiefdom after taking it over, ruling Japan as a clockwork dictator.
  • Walking Spoiler: His particular Character Development caused a lot of changes for the show's tone.

    Princess/Empress Maltihua

Princess Maltihua | Voice Actress: Miho Yamada

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1aa8b80c03cf81c9d4a55ac853ee186f_5.jpg

    Bomber the Great

Bomber the Great | Voice Actor: Nobuyuki Hiyama

  • Artificial Limbs: Granted, his limbs were already mechanical, but after Bulldont sliced off his right hand and Maltihua shot off his left, they replaced them with a sword and bomb-shaped blaster.
  • Bad Boss: To Acha and Kocha whenever he needs to take out his frustrations on them.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Sought to take over Baranoia as the new emperor, but his reign is short lived when Buldont has Maltihua turn him into their slave.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: He kept Buldont and Hysterrier alive because he wanted to use a ruling in Baranoia's sucession to remove them once the time is right.
  • Defeat Equals Explosion: A rare aversion, since his body still had one more function to perform.
  • The Emperor: Second ruler the Baranoia Empire, though his reign was short-lived
  • Fate Worse than Death: Reprogrammed into a mindless berserker by Bulldont and Maltihua. The catch is that they made sure he would periodically regain his senses just long enough to realize what he's been reduced to before reverting again to his primal state. Even the Ohrangers are horrified and take pity on Bomber, and ultimately deliver a Mercy Kill.
  • Foil: To Bara Nightmare. Both are Machine Beasts who deserted Baranoia after defying Bacchushund, acting on their own agenda since. But while Bara Nightmare is a Faux Affably Evil creep who kept his distance from Baranoia while kidnapping elementary school girls, Bomber is a Affably Evil charmer who wins over most of his fellow Baranoians when he returns following Bacchushund's death.
  • Hypocrite: The same robot that forced a child prince, Bulldont, into a duel to the death to usurp the throne without any form of mercy later on begs to be spared from said resurrected prince's very justified wrath, predictably Bulldont just makes his comeuppance even crueler to make a point.
  • Karmic Death: He was brainwashed by Maltihua with Buldont sending him a kamikaze mission as punishment for uspring him and his mother.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Not to the extent of Kaiser Bulldont, but his plans are far more dangerous and more well thought-out than that of Bucchushund's.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: He forces Bulldont into a duel to kill him so he can take over Baranoia and acts as cruel as possible before blowing the child prince to bits leaving him as only a head. When Bulldont returns as Kaiser Bulldont he first humiliates and mauls Bomber by slashing him and then cutting off an arm before letting Multiwa cut off the other, then controls him to fight for his cause while leaving him conscious enough to know he's being stripped of his free will but is helpless against it.
  • Matryoshka Object: His body is revealed to be a casing for the Great Missile, a weapon of mass destruction resembling his missile form with enough explosive power to destroy a sun.
  • Mercy Kill: In the end, the Ohranger end up doing this to him to stop the suffering Bulldont and Maltihua were putting him through.
  • Mythology Gag: His characterization and role in the story is based heavily on Inazuma Ginga, right down to being reduced to a mindless Monster of the Week by the faction he usurped (though, unlike Inazuma, Bomber actually made an attempt to resist his control).
  • Odd Name Out: The only member of Baranoia (alongside Acha and Kocha) not to be named after a dog breed, possibly to set him apart from the royal family.
  • The Rival: He is this to Gunmajin.
  • Shaped Like Itself: He's a bomb and considers himself great.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Despite his careless attitude and personality, he's surprisingly intelligent as he sees through his enemies' plots against him.
  • The Starscream: Plans to take control of Baranoia for himself. He succeeds for a few episodes until Bulldont's revival.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: He turns into this to either Hysterrier, Bulldont, or Acha and Kocha whenever he has a great plan in mind or whenever his plans fail.
  • Villainous Breakdown: First when surrounded by the Ohrangers, Kingranger, and Gunmajin after his Bara Gold plan fails, then when under Buldont and Maltiwa's spell whenever he breifly regains consciousness.
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: While he tells Hysterrier that he would not kill her after killing Buldont, he still ties her and her son's head to a rocket that takes them out of the solar system.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He forces Bulldont to a Duel to the Death and takes glee in beating him easily in order to become the emperor of Baranoia. This would later come back to bite him later on as his killing of Bulldont allowed the last of Bacchusund's energies to upgrade him into his adult form and his cruelty towards Bulldont leads to him suffering a nasty karmic fate upon the prince's return..

    Machine Beast Tamer Keris

Machine Beast Tamer Keris | Actor: Akiko Kurusu

    Butlers Acha and Kocha

Butlers Acha and Kocha | Voice Actors: Kaneta Kimotsuki (Acha) and Shinobu Adachi (Kocha)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/prz_klank_orbus.jpg

  • Big Guy, Little Guy: Acha is a human-sized, Kocha is about the size of a cat.
  • Bumbling Henchmen Duo: They're kind of like evil versions of R2-D2 and C-3PO as far as their attitudes towards each other are concerned.
  • Catchphrase: Kocha tends to say, "Grow big and strong!" when enlarging a Machine Beast.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: When Bomber the Great took power, they became his toadies before briefly joining Buldont when he gets Ganmajin and then good after he became Kaizer Buldont. Hysterrier and Buldont when lampshade the duo's antics on the subject with the latter more forgiving.
  • Funny Robot:
  • Heel–Face Turn: At the end of the series, when they are the only remaining members of Baranoia left, they end up turning good and leave with Gunmajin to help raise Bulldont Jr.
  • Make My Monster Grow: Acha throws Kocha onto a monster to help the latter grow to massive proportions.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: Acha and Kocha don't care who runs Baranoia so long as they remain loyal to their posts.
  • Odd Name Out: The only members of Baranoia (alongside Bomber the Great) not to be named after a dog breed, possibly to set them apart from the royal family.
  • The Quisling: They cozy up to Bomber the Great fairly quickly and even aid him in overthrowing the legitimate rulers of Baranoia.
  • Those Two Guys: They're always together.
  • Welcome Back, Traitor: Despite the prince's cruelty, Kaiser Bulldont is perfectly willing to let these two work for him after they sided with Bomber the Great when he takes over.
  • No-Respect Guy: Both of them are rarely given their dues. More so with Acha as his resume includes chased by a love-sick Bara Printer and an obsessed Kento Henna.
  • The Scapegoat: Whenever an evil plan was foiled, Bomber the Great takes it out on Acha and Kocha.

Other

    Sei'ichi Kuroda

Sei'ichi Kuroda

The guest antagonist of episodes 17 and 18, a human scientist who attempts to align himself with Baranoia.

  • Corrupted Character Copy: A darker take on Dr. Tenma from Astro Boy, both being driven mad by the death of a son and creating a robotic replacement. By while Tenma is a sympathetic Anti-Villain who sent away Astro upon realizing that he could never truly replace his so Tobio, Kuroda is a Misanthrope Supreme willing to align himself with Baranoia for his warped ideals and has no qualms over Shigeru being a replacement for his son.
  • Horrifying the Horror: He outright scares Bacchushund, a robot supremacist, with a speech of hating his own people.
  • Madden Into Misanthropy: Lost his son to a car crash and later his wife, growing to hate humans for being frail.
  • Power Of Hate: The core of his ideals.

    Prince Bulldont Jr.

Prince Bulldont Jr.

  • Children Are Innocent: The motivation for keeping him alive; he has the potential to be good despite being born from evil parents.
  • Dead Guy Junior: Subverted. He was named before his parents' demise.
  • Happily Adopted: Ends up on being raised by Gunmajin, Acha and Kocha.
