Sandbox / Hypocrite Wick Check

Go To

Hypocrite has long drawn concerns about scope (broadness, list of subtropes) and usage (nitpicking characters' actions, bashing). This wick check aims to sample how it is used across the wiki.

Short-Term Project

Wicks checked: 80/120 (Most are still unsorted)

Wicks checked:

    open/close all folders

    Acknowledged in-universe
  1. Literature. All The Bright Places: The entire school body attends Finch's funeral, and the students create a shrine for him at his locker despite most of them having bullied or ignored him while he was alive. Violet lampshades it, and Brenda is outright disgusted.
  2. Characters.Murderers Row: She calls out Church on killing Miller in self-defense, but as he points out, it's not that different from how she allowed Donut's leg to be broken.
  3. Recap.Total Drama Planes Trains And Hot Air Mobiles: During the song, Heather points that, for all of Alejandro's anger about her trying to vote him off, he would've done the same to her if given the opportunity.
  4. Characters.Grand Blue: Iori and Kohei are pretty annoyed that he says he finds forcing coworkers to drink as unacceptable when he not only forced Iori and Kohei into Peek-A-Boo but also forced them to keep up with the club's insane drinking culture.
  5. Characters.Black Lagoon Lagoon Delivery Company: At heart he always has good intentions, but he has these tendencies. Balalaika points out to him during the Fujiyama Gangster arc that though he preaches "justice" and non-violence, he seems perfectly willing to massacre one clan as long as he protects the other and doesn't dirty his own hands. Later, he manipulates people and bets their lives on chance in the "El Baile de la Muerte" Arc, yet still complains of how bad the rest of Roanapur is.
  6. Fanfic.Shatterheart: Hypocrisy Nod: Fai acknowledges that he is a massive Hypocrite when he tries to force Syaoran to tell Sakura the truth about his relationship with Kurogane when Fai himself has being lying to all of them the whole time.
  7. Recap. The Mighty Ducks Game Changers S 1 E 8 Change On The Fly: Alex's interview on TV where she talks about how she started the Don't Bothers and that their success is due to their focus on fun is undercut by the fact she's started pushing the kids into training more like the Ducks. Lauren acknowledges it quite nicely as the kids watch the interview.
  8. Characters.Gravity Rush: To a humorous degree in the anime short. When Kat and Raven head over to Neu Hiraleon, Raven says she'd rather be fighting over eating junk food any day, prompting Kat to point out she had just eaten a plate of pretzels and a bag of chips just a few minutes earlier. Let alone her love of ice cream and cookies. Raven can't really argue her point and tries to change the subject instead.
  9. Buffyverse: Angel:
    • When Angel visits Sunnydale to protect Buffy, he keeps his a presence a secret from everyone but her, able to see her but she can't see him. This hypocrisy is called out by Giles and later Buffy herself, although Angel justifies it in both cases as "protecting her."
    • Angel tries to kill Wesley and alienates him from the team for being responsible for Connor in Quor'toth and raised by Holtz even though it was a "mistake for the greater good" ... Something Angel continually does himself, which he does eventually acknowledge.
  10. Tsuki ga Kirei: What the Hell, Hero?: Providing the main conflict for the finale, Akane admonishes Kotaro for neglecting to tell her that Chinatsu had finally confessed to him, which is especially glaring considering that Chinatsu herself didn't hesitate to tell her almost as soon as it happened. Akane is particularly mad at Kotaro because he himself had previously given her a hard time when Hira confessed to her. Akane breaks down crying at the possibility that her long-distance relationship with Kotaro might not work with such important aspects being overlooked.
  11. Funny.Call Of The Night: During another night, Yamori has trouble finding Nazuna. When they finally meet, she explains that she was looking for some rando to suck blood from. Yamori calls her a "slutty she-devil", outraged that she's feeding on other people. Nazuna defends herself by comparing feeding on different people to eating rice and bread, but then Yamori throws her own words back at her when he reminds her that she said feeding was the same as copulating.
  12. Characters.Destiny The Guardians: Grumpy Old Man: Periodically complains about how everyone else is doing things these days throughout the second game. Which is rich coming from a person who did nothing during the Red War; Crow even aggressively presses him on the matter, and he suddenly shies away.
  13. Characters. The Witcher 2019 The Northern Kingdoms: Called out by Geralt, when she tries to make Geralt leave with someone else's daughter to keep her own granddaughter away from him.
  14. Fanfic.Switch: Kirk accuses McCoy of this with regards to him spending his summer curing a deadly disease when he had chewed Kirk out for spending his summer doing a deadly Starfleet course.
  15. Hypocrisy Nod:
    • In Tsubasa -RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE- fanfic Shatterheart, Fai calls Syaoran out for keeping his relationship with Kurogane a secret and gives him an ultimatum to make him tell the truth to Sakura. Fai realizes that he's being a massive Hypocrite since he lied to everyone the whole time.
    • In My Huntsman Academia, Toshinori acknowledges that he was being a Hypocrite when he told Izuku that he couldn't become a Huntsman. He had the power to give a Broken Soul who shared his ideals the chance to make his dreams a reality, but Toshinori didn't want to let go of One For All's power, justifying it to himself by saying that he could save more people that way. He's especially hard on himself for this because he was in Izuku's shoes once as a Moon Child himself.
  16. Characters.Steins Gate Zero: She calls Moeka out on her tendency to compare herself to others and feel like anyone is superior to her. Maho stops herself when she realizes she has no right to say that when she has always compared herself to Kurisu.
  17. Recap. The Flash 2014 S 3 E 15 The Wrath Of Savitar: Barry accuses Wally of keeping secrets in regards to Savitar, while doing the same with his engagement to Iris. Wally calls him out on it.
  18. Characters.Pokemon The Series Misty: She lambasted Ash regularly for his poor training, despite Togepi and Psyduck being just as poor under her handling, relying on dumb luck with either of them using their abilities effectively (this is slightly justified in Ash wanting to become a Pokémon Master, which requires a lot more work and skill than Misty being a Water Type specialist). She is equally bad at taking her level of criticism back, the first time Ash called her out on this in the latter's case, she threatened him quiet in frustration. Similar to Ash, this trait mostly toned down as episodes passed, even if she retained a lot more of a similar cockiness than she'd like to admit.

     Natter/Conversation
  1. Recap.Jackie Chan Adventures S 2 E 25 The New Atlantis: Valmont makes light of Tohru holding a grudge over last season, saying Jackie has him doing the exact same thing: fighting a demon. Though to be fair Chan isn't making Tohru face her alone, something Valmont has overlooked.
  2. Characters.Destiny The Guardians: The Drifter considers her one, saying that she's just as violent and destructive as she claims he and his followers are. However, this point rings hollow in light of the fact that 1) Aunor has never permanently killed another Guardian at any point, unlike the Drifter and his associates (such as Malphur), and 2) he actively twists the truth about Aunor's rescue attempt of her Ghost, tricking many Guardians (including this wiki) into believing she "blew up a city block" for no reason.

     Complaining
  1. Characters.Injustice The Insurgency Justice League:
    • Most of his motivation is going against Superman is that he feels that Superman has no right to force his will on people. Forcing his will on those close to him could very well form almost the entirety of Batman's personality in this universe.
    • He disowned Damian for accidentally killing Dick, even though he was clearly remorseful for it and says he can't forgive him for the people he's killed, even though Damian didn't rack up much of a body count. Yet among his supporters, he has Harley Quinn, a former sidekick of the Joker who was party to the nuking of an entire city and the murder-by-proxy of a pregnant woman, and he seems to have forgiven her just fine, to the extent of making her his confidante and offering to make her his sidekick. And despite drawing a line at killing, he doesn't seem to have much problem with heroes that do kill like Sub-Zero and Raiden (A Lin Kuei warrior and a deity respectively, that make no bones about ending their opponents' lives) or Hellboy (whose job is to hunt demons and monsters, but also fought and killed Nazis during his career), as all three join the League in their respective endings in one way or another.
    • There's also the fact that he has no problem inflicting to others what’s no better than that. This includes traumatic brain injuries and chucking them at the Phantom Zone, which is a Fate Worse than Death.
    • Later, when he first meets Supergirl, he looks annoyed that he never found out Superman has a cousin. As Damian points out, Batman is all about keeping secrets.
    • Batman was initially unwilling to accept Hal Jordan's reform, but was more than willing to trust Harley Quinn. It cannot be forgotten that Harley Quinn followed Joker for years and aided him in destroying Metropolis by tricking Superman into killing a pregnant Lois Lane. She has a lot of blood on her hands, probably even just as much or even more than Hal Jordan, yet Batman was willing to accept her reform.
    • His conviction to his Thou Shalt Not Kill rule is justifiable, but apparently it's only personally killing people that he objects to; letting super-villains who gladly kill people For the Evulz go after you catch them is, apparently, an acceptable act.
Batman: You killed a man, Clark.
Superman: I did! And every time you let that madman live, how many more did you condemn?
    • He expects the Insurgency to blindly follow his every word, yet refuses to trust them in return, even with his secret identity, which is noted by Huntress. He even deliberately withholds information from them, having not told them that their plan to target Hawkgirl was a ploy to plant Martian Manhunter among the ranks of Superman's followers.
  2. Buffyverse: Angel:
    • He breaks up with Buffy because he wants her to be with a normal guy, but then the minute she is with one (aka Riley), behaves resentfully and practically provokes his fight with Riley by insinuating he "lost his soul again" (translation: "slept with Buffy") and then acts like he's entirely blameless.
    • Preaches about redemption and is mostly consistent but dismisses the idea Lindsey could change when he comes to him for help.
    • He constantly makes decisions that affect others without consulting them first, such as his break-up with Buffy, wiping everyone's memories of Connor, rewinding his one human day with Buffy that only he remembers, and his choice to become Twilight and the Twilight prophecy, which involved Buffy in a deep and intimate way.
    • Angel gets jealous and pissy with Buffy over Spike, even though at this point in the series he had also fallen for Cordelia and even had a kid with Darla he may or may not have told her about...
  • Characters.Sword Art Online Dark Territory: She is shocked that another human would attack her to save an Orc, even with the Fantastic Racism aside, this is pretty rich considering she just subjected said human to agonizing pain via Life Drain, so even with Rirupirin completely out of the equation it's still laughable she couldn't understand her victim coming back for revenge.

     ZCE
  1. Characters.Everybody Loves Large Chests: Pretty much started the war between the human Empire and elven Republic by allowing a lie of omission to spread like wildfire, giving the Empire an casus belli against the Republic that was anything but justice. Doesn't explain what's hypocritical.
  2. Characters.Kono Suba Supporting Characters: While he is not totally wrong about some of Kazuma's behaviours, he is not better on most aspects. He only propose to girls to join his party to feed his ego, wants to use a magic swords that can kill demons and dragons on Kazuma that is less experienced but still call him a cheater. We can add that he only survives in this world thanks to his Game-Breaker sword AND the fact that he knows much about Isekai's hero tropes. Doesn't explain what Kazuma's being called out for, except for cheating.
  3. Characters. The Forsaken Children: Earnset is quick to point out his faults when he decided to surrender the Necronomicon to the Forsaken Children, even though he is more than happy to uphold the less savory aspects of their family heritage. Not sure what this is trying to say? Doesn't explain what's hypocritical.
  4. WebVideo.Lutheran Satire:
    • Several of the speakers in "I'm a Christian but I'm Totally Not": Only a quote.
"I don't unquestioningly believe something just because my pastor tells me it's true. I unquestioningly believe something because my gender studies professor tells me it's true."
    • Horus attempts to invoke this. Like all his attempts, it's a No-Sell. Doesn't explain what's hypocritical.
  5. Literature. The Great Yacht Race: Mama Bear: Mother Laidlaw is this for her sons. Simply put: do not mention any hint of their family having African ancestry even if it's true. Doesn't explain what's hypocritical.
  6. YMMV.Marvels Spider Man: Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Max Modell and Harry Osborn get frequently cited for this, the former due to being a hypocritical Designated Hero who doesn't suffer enough for his harmful actions and the latter due to coming off as an unnecessarily Wangsty Jerkass too often. Both of them do receive Character Development on these fronts, though. ZCE Pothole.
  7. Recap.Glee S 6 E 01 Loser Like Me: Although Rachel extols the virtues of all the Arts, she really only means the glee club. Also, Sue, to act like Rachel wasn't completely justified to tell her off in "Opening Night". Should really be two different entries, but the second sentence is a ZCE.
  8. YMMV.Spies In Disguise Evil Is Sexy: Killian has already gotten himself a number of fangirls due to his looks, his voice, and his sympathetic (to an extent) backstory. ZCE Pothole.
  9. YMMV.Tower Of God: The Scrappy: Lo Po Bia Yasratcha is starting to be considered this, by facto of having been quite the Yandere, and an ineffectual one at that. Numerous fans who initially liked him started to hold him in disdain for his selfishness, which got even worse after he massacred the Canines despite the fact he could have let them leave as Wangwang intended. And while Traumerei is far from being a nice guy, Yasratcha's Hypocrite and Never My Fault attitude means fans tend to prefer Traumerei, who doesn't lie, is honest about being superior, and displays more honor and mercy, in addition to being quite cool. ZCE Pothole.
  10. Characters.Thomas Abridged: He says railways should be ripped up and then takes a shortcut via the railway. It is even lampshaded by the narrator Doesn't explain what's hypocritical.
Narrator: He [Bulgy] didn't know the meaning of the word 'Hypocrisy'. Or how to spell it.
  11. Kinslaying Is a Special Kind of Evil: God of War: Kratos earned the title Ghost of Sparta after accidentally killing his first family during a berserker rage, something arranged by Ares; the oracle of the village where it happened proceeded to use a spell to fuse their ashes to Kratos' skin, ensuring the mark of his "terrible deed" would be known to all. Kratos himself was so horrified that he instantly renounced his servitude to Ares. In III, Cronos spitefully calls him "a coward who kills his own kin," though he has little room to talk. ZCE Pothole.
  12. Characters.Oz Aryans: Butt-Monkey: Combining their Hypocrite and Drugs Are Bad status with their leader's obsession with revenge on Beecher over group goals means that the Aryans rarely become major players. They suffer heavy amounts of both friendly and unfriendly fire and given that both their victims and enemies are either white, hate them or both, they are regularly sidelined by the other gangs with ease. ZCE Pothole.
  13. Film.Blackbeards Ghost: Blackbeard's reaction upon discovering the electric gaff under the roulette table is to call them cheats. Doesn't explain what's hypocritical.

    Other/Unsorted

  1. Characters.Brave Frontier Units Part 4: All of the friendship talks and encouragements she spouted towards Lodin, Tiara, and Zelban? All for Nothing as she left the three behind, called them "beyond saving", and abandoned them to go towards the Gate that could bring her to somewhere that could rebuild Duel-GX
  2. Characters. The Expanse TV Protogen Corporation: He'll tearfully lament his daughter's death one moment, and then immediately push forward with the plan that turned her into collateral damage in the first place.
  3. Characters. The Genius Princes Guide To Raising A Nation Out Of Debt Hey How About Treason: He calls the Natrans "opportunist scum," even though his country is acting opportunistically by attempting an invasion of Natra while the Earthworld Empire is in turmoil.
  4. Characters.Another Eden Antagonists: They want to wipe away human history... But don't mind keeping powerful artifacts in order to bolster their abilities.
  5. Characters. My Brave Pony Starfleet Magic Space Ponies: Lightning Dawn calls Specter a coward for attacking him while he is a child. However, as shown with their encounter with Raven, Starfleet fights only when they are sure they can win.
  6. StrawmanHasAPoint.Webcomics: Better Days: In one early story arc, one of Fisk's elementary school teachers, Ms. Bedbutter, is appalled at the content of Fisk's essays and the sarcasm he laces them with, and calls his mother Sheila over to discuss the issue. Sheila thinks her son just has an open mind and refuses to succumb to teacher indoctrination. While Ms. Bedbutter is a Politically Motivated Teacher who thinks Fisk simply disagreeing with her is enough to condemn him, and Fisk does raise some valid points (such as promoting a more positive view of America and criticizing Georgians who support Jimmy Carter just because he's from Georgia), that's not to say her complaints don't hold any water. For example, Fisk uses some very inappropriate language in his essays (referring to a boy he knows as "retarded"). More worryingly, he makes some factually incorrect and sometimes outright bigoted statements about Native Americans in order to justify colonization of the Americas. To be sure, Ms. Bedbutter is certainly no saint herself and is guilty of some of the same things she attacks Fisk for (she responds to Sheila's criticisms by passive-aggressively Slut-Shaming her), but it's not hard to say that regardless of her own shortcomings, she does have legitimate complaints about the boy.
  7. Characters.Ellipsis Samvara And His Minions: He calls God out for being a vainglorious tyrant that enjoys the suffering of his creations, but ultimately everything he venomously accuses God of, he himself is guilty of in spades. In the cosmic order of things, Samvara is meant to be a fair judge that acts without bias so he can properly guide souls to their deserving eternal rest. Instead he abuses his godlike powers and position to act like a spoiled brat, playing games with the destinies of countless others while touting himself up like a proper savior.
  8. VideoGame.Tomb Raider 2013: During the fight on the gondolas late in the game, one mook mans a machine gun turret and starts blowing up the entire platform Lara and several Solarii soldiers are fighting on. As he does, he swears to make Lara pay for killing his brothers, even though him destroying the platform leads to several more of his fellow soldiers' deaths, and he gleefully ignores their pleas to stop firing because he's killing them too.
  9. MassEffectAndromeda.Tropes A To G:
    • In a recording, the Archon dismisses the asari calling melding "embracing eternity" as "poetry". This is one of the kett speaking, who refer to violently turning members of other species into their own in religious terms.
    • Many angara will make excuses for their species' criminals even while they're asking Ryder for help dealing with them, but will fly completely off the handle in response to criminal behavior from members of the Milky Way species and judge the entire Andromeda Initiative over it.
    • The Roekaar's criticisms of the kett, as bad as the kett are, become increasingly hollow as we learn more about them. One Roekaar scolds Ryder for killing all his associates... who'd just tried to kill Ryder and their teammates without any provocation.
  10. Anime.Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny: Just as in the first series, Blue Cosmos and the Earth Alliance. Against the manipulation of human DNA to create Coordinators, but more than willing to using methods such as drugs to enhance the abilities of regular humans, turning them into living weapons.
  11. Characters.Word Girl: Ms. Question flunks the Coach's Villain School because she doesn't have superpowers, despite the Coach not having any of his own either.
  12. Characters.Dexter Main Characters: He is extremely offended that Dexter refers to him as a Dirty Cop despite the fact that he takes money from a crime scene and was actually attempting to bribe Dexter into keeping silent about it with expensive football tickets prior to this conversation.
  13. Literature.Tease: Sara's fellow classmates that either participated in or implicitly supported the harassment of Emma. After the latter kills herself, they turn her former locker into a shrine and openly condemn Sara for her actions. This likely goes hand in hand with Toxic Friend Influence, since Alpha Bitch Brielle, the girl with whom most of her classmates want to ingratiate themselves, is the instigator of most of Emma's torment. However, once Brielle leaves Elmwood for home tutoring, her hold over her classmates vanishes.
  14. Characters.Meet The Feebles: He dumps Heidi for her weight, despite being rather heavy himself.
  15. Characters.Trustfell Round One: Mordecai trusts no one, which would make him Properly Paranoid in a place like this, but expects them all to trust him. For example, if he sees someone get a weapon out of the prize machine, he'll freak out that something terrible will obviously happen, demand that they give it to him where it'll be safe because obviously he won't use it and they still might, and get upset and offended when they say no.
  16. Music.Hikaru Utada: The third chorus of "About Me" has Utada calling their partner out for keeping secrets from them, with the line "You say you're sure that you love me, how could that be when you keep so much from me?" However the entire song up to this point has been about how they haven't been honest with them.
  17. Funny.Diaries Of A Madman After the first tournament, Celestia states that Navarone's effortless win was hideous and entirely out of the spirit of the tournament, which is obviously false. What makes this hilarious is that she's clearly used these tactics before, many a time: what she takes exception to is the fact that Navarone used them in a blatantly obvious way, thus showing off what she's been doing this whole time.
Celestia: What you did was nothing short of brilliant, and yet at the same time so darkly underhanded that I feel dirty congratulating you for it.
  18. Characters.Little Princess: A poster in her office says, "Beware of spots" but she has freckles all over her body.
  19. CruelMercy.Fan Works: In The Prayer Warriors, during The Evil Gods, Part 2, after Jason kills the Roman god Socrates, Thalia comes to him with one of Socrates' captured followers. The follower begs Jason to kill her, but he tells her he will not, because murder is a sin, and says she will become his slave and has Thalia take her away to be punished. This may also apply to a Communist Mook in Threat of Satanic Commonism, whom Jerry spares after cutting off his arms and legs and blinding him so that he can suffer from his wounds and have the possibility of converting and going to Heaven.
  20. VillainousBreakdown.Webcomics: Survivor: Fan Characters: Desmond in Season 14 was smugly calm and self-assured of his eventual victory for the entire season, until Liz and Jojo made it clear to him that neither of them planned to take him to the finals and that they had pulled a Twin Switch on him that he had been completely blind to. Cue him breaking down into a screaming tirade about how Liz played without moral principles, despite him having played in much dirtier fashion himself.
  21. NightmareFuel.Star Trek Deep Space Nine: A more unnerving aspect relates to an unpleasant parallel that can be drawn to a character in a previous episode. A Bajoran politician had come to Deep Space 9 to petition for the right to return to Bajor, due to having been exiled for collaborating with the Cardassians during the occupation, signing lists of names of Bajorans who would be worked to death in the mines. Despite knowing of the suffering that the occupiers were inflicting on others and that many were fighting to oppose it, he never spoke a word in protest, and even Gul Dukat called him "His favorite Bajoran" because he always did as he was told. Now the entire Bajoran race was doing something similar, capitulating to a conqueror to protect themselves, while others suffer and die for the sake of their eventual liberation, and now Kira herself was playing the role of Dukat's "Favorite Bajoran". And yet, when the Dominion came, the Bajoran people did the same thing, knowingly trading their own safety for the blood of others. And worst of all, Kira being Dukat's "Favorite Bajoran, albeit for very different reasons.
  22. Characters.Beyblade Metal Fusion Main Characters: Gives nicknames to almost all of his friends, but hates being called nicknames himself.
  23. ComicBook.Iron Man 2020 Ongoing: Korvac tries to convince The Golden Age Human Torch to join his cause by accusing Tony Stark of manipulating him for Stark’s own ends in the past which the Torch doesn’t really dispute but when the Torch rejects Korvac for his previous crimes, Korvac resolves to just brainwash him for his own ends.
  24. ShipperOnDeck.Anime And Manga: Devil Princess of Jurai, Seto Kamiki is the official matchmaker of the Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Oh-Ki timeline. Marrying off her numerous friends and relatives (usually to more than one person, despite the fact that there's zero chance that she'd let her husband have multiple wives) seems to be her main passion, which take almost all her free time — that is, when she isn't manipulating her son-in-law, or chasing pirates back and forth.
  25. Characters.Suspiria 2018: She chastises Klemperer for "not believing women" and labeling them as "delusional when they tell the truth". However, Huller seems to have no problem taking part in the brutal torture and murder of many of the women in the dance academy.
  26. ComicBook.Mighty Avengers: Citri Noll, the Skrull that abducts Hank Pym, lambasts him as arrogant for believing the Skrulls will lose their next invasion attempt. This despite the Skrulls being arrogant enough to think that this time they'll definitely conquer Earth. Which they don't.
  27. Characters. One Piece Donquixote Pirates: Despite the Donquixote creed of strong familial bonds and loyalty, he and Diamante roar into laughter and mild insults at Senor Pink's decision to start dressing like a toddler.
  28. Film. The Edge Of Seventeen: Crosses over with Brick Joke. Nadine rants that her fellow schoolmates would lose their minds if someone took away their phone. When Nadine steals her mother’s car and her mother threatens to take her phone, Nadine loses her mind.
  29. Characters.Penguindrum: Kenzan and Chiemi railed and fought against an uncaring, unloving world. However, they destroyed their family and abandoned their children to a life of neglect and suffering. Even before that, they were so involved in their cause that they neglected their only child - a throwaway line implies they didn't notice that Shouma had been locked up and nearly starved to death.
  30. Characters.Twenty Four Sentox: Like his co-conspirators, he justifies his actions as power politics and in the best interest of the country. Given the Sentox conspirators were trying to access oil in Central Asia, it's clear to Jack it was about his greed for power.
  31. Recap.Cold Case S 4 E 13 Blackout: Lauren accuses her ex-husband Stan of being a pedophile for dating a younger woman—when she was the one who molested her son and tried to do the same thing to her grandson. Lauren also mocks Stan's new partner for being from the poor part of town, when she herself wasn't exactly born into wealth.
  32. Menacing Museum: BioShock: The third locale visited in BioShock 2 is Ryan Amusements, a cross between a museum and an Amusement Park of Doom: the museum aspect appears in the entrance hall's monuments to Rapture's creation, painting the city's construction in near-mythical terms; beyond, the "Journey To The Surface" ride serves as a ghost train through anti-Surface propaganda, brainwashing younger audiences into accepting the increasingly terrible conditions in Rapture through fear of the horrors that would befall them on the dreaded Surface (most of which existed in Rapture sooner or later). For good measure, the place is infested with Splicers by the time you show up.
  33. Literature. My Next Life As A Villainess All Routes Lead To Doom: It's implied that some of the students falsely accusing Catarina of bullying Maria were, in fact, the ones doing the actual bullying, since they become frightened when Maria offers to name the actual perpetrators. Unusually, the hypocrisy turns out to not be a case of dishonesty, double standards or lack of self-awareness, but because the accusers had been mind controlled through dark magic. Does this count as in-universe?
  34. Characters.True Potential Konohagakure: Yoshino often chews out her husband for his drinking, but still is a massive Hero-Worshipper of Tsunade, who is just as bad.
  35. Film. Before Sunrise: Despite both characters being cheaters themselves, they both angrily accuse of the other of cheating.
  36. Characters.Hells Kitchen Amateurs Season 1: The night of his elimination, Korekiyo would claim that he was mature and a team player, and saying that Charles wasn't. This is despite the fact that Korekiyo was a very odd individual who focused more on himself than anyone else.
  37. Characters.Infinity Train Seeker Of Crocus Sara Diktaylis: Sara uses peer pressure and bullying tactics to destroy Chloe. When she gets a taste of her own medicine and everyone mocks her, she can't take it.
  38. Characters.Total Drama Revolution: He constantly contradicts the "advice" he spews out to others.
  39. MoralEventHorizon.Dragon Ball: Officer Black jumps the line himself after he decides to destroy the entire Red Ribbon Army base just to kill Goku. For someone who just betrayed his commander for callously throwing lives away, this is especially heinous.
  40. Anime. The Story Of Cinderella: During their short tenure as maids in the castle, Katherine and Jeanne complain about being put to work with no warning or explanation, being told to change out of their fancy dresses and into plain clothing, the housekeeper constantly breathing down their necks, and being punished for slacking off with more chores. Neither girl appears to realize that all the things they complain about perfectly describe their own treatment of Cinderella.
  41. Characters.Destiny The Guardians: He talks a big game of honor and brotherhood, but when it's concerning literally anything opposing humanity, the mask breaks and reveals he wants to destroy anything that dares to even look at mankind funny. This gets multiple people alarmed and concerned.
  42. Characters.The Witcher 2019 The Northern Kingdoms:
    • Would Hurt a Child: Proving himself to be a distressing hypocrite considering how much he loves his own daughter, he's the one responsible for proposing a bounty of Ciri's head as in his eyes Ciri is too dangerous politically to be left alive.
    • Hypocrite: Remember him honoring the Law of Surprise for Duny? Twelve years later, he refuses to do the same for Geralt, because the child of surprise is the granddaughter that he has helped raise.
    • Hypocrite: Tetra cites bringing Kaer Morhen to justice for the good of Kaedwen because the Witchers are out of control. In reality, it was just plain and simple revenge on her part. When bringing an armed mob of peasants and her apprentices to Kaer Morhen, having destroyed Kitsu's home and lair to blame the Witchers, she also sided with Kitsu to bring an army of monsters to the fight.
  43. Film. The Devil Wears Prada: Andy and her friends deride fashion industry professionals at the start of the film as, "It's not like they're curing cancer," yet none of them have jobs that important either. One friend is a data analyst, and Nate is a fry cook. Where do they get off acting like their jobs are superior to fashion industry jobs?
  44. Series.Double The Fist: What qualifies as weak seems to change depending on Steve's mood, or what's funnier. Low context?
  45. Characters.A Song Of Ice And Fire Court Of Rhaenyra I:
    • If the very likely rumors about her "Velaryon" sons being fathered by Harwin Strong were true, her distrust of the dragonseeds and order to execute them comes across as incredibly hypocritical.
    • She proclaimed that she and Daemon would have an open marriage, each seeking pleasure where they wanted. When she heard that Nettles was in a relationship with Daemon, she gave orders for the girl to be killed, going as far as accusing Nettles of using sorcery to seduce Daemon, because a girl who looked so common couldn't possibly have Valyrian blood or enjoy Daemon's favor. Keep in mind that one of the arguments that the Greens used against Rhaenyra's children was that they had "common" features, and didn't look like trueborn Targaryen-Velaryon children.
    • When the issue of female inheritance beyond herself is raised, she gives an excuse about how she's a special case and in no way suggesting other women should be allowed to inherit before their brothers.
  46. Characters.Glee New Directions Original Members:
    • Cheating is not okay if it's on him, but if it's with him or he's the one doing the cheating, by all means, go ahead. To elaborate: he cheated on Quinn by kissing Rachel and having an emotional affair with her, but it was somehow understandably out-shadowed by the fact that Quinn cheated on Finn by having sex with Puck, got pregnant and tried to trick Finn into thinking that the child was his. Then Rachel cheated on Finn with Puck (kissing) and Finn didn't forgive her and made her feel horrible about it, pointing that among other things it made him reminiscent the situation with Quinn. Fair enough, but who does he hook up with after breaking up with Rachel? Quinn. Also, Quinn was with Sam at the time, but Finn explicitly declared that he couldn't be bothered by this when his happiness is on stake. It's basically like one long cheat-ception.
    • He was also repulsed when Rachel used him, Jesse and Puck to boost up her image, but not long before he was willing to harass his friends for the Glee club in order to maintain his social position, and frequently expressed the opinion that there's nothing wrong with aiming to be popular.
  47. Characters.Coffee Talk: Despite hosting a prank show, he doesn't like pulling pranks himself because he believes they're the lowest form of entertainment. Rather, he helps in production and marketing behind the scenes. This is because he was the subject of a traumatic prank during his time at Pro House Vlogs, so he doesn't want to be directly involved in them again.
  48. Characters.Sword Art Online Dark Territory: They seem to largely look down on female Dark Knights as being mannish for joining a predominantly male organisation and are never short on mocking comments aimed towards them, such as Lipia. This is in spite of the fact that their Dark Arts, which they've otherwise dedicated their lives to the study and advancement of, are believed to have been the creation of the Dark God Vecta, who for all intents and purposes is a male deity.
  49. Characters.Oz Aryans:
  50. Historical Villain Downgrade: Casino doesn't try to pretend that Ace is any kind of hero, but he's portrayed as a doting husband who only makes his wife wear a beeper after she tries to run off with their daughter. His real life inspiration Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal actually brutally beat his wife, openly cheated on her & humiliated her by buying other women more expensive gifts than her yet was still enough of a hypocrite to make her carry around a beeper so he knew where she was all the time and that she was being faithful before she tried to run off (which considering how he was treating her was a lot more understandable).
