    Nullifuge Samvara

Samvara, Nullifuge of Olam Tzalmavet

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lord_samvara.png
The Judge of the Dead with complete control over his realm. He takes it upon himself to "redeem" the souls of the sinful through any method he sees fit.
  • Badass Longcoat: He drapes himself in a long black cloaks that conceal his entire body underneath.
  • Big Bad: Of the entire Ellipsis series.
  • Body Horror: Samvara's entire body is comprised of overly-long arms with six fingers on each skeletal hand. Not to mention his disturbing menagerie of heads.
  • Cape Wings: His pair of large raven wings often blend into the black robes he's wearing, making his body seem even bulkier.
  • Chess with Death: The Rings of Rebirth serve as this, allowing Samvara to force human souls to compete in his games for the prize of resurrection.
  • Creepily Long Arms: He sports twelve arms that are as long as his body, but only keeps two out at a time. He hides the remaining ten underneath his cloak.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Samvara isn't above dark humor towards those suffering and dying during the Rings of Rebirth.
  • Extra Digits: He has six digits on each of his hands.
  • Face Framed in Shadow: Samvara's primary face (the one that is capable of speech) is hidden within the mouth of his centermost head. Because of this, only the manic eyes and sharp teeth are visible.
  • Fair-Play Villain: All of the Rings of Rebirth are designed to be survivable, or survivable at someone else's expense.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Played with and later inverted. He initially maintains the image of an overseer who genuinely wishes to help the Reprobates reform and become better people. However as the series goes on, this façade quickly wears away as Samvara reveals his true colors as a sadistic god who enjoys seeing humanity destroy themselves and others.
  • God Is Evil: Samvara utterly believes that God is a self-centered egotistical ruler, as evidenced by his spiteful and scathing dialogue towards the deity. Ironically, Samvara is guilty of everything he accuses God of.
Samvara: A hollow and vainglorious tyrant. So starved for validity that he forced your ilk into existence, subsequently demanding your subjugation and praise. Mankind. A most cruel and merciless brood... truly, you were created in His image.
  • The Grim Reaper: He's the in-universe version of Death, also serving as the Judge of the Dead.
  • Hannibal Lecture: He constantly talks down to the Reprobates and doesn't hesitate to chastise those who fail at the Rings of Rebirth; pointing out why they failed. He also throws a few jabs at those who are hopeful and religious, along with their gods too.
  • Humans Are Bastards: Samvara personally believes that humanity at its core is evil and will do anything to buy a few more precious moments of life. This is why he orchestrates the Rings of Rebirth, primarily as a way of proving his philosophy.
  • Hypocrite: He calls God out for being a vainglorious tyrant that enjoys the suffering of his creations, but ultimately everything he venomously accuses God of, he himself is guilty of in spades. In the cosmic order of things, Samvara is meant to be a fair judge that acts without bias so he can properly guide souls to their deserving eternal rest. Instead he abuses his godlike powers and position to act like a spoiled brat, playing games with the destinies of countless others while touting himself up like a proper savior.
  • Insane Troll Logic: All of his games and trials amount to this, as the basis revolves around "bettering oneself" by killing and tricking others.
  • It Amused Me: His underlying motivations for forcing human souls into his twisted games.
  • Kaizo Trap: He's a master of these, usually giving cryptic hints or entirely false information on how to survive a Ring of Rebirth. Even if you completed the trial, you could still be killed for missing the point of it entirely.
  • Kick the Dog: He enjoys seeing humans suffer and betray each other, always giving them ample opportunity to do so. This is taken exaggerated in the later Rings.
  • The Kindnapper: Inverted hard. He cherry-picks human souls to compete in the Rings of Rebirth with the intention of reforming them for when the winner returns to Earth. In actuality, he could care less.
  • Nested Mouths: Samvara has five heads. Four on the outside and another that hides within the mouth of the center head. It's this hidden head that is the true face of Samvara.
  • Nightmare Face: He has five nightmarish faces in total. The center head is a horned skull with sunken, sewed-shut eyes and a permanently gaping mouth. On the end of each horn is an identical head with closed mouths. Atop the center head is a small head resembling a baby with a cracked skull. Finally, the fifth and true head lies inside the center head's mouth where it always remains cloaked in shadow. There's also the fact that he wears several flayed faces as ornaments underneath his robes.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: Despite being the Big Bad, he simply orchestrates the Rings of Rebirth and oversees it like a referee; allowing the trials and his servants within to kill the Reprobates.
  • Our Demons Are Different: He's the embodiment of Death within the Ellipsis universe and serves as the judge of the dead. Yet despite this, Samvara is an evil demonic god through-and-through and almost everyone picks up on it immediately.
  • Satanic Archetype: For all intents and purposes, he acts far more like the Satan than the neutral judge of deceased souls he claims to be. This is increased by his hatred toward humanity and towards their creator.
  • Skull for a Head: Well, three out of five of his heads are skulls anyway.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: His voice is described as sickly, gravelly and deep; but always in a calm manner. This is just when he's acting. When he's truly enjoying himself however, it twists into something described as brimming with demented and psychotic energy.
  • Slasher Smile: Samvara's hidden face always has one of these present, whenever someone can spot it. He even bears a terrifying one of the front cover.
  • Trap Master: In essence, the Rings of Rebirth are deathtraps themed around a lesson of morality or how life works. Samvara has been doing these trials for eons, and has no intention of stopping.

    Hant Asrava

Hant Asrava

The demonic Warden of the Oubliette, he serves the Reprobates during their stay within Olam Tzalmavet.
  • Affectionate Nickname: "Az", given to him by Sada.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: As with all the denizens within the Realm of Null, he has an unusual skin color. Asrava's happens to be a silverish-blue.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Despite being treated as a Butt-Monkey by some (including his boss), he's an extremely powerful demon that has the power to make or break you in the Rings of Rebirth.
  • Butt-Monkey: The amount of crap he goes through serves as the comedic relief throughout the series.
  • Casanova Wannabe: He's a pervert and typically tries his luck with the female Reprobates to no avail. This is because he can only see humans once every four-hundred years, so he plans on enjoying the experience while it's there.
  • Combat Commentator: Chimes in during the Rings of Rebirth, making quips about some of the Reprobates.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Most of the time, he'll make morbid jokes regarding the deaths of other Reprobates or the terrible state of things with the Olam Tzalmavet.
  • Facial Markings: Like the other Qliphah, he has these. Asrava has two, each starting on his forehead and continuing down his eyes and cheeks.
  • Fat Bastard: He's described as extremely obese with an extreme attitude to match.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's an asshole to almost everyone he meets, but it's primarily due to all of the abuse he gets from Samvara off-screen. Deep down, he cares about the kind-hearted Reprobates and tries his best to help them however he can.
  • Large Ham: Asrava gets his amusement out of annoying the other Reprobates, especially when he isn't wanted.
  • Meaningful Name: Hant Asrava takes his name from one of the Tattva in Jain philosophy. The term "asava" itself literally means "influx", specifically relating to negative karma (such as impure thoughts and earthly desires) tainting the soul. It fits Asrava well, given he's the most debaucherous of the Qliphah.
  • The Medic: For a certain amount of Joss Coins, the Reprobates can purchase a Prayer of Petition from Asrava. This will allow him to heal any injuries they've sustained thus far; no matter how severe.
  • Our Demons Are Different: He's a Qliphah within Olam Tzalmavet and one of Samvara's most loyal servants. Despite this, he's not what you'd expect when it comes to most demonic depictions.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: Granted, less plucky and more eccentric and demented with his sense of humor. Regardless, he helps give the series enough comedy to prevent it from becoming too grim.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: He swears like it's going out of style, sprinkling his sentences with casual vulgarities and f-bombs.
  • Slasher Smile: Whenever Asrava is feeling jovial, he's described to sport one of these.
  • Trickster Mentor: Asrava becomes this to Sada, giving her training and tips to survive the Rings through some unconventional means.

    Hant Nirjara

Hant Nirjara

The dreaded Warden of Hell, Commandant of Olam Tzalmavet and Samvara's enforcer. As one of the Qliphah, Hant Nirjara is personally responsible for escorting the losing Reprobates to their eternal damnation and preventing souls within Hell from escaping.
  • 24-Hour Armor: Nirjara is forced to wear his massive suit of armor. Always.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: As with all beings within the Realm of Null, Nirjara's happens to be a grayish-periwinkle.
  • Clingy Costume: Asrava states that Nirjara couldn't remove the armor he wears even if he tried. It's there for keeps.
  • Co-Dragons: With Hant Kashaya and Hant Asrava.
  • Dragged Off to Hell: He's the guy who does the dragging.
  • The Faceless: The only exposed flesh on his entire body is the mouth and chin.
  • Facial Markings: Like the other Qliphah, he sports these. In Nirjara's case, he only has a singular stripe going down his lower lip and chin.
  • Flowery Elizabethan English: Nirjara uses this to great effect and is the only one out of the Qliphah who does so.
  • Iron Maiden: His massive hulking armor resembles one, as Sada points out. Asrava takes it a step further and implies to Sada that it holds the same function as one; making it more as a punishment for Nirjara instead of something to protect him.
  • Malevolent Masked Man: His entire head (sans chin) is obscured in an incredibly creepy looking helmet. Throw in the fact that he's the warden of Hell and you have the entire package!
  • Meaningful Name: Like with Samvara and the Qliphah, Hant Nirjara takes his name from one of the Tattva in Jain philosophy. The term "nirjara" itself literally means "destruction", specifically relating to the obliteration of karma from the soul. It's only fitting that Nirjara's role within Olam Tzalmavet is to preside over the souls of the endlessly tormented and make certain it remains that way.
  • Mighty Glacier: Due to his restrictive armor, his mobility is extremely limited in the head and arms. It's to the point that he can't even walk on his own, so he levitates around instead.
  • The Power of Hate: He's described as the "embodiment of hatred and anger" by Hant Asrava.
  • The Quiet One: Hant Nirjara hardly says anything and is easily the least talkative of the Nullians.
  • Scary Impractical Armor: His massive bulky armor makes him look terrifying, but it completely impedes his movement and weighs him down to the point where he has to constantly levitate to travel. It's implied though that this is the exact purpose of the armor to begin with.

    Hant Kashaya

Hant Kashaya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/volume_5000_00_09_17still02800_00_00_00still001_copy.png
The sinister Keeper of Thaumiel and right-hand of Samvara. She oversees the Rings of Rebirth and the struggles of the Reprobates.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: As with all the denizens within the Olam Tzalmavet, he has an unusual skin color. Asrava's happens to be a silverish-blue.
  • Co-Dragons: With Hant Asrava and Hant Nirjara.
  • Due to the Dead: She ends every Ring of Rebirth by reading out the full names of every Reprobate who died in the past trial.
  • Facial Markings: Like the other Qliphah, she has these on her face. Kashaya possesses three of these, over her eyes and forehead specifically.
  • Green and Mean: Her associated colors are green and while Kashaya's not the type to display it outwardly, she's easily the most sadistic of the trio.
  • Horns of Villainy: Has a massive set atop her head that resembles a crown. They're so large that they've actually collided and fused together.
  • Insectoid Aliens: Like the other Qliphah, she has an insect theme to her design. In this case, it's moths and some of the horned larva they originate as.
  • Meaningful Name: Hant Kashaya takes her name from one of the Tattva in Jain philosophy. The term "kashaya" itself literally means "passion", which relates to over-attachment toward people or things. This ties into Kashaya's personality, as she is the most lecherous of the Qliphah.
  • Most Common Superpower: The only thing to match Kashaya's ungodly power is her massive bust.
  • Organic Bra: A thick chitin material covers Kashaya's nipples and crotch.
  • Partial Transformation: Her left arm is entirely covered in chitin; leaving it disfigured and scaly with large talons.
  • Red Right Hand: More like a purple left hand that's covered in scales and topped off with razor-sharp talons. This Qliphah is likely not a good guy.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: She only ever wears a leather slit dress over her lower half, leaving her entire chest bare. Kashaya isn't stupid though and openly flirts with some of the Reprobates.
  • The Smurfette Principle: So far, she is the only known existing Qliphah to be female.

    Gozu and Mezu

Gozu and Mezu

Guardian Fiends that serve within the Swamp of Blood. Gozu is deaf and mute executioner while Mezu is a crippled and blind beast.
  • Abandon the Disabled: They both used to be formidable servants to Samvara, but after they were permanently disabled, the two were abandoned in the Swamp of Blood to serve as a trial for any new Reprobates.
  • Blind Weaponmaster: Mezu is blind, but still manages to use echolocation to find his prey and devour them.
  • Body Horror: Both guardians are described in disturbing detail, having rotting flesh and fur with their bodies comprised of multiple animal and human parts.
  • Fat and Skinny: Gozu is a fat obese one while Mezu is a incredibly skinny one.
  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: All of the Reprobates awaken from their past, human lives and immediately bare witness to these two hideous beasts.
  • Hidden Eyes: Mezu has his head wrapped in old bandages, obscuring his blinded eyes.
  • Lean and Mean: Mezu is incredibly sickly and bony, like a starved horse. Despite this, he's incredibly deadly.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: Both Gozu and Mezu are crafted from various animal and human parts. Gozu has the head of an ox mixed with a lion, while Mezu has the head of a sickly horse crossed with a wolf.
  • More Teeth than the Osmond Family: Mezu has several rows of teeth
  • Our Demons Are Different: They derive their namesakes from Ox-Head and Horse-Face, two guardians of Hell in Asian mythology. Unlike most depictions of the demons however, Gozu and Mezu are a lot more ghastly and disturbing.
  • Screaming Warrior: Mezu constantly screeches in ghastly ear-piecing wails while bounding around the swamp. He also uses this as a form of echolocation.
