"You don't want to know what I know. You get me to talk, I promise you you'll just be opening Pandora's box."
Played By: Peter Weller

"What I did was in the interests for the destiny of this country, and I'm not talking about the version you read on the op-ed pages of the New York Times, I'm talking about the politics of survival. The way the world really works."

A former Director of Field Operations of CTU Los Angeles and Vice President of Research and Development at Omicron International.

He was hired by Graem Bauer and President Charles Logan and worked with them and Alan Wilson to operate the sale of Sentox nerve gas to Vladimir Bierko and his Russian separatists during Day 5. He was killed by Jack Bauer for his part in the deaths of David Palmer, Michelle Dessler, and the apparent death of Tony Almeida at the end of that day.

Tropes

  • Arch-Enemy: Despite being a one season villain, he is a runner up behind Nina, Logan, and Cheng, due to his personal connection to Jack and his actions.
  • Best Served Cold: Jack has plenty of opportunity to kill him, but waits until Bierko is dead before doing so.
  • Broken Pedestal: Was Jack's mentor, but who got fired when Jack learned he was taking bribes. And then comes the sentox's conspiracy...
  • Character Death: Jack coldly executes him after Bierko is defeated.
  • Climax Boss: With Bierko. While Bierko provides the climatic fight, it is Henderson's final stand off with Jack is the emotional climax of Day 5.
  • Cold Sniper: He specialized in sniping when he was in the military.
  • Dies Wide Open: The last shot of Henderson has his eyes still open, staring lifelessly upward.
  • The Dragon: For Charles Logan. Most of the conflict on Day 5 is against him.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: That being said, he is the biggest challenge for Jack during Day 5, and has enough autonomy to make decisions for himself.
  • Enemy Mine: Eventually Henderson teams up with Jack to stop Bierko.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Which is why Jack uses his wife as leverage. That being said, not even his wife's potential crippling is enough to convince him to spill his guts.
    • He and his wife did seem to care for Kim when Jack was gone. And, in a very fucked up way, he does seem to have some remaining affection for Jack.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Jack : both are ruthless, highly skilled and dedicated. He even has a friendship with a US president. Of all the villains in the show, he is probably the best one.
    • His dynamic with Logan is a dark version of Jack's dynamic with Palmer. While David and Jack are true friends and allies, Logan and Henderson are not, and Henderson knows he needs to keep Logan blackmailed if he wants to survive.
  • Fallen Hero: He was once a well-regarded Director of Field Operations for CTU, and even recruited Jack. However, he lost his job due to corruption and ended up working with the Sentox Conspirators.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Henderson seems like a fun, genial guy with a sharp wit. It is very much fake and he's really a power-hungry, ruthless killer.
  • Face Death with Dignity: He does not beg or try to surrender when Jack has him cornered.
  • Graceful Loser: He calmly accepts his defeat and imminent death at Jack's hands with a good-natured "Good for you, Jack".
  • The Heavy: For season 5, alongside Vladimir Bierko. They are both taken out in the same place with 2-3 minutes of difference.
  • Hero Killer: As Jack puts it, "You are responsible for the deaths of David Palmer, Tony Almeida, and Michelle Dessler."
  • I Have Your Wife: Played straight with the informant's daughter. Inverted earlier on with his wife. Even after Jack shoots her in the leg, Henderson only apologizes to his wife and refuses to talk.
  • Manipulative Bastard.
  • Old Soldier: He's in his elder years, but frequently takes out much younger combat-trained men with little difficulty.
  • Parental Substitute: There is a bit of this dinamic with Jack.
  • Villainy Discretion Shot: His (possible) killing of an informant's young daughter and the EMT's trying to rescue her is never brought up.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Like his co-conspirators, he justifies his actions as power politics and in the best interest of the country. Given the Sentox conspirators were trying to access oil in Central Asia, it's clear to Jack it was about his greed for power.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: All the time. He is a truly sneaky bastard.
  • Worthy Opponent: Considers Jack to be one.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Averted since he knows he's an expendable underling like Cummings & Nathanson. He's well-aware of Logan's tendency to kill off his underlings, so he threatens to release the digital recording incriminating himself and Logan if the Sentox conspirators come after him. He also expects Jack to pull this one him (but Jack outwits him).

Agents

    James Nathanson

James Nathanson

Played By: Geraint Wyn Davies

An ex-CIA officer and a mid-level member of the Sentox nerve gas conspiracy before and during Day 5. He sustained a direct partnership with terrorist leaders and helped provide them with a weapon of mass destruction.

Tropes

  • Character Death: Nathanson is shot and killed by henchmen of Vladimir Bierko.
  • He Knows Too Much: The reason his death is ordered.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He manipulated the Dawn Brigade for a while, playing Bierko, Beresch and Erwich. Eventually, however, Bierko found out and had Nathanson killed.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When he realizes that Bierko would want him dead, Nathanson tries to flee.
  • Villain's Dying Grace: Mortally wounded, Nathanson gives Jack a valuable computer chip and hints at the larger conspiracy.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: So he claims to Jack.
Jack: You're never going to be able to justify killing David Palmer.
Nathanson: That was an unfortunate necessity. We admired Palmer, but we had other priorities. This country needs an excuse to secure its oil interests in Asia; a reason that Russia and the rest of the world can get behind.
Jack: I've heard your reasoning from Walt Cummings. It's still treason.
    Nathanson: No. It's a realpolitik.

    Walt Cummings

    Conrad Haas

Conrad Haas

Played By: Jeff Kober

An experienced assassin, hired by the Sentox conspirators to take out former President David Palmer. Haas was also assigned to take out Michelle Dessler, Tony Almeida, and Chloe O'Brian, in order to frame Jack Bauer for the murders.

Tropes

  • Cold Sniper: How he takes out David Palmer.
  • Hero Killer: Haas kills David Palmer and Michelle Dessler, on Henderson's orders.
  • It's Personal: The second Jack learns that he was the one who personally assassinated David Palmer, he immediately forgoes his promise to get him any sort of medical aid and shoots him point blank.
  • Professional Killer: He's an assassin, after all.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Despite appearing in only one episode, his assassination of David Palmer is a huge event for the show.
