Tropes applying to all characters
- Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: There are blue, orange, and purple wombats, pink tarsiers, orange moose, the list goes on.
- Barefoot Cartoon Animal: None of the characters wear shoes.
- Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: Plenty of characters only wear shirts, but not pants.
- National Animal Stereotypes: Zig-zagged. Only a few of the characters' nationalities correspond with their species. For example, JunJun and his family are Philippine eagles, so they all speak Tagalog. However, none of the marsupials in the series, such as the wombats and Leiko and Duffy, have Australian accents.
- Pantsless Males, Fully-Dressed Females: Zig-zagged. Almost none of the characters wear pants, and that includes the girls and women. The only characters that wear pants are the crab family and the wombats.
- World of Technicolor Hair: Not all of the characters have hair, but if they do, they are in colors such a blue, pink, or green.

- Be the Ball: The 3 Marsupial Kids seem to like curling up, and rolling around like cute furry balls.
- Odd Name Out: Malik's name doesn't start with a 'Z,' unlike Zadie and Zeke. On the flip side, Zadie's name does not rhyme with Malik and Zeke.
- Raised by Grandparents: The wombat kids are raised by their grandmother. The executives behind the show have confirmed that Season 2, if greenlit, will explain the reasoning for this.
- Sibling Team: They always work together to solve problems.
- Two Guys and a Girl: Malik and Zeke are the two guys and Zadie is the girl.
Malik
- Voiced by: Ian Ho
- Agent Scully: Takes up this role in "Crab Quakes," where he refuses to believe that a dragon made the weird sound that scared the crabs. He's proven wrong - it was a dragon toy that made the noise.
- Bookworm: He enjoys reading.
- Classical Music Is Cool: "Me Time" reveals that he likes classical music, showing how he's the intellectual of the team.
- It's All About Me: In "Brother Day," Malik's planned activities for Brother Day consist of only the things that he likes, and what not Zeke likes. Eventually, he realizes his mistake and sets out to put things right with Zeke.

- Obsessively Organized: He's known to make lists of pros and cons for every situation.

- Red Oni, Blue Oni: He's the conscientious blue oni to Zadie's exuberant red oni.
- Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: He's the Savvy Guy to Zadie's Energetic Girl. He's a careful planner, while Zadie usually usurps his thoughts with snap decisions.
- Trademark Favorite Food: He really, REALLY likes pancakes.
Zadie
- Voiced by: Mia SwamiNathan
- Agent Mulder: She (and Zeke) take on this role in "Crab Quakes." They believe that a dragon made the weird and scary sound. As it turns out, they were technically right: the thing that made the scary sound was a wind-up dragon toy. Mr. E was shipping it to the Everything Emporium at the same time that the crabs were sleeping, and it's why neither of them got much sleep.
- Cheated Angle: Her hair flips sides when she turns her head. While we do see Zadie head-on, her hair is always to the side.
- Cheerful Child: She's full of energy.
- Collector of the Strange: She collects chattering teeth, of all things.
- Genki Girl: She loves zooming from place to place and forming hundreds of ideas at once.
- Hidden Depths: Her special talent is doing tricks with soccer balls.
- Meaningful Appearance: The lightning bolt on her shirt matches her lightning-quick personality.
- Ms. Imagination: In almost every episode, she comes up with creative Imagine Spots on how to solve the problem.
- One-Man Band: In "Zadie and the Really Big, Really Loud Noisy Thing," her Really Big, Really Loud Noisy Thing enables her to play multiple instruments at once.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: She's the gung-ho red oni to Malik's pedantic blue oni.
- Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: She's the Energetic Girl to Malik's Savvy Guy. For every practical plan that Malik suggests, Zadie will always add fanciful improvisations to it.
- Sore Loser: She always likes to win. In "Zadie's Shell Shuffle," she wants to win at hide and seek, but JunJun keeps giving away her hiding places. She snaps at him for it.
Zeke
- Voiced by: Rain Janjua
- Annoying Younger Sibling: Zeke acts like one towards Malik at the start of "Brother Day," jumping around and repeatedly asking to help Malik.
- The Baby of the Bunch: The youngest wombat kid.
- Companion Cube: He is never seen without his plush toy Snout.
- Constantly Curious: Since he is so young, he asks questions that drive the episode's plots.
- Crying Critters: He tends to cry a lot, like in "The Sleepover" and "Brother Day."
- The Cuckoolander Was Right: In "Helper For the Day," Zeke's categorizations of items seem confusing at first, but they make sense once people come to buy them. For example, milk and sponges don't usually go together, but Amado buys them because a sponge is useful for cleaning up spilled milk.
- The Cutie: He's so sweet, innocent, and lovable, and Snout helps accentuate this.
- Does Not Like Spam: "Brother Day" reveals that Zeke doesn't like grapefruit juice, since it's too sour for him.
- The Heart: There's no doubt that his infectious need for love brings the group together.
- Intergenerational Friendship: With Mr. E.
- Lost Toy Grievance: He's in tears after losing Snout in "Snout and About." Luckily, his siblings are there to help find the toy.

- Motor Mouth: Zeke loves talking nonstop and thinking out loud.
- Open the Iris: Zeke's irises tend to enlarge when he's really excited about something, like when Malik lets him play with a rubberband in "Brother Day."
- Orange/Blue Contrast: His orange fur contrasts with his blue shirt.
- Primal Fear: It's implied that he's afraid of the dark, since he always make sure to keep the closet light on when he's asleep. He's also afraid of heights, since he was scared to go zip-lining in "Brother Day."
- Puppy-Dog Eyes: In "Helper For the Day," Zeke makes these eyes at Super while begging her to let him be Mr. E's helper.
- Security Blanket: Snout provides Zeke lots of comfort, and being away from Snout is very distressing for him.
Grandma Super
- Voiced by: Yanna McIntosh
- Aerith and Bob: Super is normally an adjective, not a proper noun. All the other characters have normal names.
- Big Good: She's patient and loving, both as a grandmother and as the Superintendent of the Treeborhood. When someone has a problem, they go to her for help.
- Cool Old Lady: She acts both as a parent and a leader of the Treeborhood, and makes impressive inventions.
- Eye Glasses: Her glasses often change shape with her expressions. For example, when she squints her eyes, her glasses will shrink as well.
- Heroes Gone Fishing: When she's not solving problems, she likes to take time for herself, also known as her "Me Time." She finds taking apart motorcycles to be quite relaxing.
- Instant Expert: In "Crab Quakes," Super creates a detailed sand sculpture on her first try.
- Orange/Blue Contrast: Her blue fur contrasts with her orange dress.
- Sacred Hospitality: In "Crab Quakes," Super proves herself to be a warm and welcoming host, letting the crabs stay in her house and encouraging them to make themselves at home. She doesn't even mind that the crabs poured a bunch of sand into the house.
- Wrench Wench: She's almost always fixing things, and always has a nail and wrench on her person.
The Treeborhood
Mr. E
- Voiced by: Joseph Motiki
- Black Sheep: He was the only one in his family who didn't know how to draw a perfect square, to the point where they put his picture of his failed square on the wall alongside everyone else's perfect squares, making him look bad.
- Butt-Monkey: He suffers a lot of comical mishaps, like how he kept dropping his books in "The Mighty Zeke."
- Character Development: Starting in "The Treeborhood Photo Album," he slowly starts softening up toward others. For example, he happily told Zadie about the history of the Everything Emporium and let her have a photo of it, whereas, in older episodes, he would get annoyed at her. He later becomes good friends with Louisa in "Runway Recycling." He still gets annoyed with the wombats in episodes like "A Boxful of Snout" and "Color Fun," but it is progress.
- Comical Overreacting: In "Campout Confusion," he cries over the idea of not having marshmallows at a campout.
- Drama Queen: He tends to get melodramatic over the smallest things. In "Helper For the Day," Mr. E starts crying Ocular Gushers when he finds out that Duffy was unhappy with her purchase, thinking that it will ruin his reputation.
- Hidden Depths: He's talented at making art with soup cans.
- Incredibly Lame Fun: Mr. E considers things like organizing items on shelves, shaking boxes of paperclips, and sitting inside a laundry hamper to be entertaining.
- Inelegant Blubbering: Cries hysterically when he is unable to paint a square.
- Intergenerational Friendship: With Zeke, though he won't admit it. Mr. E seems to like Zeke more than the other wombats, hugging him in "Summerweenie Halloweenie," headpatting him in "The Mighty Zeke," giving him free candy in "Measure for Measure," and letting him be his helper in "Helper For the Day." In "Zeke's Collection Selection," one of Zeke's special memories is the two of them playing hopscotch together. He later strikes up a friendship with Louisa in "Runway Recycling," repeatedly calling her a "tiny genius" throughout the episode.
- Interspecies Friendship: His BFF is Ellie, a moose, though on Mr. E's end, the feelings go past friendship.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's grouchy most of the time, but he does like the wombats deep down, and is pretty civil with the rest of the Treeborhood.
- Laugh of Love: He doesn't laugh much, but when he does laugh, one half of it is for ridiculous questions and the other half is when he's around Ellie. For example, he laughs after Ellie tells him that she wants to buy a hat, and chuckles after Ellie thanks him for inviting her to lunch.
- Lovable Lizard: Although fastidious, he's ultimately a warm-hearted, helpful, and hard-working iguana.
- Love Makes You Dumb: In "Measure for Measure," he goes crazy while trying to find a hat for Ellie at the Everything Emporium. When there's not a hat that suits her, Mr. E melodramatically fires himself. He only rehires himself when the wombats tell him that they're making a hat for Ellie. He never acts like this with anyone else but Ellie.
- Manchild: He's a man in his thirties who doesn't know how to paint a square. Also, he throws a child-like tantrum when he is unable to make a perfect one the first few times he attempts to draw one, complete with Inelegant Blubbering.
- Neat Freak: He's zealous about keeping everything tidy and organized.
- Nervous Wreck: In "Cafe Chaos," Mr. E invites Ellie to lunch. He gets nervous when Ellie arrives. Louisa takes note of this and asks why he's so nervous. Mr. E claims that he just wanted things perfect for a "special friend" like Ellie.
- Number Obsession: The episode "Count to 10" claims that he's obsessed with the number 9, which is his favorite number. He even has a store policy where he refuses to stock 10 of anything.
- Obsessively Organized: He has a precise arrangement for all of his items, and he'll get angry if something is just a tiny bit off-kilter.
- Open the Iris: In "Gift For a Fish," he expands his irises and gets shines in his eyes after Ellie dries him off.
- One-Letter Name: We don't know what 'E' stands for.
- The Perfectionist: He always wants everything to be perfect, especially the shelves in his store.
- Polka Dork: He's revealed to be into polka in "Runway Recycling."
- Punny Name: If you say his name fast, it sounds like "mystery."
- Same Clothes, Different Year: A Flash Back in "Zoom In Zadie" shows that Mr. E has been wearing the same glasses, bowling hat, and purple shirt since he was little.
- Slave to PR: Implied. In "Helper For the Day," Mr. E gets very upset about Duffy returning her purchase, since the Everything Emporium never had an unhappy customer before, and he fears it will ruin his standing within the community.
- Tantrum Throwing: In "Zoom In Zadie," he keeps throwing tantrums like a child when he can't draw perfect squares, including tossing his failed squares all over the places
- Terrible Artist: Everyone in Mr. E's family has been known to draw a perfect square, except for Mr. E himself. Ever since childhood, Mr. E struggled with drawing the simplest of shapes.
- Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: He's the Tiny Guy to Ellie's Huge Girl.
- Tsundere: He is easily irritated, but secretly cares for the Wombats. He does not, however, care for the messes that they create.
- Unwitting Instigator of Doom: In "Talent Turmoil," Mr. E refused to get help with setting up his props. His cans fall out of the paper bag and mess up all the props, putting them in the wrong order. This causes the talent show to get ruined.
- Verbal Backspace: In "Gift For a Fish," Ellie asks to dance with him. He excitedly shouts "That is a thumbs up affirmative!" After realizing what he just said and that it might reveal his feelings for Ellie, he says "Uh, I-I mean, sure!"
- We Sell Everything: Take one good guess what the Everything Emporium sells.
- Workaholic: He works all the time, even on Halloween.
Ellie
- Voiced by: Tymika Tafari
- Comical Overreacting: Can get comically over-emotional, "jumping for joy when the Fishmans have their babies" and "crying copious tears at the end of a movie."
- Effortless Amazonian Lift: She shows her fitness in "Gift for a Fish" when she catches Mr. E in her arms.
- Exhausted Eye Bags: In "A Sleep Story for Ellie," she got eye bags because she couldn't sleep.
- Fitness Nut: A positive example. She loves working out, her house is filled with gym-related objects and in "Snout and About," she's shown lifting weights before going to bed.
- Friend to All Children: She is great with children, seeing as how she's a babysitter and EMT. She has stickers, lollipops, and finger puppets in her first-aid kit to cheer up hurt kids, as seen in "Brother Day." The wombats also consider her the "best babysitter ever," and in "Amazing Adventure," she comes up with a treasure hunt that they love. The "What Should I Try Next?" music video shows her babysitting the Fishman babies and getting them to sleep.
- Interspecies Friendship: BFFs with Mr. E.
- The Medic: Is an emergency medical technician, and does things such as "patching up all the Treeborhood boo boos."
- The Mentor: Is said to be a mentor to Zadie.
- Moose Are Idiots: Inverted. She's clearly smart enough to be an EMT.
- Morality Pet: Downplayed as Mr. E is not an evil character, but although he does care for the rest of the Treeborhood, he acts grumpy most of the time. The only character he’s outwardly and consistently affectionate towards is Ellie. He’d do anything and everything for Ellie, even if it involves the wombats.
- Nice Girl: She patches up injuries, is reliable, and will gladly listen to Zeke talk for hours. She's also gentle and motherly towards the wombats.
- Oblivious to Love: Ellie is unaware of the fact that Mr. E has a friendship crush on her.
- The Reliable One: She's a rock for the wombats; someone they can always count on for support.
- Textile Work Is Feminine: In "Gift For a Fish," she knits a hammock for the baby fish.
- Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: The Huge Girl to Mr. E's Tiny Guy.
- Womanchild: Downplayed. She is a competent and well-functioning adult, but she collects toy firetrucks, needs bedtime stories to go to sleep, and likes sliding up and down a fire pole. This is a positive example, since it's likely that her love of childlike things is why she's a great Friend to All Children.

- Character Catchphrase: "Did you not know?"
- Cheery Pink: She's a bright, cheerful pink tarsier.

- I Call It "Vera": Leiko's guitar is named Penelope.
- Loony Librarian: Leiko is a librarian AND a guitar rocker, which seems contradictory.
- Obsessed with Food: Duffy is said to be a "foodie," testing her creations at the Eat 'N Greet.

- Family Man: There's nothing Fergus wouldn't do to make his family the happiest.
