Needs Help: Authors Saving Throw

Go To

To-do list:

  • Since out-of-universe examples require confirmation from Word of God and/or Word of Saint Paul regarding why the work was changed, any on-page examples and wicks that don't fit the new restrictions must be removed. In-universe examples do not have this restriction. In addition, since this was moved from YMMV to Trivia due to the new requirement for confirmation, examples belong on Trivia/ subpages instead of YMMV/ subpages. If the removal of examples on subpages renders the subpage too small, or if there are no valid examples left, Cut List the subpage, and, if there are any valid examples left, move them to the parent page (either the main page for Author's Saving Throw or a work's Trivia subpage).

Original post

So. Author's Saving Throw. Based on issues raised in this thread, there is some misuse going on, which stems from the fact that tropers don't actually seem to know what the trope is about.

The trope page itself is confused. It has a YMMV barrier up at the top, which means it's a subjective audience reaction. However, the description doesn't actually say anything about how the audience takes it, and even says the trope may be done well or poorly. The idea of the trope as described is about authorial intent; the description says it's a story written with the intention of fixing something which was previously seen as a mistake. This means that the actual trope is objective, though likely Trivia. However, since actually confirming an example would require Word of God or at least Word of Saint Paul, and that is rather rare, almost all the examples appear to be tropers saying that they liked a later instalment better than an earlier one.

And then there's the matter of Thematic Series, where ideas and mechanics recur but characters and setting are different every time. To my mind, these come across as equivalent to "Many fans disliked the romance subplot in Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope. They were pleased when George Lucas' next movie, Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark, had a much better-executed romance story." See the issue?

As it currently stands, ATS sounds like it is either a type of retcon, or at least retcon-adjacent. As such, it can only apply to either instalments within a single continuity, or to remakes. Games can potentially have an ATS though patches and updates.

Here is the wick check:

A wick check for Author's Saving Throw.

Methodology: The Related page was downloaded at 14:08 Irish Summer Time (UTC+1) on 24 July 2022 and links to non-WMG/ extracted via sed, grep, and cut. A set of 70 pages was generated by selecting the nth Fibonacci number modulo total items in the list, where 1 ≤ n ≤ 70. No scripts were used in this wick check.

    Actually valid; cites the creators

YMMV.Atop The Fourth Wall

  • In the commentary of "Pokemon: The Electric Tale of Pikachu", Lewis admits to having pulled one with why Missingno was afraid of Lord Vyce, aware that didn't track with how he built it up as an unstoppable universe-devouring Lovecraftian demon. He came up with the idea that Vyce's attacks were able to hurt it, but — according to Missingno, at least — couldn't kill it, but it found being able to be hurt at all such a blow to the ego that it hid out in our dimension so Linkara would defeat Vyce. It was NOT afraid of Vyce; just sufficiently annoyed with him.

YMMV.Cookie Run

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • For the longest time, obtaining Magic Candy ingredients was a chore if you got the cookie after the event or ran out of ingredients from the trials, resulting in players having to spend gems and magic dust to obtain them. January 2021's update now has higher chances of players getting item pouches that contain the Magic Candy Ingredients for Cookies who have their own Trials (in other words, you can get them for Dark Choco, Milk and Purple Yam but not Herb, Moon Rabbit or Tiger Lily just yet). This also includes the Magic Candies for Moonlight, Fire Spirit, Sea Fairy, Dark Enchantress, and Wind Archer too.
    • Want to get some Rainbow Cubes, Gems, or Coins with the cookie in your lobby? For the longest time you needed a certain cookie to obtain one of the three and would have to search online to figure it out and then swap them out if they weren't your current Lobby Cookie. In early 2021, this was changed so that you can have any cookie in the lobby and choose your reward.
    • The Season 6 update bought about a bevy of unwelcome changes (see Contested Sequel below) that massively bought down the gameplay experience for fans, particularly those who don’t spend any money at all on the game, to the point where some threatened to delete their accounts and actual trucks displaying messages to Devsisters were parked outside their headquarters. Devsisters finally responded and rolled back some of the more controversial choices in July 2021. These changes included prohibiting the use of Invocation Cards in just about every competitive mode, reducing the minimum cookie level needed to use cards from 15 to 12, and making it so that a Cookie's skill starts at the beginning of a run again.
    • In the Season 6 rehaul, the UI was derided for making things more complicated. The December 2021 update reverted the UI to the initial interface, but with additional buttons on the top for easier navigation, with with announcement video even mentioning the return was due to fan feedback.
    • The Grand Champion League was only for the highest skilled players or those who were willing to fork over 3000 gems to enter. The February 2022 update now reduces it to those who have 10,000 trophies.
    • Speaking of Magic Candies, upgrading them for Common, Rare and Epic Cookies still tended to be a chore to do since it requires gathering materials in their Cookie Trials (which was only made worse by the removal of bonus missions), which can take a long time, and upgrading Magic Candies only had a chance to succeed. However, the March 2022 Update removed the probability of the success and failure of upgrading Magic Candies, which made upgrading them much easier than before with or without bonus missions.

    Looks valid but no source

Main.A Nazi By Any Other Name

  • In Grant Morrison's penultimate arc of New X-Men, Planet X, Holocaust survivor Magneto goes more and more mindlessly berserk as the arc wears on, culminating in his beginning to herd all surviving baseline humans in New York into crematoria. One of his servants even points out that he's acting like a Nazi. This caused a bit of fan outcry, and Marvel execs were so horrified that they immediately said that wasn't Magneto. This is hardly the first time Magneto has been compared to the Nazis, nor the first instance of someone pointing it out to him, or even Magneto acknowledging it himself.

Main.Addictive Magic

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Giles's past as a demon summoner was treated a bit like a hooligan/stoner phase—he himself describes it as an extraordinary high. Willow's subplot in season six was less subtle. It started with her abusing Mundane Utility and getting carried away with her rapidly increasing power. It ended in "Wrecked", with her visiting an actual "pusher" who provided his customers with spells and weird hallucinations. It was later subject to an Author's Saving Throw that denied that magic itself is addictive.

Fixing a plot hole that people weren't really complaining about.

Main.A Wizard Did It

  • In Beauty and the Beast, the movie apparently takes place over several months, judging by the change of seasons while Belle is at the castle. This creates the problem of just how far the castle is from the village - ranging from several days' travel (the length of time Maurice spends in the forest on his first journey there) to several hours (this is the time during which Maurice is returned to the village) and then a matter of minutes hard ride (the mob's assault on the castle followed by Belle's race to get there). It's also never explained why no one in the village knows the castle exists when it's apparently so nearby. Even taking into account the castle being hidden, magic is the only explanation for these oddities. The 2017 live-action remake goes out of its way fill these plot holes: it explicitly reduces Belle's stay at the castle to just five days, removes the changing seasons, and instead places the castle in Endless Winter as part of the curse, and explains that the villagers (including Mrs Potts's husband) had their memories of the castle erased.

Main.Audience Alienating Ending

  • Voltron: Legendary Defender's final episode is disliked by a majority of the fanbase with some complaints being about the fates of certain characters such as the deaths of Allura and Lotor, the former being a major woobie and the latter being a very deep and compelling villain who many thought would have more to do, Honerva being a Karma Houdini who gets away with almost destroying the multiverse and for Lance's and Shiro's epilogue with the former becoming an Altean for some reason and Shiro marrying his helmsman who he barely interacted with as a hamfisted attempt at an Author's Saving Throw regarding the way they handled the character of Adam. Not even a later Word of God confirmation that Allura was not truly dead could stem the controversy, as the same source of that confirmation also involved the executive producers acting openly dismissive towards the outraged fanbase. Although one of the creators, Joaquin Dos Santos, apologized on Twitter due to the nature of her death, it was overshadowed because it took over 2 years after the finale's release for any acknowledgement of the backlash, much less an official apology.

Main.Dangerous Device Disposal Debacle

  • At the end of Final Fantasy XIV's patch 3.3 story quests, Alphinaud and the Warrior of Light toss Nidhogg's eyes into the nearby abyss — which predictably end up in the hands of the Ascians by their next appearance. It wasn't explained until 3.5 that they were expecting them to be destroyed in a torrent of eternally clashing wind and water aether that resides at the bottom of the abyss in question. Defied much later, the next time Team Good gets their hands on the things — Estinien notes that they're completely depleted of aether anyway, but takes no chances and destroys them for good on the spot.

Main.Fight Scene Failure

  • When the Dark Order debuted on AEW Dynamite, a camera caught one of the Creepers obviously faking his punches on Dustin Rhodes. The backlash against this botch almost killed the group before it got going — although they did salvage it by working it into the story with the offending creeper getting punished for allegedly failing to hit Dustin on purpose.

Main.Unpopular Popular Character

YMMV.Abraxas Hrodvitnon

AlternativeCharacterInterpretation. My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic

  • Celestia's tendency to do absolutely nothing other than sent Twilight and the gang after a perceived threat against Equestria, along with her utter curb-stomping by Chrysalis the one time she did try something (granted Chrysalis had a power boost, but you would expect Celestia to have at least been able to put up more of a fight than that) and how Nightmare Moon had her on the ropes in their flashback battle until Celestia brandished the Elements of harmony, have made many fans question her strength. Is she actually powerful and holding back to do behind the scenes work, or just a Badass on Paper who knows that she does not have the power to do much of anything against a powerful enemy and has to hide behind others? The Cutie Remark showing that every single future of Equestria without Twilight and her friends is a war-torn post-apocalyptic nightmare only serves to imply the latter. While this means that only one villain succeeded and the rest were defeated, there is no word on whether Celestia or the current dominant villain was responsible for it. Later episodes have attempted to address this by claiming she holds her power back out of fear of harming others, but this raises other questions. Does she honestly believe standing by and doing nothing, holding back to the point villains defeat her, and/or only relying on others actually endangers her subjects less than just fighting back herself?

Reconstruction.Film

YMMV.Odin Sphere

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • It has been long held by fans that Mercedes and especially Ingway received too cruel an ending in the True End of the game when compared to Gwendolyn/Oswald and Cornelius/Velvet. The Updated Re-release provides a new screen after the shot of the World Tree (Mercedes' reborn form), showing Ingway in the Netherworld and a root with Mercedes' signatue flower blooming from it reaching him, which will allow him to be taken to her so they can be Together in Death. A new piece of official artwork takes it even further by suggesting that they were later reincarnated as Alice's parents.
    • One of the biggest complaints of the game even back when it released was that the battle system was clunky, slow-paced, and an absolute slog to work through and level, especially with the food system. Leifthrasir completely reworks the system from the ground-up, not only improving the pacing significantly but also allowing for command shortcuts for your various skills, turning the game into a fast-paced action title worth its salt, on top of the streamlining of the extraneous mechanics like food.

YMMV.Pokemon Radical Red

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • Version 2.3 introduced an Easy Mode, which includes a Switch Mode like the vanilla games (while still requiring more strategic teams, of course). It also introduced Minimal Grinding mode, which removes EVs from the game completely, which normally takes a while to grind for, and IVs are all maxed, which would have normally taken a giant $350k Money Sink for.
    • As mentioned under Scrappy Mechanic, Raid Battles being locked behind daily events was a widely disliked feature. 3.0 removed daily spawns entirely, instead giving the player the ability to respawn Raid Dens via Wishing Pieces, which are fairly easy to get. Additionally, the player can now change the in-game time by talking to an NPC in Oak's Lab, letting the player get time-exclusive Pokémon at any time they please.
    • For those who weren't huge fans of the Kanto starters, 3.0's addition of letting the player pick any starter from any generation is a fantastic addition.

YMMV.The Young And The Restless

YMMV.Justice League Throne Of Atlantis

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • Didn't like Aquaman being left out of "War"? This movie adapts his most memorable scene from that arc, when he summons the sharks to attack.
    • This movie also depicts Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and Shazam as more mature and responsible. They also give more priority to keeping civillians safe, as seen in the climax: Superman saves John Henry Irons and Wonder Woman saves Lois and Jimmy.
    • They also show WHY Aquaman wasn't at the fight against Darkseid; they establish that he is still living in his father's lighthouse and is unsure of himself. He hasn't become a super hero yet, thus why he couldn't help.

YMMV.Spider Man And The X Men

  • Author's Saving Throw: This book is rare in that it gives notice to how the X-Men have recently been failing their students. A common complaint in throughout the years since M-Day was how Academy X kids have been treated like Flat Character for writers to either kill or have the X-Men put in their place when they act out in uncharacteristic ways.

UncannyValley.Five Nights At Freddys

  • A criticism of the gameplay trailer was that Vanessa's initial model looked off and unintentionally creepy. This appears to be addressed, as the Freeze-Frame Bonus in "Freddy & Friends" Episode 4 and a quick shot in the "State of Play" trailer shows that her model has received extra work.

YMMV.Mitama Security Spirit Busters

  • Author's Saving Throw: Early on, Mitama was considered very annoying while Rena was boring and emotionless. By switching their Boke and Tsukkomi Routine (Rena becoming the unpredictable boke shaking now tsukkomi Mitama's view of the world), it balanced their personality traits and made them both more likable. It also helps that they are not stuck in these respective roles and will occasionally switch back and forth to surprise the readers and keep things fresh.

YMMV.Star Trek Enterprise

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • The Vulcans in Enterprise (particularly T'Pol) were criticized by viewers for acting very un-Vulcan-like, nearly indistinguishable from Romulans. This was used as the basis of a three-episode story in the fourth season involving the Syrannites, an orthodox sect of Vulcans (in contrast to Vulcan society which has "strayed from Surak's teachings"), and the discovery of the Kir'Shara (the original copy of Surak's writings). It is said that Season 5 would have tried to explain why T'Pol is more emotional than most Vulcans by revealing she was actually half-Romulan.note
    • Another complaint was how the show did nothing to show the formation of the Federation. Again, this was addressed in the fourth season with a three-episode story that showed the beginnings of alliance between Humans, Vulcans, Andorians and Tellarites (the Federation's four founding species) as well as the formation of the "Coalition of Planets" in the penultimate two-part story.
    • Also, the greatest one of all, "Judgment", which turns the entire Klingon race from a gigantic flanderization to a retroactive Tear Jerker that shows that the warrior caste took over the Klingons' entire culture slowly over several hundred years. By the time of Star Trek: Voyager, the warriors are all that's left.
    • Season 1 had both Archer and the NX-01 constantly getting wrecked by every other threat of the week. Archer from season 2 onward is far more adept in combat and wins many fistfights and firefights, while the NX-01 (after getting its phase cannons) starts winning a lot more ship actions (including against the Klingons), even before it upgrades with enhanced hull plating and photonic torpedoes at the end of season 2.
    • Season 4 can be seen as one really long Author's Saving Throw; bringing in a new head writer who promptly set the writers' team to cleaning up the mess of his predecessors. It wasn't perfect, but there was reasonably only so much they could do in one season, as well as devoting so much time to retconning the three previous clunky seasons.

Series.Pokemon Sunday

Pokémon Sunday aired its last episode on September 26th 2010, after which it was essentially renamed Pokémon Smash with some slight additions to the cast (such as three foreign-language-speaking girls known as the "International Division", and replacing Chimchar and Lucario with Oshawott and Zoroark). Due to popular demand, Zoroark was later sent to Russia and (re-)replaced by the returning Director Lucario.

YMMV.Legacies

  • Author's Saving Throw: For fans fed up with Hope's obsession with saving Landon, the S4 premiere have the Squad attempt to come up with a plan to deal with the Malivore....without Hope! They then tell a hurt Hope that they only did so because of her tunnel vision when it comes to Landon.

YMMV.Ralph Breaks The Internet

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • After initial trailers received controversy for showing the African-American Disney Princess Tiana with a lighter skin color, among other questionable design choices that made her appear to be borderline Ambiguously Brown, the Disney Princess scenes were reanimated to depict Tiana with a design more accurate to that of her original movie (and her merchandise), where she was unambiguously African-American.
    • For Latin American viewers, this is the case with Vanellope, due to the complaints in the previous film regarding her voice, as she was voiced by Maria Antonieta de las Nieves, who was considered too old to voice a little girl anymore, compared with her most famous role as La Chilindrina. In this case, she's replaced with Liliana Barba, a much younger voice actress, and as such, much more fitting for the role.
    • With fans growing tired of Disney’s recurring usage of the hidden/twist villain in many of its previous movies, many are relieved that the movie has no true Big Bad, much less a twist villain, unless one counts Ralph’s own insecurities that serve as the Final Boss.
    • A criticism of the original movie was its Status Quo Is God plot and the fact that Ralph is heavily chastised for even thinking of wanting to change his bad guy status. While it may lead to a Broken Aesop, Vanellope wanting more or less the same thing and eventually achieving it certainly addresses this problem.

YMMV.Atop The Fourth Wall

  • Author's Saving Throw: There seem to be many of these. If enough people complain about a perceived plot hole or just that something wasn't addressed, it will most likely be addressed in the next storyline-related episode.
    • After various comments pointed out that Linkara never saw the outside of Vyce's ship, yet instantly recognized it, the next episode has Pollo note this, then Linkara asks who else would have a ship with a giant V on it.
    • The very end of the Real Ghostbusters in Ghostbusters II review features Jaeris, visiting Linkara via portal, returning the mobile emitter he'd stolen during the Gunslinger arc, thus tying up the loose end left from the Aborted Arc of him planning to use it against his then-enemy.
    • During the Sleepwalker arc, Linkara's friends come across as a little too unsympathetic to Linkara starting to cross lines they're uncomfortable with, treating it as baseless paranoia when there is an actual and obvious threat that's driving him to such extreme measures. This gets addressed when they meet 90's Kid again and call him out on working with Vyce, pointing out that they left Linkara because of how far he was going, but 90's Kid is hardly any better for what he's done. On top of that, 90's Kid himself reveals why he was working with Vyce and the real reason for Linkara's behavior.

YMMV.Twitch Plays Pokemon Randomized Chatty Crystal

  • Author's Saving Throw: The decision to have Ditto as a starter instead of Unown was criticized by some due to the only thing differentiating it from the latter being that it has even worse stats. A first Balance Buff that boosted its stats to put it on even foot with its predecessor received lukewarm reception by players, so a second one restored its stats to normal but gave it access to Transform, allowing it to copy its opponent's stats and typing (although Hidden Power remained its only move once transformed). This was received much more positively, as it both helped to make it more useful in battle and to make it stand out more from Unown.

YMMV.Dangan Ronpa Galactic Melancholy

  • Author's Saving Throw: Many of the characters that were hated (if not a Base-Breaking Character) are this. They include Korekiyo (who went from a psychotic serial killer to a Noble Demon yakuza) and Celes (who has her personality and life more explored in this fanfiction than the original story). But the biggest example of this is Hiyoko, who underwent some massive Character Development starting from the middle of Chapter 3.

YMMV.Super Bomberman

  • Author's Saving Throw: Patch 1.3 of Super Bomberman R vastly improves the framerate (at the cost of resolution and graphics), controls, lag, Story Mode camera, adds adjustable difficulty for AI, and adds free stage DLC on top of that. This continued with their second update which not only added even more characters and stages, but a brand new story level and Tournament Mode. In said Tournament Mode, they gave each character their own unique stats and the Bomberman Bros. the option to use the abilities of any unlocked characters.

Cowboy Be Bop At His Computer.Pokemon

  • Learning nothing, the Versus Books guide for Pokémon Yellow was even worse. Item names were combined together, points on the map didn't correspond to the text, there were at least two instances of the illustration of the wrong Pokémon used, and any areas not required to reach the end were completely skipped and never mentioned. Also, Pidgey's rarity is listed as "Only One," even though anyone playing the game would encounter far too many right from the start. Overall, it gave the impression that the guide's author considered playing the game a chore and just wanted to get to the end to get it over with, then wrote up the guide to get his check as quickly as possible. They would later disavow this version and just reprint the first guide with information from Yellow added, but still kept all of the original errors.

Recap.Doctor Who 2016 CS The Return Of Doctor Mysterio

  • Author's Saving Throw: Nardole was a widely hated character when he appeared in "The Husbands of River Song", but has undergone some extensive rehabilitation, rendering him more likeable and less annoying in his encore appearance. (This would continue into Series 10.) Even more so, 24 years around the Doctor have reverted him from bumbling fool to Servile Snarker out of impatience and annoyance in putting up with his increasingly tiresome antics and waiting on new body parts.

YMMV.Go Animate

YMMV.Dance Dance Revolution

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • 3rd MIX received criticism for requiring a secret code to unlock Maniac/SSR difficulty for 3rd MIX songs, and on top of that once the player enters SSR mode they cannot play songs of any lower difficulty. 3rd MIX PLUS instead allows Maniac to be selected from any mode from the song select.
    • 4th MIX was praised for its large songlist but criticized for only allowing the player access to a subset of those songs during a given credit, based on the genre they pick. 4th MIX PLUS fixed this by adding an "All Music" folder.
    • Two of the greatest criticisms with DDRMAX were the total reboot of the songlist (with the only "old" songs being a handful of previously console-exclusive songs) and the removal of the difficulty "foot" ratings in favor of the Groove Radar system. DDRMAX2 and the American PS2 version address this by bringing back songs from previous games as well as putting the foot ratings back alongside the Groove Radar.
    • Supernova 2 received critical backlash for downrating some their newest songs 1-2 difficulties lower (i.e. Paranoia Hades Difficult 8 being harder than Max 300 Expert 10). Knowing that the 10 rating can no longer be contained, this finally forced them to scrap the outdated 10 rating with the newer X rating (generally old rating multiplied by 1.45), re-rating them properly and actually paying attention to patterns in doubles.

YMMV.FTL Faster Than Light

  • Author's Saving Throw: As mentioned above, the developers responded to one of the more notorious ass pulls in the game by not only having a justification for how boarders get past the supposedly impenetrable shields in Advanced Edition, but also making it available for the player so that it's not a case of "the computer's rules are not your rules".

YMMV.Secret Empire

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • Captain Marvel's speech in issue #7 finally has her admit how badly she screwed up during Civil War II and how her recent behavior made her less popular and allowed Steve to more easily manipulate her. This seemingly is a nod to the readers who had grown to find her unlikable after her actions in Civil War II.
    • Initially, the explanation was that the Supreme Leader was the Captain America that fans had always known, but corrupted into a fascist monstrosity, while the Cap that appears to stop him at the conclusion was a "remnant" constructed from Kobik's memories of the original. This was later retconned and it was revealed that Supreme Leader Cap came from an alternate timeline similar to a "What If?" while Kobik had subconsciously preserved the Cap we all know and love.

OvershadowedByAwesome.Live Action Films

YMMV.The Last Kids On Earth

  • Author's Saving Throw: The book's weak point is depicting June as a slightly generic at best The Smurfette Principle. Somewhat justified, as the book itself is written from Jack's point of view. The show fixes the aforementioned issue by adding in some scenes from June's perspective.

YMMV.Shing

  • Author's Saving Throw: Not everyone was receptive to the joystick based combat system the game was built around, so later updates allowed players to switch to a more standard control layout.

YMMV.Married With Children

  • Author's Saving Throw: It's hard to overstate just how much the character of Seven was reviled by the fans, the cast, and (eventually) the writers. He was unceremoniously dumped and had his face slapped on the side of milk carton with not one single character caring enough to notice it.

YMMV.The Mandalorian S 2 E 6 Chapter 14 The Tragedy

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • A big one for the character of Boba Fett. For years after the original movies, his status as a badass was almost entirely a meme, and his actual actions in the films regarded as little more than a joke. But here? Boba Fett is actually a badass, a really scary One-Man Army even without his armor.
    • Last season, a lot of fans were outraged at Ming-Na Wen seemingly being wasted on a rather dull one-off villain. But not only is Fennec still alive, her character is greatly expanded alongside Boba, and gets an extended action sequence establishing her as a One-Woman Army.
    • One of the more controversial retcons that Star Wars: The Clone Wars made was the revelation that Jango Fett, and by extension his son Boba, were not real Mandalorians. Granted, this claim came from Prime Minister Almec, who's not the most trustworthy source, and the New Mandalorians were clearly trying to save face, so Epileptic Trees suggested that Almec was lying about the situation, but this episode restores the Mandalorian status of the Fetts and suggests that Almec was wrongnote .

YMMV.Adventure Time

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • Many fans were understandably pissed off when the arc involving Finn losing his arm, which had been foreshadowed forever, was clumsily resolved in "Breezy." Season 7 rectifies this by having him lose his arm again, this time for good. Finn himself admits that he's not too bummed about this, because he feels like this was always meant to happen.
    • Lemongrab (both 1 and 2) has always been one of the most polarizing characters in the fandom and their Flanderization and overexposure in season 5 has only pissed fans off even more. The creators resolved this by blowing them up and having PB construct a third Lemongrab. The new Lemongrab is much more stable than either of his predecessors while still keeping some of the original Lemongrab's personality quirks. And he appears noticeably less.
    • Finn's manipulation of Flame Princess in "Frost & Fire" and Bubblegum's control and surveillance of others are acknowledged and addressed in "Bun Bun" and "The Cooler", respectively.
    • Marceline and Bubblegum's past relationship being left to Word of Saint Paul for years (due to the show's broadcasting in places where homosexuality is a crime) has often been criticized. "Come Along With Me" ultimately has Marceline confess her feelings, followed by an onscreen kiss and confirmation of them as an Official Couple.

YMMV.Resident Evil 7 Biohazard

  • End of Zoe resolves the Broken Base described below and finally give Zoe a deserved Happy Ending thanks to the combined efforts of Joe and Umbrella, with Ethan checking up on her as soon as possible via phone after informing the soldiers of her condition.
  • A very common complaint was the lack of a proper final boss, with the fight between Ethan and Eveline coming off as rather lackluster to some. Not a Hero and End of Zoe gives us fairly epic, and proper fights with Lucas and the Swamp Man, respectively.

Misuse: The sequel did something better than the original

Main.Changed My Jumper

YMMV.The Legend Of Zelda A Link Between Worlds

  • Author's Saving Throw: Some Zelda games (mostly later 3D games) are criticized by some for being too linear and having tedious exploration. ALBW addresses these concerns in several ways: by allowing the Hyrule and Lorule dungeons to be completed in almost any order, by providing a convenient transportation system early on with Irene and the weather vanes, and by allowing most items to be used early on through Ravio's rentals.

YMMV.Forky Asks A Question

  • Author's Saving Throw: One of the criticisms of Toy Story 4 was that it focused almost entirely on Woody’s development, whereas the veteran character ensemble was largely Demoted to Extra. This series devotes several episodes to Forky having quality time interacting with legacy characters who got shafted in Toy Story 4, such as Rex and Hamm.

YMMV.In Space With Markiplier

  • Author's Saving Throw: One minor criticism of Heist was that, since the runtime of each decision was visible to the audience ahead of time, it was fairly easy to guess which path would lead to a death. Since Space takes a different approach to its deaths, the runtimes don't necessarily give them away anymore.

YMMV.Star Wars Queens Shadow

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • After many complaints that Disney was ignoring the prequel era, the novel (alongside the renewal of The Clone Wars and the release of Master and Apprentice) has been welcomed as fresh change of pace in the Star Wars franchise.
    • The prequel trilogy was criticized for its pacing issues (particularly the decade-long Time Skip between The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones), with many important events happening off-screen. The novel being set between the two films expands much upon Padmé's transition from the Queen of Naboo to the Senator of Naboo.
    • Some people criticized the fact that none of the characters in the Prequel Trilogy did more about the slavery on Tatooine, especially Padmé as she was actually in some position to make a difference. Queen's Shadow reveals that before she was asked to become senator, Padmé had seriously considered dedicating her life to eradicating slavery on Tatooine. After becoming a senator, she attempts to bring up the subject in the Senate and even sends Sabé to Tatooine to try and locate Shmi Skywalker.
    • There was some confusion over the exact dates the Queens of Naboo took and stayed in office over the course of the Prequel Trilogy and The Clone Wars, due to the belief that a full term constituted four years. Queen's Shadow reveals that canonically a full term is actually two years, which subsequently clears up a lot of continuity issues with the queens. note
    • One criticism of The Phantom Menace was that we didn't see much of the negative effects of the Trade Federation's occupation of Naboo, which lowered dramatic tension. Here, we're given details of the occupation that makes it clear it was terrible; many people died resisting the Trade Federation and they also tortured a twelve year old handmaiden for information, resulting in her being permanently scarred.

  • Dante and the DMC series are either an Affectionate Parody of the gothic anti-hero supernatural genre or another edgy trope from Capcom that needed a radical 90's type of anti-hero who lived in a satanic nightmarish world filled with leather-clad gothic babes, a Darker and Edgier twin brother who was the evil foil, and a one-liner-spewing half-human half-demon rebel without a cause with a tragic backstory and the most edgy weapons this side of a Spawn comic. The series leaning heavily into Rule of Cool and all the campy elements as time went on, along with a stronger focus on character and narrative, makes it harder to argue in favor of the latter viewpoint, particularly since it was a response to Dante's stoic, no-nonsense depiction in Devil May Cry 2 (brought about because several members of the development team didn't understand and/or care for Dante's portrayal in the first game).

YMMV.Hatchimals

  • Author's Saving Throw: While the original Hatchimals had hatching troubles and the allegations that they swear, the later iterations changed the way the critters mumble in their sleep and tried to keep the hatching to under an hour. Customer Support and replacements were also offered by the company.

YMMV.The Proud Family Louder And Prouder

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • The Oscar abuse in the original was seen as rather mean-spirited due to how it occurred even when Oscar wasn't being surly. In this show, while he remains the Butt-Monkey, he's always the one that brings his misery onto himself, making the slapstick he endures more hilarious and cathartic than cruel.
    • Trudy doesn't physically abuse Oscar the way she used to in the original show (many fans did complain about the blatant Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male that Oscar used to suffer in the original show). In fact, their marriage is a lot better in this show than it was in the original show (one scene even hinted that they were having sex).
    • Fans that hated Penny's friends for being fake and backstabbing were pleasantly surprised to find Dijonay at the very least behaving like a much better friend, having more moments when she would stand up for Penny instead of leaving her in the dust. On top of that, some of Dijonay's selfish decisions are made for more complicated reasons, such as her trying to take care of her siblings.
    • Fans who considered the Chang Triplets stereotypical Asian and Nerdy characters were relieved to find them absent (so far). That said, other fans who miss the triplets wish they could've been included and had their stereotypical traits removed.
    • Ever since the episode "Love Thy Neighbor", LaCienega's foot size wasn't properly conveyed in subsequent episodes in the original series where she's shown barefoot and her feet are shown to be either small or normal-sized. This is finally corrected in "Raging Bully", where LaCienega is again shown barefoot, and her feet are shown being large.
    • A common complaint about the old show was that Penny was always forced to watch the twins. In this series, Penny only watched them once, but she doesn't watch them as much as she used to.

YMMV.Resident Evil 7 Biohazard

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • Although debates are still going on about it (albeit not nearly as much since the game's release), the return to the foreboding, unsettling nature of "survival horror" that defined the earlier Resident Evil installments prior to Resident Evil 4 is what many longtime series fans have been clamoring for.
    • The game has no quick time events, after 5 and 6 abused them to the point of being annoying.

YMMV.Gears Of War

Misuse: Something changed during the writing process, before the work was released

Characters.Yu Gi Oh Card Game G To I

  • Bowdlerize: Ghostrick Succubus' name was changed to "Socuteboss" in the English TCG. Ditto for Ghostrick Datenshi/Spoiled Angel, whose name was going to become the equally cringe-worthy "Dorklord". Fortunately, it seems that Konami has caught on to how terrible the proposed name was going to be, and renamed her to "Ghostrick Angel of Mischief" instead.

YMMV.Dark Souls

  • Author's Saving Throw: When the Remastered version was announced, much of the existing PC player base complained that they would have to pay full price to upgrade a game that they could already play just finenote . Fortunately, Bandai Namco Entertainment announced about a month prior to the remaster's release that it would be discounted by 50% for owners of the existing PC version for the first two years after its release. Might be valid if this change was made in response to player complaints

    Misuse: Fixing a plot hole

VideoGame.Outer Wilds

  • This particular case was noticed by the devs, as a later patch with the DLC added an extra Nomai computer in Hollow's Lantern which notes that the moon is currently having an abnormal spike in volcanic activity due to the approaching supernova, explaining why its meteors are suddenly so powerful.

Fanfic.The Last Spartan

Misuse: Plot twist that was intended from the start

YMMV.Secret Empire

  • HYDRA Cap lifting Mjolnir in the FCBD issue was later revealed in the final issue as a farce — Elisa Sinclair had used a shard of the Cosmic Cube to change the magic and inscription to make HYDRA Cap worthy. When the world is set back to normal, so is the change and the HYDRA Cap learns to his horror that he's not worthy, whereas the real Steve Rogers is.

YMMV.Thor 2014

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • Jonathan Hickman did one in his Avengers run. The original Thor was unworthy during the Time Runs Out arc, and instead used the hammer of Thorr, which can only be lifted by the unworthy. At the end of the arc, Thor is unable to lift it.
    • Seemingly playing off that, in The Unworthy Thor, Thor is able to use Ultimate Mjolnir to teleport all of Asgard, meaning he is worthy. However, he himself chooses to not use the hammer further. Beta Ray Bill even says that, if any gods are worthy, then it's Thor.

    Complaining

YMMV.Lego City

  • Audience-Alienating Era: Town Jr., from the late 90's. The sets were mind-bogglingly simple to build, with buildings made of a few specialized "juniorized" parts, cars with single-piece chassis, printed-on headlights and no doors, and uninspired designs. Thankfully the juniorization has mostly stopped after LEGO realized its mistakes.

    Gushing

YMMV.Clone High

  • Fair for Its Day: In an age where teenage romance and sex is seen more negatively, Gandhi and Marie Curie ending up in a celibate romance feels like an Author's Saving Throw to the show’s over-the-top treatment of teen sex. Co-creator and voice of JFK Chris Miller said as much himself.

YMMV.Blogger Beware

    Misuse: Marketing crap

YMMV.Resident Evil 7 Biohazard

  • Due to the lack of any sort of combat in early marketing, fans were worried that the game might be taking a page too many from the likes of Outlast and Amnesia by being just as combatless as said games. Their worries were eventually assuaged as the game does indeed feature combat (both firearm-wise and melee-wise, but mostly the former) and the classic herbs health system.
  • The existence of mossy, zombie like monsters which regenerate in the house relieved fans who were worried that the franchise's signature usage of bizarre mutant creatures would be replaced entirely by visually normal humans with Implacable Man features.

Misuse: Video game runs better on stronger hardware
  • Author's Saving Throw: The DS version is considered to be quite fun, unfortunately it can be quite chuggy when you have too many characters onscreen at once. (Even worse if you are emulating it.) The Vita version runs smooth as butter.

    Uncertainly-written examples

YMMV.Star Wars The Bad Batch

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • It's questionable how deliberate it is, but many fans noted that the Empire's use of "chain codes" to strictly control travel between planets makes it a lot easier to believe the franchise's notoriously implausible conceit that all knowledge of the Jedi was completely forgotten in just a couple decades.
    • The franchise took some heat for the Clone Wars displaying such Black-and-White Morality despite the claim in the opening crawl of Revenge of the Sith that there were "heroes on both sides". The Clone Wars only takes a couple minor steps to showing more sympathetic Separatists. In The Bad Batch, Senator Singh represents easily the biggest step in that direction yet.
    • While many accepted the inhibitor chips as an explanation for how so many of the Clones suddenly turned on the Jedi despite their much more fleshed out relationship in The Clone Wars (and adding a layer of tragedy in their character arcs), there was also some concern about the chips eliminating all moral agency on the Clones' part in carrying out Order 66, potentially shooting down some interesting storylines. Throughout the first season, we not only see other "regular" Clones (who didn't have their chips removed or otherwise disrupted) visibly questioning their orders and/or defying the Empire, one of the big reveals at the end of the season is that Crosshair, who was presumed to be under the influence of his chip, had his chip removed sometime between the beginning and end of the season (presumably after he got burned on Bracca), giving moral agency to his Face–Heel Turn.

YMMV.The Dark Tower 2017

  • Author's Saving Throw:
    • Any fans disappointed with how the Man in Black was killed off in the books may find some enjoyment in the film's climax, where Roland has a final showdown with his lifelong nemesis.
    • Those who were pissed that Jake died yet again in the novels (along with all of Roland's companions either dying or departing to an alternate Earth by the end) can relish him finally surviving til the end of the story.

YMMV.Olafs Frozen Adventure

    Unclear

YMMV.Arrow S 7 E 3 Crossing Lines

  • Author's Saving Throw: At long last, the show lets go of trying to convince us a completely normal guy is a worthy Big Bad for Team Arrow who's constantly able to escape entire well-armed teams, as Diaz gains Super-Strength.

YMMV.Nobody Dies

YMMV.Fatal Frame Maiden Of Black Water

  • Author's Saving Throw: This game went out of its way to portray any human sacrifice occuring in the rituals to be willingly done by the sacrifice and considered to be an honorary service to be chosen for, contrary to previous games having characters like Kirie or the twins being forced into participating in rituals that ended in their deaths. This one is commented out

Characters.Boardwalk Empire Thompson Family

YMMV.Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2

  • Author's Saving Throw: Though the look wasn't disliked, Sam's 'perky' look remains far more popular than her eventual 'nerdy' appearance. The sequel has her let some hair down while still pulling it back, combing elements of both.

YMMV.Avenger Goddess

  • Author's Saving Throw: Word of God explains that a key reason for the Age Lift of Thor and his immediate family was so that it would make more sense for Earth to have worshipped him as a god a thousand years ago.

    Trope descriptions

Main.Aborted Arc

Or maybe the writers just realized it was a lousy idea that was cluttering up the plot, or just lost interest in it. This weighs rather heavily on the Willing Suspension of Disbelief, but sometimes the best way to execute an Author's Saving Throw and get rid of an element that isn't doing the story any favors is to just pretend it never happened. Trope description.

Main.Anti Frustration Features

Can overlap with Author's Saving Throw if the feature is added to address a common complaint. See also Acceptable Breaks from Reality for when it is the rules of reality that are changed.

Main.No Saving Throw

Do not confuse with Author's Saving Throw.

Main.Heroes Frontier Step

In some cases, this may purposely act as an Author's Saving Throw, if a work's character is supposed to be the hero from the start, but has not been doing a particularly good job at their role, the writer may try to inflict this to make unambiguously clear they are the good guy.

70 wicks were checked. A couple had a mix of reasonable and bad example, so the tallies will add up to a little over 100%.

  • 2/70 actually cited Word of God as to why something was written the way it was.
  • 38/70 look valid, but don't cite a source
  • 9/70 simply state that the sequel or remake did something better than the original
  • 1/70 consists of "The author of some bad books followed them up with a good story!"
  • 2/70 are things that changed in the writing process, before the work was actually released
  • 2/70 appear to just describe the filling of a plot hole
  • 2/70 describe plot twists that were clearly intended from the beginning
  • 1/70 uses this trope to complain about an earlier incarnation of Lego City
  • 2/70 are weird gushing
  • 1/70 is "People were concerned when the marketing showed X. Fortunately, the finished product showed not X"
  • 1/70 says that a video game runs smoother on the PSP than on the DS
  • 3/70 say "Some people might feel this way"
  • 6/70 I couldn't figure out
  • 4/70 were from trope descriptions

So while the misuse isn't as bad as some other tropes, a closer look shows that the majority of examples are really tropers expressing their own opinions that a later part of a work is better than another.

As discussed in the above-linked thread, the trope is subjective despite having a completely objective definition. And furthermore, looking at the examples that seem reasonable, most of them actually seem to mean Rescued from the Scrappy Heap.

The way I see it, there are two ways to fix the trope:

  1. Restrict it to examples were we can source Word of God or Word of Saint Paul
  2. Turn it into a disambiguation page between Even Better Sequel, Surprisingly Improved Sequel, Rescued from the Scrappy Heap, Win Back the Crowd, Fix Fic, Armed with Canon, and Running the Asylum. This is my favoured solution.

NinetiesAntiHero.Video Games

[[folder:Misuse: The author of a bad work followed it with a good work.]]

Opened. I'll wait for more arguments to come in before voting, but I thought I'd comment that back when the Trivia thread was a thing (before making things Trivia required TRS), there was a vote for whether to move this from YMMV to Trivia. I don't know if anyone here wants that to be done; I just thought I'd mention it in case it's relevant.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.

How different would a trivia-based revamp that requires Word of God confirmation be from the trope We Don't Suck Anymore? That one states instances in advertising where they address criticism, either in a general Win Back the Crowd sense or a specific element, and say they learned from it. Wouldn't a lot of cases of WOG-backed Author's Saving Throw be when they're trying to promote their new release?

WDSA is about marketing; if ATS requires WOG, it's about authorial intent.

That said, if we go disambig, WDSA would also be on the list (I wasn't aware that trope existed, which is why it's not in the OP).

I think, should we go with the trivia-item Word of God option, we should rename it as well, with potentially turning the old name into a disambig. Something to the effect of Criticism Fix Acknowledgement or Author-Intended Save, but a better name than those, could convey the idea.

I'm against disambiguating this at all costs, as I feel that the trope's YMMV qualities work really well for the most part, and it's often helpful in learning what aspects of a work/franchise were disliked before something was done to make people more accepting of it. The trope is also very widespread to the point of often getting its own subpages for certain franchises.

Trust no one.

Widespread is a poor argument when the wick check is demonstrating misuse on the order of about 50%. 10% misuse is the threshold of "there may be a problem here".

I'm still of the opinion that people being happy that stuff changes in a franchise/show seems worthy of YMMV troping. ATS seems to cover that just fine that doesn't go to the extreme of "person returns to a work after giving up on it" that Win Back the Crowd goes to.

Same goes to Rescued from the Scrappy Heap, since a character's qualities can change for the better without them necessarily being The Scrappy in the first place.

That isn't this trope. That's misuse.

Also trying to use a YMMV trope to guess author intent is always a bad idea. Alott of these entries have no clue what their doing?

I neglected to mention that if we add a requirement for examples to have Word of God and/or Word of Saint Paul confirmation, we should definitely make this Trivia instead of YMMV because in that case, this would end up being based solely on background information instead of fan opinions. That's what happened to Creator's Apathy, which was moved from YMMV to Trivia when a Word of God requirement was added and it was renamed from They Just Didn't Care.

This isn't a vote for adding a requirement for creator confirmation; I'm just saying we should move it to Trivia if we add that requirement. I'll need to think about this a bit more.

I'd prefer to move it to Trivia and rename to Criticism Targeted Change (or) or something alike.

I already purged most of the Author's Saving Throw misuse on YMMV.Death Battle a while ago. However, I feel like the seemingly valid ones could still use some review. Please advise.

...with the stated assumption that the idea would make a good article...

Assuming [people being happy that stuff changes in a franchise/show is] a valid trope/Audience Reaction, perhaps it can be yarded?

Creating new drafts isn't something that a TRS thread is supposed to forbid. The only reason why this thread can decide it isn't a good idea is if the definition of the article is changed to that meaning.

Hmmm. I remember previously wanting to just merge this with a trope like Win Back the Crowd, since the whole "creator intent" thing is always a minefield and if it's an audience reaction all that should matter is, well, if the attempt worked, not that it was attempted in the first place. (That concept could be trivia, as previously stated, but that's if we really want to focus on the "creator intended this" aspect).

Not as a disambig I should say. We shouldn't go that far, but I'm also not convinced the current definition is actually all that distinct or tropeworthy.

I guess I wouldn't mind combining Amonimus's proposal with moving the more YMMV-heavy examples to the other "it changed and audiences are happier" tropes.

@Idiosyncratic: We can't review examples right now. We're figuring out changes, not doing cleanup.

[up]If we go with Amonimus's proposal while also moving the more subjective examples elsewhere, maybe Win Back the Crowd would be one place to move said subjective examples to.

There's a whole ton of items that have some overlap with this one, which is why I think it's a great idea for a disambig. On top of Win Back the Crowd, there's also Character Rerailment, Rescued from the Scrappy Heap, Improved By The Recut, Surprisingly Improved Sequel, Pandering to the Base, And the Fandom Rejoiced (though obviously not as a replacement link, but rather a place to move examples) and the previously mentioned We Don't Suck Anymore.

I like WarJay's proposal very much, though I kinda prefer it if WBTC is merged into ATS, rather than the other way around.

[up] I really don't agree with the disambiguation idea because all those above mentioned tropes are too specific in certain areas to talk about things as a whole. ATS seems to cover a lot more ground when it comes to covering information that doesn't necessarily fit into any of those specific tropes. I'd almost argue it's kind of a YMMV supertrope.

Judging by the wick check, there clearly is an authorial intent that exists, which can justify fixing AST to properly capture such examples, it just lacks the citation requirement right now. I think we should add the citation requirement and make it a Trivia item.

I don't think it's an easy merge with Win Back the Crowd because WBTC requires fans to have walked away from the work and then a change is made to bring the fans back. In its own right, it potentially has citation issues in its own right (ratings loss and regain). AST does not require that to have happened, it just requires fans to dislike something enough for an author to decide to fix it (and then for the fans to be pleased with the fix). AST might be a reason for why WBTC happens but it's not the same thing, given that AST doesn't require losing fans to be in play. Moving AST misuse that is really WBTC makes sense, of course, but merging the two when they're actually looking at different things — in a potentially complimentary way — does not.

Crown Description:

Authors Saving Throw is misused, and the fact that it's classified as subjective has been questioned since it's about creators responding to the audience instead of vice versa, with how well the saving throw fares with audiences being irrelevant. What should be done with Authors Saving Throw?
